The Campaign of Hillary Clinton On November 8, 2016, Hillary Clinton lost the Presidential Election to Donald Trump. Even though she lost, it was an important part of US history because she is the first woman to get the presidential nomination from a major political party. Previously, Clinton ran for the presidential nomination in 2008 where she lost to the winner Barack Obama. She became Secretary of State under President Obama. Many people think the US is a democracy and whoever has more votes should win. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in the 2016 election though Trump won the election. Clinton received 65,853,514 votes whereas Trump received 62,984,828 votes. Trump had more electoral college votes than Clinton. Trump had 306 votes and Clinton had 232 votes. Clinton won 20 states and Trump won 30. Trump won more of the smaller states and smaller cities whereas Clinton won the bigger states and bigger cities where more people live.

A breakdown of Clinton’s voters in the 2016 presidential election.

WHAT IS THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE? The Electoral College is the combined number of members of the House of Representatives and the Senate plus the number of representatives the District of Columbia would have if it were a state. The Electoral College has 538 electors. The Electoral College formally chooses the president. If a candidate wins the popular vote in a state, the candidate wins the electoral college vote of that state. The problem with this system is that a candidate can win the popular vote and still lose the election. This has happened five times in United States history. The Founding Fathers of the United States thought it would be a good idea to help balance the power between the bigger states and the smaller states.

Hillary’s Supporters

Clinton received a lot of support during the 2016 election. The only groups she did not win were whites, men, non-college graduates, and people over 50 years old. Many people who voted for Clinton wanted to have a woman president in office. Clinton wanted to raise taxes for the rich so people can pay their fair share. Clinton campaigned to close the gender pay gap because so that women would get equal pay. Clinton wanted to raise the minimum wage to $15 so that people can live better. Voters did not like Trump because they thought he was racist.

Profile of a Hillary Supporter (MN)

MN is a 50-year-old woman who is a lawyer. I think Hillary is very smart. I supported her because I agree with her on all her major issues. And I would never support a misogynistic, bigoted man like Trump for President. I was so so so happy that a woman was finally nominated by one of the two major political parties to be on the ballot for President! I can’t believe it has taken this long and I thought it was truly groundbreaking.” I think it is important to have a smart person as President since it is a tough job. I also think it is important to have women and people who are diverse in positions of leadership in all areas. I think the constitution should be amended to get rid of the electoral college. In a true democracy, the person who gets the most votes should be the winner.” The women’s suffrage movement was a long fight to win the right for women to vote in the US. The campaign was hard. Lots of people disagreed with this movement because many people believed that women should not have this right. It took a hundred years to win that right.
