2017 Canberra Raiders Cup Round 1 - 1st & 2nd April 2017
Proudly sponsored by
Welcome! Welcome to the 2017 Austbrokers Canberra Raiders Cup and Russell Kennedy Lawyers Canberra Raiders League Tag competitions. This promises to be another exciting season with the return of Canberra legends to the coaching and playing ranks; bright new talent being unveiled at their clubs and more League Tag teams than ever before.
There is unprecedented interest in the senior local club competition and we must use this interest to get the young boys and girls to not only follow the Raiders but also be connected to their grass roots environment. This is essential for our long term growth and development. Exciting times with the new Live Stream telecast commencing through BAR TV Sports where a Match of the Round will be Live Streamed each weekend, all First Grade matches can be watched as a replay in full and all lower grades will have a highlights package. Supporting this will be a newly revamped website and more development of the Rugby League Record to better engage with our supporters.
The new Open Women’s competition is being played on a Friday evening and will soon evolve into the full Canberra Raiders Cup tackle completion that will provide women and girls with a choice. We envisage having 7-8 teams in that competition. The CRRL has endorsed a new strategic plan for the organisation which focuses on the future with growth in numbers, new facilities and new formats whilst paying respect to our history as being central to our future. At the commencement of this season I would like to thank the wonderful volunteers that keep our sport running and our clubs operating. Thank you for your endeavours and support of rugby league; your support of our officials and also for being the gatekeepers to ensuring the highest levels of behaviour and sportsmanship are displayed each week. Making sure our young people have a safe and inclusive environment, at both junior and senior levels is paramount. Have a wonderful season and I look forward to meeting everyone around the grounds each weekend. Mark Vergano General Manager Canberra Region Rugby League

Sammy Says Hello from Wakefield in the U.K. As part of the Canberra Raiders Cup program I will be giving people from back home a different perspective of rugby league from an Aussie in the English Super League. After 5 months living and playing with Wakefield Sam Williams Trinity the move has been enjoyable so far but has had plenty of challenges both on and off the field. The club has made the change as easy as possible but the support network that a professional player needs in todays environment is magnified once you are taken away from your comfort zone. After 3 months of training throughout the English winter the season has begun in an old school style with wet muddy conditions being faced without to much ball movement which would have been more common before rugby league was moved to a summer sport. The first month has been a roller coaster to say the least, we have found ourselves in games that we could have won and won games in which we probably could easily have lost in different circumstances leaving us with 3 wins and 3 losses. The English have a different style of rugby league then what is experienced in the NRL with an emphasis being based on ball movement which is something I think fans from both competitions would rather see and finding the balance between that and high percentage footy is often the biggest battle, the best teams manage to find this. The fans have also made the move enjoyable, the singing and passion that the English have whether it be soccer, cricket, rugby league or whatever sport it brings another dimension to the game day experience, its frustrating to see negative talk from opposing fans about the viking clap at the Raiders games, i think its one of the best things that has been brought into Canberra Stadium to add to the exciting brand that the Raiders play. Anyway, good luck to everyone in this years competitions of all ages playing in the A.C.T and surrounding towns.
Sam Williams is a correspondent for the Rugby League Record who will write a fortnightly column about his experiences in England since his recent move to the Super League. Now plying his trade at Wakefield Trinity, the Cooma Colts junior has played 70 games in the NRL—most of those appearances coming for the Canberra Raiders.
