Alan Tongue Tackling Family Violence The Boomanulla Raiders welcomed former Raiders captain Alan Tongue last week as he shared his “Stop. Think. Say No To Family Violence” program. The 2017 ACT Australian of the Year took the time to speak to both the Boomanulla men’s and ladies league tag sides during their midweek training session. Tongue took over the training session as he ran through plenty of training drills to help emphasise the statistics of family violence before taking the team into the sheds for a presentation. Long time Boomanulla player, Peter Williams, was pleased to see the former Country representative teaching his side about the subject of family violence. “I just think it was great,” Williams said. “It was a really good learning curve for some of the boys. There’s a lot of young fathers in our group so we found it very rewarding.” Boomanulla Ladies League Tag captain Amie Dekantios also believed that Tongue’s program was invaluable for the playing group. “It was fantastic to have someone of that stature come and speak to us regarding such a high issue in society,” Dekantios said. “It’s important that everyone is aware of [family violence]. “Until you see the actual statistics, nobody really talks about it so it is important for Alan to come and speak to people - and to come to a local footy club, that’s great.” With one in three women having experienced physical violence, Tongue, a father of three daughters, was convinced to start his program to help educate people on the subject. “We have a huge problem in our country and across the world,” Tongue said. “Those statistics of one in three women being affected by physical violence is something that
worries me as a father. “I don’t want my children growing up in a community like that and I don’t want other people’s children growing up in a culture like that.” Since retiring from rugby league in 2011, Tongue has gone on to deliver his program across a variety of schools and has also become an ambassador for the NRL’s Voice Against Violence Program. “I have an opportunity though the values that the game has taught me, an opportunity to get in front of people and have these sessions with the use of movement, activity, sport and rugby league as a way of connecting with people,” Tongue said. Having already delivered the program to the Gunning Roos, Tongue hopes to deliver the program to all of the rugby league clubs in the Canberra Region. “I was fortunate that through the Canberra Raiders and Dixon Advisories, I was able to receive some funding to run the programs which I am really grateful for,” Tongue said. “It’s an opportunity where I would like to speak to all of the local football clubs.”

Austbrokers Canberra Raiders Cup Round 10 Wrap Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 26 (Tries: Z Hart 2, N Cornish, P Cooke, T Cornish; Goals: B Hewitt 3) d Woden Valley Rams 16 (Tries: L Murphy, M Geiger, C McGhie; Goals: C Johnson 2) Intent on making amends for their one-point defeat earlier in the season, the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs beat the Woden Valley Rams 26-16 at Phillip Enclosed Oval on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs shot out of the blocks thanks to two early tries to Nick Cornish and Zach Hart despite seeing less of the ball in the opening exchanges. Woden managed to fight back through Liam Murphy who grounded the ball after a Dominic Stephens fumble allowed the Woden centre to score, but Hart scored another try before halftime to give Goulburn a 12 point cushion. Woden was valiant in the opening 20 minutes of the second half when Michael Geiger ran the length of the field to score a try before Cleve McGhie added another try to lower the margin to points. However, Goulburn struck back with two tries at the end of the match with Pat Cooke and Tyler Cornish crossing the try line to secure the win. The win sees Goulburn sit in fifth place, only outside of the top four on for and against, while Woden slide to eighth. Queanbeyan Kangaroos 32 (Tries: J Simbiken 3, M Connolly, A Taholo, J Dent; Goals: J Essex 4) d Tuggeranong Bushrangers 12 (Tries: J Pollard, Q Cannon; Tries: J Mitchell) The Queanbeyan Kangaroos continued their good form with a seventh consecutive win of the season. Three tries to 18 year old Jedidiah Simbiken gave the Roos a huge boost as he showed blistering speed and footwork to open the scoring. The Bushrangers hit back when Jayden Pollard crossed the try line on the back of some impressive work from the Tuggeranong forwards. The Kangaroos hit back after halftime with two simple tries before Quinlyn Cannon started and finished an excellent try for the Bushrangers. However, the Kangaroos were relentless and scored two more tries with Simbiken scoring the final try as he jumped high to catch a well-placed Aaron Gorrell kick.
The win sees the Kangaroos remain in second place while the loss sees Tuggeranong drop out of the top four and move down to sixth place. Queanbeyan Blues 46 (Tries: F Fanifo 2, B Spears 2, B Taueki 2, M Cullen, T Reudiger; Goals: T Campese 6, A Misios) d Belconnen United Sharks 12 (B Sione, S Tupuola; Goals: D Eason 2) The Queanbeyan Blues secured another win as the league pacesetters defeated the Belconnen Sharks at Seiffert Oval. With Thomas Reudiger moving from the centres to halfback, the Blues didn’t miss a beat as Michael Cullen ran a good line to burst his way through the Sharks defence to open the scoring. The Blues scored back to back tries as they were willing to throw the ball around from each side of the field. Brendon Taueki continued his impressive try scoring feats as he scored off the back of a short side play to further their lead. The Blues outside backs continued to dominate, but the Sharks managed to late consolation tries thanks to Sonny Tupuola and BJ Sione. The win sees the Blues remain in first place while the Sharks stay in last place.
West Belconnen Warriors 18 (Tries: S Finnegan, R Fulivai, A Greenwood; Goals: R Roberts 3) d Gungahlin Bulls 16 (Tries: R O’Sullivan, H Smith-Shields, D Williams; Goals: D Keir 2) The Warriors claimed a late win against the Gungahlin Bulls thanks to the booty of last year’s Les McIntyre Medalist, Bobby Roberts. Having lost the corresponding match earlier in the season, the signs weren’t good for the Warriors when the Gungahlin Bulls scored thanks to some dazzling footwork from Harley Smith-Shields. The Bulls pulled further ahead when David Williams gathered a stray pass to score before running the length of the field to score. The defending premiers hit back when Sam Finnegan showed good awareness from dummy half to score, but Gungahlin hit back with a try to Rourke O’Sullivan. A towering kick from Bobby Roberts was met by Ricky Fulivai to give the Warriors hope once more before Aidan Greenwood was able to ground a grubber to bring the scores level. A late penalty secured the comeback for the Warriors and launched the Warriors to fourth of the ladder, while the Bulls drop to seventh place.

Canberra Raiders Cup First Grade - Round 11 Preview By Zachary Gates Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Queanbeyan Blues, 2pm Saturday at Seears Workwear Oval, Streamed Live In an absolute blockbuster the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and Queanbeyan Blues will meet in the feature game of Round 11. The first-placed Blues stand as the only undefeated side after 10 rounds competition, while the second-placed Kangaroos have one loss to their name. However, a win to the Kangaroos would propel them to the top of the table as they boast a high points difference than Terry Campese’s men. The Kangaroos are coming off a 32-12 win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers on the weekend, while the Blues will look build on a 46-12 steamroll oft he Belconnen United Sharks. Belconnen United Sharks v Yass Magpies, 2pm Saturday at O’Connor A competition heavyweight and big battler will cross swords when the Sharks and Yass Magpies meet on Saturday. The Sharks will aim for a more competitive performance after being thrashed 46-12 at the hands of the Blues on the weekend. Sitting in last on the ladder means the Sharks are desperate for wins in an attempt to avoid another wooden spoon. Coming face-to-face with the Sharks will be a Magpies outfit fresh off the back of a bye. In its most recent outing, Yass powered through the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs in a 34 -22 victory to secure its fourth win of the season. The third-placed Magpies will look to bolster their finals chances with a win over the Sharks on Saturday.
Goulburn Workers Bulldogs v West Belconnen Warriors, 2pm Sunday at Workers Arena The West Belconnen Warriors will aim to further entrench themselves in the top four on Sunday when they face a Goulburn Workers Bulldogs outfit eyeing off a top-four position. The Warriors are perched in fourth on the ladder and are coming off a thrilling 18-16 victory over the Gungahlin Bulls, while the Bulldogs returned to the winners’ circle on the weekend through a 26-16 win over the Woden Valley Rams. Bulldogs fullback Tyler Cornish is well aware of the tough challenge the Warriors pose.
“They got us in the first round of games up here in west Belconnen,” he said. “Another tough match. We will to have to grind hard and fight really hard to win that one.” Gungahlin Bulls v Tuggeranong Bushrangers, 3pm Sunday at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval Two big strugglers will meet on Sunday when the Bulls and Bushrangers face off. The Bulls and Bushrangers have recorded just a trio of wins in 2017, so both sides will be desperate to clinch victory on the weekend as they look to remain in contention for finals berths. The Bulls will have to make amends for their two-point loss to the Warriors, while the Bushrangers will have to bounce back from their 32-12 defeat to the Kangaroos. The Woden Valley Rams will enjoy a buy in Round 11.
Open Women’s 9’s Preview: Raiders v Sharks The Canberra Raiders Women’s 9’s outfit will be out to cause an upset this Sunday when they travel to Sydney to take on the Cronulla Sharks at Southern Cross Group Stadium. Having gone down to the Sharks 28-10 earlier in the year, Raiders coach, Sharleen Coomber, has encouraged her team to take risks in attack. “Last time we were too predictable,” Coomber said. “At halftime the score was close but obviously the Sharks ran away with the game with their fitness. We’ve really worked on our ball skills since so hopefully that comes out this weekend. “What let us down last time was our fitness. The Sharks had been training for three months while we had been training for two or three weeks.” With regular captain Paremo Marsh injured, Gabrielle Suckling takes over the captaincy duties and is excited by message given out by her coach. “We do have our set play but Sharleen said to go out there, have some fun and do what you think will secure the win,” Suckling said. “A lot of us girls have played a few times now so we can just throw the ball around and do our thing.” With most of the squad being heavily involved in the Canberra Region Open Women’s Tackle Competition, the squad looks better prepared for Sunday’s match.
“We are going in with a little more confidence than the first time we played them because we’ve all been playing in our local competition,” Suckling said. Speaking about the opportunity to lead the girls out onto Southern Cross Group Stadium, the 21 year old was thrilled with the chance. “I’m very privileged, it’s only my second Raiders game and I get to lead them which is very exciting,” Suckling said. “They’ve all been so good and we all get around each other so it’s going to be easy with the bunch of girls that we’ve got.” The game kicks off at 2:45pm this Sunday at Southern Cross Group Stadium.
Young Dragons ready to prove a point The Valley Dragons have “come to prove a point” in this year’s Open Women’s Tackle competition, according to captain Tayla Croker. Boasting one of the youngest teams in the competition, the Dragons continued to push their case as a finals contender with a 40-0 win against a valiant West Belconnen Warriors outfit at Greenway Oval on Friday night. “Most of our players being from Tarsha Gale Cup means that we are a lot younger than the rest of the teams, most of us are under 18,” Croker said. “We’ve come to prove the point that just because we are younger, it doesn’t mean we are not experienced, we are just as good or better.” The Dragons marked their intention in the first minute of the game when Sandra Dalton crossed the line to score but according to Croker, their performance didn’t meet their own standards. “We didn’t really lift our intensity at all from the start,” Croker said. “In the first minute, we scored a try from the kickoff, it was from then that the enthusiasm went down.” The Warriors defended in numbers and saved a certain try minutes later when Sharna Turton made a desperate diving tackle to prevent Alannah Fraser from scoring. However, the Warrior’s resistance was unable to last much longer and Dragons prop Nirvana Ngan-Woo broke the line and steamrolled over the fullback to score. The tries kept coming for the Dragons as Dorothy Carroll scored a double while Caitlin Fazey-Robinson, Emylee Hawke and Jana Teivonen all scored a try each. However, the highlight of the evening came late in the second half when Ngan-Woo busted through the line before managing to offload to halfback Chloe Smith who scored under the posts. “I was pleased with that,” said Ngan-Woo. “It’s good to know the girls are always supporting and that they have your back.” Although Ngan-Woo was pleased with that passage of play, she echoed her captain’s words when reflecting on the match as a whole. “There’s areas that I need to improve on and we all need to improve on, but it’s only up from here,” NganWoo said. “We need to improve our talking – there wasn’t enough talking out there -, our defence and just our communication overall.” The win sees the Valley Dragons further cement their position in fourth place, while the West Belconnen Warriors drop down one place to sixth.

Boomanulla Raiders’ Family and Community Day 24 June Keith Tournier Oval, Ainslie Our highlight community event this year will be our Family and Community and NAIDOC Game Day scheduled for our home game on 24 June -vs- UC Grizzlies. Boomanulla Raiders Rugby League builds on a proud history of Indigenous rugby league in Canberra and regional based competitions and NAIDOC week is significant for our club. We will host youth groups from Gugan-Gulwan playing a touch football game be drawing our raffle winners on the day and have great food and entertainment for the kids. With the support of the ACT branch of Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation, we have commissioned a NAIDOC week jersey for our men and women’s teams by local artist, Esma Livermore. These specially designed NAIDOC jumpers will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds going to Gugan-Gulwan Aboriginal youth centre.
If you would like your stall there on the day, contact Boomanulla via Facebook: www.facebook.com/Boomanulla or call: 0414 466 186
