Canberra Raiders Cup First Grade - Round 1 Wrap Up By Ricky Kelly Gungahlin Bulls 24: Tries - D Cooper-Shields, C McAskill, R O’Sullivan, S Opo Goals - J Scholes 4 defeated West Belconnen Warriors 12: Tries A Greenwood, C Greenwood, T Freeman-Quay The Gungahlin Bulls defeated reigning premiers West Belconnen Warriors 24-12 in their opening round clash at Gungahlin Oval on Saturday. Gungahlin proved to be the better side in the first half and West Belconnen’s defence couldn’t cope. Notable tries to Rourke O’Sullivan, Sato Ketia-Opo and Dale Cooper-Shields set the tone for the first half, giving the Bulls a 16-8 lead at the break. The second half saw the Warriors improve slightly, however failing to hold on to the ball cost them as they looked to get back into the match. Aiden Greenwood scored the Warriors only try in the second half adding plenty of energy off the bench. The Bulls ground their way to a 12 point win and coach David Howell was pleased with their performance against the premiers. “It's a good test for us [against the reigning premiers] to see where we're at. We had a few questions asked against [Queanbeyan] Roos in the trials and the boys really turned up today,” he said. Queanbeyan Blues 68: Tries - J Baker, D Beath, M Cullen, M Day, F Fainifo, T Ruediger 2, B Spears, T Stevens, B Taueki 3, T Tui Goals - T Campese 7, T Ruediger defeated Belconnen United Sharks 6: Tries - T Sione Goals - D Eason It was raining tries at O’Connor enclosed oval on Saturday as a Terry Campese masterclass led the Queanbeyan Blues to a 62-point thrashing of the Belconnen United Sharks.

Blues halfback David Beath scored the first try less than two minutes into the match on the back of a strong solo effort that saw him slice through the line. It was one way traffic in the first half as Queanbeyan finished off the opening forty minutes through a Branden Taueki try giving them a 36-0 lead. Belconnen scored their first and only points through a strong try from prop forward Tino Sione. However momentum shifted right back to Queanbeyan as they posted a further 28 points in the last 28 minutes. Captain and coach Terry Campese showed just how threatening he can be in the halves, setting

up consecutive tries, notably throwing a nice cut out pass that put Tyler Stevens into space which lead to the Blues tenth try. The Sharks will need to improve next week as they travel to Yass facing a Magpies team fresh off a bye Woden Valley Rams 23: Tries – M Gilmour 3, M Geiger, J Hickson Goals: R Leapai Field Goal: C Johnson defeated Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 22: Tries – C Hart, P Cooke, T Greenwood, T Hazelton Goals – C Hart, B Hewitt 2 The Woden Valley Rams got their season off to a good start, defeating the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs by one point on Sunday at Workers Arena. Woden got the ball rolling when second row Michael Gilmour crashed over for the opening points making it 4-0. The Rams then raced to an 18-0 lead after 27 minutes when Gilmour completed his hat-trick. Goulburn eventually got some points on the board through a Thomas Hazelton try making it 18-6 at half-time. Goulburn scored again three minutes after the break through a strong run from Fullback Christopher Hart. With five minutes remaining in the match Goulburn crossed the line before nailing the following touchline conversion. However, Woden’s halfback Carl Johnson kicked the winning field goal on the stroke of fulltime to give the Rams the win. Queanbeyan Kangaroos 32: Tries – B Crisp 2, M Connolly, T Aroha-Tuinauvai, J Simbiken, J Essex Goals – B Crisp 4 defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 16: Tries – J Tauti, J Mitchell, B Hensen Goals – J Mitchell 2 The Queanbeyan Kangaroos started their 2017 season nicely with a hard fought 32-16 home win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers. The Kangaroos opened the scoring inside three minutes before the Bushrangers hit back when centre Cody Hodge crashed over in the corner. Tuggeranong found the lead twenty five minutes into the first half before the Kangaroos levelled things up three minutes later. At 10-10 with four minutes remaining in the half, Tuggeranong found the lead through a strong try from Joshua Mitchell giving them a 16-10 lead at half time. It was all Queanbeyan in the second half scoring an unanswered 22 points, as five-eighth Brent Crisp bagged a double. Queanbeyan will look to continue their winning form when they take on the Queanbeyan Blues at Seiffert Oval next week.

Canberra Raiders Cup First Grade - Round 2 Preview By James Coman Tuggeranong Bushrangers vs Gungahlin Bulls, 3pm Saturday at Greenway Oval The Gungahlin Bulls will be looking to make it two in a row when they take on the Tuggeranong Bushrangers this Saturday. The Bulls are coming off a strong win over West Belconnen, trumping their rivals 24-12 in a match heavily influenced by conversions. However, the Bushrangers were beaten by the Queanbeyan Roos 32-16, dampening their spirits before this week’s match up. Tuggeranong Coach Justin Giteau, believes it isn’t all bad news from last week, saying his team is better off for the loss. “We gained experience from it and learnt how to close out a game and go for a full 80 minutes,” Giteau said. “I was happy with the effort but the execution we need to work on this week.” “If we can go out with the same effort and improve our execution and work on things we need to work on we will be competitive.”

West Belconnen Warriors vs Goulburn Workers Bulldogs, 3pm Saturday at Raiders Belconnen After the disappointment of a one point loss last week, the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs will be looking to bounce back against the West Belconnen Warriors. The Bulldogs fell just one point shy of starting the season with a win after the Woden Valley Rams took the game away from them 23-22. West Belconnen’s start to the season wasn’t as close, going down to the Gungahlin Bulls 24-12 after only converting one of their three tries. West Belconnen Coach, Troy Thompson, says there is a lot to improve on for his

team after last week. “Improving on ball security from last week is important,” Thompson said. “We completed 2 out of 14 sets in the second half last week. I think our fundamentals, catching passing and work ethic was just gone.” Queanbeyan Blues vs Queanbeyan Kangaroos, 3pm Saturday at Seiffert Oval The Queanbeyan derby is set to fire this weekend as both teams fight for back-toback wins to start their season. The Blues are full of confidence after they trounced the West Belconnen Blues 68-8 in a comprehensive victory. But the Roo’s are just as dangerous after they beat the Tuggeranong Bushrangers 3216 in a confident display. The Blues are boasting the return of Raiders great Terry Campese and injured Blues second rower, Naseri Naseri, says the team has gained a lot from his presence “Last year we had two to three halves and it was pretty scattered and all over the place,” Naseri said. “Now that we have Terry it’s more composed and structured which is good for us.” Yass Magpies vs Belconnen Sharks United, 3pm Saturday at Walker Park

The Yass Magpies will be looking to win their first game of the year as they take on the Belconnen Sharks. The Magpies sat out last week thanks to the bye and will be coming into the match well rested and keen to play. The Belconnen Sharks are coming off the back of a heavy loss to the Blues last week and will be desperate to put on a strong display and try to snag their first win of the year. Coach of the Magpies Steve Naughton, says the extended break was good for his players, and this year the Magpies have a well balance team. “We’re excited and keen to get playing after a long pre-season,” Naughton said. “A few new faces are keen to play their first game for the club.” “We are pretty well balanced across the park this year, we’ve got some good attacking football in us as long as we can play consistently and complete sets.”

League in the Big Apple Like a lot of Rugby League players, I don’t remember ever not playing the game. I grew up from a young age playing with my brothers, friends and sometimes even in tough games against myself. I played a lot of my Junior reps with South Sydney and a few years later as I was working and playing in the local A-grade competition I heard about an American competition. I put the career on hold and boarded a plane to New York City, that was 6 years ago and I haven’t looked back. I am currently doing a short stint in the North of England then it’s back to the States in late May for our domestic season where I help run and coach the White Plains Wombats in New York.

Matt Walsh

The White Plains Wombats went through our inaugural season last year and came out with plenty of positives and narrowly missed out on the finals due to a small technicality. The Philadelphia Fight have been the stand out team for the last few years but we are confident we can get up in the mix this season. In the last few years the USA competition has seen tremendous growth, the standard of play has increased and you now have teams that have quality players across the board. Americans are being introduced to the game earlier and it is really making a difference in their understanding and ability to read the game. The game moves fairly fast here, as most teams do not get too carried away with the wrestle and it makes for some entertaining footy. The Wombats have organized a pre-season game in Toronto against the Brantford Bulls on May 20. It is the first time a USA domestic team will play a Canadian domestic team and we are thrilled to be leading the way in this growth of the game in North America. We will be playing in a curtain raiser for a Toronto Wolfpack home match. Having previously played on the USA National team in Toronto I know the atmosphere and crowd there is electric so it should be a great event. Please follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at WhitePlainWombatsXIII

Matt Walsh is a correspondent for the Rugby League Record who will write a fortnightly column about his experiences playing and coaching rugby league in the USA. His side, the White Plains Wombats is based in New York and compete in the USA Rugby League competition.
