Canberra Raiders Cup First Grade - Round 5 Preview Tuggeranong Bushrangers v Woden Valley Rams, 3pm Saturday at Greenway Having beaten the previously undefeated Yass Magpies last weekend, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers host the Woden Valley Rams in this week’s live stream match. Despite losing Matt Lyons and Michael Brophy to injury, the Bushrangers put in one of the gutsiest performances of the season to claim the win which was pleasing to their coach Justin Giteau.
“It’s good to get those wins but they are wins you need to get if you have aspirations of playing finals too,” Giteau said. “We still aren’t playing outstanding footy, but it was good to get the two points.” Woden enter the match on the back of their first loss of the season, having suffered a narrow 30-22 loss against current premiers, West Belconnen Warriors. Gungahlin Bulls v Goulburn Workers Bulldogs, 3pm Saturday at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval Goulburn welcomed back local junior Tyler Cornish for last weekend’s loss against the Queanbeyan Kangaroos but will be hoping for a better result against the Gungahlin Bulls. Having made his NRL debut for the Gold Coast Titans earlier this year, Cornish returned home to Goulburn to represent his hometown. The Bulls, on the other hand, won their first game since round one as they came from behind to secure a 36-18 win against the Belconnen United Sharks. Gungahlin coach Lincoln Withers was happy to see his side showcase their ability to turn the match around. “The last couple of years we’ve struggled when we’ve gone behind,” Withers said. “The boys, at halftime they weren’t doing what we were practicing all week, but they clicked back into gear and did what they were meant to do.” “At the back end of the game, I thought they played really well.”
West Belconnen Warriors v Belconnen United Sharks, 3pm Saturday at Raiders Belconnen The defending premiers have had an indifferent start to the season but secured a narrow win against the previously undefeated Woden Valley Rams last week.
Entering the Belconnen derby, the Warriors will be looking to build on the win but according to their coach, Troy Thompson, not an impressive performance. “I wouldn’t say [our performance] was impressive,” Thompson said. “In patches, we played some really good footy, but in patches, we also played some really bad footy too.”
“It’s a work in progress. We aren’t really there just yet, but the boys are getting better each week which is a positive.” Standing in their way this week is a determined Belconnen Sharks outfit who dominated the early stages of their match last weekend against the Bulls. Although the Sharks haven’t managed to claim a win so far this season, their performances in recent weeks have been much improved since the start of the season. Queanbeyan Blues v Yass Magpies, 3pm Saturday at Seiffert Oval The Queanbeyan Blues have been unstoppable so far this season and currently sit on top of the table with four wins. Having enjoyed the bye last weekend, the Blues face the Yass Magpies who will be looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season. Queanbeyan Blues captain-coach, Terry Campese, expects a tough game against the high-flying Magpies. “It’ll be a competitive game,” Campese said. “I’ve been watching them closely. They’ve started the season well.”

Monaro ready for Country Championships
The Monaro representative sides begin their Country Championship campaigns this weekend with both the Ladies League Tag and U23s Men’s side heading to Cowra to take on the Western Rams. In the opening round of the knockout tournament, both the men and women will be hoping to defeat the Rams to progress to the next stage.
In last year’s inaugural Ladies League Tag tournament the Monaro women were eliminated from the first round but will be hoping for an improved performance this year. Last year’s men side made the semi-finals but the change from open men’s teams to U23’s teams means that the competition is wide open. This weekend’s matches take place at Sid Kallas Oval, Cowra with the League Tag match starting at 11am and the U23’s side starting at 12pm.

Legends Support Men of League Gala Dinner The Canberra Monaro Men of League are hosting a Gala Dinner on Friday 21st July at the Queanbeyan Kangaroos Club to raise money to assist people who are or have been involved in rugby league and have fallen upon hard times.
Photo: Canberra Times
Men of League founder and current Chairman, Ron Coote, will be in attendance along with his fellow legend & South Sydney great, Bob McCarthy as will 2017 ACT Australian of the Year & former Canberra Raiders captain, Alan Tongue, Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart and Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy.

Tickets for the dinner are $70 per person or $650 for a table of ten. If you would like to attend this event and help raise money for Men in League, please contact Sue Gerrard (email: canberramonaro@menofleague.com call: 0406 378 086) by Friday 5th May but be quick because seating is limited.
