CRRL Supports ‘Shoosh for Kids’ Canberra Region Rugby League is supporting the NSW Office of Sport's campaign 'Shoosh for Kids' to promote positive sideline behaviour at junior sporting events. Running from 15 to 21 May Canberra Region Rugby League is encouraging all members to support the cause, with the aim of keeping kids playing sport.

Canberra Region Rugby League General Manager, Mark Vergano, said it is important for parents and officials to be an influence in building children's self esteem rather than reinforce negativety. "Our game is built on respect. Respect for the rules, respect for fair play and respect for our officials," Vergano said. "We want Shoosh for Kids week to reflect the positive nature of our game with appreciation by applauding positive performances. Shoosh gives us time to think and react in a positive manner, not the emotional outburst that is later regretted." Office of Sport Chief Executive Matt Miller said sport is such an important part of our lives, with so many recognised health and social benefits. We want to ensure that all players, officials and spectators, have a positive experience.

“We want everyone, especially children, to continue their involvement in sport because it’s a fun and encouraging environment for everyone. “Most people do the right thing. However, the sports we are working with want to remind spectators that there is no place for negative comments in local sport,” Mr Miller said.

If your comment is negative, then SHOOSH! If your comment is directed at a player, then SHOOSH! If you comment is directed at a referee or match official, then SHOOSH! Reward good play by both teams with applause; if you can’t then SHOOSH! Show respect to players and game officials. Remember it’s their game. Winter sports supporting Shoosh for Kids Week include AFL NSW/ACT, Basketball NSW, Country Rugby League, Football NSW, Hockey NSW, Netball NSW and NSW Rugby Union.

Canberra Raiders Cup First Grade - Round 7 Preview By Zachery Gates Woden Valley Rams v Queanbeyan Blues, 3pm Saturday at Phillip District Oval This week's live stream match kicks off this weekend's Canberra Raiders Cup action when the third-placed Rams host the table-topping Queanbeyan Blues at Phillip District on Saturday. A win has proven elusive for Woden over the past three rounds, with the Rams having played out two draws and suffered a loss in what’s been nothing short of a rollercoaster of a ride in that time. The Rams have an eye on overcoming a Blues outfit that powered through the Yass Magpies 20-4 on the weekend to remain as the only undefeated side this season. Rams captain Sam Ferry is well aware of the threat the Blues pose. “They’re just a quality side,” he said. Tuggeranong Bushrangers v West Belconnen Warriors, 3pm Saturday at Greenway Both the fifth-placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers and West Belconnen Warriors will be looking to remain in contention with the top four when they meet at Greenway on Saturday. The Bushrangers played out the second Canberra Raiders Cup draw of the season when its match with the Woden Valley Rams resulted in a 16-all stalemate on the weekend. They will face a Warriors outfit eyeing off a return to the winners’ circle after a 34-20 loss to the Belconnen United Sharks. Yass Magpies v Queanbeyan Kangaroos, 3pm Saturday at Walker Park The fourth-placed Magpies will look to consolidate their position in the top four when they meet the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Walker Park on Saturday. They will have to bounce back from their 20-4 defeat at the hands of the clinical Blues on the weekend, a task that won’t come easy against a high-flying Kangaroos side feeling fresh off the back of a bye.

Perched in second on the ladder, they have only dropped one game in 2017 and have run in a half-century of points in each of their last two outings. Magpies halfback Scott Naughton expects the game to be won and lost in the forwards. “I think in the forwards,” Naughton said. “They’ve got a big, physical pack. If our boys can match it with them I think we’re within half a chance.” Goulburn Workers Bulldogs v Belconnen United Sharks, 2pm Sunday at Workers Arena In the final Round 7 fixture, a bottom-of-thetable clash will play out when the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs play host to the Belconnen United Sharks at Workers Arena on Sunday. The Bulldogs and Sharks may both be floundering at the bottom of the ladder, but both recorded wins on the weekend. The Bulldogs clinched their second win from six starts in disposing of the Gungahlin Bulls 32-24 away from home, while the Sharks snagged their first win of the season in their 34-20 win over the reigning premiers. Bulldogs prop Sam Conlon said his side will have to be switched on from kick-off on Sunday. “They’re a real confidence team,” Conlon said. “It’s not just the fact they’ve had a win." "If you don’t aim up and compete early they’re a chance of getting away from you. The fact that they’ve come off a good win against Westies is huge for them.” Gungahlin will enjoy a bye this weekend.

Ottaway and Wood feature in historic clash By Ricky Kelly The inaugural Harvey Norman NSW Women’s City-Country Shield was played last Sunday in Sydney as the City girls ran in 20-8 winners over Country. Two girls from the Canberra region were chosen to play for Country, Samantha Wood from Queanbeyan Blues and Jennaya Ottaway from Goulburn Stockmen. Reflecting on the experience to play at such a high level, prop Jennaya Ottaway believes the clash was of a higher intensity than she is used to. “It was really good, it was different playing a much faster and more physical game against the city girls,” Ottaway said. Ottaway believes that getting a taste of the City-Country game has left her wanting to play more representative football, with the future goal of making the New South Wales team. “Hopefully the goal is next year to make the same side again and hopefully do really well and to potentially make the New South Wales side,” she said. Believing it was a massive surprise to be named in the team, Queanbeyan player Samantha Wood insists that it was great to be a part of the clash. “To be honest from the beginning it was a very big surprise to get named in the team, I started on the bench but when I came I took the opportunity and it was great to be a part of it”, Wood said. Wood, who only played rugby league occasionally as a kid was playing soccer before she decided to play league again. Her game for Country was her fifth rugby league match since coming back to the sport. With both girls having known each other from the Open Women’s Tackle competition and the Canberra Raiders Women’s side, Ottaway insists it was good to have a familiar face around the team in Samantha. “It was good, a lot of the other girls all knew each other and played against or with each other before, so it was good having one other person that didn’t know anyone else, that I knew, so that made me feel comfortable,” Ottaway said.
