2017 Canberra Raiders Cup Round 8 27th & 28th May 2017 Proudly sponsored by
Ricky Stuart Foundation Round Canberra Region Rugby League is proud to be supporting the Ricky Stuart Foundation this weekend to raise awareness for autism wellbeing. Canberra Region Rugby League General Manager, Mark Vergano said it was a special event for the local rugby league community to help the Ricky Stuart Foundation. “Rugby League continues to look after their own and to have the opportunity to help the Ricky Stuart Foundation from our Under 6s to Raiders First Grade is a special event in the life of our football community,” Vergano said. Having two children with autism himself, Vergano said it is reassuring for people in the Canberra region to have the facilities that the Ricky Stuart Foundation provides. “The Ricky Stuart Foundation does tremendous work in the area of respite care for both the children with autism and their parents,” Vergano said. “For parents to have a safe and caring environment to put their children and give them a chance to regenerate is so important for parental wellbeing as well.” One local player who has been fundraising for the foundation is 12-year-old Hudson Fogarty-Apps who has autism himself. The Bungendore Tigers junior has been fundraising at his local school and has even started his own Facebook page to try and raise money for autism wellbeing. When asked why he was going to so much effort, Hudson said he enjoys raising money for The Ricky Stuart Foundation.
Tooke Talk: New UC Grizzlies, Old Fashioned Club
The University of Canberra Grizzlies are the new team on the block and are very excited about joining a competitive and entertaining competition filled with history and passion. They may be a new club but they have an old fashioned way of doing things. The Grizzlies have undertaken a massive transformation over the last three years accumulating in the decision to change competitions from the NSW Tertiary League to the George Tooke Shield and the creation of the club’s inaugural Women’s League Tag side in 2017. During this time of change and growth the UC Grizzlies club board and coaching staff have instilled an ethical code in which the club is to follow to seek continued success. Each player that signs on to play for the UC Grizzlies is asked to pay a small registration fee. From the university student to the ex-first grader, regardless of your position or status you’re asked to put into the club. That ethos is continued at training where reputations are thrown out the window and hard work and dedication is rewarded. Negative comments are not tolerated and an environment where older players are encouraged to teach and aid the development of the younger squad members is well and truly in place. With a healthy squad size this year made up primarily of students with the added value of some experience both Men’s and Women’s teams have already bought into the “No one is bigger than the club” mentality.

Austbrokers Canberra Raiders Cup Round 7 Wrap
By James Coman Queanbeyan Blues 34 (Tries: D Beath, M Cullen, M Day, B Spears, T Stevens, B Taueki; Goals: T Campese 5) defeated Woden Valley Rams 16 (Tries: M Gilmore, I Cotric, S Henderson; Goals: C Johnson 2) The Blues have recorded their 6th win of the season and reaffirm their place atop of the Canberra Cup ladder after they cruised past a tough Woden Valley Rams outfit. The Rams were more than competitive against the Blues crossing over the try line for three tries with Carl Johnson able to convert two of them. But the Terry Campese lead Blues were once again too clinical, outscoring the Rams and sealing another victory. The Blues come up against the West Belconnen Warriors next week while the Rams have another hard match against the Queanbeyan Roos.
Queanbeyan Kangaroos 37 (Tries: B Crisp 2, B Cronan, S Dunn, J Dent, G Afemui, D Reid; Goals: B Crisp 3, J Essex; Field Goal: J Essex) defeated Yass Magpies 12 (Tries: S Davis, W Peace; Goals: S Davis 2) The Queanbeyan Roos have put together a complete performance to beat the Yass Magpies in a match with nine tries and even a field goal. The Roos were too good for the Magpies who struggled to stop the rampaging Queanbeyan team from finding points. The Roos ran in seven tries against the Magpies who struggled to contain their big men. A double from Brent Crisp helped the Roos confidence but a field goal from Joshua Essex would be the cherry on the top for the Roos as they look ahead to next week’s game against
the Woden Valley Rams. As for the Magpies, they come up against an evenly matched Gungahlin Bulls squad next week and will be looking to move further up the table. West Belconnen Warriors 36 (Tries: S Finnegan 2, L Ashlin, C Brebner, T Sloman, C Thorley; Goals Joshua Essex 6) defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 26 (Tries: B Donovan 2, W Tauti, J Mitchell, L Oakley; Goals: J Mitchell 2, Q Cannan) The West Belconnen Warriors have secured an important win after they held out the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in a tight contest. Both teams were strong in attack with the Warriors crossed for six tries while the Bushrangers recorded five. But it was goal kicking which proved to be a big part of the match with Wests Belconnen’s Joshua Essex converting all six of his teams tries while Tuggeranong were only able to kick three goals. The Warriors will come up against the top of the table Queanbeyan Blues next week while the Bushrangers face a much improved Belconnen United Sharks. Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 28 (Tries: M Picker 2, M White, D Stephens, Z Hart; Goals: B Hewitt 2, C Hart 2) defeated Belconnen United Sharks 14 (Tries: V Kitione, M Butz, A Pelasio; Goals: D Eason) The Goulburn Workers Bulldogs have run home winners thanks to a double from captain coach Michael Picker, to record their third win of the season. The Bulldogs ran in four tries in the first half to go into the sheds with a 22-4 advantage. The Sharks scored first points in the second half as a comeback slowly began to cultivate. But it was the former Raider Michael Picker who led his team to victory, crossing for his second try late in the half to put the result beyond doubt. The Bulldogs are now just one win outside of the top four but will get to enjoy a well-earned rest this week as they have the bye. The Sharks will come up against the Tuggeranong Bushrangers this weekend and will be looking to make full use of their home ground advantage.

Canberra Raiders Cup First Grade - Round 8 Preview By Zachery Gates
Belconnen United Sharks v Tuggeranong Bushrangers, 3pm Saturday at O’Connor, streamed live Both the Belconnen United Sharks and Tuggeranong Bushrangers will be desperate to turn their inconsistent starts to the season around when they lock horns at O’Connor on Saturday afternoon. The ninth-placed Sharks and fifth-placed Bushrangers both suffered defeats on the weekend, the Sharks going down 28-14 to the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs and Tuggeranong 36-26 to the West Belconnen Warriors. Bushrangers prop Michael Uluakiola said that although his side’s forwards are outdone in size, they don’t lack fight. “They are dangerous in the middle, they’ve got big boys,” Uluakiola said. “We’re small but we’ve got heart.” Sharks halfback Darcy Eason said his side needs to learn to turn close games into wins but was pleased by their win against the Warriors two weeks ago. “Beating last year’s premiers, West Belconnen, definitely brought the morale up of the team,” Eason said. “We just need to turn those close losses into close wins.” Gungahlin Bulls v Yass Magpies, 3pm Saturday at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval The seventh-placed Gungahlin Bulls and sixth-placed Yass Magpies will look to remain in close range of the top four when they cross swords at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls are set to hurtle out of the gates having enjoyed the luxury of a bye on the weekend, while the Magpies have an eye on clinching their first win since Round 3.
They have since played out a 24-all draw and lost three-straight games, the last of which came through a 37-12 steamrolling at the hands of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Woden Valley Rams, 3pm Saturday at Seears Workwear Oval Twenty-five minutes away, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos will host the Woden Valley Rams at Seears Workwear Oval on Saturday afternoon. The Kangaroos will be on the hunt for their fifth-consecutive win they welcome the Rams, the most recent of which was stamped with their 3712 thrashing of the Magpies. A win over Woden could elevate the Kangaroos into first on the ladder, a position currently occupied by cross-town rivals the Queanbeyan Blues. On the side of the ledger, the Rams will be out to make amends for a 34-16 loss to the Blues on the weekend as they look to further entrench themselves in the top four. Queanbeyan Blues v West Belconnen Warriors, 3pm Saturday at Seiffert Oval This year’s table-toppers will meet last year’s premiers when the undefeated Blues host the Warriors at Seiffert Oval on Saturday afternoon. Both sides recorded wins in high-scoring affairs on the weekend to consolidate their positions in the top four. The Blues rained on the Rams’ home parade in clinching their 34-16 win, while the Warriors also nabbed an away win in overpowering Tuggeranong in their 36-26 victory.
