Sammy Says Its been a few weeks since my last catchup but I’m glad to report it has been fairly successful for myself and the team at Wakefield Trinity. Three weeks ago we went through to the next stage of the challenge cup which is the knockout competition in the U.K with a comfortable win over Championship team Dewsbury Rams at Dewsbury. It was also the smallest field I have ever played on with both the length and width shorter to what is expected! Former Raider, Sam Williams

The cup gives the lower tier clubs an opportunity to make a name for themselves against Super League clubs, making it a physical match but the team did what was needed without any problems. The next match in the cup is against Salford at Salford which will prove to be much more difficult with Salford second on the ladder. In terms of the Premiership season we have won our last five and sit equal third on the table with Leeds. The past month has seen us skip clear of the bottom four and put us in a position to play in the big matches at the end of the season.

Last weekend saw another ‘Easter period’ where we play matches on both Friday and Monday to make up for a pre arranged England camp. These schedules have the majority of the players upset with plenty of injuries on the Monday game with the short turn around between matches meaning more fatigued bodies and more injuries. We managed to beat both Huddersfield at home and Wigan away and play an entertaining style of footy along the way. The sun is out longer and the grounds have firmed up making it much faster to what we played on at the start of the season allowing a much better product on the field. It has been a big start to the season for my home club the Cooma Stallions who sit undefeated at the top of the group 16 table and appear to be travelling along really well, hopefully it can continue until the end of the season as its been a few years between drinks for the club. Lastly congratulations to the skipper Jarrod Croker bringing up 200 games for his junior club the Canberra Raiders, it’s a massive achievement for anyone but at his age the record books could be changing over the next few years and he is what the club is about. Anway until next time good luck to all clubs in the ACT region both juniors and seniors.

Tooke Talk: Chris Turner Memorial Shield Like most small bush rugby league clubs, the Boorowa Rovers struggle for every dime to keep their side afloat each year in a market where to win a premiership these days, deep pockets are needed. But like so many rugby league clubs, Boorowa recognises that it's not just about the money, it's about the love of the game. For the past three seasons, the Boorowa Rovers have held a special day each March to support the well known charity “Beyond Blue in its continual battle against depression. In early 2015, the club lost one of its favourite sons, Chris Turner, to this debilitating illness. Chris also played for the UC Grizzlies and together with the Boorowa Rovers, these two teams now play an annual trial game for the Chris Turner Memorial Shield. Both the Rovers and the UC Grizzlies are now in the George Tooke Shield making this clash even more interesting. Together, these two teams have raised considerable funds in the thousands of dollars over the past three seasons with the annual day and night proving extremely successful. Funds have been raised, friendships have been forged and a mate is remembered as the continual battle against this illness is fought. The Boorowa Rovers are looking at a very successful season this year with some smart recruitment and some promising local players coming through the junior ranks. Win lose or draw, they will always hold that one special day each March when we all remember that despite the importance of winning a premiership and spending whatever it takes to win a crown, it really is only a game, the greatest game of all.

Austbrokers Canberra Raiders Cup Round 8 Wrap By James Coman Tuggeranong Bushrangers 44 (Tries: Q Cannon 3, B Bonovan 2, I Afemui, J Heyman, J Pollard, N Chudleigh; Goals: Oakley 3, J Mitchell) defeated Belconnen Sharks 24 (Tries: S. Tatipata 2, M. Kirk, J. Brown; Goals: D. Eason 4) The Tuggeranong Bushrangers have put together one of their best performances of the season to defeat the Belconnen Sharks in a confident display. Despite holding the lead for the opening quarter of the match, the Sharks defence began to weaken as the Bushrangers forwards started to break down the line. With the hard work done and the platform laid, the Bushrangers attack started to fire as they ran in nine tries to take the lead and run away with the match. The win moves the Bushrangers up two spots into third, but they will have a tough game next Saturday when they take on the Queanbeyan Blues at home. The Sharks remain on the bottom of the table but will enjoy a much needed rest this week as they have the bye. Yass Magpies 24 (Tries: Scott Naughton, Steven Naughton, Shaun Davis, William Peace; Goals: Shaun Davis 4) defeated Gungahlin Bulls 18 (Tries: Michael Sollis, Luke Jones, Sheen Lomax, Harley Smith-Shields; Goals: Daniel Keir) A second half comeback from the Yass Magpies has moved them into the top four as they trumped a determined Gungahlin Bulls outfit to sneak home winners. Down 14-6 at halftime, The Magpies piled on 18 points in quick succession to steal the lead from the Bulls, largely thanks to the pin-point kicking ofShaun Davis. Despite finishing on four tries each, it was the boot of Davis which gave Yass the advantage, converting all four of the Magpie’s tries when the Bulls could only managed to convert one. The Magpies will now face the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs at home next Saturday as

the Bulls look to bounce back against the Woden Valley Rams. Queanbeyan Blues 26 (Tries: T Stevens, F Fanifo, B Taueki, M Cullen; Goals: T Campese 3) defeated West Belconnen Warriors 16 (Tries: R. Fulivai, B. Graham, D. KillickMoran; Goals: A. Mcdonald 2) The Queanbeyan Blues have secured their seventh win of the season after they held off a resilient West Belconnen Warriors fight to stay on top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder. The Warriors gave the unbeaten Blues a fright with strong defence and some well executed attack putting them right in the contest. However two quick tries in the second half from the hands of captain and star player Terry Campese gave the Blues enough of an advantage to hold off the Warriors attack and go home winners. The Blues now look ahead to next Saturday as they take on the Tuggeranong Bushrangers away. As for the Warriors they come up against another Queanbeyan team in the Kangaroos but will enjoy the home ground advantage this time around. Queanbeyan Kangaroos 40 (Tries, L Dumas 2, B Crisp 2, J Kiely 2, G Afemui, M Connolly; Goals: B Crisp 4) defeated Woden Valley Rams 14 (Tries: L. Johnson, M. Gilmour, K. Vaetoe; Goals: C. Johnson) The Queanbeyan Kangaroos have cruised past the Woden Valley Rams in a clinical display for their sixth win of the season. Despite opening the scoring, the Rams had no answers for the pin-point kicking and speed of the Kangaroos. The Roos edge attack was on fire with Dumas, Crisp and Kiely all crossing over for doubles and helping guide their side to an easy victory. Off the back of a big win, the Roos will head down to Belconnen full of confidence when they take on the West Belconnen Warriors next Saturday. The Rams will look to make full use of a home game next weekend when they take on the Gungahlin Bulls knowing a win could move them into the top four.

Canberra Raiders Cup First Grade - Round 9 Preview By Ricky Kelly West Belconnen Warriors v Queanbeyan Kangaroos, 3pm Sunday 4th June at Raiders Belconnen, Streamed Live Although the West Belconnen Warriors managed to beat the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in last year’s grand final, the Warriors face a difficult task this Sunday. Sitting in second place on the ladder, the Kangaroos have been in impressive form having won their last three matches by more than 20 points. For West Belconnen is has been mixed as of late, narrowly losing to the Blues last week and winning the week before against the Bushrangers. Speaking ahead of the Grand Final rematch, Kangaroos captain coach, Aaron Gorrell, said his side weren’t focusing too much on their opposition. “We need to keep our own backyard in order and improve every week,” Gorrell said. Key to their chances this weekend is their influential five-eighth, Brent Crisp who leads the competition for the most tries and goals. “He’s been one of the best players in the competition for the last couple of years,” Gorrell said. “He’s on fire in all aspects of his game. He’s massive for us but we need everyone doing their job.” The Kangaroos are currently sitting in 2nd on the ladder and the Warriors are sitting in 5th. West Belconnen will be out to impress in front of a home crowd seeking to push towards a finals spot. Tuggeranong Bushrangers v Queanbeyan Blues, 3pm Saturday 3rd June, Greenway The third placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers face off against an undefeated Queanbeyan Blues outfit in a mouth-watering match up. The Bushrangers are coming off a big twenty point win against the Sharks whilst the Queanbeyan Blues were strong in a ten point win over West Belconnen. This could be the hardest test yet for the Blues, travelling all the way down to Greenway from Queanbeyan, having to face an in form Bushrangers on their home soil. Dayne Ewings from the Bushrangers says that they are definitely ready to cause an upset and is excited to play the best team in the competition at the moment. “Obviously we want to win every game we can, but it will be good to test ourselves because obviously they’re unbeaten and going pretty well, so it will be good to see what it takes to play the top team”, he said.

Woden Valley Rams v Gungahlin Bulls, 3pm Saturday 3rd June, Phillip District Both these two sides will be eager to turn around their current form in order to push hard for a finals spot with the Bulls currently second last on the ladder and the Rams sitting in sixth. Last week the Rams were taught a lesson away to the Kangaroo’s and the week before that they were beaten convincingly by the Blues. Two tough games and now with a great opportunity to get a win back against a struggling Gungahlin side. Coming off a bye leading into round 8 the Bulls suffered a disappointing loss at home to the Yass Magpies. Gungahlin have scored the least amount of points compared to any team this season whilst the Rams are not far behind at 3 rd in that category. Woden Second Row Michael Gilmour believes the game will be won by being clinical in taking chances when it matters. “With both teams it’s a fitness battle, seeing who can last longest and be the most clinical as in no dropped balls and keeping errors low, and just getting into the grind”, he said. Yass Magpies v Goulburn Workers Bulldogs, 3pm Saturday 3rd June, Walker Park A fourth placed Yass Magpies will square off against the seventh placed Bulldogs side that will be fresh coming off a bye last week. The Magpies soared to a gutsy 24-18 win over the Bulls in Gungahlin last Saturday as they will be eager to improve on that form in front of a home crowd at Walker Park. In terms of contests, this match shapes up to be very unpredictable as both teams have been plagued by inconsistency throughout the season. Yass Magpies centre Willie Pearce insists the ‘Highway Rivalry’ clash is just like any other game of footy. “We have got a couple of boys that have come from Goulburn, it’s like any team but I guess, we will need to get on top of them and put our best foot forward”, he said. A win for Yass could propel their season and help them remain inside the top four while a win for Goulburn could see them move up to third on the table.

Raiders Coach Local Coaches

Canberra Raiders Head Coach, Ricky Stuart, and assistant coaches Dean Pay and Mick Crawley met with 120 local coaches last Tuesday night to assist them with their coaching programs for junior players. The three coaches discussed different training drills and other ideas to help develop the basic skills of junior players while ensuring kids were enjoying playing rugby league. “It was great to be out amongst the local coaches,” said Raiders Assistant Coach Mick Crawley. “It’s a good opportunity for us to discuss coaching with likeminded people.” “It’s important for us to stress the basic fundamentals of rugby league to the local coaches. Coaching isn’t rocket science but it’s important for us to make sure kids enjoy training and playing.” NRL Game Development Officer, Adam Kyle, said he appreciated the Raiders coaching staff taking the time to focus on grassroots football. “It was great to see Ricky, Dean and Mick teaching our local coaches,” said Kyle. “Having the Raiders coaching staff speak to so many of the coaches in the region allows us to get the message across that rugby league is a fun experience and winning isn’t the be all and end all.” “The development of players is the most important outcome. We want kids in the Canberra region to improve their basic core skills so they can be the best possible players they can.” “For this to happen, coaches need to be able to teach kids these basic skills. Having the Raiders coaching staff run through training drills with the local coaches is a great display of commitment to developing local players.”

Boomanulla Raiders’ Family and Community Day 24 June Keith Tournier Oval, Ainslie Our highlight community event this year will be our Family and Community and NAIDOC Game Day scheduled for our home game on 24 June -vs- UC Grizzlies. Boomanulla Raiders Rugby League builds on a proud history of Indigenous rugby league in Canberra and regional based competitions and NAIDOC week is significant for our club. We will host youth groups from Gugan-Gulwan playing a touch football game be drawing our raffle winners on the day and have great food and entertainment for the kids. With the support of the ACT branch of Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation, we have commissioned a NAIDOC week jersey for our men and women’s teams by local artist, Esma Livermore. These specially designed NAIDOC jumpers will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds going to Gugan-Gulwan Aboriginal youth centre.

If you would like your stall there on the day, contact Boomanulla via Facebook: www.facebook.com/Boomanulla or call: 0414 466 186
