Alan Tongue Tackling Family Violence The Boomanulla Raiders welcomed former Raiders captain Alan Tongue last week as he shared his “Stop. Think. Say No To Family Violence” program. The 2017 ACT Australian of the Year took the time to speak to both the Boomanulla men’s and ladies league tag sides during their mid-week training session. Tongue took over the training session as he ran through plenty of training drills to help emphasise the statistics of family violence before taking the team into the sheds for a presentation. Long time Boomanulla player, Peter Williams, was pleased to see the former Country representative teaching his side about the subject of family violence. “I just think it was great,” Williams said. “It was a really good learning curve for some of the boys. There’s a lot of young fathers in our group so we found it very rewarding.” Boomanulla Ladies League Tag captain Amie Dekantios also believed that Tongue’s program was invaluable for the playing group. “It was fantastic to have someone of that stature come and speak to us regarding such a high issue in society,” Dekantios said. “It’s important that everyone is aware of [family violence]. “Until you see the actual statistics, nobody really talks about it so it is important for Alan to come and speak to people - and to come to a local footy club, that’s great.” With one in three women having experienced physical violence, Tongue, a father of three daughters, was convinced to start his program to help educate people on the subject.

“We have a huge problem in our country and across the world,” Tongue said. “Those statistics of one in three women being affected by physical violence is something that worries me as a father. “I don’t want my children growing up in a community like that and I don’t want other people’s children growing up in a culture like that.” Since retiring from rugby league in 2011, Tongue has gone on to deliver his program across a variety of schools and has also become an ambassador for the NRL’s Voice Against Violence Program.

“I have an opportunity though the values that the game has taught me, an opportunity to get in front of people and have these sessions with the use of movement, activity, sport and rugby league as a way of connecting with people,” Tongue said. Having already delivered the program to the Gunning Roos, Tongue hopes to deliver the program to all of the rugby league clubs in the Canberra Region. “I was fortunate that through the Canberra Raiders and Dixon Advisories, I was able to receive some funding to run the programs which I am really grateful for,” Tongue said. “It’s an opportunity where I would like to speak to all of the local football clubs.”

Boomanulla Raiders’ Family and Community Day

24 June Keith Tournier Oval, Ainslie Our highlight community event this year will be our Family and Community and NAIDOC Game Day scheduled for our home game on 24 June -vs- UC Grizzlies. Boomanulla Raiders Rugby League builds on a proud history of Indigenous rugby league in Canberra and regional based competitions and NAIDOC week is significant for our club.

We will host youth groups from Gugan-Gulwan playing a touch football game be drawing our raffle winners on the day and have great food and entertainment for the kids. With the support of the ACT branch of Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation, we have commissioned a NAIDOC week jersey for our men and women’s teams by local artist, Esma Livermore. These specially designed NAIDOC jumpers will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds going to Gugan-Gulwan Aboriginal youth centre.

If you would like your stall there on the day, contact Boomanulla via Facebook: www.facebook.com/Boomanulla or call: 0414 466 186

SEE YOU THERE!

Open Women’s 9’s Preview: Raiders v Sharks The Canberra Raiders Women’s 9’s outfit will be out to cause an upset this Sunday when they travel to Sydney to take on the Cronulla Sharks at Southern Cross Group Stadium. Having gone down to the Sharks 28-10 earlier in the year, Raiders coach, Sharleen Coomber, has encouraged her team to take risks in attack. “Last time we were too predictable,” Coomber said. “At halftime the score was close but obviously the Sharks ran away with the game with their fitness. We’ve really worked on our ball skills since so hopefully that comes out this weekend. “What let us down last time was our fitness. The Sharks had been training for three months while we had been training for two or three weeks.” With regular captain Paremo Marsh injured, Gabrielle Suckling takes over the captaincy duties and is excited by message given out by her coach. “We do have our set play but Sharleen said to go out there, have some fun and do what you think will secure the win,” Suckling said. “A lot of us girls have played a few times now so we can just throw the ball around and do our thing.” With most of the squad being heavily involved in the Canberra Region Open Women’s Tackle Competition, the squad looks better prepared for Sunday’s match. “We are going in with a little more confidence than the first time we played them because we’ve all been playing in our local competition,” Suckling said. Speaking about the opportunity to lead the girls out onto Southern Cross Group Stadium, the 21 year old was thrilled with the chance. “I’m very privileged, it’s only my second Raiders game and I get to lead them which is very exciting,” Suckling said. “They’ve all been so good and we all get around each other so it’s going to be easy with the bunch of girls that we’ve got.” The game kicks off at 2:45pm this Sunday at Southern Cross Group Stadium.
