Tries: J Collins 2; Goals: S Davis Man of the Match: Tori Freeman-Quay West Belconnen Warriors 12 (Tries: C Scott, T Freeman-Quay; Goals: R Roberts 2) d Yass Magpies 10 (Tries: J Collins 2; Goals: S Davis)
Shaun Davis missed the conversion from the touchline meaning that the Magpies held only a four-point lead.
The West Belconnen Warriors have kept their title defence alive with a narrow 12-10 win over the Yass Magpies at Walker Park on Saturday afternoon.
Brilliance from West Belconnen captain Ryan McQueen levelled the scores as the halfback troubled the Yass defence before passing to Tori Freeman-Quay who scored.
Yass opened the scoring early in the second half when five-eighth Steve Naughton decided to run the ball from 30 metres out on the last tackle.
With only ten minutes left in the match, Bobby Roberts slotted the conversion to give the Warriors a two-point lead.
Having caught the Warriors defence off guard, Naughton initially escaped the Warriors defenders before offloading the ball which was subsequently kicked into the in goal for Yass winger, Jesse Collins. However, Cameron Scott scored in the left corner on the verge of halftime to send the teams into the shed with scores locked at 6-6. Jesse Collins gave Yass the lead midway through the second half with his second try of the afternoon. With the light fading, Magpies centre Willie Peace drew in two defenders before managing to offload to Collins who gathered the ball to score.
As the clock wound down, Yass tried desperately to score, but a big hit from Freeman-Quay ensured the ball came loose to give the Warriors the win.

GUNGAHLIN BULLS 20
(Tries: K Madden, D Cooper-Shields, N Mead, T Sheard; Goals: D Williams 2) Man of the Match: Tori Freeman-Quay The Queanbeyan Kangaroos created breathing space between themselves and the third placed Yass Magpies thanks to a 58-20 win over the Gungahlin Bulls.
Cleveland McGhie scored two tries for the afternoon including the try to give the Rams the lead for the first time in the game when he caught a cross-field kick from Jayden Carroll.
Sitting second last on the ladder, the Bulls were likely to struggle against the Roos but threatened to cause an upset as they raced to a 10-6 lead early in the first half.
Kebjarvei Vaetoe scored the final try of the afternoon as he stepped through Belconnen’s defensive line after Tino Sione had been sent to the bin.
Boosted by the return of star playmaker Brent Crisp, the Kangaroos wrestled back the momentum as they ended up scoring ten tries with Crisp converting nine of them. Former Gungahlin skipper Josh Ayers and current Canberra Raiders U20s halfback Logan Spaander were amongst the try scorers for the Roos as the duo both scored three tries each. Woden Valley Rams 32 (Tries: C McGhie 2, M Gilmour, J Taws, K Vaetoe; Goals: J Carroll 6) d Belconnen United Sharks 18 (Tries: D Eason, D Denny, T Sione; Goals: D Eason 3) A second half comeback from the Woden Valley Rams was enough to see of the Sharks and keep their finals hopes alive. The last placed Sharks started the match strongly and raced to an 18-0 lead within the opening 20 minutes. However, two sin binnings and a late sending off for the Sharks and a spirited second half from the Rams turned the match around.
The win sees Woden move up to sixth, three points behind the fourth-placed Bushrangers. The Queanbeyan Blues continued their good season with a 46 -24 over the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs. Having scored three tries in the opening 12 minutes, it appeared like it would be a long day for the Bulldogs, but to their credit, Goulburn dug deep to create an intriguing contest. Blake Hewitt scored a try under bizarre circumstances when Goulburn kickoff struck the goalpost before bouncing into the arms of Hewitt who scored. From that moment, the Blues and Bulldogs scored try for try as the Blues ended up claiming a 22 point win. The loss sees Goulburn drop to seventh on the ladder, three points behind the fourth-placed Bushrangers.
AUSTBROKERS CANBERRA CRC ROUND 14 PREVIEW By Ricky Kelly
QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS V GOULBURN WORKERS BULLDOGS 3:00PM SATURDAY AT SEEARS WORKWEAR OVAL, LIVE STREAM The second place Queanbeyan Kangaroos will play in front of a home crowd this weekend when they take on the 7th place Goulburn Workers Bulldogs. The Kangaroos have been superb this year only losing 2 from 10 matches as they are coming off a 38 point victory over Gungahlin. The Bulldogs
however have struggled to find form as they recently came off a 22 point loss to the Blues at home. The Bulldogs will be very eager to get the win this Saturday as a win could put them one point behind 4th place depending on how other results unfold.
TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS V YASS MAGPIES 2:15PM SATURDAY AT GREENWAY ENCLOSED OVAL A massive opening game to start off round 14 as the Bushrangers will take on Yass in a 3rd v 4th clash in Tuggeranong on Saturday afternoon. Both teams will be looking to cement their spot in the top four with a win on the weekend as Tuggeranong will be returning fresh off a bye, whilst the Magpies are coming off a close two point home loss to West Belconnen. Bushrangers Coach Justin Giteau believes that Bushrangers aren’t focused on their ladder position, rather going out and focusing on each week as it comes.
“I couldn’t tell you how far out we are, I’m just focused on going week to week at this stage and we aren’t in a position to think further ahead because when we do we don’t play very well”, he said. A strong win for the Bushrangers would see them jump the Magpies into third place depending on points differential whilst a loss could see them fall as low as fifth.
GUNGAHLIN BULLS V BELCONNEN UNITED SHARKS 3:00PM SATURDAY AT NICHOLLS – INTERNATIONAL 1 The eighth placed Gungahlin Bulls will play the ninth place Belconnen United Sharks this Saturday at Nicholls oval where both teams will be looking to play for pride. The Sharks are sitting 4 points adrift at the bottom of the table and a win would move them within 2 point from the Bulls. Gungahlin Bulls coach David Howell says that injuries have not helped his side during their recent tough spell of matches.
“At the moment we are missing some front rowers and a few more injuries on the weekend which will hurt us this week, we are just missing a bit of leadership as some of our experienced players have been out injured,” he said. The battle for the spoon could well be over if the Sharks can’t this one out, so there will be plenty of pride to play for at Nicholls on Saturday afternoon.
WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS V WODEN VALLEY RAMS 3:00PM SATURDAY AT RAIDERS BELCONNEN A massive game for both these two teams as the 5th placed West Belconnen Warriors will take on the 6th placed Woden Valley rams at Raiders Belconnen on Saturday as both teams will be looking to push for a finals spot. The Warriors are coming off a strong 2 point win over the Magpies in Yass and the Rams are full of confidence after a strong 14 point win over the sharks in Woden last round. Warriors coach Troy Thompson believes that work is still needed to be done around the basics coming into the match but also has praised his side’s defence.
“Still there is an issue with us is holding the Football as our completion rate was below 60% (against Yass), but probably the highlight for us was our defence, the game was wet and played through the middle but we showed some good energy in defence which was good.”, he said. Thompson is also wary of a Rams team that is desperate to get the win as they are full of confidence coming over a strong comeback win. “They will be desperate (Rams) and I know they had a really good win last week, they were down by 18 points and came back to get a good win, so that shows the character of the Rams”, he said.
CRC MATCH REPORT: WARRIORS TITLE DEFENCE ALIVE WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS 12 Tries: C Scott, T Freeman-Quay; Goals: R Roberts 2
YASS MAGPIES 10
Tries: J Collins 2; Goals: S Davis Man of the Match: Tori Freeman-Quay The West Belconnen Warriors have kept their title defence alive with a narrow 12-10 win over the Yass Magpies at Walker Park on Saturday afternoon. A late try to Tori Freeman-Quay secured the result for the Warriors as they snatched the two competition points with a spirited performance in miserable conditions. Yass opened the scoring early in the second half when five-eighth Steve Naughton decided to run the ball from 30 metres out on the last tackle. Having caught the Warriors defence off guard, Naughton initially escaped the Warriors defenders before offloading the ball which was subsequently kicked into the in goal for Yass winger, Jesse Collins. The Magpies almost had a second try when Jai Smith sprinted down the touchline but West Belconnen five-eighth Bobby Roberts bundled him out of touch A tense period of play followed where neither team looked likely to score but the Warriors slowly grabbed the ascendency. Sam Finnegan darted from dummy-half to get over the line but couldn’t ground the ball However, Cameron Scott scored in the left corner on the verge of halftime to send the teams into the shed with scores locked at 6-6.
Jesse Collins gave Yass the lead midway through the second half with his second try of the afternoon. With the light fading, Magpies centre Willie Peace drew in two defenders before managing to offload to Collins who gathered the ball to score. Shaun Davis missed the conversion from the touchline meaning that the Magpies held only a four point lead. With momentum firmly in Yass’ favour, Peace ran close to the tryline but three Warriors defenders managed to bundle him into touch. Brilliance from West Belconnen captain Ryan McQueen leveled the scores as the halfback troubled the Yass defence before passing to Tori Freeman-Quay who scored. With only ten minutes left in the match, Bobby Roberts slotted the conversion to give the Warriors a two point lead. As the clock wound down, Yass tried desperately to score but a big hit from FreemanQuay ensured the ball came loose to give the Warriors the win.
OWT MATCH REPORT: DRAGONS ANNOUNCE THEMSELVES AS PREMIERSHIP CONTENDERS The Valley Dragons have announced themselves as premiership contenders with a fiercely fought 18-12 win over the Yass Magpies at Raiders Belconnen on Friday night.
The Dragons continued to pile the pressure on the Magpies and were helped by poor Yass’ poor discipline as they gave away plenty of penalties.
“We worked as a team and that pushed us to get that 18-0 lead,” said Dragons captain Nirada Phonsaya. “However, our penalties let us down and that’s how they scored.”
Dragons halfback Chloe Smith made the pressure count when her grubber towards the in goal took a wild deflection off a Yass player. Smith pounced onto the loose ball to give the Dragons an 18-0 lead ten minutes from halftime.
Having entered the clash on the back of a three-match winning streak, a strong first half gave the Valley Dragons control before the Magpies mounted a late comeback to ensure a grandstand finish.
Yass then kicked into gear and started piling pressure on the Dragons but couldn’t find a chink in their armour before the break.
Although the comeback was ultimately unsuccessful, Yass’ Taylah Frost was proud of her team’s effort.
The second half was a different story as Yass showed patches of the form that saw them win their opening four games.
“I think the other girls have a really good team,” Frost said. “For us to push through and hold together as a team, we did really well.”
With both teams losing players to injury, Shannon Wright scored in the right corner after the Magpies moved the ball from left to right.
The Valley Dragons opened the scoring early after Dorothy Carroll drew in the Magpies winger before passing to Jade Lee who scored in the corner.
As the game progressed, the Dragons gave away repeated penalties and Maddison Douven made them pay with a quick tap to score and set up a grandstand finish.
Alannah Fraser added a second try shortly afterwards when the Dragons moved the ball from left to right. With the Yass defence sliding, Fraser straightened up and ran through a subsequent hole cross the try line.
However, the Dragons managed to hold on to claim the win to remain third on the ladder.
WODEN RE-SIGN HEAD COACH ASH BARNES
The Woden Valley Rams announced they have extended the contract of Head Coach Ash Barnes for two years. Having come through the coaching ranks at the Rams, Barnes has been in his current role for three seasons. Rams President Steve Hicks said he was delighted with the deal. “With a young squad, Ash’s ability to relate to them and develop them is really integral for us,” Hicks said. “We don’t have a lot of money to spend on buying players so we need to develop our own and I think Ash is the perfect person to do that. Barnes, who also coached the Monaro U23’s side to the Country Championships earlier this year, was pleased to be staying at Woden.
“It’s exciting,” Barnes said. “I really love the club and the players involved. “The reason why I am so keen to stay on is the players and the potential that I see in them. They are very willing to learn which makes them easy to teach. “Over the last couple of years, we’ve come forward in leaps and bounds, and obviously we’re not where we want to be, in semifinal football and the top four yet, but I do see that coming for us.” With four rounds left of the regular season, Woden currently sit in sixth place on the ladder, three points behind fourth place.
