‘!e !in Ice’ RAIHAN ADZKIA
! To complete this unit, we had to create a music video on a song that we chose from the movie, “The wall”. I worked with Sasky, Bianca and chose to do the first song from the wall, “The Thin ice”. The story of the music video is about a girl who had a beautiful and peaceful childhood because her mommy , daddy and everyone loves her, and take care of her like nothing can go wrong. However, little did she knows whats coming to her, when she is stepping into a new life.
The video begins with a really bright light shining from the top, which we shot it from below and zoom it to the focal point of the light. The angle and how we shot it , creates a really nice effect to use in the beginning of the video.The light is often used to symbolize a brightness, a new life and hope. We chose this image as the beginning of the movie, to give the ideas of how bright is a new life when weʼre just born. In the video, this image of light also symbolizes a clear goal of our life. When weʼre a kid, we all have goals to achieve in the future and we often think everything looks beautiful, easy and peaceful, however little did we know whats coming to us. ! In the following image, a babyʼs body emerged in between the zooming to the focal point of the light. The technique that we used is the panning shot, we slowly move the camera, started from the right to the left, this was used to show the wholeʼs body of the baby. The baby relates to a lyric ʻbaby blueʼ, this was used to symbolize ʻan innocenceʼ. Specifically, it also means an early stages of life where people have no insecurities. We decided to choose this image to show how lovely when a baby just born, a mommy loves you, daddy loves you, everybody loves you, and take care of you like nothing can go wrong. This image is chosen to tell you that when weʼre child, everything is always going to be just alright, since we have a lot of people who loves us. In a real life, a baby usually are really good a bringing families together. However, unbeknownst to them whatʼs coming to them when the baby grows.
The presence of a flower, grass, and tree swaying in the wind, in the video is another image of showing how beautiful, peaceful,and easy our life when weʼre a child and yet life was so short. The angle that we used to shoot the flower and the grass, is a low angle. We used this angle to show the background of the sky which gives the happiness look more. This shot also makes the flower and the other subject seem powerful and dominant. This creates a really a beautiful effect, since they swayed in the breeze. Additionally, we also used the panning and another low angle for the tree. We started to shoot from the branch, crown, and leaves of the tree and slowly pan to the right and ended it to the sky. The sun light behind the tree supported the image, to give the happiness look more obvious. We chose these images, again to show how peaceful, beautiful and easy the world is when weʼre a child. We think this kind of shot is works well, because panning shot scans the scene horizontally which shows the idea the ʻthe worldʼ more ! The presence of the puddle in the movie is used to show the reflection of the beautiful world. We also used the idea of a foot emerged in a sudden, and stepped on the puddle (reflection). We chose this image to show that the baby grew up, the girl has grown up and she is now stepping into a new life.
At the moment, she is not a baby nor a kid anymore, she is now a young lady who just stepped into her new life.!
In the movie, the young lady with a flower appears in a sudden. The idea of her holding the flower is used to symbolize hope and happiness. We chose this to show the girl stepping a new life. As she stepped into her new life, the idea of flower (happiness and love) is always there to accompany her. However, little did she know whatʼs coming into her. It is also means, she hopes that her new life would be the same as when she was a child. The idea of the stairs is also used to show that the girl slowly take steps of life towards adulthood. This whole scene again, gives the idea transitioning from the childhood towards adulthood. ! In this scene, We used over the shoulder shot for the first image, which we framed from behind the girlʼs back who is looking at the subject (mirror). This shot helps to set up the position of the mirror reflection, and get the feel of looking at one person from the other point of view. The shadows is planned to be there, to give a nice and dramatic reflection effect. ! In a real life, when we were a child, we always think, to be an adult is the best thing in life because its where you could try and do new things in life which you canʼt find it in childhood . Yet, we didnʼt know howʼs life actually look like when we entered this stage. When we are in adult life, life would be so much harder, because we have to setting ourself up in favorable circumstances, we have to find jobs to get money, we have to find a woman/ man to marry, and our life would full of hassles, deadlines, frustrations, and demands. We would also feel more stressful, and encounter with more pressures.
Just as soon as the baby scenes, transitioning, and those beautiful scenes finished, the rhythm of the song started to change. The lyrics itself is also changed, it is not smooth and speak of hope and dreams anymore, at this moment the unharmonious and harsh voice appeared. The image of the ballerina that we chose, is symbolized as a form of art in society that expresses their feelings of not being understood by the society through movement and art. Now, she knows that life is different, it is full of pain. The presence of the bathroom is to show an isolated setting. It is chosen to show an entrance to a world of loneliness. Which also means, that the girl is now entering the real life, where she finds out society is cruel, which creates a loneliness and alienation. The bathroom is planned to be dark, to give the idea of a darkness which is symbolized the idea of evil, ignorance, and danger. The idea of the flower falls from her hand also used to symbolize that there is no happiness anymore, and this is not what like she expected in her childhood. To sum up, the whole scene shows as you enter this stage life is painful, and its getting more complicated. ! In one of those harsh sentences in the lyrics, the singer is often speaks about ʻthe thin iceʼ which is what the title is. This creates the comparison between the modern life to thin ice. ʻThe thin iceʼ is often used to present a fragile, and easily broken, which also describes how very fragile living really is.
! In the following scene, the wall and a car image is often appears. The whole of carʼs moving with the reflection of the wall is used to show just go for it, continue skating your life. The wall is used to symbolize the barrier or the block against the society to help her continue skating her life. This images then describes if she just walk and continue the modern life in denial and pretend nothing is wrong with, think that everything is perfect and ignoring all of the people around her who have to deal with tragedy. However, donʼt be surprised when one day she didnʼt realized that she just ignore so many problems that she pile up. This whole scene is supports and match with the lyric it self “if you should go skating on the thin ice of modern life”, “dont be surprised when a crack in the ice appears under your feet”. The idea of the barrier is used to support the lyrics “dragging behind you the silent reproach of a million tear stained eyes”, which to show describes you, donʼt ever take other peopleʼs problems with you in your life, because there burden will crack the thin ice you are on. For this scene, we used the panning and medium shot. The panning shot is used to the the wall ‘bricks’
image. Although the bricks it self is not moving , but we still referred this as a panning shot, since we moved ourself , following the object until where it ends.The medium shot is used to shoot another brick where we used our car to move ourself, and finally creates a really nice tracking shots.
The presence of the broken glass, the drowning, and the typography in the movie is chosen to show the idea of the modern life actually kills. The thin ice is now broke, and the girl is now falling through the ice. The idea of these images, means; after she continuing her life with the barrier that she used, she is now slipping out of the perfect little reality that she have created and finally have to deal with all problems ! We created a typography image where we used the idea of water droplets in vapour. This bring the image more dramatic and realistic, which also supports the idea of how bad her life really is.
In the following scene, you see a scarf. We used the scarf which have flower patterns on it, again the whole idea of the scarf with flower is to show 驶the happiness始. However, the presence of the scarf in the water with the young lady drowning, is used to show the hardships of life,staring at her, swallowing her life, and make her struggle more; No more happiness, beautiful and easy life. The banging part is planned to show that she needs help to overcome with all of her problems, however no one there for her. ! The movie then ends with the light, which is the flashback and the foreshadow of her childhood where life is beautiful, easy and peaceful. She is now wanting to go back to her childhood, yet she can始t because life goes on.
