The pilot dredging project in Arrowhead Cove was successfully completed in January 2024. The process has been a long-time coming, both with securing the funds and permitting requirements for a project of this size. The actual dredging of the cove began in the fall of 2023 with the installation of coffer dams, isolating a three acre section of the cove to remove 11,000 cy of sediment. Local company Byco Enterprises was awarded the

bid and completed the dredging project early in 2024. After water was removed from the sediment, the sediment was then hauled to the Garrett County Landfill. Now that the sediment removal has been completed, the lakebed is ready for restoration of habitat and subaquatic vegetation planting.

As this was a pilot project, with full government funding, the next steps for county government and involved parties is to further evaluate

It’s not every day you find a bear den under the deck! A female black bear spent her winter hibernating under the porch at Railey Vacations, where she gave birth to four cubs in January. The den was discovered in late winter when Railey Vacations employees began remodeling the deck. After noticing the cubs, they contacted Maryland Department of Natural Resources officers for next steps. DNR officers developed a game plan to keep everyone safe, including the bears, and were able to safely tranquilize the sow without incident. Each bear cub was

then removed from the den by DNR officers. As there’s no risk of rejection for the cubs after human contact, employees at the local businesses were able to safely handle the cubs – truly a once in a lifetime experience! DNR officials supervised and monitored the cubs during this time. The bears were relocated to an empty den on state land where they can thrive in the wild away from human interaction and traffic. Bears should never be approached in the wild, especially bear cubs, and no baby animal should be disturbed or moved by a civilian. This was a controlled and

The Deep Creek Lake Resort Report

RaIlEy REalTy cElEBRaTES 50 yEaRS IN BUSINESS

The Railey name has been synonymous with Deep Creek Lake since the lake’s founding in 1925. C.M. Railey helped log what is now the lakebed and opened the first lakeside park, rented the first cottages to vacationers, and operated a general store and tavern. Since then, the Railey family has made the visitors of Deep Creek Lake their legacy. After decades of successfully renting cottages, James and Violet ‘Sis’ Railey decided to offer their knowledge of the area to those looking to purchase a primary or secondary residence. Railey Realty was founded shortly after in 1974.

Originally operating from their home on Lake Shore, the Raileys opened their first official office on what is now Rt. 219. Railey Realty

soon outgrew their location and broke ground on the current office further down the road in the early 90s. Fifty years later, Railey Realty still stands true to the original principles on which it was founded.

To celebrate this milestone, the Garrett County Commissioners issued Railey Realty a commendation for 50 years in business. More than just the recognition of years in business, though, each commissioner commended Railey Realty and its agents for being involved in the community. From supporting youth sports to nonprofits to community developments, Railey Realty strives to give back to the community in as many ways as possible. The agents and staff at Railey Realty serve on dozens of committees, boards, and
