Shortlist SME Growth in Rail One Big Circle: One Big Circle, founded in 2017, has made rapid growth in the rail industry in the last 12 months despite having no previous experience in rail. Using expertise in digital video and integration they developed their AIVR product for rapid video data capture from operational trains. Within nine months of proof-of-concept AIVR was deployed operationally with Network Rail and Transport for Wales, enabling staff and stakeholders to rapidly access up-to-date trackside footage online, automatically captured from trains. The AIVR system allows users to easily see what they need to see - to manage off-track and asset conditions, increase safety, save time, reduce costs and significantly reduce boots on ballast. In addition, One Big Circle’s video and integration skills have been contracted by newly formed relationships with NR, BAE and the Manufacturing Technology Centre to deliver innovative solutions to rail challenges. This includes using Machine Learning to automatically detect hotspots on the conductor rail and detect unusual behaviour at stations. The success of One Big Circle is testament to both their determination and agility as an SME and the benefits of working collaboratively with industry innovators, ensuring we help them meet their challenges.

Shortlist Motion Rail Motion Rail was established by Emma Dymond, a competent and respected engineer and mother, in 2009. Progressing the business and securing work as Motion rather than a ‘one-woman band’ was a challenge. Ensuring Motion was self-sufficient as opposed to borrowing funds, Emma invested in people to grow the business. Employing and developing like-minded individuals and trainees on-site and in the boardroom, Motion has supported personal and professional development, several high-profile projects and delivered the largest circuit immunisation programme on Network Rail infrastructure. People-focused and recognising the power of gaming technology, Motion created the first virtual reality railway to provide workforce training using gamification. Realising the benefits and supporting the ‘Bossing the Crossing’ and ‘You vs Train’ campaigns, Motion collaborated with Network Rail and British Transport Police to take the railway to the classroom. This led to the creation of Motion Reality, a not-for-profit entity that has helped educate more than 300,000 youngsters about railway safety. Putting people first, Motion has grown from one female engineer to employing a workforce of up to 55 and is recognised as an ethical, trusted and technically competent partner of choice – which gives back to the community.

#RISEAwards20 Atkins Neurodiversity Network Not all great minds think alike. Adults with neurodiverse conditions are renowned for cognitive pattern recognition, outsidethe-box thinking, attention to detail, logical and methodical thinking, focus and integrity attributes. But often those with such conditions, including autism, dyslexia and dyspraxia, go undiagnosed or choose not to disclose for fear of being judged or unable to secure employment. Atkins has recognised that neurodiversity is an important part of the equality, diversity & inclusion (EDI) mix and is transforming their environment and working processes to level the playing field for all neurodiverse types. A programme of education, support, and open conversation is allowing existing neurodiverse staff to excel as well as breaking the barriers for future generations. Guaranteeing interviews, providing reasonable adjustments to accommodate neurodiverse candidates and offering work placements to those with hidden conditions, Atkins are leading the way in ensuring neurodiverse talent are not unintentionally excluded and that resources are being drawn from diverse pools, enabling individuals to thrive and cultivate high-performing teams.

Shortlist CPMS Diversity Ally Initiative CPMS is truly committed to the ED&I agenda and has been very successful in its focused ED&I approach. It boasts a 49% female workforce, an 18% BAME and a 20% LGBTQ+ representation and, for the last 5 years, a 96% staff retention rate. In February 2020, CPMS was quick to identify that some of the immediate obstacles faced during the pandemic were critical ED&I challenges. As problem-solving hinges on how employees connect to their company culture and their feelings of belonging in the organisation, CPMS broadened its ED&I work and, through its dedicated ED&I team, launched a new initiative, Diversity Ally. Diversity Ally offers a structured platform to have the conversation on the 9 protected characteristics of the Equality Act, encouraging open and honest discussion on diversity issues and focussing the mind of employees on matters relevant to business performance. Through Diversity Ally, CPMS has captured the new challenges of efficiently working amid a pandemic, safeguard social cohesion and the continuous physical and mental health of its employees. The initiative has been hugely successful, with employees commenting that it has broadened their understanding of some of the struggles faced by staff members from the BAME and LGBTQ+ Community (among others) and renewed their commitment to the CPMS’ ED&I agenda. CPMS Diversity Ally initiative led by CPMS ED&I team encourages employees to self-reflect on their understanding and commitment to ED&I by reference to a Diversity Ally Spectrum and to take pro-active steps to promote ED&I within CPMS, thus moving up the Spectrum to the position of Super Ally (and securing the highly coveted “Super Ally” badge). 22 Headfort Place, London SW1X 7RY +44 (0)20 7201 0777

RISE Awards 2020 4 November 2020
#RISEAwards20 Safety and Wellbeing Atkins With a number of tasks still requiring rail workers to be on-track, there were 486 workforce near misses reported in the first year of CP6 alone. Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) survey data is a key requirement for major projects, renewal and maintenance activities across the rail network. Traditionally, collating survey data would be carried out manually by a team walking the track, creating considerable workforce safety risks including accidents, fatigue, impacting mental health as well as being time-consuming and inefficient. Using the New Measurement Train infrastructure, Atkins are collaborating with Network Rail’s North West and Central South route team and Network Rail’s Accelerated Innovation team as part of the Central Rail Systems Alliance (CRSA) and newly established SME Train Rail Infrastructure Solutions to develop the OLE Static Analysis Tool (OLE-StAT) to carry out surveys remotely, creating significant workforce safety benefits: • Mitigates the need for workers to walk the track • Reduces the risk of workforce fatigue and relatable incidents including road traffic accidents • Reduces the risk of slips, trips and falls accidents • Facilitates planned maintenance reducing the pressure of emergency trackside working Initial predictions suggest OLE-StAT has the potential to reduce the on-track hours by circa 2000 annually for the Central Rail Systems Alliance and is being developed to support proactive maintenance planning and fault-finding to realise further safety and efficiency benefits across the rail network. OLE-StAT will support NR achieve the target to reduce workforce near misses by 50% by removing the need to walk the track to carry out OLE surveys. 22 Headfort Place, London SW1X 7RY +44 (0)20 7201 0777

Shortlist Balfour Beatty The £51m Angerstein and Hither Green Signalling Renewals project follows the successful delivery of the Key Output 2 (KO2) package of the Thameslink programme. It commenced in September 2017 with Balfour Beatty acting as the Principal Contractor. The scope was to renew the life-expired signalling equipment and associated assets within the Network Rail Kent Route, covering approximately 18km of track and trackside equipment, and 1128m of lineside route works. Balfour Beatty recognised the challenges of working in this environment through extensive lessons learned on KO2 and developed their safety strategy to enable safe and successful project delivery. By working with the public to ensure their safety by applying the same principles from KO2, employees maintain a safety critical approach regarding their own and the public’s safety to achieve Zero Harm. Their key responsibility was to manage the safety of everyone onsite during delivery and to handback a high quality and safe railway to Network Rail; and recognised a clear opportunity to apply lessons learned from the previous KO2. The aim is to send everyone home safe every day, and to date, Balfour Beatty has delivered all works at Hither Green and Angerstein without injury at any point. The Angerstein Signalling Renewals project was successfully commissioned in April 2019, on time, to budget and with zero LTIR and AFR.

Shortlist Motion Rail Emma Dymond, Founder of Motion Rail, recognised the power of gaming technology and created the first ever virtual reality (VR) railway to support workforce training using gamification. Around the same time, Network Rail launched the ‘Bossing the Crossing’ campaign, which raises awareness of level crossings. Due to risks involved with taking school groups to a level crossing to educate them of the dangers, Emma drew on the impact of the VR railway to take a virtual railway to the classroom to engage and educate young people.
In collaboration with Network Rail and British Transport Police, Motion Reality was taken to the classroom to educate youngsters about the dangers of the railway. Used in many mainstream and special needs schools, behavioural pupil units and STEM-based events including The Big Bang fairs, Motion Reality has been experienced by more than 300,000 youngsters since 2018. Motion Reality creates user engagement in a way that was not previously possible. It brings the railway to life in a safe, simulated environment, delivering immersive training that engages and educates all, showing that the railway is not a place to play.

#RISEAwards20 Thales The thermal camera installation project team swung swiftly into action in challenging conditions to support one of our key partners, Network Rail, by implementing an innovative solution for protecting their critical workers during the Covid-19 crisis. The team successfully trialled and installed cameras in Network Rail’s offices nationwide, which can detect higher than normal temperatures of staff arriving for work, mitigating the risk of COVID-19 spreading in the workplace. This has made a critical contribution to ensuring that Network Rail’s workforce can keep the country’s rail network moving safely during the pandemic. Any initial teething problems were anticipated and included on the project risk register, and action was taken rapidly to address these. For example; the initial requirement was for cameras to be mounted upon tripods to enable quick installation and flexibility. This made the units prone to being moved, which affected calibration accuracy. Over two thirds of the camera systems were, therefore, rapidly converted to a fixed installation method. The system has proven itself and has played a key role in managing the risk of infection being brought into operationally critical facilities. Staff at the key rail locations have welcomed the technology to the extent that Network Rail is now expanding the deployment of the solution to their wider facilities estate.

#RISEAwards20 Siemens Mobility – Assisting GTR with safe social distancing on trains Assisting with safe social distancing in line with Government COVID-19 guidance, Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) is now using innovative technology from Siemens Mobility to monitor the number of passengers on its Class 700 Thameslink and Class 717 Great Northern Moorgate trains. The Advanced Passenger Loading (APL) solution uses data based on weight to monitor passenger loads, supporting service operation and timetable planning by highlighting the busiest services. By helping GTR to monitor social distancing using up to the minute data, this innovative technology is playing a crucial role in keeping passengers safe. This is the first-ever example of an application being built on this innovative data generated by the train IT (SIBAS PN) and is thought to be the most advanced and innovative solution of its kind in the UK. GTR has utilised the app to schedule additional services week-by-week basis. A newly added feature also identifies the number of people on each carriage, allowing GTR to make announcements asking people to spread along the train. These two features combined have helped GTR enhance social distancing and is believed to have played at least some part in preventing the spread of the disease.

Shortlist Siemens Mobility & Porterbrook (West Midlands Trains, GB Railfreight) As the Covid-19 pandemic hit the UK, the nation’s hospitals were being stretched to the limit, requiring urgent medical supplies to be delivered efficiently. With the Nightingale Hospital programme also opening new facilities across the UK, supply and logistics operations were being similarly stretched. Following a request for support by the DfT, a collaboration between train owner, Porterbrook, train operators West Midlands Trains (WMT) and GB Railfreight (GBRf), and train manufacturer and maintainer Siemens Mobility, came together and in a matter of days successfully trialled a new medical supplies delivery operation into London. Fortunately, it wasn’t necessary for the units to be used and once the Nightingale Hospitals were closed, the Class 319s were stood down pending readiness for recall, or service return. However, the ability and willingness to re-group remains if a second wave occurs. During a time of national crisis, the programme proved the strength of the UK supply chain, demonstrating the power of rail industry collaboration and the commitment, determination and ability of all the teams involved to deliver a solution to support a critical healthcare challenge.
