Caroline Attan Caroline Attan’s works are characterised by generic circular grids that underpin folded paper forms, creating geometric and rotating compositions. The titles are suggestive of a very personal response to the content of the poems that inspire her and particular moments in time. Her circular compositions are infinite, with no apparent beginning or end. For the text based works, the poetry is hand-written within a grid, allowing some words to be read whilst others are hidden by the three dimensional pattern created by the folded paper forms. The narrative is fragmented as she inscribes extracts from Latin American poetry in Spanish and English, within the circular grid beneath the folded forms.
The poetry of Pablo Neruda is a particular influence on Attan’s work. Neruda’s explorations of conflicting emotions of desire, humour, anger, frustration and affection are translated into intricate combinations of text and delicately folded coloured paper. The infinite combinations of pattern and colour created by folded paper forms become Attan’s personal language through which she seeks to interpret the sentiments and ideas conveyed in the written narratives that inspire her. Folded coloured forms are in opposition and defiance of written language, as colour is an intrinsic abstraction. Some pictures vibrate with urgency; others harmonise and clash – suggestions of the Peruvian culture that inspires her. Background and foreground, light and dark, large and small, the revealed and the concealed are all oppositional elements that come together in Attan’s work to form calming and mesmerising compositions. Intricately constructed pictures are created through a certain personal rigour, connection and discipline using very specific methods. Other pictures use printed folded paper from magazines and reference the commercial world, whilst maintaining fluidity through circular movements. Attan’s Noche series comprises monochrome works, created using dark coloured card using regular folded components. Texture, movement and the suggestion of colour in darkness reference Malevich's black square, developing through darkness into brilliant colour.
