Railings Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of work by artist Hormazd Narielwalla. Born in Pune in India in 1979, Hormazd Narielwalla’s career as an artist began after his studies in fashion and textile design led him to a residency in the atelier of Dege & Skinner, London’s oldest tailoring firm on Savile Row. His fascination with tailoring patterns began during this period and led to the publication of two books, Dead Man’s Patterns and The Savile Row Cutter, a biography of Master Tailor, Michael Skinner. Narielwalla works in mixed media and collage using found materials; vintage sewing patterns, bespoke Savile Row tailoring patterns and hand-made papers sourced from around the world. The patterns themselves range from rare, vintage patterns sourced from specialist dealers through to contemporary Savile Row suit patterns. Narielwalla’s collages propose a new interpretation of these tailoring and sewing patterns as intriguing, abstracted drawings of the human form. Freed from function, they are drawings ahead of their time, anthropomorphic in origin and beautifully abstract in isolation. This exhibition features a series of works created from patterns first published in the French fashion magazine, Le Petit Echo de La Mode, which was published between 1879 and 1983. Alongside the abstract works, the exhibition feature eight figurative collages inspired by Narielwalla’s love of the artist, Frida Kahlo. Narielwalla is known for his quirky and imaginative, figurative illustrations inspired by iconic figures from the art and fashion world. He was recently commissioned by the V&A to create a piece, Forest Queen, for publication as an exclusive limited edition to accompany their exhibition Frida Kahlo: Making Herself Up, which runs until 4th November. Since Narielwalla’s first solo show, sponsored and exhibited by Sir Paul Smith in 2009, he has exhibited regularly in London and has shown work in Melbourne, Stockholm, Athens, New York and New Delhi. His work features in Private and Corporate collections worldwide.
