Undoubtedly the world’s greatest railway journey, the Trans-Siberian Railway runs like a steel ribbon across mysterious Russia, connecting east and west from Moscow over the Urals, across the magnificent and endless steppe and alongside the shore of the world’s largest freshwater lake. Opened in stages between 1891 and 1916, this extraordinary engineering achievement is a vital link for all the communities that live in close proximity to the line – and to travel along this route is by far the best way to experience the vastness and grandeur of Russia’s rarely visited interior. The official length of the Trans-Siberian line between Moscow and Vladivostok is 9,288 kilometres, making it the longest single-service railway in the world. As part of the itinerary the train travels along the branch line at Lake Baikal and away from the main Trans-Siberian line, heading into Mongolia and its capital Ulaan Baatar. The classic Trans-Siberian Express tours on board the Golden Eagle between Moscow and Vladivostok take a leisurely two weeks. By the time the journey ends you will have passed through eight time zones, and travelled an incredible distance of 11,000 kilometres through Russia and Mongolia. For a fuller insight into Mongolia, why not experience the Naadam Festival with the Trans-Mongolian journey across Russia on board the Golden Eagle combined with a visit to the Mongolian national festival. Naadam is the one and only Big Event in Mongolia, a spectacularly colourful national festival, held every year. Naadam literally means ‘three manly games’. Known as the world’s second oldest Olympics, it celebrates what defined civilisation in the Steppes eight centuries ago: archery, wrestling and horse-riding. The journey follows the Trans-Siberian from Moscow to Lake Baikal before diverting along the branch line and heading into Mongolia and its capital Ulaan Baatar. On the first day of the Naadam Festival, witness the elaborate opening ceremony which consists of local dancers, athletes, horse riders and musicians, before travelling outside Ulaan Baatar to watch the national horse race. In the evening enjoy a performance of traditional Mongolian throat singing and contortionists. The second day of the festival is for all the main competitions and you will attend the archery, wrestling and ankle-bone shooting events. This is a unique opportunity to be among the few nonMongolians to experience the spectacular, but little known, Naadam Festival and soak up the exciting atmosphere of the national holiday. Includes: 11 nights on board the Golden Eagle, one night accommodation in Moscow, welcome and farewell dinners, all meals whilst on board, selection of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages served with meals, complimentary tea, coffee and mineral water 24 hours a day, guided off-train sightseeing including Freedom of Choice Touring Options, services of a cabin attendant at all times, arrival and departure transfers, all gratuities. Retracing one of the most important trading routes of ancient civilisation, the Silk Road follows in the footsteps of such legendary figures as Alexander the Great and Marco Polo. For centuries, merchants and adventurers journeyed to and from China on ancient routes through some of the most testing landscapes in the world, trading silk, spices and perfumes. These ‘highways’ – stretching some 6,400 kilometres – collectively came to be called the Silk Road. Crossing both Russia and China as well as some of the remotest former Soviet Republics, this epic journey on board the Golden Eagle through Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan and the Shangri-La Express from the Kazakh border to Beijing across the Gobi Desert and through an ever changing landscape, will take in some of the most magnificent yet little visited sites and cities from the ancient world. Travel a total of 11,000 kilometres across five countries and six time zones, through areas only accessible by train. Whilst the journey may present great difficulties for the independent traveller, this tour provides the opportunity to travel in comfort and safety. A feeling of adventure and pioneering awaits on this unique 21-day tour by private train. Includes: Ten nights on board the Golden Eagle, five nights on board the ShangriLa Express, two nights accommodation in Moscow, three nights accommodation in Beijing, welcome and farewell dinners, all meals whilst on board, selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages served with meals, complimentary tea, coffee and mineral water 24 hours a day, guided off-train sightseeing including Freedom of Choice Touring Options, services of a cabin attendant at all times, arrival and departure transfers, all gratuities.

YOUR TRAVEL OPTIONS Tickets and Passes Travelling by rail provides you with so many choices; ticket or pass, first class or second, direct high-speed service or a longer scenic journey or an overnight service? Here’s some information to help you decide what best suits your travel plans.

Passes are a fantastic option as in most cases they allow unlimited travel, within a nominated validity, on the national rail networks of your chosen region. However, if your travel will take you to just a couple of cities, then sector tickets may be the best option.

Travel Classes

Most trains offer two types of service - First and Second Class. First Class is quieter and roomier, offering fewer and more spacious seats than Second Class. First Class also offers more luggage space and on some journeys may even include a meal. Second Class travel offers good value for money.

Seating Configurations

Compartment: A cabin which opens to a corridor on one side of the car. In First Class, compartments seat six passengers and eight in Second Class. Coach: An open plan car which has a centre aisle. In First Class there are two seats on one side and one seat on the other. In Second Class there are two seats on either side of the aisle.

Overnight Trains

High-speed Trains

The stars of the rail network combine high-speed travel between major cities with unmatched service and comfort. Reservations are generally required - supplements and/or reservation fees will apply for pass holders. Refer to pages 21-23 for more details on high speed trains.

Scenic Trains

Trains often travel through areas inaccessible by cars, so you can be assured of seeing some of the most spectacular and untouched landscapes. A meandering journey through dramatic mountain landscapes or beside picturesque lakes can often be the highlight of any trip. Reservations are generally required - supplements and/or reservation fees will apply for pass holders. Refer to pages 24-25 and 45 for scenic train options.

The following facts will assist you in determining which is the right pass or ticket for you. Passes are a fantastic option as they allow unlimited travel, within a nominated validity, on the national rail networks of your chosen countries.

However, if your travel will take you to just a couple of cities, then sector tickets may be the best option.

Global Passes: 24 countries

A Global Pass allows you to explore 24 of Europe’s most popular countries, providing unlimited train travel and incorporating some ferry journeys. These passes are great for those planning to travel to as many countries as possible.

Select Passes: Adjoining countries

Create your own European rail pass by choosing two, three or four adjoining countries.

Saver Pass fares are available on many passes and are applicable when two or more adults are travelling together. The fares offer a discount of approximately 15% per person off the regular adult fare. Saver Passes can be purchased for a maximum of five people per pass. Twin Pass fares are available on the German Pass; these only apply to two adults travelling together.

Durations

Travel day options may be consecutive or flexible. A consecutive pass is valid for the specific number of days purchased, for example a 15-day pass is valid for 15 days in a row. You do not have to travel every day, however, there is no refund on unused days. The Flexi Pass gives you the flexibility of purchasing a certain number of travel days, which must be used within a specified period.

Sector/Point to Point tickets

These tickets are the most cost effective way to travel when your requirements are limited to a minimal number of destinations. Tickets are valid for a single journey from one destination to another. A reservation can be made on a particular service (reservation fees apply) or the ticket can be open dated and is valid for two months.

Reservations

A rail pass or sector ticket allows you to board a train but does not guarantee a seat or sleeping space. By making a reservation, you have an allocated space on a specific train, on a specific date and time. Reservations incur an additional surcharge and are subject to availability. A booking fee is payable when reservations are requested.

Should I make a reservation?

Reservations are required on most high-speed, overnight/hotel trains, Swiss Scenic Trains and all ‘R’ designated trains on the European timetables. In addition they are recommended for long distance journeys, during peak periods or if you must reach your destination by a certain day and time. Reservations can be arranged prior to departing Australia or once you are in Europe - the choice is yours.

Are there any fees involved in making a reservation?

Bookings requiring seat reservation will incur additional fees. A $10 per person online booking fee applies. A flat fee of $55 applies to bookings made via email and/or telephone. In addition, to this fee, the rail company may also apply a fee. This is not a standard charge; fees differ from rail network to network and can depend on the class of travel, routing, which train is running, time and/or date of travel. Fees/costs are available on application.

CITY SIGHTSEEING

EURAIL

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Is everyone eligible to buy Eurail Products?

With a Eurail Pass, Europe is yours to explore! It Offers a unique and flexible travel experience that allows you to stop anywhere, anytime. Travel during the day to enjoy the stunning scenery or at night to save the cost of accommodation and have a full day to enjoy on arrival.

Anyone, except residents from the countries of Europe, UK, the Russian Federation, Turkey, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, can purchase a Eurail Pass. If you have been living in Europe for six months or more you are considered a European resident and are not eligible to purchase a pass.

How do I validate my pass?

Before your first journey you need to validate your pass. Present your pass and passport at the station ticket window and the rail clerk will record all the relevant details to validate your pass. If you have a Select Pass or one with flexible travel days, you need to fill in subsequent travel dates. Passes must be validated within eleven months of issue. Refer to page 35 for more information regarding how to use your pass.

What constitutes a rail day?

Travel between midnight and midnight of the following day (24 hour period).

What happens if I have a problem in Europe? Rail travel is a way of life for Europeans. The extensive networks cover major cities and small country villages. The system is highly efficient, with most trains running on time, all of the time. Stations are well signed, making it easy to find the right train and regular announcements on board ensure that you always know what the next station is.

E U R AI L - YO U R Q UE STI O NS AN SW E R E D

CHILDREN TRAVEL FREE

Children aged between 4-11 years travel for FREE on all Eurail passes. Up to 2 children per paying adult are entitled to travel for free, children must be accompanied by an adult when travelling. Whilst seat reservations are not always required, where a seat reservations is compulsory or requested, charges will apply. Children not accompanied by an adult or additional children, are entitled to a 50% discount on regular fares.

A number of Aid Offices are located at key stations throughout Europe. Your documentation will include a copy of the Eurail Traveller’s Guide, which has a full list of Aid Office contact details. Staff at these offices can assist with any pass related queries or problems.

What happens if my pass is lost or stolen?

Unfortunately passes cannot be refunded or reissued. It is recommended that you take out appropriate travel insurance to cover lost or stolen passes.

Can I travel in a country not covered by my pass?

If a train transits through a country not covered by your pass, you need to purchase a sector ticket. It is important to check schedules carefully.

Are there any luggage restrictions?

There are few trains with weight restrictions on luggage, however, it is up to you to get your own luggage on and off the train. It is best to travel with bags that you can manage yourself and, as platforms can be long, it helps if your luggage has wheels.

How do I find timetables and the right train?

Most stations display colour-coded posters which detail times and platform numbers; generally departure timetables have a yellow background and arrivals are white. Major rail stations have computerized information boards. Trains will be listed from 00.01 to 24.00 hours.

What facilities are available at train stations?

Most major stations have a full range of services such as ATMs, currency exchange, information desks, phones, food outlets, bookstores, postal services, access to metro/ subway stations, lockers and restrooms.

Is it hard to find the right car? BONUSES

B

7PM BONUS

7

You could travel between 7pm and midnight for FREE. If you board a direct overnight train after 7pm (1900), then you only need to write the next day’s date in the calendar box on your pass, provided it falls within the validity of the pass. Passes that have the 7pm Bonus feature the symbol above.

34

Numbers are displayed near the train’s door or on the window to indicate whether the carriage is First or Second Class or a combination of both. The destination and car number will also be displayed near the door. As some trains can split and be sent in different directions, it is important to make sure of the destination of the car. Once on board, seat numbers are noted on compartment doors or the seat headrest.

On board, what will conductors need to see?

Conductors will pass through the train after departure to check travel documents. You will need to show your validated pass or sector ticket. Pass holders may also be asked for their passport. It is your responsibility to have all relevant visas and valid travel documents.

Can I purchase meals on board?

Many long distance trains offer full service restaurant cars, whilst other trains will have light meals and snacks in the buffet car. It is also permitted to take your own food and drinks on board with you.

HOW TO USE YOUR EURAIL PASS Your documentation

Aside from your Eurail Pass you will also need a valid passport and, depending on your nationality, you may also need a visa to visit certain countries. Travel insurance is strongly recommended as lost or stolen tickets cannot be reissued or refunded. It is important that the details on your pass are correct. When you receive your pass, please check names are as per passport and ensure that all other details are accurate. If there is an error, you must return the pass to the place of purchase to have it corrected, as you will be unable to use it in Europe if it contains a mistake.

How to validate your Eurail Pass

Before you can use your pass it must be validated. This can be done by the travel agent you purchased the pass from, however most people will usually arrange this once they are in Europe. Your pass must be validated within 11 months of the date of issue. Present your pass at a ticket window of a train station in the country of travel or Eurail Aid Office; the person activating your ticket will stamp the date in the activation box, fill out your passport number and the first and last allowed days of travel. The first travel day can be the one on which the ticket is activated, or a later date. The last day will always correspond to the complete length of time the pass is valid for. Travel can begin after midnight on the first day of validity and must be completed by midnight on the last day of validity.

How often can I use my Eurail Pass?

This depends on whether your pass offers flexi or continuous travel days. A Continuous Pass can be used every day during the time period for which it is valid. A Flexi Pass can only be used for a set number of travel days within a specific period of time. On any travel day, you can hop on and off as many trains as you like. But before you board your first train of the day, it is extremely important that you write the date in the Travel Calendar on your ticket. Not doing so is the same as travelling without a ticket, which means you will have to pay a full-fare ticket and may also risk a fine. It is important to note that whilst you can travel on as many trains as is possible on any given day, some trains may require seat reservations. These are not included in the cost of the pass and can be purchased prior to departing Australia or when you are in Europe.

How do I fill in the Travel Calendar?

The Travel Calendar will have a day and month box for each of the travel days you are entitled to. Even if you already have a carefully planned schedule worked out, don’t fill in the whole calendar at once - you’ll lose all flexibility about when you can travel! As you start each travel day, use numerals to write the day in the box marked ‘Day’ and month in the box marked ‘Mth’. Enter each travel day in a separate box using blue or black ink.

What if I make a mistake filling out the Travel Calendar?

Featured prices are a guide only. Your travel agent will provide the most current prices at time of quoting. Prices are inclusive of a $10 per person online booking fee, with the exception of VIA Rail and Amtrak bookings which incur a fee of $15 per booking. Bookings made via email and/or telephone incur a flat fee of $55 per booking. Booking fees are waived for bookings which include a minimum of $200 land content. Other options are available on many of the products featured.

35

HOW TO U S E YOU R E U R AI L PASS

Be very careful and try not to - mistakes cannot be corrected, since an altered travel date could be interpreted as an attempt at fraud. You will have to enter the correct day in the next box, which means you lose one travel day. In case you make a mistake, you can have your pass replaced for a fee at the nearest Eurail Aid Office.

BRITRAIL

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Can I purchase BritRail Passes in the UK?

Explore the UK and Ireland by train with the convenience of the BritRail pass range. From the Cliffs of Dover to the Scottish Highlands, enjoy the dramatic scenery as you travel north, south and everywhere in between.

BritRail Passes are only available to non-UK/European residents. You must purchase your BritRail Pass prior to arriving in the UK.

Is my BritRail Pass valid on all trains operating in the UK?

The BritRail train network is made up of many private rail companies - many major train companies are covered by your rail pass. Selected passes will also allow travel on the airport links to/from Heathrow or Gatwick. Travel on the London Underground or Tube services is not covered.

Is there a pass that does include travel on the London Underground?

Yes, an Oyster Card or a London Travel Card is valid for travel on the Underground, Dockland rail services and buses. Refer to page 28.

Do I have to reserve a seat? BritRail passes offer value for money, with flexible travel day options and choice of destinations there is bound to be one to suit every travel need. BritRail is simply your passport to Britain!

CHILDREN TRAVEL FREE

One child aged between 5-15 years travels FREE on selected BritRail passes with every paying adult or senior. Children must be accompanied by an adult when travelling. Whilst seat reservations are not always required, where a seat reservations is compulsory or requested, charges will apply. Children not accompanied by an adult or additional children, are entitled to a 50% discount on regular fares.

Trains in Britain run frequently and therefore you can simply turn up and board the train. However it is advisable to book during peak times or on/around public holidays. Should you wish to reserve seats prior to your departure from Australia, reservation charges will apply. You will be able to make reservations while in the UK and a supplement will be payable upon presentation of your pass.

What ticket should I buy?

If you plan to explore all that Britain has to offer, taking in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland or a combination of these countries, then we have a pass for you. Or if you are planning to visit only one or two cities, then sector tickets may be your best option. Once you know the destinations you wish to visit, then you need to decide how often you will be travelling, in order to determine the pass duration that best suits you. The travel day options of rail passes may be consecutive or flexible. A consecutive pass is valid for the specific number of consecutive days purchased. The Flexi Pass gives you the flexibility of purchasing a certain number of travel days, which must be used within a specified period.

Sector/Point to Point tickets

If you’re only planning one or two train trips, then there is a wide range of advance booking fares which provide savings of 15-60% on the regular fares. It is important to note these fares are instant purchase and subject to availability at time of booking. Fares are available in either First or Standard Class.

BritRail passes offer a number of fabulous bonuses, as detailed below. All of the bonuses are applicable to BritRail Consecutive and Flexi passes only. Airport Links: Travel on the Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted Express with your pass. It is important to note that travel on the airport links will constitute a day on the rail pass, so depending on your travel plans you will need to factor this in. Our reservations team will be only too pleased to assist you with any queries. Eurostar Reduced Fares: BritRail passholders receive reduced fares when booking Eurostar between London and Paris or Brussels v.v. in conjunction with any BritRail Pass. Off Peak Fares: Save approximately 20% when travelling during off peak months of January, February, November and December.

7 7pm Bonus: You could travel between 7pm and midnight for FREE. If you board a

direct overnight train after 7pm (1900), then you only need to write the next day’s date in the calendar box on your pass, provided it falls within the validity of the pass. Passes that have the 7pm Bonus feature the symbol above.
