love travelling. As soon as I walk into an airport, a smile lights up my face and it feels like the most natural thing in the world is to have a drink in the middle of the day and spontaneously to invest in products, clothes and gizmos I had no idea I needed. Simply put, I slip into ‘holiday mode’ the minute I arrive at Oslo Airport. The last time I was here – on my way to a weekend break in the mountains of Sweden – I suddenly found myself with a bag full of scrunchies and hair clips, along with all kinds of decorative bits and pieces and jewellery from

ccessorize, barely five minutes A after I’d passed through security. Not exactly essential equipment for a weekend in the mountains, but – as usual – the cash was burning a hole in my pocket. And back home once more, I strolled contentedly through the empty streets of Oslo, with the spring sun on my face, and a fine display of colourful decorations on my head. For a committed airport shopper like me, it is a delight to see that work is well underway to expand Oslo Airport. With more terminals, shops, cafés and restaurants, Norway’s main airport will be even

make a start here and now. There will be all sorts of exciting things shooting up here, there and everywhere in the airport, and both while the work is under way and when the beautifully laid out arena for shopping and dining is ready, Mallpaper will be the magazine to guide you through the jungle of wonderful beauty products, seasonal trends, tasty dishes that make your mouth water, and hot holiday destinations. One of the most popular destinations at this time of year is the classic: Paris – to which you can catch direct flights from OSL several times a day. The French capital is at is most romantic in spring, and it is hard not to be entranced by the city that simply radiates passion, exciting tastes and refined façades. Up until two years ago, I’d never set foot in Paris. Why? I really don’t know, but when two friends moved to the City of Light and dropped an airline ticket in my hands, I finally made the journey. I was, of course, looking forward to the experience, but it wasn’t until I’d strolled down the Champs-Élysées, hung out in cafés and trawled through vintage boutiques in Marais that I finally realised what I’d been missing all these years. Simply being surrounded by the French language and world-famous fashion houses applied a sheen of elegance to the day, and when I gazed up at the Eiffel Tower for the first time, I was utterly star-struck! What is more, Paris has something I prize higher than almost

8

anything else around every corner: juicy croque monsieurs, delicious wines and cheeses that simply melt on the tongue. I fell deeply and instantly in love, and actually went back again just two weeks later. This spring, I’m ready to be enchanted by Turkey as well – having read the travelogue about the mega-city Istanbul on page 38, towards the back of this magazine. WAKING UP Mallpaper is published six times a year, and we promise to pack every issue with useful information, handy travel tips and articles about inspiring people. In this, our first ever issue, you can meet TV personality and training guru Johanne Grønneberg Mesa, read her hints about what to see and do if you visit her home town of Los Angeles, and follow her simple tips about what you can do to stay active while travelling. We are also serving up the perfect recipe for how to wake up your body after your winter ‘hibernation’, a guide to the most beautiful and sophisticated parks in the world and introducing Folk of OSL – a selection of the people who help make Oslo airport such a thriving and fashionable gateway to the world. Hope you’ll let us come along on your journey!

WHATS UP! THEME PARKS 1 DAY

Hunderfossen Family Park in Lillehammer is one of Norway's most popular tourist attractions, with over 250,000 visitors every summer. Known as the adventure park for all of Norway, and with Il Tempo Extra Gigante as the latest addition – the brand-new roller coaster.

3 DAYS

Children, adults – e veryone loves Copenhagen. And everyone loves Tivoli. Enjoy the view of the flowers, try one of the world's oldest roller coasters, attend pantomime performances and eat a fine dinner at one of Copenhagen's restaurants.

7 DAYS

World's oldest amusement park, with more than 25 million tourists annually, based in the heart of Orlando in Florida – Disney World. The entire thing so gigantic and extensive that you probably could do a month rather than a week. Something none of your children would have anything against, probably.

17 – 18 APRIL

COACHELLA

It's the largest music festival in the U.S. and annually draws tens of thousands of music lovers and fashionistas from the entire world – we're talking of course about Coachella. AC/DC, Drake, Steely Dan, Ryan Adams, David Guetta, Jack White, Tame Impala, Azelia Banks ... the list goes on. Norway is also represented – both Todd Terje and Kygo appear on this year's festival poster. www.coachella.com AROUND MAY 30TH

SKI IN THE SUN

Haven't had enough snow underfoot? Or do you wish winter were a little warmer? Salvation in that case is called Stryn Summer Ski Centre, which at the end of May every year takes in snowboarders and others for a last couple of roaring weeks of downhill runs in the early summer sun at Strynfjellet. www.stryn.no 16 MAY

MARATHON ON THE WALL

The marathon on the Great Wall of China has established itself since its inception in 1999 as one of the toughest, most challenging 26.2

mile races in the world, with its steep stairways and more than 5,000 steps. More than 2,500 runners from more than 60 countries participated last year, and no fewer are likely to come this year to participate in what will probably be one of the most breathless experiences of their lives. Whether a person manages to fully enjoy the view is another matter. great-wall-marathon.com 17 MAY

CHEERING IN THE CAPITAL

Few sights are more beautiful than Karl Johan bathed in sun and flag bearers, snaking upwards on the way to the Palace and the King of Norway on the balcony – and the 17th of May is also one of the greatest outdoor experiences of the year, for both children and adults. Every single little speck of the city has its own programme in the morning, and in the evening the party usually continues with concerts across the entire city. www.visitoslo.com 26 – 31 MAY

PARTY AND PROFESSION

The Norwegian Festival of Literature, or Sigrid Undset Days, if you will, is the largest literary festival in the Nordic countries with an emphasis on contemporary Nordic literature and the interplay between literature and society. Meetings

10

with authors, r eadings, debates, lectures, award ceremonies, performances, exhibitions, seminars, quizzes and general literary festivities fill Lillehammer during these days. Margaret Atwood is publishing her first book in 15 years this autumn and is this year's obvious attraction, but she will be in the company of celebrated authors such as Nordic Council Literature Prize winner Sara Stridsberg, the f orever young Jan Erik Vold, Jonas Gahr Støre and a whole stack of others. www.litteraturfestival.no 26 MAY

MAROON 5 AT WEMBLEY

It's not very easy to get a spot at Wembley for the occasion when a person most wants it – during the FA Cup Final, that is – but a concert with one of the world's greatest bands is an adequate substitute for most people, one should think. At the and of May, Maroon 5 will fill the legendary stadium to dance like Mick Jagger. www.ticketmaster.co.uk

Home and Away Prior MTV host and Hollywood babe Johanna Grønneberg Mesa (35) commutes between the contrasts. TEXT BY THOMAS KARLSEN

J

ohanna Grønneberg was 18 years old, and she knew this: she had to travel. There was a world beyond the neighbourhood in Nesodden that was simply waiting to be explored. Full of a youthful lust for adventure and suitcases packed with self-confidence, she boarded an airplane to Australia - as far away from Norway as it was possible to go. Twenty hours later, she landed in Melbourne - after having cried the entire way from Oslo Airport. "I went into a complete panic!" Became completely unglued, just sat and cried, from when we took off until we landed, including a stop-over of several hours in Singapore." Her fellow passengers tried to console her, but the feeling did not let up: She was on her own now. The safety net was gone. PRONOUNCED CONTRASTS It turned out well of course, like it always does. After studying for three years on A ustralia's Gold Coast, she travelled further to North Dakota in the US and pursued studies in TV production. In 2006, after a short stay in Stockholm, she became a host on MTV, based in New York. "It is the one town in the world that I always dream of going back to, that I can never

ecome tired of. There is no better place b than New York in the spring." She remained in the cosmopolis for two years, before she moved to Los Angeles and MTV's California office. And she is still there. Partly, in any case - she and her husband, the rapper and music producer Vincent Pryme, are half-based in Oslo and half-based in Los Angeles. "Actually, I'm not sure where I'm most at home, but I certainly think that home is where you keep the wedding pictures. And they are in L.A." The commuting also involves her two-year old daughter Savannah having insight into two extremely different worlds early in her life. "It is of course a bit like if a child falls and hurts themselves in an American day care then you receive a certificate with three witness explanations to take with you just so you do not sue them. And the children are just as clean and pretty when you pick them up as when you dropped them off in the morning. In Norway, it's a bit more hard knocks, their clothes have the smell of water in which sausages have been boiled and they have stale liverpaste on their faces," explains Johanna.

FACTS

At Oslo Airport "I always eat in a restaurant in order to relax, and as a rule I go for the Seafood Bar."

DI AL O GUE

Johanna likes contrasts. Between Norway and the US, and between hours perspiring in jogging shoes and fashionable evenings in skyhigh heels. ALL PHOTOS: JOHANNASTYLE.COM

TIP 2

At the airport: "I always allow plenty of time – you have to when you have a dog and a child. And I love the feeling of nearly existing outside time and space once I have gone through the security controls – and am neither here nor there." MY STORY

My strangest flight: "I had my dog, Daisy, with me on a night flight to the US. She is usually always quite silent and calm and just lies in her cage, but this time when I came back after having visited the restroom, I saw that she was gone. I had to go through the entire airplane looking for her. It turned out that she had gone up to first class and she was sitting there and begging for food. She is obviously a high-class pet!"

CHAOS AND RABBIT FODDER Four years ago, she was in the series "Yes, we love Hollywood". And she does so, even if she occasionally might desire a less cumbersome traffic system, or as she says: "if you miss an exit you just have to cancel all your appointments for the day". And despite the fact that it cannot be denied that Los Angeles is a place where the superficial is cultivated to what is nearly an extreme, in any event from a Norwegian viewpoint. "The food is a chapter in itself. On the one hand you have the thoroughly healthy restaurants and on the other hand those where the fat is nearly dripping off the food. But then it is really easy to know what is what. And you become affected by being here: when everyone is super fit, thin and well-groomed, then you yourself also start eating more grass and other rabbit fodder," she laughs. ON THE BUCKET LIST Los Angeles is the town where dreams are created and crushed, which can flaunt its own dream factory in Hollywood, but where it is also a noisy concrete jungle that stretches for miles across, without any actual centre, while always being on its knees due the to the heavy automobile traffic. But regardless: it is a town that Johanna thinks everyone must see before they die.

16

"Quite simply because it is Los A ngeles. Take a walk in Beverly Hills, go film star spotting, stay in Wilshire in the hotel where "Pretty Woman" was filmed, enjoy the 325 days of sunshine, or go to the Whisky A Go Go, The Roxy or one of the other legendary nightclubs on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood," she advises. After seven years in California, Johanna herself prefers Orange County, where she and her husband live, or places such as Newport Beach or Laguna Beach. The latter is what she describes as an upscale hippie town. "It is difficult to explain, but old hippies become quite eccentric and funny when they become wealthy. Laguna Beach is also where her favourite restaurant is located: The Cliff. "The food is good, but edges into the fantastic when it is eaten right at the edge of a cliff, with a view straight down to the Pacific Ocean. This winter and spring, Johanna has been home in Norway. "I really love Oslo in the spring!" she says. "But I think more and more that I ought to stick to L.A. when it is the coldest at home here. Simply put, it is a bit too cold, a bit too long. •

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day – or is it? It all depends where you are.

Start Your Engine Text by Tomas Karlsen

T

hree fried egg and mayonnaise sandwiches with fried tomato and onion on the side. A five-egg omelette. One bowl of porridge, three slices of toasts and three thick A merican chocolate chip pancakes. And three mugs of coffee. That is what the American swimmer Michael Phelps ate in preparation for the Beijing Olympics seven years ago. For breakfast. A whopping 4,000 calories – or approximately double what a grown man should typically eat during an entire day. As a long-dead Frenchman once commented, food shouldn’t be shovelled into the body like coal into a oven, but this approach seems to have worked for Michael Phelps: he won more gold medals

at the Olympics in question than any man or woman had ever done before. Which goes to prove – if nothing else – that breakfast is the most important meal of the day: the ‘little spark’ that kick starts the whole system. In any case, that’s the opinion of the Norwegian Directorate of Health. If we guzzle down a few slices of coarse bread with rich cheese and a large glass of milk, we’ll be much better p repared to face whatever the world chooses to throw at us. Nevertheless, every part of the world has its own way of starting the day. Leave Scandinavia behind and set sail for the British Isles, where a traditional English breakfast – or ‘fry up’, as it is also known – awaits. Egg, bacon, spicy sausage, baked beans, fried bread

18

and fried potatoes – possibly with a little porridge on the side. A heavyweight cholesterol bomb also known by the unflattering nickname of ‘heart attack on a plate’. In Central Europe – i.e. countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland – breakfast is a more restrained affair, often comprising cereals, various types of fruit and a selection of rolls. F arther south, it becomes positively spartan. The French generally limit themselves to a cup of coffee and a croissant before heading off to work in their Renaults and Peugeots, and then waiting for the sumptuous lunch that serves as the main meal in France. Nor will you find people overeating at breakfast in Italy or Spain: a little freshly squeezed

juice, a slice or two of ham and a couple of pieces of Melba toast with crushed tomatoes. One of the reasons for this may be that in these countries, it is traditional to eat dinner late – often after 10 or 11 o’clock at night. breakfast at an airport, however, is usually a bit different to breakfast at a hotel, and Norway is home to an unusual national variation, one you’re unlikely to find in many other countries at 6 in the morning: the half-litre of beer. WINE

PHOOF!

If someone had asked me to capture the essence of a party, I would have done it with precisely those five letters. Text by Ingvild Tennfjord

P

HOOF IS THE sound of a cork popping towards the ceiling. The bubbles forcing their way up along the bottle's neck. The laughter of the guests. Hands holding glasses that flock together to capture every last drop, as if in a race with the bubbles. Phoof, it says however and then the moment is filled with milky-white, lovely bubbles. Clouds in the glass. You put your ear next to it so you can hear how they live down there. Everyday life has been swept away. Welcome to the party. STARS AMONG THE BUBBLES Bottles with bubbles have long been reserved for the rich and famous. Now we drink sparkling wine for both large and small occasions. The selection has increased many fold. The prices have been demo cratised. However, all the choices also make it much more difficult for you to be a customer. What is the difference between Cava and Prosecco? What in the world is a Crémant? And why are all champagnes so much more expensive than the other bottles? Champagne is probably by far the wine world's strongest brand name. However the large stars are not always the best purchases. Sniff! Taste! Enjoy! Because the key to understanding

lies in this - and from there we can quickly get you promoted to the elite division. Everything lies there in front of you. A tapestry of tastes. A profusion of producers. If you start today, you will need several lives to cover it all. So now what? Where do you begin? The greatest deception the wine industry does to everyone who drinks, enjoys and senses wine, is that we constantly give you the impression that wine is too difficult to grasp. That it just is us, the small club on the other side of the fence, who manage to understand, interpret and value the tastes. That is a lie. Unfortunately a quite persistent one. SMELL OF LIFE You can. If I had to leave you with just two frail words, then it must be these. It is a wonderful adventure that awaits you. As you begin to draw the bubbles between your teeth, and assess the size of them, you are already underway. To smell wine, both with and without bubbles, changes the manner that you smell the entire world. You will notice it when you make dinner. Did you ever smell the meat before? Did you memorise the fragrance of a lemon, and attempt to differentiate it from

a lime? If you become more clever at sensing, it will not be just wine that you notice, and you will take things in with greater consciousness. Because you are preparing to embark on a journey of sensual discovery, you will not be able to go back. It will be like ceasing to hear music. The tastes are right in front of you and waiting. You can. "I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it – unless I’m thirsty." Lilly Bollinger. •

All Champagne originates from the vineyards in the district in Northern France of the same name. Everything that bubbles in other words is not Champagne (but can pleasantly fizz on the tongue anyway).

DRINK

CHAMPAGNE Sparkling wines have existed for centuries, and are available in innumerable versions. At the top, the noble drops from Champagne sit in state. Sparkling wine from different places, Cava (Spanish), Sekt (German) and Prosecco (Italian) are often erroneously referred to as Champagne. Only sparkling wine produced in the French district of Champagne may however rightfully call themselves a Champagne. Champagnes are divided up by the type of grape and their sugar content, and three types of grapes are primarily used in the production process: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Champagne also varies between sweet and dry, depending upon how much sugar it contains. A substantial amount of sugar makes for a sweet Champagne, and little sugar makes it dry. The sugar content can vary from 50 grams to 0 grams, and the sequence from sweet to dry is as follows: doux, demi-sec, sec, extra sec, brut, extra brut, and ultra brut. • HOW TO GET THERE

Seventies chic Text by Julie Botnen

Strongly influenced by the 1970s, subdued shades and wavy surfer hair tumbling down the back are the hottest trends in the beauty world right now. All you need to know to get the spring look to fit like a glove.

SKIN: WAKING UP FROM WINTER After months of being packed in thick woollen tights, your legs feel dry as bone; beanies and scarves have left your hair feeling flat and electric; and the skin on your face is tired and lifeless through repeated exposure to freezing temperatures. So most people aren’t really in the mood for stripping down to flimsy clothes and stepping out into the light of the spring sun. Don’t despair! A little ‘spring cleaning’ will have your skin ready for the new season before you know it! Start with your body. Take your time and light scented candles in your bathroom. If you are lucky enough to own a bathtub, pour some essential oils into the water to soften your skin. Clarins has a range of wonderful bath products that work equally well in the shower and the tub. A good body scrub is also the alpha and omega for awakening your body from its winter sleep. Scrubbing the skin helps remove the dead skin cells. It also encourages the new skin cells to come through, immediately making your skin look fresh and glowing. Remember always to scrub from your feet up. This helps eliminate the

waste products from the system via your lymph nodes. The same applies when rubbing in skin cream: start with your feet and work your way up. In addition, this will help ensure that the ingredients in the cream are not wasted on a thick layer of dead skin cells, and that they penetrate deeply into the new skin, maximising the result. MAKE-UP: NATURAL SHADES When it comes to make-up, the natural look is the way to go this spring. Shows from fashion houses and designers such as Chloé, Stella McCartney and Isabel Marant have set the standard for the ‘natural’ trend with hints of 1970s style that is the big hit this season. Even though the expression should be natural, this does not mean that you don’t need any products. Perfect skin needs concealer and foundation, as well as rouge and highlighter. The trick is only to apply the products where they’re needed. Only cover impurities and dark rings under the eyes – and otherwise let the natural skin structure shine through. And if you’re lucky enough to have freckles, show them off! The eyebrows have been a point

32

of focus for several seasons, and this spring is no exception. ‘The bigger the brows, the better,’ is the motto for this season, with models including Cara Delevingne and Joan Smalls showing the way. If you are not blessed with eyebrows à la Delevingne or Smalls, it’s easy to fix. All you need is an eyebrow pencil or eyebrow shade, as well as a sealant of some kind: a gel, eyebrow mascara or a touch of hair spray. Draw on the eyebrows and shape them to suit your taste – ideally ‘up and over’ for a thicker, bushier look. Make sure that the colour principally covers the eyebrows, but if you would like a broader shape, draw it carefully onto

1

Remember the ‘3-minute rule’: If you rub cream into your skin within three minutes of getting out of the bath or shower – i.e. before towelling yourself dry – you will help your skin retain the moisture from the water.

2

Smile to yourself in the mirror and apply rouge to the centre of your apple cheeks. Tone down the colour towards your temples to avoid ‘hard borders’. Peach and coral shades are excellent for all skin tones.

3

Comb your eyebrows up a little for a thicker, bushier look.

your skin (remember symmetry and make sure both brows match). Finish off with an eyebrow gel or mascara, and you’ll have wonderful, notable brows in the blink of an eye!

4

SCENT: A HINT OF HIM A lot of people like to treat themselves to a new spring scent, and it seems only natural to choose one with hints of flowers and citrus. However, a current trend suggests that more and more women are developing a nose for men’s scents – ideally the darker, spicier perfumes.

Exercise on the move Do you travel often and have trouble keeping to your workout routine? Breathe easy – there is help! Text by Julie Botnen

F

or people who are often on the move, it can be hard to maintain good keep fit habits. A short h oliday or even a quick break from the d aily routine can be enough to disrupt your training schedule, leaving your weights and running shoes gathering dust for weeks. “When you spend a lot of time travelling, it’s tough to find the time and the opportunity to work out. Some people suggest doing a series of stretches in the aisle of the aircraft … but thinking about it, this is neither realistic nor particularly pleasant for the other passengers,” says Johanna Grønneberg Mesa, TV personality, training guru and blogger on Johannastyle.com – who you can also read about in her interview on page 13. “But there are some simple exercises you can do during your flight. Stretch your legs and do some toe raises while queuing up for the

t oilet to boost your circulation; and if there’s room, head for the rear of the plane and do some quick kneebends and stretches there. If I’m travelling with my young daughter, I’ll often use her as a ‘dumbbell’ and train my arms at the same time.” And there are plenty of smart and simple ways to keep your level of activity high while you’re away from home. One good tip is to choose your hotel with care. Make sure to pick one that has a fitness centre or a swimming pool – or at least some training facilities nearby. But as Johanna explains, the hotel room itself can also serve as a fitness room. “The bed is an excellent piece of training equipment. Stand in the middle of the bed and do some knee-bends – it’s much harder to keep your balance, instantly making the exercise much more effective. The bed is also useful for doing push-ups. Start off resting

34

your upper body on the bed with your feet on the floor, and then progress to doing full push-ups in the middle of the bed. Once again, it will be much harder to keep your balance, giving your shoulder muscles a much better work-out,” she says. “But don’t expect to devote hours and hours to exercising while you’re travelling – that’s simply not realistic. Instead, set aside 20 minutes or so for an effective workout.” It’s obviously not practical to carry all kinds of training equipment with you while you are travelling. Here, too, Johanna has some good ideas: “A skipping rope takes up hardly any room, but provides a wonderful cardiovascular work-out. And it will help you burn off plenty of fat as well!”

owns come to life, the smell of asphalt awakens childhood memories and canvas shoes replace winter boots in a manifestation that the winter is over. Spring is high time for new tourist experiences, and Norwegians fly in flocks to destinations such as Paris, Berlin and London in order to experience the season in advance. However, if you let the airplane take you an hour longer, away from the near and dear destinations, you can become acquainted with a different, unique paradise. "If one only had one glance at the world, one should stare at Istanbul", said the poet Alphonse de Lamartine, and with good reason. Few towns have more to offer than the Turkish world-class metropolis. UP IN A TOWER, OUT ON THE WATER Istanbul is the town where contrasts collide in a beautiful chaos. With one foot in Europe, one in Asia, and innumerable layers with histories from different epochs, long-standing and deep-running traditions meet in a modern and urban existence. Equipped with a pair of shoes (and probably a camera) one has everything one needs in order to take a dive into the innards of the town.

PHOTO: TONJE ELIASSON

Some will insist that Istanbul is the magical history book that suddenly springs to life when one arrives in the city. Others think it is the most important architectural pearl in Europe. And some individuals highlight the food, spa's and social life. What is certain in any event is that one does not need to be a history fanatic or architecture nerd to be fascinated by the enormous histories that are hiding behind the town's beautiful buildings and streets, where each corner offers many impressions and experiences. Buy some Baklava, Kunefe or perhaps a little Turkish delight for yourself from one of the innumerable local shops, before you let your canvas shoes take you up the stairs to the Galata Tower. With a 3 60-degree panoramic view over the town, you are guaranteed a near-spiritual experience. If you should need more energy you can beneficially avoid an overpriced restaurant in the tower, and instead allow yourself to be tempted by the innumerable authentic eateries in the cosy streets around the tower in Galata. Or what about a glass of T urkish beer at one of the terrace restaurants? Then traipse down to one of the many cruises that take you through the Bosporus,

THE CITY Istanbul is a megacity – the largest in Turkey – with 13 million inhabitants. The town stretches along a 10-20 kilometre wide and 60-70 kilometre long belt on the northern coast of the Sea of Marmara, and the populated area extends to the north on both sides of the Bosporus (the strait that divides the European and the Asian parts of Turkey), nearly all the way up to the Black Sea.

the strip of sea that separates the European and Asian sides of the town. The sight of Istanbul viewed from the side is unique. Back in the town, you can let yourself become enchanted by the incredible Hagia Sophia, one of the greatest architectural works in the world. Since the building was erected in the year 537, it has gone from being a church to being a mosque, and subsequently became a museum. Walk further along to the Basilica Cistern located below ground in the centre of the city. The Cistern, from the 500s, was originally intended to collect and hold rainwater, and with subdued lighting, low classical music and the sound of dripping water in the background, it is difficult to not be enchanted by the romantic – and for some spooky – atmosphere. INEXPENSIVE BAZAAR Istanbul was the end station of the silk road between Europe and Asia, and the trade-based roots of the town are clear once one enters the Grand Bazaar. If the desire to go shopping beckons, then you ought to take the trip to what is the world's largest market, with an incredible 55,000 square metres, 5000 shops, 60 restaurants and 12 mosques. Here, you can purchase whatever you might desire, but remember not to pay full price. Haggling is part of the purchase regardless of whether you are looking for clothes, carpets, jewellery or hides. It can also be beneficial to remember where one came in, if not you will not be the first to walk wildly around the thousands of stalls. To try to take all of Istanbul in is like eating a huge meal. One needs time to digest all the impressions. Take a cup of Chai, apple tea or

POMP AND SPLENDOUR

PARADISE IN ABERDEEN

MADRID RIO

SPECTACULAR IN SAN FRANCISCO

BEACH SNACK IN LOFOTEN

The Czech epublic's capital is R filled with delightful parks where a person can enjoy a quiet moment, and in the middle of the city centre you will find one of the most beautiful: Fansiscan Garden. Fansiscan Garden was established in 1357, in connection with the establishment of the "Church of Our Lady of the Snows", and there is hardly a better view of one of Prague's monuments.

Duthie Park is the name of the 44 acres in Aberdeen, Scotland, that were given as a gift to Lady Elizabeth Duthie of R uthrieston in 1880, and which three years later were opened to the public. This paradise of a park is inter nationally known for its beautiful plants, fountains and statues. A tour of one of Europe's largest winter gardens, David Welch Winter Gardens, is also recommended. And if you come here for the tour, you absolutely must check out the perfume department!

In January 2008, the Madrid Rio project was presented by then Mayor Alberto Ruíz Gallardón, and even the most enthusiastic park dreamer will not be disappointed in Madrid Rio – the 820-hectare, urban park along the Manzanares river. Despite the fact that the nearest shoreline is 350 kilometres away, beach life can be enjoyed here. Madrid Rio has namely taken the matter into its own hands and made an urban beach in the centre of the city.

Everything in the U.S. is bigger than here in Norway, and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco is the Frogner Park on steroids. With its 1,017 acres, there are few green spaces that can compete with the park's many beautiful gardens, playgrounds, ponds, monuments and picnic locations. If you are still hungry for an impression after your packed lunch has been devoured, the California Academy of S ciences located in the park is recommended, where a unique insight into nature's many secrets is guaranteed.

Wherever you find yourself in Lofoten, the natural world is strikingly beautiful, and the only thing you really need to do is open your eyes. Nevertheless, there are some places that are even better than others. Bring a cup of coffee and some food and wander along Hauklandsstranden. The beach has been recognised as Norway's most beautiful, and with its crystal-clear water framed by mountains, there are few places a packed lunch can be supplemented with a better view.

LAZY DAYS IN DUBAI

LISBON'S GREEN AREA

ROMANTIC IN BANGKOK

HELSINKI'S BEST CUT

Few places have a more hectic tempo than the jet-set city of Dubai. If you get worn out, fortunately you can flee the city's hustle and bustle for a few hours at fantastic Safa Park. With 150 acres in the centre of the city, 16,924 types of trees and bushes, 200 bird species and three rivers, the park is an experience in itself. Go up on one of the park's hills and let your eyes rest on out-of-breath joggers, while you yourself enjoy life on holiday to its fullest.

Parque das Naçþes is the place you visit if you want to take a stroll beyond the ordinary. The area was developed in connection with the selection of the city for a World Exhibition in 1998, and it stands today as a manifestation of the present era in Lisbon. Walk along the new marina before you let yourself be fascinated by one of the world's largest aquariums: Lisbon Oceanarium.

After a few days trawling among temples and shopping centres in Bangkok, it is highly likely that the need to catch one's breath will make itself known. King Rama IX Park is a natural alternative in that case. For the symbolic price of 10 baht, you get access to paradise. In the international garden, seven countries display their landscape, and the botanical garden is also a beautiful sight. To top things off, you can buy an ice cream in one of the many booths, before you glide out into the pond in a swanshaped boat.

Framed by both the sea and nature, Helsinki is a green city with a lively park life. Parks and green spaces actually make up a third of the entire Finnish capital! If you are looking for the best of the best, Alppipuisto Park is recommended, with delightful grassy areas, beautiful fountains and a unique atmosphere. It is also highly likely that you will have time for an artistic element or two while you enjoy food and beverages you have brought.

8 THE NATIONAL GARDEN "It remains in my memory like no other park I have known. It is the quintessence of a park, the thing one feels sometimes in looking at a canvas or dreaming of a place one would like to be in and never finds." Henry Miller was not modest when he described in 1939 what is today the National Garden in Athens. Located behind the Greek government building, you can take a break from the sun in the shade, smell the flowers and just simply take in the idyllic atmosphere.

SECURITY

CHECK-IN MACHINES

SELF-SERVICE TICKET CONTROL AT THE SECURITY CHECKPOINT

The blue check-in machines for SAS and Star Alliance were replaced in March with 38 new common check-in machines for all travellers. The airlines still have their core areas with staff who help passengers, but more common machines means that travellers get more places to check in. This also applies for those who are travelling by charter. For OSL, this means that we can offer greater flexibility to you as a traveller. •

Self-service ticket machines will be set up before summer in front of the security checkpoint. Travellers will then validate their tickets themselves on the way in to the security checkpoint. There will still be manual validation at Lane 8 for travellers with reduced mobility and at Lane 9 for families with children (the Family Lane). Persons who are escorting travellers, and who only have an escort card and no ticket, may use either Lane 8 or 9 for this. •

SECURITY

THE FUTURE OF SECURITY CONTROL AT AVINOR’S AIRPORTS

FREE

We are testing four different security scanners to learn how they can enhance security and whether they can facilitate an inspection that is perceived as more convenient for the passengers. Avinor and Oslo Airport wish to facilitate a better flow through the security control area, and we believe that use of security scanners can help us achieve this. During certain periods toward May, we will start having travellers test the new security scanners and ask them to provide feedback. Would you give this a try?

There is free Wifi at Oslo Airport!

NO1 Oslo Airport was the largest airport in the Nordic countries in February in number of passengers? Kastrup was number two, while Arlanda came in third. This is the fourth time Oslo Airport has had the highest number of passengers in the Nordic countries. WORK

CUSTOMER SERVICE ON FACEBOOK Are you following Oslo Airport on F acebook? If so, you might know that we have over 50,000 followers and over 1 million check-ins! That means that we are the site in Norway where most people check in on Facebook. Now we also have 24-hr customer service via Facebook so that you can get help no matter what time of day or night. Where is the airport’s loading zone for the bus to Gjøvik? Which counter should I use if I am flying to Dubai? Can I take fried eggs through the security inspection? What is the fastest way for me to get to the hotel at Skøyen? These are examples of the questions we get each day. What would you like to know?

• You can travel to eleven intercontinental destinations from Oslo Airport?

24 MILL.

• More than 24 million passengers departed from Oslo Airport in 2014 and slightly more than 50 million passengers to and from Norwegian airports.

WORK UNDISTURBED BEFORE YOU FLY? Many passengers want an opportunity to be able to work when they are travelling, and therefore we have set up a work zone at International where a person can work in surroundings adapted for this. The area is well marked and is located in the vicinity of the passport control, farthest out in the International Pier. The work zone is equipped with chairs that have double electrical outlets, own desk for personal computer and good screening against noise and access to look in. In addition, counters have been set up at the windows, where you can enjoy a good view of the planes while you get the job done. •
