Once upon a time there was a little girl. Her name was Frances. She was born in America, in Brooklyn, New York City. Frances was almost six years old, smart and curious. She loved to travel and wanted to know a lot about New York and other cities.
5
One sunny day, Frances and her parents took the train to Coney Island. This was an amusement park which Frances loved. It was located in south-western Brooklyn at the Atlantic Ocean and was famous for its Wonder Wheel and wooden roller coaster called the Cyclone!
6
While they were eating their hot dogs and looking at the Ocean, Frances asked her Mum: 7
“Mommy, I want to know what is behind the Ocean. Her Mum and Dad had once met a girl from Germany, Europe. Her name was Vanessa. And so Mum said:
8
“If you want to know more about the city where Vanessa lives, feel free to call Vanessa and ask her. She will tell you everything she knows.
9
“If you want to visit her, you have to take a plane. It is a long trip to Europe, and you will have to be patient for hours!” Dad said.
“You will fly all the way across the Atlantic Ocean and pass six time zones.
10
That means the time difference between New York and Germany is six hours.
11
The next morning, Frances called Vanessa at 9 o´clock in the morning.
12
Vanessa picked up the telephone at 3 o´clock in the afternoon. She was surprised and happy to get a phone call from Frances in New York! Frances asked Vanessa: “Where do you live?”

“I live in Cologne. Cologne is located in West Central Germany. The federal state is called North Rhine-Westphalia. This is the largest German federal state.
15
“Cologne can look back on two thousand years of economic and social history. The city´s most famous landmark is the Cologne Cathedral.”
