the illness still needed constant help. Living in Israel at the time, she was able to reap in the glorious benefits of the Dead Sea and all its minerals.

This is where she saw the true transformation on her dry skin and stretch marks. Once moving to New York and getting settled into the craze of the

city, she realized that she wanted to help people just as so many doctors and specialists had helped her in Israel. Her mind first went to one thing, The Dead Sea. So many people struggle with eczema, dry skin, and other skin issues that are never talked about it due to embarrassment. She knew

that feeling very well but also knew that with the unique and powerful minerals of the Dead Sea such as Zinc and Magnesium which both aid

Since then Miri has been able to create different and unique

skincare lines that truly transform the skin. With three different lines and a brand new Men’s Line that came out this year, anyone can most certainly

find the type of lotion or face serum they are looking for, no matter the skin type. Examples of one of the skin-changing treatments are two of Arianna

Skincare’s best sellers. The Ultra Exfoliating Body Treatment and Ultra Nourishing Body Butter are the perfect pair for dry, cracked skin. Using this

treatment every day would ensure no inch of your skin goes unnourished.

Although only one treatment example, Miri Torres strives to show the world the wonderful and beneficial healing powers of the Dead Sea, something she came to know and love herself.

pring has sprung and it is time to wash away those winter time blues and jump start your beauty regimen with beauty tips from Carl Ray, personal makeup artist to America’s First Lady Michelle Obama. Get the full scoop as he keeps us in the know with his many tips, tricks, and hacks for tackling all of your beauty needs. •

Conceal dark circles and puffy eyes the right way by creating a triangle with your cover-up.

Make contouring look more natural by using a pencil, pen, or makeup brush handle as your guide to finding exactly where your cheekbone is.

Hit your eyelash curler with a hair dryer to heat it up, so your lashes curl easier

Use a white or light eyeliner to really make your eyes pop (or hide how tired/ hungover you are).

If you want to fake fuller lips, applying light pencil in the center of your lips will do the trick.

Prime your eyes with white eyeliner or eyeshadow to really make your colorful shadows and liners stand out.

To make your lipstick last all day, hold a tissue over your lips and dust them with translucent powder.

In a pinch or for a long weekend try applying a flesh tone cream blush or lipstick on Cheeks, Lips & Lids for a soft fresh monochromatic look.

If your lips are a bit chapped or flaky, take an old toothbrush to brush away the flakes to reveal softer, kissable lips.

If you start to see thinning or bald patches on your eyebrows, apply Rogaine or lash growth serum to the area to help your eyebrows grow.

“Always put on your eye makeup before any other makeup application. Why? Because eyeshadow powder tends to fall out quicker and in the end there’s less cleanup.”

NAEEM KHAN Originating in the 1920s, Art Deco was a movement in the decorative arts and architecture. Art Deco represented modernity turned into fashion with an “intention to create a sleek and anti-traditional elegance that symbolized wealth and sophistication.” Naeem Khan, known as the unmistakable ‘KING’ of award show season, dominates the red carpet. This season Khan took inspiration from New York, particularly the architecture and design from New York City’s Art Deco movement. He paid homage to the grand ladies of New York and the wit and charm of a city he has called home for many years. The collection portrayed a streamlined look of clean and concise precision in each design with ornate, geometric lines that are all too familiar with the aesthetic of the Art Deco movement. Influences of India, Morocco, and Bangladesh were used to tell a story of international discovery. Khan was quoted as saying that he thrives on using “the richness of each part of the world combined with what Hollywood wants.” Regarded as one of Khan’s strongest collections, this is what New York Fashion Week needed in bringing a bit of dramatic appeal back to the game. This was a collection that sent one’s senses into overdrive, from the exquisite use of various textiles such as leather, suede, lace and metals to the remarkable craftsmanship of gowns, caftans, and capes, the collection highlighted the theatrical power house that is Naeem Khan. Models adorned with what looked like a carefully crafted birds nest on their heads told a strong hair story to embrace the texture and shapes to balance out the elaborate designs of this collection. They were accompanied by porcelain skin, bold eye brows and smoking red lips. Nothing could beat the dramatic finale with the lyrics of “the flashing lights” heard as models lined up in formation for their final stance. Walking through the middle, Khan escorted 11-year old Trinity Faith Moran, a girl from the Make-A-Wish that Khan has partnered with. Trinity’s wish was to walk down the runway during New York Fashion Week. This was a touching moment that gave some needed perspective to this frenzied week of events.

B A R B A R A T FA N K ‘A New Modern Opulence’ has become the trademark for Barbara Tfank. Tfank wants clothes to match the occasion. No page has been left unturned since her debut collection in 2001, and she has dressed everyone from the First Lady, Michelle Obama to the captivating British songstress, Adele at the 2009 Grammy Awards. It’s safe to say Tfank is a designer who designs with a purpose in mind; to allow women to feel a sense of elegance, poise and luxury with each and every one of her designs. Her recent collection led the opinionated fashion crowds away from the frenzied tents of Skylight to a more subdued location at Madeline Weinrib Studio. The studio gave way to a more intimate setting, laced with various textiles along the floors and walls that complimented the vivid color palette, prints and impactful textiles Tfank is known for. The models lined up in formation, which they would change several times. The presentation was very relaxed and inviting, providing onlookers with a comfortable feeling toward both model and designer; a common trend for most presentations. Tfank stayed true to her classically themed 1960s aesthetic of timeless eveningwear. Each piece was beautifully executed, from introducing bedded lace for the first time, to ornate brocades, and enriched black furs, that she partnered with Saga Furs to create. The color palette had a muted tone, including: black, ruby, velvet, gold, rusty orange, magenta, and rose. Textiles such as, tweed, tulle, satin, silk, fur, and transparent lace created a collection for every lady’s inner ‘dame.’ The collection revealed cocktail dresses, elaborate gowns, and more casual two-piece garments of straight leg black pants and effortlessly flowing skirts accompanied by cropped over coats. There was very little use of jewelry, for good reason. For a collection such as this, the garments speak for themselves and any small addition might have taken away from the ostentatious element of each design. There were a few gold accents thrown in for good measure, such as cuff bracelets and earrings, which were designed by Amanda Ross. All shoes were designed by Monolo Blahnik in either gold or black. The simplicity of the shoes stayed true to the collection’s aesthetic, that contrasted perfectly with the luxurious prints.

J. SALINAS Jorge Salinas was one of the many newer designers to grace the runways at New York Fashion Week. Jorge is no rooky to the fashion industry, with his debut collection, ‘Paracas’ arriving after 20 years of designing for fast-fashion collections in his native Peru. Paracas, an ancient Andean population that specialized in the creation of complex textiles, served as a huge source of inspiration for his collection. Salinas introduced an array of multilayered textiles from Europe and South America: alpaca leather-trimmed coats, interwoven alpaca sweaters, Mongolian fur edged coats, fur collars, silk and organza. Salinas adhered to the urban attitude of New York City’s tough exterior through a plethora of statement pieces which can easily be worn throughout any major metropolitan city. This was then complemented by a minimal color palette of black, white, and burnt orange.

B

eauty, brains, and brawn have been noted as the necessary power-trio for females in pop culture today. When thinking of the modeling industry, a few choice words come to mind: superficial, unrealistic, and imageobsessed. While these descriptions may very well be true, there is more than meets the eye to the modelling industry. The modeling and fashion industry is a multi-billion-dollar, well-oiled machine where models must embrace their image as a branding mechanism. Models are expected to be multifaceted and well-versed concerning their industry. It’s no wonder that the ‘IT’ girls of the social media and modeling worlds take their brands extremely seriously, such as Kendal Jenner to Gigi Hadid, and everyone in between. Jessica Carter is represented by Click Model Management and has broken the industry down to a science, from commercial and print advertorials to her most notable booking to date; her debut as an “Angel” (both figuratively and literally) in Victoria Secret’s 2015 Fashion show in New York City. Jessica Carter is a RAINE Maker in every sense of the word, from dominating the catwalks to effortlessly and elegantly making a difference in an industry that only focuses on the exterior. Thank you Jessica, for being RAINE worthy.

“Smile. I think everyone looks more beautiful when they smile.”

/ RAINE: Every model has an interesting discovery story. What’s yours? CARTER: I was twelve years old shopping at a nearby mall when I was scouted by a NH agency RAINE: What one thing helped you to best manage your career in the early years? CARTER: My sophomore year of highs school is when everything started to become a bit more hectic. The principal at that time allowed me to take time off for shoots as long as I handed my work in on time. RAINE: What has been your most memorable show and why? CARTER: My most memorable fashion show is probably my first one considering I was so extremely nervous. It was for Filene’s when I was 15. I’ve always been rather introverted so having to walk in front of hundreds of people gave me a bit of anxiety. RAINE: Who were the three most influential people in helping you start your career? CARTER: Clayton Nelson because he helped jumpstart my career Stefano D’ Angola because

he’s been by side throughout most of my career Kim Kennedy because he was such an empowering force in my life and career RAINE: Your story will be in the Health & Beauty Issue. What are your top five beauty hacks you can share? CARTER: • Coconut oil for everything :-) hair, face, and body moisture always have water with you • Yoga, yoga, yoga I always put a bit of Vaseline under my eyes when I’m traveling • Smile. I think everyone looks more beautiful when they smile. RAINE: What are five health tips every model should know? CARTER: These aren’t necessarily health tips but here are five takeaways that I’ve learned: • Don’t take anything too seriously... Tomorrow is another day • Always have snacks and water with you • It’s okay to say “no” but don’t be afraid to say “yes” • Don’t wash your hair every day and when you do let it air dry.

Don’t drink soda before doing a lingerie shoot

RAINE: How do you balance your career with being a mother? CARTER: I have the most amazing husband. He is always available to help out when I have to work. There are times when I do feel overwhelmed but running always helps with that. RAINE: Where do you see yourself in five years? CARTER: I honestly have no idea how to answer this question. I am really enjoying where I am in life right now. RAINE: You like to write. Can you share more information about that? CARTER: Books have always been my number one companion. I traveled alone at such a young age and reading always gave me comfort. I started writing a bit in college and my first novel is being published this year.

This Year No More Fears The idea of launching a business and becoming your own boss has always been an integral part of the American Dream. But many people itching to give entrepreneurship a try balk when it comes time to make the move, and in 2015, a Gallup survey revealed why. The three top reasons potential entrepreneurs gave for taking a pass on business ownership were: • • •

They like the security of a steady income provided by someone else. They don’t feel they have enough personal savings to start a business. They worry that the success rates of a new startup are low.

It could be, though, that the real underlying reason hindering those entrepreneurial urges is a common human emotion that often gets in the way of people achieving their goals – fear, says William S. Wooditch, a motivational speaker and author of “Always Forward! Discover the 7 Secrets of Sales Success” (www.BillWooditch.com). “No matter how intrepid we may be, we all have fears, shadows of doubt or even deep seeds of insecurity,” Wooditch says. “We either exist within the limits of our fears or live up to the promise of our potential.” In business and life in general, people voice a number of excuses for their hesitancy to take risks, he says. They say: “I can’t do this.” “I don’t know enough.” “It’s too hard.” “I’m too old.” “I’m not experienced enough.” “It’s too late.” Those attitudes end up becoming self-fulfilling prophecies, because if you convince yourself that you can’t achieve something, you create a situation where belief becomes reality, Wooditch says. He says anyone who dreams of starting a business – but is paralyzed by the fears of potential failure – should consider these points: You are the guardian of your own success • People don’t become successful by wishing and hoping, Wooditch

• •

• •

says. They do it by deciding that if anything is going to change, it’s all up to them. “Winners don’t allow events outside of their control to define their self-worth,” he says. “They know they may fail, but failure doesn’t dominate their thoughts; learning how to win does. When they fail, they don’t call it failure—they call it a learning experience.” Stop feeding your fears Learn what you can and can’t influence and control. Limit the imagination’s default to worst-case scenario and take the necessary steps to achieve the best outcome. Wooditch says the experienced reality of our fears is rarely as bad as what we imagined. “Facing fear will be uncomfortable,” he says. “It may hurt; you may feel like stopping. You might even pause for a while. But you must never quit.” Think and do Many people think, but they choose not to do. They ruminate and they contemplate and they never take it beyond that, Wooditch says. Others have the opposite problem. They act without giving much thought to what they are doing. “This is blindly ambitious at best, misguided and reckless at worst,” he says. The “think and do” approach is a learned habit, Wooditch says. “It will take your instinctive feel, your rational thought and your willpower to put the steps into action that create opportunities for your future,” he says.

If it’s your dream to start a business, Wooditch says, no one is holding you back but you. “We have the choice to become the screenwriters, directors and protagonists in the movies of our lives,” he says. “We also have the choice to relinquish the screenwriting duties and directing duties and become an extra in that movie. “Just remember. The only person in the story of your life who can develop the plot and change the outcome is you.”

Keys to a Fabulous Day By: Dr. Karuna Sabnani, NMD

Y

es, it’s the beginning of the work week again. You have a big week ahead of you and you brace yourself as you stare at your jam packed schedule. Perhaps you have moved at this frantic pace your entire life. The seemingly impossible task of getting through your schedule while looking & feeling fabulous has arrived. But how will you manage this? Your new strategy awaits. Your ritual of guzzling dishwater coffee for breakfast fuel, smoking cigarettes for stress relief & downing bottles of 1997 wine each night for ‘hydration’ is aging you. The solution: a fresh NY-minute beauty routine.

W H AT TO DO : A.M. - This is when the ‘mad dash’ begins; it sets your tone for the day. Take a few moments to compose yourself before jumping out of bed and logging on to your computer. Move slowly before you switch into ‘speedy mode’. To Do: • Drink a few glasses of hot water first thing in the morning BEFORE eating or drinking anything else. This not only hydrates you, but also stimulates your metabolism ahead of your long day. • Double check your bag to make sure you have all of your to-go items. P.M. - The key to being beautiful is to utilize your sleep; use your hours to your advantage. You may not be sleeping that much, so be sure to make the few hours of sleep you do have count.

To Do: • Eat light. • Take 5 minutes to let go of your tension by turning your cell phone off before dozing off. • Take a shower or short bath to wash away your long day. • Relax. • Remember that a youthful, healthy glow comes from hydration. Apply an intense moisturizer to your face with extra focus under your eyes. Apply argan oil, olive oil, castor oil or your favorite hydrating crème. • Prepare your outfit for the next day to save yourself extra stress in the morning. This holds true for men as well.

RAINE MAGAZINE - VOLUME 27

83

To Do: • Boiled eggs with spinach. • White chicken meat on a bed of greens. • Whey protein shakes with blueberries. • Black beans with mixed vegetables. • Lettuce wraps with ground meat & veggies. • Mix & Match - If you must have dessert, have some dark chocolate around midday as it will give you that extra ‘kick’. Beware of pastries!

• Hand Lotion - I like something with lavender in it to add an extra anti-bacterial kick • Cough Drops - Ricola’s herbal variety are my favorite • Friction Stick - This is a life saver for your feet. Remember to use it on the bottom of your feet as well. Keep blisters away with Band Aid’s friction stick • Travel Kleenex Pack • Tweezerman Travel Size Kits - Contains mini tweezers, nail file, nail cutter, etc. in cute, colorful pouches. • Rescue Remedy - A flower essence blend that is amazing for stressful situations of all kinds. Comes in drops, spray and a convenient pastille tin. • Phone Charger

W H AT TO DRI NK: Stay hydrated to avoid fatigue, especially when in heated rooms and wine bars. If you are used to drinking caffeinated drinks, a stressful week is not the time to quit, but choose wisely.

W H AT TO RE M E M B E R: Shoes - Do not wear the same shoes two days in a row. Besides being a fashion faux pas, you will feel more energetic if your feet are hitting the ground with different pressure on each long day

To Do: • Remember to drink high quality water in between your meal times. Increase your water intake if you drank alcohol the night before. • Replace coffee with green tea so you get the antioxidants, along with caffeine kick you are used to. If it’s freezing where you are, have ginger tea to keep you warm. If your digestion needs some assistance, add some peppermint as well.

Hair - If you are tired, wear your hair in a slick, tied-back ponytail, or straighten it. Forgo the bed hair look. The feeling of neatness conveys being ‘well put together’.

W H AT TO P UT I N YOU R BAG : On-the-go beauty essentials are key to looking civilized and glamorous. Be prepared & stress less.

Skin - Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Doing so under your makeup and before bed are key.

To Do: • Similasan Eye Drops - remove the tired zombie ASAP! • Hair Wax - This is my #1 beauty trick for men and women. A little goes a long way and can tidy up your flat/ironed look, tighten up your curls, slick back your ponytail, and add shape to any look. A quick bathroom break, and you are as good as new

Rest - Any rest is better than no rest. Steal 5 minutes of shut-eye whenever you can. Even one minute of deep breathing and ‘unplugging’ can go a long way on an insane day.

Focus on what you do everyday in your life to attain your goals. By making daily changes to each aspect of your life, your perspective changes and your actions change. When your actions change, you will feel better and you will achieve that coveted-glamorous-glow!

• EO Peppermint Hand Sanitizing Spray - A spritz from this dainty bottle and you are germ free and peppermint-refreshed • Alba Clear Enzyme Tea Tree Deodorant - It’s only 0.5oz and it’s natural. Enough said • Swissco Travel Toothbrush - These chic toothbrushes have sanitary covers that turn into a handle when needed. They are square shaped, come in different colors, and easily fit into your pouch. Remember to add a travel toothpaste of your choice • Natural Gloss & Red Lipstick - Apply gloss under your lipstick, or by itself. When all else fails, red lipstick comes in handy • Nux Vomica 30c Homeopathic Remedy - A perfect on-the-go remedy for food poisoning, over eating, motion sickness, and hangovers • Vitamin C - You can get little vitamin C bags at The Vitamin Shoppe. Great for an energy boost and fighting off colds and that general ‘blah’ feeling • Rose Water - Refreshing, and has a soothing, sweet smell. Carry it in a small mister bottle

W H AT TO EAT: Keep your meals and snacks simple. Protein-rich choices are key so that you don’t experience a sugar crash that causes you to reach for more sugar. Keep it light if you don’t have time for the gym as overindulging could cause a fashion crisis tomorrow.

5 Ways to a Better Workday

While it’s no surprise that losing weight consistently ranks at the top of New Year’s resolutions, Dr. Donna L. Hamilton says obsession with weight is often too narrow a focus. “For many, weight is a symptom of a lifestyle that’s not conducive to wellness,” says Dr. Hamilton, author of “Wellness Your Way: The Short and Sweet Guide to Creating Your Custom Plan for a Happier, Healthier Life” (www.wellnessyourwaybook.com). Since much of our lives revolve around work, it makes sense to focus our attention on workplace wellness, she says. In addition to the mentally and physically demanding work hours, the American Psychological Association states there are many new factors adding potential stress to today’s work environment. “Because we spend a significant amount of our waking hours working, I encourage people to pay attention to improving their wellbeing at work; doing this is also an effective way to take steps toward improving your overall personal wellness in a way that makes sense for you,” says Dr. Hamilton, who adds that a holistic approach is your surest way for results. She reviews examples within the five arenas of wellness. PH YS I CAL: This deals with tangible things in your life, including your body and your physical environment. Some of the many things you can do to improve this arena at work include using ergonomically sound office equipment, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, and stopping what you’re doing for a moment each hour to stand, stretch and take a few deep breaths. MENTAL: This arena addresses your thoughts and beliefs; it’s that little voice in your head that seems to narrate your day. Keep this arena fresh by learning something new about your job every day. That may include something about your company or something in a related field. If a racing mind keeps you awake at night, try a “brain purge” by writing down everything you have to do the next day and completely forget about those items. They will be there on your list in the morning. EMOT I ONAL: This arena deals with the cornucopia of feelings, which can get in the way of work and wellness. If you feel dissatisfied at the end of your work day, for example, write a list of what you accomplished instead of simply focusing on what’s incomplete or needs to be fixed. Keep a picture of someone or something that makes you smile on your desk. Loved ones, pets and favorite vacation spots work well. Take a look at it if you feel sad, angry or anxious. Or, take a quick break to read or watch something funny – maybe your favorite

meme or gif. A few seconds of laughter can help reduce stress and quickly lift your mood. S O C I A L : This arena includes your habits, hobbies and relationships. The nineto-five or eight-to-six workday can find you stagnant in this arena. As humans, we have social inclinations, so let this space spice things up in your life. Consider inviting a coworker out to lunch or on a walk during break. How well do you know the people you work with? If you’re shy, you may find that a simple invite can lead to an enriching acquaintance at work. According to a study in the Journal of Business Psychology, workers report higher job satisfaction when they feel they have even the opportunity for friendships. S P I R I TUA L : This arena focuses on personal values and life philosophy, including those things that make you feel more grounded. If you feel stress creeping up, do something that helps you get grounded and centered in the moment. For example, remember your personal mission: your hopes, dreams, and desires. Then, think about how your current work supports you in fulfilling your vision. This can help ease feelings of frustration and lack of control. During lunch, you might also try taking a moment of silent reflection or saying grace before eating. This also helps bring you into the moment and focus on what’s really important to you.

The Growing Field of Health Coaching A

scheduled visit with a physician seems to be set to a timer. The doctor, who might not even bother to sit down, asks a few perfunctory questions, makes a quick diagnosis and tells the patient to see a nurse for a prescription. Then the doctor is off to the next patient. On average, physicians spend about seven minutes with each patient. That time crunch may be putting a strain on the doctorpatient relationship, but it’s also among the factors helping to create job opportunities in the growing field of health coaching. Health coaches act as mentors, motivating their clients to make better decisions in their diet and exercise routines, and assisting with stress reduction, all of which can lead to better health and fewer doctor visits. “The coaching industry has seen tremendous growth over the last seven or eight years,” says Dr. Diana Hoppe, founder of Amazing Over 40 Inc. (www.amazingover40.com), a health coaching certification program for women. “Health coaches can devote more time to people than doctors usually are able to, building a relationship that leads to changes in behavior that can prevent diabetes and other chronic conditions.” Health coaches, who can come from any background, sometimes work in doctor’s offices or clinics, but they also can be found in corporate sites, community venues or working from home. Sometimes sessions with clients come over the telephone. “It’s a profession that comes with a lot of flexibility,” Hoppe says. “You can work fulltime or part-time, and decide how you want it to fit into your overall lifestyle.” No specific educational requirements are needed to be a health coach and a good number of coaches haven’t taken classes to become a coach. But training through online certification programs such as Hoppe’s is available. The training typically takes about 60 to 90 days, and the budding health coaches learn about such topics as fitness plans, the science behind healthy foods and how to design a health program for a client. “The growth in health coaching is part of the growth in the overall field of life coaching. It’s an especially appealing career opportunity for people over 40 who have faced age discrimination since the recession and have grown weary of being rejected by hiring managers,” says Ariela Wilcox, president of The Wilcox Agency. Wilcox is a literary agent, but her agency also has a businessmodel licensing division. She helps doctors and other professionals set up their own coaching or health-coaching networks, and she assisted Hoppe in establishing hers. “Thirty years ago there was no such thing as a life coach,” Wilcox

says. “Today it’s a huge profession. The most recent figures are from 2012, and life coaching was a $700 million business in the United States that year and nearly $2 billion worldwide.” Hoppe and Wilcox say there are several reasons this is a banner time for the health-coaching industry. A few of those are: • Insurance companies are forcing companies and corporations toward more preventative health care for serious medical conditions, including diabetes, obesity and hypertension. • Laws have changed so that physicians are now paid by Medicare for overseeing weight loss and other conditions in obese patients. Medicare also has been phasing in a plan that links a portion of doctors’ pay to their performance. That plan will be completely phased in by 2017, making the need for health coaches even more important. • There are about 70 million Baby Boomers in the U.S., with 10,000 turning 65 every day. Many of these Baby Boomers will employ health coaches to improve their health and wellness. Wilcox began tracking the rise in coaching ¬– especially health coaching – a number of years ago. “Health coaching has risen 38 percent in the last few years,” Wilcox says. “With the turn toward preventative medicine to cut health costs, as well as the push to address obesity, health coaches will be in an excellent position to create their own health-coaching business or get a job in a clinic, hospital or corporate setting.” The average annual salary for all types of coaches is $47,900, according to the International Coach Federation. In the U.S., fulltime coaches make an average of more than $83,000 and part-time coaches average about $26,000 a year. The advantages for the health coach are clear, but the benefits are also great for the clients and their employers, Wilcox says. “If people are healthier, that can lower the insurance costs for their employers,” she says. “With some companies, you can get a bonus at work or at least pay less for insurance. That’s like giving yourself a raise.” Hoppe expects the demand for health coaches to continue to grow, especially among women. “Women are living longer and searching for ways to take better care of themselves from a preventative and nutritional standpoint,” she says. “Health coaches will provide them the education and accountability they need to achieve their health goals.”

She also is an author and speaker who has been featured on a number of TV shows, including “Dr. Oz.” ABOUT ARIELA WILCOX Ariela Wilcox has the only agency in the United States teaching doctors, trainers, consultants and coaches how to make a six-figure income from their business models, services, trainings, coaching knowledge and medical practices, and how to set up their own health-coach network. Spring Your Best Self Forward for Summer 2016 By Ramel Murphy

MO V E M ENT: Burn fat, build muscle and get your body in shape just in time for summer with this full-body resistance band strength and conditioning circuit. Equipment needed: 2 mini-bands (one light and one harder resistance), 1 treadmill if available. EXERCISE 1A - ELBOW PLANK WITH SINGLE ARM MINI-BAND PULLDOWNS Setup: Assume a plank position, driving your elbows, hands and toes into the ground. Ensure your elbows are directly below your shoulders and that your

feet are hip-width apart. Attach a resistance band to a pole directly above your shoulder. Keeping that line of pull with the shoulder, take one hand and pull down on the resistance band, pulling your elbow into your back pocket. Be sure to keep your entire body parallel to the ground, avoid any hip rotation or shifting, and keep the stabilizing shoulder down and away from your ears as you drive the elbow into the ground throughout. Tempo: 1s pull, 1s hold, 3s release. This delayed release focuses on eccentric control, which is great for building strength. Do 3x10 for each arm. Benefits: This exercise will challenge your core stability, forcing you to avoid rotation and engage your anterior chain. It is great for activating your lats, pecs, and core prior to major upper or lower body lifting days. It can also be used as a great way to engage your back stabilizers and core, providing further support and posture for your upcoming outdoor runs this spring/summer. EXERCISE 1B - T MATRIX MINI-BAND SQUATTING MONSTER WALKS Setup: Place the mini-band around your legs a few inches below your knees. Cross your arms, in a genie pose with your hands on your shoulders and sit into a squatted position with your hips back and a tall spine. Travel left to right, forward and backward, in a squatted stance to form a lower-case t matrix. Take 4 steps in each respective direction. Stand tall, screw-drive your feet into the ground, and squeeze your glutes together as you complete 2 squats each time you come back to the center starting point of the matrix. Keep your knees tracking about your mid-foot when traveling, and avoid all tilting/rotating of the upper body. 3x (1x4 steps each direction) Benefits: This matrix is great for firing up the glutes and inner and outer thighs while hitting your core. By hitting your lower body in this dynamic fashion, you have to coordinate the lower and upper body to remain totally squaredoff throughout the sequence, which burns a significant amount of calories.

Being healthy and fit has always been a major part of who I am. I excelled at various sports growing up, including track, wrestling, and dance, through which I developed a passion for exploring different types of dynamic movement. I have spent the last six years helping clients achieve their utmost physical and performance based goals as a Tier 4 Fitness and Wellness Coach, a ViPR Master Instructor, and a Level 2 Animal Flow Instructor at Equinox; the luxury health and wellness leader in the fitness industry. I attribute much of my success transforming my clients’ physiques, and improving their overall performance both inside and outside of the gym, to building sustainable habits around the three main pillars of Movement, Nutrition, and Recovery. Each component of this M-N-R platform is essential when building a well-rounded, holistic approach toward achieving one’s health and fitness related goals. The following M-N-R strategies are just a few of the many tools I employ to build greater overall strength and endurance for my clients, while preparing them for success in the kitchen and boardroom, and on the sands of their favorite beaches. These strategies are not only for those passionate about optimizing their overall human performance. They can be seamlessly applied to those building a regimen towards their desired body for the upcoming summer.

LATERAL LUNGE WITH FRONTAL PLANE REACHES

Additionally, this exercise sequence will prime your body for the explosive, highintensity conditioning work that comes later in this circuit, or any other full-body workout for that matter. EXERCISE 1C - MINI-BAND LATERAL TRAVELING PUSH-UPS Setup: Place the mini-band around your wrist and assume a tall plank push-up position with extended arms at chest height, shoulder-width apart, and with your feet together, and your eyes gazing at the ground. Complete a push-up by lowering your body toward the ground such that your elbows are at a 90-degree angle, then push your entire body back to tall plank as one unit. Be sure to maintain a long, firm body by squeezing your ankles, knees, and glutes together throughout the push. Travel laterally to your left by simultaneously bringing your hands together and expanding your legs hip-width apart. Complete an additional lateral transition in the same direction, supplanting the hands and feet such that you are ready to repeat an additional shoulder-width push-up. Be sure to screw-drive your hands into the ground, keeping your shoulders down and away from your ears, maintaining a neutral spine parallel to the ground throughout this entire sequence. Do 3x5-6 in each direction. Double up the reps if you want to take your fitness to the next level. Benefits: This is a full-body exercise that will force you to coordinate your upper and lower body segments via the support of your back and core stabilizers. It will strengthen your back, chest, shoulders, and arms, all the while sculpting a toned midsection. It is a demanding, high-calorie burning exercise, but for those who want to take their summer training to the next level, I challenge you to progress with this exercise by adding an additional mini-band around the lower legs. Enjoy! EXERCISE 1D- TREADMILL SLED PUSH OR OUTDOOR SPRINTS Setup: Step on a treadmill and ensure the machine is turned completely off and on zero incline. Place your hands on the handles and begin sprinting full speed, as fast as you can, for at least 30 seconds. If you do not have access to a treadmill, you can perform 2 intervals by sprinting an estimated 100m

and jogging back the same distance between bouts. You can also use various markers, such as the distance of two light posts on the street, but you must ensure that you are consistent. Do 3x30sec on treadmill push or 3x (2x100m repeats) Benefits: This explosive, power-driven exercise is intended to get you into your higher heart rate zones, and burn a significant amount of calories. It will work your entire lower body as you drive the belt of the treadmill, and your upper body as you actively push into the dashboard. Your body will be in such an oxygen deficit that it will continue burning calories after the workout is completed, which is great for burning fat and getting lean, toned muscles. Programming: You can complete this workout in the format presented, or simply do the movements individually. They are all challenging on their own, but can be used interchangeably in any full-body focused workout circuit. I recommend completing 3-4 sets of the circuit twice a week for at least two weeks, prior to progressing to 5-6 rounds the following weeks. N U TR I TI O N : Stay hydrated: Jump start your metabolism by drinking 16 ounces of cold water when you wake up. Your body may burn a few calories heating the cold water to your body’s core temperature. Although the extra calories burned from a single glass may not be significant, making it a daily habit can help you lose pounds over time. On average, you should attempt to drink ½ to 1 ounce of your body weight per pound per day. Proper hydration can help regulate your appetite. People often think they are hungry when they are actually thirsty. In this respect, staying hydrated can help you achieve your desired body composition. provide our bodies with the necessary enzymes, minerals, nutrients, and antioxidants to perform at our best. The darker and greener the vegetable, the better. Fruits packed with Vitamin E and C possess key benefits for summer play such as keeping your skin hydrated, healing, and protected from the sun’s UV rays. These fruits include: oranges, grapefruits, kiwis, strawberries, raspberries, and avocados. EAT H EALTHY FATS T HAT G I VE BACK : Be sure to include healthy fats with each feeding opportunity, putting a greater emphasis on omega-3 fatty acids that come from sources such as salmon, fish oil, chia seeds, hemp, and flax seeds. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential because our bodies cannot produce them; we must obtain them through our food. Omega-3 fatty acids enhance heart health, improve cognition, and decrease overall inflammation. P O WE R UP WITH LEA N PROT E I NS : Proteins are essential to maintaining and building our muscle mass, supplying nutrients to our body for recovery and repair, protecting our immune system, and stabilizing our energy levels. Regardless of whether your goal is weight loss or weight gain, protein is a great way to rev-up your metabolism because it requires more energy expenditure from our body to digest protein versus other macronutrients. Incorporating a fist full of protein for women, and two fists full of protein for men, with each meal over the course of the day, along with a postworkout recovery drink, should cover your daily protein needs. Remember, when it comes to choosing an ideal protein source, the less legs, the better. Always select grilled over fried, white meat over dark meat, and skinless over skin. R EC O V ERY: Apply the 4-7-8 “Relaxing Breath” for stress mitigation, sleep recovery, and greater mental clarity. Setup: Get into a seated position with your back straight against a flat surface as you initially learn the exercise. As you become more experienced, you can complete the exercise anywhere, in any position. Place the tip of your tongue against the tissue just behind your upper front teeth and keep it there for the remainder of the exercise. You are ready to begin. Now: Exhale completely through your mouth, making a ‘whoosh’ sound. Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of FOUR. Hold your breath for SEVEN seconds. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a ‘whoosh’ sound, to a count of EIGHT. This is one breath. Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three more times for a total of four breaths. Setup Continued: It is important that you keep the same 4-7-8 ratio for the breaths regardless of whether you cannot hold the required time or would like to slow down the breaths. Do not complete more than four breaths for the first month of practice. Some of my clients have felt a bit light-headed when first implementing this breathing strategy, but do not get alarmed; that will pass as you continue the exercise. (Source: Dr. Andrew Weil’s. http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/VDR00160/Dr-WeilsBreathing-Exercises-4-7-8-Breath.htm) Benefits: This exercise is a wonderful and effective way to reset your nervous system and directly impact your mental and emotional state of being. You will find this strategy to be very useful before confrontational situations escalate, when you are emotionally compromised, or when trying to relax and fall asleep. Incorporating this highly effective strategy into your daily routine will not only give you a competitive advantage when dealing with stressful situations, but it will also help you to achieve that lean, toned summer physique because lower stress and lower cortisol levels have been linked to decreased fat production.

Spring

is just around the corner. Do you have vacation plans for Spring break? Or are you planning a staycation instead? If you’re thinking about heading somewhere sunny & tropical, the thought of putting your swimsuit on can motivate you to put together a nutrition plan. However, choosing to eat healthier foods, but over eating these foods, can cause problems. Let’s face it; sticking to a ‘clean’ eating plan and consuming the same boring foods can cause you to feel deprived and depressed. Such feelings can cause you to stray from your nutrition plan, and can lead you to binge eat certain foods that you feel deprived of. Selecting balanced meals and consuming proper portions of the food you love can be the key to your success. Some of the foods we love to eat, however, are being accidentally abused via the consumption of improper portion sizes. Because these foods are considered healthier options, we can incorrectly think that eating more is better, but it could in fact be undermining your results.

Here’s a quick lesson in macronutrients: Nut butters are NOT a protein; they are a fat. Many people use this food item as their only source of protein, however its main macronutrient value is as a fat source that also happens to contain protein. It does contain the types of fat that benefit heart health. Nut butters contain both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Both are known to decrease LDL cholesterol and triglyceride

overweight or are insulin resistant, it’s recommended that you limit high sugar fruits (grapes, mangoes & bananas) from your nutrition plan until your weight begins to normalize and you see improvement in your health. So go ahead and mix up your fruits and portion them appropriately to keep your sugar levels balanced throughout the day.

levels, lowering the risk of metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Yes, nuts and nut butters are known for their anti-inflammatory properties as well, but should only be consumed in moderation. Eating peanut butter as a part of every meal can actually cause an inflammatory response in some people. Commercially prepared peanut butter is often the cause. To avoid this response, your best bet is to read the ingredients list and make sure partially hydrogenated oil or vegetable shortening is not used.

If you’re reaching for nut butters, make sure to choose one

without artificial sweeteners or ingredients that can increase inflammation. 1-2 leveled Tbsp per day is acceptable, but not at every meal. When you choose to eat nuts, 4-10 pieces is sufficient to curb unwanted cravings and keep you satisfied. Don’t be a nut butter abuser!

yogurts on the market are filled with sugar. Although yogurt is a source of protein, it is a dairy item that includes fats and carbohydrates. Some dairy items contain several unwanted hormones and are high in fat. I’ve seem many people overeat dairy food items in their nutrition plans and often become “stuck” in a plateau state in regards to their weight goals. For some people, dairy has been proven to cause inflammation. If you’re constantly adding cheese, yogurt, and milk to every meal of the day, you will increase inflammation and feel bloated. Low fat plain Greek yogurt is a cleaner source of protein and can be beneficial when consumed in limited amounts throughout the week. Consuming this yogurt as a source of protein 1-2 times a week, in the right serving size, along with the right balance of carbs & fats to make a complete meal, will help you reach your

goals. A recommended portion of ½ cup-¾ cup, along with 2 Tbsp of

Many people enjoy eating a whole banana as a meal, sometimes by throwing an entire one into their smoothie. The main macronutrient of fruits and vegetables is their carbohydrates (carbs). These foods are processed by your body as carbs. Even though bananas are known to be a source of potassium, they are also high in sugar. You should instead stick to fruits that either have edible skin, edible seeds, or are citrus — bananas do not have edible skin, do not have edible seeds (well, not meaningful ones), and are not a citrus fruit. Most of the fiber and nutrients contained in fruit are located in the fruit’s skin. A banana is the densest piece of fruit that you can

Yogurt is the easiest food to grab as a snack and is the most abused. Most

‘cleaner’ granola, should satisfy as a snack.

The food items listed above are healthy choices to incorporate

into your weekly meal plan. Notice that I used the word “weekly’”. Making them a daily item and overeating them can cause other health related issues and stall your progress. Balance, portion control, and timing your meals appropriately throughout the day is the only way to properly fuel your body and get the results you deserve. Never get bored with your food & always eat with love and happiness. Your body is listening to you...show it some love!

DietSensor DietSensor is the easiest and most accurate nutrient and calorie counter on the market, thanks to its automatic food logging capabilities with connected

sensors. It embeds all classical functions of state of the art manual diet tracking apps, and adds two revolutionary options, in order to offer an outstanding

customer experience to its users: a micro connected scale and a molecular sensor that fits in the palm of its hand. With these sensors, food logging

becomes a lot more simple and accurate than manual entries from lookup tables. The user just drops the food on its plate, press a button to illuminate

(scan) it and the food is automatically logged into its meal, with the accurate each time the user scans, he gets an advice customized to his profile or past

actions. He immediately knows what he needs to add or cut back to balance his meal. All our advices are built by doctors or nutritionists and driven by evidence based medicine.

We fully understand the problem of food counting because our

own daughter got diagnosed with a type 1 diabetes 2 years ago. She had to start counting carbs at every meal with manual tools to dose insulin. We quickly realized that hundreds of millions of people struggle daily to answer

this critical question: how much carbs or fat or protein do I have in my plate?

We found this situation unworthy of the 21st century: they deserve a tool that automatically shows this information on their smartphone with no effort. With

my wife, we decided to create the next generation of food tracking tools, and when we discovered that Consumer Physics, an Israeli company was about to release “the first handheld spectrometer able to analyse the chemical composition of objects around us”, we dropped our careers and partnered with

them to creat DietSensor, “the first automated nutrition coach”. By simplifying

nutrients (carbs, fat and protein) and calorie counting in food and beverage, DietSensor’s mission is to empower and inspire people to eat and live healthier

and to help them achieve their goals, especially for people with food-related chronicle disease. And today we are honored that DietSensor received the Best of Innovation Award for apps and softwares worldwide at CES 2016 on

the criterias of innovation, outstanding design and usefulness, in regards to its profound potential impact on the consumer market. 100

iBackPack

There is a story behind every product and thing in the nature. Nothing happens without reason, and nothing begins to exist without specific purpose. And here is how the iBackPack came to existence. It was an ordinary day, like any other day when our CEO, Doug Monahan was browsing through the internet searching for new technological products. He is a person devoted to learning new things and advancing in life and so he doesn’t want to miss even one tiny, new, technological product. At that moment he came across a Kickstarter campaign, for a product called the Coolest Cooler. It immediately caught his attention with its ability to bring music, fun, and blended cool drinks to any outdoor occasion. The product itself combined new technologies and certainly improved people’s lives. He pondered deeply: “Is there anything in the world that hasn’t been improved? How can we further help people? What other product can be improved and enhanced through the aggregation of techology?” It came to his mind that the backpack is in fact a very low-tech product that could be easily enhanced to include a number of technology advancements. Additionally, everyone owns at least one backpack and they are widely used on a daily basis. And installing a GPS tracking system in a backpack would be

easy, and it would be something that virtually all children will have with them at all times. The more he looked at the backpacks, the more he realized that they could quite easily be turned into a technology hub. In fact, the backpack is ideal, since it is spacious, it has shoulder straps, in some cases wheels, and it is extremely easy for carrying around. Moreover, in today’s ever-changing environment, business professionals are also carrying backpacks, because the briefcases are no longer adequate. Every professional needs a spacious asset where he/she would keep the multitude of electronic components, such as a notebook computer, iPad or Android tablet, iPhone, Android Phone, charging devices etc. And the briefcase can no-longer hold the basic tools that business professionals are carrying each day, thus an increasing number of men and women are looking for a better way to carry their tools – and backpack sales have been skyrocketing. So, we’ve decided to create the backpack as a tool which will be useful for everyone from age eight to eighty and we incorporated amazing new technologies, such as Wi-Fi, multiple USB ports, powerful battery, superior stereo system, wireless recharging pad, solar panel charging, proximity locator and much more. Grammy Award-winning Canadian singer Celine Dion and her manager husband, René Angélil, built their dream vacation home on Jupiter Island, Florida in 2010. The location offered the privacy the hard working couple wanted to relax with their children and friends and they designed an estate around a series of water features and outdoor sports activities that, along with pristine beachfront, took full advantage of the warm Florida sunshine and Atlantic Ocean breezes. But even for celebrities who seem to have achieved it all, life can throw curve balls. Though René had successfully fully recovered from a bout of throat cancer in 1999, it reoccurred in 2013, when he had surgery for another malignant throat tumor. Dion announced in 2014 that she would suspend her performances indefinitely due to her husband’s worsening health. In August of 2015, she resumed her Las Vegas residency at Caesar’s Palace, but lost René to cancer in January 2016 and her brother only two days later. The couple and their three children had made the Las Vegas bedroom community of Henderson their home while Dion was performing at Caesar’s Palace. She returned to the stage on February 23rd for the first time since René’s death and paid tribute to his memory and their life together in her first performance. Their Bahamian-inspired Florida oceanfront estate was first put up for sale in RAINE MAGAZINE - VOLUME 27

2013, the year that René was re-diagnosed, for $72.5 million. Over a period of time with no buyer interest, the price was cut to $62.5 million. Among many five-star features, the 5.5-acre beachfront property’s #1 centerpiece is the 500,000 gallon water park highlighted by a slow current lazy river connecting two pools, bridges and a twisting waterslide. There is also another pool located beachside. The twostory, 10,000-square-foot main residence has five bedrooms with a second-level wraparound terrace with ocean views and multiple main level terraces. The luxurious master suite walkin closet has automated carousels for quick access to shoes and clothing at the touch of a finger. The open plan main level is light and airy in keeping with the subtropical climate. There are also two separate four-bedroom guest houses, tennis house, simulated golf range, pool house and beach house. Celine’s Jupiter neighbors include Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods and Palm Beach is just a few miles down the road. Now settled in Henderson, Nevada at least until the end of her Caesar’s Palace residency in 2019, Celine has stepped up her effort to sell her Jupiter Island, Florida private resort estate by engaging a new brokerage and lowering the asking price. Fenton Lang Bruner & Associates currently holds the listing, which is now priced at $45.5 million. 111

It wasn’t until the onset of filming Hannah Montana in 2007 that the Cyrus family moved from their 500acre Tennessee farm to a new home in Toluca Lake, California - an easy commute to the Disney studios for Billy and Miley. The home was where Miley spent most of her teen years and after the series was over, the family moved back to Tennessee and the home was placed in a trust for her. In 2015, she put it on the market for $5.995 million. Tuscan style, gated and tucked privately away inside walls and thick tropical vegetation, the home is accessed by a long-bricked drive bordered by trees and thick hedging opening onto a brick motor court. Designed and built in 2007 by architect Bob Easton, its appearance with patches of vinecovered walls, red-barrel tile roof and Old World ambiance belies its youth. At 8,700 square feet on just under an acre, it houses six bedrooms, seven baths, grand entry foyer with curved staircase accented with wrought iron and formal rooms that open to views of the pool and lush landscaping. There is a large chef’s kitchen with ogee-edged granite countertops, family room, home theatre and Billy’s former guitar display room. Built on two levels, the master suite has a rooftop terrace with fireplace and large walk-in dressing rooms. Both inside and outside are multiple venues with fireplaces for lounging and entertaining both covered and open air. A state-of-the-art security system and cameras protect all areas of the property. The listing agent is happy to report that the home was sold at the full $5.995 million asking price. 114

What follows is an engrossing conversation and a deeply philosophical exploration of the big questions of life, love, human destiny, and God. In God: An Autobiography, as Told To a Philosopher, Dr. Martin embarks on a fascinating journey, and through a series of stunning revelations, he discovers that God is not limited to one culture or religion. Each belief system is a

different piece of the overall puzzle, one aspect of the journey to spiritual fulfillment. “Making a decision to believe is not quite the same as accepting that belief in your bones. It is more like the first step toward believing,” says Dr. Martin. “Previously, the religious story was of a single tradition, and God’s revelations ended long ago. Now, there is a further dimension—the God of all traditions and all worlds—who is live and present and available to us still.” With God: An Autobiography, Dr. Martin aims to tear down the old walls between religions by revealing to readers his eye-opening conversations with God -- and create a spiritual awakening for all.

DEADPOOL: Hugh Scott Please credit the images to Bobby Quillard

Best known for his role as David Cunningham in the hit movie Deadpool, Hugh Scott is a multi-talented actor with roles in hit TV shows Big Love, The Closer, NCIS and films Prom Night and Runner Runner. His career started in commercials working with notable brands like Pepsi, Volkswagen and Microsoft. Scott is also an accomplished voice-over actor and was the voice behind restaurant chain Del Taco. Scott is also an advocate for higher education and safety for at-risk youth lending his support to organizations like Hillsides charity organization. It’s a foundation that provides high quality care to young people in need so that they will thrive as contributing members of society. Not to be outdone by his current success, we are sure to see more of Hugh Scott in the future! RAINE: As a non-fan to the Deadpool franchise, how did you prepare for your role as the Worm? SCOTT: One of the things I love about acting is that every role is different, and every role requires a somewhat different approach. Not having been exposed to Deadpool very much outside of the Wolverine movie, getting

cast as Worm gave me a chance to really dive into the material and do some research. I hesitate to call it research because it was really fun. I love the specific and hilarious comedic style, and I love how conflicted Wade Wilson is compared to other Marvel characters, so I became a fan instantly. My scenes with Ryan speak a lot about but what friendship means during a dark time in one’s life, so I really approached the scene work from that perspective. RAINE: There are plenty of movies in the superhero genre. What makes Deadpool different from similar movies? SCOTT: Deadpool doesn’t want to be a superhero. And he is definitely not cut from the same cloth as other superhero’s. He has a bent moral compass and he obviously has a pretty irreverent sense of humor. I know director Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds worked very hard with the writers (Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick) to get the very specific tone of Deadpool right. Based on the fan response, I think it is safe to say they did an awesome job.

“In my view, experience is the best teacher for an actor.”

RAINE: As a kid you were in a near fatal car accident. How have you used that incident as a driving force in your life? SCOTT: When I was five, I was run over by a car and had to spend several months in the hospital. I had several injuries and had to learn to walk all over again. The first thing I remember about the accident is waking up in the hospital after an initial surgery, and the doctor telling me what a lucky person I was just to wake up. It’s an easy thing to forget as I move through my adult life, but I constantly remind myself of that doctor’s words. I believe that despite what happens, life is a gift and it is something I strive to take full ownership of. RAINE: How did you get your first big break as an actor? SCOTT: I view my character as consisting of lots of little breaks, rather than a single big break. I was scouted for commercials while I was in college and was able to earn my SAG card by working in commercials. Shortly after graduating, I booked a Guest Star role on CSI: NY and that role led to several more opportunities in hour long dramas. I also count getting Deadpool as a big break! I’m pretty grateful for every opportunity I get to act, and I look forward to my next one. RAINE: Aside from acting you also do voice-over work. What was it like being the voice behind the food chain Del-Taco? SCOTT: Working for Del Taco was a great gig. They are based here in southern California and definitely a part of the local culture. The job included internet, On-Camera TV commercials and Voice-Over. Voice-Over work is very competitive and is a highly technical type of performance, but I really love doing it. I was thrilled to be part of that campaign.

RAINE: What are some of the other projects that you are working on in 2016? SCOTT: I can’t talk too much about it, but I just shot a small but very dramatic role in the Suicide Squad reshoots. Working with David Ayer was a dream come true. I’ve been a fan of his since he wrote Training Day and I’ve enjoyed his rise as one of the best directors of the day. RAINE: How do you maintain a balance between your work and life? SCOTT: Being an actor is definitely a roller coaster ride. I am constantly in and out of work and I never know where my next opportunity is going to come from. For me, the challenge remains to stay self-disciplined and focused so that I am ready to go to work when the phone rings. My girlfriend is also a working actor and we support each other and help each other with auditions and in preparing for jobs. RAINE: Words of wisdom for other aspiring actors? SCOTT: Acting is such an intangible thing that it makes it hard to give advice about. Something I really believe about acting is that you learn by doing it. You can read a book about acting, or listen to a lecture or even watch a Robert DeNiro movie marathon and you’ll definitely learn something. But in my view, experience is the best teacher for an actor. Just like you can’t learn to swim on dry land—you can’t really learn to act by thinking about it or talking about it. My (very humble) advice to any aspiring actor is to find and create opportunities to act. Even the smallest opportunities offer the same experience of immersing yourself and being present in the context of a dramatic scene.

Lana Condor Lana Condor is an actress on the rise whose alluring, pure, and unfiltered talent captivates audiences. The Can Tho, Vietnam native was destined to be a performer, beginning at an early age by channeling her creativity and self-expression through dance. From Chicago to New York to Los Angeles, Condor fine-tuned her craft in several prestigious institutions, including The Alvin Alley American Dance Theatre, The Los Angeles Ballet, the Notre Dame Academy and the Yale Summer Conservatory for Actors. With such a background, the stage is set for Condor to take the entertainment industry by storm. In 2016, she will make her feature film debut in the highly anticipated Twentieth Century Fox Film X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Condor will star as Jubilation Lee, aka Jubilee, alongside Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, and Rose Byrne. The film is the sequel to X MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. Sharing the screen with some of Hollywood’s biggest award-winning stars is a huge accomplishment for the budding starlet, an accomplishment that is undoubtedly deserved. Condor is already making a name for herself, as evidenced by her ever growing social media presence of 12.8k Instagram followers. Condor could certainly be Hollywood’s next acting prodigy, and is one to watch.

RAINE: From an early age your love for the arts flourished allowing you to attend some of the most prestigious performing art schools. Can you describe your experience at these institutions and how they helped fine tune your craft as an actress today? CONDOR: I went to Professional Performing Arts School in New York City for my freshman year in high school. It was an amazing experience, one that played an important role in my formation as a performer by providing a really stable foundation. I was a dance major, so I did all of my academics in the morning, and then all my performing arts classes (about six hours of dance and rehearsal a day) in the afternoon. It was physically and emotionally demanding, but it taught me great stamina and endurance plus the importance of the ensemble and teamwork. All of which is extremely important for actors, although I would say I’ve barely scratched the surface of “finetuning” my craft. That’s going to take a lifetime. *laughs* RAINE: Dance is known as an unspoken art form, it challenges your mind, body and soul. How are you able to keep all three of these ideas in sink? CONDOR: Oh my goodness that’s a hard question! I would say my answer, in so many words, is exercise. One thing that really helps me with balance, not

just in acting but in life, is hot yoga. I do a hot yoga sculpt class that is basically Bikram yoga on steroids. *laughs*. It is a yoga class with cardio, weights, and strength posture training, all in a 108 degree room! It physically challenges your body, and mentally challenges your mind. Your mind is stronger than your body, so when you feel your body giving out under the pressure and rigor of the class, that’s when the real challenges set in with how long you can mentally still push yourself to be your best self. It’s so hard! But it helps me feel balanced and centered. I can bring what I work on in class to life. RAINE: Name your top five lifestyle hacks you pride yourself on. CONDOR: • EXERCISE (lol again.) I think you’re seeing a pattern... If anything, get a

• • • •

little sweat going and those endorphins will start pumping. Be kind. Kind is in, it is refreshing! It is a must. Don’t gossip. This world is too small for that! Eat well. What you put in your body will really show on the outside. Find someone who will make you laugh even when you’re having a day

that makes you want to turn into a bird and fly away from all your troubles. *laughs*.

RAINE: Effortless beauty, health and wellness are key components as a performing artist. Who are the beauty gurus you look to when keeping your outer beauty matching your inner glow? CONDOR:

• Shay Mitchell from “Pretty Little Liars.” Gosh she is just so cool... She’s really into exercising and feeling good about the inside, which transposes to the out! She also eats a ton... like me! • My mom. She is like medicine to me, she always knows what to say to make any inner turmoil go away. • Anton Khachaturian. He’s my makeup artist on photo shoots. *laughs* I swear to you, he’s magical! Here’s the thing, he makes me look like

Photographer: Isaac Sterling Photography; Hair: J Michael; Make-Up: Anton Khachaturian for Exclusive Artists; Management using MAC Cosmetics; Stylist: Wayman and Micah

Beyonce, as well as FEEL like Beyonce! He makes me feel so confident and knows exactly what to say to make me feel like the most special little lady!

RAINE: You will make your feature film debut in XMEN: APOCALYPSE as Jubilee. How did this role come about and what was the casting process like? CONDOR: I received the audition breakdown from my former manager for XMen last January. It was one of my very first professional auditions so I was extremely new at auditioning and essentially everything that goes along with it. I auditioned and then did a couple callbacks. I waited for about two months to really hear anything else about it. Those two months I was dying. *laughs* I remember every night visualizing what it could be like if I got the role. So when I finally got the call saying I had booked, I was absolutely ecstatic as you could imagine. RAINE: In the movie your star alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names. What was your experience like working with such a talented cast of artists? CONDOR: It was surreal and still is. I remember going into hair and makeup one of the first days I worked, and seeing a picture of my face (they take photos of your hair and makeup so they can replicate it throughout the duration of the shoot) up next to Rose Byrne’s picture and freaking out just because my picture was on the same wall as hers! So when I actually met her, it was even more thrilling! I learned a lot from everyone. Some of the cast gave me little tips, others I just learned from by watching them and studying how they conduct themselves on set. I am so lucky. RAINE: Word to the wise: What advice would you lend to a budding actor/actress on the rise? CONDOR: Take as many classes as you can. Begin training before you begin auditioning, so the first time you’re in a room with a casting director you can blow them off the roof. Training would be: classes, reading books, watching how people interact with each other, sharpen your wit with improv classes or standup openmic comedy hours... Anything that stimulates your creative side. Don’t let others discourage you, just keep going. It can be hard, but it’s true.

Zameer Rizvi T

he ‘American Dream’ is the ideal of equal

opportunity for every citizen and the right to

achieve success and prosperity through hard work,

determination, and initiative in the United States of America. This ideal is believed and lived to this day by

both foreigners and locals alike; “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.” Zameer Rizvi certainly has his

eyes on the prize, striving to obtain this ‘American Dream’

as the music industry’s Fresh Face. The multifaceted

singer-songwriter is a heartthrob with the voice of an angel whom owns his own tech business, is an avid

Yogi, and enjoys the pleasurable pursuits of cooking organic food. His true passion, however, lies in the world of music where the stage is his guiding light towards a

life of happiness and fulfillment. Originally from Pakistan, Zameer and his family moved to Saudi Arabia, where access to music was limited. He often had his brother

smuggle music into the country for him. Zameer’s early

musical influences centered around 80s metal bands, such as Poison, Motley Crue and Guns N Roses. In 1995,

Zameer emigrated to Canada, and by 2005, a decade

after his arrival, became a rising star in Toronto’s music scene. His debut single, Win or Defeat became the theme song to the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games and his debut

album From Under the Bleachers hit #73 on the Hot 100

Charts in Canada with the single Glory of Love. In 2015, in pursuit f the American Dream, Zameer relocated to Los Angeles, California to prepare for the debut of his new

album HER in November 2016. The album is already

gaining rave reviews with its melodic, inspirational, and sincere sound. Zameer Rizvi is an emerging artist in the music industry and could be its next big thing.

“Music gives me the confidence to take risks, and the inspiration to find beauty in things. It’s this combination of inspiration and confidence that allows me to take up several passions.”

/ RAINE: What has been an embarrassing moment on stage? ZAMEER: My most embarrassing moment was performing at a televised live award show, where I had 4 minutes to sing a song, and my guitar didn’t work! Typically this situation wouldn’t be too embarrassing, I could just fix my guitar and start performing. But the show followed a strict schedule, and I had 4 minutes to get on and sing my song. The show also afforded me an 8 person tech crew to specifically ensure everything went smoothly. Me and the crew tested the guitar set up several times to ensure everything was perfect. Realizing on stage that my guitar wasn’t working was quite the shock! Imagine watching a live televised 4 minute performance, like the Grammy’s, and now imagine the performers guitar not working… haha! I had to resort to putting my guitar down and dancing around like Britney Spears. Embarrassing to the MAX. RAINE: If you could not be a singer what else would you do with your life? ZAMEER: If I wasn’t a singer, I’d be some sort of entrepreneur. I’m a pretty whimsical dude. Most of what I do is based on a whim. For this reason, traditional life plans like become a doctor or lawyer didn’t work for me. Those required too much planning, and little whimsical deviation. So if I didn’t have music, I’d partake in some other volatile vocation that involved high risk of failure. Maybe start a bunch of tech startups? I don’t know. RAINE: Do you have a ritual that you perform before a big performance to get psyched up for being on stage? ZAMEER: Yes, I breath deep 10 times to warm up my lungs. I make burp sounds to warm up my diaphragm. I stick my tongue out and belt out very loud notes to warm up my throat, like an opera singer. I remove all worldly thoughts from my brain to warm up my soul. I prepare a lukewarm concoction of water, lemon and honey to moisturize my vocal chords. I rest and revel in absolute silence to warm up my ears. I close my eyes and think of my happy place to trigger positive energy. If it’s cold, I do push-ups to warm up my fingers so I can rip it on the guitar. RAINE: Would you say music is your passion? What other passions do you have aside from music? ZAMEER: I would say music is the very essence of my soul. My soul fuels many passions. Music saves me, like Jesus saves others. Music gives me the confidence to take risks, and the inspiration to find beauty in things. It’s this combination of inspiration and confidence that allows me to take up several passions. I’m passionate about music production, I’m passionate about writing software to distribute music, I’m passionate about studying the mathematics of music, I’m passionate about high quality capacitors for audio speakers so I can hear better music. But music allows me to be passionate about things outside of music. For example, I’m passionate about mind body and soul, I’m passionate about nature, I’m passionate about charity, I’m passionate about family and friends. Music loves and nurtures me like a mother nurtures her child. RAINE: How did growing up in Saudi Arabia and your limited access to music influence you as an artist? ZAMEER: The selection of music in Saudi Arabia was pretty sad. In fact, Saudi Arabia’s culture is so centered around radical Islam, that it’s hard to find any quality cultural artifacts. Radical Islam doesn’t permit music. Music is unholy unless its religion hymns. Growing up in a country devoid of any culture is limiting and dangerous. Luckily, my parents were well travelled professionals with exposure to the best of the worlds cultures. They actively exposed us to many rich cultures around the world. They were both university professors, so as a family we always had a few months off every year. During these months off my parents took us around the world which exposed us to rich cultures and good music. Growing up in a sterile culture such as Saudi Arabia makes one crave good artistry. So while Saudi Arabia starved me of good music, it made me feast like a lion when I heard something good. Lucky for me, I was exposed to the world’s music.

Photographer Janick Laurent

RAINE: Your single “Win or Defeat” was the theme song to the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. Talk about the moment when you first found out. What was going through your head at that time? ZAMEER: When I first started singing and writing songs, I’d feel like a rock star when my mom and dad watched me perform. I’d feel like a pimp when my friends wanted to buy the CDs I burnt at home. As an artist, the first time you connect with people feels like an epiphany. Its euphoric. To be able to transport a feeling through air and deliver it to a person beside you is magical. Connecting with others is the essence of an artist. So when I got a call from the Paralympic Committee saying the wanted to license my song for the 2010 Olympic Games, I felt that same euphoric feeling I felt as a kid when my friends gave me 2 bucks for a CD. Except, now my music was connecting with the world, with millions of people, on an international stage. That feeling of validation and euphoria only happens a few times in an artist’s life. RAINE: Talk about your inspiration for your upcoming albumHER. ZAMEER: I write music to transport feelings from one human to another. These feelings come from strong emotional experiences in my life. One of the strongest emotional experiences I’ve had are love, affinity and desire for beautiful women. Feelings of love are easy to transmit among humans because we all experience them. If songs were foods, then songs about love would be pizza. Everyone has had pizza. Everyone loves pizza. Everyone understands pizza. Out of the 100 songs I have written to date, around fifty percent are about pizza, aka women. I took my favorite of these 10 songs about love and put them on my album HER. The album is about love, loss, passion, desire, tragedy and respect for all of the women in my life. And the album doesn’t end only at humans, I also have a song about my female pet! RAINE: You will be featured in the Health & Beauty Issue of Raine Magazine. What are some of your health/beauty hacks to stay in good health? ZAMEER: Health is my biggest priority in life. With good health, I am unstoppable. I believe every human should sweat for at least 30 minutes per day. I practice this myself on a daily basis. Like our minds, our bodies also needs to be nurtured, challenged and inspired. I nurture my body by eating organic, healthy foods. I challenge my body by pushing it to new limits every day. I inspire my body by looking deep within through yoga and exploring nature. I also like using natural products to promote beauty. At the risk of being judged, I admit to regularly cleanse my skin with facials, and wear cucumber eye serum daily. I think men need to get in touch with their femininity. Looking after our skin, hair and physique is for all humans, not just for women. I man up when it comes to health and beauty. RAINE MAGAZINE - VOLUME 27

Be of service to your friends, to your community, to people you don’t know, to your audience, to the task at hand and to your loved ones.

/ RAINE: Would you call this your most memorable role to date? POHLY: Many of the roles I’ve played are memorable to me on a personal level but this is certainly my most high profile job to date and I’m so excited to be a part of it. So, yes probably the most memorable to the general public but some characters like Caliban and Lady Macbeth--characters I played for weeks and weeks on end in theater performances--have been quite formative for me as an actor. I feel connected to each of my characters in a special way. Including Pepper! RAINE: Acting can be a tough business, was there ever a moment that you thought about giving up, and what helped to change your mind? POHLY: Like many actors I’ve had mentors and teachers say ‘if there is anything else you can do, do it.’ And it’s true: this is a very tough business and if you are not 100% sure you want to do it you may be very unhappy. There is a lot of disappointment and rejection. You are asked to be raw and open but also tough and guarded. It’s a crazy balancing act.

Jessica Pohly he entertainment industry isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s for those willing to go the extra mile, break out from their comfort zone, and push their limits. Jessica Pohly embodies that drive. From former comedian to film and television actress, her involvement in philanthropic work such as with the UCLA Center for Prehospital Care, and with animal rights, has led her to wear many hats, which she has accomplished effortlessly. Pohly’s background is deeply rooted in theatre. She gained a liberal arts degree in Art History and studied with The Atlantic Theater Acting School in New York City, toured with a Shakespeare Company, and ended up in Paris working as a Corporeal Mime. Yes, a mime! Having a brave heart and being dedicated ultimately paid off for Pohly as she emerged as a guest-star in several television roles including Stalker, Rake, Modern Family, Super Fun Night, Bella and the Bulldogs, and Welcome to the Family. In her most prominent role to date, Pohly will co-star opposite Paul Reubens and Joe Manganiello in Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday, premiering on Netflix in March. Pohly stars as Pepper, the head of an all-girl gang of bank robbers. Jessica Pohly has claimed the noteworthy position as “TV’s Fresh Face” and the “One to Watch”. We can’t wait to see what lies ahead for this budding starlet. RAINE: We are excited to see you in Pee Wee’s Big Holiday as “Pepper,” what was it like working alongside Paul Reubens? POHLY: It was pretty rad. Paul is incredibly kind and generous. He went out of his way to help me get my footing on set because I was sort of the newcomer of the bunch. He is an extraordinary talent and it was a privilege to watch him work. I would go to set on days I wasn’t working just to watch him create amazing Pee Wee moments. And I have to admit it was surreal at times to find myself in scenes with him because he has been a comedic hero of mine for as long as I can remember. I grew up watching Pee Wee’s Playhouse with my Dad so Pee Wee was always sort of part of our family.

RAINE: Talk about the creative process that you went through, to develop your character? POHLY: I immediately got a strong sense of Pepper just from the page. Reading the script I felt like I could see her clearly because the writing was so fantastic. I might say this is a character I approached from the outside in. From the first audition I had a specific idea of how I wanted her to look and sound. Her cadence of speech and posture are very different than my own so I started there and built inward. It’s not how I always create character but sometimes the task at hand tells you where to start. In general we all drew from the vibe of the women in Faster Pussycat Kill Kill which is one of Paul’s favorite movies and was a point of inspiration for our gang of bank robbers when he was writing. RAINE: What is one piece of advice you have received, that has served you best over the years? POHLY: Be of service through your work. Be of service to your friends, to your community, to people you don’t know, to your audience, to the task at hand and to your loved ones. This business can create a scary level of narcissism and navel gazing and for me it is very important to strive to be of service through my work. I find a lot of relief and purpose in that idea. It reminds me that I’m only ever one small part of a much bigger picture.

Personally, I recommit to this business every single day. I’ve found it’s important for me to stay current with the pursuit and present with my passion in this way. When I start to take any part of it for granted or forget what I have to be grateful for, it negatively affects my work and I can’t have that. So, the second I don’t want to do this anymore I won’t. Thus far it is all I have ever wanted to do and every opportunity I get to do it is a joy.

Liz Belilovskaya is a rising mixed-media artist and illustrator based in New York. Born in Russia, but living in the Big Apple since she was 7 years old, the multi-cultural transplant embraced the diversity of the city. Firmly believing that an individual is the sum of his or her parts, Liz cultivated interests in art, history, architecture, and the life sciences. Her artwork is a visual expression of her internal narrative about these very subjects.

“When I draw, I like to have a central

theme, with a lot of patterns and detail around it. So, if the viewer gets close to the canvas, he or she can find micros-clusters of design integrated with the main picture.” Though a general examination of her art reveals that she does have a “type”, Liz prefers to concentrate on “mixing it up”, dabbling in everything from traditional to contemporary art.

Not one to follow the crowd, Liz paved

her own way into New York’s exclusive art scene. “Being an artist is incredibly expensive, while promoting and selling yourself is difficult and time consuming. Furthermore, galleries, agents, or other services can take anywhere between 20-50% of the profit once you do manage to sell something, so, an artist crafting his or her own brand must think outside the box.”

One of the ways Liz attracts traffic to

her site is by creating a license-free photography section on her professional website, www. LizPublika.com. “Anyone can download and use my photography for their personal or professional needs, as long as I receive credit. But my paintings, drawings, illustrations, and accessories are my creative property.”

Liz also strives to partner with interior

design companies that may be interested in collaborating together. “I figure if people want beautiful art on their walls, I may as well go to the experts who know a thing or two about decor and see where my work may be of service.” www.Lizpublika.com
