4th June 2012 -11:30am St Ann’s School Field, View Road Hello everyone and thanks for picking up your FREE copy of the Rainhill Gala programme. It’s great to see how much support we have again this year and we hope that you will be able to join us on Monday 4th June for a good old fashioned day of fun! It’s been an exciting year for us with The Rainhill Gala being awarded Charity status at long last and our sincere thanks must go to Geoff Slater for helping us through the whole process. Is it really that important? Well we hope so as it makes it easier for businesses to support us and of course we can keep more of the money we raise throughout the year for local good causes in and around Rainhill. Once again the donations made to good causes from the funds raised last year were astounding, a total of over £6,000 in fact. Add this to the good causes we have supported since the Gala began in 2006 and we are looking at a grand total in excess of £20,000. So, what’s coming up this year? Sadly there will be no It’s A Knockout this year although I think that I’m right in saying that everyone has thoroughly enjoyed the popular competition over the last 4 years. Instead we are going to have a fun packed arena with something for everyone including music, dancing, displays and a GIANT ZUMBA session. This is of course in addition to the dozens of stalls and attractions, beer tent, loads of different food to try, a real steam train as well as the biggest and best funfair we have ever seen! And if that doesn’t grab you, see the Clan Wallace pipe band on the way into the event, have your picture taken with birds of prey or why not get up close and personal to some of Rainhill’s non-human residents (spiders, snakes and lizards I mean!). Once again I would like to thank you for supporting the Gala in 2012 and I would also like to thank the hard working committee who make it all possible, you wouldn’t believe how much work goes into organising this event. We would of course like to hear from you, especially if you can spare a little free time, contact us through our Facebook page or email steve@rainhillgala.co.uk. I look forward to seeing you on 4th June. Steve Clarke, Chairman.

Who are Rainhill Gala? We’ve been described in many ways, as a committee, a group of individuals with a common interest and also a gang. All accurate descriptions (although none of us own a hoodie) and whatever you want to call us one thing that we do is have fun! The Gala in its current form was resurrected in 2006 as a fun day at the Eckies, but as the organisation grew we moved to our new date in May and our new home at St Ann’s in 2009. More and more organisations and individuals have joined including the Rotary Club, Parish Council, Model Railway Club and Willowbrook Hospice. But most of all the biggest recognition has to go to three fantastic ladies at the Bridge Barbers. Ann, Becci and Julie work really hard all year round and its fair to say that the Gala wouldn’t be what it is today without them! The one thing that we all have in common is that we’re all volunteers and we love it! A lot of emphasis is placed on the donations made to charity and local groups in and around the village however our greatest emphasis is on bringing the community together, We aim through our events to provide a platform for local groups and organisations to promote themselves within the community and also to bring an enhanced community spirit to Rainhill. Of course the funds we raise are all put to really good use and we were delighted to donate over £6,000 in 2011 to local groups. (See pages 18 & 19 for more details) We’re all looking forward to this year’s Gala and would love to have you on board. If you can help see our article on page 46 for more details. Pictured below at the 2011 Launch of Rocket Fuel outside the Coach & Horses is the Committee along with local landlords Phil Seddon & Nick McKernon. We’d like to say thanks to all our sponsors and advertisers in the programme which help fund the Gala in advance and means that more of the money we raise on the day can go towards helping local good causes. All of the advertisers in the programme have a local connection, so please support them and mention you saw their ad here!

Lucky numbers come in for Ros Avid readers of the Rainhill Gala programme will remember the Suduko competition in last year’s edition. In December the winning entry was pulled out of the hat and Ros Tigwell (pictured) was declared the winner. Ros receives a Rainhill Gala sustainable shopper and a bottle of champagne and will officially open this year’s Gala along with the Mayor of St Helens and Chair of Rainhill Parish Council. Congratulations to Ros. Look out for this year’s competition available in outlets across the village. The 2012 Quiz Sheet is just £1 and is great fun for all the family. Every penny will go into the Gala pot so go on and give it a try!

Our special thanks to Lily from The Village Shop in Dane Court for writing this lovely poem especially for the 2012 Rainhill Gala. You may have noticed some of her other work around the village in some of the shops encouraging local people to support their local shops. Why not pop down to The Village Shop, formally Nicola’s Spend & Save to see some of the low prices on everyday goods? From toiletries to housewares, The Village Shop has a wide range always in stock. And if there’s something you don’t see, why not ask Lily if she can get it in, especially for you!

Rainhill Railway & Heritage Society The Rainhill Trials Museum, run by Rainhill Railway and Heritage Society has had a facelift, courtesy of NorthernRail. Visitors to the Library will have seen that the coach is now painted in the spectacular yellow and black livery of the original Liverpool and Manchester Railway, 1830 style. The interior has also received some attention, as well as the Lottery funded refurbishment of a couple of years ago. Our companion website (www.rainhilltrials.com) is now sponsored by Rainhill Gala. The Society is grateful to the Gala committee for their support.

Get fit and stay fit with Ellen ZUMBA style Ellen graduated from Lancaster University in 2008 with a BSc honours degree in Psychology and although she loves her subject, her passion has always been in dance. She started attending dance classes at the age of 7 and continued to study this up until University. Whilst at University she became President of the University Dance Team combining her studies with dance training, teaching and performances every week. After graduating from Lancaster University, Ellen worked abroad as part of a dance team touring hotels across Cyprus and Greek holiday resorts performing in up to six shows per week. On returning to England, Ellen was appointed as Community Dance Co-ordinator at Rainhill High School Media Arts College and now teaches dance to pupils as young as 4 years old up to ladies who are 94 years old in a retirement home. Alongside dancing, fitness has always been a huge part of Ellen’s life. After trying her first Zumba fitness session, she became hooked and decided to train as an instructor in 2011. Since then, she has gained licences to teach Zumba Basics 2, Zumba Toning, Zumbatomic (Kids Zumba) and Zumba Gold. She offers a range of fun, enjoyable classes for all ages and abilities in the local and surrounding areas. She believes that dance and fitness are something which can be enjoyed by a person of any age and would like to bring this enjoyment to all of the people in her classes. She claims that “Working out has never been so much fun. The atmosphere in a Zumba class is amazing. You don’t need to be able to dance....just come along and join the party atmosphere. You’ll have a blast!”

2012 programme competition To celebrate the 2012 Olympics, this year we asked Key Stage 2 pupils in Rainhill to enter our competition to design a suitably themed poster to be used for the front cover of this programme. The entries were once again all fantastic and the judging panel had a hard time as always choosing a winner but there was one entry that stood out and congratulations go to Leah Ingleton of class 6H at St Ann’s School who wins a family Safari Park pass as well as a funfair wristband to the 2012 Gala. Leah’s design not only captures the Olympic theme but details some of the fun and exciting things happening at this year’s Gala. Leah is pictured with Julie Green, Rainhill Gala’s Cultural Director holding one of the first exclusive sustainable shoppers which will be on sale soon in outlets throughout the village. (See page 37 for more details of the exclusive Rainhill Gala bag) Well done to Leah as well as everyone who entered the competition this year. All the entries were fantastic! Look out for the entry forms in your school next year for your chance to enter and have your design featured on the front cover of the 2013 Rainhill Gala programme.

Rainhill Rotary Club The village Recreation Club was the venue for Rotary’s 9th Beer Festival in November 2011. What a fantastic success it was with customers enjoying a wide variety of beers and with many charities becoming recipients of the well-earned profits of £13,000. Over 1600 ladies and gentlemen attended the event during the three days and we thank them sincerely for their support. The 2012 Festival is planned for November 8th, 9th and 10th at the same venue and again under canvas. Our target for this year is to have 100 different beers available supported by a wide range of lagers, ciders and wines. The event relies heavily on the generosity of our sponsors. They are invited to contribute £100. For this donation the sponsor receives 5 freeentry tickets, advertising on our Festival website and also in the professionally produced programme, with their name and company against a particular beer. Many of our sponsors have been with us for all ten years. They continue to be most generous and we thank them. Anyone who might be interested in joining Rainhill Rotary Club with its 48 members or supporting our Beer Festival in any way, please contact Andrew on 07767 693800 or Ray on 07957 585867. Radio City and Merseyside both warned drivers of traffic delays in Warrington Road on Christmas Eve last year. Cause of associated traffic jams was the breakdown of Santa’s sleigh near the village traffic lights. In a three hour period Rainhill Rotary Club collected £2500 !! Incredible generosity. Rotary Beer Festival 2012 at Rainhill Recreation Club on 8th, 9th and 10th November.

Rainhill Gala 2011 The Rainhill Gala 2011 was a fantastic event despite the weather with an estimated 3,000 visitors turning out to get wet. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day and together over £6,000 was raised for charities and local good causes in our area. There were many stalls at the Gala who were raising funds for their own good causes, so add this to the funds raised directly by Rainhill Gala and the estimated total raised for charities and local causes was WELL IN EXCESS OF £10,000!
There were many donations made as a result of the 2011 Gala, here are some of them: £3,050 went to Willowbrook Hospice to help towards building maintenance costs. The cheque was presented to Nicky Saunders from Willowbrook by the Rainhill Gala committee (pictured right).
Blackbrook Royals - £500
Blackbrook Royals provide rugby training for young people in Blackbrook and are aiming to raise enough funds to take the team to America in 2012. The Club have been raising money for this trip for the last two years through events such as charity bag packing. We have been very fortunate at Rainhill Gala to have the team helping us on the day and we were delighted to present them with a cheque for £500 towards their fundraising efforts. Cheque presented by Rainhill Gala’s Diane Davies
Rainhill Model Railway Club - £550 Rainhill Model Railway Club, like many others, have been forced to relocate as a result of the closure of Prescot Leisure Centre. The Club has now made its new home in the Museum of Road Transport in St Helens and we were delighted to award the Club £550 to help with their moving costs. Cheque presented by Rainhill Gala’s Sharon Roberts
Rainhill Rocket JFC - £200
20
We all know how important sport is for our young people and we hope that the donation of £200 to the Club will help them along their way. The Club hold many fundraising events throughout the year, mostly at the Rocket pub. This is the second time we have supported the Rocket JFC over the last few years and we wish them the best of luck. Cheque presented by Rainhill Gala’s Sylvia King
Where did the money go? Rainhill United - £200
Once again we are supporting local sports for young people and have awarded £200 to Rainhill United JFC. The Club, run by local people in Rainhill, provides a platform for young people to keep active and enjoy regular competitive football not only in Rainhill but also at the many away fixtures. We hope that the £200 will help them this year. Cheque presented by Rainhill Gala’s Carol Johnson.
Rainhill Musical Theatre Company - £400 Rainhill Musical Theatre Company hold regular performances at Rainhill Village Hall and we were delighted to award £400 towards the cost of a state of the art sound system. Last year we awarded them £200 for assistance with performances but this year we hope that the £400 will go towards a long term investment which will be used for many years. Receiving the cheque from Rainhill Gala’s Zoe & Taya Strange is Rainhill Musical Theatre Company Chairman Maria Heaton and President, Councillor Julia Doyle in the presence of Councillor Tom Hargreaves, Mayor of St Helens.
Rainhill Senior Citizens Lunch Club - £500
For the 3rd year running the Rainhill Senior Citizens Luncheon Club have been awarded £500 to allow them to continue their vital work in the local community. Faced with closure due to a lack of funds, they continue to offer a good value home cooked lunch to many of our seniors every week. The donation will once again pay the rent at the Village Hall for the next 12 months. Cheque presented to Eunice & Betty by Rainhill Gala’s Nicola Gallagher.
St Ann’s CE Primary School - £500 Last but not least we once again supported St Ann’s with a cheque for £500. This donation, made jointly as a thank you from the Gala for allowing us to use their field, will help towards the production costs of a DVD telling the story of St Ann’s School. Anyone who has passed the School in View Road in the last 12 months cannot have helped but notice the development work that has been carried out, including new offices and classrooms. Presenting the cheque on behalf of Rainhill Gala is Treasurer Colin Oldfield and our youngest member Taya

Our Special Thanks It takes lots of help to organise the Gala and every year we present Special Awards of thanks to individuals and organisations whose contributions have been invaluable. During the presentations last year we were delighted to award Gala Plaques to Arriva NW and Canlines, two different organisations who have contributed in such a big way. Arriva NW joined us last year and have been very generous by providing an open top bus for the Park ‘n Ride from Rainhill High School on Gala day. Not only do Arriva provide the bus, driver and fuel, but also go out of their way and collect the vehicle from their Rhyl garage especially for the Gala. General Manager for St Helens Rob Cheveaux is pictured (left) collecting his award from Publicity Chair Ann Daniels. Rob said “It’s great for Arriva to support such a worthwhile cause and it’s great to see that the funds raised are used in such a good way. Arriva are always proud to support local causes and we would be delighted to provide a bus again next year.” We were also delighted to award a special Gala Plaque to Canlines who produce spares for canning equipment. Director Malcolm Roberts, pictured right receiving his award from Cultural Director Julie Green, was honoured as a thank you for sponsoring the 2011 Grand Raffle which enables the Gala to boost funds prior to the main event. We are of course grateful to everyone who 26 supports us in any way, we really couldn’t do it without you all!
SHOP LOCAL IN RAINHILL A vital part of any village is its local family run businesses and Rainhill is no exception. Rainhill’s shops, like everywhere else in the country, have been feeling the pinch of tighter family budgets and the ability of the big supermarkets to attract people in with their special offers. OK, so no-one is saying that shopping at the big out of town stores shouldn’t be done, however next time you do think about how much easier, quicker and indeed cheaper it would be to shop in your own village.
Why shop in your village? Firstly lets look at the cost. We took a snap shot survey of a number of items found in various shops across the village including Longsters, The Village Butcher, The Fruit Shop and The Village Shop (formally Nicolas Spend & Save). We found that ALL of the items were cheaper in Rainhill than in one of the nearby big supermarkets. These items were not something weird and wonderful, just everyday items like bacon, apples, washing up liquid and soap. Not to mention that the Village Butcher can tell you where your meat has come from, can the big supermarket do this? So what about the convenience. Well you’ve probably heard the arguments of late about cash machines and parking. Well GOOD NEWS, parking is free in Dane Court (the Village Hall car park) for 2 hours and there are 3 FREE to use cash machines within 2 minutes walk of the Victoria (Co-Op, Church Terrace News & Ann’s Newsagent). But then do you need to drive to the village bearing in mind that petrol is now £6.48p per gallon, have you factored this cost into your shop?
Support the campaign! Have you ever heard the saying use it or lose it? Well this is the case here. Even if you change your shopping habits and use your local shops once a week, this will enable them to keep going. Remember that there are lots of people in our community who cannot get to the big supermarket and rely on our local shops, could this be you one day? Visit your local shops this week and see what’s in store. *Comparisons correct 29 April 2012 made via www.mysupermarket.co.uk and fuel price at www.theaa.com

REPTILES GALORE AT THE RAINHILL GALA 2012

Once again this year you will be able to get up close and personal with some of Rainhill’s slipperiest residents. There will be snakes, spiders and lizards at the 2012 Rainhill Gala. Look out for them, if you think you’re brave enough! Please ensure you wash your hands after handling reptiles!

Can we help your organisation? Last year we donated over £3,000 to local groups right around Rainhill. We were pleased that the money went to groups that meant a wide range of people benefitted from Gala cash. A full report can be found on pages 20 & 21 detailing all the beneficiaries from 2011. This year we will be doing the same with 50% of the money raised from the Gala going to our main charity, Willowbrook Hospice and 50% supporting small groups in Rainhill. We aim to award money to groups in Rainhill who may find it difficult to find funding elsewhere. We don’t have the same criteria as some funding providers, the dreaded 30 page form, nor do we discriminate either. We do however insist that for a group to be eligible, that the entrance or joining requirements are not overly restricted and that the group operates in the interest of many people. Pictured below is the Rainhill United Under 8’s team who were looking for a kit sponsor, and as this benefits many children, we considered this to be a worthwhile cause and awarded them £450 to buy a new football kit in 2009. We don’t know how much we will be able to award this year, if anything, however any surplus funds will be divided between Willowbrook and local causes. If you would like to apply for funding, please apply by sending an email to funding@rainhillgala.co.uk giving as much detail as you can about your organisation. We will then email you by the closing date of 1st July 2012 to let you know if we will be looking further into your application. We will of course need to verify your group and someone from Rainhill Gala will need to come along to one of your group meetings. Terms and conditions apply, these are available on our website and we promise to reply to all applicants.
Special thanks to our friends at Golden Triangle Power Generation for supplying the power for the Rainhill Gala 2012

RAINHILL MODEL RAILWAY CLUB Founded in 1995 RMTC now has 41 members (and a waiting list) and meets three evenings a week in our new clubrooms within the St Helens Museum of Road transport where members are busy constructing a number of layouts in gauges from N (1:160) to G (Garden Railway size), as well as personal projects. Twice a year we hold exhibitions at Rainhill Village Hall, one in March and a special Christmas event where Santa is the special guest, come along and join us then on November 24th. The club attends other events put on by model railway clubs and organisations all over the North of England and Wales. On Saturday 10th March we moved into our new home and to top it off we were delighted to welcome Pete Waterman, a model rail enthusiast himself, to officially open the new clubrooms. Whilst unveiling a special commemorative plaque, Pete said “Model Railway Clubs are so important and this museum is the perfect place.” The public were then invited to look around and chat with members and Pete, who never seems to tire of talking about railways, both model and full size. He departed with the thanks of club members for a memorable occasion which will be remembered and talked about for a long time to come. Show your support in the community with a Rainhill Gala sustainable shopper Want to show your support for your local shops and help Rainhill Gala raise funds? Well do just that and get your hands on one of this year’s must haves... An exclusive limited edition sustainable shopper. Made of natural fibres in an attractive natural and red combination, the Rainhill Gala sustainable shopper is just the ticket for your shopping trips in and around the village. The bag also features a special slogan that captures the spirit of the Gala designed by Joshua Mimnagh from St Barts RC primary school. Joshua entered our poster competition last year and the phrase really did capture the hearts of the Gala committee who unanimously chose it to be the centre piece of the new shopping bag. Joshua, pictured top right with Rainhill Gala’s Cultural Director Julie Green, is modelling the new bag. You can see the other side of the bag on page 16 modelled by St Ann’s pupil Leah Ingleton. These exclusive limited edition bags will be available in outlets across the village soon. Not only will these strong bags be great for carrying your shopping, you’ll be supporting Rainhill Gala charities and good causes in the process. Remember that all of the surplus funds from Rai nhill Gal a’ s fundraising go to charities and good causes in your local area! The Annual Rainhill Barn Dance Held in the Village Hall in April, the Third Annual Rainhill Barn Dance run by Rainhill Gala Events was a huge success with over 120 people turning out to dance to the sounds of Liverpool band Two Left Feet. After filling up on Cottoms Hotpot and delicious apple pie the revellers once again took to the dance floor and showed Rainhill who really has talent. If you’ve never been to a barn dance before then why not put your inhabitations aside for one night next year and join us once again at Rainhill Village Hall for the 4th Annual shindig? It’s great fun, you get fed and the bar is well stocked and cheap!!! The Fourth Annual Rainhill Barn Dance will be held on the evening of Saturday 13th April 2013 and everyone is welcome. Tickets will sell fast for next year so get in now and send an email events@rainhillgala.co.uk to reserve your tickets in advance. Don’t worry if you’ve no dancing experience at all as there’s a caller on hand for each dance to teach you the steps. Did you know that Rainhill Gala Events runs alongside The Rainhill Gala providing additional events and functions, the funds raised then fund the purchase of equipment etc. for The Rainhill Gala which in turn allows more of the funds raised each year to be used directly for the benefit of local groups and charities, so next time you see a Rainhill Gala Event, come along and support us and have a good time too! If you have some ideas you would like to share with us, why not get in touch and let us know!

The Rainhill Gala wouldn’t happen without the support of so many volunteers from our community, and this is where we need you! The Gala committee meets once a month to plan for the annual event, and we are always looking for new members to join our committee. You don’t need any special skills or experience, you just need to want to do something positive in our community. Our current volunteers come from many different backgrounds and together make a wonderful team, but as the old saying goes, many hands make light work! Even if you don’t want to make a regular commitment by joining our committee, you can still help out by getting involved on or around Gala day itself. If you have a spare hour on Sunday 3rd or Monday 4th June we would love to hear from you! On the Sunday we will be setting up for the event and on Gala day there are a number of duties including stewarding, running stalls & raffles and general hospitality. Go on, be a part of YOUR Gala and help make a difference!
