Vision

Design fiction can be powerful. It can unveil untravelled routes and open up possibilities for a better future. It perpetuates the discussions around the creation of a potential world. The vision behind this project lies in transalating memories by the waking of new senses. In the present world, there is a bombardment of visual media. Memories are captured through cameras and phones. There is a need to ask “What If?”. What if I could smell the scent of the cobbled alleyways in Venice again? What if I could smell my grandmothers kitchen again? What if I could carry the smell of my garden with me? How may one store these pungent memories in ways novel to the existing kind? Can we build conversations surrounding new senses and be able to share the reception with one another? These stir of questions lead to one answer; iScent. It will allow people to feel more, remember more and experience more.

Scent is the question mark I’ve asked my self several times. It’s where technology could potentially extend in the future. What will it happen if our sweetest odours could be with us all the time? Would they lose their meanings? Will they maintain their primitive connection with our bodies? Will they vanish or become peripheral? Design Fiction is the answer; through its speculative approach inspires and question about possible futures, triggering discourse and becoming the catalysts for favourable change. The vision behind this project lies into the formulation of an imaginative world where smell becomes the everyday, the always present, a new and sharable emotion, to connect, revive and commune. iScent is the persuasion, the intensity and the novel vista of a future we might or might not need. And so.. what if?

iScent The given brief required us to explore existing and emerging technologies, which were thereafter positioned and conceptualised into a possible future. The purpose was to critically consider the positive and negative implications that chosen technologies will have on society, if applied to a mundane world. In order to envision the reality of these potential implications, design fiction was utilised as as a methodology and a practise of enquiry. To enquire about the future, design fiction requires the use of diegetic prototypes, or fictional objects, to trigger discussion and to gather insights regarding their applications. This technique was used to suspend ‘disbelief about change’ and to enable us to explore the potential value of a novel and radical design work (Coulton et al., 2017). Our proposal revolves around the creation of debate regarding radical sensorial data. The sense involved is smell and its ability to encapsulate memories, emotions and meaning. These last are enabled by iScent, an inbuilt technology within the iPhone to capture, record, play and share smells. In addition, a smart candle is provided as an extension of the new iPhone to experience smells within more vast spaces. iScent aims to capture this persuasive power of odour into a novel fictional concept, enabling new emotions and unique discussions surrounding its possible realisation in the near future. “Odors have a power of persuasion stronger than that of words, appearances, emotions, or will. As time passes, instilled within us is a resevoir of ones past memories and experience. Sentimental value is directly proportional to humanistic values. I believe the sweetest of memories are made due to the element of ‘someone else’. Someone else’s kindness, someone else’s humility, someone else’s care for you, transalates into a sense of belonging, wishing and hoping to experience everything once more. I miss the smell of the bubbling pot of sambar being cooked in mummy’s kitchen. The smell of jasmines I tied around my hair during wedding season in India. The smell of balloons grandad bought for me when he went on business trips to Pondicherry. The smell of the the rain when it touches the soil. To be able ‘to be’ is the greatest gift I have been given. Senses are all we have. It means everything to me as it shapes my perception, allowing me to live, love and forgive.

The Smell of Data Leanne Wijnsma and filmaker Frouje Tan design ‘The Smell of Data’ in retaliation to the arising problems concerning the leakage of online data. When a user accesses an unprotected website or wifi network, the grenade shaped device releases a metallic scent to warn the user about the potential risk in accessing the sites. It was developed in parallel to the idea of a gas leak, how the smell of gas alerts an individual that the space is being threatened (J o n e s, J. 2 0 1 6 ) . This case exemplar highlights how smell can implement impactful changes within our society. This powerfulness of smell is the key element taken into consideration for the realisation of our proposal.
