CORAL REEF RESEARCH INSTITUTE, NARARA, JAMNAGAR DESIGN THESIS

INTRODUCTION Coral reefs are the most diverse of all marine ecosystems. They teem with life, with perhaps one-quarter of all ocean species depending on reefs for food and shelter. This is a remarkable statistic when you consider that reefs cover just a tiny fraction (less than one percent) of the earth’s surface and less than two percent of the ocean bottom. Because they are so diverse, coral reefs are often called the rainforests of the sea.

What are CORALS ? Corals are invertebrate animals belonging to a large group of colourful and fascinating animals called Cnidaria. Each individual coral animal is called a polyp and most live in groups of hundreds to thousands of genetically identical polyps that form a ‘colony’.

Anatomy of a polyp

CORAL REEF !!

FAC T S AND FIGURES

Coral reefs are therefore created by millions of tiny polyps forming large carbonate structures, and are the basis of a framework and home for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of other species. Coral reefs are the largest living structure on the planet,

coral reef in india The total area of coral reefs in India is estimated to be 5790 sq. km

India has a coast line of nearly 8129 km but the reef formation is restricted to four major centres, viz. Gulf of Kutch. Gulf of Mannar, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Coral reefs of the Indian Ocean were built up during the tertiary and quaternary periods.

In India, the reefs are distributed along the east and west coasts at restricted place. Fringing reefs are found in Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay. Platform reefs are seen along the Gulf of Kachchh. Patchy reefs are present near Ratnagiri and Malvan coasts. Reef structure and species diversity vary considerably between the areas due to differences in the reef extent and geoenvironmental conditions.

AIM OF THE PROJECT

PROJECT SCOPE

To prevent the degradation of coral reef due to climatec change and the anthropogentic activities

The project aims to conserve the coral reef ecosystem also, to promote the research facility for coral reef conservation, monitoring and the management in gulf of kutch.

To engage and early career conservationists to build capacity in coral reef conservation through, for example workshops, mentorship, and research opportunities. educate the public through social and standerd media and through outreach activities on the need ro conserve coral reefs, and to provide outlet to promote the work of reef scientists, ngos, managers are conducting.

The project will work towards integrating coral reef conservation science into policy and management actions, while engaging students and early career conservationist ti buils capacity in reef conservation. Its activities will serve coral reef conservation based on igh quality science at local, national and international scales through publications and social and media; provide guidance to both govt. and non govt. conservation on coral reef.

TYPOLOGY The core function of the research facility for the coral conservation, monitoring and management, which will act as an information centre to provide a knowledge and identity for coral ecosystem.

USERS the user typology of the project involves a varied array from ecologist, conservationists, administration staff, students, to visitors.

connect scientist with conservation practitioners and policy makers and work at all scales to conserve coral reef in the face of both local and global threats.

programme formulation Third, An aquarium and learning spaces will enhance the education for people. Also, the Narara islands is a famous one-day trip for Jamnagar people and those from provinces nearby. Also, to construct an artificial reefs is also an opportunity for people in all physical condition to learn and experience the essence of coral reefs.

The programs come from existing problems. First, proper coral nursery stations to process the sexual propagation on corals and rise baby corals. An advance station can conduct the experiment on those baby corals as well. Second, Laboratories that contribute to more accurate results. Sample rooms with a controlled temperature can keep the samples fresh, ready for the research.

site analysis and strategies As the site is located in the interdial zone it is necessary to raise the building and thought to make it in the sense it floats on the sea at high tide another that the site has a warn and humid climate to deal with it is ideal that the building is designed in such a way that there is maximum air circulation . and tried to keep the laboratory environment as mush as free to accomodate all the equipment and the layout of the work space.

REVITALIZATION OF NYAY MANDIR, VADODARA, GUJRAT URBAN DESIGN STUDIO

nyay mandir

Vadodara has a rich historical background. The ardent historian can trace Baroda’s history over 2000 years and more. The outstanding trait about Baroda’s cultural life is that it is remarkably cosmopolitan. And while there are hundreds of different identities, everyone participates in all activities. So, the culture of the city is not just history or heritage; it is dynamic, ever-changing and alive.

Historical and archaeological findings date this place back to the 9th century when it was a small town called Ankottaka (present Akota) located on the western bank of the river Vishvamitri (whose name is derived from the great saint Rishi Vishwamitra). Ankottaka was a famous centre of Jainism in the 5th and 6th century AD. The city was once called Chandanavati after its ruler Raja Chandan of Dor tribe of Rajputs, who wrested it from the Jains.

activity mapping of the surrounding complex at different time of the day.

The capital had also another name “Virakshetra” or “Virawati” (a land of warriors). Later on it was known as Vadpatraka means in the heart of the banyan tree’,Bahadur Shah’s right hand Rumi Khan was sent to Baroda. During those days Rumin Khan was asked to design Baroda city, He planned it like a Roman city. He designed the city in such a way that Mandvi was in at the centre and four huge gates on four sides. house 2/2 Location

Background

The Mohta Haveli to be seen historically has been a residential building for the diwans during the reign for raja bika this residential complex consisted of 5-6 havelis divided by large courtyard making it a gated complex. The central courtyard were used for gatherings and administrative announcements. This complex is connected to the junagadh fort through a tunnel which was also accessible to horses. Currently the complex is divided into more residential units, converted into mixed used building consisting of the shops at the outer periphery at lower level.

The Mohta Haveli is located at Mohta Chowk. The buildings in the street are majorly mixed used. The streets are wide and have huge havelis around them.

Users

Mohta Haveli being a part of Diwan complex consists of multiple family which makes it a conglomeration of multiple havelis with several living, eating , sleeping and recreational spaces. Even though the users are of the same typology they have privacy barriers within the same haveli.

Functions

Mixed-use building Although the house has been purely residence ever since, even then the functions of the spaces have changed with time. As the later generations of the joint family made divisions of the house into three houses, after which the many spaces have been changed into multiple kitchens, washrooms, sleeping spaces, etc.

Construction

Originally the building is constructed with brick masonry having highly ornamented facade consisting of arched openings and jaisalmeri jarukhas. The intricate details of jarukha are crafted out of yellow sand stone. Façade was finished with plaster over the brick masonry and claded with yellow sand stone. The opulently decorated facade enhances the building and sets it different from others. Wood is another material used in the building for ceiling, doors and windows and somewhere as lintel. clad with yellow sand stone.
