Dear Readers The Monsoon is at its best in Goa, and the Monsoon Tourism is booming in the state with the time. There used to be a time where in people would go away from Goa once the monsoon started, and the tourism industry of Goa remained limited to barely a 6 months duration. However, now the scenario is constantly changing, and the Tourism Industry of Goa now say. ‘’Goa is 365 days on a holiday”. The new slogan developed but Goa Tourism changed the entire picture of the way tourism used to take place in Goa. People from all across the world started pouring into the state throughout the year. The businesses that were non- operant during the monsoon have started running on all 365 days of the year. The boost for Tourism in Monsoon led to the promotion of the places of the interest in the state. The cover story of this issue is also pertaining to the same. ‘’The Five Things You Can Plan This Monsoon in The Hinterlands of Goa” is all about the places which are away from the Goan beaches and remained unexplored all this while, and have now suddenly become the attractions of Goa. The article five things, will take you through Goa’s unexplored hinterlands, the places that can be only explored during the monsoon such as, the spice plantations, beautiful waterfalls of Goa, Backwater cruises, White Water Rafting and much more. So if you plan on visiting Goa this monsoon, it would be great if you went through the article to make your journey more memorable. The official language has been nagging the people off for several years. There is the section of the society, that believes that Konkani needs to be the official language of the state, while the another section of the society wants Marathi to be the official language of Goa. The issue however, might never get sorted out for that matter, but the government is in the process of finding the middle way out of this. Another thing that I would like to bring to your notice, is the mushrooming of YOGA centres in the state. The yoga centres are increasing in the state and foreigners are the major source for this. The foreigners now come down to Goa in search of setting up of a YOGA centres which not only makes them some money but it also helps them in learning the new things while being in India. Last but not the least, the Goa’s famous Mapusa market is the place you can't afford to miss while you are in Goa on your vacation. This market which started during Portuguese regime attracts the vendors from all around the state. Rest all the features are in the place. We are awaiting to receive your feedback on this issue. Kindly suggest to us, what you are are looking forth to reading in the forthcoming issue of Goa Prism, Till then enjoy the read. There are a number of reasons for the tourist to come to Goa in the monsoon. This is applicable for the Indian tourists more than foreigners. Goa is calm in monsoon. The first and foremost reason are, it is dirt cheap in monsoon, what I mean to convey here is that you can get the five-star hotel stay for the cost of three stars in the monsoon. Not just resort but you may even rent out the Villas within your budget. Everything is cheap in Goa during the Monsoon. Second reason is this place is less crowded in the monsoon. In the offseason, most of the foreigners go back to their hometown and many beach shacks are also closed during the monsoon. But with continuous degradation of beaches in Goa due to uncontrolled encroachments, the tourist coming to Goa started diverting their attention away from the beaches. This was the time the tourism sector of Goa with its stakeholders started contemplating the option for the coastal tourism destination. The real charm of Goa has always been subsisted in its villages. Although it remained neglected for quite some time but ďŹ nally the time came when everyone started looking at the hinterlands of Goa for the promotion of tourism. Goa's hinterlands are not meant for the tourists alone but a major chunk of

1. THE BACKWATER CRUISES The term backwater cruises consists of maneuvering the cruise through the dense mangrove lined up in the banks of rivers in Goa. The major rivers that are presently being used for the backwater cruises are
22

Mandovi. The cruise takes you along the banks of Mandovi River from Chorao to Divar Islands via Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. The Salim Ali is Goa's only bird sanctuary where you can spot the rarest species of
birds and in case you are still lucky then you might end up spotting large crocodiles taking a sunbath on the banks of the river. GTDC (Goa Tourism Development Corporation) has special trips organized into the backwaters of Goa. The boat named after one of the goddesses of Goa 'Shantadruga' has the capacity to carry around 150
people at a time and it is docked at Spice Gardens in Savoi/Keri. Here you, not alone experience the backwater cruise but also get the chance to meet with the complete rustic experience of your life. 2. SPICE FARM TOURS The next thing you can consider doing this monsoon in Goa is to pay the visit to spice plantations of Goa. There are around half a dozen spice plantations exists across Goa and many of them are recognized by the Department of Tourism for the purpose of maintaining the quality and safety measures. You can visit any of the plantations from the bunch but before you visit the plantations you need to read this article so that your trip remains safe and pleasurable. The ďŹ rst things you need to do it book your plantation trips only through the recognized channel to make sure that you are not overcharged. Most of the spice plantations generally charge anywhere between 500 to 700 INR depending on their package. Normally a package includes the welcome drink at arrival and then the trip to plantation followed by the
lunch. The lunch gets served on the banana leaves, its complete rustic experience and although the food is served in Veg, as well as Non-veg varieties it is recommended to go for the veg menu. Normally plantations do not serve the liquor but here the matter remains subjective. The main reason behind the visit to plantations in Goa is to get closer to nature. Today most of the people settled down in the cities and go away from natural beauty the visit to spice plantation will take out all your fatigue and you will return back rejuvenated. There are some spice plantations provide the services of Ayurvedic Massages. The best time to visit the spice plantation is between MID July and September. Few plantations also provide the elephant rides and elephant bathing. (You can check out the website of Goa Tourism for more details)

5. VISIT WATERFALLS IN GOA: This is the most sought after the thing that any tourist or local Goan would always love to do. When you think of waterfalls in Goa, the first name comes in front of you is the Dudhsagar Waterfall. That is undoubtedly the biggest waterfalls of Goa and lot is written about that in various media and hence I am not going to talk much about the same. How many of you are aware that there are more than dozens of waterfalls in Goa? Even going one step ahead let me quote here that few waterfalls are concealed in the hinterlands that only the villagers are aware of. One such amazing waterfall that I would like to mention here is the Netravali Waterfall. Netravali is situated at around 60KM from the capital city and this place is covered with the dense vegetation. The access to this waterfall is not easy at all. After you park your vehicle at a nearby Spice Farm you need to walk around 1 hour to reach this waterfall. Due to the rough terrain and flowing rivulet in the
rainy season, the access route is very difficult and hence elderly people and small children should not venture into this. Although the journey to the destination is not easy but once you reach the destination I am sure that you will not regret the journey that you have done. The Spice Farm situated in Netravali arranges the trip to this waterfall as a part of their package wherein you get the company of a guide with you who shows you few more places before reaching the waterfall. Most of the youngsters venture into this place on the weekends. Other waterfalls that you may like to visit this monsoon are, Arvalem Waterfall in Sanquelim, Kuskem Falls in Canacona, Tambdi Surla Falls in Tambdi Surla, Kesarval Falls in Kesarval & Hivrem Falls in Valpoi. Make sure that the most important thing you don't forget while you visit these waterfalls in Goa and that important thing is your safety is prime. GOA PRISM VOL 8 ISSUE 10 WWW.GOAPRISM.COM

The culture of Goa, including its language, has defined Goa as a unique state in its own way. The native language of most Goans, which is also the official language of Goa, is Konkani which is now sharing another official language

that is Marathi. The Konkani language underwent changes due to Portuguese colonization facing with gradual lack of usage and support. But however, it has recently revived due to the efforts of dedicated traditionalists.
Approximately one-third of the Goan population recognizes the language of Marathi as their mother-tongue. This language has a special statute in Goa. It sounds very similar with Konkani. Both these languages belong to the Indo-
Aryan group of the Indo-European family of languages and have numerous dialects of common origin (probably from Sanskrit) and script -Devanagari. Many Goa people speak both, Konkani and Marathi well enough.

The generation of Goans that were born and grown up in the period of Portuguese rule also speaks the Portuguese language. At schools, it is studied as the third language and its use is limited and is gradually dying off. However, many Portuguese words have entered the local languages firmly, especially among the Christian population of the state. The history of co-existence and development of languages in Goa largely reflects the history of the struggle for the state independence. Marathi is one of the 20 most spoken languages in the world and its supporters consider the Konkani language to be its dialect, while Goa to be a part of Maharashtra. Therefore the adherents of revival and prosperity of Konkani after the liberation from Portuguese colonizers had to fight for recognition of their native language. They have defended the independence of the State of Goa at a referendum in 1967. But the language of Konkani for many years remained repressed by the languages of Marathi, Hindi, and English. The supporters of Konkani waged a stubborn struggle, which reached even to the bloody clashes and deaths, to receive the statute of official language of the state for their mother-tongue as Konkani In the 1970s this question was tackled by the specially formed committee of Indian National Academy, which, after some discussions, put an end to disputes declaring the Konkani an independent and literary language of the state. The campaign for independence reached a point of climax with its greatest success only in 1992 when a constitutional amendment included the Konkani into the list of official languages of India and recognized it the only one official language of Goa. Many Goans, including famous poets and writers, have written and published their literature in Konkani to maintain the official language of the state but recently the language is fading due to different other languages are spoken by the locals influenced by outsiders. Many Goans are still in a struggle to preserve the language by taking part in Konkani plays called ''Tiatr'' or "Natak". This is held in each and every village. "Tiatr" are held by the Goan Christian community and "Natak" are held by the Goan Hindu Community. It is the way of life for Goans. In this way, the Goan ''tiatrists''are trying to preserve the Konkani language. People living in Goa have observed various influences on Konkani culture in Goa. As the world is becoming a small village, global influences are part of the modern society. But then what happens to our xeet-kodi (rice-curry) culture? Coming back to the title ''Konkani sharing Marathi as an official language'', recently The Goa State Assembly has passed the resolution according to which the Marathi will be made an official language of the state of Goa along with the Konkani. The demand for making the Marathi an official language of Goa was in the pipeline for a long time which has GOA PRISM VOL 8 ISSUE 10 WWW.GOAPRISM.COM

finally been fulfilled claimed the sources. The Goa Legislative Assembly has finally passed the long-pending resolution demanding the Marathi to be made an official language of the state of Goa along with Konkani. It has also been assured that all the stakeholders will be taken into the confidence. The resolution was moved by the independent MLA Naresh Sawal on the floor of the house with the private members to make the Marathi as the official language of Goa along with Konkani, which is already notified by the Goa Government. The resolution was amended by BJP MLA Siddharth Kuncolienkar, who added that stakeholders and people should be taken into confidence before notifying Marathi as an official language. The resolution was strongly opposed by another
40
GOA PRISM VOL 8 ISSUE 10 WWW.GOAPRISM.COM
independent MLA Vijay Sardesai who opined that making the Marathi an official language of Goa will result into the losing the identity of Konkani. “Goa's unique identity would be diluted if Marathi will be allowed to be made official language along with Konkani,” quoted Mr. Sardesai adding that “Konkani has been already declared as the official language of the state, which saw widespread agitation during the 80s on the issue. Let the people decide on official language. Legislative Assembly should not decide.” Goa Vikas Party's Legislature Caetano Silva and Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco had also strongly opposed the move of making the Marathi as the official language of Goa. “If government notifies the Marathi as the official language of Goa then it would have to face the rift of people of the state,”
said Reginaldo. BJP MLA Vishnu Wagh supporting the resolution narrated historical anecdotes of how Marathi language and its literature have roots in Goa as much in Maharashtra. He accused some of the legislators of speaking in the House on the issue “without knowing the history of the language.” Today the generation prefers to speak in English and sometimes Hindi due to which Konkani is losing its mark. “There is no point fighting over Konkani and Marathi at this stage when English is encroaching upon our lives”, said Dhawalikar, whose party was founded in 1962 to make Marathi Goa's official language and merge Goa into Maharashtra. “Across several religious, social, economic and cultural spheres there are substantial numbers of
Marathi population in the state. There are nine Marathi newspapers with about 1.50 lakh circulation each day, given these facts it is necessary that Marathi receive official status and the house immediately pass amendment to Goa Daman & Diu Official Language Act, 1987,” Sawal said. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, in response to another resolution, assured that the state government would consider constituting the State Minorities Commission. “The matter is with the select committee now, we will look into it and take a decision on the formulation of the commission,” he said. Adding to that he also said that the House has passed the particular private member's resolution, with an amendment that the Official Language Act 1987 could be changed after thorough consultation GOA PRISM VOL 8 ISSUE 10 WWW.GOAPRISM.COM

with the people. Speaking further, the Chief Minister stated that the government is fully aware of the place enjoyed by the Marathi language in the state. “This is the precise reason why the government has gone out of the way to establish another academy – Goa Marathi Academy – when there was some problem with the already existing academy, Gomantak Marathi Academy,” he stated, adding that the government will also ensure grants to Goa Marathi Academy from time to time. Knowing public's opinion, regarding this issue is vast. There are certain people supporting the Marathi as an official language while on the other hand there are people asking for Konkani and English as an official language. At the end of the day,
42
GOA PRISM VOL 8 ISSUE 10 WWW.GOAPRISM.COM
opinions are many but the decision is one. The number of English schools is on a rise. In secondary schools and in all other higher educational institutions it is English, which controls the educational scenario. Konkani is being replaced even in households by English because parents feel that the future of their children depends on the knowledge of English alone. Konkani language—the most important factor of Goan identity—is slowly and systematically being displaced from the Goan soil. Goa is currently facing a rapid increase in the population. The percentage of non-Goans in Goa is almost 40%. If the same influx trend continues, in another decade, Goans will be a minority in their own state.

The term of Guru, which means the teacher has originated in India. With the civilization, that is as old as 5000 years makes India one of the oldest civilization in the world. India is also considered to be an origin of Yoga which was practiced by the sages in India. But as the power of Yoga spread across the world, many foreigners realized the value of it and now the foreigners practice Yoga and also teaches the same to Indians. Goa, being one of the prominent tourism destination, is the heaven for the foreign tourists.

According to the sources, a European and Russian traveler on tourists' visas have taken to yoga in a big way and seem to be minting money in collaboration with the locals, as training classes have mushroomed along the state's coast from Arambol to Patnem. Taking over the business of Yoga ďŹ tness in Goa, many foreigners have become Yoga Gurus in the state. Churning money by teaching Yoga and Wellness to Indian as well foreigners the Russian travelers coming to Goa on a tourist visa are getting engaged into new business now. According to the reports
published by TOI, Instead of local and Indian yoga gurus, a sizeable section of tourists looking for fitness and wellness are being taught the basics by foreigners mixing business with pleasure, albeit illegally to rake in the moolah for themselves. Posters advertising classes for different types of yoga practices are seen pasted everywhere – on trees, walls and even on electricity poles in coastal villages speak volumes about the thriving activity. The major areas of their operations have spread across Canacona in south Goa to Pernem in North
Goa. None of the business of outsiders works in the state without the involvement of local Goans. When the media spoke to one of the tourism stakeholders in Palolem about the modus operandi of these Yoga Gurus, it has been revealed that the local involvement is mainly restricted to renting out their premises, but bigger players who actually offer training normally come from outside. “These locals renting their places for classes, keep mum while civic bodies and others look the other way,” said the sources. The yoga gurus arrive in the state during the season time and later they target the foreigners interested in yoga and join hands to set-up a base. “It's a give and takes. partnership with foreigners that helps in bringing foreign clientele which means more profit” said the sources. In Patnem, Agonda, and Palolem, the three beach villages with high footfalls of foreign tourists, there are eight to ten operators in each. “The teachers training course of 200/300 hour duration comes with a certificate at the end,” a stakeholder said. On the edge of Patnem beach, a thriving yoga centre caters to foreigners. The operator is a north Indian while majority of its instructors are foreigners on a tourist visa, a source said. Most the target clients of the Yoga Gurus comes from abroad after booking their classes online. A 24-year-old tourist, Dr. Petra Simberg, from Finland is in Goa to complete her 200-hour teachers' training course by a paying a fee of 1,600 pounds (Rs 1.30 lakh). After completing the course she will head to Rajasthan. Another Polish tourist and physiotherapist Natasha is in Goa to do the teachers training course. “I'm doing good!,” she told the media as she walked towards her class on Palolem beach. In North Goa villages of Arambol, Morjim, and Ashvem which have a high concentration of Russian tourists, posters about yoga classes will be found in abundance. A tender coconut seller at Arambol beach told the media that his whole place is covered with posters, largely on yoga sessions. “I don't know who those
yoga teachers are?” he said. He said the panchayat should initiate action against those defacing public properties with posters. It's quite probable that trainers may not be thoroughly qualified, and are fly by night operators. ccording to the sources, the plans of the Ayush ministry which is already offering certification course, in quality control and standardization in yoga, will take a while to come into effect. Union minister for Ayush Shripad Naik said his ministry will make it mandatory that yoga teachers obtain due certification to qualify to impart training. Rules and regulations are being framed to ensure quality and standardization, he added.

Mapusa is a quite little town in Goa that does not offer much in terms of sightseeing attractions. But the charm of the town is the weekly Mapusa Friday Market that attracts tourist by scores. The Friday Market is a major market in Mapusa, North Goa and a major tourist attraction. It is located outside the Mapusa Municipal Market. Friday sees most housewives from Bardez and Tiswadi descend on the stalls selling a staggering variety of local produce brought in by farmers and small entrepreneurs from all over Goa, to sell directly to the consumer. The market winds up by dusk and Mapusa quickly gets back to normal, until the following Friday.

This market reflects the essence of Goa and it is a riot of color and noise. Goan women dressed in their colorful best come in from the surrounding villages to sell their locally grown or manufactured wares, including spices of all kind. A fresh fruit, mostly organically grown, is in abundance. It is well known for its jewelry, pottery, spice, and carpet shops. Many of the stalls in the bazaar are grouped by type of goods, with special areas for straw hats, Goan Homemade Churisso and the like. Once entering into the market, the elusive smell that twitches everyone's nose is Goa's secret ingredients for all those wonderful sweet and sour curries - round lump of seedless tamarind, or amot as it is known locally, is traded in great demand. The best part of shopping in the Friday Market is, despite the good bargains, you are still expected to haggle. Never pay the first price asked, whether it is over trinkets, straw hats, dried fish or furniture. The best part about shopping in Goa is the local markets set up by small time traders who sell just about everything imaginable, ranging from spices

WELCOME TO CHANDAN GROUP CHANDAN GROUP is an integrated services company specialising in real estate consulting and provides property solutions to Local , Multinational Corporations and high net-worth individuals. The owner of the company Raghavendra Shetiya has started this business in 1997 as an individual is now has complete set up of Office and staff to provide any needs of the Customer.
CHANDAN GROUP Started in 1997 by Mr. Raghavendra Shetiya as an individual and now has his own organization named Chandan Group comprising panel of advocates, a team of architects and other professionals that he works closely with. Before starting a new wing in the company, Raghu was part of his family's ancestral business — timber trading and packaging, but real estate was something that he was more inclined towards. He started with buying and selling of properties and that is how his business grew, as he formed a network of friends and associates. He forayed into joint venture projects and small apartments. From there, it gradually grew and he started his own company
called Chandan Group. Raghu Shetiye took one step further when he started a portal "Hello Patrao" for the people of Goa as he thought that there is no good property portal dealing with real estate, trading, brokerage etc. in Goa. His dream was to give more than what usual brokers do. As common problem that everyone faces in Goa, whether resident or tourist is of conveyance. Public transport is quite lacking and also the availability of other passenger vehicles like taxis or autos. Raghu floated cabbie service – TaxiGo in August 2013, which can be depended upon for the sudden car in emergency times or if stranded for transport.
OUR MISSION To be the preeminent provider of superior real estate & taxi rental services by consistently improving the quality; to add value for clients through innovation, foresight, integrity, and performance; and to serve with character and purpose that brings honor to God.

The launch of the new luxury bus service from Dabolim to Calangute via Panaji will give a big relief to the Goans as well tourists coming to Goa by air as the bus trip will only cost them about Rs. 150 from Dabolim Airport to the Calangute while the tourists' taxi drivers charge exorbitant amount anywhere from 2500 to 3000 rupees for the same trip, said the sources. The locals, as well as tourists, would always be complained about the charges applied by the taxi drivers which is more than the cost of airfare from Mumbai to Goa. This news may come as a shocker to some of the local taxi drivers and operators since they might get the big dent in their business but this bold step taken by the Tourism Department of Goa along with the Vasco MLA and KTCL Chairman Carlos Almeida will be appreciated by the local Goans and tourists alike, said the sources. The KTCL has deployed the luxurious Volvo Bus Service which will ply from Goa Airport to Calangute via Panaji and back. Initially, only two trips will be started in a day with the single bus shuttling on this route and subsequently the number of buses will be increased with more trips depending on the demand, said the sources. The press note released by the PR agency of GTDC claimed that Congestion outside the Goa airport and tourist taxi woes at Dabolim will now be sorted out with the operation of luxury Volvo A/C shuttle bus service from Airport to Calangute via Panjim and vice versa. The service was flagged off at the hands of Vasco, MLA and Chairman, KTCL, Mr. Carlos Almeida and Goa Airport Director, Mr. B.C.H. Negi along with other officials. This initiative was worked out for the convenience of tourists wishing to travel to North Goa. The public transport facility will be available to and fro from the airport at Dabolim to Calangute via Panjim and vice versa, said the sources. The press note stated that total 21 passengers took the advantage of the inaugural ride from Airport to Calangute at the launch day today. The sources further said that the ticket charges of the trip will be very nominal. The bus will charge only Rs. 150 from Airport to Calangute and Rs. 100 if someone wants to travel only up to Panaji. The bus will also pick up the passengers from Calangute and Panaji on its return journey said the sources. According to the sources, Goa Tourism Development Corporation will assist in the bookings and will also put additional counters for more paid taxis and the same will be finalized in a week. KTCL looks forward to introducing two trips per day on regular basis. This was initiated especially to ease long queues in front of taxi counters at the airport. In Marcel, the constant downpour, on the 12th day of the month of ‘Ashadh’ that roughly falls in the 2nd or 3rd week of July, celebrates the chikal kalo festival. It is during this time that it is the perfect recipe for the enactment of a traditional ritual - chikal kalo. This tradition is considered to be followed for around 150 years. The festival celebrates the naughty nature of Bal Krishna or Baby Krishna who is known for his endearing antics. In the this festival, no matter the age; young or the elderly, this festival brings out the krishna; that is care-free, joyful and well, the very ‘swaroop’ of Bal Krishna is something you need to see, believe and experience. Marcel has 32 temples but the Devki- Krishna temple is the most popular across India, where the idol of Devki holds the idol of her son Bal Krishna in her lap. When you come near the temples, for rituals, you will see oil-soaked bodies do a circumambulation or the parikrama of the temple before entering the temple. On the beat of the drums, the men are dancing and singing; the sheer energy and atmosphere can exhilarate anyone entering the temple. Devotees also apply some oil on their foreheads as it is a sign that the festival is open. The soil of the ground is muddy with incessant rains and every man present there bursts with energy and enthusiasm. The villagers all come together to celebrate Chikal Kalo. The men of the village, both young and old, play games in the mud that Krishna played with his friends in Braj Bhumi.
