G20 Summit : India will play host in 2022 says PM Modi

Will Pragati Maidan be ready to host the event?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese premier Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin on 30 November, held a trilateral meeting, the second among the three countries after a gap of 12 years, on the sidelines of the G-20 summit here to discuss cooperation in various areas. Prime Minister later announced that India will host the G20 Summit in 2022. The year the country would celebrate the 75th anniversary of its Independence. The G-20 is a grouping of the world’s 20 major economies. Modi made the announcement at the closing ceremony of the two-day summit held here in Argentina’s capital. Italy was to host the international forum in 2022. Thanking Italy for allowing India to play the host, Modi invited G-20 leaders to India in 2022, which also marks the 75th anniversar y of India’s Independence. “In 2022 India completes 75 years since Independence. In that special year, India looks forward to welcoming the world to the G-20 Summit! Come to India, the world’s

fastest growing large economy! Know India’s rich history and diversity, and experience the warm Indian hospitality,” the prime minister tweeted after making the announcement. G-20 members comprise Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK and the US.

Now the big question is where will the summit be held?

An ITPO Official said the Rs. 2,500 crore Pragati Maidan has been designed to host such mega events, and the work of Pragati Maidan should be completed by the end of 2019 to host the event including global meetings. The officer added that the convention center was designed and developed with events like the G-20 summit in mind. We are confident of completing the project by October 2019, which is the deadline. Necessary traffic interventions for seamless vehicular movement will also be ready by then,” said another official who did not wish to be named. He added that there would be no delay despite construction work being suspended for a few days due to high level of air pollution in the national capital. One of the major attractions of the new facility will be the convention centre, which can accommodate 7,000 people. This can also be in two parts — plenary hall with fixed sitting of 3,000 people and multi-function hall of 4,000 people. In addition, there will be an amphitheater with a 3,000-seat capacity.

Farewell to CeBIT

The most hated tech trade show ever? The world’s biggest technology trade show, CEBIT, may be shutting shop in its home country of Germany but its Australian operations remain to see the growth – Negative or positive.

CeBIT was an important figure in the European tech landscape, where companies exhibited their wares to a throng of buyers, journalists, and opinion leaders. At its peak, the show drew over 850,000 people, who all crowded into the Hanover Fairground exhibition center. Over time, these numbers dwindled to just 120,000. Why? A few reasons: competition from events like CES, Mobile World Congress, and Computex certainly played a role. With punters going elsewhere, sponsors and vendors pulled out out, and Deutsche Messe, the event’s owners, was looking at a €5 million loss for the 2019 edition of CeBIT. One factor in the diminishing visitor numbers was that Hanover simply wasn’t equipped to host an event of its size. Hanover is a tiny city, home to just 535,000 inhabitants. At CeBIT’s peak,

the event’s attendees more than doubled Hanover’s population. It was the tech equivalent of tiny Andorra hosting the FIFA World Cup, but replace leery drunk soccer fans with leery drunk technology reporters. Accommodation, in particular, was scarce. The small number of

hotel rooms available sold out in a matter of minutes, forcing people to look elsewhere. Many attendees chose to commute to the event from other nearby cities, like Hamburg. Others who wanted to stay close to the venue << Continued on page 7

ITPO invites proposals for land lease for 5-star hotel

To be located near gate 1 on Bhairon Marg, the hotel will have exclusive entry and exit points, and will be connected to the exhibition-cum-convention centre on the surface and through the basement. The India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) began the process of inviting requests for proposals for leasing out the 3.7-acre land inside the Pragati Maidan complex, where a five-star hotel is to be built. Interested parties can send their proposals till December 28, after which we will begin the e-auction process, starting at a reserve price of Rs 611 crore,” said LC Goyal, ITPO chairman and managing director. The work on the integrated exhibition-cum-convention centre (IECC) began last year, with a budget of Rs 2,698.53 crore. As per ITPO, the funds raised from leasing out the land for the hotel will be used for this project.

OIC Halal Expo in Istanbul attracts 40,000 visitors

Some 40,000 visitors from 80 countries attended this year’s Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Halal Expo, organized under the auspices of the Turkish Presidency and held between Nov. 29 and Dec. 2 in Istanbul. Some 5,000 delegations participated in the expo, which presented a wide range of products and services that comply with Islamic guidelines (known as halal), said Yunus Ete, head of the World Halal Summit council and chairman of Discovery Events. One of the most important gatherings on global market halal products and services, the event was attended by 350 firms from 26 countries representing many sectors, including finance, tourism, cosmetics, medicine, chemistry, machine and textile.

complex will have serviced apartments and a mall. However, an auditorium for live performances built on the lines of the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, will surely steal the show. For now, though, workers at the site say it could be at least another two years before the facility is fully operational.

HPMF crowning event concludes on a crescendo Kicking things up several memorable notches this year, the Hospitality Purchasing Managers Forum (HPMF), a trade association of hotel procurement managers, recently concluded its eighth Annual Convention and Awards in the historic city of Varanasi. As in the past, the mega convention struck me as a fantastic capstone to the organizational resilience and innovation as well as the big-picture thinking project that HPMF has become today. HPMF has spread its wings to include 2,100 plus members today and is now fast expanding its footprint globallyEight years ago, the Forum started with just three core members. But HPMF has spread its wings to include 2,100 plus members today and is now fast expanding its footprint globally. “What started off as an idea with only a few dedicated professionals has today snowballed into an organization of 2,100 plus members across the world who are united in their efforts to improve the procurement profession and the hospitality and allied industries. As a non-profit organization, HPMF aims to provide a common platform for buyers and vendors from the hospitality industry. Training and development of procurement professionals, consolidated procurement, industry product standardization, volume discounts, improved professionalism in the purchasing process, development of potential vendors, green initiatives and corporate social responsibilities are some of the key areas that HPMF is working for,” says Mohan Deshpande, Chairman, HPMF. Thanks to the indefatigable spirit of the HPMF

managing committee led by the boundary-pushing spirit of its star Nitin Shankar Nagrale, Founder and General Secretary, HPMF, the Forum has made impressive strides over the years and has gone as far as to launch International chapters in the Middle East and Sri Lanka recently. “I have identified five imperatives for collective action – sustainable development, prevention, building a more secure world by well informed procurement professionals, supporting individuals by training and development and empowering the world’s women and young people to become more responsible. I am determined to bring all relevant partners together and strengthen HPMF to advance its agenda. As part of this initiative, we are revamping and forming an extremely talented, experienced and knowledgeable Advisory Board comprising experts from India’s procurement fraternity and from the hospitality and allied industries. They will be part of the new HPMF and will help in achieving the dreams that we envisioned a few years ago,” says Nagrale. The Forum’s leadership has been pressing the organizational gas pedal hard ever since its inception. The doggedness has helped HPMF earn a glowing reputation and made it into the preeminent business and networking platform for procurement professionals in the industry. The annual conventions of HPMF have become much sought after calendar dates in the almanac of the procurement and hospitality industry. Known to put up hugely successful and fascinating shows, HPMF pulls out all stops to put up a glittering event worthy of their large fraternity. The annual convention last

year at Jodhpur was the talk of the country, with over 250 members and over 30 suppliers, media persons and other members of the corporate world gracing the occasion. The show was absolutely top drawer, leading to speculation that this year the convention would be even more spectacular! And true to their form, HPMF has outperformed each time, in spades. Without even making an attempt to flush you with all the hard statistics of this year’s convention in Varanasi – the gathering saw more than 400 hospitality veterans and purchasing managers from Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, New Delhi, Chennai, Goa, Guwahati, Jaipur, Indore, Nagpur, Vadodara, Bhubaneswar, Puri and other parts of the country and abroad – it was three pulsating days spent over insightful debates, discussions, meetings and fun. Rarely, have I come across such a lavish banquet of an event – gargantuan in size and scope and boldly ambitious and adventurous in design, conception and execution and with a generous camaraderie and folksy essence at its heart. The three-day anniversary celebrations featured an exciting tableau of conferences, B2B meetings, cultural activities, music, song and dance renditions by noted artists, enactment of the city’s famous Ramleela played out in the traditional style, sightseeing trips and tours of important landmarks of Kashi, arts and crafts shows besides loads of fun, feasting, repast and refection that allowed the delegates to savor and soak in the cultural, spiritual and gastronomic essence of a city that traces its roots to the mists of time and 5,000 years of civilization.

Former Facebook ANZ Chief to Head Up CeBIT Australia Stephen Scheeler, the former Facebook CEO for Australia and New Zealand, is the new chairman of B2B technology conference CEBIT Australia, which will be held next year in Sydney from October 29-31. S c h e e l e r ’ s appointment is part of a wide range of measures aimed at refocussing the event to engage and excite a new audience of technology users and buyers, the conference organisers said. More recently Scheeler has started his own consultancy firm, The Digital CEO. “ The changes being driven across CEBIT represented an opportunity to be part of creating an event of real value for everyone impacted by digitisation. Connections aren’t made wandering the aisles of an exhibition any more, they are made during shared experiences, in the depths of a hackathon, working alongside likeminded individuals to achieve common goals,” Scheeler said. Eight advisory committees are currently in the process of building the framework of next year’s CEBIT Australia. More than 100 influential crossindustry representatives from areas including the future of industry, digital pioneers, technology gurus, technology innovators, start-ups and women in tech, will contribute their most innovative ideas to the event. The upcoming CEBIT Australia 2019 event will also be held for the first time in October at Sydney’s International Convention Centre, in an effort to utilise the warmer spring weather and longer days, for the outdoor component of the program. The event will include new, innovative and interactive activations onsite, hackathons, innovation camps, innovative speakers, outdoor displays and CEBIT after hours networking social events.

Sector Enterprises (PSEs). In the same category, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) settled for a silver trophy. Interestingly, this year’s theme was ‘Rural Enterprises of India’ and a huge focus was put on MSMEs. In the same category, Khadi &

Village Industries Commission (KVIC) won bronze while Geographical Indicators (GI) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) got an appreciation letter each. As far as the foreign sector category, participants from Turkey won the first prize while China won the silver and bronze was awarded to South Korea. Awards were also given to private sector participants. In the category, gold trophy was given to Hari Darshan (India). Prime Time Vintage (India) won the silver and bronze was given to Arvind Dairy Private Limited (India). Apart from that, the gold trophies were given to the partner country Afghanistan, focus country Nepal and focus state Jharkhand this year by the minister.

The most hated tech trade show ever? >> Continued from page 1 ended up renting people’s spare rooms in what amounted to a crude predecessor to Airbnb. These accommodations were expensive, and left an awful lot to be desired. “In the 90’s it just got too big,” The Register’s Iain Thomson told me over Twitter. “People were renting rooms that separated sleepers with hung-up sheets, or ending up in cockroach [infested] homes, he added” Hanover also came up short when it came to nightlife. While the likes of Barcelona and Las Vegas have enough bars, clubs, and casinos to keep the thousands attendees entertained until the early hours of the morning, that wasn’t true of this sleepy, picturesque German town nestled on the banks of the Leine. CeBIT tried to address this problem by borrowing elements from more popular events. According to Handselblatt, the company

introduced SXSW-style stages, food trucks, and even a ferris wheel for its 2018 edition. This failed to attract a younger audience, and only confused the older CeBit stalwarts. But for all the event’s flaws, it’ll still be remembered by a generation of tech writers as the location for some spectacular opulence and debauchery. Back in the 1990’s, before the dot com bubble popped, money was seemingly no object. According to some reporters on a private industry Facebook group, it wasn’t unheard of for companies to ferry reporters over in private jets, or fetch them from the airport in stretch limousines. Those days are over. So too is CeBIT, and few, it seems, will mourn it. One reporter summed up the overall sentiment succinctly: “Good riddance! Awful show and terrible city.”

Civil Aviation Expo moves from Hyderabad to be merged with Aero India 2019 in Bengaluru Hyderabad will no longer host the biennial civil aviation expo, one of the largest in the country, the show will rather be part of the Aero India 2019 in Bengaluru, set to be hosted between February 20-24, 2019. No reasons have been given for merging the defence-oriented aero show hosted in Bengaluru since 1996, and the civilian aero exhibition which began in 2008. In March this year, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha had scotched rumors about the merger. The Hyderabad aero show has become part of MICE calendar as India is emerging a big shopper for civilian aircraft. The domestic aviation market has expanded rapidly over the past few years aided

by industry-friendly policies including subsidies for air connectivity to smaller places and the north east. A recent study released by International Air Transport Association estimated that in 2010, 79 million people travelled to/from/or within India. This number doubled to 158 million in 2017 and is expected to treble by 2037. “The 2019 Aero Show in Bengaluru will have a defence component as well as a civil aviation component. Both the Civil Aviation Ministry and Defence Ministry are involved now. Earlier, the show was only defence oriented. But with this merger, the show in Bengaluru will be a unified one,” said a Hindustan Aeronautics Limited official coordinating the aero show 2019.

8 Like everything in life there are good and not so good products and services out there. Exhibitions are no different and it’s crucial that you pick the right one. If you are selling to the end consumer then it’s a consumer show so you will need to find out what the previous attendance at the show was, how long it had been running and important what re-book rate they have each year. This is a good yardstick as to how successful the show is. That’s not to say that I would write off a new show as in reality new shows are exciting for visitors and can often have a very strong footfall. Often with new shows you have a greater chance of getting the exact stand you want and as a big name may even have leverage with the stand price. It’s also important with consumer shows to find out what the entry cost is. People who have to pay to visit an exhibition tend to be more invested in getting something from it and in my opinion, tend to buy more or be more real buyers. If something is free entry, it tends to have less value and whilst you will probably get a higher number of visitors, you will also get a lot more “tyre kickers” who are just there for a day out and not real buyers. Another consideration with consumer shows is that if you are offering any promotional gifts or giveaways on your stand, you are likely to see these dwindle very quickly at shows like this and you may struggle to get a real return on them. Consumer shows however offer you a strong brand awareness opportunity and if you are building a consumer brand, this is a strong way to do it. The other option is what’s traditionally called a trade show which is essentially a business to business show in a certain industry sector. If your company operates in the B2B market, then this is the place for you. Footfall tends to be lower, but the visitors are targeted to your specific sector. B2B shows continue to grow as more companies are seeing the real benefit of meeting clients face to face. As the number of shows increases yearly it’s important you do the one, that is closest allied to your industry and if your competitors are continuing to do these shows it’s because they work. I meet with many companies in the B2B sector who fear doing an Exhibition because of the cost and I get this but in the introduction to this book we looked at the many benefits outside of direct sales that shows can offer and whilst they apply to all shows, the B2B shows are where these advantages really come to the fore. Again, let’s look at some advantages and disadvantages to see where we fit in all of this… The key questions to ask in relation to the event are about the target audience for the show. Obviously, the key driver for exhibiting is to meet the right clients and this may be trade focused or consumer centric, so the ultimate decision is

A lot of companies place a strong emphasis or concern on who is exhibiting, and this makes sense, however I wouldn’t necessarily use it as the key indicator of whether you should exhibit or not, but it can give a clear idea if it’s the industry show, and this is worth considering. A lot of companies enter the Exhibition space thinking it’s a license to print money…I wish! It’s not and the companies who develop the best industry shows tend to be the ones who have a background in that specific sector through trade magazines or industry affiliation. As a potential exhibitor at a trade show, I would always ask and find out what industry bodies are affiliated to the show. Industry bodies carry weight and also bring visitors. My own personal word of warning is that a new show with no industry support is going to struggle to really make its mark and deliver on the visitors which are your real value. Exhibitions can be expensive but also offer great opportunities but just make sure you do your research and do the right one. What Exhibition is the key industry leader in your market sector? Chinese interest in German trade fairs has increased considerably more on the purchasing side than the exhibiting side. AUMA CEO Dr Peter Neven said: “German trade fairs and their offers

The visitor profile of the expo will include professionals such as CSOs, Admin Heads, CIOs, CTOs, Facility Heads, Purchase Managers, System Integrators and Dealers & Distributors of organisations. Speaking on the announcement of the 12th edition of the IFSEC India Show, Mr. Yogesh Mudras, Managing Director, UBM India said, “The South Asia region, which the IFSEC India Expo brings within its radar, is a vulnerable as well as a progressive zone with ongoing threats to h o m e l a n d s e c u r i t y, r i s i n g urbanisation, proliferating crimes, and low people-to-police ratio being some of the most significant factors. The Government of India recognises this vulnerability and has introduced strict regulations and guidelines that promote the use of security and surveillance in the country -- the security of children within school premises, and the growing need for women’s safety being noteworthy instances. Besides, in a bid to make the country truly modern and secure, it has till date invested around ₹

20 Bengaluru Comic Con organisers face flak after kids get objectionable graphic novel

The organisers refrained from responding if they were going to appeal to the parents of those children, to return the books in question

The Baiyappanahalli police on November 22 filed a case against the organisers of Comic Con 2018 over giving an age-inappropriate graphic novel to several children who were visiting the event, which took place on November 17 and 18, at KTPO Trade and Convention Centre in Whitefield. So far, only a single complaint has been filed and no other parents have approached the police. The single case was filed by corporate lawyer, DebjaniAich, the mother of an eight-year-old girl, who was one of the hundreds to receive a goodie bag with a copy of Saga, a popular space-fantasy graphic novel, meant for adults. The case has been transferred to Mahadevapura police station as the incident took place in the jurisdiction of Whitefield Division, a police officer familiar with the case said. Saga is a graphic novel series written by Brian K Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples. It draws influences from Star Wars, however, it is only meant for 17-year-olds and adults. The copies, contained illustrations of characters in the nude and in various sex positions, there was also a gory illustration of a male character biting off the umbilical cord of a newborn. On Thursday, after DebjaniAich posted on Facebook her shocking experience of noticing her daughter’s goodie bag containing such a book, the communications team of Comic Con India apologised, citing it to be an “inadvertent mix up that has occurred.” However, they refrained from responding if they were going to appeal to the parents of those children, to return the books in question.

India all set to increase global trade share: Suresh Prabhu During the World Trade Expo 2018 in Mumbai, Suresh Prabhu, Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, said that the country is poised to increase its share in global trade. He added that India’s exports are growing at 15-16 percent. Prabhu revealed, “In 2017-18, India’s exports recovered and started growing at 9 per cent after declining for several years.” He expressed contentment over increase in export. “I am happy to share that the recovery of India’s exports has started during my tenure as the Minister of Commerce.” He addressed a gathering through a video message at the World Trade Expo 2018 organised by World Trade Centre Mumbai and All India Association of Industries. In the current year, India’s exports are growing at 15-16 per cent, despite small blip in September. Prabhu also revealed the strategy of his ministry. “The Ministry of Commerce has also prepared a strategy for champion sectors in services to promote exports. As part of the strategy, 12 champion sectors have been identified with an export potential of Rs 5,000 crore.” This will strengthen India’s services sector exports. The commerce ministry has already prepared and cleared the agriculture exports policy which will

soon be cleared by the Cabinet too. Also, policies for various territories and regions have been formulated. The ministry is holding meetings with its counter-parts in African countries, where India’s export share is around 8 per cent. Similar talks are on with Latin America. The Indian government is also identifying potential new markets in Central Asia. Rajan Sudesh Ratna, Economic Affairs Officer, Trade, Investment and Innovation Division, UNESCAP, who also attended the function, said, “India’s share in world trade is hardly 2.15 per cent, which is far less than its contribution of 3.21 per cent to world GDP.” He stated that India has signed multiple trade agreements with some countries. “These complex agreements make it difficult for Indian exporters to understand the duty benefits, concessions and eligibility conditions to avail these benefits.” While on day two of the expo, Maharashtra tourism minister JaykumarRawal emphasised on the need for tourism. He added, “The new tourism policy will generate 10 lakh jobs.” He strongly believes that trade and tourism will increase women participation in the country.

29 TPCI to take business delegation to Iraq to revive lost trade December 2018

India’s foremost trade and export promotion organisation, Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) is taking a business delegation of 30-odd food and beverage companies to Iraq in an endeavour to revive direct business relationship between India and Iraq that got affected since 2003. The four-day business delegation commencing on November 26 will visit business men and trade bodies from the cities of Baghdad, Karbala, Najaf and Erbil besides meeting the new Minister of Trade of Iraq who has already sent his greetings to TPCI through the Indian embassy in Iraq with message that his government is ready to welcome the Indian delegation. TPCI is an apex trade body under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry which focuses on promoting and facilitating bilateral trade between India and the world. India had a thriving trade going with Iraq but that was hit in 2003 when Iraq went into turmoil. TPCI chairman Mohit Singla said, “We are taking the business delegation to Iraq with two objectives: one, to open direct business doors to Iraq as lately whatever trade remained is being routed through Dubai and two, to instill confidence among the Iraqi buyers and Indian sellers regarding the business opportunities that exist.’’ There used to be a thriving trade with Iraq from Omr Qasr port close to Basra but that is no longer the case. As of now, there is no banking route between Iraq and other countries, which

necessitate trading through Dubai. Turkey and Iran are the two countries which supplied most of the Iraqi needs during recent times. With the currency of both Turkey and Iran depreciating, Indian businessmen stand good chance of commencing the trade that got affected if banking route between India and Iraq gets reestablished and trade recommences through Omr Qasr port. Mr Singla added that,’’We are taking the delegation against odds for confidence imbibing.’’ India was the leading supplier of tea to Iraq till 2003 but the trade dropped to virtual zero thereafter. Today, Sri Lanka is one of the leading exporters of tea to Iraq. As per 2014 figures, out of the USD

53.3m worth of tea that Iraq imported, Sri Lanka’s contribution was about USD 44.5m. Export of rice and spices to Iraq too is on high agenda. Out of USD 451 m worth of rice imported by Iraq as per the available figures of 2014, India’s contribution was the highest with export worth USD 139.1m followed by China exporting rice worth USD 92.5 million. Significantly, South African countries like Argentina and Uruguay too have started exporting significant amount of rice to Iraq, example USD 47.4m and USD 42.7m respectively. While China has recently started importing rice from India in a big way, it contributes second biggest chunk of Iraq’s rice import, after India. The delegation will call on the Minister of Trade of Iraq on the first day of the four-day itinerary on November 26. The meeting will take place in the company of senior officials of food ministry and of foreign economic relations. The delegation will also be interacting with officials of Federation of Iraqi Chamber of Commerce, India-Iraq Business Council, Najaf Chamber of Commerce and Erbil Chamber of Commerce besides being hosted by leading Iraqi businessmen. 32 Indian auto aftermarket to hit Rs 75,000 crore by 2020, says CII

A thriving aftermarket is an indicator of a healthy automotive industry and India, one of the world’s fastest growing economies and likely to hit the 25 million vehicles sales milestone in FY2019, is a fine example. In FY2018, the domestic aftermarket recorded sales of 61,601 crore (US$ 9.2 billion), marks 9.2 percent year-on-year growth. Recognising the aftermarket’s potential for speedy growth, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has forecast that that the domestic auto aftermarket industry is estimated to reach the Rs 75,000 crore mark by FY2020. In a report titled ‘Transformation Shifts in Mobility and Impact on Aftermarket in India’, released at the Autoserve 2018 trade expo in Chennai, CII says the total aftermarket has grown at a CAGR of 14% over the past five years. Passenger vehicles dominate the aftermarket with 37%, followed by commercial vehicle at 30%. Two-wheelers are estimated at 20%, tractors at 10% and LCVs 3 percent. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala are among the top 10 states that contribute to more than 75 percent of the total aftermarket potential. Given that India’s domestic car market is slated to grow to over 6 million units per annum by 2020, compared to 3.7 million in 2016, the future looks bright for the aftermarket. Citing India’s Automotive Mission Plan 2026, government and industry have targeted an almost three-fold increase of industry revenues to about $300 billion (Rs 2,117,400 crore), improved manufacturing competitiveness and expanding of exports to $80 billion (Rs 564,640 crore).

India’s country pavilion showcases strength at CIIE in Shanghai On the invitation of China’s Ministry of Commerce, India had set up a Country Pavilion in the 1st China International Import Expo (CIIE) which was held from 5th to 10th November 2018 at the National Exhibition & Convention Centre, Shanghai, China. More than 3,000 companies from over 130 countries and regions had participated in the event. The first China International Import Expo (CIIE) had attracted much attention from domestic and international media. More than 4,100 journalists from 630 news organizations at home and abroad had registered to report on the event, according to the organizer. Also, a press center was opened to journalists. More than 300 volunteers were on standby to assist the press staff. The Ministry of Commerce, in coordination with the Embassy of India in Beijing, showcased areas of products where India has proven strength with significant global presence, and there were good prospects for further more market access in China. In this background, India’s country pavilion has focussed on key sectors such as food and agro products, pharmaceuticals, IT & ITES, tourism and services sector. These four areas represent very minuscule Indian presence in China contrary to India’s strength and overall global presence. Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) was the lead agency for the India Country Pavilion in CIIE, Shanghai along with other stakeholders like Ministry of

Tourism, APEDA, NAFED, MPEDA, Pharmexcil, Electronics and Software Export Promotion Council to showcase India’s strength in these diverse areas. The Consulate General of India in Shanghai had extended all local support. China is India’s largest trading partner with a total trade expecting to reach $ 100 billion mark in near future. Both countries have expressed a resolve to address India’s concern regarding large trade deficit with China. Government of India is consistently making sincere efforts to promote its exports to China. This has been achieved through various bilateral meetings at the government level and continuous engagement of Indian businessmen with China. Recently, the Embassy of India in Beijing and Consulates in Shanghai & Guangzhou had organised a series of business promotion and buyer-seller meets covering products like sugar, tea, rice, oil meals and pharmaceuticals which received encouraging participation from Chinese importers.

Singapore eyes 14% growth in tourist arrivals from India in 2018 According to Press Trust India (PTI), Singapore is expecting 14% growth in tourist footfalls from India this year compared to 2017, and plans to tap the growing young travellers segment. “Last year (2017) was a record year where we received 1.27 million Indian travellers. This year, from January till September we have already received 1.08 million Indians. So looking at this growing trend we are hoping 14% growth over last year,” GB Srithar, Singapore Tourism Board (STB) regional director, South Asia, Middle East and Africa, told PTI. Srithar stated that with the record arrivals in 2017, India has become the third highest contributor of visitor arrivals to Singapore. In terms of spending, he said, India continued to retain the number three position. For Indian travelers,Singapore has always been a popular destination for families, cruise and meetings, incentives, conferences and events (MICE), however, Singapore Tourism Board is planning to tap the growing younger population in the sub-continent. “With maximum population in India in the 35-42 age group, we want to show them a different side of Singapore, in addition to being a great family destination. From the coolest indie gigs and the biggest international concerts, to eclectic music festivals, raves and jazz nights, we have a diverse and vibrant music and event scene. STB did an eight-city roadshow this year and in 2019, it is planning to spread to tier II and III cities as well.” Srithar added. Talking about connectivity, STB assistant chief executive Chee Pey Chang said, currently Singapore is directly connected with daily flights in 17 cities in India.”We are watching the demand scenario closely. We are working on the strategy whether to increase the frequency of direct flights from the existing 17 cities or to connect few more new cities in India going forward. However, nothing is in the immediate pipeline,” he concluded.

Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau Beats Its 2018 MICE Target Thailand overshot its ambitious targets in the events sector with earnings surging beyond the THB200 billion benchmark, the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) reported in its summary of 2018 fiscal year (October 2017-September 2018) performance. The government agency tasked with driving growth in Thailand’s buoyant MICE industry reported earnings reached THB219 billion on 34,261,307 domestic and international event business visitors. Domestic meetings provided the volume delivering lucrative MICE related visits to destination across the country. Highlighting key performance indicators in the 2017/2018 fiscal year report, ChiruitIsarangkun Na Ayuthaya, TCEB’s President, said the “buoyant growth was largely driven by the government’s support in developing the MICE industry as an enabler of economic growth.” Other key driving forces included the readiness of MICE venues including hotels, international convention and exhibition centres in Bangkok and upcountry MICE cities as well as the competence of MICE professionals who delivered an events experience that met the highest international service standards. During the fiscal year ending September 2018, Thailand welcomed 1,255,985 international MICE visitors, an increase of 19.85% and generated revenue of THB95.6 billion, up 8.10%. The average length of stay extended to five days with an average spend of THB76,135 per person per trip. According to TCEB’s data, Asian business travellers dominated the market representing 85.77% of all MICE visitors to Thailand. MICE travellers were from China (214,877), India (152,638), and Malaysia (146,387) are the top three supply markets. On the domestic front, MICE visitors reached 33,011,322, generating revenue of THB117.3 billion for the economy. Revenue surged by 28.9% thanks to Thailand’s strong economy, which was driven by high growth in exports and tourism. Commenting on marketing priorities Chiruit said: “This year, we have stressed a strategy to win

buoyant growth was largely driven by the government’s support in developing the MICE industry as an enabler of economic growth. Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, President-TCEB

more events, create new ones and strengthen support for event organizers through an innovative bidding process as well as promoting the image of Thailand as a major destination for the MICE industry in Asia.” Categorized by business sectors, meetings and incentives grew by 26.03% in terms of visitors with TCEB supporting 231 events. The conventions segment surged by 61.23% in terms of visitors attending 108 TCEB supported events. Also, the bureau supported 37 international exhibitions comprising of 28 shows that were upgraded and nine new shows. Regarding the government’s 4.0 policy to promote 10 targeted industries under the S-Curve and New S-Curve segments, which are considered important enablers to generate future growth, TCEB won 217 events and supported meetings and international exhibitions based on the government’s new economic model. Thailand has now established itself as a hub for the MICE business in Southeast Asia connecting ASEAN and CLMV (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam markets). Developments on Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) will help enhance the competitiveness in the MICE industry and draw more international events in smart industry sectors. Looking forward, TCEB has established its strategic plan for 2019 that will focus on three areas. The bureau aims to boost the national economy through MICE events, develop a vibrant self-reliant MICE industry through innovation, and distribute income and prosperity through MICE activities to four emerging MICE cities – Phuket, KhonKaen, Pattaya and Chiang Mai. Other key TCEB objectives include placing greater emphasis on co-creation or integration with associations, government agencies and various organizations.

According to TCEB, upcoming events in the 2018/2019 fiscal year include: n World

Jasmine Rice Festival in Roi Et, 23-25 November 2018; n Isaan Technology Expo in Nakhon Ratchasima, 20-24 December 2018; n Future Energy Asia 2018, 12-14 December 2018; n SITE Global Conference, 11-13 January 2018; n IEE PES T&D (Transmission & Distribution) 2019 (Energy), 19-23 March 2019; n Pro-AV (The Professional Audio Visual), 15-17 May 2019; n 86th UFI Global Congress 2019, 6-9 November 2019. By embracing new functions TCEB will extend activities beyond the role of a marketing supporter to facilitator, developer, a leader of creative ideas and a business partner. In parallel TCEB underscored its commitment to develop MICE venue standards and encourage innovation, as well as support MICE operators to increase their competitiveness. Chiruit elaborated: “In addition to maintaining a close relationship with existing strategic partners, we are identifying new partners in line with Thailand’s MICE industry development strategy based on our global brand campaign ‘Thailand: Redefine Your Business Events’.” For the current 2018/2019 fiscal year, TCEB forecasts 35,982,000 MICE travellers, contributing revenue of about THB 221.5 billion. International MICE visits should reach 1,320,000, generating revenue of THB100.5 billion and 34,662,000 domestic MICE visitors, generating THB 121 billion, Chiruit confirmed.

Indonesia will be Partner Country at HANNOVER MESSE 2020 From 20 to 24 April 2020, one of the largest manufacturing economies in Asia takes center stage at the world’s leading trade show for industrial technology. Indonesia is by far the largest economy within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This was confirmed by Ngakan Timur Antara, Acting Director General of Industrial Resilience and International Access Development, Indonesian Ministry of Industry, and Dr. Jochen Köckler, chief executive officer of Deutsche Messe AG, The Partner Country contract was signed on 1 November 2018 in Jakarta in the presence of German economic minister Peter Altmaier. It may be noted that every year, HANNOVER MESSE spotlights a selected country. This partner country

not only draws the attention of visitors and the media, but also plays a role at the highest political level. HANNOVER MESSE’s most recent partner countries were Mexico, Poland, the USA, India and the Netherlands. Indonesia is working to become Southeast Asia’s biggest digital economy by 2020. The “Making Indonesia 4.0” initiative was developed to revitalize the Indonesian

manufacturing sector through the adoption of Industrie 4.0. It focuses on five sectors for the initial implementation: food and beverage, textiles, automotive, chemicals, and electronics. The Indonesian government is currently developing incentives for companies that deploy Industrie 4.0. Besides accelerating the adoption of Industrie 4.0 technology, Indonesia is concentrating on building

a digital economy. A strong vocational education program should provide workers with the necessary skills. Germany and Indonesia have maintained an economic relationship for many years. The total trade value between both countries reached more than six billion US dollars in 2017. German direct investment totaled 289 million US dollars in the same year. At present, more than 250 German multinational companies – including Festo, Robert Bosch, SAP, TÜV NORD, Siemens, MAN, ThyssenKrupp, BASF, Bayer, Daimler, and BMW – do business in Indonesia.
