After China, NürnbergMesse is now adding “vocational training” to the content in India After successfully introducing the format in China, NürnbergMesse is now also adding “vocational training” to the content of selected trade fairs in India. Its expert partner in this endeavour is the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (AHK). For Peter Ottmann, CEO of NürnbergMesse Group, this gives the successful events added value, especially for visitors: “The German vocational training system deservedly enjoys an excellent reputation at home and internationally. We are very pleased that following China, our trade fairs in India will now also be expanding their existing formats to include relevant ‘vocational training’ content. We are doing this because apart from the exhibited products as such, solutions to the issue of ‘skilled workers’ offer genuine added value to an event. The AHK in India is an important partner for us and we are already looking forward to the next steps we will be taking together.” The Hanns Seidel Foundation has had a presence in China for decades and has a wellestablished network in the ‘vocational training’ arena. At the same time, NürnbergMesse in China organises an innovative range of trade fairs whose content also offers points of reference to the issue of skilled personnel. Consequently, the Hanns Seidel Foundation and NürnbergMesse have been cooperating in China on the “dual system of vocational training” since March 2018.

ICPB roadshows to travel to London and Washington in 2019
India Convention Promotion Bureau (ICPB) roadshows is scheduled to be held in London and Washington in 2019. This was informed by Chander Mansharamani Vice Chairman, ICPB, at the annual AGM of the association. Elaborating on the future plans of ICPB, Mansharamani said, “In 2019, we are planning to take our roadshows to London and Washington around the month of June. A lot many of the world associations are headquartered in London and a lot of the American Associations are in Washington. Maybe one roadshow we would like to have in Australia, along with AIME in Melbourne. We are working on the same; we may combine Singapore and Melbourne, which is again in the pipeline. The roadshows this year held in Paris, Zurich, Brussels and Geneva, garnered a good response. We had almost 110 buyers coming in. We were 12 exhibitors in all. The government has been promoting ICPB as the frontal organisation for marketing India as a MICE destination. Mansharamani further stated, “We at ICPB will soon also be coming out with a report on the size of the MICE industry in India. An agency for the same has been appointed by the government. They are also looking at the new structure for ICPB. We need to restructure the whole body.” On the AGM agenda, he said, “At the AGM, we discussed the calendar of events, we are of the view that we must have four training programmes in a year. We want to tie-up with International Association of Professional Congress Organisers (IAPCO) in USA, which will be a certified programme from IAPCO. One programme will be a residential one for two days and three programmes will be on
different level like entry level, project management and bidding. We have plans now also to have guest lectures, once in three months, to further involve our membership.” On new initiatives being taken by ICPB, he said, “ICPB is going for a lot many activities: opening of chapters; one-time members; bidding of international conferences. Kolkata was a beginning for opening our chapters. We have eight members there and this will help increase our membership across India. If you consider going around eight cities to open the chapters, we will be able to add on at least 100 members to ICPB. This will help us in creating a convention market for pan India. Kochi has a very big convention centre. Similarly, Mumbai, by the end of this year, should build one with the help of Reliance. Kerala is yet to become a one-time member and are keen on hosting the conclave next year. Uttar Pradesh is also on the radar so as is Rajasthan. Gujarat has also been pushing us. We will be calling for bids from different states, to decide where to head the next CIC. The idea is to have a pan India presence.”
Following China and India, NürnbergMesse will also be combining the issue of skilled workers with appropriate trade fair themes in Brazil. For example, at the forthcoming FCE Pharma and FCE Cosmetique (21-23 May 2019 in São Paulo) the supporting programme will present German vocational training as a best practice model for preparing workers for the challenges of the future, especially in respect of technical advances. For Peter Ottmann, this is a development that results overall in an improvement in the quality of the international events organised by NürnbergMesse: “An important part of our recipe for future success is: ‘managing knowledge’. So when trade visitors at our fairs and congresses learn about issues that are perfectly aligned with the products and services on display, this generally results in a very high level of customer satisfaction. The successful German vocational training model is perfectly in tune with the quality promise ‘Made in Germany’ and therefore we are going to continue to pursue this successful strategy with the AHKs in India and Brazil.’’

Deutsche Messe to ‘streamline’ its event portfolio and cancel CEBIT
DNA Zee Business Auto Fest ends on a high note
Organiser Deutsche Messe announced on November 28 that it will be streamlining its event portfolio, cancelling computer show CEBIT and integrating the topics into Hanover Messe. Certain CEBIT topics will also be developed into specialist events. The realignment is due to reduced space booking for CEBIT 2019. Deutsche Messe cited technological developments in the digital economy as a reason that demand has reduced for the show. “In recent years, many discussions within the German industry have involved the thematic overlap between HANNOVER MESSE and CEBIT. It is now time to integrate the topics from CEBIT that are relevant for manufacturing, energy and logistics into HANNOVER MESSE ,” said Dr.JochenKöckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe AG. “We are currently exa m i n i n g t h e d i g i ta l m a r ke t to determine which remaining CEBIT topics we will develop into new events.” On 27 November, Oliver Frese, Deutsche Messe’s member of the managing board responsible for CEBIT, requested that the executive committee of Deutsche Messe’s supervisory board release him of his duties effective 31 December 2018. The committee agreed to his request. “We accept Mr. Frese’s decision with regret and respect. It is difficult to lose such an experienced tradeshow manager and board member. Frese has served Deutsche Messe for many years, most
The 13th edition of DNA’s annual two-day Auto Fest: Walk in, Drive out which gave a platform to carmakers, collectors and enthusiasts to showcase their automobiles and motorcycles concluded on December 09 with a bang. The two-day event drew many to the CIDCO Exhibition Centre in Vashi, Navi Mumbai where the event was held. Actresses MandanaKarimi and UrvashiRautela, and JehangirFaroug, who is an avid motorcycle collector, and has an enviable number of 12 vintage motorcycles in his collection, were amongst the prominent personalities that visited the Auto Fest. Apart from cars displayed by Toyota, Volkswagen, Honda, Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, BMW brands, retro models from a private collection attracted many car-lovers. A 1985 model Volvo and a 2002 Daihatsu Terios were amongst the cars displayed by car collector JavedMirza. Most of his cars were imported and the only ones in India. Superbikes displayed by the members of a city-based biker’s club were another attraction. The bike models including Triumph, Kawasaki, Harley Davidson and Ducati were not only displayed, but their firing was also demonstrated. The fest showcases a wide range of national and international brands like Hyundai, Toyota, Volvo along with motorbike brands like Kawasaki, Triumph, Royal Enfield, Harley Davidson, Ducati. Many families who attended were interested in certain new models such as the relaunchedSantro, the new Liva and the revamped Ertiga. Meanwhile, the fest also gave a chance to the students of KJ Somaiya College and VJTI College by allowing them to network and showcase their talent by putting their customised cars for display. The auto fest concluded aptly with an adrenaline-fuelled performance by the stunt biker’s group IStunt.

recently as the member of the managing board responsible for CEBIT,” said Bernd Althusmann, Economic Minister of Lower Saxony and chairman of the Supervisory Board. “Especially with the new CEBIT concept, Frese showed courage, innovation and pioneering spirit. “The further decline in demand for CEBIT is all the more regrettable, but at the same time, it shows that the CEBIT idea affected the entire economy. The topics it represented, such as digitisation and artificial intelligence, are now seen as overarching tasks – which is also a success for CEBIT.” Deutsche Messe does not expect direct effects from the streamlining, having already adjusted CEBIT’s role in and economic contribution to the events portfolio in recent years. “Thanks to many other strong events and strong growth in our international business, Deutsche Messe remains in a secure and solid position as a company,” said Köckler. Deutsche Messe will continue to use the CEBIT brand at events abroad.

One of the biggest mistakes companies make when doing an exhibition is to go there without a plan or real objectives. This is akin to going to war without a plan. Armies that do that get obliterated and in the same vein going to an exhibition without a clear plan or objectives is really living in hope it will work. The downside to this is that you can’t work out your ROI or ROO(Objectives) if you don’t know what they are. The objectives can take many formats but knowing what they are is the first step. Very often people say we are going there to make lots of or the most sales…. great but how many is lots? When you are doing your projections for the business year you don’t put in a vague sales number…. you put in a real number so everyone knows what to aim for. Maybe you have certain KPIs in your business. Why are Exhibitions not the same? As mentioned at the beginning of this book you can have many objectives, and all can be measurable and should be…. So, consider the list below as a target objective for your next show… n How many existing clients do we want to meet? n How many new prospects do we want to engage with? n How many actual leads do we need per day… per rep? n What 3 key feedback issues do we need to get from visitors about product XYZ? n How many appointments do we need to make for the first week after the show? n Do we want to meet potential new distributors and if so how many? n Can we use this as a recruitment drive and if so how many interviews do we need to set up? I published an article some time ago on LinkedIn about this very issue and it seemed to resonate with people, so I will replicate it below to show you what I mean… ROI is a good acquaintance but ROO is your friend…LinkedIn – Stephan Murtagh The whole concept of ROI in Exhibitions has been really overplayed and I believe the term is fundamentally flawed because it focuses purely on sales made from shows when there is so much more to it than that…. enter stage left…ROO – Return on Objectives! Yes, I totally agree that monitoring the return on investment from doing an exhibition is difficult and very often this is one of the reasons why shows are dismissed as a waste of time. I get that, but I also get that there are numerous ways to evaluate success and not purely on the number of leads you get. In reality it takes some time after the event is over to really make a true and realistic evaluation and just because it’s not immediately seen as a success doesn’t mean it isn’t. I would also say the converse can be true
also where a company gets lots of leads, but these don’t turn into real business. I just wanted to highlight a few things that may let you look at Exhibitions in a different

Getting Your Exhibition Objectives Clear Stephan Murtagh, the Exhibition Guy in his book titled ‘Before You Hit The Venue’ gives insights on all aspects of Exhibiting in an Exhibition. The book will be published in TFT in a series for the benefit of its readers. Enjoy and do write back to us your feedback. way and change the perception of ROI which will offer you ROO as a better yardstick of success. Yes, I appreciate solid sales are one of the key markers, but they are not the only ones and to dismiss the others is to dismiss future business possibilities but also changes you can make in your own business for future profitability. Exhibitions for example are one of the only marketing channels where you can get first hand marketing research with a quantity of people in one place at one time on why people DON’T buy your product…this may seem like a strange one but this information arms you with how you can develop your product to where they WILL buy it. You simply don’t get this from magazines, Articles, or other forms of promotion. Back to the focus of this article…. let’s consider ROI…what return are you looking for and what can an exhibition provide…these have a value and whilst it may not be an immediate value, it is most certainly future value. Your business is not solely about today but rather a pipeline for the future also. So, take a fictitious company YSC Ltd – Furniture Manufacturer selling a new range of High end domestic units, there ROI could look something like this… n ROI - Actual sales – Sell 15 units (5 per day). n ROO – Got 15 new clients who will buy again n ROI - Post show appointments (3 real appointments per day per rep – 4 reps = 12 appts) n ROO – Time saving for reps trying to get appointments on the phone n ROI - Qualified leads (6 per Day per rep – 3 of which end up with business) n ROO – Quality leads saves time n ROI - Meeting with current customers (Target meeting 10 existing customers for a non-sales chat) ROO – Increased our Company profile & re-assured our current clients n ROI - Meeting with new customers (Target to meet total of 25 new customers) n ROO – Increased our profile directly n ROI - Amount of time saving (Reps time in office
– 2 No – 1 Very exciting) n ROO – Built a longer-term relationship n ROI - Hiring new team members (Met 4 people looking for jobs – 3 not a fit – 1 strong fit) ROO – Potential saving on recruitment agency fee n ROI - Conducting Marketing Research (Got strong feedback that clients wanted a version in blue) n ROO – Got immediate feedback positive & negative The real point here is that the ROI of any Exhibition can be judged on many other things rather than cold hard sales. There are many facets and advantages to exhibiting over traditional promotions and ROI is not solely about money but also the return you get from having more time… more time to develop other facets and parts of your business. Exhibitions are the only marketing channel that offer these in one time in one place with buyers who are interested in that market sector and to focus the sole success on ROI just omits all the other objectives and possibilities of what exhibiting can do for your business. So next time you are looking at ROI, maybe adopt the ROO model and let it expand on what you really can and really have achieved. ROI is good and has been your friend…. Maybe it’s time to meet your best mate! In speaking to companies who have done shows over many years, the ones who do the best and return, are the ones that set out with the objective of doing the show with an objective! Don’t fall into the trap that it will all just come together…. if you have a real plan you will get real results. Jot down 5 Objectives you want to achieve at your next exhibition…. Be specific! 1. ______________________________ 2. _____________________________ 3. _____________________________ 4. _____________________________ 5. _____________________________ Read February 2019 Issue for more

The Role of Trade Shows and Exhibitions on Promotion of Trade For what they’re worth, trades shows and exhibitions can prove to be brilliant ways to promote individual business as well as collective trade. Moreover, they play a pivotal role in helping businesses; meet with other players of the industry which fosters the process of learning. A trade show is essentially an event meant to exhibit the goods and services belonging to a specific industry to the potential buyers and businesses. Exhibitions are also similar in nature, with the only difference being that they are open for general public as well. Trade shows and exhibitions can be an excellent way to promote a business and the products and services that it offers. They are also a great way to network with other industry members and grow the customer base exponentially. In addition, trade shows have certain other aspects which are quite promising. We’ve discussed the most
significant of them hereunder -
Lasting Impressions
One of the main objectives of any trade show is to showcase, various business, goods, and services to attendees and other interested parties. For a show that is meticulously designed in a way that it is inherently attractive complete with eyecatching booths along with a bunch of other attractions such as giveaways and promotional items, it becomes fairly simple to leave a lasting impression on the potential customer for a long time to come.
Lead Generations
This is one of the most imperative benefits of trade shows, especially those organised at a large scale, such as the India Expo Shop, to be organised in Greater Noida in April 2017, organised by Indian Exhibitions,
Conferences & Events Services Association (IESA) which is slated to have exhibits from over 150 global exhibitors and a massive number of visitors. Given that each visitor has a potential customer within him/her that is ready to be tapped, the potential for lead generation becomes immense. Simply asking for contact information or getting the business cards of the visitors can go a long way in getting fresh leads and converting them. All that a business would need to do, is getting in touch with the leads right after the exhibition. Furthermore, trade shows offer an unparalleled opportunity for face-to-face interactions with a wide array of potential customers, something that most advertising and marketing mediums fail to do. Given the immense potential that trade shows offer various business to grow and prosper, their significance stands truly unmatched.

I AEE recognized this year’s 304 graduates to date of the CEM Learning Program (international courses are pending), who joined the ranks of the more than 3,000 CEMs worldwide who have earned and maintained their designation. Strategic futurist Nancy Giordano gave audience members a glimpse into the future of technology and business practices during her keynote presentation, followed by members being led to the trade show floor in true New Orleans style by a second line jazz band featuring Dancing Man 504. This year’s Expo! Expo! exhibition was the largest in 17 years, featuring a sold-out showfloor with 298
exhibitors in 41,400 net square feet of sold exhibit space and more than 15,000 sq. ft. of on-show floor education and networking activations. Attendees closed the evening at the Krewe Party Opening Reception where they enjoyed the spirit of New Orleans at Mardi Gras World. The General Session featured entrepreneur Mandy Rennehan who energized and inspired audience members with her “respectfully uncensored” message of staying true to one’s creative and professional passions. The same day, attendees, along with founding sponsor GES, helped raise $16,000 at the 10th annual Humanity Rocks: A Celebration with a Cause held at the House of Blues New Orleans. Proceeds benefit Kingsley House, an organization that has served New Orleans since 1896 through its commitment to ensuring that individuals and families have the supports necessary to be successful at all stages of life. The Annual Networking Luncheon and Awards Ceremony recognized graduates of the IAEE Robert L. Krakoff Leadership Institute, 20 Under 30 honorees, Platinum Circle inductees, winners of IAEE’s Art of the
Show Competition, Helen Brett Scholarship recipients and Bob Dallmeyer Education Fund grant recipients. The recipients of IAEE’s individual awards were also honored with a special presentation. August Robotics was announced as the winner of the second annual Tech Start Up Competition. This year, IAEE collaborated with the Experiential Designers and Producers Association (EDPA) in its first ever Student Design Competition. Students from FIT and Bemidji State University were tasked with developing an activation theme, space and structure design, and pre- and post-show audience engagement ideas for a “brand activation” that aligns with IAEE’s objectives and to be featured at Expo! Expo! 2019 in Las Vegas. Fifteen students submitted proposals and design, and the three finalists were featured on the Expo! Expo! show floor. A panel of judges from EDPA, Exhibitor Group and IAEE selected Kylee Beaver from Bemidji State University as the winner of this year’s competition, which was announced during the luncheon as well. 2018 IAEE Chairperson Daniel McKinnon, CEM recapped IAEE’s successes during the year, then passed the gavel to 2019 Chairperson Tom Cindric, Jr., CEM who discussed his vision for the coming year. Cindric emphasized the changing trade show model, increasing IAEE’s global presence, and the expansion of IAEE’s CEM Learning Program and Women’s Initiatives. Expociety, the closing event for Expo! Expo!, provided attendees with the perfect platform to further develop connections made at the event, as well as create new ones that will flourish at next year’s meeting.

Turkey, the new global hotspot for MICE The country has a plethora of options both for destination wedding and MICE segments; it is high time for Indians to explore the country. Turkey is quite aware of the fact that the Indian market offers them huge scope for business and keeping this in mind, the Turkish Tourism Board in India has taken slew of measures to attract more Indian travellers. One of their target segments in India is wedding. Istanbul is an ideal place to organise a destination wedding for various reasons. Rich in traditions, and the unofficial wellness capital, one can organise a henna party at one of the Hamams in Instanbul, the crowded bustling capital. Near the Bazar, the hotels offer more local colour, literally, since very little is covered on the guests or attendants. On the Bosphorus, one can experience the luxurious setting, as well as all of the advantages of a venue right on the river during wedding celebrations. There are many choices that Turkey can offer with regards to destination weddings. For example, if somebody is looking for seaside location, Antalya is an ideal setting for that. Divine bays of blue water caressing creamy sand beaches with towns perched on the cliff tops to cater to cater to a person on his/her big day. Cappodocia is another location fits for destination wedding. It offers an option for wedding on a hot-air balloon as well. A hot air balloon wedding, for instance is not something that every couple can tell about to their grandchildren. Situated in the heartland of Anatolia-Asian Turkey, this town is best known for its moon shaped landscape, fairy chimneys,
The Turkish Tourism board in India is hosting regular meetings & sessions with wedding designers & wedding planners, florists, entertainment managers, culinary artists, hoteliers that play a key role in destination wedding, introducing them to the plethora of options that Turkey offers for destination weddings. underground cities etc. Similarly, The Oludeniz area brings together so many attractions, beautiful beaches, the best trekking, even the best paragliding sites in the world. The sea here is calm even during storms, which seems like an auspicious detail for a wedding. Beauty, relaxation, history, and affordability work together to make Turkey one of the most highly prized wedding destinations in today’s context. “The Turkish Tourism board in India is hosting regular meetings & sessions with wedding designers & wedding planners, florists, entertainment managers, culinary artists, hoteliers that play a key role in destination wedding, introducing them to the plethora of options that Turkey offers for destination weddings,” says DenizErsöz, Culture & Tourism Counsellor, Turkish Culture and Tourism Office in India. As far as MICE is concerned, Turkey has already emerged as a preferred MICE destination worldwide. Istanbul, Antalya, Cappadocia, Bodrum and Gulet are the top MICE destinations in Turkey. Not only that Mice travel in Turkey is increasing at an incredibly fast pace, with the country being ranked among the world’s top 10
MICE tourism back on track in Kochi Similarly, more international events are on the card in the coming months After being hit by the flood for nearly two months, the tourism in Kochi is back on track with Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibition (MICE) events being hosted in the business capital of the state. With Kochi Muziris Biennale already underway, a huge inflow of tourists is expected in Kochi. Girish Bhagat, general manager, Grand Hyatt Kochi, told Express in the past one month, Grand Hyatt itself has been a venue for 10 major events. Similarly, more international events are on the card in the coming months. “We can confidently say MICE tourism is back on track in Kochi. A number of events are being organised here. Grand Hyatt has been a venue for major events, including international conferences, since October 15.During the flood, the entire hotel industry was affected as several bookings were cancelled. The situation is expected to be similar with other hotels in Kochi as well,” he said. According to Girish, Kochi Muziris Biennale can be a game changer for the tourism industry.“Several associated events linked with Biennale will take place in Kochi in the next few months. Several visitors from foreign countries will be arriving in Kochi to take part in the Biennale. Currently, tourists from GCC countries and domestic tourist are coming to Kochi in large numbers. The city has all kind of facilities to host major MICE events,” he said. K P Nandakumar, joint director, Kerala Tourism, said January is the peak time for MICE tourism in Kochi. “Already, MICE events are being organised in
Kochi since October. In December, Kochi will host several such events. However, we have high expectations about tourist inflow to attend two major MICE events associated with the medical sector with participation from across the globe,” he said.
Destination wedding
Now Kochi is turning out to be a favourite place for Destination Weddings. Girish said they have hosted three such weddings in the past one-and-a-half months. “Two more destination weddings are to be held later this month. We are getting several queries about destination weddings now. The scenic beauty of Kochi and traditions of Kerala are attracting people to Kochi to tie the knot,” he said. E M Najeeb, former chairman of Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) and chairman of ATE Group, said a number of tourists from other state are selecting Kochi for destination weddings. “Mostly Keralites residing in other states or countries used to organise weddings at hotels here. However, recently we have seen people from other states having no links here organising destination weddings. It is an encouraging trend. Our state can be promoted abroad as a wedding destination,” he said.
meeting and congress destinations. According to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Turkey ranks 18th as a growing destination for MICE tourism globally. And the city of Istanbul ranks eighth on the global list because it is a bridge between East and West, both in terms of trade and culture. Turkey is therefore exceptionally well positioned as a destination for the Mice industry. In addition to its geographic advantage as a natural bridge between Europe and the Middle East, bordered by the Black Sea and Marmara Sea, Turkey, and specifically its capital Istanbul, has seen billions of dollars invested in core infrastructure projects to boost its tourism sector and enhance its position as a viable business and family destination. Turkey has been able to attract an increasing number of businesses and people from the European, Middle East and African regions, looking for opportunity and development. Antalya has also taken up a leadership position in the Mice industry. The city has seen its tourism trade grow in 2017 and surpass 2016 figures. Similarly, Cappadocia, Bodrum and Gulet have also emerged as top destination. Commenting on MICE travellers from India, Ersöz says, “Turkey has always been a popular destination amongst Indian travellers. In last few years, the country has emerged as a key destination for Indian weddings and MICE summits. The Turkish Tourism board is now actively promoting Turkey as MICE and as a wedding destination.”

25 Successful conclusion of Intersolar India’s 10th Anniversary and bright outlook for the future with “The smarter E India” January 2019
Intersolar India, the most pioneering Exhibition and Conference for the Solar Industry, closed its doors on December 13, 2018 and has well arrived in Karnataka’s technology hub Business professionals and exhibitors from 13 countries had a vast time to network on various occasions – on the show floor, at the Buyer Seller Forum, the conference, the many free of charge workshops and the extraordinary 10th Anniversary Networking Event – a highlight of the first exhibition day. Delegates enjoyed a highlevel conference and exhibition program as well as manypartner events at the BIEC in Bengaluru. In November 2019, Intersolar India will return to Bangalore and deliver an even deeper view into the renewable energy future: It will be part of “The smarter E India” – India’s innovation hub for the new energy world – addressing the needs of a changing energy world in India. It presents cross-sector energy solutions and technologies and reflects the interaction of the solar, energy storage and electric mobility industry. The smarter E India will bring together the renowned Intersolar India, ees India and Power2Drive India. The exhibition trio will take place at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre in the capital state of Karnataka on November 27-29, 2019. According to Mercom India Research, India’s cumulative solar installations have reached 6.6 GW year to-date (Q3, 2018), with large-scale projects making up 5,382 MW and rooftop installationsaccounting for 1,240 MW (27%). Raj Prabhu, CEO of the Mercom Capital Group said that in the long term, prospects for solar remain bright in the country. The energy transformation in the country continues and 2018 maybe the first year where solar makes up over 50 percent of new capacity additions. A complimentary white paper on the India Solar Market has been
released by Intersolar India and its knowledge partner Mercom India Research at this year’s event, providing an in-depth look at the market drivers and challenges facing the Indian solar market.
Highlights of Intersolar India, December 11-13, 2018 in Bangalore:
Intersolar India 2018 celebrated its 10th anniversary in the capital city Bangalore of the key solar state Karnataka with a great success. After 8 years in Mum-
bai, moving south was a strategic decision to follow the current market trends. The event kicked off on December 11, 2018 with the official lamp lighting and opening ceremony that comprised keynote speeches of government officials and solar experts. The first exhibition and conference day ended with the 10th Anniversary networking event that welcomed key VIPs, conference delegates and exhibitors. The highlevel event program and special knowledge partner workshops were packed with exciting and diversified topics that gave the delegates numerous opportunities to get insights on the latest trends and key drivers of the solar and energy storage industries during all 3-days at the conference centre and at the free of charge Innovation Stage on the exhibition floor. The Buyer-Seller Forum again increased focused B2B interaction during prescheduled business meetings between exhibitors and key buyers. Many country and state pavilions were present from China, Ger-
many, Korea, Switzerland and Indian State Kerala. Furthermore, 5 start-ups have been welcomed at the Start-Up Pavilion showcasing theirinnovations and ideas. Intersolar India once again provided a perfect platform for all industry professionals to meet, exchange ideas, discuss challenges and solutions and promote the interest of the solar, energystorage and electric mobility industry. Save the Dates for The smarter E India in Bangalore on November 27-29, 2019 The transition to renewable energy, decarbonisation and digitalization is bringing lasting changes to the energy world. The old system was static and centralized, with just a handful of large-scale fossil fuel and nuclear power plants supplying consumers with energy. A new, decentralized system is now emerging which relies primarily on photovoltaics and wind power and has many more active participants. An increasing number of homeowners and companies are becoming prosumers – generating, consuming and storing their own energy. In addition, the previously separate sectors of electricity, heating, cooling and mobility are becoming more and more interconnected. The current developments in the energy industry and power generation are also recognizable in India. The power segment is undergoing huge changes because of the government’s move towards renewable resources. In India, a target to install 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022 was set by the Government in July 2018. This means in detail 100 GW from solar power, 60 GW from wind power, 10 GW from bio-power and 5 GW from small hydropower. The rise in electricity consumption and increasing awareness towards environmental issues are both supporting alternative and eco-friendly power generation solutions.
‘Fabsticks’ to replace plastic ID card badges! ITPO invites bids from Royalry Fashion introduces ‘Fabsticks’, a new product to reduce plastic card usage
Mumbai based Royalry Fashion has introduced ‘Fabsticks’, a new product to reduce plastic card usage, while ensuring lower spends and an eco-friendly output for event ID Cards. Fabsticks can potentially help discard the plastic component from the now “ Te m p o r a r i l y U s e d ” P V C basedplastic ID cards for events and conferences, says Nikhil Chande, Proprietor of Royalry Fashion. He predicts an upcoming trend of a shift from Plastic to Fabrics in event ID card badges. As we see, in India plastic badges are widely used in almost all events and exhibitions. Most ID cards are not reusable and have a temporary requirement of may be less than a day. Each year 1000s of conferences being held with millions of attendees, thus it leads to environmental pollution. “We have introduced eco-friendly, biodegradable products made out of polyester fabric, which is reusable, and best of all is durable while maintaining lower costs (upto 40% savings),” says Nikhil. “Fabstick is a self-adhesive fabric badge that can be stuck on any type of fabric (wear) at pocket/ chest level, hence it is easily noticeable by others.
Fabsticks badge is offered in any Shape, Size, Colour and thickness. Usually basic size of a chest pocket is about 6 inch. So, a 5 x 4 inch size badge is quite appropriate for sticking on chest. The use of Fabsticks is not limited to ID card but it can also be used for branding as well as swag wares in Exhibitions, events, concerts, conferences, school, college functions, social parties, and sports tournaments,” he adds. Those companies who have already used the concept as a pilot, claim it as an innovative solution..For example.a Mumbai based school appreciated the fact that Indian flag could easily be stuck on to the uniform without use of a pin, potentially a dangerous item to be provided to kids during national celebrations such as Independence Day. Instead, students were provided with Indian Flag fabric stickers which could be adhered to their uniform. An international transport company used it as a giveaway to all attendees for their annual meetings. Attendees were gifted with logo prints which could be stuck on cell phones, tee shirts, laptops, and bags.

How can India take advantage of Industry 4.0 We have to take advantage of the fast-paced technological changes and leapfrog into the future with new-age systems without transitioning through the long cycle that most of the developed countries went through The fourth industrial revolution or the term ‘Industry 4.0’ was coined to describe how virtual and physical systems interact to create a wideranging impact in which we work, live and communicate with other people. The fourth industrial revolution is different from earlier revolutions in its velocity, breadth and depth, and its impact on systems. Fast technological changes are likely to bring wide-ranging impacts to the society. For example, we are already witnessing the impact on our daily lifestyle due to smartphones and internet connectivity. A decade or so ago, economists and political scientists were forecasting that the 21st century will be the Asian century, mainly due to the rise of two giants, India and China, who would benefit from the demographic dividend. However, the fast pace of innovation in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and robotics may change the narrative 180 degrees. Unless the right kinds of policies are put in place, the benefit of demographic dividend may never be realised in developing countries like India. In Industry 4.0, with the increasing rate of the replacement of humans by machines and robots, manufacturing may again go back to the developed countries. This may crash the aspirations and hopes of the developing world to catch up with the developed world and help raise the incomes of their masses. In India, can we think of taking advantage of the fast-paced technological changes and leapfrog into the future with new-age systems without transitioning through the long cycle that most of the developed countries went through? What are the social, technological and administrative changes that must be made to make India’s cities future-ready for Industry 4.0? For this, we need to identify how we work, live and communicate with other people, and how our infrastructure is being designed and implemented. Basically, we have to consider how we can increase the productivity of our people and adapt to ever-changing skill requirements. Cities have been engines of growth all over the world. However, overly populated cities are getting crushed under the burden of an ageing infrastructure, pollution, traffic jams, natural and man-made calamities like climate change, and are unable to optimise the use of resources, thereby
resulting in low productivity and poor quality of life for their residents. The amount of time that is spent by people in travelling from their homes to workplaces is taking a huge toll on human aspects, including family life and personal well-being. A person who is not happy at home will bring his problems to work, and becomes less productive. Cities can address this problem by providing good public transportation with last-mile connectivity, so that travel time is reduced, allowing more quality time for human interactions and an overall better quality of life. A well-connected information and communications (ICT) enabled ecosystem for businesses can provide them access to up-to-theminute information so that they can make smart decisions. Greenfield smart cities present a huge opportunity because they are starting from scratch, and have the ability to start afresh everything, including modern facilities with public transportation, ICT-enabled infrastructure and impart the right kind of skills to its people. Greenfield cities can become centres of excellence for new-age industries and become innovation hubs. One of the emerging mega trends is the demand for customised products that are currently being mass produced on assembly lines. Even products such as apparels, cars and mobile phones will be customised in the future. Cars are going to be more like an electronic product and fall less and less in the mass-produced automobile segment. 3D printing will become ubiquitous to produce customised products as per individual requirements. This could be the biggest employment generator and forex earner for a country like India—by exporting customised
products to consumers the world over, especially to high-end customers. Renowned futurist Heather McGowan has said that, earlier, people were trained for 25 years and used that knowledge for the next 40 years till they retired. However, this is going to change very soon and “continuous lifelong learning” will be the successful model for industries to remain competitive and for workers to remain relevant in organisations. The distinction between research institutes and production units will blur, and there will be constant exchange between industries and educational/research institutes. With the help of AI and robotics, new ideas will be used to build prototypes and quickly converted into mass products. New products will be introduced at a much faster rate. This will require close interaction between academia and industry. Fast changes in technology will require constant upgrade of skills and implementing new ideas quickly. High-end educational/research institutions need to be colocated with industries in these greenfield cities, so that they can interact with each other seamlessly and bring new customised products as per changing requirements. India needs to create centres of excellence, which act as models for future growth of cities in India. Time is now to revamp our education system, with a focus on research, creativity, communication skills and jobs that cannot be replaced by robots. The biggest criticism of this approach could be that India does not need to spend money on greenfield cities, when a majority of our masses are deprived of basic amenities. We have to remember that these greenfield cities will be big centres for employment generation to the youth coming from metros, small towns and villages, and will enable them to move up in the income pyramid. In the 1990s, the software industry emerged as one of the biggest sources of employment generation and helped hundreds of thousands of youth to be in highly remunerative jobs and raise their standards of living. Greenfield smart cities will tap the potential of the youth to meet the requirements of new-age industries. These centres of excellence will have huge demonstrative role to make our cities better and smarter, and pave the way for India to become a developed nation.

Messe Frankfurt Acquires Another Textiles Cleaning Show
Delay in Trade Fair launch leaves vendors in a fix
Messe Frankfurt continued expanding its share of the textile-care industry in December by acquiring the sector’s leading trade show in France and their second show in the sector in a month. The German organizer’s Paris division, Messe Frankfurt France, took over ownership of JET Expo, a biennial exhibition held at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. It was the latest move to beef up Messe Frankfurt’s growing international roster of trade shows in the textilecare and dry-cleaning arena. “JET Expo is a strong element of Messe Frankfurt’s global strategy,” Messe Frankfurt said in its announcement. “Messe Frankfurt is becoming the undisputed leader in the textile care market worldwide.” Messe Frankfurt earlier this month acquired The Clean Show, a biennial Trade Show Executive Gold 100 show held in Atlanta, and also this year merged its Texcare Asia show with China Laundry Expo. The portfolio is headed by Texcare International, a quadrennial expo that returns to Frankfurt in 2020. Messe Frankfurt also organizes Texcare Paris, a semi-annual show at Paris – Le Bourget that attracts about 1,000 exhibitors. JET Expo was launched in 2005 and was last held in 2017. The show featured more than 3,000 square meters (32,292 square feet) of exhibit space and drew 3,500 attendees. The show was marketed to the French-speaking world. However, 25% of the 2017 vendors was international, as was about 15% of attendees. The next edition of JET Expo takes place May 19-20, 2019. The transaction also included the co-located Vet’Image for the uniform and professional clothing sector. It will become part of Messe Frankfurt’s Apparel Sourcing Paris.
With the holiday season for the New Year and Christmas already behind them, vendors are left to make the most out of the Pongal season. Those who have set up stalls for the Tourist and Industrial Fair at the Island Grounds this year have already lost two of their three main business seasons – Christmas and New Year – this year due to the delay in the inauguration of the fair. With the holiday season for the New Year and Christmas already behind them, vendors are left to make the most out of the Pongalseason.“Initially they said the fair would be opened on December 22 and so we set up shop by December 20. We have waited almost 20 days now for the fair to start,” said Rajesh Saini who is set to sell footwear at the fair. On the days wasted in anticipation, the vendors incurred food and labour charges.“Since we have already set up shop and there are no doors in these makeshift stalls, somebody has to be on guard day and night. We also cook here
at the back and eat. It is not possible to pack up and leave because we are from Gujarat,” said Ashok Kumar. He added that he has been spending `2,000 a day for the 25 days that he has been here. While last year the inauguration was on January 5, the stalls were unofficially open to the public around three days earlier, said vendors. “In the past, we have always had the New Year and Pongal season and if we’re lucky, the Christmas season too. But this year, we are forced to try and take back at least 30-40% of our investments, relying solely on the Pongal season,” said a vendor who did not want to be named. This year, the fair is expected to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister. A Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) official said, “The fair will be inaugurated mostly on Wednesday. The Chief Minister has given us the date. The delay is because many stalls have not completed their interior and other works.”
28 Indian Tourist Arrival to reach 100 bn in next 3 years The 14th CII Annual Tourism Summit 2018 was held on 7th December 2018 in New Delhi. The conference was addressed by Minister of State for Tourism, KJ Alphons. He said that there is a huge need to push tourism in a bigger way. He highlighted that this sector had created 13.92 million jobs in the last 1 year – therefore this is a great job creator. He laid down very clear goals and targets that the Government is keen to work towards in promoting India as a Tourist Destination. In 3 years the Ministry of Tourism aims to double the ITA and a reach a 100 billion in the next 3 years. The Government is keen to attract 1% of the Chinese outbound travelling tourists. This is an area of collaboratively working with the States. The Minister suggested that wellness tourism would help to retain travelers for longer durations in India. Construction begins on trade fair complex in Tirunelveli Despite having more than a lakh industries in its influence area of 100 kms., Tirunelveli lacks a proper trade fair complex such as the one in C o i m b a t o re , i n i t i a te d , completed and maintained by the Coimbatore district small industries association (Codissia). In fact there is no such facility in Madurai too and Madurai District Tiny & Small Scale Industries Association (Maditssia) is also in the process of identifying a suitable space. But Tirunelveli is overtaking Madurai in this regard as the Tirunelveli Corporation has now initiated construction of a trade fair complex. It will be coming up on the exhibition ground spread over 7.44 acres of vacant land opposite Tirunelveli corporation. The trade fair complex that will be established at Rs 56.71 crore will be taken up under the smart city project, according to corporation commissioner in-charge V Narayan Nair. The project is in the tender stage and construction is likely
to commence in January after Pongal. The proposed facility will have two halls measuring 2,870 square metres each, a spacious food court spread over 369 square metres besides a car parking space that can accommodate 368 fourwheelers. The complex will also have modern fire fighting system, rainwater harvesting facility and CCTV surveillance. Completion of the project is expected to greatly benefit industries in the influence area covering the four districts of Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari. Over the years, the lack of such a facility had resulted in smaller fairs being conducted in the available halls that don’t suit industry needs, and on open grounds. Disadvantages of such spaces resulted in the
inability to conduct bigger fairs with the desired international participation despite the potential for growth in the region. According to the industry, the modern complex will make it conducive for the existing salt, fishing, palmyra, coir, coconut, cashew nut, oil and garments industry in the influence area to attract new investments. Industry sources said that according to a recent survey, Tirunelveli had 46,595 units including 18,608 medium and large industries. Virudhunagar has 24,362 units including 2,368 medium and large industries. Tuticorin has 20,077 units including 5,235 medium and large industries and Kanyakumari, around 13,000 units with 7,264 medium and large industries.

Over 100 international delegates are expected to attend expo. FIEO will also focus on investment opportunities in infrastructure development, warehouse consolidation, technology integration and IT enablement and skilling of manpower at the three-day meet. This sector provides employment to more than 22 million people and is expected
in Africa, Latin America, Central Asia, Middle East and ASEAN. The need for integrated Logistics sector development has been felt for quite some time in view of the fact that the logistics cost in India is ve r y h i g h co m p a re d to developed countries. High logistics cost reduces the competitiveness of Indian goods both in domestic as we l l a s ex p o r t m a r ket . Increasing globalization of Indian economy, along with re n ewe d m a n u fa c t u r i n g vigour attributed to Make in India Campaign and growth of e-commerce business all forecast rapid growth in Indian logistics sector. IT Industry Will Add 2.5 Lakh Jobs In 2019 IT sector witnessed positive momentum in 2018 and salaries are projected to grow 10 percent to 13 percent in 2019 Indian IT industry has witnessed major disruption over the past year, with successful adoption of emerging technologies. The industry has been on the cusp of profound change and hiring sentiments have improved across sectors. The Indian IT industry is expected to add around 2.5 lakh new jobs in 2019 further contributing to the growth of the sector, projects TeamLease Services. While the ‘Digital India’ initiative has been one of the key contributing factors in the growth of IT, telecom and e-commerce sectors; some other reasons for the optimism in the IT industry has been increasing investments in digitization and automation as well as improvement in financial services and digital businesses. Furthermore the demand in the IT sector has been quite positive the second half of 2018. Investment scenarios have become more conducive and more organizations are coming to play in the sector. In fact, the uptick in hiring is also because of the entry of new players in the sector. Another lookout for 2019 is the run up to the launch of 5G services which will also increase jobs in technology. AlkaDhingra, General Manager, TeamLease Services said, “The overall job landscape in the IT sector will undergo radical changes over the next few years and certain job roles will continue to see increased demand. Some of the areas wherein positive growth in hiring is expected are computer, mathematical, architecture and engineering related fields. By 2020, about 2

million job additions are anticipated worldwide of which 13 percent increase will be in India itself. In fact during the recent financial results, many IT firms have committed to increasing their workforce by 2020.” Another potentially strong area of employment will be data analytics which is becoming increasingly crucial across multiple industries. By 2020, the demand for data analytics in sectors will continue to increase employment opportunities by 25 percent. Jobs roles addressing specific skill sets will continue to grow. Few skill areas where strong job increase will be seen are: As the boost in employment opportunities
will continue, it is also imperative for employers to keep in demand the skill deficit that India faces. There still is a mismatch between skills which candidates have versus the skills that are required to have in order to meet the demands of the industry. Companies need to take stronger initiatives and adopt new-age mechanisms to reskill employees and optimize talent as well as have stronger retention programs. Many organizations today prefer candidates with higher learning abilities. Senior level hiring is likely to witness shrinkage in 2019 as mid-level hiring will continue to rise. “Jobs roles in IT have become multidimensional and the industry needs to take a generation leap in 2019 when it comes to reskilling. To facilitate advanced skilling, it is also crucial for organizations to hire high skilled and technologically sound HR representatives as well as development specialists who can hire the right talent in the ever competitive market. Investments in IT re-skilling will increase by around 20% in 2019,” added Ms. AlkaDhingra. Salaries in India are projected to rise by 10 percent to 13 percent in 2019, same as the actual increase in 2018. The highest paid technology areas are going to be big data analytics, machine learning and AI developers. However, automation, artificial intelligence and robotics are expected to reshape workplace culture and skill requirements. Organisations, therefore, should re-examine not just their talent strategies but also their remuneration strategies for creating the workforce of the future. Diversity hiring will also become increasingly important in 2019 and beyond.

Exhibitions: Driving Indian Economic Growth & Competitiveness The Indian exhibition market has witnessed a significant change and growth in the last decade. The sector boosts trade, innovation and better understanding between nations drives sectoral growth and develops a host of ancillary businesses linked directly or indirectly to the exhibitions. Developed nations have recognised the exhibition industry’s potential to contribute to their economies in a meaningful way. In comparison with the global scenario, India is still at a nascent stage. However, the sector is growing at a rate of 8.8 per cent per annum and the future looks promising. Each year India witnesses around 700 exhibitions out of which 90% of exhibitors are SMEs. The proactive policies of the Indian government have allowed an ecosystem where businesses can be developed more easily, though the granting of an industry status will no doubt further catalyse this growth. On the occasion of Global Exhibition Day, let’s look at how this sector impacts various sectors, making it a multi-crore industry:
Indian Tourism & Hospitality Industry
Over the years, exhibitions have contributed significantly to the tourism and hospitality industry. Today MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions), count as an integral part of this industry. According to industry reports, the profit stood at $752 billion in 2016 and is projected to grow at 7.5 per cent in the next five years. Interestingly, it is estimated that a person travelling to a country for a conference or convention spends anywhere between four to eight times more than a normal leisure traveller, which leads to an increase in inbound tourism revenues.
Indian Pharmaceutical Industry
The Indian pharma industry is on the verge of transforming into a global pharma hub. Growing at a rate of 15% over the last five years, it is likely to be in the top 10 global markets by 2020, as per a report by PwC. Exhibitions here have been playing an active role in driving government initiatives such as ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’ programmes to provide dynamic solutions for primary challenges.
Indian Gems and Jewellery Industry
The Gems and Jewellery sector in India is a significant contributor to the economy, adding around 7 per cent to the country’s GDP and 15.71 per cent to India’s total merchandise exports. Handcrafted jewellery by Indian artisans are greatly coveted in India and abroad. Recently, industry players demanded Geographical Indicator (GI) tags for jewellery produced by different states. Exhibitions like Delhi Jewellery and Gem Fair (DJGF) and Hyderabad Jewellery, Pearl and Gem Fair (HJF), organised by UBM India help players come together and engage with the government for their demands.
Renewable Energy Industry
India is one of the countries with the largest production of green energy and is also a key job market. Exhibitions here play a very prominent role in building a community that congregates key stakeholders under one umbrella to develop industry knowledge, conduct business leading to investments and MOUs, and promote careers in this domain. This contributes to the country’s sustainable economic development.

25 Years of Success: ProWein Celebrates a Milestone ProWein has grown tremendously over its 25year history. Its first iteration was held in 1994 under the name ProVins, picking up on a small presentation of French wine from a year earlier. While the Francophile name was retained, the spectrum of exhibitors expanded to include other countries. 321 vendors of still and sparkling wine and spirits presented their wares on February 2324, 1994 in Düsseldorf. The entire collection of exhibitors, hailing from Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Columbia, Austria, Portugal, Spain and Hungary, fit into a single fairgrounds hall. 1,517 visitors were recorded at that first event, 250 of them traveling in from other European nations, primarily France. From the start, ProWein was open exclusively to trade visitors from the retail and restaurant industries. This strict standard has contributed significantly to the success of the event. Based on the strong feedback from both ProVins visitors and exhibitors, a second edition was planned for 1995. At that time the fair renamed itself to fit the various languages present — ProVins, ProVino, ProWine and of course ProWein. This time around, 532 stands were booked across two exhibition halls. The tasting zone (in cooperation with “Weinwirtschaft” magazine from the MeiningerVerlag) celebrated its premiere. 1996 saw the trade fair take on its familiar three-day duration, starting on a Sunday. And since 1997 the trade fair has been marketed under one single name: ProWein. The current logo also came into use at that point. An important threshold was crossed in 1997, with 1,065 exhibitors from 25 countries. Michael Mondavi was also personally on hand to present wines from his California estate Mondavi. In the years to come, other big names would follow him: including the Rothschild family, Gaia Gaja, Miguel Torres and Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger. Wine critics like Jancis Robinson and Robert Parker began making the pilgrimage to Düsseldorf as well. There was also a contingent of show business stars, including Sting, Chris de Burgh and Gérald Depardieu, seeking to use ProWein as a platform to introduce their wines to the trade audience. With each new milestone, the
importance of ProWein continued to grow. An article in British wine magazine “Harpers” on ProWein 2013 perhaps expressed it best: “The Wine World lands on Planet ProWein”
Program of supplemental events: broad and colorful
A strong program of events to supplement the ProWein exhibition has also developed wonderfully over the years. Almost 500 events are currently offered, spanning across all three days of the fair. The spectrum ranges from guided tastings on specific regions and varieties to expert lectures on markets and trends. The core idea: events are held directly at the exhibitors’ stands or, starting with ProWein 2013, at the ProWein Forum. There are also additional offerings for trade visitors, such as the central tasting zone operated by the MeiningerVerlag. Since 2015, it has been a single source for all the winning wines from MUNDUS VINI, its annual spring tasting competition. A special presentation entitled “wine’s best friends” was run between 2007 and 2014, offering selected delicacies that pair particularly well with wine and spirits. It was replaced in 2015 by a new special exhibit: “same but different.” This was initially intended as a venue for unusual and innovative ideas in the areas of wine production and marketing. The concept was tweaked for ProWein 2018: “same but different” now provides craft product vendors with an entire exhibition hall of their own to present their wares. Another notable fixture since 2007 is the fizzz Lounge, organized by the MEININGER Verlag; it sits within the “same but different” craft show, presenting the latest cocktail trends. A Champagne Lounge has also been added. Featuring elegant styling, it establishes an
appropriate platform for tradition-rich Champagne producers and brands. In its 25th year, ProWein has become the leading trade fair for the international wine and spirits industry, and serves as an annual industry highlight, central gathering point and platform for order generation. Demand for larger booth space continues to rise, even as a growing number of presenters from a growing number of countries are requesting a spot in Düsseldorf. ProWein 2018 featured 6,378 exhibitors from 67 countries. Among them were twenty businesses and organizations from Germany, France, Greece, Italy and Austria who have been loyal presenters since that first ProWein in 1994. Excluding special exhibits, the 2018 roster of exhibitors covered a paid surface of over 73,348 square meters — compared with the 2,914 square meters needed at the premiere in 1994. The visitor numbers have also grown enormously. ProWein 2018 counted 60,500 visitors from 133 countries, with 54 percent coming from outside Germany. That same figure stood at less than 14 percent at ProWein 2002. A growing number of international visitors are traveling to Düsseldorf each year from all relevant wine import and consumption markets.
A success from the start
The three pillars for success have remained constant over the years: ProWein attendance is strictly limited to professionals in the wine and spirits industry, with a focus on retail and restaurants. All visitors must prove their qualifications to receive admission. ProWein is organized by one of the most experienced and successful German trade fair operators, Messe Düsseldorf. With roughly 50 trade fairs, including 23 branch-leading events at the Düsseldorf location and roughly 70 in-house events, joint ventures and commissioned events abroad, Messe Düsseldorf Group is one of the world’s leading export platforms. Messe Düsseldorf’s central location also offers an ideal infrastructure and ensures — given that it is not located in any wine region — a certain neutral status. The industry can focus entirely on the trade fair activity going on within the halls.
Dubai welcomes 11.58 million visitors in first 3 quarters of 2018 Dubai remains on track to becoming the most visited city for global travel, business and events, according to the latest visitation figures released by Dubai’s Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism). The emirate welcomed 11.58 million visitors in the first three quarters of 2018, with India retaining its position as Dubai’s leading source market, followed by Saudi Arabia and the UK continuing to hold second and third positions respectively, underlining the city’s sustained appeal to its traditional strongholds and a wider diversified global audience. Russia, China and Germany continued to be key drivers within the top performing markets, each recording double-digit growth compared to the same period in 2017. Tourism from Russia remained on high trajectory, growing by a massive 60 per cent year-on-year, with visitor numbers surging to 460,000 in just the first nine months of 2018. The increase in Russian overnight guests was supported by a strong 19 per cent growth in air capacity across non-stop flights, in addition to added ease of travel access following the introduction of visa-on-arrival facilities in the last two years. China also continued to highlight benefits from the visa-
on-arrival scheme, complementing the ongoing ‘China Readiness’ strategy, consequently reenforcing its upward curve resulting in China securing its position as the fourth largest feeder market with an impressive 641,000 visitors so far this year, marking a 12 per cent increase versus 573,000 for the same period last year. Germany grew even faster at 15 per cent to reach 388,000 visitors during the first nine months, landing in eighth place within the top 10 source markets for Dubai. From a regional perspective, the first nine months saw 20 per cent of overnight visitors arrive from Western Europe despite a strong USD, reinforcing Dubai’s growing appeal to target segments within these markets and maintaining its
leading regional position from 2017. Close behind in second place was the GCC region, which made up 19 per cent of the emirate’s overnight visitors during the first nine months. These were closely followed by South Asia with a share of 17 per cent, South East Asia and the MENA and North regions with 11 per cent and 10 per cent respectively, Russia, CIS and Eastern Europe accounted for 7 per cent, whilst the Americas showed a slight increase to 7 per cent. Africa also witnessed a slight growth to 6 per cent and Australasia maintained 2 per cent. His Excellency HelalAlmarri, Director General, Dubai Tourism commented, “The first three quarters of 2018 have seen consistent interest from conventional feeder regions, complemented by some noteworthy spikes in high volume drivers and strong growth in more emerging markets as Dubai continues to actively target a diversified global base of travellers. With 11.58 million tourists to date this year, we have maintained our position as the fourth most visited city in the world according to the 2018 MasterCard Global Cities Index, and will continue to work towards delivering stability throughout Q4 despite wider macro-economic challenges.

37 UFI and Explori present largest ever Global Visitor Insights study January 2019
Trade show visitors globally are reporting a stable overall satisfaction with the shows they attend – but at the same time, between 22 and 27% of show visitors from mature markets feel that shows are “getting worse”. Younger, C-suite show participants are also more likely to require trade shows to become more entertaining, while still enabling them to meet their business needs. These are some of the core findings of the 2018/19 Global Visitor Insights Study, jointly conducted by UFI – the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, and event research specialists Explori, that has now been released. Based on a combination of the unique global UFI network and the global reach of the Explori customer and research base, the 2018/19 Global Visitor Insights provides the largest ever global insight into exhibition visitors. The study is based on the analysis of more than 13,000 responses from trade show visitors, combined with in-depth interviews with 29 event directors and senior marketers. It provides many insights and takeaways for professionals within the exhibition industry, among them: Globally, trade shows receive a 3.86 (out of 5.00) overall satisfaction rating, and a Net Promoter Score of +7. Both values have remained stable over the past three years. Organisers appear to be doing an effective job at maintaining visitor satisfaction and advocacy; however visitors from developed markets are showing more signs of fatigue from the traditional trade show model than those from developing markets. Visitors rate the trade show channel as “best of class” in regards to their core business needs to network/meet people, to buy/source products, to learn/stay up to date with the industry, and to find new ideas/innovations. However, they indicate that their use of other channels will grow at a
n
Data from over 13,000 trade show visitors globally shows shifting patterns of expectations n Trade shows seen as stable, solid, business channel, but competing channels of interaction may see faster growth n While there is some shift towards more “festivalisation”, the current visitor cohort values meeting business objectives over entertainment n Concrete visitor ‘pain points’ cluster around easy-to-manage actions for organisers and venues greater rate than their use of trade shows. The ability to source new ideas and solutions is most closely correlated with overall visitor satisfaction. Therefore, access to an appropriate number of quality exhibitors remains key for visitors. In parallel, the traditional model for trade shows needs to evolve to meet changing needs or audiences: preferences of younger visitors and those from developing markets are beginning to change the current balance; approach to sustainability also becomes a compelling factor in some cases. Organisers perceived visitors as expecting a more seamless experience and this corresponds with the areas that frustrate visitors most. Seating areas, catering, and queueing times top this list. WIFI accessibility only appears at number nine on the list of frustrations, but is more likely to be seen
as an issue by younger visitors. Whereas event technology can have a beneficial effect on the visitor experience in many areas, there is still a general lack of awareness, functionality and execution which currently limits its value to both organisers and visitors. Kai Hattendorf, UFI Managing Director/CEO said: “This study confirms the central role of exhibitions for visitors as their clear channel of choice for their business development. In addition to highlighting the key drivers of visitors experience and the impact of the age of visitors, the study also reports some significant regional differences, and a clear indication as to how organisers can address core elements of the way visitors experience their shows.” Sophie Holt, Explori Global Strategy Director and report author, added: “Global Visitor Insights is the most expansive study we have yet undertaken during our partnership with UFI and we were delighted by the support from organisers around the world in helping us secure such a large response base. I would like to thank all the organisers who participated, especially those who shared their experiences, hopes and frustrations during the research interviews. I look forward to sharing more report insights with the industry throughout the coming year.” For the 2018 Global Visitor Insights study, 13,000 responses from trade show visitors in 135 countries have been analysed in addition to a meta-analysis of the Explori global data-set comprising visitor feedback from over 1,600 trade shows. The UFI/Explori Global Visitor Insights are jointly researched and written by UFI and Explori. The report is supported by The Society of Independent Show Organizers (SISO). The research series by now includes three in-depth reviews of both the exhibitors’ and the visitors’ expectations towards show organisers and venues.
Medical Fair Thailand 2019 moves to a larger venue EDICAL FAIR THAILAND 2019, Southeast Asia’s leading medical and healthcare exhibition, will stage its biggest edition to date with about 1,000 exhibitors from over 60 countries at a new and larger venue: the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Center (BITEC). More than 10,000 medical and healthcare innovations will be on display from Sept. 11 - 13, 2019. MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND is part of Messe Düsseldorf’s “MEDICAlliance” program of regional and international medical trade fairs organized around the globe and will be organized by its subsidiary Messe Düsseldorf Asia. MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND 2019 is set against a dynamic marketplace which is the second largest healthcare market in Southeast Asia, expected to be valued at US $28.5 billion by 2020[1]. In addition, Southeast Asia’s projected expected healthcare spending could increase to US $740 billion by 2025[2] further creating attractive business opportunities for a wide range of companies involved in the medical and healthcare sectors.
Highlights at MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND 2019: • Community Care Pavilion:
The first Community Care Pavilion will showcase new technologies and innovations in the areas of
and innovative new companies. At the debuting Start-Up Park, medical and healthcare start-up companies with innovations in IoT - from big data, wearable technologies to the latest software - will be able to present their technologies.
•Extensive ancillary program:
remote healthcare monitoring, geriatrics, rehabilitation products and assistive devices. With the ageing population in Southeast Asia expected to make up 15% of its total population by 2035[3], the innovations in this pavilion will not only address the shifting needs of the market, but also provide patients and end users with targeted and useful products and solutions to enhance and enable a sustainable quality of life.
•Start-Up Park:
The new Start-Up Park will be a dedicated platform for new and innovative companies to present the latest technologies to potential buyers and investors. The start-up ecosystem in Southeast Asia is estimated at a value of US $13 billion[4], demonstrating the region’s openness to new ideas
The MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND exhibits will be complemented by a wide ranging ancillary program consisting of conferences, seminars and technical presentations. This will include the 4th Advanced Rehab Technology Conference (ARTeC), jointly organized by the Royal College of Physiatrists of Thailand, the Thai Rehabilitation Medicine Association and Messe Düsseldorf Asia. The 2-day multi-disciplinary conference will focus on rehabilitation technology and emerging trends in physical and rehabilitation medicine, with lectures from renowned experts, academics and medical professionals from Thailand and around the world. The CIO Forum, organized by the Thai Medical Informatics Association, will address digitalization in the healthcare market. This full day forum is an invitation-only event for leading information officers. The previous edition of MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND in 2017 was a resounding success with 830 exhibitors from 66 countries and over 9,000 trade visitors - with 33% coming from outside Thailand.
