GHANDI JI You must be the change you wish to see in the world. An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind. You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence. A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes. The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

ongress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar said the party's heavy reliance on Rahul Gandhi in the UP assembly polls will prove to be a "risk worth taking". He added that it will not be the end of the road for Rahul if the Congress did not perform well in the assembly elections in the politically-crucial state. Aiyar, who called the NehruGandhi family a "bonding adhesive" of the party and its "biggest asset", downplayed the presence of Robert Vadra during campaigning, saying he was doing it as member of the family. "I certainly am not embarrassed that Robert Vadra, like Sunita Aiyar, wishes to campaign. They can campaign," he said in a TV interview when asked if he was proud of Vadra campaigning for the party. Aiyar added that he would welcome the Gandhi family's son-in-law as an MP if he won an election. To a question on whether heavy reliance of Rahul in UP would undermine the image of the young leader as it was a "high-risk strategy", the family loyalist said, "Of course. You will never win if you don't take risk. During the course of it, it will be proved that it is a risk worth taking." Asked if Congress's defeat in the politically crucial state would be a setback to Rahul, he said, "Yes. But it is not the end of the road. But if the party wins it will be the opening of the gate (for

him)." In the interview, Aiyar dismissed suggestions that Congress president Sonia Gandhi had taken a "back seat" in the campaigning for UP elections, saying she was continuing to campaign in the manner she has been doing since long. The diplomat-turned-politician also dismissed suggestions that Congress was following "dynastic politics", saying members of the Nehru-Gandhi family secured their succession by "democratic right". He also said all members of the family who headed or were heading the party had overcome several challenges and had emerged victorious. On questions that the Congress rewarded only loyalists of the Nehru-Gandhi family and even their drivers and cooks were given posts, Aiyar refused to subscribe to the view and said there were many loyalists who were not elevated because they had shortcomings. Aiyar, who was removed from the Union Cabinet in UPA-1, said he was made a nominated member of Parliament to keep away from ministership. "I could have easily been brought in as an elected candidate in which case I could have been a candidate for ministership. It was to be sure that I did not become a minister that I was made a nominated member," he said.

Anti-Gujarat forces to haunt state CBI trains sleuths to in 24 hours: Narendra Modi recover black money
A
day ahead of an Ahmedabad court opening a crucial SIT report on post-Godhra riots, Chief Minister Narendra Modi warned of a "storm of criticism by anti-Gujarat forces" to sweep the state in the next 24 hours. "There will be a storm in the form of criticism in next 24 hours, but the anti-Gujarat forces will not be successful in doing any harm," Modi said after his day-long Sadhbhavana fast held here today
without elaborating. "Those who have been criticising Gujarat for the last one decade are going to come back to abuse us once again and this is because they cannot digest the success of Sadhbhavna that is peace, unity and harmony," Modi said. A magisterial court in Ahmedabad will conduct a crucial hearing tomorrow on the Special Investigation Team report in a complaint against Modi and others in connection with 2002 riots.
The SIT report has reportedly given a clean chit to Modi stating there is no 'prosecutable evidence' against him in the riot case. Modi also urged the 'anti-Gujarat forces' to accept that peace, harmony and brotherhood prevails in the state, and not to treat Gujaratis as people of an enemy state. He also warned the 'anti-Gujarat forces' to do their politics outside Gujarat. "They have done enough of salt rubbing into our wounds, but they cannot misguide the people of Gujarat. They cannot see Muslims, Christians and people of other religions working together. Few people who are against Gujarat are baffled by the success of Sadhbhavna," he said. He also criticised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his recent statement that malnutrition was a shame for the nation. "He (Prime Minister) accepted that malnutrition was a shame, but what next. What to do? Merely expressing his pain will not resolve the problem," Modi said. Gujarat has shown the way with regard to malnutrition, where hundreds of people donated Sukhdi(sweet preparation made of jaggery and wheat flour) and dry fruits for the malnourished children, he said.
T
he CBI will begin a training exercise for its investigators on ways to recover black money stashed abroad as part of Interpol's global programme on anti-corruption and asset recovery for prosecutors. "The purpose of this global programme is to enhance the knowledge and skills of investigators and prosecutors in tracking assets of mass corruption, and making effective use of legal assistance in international a n d transborder in-
vestigations," CBI spokesperson Dharini Mishra said. The six-day training programme, which will be inaugurated by MoS for personnel V Narayanasamy, will be the first
such international training exercise for cops, investigators and prosecutors of Interpol member countries. The CBI will host 30 police officers from Australia, Afghanistan, China, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, the UK, Indonesia, Fiji, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore and the Philippines. The agenda will include talk by senior officers of Interpol and the CBI. "Representatives of UNODC, senior officers of the Enforcement Directorate, experts from the American Bar Association, chartered accountants and cyber experts will also share their experie n c e a n d e x pertise with t h e participants," the agency said. The CBI is investigating a number of corruption cases in which proceeds have allegedly been taken to tax havens and the agency is trying to decipher the money trail.

In its email to customers, Microsoft reportedly claimed that databases storing credit card details and payment information were not affected during the security breach. At the same time, the company is said to have acknowledged that the exposed account details may include nonfinancial information, including e-mail addresses, passwords, order details and shipping addresses. Last year, hacker
groups like Lulzsec had carried out several high-profile breakins, putting the focus on security measures companies put in place. Sony allegedly suffered several security breaches and hackers stole user IDs and passwords of customers. Lulzsec had said that with its actions it was trying to draw attention to the poor security methods used at websites, even by multinational firms. Israel embassy car blast: Indian intelligence hints at Iran’s hand
The battle over Iran’s nuclear weapons programme reached India on Monday as an Israeli diplomat’s car was hit by a terror strike barely 200 metres from the official residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
T
he battle over Iran’s nuclear weapons programme reached India on Monday as an Israeli diplomat’s car was hit by a terror strike barely 200 metres from the official residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The first open attack on an Israeli target in India coincided with an aborted strike against Israeli diplomats in Tbilisi, Georgia, pointing to a marked escalation of hostilities between the Shiite theocracy in Iran, which is defiant about pursuing its nuclear programme, and Israel, the US as well as the Sunni Arab world who are equally determined to stop it. On Monday afternoon, a motorcycle-borne youth tailed an Israeli embassy vehicle on Aurangzeb Road in the high security zone in New Delhi, close to the PM’s residence, and allegedly placed “something” on the rear of the car when it stopped at a traffic signal at the intersection of Aurangzeb Road and Safdarjung Road in the Capital’s high-security zone. Seconds later, there was an explosion and the Toyota Innova car, bearing registration number 109 CD 35, went up in flames. Three persons including the Israeli defence attache’s wife Tal Yehoshua Korene, who was going to pick up her children from the American Embassy School, were injured. Investigators later got a crucial clue to the assailant in the footage from two CCTV cameras installed at industrialist Analjit
February 2012 Edition
Singh’s 15, Aurangzeb Road residence. The bomber, in brown jacket on a motor cycle, is seen tailing the embassy car at 3.10 pm at a distance of 2-3 seconds. The cameras could not capture the registration number of the bike. The victim was in a critical condition, having suffered serious spinal injuries from shrapnel in the device that seemed to contain nitroglycerine. The first terror strike involving the use of magnetic bomb mirrored the one that killed Iranian nuclear scientist Mostafa Ahmadi-Roshan on January 11, when a small magnetic bomb was planted on his vehicle by two terrorists on a motorcycle. Four Iranian nuclear scientists have been killed in attacks in the past two years. Indian authorities remained tight-lipped about the source of the attack. However, Israel was categorical in blaming Iran. In an angry reaction, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “Iran is behind these attacks; it is the largest exporter of terrorism in the world.” He further said, “In recent months, we have witnessed several attempts to attack Israeli citizens and Jews in several countries, including Azerbaijan, Thailand and others. Iran and its proxy Hezbollah were behind all of these attempted attacks.” The charge was refuted by a foreign ministry spokesperson in Tehran. “We categorically reject the accusations made by the Zionist regime. They are
part of a propaganda war,” the spokesperson said. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, Indian intelligence sources suspected an Iranian connection to the magnetic bomb attack which they feel could be a retaliation against the covert attempts to thwart the Shiite regime’s relentless pursuit of a nuclear programme which the West as well as Sunni Muslim countries are convinced is meant to equip the theocracy with nuclear weapons. Sources also said Israel had recently confided in Indians their fears of Israeli targets coming under attack from Iranian sympathizers. Sources in Delhi Police did not rule out the possibility of Iranian sympathizers enlisting the modules of Lashkar, who despite their loathing of Shias, are unremitting in their animosity towards Israel. In the past two years, four Iranian scientists have been mysteriously assassinated, 3 of them in attacks where motorcycleborne assailants stuck magnetic bombs to their cars. The only one to survive the attacks targeting nuclear scientists so far is Fereydoun Abbasi, now the head of Iran’s atomic energy organization. He jumped away from his car seconds before it burst in November 2010. On the same day, another Iranian scientist, Majid Shahriari, was killed in an attack in Tehran. An attack in July 2011 killed an electronics student who some reports claimed was working on high-voltage switches.
In November 2011,17 elite Revolutionary Guards personnel including Maj Gen Hassan Moghaddam, believed to be head of Iran’s missile programme, died in an explosion at an Iranian missile base. Besides, a computer virus Stuxnet attacked Iran’s centrifuges over the past year and half, sending many of them spinning out of control. While nobody is completely clear about the damage it has caused, it is generally believed that Stuxnet has delayed the Iranian programme significantly. Some experts recently claimed that the worm had attacked the Bushehr reactor which could suffer a meltdown once its fully operational. Israel is also suspected to have infiltrated the network of suppliers from whom Iran could clandestinely source components for its nuclear programme. As a result, Iran have received defective supplies. While the masterminds of the covert operations have successfully covered their tracks, Iran has held Israel and the US for the sabotage. Iran’s supreme religious leader Ali Khamenei has been quoted in reports saying that Iran would “support anybody globally who takes action against the Zionist entity”. Last week, Yoram Cohen, head of Israel’s Shin Bet security service, was quoted by Israeli media Haaretz as saying that Iran was working hard across the world through the Iranian Revolutionary Guards to hit Israeli targets. “Over the past year three serious attacks were thwarted that were on the verge of being carried out,” the Shin Bet head said. “In Turkey against the general consul in Istanbul; in Baku, Azerbaijan; and two weeks ago in Thailand.” Reacting to the first alleged Iranian retaliatory strike on Indian soil, Alon Ushpiz, Israel ambassador told TOI, “This is a grave evening. Our hearts and minds are with this lady who is still undergoing surgery. It is inconceivable that the Iranian
terrorist supporting regime will perpetrate this terror attack in the heart of New Delhi, the world’s largest democracy. We are grateful for cooperation and sympathy from the Indian leadership and we have full confidence in the Indian system.” Foreign minister S M Krishna, who spoke to his Israeli counterpart Avigdor Lieberman, said, “India very strongly condemns such incidents and it is going to be fully investigated and the culprits will be brought to justice at the earliest. I have just spoken to the Israeli foreign minister and I have reassured the Israeli foreign minister that the law of the land will take its course. The investigation has already started and we will continue with it and then keep him posted as and when we get progress report of the investigation.” In the aftermath of the suspected terror attack the Centre today ordered tightening of security in diplomatic missions, especially of Israel, the US and other western countries, located across the country. Speaking in Tel Aviv last week, Shin Bet’s Cohen said that Iran believes Israel is behind the attacks on its nuclear experts, which have killed four scientists since November 2010. “It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not that Israel took out the nuclear scientists,” Cohen said. “A major, serious country like Iran cannot let this go on. They want to deter Israel and extract a price so that decision makers in Israel think twice before they order an attack on an Iranian scientist.” Iran is locked in a global battle on its nuclear programme, which is opposed by almost everybody in the world. India and China, while not part of the current sanctions regime have also openly opposed the nuclear programme. India has voted three times against the Iranian programme in the IAEA, though it is against sanctions. Although Iran insists it is for peaceful purposes, few believe that this is anything but a military programme.

The entry-level segment of the Indian passenger car market shrunk in 2011, perhaps for the first time in many years.
T
he entry-level segment of the Indian passenger car market shrunk in 2011, perhaps for the first time in many years, and saw its market share dip below 50%. Eyed by many carmakers like Tata, Renault, Nissan, Bajaj and General Motors, the segment has
proved to be the dullest, putting a question mark over whether the enthusiasm among many companies to spend millions in cracking the category is justified. The share of the entry-compact segment - consisting of cars like the Tata Nano, Maruti Alto, Ford Figo, Maruti WagonR, Hyundai’s
Santro, i10 and Eon and GM’s Beat - came down to 47%, thanks to a decline of 0.07% in sales. The situation was quite different for premium compacts like the Maruti Swift, Hyundai i20 and VW Polo as the segment grew at a pace of 6.5% in 2011, and retained its 11% share of the
market. But perhaps the biggest surprise came from the expensive sportsutility vehicle (SUV) segment that registered the fastest growth rate in the year gone by. SUVs, which cost nearly three times (or even more) what an entry-level car does, grew a massive 32% in the year, fuelled by higher demand for both India-made and imported models. An analysis of data collated by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) threw up these surprising results, some pointing to the ‘maturing’ of Indian car buyers and their gravitating towards more sophisticated vehicles like premium cars and SUVs. The year also saw that, while the market braved a slew of negatives like high interest rates and rise in petrol prices, the demand for pricier cars was not dampened. Sedans (market share 19%) saw demand rise by 15%, and this was powered by premium models like the Hyundai Verna, VW Vento and Chevrolet Cruze. So what led to the fall in demand for the entry-level cars? According to market experts, the absence of diesel models and the rise in interest rates proved to be the biggest dampeners. Entrylevel cars are bought mostly by the middle-class and firsttime buyers, and many of them
shied away from the market last year as the enablers were not conducive. “Most buyers of this segment have a home loan already running and the rising interest rates meant a rise in their home EMIs. This reduced their disposable income and their ability to go in for a car loan. Also, since most models in the segment are petrol vehicles, many of the customers could not muster the courage to go for a new car as monthly fuel bills would be inflated due to the near-recurring rise in petrol prices,” an industry analyst said. This perhaps explains why premium small cars were still in demand. Most premium compacts come strapped with diesel engines too, and the running cost advantage that the fuel provides (against a petrol engine model) meant that sales continued to happen. So is it time to write off the entry segment completely? Experts are not so pessimistic. “Once the interest rates come down and petrol prices stabilize, this segment will again grow as the potential here is very high due to under-penetration of cars. Also, with a gradual increase in diesel options (Chevy Beat last year and Nano expected this year), the segment will get a new lease of life. It will bounce back, and perhaps strongly,” an analyst with a brokerage firm said.
School bus driver in no-parking zone crushes 3-year-old A doctor said the girl had died on the accident spot. Tujala was the only child of the Kapures, who are daily wage labourers. As they were getting ready to go to their construction site, neighbours rushed in with the tragic news. Tujala’s father, Baban, said in his police statement , “My wife and I were getting ready for work when our daughter told us that she was going to the toilet ... The incident has crushed us. We have lost our only child.” He has sought stringent action against the driver. An R N Gandhi spokesperson said, “The buses are run by private owners and we have no role in this issue.” Bus contractor Suleman Abu said, “The driver couldn’t see the girl as she was sitting behind the tyre. She was not even visible on the side-view mirror. (Regarding action against the driver) we will ensure we follow the rules.”

school bus crushed a three-year-old girl in Tilak Nagar near Ghatkopar on Monday when it reversed without warning. Locals said the bus was parked in a no-parking zone. The Tilak Nagar police said the incident occurred around 7.30am opposite RN Gandhi High School, which had hired the bus. “The girl, Tujala Kapure, was on the roadside, attending nature’s call, a few metres from her hutment. She came under a rear wheel of the bus,” said senior inspector RM Gavit of the Tilak Nagar police station. “The driver, Mani Watan (44), had a proper driving licence. He has undergone a test to confirm if he took alcohol just before the incident.” He said the driver had stopped the bus immediately and took the girl to Rajawadi Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. UK stabbing case: Praveen’s condition improves

he condition of J Praveen Reddy, who was stabbed in London in a brawl with his room-mates at their Neham flat on Thursday, improved on Monday, according to family sources. The 26-year-old has been undergoing treatment at the Royal London Hospital. Meanwhile, the three
students booked for the attack - Amareshwar Arava, 25, Sai Kishore Balguri, 25, and Nishanth Puttapaka, 23 - were produced before the Thames magistrates’ court. Praveen Reddy’s father Sudhakar Reddy and uncle Madhav Reddy reached London on Monday afternoon. They were received by the Indian
High Commission officials. They were taken to the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel Road, where they spent a couple of hours inquiring about the health condition of Praveen with doctors attending on him. “Doctors told my father that Praveen’s condition has improved,” victim’s brother Jaya Shankar Reddy said.

aking their fight for freedom to yet another level, Tibetans here have started pasting pictures of 22 persons of their community who immolated themselves, in the streets of McLeodganj. Tibetans living here in exile said they were troubled at not being able to alleviate the sufferings of those living in Tibet. The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) has also prepared a documentary video which they claimed was the collection of footages since 2008, of the burning monks inside Tibet. “We have prepared a documentary on the grim situation inside Tibet and Tibetan monks putting their bodies on fire. It has been published on the Tibet online TV,” said CTA spokesperson Thupten Samphel. Disclosing that how these videos reached India, he said that some monks in the monasteries inside Tibet had prepared this and through internet they had been sending it to India. “We have received the videos from the monks of the Kriti monastery here, who are also very distressed over the painful situation in Tibet,” he added. However, other Tibetan groups are also working out the sources
inside Tibet and importing these painful pictures to India, which nowadays have been publicly pasted on the streets of the McLeodganj. “I am proud to be a Tibetan. My parents, brothers and a sister are in Tibet and I’ve never met them after I reached India. I’m thankful to India for giving me shelter away from my home. These pictures stir my spirit, make me think about doing something for Tibet,” said Tenzin Sangmo, 19. “Tibetans are in pain don’t know what to do. Chinese have adopted a cruel behavior. We are very much distressed these days we are doing everything which we can,” said Dorjee Rigdom, a Tibetan activist. He said that since Tapey’s immolation in 2009, till now 22 Tibetans had immolated themselves, calling for the return of exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and protesting China’s continued occupation of Tibet. Tibetans these days are depressed over the reports coming out of Tibet and the exile Tibetan leadership has also called for a daylong fast on the first day of the Tibetan New Year on February 22 in solidarity with the plight of the Tibetans in Tibet.

utting an official estimate on unaccounted wealth stashed in foreign havens for the first time, the Central Bureau of Investigation chief A P Singh said around $500 billion (around Rs 24 lakh crore) is deposited in foreign accounts. Speaking at the maiden Interpol global programme on anticorruption and asset recovery, Singh said the largest depositors in Swiss Banks are reported to be Indians. The CBI director’s disclosure may well increase pressure on the government to act against black
money account-holders as UPAII has repeatedly claimed such an estimate is not possible and has set up two committees to go into the matter. The finance ministry has not provided estimates to Parliament’s standing committee on the grounds that such a calculation is not feasible. Action against “black money” accounts is a hot-button political issue with Opposition demanding that the government move to prosecute those who have clandestinely deposited money abroad and also ensure the wealth is brought back to India.
The controversy has some public resonance with the accounts suspected to be related not only to tax evasion but criminal and terror money as well. With the Supreme Court also taking up the issue, the government has worked hard to conclude treaties with 70-odd countries, including tax havens in destinations like the Caribbean and small principalities in Europe apart from Switzerland. The government has faced flak for not disclosing names of more than 700 account- holders in HSBC, Geneva, and several
in Liechetenstein although it has said secrecy conditions prevent their disclosure. The nature of the tax avoidance treaties has meant the lists cannot be shared by income tax authorities with the enforcement directorate that can use tougher laws. Without indicating how he arrived at the estimate of illegal Indian money abroad, Singh said India, in particular, has suffered from the flow of funds to tax havens like Mauritius, Switzerland, Lichtenstein and British Virgin islands. “It is estimated that around $500 billion of illegal money belonging to Indians is deposited in tax havens abroad. Largest depositors in Swiss Banks are also reported to be Indians,” Singh said. There have been various estimates of Indian black money - ranging from $500 billion to $1,500 billion. An international think-tank, Global Financial Integrity, has estimated that Rs 25 lakh crore has been illegally deposited abroad by Indians. The CBI director’s statement seems to corroborate or support this estimate. Singh said there is a lack of political will in leading tax haven states to part with the information because they are aware of the extent to which their economies have become “geared to this flow of illegal capitals from the poorer countries”.

“53% of the countries said to be least corrupt by the Transparency International Index are offshore tax havens, where most of the corrupt money goes. The tax havens include New Zealand which is ranked as the least corrupt country, Singapore ranked number five and Switzerland number seven,” he said. Singh said tracing, freezing, confiscation and repatriation of stolen assets is a legal challenge, a complex process which requires expertise and political will. He said global financial markets allow money to travel faster and further making tracking the money trail in such cases even more difficult which necessitates such global training programmes as they enhance the knowledge of officials in tracking assets created out of corrupt and criminal acts. The CBI chief said the World Bank estimates the cross-border flow of money from criminal activities and tax evasion is around $1.5 trillion of which $40 billion is the bribe paid to government servants in developing countries. The director said only $5 billion of this money has been repatriated during 15 years. He said criminals are using the territorial and jurisdictional limitations of the investigating agencies to their advantage by spreading their crimes to at least two countries and investing in a third.

India developing single-shot vaccine for Foot & Mouth Disease by 2030
I
n its effort to eradicate the deadly Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD) in animals by 2030, India has joined hands with the US to jointly develop a new-age single-shot vaccine. According to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) more than 528 million livestock
population are under the constant risk for FMD. The direct loss of this disease is estimated to be about Rs 20,000 crore per year apart from indirect losses. India is producing about 300 million doses of trivalent vaccine per annum, and the demand is expected to go up to 600-800
million doses in the next three-five years once ICAR rolls out FMD vaccination to all the districts. While the virus killed vaccine available needs to be injected twice in cattle in a single year as it provides protection for six months against FMD, the new vaccine hopes to protect cattle
through a single prick. Dr B Patnaik, chief of All India Coordination Project on FMD, said, “This project is a collaboration among Indian Vaccine Research Institute, Bangalore; Plum Island Animal Disease Centre in the US and the All India Coordination project on FMD in Mukteswar. We will start the trials soon, and results will be known in six months.” He added the new recombinant clone adenovirus virus base vaccine will be sturdier, require less cold storage and be more effective than the present vaccine. According to Professor K M L Pathak, deputy-director general of ICAR, FMD is one of the most dangerous transboundary animal diseases. “Since it is difficult to cull animals once infected with the deadly FMD, we are strengthening our vaccination efforts much like the human polio vaccination drive. Our target is to vaccinate 100% animals, mainly goat, sheep, buffalo and cows. Now, vaccination is on in 54 districts. We plan to extend it to 100 districts this year, and then the entire country during the 12th Plan,” Professor Pathak told TOI. Harish Rawat, minister of state for agriculture, said ICAR is keen to establish a highsecurity regional FMD reference laboratory to expedite diagnosis. He added that the “immediate objective of ICAR is to develop
technologies for control of FMD in India with ultimate goal of eradication of FMD by 2030.” Dr Subhash Morzaria from the Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Disease of FAO in Bangkok said that livestock is getting importance for food security in south Asia. “To double the milk production by 2025, India has to control FMD,” Morzaria added. Keith Sumption, secretary of FAO, said that south Asia is one of the seven major areas affected by FMD. FMD is a highly contagious viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals. The disease is characterized by the formation of fluid-filled blisters and erosions in the mouth, nose, teats and feet. Although not very lethal in adult animals, it causes serious production losses and is a major constraint in international trade. It is a complex disease caused by a group of related but distinct viruses, collectively named FMD virus (FMDV). The disease caused by these viruses is clinically indistinguishable and infection with any one serotype does not confer immunity against another. Although mortality is usually low (less than 5%), morbidity can reach 100% and cause severe losses in production. This is why FMD is considered as the single biggest global threat to trade in livestock and livestock products in FMD-free countries.

India economy showing signs of improvement: OECD survey
T
he international economic outlook is showing tentative signs of improvement, with the momentum shift spreading from the United States and Japan to other developed countries, the OECD’s December survey of growth prospects showed on Monday.
AWARD WINNER
Award Winner Chief SATWINDER SAINI Introduced for the first time in Australia
The survey picture was mixed in the euro zone, where seven countries were now “pointing towards a positive change in momentum” while the region’s overall reading dipped marginally. The OECD said its leading indicator pointed to a “positive change ... for the OECD area
as a whole, driven primarily by the United States and Japan, but similar signs are beginning to emerge in a number of other developed economies.” The reading, which seeks to flag turning points, improved for the OECD group of industrialised economies as a whole, rising 0.2 points in December to 100.4, versus its long-term average of 100. India and Russia showed evidence of improvement while encouraging signs that appeared a month or two previously in Japan and the United States were confirmed, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said. The U.S. reading rose for a third month running, this time by 0.7 points to 102.0, while the Japan reading, which stopped dropping three months earlier, rose 0.2 points to 101.9 in December. India’s reading rose 0.6 points even if, at 95.6 in December, it was still well below its long-term average. Russia’s reading rose 0.2 to 102.4. The readings for China, Brazil and the euro area continued to drop, however, with China down 0.5 points at 99.3, Brazil down 0.1 at 93.7 and the euro zone down 0.1 as well at 98.3.
Delhi police detain 3 ATS men, high drama follows
H
igh drama was witnessed in South Delhi when three personnel of Maharashtra’s elite Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) were detained by Delhi Police for nearly three hours after they attempted to forcibly take 13/7 Mumbai blasts accused Naquee Ahmed’s brother Taquee to Mumbai. Taquee, who has raised objections to the arrest of his brother Naquee by the ATS despite being an informer for Delhi Police and Intelligence Bureau, alleged that he had been manhandled by the ATS personnel and was being forcefully bundled inside a waiting vehicle, official sources said. He has filed a complaint with the Okhla Police station against the three ATS officials in which he has alleged illegal tresspassing, physical assault and threat to his life. ATS sleuths arrived at Taquee’s residence here with a notice seeking his appearance before them in Mumbai in connection with the blasts probe as he had failed to appear on previous summons. Taquee asked them to ensure the presence of local police if they wanted to detain him following which the ATS men allegedly started hitting him. This prompted the family of Taquee to call a PCR van which came within minutes. The three ATS men were whisked away to Okhla Police station where they were detained by the police as they had not informed the local police

The notice issued by ATS was under 160 Criminal Procedure Code whereby one is called as a witness and not as an accused. When the same was pointed out to the ATS officials by the Delhi Police, they found themselves cornered. Taquee’s brother Naquee was arrested by the ATS for being allegedly involved in the 13/7 bombings, a charge contested by the family who said he was working as an informer for Delhi Police and Intelligence Bureau and was helping them in locating Yaseen Bhatkal.

Race is on to find life under Antarctic ice sheet
T
he race is on to discover life in the most remote and extreme environment known on Earth. Russia has set the pace, piercing through Antarctica’s icy crust to reach a freshwater lake to try to find ancient or new kinds of life that have adapted to the extremely cold, sunless climate and may shed light on the origins of evolution. Scientists from the United States and Britain are close on Moscow’s heels, sure that their technology will speed analysis of the depths, hidden away for tens of millions of years. If life is found in the icy darkness, it will provide the best answer yet to whether life can exist on other planets like Mars, Jupiter’s moon Europa or Saturn’s satellite Enceladus. “It’s like the first flight to the Moon,” said Valery Lukin, head of the Russian Antarctic mission, comparing the achievement to the U.S. space race victory over the Soviet Union in 1969. After 20 years of stop-go drilling, Russia was the first to pierce through 3,769 metres (12,365 ft) of solid ice to Lake Vostok - the largest and most isolated of over 350 known subglacial lakes, untouched for some 15-25 million years. But the drilling technology it used means Russian scientists will have to go back to collect frozen samples of the lake water for analysis in 2013. That leaves the door open for U.S. or British scientists to steal the lead. Both teams will be equipped with microscopes, enabling them to analyse the freshwater samples each expedition will bring up from two other shallower subglacial lakes. Both will also head to the bottom of the world in the next Antarctic summer from mid-October this year until February; the British team to lake Ellsworth, the Americans to lake Whillans. “They have broken through the ice, opened a window to that world, so we can all more or less follow suit and now do some real science,” said John Priscu, a scientist with the U.S. Whillans Ice Stream Subglacial Access Research Drilling (WISSARD) mission. “Most of the drill is on a vessel right now, so it’s on its way,” he said. “The United States programme will have

“I can say that absolutely nothing fell into the lake,” said Nikolai Vasilyev, who led a team from the St Petersburg Mining University to operate the drilling. Speaking by satellite phone from aboard the Russian icebreaker, the Akademik Fyodorov, Vasilyev said the last hours of drilling were particularly tense. When the breakthrough came after years of work in one of the coldest spots on Earth, it was just hours before the last February 6 flight out before the onset of Antarctica’s winter - where the coldest temperature on Earth was recorded of minus 89.2 Celsius (minus 128.6 Fahrenheit). “We finished at night and the plane was to fly the next day so it was very tense,” Vasilyev said. “It is very, very difficult work. Every centimetre is a step towards something new and unknown.”
microscopes in the field ... We should know what is there as we sample it,” said Priscu, who suspects an oasis of life may lurk under the featureless white, possibly teeming around thermal vents. Unlike the U.S. and British programmes, Russia will have to take a sample of frozen water from the lake home for analysis.
Microbe soup By contrast, the U.S. and British missions will drill with hot water from melted glacier ice that is filtered and UV radiated, which they say is environmental safer. “The other reason we use it is it’s quick,” Siegert said. Where as Russia spent years mechanically chewing through thick ice crystals to reach Lake Vostok, Siegert says it will take his team three days to melt down to lake Ellsworth. The British expedition will then immediately deploy a probe into the lake to collect samples of the water columns and of the bottom sediment. It will have only 24-36 hours to run research before the drill hole freezes up again. Lukin, however, said he has his doubts
over the technology - concerns Russia may put to the U.S. and British missions at the next international panel of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) in June. “Imagine the ancient water of Lake Ellsworth: It is absolutely untouched. Maybe there is life there and a pot of boiling water is poured in,” Lukin said. “Do we want to study micro-biodiversity or microbe soup?” In the future, Russian researchers also plan to explore Lake Vostok with a submersible, he said. The space exploration metaphors are not incidental. Studies of Antarctica’s subglacial lakes also offer insights into the search for life beyond Earth, both in terms of technology, such as drilling and contamination controls, as well as how life evolves and what makes for habitable environments. “Space is very much an integral part of the subglacial lake programme as a next step,” said microbiologist David Pearce with the British Antarctic Survey. Scientists say they suspect the Antarctic waters are supersaturated with oxygen and other gases and may be home to bacteria and single-celled microorganisms called archea. They say that even if the dark waters under Antarctic prove barren, it will be a cutting-edge discovery: The only known sterile place on the planet. “It is learning about the limits of the terrestrial biosphere,” said astrobiologist Charles Cockell of the Open University. “Ultimately who gets the samples really doesn’t matter.”
Scientific explorers A century after the first expeditions to the South Pole, the discovery of Antarctica’s hidden network of subglacial lakes via satellite imagery in the late 1990s set off a new exploratory fervour among scientists the world over, who say the ice cap acts like a blanket trapping the Earth’s geothermal heat. Priscu and British mission scientists denied it was a race, saying they were exploring different Antarctic lakes. But scientists say there is an undeniable draw to be at the cusp of such a discovery. “We are scientific explorers,” said Martin Siegert, head of the University of Edinburgh’s School of Geosciences who is leading the British expedition. “Science is driven by competition, people want to be the first to do things.” Russia has dreamed of dipping a toe into the mysterious Lake Vostok - the world’s third largest body of water - since discovering its Soviet-era Antarctic station sat above it. “This is a great event,” Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Friday, congratulating the Lake Vostok expedition. Presented with a cup of water from the melted borehole ice, Putin joked it was a drink fit for dinosaurs. Despite the success, a bitterness lingers among Russian scientists that they were forced to suspend drilling for years over international criticism of their environmental standards. To answer concerns that drilling fluid could pollute the pristine lake, the Russian team engineered new technology. The Russian borehole, pumped full of kerosene and anti-freeze, hangs like a needle over the lake. But Russia says it used a smaller drill to punch through the last metres, then immediately withdrew it to allow the lake water to percolate up the borehole and freeze there, creating a frozen plug.

Salman misses Rohit Dhawan’s wedding in Goa
The one thing that can safely be said about the mercurial Salman Khan is that he is a yaaron ka yaar. Having done a number
of very successful films with David Dhawan including the careerdefining Judwaa and Biwi No. 1, Salman has over the years, be-
come so close to Dhawan that it’s generally a toss-up as to who’s a closer to David: Govinda or Salman.
Govinda was in Goa for David’s son Rohit’s wedding yesterday (Friday). Salman, alas, couldn’t make it. Shooting in far-off Cuba for Kabir Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger, Salman actually planned to travel back to Goa for a day and attend the wedding before flying back. Says a source close to David, “David was very keen to have Salman over. He spoke to Salman and Salman spoke to Kabir to be allowed to fly back. But the travel plan from Havana to Goa sounded too gruelling. At the moment with Salman’s neurological condition, he’s been advised to cut down on his travel. Also, Kabir’s unit is working on a very tight schedule. And since Salman and Katrina are doing intricate action sequences, stopping the shooting for four days would have meant huge losses for Yash Raj.” Apparently, David told Salman to let it go. Salman agreed. But on condition that his brother Sohail reach the Goan venue for the wedding well in advance to represent bade bhaiyya Salman. Speaking from Goa, David says affectionately, “Yes, Salman really wanted to join us here in Goa. He’s part of my family. But it was impossible for him to travel. Salman’s entire family Arbaaz, Sohail, Baby (sister Alvira) are here. Sohail arrived a day in advance to lend a helping hand.” Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh and
Ranbir Kapoor arrived on Friday morning. The Kapoor family had just returned from Delhi after attending a wedding in Rishi’s daughter’s sasuraal. Says David, “I feel blessed. I haven’t made so much money in my career. But I’ve earned this goodwill that’s reflected in the guest list for the first wedding in my family. All the people, whom I’ve been associated with professionally and personally, are here for my son’s wedding. Sanjay Dutt and Govinda who have been with me from the start of my career, Rishi and Ranbir, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Lolo (Karisma Kapoor), Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, producer Vashu Bhagnani…they are all here.” Earlier David planned a very private family wedding for his son. “But a small wedding was impossible. All these are stars are not just my actors, they’re part of my family.” Ironically, David’s younger son Varun couldn’t get to Goa in advance. He reached on Friday. Explains David, “Varun was shooting with Karan Johar for Student Of The Year. Much as we wanted him here in Goa in advance, he couldn’t join us. But that’s okay. My wife has taken care of every detail. My sons and I only had to attend. Biwi ho to aisi. I am a lucky man.”

Nokia Lumia 710 gets a price cut Windows Phone still to shine on B N
February 2012 Edition
arely a month after its launch, Nokia’s Windows Phone 7-powered Lumia 710 has received a price cut of roughly 20 per cent, making it the cheapest Windows Phone 7.5 handset currently available. Though, Nokia has not officially confirmed the price drop, but several online retailers are selling the phone at a considerable reduced pricing. The company in December last year had launched the much-delayed Windows Phone 7.5 powered handsets, Lumia 800 and Lumia 710, with much fanfare. However, shortly after the launch, Nokia admitted that some units of its flagship model -- Lumia 800 -- suffers from a software bug which is preventing the battery of Lumia 800 from charging to full capacity. According to several reports on the web, Lumia 710 is currently priced around Rs 15,490 on websites like Flipkart and Letsbuy. Online retailer Saholic is selling the smartphone at a further low of Rs 14,899. Nokia had launched Lumia 710 at Rs 18,999, while Lumia 810 launch price was Rs 29,999 approximately. Sporting a 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen with a 480 x 800 pixel resolution, Lumia 710 comes with 5 megapixel AF camera with LED flash and 720p video recording. Other key features include 3G, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi, GPS with A-GPS, Bluetooth with A2DP + EDR, USB 2.0 and FM radio.
okia, the world's largest cellphone maker by volume, is expected to remain barely in the black in the fourth quarter, with its new Windows Phone models yet to compensate for diving sales of its legacy smartphones. Nokia is expected to report fourth-quarter earnings per share falling 82 per cent from a year ago to 0.04 euros and to forecast a weak start to 2012, when it releases results at around 1100 GMT. Nokia unveiled a highprofile strategy shift to Microsoft software on its smartphones last February in a bid to rival to Apple and Google's Android. Nokia's fourth-quarter smartphone sales are seen down 33 per cent from a year ago to 18.7 million handsets, according to a Reuters poll. Analysts said Nokia was expected to sell only 1-2 million of the two Windows Phone models in the quarter, with exact numbers giving little indication on whether Microsoft software could battle against Apple and Google. New chairman Research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech said on Wednesday the Windows Phone share in all of the nine key markets it
measures remained at less than 2 per cent in the fourth quarter, despite the high-profile launch from Nokia. In addition to the quarterly numbers Nokia's board is expected to propose a cut in the dividend and to name Risto Siilasmaa as its next chairman to replace longtime leader, Jorma Ollila, who is due to step down in May. Siilasmaa, a 45-year old entrepreneur, has been a Nokia board member since 2008 and is known in Finland as the founder of software security company FSecure, but has a lower profile outside the country. Most phone makers that have reported so far have disappointed the market, losing market share to Apple, whose sales of 37 million iPhones beat expectations. "The record quarter from Apple suggests Nokia's ... results may have limited room for upside," said analyst Neil Mawston from Strategy Analytics. Nokia's network equipment arm could also disappoint after bigger rival Ericsson stunned the market with a 50 per cent fall in its core profits and warned telecoms operators were likely to remain cautious on spending in the months ahead.

Music Tere Naal Review : Love Ho Gaya
T
ere Naal Love Ho Gaya is a forthcoming romantic-comedy from Tips and UTV Motion Pictures starring beloved reel and (now confirmed to be) real life couple Riteish Deshmukh (Housefull) and Genelia D’Souza (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na). The music of TNLHG has been released as digital singles at irregular intervals for some time now to much applause with the full album going on sale on the 23 January 2012. The duo of Sachin Sanghvi and Jigar Saraiya of Shor In The City and FALTU fame have composed the tracks while Mayur Puri and Priya Panchal have penned the tracks. It features the vocal talents of Atif Aslam (‘Tu Jaane Na’ – Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani), Shreya Ghosal (‘Oo La La’ – The Dirty Picture), Mohit Chauhan (‘Sadda Haq’ – Rockstar), Kailash Kher (‘Chaand Sifarish’ – Fanna) and Sunidhi Chauhan (‘Sufianna’– The Dirty Picture). Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya hits the big screens on 24 February 2012. The soundtrack gets off to a magnificent start with Piya O Re Piya. The one time protégés of Pritam, Sachin-Jigar have combined the things we love about a Pritam love song with what the audiences have come to love about their romantic compositions like ‘Saibo’ (Shor in the City) and ‘Leja Leja’ (Teree Sang). In short, think ‘Pehli Nazar Mein’ (Race) meets Sonu Nighm
February 2012 Edition
‘Saibo’. It’s brilliantly performed by Atif and Shreya who compliment each other beautifully while vocalising Priya Panchal’s simple yet elegant lyrics. The sad version of Piya O Re Piya, if possible, is more endearing than the first. This is mainly due to Atif’s uncanny ability to deliver dynamic emotionally charged renditions. DJ Suketu remixes the track well enough but it does not possess the sugar-spice-and-everything-nice quality that the originals did. Jeene De has Mohit Chauhan doing what he does best. It is a nice number of the contemporary-qawali genre that has become extremely popular recently and therefore the masses will take little to no time falling in love with it. Mayur’s lyrics are pleasant enough and have a welcome hint of folk in them. If you like ‘Pee Loon’ from Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai you’ll love this number. Jeene De – Coffee House Mix has a refreshing acoustic vibe going for it. So if you are getting bored from the influx of Sufis and Qawalis, you will definitely prefer this version of the track. Pee Pa Pee Pa is next, a decent enough, foot-tapping Punjabi number sung well by Priya Panchal and Diljit Dosanjh. However, surprisingly the remix of the track by VIP Records is the better version of the two. It is a lot more energetic and the upbeat blend of Punjabi and western musical
arrangements are certainly more impressive. Mayur’s lyrics, while nothing to rave about, are effective. Tu Mohabbat Hai is essentially a derivative of Piya O Re Piya however it is slightly less impressive than the latter. That being said, it is still a sweet little number. Atif who is well supported by Priya and Monali Thakur (‘Zara Zara Touch Me’ – Race) do justice to Mayur’s simple yet effective lyrics. DJ Suketu’s remix of the track proves to be a good alternative to the original, mainly because it differentiates the track from Piya O Re Piya. Fan Ban Gayi puts the comedy
in romantic-comedy and it does it with a bang thanks to SachinJigar. Mayur’s well penned lyrics which are equal parts comic and romance laced with some nice Marwadi nuances sound great, mainly because Kailash and Sunidhi do a fine job rendering the track. It is definitely a situational number of sorts but given Genelia and Ritiesh’s comic timings it will definitely make for a stellar comic song-dance sequence. The track’s remix is rather unremarkable as there is nothing in it that the original does not offer. In summary, unlike previous Sachin-Jigar albums (Teree Sang, Shor in the City, Hum Tum
Shabana and FALTU) where one could clearly discern their innovation and style, TNLHG sounds more or less like a Pritam soundtrack. While this will definitely work in the album’s favour, Sachin-Jigar personal style will be quietly missed. In any event, TNLHG is an entertaining album from start to finish with Piya O Re Piya being the best of the lot. Jeene De closely follows with Tu Mohabbat Hai (Remix) and Pee Pa Pee Pa bringing up the rear. Fan Ban Gayi will definitely find fans (no pun inteneded) if its picturised with equal gusto.

is ardent fans believe that nothing is impossible for South Indian superstar Rajinikanth, who in his reel-life avatars has stopped speeding bullets with bare hands and oncoming trains with the flick of a leg. Now, in a real-life dedication to the cult figure, a web service firm has created website that runs without Internet -- yes, you read it right. It may sound like another of the millions of Rajinikanth jokes that abound the worldwide web, but a new website dedicated to the superstar runs ‘without an internet connection’. www.allaboutrajni.com is developed by Webchutney’s creative director Gurbaksh Singh. As soon as visitors log onto this particular website, they get to read message that says, “He is no ordinary man, this is no ordinary website. It runs on Rajini Power.” To proceed further into this specially designed website,
visitors must disconnect the Internet connection as stated on the website. Once they disconnect Internet connectivity from their systems, the website takes visitors to another screen that greets with a local Chennai-Tamil slang, which is an informal term to address a buddy: ‘Aye Macha’. As the website is devoted to south India’s Thalaivar, Rajinikanth, it carries the all information related to him. It has included, Rajini’s life story, inside scoops and best Rajini jokes on Internet. Overall, it’s all about Rajini, and only Rajini. The site is designed in such a way to keep the morale of the visitors high throughout one’s stay. With vibrant combinations of colour, foot tapping music, it welcomes readers with funny quotes and illustrations, and other features making a mere resemblance to Rajini style as it sets visitors-on-a-joy-browse. Thus, it comprises all the elements to be hit amongst Rajini fans. When mischief visitors try to defy the basic rule of this Rajini website by reconnecting the Internet, they happen to meet with a humorous error message that reads: “Aiyyo! That was unexpected. To keep browsing, switch off your Internet.” According to website designer

No internet connection required for Rajinikanth’s website
Gurbaksh Singh the website has received a phenomenal response and has gone viral with several thousand hits and counting, along with innumerable shares and mentions across the web, especially on popular social
networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. After a few iterations and testing, they cracked the code required to build the world’s first website that runs without the Internet - a website that runs of-
fline - which is as awesome and unbelievable as on-screen miracles and stunts associated or performed by Rajini himself. After all Rajinikanth, has just become another brand in India that sells like hot cakes.
Apple patents eye-tracking 3D technology for iPhone, iPad, or Mac

D is among the least liked technologies for many geeks. Sure, it can be cool to add an extra dimension to your content, but it’s been so pushed so clumsily by TV and gadget manufacturers that it feels more like a forced gimmick than an exciting new way of interacting with content. The eye strain that it often induces doesn’t exactly help either. With that in mind, you may want to take this with a few extra grains of salt. Apple has patented a method of presenting 3D content on its devices that wouldn’t require glasses or even a stereoscopic display. It uses various sensors that are already in the devices to determine the device’s point in space in relation to the position of your eyes, and adjust the image accordingly. We’ve seen similar approaches to 3D before, but this takes it farther. There’s actually a demonstrative app (called i3D) in the App Store that demonstrates a similar tech. It uses the front facing camera to track your face, and adjust the image to create the illusion of 3D. Apple’s approach, though, makes that look downright primitive. The patent details a method of using a device’s accelerometer, GPS, compass, and gyrometer to establish a precise point in space
for the device. It would then locate the user’s eyes (presumably with the front-facing camera) and combine all of this data to create a precise presentation of 3D content. The patent continues to display how Apple could use layers of UI elements to contribute to the 3D effect. You may not have noticed, but icons on iOS devices’ homescreens have subtle drop
shadows. One simple example of this tech would be to adjust (in real time) the position of the drop shadow in relation to the icon. Voila: instant 3D. One of the coolest parts of Apple’s patent is that the 3D would be activated with a 3D gesture. So, say you’re using your iPhone as usual (2D), and you want to kick it into 3D. Make a Jedi-like wave of your hand in front of the
display, and 3D mode is activated. Of course it’s possible that Apple won’t bother with this. The patent was originally filed in late 2010, as Nintendo was gearing up for the 3DS release and rumors were circulating of HTC using 3D in the next EVO. Both of those devices ultimately struggled to catch on with customers, so Apple may have since scrapped
or shelved these plans. 3D has been hit-or-miss with customers, and it’s probably despised at least as often as it’s embraced. Apple does, however, have a way of making customers embrace features that they hadn’t given much regard to before. It will be interesting to see whether this makes it into the iPhone 6, iPad 4, or mid-2013 MacBook Air.

A twist in the tale of 'Dance India Dance'
H
ere is no way you can miss the Wild Card entry episodes of 'Dance India Dance' simply because you will miss the most spectacular
and jaw dropping acts by Raghav Juyal, more popularly known as Crockroaz. The sensation called Crockroaz is back on DID and will surely create ripples in next
week's episode of the show. The redhead boy from Dehradun who re-christened himself as Crockroaz (from the one who has the creepiness of a cockroach
and the strength of a crocodile) mesmerized everyone with an extraordinary freestyle act with a lot of his trademark 'slow-motion' moves thrown in. Though Raghav's act was the most talked about performance during the audition phase of the show, he unfortunately did not get selected in the Top 18. The mentors verdict were against him and very evidently it didn't go down well with the loyal viewers of DID.So on popular demand, the DID team and Grandmaster Mithun Da decided to give Raghav Juyal aka Crockroaz another chance as a wild card entrant to prove his mettle yet again.Under the able guidance of Master Terence Lewis, Crockroaz gave a dazzling performance and electrified both the mentors as well as the audience. That slow motion moves and the innocence with which Raghav performed, it will for sure leave the television viewers exhilarated and begging for more. Master Terence says, "I wish to apologies to all the viewers since I think we did a big mistake by not selecting Raghav during the auditions. Later, when I saw Raghav perform and the kind of acts that
he is capable of doing, it totally surprised me. Whatever Raghav does, its 80 percent his own creativity and may be 20 percent my inputs. He is an amazing freestyle dancer whose core strength is his body control and his USP being is his slow motion or speed breaking moves. May be there are very many dancers who can dance like him but the feel with which Crockroaz does an act even ace dancers take ages to gain mastery over that. Raghav is a treat to watch and training him is every choreographers delight. If the junta selects him to be a part of the terrific 13, he will give a tough takkar to the other contestants and raise the bar of the competition." It was endearing to see Raghav in his signature slow walk up to Geeta Ma and pull her cheeks. Visibly red Master Geeta, says "Raghav ne phir se gustakhi ki! He again pulled my cheeks! The moment he pulled my cheeks, Terence and Remo who sit on either side of me followed and pulled my cheeks really hard. I would like to warn them, Boys! Please stop doing it, warna mujhse bura koi nahi hoga. Only one person has the right to pull my cheeks and that is Mithun Da.....(blush...bush )!"
igar Khan thinks her sister is a lazy bum and a shopaholic. Gauhar gets upset with her older sibling for not being punctual and for nitpicking about cleanliness. But the Khan sisters, who are not scared to air their differences on national television, don't think such issues are impossible to get a handle on. Sibling rivalry is as ancient as Cain and Abel. And if all of us are honest, it's also pretty common. So, if you have felt that pang of jealousy for your brother or your sister because (s)he is taller, thinner, better-looking, better at studies, has more friends or any of the million other criteria we rate ourselves on, don't sink into a quagmire of guilt. Recent research says that it's not necessary that where there are siblings, there's competition. Yet it shouldn't be underrated because minor problems can turn the adult relationship into a spectacle. Psychologists say the situation is not beyond repair and you needn't carry that envy and anger to your grave. Feelings towards your sibling can be managed as long as you identify them. CAUSE Parents often set this lifelong, and emotionally exhausting race off. When a parent shows more love, gives more attention, or is unable or unwilling to monitor what goes on between the kids, the connection between siblings can suffer. Unwittingly, but sometimes quite cussedly, family members compare you and the rest of the brood. And guess what? No two people are alike so someone's got to suffer in this comparison. "The sibling is usually the closest individual approximately of one's
February 2012 Edition
age whose accomplishments are easily visible because of proximity and with whom comparisons can often unwittingly happen," says Dr Anuradha Sovani from the Department of Applied Psychology, University of Mumbai. Nigar points out that she always felt squashed because she was the middle one among five. "Gauhar is the youngest and mama's favourite. But we need to realise that a parent is a human being and all five fingers are not the same. Over time, I learned to stop expecting mom to understand," she says. Gauhar acknowledges that the attention was divided unfairly and appreciates that her sister has not held the grudge. GROW UP As you grow older, use your own brain to resolve the issue. When working hard to express individuality, use it to your advantage by understanding that you don't have to internalise comparisons. There are, after all, advantages to learning how to resolve your problem with your sibling. You can learn conflict resolution only when faced with a conflict and sibling rivalry provides a safe and supervised place to practise this. The second important lesson that this rivalry teaches is that the world is not fair. Besides, relationships do evolve (or take a turn for the worse if problems are not addressed). "There is a four-year gap between us," says Gauhar. "When I was younger I was overprotective about her. Then I realised she has to have her own experiences and learn from them. Now we communicate like friends." Nigar agrees
that both have let go of that period. "I wanted space and she felt the need to protect me. But now sometimes there is a role reversal and she needs my advice." The first step to managing anything lies in identifying it. "Acknowledge the feeling rather than suppress it and suffer guilt," says Sovani. "Once you can come to terms with the 'why', try to achieve what you think you lack in. If your sibling is sociable, learn the skill, rather than envy him/her for their social circle. No point pining for the reward that accrues from their strengths without trying to acquire the strengths." Counsellor Varkha Chulani says emotional education is critical. "We need to relearn the core attitude that there is no need to put yourself down and elevate the other person, or vice-versa. Challenge the dialogue in your head and unlearn that each one is not good enough in itself." If you have tried everything and your sibling can't let go of the negative feelings, there is cause for concern. Rational jealousy is one thing but excessive jealousy is a symptom of an emotionally disturbed person. "If it gets unhealthy, distance yourself and protect your own sanity," says Chulani. This does not mean you should stop extending empathy. "Treat it like healthy competition," says Gauhar. Remember you love each other. "It's important to introspect and rationalise. There is finally no right or wrong. But if you value your relationship, you have to not let your ego get in the way," says Nigar.

How to drink and not add calories N
ever thought it was possible to drink and watch your weight at the same time? It’s time to get smart about it. No one can really ignore the empty calories additional sugar alcohol and its mixers bring into your body, but there are a few tricks to enjoying an occasional drink and keeping the love handles at bay. Here are a few dietfriendly drinking tips that can come in handy, especially as the festive and barbecue seasons comes calling.
February 2012 Edition
Choose wisely There are a few diet-friendly alcohols that pack in fewer empty calories and weight clinchers than others. If you are watching your weight and counting calories, you don’t have to sit sipping juices at parties. Don’t forget portion control in addition to selecting the right drink. A few good choices (less than 100 calories) are - a shot (25ml) of gin with diet tonic, a shot of white rum with a soda, a small glass of wine or champagne, or a single measure of whisky or brandy. Opt for light beer. Keep away from cream liqueurs or sangrias since they ride heavy on the calorie count.
If it’s a pre-meal lunch or dinner drink you’re having, avoid these snacks altogether. Try waiting for your starters to arrive before you start drinking. If nibbles are necessary, breadsticks are a good option.
Pace yourself Alternate alcoholic drinks with mineral water or diet soft drinks. Make a glass of wine last longer by turning it into a spritzer - add sparkling water or lemonade. Not only does this reduce your chances of getting tipsy, it also hydrates the body and reigns in far fewer calories than the other heavy weights.
Be prepared Avoid alcohol induced binges and cut down on calorie intake overall by being prepared. Fortify yourself with a healthy breakfast and lunch based on starchy carbohydrates (bread, rice, pasta, potatoes or cereal) along with a little protein (lean meat, fish or soya bean). If you think you won’t be able to eat while you drink, have
a pre-drink meal or light snack, ideally with some fat, to line the stomach and slow down the alcohol absorption into your system. A hearty sandwich or a bowl of porridge or yogurt is ideal. Steer clear A handful of peanuts have around 150 calories and a bag of chips has a deadly 183 calories.
One at a time Don’t let others top up your glass. Finish a whole glass of your drink before you get another. This will ensure you know exactly how much you are consuming during the course of your session. Morning after If the next morning, you feel like you grossly overshot your limit and are nursing a headache, there is a healthier option for a fry-up that doesn’t call for oodles of calories. Try a lighter option of poached or scrambled eggs on a whole wheat bread. Eggs contain cysteine, which is siadi to break down the destructive chemicals that build up in the liver after a night of drinking. Milk, yogurt with fresh fruits, and poha are also simpler, healthier alternatives that will help ease your discomfort without much drama.

Manali
T
here are various ways of getting around in Manali, if you are not already travelling with your own vehicle. Most tourists hire a taxi (various kinds available), which takes you around to all the sight seeing spots in and around Manali (Rohtang, Manikaran etc). It costs about Rs. 1500 per day, or little over Rs. 3000 if you book together for 3 days (in the peak season) The second most common way is to hire a motorbike. There are many places where you can hire a motorbike (easy to find if you ask around), and is the most common mode of transport for foreigners. Both cruiser bikes like Bullet and sport bikes from Honda, Bajaj, Yamaha etc are easily available, though Bullet is the most commonly seen one on the roads. Rates hover around Rs. 500-600 per day in the peak season, but much discounted at other times. A good place worth a look will be in Bike rentals Manali office in Vashisht 9816044140, have a good selection of Royal Enfields and Pulsars. Also ‘Tinku’ Bike mechanic near old Manali bridge is an honest shop for bike rentals. Public transport is not so good. There are cheap bus services,

but they are not so frequent. Yet, if you are going to stay for a long time, it is better to know the times and use them, as other modes of public transport and exorbitant compared to bus. For e.g., auto rickshaws take Rs. 200 from manali mall road to Solang valley, while the bus will cost you just Rs. 10. Weather Minimum temp could be below -05 C from Oct till March. Dec Jan and Feb are coldest months. Rest of the year the minimum temperature would be between 15 to 20 C.
chards all around Manali, it’s often possible to find apple cider. Besides this, there is alcohol available in bars, larger restaurants and the larger hotels. Kullu-Manali Valley is known as fruit bowl of India. Himcoop Juice Bar at The Mall Manali is one of the well know corner shop since 1972 selling 100% Natural Apple Juice and fruit drinks made from local fruits besides some syrups known as Fruit Crush to carry home to prepare fruit drinks after deluting with fresh water. Himcoop Juice Bar is located on the Main Mall as one of the corner shop next to Temple.
Drink The locals drink two kinds of alcoholic beverages: Lugdi (plains) or Chang (Himalayan), a kind of crude beer made from fermented rice or barley and Sharab (plains) or Arak (Himalayan), an alcoholic drink distilled from Lugdi/chang. Arak can also be made from jaggery or apples or any other fruit. It might be an interesting experience to visit a local home when the ladies make arak (quite regularly). You can sit in the fields where the ladies make it, have hot water from the distilling to wash with and “test” the product at frequent intervals. Because there are apple or-
Eat Manali market is key place for eatables. Right from chat to Indian (veg/nonveg) to international cuisine like Italian/Chinese are available in the main market which is just opposite the Manali Bus stand. The mall road has a variety of eating options ranging from stalls and dhabas to fancy restaurants. Deeper into the lanes of the town, one can find more local eating places, catering to special tastes and habits ranging from Tibetan food, to Vaishnavi Dhabhas. Manali, at the northern end of the Kullu Valley in Himachal Pradesh, is a hill station situated at a height of 2050 m (6398 ft) in the Himalayas. Situated on the Beas river (Vyaas in Hindi) and near its source, it is a popular tourist spot for Indians in summer and a magical, snow-covered place in winter. A staging point for a number of treks (Beas Kund, Chandrakhani Pass) and sports such as white-water rafting, Manali is also on the road to Ladakh via the valley of Lahaul and Spiti and rohtang pass which is main attraction near manali.
places to hang out in the evening. It has a great collection of restaurants/bars and shops. It is also not crowded like the Mall Road, with the crowd consisting mostly of foreigners. Do Get your photos clicked with either rabbits or yaks (near the Hidimba Temple). It will cost about 10-20 rupees (0.5$) for a single photo. One can also enjoy paddle boating in a fun park near Hidimba temple. River rafting, skiing, zorbing, trekking, snow scootering, and river crossing. One of the best adventure companies is the High Himalayan Adventure, based in Vashisht village. Paragliding- it is quite popular in Manali, especially in the peak season. The scene is located at Solang Valley. There are multiple levels, starting from the basic 1 minute flying for Rs. 450 (the most common), progressing to a more fun 5 minute flight for Rs. 1500. But the ultimate is the half an hour flight for Rs. 2500, for which they take you up almost halfway to rohtang, and bring you back to solang all the way by paragliding. In such a long flight, wind plays a big role, and sometimes it is not possible to fly all the way to solang, something to keep in mind while going for it. Generally,
later in the day you go for it, better are the chances you will do the whole flight. Rock climbing- there are some fabulouzs routes, however, go with a reputable company that can provide yaoua suitable gear, otherwise this can become a dangerous sport. Look for the bright orange building across from Pizza Olive. The company also does abseiling trips, in which you can swing down into 9 tiers of a waterfall using rock-climbing equipment. Another contact is Dave Morahan (9805346007) who takes you to all kind of rock climbing trips for all difficulty levels, and is quite skilled himself. If interested in books, there is a bookshop in the main town near the Post Office called Bookworm. It has a decent selection of books. Early morning walks as manali is best enjoyed before the town wakes up. Get in By plane The nearest airport is Bhuntar ( Kullu ) Airport ( Tel: 01902265037, 265603), 50 km from Manali, 10 km from Kullu, about two hours away. Indian Airlines and Kingfisher airlines operate flights to Kullu from Delhi and Chandigarh. From the airport the best option to go to Manali is by Pre Paid taxi which is easily available there.

[Bolly wood Celebrity]
Subhash K. Jha talks about
Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu Christmas comes earlier
S
he is fun, feisty and …well, full-on. He needs to loosen up. Urgently!! Son of two stuffedup high-society mannequins Rahul Kapoor is a repressed child going into depressive manhood. Since this is a rom-com, and one sparkling with vigour with warmth and what-have-youth, you know Rahul will meet Ms. FunFeisty-Full-On before Reel 1 is done. Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (EMAET) comprises a series of elegantly-written, confident but never in-your-face scenes about what happens when two opposites meet in a city as all-embracing as Las Vegas. Of course, sparks fly. Well-neon facts, these. But neither Kareena Kapoor nor Imran Khan is in a hurry to set off a combustive fire. There is a whole lot of tranquility in the way the relationship between the firebrand and the nerd is built. The rough edges are largely sacrificed on the editing table. The progression of the relationship is seamless and smooth.Unlike, say, Siddharth Anand’s Anjaana Anjaani where the on-screen rapport between the protagonists suffered because one of the actors was constantly trying to steal scenes from the other, here neither Kareena nor Imran is in a hurry to hijack a single moment from one another. This is one of the most immaculately cast romantic comedies in recent
times. Sure, Kareena has an edge. Her character is less passive than Imran’s and she some of the film’s best lines. The actress, back in form after two marginalized mammoth odes to machismo (Bodyguard, Ra.One) turns in a perfectly-modulated performance. Her character is not so much a portrait of warmth and radiance as it is an illustration of perfect asymmetry. Here’s a woman who enjoys the chaos that she creates in her universe. She lives by her own rules. And before the film is done she teaches Imran Khan’s character how to tell your parents to buzz off before it’s too late. Rules be stuffed down the toilet. Imran is good at playing the attentive, obedient, faithful boyfriend. He did the invisible-halo act effectively in Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na, Break Ke Baad and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. He does it even better here, probably because of the company he keeps in this film. There are episodes in this boy-meets-girl, girltweaks-boy’s-life saga that leave you smiling for a very long time. Indeed EMAET is a high-concept ever-grin mellow-drama. You just can’t stop grinning at the sparkling warmth and the cute quips shared by the lead pair. Curiously, debutant director Shakun Batra opts for an open ending. Finally we only know that some
day Rahul might win the feisty Rihana over. But here’s the glimmer of hope. Even if he doesn’t win her over he gets to keep her company for as long as they share a common ground. Here is a film that doesn’t score high on ground-breaking ideas on romantic relationships. Instead it weaves itself into commonplace ideas on love romance and commitment and comes up with vignettes of terrific sincerity. A lot of the film’s gently persuasive energy comes from the discernible respect that the lead pair has for each other’s space as actors. No one-upmanship here, thank you. Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah too are delightful as Imran’s la-didah parents. They reminded me of Pran and Sonia Sahni in Raj Kapoor’s Bobby. In comparison Kareena’s Catholic family comes across as too casual to be real. Within two weeks Dharma Productions has given us two diametrically opposite genres of cinema from two debutant directors. If Karan M alh ot r a’s
Agneepath took us back to the grand formulistic revenge drama of the 1970s EMAET takes us into the future of Bollywood where actors don’t have to sing. They don’t have to act. They just have to be as normal as people in love tend to be. This is a p erc ept ib ly urbane love story, told with in a style shorn of gimmicks. There is no attempt to capture our attention. The narrative gets us watching without getting sweaty with anxiety. A very chilled-out romcom indeed.

t’s finally in place. Kangna Ranaut and not Vidya Balan will be playing gangster Manya Surve’s girl in Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout At Wadala. There was plenty of backand-forth over the matter. Gupta initially wanted Vidya Balan for the part. But Vidya was unable to say either yes or no to the project. Finally after a few months of waiting Gupta and his co-producers Balaji took the
decision last week to go with Kangna Ranaut for the role. Explaining the reason for his decision Gupta says, “We’ve opted for Kangna after a great deal of deliberation. Kangna seems physically and emotionally right to play Manya Surve’s girl.” “John Abraham and Kangna have never been paired together,” adds Gupta hinting that the VidyaJohn pair had already been done (in Nikhil Advani’s Salaam-e-
Ishq). Interestingly, this won’t be Kangna’s first role as a gangster’s girl. She started her career playing an on-screen version of Abu Salem’s girlfriend in Anurag Basu’s Gangster. More recenty, Kangna starred as a fictional Haji Mastan’s girl in Milan Luthria’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. The trick, we might add, is to make this part different from the earlier two gangster films.
Says Gupta, “The girl Kangna will play in Shootout At Wadala has two different looks and phases to carry off. First there will be the girl during college and then later after her involvement with Manya Surve, Kangna would have to portray a more mature woman. We’ve already discussed her looks for both the stages in the character’s evolution.” Gupta says Kangna has been given two reference points.
“I’ve basically told her that we want Smita Patil’s look from Namak Halaal and Shakti. I want to capture Kangna in that same earthy raw light that she so effortlessly projected in her earlier films.” Kangna, apparently, has taken the role of Manya Surve’s girlfriend to heart and has already started her own homework on the emotional and physical look for the part.

hile credit must be given to writerdirector Rumy Jaffery for focusing on the issue of corruption noble intentions don’t necessarily make a notable work of art. Certainly Gali Gali Chor Hai(GGCH) must have sounded amusing and topical on paper. It is a savagely stinging satire on the harassment of the average lawabiding middleclass man, played with arresting earnestness by Akshaye Khanna, in the hands of various touts, middlemen, law enforcers, goons and politicians all of whom infest the tranquil city of Bhopal with the destructive determination of termites eating into a ‘system’ that has long ceased to be if any consequence , moral or ethical. While the script has some sparkling vignettes and scenes taken from the portrait of a common man trapped in the
wheels of a fluctuating fortune, the treatment of the theme of corruption is staid, prosaic uninspiring and frequently bland. The screenplay unfolds in segments and episodes that could belong to a long-running government-sponsored serial on Doordarshan, made with the express purpose of cleaning the bureaucracy’s image. Lamentably, for all his sincerity, Akshay Khanna’s Bharat remains clueless about what the script hopes to achieve by showing the character running in and out of police stations and court premises, except to project the helplessness of the common man into a script that seeks to desperately extract creative juices out of the bourgeois desperation which has baffled, bewildered, frustrated and destroyed the under-privileged classes the world over.

Abhishek Bachchan in Prakash Jha’s next titled Chakravyuha
P
Abhishekh bachan
rakash Jha’s next film is about the Naxalite movement. But it is not a remake of K.V. Anand’s Tamil political film Ko. Exasperated beyond belief, Prakash says, “I don’t know where this rumour started. And now the newspapers are reporting it. My new film is about the Naxal movement. But my film has got absolutely nothing to do with Ko. It’s an original subject. In fact I’m away from Mumbai right now writing the film.” In Prakash Jha’s Chakravyuha, which the director starts shooting in a month, Abhishek Bachchan is cast as a Naxalite. It’s the biggest challenge of the young actor’s career and one for which he has started preparing. Jha has recommended Naxal literature to Abhishek. This is probably the first film since Mani Ratnam’s Guru for which Abhishek has undertaken extensive research. The shooting will take place in Prakash’s patent location Bhopal, and in the jungles of Madhya Pradesh. The director was actually supposed to start a film Satyagrah with Abhishek’s father and the director’s favourite actor Ajay Devgn in January. Apparently, that film
was postponed to the secondhalf of 2012 because of the unavailability of Devgn’s dates. Protests Prakash, “In fact I had Ajay’s dates from July since he finishes Son Of Sardar by then. But my film can’t be shot in the rains. I’ve to shoot Satyagrah in winter, so we’re shooting it in November and December 2012.” This is the first year in his career when Prakash Jha would be directing two films. “And both are tough to shoot, not because of the big cast but because the films take up issues that need very careful handling,” says Jha. While Chakravyuha is about the Naxalite movement, Satyagrah deals with politics and corruption. Prakash Jha was aware that Basu Chatterjee had made a film called Chakravyuha back in 1978. He recently met Basuda who in his habitually affable way said, ‘Han han le lo le lo’. But Prakash was taken aback when he got to know another producer had registered the title Ek Aur Chakravyuha.” Says Prakash, “Chakravyuha is the best and only appropriate title for my film. I can’t think of calling it by any other name. Fortunately we have the title now.”

Hrithik's Agneepath success bash
Hrithik Roshan's latest release Agneepath broke all box office opening records by making Rs.23 crores net on its first day. Hrithik threw a party at his house to celebrate the success of his film. The party was attended by the film's cast and crew as well as his close friends and family.
T
he strategy of releasing the film on a Thursday--January 26--to cash in on a public holiday, and the buzz surrounding the promos, appears to have worked for the makers of the Hrithik Roshan-starrer Agneepath. Distributors, theatre owners and tradesmiths are unanimous in their opinion that the remake of Dharma Productions’ 1990 Amitabh Bachchan starrer is Bollywood’s biggest opener till date. It has broken the first-day record of Salman Khan’s Bodyguard (2011), registering estimated figures that range between Rs 25 and Rs 26 crore. Bodyguard is estimated to have collected Rs 21 crore on the day of its release. Theatre occupancy on the day one of Agneepath was between 90 and 95% in most cinemas across the country. Producer Karan Johar had apparently insisted that no exhibitor doubles the ticket

rates, which is often the practice with event pictures over the first weekend. Says Sunil Punjabi of the Cinemax chain of multiplexes, “In recent times, most films haven’t had the kind of advance bookings that Agneepath had, despite it being promoted on an average budget. By Thursday evening, we had sold almost 50% of the tickets, and this was not just for Friday, but Saturday as well. We have also got bulk bookings for the coming week.” That there were no films competing at the box-office, and no new film had released in the previous weekend either seems to have helped Agneepath’s showing as well. Trade pundit Amod Mehra says, “Several multiplexes ran multiple screenings on Thursday, owing to high demand. The movie is two hours and 45 minutes long but since there is nothing else playing, most exhibitors were happy

Bipasha Says, Emraan And I Will Make A Perfect Match in Razz 3 B
ollywood actress Bipasha Basu is upbeat about her first 3D film. A decade after Raaz, she returns to the Raaz franchise, says a media report. Raaz 3D is scheduled for release on July 6. Says Bipasha basu: “It's a challenging role and I'm told it will be a difficult film to shoot. "We will have to do it in bits and pieces because of the technology involved. "But it's still very exciting for me as an actor, more so after Hollywood 3D specialist Joe Hagg, who designed the visual effects for James Cameron's Avatar (2009), has been roped in for 20 minutes of SFX for our movie. Wow, I can't wait to put on my 3D glasses!" "It's nice to be back with Vikram, he's a good friend,“ she says. Her co-star in Raaz 3 is Emraan Hashmi. On being reminded about Woh Lamhe (2006) Bipasha says: “I've seen Emraan from the time that he used to work as an assistant director on the sets. "Those days he looked like a little boy and since I was a lot more voluptuous then, I looked older than him. "But in the 10 years since, he has matured. He is a seasoned actor now. And having lost a lot of weight, I look younger too. I'm convinced we will make a perfect match in Raaz 3D. "

Hope BCCI, Sahara sign truce, says Sourav Ganguly

ith the fate of Pune Warriors hanging in uncertainty, those associated with the IPL franchise are keeping their fingers crossed. Sourav Ganguly, former India captain and mentor of the team, hopes BCCI and Sahara, who owned the team before withdrawing in a huff earlier this month, will sort out their differences and things will be back on track. Ganguly spoke to TOI on the issue. Excerpts from the chat: Do you think the current crisis between Sahara and BCCI will be sorted out? Hopefully, it will be sorted out and we will get to play cricket. I am looking forward to this year's IPL and I hope the bosses of Sahara and BCCI settle this one out. Remember, there are quite a lot of players who are waiting to take the field. Subrata Roy has said that you are the one who is going to take a call... The main decision lies with the big bosses as I have said earlier. We have to wait and see till the time a BCCI-Sahara meeting happens. Even if you play, you will be without Yuvraj Singh... Everyone knows it'll be difficult to field the side without Yuvraj, especially when every team has a top Indian cricketer. He is our

oming off her 13th women’s doubles title at the Pattaya Open, Sania Mirza on Monday retained her career-best seventh position in the latest WTA doubles rankings. Sania, along with her Australian partner Anastasia Rodionova, had clinched the women’s doubles title at the Pattaya Open on Sunday to stay inside the top-10 in doubles rankings and if she is able to retain her top 10 spot till June 21, she will get a direct entry into the London Olympics. position. The top-64 players will get a direct entry into the singles draw of the Olympics and if Sania fails to get into that bracket, AITA will ask the organising committee for a wildcard entry. In the ATP singles’ rankings, Somdev Devvarman, who did not have a ideal start to the year as he was forced to pull out of both Chennai Open and Australian Open because of shoulder injury, slipped to 120th position. Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna retained their seventh and 11th spot, respectively, in the ATP doubles rankings, while Mahesh Bhupathi gained a spot to climb to 15th position.
main player and I am sure he is going to come back with a bang. Can Pune Warriors be a genuine title contender without players like Yuvraj? It all depends on how well we play. This format is really unpredictable and I am sure if we have a good team, we are going to fight till the end. It's important to stay positive all the time. Who are the key players in your side? There are quite a few of them Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Graeme Smith, Angelo Mathews and Mitchell Marsh are some of the important players. And if we are able to put to use all our resources well, I don't see why we can't produce results. You had a fairly good Ranji season. How do you keep yourself fit? I played around 6 to 7 Ranji games this season and there was no problem with my fitness. While I was doing commentary during the India-Australia Test series for a month, I kept doing my fitness training. Suggestions for improve Test record... We are going to do well for sure. It was a bad phase and I am sure the team will start doing well once again. I haven't seen the board's agenda. Once I've studied it, I will give my suggestions.
Force India eyeing 5th spot: Di Resta I
t was all new for Paul Di Resta as he embarked on his rookie year in Formula One in 2011. His rise though has been rapid, retaining his Sahara Force India spot for the 2012 season. The 25-year-old from Bathgate, Scotland, got a taste of VJM05 in the season’s first testing session in Jerez. Di Resta spoke to TOI about the upgrades in the 2012 car and the team’s aspirations for the season. Is there extra pressure to perform this season? It’s not as if I’ve taken over because we were teammates last season. And there’s always pressure in Formula One, that’s the nature of the sport. But I feel ready for this season - I’m not a rookie any more. I have a year of experience under my belt and I feel ready for the challenge ahead.
in the VJM05? The most important thing is stability, which should allow us to continue where we left off last season. The finer details of the car are another step forward and the team back at Silverstone have put a lot of hours into the design and development of the car. I think we have a good foundation to build on and will then start introducing the upgrades from the first race. How tough will it be to overtake Lotus now? The team is targeting fifth in the championship so that would mean trying to beat Lotus - a team that has a huge amount of experience and a former world championship-
winning team. So we need to up our game again if we want to do that. The position that we put ourselves in last year is a good base to build on and hopefully we can make the difference. You met up with your cousins - IndyCar drivers - Dario and Marino Franchitti... It’s always good to see them. I did some training with them before the test and then they came to the track, just as they did last year. They like to keep an eye on what’s happening in Formula One and it’s nice to have them about and have their support.
The design of the 2012 car looks ugly. Will the loss of down force affect the performance? It’s the same for all the teams so it’s all relative. It means that there is a bit less downforce at the rear of the car, but the team has worked hard to make up for that elsewhere. What are the new upgrades

We are chasing victory, says Dhoni
P
leased with his own showing, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni termed the timing of his match-winning six in the final over against Australia at the Oval on Sunday as special. “This six was very special. The timing was perfect. The World Cup six was too but we could have done that with singles,’ said Dhoni speaking soon after the match. When asked if this was the biggest hit that he’s hit, Dhoni smiled to say, “I have hit a bigger
February 2012 Edition
one but that was when I wasn’t playing for India.’ The captain, who made an unbeaten 44, however, admitted that his team could still have made a better job of the chase. ‘Our batsmen played a few shots that we shouldn’t have played. If you get those shots it looks good, but if they don’t pay off then it’s a stupid shot,’ said Dhoni referring to the strokes that young guns Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina played when India looked to be cruising. “We will need to address this.
You don’t want to lag behind in the league stage if you are looking to make the finals. On the road to final you need to concentrate on each game,’ added Dhoni. On his part, Man-of-the-Match Gautam Gambhir said, “Any win against Australia in Australia is important. As for me, contributing in the team’s success is crucial. Thankfully, Dhoni finished it off in the end. He is always calm when he is in the ring.’ Gambhir, though, admitted that the match could have been won
much earlier. “We should have finished the game in the 48th over. We shouldn’t taken it to the 50th. This is my personal observation.’ Gambhir, who made 92, departed in the 35th over and soon India were on the back foot, chasing another 92 runs from the last 15 overs. It was down to 13 from the last over when a six from Dhoni sealed the win. “But then it’s easier said than done. There is far more pressure on the players who are in the middle. It’s their turn to take
the decision. I don’t know why he (Dhoni) delayed it-perhaps he wanted somebody else to take the responsibility. Still the most important shot in the match was made by him,’ said Gambhir. “If I was there, I wouldn’t have looked to take it till the last over. I would have looked to finish one or two overs before. There is far more pressure even if you need 5-6 runs from the final over. But then we are different human beings, you think differently.’

Healthy Aging - Ayurveda A
ging is a complex and common process in the human body, a sum total of changes that occur regularly in a living organism with the passage of time and lead to decreasing ability to survive stress, increasing functional impairment and growing probability of death. Ayurveda, the Indian traditional medicine, describes aging with great details. Aging in Ayurveda is known as “Jarā” defined as that which has become old by the act of wearing out “jīryati iti jarā”. It is synonymed as “vārdhakya” meaning increasing age. According Ayurvedic medicine human life is divided into—“Balya” childhood (up to the age 16 years); youth and middle age [from 16 to 60 years (charaka) or 70 years (sushruta) and exhibits progressively the traits of growth (vivardhamana, 16–20 years of age), youth (youvana, 20–30 years), maturity (sampoornata, 30– 40 years), deterioration (parihani, 40 years onwards) which gradually sets in up to 60 years]; old age, wherein after 60–70 years the body elements, sense organs, strength, and so forth, begin to decay. While describing aging, Ayurveda takes in consideration Prana (life
Dr. C.R.S. Kumar energy that performs respiration, oxygenation and circulation). It governs two other subtle essence ojas and tejas. Ojas (the essence of the seven dhatus or bodily tissues) is responsible for the auto-immune system and mental intelligence, it is necessary for longevity. Displaced ojas creates the kapha-related disorders and decreased ojas creates vata-related reactions. Tejas (the essence of a very subtle fire or energy) governs metabolism through the endocrine system. Agni (central fire or energy source in the body) promotes digestion, absorption and assimilation of food. Tejas is necessary for the nourishing and transformation of each dhatu. Aggravated tejas, burns away ojas reducing immunity and overstimulating pranic activity. Aggravated prana produces degenerative disorders in the dhatus. Lack of tejas results in over production of unhealthy tissue and obstructs the flow of pranic energy. Just as it is essential to maintain balance amongst the tridosha— vata, pitta, kapha principles of motion, metabolism, structure, respectively, the dhatus and the three malas (bodily wastes); it is also important for longevity that
prana, ojas and tejas remain in balance. The tridosha play a very important role in the maintenance of cellular health and longevity. Kapha maintains longevity on the cellular level. Pitta governs digestion and nutrition. Vata, which is closely related to pranic life energy, governs all life functions.
Proper diet, exercise and lifestyle can create a balance among these three subtle essences, ensuring long life. Panchakarma: Detoxification and Rejuvenation process: Ayurveda describes several processes to address control and prevention of aging. Pancha
Karma is one of the popular rejuvenation and detoxification process that consists of three stages including Purva Karma (pretreatment), Pradhana Karma (primary treatment) and Paschat Karma (posttreatment). Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation) are the two Purva Karma procedures. The four Pradhan Karma include Vamana (medical emesis), Virechana (purgation), Nasya (nasal administration), Basti (enema). A school of thought from Sushruta also considers Raktamokshana (bloodletting) as one of the Pancha Karma. Paschat Karma (posttreatment) mainly deals with Ahar (diet) regimens, Vihar (exercise) and use of healthpromoting Rasayana and other medicines. There have been few studies indicating physiological benefits to Panchakarma. Ayurveda describes various rejuvenative therapies with help of special class of medicinal preparations called Rasayana that are believed to rebuild the body, mind, prevent degeneration and postpone aging or rather reverse the aging process. Charaka has described two methods of rejuvenation, the first method—
intramural (kutipravesika) required the subject to remain inside a chamber in isolation and second method which was less rigorous and was carried out in open air—extramural (vatatapika). The intramural method is suitable for healthy, self-controlled, wise, strong and affluent persons whereas extramural method is advisable for others. In intramural method, a special cottage is constructed on an auspicious land facing east or north, it is safe and supplied with all the necessary articles for treatment and the procedure is started on an auspicious day. In extramural therapy, it’s basically the use of various medicinal plant formulations. According to Ayurveda, the practice of yoga, which is a disciplined science of life, is a very important, natural, preventive measure to ensure good health. By : Dr C.R.S.KUMAR,

Banana benifits B
ritish and Italian researchers have found that eating three bananas cuts the risk of a stroke. They said that having one banana for breakfast, one for lunch and one in the evening would provide enough potassium to reduce the chances of suffering a blood clot on the brain by around 21 per cent. The findings suggest that thousands of strokes could be prevented by the consumption of other potassium-rich foods such as spinach, nuts, milk, fish and lentils, reports the Daily Mail. Although some previous studies have suggested bananas could be important for controlling blood pressure and preventing strokes, results have not always been consistent. In the latest research, scientists analysed data from eleven different studies - dating back to the mid-Sixties and pooled the results to get an
February 2012 Edition
overall outcome. They found a daily potassium intake of around 1,600 mg, less than half the UK recommended daily amount for an adult of 3,500mg, were enough to lower stroke risk by more than a fifth. The average banana contains around 500 milligrams of potassium, which helps to lower blood pressure and controls the balance of fluids in the body. Too little potassium can lead to an irregular heartbeat, irritability, nausea and diarrhoea. Researchers from the University of Warwick and the University of Naples said, "Potassium intake in most countries is well below the recommended daily amount." But if consumers ate more potassiumrich foods and also reduced their salt intake, the annual global death toll from strokes could be cut by more than a million a year. The study has been published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Understanding watery and dry eyes: D
o you feel a burning sensation in your eyes every now and then? If your answer to most of these questions is yes, then this post is meant for you. Today, Dr Pravin Krishna Vaddavalli, Associate Ophthalmologist at L V Prasad Eye Institute helps us understand the concept behind watery and dry eyes. Understanding the concept of dry eyes: Mild to moderate dry eye is quite common but the patients who really need treatment for this condition are the ones who are symptomatic. However, severe dry eyes need careful evaluation and management. Some patients with severe dry eyes may have associated dry mouth and other systemic complaints like joint pains. In
some cases, dry eyes can be vision threatening and need careful management. They can result in infections and can result in permanent visual disability. Causes and common symptoms of dry eyes: Dry eye can occur either due to increased evaporation of tears from the eye or due to reduced production of tears. Common symptoms for dry eyes include a burning sensation, tiredness of the eyes, and sensation of a foreign body in the eyes, redness and irritation of the eyes. Who is at risk and what precautions are required to avoid mild dry eyes? Mild dry eye is prevalent among the majority of computer users, especially those who work for long hours without
breaks. Known as computer vision syndrome, it can be avoided by taking frequent breaks, keeping the monitor below the eye level, avoiding the direct draft of a fan or air conditioner and keeping oneself hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Using lubricating eye drops at intervals helps to keep the eyes moist and solves the problem to a large extent. Managing severe dry eyes: Severe dry eyes need a comprehensive approach. From increasing moisture in the eyes by using lubricating eye drops to using punctual plugs to reduce the loss of tears from the eyes, there are several approaches. Some patients may require oral medication and more advanced therapy in the form of
cyclosporine eye drops. Common causes of watery eyes: The commonest cause for watery eyes is a foreign body like dust in the eye. Sudden onset of watering of the eyes is a way of telling us that they need attention. Other common causes include infections like conjunctivitis and any inflammation in the eyes. Watering of the eyes can also result from a block in the outflow pathway for tears and may require surgical intervention. Are watery eyes a sign of something serious? Gradual onset of watering of the eyes is not a cause for concern but does help to consult with an eye doctor. Sudden onset of watering of the eyes needs attention. Water-
ing of the eyes is a response of the eyes to either flush out an irritant or an indication that the eye is inflamed. Watery eyes can occur in newborn and older people: Watery eyes can occur in newborns and infants commonly due to a congenital obstruction of the outflow pathway for tears. It may be associated with discharge and may occur in both eyes at the same time. This condition needs consultation with an eye doctor and may require surgical opening of the block in the outflow tear ducts. Watery eyes can even occur in elderly patients due to loss of fat around the eyelids leading to excessive loose skin around the eyelids. This can result in tears dribbling down the corners of the eyes.

Do something Scientists are starting to think that regular aerobic exercise may be the single most important thing you can do for the long-term health of your brain. For mental fitness, aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every other day, reports Live Science.
Chill out Stress takes a toll on the brain by washing harmful chemicals over the hippocampus and other brain areas involved in memory. Some scientists suspect that living a balanced lifestyle and pursuing relaxing activities such as yoga, socializing and crafting may delay memory impairment by reducing stress.

Eat, eat, eat A low glycemic diet-high fiber, with moderate amounts of fat and protein-is broken down more slowly in the body than high glycemic foods, such as sweets and white starches. A steady pace of digestion in the gut gives a more reliable flow of energy to the brain, likely optimizing the organ’s long-term health and performance. Watch that diet While overindulging can make the brain sluggish and lead to long-term detriments to your brain, too few calories can also impair brain function. Many studies have linked dieting with distraction, confusion and memory impairment. Take care of your body Largely preventable diseases - such as Type II diabetes, obesity and hypertension - all affect your brain, too. Systemwide health concerns have been linked to an increased risk of cognitive decline and memory impairments.

longitudinal studies, two to four perk-me-ups a day may stave off normal cognitive decline and decrease the incidence of Alzheimer’s by 30 to 60 per cent.
Skip the supplements Supplements have been getting a bad rap recently, with even the familiar multivitamin now looking like a waste of money - or worse. Despite their ‘natural’ origins, they are not free of potential side effects, such as high blood pressure, digestion trouble, fertility problems and depression. Tease your brain Whether crossword puzzles, sudokus and other brain teasers actually keep your brain in shape, has not been wellestablished. However, lack of education is a strong predictor of cognitive decline. The more you’ve tried to learn, the better you’ll be at mental sit-ups in old age.

CONSTIPATION IN YOUNG CHILDREN >>
C
Raj Kothuru
onstipation is when a person has difficulty passing a bowel motion (stool) causing pain and discomfort. Childhood constipation is when a child has a hard stool (faeces or bowel movement) or faces difficulty when going to the toilet. Constipation is a common problem in children, particularly around the time of toilet training or after a painful or frightening bowel movement.
SYMPTOMS OF CONSTIPATION IN CHILDREN: • The child says it hurts when going to the toilet. • The child might show signs of holding on, like crossing legs, running around, crying or refusing to sit on the toilet etc • The child might complain of tummy pain • The child sometimes might soil their pants (mostly in ongoing constipation)
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE: Parents should understand that there may be a lot of difference in the firmness and frequency of bowel movements in normal children and constipation has nothing to do with how often the child goes to toilet. Parents, in most cases, only need to worry about the above only if they seem to be causing problems to the child. Some children may use their bowels only one to two times a week, while others do so every day. If this is a child’s normal pattern, and it does not have any pain when going to the toilet and the stool is not hard, there is no reason to be concerned.
Other symptoms may be: • Less hunger • Stomach cramps (on and off) • Irritable behaviour • Anal fissures causing pain and bleeding at the anus when passing stool (caused due to straining) CAUSES OF CHILDHOOD CONSTIPATION: Reasons / causes may not be clear all the time but may include: • Too much milk intake and not enough solids (causes lack of fiber) results in constipation. • Anal fissure causing the child to hold back from
• • • •
• • •
going to toilet due to fear of pain, bleeding etc (found especially in infants). Ignore the urge to go to the toilet because the child is too busy playing. Holding back during toilet training due to fear. Family history. Reluctance to use some toilet facilities on a prolonged basis (school etc) due to various reasons. Reduced water intake, too much processed food, excess cow’s milk etc. Natural tendency of having slow gut movement which causes constipation. Diseases (rare) such as certain metabolic disorders, absence of nerve endings in bowel, spinal defects etc.
LIFE STYLE CHANGES: A healthy diet, enough water, playful exercise, correct toilet training and regular toilet habits are important to prevent and help treat constipation in children. It is important for constipated children to develop the habit of sitting on the toilet regularly. ‘Toilet’ time should be set aside to allow for regular, undisturbed visits to
the toilet. (Approximately 5 minutes after meals,or first thing morning & then in the evening, the child should sit on the toilet for around 5 minutes, even if there is no urge to go). Parental support and encouragement is vital to alleviate any fears or painful associations the child might have. Children should be given fibre rich fruit each day with peel left on (apple, plum, prune, peach etc) and healthy vegetables, wholemeal cereals etc. Gently applying warmed castor oil around the belly in clockwise direction is helpful. CONSTIPATION IN INFANTS: An infant may be constipated if it has gone three to four days without a stool. Parents can easily know this because the infant often becomes uncomfortable and needs help stooling. The bottle milk formula may need to be changed, however I insist that the best is mother’s milk. A breastfed baby will very rarely get constipation because breast milk is more easily digested. The parent can very gently do a little bicycling movement and knee to chest position for the baby to relax the rectum. And don’t forget the highly effective Homeopathic
remedies. HOMEOPATHIC HELP: Many parents and also physicians trained in holistic medicine today are relying on Homeopathic remedies to treat constipation in babies because they are safe, effective and have no harmful side effects. They are also very easy to administer to the child due to the sweet taste. Homeopathy also works best for cases with a family history of constipation. Very specific remedies exist. Some examples are: Calcarea carbonica for children who experience painless constipation, Lycopodium when the child is gassy as well, Nux vomica, when there is cramping and when the child cries out in anger and many others. (However pls note that self medication is highly unadvisable for any ailment). Yogasanas such as Pavanamukta asana, Surya namaskara will be a fun way to introduce children to the benefits of yoga and also help greatly to relieve constipation in children. You may ask your personal query to Raj Kothuru (Homeopath) via email drraj@aurahealth.com.au or phone 0425 761 826 / (03) 9077 5044 regarding any of your health problems. lugging water during meals severely hampers your stomach’s digestive powers and causes insulin levels to fluctuate significantly, warns Microboitic counsellor Shonali Sabherwal. To know if you’re drinking enough water, it is often said, just check if you are feeling thirsty. If you aren’t, your fluid intake is likely to be just about right. But downing glasses of water along with your meals may not be the best time to quench your thirst. Macrobiotic counsellor Shonali Sabherwal explains why you should not drink water during your meal. “Most Indians have water along with their meals. The usual theory is washing down the food while eating. People have no idea how wrong this practice is and how difficult this can be for their digestion. For those suffering with digestion problems, the ramifications are manifold. Our stomachs have a knack of knowing when you will eat and starts releasing digestive juices immediately. If you start drinking water at the same time, what you are actually doing is diluting the digestive juices being released to digest your food, thereby hindering them from breaking down food.” Research shows that sipping a little water during meals isn’t a cause for concern but drinking a glass or two may interfere with digestion. It is best to drink fluids before and two hours after meals as this helps in absorption of nutrients, researchers have found. Elaborating on what exactly happens inside you when you glug water during meals, Sabherwal says that it gets absorbed by the intestinal walls of the stomach. “This absorption continues till it becomes concentrated enough for the digestive juices to begin digesting your food. However, due to it getting mixed with water, this concen-
trated substance is now thicker than the food contents present in your stomach. So less gastric juice will be secreted to digest your food. The result is, undigested food leaks into your system as it gets absorbed through the stomach walls. This will also lead to acid reflux and heart burn.” Drinking water with meals can also cause a surge in your insulin levels, almost like the way high glycemic food would affect you, Sabherwal cautions. “The more insulin is released in to your blood stream, the higher the chances of you storing fat in your body.” To avoid watering down your meals, Sabherwal suggests a few don’ts. “Make sure your food is not too salty as that would aggravate your thirst and trigger your need to down more water. Besides, eating in a hurry will cause you to gulp your food down. Most likely, you would feel the need to wash it down with water while you are at it. Instead, chew, chew and then chew some more. We secrete a lot of digestive juices (enzymes) while chewing, which makes our stomach’s job easier.”
