manufacturer, will the refrigerator open its door to the owner? Because the weighing machine kept in the washroom is also connected with internet and is collecting data about its owner,” said Vinton G Cerf, vicepresident and chief internet evangelist at internet giant Google. Cerf, who met communications minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday, high-
lighted the potential of Google’s ‘project loon to achieve the government’s target of making broadband available for the masses. ‘Project loon’ involves stationing hundreds of balloons at altitudes of 60,000 feet equipped with powerful wi-fi. “It can be used in parts where the government finds it difficult to roll out traditional modes of communication network,” Cerf said at an interactive session,
‘Innovation, Jobs and the Internet.’ The government and educators in India need to anticipate new opportunities that the internet and Google’s android mobile operating system can offer to achieve the target of Digital India, he said. Cerf felt that the government should keep the definition of broadband speed flexible rather than pre-define it.

Opportunities await you in India: Modi to diaspora
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi described on Thursday the millions of people of Indian origin across the world as “capital” for the country and appealed to the diaspora to turn to their forefathers’ homeland where opportunities await them now. “Welcoming you, I promise you that while our ancestors went (abroad) looking for opportunities, today opportunities await you here,” he said, inaugurating the 13th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas which marked the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa. Modi drew on his popularity with overseas Indians, who greeted him with a rockstar welcome during his visits to the US and Australia last year, to encourage the world’s second largest diaspora to contribute in whatever way possible to the land of their ancestors. “I have met more than 50 world leaders so far and almost all of them want to work with India,” said the PM, calling himself a Pravasi Gujarati. “Everything is not measured in dollars or pounds. The relationship we have with Pravasis is beyond that. It’s a bond,” he said, asking the gathering to join his government’s flagship programme to clean the Ganga. “There is one
more issue that I am sure you are concerned about and that is the rejuvenation of Ma Ganga.” “We have merged the PIO and OCI (overseas citizens of India) schemes and eased visa rules. Now, a person of Indian origin (PIO) can get lifelong visa in the country,” Modi said, recalling a promise he made at Madison
Square Garden in New York last September. He praised the diaspora for keeping Indian values alive even on foreign shores. “When someone abroad finds out that an Indian will be his neighbour, he’s happy. He thinks children will inculcate family values.” He said 173 countries, including
more than 40 Islamic nations, have supported his proposal at the UN General Assembly to adopt June 21 as International Yoga Day, underscoring his point that the world is looking at India with high hopes. Foreign and overseas Indian affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, in her welcome address, called
the diaspora a “great asset for the country” — a phrase Modi later reprised in his speech. Guyanese president Donald Ramotar, the chief guest of the event, lauded India for “protecting the interests of developing countries”. He backed India’s push for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council.

The city of activism and hope
elhi has grown exponentially in the last couple of decades as a result of universal factors like migration, industrialisation, urbanisation. Delhi has always been a city of migrants. In the wake of Independence, it witnessed the influx of massive numbers of refugees who came from the newly born state of Pakistan. Post Independence, the city was built largely by these refugees, who came mostly from Punjab, imbuing it with an initial identity that was Punjabi. Then Delhi became the capital of the new government of India. As the seat of political power, the city attracted a large number of government employees from all parts of the country. It also became home to politicians from different states. Thus, the city became a political and government bastion. In the last two decades, the processes of globalisation, industrialisation and urbanisation have added waves of migration to the city. Many of these people were economic migrants who came to the capital in search of opportunity and employment. They came mostly from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal (though it is alleged that it was actually Bangladesh). Thus, in the late 1990s, the city’s character began to change from a Punjabi-dominated city to a city dominated by the Purabiyas, people from eastern UP and Bihar. These various identities continue to influence public life in Delhi. Six decades after Independence, the city is the political nerve-centre of
the country. Thousands of aspiring and established politicians throng the city, lending it an extremely political colour. Of late, politics has become a subject of derision thanks to a sustained smear campaign. Of course, there are good politicians and bad — but this is also true of every other profession. What is notable is that, in the last few years, the political identity of the city has also undergone a major transformation. Many young people have entered the political arena. The city’s seven Lok Sabha MPs are all young by the standards of Indian politics. In city politics, too, the dominant role is being essayed by young leaders. Delhi today has emerged as a city of activism and hope, with an omnipresent youthful energy. A new socially and politically conscious generation is changing the contours of public life in the city. True, Delhi is notorious today for the high incidence of violence against women, and is labelled the “rape capital”. The crime rate in general is also high. But the city has also witnessed huge public mobilisations against corruption and crimes against women. Young Delhi knows how to demand accountability. This is not a rowdy youth. Instead, it is aspirational, creative and, most importantly, socially conscious. There was a time when people thought that urbanisation was bad. Now though, cities have become the lifeline for creative and aspirational young men and women, educated or not. The city is not just about politics, though. It has an underbelly that

is anything but political. Mahatma Gandhi used to say that India lives in villages. What he meant was that the culture, traditions and ethos of our land are better preserved and protected in villages, which is largely true. Equally true is that the migrants who come to Delhi or any other city bring with them their cultures and traditions, too. That is why Delhi is in celebration mode all through the year. From the Tamil Pongal to the Malayali Onam and the Ganesh Chaturthi of the Marathis, from the Gujarati Garba to Holi and Durga Puja — when is there no celebration in Delhi? Young men and women drive life in the city today. There is no cause for concern over
their youthful activities, the clothes they wear or the places they visit. We must have faith in them and guide them, because they are no less idealistic than any previous generation of young people. We may find them at a bar or a coffee bar; watch them closely and they’ll likely be talking about a Narendra Modi or an Anna Hazare, discussing corruption and cursing social evils. They have dreams in their eyes and ideas on their minds. Where we have failed is in giving them direction. We have to create excellent educational institutions in Delhi and improve the standards of our schools and colleges. We have to encourage sports in a big way. We have to create a conducive
atmosphere for non-governmental activism. We have to allow youngsters to take over public life in the city. Perhaps we could hand over to them public spaces like parks and playgrounds and ask them to manage them? Swami Vivekananda returned to India in 1897 after a four-year sojourn in the West. He reached Colombo and then travelled across the length and breadth of the country for over a year, ending his journey in Almora. He addressed hundreds of meetings during his year-long travel. He began his address at almost all of them by invoking youthful energy: “Oh, my dear young men and women of Madras! All my hopes lie on you,” he would say.

Eiffel Tower goes dark in tribute to Charlie Hebdo attack victims

the 324-metre (1,063-foot) tall monument at night were briefly turned off at 8:00pm (1900 GMT) before gradually coming back on. The symbolic gesture came as thousands of people gathered on
the other side of the city in Republique square to hold a second night of vigils in memory of the victims of the worst attack on French soil in decades. ”Our city has been a refuge for writers, philosophers, journalists
who were threatened for their ideas,” Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo told Liberation newspaper. “There is no place in Paris for extremist ideas of any sort.” The Eiffel Tower is one of France’s top tourist attractions and the pre-eminent monument in the City of Light. Earlier in the day, office workers stood shoulder to shoulder, buses and metro trains halted, and the toll of bells and the sound of weeping broke the silence in honour of the victims. “Charlie will be free!” cried a woman joining a crowd in front of Paris’ Notre Dame cathedral a moment before noon (local time) when the country observed a national minute of silence. Among the hundreds gathered on the ancient square, many were in tears or stood with their eyes closed, while some prayed and a long line formed to enter the cathedral for a special memorial mass. “When you attack the press, you attack liberty,” said Jean-Paul Doussin, an elderly man who removed his beret to show his respect, despite heavy rain. “You have to fight for freedom of expression.” There was also tension, with large numbers of riot police moving through Paris in vans and camouflaged soldiers with automatic rifles on guard outside some government
buildings. But the main feeling in the capital was one of sadness. At the major rail station of SaintLazare, staff called on travellers and workers to pause at midday. “We must stick together and save our freedom of speech,” said Julie, 37, who works for the national SNCF rail company. The government has called for another round of even bigger demonstrations of nationwide solidarity on Sunday. Ten people at Charlie Hebdo -- including the chief editor and renowned cartoonists -- were gunned down on Wednesday by two men. Two policemen were also shot, one of them shot in the head at close range as he lay wounded on the sidewalk. Shocked politicians led by President Francois Hollande were seen on television taking part in the minute’s silence. Islamic organisations from across France quickly sought to distance themselves from the jihadists and called on Muslims to join today’s moment of silence and for imams to condemn terrorism at Friday prayers. Twenty imams went a step further by appearing together outside the offices of Charlie Hebdo, along with hundreds of other people coming to express sympathy with the victims and to leave flowers.

He managed to accomplish this score just off 123 balls in the match played at Vishakhapatnam on the 5th of April 2005. Later the same year, he scored 183 not out against Sri Lanka in the Bi-lateral One Day International (ODI) Series, outclassing his own record. This match was played at Jaipur and India had to outsmart a huge 299 runs score set by the Sri Lankans. Dhoni got India this great victory with his wonderful 183 runs within just 145 balls. This score set a yet another record for being the highest score made in the second innings of a One Day International (ODI) Cricket match, and still lies unbeaten by any other batsman. At the end of the Series, Dhoni finished with highest total score of 346 runs and grabbed the coveted Man of the Series award. He scored good number of runs in a consistent manner for a period of time, and soon grabbed the No. 1 position in the One Day International (ODI) Cricket rankings issued by International Cricket Council (ICC) in the year 200506.

Latest Achievements Under the able Captainship of Dhoni, the Indian One Day International (ODI) Cricket team continued to maintain its record of victory. First of all, the team defeated Australia consecutively in 2 final matches of the Commonwealth Bank Series played in March 2008. The series was played between India, Australia and Sri Lanka. In the first final, Australia scored 239 at the loss of 8 wickets in 50 overs. India bounced back with 242 runs in just 45.5 overs at the loss of 4 wickets. Although, Dhoni tried to maintain his record a bit by half century against West Indies. This was a low phase both for the Indian Cricket team and Dhoni, as the wicketkeeper batsman could just score 139 runs in the 4 matches during the One Day International (ODI) Cricket Series against South Africa, and the Indian team lost the Series to South Africa by 0-4. Again, in the 2007 Cricket World Cup, India badly lost to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and was ousted from the tournament. In both the matches, Dhoni lost at duck (0 runs), and scored a total of 29 runs in the whole tournament.

n a massive breakthrough, scientists have created the first new antibiotic in more than three decades, Teixobactin, that can treat many common bacterial infections such as tuberculosis, septicemia and C Diff or clostridium difficile colitis. The discovery comes at a time when World Health Organization has sent out warnings that humanity is staring at a post-antibiotic era when common infections will no longer have a cure. The first antibiotic, Penicillin, was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928, and more than 100 compounds have been found since then, but no new class has been found since 1987. Antibiotics have been magic bullets for human health for decades but irrational use has made most bugs resistant to these. Northeastern University’s professor Kim Lewis announced Thursday the discovery of the antibiotic that eliminates pathogens without encountering any detectable resistance. Lewis and Northeastern biology professor Slava Epstein co authored the finding with colleagues from the University of Bonn in Germany, Novo Biotic Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Selcia Ltd in the United Kingdom. Most antibiotics target bacterial proteins, but bugs can become resistant by evolving new kinds
of proteins. What’s unique about Teixobactin is that it launches a double attack on the building blocks of bacterial cell walls. Experts say this will pave the way for a new generation of antibiotics because of the way it was discovered. Teixobactin could be available in the next five years. Its testing on mice has shown it clears infections without side-effects. The NU team led by Prof Lewis is now concentrating on upscaling production of Teixobactin to test it on humans. Northeastern researchers’ pioneering work to develop a novel method for growing uncultured bacteria led to the discovery of the antibiotic, and Lewis’s lab played a key role in analyzing and testing the compound for resistance from pathogens. Lewis said this marks the first discovery of an antibiotic to which resistance by mutations of pathogens have not been identified. “So far, the strategy has been based on developing new antibiotics faster than the pathogens acquire resistance. Teixobactin presents a new opportunity to develop compounds that are essentially free of resistance,” Lewis said. The screening of soil micro-organisms has produced most antibiotics, but only one per cent of these will grow in the lab, Lewis explained. He and Epstein spent

years seeking to address this problem by tapping into a new source of antibiotics beyond those created by synthetic means: uncultured bacteria, which make up 99% of all species in external environments. They developed a novel method for growing uncultured bacteria in their natural environment. Their approach involves the iChip, a miniature device Epstein’s team created that can isolate and help grow single cells in their natural environment and provide researchers with much improved
access to uncultured bacteria. “Novo Biotic has assembled about 50,000 strains of uncultured bacteria and discovered 25 new antibiotics, of which Teixobactin is the latest and most interesting,” Lewis said. “Our impression is that nature produced a compound that evolved to be free of resistance,” Lewis said. “This challenges the dogma that we’ve operated under that bacteria will always develop resistance. Well, maybe not in this case.” Britain’s chief medical officer,
Dame Sally Davies, recently said antibiotic resistant was “as big a risk as terrorism”, and warned that Britain faced returning to 19th century scourges when the smallest infection or operations could kill. WHO said a comprehensive study of antibiotic development, covering innovative, small firms, as well as pharmaceutical giants found that only 15 out of 167 antibiotics under development had a new mechanism of action with the potential to meet the challenge of multidrug resistance.

n a historic verdict, the Punjab and Haryana high court has allowed jail inmates to have sex with their partners as long as they are married and want to have a child. The court, in an order made public, held that the right of convicts and jail inmates to have conjugal visits or artificial insemination for progeny was a fundamental right. Justice Surya Kant of the high court has passed these orders while disposing of a petition filed by a couple - Jasvir Singh and Sonia - who are currently lodged in the Central Jail, Patiala. They were awarded the death penalty by a trial court for kidnapping and killing a 16-year-old boy of a rich Hoshiarpur family for a hefty ransom. The duo had sought permission to stay together and resume their conjugal life for the sake of progeny. They wanted the court to order the jail authorities to make the necessary arrangements in this regard. Jasvir had pleaded that he is the only son of his parents and that they had been arrested in the case within eight months of their marriage. The petitioners claim that their demand is not for personal sexual gratification. The court however denied Jasvir’s plea considering the heinous nature of the crime committed, but enlarged the scope of the petition in larger public interest. The judge held that right to life and personal

liberty under Article 21 of the Constitution includes the right of convicts and jail inmates to have conjugal visits or artificial insemination as an alternative. ”A society which is currently involved in academic and intellectual debates on ‘gayrights’ or the recognition of ‘thirdgender’, cannot shy away nor can it keep concealed under the carpet the pragmatic concept of conjugal visits of the jail inmates,” the court observed. “To say it differently, time has come and before it is too late, the stake-holders must sit together and deliberate upon this crucial subject and take a holistic view.” The court, however, held that these rights were to be regulated by law and were the sole prerogative of the state. For this, the court ordered the constitution of a jail reforms committee to be headed by a retired high court judge. The committee would formulate a scheme for creation of an environment for conjugal and family visits in jail. It will identify categories of inmates entitled to such visits. Other members shall include a social scientist and experts in jail reforms and prison management. The reforms committee will also determine is couples, where both the husband and wife have been jailed should, as a matter of policy, be included in such a list. The decision would be taken keeping in view the risk to security, adverse social impact

‘Outstanding’ secret behind MOM’s success
H
ere’s a secret behind the success of India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) that only two people — and not even the Prime Minister — knew. During every critical manoeuvre of the spacecraft, mission director S Arunan would slip out of the control room and stand in silence. The only other person who knew this routine was then
Isro chairman K Radhakrishnan. “Call it superstition, but I believe that it brought us luck,” Arunan said. His absence hardly mattered, for he had already ensured that the spacecraft was pre-fed commands for the manoeuvres. “The telemetry commands to the spacecraft are given several hours before it executes them,
and at the real time of MOM carrying out the manoeuvres we are just sitting and watching,” he said. “And I didn’t want to watch.” This he diligently followed during the six orbit-raising manoeuvres and three trajectory corrections of MOM. Arunan faced the biggest challenge when PM Narendra Modi visited the mission control room in Bengaluru
to witness the spacecraft’s injection into the Mars orbit. The PM’s security had insisted there would be no movement of people at the centre before Modi arrived and till he left. Arunan told the chairman that he couldn’t break the ritual, and on a special request, he was allowed to remain outside the mission control. But the real
cracker came from one of the PM’s commandoes who asked why the project director was standing outside. Arunan told him he wanted some fresh air. The commando smirked, and said, “Sir, I’ve seen many such people; I move with politicians.” Indian scientists are often frowned at for their personal beliefs—which often don’t interfere with scientific excellence—but not many know space scientists in the US and Russia have their share of quirks as well. The Americans munch on peanuts during rocket launches. And the Russian cosmonauts pee on the right rear wheel of their transfer bus. The US peanut tradition has its origin in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s failure with the Ranger missions in the 1960s. After six failures, when a launch was successful, someone in the mission control said it was because a scientist was having peanuts. The Russians also place coins on the rail track as the train that carries the rocket booster approaches the cosmodrome, for lucky charms. It’s principle versus paisa in Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene
W
hat if a middle-class man with simple dreams suddenly finds a few extra zeroes added to his bank account? Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene tells the tale of Prithvi Khurana, played by Zayed Khan, whose mundane life turns topsy-turvy when he discovers a pile of unaccounted money in his account.
A righteous guy, Prithvi finds himself in a dilemma - should he follow his principles? Or should he give in to temptation and enjoy the finer things of life? Says Zayed, “Prithvi Khurana seems to bring out the best in me. Of all the roles I have done so far, this is the closest to my heart. I am excited to see how the audience responds to my character.”
Presented by Trinity Group and directed by Gurmmeet Singh, the comedy thriller also features Rannvijay Singh and Tina Desai. While the chemistry between Zayed and Tina is the highlight of the film, Rannvijay, who plays Prithvi’s roommate and friend, provides comic relief with his antics. The actor says, “I loved my character as soon as
I heard the script. Sam is everything that Prithvi is not - madcap and capricious. My character adds to the humour of the movie.” The fast-paced track Selfiyaan has become popular too. Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene, produced by Devinder Jain and Akhilesh Jain, releases January 16.

Taxi drivers earn 10 million Australian dollars daily due to unfaithful spouses
Cheating spouses and wives spend millions on taxis to whisk them away on adulterous adventures
T
he results of a new study conducted among 11,000 members of Victoria Milan
– the dating site for married and attached people looking to cheat – indicate that a significant num-
ber of cheaters use taxis to go on dates with their lovers. In fact, according to Victoria Milan’s calcu-
lations, cheaters spend, on average, 157.25 Australian dollars per month on taxis to transport them to their unfaithful unions. The majority of cheaters (40%) surveyed said taxis are their preferred mode of transport when conducting an affair. The Underground is used by 32% of cheaters, 16% take a public bus and 12% ride a tram. Most participants using taxis (62%) say they spend an average of $45 each trip to meet with their lovers, 13% spend less than $30 and 25% clock up around $45 – $90 on the meter. Founder and CEO of Victoria Milan, Sigurd Vedal said having an affair is a money-can’t-buy experience worth investing in. “It’s likely 40% of our members use taxis only when meeting with their illicit lovers, however it is money worth spending. Using your personal vehicle exposes you to recognition or identification – taxis are safe and anonymous, just like Victoria Milan. Spending $45 on a taxi to meet with your lover is money well spent!,” Mr Vedal said. Survey results & calculations 11.256 male and female mem-
bers of Victoria Milan polled a)Which public transportation do you use for your adulterous adventures? Public Bus 16% Tram 12% Undergrou 32% Taxi 40% b)If you use the taxi, how much money do you use to get to a date with your lover? Less than $30 13% An average of $45 62% More than $45 25% c)What’s the average number of dates you have with your lover? 1-2 per month 49% 3-5 per month 36% 5-10 per month 15% Calculation The taxi spending calculation is based on the survey results extrapolated to the number of Victoria Milan global members (5 million members) multiplied by the amount of dates cheaters have monthly (average of 3.3 dates), and how much on average they spend on taxis every time they go on a date (average of a$47.6). What it represents is a monthly revenue of 314,360,793 Australian Dollars globally for the taxi industry.

When Uber victim came face to face India towards Neutrino club with the ‘monster’ who raped her
“
This is the monster who raped me,” shouted the shocked woman executive as she suddenly came face to face with the Uber cab driver who allegedly raped her. The two ran into each other moments after the 25-year-old had shared with the court the details of the sexual assault, the Delhi Police told the sessions court. Shiv Kumar Yadav had refused to undergo an identification parade but the woman recognised him immediately and in front of a crowd, said the chargesheet the police filed on December 24. The financial analyst was raped

early December 5 when she was returning to her east Delhi home from Vasant Kunj in a cab she had called through Uber, the US-based online taxi-booking service. Yadav was arrested two days later from Mathura in UP. As he was being brought to the court the next day, the 32-year-old ran into the woman. The “identification” is, however, not legally admissible in court. Speaking to the media earlier, the victim said woman should not “be quiet” but should “speak up” against sexual abuse. On Wednesday, Yadav was produced before additional
sessions judge Kaweri Baweja, who will on January 9 hear the case that not only triggered widespread outrage but also a ban on web-based taxi service providers, including Uber. Yadav’s DNA was found on the backseat of the car, the woman’s clothes and on her person, the police said. He had a history of criminal behaviour. Between 2001 and 2013, eight FIRs were registered against him for assault, theft, and rape. Yadav has been accused of rape, kidnap and assault in the December 5 case.

ndia now on a threshold to join the global high-end scientific Neutrino club and its way has been cleared with the Union Cabinet clearing the Neutrino Observatory, INO last month. According to Prof Naba K Mondal, Project Director of the India-based Neutrino Observatory and Inter Institutional Centre for High Energy Physics it would open up avenues for experiments in high energy physics. It may be noted that the Cabinet Committee on Security had cleared the project on December 26 last year, at an investment of Rs 1,500 crores. It will be funded
jointly by Department of Science and Technology and Atomic Energy, while the Infrastructure will be created with the help of Tamil Nadu government. Prof Mondal, said on the sidelines of the ongoing Indian Science Congress in Mumbai. He said, India will also seek international participation in the project, so that it turns out to be an international hub for highend research like the CERN in Geneva. He however, said, Indian participation in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project will continue.

O
ne of the coming Fridays —the date hasn’t been decided yet —2,000 theatres across the world will get ready for a blockbuster release of a feature film made on the life and times of Sachin Tendulkar. Featuring the master blaster himself, the yet-to-be-titled movie will capture his cricket and personal life in great detail. Apart from acting in real-time, Tendulkar will also chip in with his inputs for the film. The film-maker—Mumbai-based production company 200 Not Out, which has over 150 advertisement and short films to its credit— bagged the rights to make the film from World Sports Group (WSG). It has roped in James Erskine, a London-based award-winning writer, director and producer, to direct the film. WSG manages Tendulkar’s brand and commercial interests across the world. The work on the movie started a year ago and is presently being shot in real-time. Many personalities across the world are also contributing to it. 200 Not Out, it is learned, is also in touch with cricket boards across the world to access video footage from the past which will be weaved into the movie. Erskine directed ‘One Night in Turin’, which was released nationwide in the run-up to the football World Cup in 2010. He
has also directed the film ‘Battle of the Sexes’ which captures the story of the most watched tennis match ever, between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. His latest work released earlier in 2014, is ‘Pantani: The Accidental Death of a Cyclist’, a film on Marco Pantani, one of the most flamboyant and popular cyclists of the 1990s. He has also directed a cricket film, ‘From the Ashes’. Ravi Bhagchandka, the founder of 200 Not Out, said, “We decided to work with Erskine after studying his many incredible films involving sports personalities. This will be the first time that he will be working in this part of the world. We will work with the best in the business for the film to be a fitting tribute to the unparalleled achievements of Sachin Tendulkar. Apart from following the phenomenal rise of Tendulkar, the film will also reveal a few aspects of his life which have never been heard of or seen before. The superbat’s life as a young boy living in the suburbs of Mumbai, his early days of school and cricket, his life outside the game, marriage to Anjali and his following worldwide will all be a part of the movie apart from the game he played for more than 25 years. Bhagchandka, a former club cricketer from Mumbai, says after playing the game himself, he

was like, says Bhagchandka. A leading sports broadcasting company is learned to have picked the marketing rights for the movie. “It will be a worldwide release in more than 2000 theatres, Bhagchandka said.
Flag Hoisting Ceremony on Republic Day
The makers of the movie did not want to make a documentary or a biopic on the cricketer’s life, it is learned, and opted for a feature film after the former cricketer himself gave the go-ahead to the project and agreed to be part of it.

Rape? No, it’s hypermasculinity, for some men
S
ome men who do not have feelings of hostility toward women can still engage in sexual assaults on the campus, researchers report, adding that they consider their behaviour as an achievement rather than rape. “Sexual assault on college campuses is the pink elephant in the room. It is a crime that is under reported and misunderstood,” said Mary Ellen O’Toole, forensic behavioral consultant and editor-in-chief of the journal Violence and Gender that published the study. The shocking statistic that about one in five women will be the victim of sexual assault while in college is made even more so by the fact that most of those women will know their assailants, the authors noted. During the study, Sara Edwards and Kathryn Bradshaw from University of North Dakota and Grand Forks and Verlin Hinsz from North Dakota State University, Fargo, separated male participants into three groups
based on how they scored on measurements of hypermasculinity, hostility toward women and callous sexual attitudes. The authors reported associations between these groupings and whether the men denied any intention to rape or use force to obtain intercourse, self-reported intentions to rape, or indicated a distinction between sexually coercive behaviour and rape and expressed intentions to use of force to obtain intercourse but denied rape. “These authors describe the numbers as staggering and we know it is one of the most concerning crimes in the country today,” O’Toole added. The implications for these findings are extremely significant for education programmes about sexual aggression and rape prevention and the development of a more accurate identification of subtypes of offenders based on their motivation, cognition and personality traits, the authors concluded.

Y
oga originated in India but this spiritual and mental discipline has failed to resonate with the country’s masses, who mostly seek its virtues of physical fitness. But filmmaker and art historian Benoy K. Behl feels the Indian government’s emphasis on yoga and the UN celebrating World Yoga Day June 21 have set the pace for a long innings. “Actually, it is we Indians who have lost sight of our own heritage and it is the world that is recognising these things (yoga). It is fortunate that the Indian government has recognised the importance of yoga and this will take it a long way,” Behl said. “There is every reason for us to stand up and take ownership and also see it reaches more and more people,” he added. An expert in Indian art and sculpture, Delhi-based Behl screened his documentary “Yoga: An Ancient Vision of Life” that explored and presented the true meaning of yoga at the India International Centre Wednesday. The 60minute documentary, shot across India, Germany and the United States, also features interviews with leading practitioners and scholars of yoga, including yoga guru B.K.S Iyengar, who died last year, and prominent doctors, scientists and sociologists. Even though Behl’s career highlights, spanning over three decades, point to his close association with ancient Indian

art and culture, including his love affair with the Ajanta Caves, on which he has penned the wellknown book “The Ajanta Caves: Ancient Paintings of Buddhist India” – the documentary comes as a surprise. “It is a natural outcome. The art of India and yoga are completely based in the Indian philosophical way of life. In fact, all faiths and spiritual traditions of India emanate from what we call yoga,” the 58-year-old Behl said. “To me, personally, yoga is the thin edge of the wedge which is about the Indian vision of life and understanding. The whole world, the so-called modern world, is taking a lot of interest in it because of the physical side, but yoga is not limited to physical exercise and the ‘asanas’ are only a tiny fraction of it,” he added. And with this vision of engaging people in the spiritual aspect of yoga and making them aware of the connection of mind, body and soul, Behl approached the documentary to go beyond the ephemeral passing of reality surrounding us. “It will take the audiences into something deeper. I have hoped to achieve the vision that would help us look within and inwards instead of just chasing petty pleasures that keep us busy,” Behl said. Behl started working on this project 15 months ago and shot around 100 hours – most of them alone during foreign shoots. Nevertheless the experience has been fulfilling and satisfactory, especially as the subject resonates

with his personal philosophy of “enjoying the simple pleasures of life”. “What is the hurry, I have been asking people when they get so stressed about things that are a creation of so-called modern
vision that urges you to go out and try to desperately earn money and desperately spend it on what corporations are creating and marketing,” he said. “It is important to have a healthy and positive attitude towards
life. If you (the government) start teaching yoga in primary schools, children will get acquainted with it and imbibe it with an open mind. They would be able to inculcate this habit and it will be their way of life forever,” he added. -

Italian marine Latorre seeks more time at home
E
ven after the Supreme Court had refused to grant more time to Italian marine Massimilano Latorre, accused in the killing of fishermen,
to remain in his country to undergo heart surgery, he decided to go under the knife and on Wednesday requested the court for extension of the period of stay in his home
country. Latorre’s counsel, senior advocate K T S Tulsi, told a bench of Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justice A K Sikri that his client
underwent heart surgery on January 5 and that he was not in a position to travel to India. The court, which had earlier firmly told the Italian marines not
to expect ‘special treatment’ as they should be treated alike under the law, agreed to hear Latorre’s plea on January 12. Latorre and other marine Salvatore Girone were accused of killing fishermen off Kerala Coast. In September last year, the court had permitted Latorre to go home for four months to recuperate from a brain stroke he suffered while in Delhi in judicial custody. He had on December 17 sought two more months to undergo heart surgery but the plea was rejected by the court which had said the marines must respect the legal system of India. It had also asked whether any other person accused of murder could have got such leniency to travel back home and stay there for long periods. “You (Latorre) went to Italy in September. Why didn’t you undergo surgery then? We are not advising you where to undergo the heart surgery. But there is a legal system here in India. You must respect the Indian legal system,” the bench had said. “Let us have the same yardstick for everyone. If the offence is under section 302 of Indian Penal Code, we term it heinous crime. Yet the investigation is not complete even after three years. It can never be allowed to happen. The system must work. We are sorry. We cannot entertain these applications,” it had said.

New artificial knee ligament graft in offing
knowing how long the deadly pathogen survives on surfaces, in water, or in liquid droplets is critical to developing effective disinfection practices to prevent the spread of the disease. Currently, the World Health Organisation guidelines recommend to hospitals and health clinics that liquid wastes from patients be flushed down the toilet or disposed of in a latrine, researchers said. However, Ebola research labs that use patients’ liquid waste are supposed to disinfect the waste before it enters the sewage system. Bibby’s team set out to deter-
mine what research can and can’t tell us about these practices. The researchers scoured scientific papers for data on how long the virus can live in the environment. They found a dearth of published studies on the matter. “That means no one knows for sure whether the virus can survive on a surface and cause infection or how long it remains active in water, wastewater, or sludge,” researchers said. The team concluded that Ebola’s persistence outside the body needs more careful investigation. The study was published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology Letters.

are working to engineer such a product by combining three components: polyester fibers that are braided to increase strength and toughness, an inherently antioxidant and porous bio-material previously created in Ameer’s lab, and calcium nano crystals, a mineral naturally found in human teeth and bones. During ACL reconstruction sur-
geries, tunnels are drilled into the femur and tibia bones to hold the new ligament in a fixed position. Ameer created a bone-like material by combining his antioxidant biomaterials with the calcium nanocrystals; he then embedded braided polyester fibres into it. The artificial ligament’s bone-like ends healed to the native bone in the drilled tunnels, anchoring the ligament into place. By studying an animal model, Ameer and his team noticed that the animal’s natural bone and tissue cells migrated into the pores of the artificial ligament, populating it throughout and integrating with the bone tunnels. While long-term studies are necessary to evaluate the potential use of the approach in humans, Ameer is optimistic about the results. “The engineered ligament is bio-compatible and can stabilize the knee, allowing the animal to function. Most importantly, we may have found a way to integrate an artificial ligament with native bone,” Ameer said. The research was published in the Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.

esearchers are developing a new synthetic knee ligament graft that can integrate with the native bone, promote growth of new ligament tissue and stabilize the knee. Connecting the femur to the tibia, the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture is one of the most devastating injuries in sports. Not only is the ACL inelastic and
prone to popping, it is incapable of healing itself, causing surgeons to rely on autografts for reconstruction. Most common is the bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) graft, in which the surgeon removes part of the patellar tendon to replace the damaged ACL. “BPTB autografts have a high incidence of knee pain and dis-

A new study at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston will test whether the technology of Google Glass, a hands-free, wearable computer device, can help foster the precious bond between a mother and her child. Hundreds of babies are separated from their mothers after birth each year because one or both of them need immediate care, The Boston Globe reported. Stephanie Shine, a nurse at the hospital, wants those mothers to see their newborns through the eyes of their partners: They will wear Google Glass while visiting the intensive care unit, and the

images they see will stream live to a tablet computer in the mom’s hands. “I want to take this super-hightech device and capture what could be thought of as one of the strongest and basic human connections there is,” said Shine. Researchers are seeking 250 mothers to place in one of three study groups: One group will use Google Glass, another will use iPads to video-chat, and the third, a control group, will not use technology. Shine believes the use of Glass and iPads could help reduce maternal stress. “For mothers who cannot touch and feel their babies right away, technology can help bridge the gap,” said Dr Terrie Inder, chairwoman of newborn medicine at the Brigham.

ishva Hindu Parishad’s (VHP) young women’s wing Durga Vahini has launched a campaign to “reconvert” Hindu women who married Muslim men, claiming the ghar wapsi campaign must address “love jihad”. The latest issue of Himalaya Dhwani, a magazine brought out by the Vahini’s northern India regional coordinator Rajni Thukral, is devoted to this theme. reads: “conversion of nationality through religious conversion”. But why a picture of Kareena, who married filmstar Saif Ali Khan in 2012? “She is a celebrity. The youth try to emulate celebrities. They think if she can do so, why not us?” Thukral claimed. “Sixteen Hindu women who married Muslim men posing as Hindus have approached us for ghar wapsi. We have already reconverted two. One has also been remarried,” Thukral said. In the magazine’s editorial section, she wrote: “There has been
much debate on love jihad and conversions. The nation was divided and Pakistan was created because of conversions. If a girl gets caught in Love Jihad and becomes Muslim by mistake and now wants to return to her original faith, isn’t it her right? It’s strange that some parties claiming to be secular call this conversion.” Claiming that “love jihad” was a “serious” issue in Himachal Pradesh, Thukral said Vahini, “will go to 3,000 villages” and have “apprised the state government of love jihad here on a large scale.” “We are also taking up the matter at the national level. We had a conclave in MP recently and will have one in Delhi early in March,” Thukral added. Reacting to the cover, Saif Ali Khan said. “It’s ridiculous and not surprising… but these uneducated and bigoted ideas are the worst of India and condemning them is important”. Women within the VHP loop stay in Durga Vahini from the age of 15 to 35 where they are taught military-style combat and a revisionist history that promotes Hindu supremacy. After Vahini, they join the VHP’s women’s wing Matr Shakti.

Pakistan restricts Dosti bus service up to Wagah
C
iting “terror threats”, Pakistan has restricted the movement of Dosti bus service between New Delhi and Lahore up to Wagah. Buses operating on Amritsar-LahoreNankana Sahib route have also been restricted and do not go be-
yond the border town. The new arrangement, it was learnt, has been in effect since January 2. The passengers travelling to Pakistan from India need to arrange for further journey to Lahore on their own. The Delhi-Lahore bus operates six
days a week with no service on Sunday. This is for second time that entry of the buses has been restricted by Pakistan. In 2009, when there was a terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, the movement of Indian
buses was restricted up to Wagah. This time, however, Pakistan has decided not to ply its own buses as well beyond Wagah. The country recently witnessed a terrorist attack on an Army school in Peshawar in which 145
people, including 132 children, were killed. Lt Col (retd) Khalid Sarfaraz, Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation manager for the Dosti bus service, in a letter on January 1 to authorities in Delhi cited security reasons for restricting the movement of buses up to Wagah only. Raj Pal Singh, terminal in-charge for the DelhiLahore bus at Dr Ambedkar Terminal (Delhi Gate), told The Indian Express over phone that the letter was received on January1 and the new arrangement came into effect on January 2. Sarfaraz also wrote to the roadways authorities in Amritsar, following which buses operating on Amritsar-Lahore-Nankana Sahib route have also been restricted. The buses on AmritsarLahore-Nankana Sahib route ply four times in a week. While Raj Pal Singh said on an average the occupancy of the Delhi-Lahore bus was more than 70 per cent, an official at Amritsar said the occupancy in the buses between Amritsar-LahoreNankana Sahib was below 50 per cent on routine days. The Delhi-Lahore bus service was officially launched in March 1999. The then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had travelled to Pakistan on the bus on its inaugural run in February 1999. The bus service connecting Amritsar with Lahore and Nankana Sahib was started in year 2006.
Forced castration: CBI files case against dera chief

C
entral Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Gurmeet Ram Rahim, head of Sirsa-based religious sect Dera Sacha Sauda, to probe allegations related to castration of around 400 of his followers at his monastery (‘dera’) after he falsely claimed that the act will ensure union with God. The agency is likely to question Rahim, who was named in the FIR as an accused, soon to seek his clarifications over the allegations and may later subject him to scientific tests including polygraph after seeking his consent, said a CBI source. The case was lodged on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court after one of the alleged 400 castrated followers, Hans Raj Chauhan alias Hakiki, had petitioned it, seeking CBI probe and compensations. Chauhan had been allegedly castrated in 2000 on a claim made by Rahim (the dera chief) that it would lead to attainment of union with God via the latter, said the source. The case was lodged against Rahim and others, who may have facilitated the castrations including doctors and medical personnel, on charges related to criminal conspiracy, voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means and punishment for criminal intimidation, said a CBI spokesper-
son. “The petitioner had alleged that around 400 male followers of Gurmeet Ram Rahim, including himself, were castrated in Sirsa in 2000 under the false claim of the religious leader that the castration would lead to realisation
of God via him,” said the source. The alleged victims belonged to states including Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Chauhan had approached the court in 2012. The court had said that the case of castration couldn’t be
termed as an act of ‘humanity’ even if the followers had given their consent for it. “Would you allow cutting the head if someone offers the same,” the court had said while hearing the petition. It was reported that the CBI
was soon going to file a case to probe the allegations and that it had sent a team each to Sirsa and Chandigadh to collect castration-related complaints and witness statements.

Akshay Kumar to return to MasterChef India
kshay Kumar is likely to return to the small screen with the fourth season of reality TV show MasterChef India season four. Kumar earlier appeared on Dare 2 Dance, a reality show based on stunts and dance. ”The programming team is trying to get Akshay on board the show as ‘maha-judge’. Nothing is finalised yet as talks are still on,” said a source. Culinary experts Sanjeev Kapoor, Vikas Khanna and Ranveer Brar will judge the show, which is aired on Star Plus and is expected to premier Januaryend. Akshay’s love for food is not a hidden secret. The
eople for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staff will make an appearance on Comedy Nights With Kapil to thank its host Kapil Sharma and his crew for their compassion towards animals. Kapil, a star stand up comedian, himself has an adopted dog named Zanjeer. Also, in 2013, when the sets of TV show Comedy Nights with Kapil had caught fire, the crew had rescued four stray puppies from there. A believer in encouraging people to adopt homeless dogs from shelters and streets, Kapil says it’s a cause close to his heart. “Always choose to adopt your companion cat or dog. Remember that there is already one on the street or at an animal shelter waiting for his or her chance for a better life,” he said in a statement. A group of 10 representatives of PETA went to the set of the Colors show to applaud Kapil’s compassion towards animals. Sachin Bangera, PETA India manager (media and celebrity projects), who spoke to Kapil during the episode to be aired Sunday, said: “When celebrities talk about issues, people tend to listen to them. Celebrities from the world of entertainment have a whole lot of impact on people and they give a boost to campaigns, and especially issues related to animals.”

udhir Sharma’s next show titled Hotel for Star Plus will not have one, but two male leads. So, sharing the spotlight with Teeshay as the male lead, will be 23-year-old Aashim Gulati. He’ll play Neel, the security head at the hotel. Aashim has featured in several commercials, including Chevrolet Beat 2014 and McDonalds. But what caught
our attention is the striking resemblance between him and Bollywood actor Aditya Roy Kapoor. He says, “We have just shot the pilot and hence, I don’t have much details.” Ask him about the resemblance, and he replies, “I keep getting that reaction. As much as I would like it, it annoys me as I want to be known as Aashim. It’s like a case of identity crisis for me.”

Facing Up to Alcoholism With New Interactive Photo T00l
W
hile drinking alcohol in moderation like red wine is considered beneficial for your health, it is very easy to cross that fine line between moderation and going overboard. What soberness conceals, drunkenness reveals in your health and appearance! Alcohol is a pervasive fact of life and dependency on alcohol is actually a complex disorder that affects every aspect of your life as well as your near and dear ones. Alcoholism or alcohol addiction is considered a disease because it fits the definition of a disease. It is progressive and chronic and if left
January 2015 Edition
untreated, it could potentially kill. Thus the ill effects of alcohol on health is widely known and publicized, so it is important to keep alcohol consumption under check. A new tool has now been designed by website Rehabs, which shows how excessive drinking can have negative influence on your appearance. This interactive tool is named as “Your face as an alcoholic” shows people the reality of how their face would look in future if they continued being a chronic alcoholic. It is as simple as uploading your current photograph; the new tool then can
chart the change in your features including your skin and face in the next 2, 5, 10, 15 and 20 years to enable you to see how alcohol can alter your face. Your picture is actually morphed, distorted and edited to show some of the longterm effects of alcohol on your skin such as bloating, permanent red blotches and deep wrinkles. A spokesperson from the organization commented that “The purpose of the program is to create a shock factor for users, preying on the vanity, in hopes that the very ugly future of their actions will incite behavioural change.” The main purpose is to show you just how bad, things can become in your near future if you continue being addicted to alcohol. This new tool serves as a vital resource for people battling substance abuse and behavioral addictions. They also have a similar tool which shows the dramatic impact of drugs like meth on your face. The website also added “The physical transformation that prolonged drug abuse can cause is just the tip of the iceberg, merely an immediate and dramatic representation of the life-altering destruction that addiction can create.” Alcohol not only depletes your body of the vital nutrients, but can also reportedly cause anemia, cancer, dementia, depression, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease and liver cirrhosis. At a recently held National Alcohol Conference in Canberra, the Australian Medical Association
warned that Australia has a drinking problem and that they need to address the culture of consumption of alcohol. The AMA president Brian Owler said “We need to shape our attitudes and culture to make sure we minimise people’s harmful alcohol consumption. We’re not against alcohol - we’re not prohibitionists or wowsers - but we need to make sure our children’s attitudes to alcohol are shaped properly.” Effects of Alcohol on Skin: Over time, excessive drinking of alcohol could have permanent, detrimental effects on your skin, which are summarized below: • Alcohol causes dehydration and over a period of time your skin becomes dry and wrinkled, making you look older than you actually are! It could lead to bloating and swelling. Additionally, alcohol depletes Vitamin A reserve which is crucial for the cell renewal process, another factor for the dull appearance of the skin. Thus hydrating from within by drinking plenty of water is the only way to combat the drying effects of alcohol. • Drinking excessive alcohol will also dehydrate your hair and make it more prone to breaking and split ends. • Excessive alcohol is known to hinder the production of vasopressin, which is an antidiuretic hormone. This puts extra load on the kidneys to remove excess water from your system, which in turn sends water to your bladder instead of your organs and you find the need to use the restroom more often.
• Alcohol is known to cause ‘Spider angiomas’, in which the blood vessels radiate out in all directions from a central vessel, seen mostly on the face, chest, neck, arms and hands. It is seen that a large number of these are linked to liver cirrhosis due to elevated level of estrogen. • Chronic alcoholic liver disease leads to palmar erythema or reddening of the palmar skin. In chronic liver disease, the metabolism of bilirubin is impaired leading to yellowing of the skin and sclera of the eyes (jaundicelike appearance). • Alcohol could worsen or flare up preexisting conditions such as rosacea. The increase in the blood flow by alcohol could cause dilation of blood vessels in your face. • Alcohol is known to suppress your body’s immune system, thus greatly reducing your body’s natural defense against cancer. Apart from other form of cancers, alcohol increases the risk of skin cancer namely squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and melanoma. • Drinking alcohol increases your caloric intake and is quite fattening. Just to give you an estimate, scientists say a pint of 4% beer or two double gin and tonics equals the calories in one burger. A large glass of wine reportedly has the equivalent kilojoules to a slice of cake. Thus the takeaway from this article is that alcohol not only affects your appearance, but it also wreaks havoc on your insides if you continuously drink beyond the limits.

Khajjiar
Khajjiar, often called as India’s Switzerland, is a hill station in Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh. The hill station is picturesquely set in the midst of magnificent ‘Deodar’ forests. The clump of reeds and the green meadow add an exquisite charm to this place. A small plateau in its green turf of dense pine and Deodar forests along its fringes adds to the pastoral scenery. This offbeat place in India has the rarest combination of three eco systems. The lakes, the pastures and the forests come together to make a visit to this place a unique experience. Hence, it is also popularly called theMini Switzerland of Himachal Pradesh.

Khajjiar was ruled by local royal Rajput kings who ruled the entire Chamba valley in the era of 6th century. Afterwards, it came under the Mughals during their reigning period and then under Sikh kingdom for some time. Then Britishers took over the place and after independence it became a part of Himachal Pradesh State on 15th April in 1948.
Geography:
Khajjiar is a small hill station in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh and is at a distance of 22 kms away from Dalhousie. It has a small lake, stream-fed, in the middle. The lake is covered with spongy weeds. This hill station is about 2000m (6500 feet) above sea level and is located at the foothills of popular Western Himalayas’ Dhauladhar ranges. This area is a part of Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary. The hill station is fully surrounded by dense forests and green meadows. The flourishing green meadows are bounded by thick cedar & pine forests. Khajjiar is widely famous for having a rare combination of 3 ecosystems all together – pasture along with lake and forest. The weather is extremely pleasant in summer while quite cold in winters. Winters in Khajjiar are accompanied by snowfall as well.

film PK, it’s time for the religious fundamentalists to train their trishuls on Salman Khan. Apparently, the next Salman Khan release Bajrangi Bhaijaan which is slated to open for Eid 2015 has already angered Hindu fundamentalists. In fact while protesting against PK some of these fundamentalists men-
tioned they wouldn’t “tolerate” Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The film’s director Kabir Khan has apparently been getting threats. Says Kabir, “I’ve been getting hate mail from a particular radical organization. They think the film promotes love jihad.” Under no circumstance is Ka-
bir Khan willing to change the title, let alone the content of his film. “I will never surrender to such absurd demands,” he says. In a related incident some Hindu organizations have asked for a ban on the Telugu film Gopala Gopala which is a remake of the controversial Umesh Shukla film
OMG Oh My God. On the basis of the trailer certain right-wing elements have found the content of Gopala Gopala to be “unparliamentarily”. It remains to be seen if the Andhra Pradesh government is able to stand up against the disruptive forces and allow the film to be released.

eteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai, who spent New Year’s Day in Agra visiting the Taj Mahal and meeting his family friends, says greed and a penchant to make quick money are the guiding principles of filmmaking nowadays. He said that his “films like “Vidhaata”, “Ram Lakhan” or “Karz” were not only entertaining and artistically crafted with catchy music but also conveyed messages. “They were Indian. Today the commercial concerns and the overall approach to filmmaking had changed”, he said in a media interaction. On the recent controversy related to Aamir Khan-starrer “PK”, he said “tax exemption should have come right in the beginning. Now there was a political angle to this move”. The film has been exempted from entertainment tax in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and this added fuel to the fire. Activists of the Bajrang Dal, Hindu Jagran Manch and Vishwa Hindu Parishad held demonstrations at several places, burnt posters of the film and shouted slogans to stop the screening of the film as they feel it hurst the sentiments of Hindus. Ghai also had some suggestions for movie industry. “There is a need to make films on Prem Chand’s literary heritage. (Also) acting could be introduced as a course in universities,” he suggested. Ghai’s films like “Pardesh” and “Vidhaata” have been extensively shot in Agra and now it is said that sequel to his 1989 released film “Ram Lakhan” could be shot in Agra.

New Year: Rejuvenation, Renewal And Rebirth
W
e are all in the habit of making New Year resolutions only to see them getting broken in a matter of days or weeks. These resolutions may centre around career, health, education or may be about overcoming certain bad habits. But doing without any goal is no answer. We ought to know where we are going!
January 2015 Edition
It is better to begin with some kind of target rather than entering the New Year with a blank mind. We can sort our lives into separate compartments and ensure that no area of living is neglected. Keeping physically fit by eating healthy food and exercise, improving finances through intelligent management of resources, taking steps for
career advancement, eliminating unhealthy addictions, contributing in some way to the betterment of the community are some areas that can do with some attention. Mental wellbeing is important. Take time out for prayer, meditation or fellowship. Bishop John H Vincent had got his resolution printed as follows: “I will this day try to live a simple, sincere and
serene life, repelling promptly every thought of discontent, anxiety, discouragement, impurity and self-seeking, cultivating cheerfulness, magnanimity, charity and the habit of holy silence; exercising economy in expenditure, carefulness in conversation, diligence in appointed service, fidelity to every trust and a childlike trust in God.” As you enter the unknown future, you may need faith to meet its challenges. A faith that can move mountains, a hope that keeps you going and above all love which keeps all relationships well-oiled can be so helpful. “Life without love is a disaster,” wrote German theologian Paul E Billheimer “The person who has made the most spectacular success but reaches life’s end without learning love has totally failed. Do not envy those in the limelight of publicity, those with scintillating intellects or those who have accumulated great wealth and all that it affords. If one hasn’t learnt to love in the process, his life is a disaster.” Look for opportunities to express this love; you will find them in plenty. As you go along, sow seeds of empathy, compassion and encouragement; appreciate and motivate people to do their best—your year will be enriched thereby.
Our sense of righteousness is colored by our selfishness, greed and pride and hence we should guard against these. Most conflicts among humans can be traced to a lack of concurrence on what constitutes righteousness. Life is often measured by time, and those who waste time, are actually wasting life. The fading of the past year and the dawn of the New Year must alert us to the need to live every moment of it. Since life is short we must determine to “redeem time.” Procrastination, idleness and aimless drifting have proved to be very costly to many would-be achievers. James Allen, spiritual writer, reminds us: “Every day is a new birth in time, holding out new beginnings, new possibilities and new achievements. The ages have witnessed stars in their orbits, but this day, no age hath witnessed. It is a new appearance, a new reality. It heralds a new life — yea, a new order, a new society, a new age. It holds out new hopes, new opportunities, to all. In it you can become a new man, a new woman. For you it can be the day of regeneration, renewal, rebirth. From the old past with its mistakes, failures, and sorrows, you can give rise to a new being, endued with power and purpose, and radiant with the inspiration of a new ideal.

There are no gimmicky action sequences in Tevar, says director

F
ans of Arjun Kapoor will see him in a new avatar, doing some intense action sequences in his next film, Tevar, which also stars Sonakshi Sinha and Manoj Bajpayee. The film, which is not a run-of-the-mill love story, also has its share of action. And we’ve been told that Arjun will be performing some high-octane stunts in it. To make this possible, the makers roped in action and stunt director Sham Kaushal, who has earlier worked with Arjun in Ishaqzaade (2012) and Gunday (2014), to chalk out action sequences that would look believable and realistic. Apparently, Sham chose to not watch the original Telugu film, Okkadu (2003), in order to avoid over-the-top stunts. Director Amit Ravindernath Sharma says, “Sham and I decided that the film will not have gimmicky stunts. The film’s action is relatable and believable; something a guy from a small town could pull off. Also, when you look at Arjun, his stature, voice, strength and the fact that he has an intimidating screen presence, makes him the quintessential action hero.” Sham agrees, adding that they “kept his strengths and weaknesses in mind while designing the stunts”. He further says, “He managed to perform all of them like a pro. Any young actor would have been overwhelmed with the scale of the final climax action sequence, but Arjun came in wellprepared and the results are there for everyone to see.” According to producer Sunil Lulla, the movie has all the essential elements of a commercial film.
He explains, “Tevar is an out-andout entertainer that has something for everyone — action, romance, drama and foot-tapping music. It’s the perfect film to flag off the new year.” But does Arjun see himself as a complete action hero? The actor says, “I don’t know how much of an action hero I am, but I will admit that, with this film, we pushed the envelope when it comes to action
and adrenaline-pumping stunts. We’ve received some great feedback and I hope we hit the bull’s eye with this one.” Arjun has also been receiving a lot of support from his uncle, Sanjay Kapoor, who has also produced the film. Sanjay says, “With Arjun’s height and structure, he looks believable while enacting action sequences.” Interestingly, Arjun isn’t the only
will soon be a global destination for Electronic Dance Music (EDM). In line with Dyk’s prediction, one of the most popular global EDM fests — Tomorrowland — is coming here soon. “India has all the right ingredients for EDM to get big here,” says the 48-yearold German DJ, who has been to India a few times before. “I first came here 15 years ago. And I remember I was in a Bollywood studio, where one guy played
this groovy beat. The song later went on to become one of the top numbers in Europe,” he says. However, Dyk feels that the reason why EDM will specifically do well here is because this form of music has a global culture, and India will surely influence the scene internationally. He explains, “Every time I have played here in the last 15 years, the audiences have only gotten bigger and better.”
one to have performed stunts in the film. He was joined by Sonakshi too. And she’s, naturally, excited about it. Sonakshi says, “It was great fun performing the stunts in the film. What’s different about the action in the film is the fact that you will not see 15 guys flying away with just one punch; it’s more real, and less exaggerated.” Boney Kapoor’s Tevar is presented by Eros International and
Sanjay Kapoor Entertainment Production. Produced by Sanjay Kapoor, Sunil Lulla, Naresh Agarwal and Sunil Manchanda, starring Arjun Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Manoj Bajpayee, the film is scheduled to release on January 9, 2015. Tevar will mark the directorial debut of ad film-maker Amit Ravindernath Sharma.

There cannot be any personal pictures for the simple reason that there was never a personal relationship. I think his ex-wife was the best person to clarify that. I suggest you write a story on the truth as opposed to cooperating with his vile and disgusting lies.” Ayesha’s advocate Rizwan Siddique said, “Had there been any substance in the claims of Mr Sahil Khan, he would have already submitted it to the court. It is a matter of record that despite two FIRs, he has not submitted anything till date and therefore this act proves a lot. arely a month after his business partner, Ayesha Shroff, alleged that he was gay to refute his claims that they were having an affair, actor Sahil Khan has requested a special court to hold an in-camera trial to show intimate pictures of him and her to the judge and prove his claim. Ayesha, who is married to actor Jackie Shroff, had filed a case against Khan in November alleging that he had cheated her to the tune of Rs 5 crore. Khan had contested the claim saying that she had spent the money on him as they were having an affair and Ayesha had retaliated saying Khan was gay. On November 18, she had also filed a case of defamation, molestation and criminal intimidation against him. Last month, Khan’s advocate had requested the special ABA court at the Sessions Court for an in-camera trial of his anticipatory bail application (ABA). Speaking to mid-day, Sahil Khan, said, “Yes, my lawyer has requested the court to hold an in-camera trial to reveal the truth because there are some intimate pictures of me and Ayesha which we have to show to the court. Ayesha has said so many things about me that I am gay and that we did not have physical relations - and she has left me no choice but to take all these things to the public.” Khan’s counsel, Nitin Desai, said, “We have requested the court for in-camera trial so we can show the intimate pictures

films in the ’90s, hasn’t done a lot of films ever since his last, Musafir (2004). After a six year hiatus, he
starred in Striker in 2010. While he got smaller roles in a few films since then, he is looking forward
to playing important characters now. The actor has three films in his bag already, and interestingly,
Aditya won’t shed his usual garb, and will be seen portraying grey shades in all the projects he is working on currently. When asked if he considers this as a comeback, the actor denies. “I didn’t go anywhere to come back. I am already here. I don’t believe in this comeback business,” he says, adding, “An actor, who faces the camera once, will remain an actor till he breathes his last.” Talking about the reason behind no getting prominent parts in films, the actor admits that he made mistakes in terms of selecting films. “I have made blunders. I was offered many movies, but I regret not taking them up. Those movies went on to become huge hits,” says Aditya, who will be seen playing a negative role in director Munnawar Bhagat’s film. “I play a gangster, who abuses his mother and wife. He loves them to an extent that he becomes overpossessive,” he says. Also, talking about the experience of working with his son, Sooraj Pancholi, who will soon make his Bollywood debut, he says, “When I go on the sets, I don’t see him as my son. I don’t even talk of him. I treat him just like a newcomer and maintain a professional relationship with him.”

Music Review :
Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene
T
he album begins with its worst track, and one of the most obnoxious songs we have heard in a while - ‘Selfiyaan’ (Khushboo Grewal singing with Manmeet and Harmeet of Meet Bros.), a song written by Kumaar and ‘composed’ by Meet Bros. Anjjan. With lyrics that have little rhyme and hardly any reason, this is a raucous number unleashing harsh voices and cacophonous orchestration in a bid to cash in on a clever hook - ‘Selfiyaan’ - a supposedly plural Hindi term for ‘Selfie’ treated with trendy phonetics - after all, we are in the age of ‘meherbaniyaan’, ‘madhoshiyaan’, ‘khamoshiyaan’ and more. The lyrics are suffused with double entendre, especially when Khushboo’s wannabe-sensual vocals come in ( ‘Baby peeche ka peeche ka / Darwaaza khula hai na baby peeche ka’). And we thought that we had outgrown this closet sleaze 20 years ago, after Roja, Dalaal and more! The overdose of incomprehensible Punjabi completes the damage. If that track was intolerable, the Dhruv Dhalla-composed ‘Dekh Le Kismet Yaar’ (sung by him with Jaspreet Singh and Pinky Maidasani) is just disappointing, though the lyrics (Manoj Yadav) are not too bad. The pace of the song comes across as frantic, as if they want to get the lyrics over with as rapidly as possible, and so there is barely any chance to breathe and make a mark for all the singers. Jubin Nautiyal-Asees Kaur sing the love duet ‘Dil Ka Funda’ composed by Sandeep Chaterjee and well-written by Tejpal
Singh Rawat. Asees’ tenor is similar to Shilpa Rao’s, and Jubin does a mellow job of his portion. The song sounds like a familiar throwback to various recent hits, but the soft instrumentation and lyrics make it worth a listen ( ‘Na
bangla na mehangi gaadi /Sapna hai mere paas / Dene ko hai bas mera dil / Phir bhi aaogi kya mere saath / Aaogi kya ?’ ). We now come to ‘Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene’, the title-track, sung and written by I.P. Singh

and composed by his band Faridkot. The hook ‘Kyoon ki sharafat gayi hai tel lene’ is catchy, but the rest of the song and lyrics do not measure up despite a seemingly sincere attempt. The rhythm is kept heavy and guitar-rich but
the song somehow does not connect. Overall: This is a humdrum album, even by today’s undemanding standards.

Mallika Sherawat’s cuss words in Dirty Politics
M
allika Sherawat and controversies go hand in hand, and for those who have been following her career right from the days of Khwahish which made news for its 17 kisses, there is nothing about the actress that really shocks anymore. Well, there was a surprise in store though when promo of her next, Dirty Politics, was recently launched. With cuss words galore being mouthed by her (in addition to other sexual references being made), she has managed to fetch attention all over again. This isn’t all as Censors haven’t raised any objections either. “Playing Anokhi Devi, an item girl turned politician, she makes a statement that goes as ‘Anokhi apna ghaaghra jhatkegi toh tere jaisa chaleeschu**ye niklenge,” says an observer, “It couldn’t be more explicit as this, since she also dances to a risque track ‘Mere ghaaghre ke liye ghamasaan machi hai’.” This isn’t all as another dialogue mouthed by her (in reference to Om Puri) is ‘Chu**ye buddhe ko akal aayi?’ Mallika Sherawat feels though that there isn’t anything wrong with her spoken words since the film is set in a realistic space. Says Mallika, “The setting of the film demands that we portray exactly how men or women talk on the ground level. My director (K.C. Bokadia) wanted to establish that milieu. Anokhi is a girl who comes from a poor family, dances to take care of her needs and then joins the world of politics. The people that she
deals with require her to go free on the language bit. I am doing what the film requires of me. I am comfortable with that.” No wonder, Mallika is pretty much joined by her male counterparts as well, what with Om Puri (who plays a politician being blackmailed by Mallika after a one night stand) stating - ‘Ek

Not just the promo, but even the film as a whole has been passed by them and that too without even a sin-
gle cut. We got an ‘A’ certificate and we gladly accepted.” Incidentally, the film features some really notable names, including Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri and Jackie Shroff. About Dirty Politics: On its launch a couple of years back, the film was said to be based
on the life of Bhanwari Devi, a nurse, who went missing after blackmailing Indian political figures for inappropriate sexual conduct. She was later found dead. However, K.C. Bokadia denied any similarities and mentioned that ‘people were unnecessarily jumping to conclusions’.

fter the likes of Murder, Jism, Jannat and Raaz series, brothers Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt went on a massive reinvention mode by backing films as different as Citylights and Mr. X. With a break being put into their earlier money making franchises, they decided to experiment. Now, after more than a year of hiatus, they have green lighted another franchise - Khamoshiyan. Confirms our source, “Yes, Khamoshiyan will have its own franchise. It was always there in Bhatts’ mind but first they wanted to gauge audience response to the Ali FazalSapna Pabbi film. They didn’t have to wait for long as the promo along with songs assured them that the film was on a right track. Now they are already working on next in the series.” With a quintessential Bhatt template of erotica, super natural and suspense elements, Khamoshiyan has been a brainchild of Vikram Bhatt who is said to have conceptualized Khamoshiyan as Haunted 2. Now with Khamoshiyan finding its own identity as a product, Vikram is expected to be in charge of next in the series as well. Says Mahesh Bhatt, “Khamoshiyan is the new age erotic supernatural narrative. It takes a quantum leap from our super successful franchise of the Raaz series and adds more VFX magic to that idiom. The Khamoshiyan franchise is here to stay.” Expected to roll in early 2016, the film in all likelihood star newcomers again.

orticulture producers have high hopes for a trade agreement with India, saying it has potential to be the next boom market for Australian fresh fruit and vegetables. In total, Australia’s trade with India was worth $15 billion in 2013. By contrast, Australian trade with China was worth more than 10 times that, around $160 billion. The chair of newly-formed industry group Voice of Horticulture, Tania Chapman believes India could mirror China’s growth as a destination for Australian fresh produce.

Australian fruit and vegetable producers excited about potential of India free trade agreement
“It’s almost akin to China in that middle class wealth, the ability to afford fresh fruit and vegetables, especially imported fruit and vegetables from Australia, is rising at astronomical rate,” she said. “As in China where, for citrus for example, we’ve gone from exporting five containers just four years ago, to 800 this year, that kind of astronomical growth is the kind of thing we have the potential to see in India.” The Trade Minister Andrew Robb is leading a business and government trade delegation to India this week, aiming to continue laying the
groundwork for a free trade agreement (FTA). The chairman of the Australian Horticultural Exporters’ Association, David Minnis, supports that push. “Potentially, with the historical ties we’ve got with India, and our love of cricket, we ought to be more prominent in that market, but we’re not,” he said. “One of the problems for us in India is that we’re probably the most expensive supplier, because of our high labour costs and transport costs, so we certainly would welcome a free trade agreement that would lower duties and allow us to become more competitive.” The Trade Minister Andrew Robb says there’s strong support for an FTA at the highest levels of the Australian and Indian governments, and he believes a deal could be struck before the end of the year. “It is possible. The timetable wasn’t just set by Prime Minister Abbott. In fact, the driver of a 12month agreement was really [Indian] Prime Minister Modi, and he’s said it publicly as well,” he said. “With the political leadership in both countries being hell-bent on finalising this in 12 months, that is a very major factor in the achievement.” Improved access to India would
be good news for an Australian horticulture industry that’s recently been shut out of some Asian markets. The latest, Vietnam, stopped issuing import permits for Australian fruit and vegetables from 1 January 2015, citing fruit fly concerns. That remains unresolved. But the Trade Minister rejects any suggestion that Australia has focused on striking new free trade deals, at the expense of maintaining existing markets. “No, I think there are particular issues with Vietnam,” he said. “The whole assessment and approval process for disease assessment of plants and animals is very important, and as an island it’s very important to us to maintain the most rigorous standards. “Other countries get frustrated sometimes at the time it takes to satisfy all these demands, and we’ll have to work our way through it. “Vietnam is an important, growing market in the region, they’re part of the TPP process. We will work through this and I think that will again reopen the opportunities for our own horticultural products.” But many in the horticulture sector believe the Department of Agriculture is over-stretched, and needs to be given more resources to chase new markets, while also
maintaining existing markets and developing effective quarantine protocols that will ensure it’s viable for Australian horticultural exporters to send produce to those markets. In the meantime, the Exporters’ Association’s David Minnis argues that Australia needs to use its limited resources more strategically. “There’s no doubt the resources within the Department of Agriculture in Canberra for market maintenance and market protocol development is under-resourced at the current time. “I think the loss of Vietnam is a good example, where we moved too slowly, we didn’t react to their concerns, we haven’t allocated enough resources to satisfactorily reach a conclusion quickly. “Ultimately, we will probably get back into Vietnam, but we could lose all of this season and that’s $40 million down the tube,” he said. “I’ve been saying, ‘what’s the point in still talking to the USA?’ We’ve had very few commercial successes in the USA, and if you have limited resources, then I would certainly consider moving them quietly out of the USA section and into Asia, because that’s where we’re going to kick more goals.”

he Australian government has warned that terrorists were planning attacks in India, and urged its citizens to “exercise a high degree of caution” while travelling through the country. “We continue to receive reports that terrorists are planning attacks in India and assess that attacks could occur anywhere at any time with little or no warning, including in locations frequented by Australians,” said a statement. The advisory asked Australians to “exercise a high degree of caution” in India. Australia’s
department of foreign affairs and trade said the warning applied to all parts of India. It pointed out that in mid-December 2014 Indian authorities increased security at Metro stations and other public spaces in New Delhi. Australian women have been advised to take particular care in all parts of India and exercise caution even if they were travelling in a group. “There are several regions of India where we advise Australians to reconsider their need to travel, or avoid all travel,” said the statement.

Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland Says Cricket Must Be For All Australians
M
ore cricket in more multicultural communities. That’s Australian Cricket’s vision, expressed by Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland. “Our goal is to be Australia’s fa-
vourite sport and to achieve this we must be a sport for all Australians,” Mr Sutherland said. In the likes Lisa Sthalaker (Indian descent), Gurinder Sandhu (Indian), Usman Khawaja (Paki-
stani), Clive Rose (Pakistani) and Ashton Agar (Sri Lankan), Australia’s South Asian communities have a growing presence at the top of Australian Cricket. However, it’s the community
level that Mr Sutherland says is vital to Australian Cricket’s vision to make sure all Australians, in particular those from South Asian communities, have the chance to enjoy cricket. Reaching these communities will take a specialised approach. For this, the National Community Engagement Framework has been created. The Framework is a customised resource for catering for Australia’s multicultural communities. It is an acknowledgement of – and response to – their needs. “Whether you are a girl or boy, man or woman, a player, umpire, volunteer, or administrator, our new Framework is designed to provide the same opportunities to be involved in cricket for all Australians,” Mr Sutherland said. There are currently 1.1 million Australians playing cricket, and counting. Firmly in Mr Sutherland and Australian Cricket’s minds are multicultural communities. Australian cricket’s vision is for people from these communities, in particular those from South Asia, to form 37 per cent of all participants by 2018. The number currently sits at 24 per cent. This is a significant aspiration
but, according to Mr Sutherland, it will bring cricket into line with the reality of the Australian population. “We recognise that Australian society continues to evolve and become more diverse. It is Australian Cricket’s task to adapt to our ever-changing society to continue to provide all Australians with the opportunity to get involved in cricket,” Mr Sutherland said. The likes of Sandhu, Khawaja and Agar at the top are an important public display of cricket’s growing diversity but it is clear that getting more kids playing at the grassroots is vital. The immediate response is dedicated junior multicultural participation programs MILO in2CRICKET, for kids aged 5-8, and MILO T20 BLAST, for those aged 8-12. Designed to introduce kids to the game and then give them the exciting experience of Twenty20, the programs are part of the push to get more Australians from multicultural communities playing cricket. Throughout the summer, free come and try days are running in communities across Australia. To find out more, visit www.playcricket.com.au.
Gilchrist: Cricket is the fabric of our society

A
dam Gilchrist is best known for his explosive on-field batting and world record feats behind the stumps to the likes of Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, but his post-playing life has taken on a profound new meaning. With his playing days over, getting more Australians, particularly those from Sub-continent communities, playing cricket has his attention. Gilchrist maintains a deep love of the Sub-continent having toured their many times with Australia and played six years in the Indian Premier League with Kings XI Punjap. Cricket is about more than simply participation, he says. It leads to a deeper connection with Australian society. “Cricket is Australia’s national sport,” Gilchrist said. “It is a sport that is a part of the fabric of our society.” “Our society now is multicultural, it is multifaceted, and there are many different talents and qualities of people within our communities.” Supporting Australia’s diverse communities is not a casual pursuit for Gilchrist. He is the chairman of the Australia Day Council, and an ambassador for Social Inclusion Week and RECOGNISE, the movement for constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians. This commitment to the community, combined with his revo-
lutionary contributions to cricket, led to Gilchrist’s appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia in 2010. Having been part of some of Australia’s most successful teams, Gilchrist knows the power and bond that comes with being part of a team. He says this is the importance of cricket and the responsibility the game
holds in Australia. “Cricket is striving to embrace all those particular parts of our community and ensure they are included as part of the game whether it is on-field or off-field in the club rooms,” he said. “Wherever it may be, it’s about inclusion and feeling part of the team.” Gilchrist is quick to assert it
isn’t simply good enough to talk about inclusiveness; real action and targets are vital. “Targets are vitally important,” he said, speaking about Australian Cricket’s recently launched National Community Engagement Framework. “We can talk about wanting to be inclusive and have a framework in place that incorporates
the game on a broader scale but without something to check it off against to see how we’re progressing it probably doesn’t amount to much.” “It’s a bold move to stand up and say these are our target points, these are numbers we want to hit, but I believe with the framework that’s in place we’ll be able to do it.”

llrounder Ravindra Jadeja, still recovering from a shoulder injury, and young left-arm spinner Axar Patel were on Tuesday included in India’s 15-member squad for the cricket World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand from next month. India World Cup Squad: MS Dhoni (capt, wk), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Stuart Binny, Umesh Yadav. Allrounder Stuart Binny also made the cut while there was no place for Murali Vijay and Robin Uthappa in the squad, announced by BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel after a selection committee meeting here. The five-man selection panel, however, ignored Yuvraj Singh, who was not in the list of the 30member probables but had come into reckoning after his three back-to-back centuries in the Ranji Trophy. Opener Shikhar Dhawan, who struggled in the ongoing Test series against Australia, has also been retained in the squad for the high-profile event to be held from February 14 to March 29. The squad, to be captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni has no major surprises with the selectors opting to go with four specialist pace bowlers -- Bhuvneshwar
Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav -- considering the pacy wickets in Australia and New Zealand. The 20-year-old Axar Patel, who has made a reasonably good impression in the few ODIs he has played, was expectedly picked in the squad, considering that Jadeja’s fitness could be an issue. The selectors have however taken some risk in picking Jadeja in the squad but Patel expressed confidence that the all-rounder will be fully fit before the biggest cricket tournament. ”Jadeja at present is undergoing rehabilitation programme. He is doing wonderfully well. We had detailed discussion with BCCI physio (on his inclusion) and we are confident that he will return to training within 10 days,” Patel said on Jadeja’s fitness. Patel said Yuvraj’s name was deliberated upon but they decided against selecting him. “Not only Yuvraj Singh but other names were also discussed apart from the 30 probables. There were deliberations between five selectors and captain Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher were on the conference call,” Patel said. The selectors also announced the team for the tri-series to follow the Test matches in Australia. Hosts Australia, India and England will compete in the tri-series. Kulkarni and Mohit Sharma have been included. Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane can perform the role of the opener while Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rayudu and Dhoni will bat in the middle order. The squad has three spinners in R Ashwin, Patel and Jadeja though it is highly unlikely that more than two spinners will be in the play-
ing XI during the matches. Despite the failures of Dhawan, particularly in the Tests, the selectors have reposed faith in the left-handed opener. About Ishant’s injury, Patel said: “Ishant Sharma has a knee injury. He’s doing well but has been advised by the BCCI Physio to not play the current Test. He has a knee related problem some
water retention,” Patel said. Team for ODI Tri-series: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (C), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Stuart Binny, Umesh Yadav, Dhawal Kulkarni and Mohit Sharma.

We are from the same place as well, Haryana. There is nothing wrong between us. I will be very happy if Sushil gets the award.” The sports ministry decided to recommend Saina for the Padma Bhushan award but insisted that it did not receive her nomination from the Badminton Association of India (BAI) within the stipulated deadline. “In view of the achievements of Ms. Saina Nehwal, the Department of Sports has decided to recommend her case for Padma Bhushan to the ministry of home affairs as a special case although the last date for making the recommendation is long over,” the ministry said in a statement. Thanking sport minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Saina said: “I am thankful to Mr Sonowal Sir for doing this and it’s a great support.” A disappointed Saina had stated that BAI had recommended her name for the Padma Bhushan in August last year but the sports ministry rejected her application, citing norms.

emale sex hormones called oestrogens may put women at greater risk from deadly allergic reactions, a new study has warned. The study could explain why men are less likely to be admitted to hospital with severe problems, researchers said. Researchers at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, US, found oestradiol, a type of oestrogen, enhances the levels and activity of chemical that drives life-threatening allergic reactions. When people suffer anaphylaxis - an allergic reaction triggered by food, medication or insect stings and bites -immune cells release enzymes which cause tissues to swell and blood vessels to widen.
January 2015 Edition
Although allergies usually only cause flushing or a skin rash, in extreme cases the swelling can lead to even heart attack. The study found female mice experience more severe and longer lasting anaphylactic reactions than males. Oestrogen influences blood vessels, enhancing the levels and activity of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), an enzyme ! that causes some of the symptoms of anaphylaxis. When the researchers blocked eNOS activity, the gender differences disappeared. Giving oestrogen-blocking treatments to female mice reduced the severity of their allergic responses to a level similar to those seen in males.

An hour of exercise curbs Parkinson’s effects
J
ust an hour of exercise thrice a week can help people with Parkinson’s disease improve their balance and even reduce risk of falling down in people with early stage of the disease, new research says. People with Parkinson’s disease experience trembling in hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face, rigidity or stiffness of the limbs and trunk, slowness of movement and postural instability. “These results suggest that minimally supervised exercise programs aimed at reducing falls in people with Parkinson’s should be started early in the disease
process,” said study author Colleen Canning from University of Sydney in Australia. Falling down is a common problem for people with Parkinson’s, with 60 percent falling each year and two-thirds of those falling repeatedly. “The resulting injuries, pain, limitations of activity and fear of falling again can really affect people’s health and well-being,” Canning said. For the study, 231 people with Parkinson’s disease either received their usual care or took part in an exercise programme of 40 to 60 minutes of balance and
leg strengthening exercises three times a week for six months. For those with less severe disease, a 70 percent reduction in falls was reported in those who exercised, compared to those who did not. But those with more severe Parkinson’s disease did not accrue much benefit in terms of reduced falling. Overall, those who took part in the exercise programme performed better on tests of ability to move around and balance, had a lower fear of falls and reported better overall mood and quality of life.

Another study found that when men ate about 1.5 cups of Brussels sprouts daily for 5 weeks, they had a 28% decrease in DNA damage. The researchers have concluded that the “consumption of cruciferous vegetables (including Brussels sprouts) may result in a decreased cancer risk.” The findings are published in the journal Carcinogenesis.

geing gracefully is on most of our wish lists. But while some of us may look young at 50, others look old even at 30. So what makes us age? And how do we reduce the signs and the process of ageing? We take a look at how we can slow down the ageing process. We first need to understand what makes us age. There are three factors that affect our ageing process: our genes, environment and diet. Ageing is a natural phenomenon and we all age over time. It is the free radicals in the cells that cause us to age earlier and faster. Free radicals are produced in our body during the various metabolic processes. But our lifestyle habits like: an unbalanced diet, untimely meals, frequent travel, stress, disturbed sleep, environmental pollution, exposure to the sun, partying and lack of exercise causes the production of excess free radicals in our cells. This causes oxidative stress that damages the cells, causing us to age. So, to delay the process of ageing inside-out we first need to get rid of the excess free radicals in the cells. Nutrients of various types and in varying quantities are needed to scavenge the free radicals in the cells. Each individual depending upon their DNA responds to nu-
trients differently. To supply the right type and amount of nutrients to an individual, we first need to know their DNA and its response to the nutrients. The science of studying the inter-relationship between the nutrients and genes is called Nutrigenomics. A DNA test can help us identify the type and quantity of nutrients suited for a person to delay his/
her ageing process. By supplying the essential nutrients in the optimal quantity depending on the DNA of the person we can delay his/her process of ageing at a cellular level. This optimal quantity of nutrients can be customized in the form of nutritional supplements and can be used to meet the optimal nutrient requirement of each person. Since we are delaying the pro-
cess of ageing at a cellular level through supplements we can also supply the right nutrients via customised external applications and delay the process of ageing inside-out. Since, the DNA of each person is unique, each solution is also customized to each individual. Since the nutrient requirement of each individual is different and unique, standardised nutri-
tion solutions are not enough. Personalising the nutrients as per the DNA of each individual is the future of health care and antiageing solutions. These premium products define personalization and the concept of tailor-made solutions in health care. Beyond just predicting the course of our health, we are now going a step further and designing customized solutions.

Skin patch to enhance healing of diabetes-related ulcers
A
ccording to the researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine, this safe and effective skin patch would deliver a drug that enhances the healing of diabetes-
related ulcers. The patch, which they tested in mice, may also serve as a way to prevent ulcer formation. The study’s lead authors are Dominik Duscher, MD, a post-
doctoral scholar in surgery, and Evgenios Neofytou, MD, an instructor at the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. Developing the skin patch raised a set of formidable challenges, which the Stan-
ford team took on, step by step, working with materials engineers led by co-author Jayakumar Rajadas, PhD. The DFO needed to be modified to penetrate the outermost
layer of the skin to activate the formation of new blood vessels, but its release also needed to be controlled to prolong the availability of the DFO at a therapeutic level. It took nearly four years of attempts before the team produced a solution: Envelope the DFO with a surfactant, which would lower the DFO’s natural surface tension and transform its molecules into microparticles that could penetrate the skin, then embed them in a pliable polymer matrix, a couple of millimeters thick, that would protect the fragile DFO microparticles and disperse them gradually as the matrix disintegrated. Duscher said that the mice tolerated it very well, which could bode well for humans. Once the patch was applied -- the moisture in skin makes a natural adherent -- the diffusion of the DFO begins and its molecules were drawn into the wounded tissue and skin. Not only did the wounds in the mice heal more quickly, Duscher said, but the quality of the new skin was even better than the original. The researchers also used the DFO matrix on a mouse with diabetes to see if it would prevent ulcer formation -- and it did. The researchers said that they were excited by the results and hope to start clinical trials soon to test this in humans. The paper is published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Simple home remedies to remove blackheads
A
s if pimples weren’t bad enough, women also have to worry about whiteheads and blackheads. Mostly found on and around the nose and the chin, blackheads can be painful to remove. Beauty experts say that a disciplined beauty regime and regular clean ups are an effective way to keep blackheads at bay. Here are some simple home remedies... * Steam is one of the best ways to open your pores and remove blackheads and whiteheads. *Steam your face for about five minutes. *Gently wipe your face and use a black-
head remover to squeeze them out. Remember not to apply too much pressure or you might end up scarring your skin. *Invest in a good quality face scrub and remove dead skin regularly. When it accumulates, it blocks pores, causing blackheads. You could make your own face scrub at home by using natural products like honey, almonds, milk or sugar. An effective home remedy is to grate a potato, rub it on your face and wash it off with lukewarm water. *Apply a moisturizer after patting your face dry with a soft towel.
