Air India Express pilot flirts with danger 4 times, grounded

I

t was a quartet of mistakes that could have had disastrous consequences. In the course of landing an aircraft in a strong crosswind, an Air India Express commander took four erroneous decisions, one after another, endangering a Boeing 737 aircraft and its 87 passengers. Luckily, it all ended with damage done only to the aircraft and the commander’s flying record. The potentially fatal incident occurred on November 3 on the Cochin-Salalah Air India Express flight IX 441 when it landed after three attempts at 9.45am, local

time. After a very rough touchdown, the Boeing 737 aircraft hurtled down the runway only to jerk sharply as two tyres burst. One wing almost scraped the runway surface and the landing gear was damaged before the aircraft came to a halt near the runway end. The commander was so flustered that even after the plane stopped, he kept the engines running and did not release his foothold on the brakes for about 15-20 minutes till an engineering team arrived to tow away the aircraft. Confirming the incident, the Air India Express spokesperson said:

“The landing was not in keeping with our standard operating procedures. It indicated a disregard for the SOP by the commander.” The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is investigating the matter. The series of faulty decisions began when the flight reached Salalah (Oman) airspace and the pilots were informed by the Omani air traffic controller that the wind speed on the ground was 25 knot (46 kmph) gusting (sudden bursts of high-speed wind) to 35 knot (65 kmph). “The aircraft should not have attempted a landing in

Salalah as the crosswind (wind blowing across the runway) speed was about 35 knot,” said a source. The SOP manual disallows a landing when the surface wind speed is beyond 25 knot, and in this case, it was not only about the wind speed but also about wind direction. Landing in a crosswind is more difficult, as an aircraft is prone to drifting laterally as it approaches the runway. At this point, the commander should have diverted the aircraft to Abu Dhabi, the alternate airport listed in the flight plan. An aircraft is flown to an alternate airport if the commander perceives that a safe landing is not possible at the destination airport (it is mandatory to carry enough fuel to fly to the alternate). There are instances where experienced commanders have managed to land safely in a strong wind and taken care to ensure that the flight safety department of the airline concerned was not informed about it. “But the best of pilots follow the norms. If a landing is in violation of an air safety norm, it is not done,” said a senior commander. The AI Express commander too tried to land in Salalah, but had to abort the landing. After the first failed attempt, he took the aircraft up 6,000 feet and after 10 minutes attempted a second landing, only to fail again. Finally, he decided to divert to Abu Dhabi, which is one hour, 15 minutes away. But that wasn’t the end of the matter. “The commander entered the wrong data into the Flight Management System and it threw up a scare,”

said the source. “It showed that only six minutes of flying time would be left on reaching Abu Dhabi, which was insufficient to make a landing.” In reality, the aircraft had 4.7 tonnes of fuel on board, and the fuel needed to reach and land safely in Abu Dhabi was 4.5 tonnes. But since the commander was under the impression that the aircraft was short on fuel, he panicked and decided to return to Salalah. It was now the commander’s third attempt at landing in Salalah in poor weather, which is something air safety experts warn against. Several airlines worldwide have banned a third attempt at landing at an airport in poor weather and made a diversion mandatory. Air India, however, does not have such a policy yet-the airline spokesperson said this was “under review”. During the third attempt, the commander decided to do an autoland although the cockpit crew was not trained to do so. In an autoland, the aircraft directly takes inputs from ground-based navigation instruments that give guidance to an aircraft on descent profile and horizontal manoevering. But there are wind speed restrictions for autoland, and a 35-knot crosswind is way above the permissible limit for a B737. “The commander also disregarded the limitations by Boeing Company for autoland operation,” said the airline spokesperson. “The matter is under investigation by our air safety department.”

Govt servers used for cyber attacks on China, other countries’ networks Picture source: Timesofindian.com

these attacks could be the result of the NIC servers being exploited by foreign entities.

I

nvestigators have unearthed a new and deadly pattern of cyber attacks in which Indian government servers have been used by foreign entities to target the computer networks of third countries.

penetrated the servers of the National Informatics Centre in recent months and used them to launch attacks on countries, including China. Among other things, the NIC hosts the official websites and emails of the Indian government.

The finding comes at a time when a dispute rages within the government over who should be responsible for protecting India’s critical IT infrastructure. According to sources, foreign entities have

“These attacks are mostly targeted against government networks of various countries, a source said, adding that the attacks were planned in such a way that investigators from the victim countries would believe

that they were launched from Indian government servers. Investigators suspect foreign government entities, including intelligence agencies, have a hand in exploiting NIC servers. They say since the attacks were targeted against Chinese government servers too, there is no scope to blame China. China had in August said that it had suffered about 250,000 cyber attacks from foreign entities, 8% of which had come from India. Sources now believe

Even as this new angle to India’s IT infrastructure security emerges, a turf battle is raging within the government about who should be protecting it. Sources said both the department of IT and the National Technical Research Organisation-the technical intelligence agency created after the Kargil conflicthad laid claims to being responsible for safeguarding India’s IT infrastructure. The department of IT believes the job should vest with the Computer Emergency Response Team while the NTRO says it must have the responsibility for both defensive as well as offensive cyber security. Meanwhile, conventional cyber attacks from foreign entities to extract confidential data from Indian government systems are on. Recently, the computer systems of the ITBP came under attack. There have also been attacks on the systems of the MEA, National Security Council secretariat and other departments.

Fiftythree-year-old Dinesh Patil, an assistant police inspector with the Mumbai police, finally won the battle with the apex court recently dismissing an application by his former wife Nisha (34) to continue using her ex-husband’s name after their divorce. “We are not inclined to interfere with the impugned order (passed by the Bombay High Court and family court), said the apex court. “There is no law governing the issue, said advocate R T Lalwani who represented Patil in the high court and family court. “The SC order can be cited as a precedent for any man who objects to his former wife whom he has divorced from continuing to use his surname.

India Post Ties-up with MoneyGram International to Offer Convenient Money Transfer Solutions

N

EW DELHI, September 29, 2011: India Post, the largest distribution postal network in the world, and MoneyGram International, the fastest growing global money transfer company, have joined hands in an offi cial launch ceremony in India’s capital – New Delhi, announcing the commencement of their tieup, graced by the presence of Shri Kapil Sibal, Hon’ble Minister of Human Resource Development, Communications & Information Technology, and Shri Sachin Pilot, Ministers of State for Communications & Information Technology and Ms Radhika Doraiswamy, Secretary Department of Posts and Shrimati Manjula Prasher, Member (Operations & Technology) Postal Services Board.

instant inward money transfer services. MoneyGram’s services will be extended to other Post Offi ces and Circles in the country in a phased manner. The service is expected to be available in 5,000 Post Offi ces in the country by 2014. India Post and MoneyGram have planned a joint marketing endeavor in a number of states.

At the ceremony held in New Delhi, Shri Kapil Sibal offi cially inaugurated the commencement of the longterm alliance by conducting a remittance transaction through the MoneyGram service, displaying the ease of the monetary transaction.

After launching the service, Shri Kapil Sibal, Hon’ble Minister of Human Resource Development Communications & IT said, “according to the World Bank, remittances to developing countries are estimated to have reached $325 billion in 2010. India is the world’s largest inward remittance market. Last year, the country received $53.1 billion in remittances. These remittances provide source of livelihood for millions of poor households. International inward remittances to rural areas support fi nancial inclusion initiatives of the Government of India. India Post, with its network of over 155,000 post offi ces, plays a pivotal role in achieving the objective of fi nancial inclusion. I can say with pride that this has been possible because of the honest and hardworking

work force of India Post. The partnership between India Post and MoneyGram is expected to increase transactions from key remitter countries, including the United States, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Saudi Arabia.”

Starting October 100 important Post Offi ces in Delhi, Punjab and Tamil Nadu Circles will begin offering MoneyGram

Shri Sachin Pilot, Hon’ble Minister of State for Communications & IT, in his address said “international inward remittances are playing an increasingly large role in the economies of many countries, contributing to economic growth and to the livelihoods of less prosperous people. For some small developing countries, inward remittances are as high as a third of their GDP. For India, remittances contributed to 3.6% share of GDP in 2009. The Indian Diaspora is estimated to be over 30 million. This partnership with MoneyGram will provide valuable service to those customers, particularly in rural areas, who are not fully served by banks and other fi nancial institutions. This

service needs to be expanded to more number of post offi ces at the earliest.”

Ms. Radhika D o r a i s w a m y, Secretary, Department of said, “India Post has long been in international money transfer service through its traditional paper-based Money Order service to many countries. This tie-up will help India Post to provide valuable service to our customers in a fast, convenient and cost-effective manner.” Shrimati Manjula Prasher, Member (Operations & Technology) Postal Services Board said “all departmental post offi ces numbering around 25,000, which are already computerized, are expected to be covered under Core Banking Solution (CBS) by 2012-13. Plans are afoot to provide Rural ICT to all 1.3 lakh branch post offi ces in the country.

the world’s largest remittance receive market and the value MoneyGram brings India Post’s business and customers. Bringing India Post, one of the world’s largest postal services to our network is very exciting. We are proud to work with such a prestigious network partner and this relationship fuels our goal to help more people by providing India Post’s millions of customers with affordable, fast and reliable money transfer services.” MoneyGram views it as benefi cial to align with national postal systems, as these provide consumers with a uniquely convenient and reliable way to access affordable money transfer services. With the addition of the India Post, MoneyGram now has agreements with more than 20 global post offi ce networks, including Canada, Jamaica, Kenya, Italy, Morocco, Moldova, Poland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

Maoists more dangerous than terrorists: Mamata

Anna Hazare

S

ocial activist Anna Hazare has said Sachin Tendulkar should be conferred with the Bharat Ratna, joining a long list of admirers who have demanded the country’s top civilian honour for the cricketer. “Sachin Tendulkar is an icon for Indian youth. He has made India proud with his exploits in cricket. I feel he deserves the Bharat Ratna,” the anti-graft crusader said after inaugurating a tennis tournament in memory of his late mother Laxmibai at his native

village Ralegan Siddhi. The 38-year-old Tendulkar has to his name most of the batting records in Test and ODI cricket, including being the highest runscorer and century maker in both formats, besides being the only male cricketer to score a doublehundred in ODIs. He is on the brink of becoming the first cricketer ever to score hundred international centuries, having already hit 99 tons (51 in Tests and 48 in ODIs).

T

alking tough after fresh Naxal violence in West Bengal, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said Maoists were more dangerous than terrorists and warned that her government would not remain a mute spectator. The Trinamool leader also hit out at the Maoists saying they cannot talk peace and kill people. Mamata’s warning came a day after the Maoists offered to extend their unilateral ceasefire offer by four months if the operation by Joint Forces was kept suspended for the same period. “You cannot talk peace and kill people. We cannot sit back and watch. We have to maintain law and order. We cannot suck our fingers when the killings go on,” she said, adding Maoists were more dangerous than terrorists. Mamata, however, said, “I still feel good sense will prevail on them and they will come back to the mainstream. If they come to the mainstream, the state government will take responsibility. It is a duty of the government to give protection to people.” The chief minister was speaking at a meeting to mourn the killing of two Trinamool supporters by the Maoists at Balarampur in Purulia district on Monday. Mamata claimed some people were helping the Maoists with money and shelter. “The government is keeping a watch on them,” she said and urged people to stay vigilant about their activities, paticularly in Uttarpara in Hoogly district and activities of students of universities like the Jadavpur University. “I know all people are not bad, but you must keep a watch,” Banerjee said.

Facebook identifies Dawood Ibrahim held in those responsible for high esteem in Pakistan: porn in newsfeeds Pervez Musharraf F P Picture source: chillhour

akistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf has said that although he can’t confirm gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s presence in Pakistan, the suspected mastermind behind the 1993 Mumbai multiple bombings, is held in “high esteem” by many in his country making his extradition “complicated”. In an interview to NDTV, Musharraf, who is in exile in London, reiterated he was close to sealing a deal on Sir Creek and Siachen in 2007 and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was planning to visit Islamabad for it. That visit would have changed history, he said. He also stressed that notes were exchanged at the highest level on Kashmir and the two leaders “were trying to move forward in drafting the deal”. “They think that he (Dawood) did a very good job... Because Indians killed 3,000 Gujaratis. In Gujarat they killed 3,000 Muslims,” Musharraf said when asked about the prospects of the extradition of India’s most wanted to India.

Dawood Ibrahim

“Therefore Dawood Ibrahim reacted. So he is held in high esteem. This is what happens in Pakistan,” said Musharraf, who was president of Pakistan for nine long years. “Yes, it must not be. It must not be, no. I won’t agree. I agree with you. It should not be. But things are not as simple. That is what I am trying to say. I think things are very complicated. They are not simple,” he replied when asked whether the response to Gujarat riots should have been through bombings and terror. Musharraf’s comments suggest

that Ibrahim may be given refuge in Pakistan, which contradicts the assurance he gave to BJP leader LK Advani in 2001 in Agra. “...You would be making a great contribution to the peace process if you handed over to India Dawood Ibrahim,” Advani said in a blog recently. “Mr Advani, let me tell you emphatically that Dawood Ibrahim is not in Pakistan,” Advani quotes Musharraf as saying. Pakistan has consistently denied that Ibrahim was in that country despite India maintaining that that he continues to live in a palatial house in Karachi.

acebook Inc has identified those responsible for the recent deluge of hardcore porn and violent images in some users’ newsfeeds, and said it is working with its legal team “to ensure appropriate consequences follow.” The social networking company made the statement after porn, pictures of extreme violence and faked photos of celebrities such as Justin Bieber in sexual situations had overrun the profiles of some Facebook users. Had Facebook not quickly stanched the inundation, the company ran the risk of losing some of its more than 800 million active users, said security researcher Sophos Ltd, based in Abingdon, UK “Facebook needs to get this under control, because the content is so offensive,” said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos. “Some people may quit Facebook.” Earlier today, Facebook said it had “drastically limited the damage caused” by a spam attack that took advantage of a browser vulnerability. “Protecting the people who

use Facebook from spam and malicious content is a top priority for us,” Palo Alto, California-based Facebook said in a statement. Users were tricked into pasting malware into their browsers, which in turn resulted in the sharing of offensive content, Facebook said. “We’ve built enforcement mechanisms to quickly shut down the malicious Pages and accounts that attempt to exploit it,” Facebook said. Facebook users lamented the images on microblogging service Twitter Inc. “Has anyone been on Facebook lately?” tweeted Jay Ciroc, who identifies himself as a recording artist living in New Jersey. “My newsfeed looks like a porn site.” Some Twitter users said they’ll quit Facebook as a result.

Women farmers reap their harvest farm produce and where would I get a good price,” she told TOI. B e s i d e s fruits and vegetables, she ventured into dairy products and fishery too. Her annual income goes up to Rs 10 lakh, with a profit of Rs 5 lakh. It was a proud moment for 16 women like Kamalamma who won district and taluk level awards for excellence in agrobusiness. Their faces lit up on being called on stage as the best farmers of the year. These women bagged awards and cash prizes not because they produced crops and farm products in huge quantities but also for experimenting with different farming methods which have inspired other agriculturalists.Shanthamma of Chintamani taluk has been assisting her father ever since she was a six-year-old. “I am in the agri-business for about 29 years now and without the support of my husband and family, I would have never reach this stage,” she said Picture source: farmersindia

t is one of the oldest professions and it comes naturally to them. Tilling, sowing, harvesting is all part of a hard day’s work, and women farmers, until now in the shadow of their menfolk, have come into their own. Like Kamalamma from Mayaganahalli of Ramanagaram district, who took to farming after her SSLC. That was more than two decades ago. Never once did she dream that she would get an award for it. On Wednesday, the mother of two stood proudly on stage to receive a state award for excellence in farming at the five-day National Krishi Mela 2011 that got under way at the Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra (GKVK) in Bangalore on Wednesday.”I started with some vegetables and ragi on a small piece of land, and then got my family support,” said Kamalamma, after winning the award. She grows ragi, sapota, mango, papaya and seasonal fruits on her 10acre farm. She also trained in farming and educative information from GKVK and the gram panchayat. Her husband holds a diploma in mechanical engineering, and her two children are studying II PU in Ramanagaram, but her family helps her in farming and looking after her business. “I was given all necessary information regarding the type of seeds and manure for my farm. Even how I could sell my

Shanthamma is into rearing silk cocoons, and faces the same fate as other silk growers do in a state facing heavy import duty. “This will go on, but my business is doing well. I get support from agriculturalists to better the rearing processes and I continually interact with them,” she added. She was one of 12 women awarded at the taluk level.Pallavi B from Byaradenahalli of Devanahalli taluk said she disliked farming early on, and never knew that one day it would bring her such honour. “I wanted to become an urban woman working in

a government office, but now I understand my responsibility of feeding thousands of people,” said Pallavi. Her husband assists her and they’ve r e c e n t l y e x p l o r e d o r g a n i c farming. “We come to GKVK for information a n d sometimes, agriculturists also come to our villages to train us. I’ve started organic farming and the yield is much higher than the investment made as the market need is shifting towards organic farm foods,” she said. Pallavi said such recognition for women farmers would not only encourage them to stay back in their villages and continue farming but also increase the potential of business for women in rural India. Sujatha N from Sidlaghatta taluk and Kalavathamma from Gudibande taluk, who have been farming for the past 15 years, were also felicitated. Ask how she feels, and pat comes Sujatha’s answer: “In every field of work, you have to work hard to reap

profits. I have been in the agro-business for 15 years and today, my toil and sweat on the fields have earned me recognition. I want my children to get into farming and manage the business when I am old.”CAPTIONFARM FRESH: Technology and farming can go hand in hand - this was the focus of Krishi Mela 2011 held at Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Bangalore on Wednesday. MP D B Chandregowda, Youth Congress leader Krishna Byre Gowda, and K Narayana Gowda, University of Agricultural Sciences vicechancellor, inaugurated the five-day event and awarded 32 farmers from across the state for their contribution to farming. Stalls were put up by tractor, farm equipment and irrigation pipeline companies. Some stalls sold hybrid seeds and also disseminated information. On display were hybrid tomatoes, cabbage, chillies, carrots, baby corn, bell peppers and even spinach THE REAPERSKamalamma, RamanagaramJagadambika, GowribidanurAnitha, PutturBaby Naik, UdupiKR Bhagyalakshmi, DoddaballapurA Savitha, HoskoteVijayalakshmi, NelamangalaB Pallavi, DevanahalliAshalatha, UdupiSurekha Bhandarkar, KundapurPratibha Kulagi, MangaloreE Gayathri, ChikkaballapurShanthamma, ChintamaniSharadamma, Chikkaballapur N Sujatha.

Three suicide bombers blew Skoda launches up their explosives-laden van sedan Rapid

Raj Rajaratnam

T

hree suicide bombers blew up their explosives-laden van when they were challenged by police on the seafront of Karachi in southern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing two policemen. The three terrorists were travelling in the explosives-laden van when police asked them to stop in Seaview area of Karachi at about 10pm. The men were killed when they detonated the explosives in the van, superintendent of police Tariq Dharejo told the media. “Police tried to stop the vehicle and they blew themselves up. The three men were killed and we have found weapons at the spot... One of the men was wearing a (suicide) vest,” Dharejo said. Two policemen, who were chasing the van on a motorcycle, were wounded by the blast.

Award Winner Chief Ch f SATWINDER SAINI Introduced for the first time in Australia

Both of them succumbed to their injuries later, police officials said. The blast occurred in an uninhabited area along the seafront located a short distance from a park and a restaurant. “The policemen were chasing the Suzuki highroof and exchange of fire took place and after a chase the men in the car apparently detonated themselves resulting in the blast,” an official said. The bombers may have been planning to target a hotel or a ‘mela’ (fair) to be held in the area, officials said. TV news channels said intelligence agencies had warned of a possible attack with an explosives-laden vehicle in Karachi. Footage on television showed the body of one of the alleged terrorists, a bearded man wearing a shalwar-

kameez. The bloodied body lay a short distance from the mangled debris of the van, which was destroyed by the blast. Police found several suicide vests, grenades, night vision goggles, AK47s, a wig and a burqa in the wreckage of the van, officials said. A bomb disposal squad was called in to defuse the suicide vests and grenades. The wig and burqa apparently gave rise to speculation that a woman was present in the van with the terrorists. This is the second suicide blast in the same area in Karachi. On September 19, terrorists rammed an explosive-laden truck into the residence of a senior police official of the anti-terrorism wing, killing eight people.

A part of auto conglomerate Volkswagen, the company’s wholly-owned subsidiary Skoda AutoIndia expects the Rapid to become its best-

selling car in the country, surpassing compact car Fabia’s numbers. “India is a very important market for us. There was a gap between our compact car Fabia and the sedan Laura. To fill that gap, we have launched the Rapid in the C segment,” Skoda Auto India Marketing Head Tarun Jha told reporters here.

A Mathura sessions court on Wednesday awarded death penalty to eight people and life sentence to 27 for an honour killing that took place 20 years ago. Those convicted were members of a village panchayat, most of them over 60; the then village pradhan is 95. On March 25, 1991, the Mehrana village panchayat ordered the public hanging of local Jat girl Roshni, Vijendra Jatav , with whom she had eloped, and their friend Ramkishan for helping them. The couple ran away on March 21 and returned three days later. After a hearing that lasted all day and night, the panchayat ordered that the trio be hanged.

juvenile justice board. The board is likely to decide on the case on November 24, the defence lawyer said. In the FIR lodged with the Barsana police station in Mathura, Ramkishan’s uncle Amir Chand alleged that the couple were brutally assaulted during the hearing and their private parts set on fire. Vijendra pleaded and promised to flee the village but the elders didn’t relent, said the case diary. When his relatives tried to resist, they were held hostage until the diktat was executed.

Mathura’s district sessions judge A K Upadhyay held 35 of the 54 accused guilty, and acquitted only one. Of the remaining 18, 15 died during trial. The remaining three - including Roshni’s younger brother - were minors at the time of the crime and their trial is pending before the

Falling rupee stares at uncharted waters

May breach 52 level against $; inflation pressures worsen. Global risk aversion and India’s widening current account deficit have dragged the rupee close to all-time low levels against the dollar. Any fresh trigger from the troubled euro zone may push the Indian currency to the level of 52 against the dollar, say forex traders and economists. The rupee on Wednesday fell by seven paise to close at 50.73 against the dollar, inching closer to the alltime low of 51.97 seen in March 2009. The Indian currency has lost around 15 per cent against the dollar in the past three months. Traders said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) intervened in the foreign exchange market to contain volatility. The central bank was seen active in the three-month and six-month forward segment when the rupee was trading around 50.95. After that, the rupee cooled off towards the end of the day’s trade. RBI deputy governor Subir Gokarn had said yesterday it did not target any specific exchange rate but would intervene only to curb excess volatility. “India’s deteriorating current account balance is working negatively on the rupee. Exports are showing moderation while imports remain robust, leading to an outflow of

man stabbed his wife to death after an argument over Rs 100 on Tuesday. Pydhonie resident Arundathi Mardagamini was taken to St George Hospital, but doctors were unable to save her. Arundathi’s husband, Illyaraja, was arrested on Wednesday evening from Dongri. “Illyaraja fled after attacking his wife. Arundathi’s friends took her to the hospital and filed a case. The body has been sent for post-mortem,” said R G More, inspector of Pydhonie police station. The prime witness in the case is the couple’s son, Kishore Kumar (12), who saw his parents quarrelling followed by his mother getting stabbed. According to the police, Arundathi’s mother, Bhanumati, was leaving for Chennai on Tuesday and she gave Rs 100 to Kishore as a present. However, once she left Illyaraja snatched the money from his November 2011 Edition

son, however, Arundathi told him to return it, the police added. When Illyaraja refused Arundathi reprimanded him. “Later, Arundathi was cutting some fish in preparation for dinner. An irate Illyaraja stabbed her in the chest with the knife she was using. He pursued her and stabbed her in the back repeatedly. Arundathi passed away around 6 pm on Tuesday,” said a police officer. “When Bhanumati was informed of her daughter’s death, she was in Solapur. She caught a return train to Mumbai and reached on Wednesday. The couple’s three children, Kishore, Monu (3) and Rani (2) will be in her custody,” the officer added.”Illyaraja was a womanizer. He would lose his temper every time Arundathi questioned him about his relationships,” Bhanumati said. “My father never gave us any money would always beat us up at the slightest provocation,” said Kishore.

dollars,” says Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at rating agency CARE. Given the adverse outlook on international trade and persistence of the debt crisis in Europe, the rupee may remain weak and touch 52 a dollar by the end of 2011, he says. Consistent demand from oil importers, amid a strengthening dollar and fund outflows, is adding to the rupee’s woes. According to the Bombay Stock Exchange, there were net foreign fund outflows of Rs 488 crore on Wednesday as domestic equity markets fell around 0.7 per cent on Wednesday. Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday said the central bank was closely watching the situation and would intervene if necessary. Data show the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)

sold dollars in September, a month the rupee fell 6.25 per cent. “An RBI intervention at these levels may not help in the absence of similar action by other central banks,” says a forex dealer with a private bank. While importers are stuck with dollar payments, exporters are still holding on in expectation of a better rate. On Tuesday, Kaushik Basu, chief economic advisor to the ministry of finance, said any bad news from the euro zone was bound to affect India. He said rupee depreciation was adding to inflation pressures. International oil prices are ruling high. A weakening rupee is adding to importers’ costs, ultimately leading to higher prices for consumers.

Eyeing China, India to enter ICBM club in 3 months

India will become a full-fledged member of the ICBM club only when its most ambitious nuclear capable Agni-V ballistic missile becomes fully operational in 2014

The countdown has begun. Within three months, India will gatecrash the super-exclusive ICBM (inter-continental ballistic missile) club, largely the preserve of countries like the US, Russia and China that brandish long-

November 2011 Edition

range strategic missiles with strike ranges well beyond 5,500 km. However, it will become a fullfledged member of the club only when its most ambitious nuclearcapable Agni-V ballistic missile, which will be able to target

even northern China if required, becomes fully operational in 2014. Gung-ho a day after the successful test of the newgeneration 3,500-km Agni-IV missile, senior defence scientists on Wednesday declared that Agni-V, with a strike range of over 5,000-km, would be test-fired within the December-February time-frame. “The three-stage Agni-V is undergoing integration at the moment...it’s on schedule,” DRDO chief V K Saraswat said, adding that both Agni-IV and V were comparable to the best missiles in their class, including Chinese ones, as far as the technology was concerned. Agni programme director Avinash Chander said his team was “confident” of offering the 17.5-metre-tall Agni-V for induction to the armed forces by 2014. The much-lighter two-stage Agni-IV will be operational by 2013 after two to four more “repeatable” tests. “Our aim is to take just two to three years from the first test to the induction phase,” he said. Once deployed, the 20-tonne Agni-IV and 50-tonne Agni-V will add the much-needed muscle to

India’s nuclear deterrence posture against China, which has a huge nuclear and missile arsenal like the 11,200-km Dong Feng-31A ICBM which is capable of hitting any Indian city. With higher accuracy, fast-reaction capability and road mobility, unlike the earlier largely rail-mobile Agni missiles, Agni-IV and V will give India the required operational flexibility against China since they will be capable of being stored and swiftly transported. If launched from the north-east, for instance, they will be able to hit high-value targets deep inside China. India, however, is not in an arms race or “numbers game” like the US-Soviet rivalry of the Cold War era. “We are not looking at how many missiles China or Pakistan has. With a ‘no firstuse’ nuclear weapons policy, we only want a sufficient number of missiles to defend the country in the event of a crisis. Ours is a defensive-mode strategy, even if others have offensive postures,” Saraswat said. The DRDO chief added that “indigenous content” in India’s strategic missiles had gone up to such a level, with ringlaser gyros, composite rocket motors, micro-navigation systems

and their ilk, that “no technology control regime” could derail them any longer. Then why not go for missiles that can fly around 10,000 km? DRDO claims that it has the capability to develop such missiles but the government does not want alarm bells to clang around the globe. India, after all, is interested only in “credible minimum deterrence” against the threats it faces. Saraswat said the current focus was on fine-tuning the Agni missiles to defeat anti-ballistic missile systems of potential adversaries. Towards this end, added Chander, the radar and other “signatures” of Agni-IV have been significantly reduced to make them “much more immune to counter-measures”. What will make the Agni missiles even more deadly is the development of MIRV (multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles) warheads on which the DRDO is working. An MIRV payload on a missile carries several nuclear warheads, which can be programmed to hit different targets. A flurry of such missiles can completely overwhelm BMD ( ballistic missile defence) systems.

Shah Rukh khan will be seen in a very rough-tough look without any compromise in his Don style. The movie features the same don tune with little tweaks while the scenes are more exciting with the special effects and advanced modern presentation of the characters and environment. The international version is also being planned for international launch which would be devoid of songs and little drama. Many people are fans of the one and only Shah Rukh khan. BOLLYWOOD MUSIC Rockstar

R

O C K S TA R . . . R O C K MUSIC, A.R RAHMAN and what more to expect! Post TAAL (1999), this is the first major musical endeavor from the maestro in the league of musicaloriented entertainer that also brings out many commercially bankable names in the credits. This time director Imtiaz Ali, who had tremendous musical success in his last two flicks (JAB WE MET and LOVE AAJ KAL, both composed by Pritam), changes his loyalty to the great A.R Rahman, with a promise to allure international audiences with his style of composing. ROCKSTAR is also special in a big way as it brings out the finest of international musicians in its baggage and packs a solid 14 original soundtracks in its audio packaging. Fuelled, inspired and displayed with immense passion and zeal, the music of ROCKSTAR is already anticipated with baited breath, as promos of songs like ‘Saadda Haq’, ‘Katiya Karoon’ and ‘Jo bhi main’ have clicked well with listeners. Can this album be the desired ROCKSTAR among its contemporaries? Will Rahmaniacs be blessed again with a chartbusting hit album? Let’s get straight into the arena of this rollicking rock-music mania and gets the musical facts... It starts where...it ended! Mohit Chauhan’s soulful hue that was mesmerizing in mild tones in ‘Dooriyan’ (LOVE AAJ KAL) makes an echoing reappearance with tender-feel arrangements in beautifully composed ‘Phir se

udd chala’. Rahman’s composing picks up an earthen modest melodic feel, exhibited cohesively in expressions in Irshad Kamil’s lyrics, that gets amalgamated with techno-generated orchestrations and creates a ‘lounge’ feel ambience. Mohit’s sonorously somber voice is paced amiably with soft displays of delectable mandolin notes, guitar riffs, synchronized electronic fillers and lovable chorals with hookline (‘tu-tu-tu-ru’) that works brilliantly to conceptualized a desired dreamy situational feel. Unlike its ‘yuppie’ friendly title (ROCKSTAR), Rahman prefers a motivational musical start to the album that also sets a melodramatic prelude to the journey of ‘rags-to-riches’ of the lead protagonist. Soothing!!! Arena-rock and the following crowd-pulling entourage are all out there to entertain and the first major jolt of ‘rollicking’ happenings on concert-floors comes in the form of ‘Jo bhi main’. Light-hearted guitar strums, cool-mentholated breezy vocals, infectious drumming and hookline (‘Oh-ya-ya-ya...’) brings out the zeal of a lively concert show. Mohit Chauhan’s experiments this time with singing sounds of guitars, followed with his varying soothing baritones that strikes chords with the groovy rock-feel and enlightening chorals in the backdrop. For all those who have cherished numbers like ‘Rock On’ (ROCK ON) and ‘Alvida’ (LIFE IN A METRO), it will be a delight to hear Rahman getting into the soul of archetypical rock music

with flair. Go for it! Whether it was intrinsically Sufi ‘Khwaja mere Khwaja’ (JODHAA AKBAR) or divine ‘Arziyan’ (DELHI-6), there was a marvelous divinity in Rahman’s composing that worked big times in impressing purists, critics and classy listeners. ‘Kun Faya Hun’, an ode to the greatness of Nizammudin Auliya in form of devotional ‘qawalli’, adds to this beautiful collection that has intense spiritual significance with soulful interaction with God Almighty. Irshad Kamil delivers the performance of a lifetime this time and should be proud of delivering it with finesse in a track that is not only difficult to write but also desires loads of literature strength. For the first time maestro A.R. Rahman comes behind the mike along with Javed Ali and

Mohit Chauhan and renders it with sheer piousness. In terms of arrangements and composing, Rahman prefers a subtle traditionalism in instrumentals and maintains the soulful decorum of the great Nizammudin Auliya with immense grace and appeal. Rhythm-divine!!! The music of ROCKSTAR takes a chill-pill and relaxes to some extent in situational sounding ‘Sheher Mein’. It’s a thematically driven simple number that takes an introspective view of ‘recording-room’ where singer practices with his lines, passes remarks and finally picks the desired ‘sur’. Mohit Chauhan along with Kartik sings this lighthearted number and adds few jovial moments to this intense emotional saga. ROCKSTR takes an

international explore in fast-paced salsa number ‘Hawaa Hawaa’, an impulsively composed dance number that brings an arrays of peculiar sounding instrumentals, foot-tapping sounds and varied pitched voices. This time Rahman enters into least explored genre in Hindi filmdom that was last heard in ‘Udi’ (GUZAARISH) and comes out with a vibrant melodic ‘swirling-twirling’ dancing feel. Mohit Chauhan’s versatility in impersonating many moods and styles shows his genius that gets embroidered well with snazzy sounding back-up supports of Viviane Chaix, Tanvi Shah, Suvi Suresh and Shalini. It’s a visually spectacle soundtrack and a ‘tailormade’ dancing feast number for all TV reality dancing shows that should also work positively for a promising big-screen feast.

Space-based solar power collectors possible in twenty years With the planet facing a global energy crisis, researchers and scientists have been working to create renewable energy sources to satisfy the power consumption demand. Clearly thinking outside the box, there is an interesting report from the International Academy of Astronautics that states that there could be a working space-based solar energy platform in just 20 years, with enough energy being produced for the entire globe in just 30. The report cites technology that is currently being researched in labs is what is needed to create such a platform. The idea is a simple one, deploy solar collectors that are several miles wide into space, and put them in orbit around the equator, allowing them to capture the sun’s rays around the clock. Once the solar energy is collected, the satellites would then convert it into consumable power, which could then be beamed back to Earth in

the form of microwave energy or, more awesomely, lasers. This isn’t a new idea by any means, but one that has been ruled out in the past because of the astronomical cost of launching deployment vehicles from the planet to pick up energy that has been stored and return with it. After conducting a three-year study, the IAA says that the technology exists to make beaming the energy down to collectors on the surface a reality. This model is ideal because space-based satellites won’t have to deal with weather, atmosphere, and other obstacles that hinder the collection of solar energy. It would also cut down on fossil fuel emissions since solar is “clean” energy. Critics of the study say that the IAA didn’t do broad enough research, or an accurate cost analysis in its findings. They are afraid that the cost of development is still going to be prohibitive.

Microsoft CEO: Windows era is everlasting “It will be a tablet machine; a reading machine, and a note-taking machine,” he said. “We are going to have to push Windows into more form factors.” The Windows 7 operating system and the latest version of Office software have been selling at unprecedented rates to businesses while rivals Apple and Google have won consumers hearts when it comes to smartphones and tablets. When called upon to explain Microsoft’s plan to protect freedom of expression while doing business in China, Ballmer said the company is careful to do no more than the law there requires.

M

icrosoft chief Steve Ballmer proclaimed an everlasting “Windows Era” as the software giant’s board easily won reelection at an annual meeting of shareholders. Ballmer along with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Netflix

co-founder Reed Hastings and six others saw their positions on the Microsoft board secured with more than 92 per cent of votes cast by investors.

While the types of computing devices people use evolves so does Windows, he said regarding the operating software at the heart of Microsoft’s empire.

In response to a question from a stockholder, Ballmer downplayed the notion of

“We are in the Windows Era,” Ballmer said. “We were, we are, and we always will be.”

“One of the remarkable things about Windows over the years is that is has adapted,” Ballmer said.

Why people fail in online dating game despite flattering pics

Microsoft is part of a Global Network Initiative founded to promote global norms when it comes to online privacy and human rights, he noted. “At every country in the world, I think you are looking at a suite of products and services that have enabled people to express views more widely than ever before,” Ballmer said.

Cash or card? Now, app to shoppers’ aid Ready to ditch your wallet, cash and credit cards? A mobile payment app lets users make purchases with their smartphone without taking the device out of their pocket or purse. Developed by electronic payment startup Square, the app called Card Case allows customers to pay for products and services at local merchants automatically by simply providing their name to complete the transaction.

Ugly people are not successful when it comes to online dating, even after they disguise their worst features and post the most flattering photos, a new study has suggested. The study by Villanova University in Philadelphia, revealed that good-looking men were able to convey their confidence and attractiveness in their written selfdescription - and that women volunteers were able to identify their beauty without being shown the lonely heart’s accompanying photograph, the Daily Mail reported. For the study, 50 female students were asked to examine profiles of 100 men, aged 22-25 years who had posted on a popular dating website. The men were divided into four sets of 25

with each of the female rating one subset of 25 photos and a different subset of 25 profile texts. This procedure made it impossible for a target man’s photo to influence his text ratings, and vice versa. For the photos, participants were asked how physically attractive they found the man (overall), and how attractive they found him for a date, a short-term sexual encounter, and long-term committed relationship. For the profile texts, participants were asked how attractive the man seemed for the above-mentioned categories. They were also asked to rate each candidate on how kind, confident, intelligent, funny or humorous he seemed from his profile.

“You walk in, say your name, and walk out. It’s a seamless payment experience ,” said Megan Quinn, director of products for Square. The app automatically opens a tab when it detects that a customer is within 100 meters of a business, as long as they’ve enabled the functionality in the app and approved the business. The user’s arrival, along with their name and photo, is announced on the merchant’s app giving them the ability to charge products and services to the customer’s credit card. “You can pay without ever reaching for your purse, taking out your wallet, or even your phone,” said Quinn. “It requires no new or unusual customer behaviour - you don’t have to wave your phone, or preload money.” By giving the merchant access to customers’ names up front, and removing the transactional aspect, the company hopes to provide a personal touch, helping customers feel like regulars even at unexplored shops. “We’ve removed the mechanics of the transaction and brought it back to the relationship and conversation between the merchant and their customer,” Quinn explained, adding customers tend to return to places where they feel comfortable.

ith the finale of “Kaun Banega Crorepati 5” being aired next week, Amitabh Bachchan says it is hard to say goodbye to the popular game show. “The recording for the finale for KBC took place today (Thursday) and it took an entire day to do so. It has been an exceptional season this year and when one leaves such environs there is bound to be a deep feeling of not wanting to depart. All the little little things that made up these extraordinary days on set was of a very distinguished quality,” Big B posted on his blog Bigb.bigadda. com.

The last episode of season five, which started Aug 15, will be aired Nov 17. “A routine had been set, people worked to maintain a sense of togetherness in all these days. And today one had to say our ‘bye byes’. Tough when you have to do this, but I guess you must bury the old so that the new prosper. The new will indeed take over, and should. But in a most deserving and disciplined manner,” he added. The 69-year-old had made his small screen debut with “Kaun Banega Crorepati” way back in 2000. And since then, the megastar has hosted four out of five seasons. The third edition was hosted by Shah Rukh Khan . The first three seasons were aired on STAR Plus, but from the fourth season it was telecast on Sony with Amitabh as the host. With the underlying belieft that ‘Koi insaan chhota nahi hota’, this season saw people from India’s interiors participating. Of them, Sushil Kumar won Rs.5 crore and Anil Sinha Rs.1 crore but there were many others who won large sums of money, fulfilling their lifelong dreams. Thanks to all this and Amitabh’s mass connect, the show managed to generate the highest rating of a non-fiction show by registering 7.2 TVR (television rating) and 8 TVR for two episodes when ‘aam admi’ Sushil Kumar won the Rs.5 crore jackpot. It was telecast in two parts and reached out to 25 million people on Nov 1 and 27 million people Nov 2 respectively.

lcohol has been used medicinally throughout recorded history; its medicinal properties are mentioned 191 times in the Old and New Testaments. As early as the turn of the century there was evidence that moderate consumption of alcohol was associated with a decrease in the risk of heart attack. And the evidence of health benefits of moderate consumption has continued to grow over time. Reviews of research evidence report a strong, consistent relationship between moderate alcohol consumption and reduction in cardiovascular disease in general and coronary artery disease in particular.4On the basis of its extensive review of research, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) reported that moderate drinkers have the greatest longevity. It also found that moderate drinking is beneficial to heart health, resulting in a sharp decrease in heart disease risk (40%60%). This is important because cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, and heart disease kills about one million Americans each and every year. The health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption have long been known. One of the earliest scientific studies on the subject was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1904. The Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism wrote that “Numerous well-designed studies have concluded that moderate drinking is associated with improved cardiovascular health,” and the Nutrition Committee of the American Heart Association reported that “The lowest mortality occurs in those who consume one or two drinks per day.” A World Health Organization Technical Committee on Cardiovascular Disease asserted that the relationship between moderate alcohol consumption and reduced death from heart disease could no longer be doubted.8 But the benefits are not limited, important as they are, to reductions in heart disease. www.indian-times.com.au

Salim - Sulaiman

They say that one just can’t change destiny, what has to happen will happen. We are referring to the music director duo Salim-Sulaiman, who has now returned back to composing music for Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine. Readers maybe aware of the fact that this duo was earlier signed on to do Heroine, but things didn’t move further as the production house had earlier refused to pay them additional royalty as per their demand.

(CEO-UTV Motion Pictures) said that it is really great to be working with SalimSulaiman again, post their successful association in Fashion. Meanwhile, Salim also added that they had done some preliminary compositions when Aishwarya was on board, but now they are waiting for Madhur to narrate them the fresh script and that they will start work on the film’s music post that.

The issue has now been settled, something that was confirmed by Salim, who said that they have now reached an amicable solution and that they are definitely doing music of the film now. On the other hand, Siddharth Roy Kapoor

Meanwhile, it has been reported that a song which was recorded by Lata Mangeshkar and was supposed to be used in Madhur’s Corporate will now be used in Heroine.Looks like sunny days are here again for Madhur Bhandarkar and his Heroine.

Esha Gupta

W

ho doesn’t want to be rich and famous? Who doesn’t like to be in the spotlight? Who doesn’t want to be known globally? Well, Esha Gupta is all of that, but with a difference. She is someone who is all set to achieve all of the above... but all on her own merits. She has really worked her way hard, harder, hardest to reach the position that she is in and will be in the years to come. After having made her presence felt as the hottest model, courtesy, the prestigious Kingfisher calendar, she is now all set to make a splash in Bollywood with her debut film Jannat 2, which stars Emraan Hashmi and Randeep Hooda. Satish Sundaresan of Bollywood Hungama caught up with this hottie par excellence for an exclusive interview. Here are the excerpts: Esha, instead of wasting time beating around the bush, let me hit the nail on its head by asking you a straight question that... are you the reason for the sun to suffer from an inferiority complex? (Laughs) Oh My God! It’s such a huge compliment! I do wish that looking at me, the sun should get an inferiority complex! By the way, do you feel that I am that hot?

November 2011 Edition

Coming back to business... How did modelling happen in the first place? I was preparing myself to do my education in mass communication, journalism and law. That’s when my mother told me to fill in the entry for the Miss India competition. Honestly speaking, I wasn’t confident of being selected at all! As luck would have it, I got selected and as they say...there was no looking back after that. What’s your parental background? My dad comes from Air Force (Wing Commander). We didn’t travel much though, but we had a fun life. I always looked and still look upto him for anything and everything. My mother’s runs an organization that works for the underprivileged. And my sister is a designer. Esha, you seemed to have made it in Bollywood without a proverbial Godfather, something that’s considered a ‘pre-requisite’. Do you consider yourself plain, simple lucky? I am one of those who think that success is 50 % hard work and talent and the rest 50% is pure luck. I took my own sweet time to reach the place where I am today. I don’t have the proverbial Godfathers and Godmothers... Luckily, I have had good people who have guided and guarded me to reach this place! As you rightly said, in a way, I feel that I was plain, simple lucky to have not met any ‘such’ kind of people!

Through the practise of Meditation, we can train our minds to achieve a state of tranquillity, without being disturbed by outside forces. Mindfulness Meditation helps in training and developing the strengths of the mind to achieve this peacefulness. One can practise Mindfulness Meditation by sitting in an appropriate upright position, crosslegged, and focussing on our breath or anything else, such as mental and physical processes which help us in becoming aware of our present thought patterns and inner state. The practice of Mindfulness Meditation focuses our attention on

our thoughts, actions, and present moments non-judgmentally. It does not encourage evaluating or thinking on our past actions and neither does it take our thoughts to the uncertain future. Mindfulness Meditation helps and trains our mind from getting distracted by outside disturbances and enables us to focus our thoughts and relax the mind. Mindfulness Meditation can be conducted or practised through informal and formal techniques. While formal Mindfulness Meditation involves Yoga, in which there is a control and awareness of breathing patterns with appropriate body movements, informal Mindfulness Meditation includes taking into account each experience in life with relish and enjoyment. Clash of Rana’s Department and Bipasha’s Jodi Breakers?

films deciding to pitch their offerings against each other. The films in question are Jodi Breakers and Department.

Bipasha Basu & Rana Daggubati

T

alk in the industry circles is that Bipasha Basu and Rana Daggubati have started treating each other as ‘more than just friends’. However, for the love birds there may be a shocker

round the corner. There are very strong indications that regardless of their personal equation with each other, there may be a professional setback for Bipasha and Rana, what with the makers of their

“It is unfortunate but true. Rana and Bipasha are headed for a clash and they can’t be expected to like it even one bit, considering the fact that it was early this year they were paired opposite each other in Dum Maaro Dum. Neither Bipasha nor Rana had any release in the interim period and they would have preferred a solo arrival for themselves. However, call it ironic that they would now have competition from each other, says an industry source. Jodi Breakers, which was earlier titled Shaadi Fast Forward, is a fun entertainer

and features Madhavan as the lead protagonist with Dipannita Sharma and Mrinalini Sharma as the other girls. On the other hand, Department is primarily an all-men saga with Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt towering the cast. However, Rana is said to be the most integral part of the film. “As of now, none of the two films can be expected to budge from their stand, says an insider, “Madhavan’s Tanu Weds Manu had released on 25th February last year and was a huge hit, hence turning out to be his biggest money spinner ever. He wants to replicate the success by arriving exactly a year later on 24th February. On the other hand, Department is the biggest and the

costliest film of Ram Gopal Varma since Sarkar Raj (2008). He is all set for a huge comeback with this multi starrer and is sure about bringing Department around the same time. Guess for both Bipasha and Rana, there is no other choice but to have the respective filmmakers fight it out as they can’t dictate terms themselves. Though it isn’t expected to impact their personal equation, professionally it would be heart breaking for sure. When contacted, Ram Gopal Varma confirmed plans for Department. “Yes, we are bringing it in February end. In fact we also begin the promotion of Department towards end of November, he said.

A couple of years back when Madhavan was shooting for 3 Idiots, the actor hurt his knee in a freak accident. The injury was then thought to be resolved with rest and proper treatment. However, Madhavan, who is currently shooting for his Tamil film Vettai, had an accident injuring the same knee yet again. The scene involved Madhavan shooting for a rain sequence when he slipped and fell, injuring his already hurt knee. Though the actor is currently undergoing physiotherapy, he will be heading to Australia for treatment and may even have to undergo surgery if required. We wish Maddy a speedy recovery.

alaika Arora’s item song for Housefull 2 with the primary male cast has four generations of actors drooling over Malaika’s dancer-avatar ‘Anarkali’ from Mithun to Boman to Akshay to Riteish. From ‘Munni’ to ‘Anarkali’, the stunning Malaika Arora is all set for a complete makeover as an item girl. Satiated and quite done with being labelled ‘Munni’ in a raunchy rustic bar in Dabangg’s celebrated item song, Malaika has gotten together with her ‘Munni Badnaam’ choreographer Farah Khan to reinvent herself as a diva-like dancer in a strip club in London for an item song in Housefull 2 that will be shot from October 27. The number ‘Anarkali’ sung

by Mamta Sharma who sang ‘Munni’, will find Malaika completely revamping her image. Says the source, “It’s not just Malaika who goes from the raunchy ‘Munni’ to a sophisticated and sensual ‘Anarkali’ in Housefull 2. It’s also the singer Mamta Sharma who is looking for a change of image with the help of Dabangg composers Sajid-Wajid who incidentally were at loggerheads with Lalit Pandit who had composed ‘Munni Badnaam’. SajidWajid were understandably miffed about the intrusion. So the ‘Anarkali’ item song in Housefull 2 is actually about a whole bunch of people with a back-projection of challenges. Malaika has to get away from the ‘Munni’ image. And Sajid-

Rishi Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty, Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Riteish Deshmukh and Boman Irani will be joining Malaika on the dance floor. They’ve all been given signature steps to perform. Says the source, “Farah has devised signature steps for every actor. She wants all the actors to look comfortable and graceful with Malaika. Is it a challenge? Handling six actors is a cakewalk for her after the entire industry had danced through her item number in Om Shanti Om.”

Sholay to re-release in 3D in 2012 I

Frank Foster, Senior Director and Chief Operating Offi cer, Maya Digital Studios, is helming the project and has been in India for over a year overseeing the movie’s conversion. “The democratisation of visual effects means that India has become the go-to destination for all kinds of post-production work,” he said. Foster, who founded and worked with Sony Pictures Imageworks, fi rst met Mehta during the fi lming of the latter’s Maya Memsaab, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepa Sahi, over 16 years ago. At that time, Foster recalls, there was no special effects-focussed company in the country. “Only a few ad fi lms used effects to a certain extent. But the scope now is immense. Filmmakers like Steven Spielberg are looking at India to develop special effects,” he said. Last year, he came

to Mumbai to take over the working of Maya Digital. “I don’t care much for the monsoons and traffi c of Mumbai but I came here because I truly believe that in the next fi ve years this city will become the main hub of postproduction in the world,” he said. Ta l k i n g about Sholay 3D, Foster says that the entire fi lm was a challenge for him and his team. “After getting the requisite permission from the Sippys, we realised what a task it was. When you convert a movie from 2D to 3D, the source material is the most important thing. Recreating a 35 year old movie that is not colour-corrected was a defi nite challenge,” Foster said. He also said that the fi lm being over three hours long means that this is one of the biggest fi lms to be converted in the world to

3D. “A normal Hollywood fi lm contains about 2000 shots but Sholay has almost 5000 shots. We have worked hard on each of those 5000-odd shots by identifying objects in these shots that need to be colour-

Ramesh Sippy and calls him India’s Orson Welles. “His movies are obviously inspired by Clint Eastwood’s Westerners. For him, Sholay was as much a labour of torture as it was a labour of love. magine Gabbar Singh from Sholay cutting Thakur’s hands saying, “Yeh haath mujhe de de Thakur” and the sword jabbing near your eyes. Maya Digital Studios, producerdirector Ketan Mehta’s hightech effects studio, is now slated to bring the acclaimed movie directed by Ramesh Sippy to theatres in 3D format early next year.

corrected and enhanced for better visual appeal. There were between 100 to 2000 objects in each shot for the team to work on. It was quite tough,” Foster recalled. The visual effects supervisor, however, is all praises for

For the 3D version, Foster said that his team has developed a proprietar y conversion software on which almost 90 per cent of the fi lm has been worked. The team also used Rotoscopy, a technique in which animators create a new trajectory over live action fi lm frame by frame to a great extent. Essentially, this means positioning 40 to 50 dancers used in a Holi sequence in a way that the 3D effect blends in with the shot. To do this, each

dancer and his/ her movements have to be digitally-enhanced so that the transition to 3D looks smooth. Foster said that most of the 3D will be used in the action sequences. One computergenerated shot has also been introduced in the fi lm. Early in the fi lm, during the train sequence when both Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan are battling bandits, Dharmendra’s character Veeru throws a few coal chunks over barrels of oil that explode instantaneously. “In the CG shot, we have given the explosion red colour instead of the original black because Sholay in English means embers and we wanted to show that,” Foster said. According to him, many fi lms can be remade for the younger audience but not Sholay. The memorable dialogues, unforgettable characters and the thrill of watching the now-deceased Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh are as relevant today as they were 35 years ago, he said. Disney recently released Lion King in 3D to favourable responses this year. If the 3D version of Sholay succeeds at the box-offi ce, a whole new market is set to open for fi lmmakers next year.

Wax statue biggest honour – Kareena Kapoor

B

ollywood actress Kareena Kapoor, who has been immortalised in wax at Madame Tussaud’s, says it is an honour to be in the league of Indian luminaries like Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan and Sachin Tendulkar. “I think being waxed at Madame Tussaud’s is one of the biggest honours I have ever received. In my whole career, I think to be given this particular honour is very rare,” said Kareena. The 31-year-old, who made her debut with “Refugee” in 2000, gives credit to her fans. “It is obviously because of you guys and all my fans who have made it possible and made my dream come true,” she said.

November 2011 Edition

Kareena’s wax statue, which cost 150,000 pounds, was unveiled at the musuem in Blackpool Oct 27, a day after the release of her latest film “RA.One”. “I never really thought that I would be waxed or that my statue would stand besides that of famous personalities in museum. Whether it is Mr. Bachchan, or Shah Rukh or Sachin Tendulkar…. really never thought I would be standing next to them. But thank you guys for making my dream possible,” she said. Currently, the actress has her kitty full with projects like “Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu”, “Agent Vinod”, Reema Kagti’s untitled project and Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Heroine”.

R

emember Sushmita Sen as the sexy and stylish college professor in “Main Hoon Na”? Now Chitrangada Singh is set to recreate the same magic as a uber chic economics professor in “Desi Boyz”. Chitrangada’s character required her to look edgy, smart, stylish and yet mature. So her stylist went with fringes for her hairdo. According to a source, a renowned stylist from London was approached to design her get-up for the film.

The look turned out to be so classic that when Chitrangada met an Indian lady, who teaches mathematics at London’s Trinity College, she came and asked the actress if she was really playing a university professor in the film. “The professor told Chitrangada – ‘Well, we look nothing like you, so can I get a picture with you’,” said a source. “Desi Boyz”, which also features Deepika Padukone, Akshay Kumar and John Abraham, releases Nov 25. www.indian-times.com.au

Kristen Stewart offered female lead in “Akira”

I

f I had to make a bet, I’d put money down that the liveaction remake of the anime classic “Akira” will never reach theaters. Too many chefs have been jamming into the kitchen for years trying to improve on a perfect dish. Why bother? But if it happens – and I say that’s a mighty big “if” – it might have “Twilight” starlet Kristen Stewart in the female lead. Twitch reports that Stewart, who’s still busy filming “Snow White and the Huntsman” with Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth, would play Kei, love interest of Kaneda, in Jaume Collet-Sera’s planned remake.

The site, which appears to have a source buried deep in the production, also says Gary Oldman, Helena Bonham Carter and Garrett Hedlund have been offered parts in the film, currently set up at Warner Brothers.

The actress has said time and again in interviews that she’s anxious to find a new, fresh franchise after playing Bella Swan for years. Yet as Twitch points out, few in the “Twilight” love triangle have been able to find a project that comes close to the mass appeal of Stephenie Meyer’s series.

It is believed that their prenuptial agreement will make it so that there will be no battle in the divorce. What do you think both stars will do next?

One actress who is slowly but surely climbing the ladder of success is Sonakshi Sinha. Ever since the release of her first film Dabangg, there has been no looking back for this gorgeous babe. Sonakshi features on the cover of the 4th anniversary issue of FHM magazine and despite the minimal make-up she does look quite stunning. Carrying forward her illustrious lineage, Sonakshi will next be seen opposite Akshay Kumar in Shirish Kunder’s Joker. She also has Rowdy Rathore once again with Akshay, Son of Sardar with Ajay Devgn and Dabangg 2 with Salman in the pipeline. From the looks of it, this girl is certainly going places!

Sehwag’s the best, says Graeme Pollock

With the double-wicket sixa-side 12-over contest already in the bag, the southpaw just needed to bat out the last over without getting out and costing his team 15 runs. That’s just what he did as South Africa won the game. While Pollock batted for just four overs and scored just 10, he did show a glimpse of his trademark cover drive with zero footwork. Pollock was renowned to score heavily without paying too much attention to the rule book, technique and footwork. “Footwork is over-rated,” he says with quintessential dismissiveness. “Your main concern should be to get into a good position,” he adds.

Pollock is a great fan of Virender Sehwag and he says the explosive batsman is a prime example of players without a great footwork but still immensely successful. “Sehwag is in a great position to play his shots. The whole essence of batting is being in a good position and taking advantage of the bad balls.” Pollock feels there are too many modern-day batsmen who allow bad balls to go unpunished. “Everybody plays to protect their wicket, which is of course very important. But you also have to score and put the pressure back on the bowler. People are not doing that enough. Just see how many bad balls don’t get scored off in a session. We need both sorts of players in the team, one who can get a hundred in one session and the ones who can score a ton in three-four hours. But guys who do the former are the ones who help you win Tests as they help the bowlers get more time to take 20 wickets.” Virender Sehwag

Talking about Sehwag, Pollock sympathized with his plight as he lives by the sword and often dies by it. “He is the best player in the world today and certainly the most dangerous. He has got a triple hundred in a day. He

The 67-year-old narrated an incident about Hansie Cronje which explained in plenty his distaste for becoming a slave of technique. “I remember years ago the South African think tank wanted me to spend some time with the team and Hansie Cronje told me that he wanted the bowler to deliver and wanted to be back and across. I told him what stops

him from starting there. Batting is all about getting into the right position and not worrying whether you are getting in line. You just got to be balanced and transfer your weight.”

is incredible and has been largely responsible for turning Indian cricket around and set up Tests for bowlers to win. I don’t know why he is always criticised. I think he has worked out a way for him, which is very effective and successful. If he

tries to change it, he will get into trouble.” Pollock ridicules the fixation of coaches asking their young charges to put the bat behind the pad. “Why do we need to put the bat behind the pad?

Why can’t we just stand still like a baseball player and play your shots. It saves precious seconds for the batsman.” Pollock feels more and more unorthodox players are making it big in international cricket these days.

Murray vs Djokovic, Nadal vs Federer in ATP Finals Britain’s Andy Murray will face world number one Novak Djokovic in the group stages of the ATP World Tour Finals, following Tuesday’s draw in London. Murray was also drawn in the same group as Spaniard David Ferrer and Czech Tomas Berdych, who knocked him out at the quarterfinal stage of the Paris Masters last week. Djokovic has won three of this season’s four Grand Slam tournaments, including the Australian Open where he beat Murray in the final. The Serb, who went on to win

Wimbledon in the summer, has been struggling with back and shoulder injuries since his victory at the US Open in September. Djokovic was forced to withdraw from the Paris Masters last week before the quarter-finals stage, although he is hopeful of being fully fit to compete in London. In Group B French Open champion Rafael Nadal will meeet great rival Roger Federer of Switzerland, who comes into the weeklong event on the back of tournament victories in Basel

MotoGP still a distant dream for VVS Laxman’s tryst Indian riders: Mahindra Racing with Eden Gardens still going strong VVS Laxman’s love affair with Eden Gardens has been on for over a decade now. And it is still going strong. The stylish willower scripted his fifth hundred - an unbeaten 176 - in his 10th Test match at the iconic venue on Tuesday. Laxman now has amassed 1,217 runs at the ground, including Tuesday’s sublime knock in the ongoing second Test against the West Indies. His average is an astounding 110.63 which is third in the roll of players with at least 1,000 runs at a particular venue. The incomparable Don Bradman leads with a figure of 128.53 in Melbourne. Followed by fellow Australian Greg Chappell at 111.77 in Brisbane. “It is a very special ground, definitely a very very special ground. It feels great. Especially getting a hundred for India. It’s not anything different today,” he said after the day’s play.

championship and we finished a creditable third. Overall, it was a satisfying season for us. The pole position of Danny (in the last race in Valencia) was the icing on the cake,” he said. Choonia also hoped that Mahindra Racing may get a chance to race in front of its home crowd soon at the Buddh International Circuit (BIC). The MotoGP calendar is crammed with 18 races in 13 countries and Greater Noida and Abu Dhabi are seen as possible new entrants next year. Encouraged by the raving reviews of the inaugural F1 race at the trendy BIC, there is intense speculation that the International Motor Sports (IMS) may bring MotoGP, the world’s premier motorcycling championship, next year itself. “We would love to race in front of our home fans. I heard there were some reports that Dorna (the management group that runs MotoGP) were in talks with Jaypee (promoters of BIC) to have a race in India. It all depends on the promoters and the Dorna,” he said. Choonia says the first season was a learning curve for the team. “We learnt how to operate a successful team in the competitive world of MotoGP. Our technicians also got the hang of the riding skills of our two riders so as to modify the bike accordingly,” he said. Choonia said for Mahindra Racing, which was the only team in its category (125cc) to design its own chassis and engine, it will be a challenge to fi ght it out against top brands like Italian giant Aprillia, Japanese major Honda and Spain’s Derbi in the 250cc category next year. The 125cc has been replaced by 250cc from the next season. Choonia said things will become tough for the team but

it will only help them. “It will be a challenge indeed for us. We were happy to stay ahead of Honda in the 125cc but 250cc will be a different ball game. Teams like Aprillia have been in business for the last 20 years. We can’t displace them. The research and the hard work they have done for the last 20 years cannot be replaced,” he said, adding that Mahindra Racing has no immediate plans to take part in the 600cc or the premium 800cc category. Mahindra Racing doesn’t want to rush in with their new bike MGP30 and they opted out of last week’s testing in Valencia. The Valencia testing was not a part of our schedule. We don’t want to make a desperate attempt to get back on track immediately,” said Choonia. Asked about his expectations for the next season, Choonia said: “We will have to consolidate our position and move higher. I don’t want to speculate too much since this is a new category for us. We will be spending a considerable time on testing our bikes.” Choonia also said teams are emphasising on safety standards. The death of Italian MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli and British Indycar racer Dan Wheldon on the racing track last month shocked the world of motorsport. Choonia saw Simoncelli’s death in an accident at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. Choonia refused to divulge the amount the company spends on R&D but said that the research in developing a bike in MotoGP was leveraging their two-wheeler segment. “Lot of design and hard work go into making a racing bike. The development work also leverages our two-wheeler business,” he said.

Laxman is not sure what eggs him on to succeed match after match at the Eden. “But I have always enjoyed batting at the Eden Gardens. Not just batting, all the Test matches I have played here, I have really enjoyed playing here.” “It’s a great ground with a lot of history. Probably the spectators, even though they were not a lot in this Test match, make it special, the people of Kolkata make it special and it is a special ground for all of us.” Among the Indian players who played at the Eden, the one who is closest to Laxman is former captain and another stylish Hyderabadi Mohd Azharuddin, whose career ended in controversial circumstances for his alleged involvement in cricket betting. Azharuddin has also hit five centuries averaging 107.50 at this venue. Laxman, a touch artist in the Azharuddin mould, struck a chord among the spectators here with his epic 281 in the March, 2001 Test against Australia, that propelled India to a fairy-tale win from a seemingly hopeless situation. The knock has become a part of the cricketing folklore. “Whenever I come here, all of you remind me about the 2001 Test match. That Test gives a lot of inspiration to me and all the guys who were involved in that game, So it’s always a great feeling coming back to the Eden,” he said.

If Vijay Mallya’s Sahara Force India brusquely dismisses the idea of employing an Indian driver just because he owns a team, the Team Principal of the lone Indian MotoGP outfit Mahindra Racing, Mufaddal Choonia, feels he can’t see Indians riding for his team as they have a long way to go to get anywhere near world class. There is one Indian team in Formula One and there is one in MotoGP and curiously both do not have India drivers and riders in their teams. Both the team owners have a similar argument, that the Indians have a long way to go before entertaining hopes of becoming world-class competitors! Choonia said that realistically it is very diffi cult for an Indian rider to find a place in the team at the moment but hoped to see one in the near future. “Well we hope so since we are an Indian team. But realistically it is very tough. We don’t want to expose a raw Indian driver. To be very frank the difference is too huge. But I hope to see an India rider coming up in the foreseeable future,” said Choonia. Mahindras made an impressive debut with British rider Daniel Webb and German Marcel Schrotter. An unexpected pole position and a third-place finish in the constructor’s championship in their debut season have made Mahindras hungry for success as they move to a higher category next year. “It was a satisfying year. We set modest targets keeping in mind that we were making our debut against some of the heavy weights. We wanted one of our riders (Schrotter) to finish among the top-15. As a team we also wanted to stay ahead of the nonAprilia teams, especially Honda, in the constructors’

SEX IS ONE AMONG THE ESSENTIAL TRAIDS OF HEALTH ACCORDING TO AYUVEDA

TRAYA UPASTHAMBAS

Dr. C.R.S. Kumar

Traya Upastambha (Essential Triads of Health) the term in Ayurveda indicates basic support for the health. It is a combination of two words i.e. upa menaing support and stambha meaning base. According to Ayurveda, the concept of five elements that constitute our body is well known. The panchamahabhuta (five elements) prithvi (the earth element), jala (the water element), agni (the fire element), vayu (the air element) & aakash (the space element) an equilibrium between these five elements is essential for physiological functions of the body. There are basically three triads that help in the maintenance of the panchamahabhoota, namely • Bramhacharya (sayyam) • Aahar (balanced diet) • Swapna or nidra (sleep) Bramhacharya(abstinence) It refers to the state of life when any living being refrains from excessive sensuality. This state does not mean a complete sexual abstinence but to indulge in sex such away so as not to have any adverse effect on health.

Ayurveda insists on refraining oneself form sexual activities during academic years and is defined as Bramhacharya ashram. Ayurveda advocates sexual intercourse after marriage in the form of gruhastha ashram but here also excessive indulgence is prohibited as it leads to loss of physical strength, memory, lack of vitality, increases irritability and disturbs the normal physiological functions of the body by causing disequilibrium of the three doshas. Ayurveda looks upon sex not merely as fun but as one of the

purushartha chatushtaya that means procreation. Ayurveda believes in the principle of “Ati Sarvatra Varjaayet” where ati means excess in any walk of life be it food, sleep or sex. All of this emphasizes on the regulated functioning of the three triads Ahar (balanced diet) It literally means the diet that we consume daily. This Ahaar consumed is taken in the form of protein, carbohydrates, minerals etc. that are essentials for the body growth and development. In Ayurveda health does not only refer to the

physical fitness but also to the , physiological, mental & spiritual wellbeing. The food taken in is in terms of saatvik, raajasik, & taamsik bhojan. All these food categories effect the mood, sense in different ways, as the Saatvik bhojan creates a sense of cheerfulness & santosh (contentment), the Raajasik bhojan increases anger and ego whereas the Tamasic bhojan causes laziness and depression. Ayurveda also prescribes a conduct code while eating that states refrain from speaking while eating, avoid gulping down of food (to chew it properly) and the consumption of food must be according to the constitution of the consumer rather than mere taste. Swapna or Nidra (sleep) According to Ayurveda the state when the mind and body both go to rest it is said that the living body is asleep. When the mind is afflicted by taamoguna in the night, the kapha dosha increases and natural sleep is inflicted. Kapha dosha is related to growth and development of our body tissues and increases the immunity to fight against diseases. In the presence of depression, anger or

sensuality a good, calm sleep is not possible because these increase vata (raajasik guna) which has an effect opposite to that of tamoguna. Sleeping for long or sleeping beyond the night at odd hours disturbs the whole day routine and have a bad effect on health. Also lack of proper sleep gives a dull feel all day, laziness, burning sensation in eyes in eyes, headache, and body ache. Bad sleep affects the routine, timely urge to eat along with regular bowel movements. Too much TV ups depression risk

Scientists have revealed that spending too much time watching TV can increase the risk of depression, while regular exercise can give the opposite effects.

The findings revealed that those who exercised the most - 90 minutes or more each day - were 20 per cent less likely to be diagnosed with depression than those who exercised 10 minutes or less a day.

The researchers at the Harvard University found inactivity could cause a range of emotional and physical symptoms associated with the condition, whereas exercise has a positive impact boosting self-esteem, sense of control and endorphin levels.

Meanwhile women who watched three hours or more of television a day were 13 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with depression than those who hardly ever tuned in.

According to the study that surveyed nearly 50,000 women, women who regularly exercised were around 20 per cent less likely to get depression compared to those who rarely exercised. “Higher levels of physical activity were associated with lower depression risk,” the Daily Mail quoted lead author Michel Lucas as saying.

November 2011 Edition

However, Lucas added that the results don’t prove directly that watching too much television and avoiding exercise leads to depression and that there could be other variables involved. The finding has been published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

5 Things men fear about sex I

t’s not only women who deal with bedroom fears. Men too are victims. Here are some common fears that make men nervous in bed. It’s commonly believed that men are more sexually active as compared to their female partner. But very often, they too encounter several fears related to their bedroom romp, which can in turn cause doldrums in their sexual relationship. Fears related to their sexual performance, sex position, ejaculation period, a satisfying orgasm and wild acts in bed often end up killing their passion. With these fears running through their mind, men not only fail to satisfy their female partner, but are unable to enjoy the act themselves. Chandigarh-based sexologist Dr. Deepak Arora

explains, “Men always relate sex and sexuality with their egos and they never want to fail there. This is the biggest fear in them which converts to performance anxiety. This anxiety leads to a man failing to perform well in bed and if their female partner does not have the patience to bear with them, relationship goes for a toss easily.” Relationship counsellor Dr. Gitanjali Sharma adds, “Men need to understand that when it comes to sexual performance, they can’t outperform themselves. The urge for performing better each time has to come from within by raising your consciousness to higher levels. And when self satisfaction comes, there is no question of under performing. You have sex for enjoyment and not to perform, under perform or out perform. It’s a joy, sheer joy, so shed all your

TIPS FOR A SLIMMER FUTURE

Keep a food mood diar y - Write down ever ything you eat and drink for a week and how you felt before and after you ate. Soon you’ll see a pattern and identify what makes you eat when you’re not hungr y. De-stress - Emotional eating doesn’t actually reduce stress levels. Although you may experience the initial enjoyment of the food, your negative feelings don’t go away. The best way to deal with stress is to exercise. Go for a walk, swim or enjoy a yoga session. Don’t buy it - One of the best things you can do is not buy the foods you binge on. Don’t bring them into your house. If snacks aren’t available you will automatically discover something else to do to change the way you’re feeling. Plan ahead - If you know you’ve got a stressful time coming up then plan your food strategy to help you cope better. Plan what healthy meals and snacks you’re going to eat and keep all others out of sight.

inhibitions and concentrate on the act.” As most male fears revolve around satisfying the female partner, Gitanjali suggests, “Till the time your women is emotionally satisfied, you can easily satisfy her sexual needs. The more emotionally connected you are, the more enjoyable physical intimacy will be. Try and indulge in physical intimacy only when your woman is ready, as it helps creating a comfort zone where she will participate equally. And while having sex, stay calm, relaxed, indulge in foreplay and nothing will stop you from performing the desired way.” Here are some common fears that make men nervous every time they gear up for a steamy romp... Fear fright # 1: Leaving her unsatisfied The foremost fear of leaving the female partner unsatisfied has a direct correlation with a male’s organ size. While a woman thinks bigger the better, the man keeps worrying about what if he’s unable to give the desired pleasure. This fear of not giving their best somewhere triggers a feeling of being an imperfect sex partner, which may even hit a man’s ego directly. Get over it: Dr. Gitanjali Sharma explains, “The fear of not satisfying a women leads to many questions in a man’s mind. He starts thinking that will she look for that sexual satisfaction elsewhere and that thought of her being with someone else (because of his under performance) will make him more complex. This is like a vicious cycle, as the more he thinks on this subject, he gets driven by performance anxiety, thus leaving her unsatisfied most of the times. Performance in bed mainly depends on a woman’s state of mind at that time. You need to be comfortable with your woman’s body to feel a strong connection. Go slow and steady and understand your woman by awakening her sensitive parts rather than worrying about your size.” Fear fright # 2: Premature ejaculation A gratifying sex quickie is all about giving and receiving pleasure. While men make every efforts to please their female partners, they would, most of the times, remain anxious about their own climax and this fear is driven by the ejaculation period. It’s a very common apprehension that men come across where they suffer premature ejaculation due to which they end up spoiling sex.

Get over it: Dr. Arora elucidates, “Medically, if a man is able to hold his ejaculation for at least one minute, he is not a patient of premature ejaculation. But unfortunately very few people know this fact and they are being misguided with fake ads and while watching porn movies, which makes them think that they are unable to have sex for a longer period. This creates a feeling of insecurity about their female partner and the sexual stress mounts, which gets converted into performance anxiety. In most of the cases, the problem practically doesn’t exist, but the fear is creating it.” Fear fright # 3: Not getting her pregnant Though it’s not necessary that every sex session should be aimed at getting the woman pregnant, but still men do carry impotency fears in their minds. The continuous worry of not getting a woman pregnant puts men in a serious stigma, which adversely affects their sexual performance. Get over it: Dr. Arora says, “Having a child is related with both male and female health and destiny too. There are numerous cases where medically everything is normal, but the female is unable to conceive. You should try to have a healthy life style, a proper diet and a positive attitude about yourself. If there is any problem with your semen, it can be treated, so no point worrying about it. The first need is a good sex life, not having a child.” Fear fright # 4: Lacking porn value It’s a normal practice that men watch porn to learn

certain sexual acts and then repeat them with their partner. In an attempt to try something new and opt for wild acts, men repeatedly indulge in bringing out the porn elements in their sex life. And many a times, if the female partner is not responding positively, men start feeling that they are lacking somewhere. Get over it: Dr. Gitanjali says, “Men often compare their sexual performance with porn scenes or with that of their female partner and the fear that they might be less experienced makes them panic. Men should understand that performing in bed has nothing to do with any experience. It’s the mental connection with the female partner which can exist even without taking any inspiration from the porn acts.” Fear fright # 5: Masturbation done in the past Several studies have claimed that masturbation done during one’s childhood or adolescent years doesn’t impact a person’s sex life in his later years. Yet there exists numerous fears attached to the same. Men often blame their masturbation habits for their weak bedroom performance and with this illogical apprehension; they fail to focus on their present sexual acts. Get over it: Dr. Arora advices, “Masturbation doesn’t harm much, but the guilt of masturbating is more harmful, and this is just due to lack of sex education. Every healthy male masturbates many times in his life in various stages of age, there is nothing to worry about.”

Worms in Children >>

Raj Kothuru

WORMS IN CHILDREN: Worms are one of the most common childhood conditions. While there are many types of worms that can infect adults and children around the world, such as Ringworm, Hookworm, Whipworm, Tapeworm, Roundworm etc the most likely culprit in children in Australia is the threadworm (Enterobius vermicularis). Most families with young children have had to deal with worms from time to time. Although parents are often embarrassed if their children have worms, they are very common and usually not difficult to treat. Just to know briefly about the type of worms: Threadworm is also called Pinworm. Ringworm is not a parasitic infection at all but a persistent fungal infection. Hookworms and Whipworms are quite rare in Australia. Tapeworm occurs in Australia, particularly in sheep farming areas. Roundworms while rare in Australia, are the most common parasitic infection in the world.

and inflammation of the bowel may occur. If you look carefully at the child’s bottom, around the opening (anus), you can sometimes see the worms there, especially when the child is asleep at night or first thing in the morning. REINFESTATION: WHAT ARE THREADWORMS? These are shiny-white, tiny worms that grow to 2 cm long and live in the small and large intestine. About one month after the egg of the threadworm is swallowed, the adult worm comes out of the child’s bottom (anus) and lays her eggs on the skin around the opening or creases of the rectum causing irritation, very bad itching of the anus and occasional intestinal/ abdominal discomfort. They exist in clusters or appear as rolled up bundles and are distinguished by their white, thread-like appearance. They also move very quickly. The eggs can also be moved onto clothing, bedding, and other surfaces, where other people can pick them up. The eggs can survive up to 2 weeks

on surfaces. Adult worms can live for up to 6 weeks, but people can be re-infested even while they have worms if they swallow more of the eggs. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS TO WATCH OUT FOR IN CHILDREN: Itchy bottom. Reduced appetite Slightly uncomfortable. Red rash around the anal region (due to scratching) sometimes, leading to infection Abscess (boils) around the anus Occasionally adult seen in child’s poo.

forming worms

Nausea, diarrhoea, disturbed sleep and foul breath In severe cases appendicitis

A vicious cycle of reinfestation can occur if your child scratches their anus then puts their fingers in their mouth or they come into contact with an infected child who has not washed their hands. Threadworms are most likely to be spread to and by children who don’t wash their hands thoroughly, because of their tendency to put their fingers in their mouths after scratching other body parts. Prevent re-infection by teaching and practicing good hygiene such as keeping finger nails short, daily bathing, washing all sheets and controlling scratching. HOMEOPATHIC HELP: Homeopathy can be your child’s best friend in case of worm infestation (just as in any other ailment).

In most cases, your child’s constitutional medicine is best preventative and corrective treatment for children with worms. Remedy and dosage is completely unique to the child and incorporates a preventative regime within itself. As an example of how precise Homeopathy can be: Cina is a remedy that may be prescribed when : the wormy child is cross, irritable, has a sickly pale face with rings about the eyes, grates the teeth at night and has a tendency to convulsions has canine hunger or variable appetite; picks at its nose and cries out in its sleep; there is jerking of the hands and feet, a milky urine and a bluish color about the mouth. Always consult a health care professional before taking any medication. You may ask your personal query to Raj Kothuru (Homeopath) via email drraj@ aurahealth.com.au or phone 0425 761 826 / (03) 9077 5044 regarding any of your health problems. Although the obesity prevention came at the significant cost of widespread inflammation, the research offers new clues about the connections among obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, and inflammation. “Turning on this molecule has a very dramatic impact on lipid metabolism,” said Haiyan Xu, assistant professor of medicine (research) in the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and a researcher at Rhode Island Hospital’s Hallett Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology. In the study, the researchers changed the sequence of events for transgenically engineered mice by inducing inflammation via the enzyme IKKbeta in their fatty tissue before they were obese. The result for metabolism was much more positive than for control mice who were left unaltered but were fed the same diets. For both male and female mice, the ones who were altered still put on weight

but significantly more slowly. All the mice started at the same weight. After about 22 weeks on a high-fat diet, however, altered male mice weighed less than 38 grams while unaltered male mice weighed more than 45 grams. After being injected with glucose, altered mice maintained lower blood sugar levels than unaltered mice. The same was true after insulin injections, suggesting that insulin was more effective. In addition, the transgenic mice expended much more energy than their normal counterparts, suggesting that the sugar was indeed metabolised. The mechanisms by which IKKbeta in fatty tissue increases metabolic performance are not completely clear, but the researchers measured increased expression of genes associated both with fatty acid oxidation and with making mitochondria, a cell part responsible for producing energy. One possible lesson from the research seems to be that while obesity and inflammation are both promoters of insulin resistance, Xu said, obesity seems to be the worse one. The research appeared in the January 2012 issue of Endocrinology which is released early online.
