Indian times June

June About this sound (pronunciation) (help·info) is the sixth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars and one of the four months with a length of 30 days. Ovid provides two etymologies for June’s name in his poem concerning the months entitled the Fasti. The first is that the month is named after the Roman goddess Juno, wife of Jupiter and equivalent to the Greek goddess Hera, whilst the second is that the name comes from the Latin word iuniores, meaning “younger ones,” as opposed to maiores (“elders”) for which the preceding month May is named (Fasti VI.1–88). See: Months in various calendars also called the season of the unicorn. At the start of June, the sun rises in the constellation of Taurus; at the end of June, the sun rises in the constellation of Gemini. However, due to the precession of the equinoxes, June begins with the sun in the astrological sign of Gemini, and ends with the sun in the astrological sign of Cancer. June is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest daylight hours of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. June in the Northern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent to December in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa.

Interpol says al Qaeda remains biggest global threat A

l Qaeda and groups linked to it remain the world’s biggest security threat despite the killing of Osama bin Laden, the head of Interpol said on Tuesday. Airlines and other forms of public transport are most at risk, with terrorists using fraudulent passports to travel undetected an area of particu lar concern, Interpol secretary general Ronald Noble told reporters on the sidelines of an aviation meeting in Singapore. “Even before bin Laden was captured and killed, the biggest threat was not only al Qaeda but al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist groups around the world,” he said “I think that remains the biggest threat now as it was before his death. “The airline and air industry continues to be a prime target for terrorists, but we’ve seen from recovered intelligence etc that they are also focusing a lot on mass transit. But airlines continue to be a special target.” A major worry, he said, was the use of stolen or missing passports and the fact that many countries did not match passports of passengers to a database of missing documents. “One out of every two international air arrivals is not being

screened. That’s almost half a billion each year not being screened,” Noble said. “We know if terrorists can move from country to country without being detected, that’s a risk to all countries, and from Interpol’s perspective that is a number one risk affecting all countries throughout the world.” He said security agencies screened 490 million passports in 2010 and identified 40,000 of them as being listed as stolen or missing. Interpol’s database, he said, contained details of 16 million missing passports and 12 million missing national identity papers. “Each country should focus on those individuals they know the least about, which tend to be nonnationals,” Noble said. “So the focus of each country should be get as much information as possible about non-nationals when they come to their countries so they can decide whether or not to issue a visa. And they do that by checking identity documents and sharing information through their intelligence services, through their police and through Interpol worldwide.”

“Do not think that the case is over?” al-Wahishi warned. “What is coming is even worse. What awaits you is more intense and more damaging. You will bite your fingers and regret the days of Sheikh Osama bin Laden,” he said, according to the message translated by the U.S. Center for Monitoring Islamic Websites.”

Further drop in foreign students to Oz

A

ustralian education industry has witnessed an 8.7% drop in international enrolments, with the number of oversees students, particularly Indians, reporting a sharp fall. The hardest hit enrolments were recorded in the vocational education and English language areas, where

numbers fell more than 21% on March last year, The Age reported. The report said the biggest challenge for the sector is the Indian market where the numbers all sectors fell by 30.4%, continuing the year’s trend, outlined in figures released in April for February enrolments.

Apart from attributing the drop to ‘safety issues of Indian students’, many education experts have also blamed Australian government for tightening immigration laws that were leading to the drop in student enrolments.

Hyperbole rules Cong-BJP war

S

eizing the opportunity to corner the government after the midnight action against Baba Ramdev kicked up controversy, the BJP went ballistic on Monday, likening the police action to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the Emergency. The comparison is inappropriate, but the party believes it suits its. Top leaders sat on a ‘satyagraha’ at Rajghat through the day. They also met the President to condemn the government and demand a special session of Parliament. The imagery was ideologically crucial for the BJP. The Emergency is vital for the party as it gave the Jana Sangh its first entry into the politics of civil liberties beyond its staple - and rather limiting - Hindu cultural politics. The symbolic imagery of Mahatma Gandhi’s satyagraha is similarly an attempt - tried repeatedly from 1980, with the party’s foundation - to move beyond the charge that the BJP’s ideological mentor RSS stayed away from the freedom struggle and was even accused of the

Mahatma’s assassination. At the same time, the defence of a sadhu - the BJP likened Ramdev to Swami Vivekananda - serves the Hindutva ideological project too. “Never since those fateful days of June 1975 has the country witnessed such a brutal attack on civil liberties and democratic rights...as it did just past midnight on June 4-5 this year....” said the memorandum to the President signed by LK Advani, Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley. “The barbaric attack...by the Delhi Police on the instructions of the government is truly reminiscent of General Dyer’s psychopathic action against freedom fighters in Jallianwala Bagh....” The memorandum also demanded a special session of Parliament “to 1. compel the government to explain its brutal action against peaceful protesters and apologise for this attack... 2. bring…a resolution declaring all Indian money stashed away in foreign banks as ‘National Wealth’.” After meeting the President, Advani said the government should introduce a legislation to empower enforcement authorities to take “severe penal action against those who have indulged in such criminal pilferage of national resources”. At Rajghat, impassioned speeches alternating with patriotic and inspirational songs and dances condemned the atrocities, in which even Swaraj took part. When Congress condemned the dance at the Mahatma’s samadhi by Swaraj, the BJP reacted sternly. “If on activists’ request Bharat Mata kee jai was sung, do they call it dancing here? What do we expect of Congressmen who sweep the floor at 10 Janpath?” said chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad.

he mango may be Katrina Kaif’s chosen fruit for endorsement, but we’ve heard the actress won’t have anything to do with tomatoes, even if it means an endorsement deal worth millions. India has half-a-dozen Osama bin Ladens’

S

everal terrorists charged by India with mass killings on its soil have been living in Pakistan, an eminent American think tank has said, noting that the US has not yet made it a priority to hold Islamabad to account for the infiltration of militants across the border. Indians have been watching the Pakistani army send “armed young men with groups like Lashkar-e-Tayyeba across that border with impunity for years, and the United States has not made it a priority of holding Pakistan to account for the rates of infiltration,” Steve Coll, President and CEO of New America Foundation, a Washington-based think tank, said at a Congressional hearing. “It would be unreasonable to say you should have zero infiltrations into complex territory, big mountains, but the rates of infiltration that Pakistan has allowed suggest state policy,” he told lawmakers. It is important for Americans to understand that the ambiguity in the nature of the haven that Osama bin Laden found in Pakistan is not, by itself, unusual in the country, Coll said. “From India’s perspective, there are five or six listed terrorists living around the country (Pakistan) in similar circumstances.

June 2011 Edition

Sometimes they’re judged to be under house arrest. Sometimes they’re notional fugitives. Sometimes they really are difficult to find,” he said on Friday. Many of these people have either admitted to or been credibly charged with mass killings on Indian soil, Coll said, responding to questions of US lawmakers. “So these patterns look outrageous to the United States when the personality is someone like Osama bin Laden. But in the context of the way Pakistan has evolved in the last 10 years, his (bin Laden) circumstances were not, by themselves, unusual,” he said.

Lagarde get India’s support for IMF top job ? N

EW DELHI: TFrench finance minister Christine Lagarde will begin her India trip on Tuesday and meet finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and other top officials to court New Delhi’s support for the top job at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Lagarde is the front runner for the IMF job as she has the support from developed countries. The post fell vacant as former IMF chief Domique Strauss–Kahn resigned after charges of alleged sexual assault on a hotel maid in New York. The French finance minister begins her India trip against the backdrop of strong opposition from emerging countries led by the so-called BRICS nations, which have criticized moves to keep the job with a European nation China, India, Brazil, Russia and South Africa in a statement last month had said the convention that the selection of the managing director is made, in practice, on the basis of nationality undermines the legitimacy of the fund.

policies given their growing economic clout. But the move has met with opposition from developed countries. Emerging countries have not named a candidate for the IMF job yet. The name of deputy chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia had emerged initially but he was ruled out for the job as he has crossed the age limit, which has been set at 65 years. While it looks to be a relatively easy ride for Lagarde to the top job at the IMF, there is a churn about whether there should be an Asian as the deputy. This, sources said, might be to accommodate a growing opinion that with a surging Asia, there should be an Asian at the top. The names doing the rounds are of Korn Chatikavanij, finance minister of Thailand, Singapore deputy prime minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam and former Turkish economy minister Kemal Dervis. The country which might clinch the deal is China. Zhu Min, former

Christine Lagarde is the front runner for the IMF job as she has the support from developed countries.

They said the recent financial crisis which erupted in developed countries, underscored the urgency of reforming international financial institutions to reflect the growing role of developing countries in the world economy. The statement had also said the next managing director of the Fund should not only be a strongly qualified person, with solid technical background and political acumen, but also a person who is committed to continuing the process of change and reform of the institution to adapt it to the new realities of the world economy. Mexican central bank governor Agustine Carstens too is expected to enter the fray for the job and has already visited Brazil to enlist support. He is also likely to visit India on a charm offensive. But some sources familiar with developments said since India did not have a candidate of its own, it is likely to support Lagarde. And China is likely to do the same, if Beijing is able to get the second slot -- a huge jump for China in the global power stakes. After her meeting with Pranab Mukherjee, Lagarde is expected to hold a news conference on Tuesday evening.

Garg’s murder was result of immaturity: Defence lawyer

T

The lawyer of a 16-year-old boy, who has pleaded guilty to killing Indian student Nitin Garg, told a court here that the murder was a result of immaturity of his client believed to be the youngest person in Victorian state of Australia to commit the crime. At a plea hearing in the Victorian Supreme Court, Defence lawyer Marcus Dempsey told the Supreme court “At 15 and a half it seems (he) is one of the youngest people in this state to commit the offence of felony murder.” He said his client comes from a “much loved” background. The lawyer said that despite phone intercepts recording the boy boasting the killing, there was remorse and the unintentional murder was a result of his immaturity and a spontaneous attempted robbery of Nitin Garg’s mobile phone. Prosecutors have told the court that he discussed a potential alibi with his parents before his arrest. Justice Paul Coughlan described the case as “desperately sad.” He will be sentenced at a later date. “It’s a desperately sad case from everyone’s point

of view,” Justice Paul Coghlan said adding, “How a young man of this background finds himself here is just sad really.” The boy, whose identity has not been revealed, pleaded guilty to murder in April and is facing a maximum sentence of life in prison. He stabbed the 21-year-old Garg as he walked to work through a park in Yarraville in January last year. Garg’s murder sparked outrage in India.

Pooja Bedi “Absolutely absurd. Alcohol can de-stress, calm and you can be healthy when taken in moderation. We can get married, have sex, bear children, work, pay taxes vote etc at 18. But we can’t drink! They should focus on policing snd stringent punishment as deterrents for misuse of alcohol. Ban cigarettes. That will save more lives. ”

AUSTRALIAN IMMIGRATION

- A DREAM REALITY OR A MYTH.

T

he recent Announcement made few months ago by the new Immigration Minister Mr. Chris Bowen, has not only taken many prospective migrants by surprise but also has confused especially the International student community who are here to study. The current Australian Government has made it very tough for the General skilled Migration with a shorter skilled occupation list and literally making it almost impossible to achieve the points under the new points testing System that will be presumably forthcoming from 1st July 2011. International students are already confused as they are under the wrong impression that it applies for even Graduate Skilled Temporary Visa Category Subclass-485 but let me make it very clear that the new points Testing system will apply only to independent General Skilled Migration visa categories like Subclass 885 onshore, 175 Offshore and also other state sponsored and Family sponsored Visa categories. One of the biggest hurdles for any prospective migrant in the new points system would be IELTS Score as one has to score 7 bands each in all the four components in order to score 10 points. The minimum IELTS score remains the same which is 6 each in all the four components but would be getting no points for it. The Recent slump in the International student Market has further worsened the situation as no student would like to take any calculated risk in the rapidly changing immigration regulations of the system which gives no guarantee of any further stay or residency. The recent review done by the

Immigration Ministry in regards to the new points table in tandem with the Immigration Industry has not shifted its firm stand of going further and implementing it. This would be done in spite of lot of opposition from the Industry experts. Now, keep in mind that under the new points testing system anyone who wish to qualify for permanent residency will have to score 65 points which is a bit hard to achieve when comparing with the existing points testing system where one has to score 120 points which was still achievable. The Immigration Minister has announced a large cut in the intake of skilled migration for the coming year 2012 and most likely would be extended till 2015 making it one of the most Interesting Chapters in the History of Australian Immigration since the “White Australia Policy “in 70s. Now International Students community would be largely affected by the sweeping changes which are to be in effect from 1st of July 2011, but having said that the Business sector which plays a major role in the economy of the country would be affected too because of skills shortage. The Labour Government under the leadership of Ms Julia Gillard is trying to slow down the whole Immigration process of the nation in order to divert as many skilled workers or rather migrants to the regional areas of the country. As a expert immigration advisor myself, I think the only industry which would gain a lot in this rapid transition would be the regional industries who would be getting the cream of all the skills under the Governments New Enterprise Migration Plan which would give more impetus to the Regional skills shortage

and in turn encourage Regional Migration under the Forthcoming Immigration policy changes which would be taking place in the year 2012. Now, Students whose occupations are not listed in the New SOL Schedule 3 of the DIAC will have to look out for other alternate pathways such as Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS-857) or opt for 457 Long stay Business Visa which is popularly called as Work VisaThe Employer Nomination/Sponsored Visas (ENS) is being extensively promoted by the present Government in order to reach the target of Sustained Migration and Eventually Sustained Population growth. I would suggest people with less English levels to seek regional pathways which would be much easier and which would eventually get them the Residency. It is very important for International students to have a proper career plan in order to avoid any further confusion in the future but unfortunately it is a true reality. I would suggest that proper planning and right Guidance would be very vital for a flying start in their respective careers, so it is very important to seek right and genuine advice from Expert Immigration Advisor for a smooth ride in the start itself. Centre not serious about drafting effective Lokpal Bill: Anna N

ew Delhi: Veteran social activist Anna Hazare on Sunday said that the Central government is not serious about drafting an effective Lokpal Bill. Addressing the media in New Delhi, Hazare said that the civil society members of the Lokpal Bill joint committee will boycott the June 6 meeting. “After incidents of last night, it clearly shows the government’s intentions on crushing corruption. Hence, we have decided not to attend the joint meeting on Lokpal Bill tomorrow,” he said. The social activist also said that he will lead one-day fast at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on June 8 to protest police action on Ramdev’s agitation. However, Hazare said he has ‘some issues’ with the yoga guru and would not share the dais with him at Jantar Mantar. If govt does not take a lesson, a bigger agitation will be launched; there has to be second freedom struggle, Hazare said. Condemning the crackdown on yoga guru Baba Ramdev and his supporters at Delhi’s Ramlila ground, he said that the misbehaviour on the part of the government has killed the very purpose of democracy in the nation.

Social activist - Anna Hazare

Hazare insisted that Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh must answer to the people. At around 1 a.m., close to 600 policemen had arrived at Delhi’s Ramlila ground to demand that Baba Ramdev and the crowd of 60,000 supporters must disperse. Their argument was that the gathering had been granted permission only for a yoga camp and not a mass demonstration. The talks between the Central Government and Ramdev crashed last night with both sides citing betrayal. The cabinet ministers, who were making all attempts to persuade Ramdev to give up his fast said that he had promised he would end his fast last evening. A letter was produced in this regard. Ramdev, however, said the government was lying, and added that the letter had been conditional upon the government agreeing to his list of demands. Ramdev had started his indefinite ‘fast-unto-death’ stir on Saturday to demand several radical reforms in the prevailing political system, including a death penalty for corrupt officials.

NATO blasts shake Tripoli as Hague meets rebels B

enghazi: NATO on Sunday pounded Tripoli hours after Britain’s top diplomat met rebel chiefs in Libya and Russia voiced concerns the alliance’s military operation is sliding towards a land campaign. Warplanes launched intensive air raids on the Libyan capital and its eastern suburbs, where several explosions were heard, as NATO kept up its pressure on strongman Muammar Gaddafi. British Foreign Minister William Hague yesterday met leaders of rebels who have been fighting to oust Gaddafi after NATO deployed attack helicopters for the first time. “We are here today for one principal reason -- to show our support for the Libyan people and for the National Transitional Council, the legitimate representative of the Libyan people,” Hague said in a statement. Hague, accompanied by international development minister Andrew Mitchell, held talks with the head of the rebel National Transitional Council Mustafa al-Jalil. He also toured Benghazi’s landmark seafront as well as a medical centre treating war wounded. “Gaddafi should leave immediately,” Hague said. He told reporters Britain would also

support demining efforts in Misrata, the main rebel-held city in western Libya, and deliver “more equipment, uniforms, bulletproof jackets” to rebel fighters. Hours after Hague’s trip to the rebel capital, a series of NATO air strikes targeted Tripoli. Four blasts shook Tripoli at around 2:30 am (6000 IST) on Sunday after two powerful but distant explosions were felt in the centre of the capital at around 6:30 pm (1000 IST) on Saturday, followed by several others within a few minutes. Witnesses said the explosions came from Tajura, a suburb that has often been targeted by NATO since an international coalition began military operations against Libya on March 31 to stop strongman Moamer Gaddafi attacking civilians.

Britain’s defence ministry said today its Apache helicopters returned to the NATO campaign over Libya, destroying a multiple missile launcher operated by Gaddafi forces near the eastern oil hub of Brega. “At sea, HMS Ocean launched her British Army Apaches against a multiple rocket launch system positioned on the Libyan coast near Brega,” Major General Nick Pope, spokesman for the Chief of Defence Staff, said in

a statement. British Tornado strike planes separately joined other NATO aircraft in a “major strike on a large surface-to-air missile depot” in the Libyan capital Tripoli, Pope added. In its latest operational update issued, NATO said it struck a command and control node, missile storage facility and military installation in Tripoli and rocket launcher, barracks and two checkpoints near Brega. Moscow, which is calling for a negotiated solution to the conflict, expressed alarm as the NATO campaign entered a new phase. “We consider that what is going on is either consciously or unconsciously sliding towards a land operation,” Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

Baba gives UPA a sleepless summer

Amitabh names Prakash Jha ‘Khatron Ka Khiladi’ Prakash Jha is always found in midst of the action on his film set rather than sitting by the camera in his director’s chair calling out action. He is known to be one director who takes on challenging subjects with his films, seems to have taken a few during the shooting of his next film AARAKSHAN. One would always find Prakash Jha with the film camera on an edge of a bridge without support, or on a crane 50 odd ft above the ground, amidst of a chaotic crowd or under a running bulldozer to get a shot just right. Amitabh Bachchan who is working with Prakash Jha for the first time, rightly dubbed him as a “Khatron Ka Khiladi.”

Being the daredevil director, Prakash Jha escaped a few accidents during the shoot. It happened twice during shooting, while taking a shot under the bulldozer, the driver didn’t hear the command to “Stop” from the action director, almost running over Prakash Jha. Second time, he wasn’t as lucky as he rode a scooter by himself during a location shift, and met with an accident. Unfazed by the injury Prakash Jha jokingly remarked to his crew, “You’ve made me fall, but don’t think I have fallen from grace.” AARAKSHAN is slated to release on August.

B

aba Ramdev continues his fast at his Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar on Sunday night. The night-long operation that evicted Baba Ramdev from the city this morning was meant to signal the UPA’s tough resolve. But coming after days of unprecedented surrender by the UPA — which even announced its commitment to a new law hours before it sent the police in — it opened the Government to criticism from across the political spectrum. And prompted soul-searching within the party over the way ahead. For the record, though, the Congress referred to Baba as the “nothing (man),” who had been propped up by “(communal) forces” out to destabilise the government (read the BJP and the Sangh Parivar). This brave face did little to hide the unease within as the party braced for a fresh political crisis.

At a meeting of AICC officebearers and senior ministers called by party president Sonia Gandhi this evening, the government, particularly Union Minister Kapil Sibal, did come under fire from some leaders for what they saw as “mishandling” of Baba Ramdev’s fast. These leaders were learnt to have said that there was no need for four ministers to go to the airport to talk to the yoga guru. They also complained of being kept in the dark about the police action. The meeting was also attended by Pranab Mukherjee, A K Antony, P Chidambaram, and Kapil Sibal. The party was divided over the police action. Party general secretary Digvijaya Singh called him a “thug” and said: “There are certain laws and regulations in the country, you cannot allow people like Ramdev to run riot in the capital city. He was trying to incite people in the Ramlila Maidan.”

And added that the party had little to do with the police action. Hours later, the editor of party mouthpiece Congress Sandesh, Anil Shastri tweeted: “It is Manmohan Singh government’s, not a party decision. What happened last night at Ramlila Grounds was unfortunate and avoidable.” On Saturday, he had tweeted: “Indiraji or Rajivji would not have sent their ministers to airport to placate a Baba arriving in a private jet.” After the meeting at 10, Janpath, Congress media department chairman Janardan Dwivedi said that the party felt that “certain forces do not have any faith in democratic and Constitutional system of the country. Defeated in the election, they are trying to look for other means”. But he had no answer for why the government rolled out the red carpet for this “nothing” man.

Enough laws to tackle black money: Sharma

U

nion Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma on Sunday said there were enough laws to tackle black money and added that Parliament cannot take a dictation from selfappointed crusaders. Talking to The Indian Express, Sharma, who returned Sunday evening from a trip to Chennai and Bangalore, said, “There are enough laws to tackle ill gotten money — be it from money laundering, crime or drug trafficking. The government’s actions so far were only to defuse the tension.” The minister admitted that such events did result in a negative projection of India in international forums. “But, our global partners will surely see through the political agenda,” Sharma said. “India has a rule-based governance system.

June 2011 Edition

Such decisions cannot be made in the streets and chowks.” The issue of black money is complex and the government is seriously addressing it. “We have signed agreements with a large number of countries including the Bahamas, Channel Islands, Switzerland. India is also part of the international task force set up on this issue by the G-20. The government is sincere and committed to tackling the black money issue,” he said. Sharma said in his meeting with industry captains in the two cities, there was general concern about these self-appointed activists being unelected and unaccountable to any institution. “There are issues that need to be taken care of through legislation. There is a clear political agenda behind orchestrating such

events,” he said. In a press statement earlier in the evening, he claimed that developments in the recent weeks to project India as a country of scams and corruption were part of a diabolic and sinister political agenda. “The coercive attempts to hold the state to ransom and dictate to Parliament in discharge of its sovereign function have no place in democracy,” he said. According to him, Ramdev’s agitation was a coalition of a partisan political agenda and political forces rejected by democratic processes in recent elections. “Hiding behind the mask were communalist and fascist forces — Bajrang Dal, RSS and VHP which had at their heart an aim to destabilise Indian polity.”

India is ahead in its afforestation activity

ISRO’s PSLV-C16 Launch has been successful at SHAR in sriharikota

The forests in India are growing at 300,000 hectare per annum,” Eduardo Rojas-Briales, Forestry Director of Food and Agriculture Organisation told journalists yesterday. According to the ‘State of the World’s Forests’ report, published by the Food and Agricultural Organisation, five countries -- India, China, Australia, Indonesia and Myanmar - had the largest forested area in Asia and Pacific region. These countries accounted for 74 per cent of the forest in the region with China and Australia alone accounting for almost half the forest area of the region. In Asia and Pacific region, forests were lost at a rate of 0.

PSLV-C16 rocket was successfully launched today at 10.12 am and ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan says that it happened without any mishaps taking place. With this event, Resourcesat-2 satellite would greatly help India to keep an eye over its own natural resources. ‘Mausam’ shifted to September T

he mighty clash has been averted! 22 July was supposed to witness the release of two keenlyanticipated biggies -- SINGHAM and MAUSAM -- but the confrontation of raw action and romance has been avoided. While SINGHAM is confirmed for 22 July [the theatrical trailer has been attached to the prints of READY], MAUSAM has been shifted ahead, to 9 September. However, let me add, the shifting of MAUSAM to 9 September has nothing to do with an equally mighty opponent [SINGHAM]. The genuine reason is that MAUSAM director Pankaj Kapur has asked for an extra month for the post-production work of the film. In view of the fact that the film has shaped up exceptionally well, the director and also the producers of MAUSAM have decided against hurrying up and releasing their film in July. Meanwhile, the writer had the opportunity to witness the theatrical trailer of MAUSAM and was left speechless and awestruck by the impact it created. The trailer depicts the varied looks of its principal characters [Shahid Kapoor, who looks debonair and Sonam Kapoor, who looks ethereal] and also merges romance, drama and conflict beautifully in those 2 minutes. The first theatrical trailer of MAUSAM will be launched on 24 June [with DOUBLE DHAMAAL], while the second trailer will be launched on 15 July [with ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA]. MAUSAM hits the screens on 9 September.

ome June and Jacqueline Fernandez would be travelling to Europe for the shoot of Sajid Khan’s sequel to HOUSEFULL. While one can well expect that just like the first in the series, HOUSEFULL 2 too would be a laughing affair, for Jackie too it is going to be a new world altogether, especially as she would be arriving fresh after working in an erotic thriller MURDER 2. “Things have started looking good for Jackie and she is now raring to go,” says a friend of Jackie, “She started off with feel good films like ALADIN and JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI but they were more experimental in appeal with surreal elements to them. While ALADIN was based on a folk tale, JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI had her play an alien who arrived from a different world.”

bollywood music Music Review :

O

Bheja Fry 2

ur very own lovable ‘Idiot’ Bharat Bhushan (Vinay Pathak) is finally back! In listing of shockingly surprise hits, BHEJA FRY was one grand success that was noticeable as well as commendable. Its predictable sequel was one of the most anticipated moment to arrive for all those who relish comical bumpy rides. So, finally BHEJA FRY 2 arrives with extra band and bandwagon! Loaded with extra glamour (Minissha Lamba) and bunch of reliable comical talents (Suresh Menon, Kay Kay Menon), its musical section has three composers to enthrall listeners. After making promising vows in two original soundtracks of BHEJA FRY (yes, the film was not song-less), upcoming music composer Sagar Desai reappears back in the credits along with Ishq Bector and Sneha Khanwalkar as the other two composers. Packed with truckloads of hilarious jamboree and witty one-liners, one presumes its situational sounding soundtracks to be humorously fun-filled and fuelled with spunky beats that are streamlined to perfection on quick-witted chirpy lyrics. Comical entertainers have never been too high on melodic quotient, so expectations are presumably moderate from this laugh riot. Get set go...as the musical journey is about to begin! Ishq Bector’s peculiar musical strengths that are primarily noticed on Indi-pop remix albums makes waves to create humorous stir in quizzically crooned and jokingly written song titled ‘Ishq Da Keeda’. Ishq Bector along with Shree D sings out jovially this nonsensically penned track that narrates out the advent of ‘love-bug’, making its violent rashes on modestlooking simpleton Bharat Bhushan. Sonny Ravan and Shree D’s instinctively chirpy wordings works to the comical situation and are likely to be making things amusing on big screen. The noisy and crappy singing makes the ‘irritating quotient’ loud and high and so do the nonsensical lyrics in making this as prominent musical feature of the flick. Nothing great, melodious or extraordinary to describe, this soundtrack packs some really witty-one-liners that should be sufficient enough to deliver heavy dosages of laughter. Wait ‘n’ watch! The second funky offering adds ‘glamour-katadka’ in this comical potpourri with mixing of hiphop jives in streams of bhangra-beat thrives to deliver out a hip-shaking disco-beat number in ‘We go crazy’. Ishq Bector’s peppy composing is again at the helm of affairs as this time Shree D shares mike with sensuous sounding Apeksha Dandekar. For its bombastically garish appeal, it can be presumed to be ‘glamourstruck’ tempting title track that is likely to be lapped more by remix album lovers. Like the previous track,

June 2011 Edition

Kareena Kapoor: ‘Why should another actor do my song?’

its highlights are nonsensically weird one-liners that are tuned in sync with catchy rhythms and beats. BHEJA FRY 2 has humor and fun in its musical works but lacks the compassion and promise of delivering out potential chartbusters. There is a gleam of hope in soundtracks like ‘O Rahi’, ‘Ishq Ka Keeda’ and ‘We go crazy’ but the feel is thematically situational with no great shakes in singing, writing or composing. Despite the fact that the album has three promising composers, it lacks the ire and zeal of alluring listeners, a potential box-office show and shrewd marketing skills will be of great help in raising its commercial prospects. iareena Kapoor is surprised by rumours that Deepika Padukone was approached for the Akon composed Chamak challo… song in RA.One. “It’s not an item number, but is an integral part of the plot. So why should another actor have been approached for it?” she retorts. “It was always going to be picturised on me. It’s a very desi track that Ganesh Hegde has choreographed with me in a sexy Indian look, complete with a nose-ring and jhumkas (earrings).” Kareena shrugs off rumours about any rivalry with Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone. “These stories are nothing more than media hype. They make for good reading, though it is upsetting to see that people want to read such lies. News of two actors being at loggerheads is just boring.” RA.One is gearing up for a Diwali release and while actor-producer Shah Rukh Khan is upbeat about the stunts and special effects, Kareena is going gaga over her songs: “There’s another sizzling Akon number, Shake my booty… that’s groovy and western. After Golmaal last year, I’m optimistic about another Diwali dhamaka.” Before that she has an Eid release coming up, Bodyguard.

s a wine enthusiast, I quite inadvertently notice things which normally A we tend to overlook when we go to a restaurant to spend a nice evening with our friends. Let me tell you one such instance which raised

a very pertinent question in my mind and would probably do so too in your mind once I share it with you. Of late I happened to be at a restaurant with my friends. We were in a mood to have some wine. I generally tend to choose my preferred wine after a browse through the wine list but on this occasion I deliberately sought the waiter’s suggestion. This approach often brings out the sales approach of the waiters when trying to suggest wines. The waiter told me a brand name and then deliberately I asked for the wine list. I had a hunch as to where it was leading. As expected it turned out to be one of the most expensive wines on the list. Let me put forth another point, which I know will raise quite a few eyebrows but I just can’t stop sharing this and would also like to know your opinion on this. If we recollect, when we go out for a dinner we are first given the wine /beverage list and then the food menu list. And after selecting our beverage we scratch our head about which dish to take. What we are doing in the process is trying to match the food with the wine, which if you give a thought is the opposite of what it should be. One should first order the food and then depending on the tasting notes/ sommelier’s advice order a particular wine from the wine list. I think this should work better. For the benefit of all who are in the hospitality here are a few things to remember before suggesting wines. Do’s 1. Please ask the guest what he likes based on any previous experience of savoring wine. 2. See if there is any occasion for you to use your proactiveness in suggesting wines. 3. Suggestion can also be made after food is ordered. 4. Remember couple of food and wine match as per yor menu which you can suggest to guest as it will make a strong statement and save time also. 5. Your product knowledge is always a show stealer 6. Please make a wine list with inserts which you can easily replace when dirty or if any changes in it. 7. There can be nothing worse than having a long wine list with big NA list. 8. Have wine list with adequate range and in orderly manner (by region, varietals, body etc) Don’t 1. Please don’t suggest wines according to the price. 2. Don’t serve a wine that is opened for more than 3-4 days. 3. Don’t serve wine at a wrong temperature 4. Don’t serve wine with scratched or torn labels use these offerings for banquets or parties

Kavaratti: The Queen of Hill Stations, Udhagamandalam or Ooty is situated at an altitude of 2290 m above sea level. Just 105 km away from Coimbatore, it is situated in the lap of the Nilgiri ranges. The Nilgiri got its name from the blue misty haze that envelops the range. It came into possession of the East India Company from Tipu Sultan by the treaty of Srirangapatnam in 1799. However, the first European to visit the Nilgiri hills was Rev. Jacome Forico, a priest who visited the place in 1603. However, settlement in Udhagamandalam began in 1822 when John Sullvan, the Collector of Coimbatore decided to build a Stone House here. The annual Tea and Tourism Festival held in January is the occasion when tea lovers from all over the world converge. It is also a trekker’s paradise with a number of thrilling, exciting and adventurous treks with beautiful natural surroundings varying in distance, altitudes and terrain. fter ruling the small screen for long, Ekta Kapoor seems to have shifted her loyalties in favour of the big screen. Indian astrology is the oldest system of astrology in the world differs considerably from the western system and Chinese astrology. Indian astrology uses the actual constellations of stars, position of planets and Sun as seen in the sky at the time of individual’s birth. Indian ancient astrology system gives a completely different chart as compare to the one used by western astrologers.

Indian Astrology It is noble and a natural science that dates back to 3000 BC. Ancient astrology is found in the part of Atharva Veda in the form of ‘Mahopanishat’ or ‘Jyothishmati’. As per Indian astrology every event in our life is based on position of celestial bodies at time, date and place of birth. Indian Astrology also differs considerably from the Chinese horoscope, which is based on the year of birth and believes that the year of birth indicates a certain phase or aspect of sixty year circle of time. Therefore you may find yourself born in the year of dog, horse or rat or even a dragon. Hence, people who are born in a particular animal year share certain common traits just like people born in common zodiac do. Vedic astrology shows the understanding of life, the journey of the spirit from past to present life, effects of karma on present life,

doshas and remedies and many more. Indian astrology believes that it is the supreme power who is handling everything and that supreme power decides the birth time of the individual according to the past karma so that he or she can have the life in which they are best suited.

Origin of Indian Astrology Indian astrology is very ancient and regarded as the oldest system of astrology known to mankind. As per the estimates from Puranic Time and the Archaeological Record, the Indian ancient astrology has the age of about 5000 BC. History of Astrology has its root in the Vedas of Hindu that are the oldest scriptures in the world. The Vedas has six supplements also known as Vedangas or the limbs of the vedas. Jyotish Vedanga--Vedic astronomy and astrology on which the Indian ancient astrology is based is one of these. Ancient sages like Vashistha, Bhrgu, and Garga were the masters of astrology and made many predictions that were true. Then before the beginning of Kali Yug (present time around 3102 BC) sage Parasara wrote the astrology text called Brhad Parasara Hora Sastra. He also taught it to his disciple sage Maitreya and so on. In this way the Indian astrology made a long journey. Then Indian astrology from India traveled to Persian, then to Babylonians. From this civilization to Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. Indian Ancient Astrology has six branches. These are:

Rig Veda: Indian Ancient Astrology Root 1. Gola: Positional astronomy 2. Ganita: Mathematical calculations to find Gola 3. Jataka: Natal astrology 4. Prasna: Answering question based on the time it is asked 5. Muhurta: Auspicious time to start anything 6. Nimitta: Omens and portents

Indian Astrology

With the help of Indian Astrology the actual traits of an individual, marital compatibility and the future, based on the position of planets at the time and place of birth can be defined. Indian astrology is believed to be the oldest system of astrology in the world. It is highly authentic and its predictions are believed to be the most accurate. Being based on the actual constellations of stars, this is the most widely used system of astrology across the world. Indian astrology believes Sun as the basic of life which is true as we cannot imagine life without Sun. Force of intelligence and spirituality is defined by the Sun as per Indian astrology vedas. The fertility cycles is governed by moon and it rules the emotional nature of individual. Spiritual practices, like Yoga, prayer and meditation are also the part of Indian astrology that help us to remove any kind of doshas because of bad karmas. Bhushan Kumar confident that READY will cross 100 crores M

akers of READY have all the right reasons to be elated. It has been close to a couple of months since the film’s First Look was revealed and ever since then READY has stayed on to be the most awaited film amongst the cine-goers. Though there have been dozens of films that have released in the interim, it is READY which is hogging all the limelight. “Yeah, I have heard about it,” says Bhushan, “First impression is the last impression and thankfully it was quite positive the moment READY started making waves. There have been countless examples of number of films where the First Look was poor and 90% of them failed at the box office. Of course I can’t name these films because I have been connected to 90% of them.”

“On the other hand look at films like DABANGG, GOLMAAL 3, ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI - these were the films where audience decided just on the basis of the First Look that they would surely catch them in theaters,” reasons Bhushan, “This is what further makes me confident about READY. Just like DABANGG where I had predicted that ‘Munni Badnaam’ and ‘Tere Mast Mast Do Nain’ would be huge chartbusters, I have been so sure of ‘Dhinka Chika’ and ‘Character Dheela’ as well. I am 100% convinced.”

June 2011 Edition

The only conversation in the industry today is whether READY would be the first film of 2010 to cross the 100 crores mark. “I am quite sure that the film would work well with the masses as well as classes. Also, since it is an out and out family entertainer, it has a potential for a much larger audience base. The way film is being promoted, I don’t think there would be any problems whatsoever to cross the 100 crores mark,” responds Bhushan in a confident tone.

Bond between Sallu-YRF gets stronger. Is SRK listening?

N

ot only is Salman Khan working with Yash Raj Films, pehli baar in Ek Tha Tiger but he has also got closer to them, thanks to brother, Sohail The bond between Salman Khan and the Yash Raj family, which was never so good, has suddenly gotten very strong, thanks to Sohail Khan. The director-producer has been spending a lot of time with Aditya Chopra trying to work out dates for their respective films, Kabir Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger and his Sher Khan. Apparently, both Sallu-starrers will be shot around the same time. Collective efforts Confirming these details Sallu’s bro says, “Aditya Chopra’s film (directed by Kabir Khan) will have a small shooting spell in July. After that, there will be a long stretch from September onwards. That’s when I start my shooting with Bhai (Salman) for my own film. Adi and I have sat together and worked out the collective schedules of the two films so that there’s no clash of dates.” Clash-less Talking about the Chopra heir, Sohail says, “He’s a really cool guy. So organised, it’s a pleasure working with him. Not for a moment was there a clash of interest

between my film and his. “Bhai is working with Yashraj for the first time. And both the families (the Khans and Chopras) are equally enthusiastic about it.” Elaborating on the volume of work that Salman has taken on these days, the

fillmaker says, “On the contrary, it’s only now that Bhai is working with all the right banners. It doesn’t matter whether the film is produced by Arbaaz, me or Yashraj. Bhai will only do the work if he likes the script. He has a fantastic script sense.”

Shocking: Urvashi Sharma robbed by her own driver! The actress reacts after culprit who allegedly stole from her, is caught. She recounts the turn of events... Actress Urvashi Sharma had her driver Sanjay Kumar Bhagat arrested on May 27 on charges of theft. She accused the young man who has worked for her five years, of stealing her valuables. Says Sharma, “It began last year when I lost an expensive diamond ring. At the time, I though I had misplaced it. A few months later, I lost my phone. Sanjay goes with me everywhere, so I asked him. He denied knowing anything about it. I recently moved house and have realised that my digital camera is missing. He feigned ignorance yet again. Shortly after, he went to Nepal to get married.”

Suspicions confirmed That’s when her suspicion grew. “I recalled that he wanted me to lend my camera to him when he was going to Nepal. I refused because it was an expensive piece. I also remembered that he had wanted my phone. My suspicions were confirmed when my maid told me that she had seen my missing phone with him and that he had also told her about a diamond ring he bought for his wife. The description was very similar to my ring. That’s when I was sure he had been stealing my stuff.” The actress summoned him back to Mumbai and confronted him. “I told him I’d hand him over to the police if he didn’t own up. He finally admitted to the theft while in police custody.” It was the breach of trust that affected Urvashi more than anything else. “I gave him my car to use as a taxi to make extra bucks. I helped him when his dad was unwell and this is what I got in return. He also told my bodyguard behind my back that he knows a lot of my secrets and can make a lot of money by giving it out to media,” she reveals. Samad Sheikh, senior inspector, Bandra Police Station, confirms, “We arrested him. He was produced before the court today and he admitted to his crime. We have also recovered Urvashi’s phone.”

Kung Fu Panda 2

The trailer of “Kung Fu Panda 2” claimed that the film comes with ‘double the awesomeness’. For a change, the final product indeed lives up to the tall claims of its trailer with a film that is both funnier and darker than its prequel. Our fat, lovable and perennially hungry Panda Po (Jack Black), though accepted by his dragon warrior mates is not accepted by master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman). Meanwhile, China has to contend with the rise of Lord Shen (Gary Oldman) who has a master weapon with which he is bent upon destroying Kung Fu and bringing China under his power. The only ones who can stop him is our motley gang of warriors. But the secrets to Po’s quest for his parents will threaten their mission. “Kung Fu Panda” took upon the well-known concept of the different fighting styles known in Kung Fu and instead of humans doing the different animals’ styles, had the animals do their own styles. It invented gags and situations that left the audiences laughing. This part not only takes the elements from the first that made it so popular, but builds upon it to humorous consequences. The film is also an example of how despite being limited by the idiosyncrasies of the characters and situations set in the first part, the

modifications and adaptations can be simply wonderful and original under the careful pen of imaginative writers and the camera of a skilled director. The film is funnier, yet the emotional search of the Panda’s roots and an evil, power-hungry villain makes it much darker than the original while also making it engaging for serious adults as well. Also, the metaphor of the film, against modernity and destructive science, is extremely serious and ‘adult’. “Kung Fu Panda 2” makes an allegory of the same in the form of Lord Shen (Gary Oldman) who, like the Europeans, figures out the use of gun powder in canons and sets out to destroy China itself. However, while unarmed Kung Fu fighters are able to prevent him in the film, the reality of what Europe did to the world with their new found power is much more destructive. Besides your usual voiceover, the film also features the voices of some other martial arts favourites, include Jean-Claude Van Damme and Jackie Chan to the delight of martial arts fans. The force is definitely stronger with this sequel that expands upon the vistas of the original and whose end foretells another instalment. In itself, it is a film not to be missed by young and old alike.

June 2011 Edition

Not very long ago we reported that Hollywood star Josh Hartnett and Bollywood beauty Bipasha Basu, who are co-starring in Singularity, might just be dating Will Josh Hartnett and Bipasha become a couple? However, recent photos of the 32-year-old actor reveal that he is very much seeing his supposed ex Sophie Lie. The duo was spotted together grabbing a lunchtime beverage in the Soho neighborhood of New York City, on Friday. Josh and Sophie Lie spent the day out in the sunshine, laughing and chatting away. Sources suggested that they had broken up because Lie, a Norwegian model, was not ready to settle down yet, while Hartnett wanted to. However, from the photographs it looks like the couple is back again and both of them have worked things out. In the report on May 9, a source on the sets of Singularity had revealed that Hartnett and Bips had come very close and were constantly in-touch. And that both were single and were bonding very strongly. We also heard that Josh who stars opposite Bips in Singularity, has recently wrapped filming it. The movie is described as an sweeping and riveting tale of an impossible love set across two time periods and continents. Impossible it is, we guess.

Will Delhi Belly bring the required ‘change’ in Hindi cinema? Ok! Enough said about the ‘Penchar’ and ‘DK Bose’. Time to get hands on the real stuff: Delhi Belly the movie. Yes, as usual you will hear it first on Bollywood Hungama. Both the above mentioned songs of the upcoming Aamir Khan Production have managed to grab eye balls. The songs are just an icing on the cake. The cake is the film itself. An insider who has seen the film informs, “Delhi Belly is going to be a rage. Forget small budget and all, the film is going to be a cult classic and Aamir Khan Productions will be proud of the results once it releases. Hindi cinema has had many dark comedies but Delhi Belly takes the genre to another level. Delhi Belly is like Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels. It’s like Snatch, very past paced with wit and abuses all over. By the sound of it, Delhi Belly looks like it’s going to take our industry to another high. The source reveals further, “You are right! Delhi Belly will do exactly what Dil Chahta Hai did a decade ago and what Dev D did few years back. Both were coming of age films that changed the way films are being made in Hindi cinema. This one though has an upper hand because 80% of the film is in English. It’s got Hindi too. What’s funny is that majority of the abuses are in Hindi language and that’s what makes it hilarious.” Talking about the performances, he said, “Delhi Belly is Imran’s best work ever on celluloid. Vir Das is fantastic but the guy who impressed everyone is Kunal Roy Kapur. He is going to be a super star once the film releases. Shenaz Treasuryvala is super cute.” But what about the reputation that Aamir Khan has carried ever since Lagaan. Will a film like this question his creativity? “I don’t think so. Aamir Khan himself quoted that he doesn’t think that anyone above the age of thirty would go and watch Delhi Belly. It will entertain the youth of our country and is definitely not a ‘masses’ cinema. Yes, it is entertaining and intriguing and that’s what will draw in the crowds. Delhi Belly’s USP is that it will definitely have a repeat audience”, said the source. If this source is to be believed and I’m sure he is, then Delhi Belly may be the ‘change’ that our Hindi Film Industry is looking for.

Jolie’s ‘Cleopatra’ Hollywood’s casting won’t be a sex symbol

couch still alive and kicking!

Even Gwyneth Paltrow has admitted to falling prey to the casting couch.

There still are plenty of weeds among the flowers in the Hollywood industry and it seems the predators from the casting couch will probably never disappear. Stars from Megan Fox, Lisa Rinna, Gwyneth Paltrow to Charlize Theron have confessed to falling prey to a number of legendary Hollywood directors that had tried to bed them since they found fame. “I’m very much aware of certain talent representatives and producers who leverage their ability to help launch careers into getting laid by ‘green’ talent,” Fox News quoted Alec Shankman, former Los Angeles talent agent and founder of the online casting agency GotCast, as saying. Veteran acting coach Mirren Lee said more often than not those “certain people” are the not-so established industry folk that prey on inexperienced, naïve actresses. And given the nature of the entertainment arena, it isn’t just the ladies of Tinseltown but even aspiring male actors have to deal with this type of dilemma. Nonetheless, Shankman said the most important thing is educating young talent on the issue. “As long as they are smart enough to realize that success isn’t driven by the ‘casting couch’ the problem will hopefully continue to diminish over time,” he said. “There are some incredible executives throughout Hollywood who are not looking to take advantage, but rather to nurture.”

A

ngelina Jolie, who is all set to portray Egyptian queen Cleopatra, a role popularised by Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor, says her portrayal will have more substance. The 1963 film, on the set of which Taylor met Richard Burton, her future husband, was the most expensive movie of its time and was made on a budget of $44 million. Jolie, 35, however, says that the new version, to be directed by David Fincher of ‘Social Network’ fame, aims to paint a more accurate portrait, the Telegraph reported. “She (Cleopatra) has been very misunderstood. I thought it was all about the glamour, but then I read about her and she was a very strong mother, she spoke five languages and she was a leader,” Jolie said. The producer, Scott Rudin, conceived the film with Jolie in mind. Taylor herself was reportedly not pleased. Insiders have said that she rebuffed Jolie’s attempts to get her blessing for the project and hated the idea of the film being remade.

Afridi urges Zardari to save Pakistani cricket K arachi: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has urged President Asif Ali Zardari to save cricket from the “clutches” of the Ijaz Butt-led Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Afridi told IANS from London Wednesday that he is hoping that Zardari, who is PCB’s chief patron, will intervene and resolve the latest crisis to have hit Pakistan cricket. “I appeal to President Zardari to save Pakistan cricket from complete destruction,” said Afridi, a day after the PCB suspended his central contract and issued him a show-cause notice for announcing his retirement from international cricket and for his outburst against the Board. Adrian Sutil

EW DELHI: Force India has said it was committed to field Adrian Sutil in Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix despite a possible criminal complaint against the driver in the wake of his reported altercation with Renault owner Eric Lux. Lux has threatened to file a complaint against Sutil for physically assaulting him in a night club in Shanghai after the Chinese Grand Prix, last month. Warne slapped with hefty fine for misconduct “Force India Formula One Team is aware of the statements made by both its driver, Adrian Sutil, and Mr Eric Lux of Genii Capital, pertaining to events following the Chinese Grand Prix. “Although the team continues to monitor the situation, it remains fully committed to its driver line-up at this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix,” Force India said in a statement. Lux, one of the owners of the Renault F1 team, had issued a statement on Monday after a showdown with Sutil at the M1nt private club in Shanghai. Lux was apparently injured by a broken champagne glass and a wound to the neck required 24 stitches, according to an Italian website. More on Sports The background of the altercation is not known yet but Sutil has maintained that Lux’s injuries occurred by accident and he did not deliberately wound him. The last time an incident like this occurred was when Belgian driver Bertrand Gachot was found guilty in a London court of assaulting a taxi driver in 1991 and was prevented from attending the Grand Prix of Belgium. In the event of a civil conviction, Sutil’s F1 super license could be at risk and he could temporarily lose his job with the team. Prior to this civil court judgement, neither the FIA nor Bernie Ecclestone are investigating the matter.

Afridi, who was hailed as a national hero in March when he almost single-handedly led Pakistan to the World Cup semifinals, finds himself in hot water as the PCB has also revoked all NOCs granted to him, meaning that he cannot feature in county cricket or any Twenty20 leagues. The flamboyant all-rounder has received emphatic support from various segments of the society. Even parliamentary sports panels are standing by Afridi and have asked Zardari to reorganise the PCB after removing its chairman Butt. According to The News, parliamentary panel chairmen, both from the government and the opposition parties demanded that Afridi be allowed to come back to international cricket and lead the Pakistani team. A depressed Afridi, who was removed from the captaincy, announced retirement from international cricket as a protest against the PCB attitude.

The Senate and National Assembly’s committees on sports held that the PCB patron-in-chief would be responsible for further deterioration of the cricket game in Pakistan if the PCB administration was given a free hand to humiliate star players and team leaders. “The only solution to the existing problems and put cricket on the right track is to reorganise the board without delay as Shahid Afridi’s protest is genuine and the people are deeply concerned over what is going on with the sport they love,” said Abdul Ghaffar Qureshi, the chairman of the Senate’s sports body. He said the chief patron should

have taken immediate notice and stopped the PCB from destroying cricket due to abrupt and frequent changes of captains. The National Assembly’s sports committee chairman, Iqbal Ali Khan, who submitted his resignation that was not accepted by the speaker, said Afridi’s arguments for quitting international cricket are valid and the development has demoralised the nation. “The president should come forward while taking cognizance of the Afridi protest and revamp the whole PCB without delay if the cricket loving Pakistani nation is to be satisfied.”

Blatter cleared by FIFA ethics committee

IPL a monster that will destroy international cricket: Ranatunga Colombo: Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga has described the Twenty20 Indian Premier League (IPL) as a “monster that will go on to destroy international cricket”. Ranatunga also said the International Cricket Council (ICC) is a “toothless tiger” and that the world cricket body is currently under the thumb of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). “I fear for the future of Test cricket. Not too long ago we had individuals like Malcolm Speed, Ehsan Mani and Malcolm Grey who stood against India. But the current ICC is weak and they simply give in. The ICC is becoming a toothless tiger. I have seen this IPL and I must say from the first day I didn’t like it. We have created a monster that will go on to destroy international cricket,” Ranatunga was quoted as saying in ‘The Island’.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter delivers his speech during the 35th Ordinary UE...

Zurich: FIFA’s ethics committee cleared president Sepp Blatter of any wrongdoing as two of soccer’s most senior officials were suspended Sunday in the worst corruption scandal to blight the sport’s governing body. Qatari Mohamed bin Hammam, who hours earlier had ended his campaign to unseat Blatter, was temporarily suspended along with Jack Warner, president of the CONCACAF region covering north and central America and the Caribbean. Blatter was cleared of any breach of FIFA’s statutes following an emergency sitting of the independent committee, freeing him to stand unopposed for a fourth term in charge of FIFA in Wednesday’s election. Bin Hammam and Warner were accused of arranging to pay delegates of the Caribbean Football Union $40,000 (24,265.95 pounds) in cash to vote for Blatter’s only rival. Both men are long-standing members of FIFA’s all-powerful 24-man executive committee, 10 of whom have been subject to allegations of corruption in the last year. Bin Hammam, head of the Asian Football Confederation, and Warner, a government minister in his native Trinidad & Tobago, are now temporarily suspended from any soccer-related activity. Both will be absent from the Congress where Blatter can expect to be re-elected to the post he has held since 1998. The case against Warner and Bin Hammam, who have denied any wrongdoing, will be heard in July, according to Namibian judge Petrus Damaseb who chaired Sunday’s meeting. Warner was furious at the outcome and told Reuters he had been the victim of a kangaroo court. “Blatter has to be stopped,” he said of his former long-term ally. “They came premeditated, they weren’t prepared to listen, they were handpicked to do a task and they did just that,” he said of the hearing. “The

guys were hand-picked by Blatter... a kangaroo court would be a decent thing to say.” FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke, who faced tough questioning during a feisty hour-long news conference, said the election would go ahead unless three-quarters of the 208 delegates voted to change the agenda. “I am not FIFA, I can’t change the agenda,” Valcke said. “It is up to the delegates -- they have the final say.” Valcke agreed that FIFA was facing “a watershed moment,” drawing comparisons with the International Olympic Committee’s crisis when IOC delegates were found guilty of taking bribes for votes to award the 2002 Winter Games to Salt Lake City. This crisis, whose tentacles spread into the very heart of the senior governance of the world’s most popular and richest sport, has arguably greater implications. Unlike fairly anonymous IOC officials, Blatter is the most famous sports politician in the world, has worked for FIFA for more than 35 years and been president for the last 13. During his time in charge, FIFA has grown rich through sales of TV rights, sponsorship and merchandising opportunities and currently boasts reserves of over $1 billion. While FIFA’s financial situation is sound, recent scandals have provoked widespread calls for reform of the powerful executive committee at the organization’s heart. Last November, two other exco members, Reynald Temarii and Amos Adamu, were banned over the cashfor-votes allegations concerning the hosting of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Asked if this was the lowest point in FIFA’s 107-year history, Valcke replied: “The reputation of FIFA? Maybe it’s not at the highest, that’s clear. It’s sad. “Definitely, there is a need for change. I’m not the FIFA president so he is the one who must decide

what he wants to do and FIFA must make the necessary changes so that the institution has systems in place to avoid something like this happening again. “This is the pattern of the work which we have to do very quickly in the next few months.” He also dramatically produced an e-mail from the president of the Puerto Rico FA who stated that he had been offered a $40,000 inducement, which he accepted, reported and was sending to FIFA. In a statement issued after the news conference, Blatter said: “The FIFA Ethics Committee has reached its decisions. I do not wish to comment in detail but simply to say that I regret what has happened in the last few days and weeks. “FIFA’s image has suffered a great deal as a result, much to the disappointment of FIFA itself and all football fans.” Warner had promised to unleash a “tsunami” against FIFA. “The complaints made in this matter are politically motivated against Mr Bin Hammam and me and are designed, among other things, to cause serious prejudice and damage to both Mr Bin Hammam and myself at one of the most critical times for the FIFA,” he said. Bin Hammam said he was very disappointed about the way the status of the proceeding has been presented at the news conference. “I am expecting that this will continue,” he said. “This is not how I understand fair play. I’m reserving all my rights.” The key allegations concerned a meeting of the Caribbean Football Union in May 10-11 in Port of Spain, attended by Warner and Bin Hammam and Caribbean soccer officials. Blatter was interrogated at Bin Hammam’s request because he may have known about payments, FIFA said, but Damaseb said nothing wrong had been found.

ICC under the thumb of BCCI: Ranatunga Sri Lanka’s national cricket team, currently touring England, arrived in the UK in four different batches due to their IPL commitments. Some of the team’s key players missed a warm-up game. The West Indies, meanwhile, had a weakened side for their Test series against Pakistan due to the IPL that was taking place simultaneously. The World Cup-winning captain said ICC’s priorities should be to look after the well-being of the game rather than dancing to the tunes of BCCI. “The ICC’s job is to protect the game. They don’t have to favour anyone. The game has been nurtured by honourable men of the ICC for decades, but at present, ICC looks to be under the thumb of India,” he said. Ranatunga supported former England captain Tony Greig’s recent comments that if he had a say in world cricket, he would have prevented India from controlling the ICC. “Hats off to Tony. Everyone these days fear India and no one wants to antagonise the BCCI. Tony is spot on, except for the fact that he has stated Bangladesh and Zimbabwe boards do whatever the Indians want. He should have added Sri Lanka Cricket too. SLC is like a puppet on a string. The job of the ICC is to protect the game rather than any individual country,” Ranatunga said. www.indian-times.com.au

ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT SEX LIFE?

AYURVEDIC HELP

Dr. C.R.S. Kumar

S

ex is a normal and important part of life. Seeking help to keep active sex life is highly essential for happy life. Problems such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and low sperm count are often main causes for male’s inability to participate in sex. Among all these, Erectile Dysfunction is a major concern and affecting about one million men of all ages in Australia, which is said to be difficulty in getting and keeping an erection. This is often associated with physical and psychological problems which can be a warning sign for a serious life threatening illness, like diabetes or heart disease. Keeping good health and active sex life with help of Ayurveda will lower the chances of having these problems. There is no doubt that low libido is a serious concern nowadays, as it is made obvious by the increasing amount of erectile dysfunction

drugs surfacing on the market. Yet the conventional approach of these drugs tends to focus on suppressing symptoms without looking at the bigger picture and finding the root cause of the problem. The main causes for the erectile dysfunction are psychological issues such as performance anxiety, depression and psychiatric disorders and physical causes may include reduced blood flow due to Atherosclerosis. Drug abuse, smoking and problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic renal failure, obesity, high cholesterol, and urological problems are also prime causative factors for erectile dysfunction as well as low libido. According to Ayurveda poor diet and inappropriate food combining, overuse of bitter, astringent, salty, sour or spicy foods, emotional strain, improper fasting, old age, genetic factors, and suppression of urges, excessive exercise and bicycling are important life style aspects causing low libido. Other important causative factors seen in Ayurvedic clinical practice associated with low

sexual energy arises from shukra dhatu, the male reproductive tissue. Within this dhatu lays the great potential energy for procreation as well as the fuel for mental focus, concentration, and creativity. Majority of the sexual problems are associated with the vata dosha. Ayurvedic treatment is mainly concentrating on improving sukra dhathu with help of Rasayana (Rejuvenation), Vajeekarana (Aphrodisiac) treatments and reducing vata predominance with help of Vata pacifying drugs such as Dasamoola, Aswagandha, Shthavari, Bala etc,. It is very important to undergo Ayurvedic detoxification before taking Rasayana and Vajeekarana treatments to achieve desired affects. Along with this regular intake of quality diet and reducing stress through methods such as regular yoga, meditation, nature walks, and other creative means can help clients respond better to Ayurvedic treatment and improve their condition faster. libido are general stress, overwork, substance abuse, improper diet and lifestyle, financial worries and troubled relationships, and using sex as one of the main outlets for stress and tension. In order to prevent erectile dysfunction and low libido treatment has to address mainly psychological problems, physical and emotional problems. Ayurveda can certainly help us to get a deeper understanding of these complex issues and deal with them in a holistic manner with the use of herbs along with diet and lifestyle guidelines. A unique aspect of this approach is that it is not just concerned with a quick fix, but it is aimed at dealing with the long-term management of these imbalances and resolving the underlying factors that caused them in the first place. Yoga

- The Science of Life

For anyone who has even begun to truly investigate yoga, one thing is for certain – it’s much more than a just system of stretches, exercises and relaxation techniques. Under the surface, yoga is as vast as the Universe itself, and coming to know it… well… it just takes time (and some effort, of course). In simple words, yoga is a fantastic system for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. But the practice of yoga is really an exploration of our selves on all these levels… It is a ‘science’ which provides a logical, step-by-step process for a new understanding of our selves and of the universe around us. Many miss this fact simply because they have dabbled ‘piecemeal’ with random aspects of

June 2011 Edition

the greater whole of the yogic system. In the broadest sense, yoga is a ‘Way of Life’. It teaches us how to proceed in life with wisdom, awareness, and true understanding. So what is yoga’s contribution to our lives? It helps us to break free from the shackles of ignorance… from our habits and conditionings… and to discover the true roots of disharmony, unhappiness and frustrations in our life. As Epictetus said in 60 A.D; “Men are not disturbed by things, but by the views they take of them”. Yoga teaches us that it is only our wrong views, our misperceptions and conditioned attitudes that stand in the way of success and fulfillment in life.

Tribals Say Smoking is Just Like Mouth Fresheners

F

or the tribal folk in Orissa’s Koratpur District, the antitobacco day didn’t make a big difference as they continue to smoke ‘Pika’ a locally made cigarette. The tribal people aren’t aware and are ignorant of the hazardous effects of tobacco consumption. Pika is a handmade 5-8 inch longcigarette made of Kendu, a tobacco leaf. The women get tobacco at Rs 20-25 per packet, which lasts them for a week. Smoking of ‘Pika’ by tribal women has created a generation of active and passive smokers in the region, who shockingly have no qualms about smoking the killer stick. “I exactly don’t remember when I started smoking but I know I have learnt it from my parents. If I don’t

smoke I feel suffocated. Smoking is just like a mouth fresheners. I cannot live without smoking. Now if someone comes and tells us to give up smoking how it is possible? Can we give up eating rice? We buy it from the market and make this cigarette. We make two to three and smoke one by one when one finish we smoke another,” said Galartha Naik, a tribal woman. The medical officers of the region said the growing babies in the womb of smoking mother are at higher risk. “Growing children in the womb of the mother, suffer a lot. There is low baby weight (LBW) phenomenon in this area also. At times we find children are suffering in the mothers’ womb from various respiratory tract infections, oxygen supply is very

less. In a pregnant woman, oxygen is supplied to the placenta and when women smoke, it is been restricted due to smoking, the baby suffers a lot,” said Shanka Sekhar Chowdhury, the district medical officer. According to statistics there are about 62 distinct tribal groups in the state. Medical statistics also reveal there are approximately 120 million smokers in India, about 37 percent of all men and 5 percent of all women between the ages of 30 and 69. How We Judge Couples’ Intimacy Influenced by Serotonin

The brain chemical serotonin plays an important role in the judgments we make about peoples’ close personal relationships, says a new study. Healthy adult volunteers recruited by experts at the University of Oxford were made to watch photos of couples, and rate how ‘intimate’ or ‘romantic’ they perceived them to be. The volunteers, whose levels of serotonin activity had been lowered, rated couples in photos as being less intimate and less romantic than volunteers with normal serotonin activity. The approach involved giving amino acid drinks to two groups of volunteers in order to manipulate blood concentrations of the amino acid tryptophan, which is a vital ingredient in the synthesis of serotonin. One group received drinks that contained tryptophan. The other group received drinks that did not contain tryptophan. They were then asked to make judgments about sets of photographs of couples. Differences in the judgments made by the two groups reflected changes in their serotonin activity. “Serotonin is important in social behavior, and also plays a significant role in psychological disorders such as depression,” said Prof Robert Rogers of Oxford University, who led the research. “We wanted to see whether serotonin activity influences the judgments we make about peoples’ close personal relationships.”

VITAMIN E

VITAMIN E Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that exists in eight different forms. Alphatocopherol (α-tocopherol) is the name of the most active form of vitamin E in humans. It is also a powerful biological antioxidant. Vitamin E can be obtained in two forms, natural and synthetic. It is not usual that parents pay too much attention about their child’s intake of Vitamin E as they do with other vitamins and minerals. However, Vitamin E is one of the most important vitamins to keep a child’s health and growth in tip top condition. BENEFITS OF VITAMIN E: Vitamin E is one of the vitamins needed by children to stay healthy. It is an antioxidant which helps the body fight free radical damage. It fights against the natural and continual process of deterioration of all body tissues. It is also useful to improve the assimilation of fat in the body. Foods containing vitamin E also contain healthy fats necessary for the body. It keeps the heart in a healthy condition.. Vitamin E helps maintain body tissues, like eye, skin and liver. It protects lungs from pollution.

It helps in the formation of red blood cells Assists proper growth in children and prevents anaemia It’s important for immunity, DNA repair, and other metabolic processes. Vitamin E is very useful in treating Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) - the most common chronic liver disease among children. EXCESS OF VITAMIN E: Vitamin E toxicity is usually very rare, but can lead to bleeding problems in children.

CHILDREN IN RISK:

SOURCES OF VITAMIN E:

Although vitamin E deficiency is rare in children, the following groups have to be cautious of Vitamin E deficiency.

Particularly high levels of vitamin E can be found in the following foods:

Premature babies

Very low birth weight infants

Zinc deficient children

Children on special no fat diets for medical reasons or other reasons

Children with mal absorption who can’t absorb fat soluble vitamins, including children with Crohn’s disease and cystic fibrosis

Children with abetalipoproteinemia, a rare condition that affects how they make and digest fats and fat soluble vitamins, and

Rare genetic conditions that affect the transfer proteins that maintain normal vitamin E levels in the blood

Most of these children can be treated with vitamin E supplements. VITAMIN E DEFICIENCY: Vitamin E deficiency in children is associated with problems such as poor transmission of nerve impulses including impaired balance and coordination (ataxia), injury to the sensory nerves (peripheral neuropathy), muscle weakness (myopathy), cognitive dysfunction leading to understanding and reading difficulties and degeneration of the retina (pigmented retinopathy) that can cause blindness.

Asparagus, Avocado, nuts like Almonds, Sunflower seeds, , peanuts, hazelnuts, Olives, tomato, spinach and other leafy vegetables, vegetable oils like canola oil, olive oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, wheat germ oil, carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, fortified cereals etc. The best way to get enough of the essential vitamin E as well as other vitamins is to eat a balanced diet that contains a variety of foods. Supplements can be used as a part of many medical conditions where the procurement of vitamins and minerals are not possible from natural sources to maintain optimum health. Advice of your health practitioner is very important if you are not sure. For most children (except children with inherent problems or underlying disease), vitamin and mineral supplements are totally unnecessary. Parents should ensure that their child gets plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables as a part of their daily diet to avoid any vitamin or mineral deficiencies, naturally. • You may ask your personal query to Raj Kothuru (Homeopath) via email drraj@aurahealth.com.au or phone 0425 761 826 / (03) 9044 5077 regarding any of your health problems.
