20,000 kg of adulterated sweets confiscated in Gorakhpur A

U

ttar Pradesh Police and Department of Food and Civil Supplies officials seized around 20,000 kilograms of adulterated sweets from Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur District. The Food and Civil Supplies Department raided sweets shops across the city, forcing them to shut down on Sunday. “This is not pure sweetmeat as it was not cleared by any authority. As we know, milk production cannot increase suddenly to fulfill the sudden demand, so it is obviously adulterated sweetmeat. Nobody even came to claim this. This adulterated sweetmeat would be destroyed,” said Anup Kumar Shrivastava, the City

Magistrate of Gorakhpur. The local sweet makers were unhappy with their shops being raided regularly. “We buy this from Varanasi market. The officials should catch the culprits there rather than seizing it here. We have verified license from the wholesale market. The officers should go to the wholesale markets and collect the samples from there and take proper action,” said Nand Kishore, a sweetmaker from Gorakhpur. “When the sweetmeat is sold easily from the wholesale markets then the administration should catch the culprits there itself,” he added. Speaking to media persons in

New Delhi, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad appreciated the role of the electronic media in bringing consumer awareness among the people. He also said since during festive season the demand of sweets increases, and it is the duty of the State Government to protect their citizens from having adulterated food items. “A raid should be carried out wherever sweets are made. They should check if any kind of adulteration is going on. A week before the Diwali celebration and in 2 days postDiwali days, the State Government should be on high alert,” Azad said on Sunday.

forfeit their claim on the disputed land. The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court had earlier on September 30 ruled by majority that the disputed land in Ayodhya be divided into three parts.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Chakrapani said: “ They are the 10th party in the conflict to file a case in the Supreme Court on the issue. “Hindu Mahasabha never fights for personal and parochial issues; it fights for the rights of the whole Hindu society. We are the 10th party in the conflict and we have filed a case in the Supreme Court regarding the possession of the land, urging the Apex Court to hand it over to the Hindus only,” he added. He also said Muslims should

The High Court bench decided to divide the disputed 2.7 acres of land into three parts, with each of the three parties to the suit getting a part of it. The ownership of the disputed land has been divided as follows: (1) Ram Lalla, the birthplace of Lord Ram, given to Lord Ram (2) Sita Rasoi and Ram Chabootra to Nirmohi Akhara and (3) The remaining part to be given to the Sunni Waqf Board. Meanwhile, there will be a status quo in Ayodhya for three months during which a petition can be filed.

Girl-dominated gang running loan racket busted

“The gang operated through 26 mobile phones and 16 bank accounts, obtained on fake IDs. Police also recovered unused SIM cards and 18 ATM cards from them.”

N

ew Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) Eight people, including five girls, were arrested in the capital for duping more than 500 students in an education loan racket, police said Sunday. ‘They advertised extensively in local dailies in NCR (National Capital Region) offering easy education loans,’ police said. People who responded to the ads would be convinced by the girls to deposit some money in a bank account. Few days later, the gang would change

their numbers, leaving the students duped. According to police, Varun Sardana (24), Himanshu Sharma (21), Sunny Pal (22) and the five girls, aged between 19 to 27 years, were arrested Thursday afternoon from their office in Mukherjee Nagar. The gang operated through 26 mobile phones and 16 bank accounts, obtained on fake IDs. Police also recovered unused SIM cards and 18 ATM cards from them.

It’s roaring biz for Gir courtesy Big B AHMEDABAD: The roar of lions showcased by superstar Amitabh Bachchan in the Gujarat Tourism campaign seems to be yielding fruitful results for the Gir Sanctuary. The sanctuary has witnessed such a good response from the tourists that it is completely booked for the fortnight till November 15 - a record in the last 15 years for this only abode of the Asiatic lion. Ever since the sanctuary reopened on October 15, on an average, 70 to 80 permits were issued daily. The upper limit for issuing permits was 90 permits per day. However till November 11, there is no room in Sinh Sadan and even the advance permits issued to casual visitors are over booked. Officials said that of the 90 permits issued daily, about 50 per cent were issued in advance. And now the first available advance permit is of November 15. According to officials, not just the Sinh Sadan, which is the official guest house of the forest department, but even hotel owners were having a great time.

Of these 45 advance permits, over 25 were pocketed by the hotel owners. In Sinh Sadan, majority of rooms barring the VIP room have been booked in advance. “The permits are issued for those who pre-plan their

trips, but we don’t have any advance permits. On an average, roughly 70 permits have been issued ever since the sanctuary re-opened,” Sandeep Kumar, deputy conservator of forest, headquarter, told TOI. Kumar said that even Devaliya, the interpretation zone, has also seen a rise in the number of tourists. “It has been noticed that the number of schools coming here for picnics has seen a sharp rise. After visiting Devaliya, schools head for Somnath,” he said. Kumar said the figures of the first 15 days of last year cannot be compared to this year, for Diwali festival last year was soon after the sanctuary opened, and hence number of tourists was bigger.

Sikh Americans disappointed at Obama skipping Golden Temple WASHINGTON: Sikh Americans are still upset over US President Barack Obama’s decision to skip a visit to the Golden Temple in Amritsar, saying the reasons given by the White House were not satisfactory. ‘I deeply regret President Obama missed the opportunity to send a powerful message of global peace and harmony in the South Asian region and in the world,’ said a community leader, who was at the forefront of the proposal for the US leader’s visit to the Sikhs’ holiest shrine. ‘Harimandir Sahib, (Golden Temple) is sacred to all Indians and not just for Sikhs. Visiting there would show America’s respect for all faiths and traditions,’ said Rajwant Singh, chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education. ‘Although he is winner of a Nobel peace prize, he would have been blessed at this spiritual oasis of peace,’ Rajwant Singh told IANS. ‘Also this would have been a wonderful opportunity to show that America is not all about war and money.’ ‘A perception has been created wrongly or rightly that political and economic considerations can shift

decisions by this White House,’ Rajwant Singh said alluding to reports that Obama had dropped his plan to visit the Golden Temple to avoid wearing a head scarf that would strengthen a misperception that he was a Muslim. ‘Not only Sikhs are disappointed but all Indians and many Americans as is evident from Indian blogs and American blogs. People are overwhelmingly upset with this decision,’ Rajwant Singh said. ‘The reasons given by the White House is insufficient and does not specifically address the issue.’ Dr. I.J. Singh, a Sikh writer and a commentator on contemporary Sikh affairs, was also critical of Obama’s decision to visit Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi instead. ‘It is not a simple trade off when one realises what each edifice represents,’ Singh said noting, ‘Harmandar Sahib is a place of worship for millions.’ ‘Humayun’s Tomb is just that - a fine reminder of monarchical profligacy and excesses; the final resting place of a king, perhaps his lasting achievement in the sands of time.’

New Delhi: India and China should address each other’s “concerns and sensitivities” on issues impinging security and well being, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said on Monday. He also said that a hotline between the two prime ministers will also become operational soon. “As rising powers, India and China are projected to have a competitive relationship in the final analysis. It is up to us to disapprove such a scenario by presenting examples of concrete partnership,” Krishna said addressing a seminar here. “While we accept that there are outstanding

issues between the two large countries, we have to address each other’s concerns and sensitivities on issues impinging each other’s security and well being,” he said. He said, “China should provide a levelplaying field to Indian companies, especially in pharma and IT sectors, where we face barriers restricting market access.” The Minister said India would offer a warm welcome to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao when he visits India in December. The seminar was organised jointly by Congress and Communist Party of China on relations between the two countries.

N

ew Delhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday sought to strengthen economic partnerships with hydrocarbon producing countries, saying the demand for this source of energy would increase by over 40 percent in the next 10 years. ‘Hydrocarbons will continue to be our major source of energy for quite sometime in the future,’ Singh said after inaugurating Petrotech 2010, the ninth international oil and gas conference and exhibition here. ‘We seek to build strong economic partnerships with other (hydrocarbon) producing countries and their oil and gas industries to the mutual benefit of each other,’ he said addressing over 4,000 delegates from 50 countries. ‘We also seek to work together with other countries, especially those which are active in the oil and gas space, to tackle the problem of climate change.’ Manmohan Singh said in India, the demand over the next 10 years will increase by over 40 percent while an increase in the supply from maturing oil fields is expected to be around 12 percent. ‘Oil and gas today are not seen merely as commodities to be traded freely. They are often used by countries to meet their political objectives. More importantly, we have to take into account the changing pattern of growth in the demand for oil,’ Singh said. Citing a substantial rise in the demand for hydrocarbons in Asia, he said: ‘This shift has been caused by high rates of economic growth and increasing populations in many Asian countries.’

Pointing to climate change as a major challenge, the prime minister said that because of it, the demand on energy technologies goes beyond productivity and efficiency issues, and emerging energy technologies have to be adequately equipped to manage carbon emissions. ‘We also need a rethink on the traditional energy basket which is loaded in favour of fossil fuels,’ he said. Complimenting the organisers of Petrotech 2010 for thinking green, the prime minister said: ‘I am also told that our national oil corporations have invested heavily in a number of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects. This will help our government’s efforts to build a greener economy.’ Petrotech exhibition showcases the latest technology of both Indian and international oil and gas companies.

Mukesh Ambani again tops list of richest Indians

R

eliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani has topped the latest Forbes’ India Rich List with a net worth of 27 billion dollars for the third consecutive time. Steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal remains at No. 2 with a net worth of 26.1 billion dollars. Moving up to third position this year is IT outsourcer Wipro’s Azim Premji. His wealth increased to 17.6 billion dollars from 14.9 billion dollars last year amid an improving outlook for the sector. Premji moves up to third place, displacing younger Ambani sibling Anil Ambani, who dropped to No. 6. India’s rising stock market and a booming economy that’s expanding by 8.5 percent have boosted the net worth of richest people, according to Forbes’ India Rich List. The combined net worth of India’s 100 richest people is 300 billion dollars, up from 276 billion dollars last year. This year, there are 69 billionaires on the India Rich List, 17 more than last year. Also improving on their previous ranking to No. 4 are brothers Shashi and Ravi Ruia with 15 billion dollars, more than their last year’s net worth of 13.6 billion dollars. to be careful about allotting flats to your relatives.” Terming the charges against him as “politically motivated”, Deshmukh said he had only cleared the letter of intent in which there were just 20 members, “mostly including defence services people”. “I had then forwarded it to the Revenue Department. After that I don’t know what happened as I resigned as chief minister,” he said. While there was apprehension in a section of the Congress that accepting Chavan’s resignation may encourage the Opposition to target Deshmukh and Shinde as well, party sources said given the fact that many Opposition leaders, including Suresh Prabhu of the Shiv Sena, also own flats in the complex and that the previous NDA government was “equally culpable” on the issue of environmental clearance for the project, the government was “more than prepared to engage” the Opposition on this issue. Meanwhile, the NCP refused to be drawn into the controversy, saying that it was an internal matter of the Congress. “We have no reaction to give,” said NCP general secretary D P Tripathi.

His aides alleged that former chief ministers Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Narayan Rane had also recommended several names for allotment of flats in the residential complex, and the first two were instrumental in clearing and sanctioning the housing project. Three of Deshmukh’s aides were reported to have flats in the complex. But the former CMs rubbished the charges. Deshmukh said he had no idea about the alleged irregularities, and the responsibility lay with the Revenue Department which was then headed by Chavan. He also pointed a finger at Chavan, stating that the entire problem started after the inclusion of civilians as members of the society, although when he got the file, the project was only meant for retired defence services officials and Kargil heroes and widows. Asked about the allotment of flats to Chavan’s relatives, Deshmukh told The Indian Express, “As a part of the government, when you are putting conditions to a society to include civilians, being in politics you have

ew Delhi A day after Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan offered to resign, suspense over his fate continued on Sunday with Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee saying that the decision would take some “more time”. But party sources indicated that while a final call would be taken after Diwali, Chavan’s chances of survival were very bleak. Mukherjee and Union Defence Minister A K Antony, who is also in-charge of the party’s affairs in Maharashtra, form the twomember panel set up by Congress president Sonia Gandhi to submit a report on the alleged scam in the Adarsh Housing Society in Mumbai, including the allotment of flats to Chavan’s mother-in-law, sister-inlaw and brother-in-law. Antony and Mukherjee held their first meeting on the issue at the latter’s residence on Sunday evening, following which Mukherjee said they would need more time as they have to “examine all documents”. Hours before the meeting, Antony had said at the sidelines of a function here that “it will take time, but it will not take unusual time.” Incidentally, Mukherjee and Antony had selected Chavan as the Chief Minister after Vilasrao Deshmukh resigned in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Meanwhile, Chavan is camping in New Delhi, seeking an audience with Mukherjee. Chavan, who spent the entire day at a five-star hotel

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding DABANGG 2, the sequel to the all time blockbuster, Abhinav Kashyap’s DABANGG, a buzz doing the rounds in the film circle surprised one and all who got to hear about it. As per the grapevine, the sequel to DABANGG is definitely happening but it is going to be Sohail Khan who may be directing the sequel and not Abhinav Kashyap. Rumour has it that the reason behind the drastic change is that after the superlative success of DABANGG, Abhinav has hiked his price to 18 crore and therefore the fall out with the producer, Arbaaz Khan, which led to Sohail Khan stepping in. However there has been no official confirmation from either side and it’s still early days to jump to any conclusion regarding the director of DABANGG 2.

isha might have received a lukewarm response at the box-offi ce but one song that is ruling the airwaves consistently is the Punjabi folk composition Gal meethi meethi bol. Though the song is seen in the movie only for 4050 seconds, it has caught on for its foot-tapping rhythm and effortless rendition by Tochi Raina. The singer, who had earlier crooned O pardesi from Dev. D and the male version of Iktara in Wake Up Sid! for Amit Trivedi is basking in the success of his third consecutive hit with the composer. He says, “We knew that Gal meethi meethi bol would be a hit. Amit knows

which song suits my voice and offers it to me accordingly.” Tochi explains that whenever he takes up a song, he fi rst reads the lyrics, understands their meaning and relevance in the fi lm and then sings. “I try to comprehend the poetry in the lyrics. Beautiful lyrics coupled with a lovely composition inspire me to sing better,” he adds. Known as a singer, Tochi is also actively involved in Sufi sm and spiritualism. He practises music therapy and treats asthma patients too. He fi rst realised the healing powers of music 15-16 years ago when he was a teacher at Delhi. He says, “A student suffering from asthma

came up to me and said that he would get tired after singing for just fi ve minutes. I was doing some research in vocal sounds at that time and took up his case as a challenge. I gave him several vocal exercises that cleared his nose, ears and throat and helped him to sing confi dently.” Soon word spread and Tochi started treating asthma patients. In fact, he has also treated his manager, whose vocal chords were affected after an operation. “My friend introduced her to me and she broke down. For a year, I helped her to imbibe a positive energy and follow spiritualism,” he smiles.

With Vishal & Shekhar staying on to be the fi rst choice for many a fi lmmakers when it comes to music for an outing seems to be designed on the lines

of Hollywood romcoms, their coming into Break Ke Baad is not a surprise. What’s surprising though is to see Prasoon Joshi on the credits as a lyricist with whom Vishal-Shekhar are working for the fi rst time. However, since Prasoon has worked in last three fi lms made by Kunal Kohli (Hum Tum, Fanaa, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic), it is understandable as well. FASTIVAL FOOD

INDIANTIMES

Diwali: Indian Food Customs: D

iwali, the festival of lights, can very easily be called Diwali, the festival of sweets. For once, you can gorge on delicious traditional Indian foods and sweets without feeling guilty. After all, Diwali without sweets is almost like Christmas without snow or Easter without the bunny. So, if you have a sweet tooth, you will have a ball visiting Indian households around Diwali. And the best part is that people start serving and distributing sweets almost a week before the festival and carry on with the Diwali hangover well after the day has come and gone. In India, it’s boom time for sweet shop owners (halwais) who have sweet (mithai) boxes lined up by the hundreds. These boxes also make for excellent Diwali gifts. Many households, however, make these mithais at home. Milk-based sweets like kheer, phirni, kulfi and barfis are extremely popular. These are different forms of cooked and sweetened milk embellished with nuts and served chilled either in liquid or frozen form. Laddus are delightful, sweet

yellow balls associated with celebrations of all kinds. These round delights can be made of ground wheat flour or gram flour. Some laddus have sesame seeds; others include saffron. Whatever the ingredients, the laddu is always yummy. Pop a whole one in your mouth, and you’ll be one satisfied soul. Gulab Jamuns, which are deepfried balls made of milk solids dipped in sugary syrup, are perhaps one of the most popular Indian sweets. Pretzel-shaped jalebieven

Dry fruits come a close second to sweets. All kinds of dry fruit is eaten and gifted during Diwali. Hampers containing an assortment of dry fruit are also popular Diwali gifts. Pistachios, almonds, walnuts, raisins, dried apricots and cashews top the list. If you get fed up of sweets, these are great for a change of taste. Snacks and munchies are always available for guests. Indian snacks are known to be delicious, crispy, spicy, full of flavor and very addictive. Munch on these, and you will be hooked. As far as the main course goes, most Indian households cook and serve vegetarian food on this auspicious holiday. Since the country is so vast, the kind of food preparations depend on which part of India you come from. Rice, rotis, lentils, pulao (rice), vegetables and curries are usually always made. And, after a meal, it’s time for sweets again.

Fastival Special Recipe

Kesar Rasmalai D

iwali is one of the most popular Indian festival and would always remain to be so. Each region in India has a special way of celebrating it; the day after Diwali also heralds the beginning of a New financial year for some of the Hindus. So here’s a beautiful and rich-looking Indian bengali sweet recipe that I am sure many of you must have tasted in Indian restaurants - the Kesar Rasmalai! Rasmalai is by far the most cherished indian sweet in the whole country, superceeded only by tough competitiors like “Gulab Jamun” and “Rasgulla”. People also think that its hard to make rasmalai at home, which I don’t think is true. Yes, the end result does depend on the “channa” (recipe below) that you use, so you should either make it at home, or buy from a good sweet-shop. So go ahead and try my Kesar Rasmalai and see how you can woo your friends and family with this winning recipe!

INGREDIENTS:  4 cups whole milk for channa  1 cup sugar  3 cups of water  6-7 strands of saffron mixed in 3 tbsp warm milk  Cardamom, pistachio, almonds - slivered  lemon juice

Ingredients: 1 cup - split (Yellow) moong dal 1/2 cup - ghee 3/4 cups to 1 cup - sugar 1/2 cup - milk Cashews/raisins roasted in ghee for garnishing 1/2 tsp - cardamom powder A few strands of saffron

Method: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Soak 1 cup moong dal overnight. Next morning, grind to a paste. Take a heavy kadai/non-stick skillet. Heat 1-2 tsp of ghee and saute the cashews and raisins, until the raisins get all puffy and cashews are roasted. 5. In the same skillet, add 1/4 cup of ghee and warm it up. 6. Add the dal paste and stir continuously, not allowing lumps to form. 7. This part is very tricky since the dal cooks really fast, irrespective of the ghee. 8. Keep the heat at the lowest and keep stirring even after the dal becomes thick. This is when your hands will become your enemies and hate you for making them work. 9. Add the rest of the ghee intermittently 10. Meanwhile mix the sugar with water/milk in a pan and bring to a boil. 11. You can add the saffron and cardamom powder to this mixture. 12. Otheriwise you can simply add them towards the end to the dish directly. 13. Add this slowly to the cooking dal. 14. Keep the heat low at all times and break lumps if formed while adding the sugar and water/ milk mix. 15. Cook until the ghee surfaces and halwa gets a shiny, creamy texture. 16. Garnish with cashews and raisins.

DIWALI RECIPES Diwali or Deepawali is perhaps the most beautiful of Hindu festivals in India. Diwlai signifies the victory of good over evil. It is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, the king of Lanka. Also Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi is worshipped in every household. Vareity of food is cooked, relished and gifted to near and dear ones. People light candles and oil lamps in their homes and offices. Here we have collected few Diwali recipes to make your celebrations all the more tempting.

 3 cups whole milk (for the ras)  4-5 tbsp sugar (for the ras)

METHOD:  First keep the 3 cups of milk for ras to boil until it thickens. Take a small cup, fill it with 3 tbsp milk; warm it in the microwave for 10 seconds, then add 6-7 strands of saffron to it and rub them etween your fingers to extract orange-yellow color and saffron flavor. Then add this to the boiling milk. Also add the sugar for the ras to it and add cardamom, pista and almond to it.Once the milk is reduced to about half it’s size, remove from flame and set aside to cool in another container filled with cold water or ice cubes.

Double Celebrations for the Dutts!

One slap just not enough ! An array of slaps was witnessed recently at the sets of Mere Brother ki Dulhan, awarded to none other than Khan-next-door Imran by Brit babe Katrina Kaif!! Here’s what happened... Turns out Imran is learning a lot more about ‘originality and perfection’ from mamoo Aamir Khan, for he insisted on getting slapped in real for a scene to be shot in the movie. Above and beyond fake slaps, he was! Not surprisingly, authenticity came at a price! If he had imagined to have the slap shot sequence done and wrapped up in one take, boy, was he wrong! The number to be highlighted is 16. That’s how many times the retake was done, and also the number of times Kat slapped Immu.

Why 16, you ask? Imran, true to his intention, had himself hit 16 times, so they ended up with plenty of shots to select and edit from. Katrina we hear was happy with one time, but Imran’s own insistence raised the number. To add to this is the fact that there was a counter set up to track how many slaps he got!! Consequently, Imran Khan, not a real life superhero was in pain of course. While Katrina might not feel proud, she can satisfy and shut her critics for once, for looking authentic in her act, ha ha! Simple adage applies - no pain, no gain!

This film had opened the doors to Hollywood for the 50year-old Bollywood star. He got the honor of being part of this Oscar winning film and also bagged a role in the US television show ‘24′. with their transvestite friend, the two aspire to assert their position in this world of crime. But when they are wrongly convicted for a murder and sent to the Juvenile Reformatory, they discover a World more chaotic and tough to survive in, than the one they left behind. The senior inmates with the participation and permission of the dreadful Juvenile warden, subject the two friends to all kinds of torture to suppress their sense of power. But not the ones to take it lying down, they start developing a more sinister criminal psychosis instead of reforming and set on a quest for ultimate power. Set free at twenty three, Vijay (the intelligent one with dangerous ideas) and Yakub (the hot headed one) form a gang of teenage boys to rule the slums they were born in. The vicious cycle of life continues. But life forces the two men to make a decision between choosing their misguided childhood dreams and redemption. Redemption comes, but with a heavy price. ALLAN KE BANDAY (Children of the Divine) is a film about children in crime, about the inspiration for redemption and above all, this is a film about love. Love for all of us ‘Children of the Divine’.

eteran actor Dharmendra, who is also known as the first He-man of B-Town, has crafted a new role for himself. It’s learnt that Dharmendra has turned lyricist in his upcoming film YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA. This will be first time that Dharmendra has tried his skill with the pen. The said song is mostly

written in Punjabi verse and recently it was recorded to be added in the film. Dharmendra on his part is quite excited about this composition. He is waiting to hear the final version of the song, which will be running in parts throughout the length of the film. Well, let’s hope this song packs as much punch as Dharam Ji is known for otherwise.

SONAL CHAUHAN Bebo opts out of ‘Heroine’

D

irector Madhur Bhandarkar’s long talked about project Heroine, is in news for all the wrong reasons. Though the talks between him and Kareena Kapoor were all over, there are apparently several other matters that are yet to be settled. The latest we hear is that Bebo is not very keen to be part of the project. She thinks that the film is very similar to Milan Luthria’s The Dirty Picture which has Vidya Balan playing a siren from the south. Now this pretty woman wants to avoid any sort of comparisons with Vidya Balan. Heroine’s story is about a top actress who is at a low phase of her career and fighting the fate on her own.

SRK:

I am Germany’s adopted son

Salman Khan sizzles with Bollywood beauties SRK in a recent interview compared himself to legendary Raj Kapoor who was not only loved in India but also in Russia. SRK who is going to shoot in Germany also feels the same. Talking about his connection with Berlin, SRK says, “Hundreds of people stood on the road in the snow, they treat me like a German star, and they respect and love me… like the energy I bring on the screen has filled up some void in their mechanised lives. I’m their adopted son, like Raj Kapoor was to Russia, it is a very humbling experience.” SRK is going to shoot in Berlin for the sequel of Don, he says, I’m excited to be shooting in Berlin, I like the darkness of the buildings, the starkness of the winter, people dressed in overcoats and wearing mufflers and dark glasses, and black cars going around.” Apparently SRK will be a complete meanie and a bad guy in the sequel of Don.

Salman Khan’s Being Human shows are always known for its star power, last year he had the likes of Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan walking for him along with Katrina Kaif, this year he had all his female co-stars till date walking with him on the ramp. Accompanying Salman Khan this year on the ramp where Bollywood beauties - Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherjee, Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu, Karishma Kapoor, Sushmita Sen, Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor. Everyone invited to Shilpa and Now Deepika Padukone is ready to Race Raj’s Diwali party, except Akki

C

ard parties around Diwali are big in B-town. Every actor wants his/her taash party to be the best. Each year, dates are planned and announced in a rush before the social calendar is filled up. This year, there is a new entrant Shilpa Shetty and husband Raj Kundra. The couple who will be celebrating their first Diwali together at their new Juhu bungalow want to kick start the card parties by hosting the first one. The Kundras started telling industry folk to block the date weeks ago. Everyone from Khans to the Kapoors have been invited. The only couple that has been left out of the guest list are Akshay Kumar and Twinkle, even though they live a mere hundred metres away.

“Shilpa Shetty and husband Raj to host the first Diwali card party of the season in their new home PS: All of B-Town biggies invited. Except Akshay Kumar.”

Housewarming bash

Says a source close to the couple, “This party is actually a housewarming bash. It’s just that around Diwali, everyone is in the mood to play card games, so they decided to have that as well.” The bungalow got ready only recently.

Even though the couple have moved in, the shifting of furniture, artefacts, paintings etc from their old home, is still underway. It is learnt that Shilpa is juggling the process of nestling in and planning her Diwali party simultaneously. The source continues, “They have been stressed over the dropping of their team Rajasthan Royals from IPL and they want to put all the ugliness behind them. Having a house full of friends and well-wishers is Shilpa’s way of bringing in peace and harmony into her new home.” The house-proud Mrs Kundra can’t wait to show off her skills as a super hostess. The guest list includes Shah Rukh-Gauri, Sanjay Dutt-Maanayata, The Bachchan family, Ameesha Patel, Salman Khan, Rani Mukerji, Kangna Ranaut and Sajid Nadiadwala-Wardha. The surprise invitees are Raveena Tandon Thadani (and hubby Anil) whom Shilpa met and recently bonded with at a filmi party. Both actresses have dated Akshay Kumar in the past. It looks like they are ready to let bygones be bygones. Clearly that does not apply to Khiladi Kumar.

D

eepika Padukone, the Om Shanti Om, gal has indeed traveled a long way from her debutant days. The gal has proved that hard work and perseverance are two of the most crucial keys to success. As the hot bod star has managed to capture hearts of the audiences with her steering performances in most of her flicks after ‘OSO’, she is slowly but steadily managing to get a strong foothold in the industry. Films like Bachchna Ae Haseeno, Love Aaj Kal, Karthik calling Karthik, Houseful, etc have shown her the path to become quite an established star and her forth coming flicks like Break Ke Baad, and Khelein Hum Jee Jaan se are quite promising too, going by the various reports doing the rounds. However, to add another feather to her almost feathered cap is the news that she is being considered to be a part of the super hit Abbas Mastan flick Race sequel, titled Race 2. Well, considering that the flick Race, was a super duper hit with female stars like Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, Sameera Reddy, along with their male counter parts like Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, it is being anticipated that a new cast in the sequel is being

panned and it is quite a matter of a challenging proposition to be able to beat the heart beating experience in Race. However, the fact that Priyanka Chopra was to be cast in the sequel Race2 is now being considered to a thing of the past, as Deepika and Kareena are now expected to be the ones to bag the roles as the female protagonists. Well, with Deepika on the road to capture the Race2 role, the road to becoming the number one star is perhaps getting less rocky for her!

However, he might soon be served a legal notice on his prolonged unexplained absence from his service with the police force. Khali has been on an extended “leave of absence” to wrestle for WWE and fi lm movies in the U.S. “He has been making money and misusing the leave allowed to him,” said Kadyan. “He must be terminated with immediate effect. ‘Batman 3’ Titles We Like More Than ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ his morning, Christopher Nolan announced the name of his next Batman film -- The Dark Knight Rises. Talk about BORING. Here’s our list of 10 alternate title suggestions. Take note, nerds! Gotham: Simple, elegant, and to the point. Gotham was the rumored name among fanboys since the film’s announcement, and still sticks out as the best of the bunch. Redemption: After the depressing conclusion of The Dark Knight, when Batman becomes the enemy of Gotham, Redemption offers him a chance to do just that -- and to be what Gotham needs: a hero. Shadow of the Bat: Out of all our suggestions, this one definitely feels the most “Nolan-esque.” It gives a sense of mystery and curiosity -- something Nolan is a master of. Plus it was the title of a particularly gritty and psychologically exploratory series of Batman comics, which also matches the tone of Nolan’s Gotham City. The Caped Crusader: A classic moniker that would bring the vigilante back to his roots. It doesn’t sound as cool as The Dark Knight, but then again, neither does The Dark Knight Rises. The Batman: Think about the progression: from Batman Begins to The Dark Knight and finally, The Batman. A short, yet poignant title that completes the growth of our favorite superhero from Gotham’s savior to the feared murderer of its “White Knight,” and ending finally as its legendary champion.

Spain players lead FIFA Ballon d’Or list W

orld Cup winners Spain have seven players in a 23man shortlist for the FIFA Ballon d’Or, unveiled by soccer’s governing body and France Football magazine on Tuesday. A Spaniard last won the coveted prize in 1960 when Luis Suarez triumphed, and included in this year’s list is Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta, who netted the only goal in extra-time to defeat the Netherlands in the final. Barcelona have six players in the list, four of them Spanish including David Villa, who joined from Valencia during the close season.

Last year’s Ballon d’Or victor Lionel Messi of Argentina is also there as La Liga emerged as the most represented league in the list with 11 players. The Premier League only has three players in the shortlist, none of them English, and Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan of Sunderland actually played the whole 2009/10 season at Stade Rennes in Ligue 1. Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, who had an indifferent World Cup, is not in the list. No French players are on the list, following France’s fiasco in South Africa, where Les Bleus were

knocked out in the group stage and went on strike to protest against the exclusion of Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka after he had insulted then coach Raymond Domenech. Champions League winners Inter Milan have four players on the list. The winner will be announced on Jan. 10, 2011 in Zurich. Ten managers, including four national coaches, were nominated for the coach of the year award. The gong, formerly known as the European Footballer of the Year award, is voted on by journalists from across the world.

Bhutia to launch football school for underprivileged children In his 15 years of international career, Bhaichung Bhutia has brought many laurels to the country. Now, the Indian football icon is now launching a football school, to teach the sport to underprivileged children free of cost. The Indian football captain is launching the Bhaichung Bhutia Football School in New Delhi on October 30, to teach football basics to school children, of which 30 per cent will be from the underprivileged sections of the society. The football school has tied up with the Carlos Queiroz academy in Portugal, which will provide two coaches to train the children all through the year. Queiroz, the former national coach of Portugal and South Africa, is famous for his work towards development of football at the grassroot and youth level. He has also authored books

Bhaichung Bhutia and documentaries about the power of football as a positive force for social change. Bhaichubg Bhutia”It will be a non-residential school and I will get a ground in Delhi on lease. 30 per cent of children will be from

underprivileged section and the other 70 per cent will have to pay fees. There will be tie-ups with some schools and NGOs to get the children. For the underprivileged ones, NGOs like Magic Bus will provide them,” Bhaichung said. “This will be the first school in the country and I am looking to spread it in other parts of the country in future. Noida, Mumbai and Bangalore are the places I am looking at for such schools in the near future, provided I get the land,” he said. Asked how the idea to start such a school came to him, Bhaichung said, “All over the world lots of children are interested in football. Even street children play football. The only thing is that they don’t have proper grounds and they are not organised. In a way it is good

that underprivileged children in the country will get to play football.” “It will not be a school which will be run to provide professional football but one which will encourage children to take up football and enjoy it. They will also learn the basics of football. The talented ones will be drafted into the professional academy, which I am opening in Kolkata and Sikkim with (Bollywood actor) John Abraham,” he added. Bhaichung said the Carlos Queiroz Academy will provide two coaches for 360 days to teach football basics to the children. “Carlos Queiroz is a guy known for grassroot and youth football in Portugal, United States and Manchester United. I have tied up with his academy. His academy is providing two coaches from Portugal to train the children in Delhi for 360 days,” said Bhutia.

INSOMNIA AYURVEDIC TREATMENT

>> Dr. C.R.S. Kumar

AN AYURVEDIC VIEW AND TIPS OF HEALTHY CYCLE

What is Insomnia?

Types of Insomnia:

Insomnia is a very common condition in which you have trouble falling or staying asleep. This condition can range from mild to severe, depending on how often it occurs and for how long. Insomnia can be chronic (ongoing) or acute (short-term). Chronic insomnia means having symptoms at least 3 nights a week for more than a month. Acute insomnia lasts for less time. Some people who have insomnia may have trouble falling asleep. Other people may fall asleep easily but wake up too soon.

Medically there are two different types of Insomnia: Primary Insomnia and Secondary Insomnia. Primary Insomnia is mainly caused due to chronic stress and emotional problems, whereas, secondary Insomnia is mainly due the side effect of drugs, medical problems or medicines or substance abuse.

Others may have trouble with both falling asleep and staying asleep. As a result, insomnia may cause you to get too little sleep or have poor-quality sleep. You may not feel refreshed when you wake up (NHLBI 2009). According to Ayurveda, insomnia is a classic sign of imbalance in the body. If this imbalance is not corrected, it can cause many further complications.

According to Ayurveda, the following are the general types of imbalances at the source of most chronic conditions, including insomnia: 1. Toxins accumulating in tissues and blocking circulation. 2. Poor nutrition. 3. Poor digestion. 4. Imbalance of the nervous system. 5. Accumulation of physical and mental stress. 6. Lowering of natural resistance and immunity. 7. Disruption of natural biological rhythms.

Ayurveda, the “Science of Life,” provides a clear, concise, cohesive regimen to help people correct conditions such as insomnia in a natural way. Yet it is much more than just very effective holistic treatments. It provides a complete system of preventive medicine and health care which has proven its effectiveness over thousands of years in India.

The common modern medical approach that matches drugs to symptoms does not completely address many of these factors. As a result, modern medicine often cannot fully remove the disorder and the condition becomes chronic. Whereas, Ayurvedic treatments mainly address the root cause (Nidhana Primarjana: Root cause elimination).

Few Ayurvedic Better Sleep:

Tips

for

Sleep in a dark room with calm and quiet environment. Your body works on natural clock. Therefore, fix a proper time and routine like listening to soft music, reading etc. before your everyday snooze. This helps to signal the body and makes it ready for sleep. Do regular physical activity by doing exercise, Yoga or pranayam will be highly beneficial. Limit your intake of caffeine. Reduce having oily, spicy and heavy to digest meals before going to bed. Take care not to take a long nap during afternoons as this might keep you awake in the night. Try not to take worries to bed and also refrain from staring at the darkness if you’re unable to sleep. It is better to go to another room and try any creative activity like reading. Go to bed only when you actually feel sleepy.

What clients say? My name is XXXXXXX and I have been suffering with Insomnia since long time. Not getting enough sleep can make your life miserable. As a long time sufferer of insomnia, I know what it’s like to go for days with little to no sleep. As

exhausted as you feel, as soon as you lay down in bed your brain suddenly clicks into the ‘on’ position, and you find yourself racing over thoughts and concerns you didn’t even know you had.

Living a Healthy Life Through Your Diet

L

ifestyle options are personal and if no attention is paid to them can sometimes lead to our own downfall. When it comes to the rationale for dieting we find that they are many and they vary. However, persons get involved because of the focus on their own health and we could say their well being. Sometimes eating habits which need to be changed are not seen as such until there is some critical health problem. It is difficult for a number of persons to just decide on change because of the number of years they have spent in the particular habit. On other occasions the habit is developed because of stress or perhaps an addiction. While the over-indulgent eating has become a lifestyle for some, the dieting is a lifestyle for others. People literally go on one diet today and tomorrow

they are on to another. This shows a certain amount of desperation and the unwillingness to wait and see the results of something started. The major thing which a number of persons must accept is that dieting in itself is not always good for them. They really need to realize that it is a lifestyle change in daily activities which is going to show positive results. There are a number o ways in which people can get helpful physical exercise without for an additional two or so hour in the day. One could walk a little brisker on any errands he/she has, one could walk the longer way around a block to get to where he/she is going or one could use the stairs instead of elevators. If one prefers to choose a form of exercise which is more fun, then dancing could be considered and this can be organized to suit the

HOW TO GET A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP Sometimes, getting a good night’s sleep is not easy. We may toss and turn, or even wake up during the night and then find it next to impossible to get back to sleep. This article will help you know how to get a good night’s sleep. You would be surprised to know that diet plays a major factor. There are certain foods that can affect your sleep. For instance, large quantities of food in the evening cause heartburn and stomach trouble – this problem worsens if you lie down. So avoid rich, fatty or greasy foods, and stay away from spicy foods, as the stomach needs time to digest these, and may keep you awake. Avoid drinking too much fluid prior to bedtime, you will find yourself waking up wanting to go to the bathroom. Also avoid alcohol; because in the long run it affects you sleep pattern and causes frequent awakenings. You should also avoid caffeine in the evening – not just coffee,

but also caffeinated sodas, caffeinated chocolate, and certain teas. You need a relaxed, consisted routine every time to help you get to sleep. Do something that relaxes you. Put on some soothing classical music, take a warm bath, or indulge in some quiet reading. You might even try Yoga as a relaxation exercise. Avoid anything that causes stress and anxiety. The suitable thing to do is prepare for sleep – by trying visualization/ medication, knitting, doing a jigsaw puzzle, reading something light, listening to soft music, etc. Avoid anxiety, worrying, and stress – your sleep-time should be characterized by peace and quiet. Avoid upsetting news; quiet your mind with simple activities like getting your clothes ready for the next day, or making a list of things to do. You would be surprised at how much more relaxed and sleepy you feel.

persons involved. This can include the persons you want and can be done at the time of day of one’s choice. It is important to note that dieting by itself cannot reduce weight. The physical activity to burn calories must be included. Walking is good, but some people consider it boring. If however, a walking club is considered one gets encouragement as well as fun and company. One needs to realize that during the hour or so that is spent walking, the fridge and the other snack containers are out of sight and therefore one is not tempted to eat unnecessarily. These new habits, if they are acquired, can bring about great improvement in weight loss. It is a well known fact that some people are not disciplined enough to give new found physical activities enough time to work and give up

Sometimes people are indeed making progress, but because it is not as obvious as they would like, they are not satisfied and just stop. Weight loss is not an overnight thing and people interested in loosing weight must be willing to persevere in order to succeed. It is not advisable to constantly watch the scale as there is hardly any significant change that will take place overnight and this has been the reason for a number of persons giving up. This

has led to depression in the past which is no good for anyone. Dieters please note that it is the changes one makes in the physical activity in one’s life that is likely to bring about the change in the weight loss. It is also important to note that persistence is the key. In other word, choose a physical life style which you are comfortable with ( dancing, walking, tennis, swimming) and watch the desired changes come about for you.

How to Make Kids Eat Vegetables A

s parents, we try to give our kids healthy diets, but unfortunately this is not always as easy as it should be. Kids like their sweets, and they don’t have much patience for foods that, while being healthy, may not taste so great. You can even try to explain to them why they should eat certain things, but they’re not likely to listen to reason. As adults, we’re capable of making smart decisions about what’s healthy and what’s not, but kids don’t think this way. They like things that taste good. And children do need vegetables. According to most government authorities, children need to have around three or four servings per day, and it’s best if these servings include multiple types of vegetables. If you’ve been having trouble getting your children to follow these guidelines, don’t give up. Here are some tips to keep in mind: Start early: Studies have shown that the earlier kids start eating

vegetables, the more likely they are to enjoy eating vegetables later on. In fact, according to one study, this starts even when the child is in the womb. Mothers who eat vegetables when pregnant and, later, when breastfeeding are more likely to raise kids who enjoy eating vegetables. Have persistence: Other studies have shown that, while children may reject vegetables at first, the more time they try a given vegetable the more they will accept it. So even if your child insists on being stubborn about eating that broccoli, keep serving it, and he or she will eventually come around. Make vegetables more fun: There are many ways to make eating vegetables more than just a boring chore. For example, serve multiple different colors of vegetables, and encourage your child to “eat the rainbow” on a daily basis. In fact, this is a good practice for all of us.

Eat what you serve: We cannot overestimate the importance of setting a positive example. If you encourage your child to eat a certain food but don’t consume it yourself, this is obviously not the best form of encouragement. Rather than having different meals for parents and children, eat as a family. Everyone should get the same foods. Let the child participate: Many young children will jump at the opportunity to make grown-up decisions such as what vegetables to have for dinner. Try collaborating with your child on the food decisions. Let your child help plan meals based on the healthy food pyramid, and make whatever tweaks to the meal that you think are necessary.

EYE PROBLEMS IN CHILDREN Homeopathic Help >> Raj Kothuru

A

child’s overall health and development certainly comprises good eye sight. A child with good vision generally performs well at school and has good reading confidence. Great importance has to be placed in the eye health of children as very young children have trouble identifying and communicating their eye problems. Early detection of eye problems, as in any other disease will help prevent further deterioration. WHAT IS EYE SIGHT? Eyesight is simply the ability to see something clearly, the so-called 20/20 eyesight. Vision is the ability of the eye to see something clearly and translate it into an image that can be comprehended and interpreted by the brain. IMPORTANCE TO CHILDREN: Out of a child’s learning content, around 75% to 90% comes via visual pathways. Any interference to this visual pathway due to problems of the eye, a child will not develop to his maximum potential. CHILDREN”S EYE PROBLEMS: Although serious diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration

are not as common in the young as they are in adults, numerous eye diseases that demand medical care affect children. The common pink eye or conjunctivitis is the most common and is caused by viral or bacterial infection. Mucous surrounds the eyes and the lines inside the eyelid. The common cold can also cause some eye infections. Myopia (shortsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness) are common errors in eyeball shape that result in blurry vision and difficulty reading. Astigmatism, caused by irregularly shaped corneas, often causes similar problems; all three are frequently treated with eyeglasses or contact lenses. Lazy eye (amblyopia) and crossed eyes (strabismus) can both reduce vision quality and detract from a child’s physical appearance. Normal routine checkups are very important from time to time, to ensure that the child’s eye health is normal and any eye problems are detected at the right time. It is important to note that vision defects of most people do not stabilize until they are at least 18 years of age; hence permanent corrective surgery is not an option for children or teenagers..

HOW TO IDENTIFY EYE PROBLEMS IN A CHILD: Parents have to look out for symptoms or clues of eye problems as children amy not be able to express them correctly. The following may be considered as indications for eye problems. Child rubbing eyes excessively, complaints of tired eyes or headaches, indications of eye strain, sensitivity to light, squinting or excessive tearing when entering bright areas, sitting too close to the television, falling grades and decreased motivation to read, frequent head tilting, difficulty discerning colors or objects etc are classic symptoms. MEDICAL HELP: Problems such as long sight, short sight etc can be controlled with medical examination and glasses. However, reduction of sight is not possible in most cases. Homeopathy can help control further progress of the condition when integrated with diet, yoga and prayanama. Other diseases of the eye such as infections, bruising, black eyes, bleeding, eye socket injuries, injury to the soft tissue surrounding the eyes, dry eyes, excessively painful eyes or blood shot eyes or any nervous affliction of the eyelids or eyes, such as excessive blinking. eyeball injuries, eyestrain, computer eyes, work stress, painful, red, hot eyes, headache due

to eyestrain, eye allergies, strange sensations, eye pressure etc can be effectively treated by Homeopathy. Homeopathy not only reduces the healing time in such infections, but also prevents further recurrence of such ailments and ensures that the child’s eye health is in good condition. LIFE STYLE HELP: Eye exercises are important and should be included as a daily fun activity for the entire family. Taking regular breaks every half hour from the computer is essential. Also drink plenty of water and blink often to keep eyes hydrated. Eyes feel nourished with foods like coconuts, raisins, papaya and sweet juicy fruits, foods rich in Beta Carotene

such as carrots, leafy vegetables etc. Reduce your intake of sugar. Avoid red meat and heavy fried foods. Some yoga asanas, like Shirshasana and Surya Namaskara asana and in particular Trataka are very beneficial for eyesthey boost circulation to the blood vessels and capillaries, relax the eyes, and, over a period of time, are reported to even improve vision.
