CVC appointment was an error of judgement: Manmohan Singh W
ith the Supreme Court sacking PJ Thomas as the CVC, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today described his appointment as an “error of judgement” and told the Lok Sabha that he accepts “full responsibility” for it. He said the government respects the Supreme Court’s verdict and would consider the guidelines given by it in appointing a new central vigilance commissioner. “I have no hesitation in repeating what I said in Jammu. Obviously, there was an error of judgement. I accept full responsibility for it,” Singh said. He stated this when Opposition created an uproar after his suo motu statement had no mention about responsibility and contained only the sequence of events beginning from the appointment of Thomas as the central vigilance commissioner and its annulment by the Supreme Court last week. In his statement earlier, Singh said, “We accept and respect the verdict” of the Supreme Court on March 3 and that the government would take into consideration the court’s guidelines/ directions while appointing a new CVC.
“I have no hesitation in repeating what I said in Jammu. Obviously, there was an error of judgement. I accept full responsibility for it,” Singh said. He noted that the meeting of the committee comprising the prime minister, the home minister and Leader of the Opposition to choose the CVC took place on September 3 last year and recommended the name of Thomas for the post. Leader of the opposition Sushma Swaraj gave a dissenting note, Singh recalled. After Thomas’s appointment, two public interest litigation petitions were filed in the Supreme Court challenging the appointment and the court quashed it, he said. As he sat down after reading out the statement, the opposition members vociferously expressed dissatisfaction. Swaraj said she was “surprised” that the prime minister had not
said even what he had stated in Jammu on Friday last about owning up responsibility for the CVC appointment. “The statement made by you today is different from what you said in Jammu.... I was expecting that you would say the same thing in Parliament (what was said in Jammu), that you will own responsibility (for CVC appointment),” she said. The leader of opposition noted that in Jammu, the prime minister had said that during a long tenure, some mistakes do take place and the appointment of CVC was one such mistake. “I had immediately responded after that statement. I had said that the matter should end now. But I am surprised that you did not say here even one of those things which you said outside. You should say in the House whatever you said outside,” she said amid chants of ‘shame shame’ by her party colleagues. Left parties were not satisfied by the prime minister’s contention that it was an “error of judgement”. Basudeb Acharia [(CPI(M)] said the prime minister should explain how the error occurred. There was no response to this and finally, the Left members staged a walkout.

Gaddafi wants immunity, cash from rebels to quit Libya: report
L
ondon: Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has hinted that he is ready to quit Libya after 41 years in power, only if the rebel interim council gives him a pile of cash and assures him immunity from criminal prosecution, a media report said. The dictator is said to have proposed a meeting of the Libyan Parliament to agree a transition period to pave the way for him to step down. His terms include immunity from criminal prosecution and a pile of cash, Britain’s ‘Daily Mail’ quoted Arabic TV network ‘Al Jazeera’. However, the rebel interim council, based in eastern city of Benghazi, reportedly rejected the offer because such an “honourable” exit would offend Colonel Gaddafi’s victims, the report said. Colonel Gaddafi allegedly sent Jadallah Azzouz Talhi, a former prime minister, to meet the rebels to work out the fine print of a deal. The offer proposed the dictator would hand over power to a committee formed by General People’s Congress.

46% Indian credit card users worry about frauds
N
ew Delhi: Nearly half of the Indian plastic money users are extremely concerned about frauds in case, payments are done through credit or debit cards, while 73 per cent are left shaken by media reports of such incidents, says a survey. With 46 per cent respondents ‘extremely’ concerned about frauds related to payments through cards, consumers consider them as their biggest financial security concern, according to the Visa Payment Card Security Study. Besides, a majority of respondents (73 per cent) said that reading about media reports of such frauds bothers them more than that of their personal experience, the report added. The study found that consumers in India take a highly proactive approach to enhance security, while making electronic payments both in person and online. As per the study, 37 per cent respondents use different passwords for different purposes. 51 per cent change their password regularly as a prevention measure than anything else and 41 per cent change passwords once a month or more.

ew Delhi: President Pratibha Patil said that social prejudices against women still exist in the country despite legal provisions and favoured imparting judo-karate skills to girl students to protect themselves. “Women have to face many kinds of challenges and discrimination because of prevalent social prejudices and ills. These social evils are hindering country’s progress and despite laws against them, they are still being practised,” Patil said on the International Women’s Day here. slamabad: The mutual friends of Pakistan and India, including Britain, should urge New Delhi to take steps to resolve outstanding issues to create a favourable environment for addressing the “core issue” of Kashmir, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said today. Gilani made the remarks during his talks with visiting British National Security Advisor Peter Ricketts and Chief of Defence Staff David Richards. Inter-Services Intelligence agency chief Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha and Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar were also present at the meeting. The mutual friends of the two countries, like the UK, should “urge India to move towards the resolution of issues like Siachen and Sir Creek, which could greatly boost mutual confidence and create a favourable environment for addressing the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir”, Gilani told the
British delegation. He said Pakistan desires friendly relations with India and now that the two countries had agreed to resume their dialogue process, it “was his earnest hope that the process would be sustained and made irreversible in the interest of achieving tangible results”.
Islamabad and New Delhi recently agreed to resume their peace process, which was stalled after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The bilateral dialogue will get underway with a meeting of the Home and Interior Secretaries to be held in New Delhi during March 28-29.

Government should encourage bio-fuel programmes T
he University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) in Bangalore and Dharwad have embarked on a mission to promote bio-fuel among farmers by planting 1.1 crore seeds across the state, in the last five years. Narayan Gowda, vice-chancellor of GKVK, on Monday said the Rs125 crore announced in the state budget for bio-fuel programme is a major boost to the farming community. However, he said that since the plantation season begins in May-June, they would like farmers to start thinking about crop and land allocation for bio-fuel seeds during this period. “Bio-fuel plantation can help in supplementing income for farmers and it is a way of creating a lot of employment in the rural areas,” said Gowda. He said that there is a feeling among the farming community that bio-fuel plantation will affect food production. “Only the land that is
not utilised for food crops should be used for bio-fuel seeds. There is no encroachment on the land meant for food crops. Contribution to the energy basket is important, but not at the cost of food production,” he said.
Karnataka is leading in the production of bio- fuel with 10 lakh seeds every year. Currently, bio- fuel is being produced right from the first stage.

The company’s official was quoted as saying that in another two-three years, the car might be launched in the European market. Going by Ratan Tata’s belief that making cars for a particular
market is no longer in existence, the company seems to speed up the export process. The Tata Nano was somewhat successful in the Indian market expect that it had fire accident related problems. This cannot be taken lightly in case of European launch as safety standards are utmost priority. It is noteworthy that earlier, Ratan Tata had said that the Nano Europa
would be launched around 2011. Now the two years delay might be because of the car’s engine catching fire. The Nano Europa version has better features than the one for Indian market. It sports leather seats, stereo systems in the vehicle and there are two airbags, which is not available in Tata Nano’s Indian version. Plus there is a three-cylinder engine as against two in the Indian vehicle.

Should mercy killing be legal in India? D
eprived of her senses after a sexual attack by a ward boy in November 1973, Aruna Shaunbag, a former nurse with Mumbai‘s King Edward Medical College and Hospital (KEM), has been suffering the agony of life for the last 37 years. The sexual assault has left her almost brain dead. None of her relatives are there to support her – all of them deserted her long ago. The staff of KEM, where she has been lying in a vegetative state for over three-and-a-half decades, is taking good care of her all this while. Pinki Virani, a journalist and Aruna’s friend, who published a book titled ‘Aruna’s Story’ had filed a petition in the Supreme Court for euthanasia or mercy killing for the hapless woman. Though the Supreme Court reserved its verdict on euthanasia, it’s very much predicted that the apex body would rule against the petition. The Centre too has rejected the Law Commission’s recommendation to
allow terminally ill patients to end their lives. SC to pronounce verdict on Monday in euthanasia killing row Terming it as a sensitive issue, the Centre commented that Indian laws did not permit mercy killing. During the arguments, the apex court said that if it was allowed, then there was a possibility of misuse of the law. ”Suppose a person meets an accident and goes into coma, then his/her immediate relatives may resort to euthanasia to grab his/her property, ” the Supreme Court suggested. One may think that it would be natural justice if the Supreme Court grants Aruna, who is oblivious about her existence, a dignified exit from her agonising life. While her tormentor walked free after a 7-year jail term, Aruna Shaunbag is yet to be freed. Her excruciating plight has led many intellectuals to demand the legalisation of euthanasia in our country. India is an emotional country, unlike a few Western countries where mercy killing is allowed. If it’s permitted here, I’m sure that there will be negative repercussions all over. Aruna’s is not the lone case to have come up for euthanasia. We have had similar cases in the past
when the government disapproved of mercy killing. I strongly believe that just as we have the right to live, we should have the right to die also. The victim himself or his/her relatives can appeal for euthanasia. And the best person to decide on that would be the doctor involved. Considering the medical status of the person, he or she can decide whether the person has any chance of survival or not. And to ensure it’s not misused, the government or the apex court can set up a committee to oversee the whole procedure. I agree life is a gift of God and most will consider mercy killing as inhuman and cruel. But what if a person suffering from chronic illness undergoes agonising pain day after day without any hope of recuperating? The court’s ruling saying ‘sorry….we are Indians!’ won’t provide any relief for the suffering. Coming back to Aruna’s case, there has been no hue and cry over her pitiful condition as if she is a forgotten chapter. Will she be set free of her suffering or will it be another affliction for her? The whole of India awaits the apex court ruling.

Black money case: Enforcement directorate arrests Hassan Ali Khan P
une businessman Hassan Ali Khan, accused of massive money laundering and tax evasion, was arrested by the enforcement directorate (ED) by the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The ED carried out multi-city searches at his Pune home and his associates’ premises, cracking the whip to meet tomorrow’s Supreme Court deadline. Hot in pursuit of black money trail after the apex court rap on the government, about a dozen ED officials from Mumbai came down to Pune to search the premises of Khan in posh Koregaon Park area this morning. He was later taken to Mumbai where the ED officials grilled him till late in the night. “I am innocent. I haven’t done anything wrong,” he told reporters before entering the ED office. Sources said searches were carried out at the premises of Khan and his associates at Pune, Mumbai, Gurgaon, Kolkata and Hyderabad. In Kolkata, searches were conducted at the residence of businessman Kashinath Taparia. ED sources told PTI Taparia was an alleged aide of Khan but Taparia claimed he had no “partnership” with him at all. ED sources said the statement of Khan’s associate and hotelier Philip

Anand Raj was being recorded in Delhi. Khan’s lawyer RK Gaur said he is being taken to ED’s Mumbai office for further interrogation and to possibly confront him with “some documents.” Gaur however claimed Khan has not been detained and that he was being taken to the ED’s office as part of a “routine investigation”. There was no official word from the ED and media persons waiting outside Khan’s residence were not briefed about the searches. Khan, clad in white kurta and wearing sunglasses, was seen inside a black Mercedes that left the Tulip bungalow located in Pune’s Valentine Residential Society escorted by ED sleuths in two cars. Khan’s detention came on the eve of the Supreme Court’s March 8 deadline to the government to inform it how it proposed to tackle black money hoarders. In Kolkata, regional director of ED B Mallick told PTI, “We raided the premises of Kashinath Taparia and his wife this morning and found something”. Taparia is brother of late Priyamvada Birla. Both the Taparias were present at the time of the raids, Mallick said. Taparia later said he had handed over some old documents which he had intimated to the ED.
The Supreme Court while blasting the Centre last Thursday for not having the “will power” to act against black money hoarders asked why Khan and others were not subjected to custodial interrogation despite the
probe agencies possessing sufficient material against them. The court while asking “What the hell is going on in this country?” told the government to inform it by March 8 what action it was taking
against Khan and other alleged black money hoarders. The previous searches at Khan’s Koregaon home were in January 2007 when the income tax department had raided the premises.

Washington: Believe it or not -- the more honest and humble an employee is, the better is his or her job performance, according to a new study. ‘This study shows that those who possess the combination of honesty and humility have better job performance,’ said study leader Wade Rowatt, associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor University in the US. Baylor researchers surveyed 269 employees in 25 companies across 20 states in the US who provide health care for challenging clients, the journal Personality and Individual Differences reports. PS: Also has a third role in the English version If the name Alexx O’Nell rings no bells, it’s probably because his only claim to fame used to be being Shweta Keswani’s firang husband. Who’s she? Well, don’t blame you for not knowing that she’s a TV actress who used to work in primetime soaps. Getting back to O’Nell, the reason we’re even bringing him up in conversation, is because he plays a double role in Santosh Sivan’s multilingual, Urumi. The period film is noteworthy for bringing together the likes of Tabu, Vidya Balan (it’s her first South film), Prabhudeva, Arya and Prithviraj all veritable and proven talents together in one film. Alexx plays the object of their hatred, Vasco da Gama. He began shooting in September 2010. Set in colonial times, the flick showcases an attempt by locals to assassinate the legendary explorer. An apparently impressed Sivan even gave the firang actor a triple role in a shorter, abridged version in English that will make it to the festivals. It will have a different storyline. So why is Da Gama so hated? The actor reveals, “After reading a great deal about Vasco, I was shocked to
learn how terribly ruthless he was and equally appalled at the fame and glory that’s attached to the name. My characters in Urumi are Vasco and his son Estavio Da Gama, a man who’d eventually become India’s viceroy.” Interestingly, this isn’t O’Nell’s first foray into South films. He played a significant role in another period flick, a Tamil hit called Madrasapattinam. Any language troubles this time around? He says, “Though Urumi is mostly in Malayalam and Tamil, I speak Portuguese so no, I didn’t
have to struggle with Malayalam. However, Portuguese isn’t easy either!” Ask him if he has big expectations from the film and he says that with several of his films releasing this year, including Chittagong, Urumi, Vasco Da Gama (the English version of Urumi) and Shirish Kunder’s Joker, he has no expectations about what they will or will not do for him. “I just want to make great films!” he quips. Urumi (in Malayalam and Tamil) releases March 31 nationwide.

ew Delhi: (IANS) Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and his manager Maroof Ali were Sunday fined Rs.1.5 million ($33,000) each for carrying undeclared foreign currency while trying to leave India earlier this month, sources said. The artiste and his manager, who were charged under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and Customs Act, will have to pay the fine immediately to have their passports and other documents returned. Rahat and his 16member troupe was detained at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport Feb 13 for carrying $142,000 in cash and cheques when they were going to catch a flight to Dubai for onward journey to Karachi. Rahat was released Feb 14 after hours of questioning by officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. As per norms, no one can carry beyond $5,000 in cash and $5,000 in other instruments. The person has to declare the amount if he is carrying more than this to the Customs Department. The duo is expected to return to Lahore later in the day after they get back their passports. Rahat, the nephew of legendary singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, is popular both in India and Pakistan. Several of his hit songs from Indian films are a rage on both sides of the border, for which he has won several awards, including the recent Filmfare award for “Dil to Bacha Hai Ji”.

Europe key for financial markets
The major driver of the currencies market last year was the crisis occurring over in Europe. For most of the last 18 months, investors have become increasingly concerned over the financial health of some of Europe’s largest economies.
It all begins in Greece
The initial concerns developed early in 2010 as worries about the fiscal position of Greece started to generate heat in the markets. Once Greece was bailed out by the European governments, Ireland was the next country to start to look unsteady. While Ireland has now been rescued, there remain concerns about even larger economies, including both Spain and Italy.
PIGS become STUPID
However, the debt-laden European countries, known as the PIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain) slowly changed into the STUPID (Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, Portugal, Ireland, Dubai). If countries like Spain and Italy are also forced to the wall, then it is conceivable that we might even see the Euro zone split up. This would be preceded by steep falls in the value of the Euro. So, from this perspective, there’s little wonder why the Euro has been one of the worst performing currencies last year!
A tortuous journey
The Euro started 2010 at US$1.43 and fell all the way to US$1.19 in the middle of the year as the crisis reached its nadir for the year. By the end of the last year, however, the Euro had staged a recovery, finishing 2010 at $1.30. The Euro has started the new year in an even stronger position. Earlier in January, the Japanese government said it was willing to buy some of the distressed debt offered by European governments. This saw a strong gain in the Euro in the first month of this year. In fact, the Euro is up almost 10% since the Japanese government made their announcement.
Where to from here?
The fate of the Euro, the most traded currency apart from the US dollar, is now up for debate by analysts and traders alike. In general, the market has become more positive toward the Euro as key government raise funds in the debt markets and economic growth improves. However, there are plenty of people that still warn about the fate of the Euro. One person who remains nervous about Europe is world-famous hedge fund manager George Soros. Soros recently warned that the European Union might disintegrate as a result of the European debt crisis. But whatever happens, we are guaranteed to have an exciting year for forex traders.

(Reuters Life!) - Workers at a Google data center combined 12 century know how and space age technology to trigger a medieval weapon that was used to hurl rocks, balls of fire and dead animals over castle walls. They used an Android cellphone, a computer the size of a credit card and a Blue Tooth receiver to trigger the wooden weapon, known as a trebuchet, during the first “Storm the Citadel Trebuchet Competition” in Charleston over the weekend. The trebuchet was used during medieval times to break down fortifications. “They also threw dead people,” said Dennis Fallon, dean of engineering at The Citadel, a military college with about 2,100 male and female cadets. “What we have done in military history is not always something to be proud of.” More powerful than the ballistas and catapults of ancient empires, the trebuchet used a long swing arm, triggered by the pull of gravity on a counterweight placed

Emmy president meets Roadies is a thankless members of Indian TV job: Raghu Ram industry

umbai, (IANS) Bruce Paisner, president of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the body behind Emmy Awards, visited India early this month and met television broadcast CEOs, producers and actors to get to know the nitty-grity of the Indian TV industry during his four-day trip. Paisner was here Feb 5-8 and was hosted by Anil Wanvari, indiantelevision.com founder and International Academy Board member. He was in India on a private visit, but also wanted to get the feel of Indian television industry to raise awareness, explore partnerships and increase participation to The International Emmys. Indiantelevision.com has been associated with The International Emmys for the past eight years now and has annually hosted semifinal judging rounds in India for the past six years with an all Indian jury. “So far the industry has been very responsive by judging the semi final round of the international rounds

over the past six years through indiantelevision.com. We are hopeful that participation from India’s talented TV community will go up now with Paisner’s visit, as has been happening with other Asian countries recently,” Wanvari said in a statement.

World Cup fever: No threat for entertainment channels!

ew Delhi, (IANS) The World Cup begins Saturday but entertainment channels are not fretting about losing too many viewers or advertising. They are safely banking on their dedicated female viewership that is hooked on to their daily dose of soaps and cricket lovers who would only be watching select matches this year. Channels’ spokespersons say that the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, which starts Saturday, won’t affect their business much because cricket has become an all-year phenomenon, and Indians at large watch only selected matches involving the home team. “Cricket is now a 365-day phenomenon and so there is no point in planning life around the cricket calendar. Also during the World Cup it’s primarily the India matches that get the high ratings. Otherwise the loyal GEC (general entertainment channel) audiences pretty much stay with us - cricket or no cricket,” Nikhil Madhok, senior director (Marketing and Communication) with Imagine TV, told IANS. Madhok asserted that cricket affects ratings of GECs by “only

10-15 percent in prime time”. “Usually genres like news, movies, regional and cable are affected much more than GECs,” he added. A Zee TV spokesperson said: “Some India matches may affect ratings but good storylines and loyal viewership to fiction shows stand their own stead.” Industry estimates indicate that channels like STAR Plus, Colors, Zee TV and Sony charge anything around Rs.150,000 for a 10-second advertisement to be aired during prime time. For sports channels, an ad has varied costs depending on the scale of the sports event. During the T20 cricket tournament, an ad could cost Rs.200,000Rs.250,000 for 10 seconds.
During the upcoming World Cup, ad rates on sports channels are expected to be around Rs.225,000-Rs.250,000, which might escalate to Rs.350,000Rs.400,000 towards the finals. This time the World Cup is returning to India after 15 years. So, many cricket aficionados will be catching the action live. But ESPN STAR Sports, the broadcaster for the World Cup, is confident of good viewership. “There is nothing bigger in the world of cricket than the ICC Cricket World Cup and an event as big as this, especially when it is held in the subcontinent, evokes passion and excitement like none other,” said Manu Sawhney, managing director, ESPN STAR Sports. The ESPN STAR Sports’ bouquet of networks, including ESPN, STAR Sports and STAR Cricket, will telecast 49 matches of the World Cup and in addition, 37 matches will be simultaneously telecast in Hindi on STAR Sports. Entertainment channels like Colors, Star Plus, Imagine and Sony have also recently launched new reality as well as fiction shows to grab eyeballs.

CHINESE CHILI CHICKEN RECIPE
PROSECCO THE NEW CHAMPAGNE?
Ingredients: 1. 500 -600 gms Boneless Chicken 2. 2 tbsp Soya Sauce 3. 1 Egg 4. 2 tbsp Corn Flour/Corn Starch 5. 5-6 Chopped Green Chilies 6. 2 Green Onion Chopped 7. 1 tsp Garlic Paste 8. Salt to taste 9. 1/2 tsp White Pepper Powder 10. 1 tsp Sugar 11. A pinch of ajinomoto 12. 2 cups chicken Broth/ Water 13. 1 tbsp Oil 14. Oil to fry
Method to make this recipe: Cut the boneless chicken pieces into1 “ cubes. Take 1tbsp. Soya sauce, 1tbsp. corn flour, salt, egg in a bowl and marinate chicken pieces in the the mixture for about 10-15 minutes. Heat oil and deep fry the marinated chicken pieces till golden brown. Now in a separate wok / kadhai heat 1 tbsp. oil and add garlic paste and green chilies and sauté for few seconds. Add 2 cups of chicken broth or water. Bring to boil and add sugar, pepper powder, salt , ajinomoto and remaining Soya sauce. Add fried chicken pieces to it and cook for few minutes. Dissolve the remaining corn flour in 1/2 cup water and add to the curry stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Serve chinese chili chicken hot garnished with chopped green onion tops. Chinese chili chicken goes well with steamed / boiled rice.
Desi Drinks - Badam Milk Badam is a Hindi word for almonds. Badam Milk is a very traditional, and delicious drink, and can be served any time of the year. Almonds are rich in calcium and iron and with milk makes for a very healthy drink. Almond milk also has medicinal values and is considered as very good for health.
Method of preparation 1. Soak the almonds in 1 cup warm water for about an hour. Now peel off the outer skin of the Almonds. 2. Using a little milk make a fine paste of almonds in the grinder. 3. Soak saffron threads in one table spoon lukewarm milk. Keep aside. 4. Remove the skin of the green cardamoms and ground them in the mortar. 5. Boil the milk, after the first boil reduce the heat and add almonds paste. At this point stir continously. 6. Now boil the milk on medium heat for 5-6 minutes. Stir continuously so milk will not get stick at the bottom. 7. Add sugar, mix well and boil for another minute and turn off the heat. 8. Now add grounded cardamoms and soaked saffron milk. Mix well.
Serving suggestions I like to serve chilled Badam milk in summers and hot milk in winters. In any case sprinkle a pinch of grounded cardamoms, and couple of threads of saffron before serving.

Refreshingly easy to drink, this versatile, fruity, sparkling wine from the Veneto region of Northern Italy is now bubbling worldwide. Gaining acceptance as a less expensive alternative to Champagne, it is rapidly becoming the drink of choice for consumers seeking a fashionable, festive, sparkling wine which won’t break the budget. Prosecco is both the name of the grape and wine, primarily grown in the hills from Conegliano and Valdobbiane,- the main areas of production in the Veneto region (just north of Venice). It is produced using the Charmat method whereby the secondary fermentation takes place in large steel vats. Contact with the yeast is brief which is why Prosecco is typically fresh, fruity and slightly aromatic. In 2009 the Italian government recognized the distinctive geographic area of Coneglian and Valdobbiane by awarding it the prestigious DOCG status (Denominazione di Origine Controllata). The G stands for “Guaranteed” and basically ensures the winemakers must adhere to stricter guidelines than DOC wines. The primary difference is these wines must undergo an in-depth chemical analysis and evaluation of a tasting committee before they can be bottled. They are then are sealed with a numbered governmental seal across the cap or cork. Considering there are only 41 DOCG regions in Italy compared to 300 DOC this is a noteworthy allocation and entitles Prosecco extra prestige and recognition as an exclusive sparkling wine in its own right. This newly acquired status can only help worldwide sales of Prosecco which have already increased visibly according to Mondial Wine. In the UK alone, sales have doubled; Pierpaolo Petrassi Senior Product Development Manager for Italy at Tesco explains, “Prosecco is stylistically appropriate for UK consumers who are not looking for more structured, (usually) drier and more premium-priced Champagne.”. It is traditionally served without food and is fresh in style. In America; “Prosecco is on fire and will continue to grow as consumers look for alternatives to high-priced Champagne,” says Leonardo LoCascio, president and CEO of Winebow Inc. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, consumption of Italian sparkling wines grew 14 percent, up to 16.7 million litres from 14.7 million litres the previous year. This growth includes other popular sparkling wines coming out of Italy, such as Oltrepo’Pavese, Asti Spumante and the prestigious Franciacorta. A crisp and elegant sparkling wine, it is often compared to Champagne, as it uses the same grape varieties and production method (methode Champenoise) where secondary fermentation takes place in bottles. Though lower in cost, Francicorta undergoes even stricter regulations than Champagne regarding maximum yield and maturation time. It is produced in much smaller quantities than Prosecco, but it is another of Italy’s sparkling wines gaining worldwide recognition and accolade. It is not only the Americans and Europeans who are embracing Italian sparkling wines with such fervour, sales in Hong Kong (regarded as the Asian hub) recorded a dramatic rise of 81.2% in terms of value. In December last year, Italian farmers’ union Coldiretti said that exports of Italian sparkling wine would exceed domestic consumption for the first time. It said Prosecco was showing “dynamic” growth in foreign markets. Around 340m bottles of sparkling wine were produced in Italy in 2009, with around 160m bottles supporting the new Prosecco DOC and DOCG denominations. Most commonly drunk on its own, Prosecco also makes for an enticing cocktail. Following these expeditions, the area was officially given the title of “Gippsland”, a name chosen by Strzelecki in honour of the New South Wales Governor, George Gipps, with whom Strzelecki had a close relationship.

ew Delhi, (IANS) Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan Wednesday urged the youth to stay away from corruption and make India a better place by being honest citizens. “The negative has to change. There is so much corruption around and the future can be bettered by young boys and girls only, so that the generations to come can be proud of the country,� Shah Rukh said while addressing students of the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) here. “It is my earnest plea - do not indulge in scams or corruption. Everyday there are new scams in newspapers and TV. So I request the young generation to do things that do not leave the new generations embarrassed. Just make the best of opportunities and I wish all of you all the best,� he added. Shah Rukh, who had hundreds of students waiting to catch a glimpse of him, had other words of wisdom to share before hosting IIPM’s annual international business and marketing quiz DARE 2011. “A lot of people ask me what advice I have to give to them. But I’ll tell you honestly. I was at an award function with Mr. Bachchan once

CWG scam: Bhanot, Verma sent to 14 days’ judicial custody
New Delhi: A Delhi court sent Lalit Bhanot and V.K. Verma, former high ranking officials of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organising Committee, to 14 days’ judicial custody in connection with financial lapses in a contract with a Swiss company. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Judge Talwant Singh sent the OC’s former secretary general Bhanot and former director general Verma to judicial custody till end of the March. Both Bhanot and Verma were produced before the court after the expiry of their five day police custody to which they were remanded Feb 24. The CBI did not seek further police custody. The CBI court allowed Bhanot and Verma to carry their spectacles and medical prescriptions as per the jail manual on the counsel’s request. “Bhanot and Verma can carry spectacles and medical prescriptions to the jail. However, the medicines will be provided to them according to the jail manual,” the judge said. The CBI Feb 23 arrested Verma and Bhanot, who was a key aide of erstwhile OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi, for irregularities to the tune of Rs.1.07 billion ($23 million) in a contract with the Swiss company for time-keeping equipment for the Oct 3-14, 2010 mega event.

It was a family holiday in one of Delhi’s five-star hotels, and Susan Leigh Beer was accompanying her father, a diver and former backstroke champion. Then, one hot day of May 1978, the 17year-old decided to take a dip in the hotel swimming pool. And everything changed. Susan slipped on the unclean bottom of the pool, hit her head against the pool wall, and was rendered disabled. Nearly 33 years later, the Delhi High Court on Thursday ordered Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) — which ran Akbar Hotel, where the incident happened — to give Susan Rs. 1.82 crore for the loss of her life and limb, and “on account of physical pain, mental anguish and psychological anguish and loss of education”. ITDC will pay this with an interest of 6 per cent from 1982. The total works out to Rs. 4.96 crore.

new technology to identify neurologic conditions will be introduced soon by French startup E(ye) Brain. The French company has worked with neurologists at La Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris in developing the video-oculography measurement technology. Called the Mobile Eye Brain Tracker, it works on the premise that eye movements are linked to certain areas of the brain. By tracking these movements, diseases such as Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis could be identified. The gadget may be made available in Europe and other countries soon, although in the US, it still waits for FDA clearance.

NATURAL SOURCES OF VITAMIN B: Different B vitamins come from different natural sources, such as wheat germ, oatmeal, whole wheat, whole brown rice, black strap molasses, soybeans, whole grain products, lean meat, nuts like almonds, walnuts etc, all types of lentils, potatoes, bananas, chilli peppers, liver oil, liver, turkey, tuna, Nutritional yeast (or brewer’s yeast), molasses, Vegemite, eggs, bananas, spinach, broccoli, oats, barley, wheat bran, avocado, salmon, Brazil nuts etc. The B-12 vitamin is of note because it is not available from plant products, making B-12 deficiency a concern for vegetarians. IMPORTANCE OF B VITAMINS: B vitamins are essential to human life and are found in every body cell. Each vitamin performs a specific role and also forms complex, interdependent relationships. The B vitamins often work together to deliver a number of health benefits to the body. B vitamins support and increase the rate of
B VITAMIN RESERVES: All B vitamins are water soluble, and are dispersed throughout the body. Most of the B vitamins other than B12 must be replenished daily, since any excess is excreted in the urine. An average adult’s body can store a
few year’s supply of B12 and a few months supply of Folate. But infants and children will have to be administered regular supplies of these vitamins because they are easily prone to deficiencies as they would not have established extensive reserves. DISEASES CAUSED DUE TO VITAMIN B DEFICIENCY: Folate B9 deficiency in a mother prior to pregnancy will cause premature births and neural tube birth defects such as Spina Bifida in the child. Children are more vulnerable to Vitamin B6 deficiency which can cause convulsions, irritability and anemia. Vitamin B7 deficiency does not typically cause symptoms in adults but may lead to impaired growth, neurological disorders and Seborrhic dermatitis in infants. Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) which is necessary for a child’s growth, memory and learning causes Infantile beriberi in infants aged 2 – 4 months, , resulting due to breast feeding by thiamine deficient mother. Vitamin B2 deficiency results in sensitive eyes(sunlight), lesions at the corner of the mouth, cracked lips and even growth retardation in children. Vitamin B4 or niacin deficiency can cause Pellagra ( typically a disease that occurs in adults) in adolescents and young children if they are exposed to a pellagragenic diet
(unfortified corn diet).Vitamin B12 deficiency causes a type of anemia called Perinicious Anemia or macrocytic anemia, both diseases of the red blood cell. Children with this deficiency usually show symptoms of reduced appetite, diarrhea, tingling of hands and feet, paleness, short breath, fatigue, weakness and sore mouth. Deficiency also shows menstrual symptoms, psychological symptoms, and nervous system problems. Children deficient in vitamin B5 show symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain and fatigue. HOMEOPATHY: In most cases, a balanced diet provides the necessary B vitamins to enrich the body. Sometimes, due to high stress levels, disease, low energy, poor assimilation etc, Vitamin B may not be assimilated into the body at the required levels.
