Delhi metro spreads wings beyond india’s borders
T

with proposals to join them as consultant, officials said. The corporation has over the past decade claimed to have developed expertise on all aspects of a Metro system, and is interested in using the knowledge to help other countries. The DMRC has tried its hand in several Metro projects in India
in the past five years. It has been the consultant and prepared detailed project reports for the Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Jaipur and Kochi Metros. The DMRC has also been asked to construct the Jaipur and Kochi Metros. “It’s time for us to go global,” said SD Sharma, director
(business development), DMRC. “We have approached the authorities concerned of the countries to get us involved in their projects as consultant,” Sharma added. Sources said the DMRC has already been chosen as the consultant for the Dhaka Metro project. It has signed jointventure agreements with several
private companies from India, Tokyo, UK and Bangladesh to provide consultancy services to the Dhaka Metro. The DMRC is also involved in a 527km high-speed railway project connecting Thiruvananthapuram with Kasaragod, its first non-Metro project.

Pranab Mukherjee takes oath as President
P
ranab Mukherjee on Wednesday became the 13th President of India capping a five-decade career that saw him play significant roles in government, Parliament and party. 76-year-old Mukherjee was administered the oath of office to “preserve, protect and defend the constitution and law” by Chief
Justice of India Sarosh Homi Kapadia at an impressive ceremony in the historic Central Hall of Parliament. The veteran leader took the oath in English in the name of God to a thunderous applause and thumping of desks by those in the packed Central Hall that included Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Speaker Meira Kumar, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
and outgoing President Pratibha Patil. The gathering also included Cabinet ministers, leaders of opposition, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, governors, chief ministers, MPs and diplomats. Just after he took oath, he was offered a 21-gun salute marking the assumption of office of the highest constitutional post in the
country. In his brief acceptance address, he said the principal responsibility of this office is to function as the guardian of the Constitution. “I will strive to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution not just in words but in spirit,” Mukherjee said. He also said word poverty should be eliminated from the dictionary of modern India but felt tickle down theory would not work. He said hunger is a humiliation for the mankind. Referring to the change of equations post-Cold War, he said the world was in the midst of fourth World War fighting terror of which India had the early experience. Mukherjee ended his speech saying “there can be no greater reward for a public servant than becoming the First Citizen of the country.” Before the function in Parliament, the outgoing President and the President-elect, wearing a black achkan, churidar (long coat, pyjama), drove a small distance in the bullet-proof presidential limousine from the North Court to the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Patil received the last guard of honour from the horse mounted Presidential Body Guards (PBG) and then the two drove down the Raisina Hill to nearby Parliament
House in a procession accompanied by the PBG. At the Parliament House, they were received by the Vice-President, Lok Sabha Speaker and the CJI. A guard of honour was presented after which they were ushered in to the Central Hall. At the Central Hall, home secretary R K Singh read out the Election Commission notification announcing the election of Mukherjee to the highest constitutional office. Once the oath taking was over, Mukherjee and Patil exchanged seats on the dais in the Central Hall after which the new President made his speech. After the function was over, Mukherjee and Patil were escorted out in a procession and the new President was again given a guard of honour by the PBG. As Mukherjee walked through the aisle in the Central Hall, he received greetings all along from those assembled. He shook hands with the Prime Minister and towards the tail-end of the hall smiles were exchanged between him and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. Mukherjee and Patil then again went in a ceremonial procession to the Rashtrapati Bhavan for another round of guard of honour. He later escorted the outgoing President to 2, Tughlak Lane, her temporary home till she moves to her residence in Pune.

Team Anna disbanded, team members taken by surprise
I
n a decision that took his colleagues by surprise, Anna Hazare today disbanded his team and appeared to be speaking in mixed tones on the political course taken by the anti-corruption movement. The decision to dissolve the team came as a surprise to some of the Team Anna members, including Justice Santosh Hegde and Devender Sharma, while Kiran Bedi, who was in yesterday’s meeting with Hazare, said she did not know what all it means. Setting sights on the 2014 general elections, veteran social activist, Anna Hazare, disbanded Team Anna’s core committee, paving the way for a new political party. He made this announcement in his blog. However, he did not spell out anything clearly about the proposed political party. “Team Anna was made for working for a Jan Lokpal. Since we have decided not to have any links with the Government, Team Anna’s work has come to an end. So, from today, the Team Anna Committee is disbanded,” he wrote. Terming the 2014 general elections as the “last opportunity” for people to root out corruption from this country, Anna Hazare, said, “It’s now or never.”He said in the next one-and-a-half years, he would tour the entire country to raise awareness among people
about the need to elect clean candidates.During his tour, Anna Hazare said he would try and short-list ‘clean’ candidates, “I have experimented in Maharashtra. I selected 12 candidates, of which eight were elected to the Assembly,” he added. However, he cautioned the proposed political party and selected candidates against the lure of power and money. “The day I see
this happening, I will distance myself,” he said. The announcement comes three days after Team Anna ended its indefinite fast, saying it would work towards providing an alternative political force to the people. However, some key Team Anna members have opposed the decision to enter electoral politics. Among these are several core committee members such as
Justice Santosh Hegde, Medha Patkar, Chandramohan and Akhil Gogoi. He also said if people continue to support them like in the past 16 months, then they will be able to send good people to Parliament and ensure laws for Jan Lokpal, Right to Reject, Right to Recall and decentralisation of power.“If the support continues...in next five years, it will be possible to built a
corruption-free India with the support of people and without any party. “May be, he didn’t want starting of political party attributed to team Anna. So, I think he must have disbanded it. Somewhere things have gone wrong. Their thinking to go to Parliament to change the attitude of the House is a good idea but the question is who should go to Parliament.
RAW dismisses its station chief in Beijing
The Beijing station chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), country’s external intelligence agency, has been summarily dismissed from service by the government. Amreet Ahluwalia, a joint secretary rank officer, was dismissed under Article 311 of the Constitution which allows the President to summarily dismiss a government servant in the interest of the security of the State.
August 2012 Edition
Ahulwalia was a Research and Analysis Service officer. According to sources, his clash with the present brass of the agency on operational issues led to his dismissal. Last time, the agency invoked the clause of dismissal without and inquiry in the case of Rabinder Singh, who had allegedly defected to the US. Ahluwalia will not be entitled to any benefit after his dismissal.

Vijender loses in quarterfinals
India’s ace boxer Vijender Singh was knocked out of the 2012 London Games after he went down 13-17 to Uzbek Abbos Atoev in the quarterfinal of the men’s 75kg at the ExCel Arena here late Monday night. Vijender, a Beijing Games bronze medallist, was on the verge of creating history by becoming the only individual Indian athlete to win two Olympic medals. A place in the semi-final would have
assured him of at least a bronze like it did four years ago in Beijing. But, in London, the script unfolded in a different way. Vijender was not aggressive nor tactical as he had been in the last two matches. Having being beaten by Vijender 7-0 in the final of the 2010 Asian Games, the Uzbek was determined to take revenge this time. The two boxers took time to measure up to each other in the
first round that finished at 3-3. The crowd was completely behind the Indian as chants of “jitega jitega India jitega” reverberated at the ExCel Arena. In the second round, the Indian was slow off the blocks that allowed Atoev to take a two point lead by winning the round 7-5. Atoev’s made his flurry of punches count and Vijender also hit back with an upper cut that disbalanced the Uzbek.
The Uzbek was more tactial in the second round that helped him to strecth his lead. Vijender with his left-hook tried to get inside Atoev’s defence but luck was simply not on his side. In the third and the final round, Atoev displayed some lovely defensive skills as Vijender ran out of steam. Vijender gots his left hooks going but Atoev didn’t provide easy opportunities. The Uzbek
danced down the ring and scored his points off the counter attack, dashing Vijender’s hopes of a second Olympic medal. Earlier in the day, five-time women’s world champion M.C.Mary Kom assured India a medal after she booked a place in the semi-finals. India’s chances of a boxing medal from the men’s event is still alive as L.Devendro Singh is in the quarterfinal.

opens medal count for India at Olympics

ndia’s Olympic medal hopes brightened with Gagan Narang’s bronze win in 10-meter air rifle event of the 2012 London Olympics while his illustrious compatriot and defending champion Abhinav Bindra failed to qualify for the final round at Royal Artillery Barracks.
Narang, who is participating in his third Games, had a total score of 701.1 (598 qualifying, 103.1 final). Going into the final round, Narang was third. It was the third time in row that Indian shooters had won medals at the Olympics. Double trap shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore
won the silver in 2004, Bindra gave India a historic gold in Beijing, and now Narang has bagged a bronze in London. In the final round, Narang had a series of 10.7, 9.7, 10.6, 10.7, 10.4, 10.6, 9.9, 9.5, 10.3 and 10.7 to give India its first medal from the London Games.
In the qualifying round, Narang, who missed the final round in Beijing Games on a countback, was in his elements. The 29-year-old Hyderabadi shot perfect series of 100 in all the rounds except the third when he scored 98. He also shot 53 inner 10s.
“It’s a huge stone off my chest,” said a relieved Narang later. “If anyone says there is no pressure in an Olympic final, he has to be joking. This was one medal missing from my collection and I am now happy that I have it.”
Vijay Kumar Silver medallist: no better target than shooting
A
rmy marksman Vijay Kumar won a silver medal for India in the men’s 25 metre rapid fire event at the 2012 London Olympics. The gold went to Cuban Leuris Pupo while Chinese Feng Ding got the bronze. Kumar started with a bang, hitting the target all five times and kept himself in the hunt for a medal by consistently finding the target. After a perfect five out of five at the start, Kumar, found the target four times in the second and third round, but missed it twice in the fourth. He fought back well and shot four times in the next three rounds and assured himself of

a silver. In the last round, with the hope of gold gone and already assured of the medal, Kumar missed three targets. “I had never won a match like this before. May be, the medal was written for me. I have always wanted an Olympic medal. I always wanted to see India’s national flag going up at the podium.” The Chief of Army Staff, General Vikram Singh congratulated Vijaya Kumar for winning the silver medal in the 25m rapid fire pistol event. “It is the result of his untiring effort, dedication and will to win which are the hallmarks of the Indian Army.”

ndia’s wonder girl MC Mary Kom had to settle for the bronze as she went down fighting in her 51 kg semifinal bout to Britain’s Nicola Adams at the Olympics in London on Wednesday. Later, Mary Kom apologised for winning bronze and not a gold medal for India. “My whole country was hoping for me to win a gold medal, and I am sorry I have not come back with that,” said Kom, who had to move up a weight category to fight in London. Buoyed by the presence of British Prime Minister David Cameron and star professional boxer Amir Khan, secondseed Nicola put on a flawless performance beating the Indian 11-6 at the packed ExCel Arena. From the start of the bout, Mary Kom struggled to cope up with the Briton’s speed. She came under pressure in the first round, having to fend off Nicola’s powerful punches. A couple of times the 29-yearold Indian, a mother of twins, was pinned in the corner and took some major blows losing the first round 1-3.
The second round was closer as both boxers tried to assert their dominance. However the five-time world champion found it difficult to get her way around the quick Briton, who narrowly edged the round 2-1. Mary Kom, who had to switch two weight categories to get to 51kg, tried her best to reduce the deficit in the third round but had no answer to the speed of Niocla. The British fighter, who beat the Indian in the World Championships in China, made full use of her height advantage. Mary Kom struggled as the Nicola displayed some clever boxing, causing the Indian massive problems. But to the credit of the newly crowned bronze medallist, she stuck it out and lost the third by a whisker. The final round went pretty much in similar fashion as Mary Kom found it hard to cope with Nicola’s superior size. With time running out the Indian went hell for leather but fell short and lost the round 2-3. Niocla next faces World Champion Ren Cancan of China in the finals.
A disappointed Mary Kom apologised for winning bronze and not a gold medal for India after second seed Nicola Adams put on a flawless performance to beat the Indian 11-6. “My whole country was hoping for me to win a gold medal, and I am sorry I have not come back with that,” Mary said.

Saina also became the second Indian woman to win an Olympic medal, after Karnam Malleswari`s weightlifting bronze in 2000 Sydney Olympics. With the addition of Saina`s bronze, India`s medal collection in the ongoing Olympics has gone upto three with pistol shooter Vijay Kumar (silver) and seasoned marksman

Uttarakhand bans riverside settlements relocating all the villagers, but have only R50 lakh in our kitty,” said Omprakash, principal secretary (disaster management). Amid such stumbling
T
he floods ravaging Uttarkashi district have yet again exposed Uttarakhand’s helplessness in improving disaster management and relief work even though monsoon wreaks havoc without fail each year. According to official records, 233 villages are disaster-prone and could face Uttarkashi-like situation any moment. State disaster management minister Yashpal Arya admitted as much on Monday, while announcing that human settlements in the
vicinity of rivers would not be allowed anymore. Stranded at Chinyalisaur while on his way to Uttarkashi, about 180 km north of Dehradun, Arya said over phone, “We are expediting a proposal aimed at rehabilitating people of 233 villages in the state’s landslide-prone areas. These villages have already been identified as being in the danger zone.” On banning riverside settlements, he said, “The decision was taken in the wake of the massive trail of disaster the flooded Assi
Ganga river left behind after the cloudburst in Uttarkashi (on Friday night).” The state government is aware of the dangers people living in the hills face each year, but many of its best-laid plans have come undone due to lack of funds. For instance, the government has not been able to relocate people of 85 villages even though reports suggest the work needs to be done immediately. The relocation is being done for only one village, Narayan Bagar in Rudraprayag district. “We need R600 crore for
blocks, people continue to reel under nature’s fury. During monsoon three years ago, 45 people were killed in Jhakla and Leh villages in Pithoragarh district.
Flash flooding and heavy rain has wreaked havoc across Uttarakhand. The disaster management has been criticized.

Obama calls PM, conveys condolences
Three days after the senseless attack on a Wisconsin gurdwara, President Barack Obama called Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to convey his condolences and the solidarity of the American people. Obama spoke with Manmohan Singh on Wednesday morning “to express condolences for victims of the senseless attack at the gurdwara in Wisconsin, which took the lives of Indian nationals as well as Americans, and to convey the solidarity of the American people,” according to the White House readout of the call. Obama “reiterated that the Sikh community is an essential and vibrant part of the American family and underscored that the incident is particularly tragic because it took place in a house of worship”. Manmohan Singh expressed his gratitude for the many messages and gestures of support from the US, and for the prompt reaction and heroism of the local police department, it said. “The two leaders re-affirmed their nations’ commitment to the shared values of pluralism, religious freedom, and freedom of worship,” the White House added.
August 2012 Edition
At the State Department, spokesperson Patrick Ventrell said the department was playing a facilitative role “to make sure that our state and local authorities and our national law enforcement authorities are in touch with their Indian counterparts, to the extent that it’s necessary”. ”We, through our channels as the State Department, obviously also, communicate to Indian authorities through their Embassy here and as well as our Embassy in New Delhi,” he said. “Obviously our communication is ongoing and intensive. We have good lines of communication with the Indians and discuss matters such as these,” Ventrell said. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton too had called external affairs minister SM Krishna to convey her heartfelt condolences to him and the greater Sikh community both in the US and India, he noted. “The US and India both strongly share the values of freedom of religion and freedom of worship, and respecting and protecting all faiths,” he said. “So that’s definitely a message that the Secretary conveyed.” Meanwhile, detectives are warning they might never learn for certain what drove the gunman who killed six people
at a Sikh temple to attack total strangers in a holy place. Wade Michael Page is dead, killed by police after the shootings outside Milwaukee. Although detectives are pursuing leads in several states, their findings might never be presented in court.
So will the full story behind the attack ever be known? And how long will investigators keep looking for an elusive motive that might provide answers to devastated Sikh families, as well as valuable information about white supremacists?
At the moment, detectives are sifting through the gunman’s life, assembling the biography of a man who apparently had few relatives, a spotty work history and a thin criminal record. The Sikh community holds out hope for answers.

lin third, also in a personal best 9.79sec. The first seven over the line Tyson Gay was fourth in 9.80sec - all went sub-10sec with former world record holder Asafa Powell breaking down during the race and limping over the line. Bolt admitted there was still some lingering doubts about his start given he had been disqualified in the final of last year’s world
championships for breaking. “I was happy, when I went out in the first round I felt I can do this,” he said. “I was slightly worried about my start. I didn’t want to false start again so I sat in the blocks a bit. “I didn’t get the best reaction in the world, but I executed. that was the key. The coach said don’t worry about it, the best part of your race is at the end.
“People can talk, all they can do is talk but I tell you people, when it comes to the championships, that is business for me, and I brought it. “It was wonderful. I knew it would be like this (out here). I knew it would be loud and it would be great. I could feel the energy.” He also praised his younger teammate, predicting the 22-year-old’s day would come. “You have to give credit to Blake. He works harder than me but when it comes to business I know what to do. He is going to do better next time. “Last time in the worlds there wasn’t a lot of names. Now there were a lot of names, so he’s going to do better next time. He beat almost everybody.” Blake was proud to have won the silver behind the greatest sprinter in history. “This is the fastest man in the world and you have to give him thanks for motivating me. A silver medal, what more can I ask for,” he said. Bolt came to London wanting to become a legend and in his eyes he had to equal the efforts of the great Carl Lewis who won back-to-back 100m titles at Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988. There had been concerns about the world record holder’s fitness after he was defeated by
Blake at the Jamaican Olympic trials. But after seeking treatment for a back/hamstring problem, Bolt was confident he was physically ready to do something special and he didn’t let the 80,000 fans at the Olympic Stadium down. Bolt made a statement in the semi-final and gave a hint that he was back to his brilliant best.
“People can talk...(but) when it comes down to the championships, that is business for me, and i brought it.” It was the Bolt of old, getting to his rivals early and putting them away by the 70m mark and then jogging to the line to stop the clock at 9.87sec. Gatlin ran the second-fastest time in Olympic history to qualify into the final, winning the first semi-final in 9.82sec while Blake had also looked good taking the other semi-final in 9.85sec. Bolt is also competing in the mens’ 200m competition, where he is also the favourite to win.
We need more money! Australian Olympic chief blames medal failure on low funding
A
ustralian Olympic Committee president John Coates blames the failure of his country’s athletes to achieve the expected gold-medal success from the London Games on a shortage of government funding and a lack of compulsory sport in schools. Australia were 24th on the games medals table after nine days, with only one gold medal, 12 silver and seven bronze. Neighboring New Zealand, with less than a fifth of Australia’s population, were 14th with three gold medals. Only in the last few days has Australia caught up in the tally and - thanks to the efforts of Sally Pearson (hurdles), Anna Meares (cycling sprint), Iain Jensen, Nathan Outteridge and Thomas Slingsby (sailing) - are now on five gold medals and 11th position in the tally.** The failure of Australia’s swimmers to provide impetus for a gold medal rush led Coates on Monday to downgrade his London medal expectations from 46 to between 30 and 36 - ruling out a predicted top-five finish. Australian swimmers won only one gold medal - in a relay - six silver and three bronze for the country’s lowest Olympic medal

tally in swimming since Barcelona in 1992. Australia also failed to win an individual medal in swimming for the first time since 1972. Speaking to Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio from London, Coates said with strong performances in sailing and cycling, Australia might still finish as high as eighth on the medal tally, but a top-five finish was no longer realistic. ‘If you analyse it, it is only in
swimming that we are disappointed in the number of medals,’ he said. ‘In Beijing we got 46 medals of which 20 were in swimming. ‘We have 10 here, so realistically we are not going to get 46 medals - 30 to 36 is more likely.’ The most senior Australian member of the International Olympic Committee, former Olympian Kevin Gosper, told ABC the failure to win gold medals resulted directly from cuts to government fund-
ing of Olympic sports in 2009. The Australian government allocated nearly £220million to sports programs in its 2010 budget, but the £35m earmarked for Olympics-focused high performance sports was only half what the AOC had lobbied for.Gosper, a former IOC vice president and current chairman of the IOC Press Commission, said more had to be spent on top coaches and on international competition to ensure Australian athletes were competitive at future games. ‘Now that really cost us,’ he said. ‘You’ve got to put money in there. That pays for coaches, it pays for international competition. ‘The money is the difference between silver and gold.’ Coates also laid blame at the feet of the government, saying it needed to change policy and priorities to ensure funding was available for sport in schools.‘Perhaps the area that needs a lot of attention ... and government intention in terms of policy is getting sport back into the school curricula,’ he said.‘The British are making a big thing of that being one of the legacies they’re looking towards and they’ve been achieving that, a greater emphasis on sport in schools. ‘We need that because we’ve
got to make sure we have a talent pool.’ Federal Sports Minister Kate Lundy told ABC from London that Australian athletes were still up with the best and the world, but that the difference between gold and silver was miniscule and Australia was coming ‘so close so many times.’ ‘It’s a millimeter or a millisecond and it’s just not going our way,’ she said.‘I don’t think that diminishes the achievements of our silver medalists. They’re on the podium. We’re still up there with the best of the best.’ Lunday said the success of Australia’s high performance sports programs would likely be examined after the games but ‘there’s no one piece of our sports system that’s broken.’ While Australia’s lean medal count has led to national soulsearching, New Zealand has been able to celebrate three early medals in rowing. On a medal table based on national population, New Zealand, with just over four million citizens, would be in first place ahead of Slovenia. Note: Information in article is correct as of 6th August. **Medal tally is accurate as of 9th August.

RAKSHA BANDHAN
R
aksha Bandhan was celebrated around the world on the 2nd of August. But what is the festival for? What is its significance? Indian Times looks at the history and importance of the religious festival. Raksha Bandhan, (the bond of protection) or Rakhi is a Vedic festival primarily observed in India and Nepal, which celebrates the relationship between brothers, cousins and sisters. It is also called Rakhi Purnima in most of India. It is also celebrated in some parts of Pakistan. The festival is
T
observed by Hindus, and some Sikhs and Muslims. The central ceremony involves the tying of a rakhi (sacred thread) by a sister on her brother’s wrist. This symbolizes the sister’s love and prayers for her brother’s well-being, and the brother’s lifelong vow to protect her. The festival falls on the full moon day (Shravan Poornima) of the Shravan month of the Hindu lunisolar calendar. One Islamic Scholar believes that Raksha Bandhan grew in popularity after Rani Karnavati, the widowed queen of Chittor, sent a rakhi to the Mughal
emperor Humayun when she required his help. The festival is marked by the tying of a rakhi, or holy thread, which comes in many colors and designs, by the sister on the wrist of her brother. The brother in return offers a gift to his sister and vows to look after her as she presents sweets to him. The brother usually presents his sister with an envelope filled with money, though other presents such as saris and clothing can be given. The brother and sister traditionally feed one another sweets. These sweets include
anything from Jalebi, Kaju Katli, and Burfi. Since north Indian kinship practices give cousins a status similar to siblings, girls and women often tie the rakhi to their male cousins as well (referred to as “cousin-brothers” in regional parlance) in several communities. Unrelated boys and men who are considered to be brothers (munh-bola bhai or adopted brothers) can be tied rakhis, provided they commit to a lifelong obligation to provide protection to the woman or girl. Historical occurrences and mentions: Ganesh had two sons, Shubh and Labh. On Raksha Bandhan, Ganesh’s sister visited and tied a rakhi on Ganesh’s wrist. Feeling and his two wives, Riddhi and Siddhi, for a sister. Finally, Ganesh conceded the demand, and Santoshi Ma (literally the Mother Goddess of Satisfaction) was created by divine flames that emerged from Riddhi and Siddhi. Another incident from the epic Mahabharat concerns Krishna and Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas. She had once torn a strip of silk off her sari and tied it around Krishna’s wrist to stanch the bleeding from a battlefield wound. Krishna was touched by
her action and declared her to be his sister, even though they were unrelated. He promised to repay the debt and then spent the next 25 years doing just that. Draupadi, in spite of being married to five great warriors and being a daughter of a powerful monarch, trusted and depended wholly on Krishna. Krishna repaid the debt of love during the “Cheer-Haran” (literally “clothing-removing”) of Draupadi, which occurred in the assembly of King Dhritarashtra when Yudhisthira lost her to the Kauravas in gambling. At that time, Krishna indefinitely extended her saree through divine intervention, so it could not be removed, to save her honor. This is how he honored his rakhi vow towards Draupadi. According to one legendary narrative, when Alexander the Great invaded India in 326 BC, Roxana (or Roshanak, his wife) sent a sacred thread to Porus, asking him not to harm her husband in battle. In accordance with tradition, Porus, a Katoch king, gave full respect to the rakhi. On the battlefield, when Porus was about to deliver a final blow to Alexander, he saw the rakhi on his own wrist and restrained himself from attacking Alexander personally.
His previous protest at Ramlila Maidan from June 4, 2011 ended in a midnight police crackdown on June six morning with authorities claiming that he violated the norms agreed upon. He was caught by police while trying to flee from the venue in woman’s attire. Anna Hazare was not present
at the beginning of the fast though he had earlier declared that he will join the protest. Ramdev’s protest comes a week after Hazare called off his fast and disbanded his team which has decided to take a political plunge. Ramdev said he has no political agenda and the second phase of his protest will be announced if the government does not agree to his demands on blackmoney, Lokpal Bill, appointment procedures and making CBI independent. Baba Ramdev maintained he harbours no political ambitions and his only aim was to push for bringing back unaccounted money stashed abroad. “We have no political ambitions, we have no political mission or political agenda. Our only mission is to save the country by bringing back black money,” he said while talking to the media. “We have appealed to every social, religious, political and spiritual organisation to join our movement. So anyone can come and join us...,” he maintained when asked if Arvind Kejriwal or Kiran Bedi, key members of now disbanded Team Anna, would be present at this protest site.
Ramdev to fast for 3 days, then decide future course of action
he fight for the Lokpal bill was not yet over and the government would have to give the legislation to the citizens of India, Baba Ramdev said on Thursday as he began his agitation against corruption and black money. Addressing thousands of supporters at the Ramlila Maidan here, Ramdev said: “The fight for Lokpal is not over. A strong Lokpal will have to be given to the people of India.” “The Lokpal bill should not be the government’s version which will be weak,” he added. According to reports, Ramdev also clarified that their fast will not be indefinite and they will fast for the next three days. Baba would decide the future course of action on August 12. Six days ago, on Aug 3, Anna Hazare and his team members ended their fast for stringent Jan Lokpal bill to give a “political alternative” to the people. Team Anna was subsequently disbanded on Aug 6. Holding tricolours, thousands of Ramdev supporters packed the Ramlila Maidan to support him. Before reaching the ground, Ramdev paid tribute to Mahatma

Gandhi and Bhagat Singh at Rajghat and Shaheedi Park respectively. The yoga guru had arrived in the capital on Thursday morning from Gujarat where he had been meditating since Monday at Vallabhbhai Patel’s memorial. Delhi Police have given the organisers permission to host 30,000 people a day.
Ramdev has been allowed to hold the ground till Aug 30. The second round of Ramdev’s protest has witnesses an expansion of his agenda from blackmoney to Lokpal Bill, making CBI independent and a more transparent procedure for appointing Election Commissioners, CAG, CVC and CBI director.

“I joked about doing a film with Natalie Portman”
E
xpect Saif Ali Khan to bring on humour off the screen as well. Just when one thought that the actor was taking his lover boy image to the West as well, what with a film with none less than Natalie Portman being on the cards, here is the latest. The ‘news’ was nothing but a joke from Saif who chose to crack it after finding himself in the middle of all the speculations, assumptions and rumours. The fact that he was obviously ‘high’ (no pun intended) on Cocktail further made him loosen up all the more that made him ‘reveal’ this ‘information’ which was nothing but his way to ‘entertain’ himself for a change. “Saif is plain amused to see so much being said and written about his personal life as well as certain career decisions. Right from being married off to Kareena every second month to the newer dates being announced to the questions coming his way about playing a lover boy to actually getting
some of the biggest successes whenever he has wooed his girls on screen, Saif is finding himself in the thick of things. It was one such moment when a journalist asked him about his future plans and Saif decided to have some fun”, says a close associate of the actor. It was then when instead of coming with the denials or evasive answers, he built up a story around a film with Natalie. After all, he pretty much knew that a quote stated by him in jest would actually make headlines and to some extent, this was also his own way to have some good time while being on the other side of the table. “He was obviously grinning from ear to ear when everyone picked the news about Natalie and there was a new round of speculations that started making the rounds. The biggest question was around how did he actually make this Bollywood-Hollywood collaboration happen, especially when so many other
actors are said to be planning it without fail for years”, the associate continues, “Saif’s phone was ringing day in and night out for the last couple of days but he chose to keep mum as this time around the amusement level took a different proportion.”
However, Saif has now decided to break his silence otherwise the entire weekend would have gone into further media overdrive about the film, something that he felt was avoidable. “It was a joke, I am sorry”, smiles Saif, “It’s just that I am
very annoyed with speculations on all the aspects of my life. If this goes on, I might just start making up stories like these to entertain myself. Hope people will understand that.” Wishful thinking, shall we say? You never know!

New life on Mars: how Curiosity saved NASA “Curiosity’s successful landing has saved NASA’s space programme from extinction, and will be a giant step in our understanding of the Red Planet.”
W
ith the rover C u r i o s i t y ’ s dramatic landing accomplished, testing of its communication and power systems began as NASA worked to understand exactly where its vehicle had landed and how it withstood its 354 million-mile journey to Mars. NASA scientists believe the one-ton rover landed on bedrock in the 3.5 billion-yearold Gale Crater and is facing the distant crater wall, believed to be about three miles high. A mountain in the crater will be the focus of the mission because its exposed rock faces are expected to provide clues about the area’s physical history and whether life’s building blocks ever existed there. NASA Curiosity’s ambitious Mars mission: NASA’s sedansize Mars rover landed safely on the Red Planet and will begin its search for the building blocks of life. NASA’s Mars rover, named Curiosity, was expected to land on the planet in August. Now that NASA’s rover Curiosity is safe on the surface of Mars, the robot will start its scientific investigation at Gale Crater. The roving laboratory is equipped with a full array of instruments aimed to determine if the Red Planet was ever capable of supporting life.
In the aftermath of the highprecision landing, spaceexploration advocates embraced Curiosity as proof of American ambition and prowess. The landing was telecast on national television in the US, as well as across many more countries around the world as the NASA scientists anxiously waited for the first images of Mars telecast by the rover. NASA’s ‘Curiosity’ rover successfully landed on Mars in a daring ‘skycrane manoeuvre’, beginning a two-year mission to probe if the Earth’s closest neighbour once hosted life. The car-size, one-tonne rover costing $ 2.5 billion touched down on Mars at 05:30 GMT (3:30 AEST), NASA said. The rover’s descent-stage retrorockets fired, guiding it to the surface. Nylon cords lowered the rover to the ground in the “sky crane” manoeuvre. When the spacecraft sensed touchdown, the connecting cords were severed, and the descent stage flew out of the way, according to NASA. The landing was an unprecedented feat that involved penetrating the atmosphere at a speed of 21,240 kilometres per hour. Minutes after touchdown, Curiosity beamed back the first pictures from the surface showing its wheel and its
shadow, cast by the afternoon Sun. Scientists have found signs of water on the red planet previously, though it is now a dry place with a thin atmosphere, extreme winters and dust storms. Curiosity is not equipped to search for living or fossil micro-organisms. Instead, it will look for the basic ingredients essential for life, including carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulphur and oxygen.
Samsung phones “confusingly similar” to Apple iPhone
T
he focus of the courtoom battle between Apple and Samsung Electronics shifted to the iPhone’s iconic display as the US company called a former employee and awardwinning graphic designer to back up claims that Samsung gadgets look “confusingly similar.” Susan Kare, who from 1982 to 1986 had a hand in designing icons for the original Macintosh computers, scrutinised the home screens of 11 of the Korean firm’s phones -- including the Galaxy S and Epic 4G -- and found the icons and layout to be very similar. Apple is contending that buyers may confuse Samsung devices with the iPhone, and accuses the Asian firm of copying design and features. Samsung, in turn, has accused Apple of violating Samsung wireless technology patents. Kare -- who is also credited for Microsoft icons such as the “Notepad” and for its deck of “Solitaire”
August 2012 Edition
game cards -- testified that even she was fooled by a Samsung gadget at a pre-trial meeting. “There was a big conference table with many phones on it, and some of them were on,” said Kare, who followed the late Steve Jobs to his NeXt computer startup in 1986 before starting her own firm. “I could see the sceeen. I went to pick up the iPhone to make a point about the user interface, and I was holding a Samsung. “I think of myself as someone who’s pretty granular about looking at graphics, and I mistook one for the other.”When it came Samsung’s turn to cross-examine Kare, lead attorney Charles Verhoeven -- displaying a flash of theatrics -- switched on a Samsung phone and asked Kare to tell the jury what she saw: a bright white Samsung logo. Apple and Samsung are going toe-to-toe in a high-wattage
patent dispute, mirroring a fierce battle for industry supremacy between two rivals that control more than half of worldwide smartphone sales. The trial playing out in downtown San Jose over the summer is one of many disputes between the two around the world that analysts see as partly aimed at retarding the spread of Google’s Android, the world’s most used mobile software. The testimony focused on the iPhone’s familiar front face, with its outsized square icons. Kare pointed to numerous similarities on Samsung phones, including rounded corners, a range of icon styles from retro-plain to stylised, and an evenly spaced grid. “It is my opinion that the overall collection of graphic features that makes the overall visual impression could be confusing to a consumer,” Kare told the packed courtroom.
Apple and Samsung have been battling it out in the courtrooms for quite some time now. The iPhone’s iconic display was the focus of attention as the US company called in a former employee to back up claims that Samsung gadgets look “confusingly similar”

bollywood music Music Review :
Y
Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi
ou are a little unsure about what the music of Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi would have in the offing. Given the fact that it has Farah Khan and Boman Irani as a pair, you do expect something unusual for sure. Moreover with the name Sanjay Leela Bhansali attached to the film, you do expect music to play a good part in the proceedings. However music of My Friend Pinto, which just like Shirin Farhad... was only produced by him and had a controlled budget setting to it, didn’t make any waves musically. Still, with Jeet Ganguly and Amitabh Bhattacharya as the composer and lyricist, you wait to be surprised. It is actually a rather uncharacteristic beginning for ‘Ishq Main Tere Bina’, what with the basic tune set in the same style as South melodies from the 90s. In fact both K.K. and Shreya Ghoshal also sing in a similar smooth flowing style as S. P. Balasubramaniam and Chitra were known for in the era gone by. Nevertheless, this romantic number does have a nice pace to it and isn’t really an assault on ears. Still, one doesn’t really get overly excited to play it all over again as it doesn’t really stay with you. Moreover, it doesn’t really sound like a number that normally finds a place at the top of the album. The way ‘Khatti Meethi’ begins, you know that it is Jeet Ganguly at play because it has that soulful feel to it which one expects from the composer. Shreya Ghoshal SonuANighm

solo, it is about a woman falling in love where all the romantic feelings are brought out with all the innocence intact. A situational track, it has a 70s touch to it and could well have found its way in the likes of Guddi, Khatta Meetha, Khoobsurat and other films belonging to the ilk. Yes, at times Amitabh Bhattacharya’s lyrics do turn a tad metaphorical, but you are fine hearing this one for its five minute duration. It is back to K.K. with ‘Kaafir Andhere’, a sad number which has the sound of guitar immediately reminding one of ‘Baadalon Mein Chup Raha Hai Chaadn Kyon’ [Phir Teri Kahaani Yaad Aayi]. However that effect is only short lived as the song comes on its own with a soft rock setting reminding one of the many such compositions that Pritam has made in the decade gone by. Well, this is pretty much expected since there Jeet-Pritam were once a team. Coming back to ‘Kaafir Andhere’, it starts off well but eventually settles down as just about decent since it doesn’t quite bring on the kind of energy that could have ignited pathos. After a rather long delay arrives the title track ‘Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi’. Though one would have expected this flagship number to kick-start the proceedings, for some strange reasons this comes pretty late in the day. Not that it is a huge chartbuster in the making but still this spirited number is perhaps the best bet for the film which is expected to be a fun ride. Neeraj
Shridhar is in his elements for this joyous number that should be continuously promoted to give the album some good results. With the name Mohit Chauhan in the credits you do get fairly excited because the man never disappoints. However with the song’s title going as ‘Kuku Duku’ you do wonder what would be there in the offering. The results, unfortunately, aren’t really heartening as Mohit (for some unexplained reasons) sounds like Anu Malik in the beginning portions and is made to render lyrics that go as ‘Gadheda’. Meanwhile there is a sound of ‘Kuku Duku’ that continues to play in the back-
ground, hence making you stay away from this situational track that may look funny on screen but isn’t really the one to be sung along. Faraz Ali is the guest lyricist for the last song in the album, ‘Rhamba Mein Samba’. Usha Uthup is the chosen one for this fast paced track that is aimed seemingly has a fun setting to it and is expected to elevate the film’s narrative. In fact Jeet does try to amalgamate various sounds and make the overall song as lively and spirited. However the end results are entirely dependent on the way the song is picturised since as a standalone number it
doesn’t really hold much ground. Even though one had mixed expectations from the music of Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi, the overall impact is even lower as there is not even a single song that has in it to become a chartbuster. Though none of the tracks make you look the other way, you do want something to hold you on to the album at least. Unfortunately in case of Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi, there is just the title track and to some extent ‘Khatti Meethi’ that warrant as repeat play. Rest would be entirely dependent on the way they are fitted into the film due to their situational appeal.

BMW to see slowest growth in 2012
MW, the leader in the luxury car market, has said that 2012 will see the “slowest growth” for the company since its India debut in 2007 as competitive pressures and weakening economy dampen demand. Andreas Schaff, president of BMW India, said new purchases are hard to come by as it is getting difficult to convert customer inquiries into sales. “We do not expect growth to be beyond single digit this year, somewhere in the range of 5 per cent,” Schaff, who is set to move out of the Indian market later this year, told TOI. “If the market is good, the maximum we can grow is 10 per cent.” BMW’s volumes have slipped 1 per cent in the first half of 2012. The company is facing tough times as its rivals are moving aggressively. Audi is breathing down BMW’s neck and its sales have grown 43 per cent in the JanuaryJune 2012. Tata owned British luxury brand Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is also expanding. Schaff admits that competitive pressures exist, but adds that BMW is
confident of maintaining its edge. “The competition in the market is fierce. Also, people want to experience different products, a fact we do recognise.” The company is confident that new launches and other marketing innovations
will add momentum to its numbers. The most notable of the launches has been the new-generation 3-Series sedan that hit the market earlier this month. BMW is also working on a new retail expansion strategy in India. Under a

We came up with ‘Gyaan hi aapko aapka...’ because it is a great factor to empower people. One of the most important parts of the show is how do we democratize the entire KBC,” said Danish Khan, Senior Vice President. Bachchan underwent an abdominal surgery in February and was advised rest for sometime. Earlier there were reports that he might not host the show. “There is nobody like Mr Bachchan. His appeal transcends across all age groups. He can relate and connect with people of all backgrounds. His command over the language - both Hindi, English and many other local languages, his humility and sincerity are the factors that drive his popularity,” Khan said. The show will be aired on prime time on Sony. “We can’t tell the exact slot as we are brainstorming the right time. But certainly it will be a prime time slot,” he said.

hile dancer-turnedactress Isha Sharvani has been dancing her way to the top slot on a TV dance reality show week after week, her fellow contestants feel that the competition is too much onesided. Especially since Isha is a professional dancer and a teacher, while the others are simply amateurs. The general feeling is that Isha is way too good to make it a fair contest. While some of the contestants admit to us that the issue bothers them, they however

say that all is not lost. In fact, they are practising their moves with renewed enthusiasm. While acknowledging that her background in dance is an advantage to Isha, anchor and cricket presenter Shibani Dandekar says, `We have to look past the fact that Isha is the best. We just need to improve ourselves.` In fact, even the other contestants Gurmeet Chaudhary, Giaa Manek and Ravi Kishan say they are trying their best to not get affected by Isha’s victory over them in every episode.
Recently, when Gurmeet received a low mark, a few of his fans protested. Some even objected to the alleged special treatment being meted out to Isha. The channel had however denied the allegations. Stand-up comedian Bharti Singh, `Yes, sometimes we feel that she is the star of the show, but if she has a 60 per cent chance of winning the show, we too have at least a 40 per cent chance. The rest all are non- dancers but I may be capable of doing some moves that she may not know, and vice versa.`

shish Kapoor and Priyal Gor’s onscreen romance during the shooting of ‘Dekha Ek Khwaab’ manifested into an off-screen affair. And ever since, the couple has been open about their relationship. But rumour mills are buzzing with the couple’s break up. As ‘Dekha Ek Khwaab’ comes to an end and Ashish’s new show ‘Love Marriage Ya Arrange Marriage’ goes on air soon, Ashish and Priyal’s relationship also went kaput. We wonder if this was a publicity gimmick to garner TRPs for ‘Dekha Ek Khwaab’ or to bring Ashish’s new show
into the limelight. When contacted, Priyal Gor refused to comment. However, Ashish Kapoor had a different version to share. When asked about the couple’s future together and their marriage plans, Ashish in a very recent interview replied, “No marriage plans as of now. We are still very young and we are kids. We are too small to take such a big step. Let us enjoy our lives”. Does that mean a yes or no? The question remains, are they to be or not to be? We hope this couple remains together!

Gajar Ka Halwa: Indian Carrot Pudding Ingredients (Serves 6) • 1 lb carrots (grated) • 1 cup sugar • 3 tablespoon ghee butter) • ½ cup condensed milk
(substitute
• ¾ cup khoya (use ricotta cheese if not available) • Few cardamoms (optional) • 1/4 cup cashews (for garnish) • 2 tablespoon dates (for garnish)
Gajar Ka Halwa is a classic Indian carrot pudding. It usually has few spices such as cardamom and few nuts. For a version, use canned carrot instead of regular grated carrot. Boil it and mash it. To make condensed milk, heat regular whole milk with sugar on a medium-low heat. While heating milk, dip a ladle into the milk so that the milk would not boil over.
Method • Put the grated carrots into the pot/pan. • Cook the carrot with ghee on a low heat for 20-30 minutes. • Make sure to stir frequently while cooking to prevent overcooking.
• Add the condensed milk, khoya and sugar to the mix. • Continue cooking on a medium-low setting for 15-20 minutes. • During this time, add a few cardamoms if preferred.
• Pour contents into separate bowls carefully as it will be hot. • Garnish with the cashews and dates and serve hot. Cardamoms are a great addition for some extra flavour and spice.
Alcohol could intensify the effects of some drugs in the body
S
cientists are reporting another reason -- besides possible liver damage, stomach bleeding and other side effects -- to avoid drinking alcohol while taking certain medicines. Their report in ACS’ journal Molecular Pharmaceutics describes laboratory experiments in which alcohol made several medications up to three times more available to
August 2012 Edition
the body, effectively tripling the original dose. Christel Bergström and colleagues explain that beverage alcohol, or ethanol, can cause an increase in the amount of non-prescription and prescription drugs that are “available” to the body after taking a specific dose. Alcohol can change how enzymes and other substances in the body interact with many of
the 5,000 such medications on the market. Some of these medications don’t dissolve well in the gastrointestinal tract -- especially in the stomach and intestines. The researchers sought to test whether ethanol made these drugs dissolve more easily. If so, this would make the drugs more available in the body, possibly intensifying their effects when combined with alcohol.
To find out, the scientists used a simulated environment of the small intestine to test how rapidly medications dissolved when alcohol was and was not present. Almost 60 percent of the 22 medications in their tests dissolved much faster in the presence of alcohol. In addition, they found that certain types of substances, such as those that were acidic, were more affected.
Some common acidic drugs include warfarin, the anticoagulant; Tamoxifen, used to treat certain forms of cancer; and naproxen, which relieves pain and inflammation. he lure of Rajasthan draws numerous tourists towards its heritage, culture, wildlife and amazing scenery. The meaning of the term Rajasthan is the land of Kings and stories of the great warriors and their gallantry, romance, glory and tragedy abound in the region. This state is located in the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent and features magnificent forts, wonderful palaces and peaceful lakes. Get treated like a noble at this land of the royals which is also acknowledged for its unparalleled hospitality. Each of the cities of Rajasthan has its own history, culture and heritage that never fails to impress the tourists. Rajasthan is blessed with a diverse terrain that makes it stand apart from the rest of the tourist destinations of India. Here you can take pleasure of amazing sunset at the Thar Desert, enjoy the adventurous wildlife or spend some moments at the hill station in a healthy climate. This state has so much to offer that your tour to Rajasthan is definitely going to be an unforgettable one. The important cities of Rajasthan are Ajmer, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Bikaner and Jaisalmer. There are a number of tourist attractions in Rajasthan that will simply enthrall you. Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jaisalmer Fort, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, Lake Palace-Udaipur, City Palace-Jaipur and City Palace-Udaipur are some of them to mention.
History of Rajasthan
Rajasthan is the largest state in India that covers most of the area of the Desert of Thar on the west side of Pakistan. The Rajputs arose from the mixing of various races that settled in Rajasthan around 1400 BC. These include the Afghans, Turks, Persians and Mughals. Then in 7 AD or the times of Harsha up to the founding of the Delhi Sultanate, many kingdoms fought for the area of Rajasthan until they branched out into 36 royal clans. The Rajputs, with all their wealth and power gained the reign over the land. Despite the occurrences of many enemies, the Rajputs remained on control until the 14th Century. After the Rajputs decline, the Mughals took in place through the leadership of their Emperor named Akbar. They were able
August 2012 Edition
to do that by making marital relations with the Rajputs. But Mughals’ control did not last for long because the Rajputs were able to regain it. Until now, Rajputs’ descendants have high influences over the common men. For that reason, they are said to be considered as the living image of thee knightly noble, brave and handsome. Even under the British Empire, the Rajputs were able to gain importance as they were given durbars, royal polo matches and 21 gun salutes. After India became independent, 23 princely states were combined forming the state of Rajasthan.
Cuisines of Rajasthan
The cooking style in Rajasthan is somewhat patterned to the war-like lifestyle of the medieval era of Rajasthan where dishes depend on the availability of ingredients in the region. The food at the same time last for several days and could be eaten even without heating. Just like in the Desert of Jaisalmer, Barner and Bikaner, the dishes are prepared and cooked with a little amount of water. The cooks use more milk, buttermilk and clarified butter. One of the best known Rajasthani dishes is the mixture of dals (lentils), bati and churma.
Folk Music and Dances
Rajasthan is an Indian state where tradition plays a very important part in people’s lives. Its people thrive in a culture as diverse as its geography. The richness of Rajasthan culture is captivated in its folk music and dances which oftentimes tell stories of adventures, battles, heroic deeds and romance. Rajasthan dances are as splendid as its music. There is a community dance called Ghoomar which is performed by the women of all ages. It is also a ritual dance for brides, sort of a welcoming dance to the bride who will be part of her husband’s home. It is a very long dance that can continue for hours into the night. Fire dance is also performed during religious celebrations on winter nights showcases the Rajasthan very strong faith to their gods. The dancers perform on a bed of ember and oftentimes even flaming coals. Another interesting dance is the Kachi Ghoodi where

the men and women wear costumes that resemble horses. They pretend to be soldiers or horsed bandits. The performers carry mock swords and play the party of bandits of the Shekhawati, a Rajasthan. They are Rajasthan own version of Robinhood stealing from the rich and providing for the poor.
Where to eat
Eating out in Rajasthan is no big problem, especially in the major cities. Almost all the major cities have the restaurants serving various cuisines like Chinese, Thai, Mughlai, Continental as well as the various Indian cuisines. Even fast food like Pizza, Burgers, Sandwiches, Hot Dogs, French Fries, etc is also easily available. This solves the problem of “where to eat in Rajasthan?” However, you may encounter a little problem in the small cities like Ranakpur, Dungarpur, Jhalawar, Nathdwara, etc. Here, you will get the traditional Indian, especially Rajasthani, food only. You can also find a number of foreign brands in the hospitality sector of Rajasthan. For example, there is a Pizza Hut and Wimpy’s in Jaipur. There is a Wimpy’s outlet in Udaipur also. Apart from there, there are a number of fast food corners as well as restaurants in almost each and every city of Rajasthan. Also, almost all the popular hotels have restaurants of their own that serve multi cuisine food.
Rajasthan Hotels
You will find a number of hotels that have been refurbished into the heritage hotels and serve the tourists who want to relive the opulence and luxury of the past. The most famous heritage hotels in Rajasthan are located in the important towns such as Jaipur, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer.
Best Time To Visit
Even though Rajasthan is a place visited by tourists throughout the year, the best time to visit Rajasthan is during winters. Mid October to mid March is the peak season for Rajasthan. The reason for this is that the climatic conditions in Rajasthan are quite extreme. Another reason is that all the major fairs and festivals of Rajasthan are celebrated around this time only.

[Exclusive Interview]
GEORGIA NanScawen First of all, Congratulations on being part of the Australian Olympics Squad, it really is a great achievement. Thanks very much! So you’re here in London, what’s it feel like to be representing your country at the pinnacle of sporting competitions? It is a pretty amazing feeling. It sounds cliche, but it really is a bit of a dream come true. It is what we have all worked so hard for for so long that it is pretty incredible to finally be here. And how about the overall atmosphere of the Olympics experience? Again it really is pretty incredible. There is no other sporting event in the world that brings together so many different athletes from so many sports and countries, so it is nothing like I have ever experienced before. At first it was really quite overwhelming-the amount of people, the size of it all (particularly the dining hall!), but after being here for a couple of weeks we are feeling quite at home! What sort of preparation did you and your team go through for the Olympics? We have been training together full time in Perth since the start of the year to prepare for the olympics. In nonolympic years, girls are generally required to work or study as well as train, but this year we pretty much drop everything to concentrate on the hockey. A stranded training week would consist of up to 10 sessions a week, including group sessions, individual skills sessions and strength and conditioning, and on top of that we would have numerous meetings and “hockey school”. Pretty busy! This year we were also lucky enough to get plenty of international match practice, with tours to Argentina and the USA, and London, and home series against Argentina, the USA and Korea. Going back, how did you get into Hockey? My parents were always into sport - Mum played tennis and hockey, and dad played cricket-so it was natural that I would play some form of sport. From a very young age I was down at my mum’s hockey trainings with a stick in hand, and so when I was five they signed me up at Essendon Hockey club to play in the Under 9s, and I went from there! And you started off as a midfielder but since joining the Aussie team you’ve become more of a striker. How different was it? Did it take long to get used to? Do you prefer one position over the other? It was quite a challenge at first. I had always played as a midfielder, and even for a season in my boys club team I played as a back defender! It has probably taken me a few years to really start to feel comfortable as a striker, and I still have a lot to learn, but I am starting to enjoy it more and more. It is hard to say which I prefer-I am happy to play wherever I can get a game! However the way we play strikers and midfielders often rotate and interchange positions during the game, so it is handy to be able to play both positions well. We hear you’re quite talented across all sports in general, any favourites? I pretty much love sport in general, and particularly like playing soccer, football and cricket. Actually, I like playing
most sports, except for basketball (my height never really allowed me to excel at basketball!)
You’re quite young, only 20 years old, how did you cope with high school and Hockey? It was quite a challenge balancing study and hockey, but I had a fair bit of support from my school, which was fantastic. I am also a pretty organised person, and took school work away with me to do on tour.
And university? Same answer as above applies. Though I deferred my Uni course for the olympic year to fully focus on hockey. Did most of the other girls at high school provide good competition for you, or were the boys more formidable? There were a few girls at school who loved playing sport as much as I did, and we would often join in kicking a ball around with the boys at lunch time. You’re friends and family are from Melbourne, will that always be your home or do you feel Perth could be more than just a ‘home away from home?’ I will always consider myself a Melbourne girl, no matter how long I am required to live in Perth! I love coming back home and catching up with my family and friends, and there is so much to do in Melbourne! Have you seen the bollywood movie about womens hockey, Chak De India? What did you think of it? Yes, I have seen Chak De India! I really enjoyed it - it is great to see a movie made about hockey! It was actually quite amusing to watch because I knew a few of the girls who were extras in the movie - it was very entertaining! The women’s team for India didn’t qualify for these Olympics, but as opponents how do you rate them? The Indian team is always tough to play against. They are very quick and skilful, and the games are always quite physical. It is never an easy match! RAPID FIRE QUESTIONS - Favourite city (in the world) Melbourne, obviously! - Favourite food Anything chocolate - or a good gourmet hamburger - Favourite cuisine Thai - Favourite movie The Dark Knight - Favourite TV show Friends - What you would do in your spare time Generally I am so exhausted from training and studying, in my spare time I like to relax, put my feet
up on the couch and - What you would do if y I would probably be p I was to do somethin cool to do something paid to eat would be - The best thing at the O The atmosphere whe awesome. - The worst thing at the O The early morning ga 5 am! Thanks, and good luck!

SALMAN SHOOTS AT HIGH SECURITY

alman Khan has always been a cut apart from the rest of Bollywood. He proved this yet again when he was given special permission to film in high security areas of New Delhi for his upcoming spy thriller Ek Tha Tiger. In fact Salman was given the nod to shoot in areas where government bureaucrats live, instead of having to shoot at specially-erected sets. Apart from shooting in the Parliament Street area, several scenes were also filmed in some Government quarters. Apparently, the makers of the film had initially sought special permission from the government to shoot at these locations. Reason behind the want of such levels of authenticity was that the makers wanted to precisely depict the life of anonymity that special agents live. Ek Tha Tiger also stars Katrina Kaif and is set for release this August 15.

‘Heroine’ Kareena take a dig at Katrina!

es, after Deepika Padukone, it is Kareena Kapoor who has gone on to take potshots at fellow actress Katrina Kaif and her foreign origin. But before you jump to conclusions, you should know that the digs are part of Bebo’s script in Heroine. According to Zee News, Kareena takes jibes at another actress with remarkable similarities to Katrina in one of the scenes from the film. Apparently, while interacting with a journalist in the scene, the ‘Heroine’ made fun of the actress, claiming that the latter got successful only because her boyfriend (Salman Khan) was a big star. Not just this, Bebo even remarks on how the actress’ passport should be checked to identify her real name, age and country of origin. Interestingly, rumour has it that even the lady playing the ‘foreign’ actress is supposed to resemble Katrina. Kareena was reportedly reluctant to do this scene (possibly for its glaring insinuations), but was convinced by director Madhur Bhandarkar who reasoned that several aspiring actresses did come to India to try their luck in films. Katrina’s passport had become a much-talked about issue when Deepika Padukone had quipped about it on Koffee With Karan. Sonam Kapoor, too had taken digs at Katrina’s dressing sense at the Cannes film festival.

Becoming Aware of Awareness
A
wareness is one of the greatest gifts that existence has given to human beings. All spiritual masters tell their students, “Become aware, increase your awareness,”
August 2012 Edition
And they suggest various methods to do so. Animals too have awareness, but that is more instinct driven. They are aware of hunger or thirst, or of danger and death, but purely by instinct.
Animal awareness is mostly about the present moment, although some awareness does come to them from past conditionings too. A human being is aware of himself, his near and dear ones
and his environment. But more than that, he is aware of the past and future, his thoughts, and emotions. Awareness, however, is a double edged sword. With increasing awareness, one does find life to be more fulfilling. However, it is this very awareness that brings in two negative emotions that drives us, namely fear and greed. An animal knows fear only instinctively and does not know greed. We know that there is a tomorrow, that we have to provide for future needs as well as plan for contingencies like disease, poverty, infirmity and death. This creates worry and agony on the one hand, but also enables us to plan in order to secure the future. If we did not have awareness of the future, wwould not be as miserable or anxious, but we could also not be prepared for any future situations. The normal awareness we have of ourselves, of life, environment, and of our emotional state, is likely to give us more periods of unhappiness than joy. In order to get rid of this unhappy state, we have two choices---to reduce or lose our awareness or to raise our awareness levels to that of spiritual masters, to the level of evolved or enlightened souls, to the level of a Buddha. It is definitely easier to go down in awareness than to increase awareness. All our mental escapes and our addictions are attempts that take us down the awareness level though the aim is to look for relative peace. But this
is eventually counter-productive, as it destroys the mind and body, often leaving us worse off. Knowing that our current levels of awareness are not enough to make our lives peaceful and joyous is often the first step on the path to spiritual realisation. Thus begins the journey of becoming more aware, through watching our breath, concentration, and meditation. We start by becoming aware of our body, because that is gross and easier. Once we are reasonably aware of our body, we have to move on to the mind, which is more complex. With the body, it is easier, since the body becomes the object and the mind is the subject. However, with the mind, object and subject appear to be the same. It is our mind which needs to become aware of the mind. This initially produces more conflict, till one comes to the conclusion that there is something beyond the mind, the silent witness, the one who sees, one who powers all the organs and gives energy to the mind. This is our true Self, our soul, spirit or atman. All our awareness should lead us to that part of ourselves that is permanent, indestructible, and unchanging, for only when we get there, can we be free of the manipulations and machinations of mind. Once we can see our thoughts for what they are, we are free, we are at peace. This is the goal of all awareness.

August 2012 Edition

n the dark world of intelligence and espionage, all information is guarded in the name of national security But some stories escape the fiercely guarded classified files and these stories become legends. This is one such story, a story that shook the very foundation of this dark world. In a government employees’ neighbourhood in New Delhi, there lived a rugged, handsome and mysterious bache-
lor about whom his neighbours knew nothing. That was because he was India’s top spy, an officer with the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India’s external intelligence agency. This man was known even in official corridors as TIGER (Salman Khan). Tiger is sent on a relatively easy and safe mission to Dublin, Ireland to observe a scientist of Indian origin who is suspected of sharing his research findings with the Pakistan defence establishment. Tiger attempts to meet the scientist but is not successful. He tries to befriend the scientist’s part time home caretaker, Zoya (Katrina Kaif). As Tiger begins to get closer to Zoya, he begins to discover his human side. For the first time in his life Tiger falls in love. What follows is a tumultuous journey that Tiger and Zoya embark upon, battling the dark world of intelligence and espionage that forbids its soldiers from falling in love. Set for a release date of August 15, just like Salman’s previous films, this movie is sure to become a blockbuster hit.

Celina on her twins, hubby Pet er and the joy of motherhood Yummy-mummy Celina Jaitly was in Mumbai recently with her twin babies Winston and Viraaj and hubby dearest Peter Haag. Firstly Celina, welcome back to India, how are the babies Winston and Viraaj and your hubby Peter liking India? Peter has always loved India and Winston and Viraaj have already besides Mumbai been to their grandparents place in Mhow (M.P.) and they seem to love army cantonments better then cities we have noticed. You’ve settled in Dubai post your marriage to Peter. How would you compare life in Dubai vis-a-vis Mumbai (India)? Both cities have their own pace. Dubai is a concrete paradise which has given me the gift of a wonderful husband and two naughty brats while Mumbai is the city of dreams. No one goes empty handed from Mumbai...paupers become millionaires and talents become stars. Your babies are just 4 months old, how have these last 4 months been for you and Peter? If we were to make a movie on our last four months it would be called ‘Sleepless in Dubai’ (laughs). Despite all the agonies and ecstasies’ of being parents of twins, we enjoy the whole experience of being parents and want to have many more children. How would you say becoming a mother has changed you as a person? Motherhood has made me discover things about myself I never knew. I feel complete, whole and sexier then ever before. It is amazing to be a mom. It is like having added a whole new wonderful dimension to my womanhood. I see myself more patient and have a new found respect for my own mother and every other mother in this world. I also realized there was no way to be a perfect mother and a million ways to be a good one. We all know that Winston and Viraaj are twins, yet if you had to differentiate them with respect to some of their unique traits, what would you say? Winston and Viraaj are not identical twins. One has grey-brown eyes and the other hazel coloured eyes. They are fraternal twins with distinct personalities of their own and yet how similar and close they are is
amazing. If one gets hiccups the other gets them too. While sleeping their hand position and head direction is brilliantly coordinated.” Twins” truly are nature’s miracles. There is great pleasure and enjoyment in parenting multiples, every proud moment is multiplied and every simple joy is magnified. Considering both are boys, are they more closer to Peter or are they mamma’s boys? From the very beginning Peter and I have believed in ‘team work’. We do not play ‘good cop-bad-cop’... they both are equally close to us and we also ensure they both get equal attention from both parents.
“Motherhood has made me discover things about myself I never knew...” August 2012 Edition
How would you describe Peter as a father? Is he a hands-on dad? Peter is a very good father. My husband has been my pillar of strength. I could not have made it through the highs and lows of motherhood and pregnancy at all without him. His unconditional devotion and love to me despite his very busy schedule as a hotelier was extremely moving. Even though he always joked ‘my wife is having twins and I am having a breakdown’. You even opened Twitter handles for your babies... quite innovative must say...whose idea was that? The problem I have faced as an actor and beauty queen
is that when it comes to the world wide web many people run this racket of stealing your domain names, original proposed twitter handles etc., and then when you need it for your self you have to pay thousands of dollars to buy your own name back. Hence the moment they were born Peter took all necessary precautions to safeguard their original names so that no one can misuse them. It was Peter’s idea. You are back to work with your endorsement shoots, how do you manage juggling between work and babies so early? Thanks to my two mothers, (my mom and my momin-law)…my adorable friends and most of all a very supportive husband, the twins are always very well looked after. I love the whole aspect of adding glamour to motherhood. Why not? Moms of twins should be hotter with double the blessings. Look at Angelina Jolie, she is still WOW. Finally, what’s in store as far as films are concerned? Your fans are curious to see you back in films. Is that happening in the near future? I am very eager to get back to films however will start only once the babies are past 6 months. I have a couple of crossover projects signed and I am looking at producing and acting in hilarious tummy tickling comedies.

Ranbir to croon ‘Jumma Chumma’? T
he Ranbir Kapoor - Deepika Padukone starrer Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has been making headlines for the past few days. Now yet again, the Dharma Productions film has come into the spotlight as reportedly the super-hit track ‘Jumma Chumma De De’ from Amitabh Bachchan starrer Hum will be recreated in the film. The original, which was a duet, composed by LaxmikantPyarelal, and sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy and Sudesh Bhosle featured Big B along with Kimi Katkar. The modern day version of this song will feature Ranbir and the actor will also be singing a few lines himself in the song. Apparently, the makers wanted naughty, perky rhythms and lines that would suit Ranbir, and hence settled for the colourful track. Though sources in Dharma refuse to comment on the track’s inclusion, Adarsh Gupta, Business Head, Saregama, has stated that the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani team has acquired the rights of the chartbuster. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is an upcoming romance film directed by Ayan Mukherji under Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. Aditya Roy Kapoor and Kalki Koechlin play supporting roles.

In fact Aamir was scheduled to leave for Chicago to shoot for Dhoom 3 on the night of August 3.
With Raksha Bandhan coming up, his initial plan was to celebrate the festival on August 2 and leave the next day.
However, it turned out that Aamir’s entire family had planned a lavish

When Aamir heard about the party, he requested Victor (director of Dhoom 3) and Aditya Chopra if he could leave for the US a day later. On his part, Aamir didn’t want to disrupt the shooting schedule. Victor and Aditya however were more than accommodating and felt Aamir could join the team later on August 6, without any issues.

Bridegrooms and Brides

dvertisements in the printed, display or electronic media everywhere are required to follow certain rules and regulations. Had these regulations been permissive, a matrimonial agency must have given an advertisement outside a supermarket in bold letters ‘BRIDEGROOMS AND BRIDES’ and seen the unending three queues of 1. Parents (of aspirant boys and girls) 2. Young Boys (aspirants to become bridegrooms) 3. Young girls (aspirants to become brides) who would in most case like to avail the earliest opportunity of marrying their eligible sons and daughters and still more young boys and girls would be keen to marry in the light of their emerging sexual urge even forgetting all norms of the selection process currently inhibiting their decisions. Unfortunately for them all the practice is not going to ease. Child marriages in India are still common. “Community Marriages” to solemnize marriage of a large number of couples at one session on a particular day are also held in certain areas to facilitate matters socially and economically. Voluntary agencies, religious organisations or the KHAP panchayats do try to impose restrictions that are fair to them. Instances have been quoted when in certain areas the pregnant women had negotiated the marriage of the “to be born child” subject to the serious caste restrictions applicable till the enforcement of the Hindu Marriage Act 1955. The said Act has broadly provided for 1. Minimum age at marriage for both boys and girls (21 & 18 yrs) 2. Laxity in caste restrictions of the aspirants 3. Bar on second marriage in case of living

Registration of marriage The provisions are a landmark by itself but the conditions are not binding on would be couples unless the affected party has taken the case to the court of law. The resultant effect being that the child marriages continue to be performed in large number and that the Registration of Marriages is confined to a limited percentage of people only in selected urban areas. With the expansion of education among the next generation, opening of employment avenues for girls, the rising cost of living, higher ambitions in life and media exposure, a growing number of aspirants do not want only a marriage partner but something beyond like: 1. Young age 2. Beautiful features and fair complexion 3. Good height and balanced weight 4. Adequate qualifications and job prospects 5. Adjustable nature 6. Family status , expensive marriage+ dowry In the urban areas the parents continue to explore chances for best alliances for their children through the formal and informal contacts, media advertisements, websites and the matrimonial agencies. For the low success rate, the obvious reasons are the lack of 1. Good knowledge of Communication 2. Serious efforts
3. Adequate Experience. 4. Ample time 5. Sufficient Finance 6. Negotiated Settlement Process. The boy and the girl were allowed to discuss any relevant point that they wanted in the adjoining room. They went there and immediately came with a response “we have fixed a meeting outside for tomorrow and will let you know thereafter.” Tomorrow the news
came that they have mutually agreed to approve the proposal and that the arrangements for the marriage can now be discussed and finalised. Accordingly the date for the marriage was fixed and the marriage solemnized with great pomp and show. I asked the then “Bridegroom and Bride” a month before as to how they felt now about the choice of their partner made 24 years before? They said “we are 100 % satisfied.”

Vivek Oberoi vs. Vivek Oberoi Will Sonakshi’s luck save V Shahid’s career?
Vivek Oberoi
ivek Oberoi hasn’t had a film release for almost two years now [RAKHT CHARITRA was his last release]. But come October and the actor will have two films vying for audience attention. What puts Vivek in an awkward situation is that the two films in question, JAYANTABHAI KI LUV STORY and KLPD - KISMAT LOVE PAISA DILLI are slated for release on the same day, on 5 October. Of course, it goes without saying that no actor would like to have two films clashing on the same date, but as things stand today, the respective producers, Kumar Taurani and Amit Chandra, respectively are not ready to budge from that date. “Picture ek hi aani chahiye,” Kumar Taurani informs me, “Well, it’s not a great idea to have two films of the same actor releasing on the same date. It’s not good for the producer, it’s not good for the actor as well. I can talk about JAYANTABHAI KI LUV STORY, it’s definitely arriving on 5 October.” Amit Chandra, the producer of KLPD - KISMET LOVE PAISA DILLI, echoes similar sentiments. However, Amit made a formal announcement of the release date of his film at an event on Sunday, when he unveiled the first look of the film. But the question is, is it healthy trend to have two releases on the same day? “It’s not. Ideally, there should be a substantial gap between two films. Come to think of it, how would an actor promote two films simultaneously? Wouldn’t it confuse the audience?” Amit reasons. Has Amit spoken to Kumar Taurani about it? “Yes, I did... I hope he blinks first [smiles]. I hope he’s sweet enough to shift his film ahead,” Amit states. What is Vivek’s stance on the entire thing? “I guess, Vivek wants Kumar-ji and me to sort it out amongst ourselves,” Amit adds. Let’s see who blinks first!

Murray thrashes Federer to win gold at London Olympics fael Nadal thrashed him for the loss of just four games in the 2008 French Open final. For Federer, a doubles gold medallist with Stanislas Wawrinka in Beijing in 2008, this final was meant to be the crowning glory of his career. Instead, Federer, who will be 35 by the time the Rio Games are in full swing in 2016, may wonder if he will ever get a chance to win the Golden Slam of all four majors and singles gold. Murray had hoped the final would be staged with the Centre Court roof open as he felt his Wimbledon defeat was in part due to Federer thriving after a switch to indoor play when rain hit when the match was level at one-set all. He got his wish as the heavy rain that lashed the All England Club earlier in the day relented just before the scheduled start. And when Murray gave Federer two break points in the opening game, his response to the crisis, a series of perfectlyplaced winners, was symbolic of his impressive form this week. The Scot’s new-found maturity and increased muscularity are a potent package and he set about Federer with controlled fury in the sixth game. A fine serve from Federer saved the first of two break points, but Murray came up with a searing return on the next and

Britain’s Andy Murray demolished Roger Federer 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 in the Olympic men’s final on Sunday to win his first gold medal and avenge his Wimbledon final defeat against the world number one. Just four weeks after breaking down in tears when Federer shattered his hopes of a first Wimbledon title, Murray returned to Centre Court to rout the Swiss great in just one hour and 56 minutes. Murray, who has denied Federer a coveted first singles gold, could yet finish the Games with two gold medals as he will be back in action in the mixed doubles final with partner Laura Robson against Max Mirnyi and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus later on Sunday. It is the greatest moment of Murray’s career to date and just reward for an astonishing display that must rank alongside the best ever seen on the sport’s most hallowed court. The 25-year-old Scot, beaten in three Grand Slam finals by Federer, has been in superb form all week, but even he can’t have dreamed he would win gold like this. Not only did the world number four do it by beating the Swiss for the first time since 2010, Murray also handed the 17-time Grand Slam winner his heaviest defeat in a major final since Ra-
the Swiss could only direct his forehand into the net. Everything that Federer threw at Murray was sent back with interest by the Scot, who clinched the first set with a second break when he smashed a backhand winner down the line. Murray had taken the first set in the Wimbledon final as well before missing a chance to break in the second and then running out of steam. He wasn’t going to make the same mistake again. In the second game of the
second set, Federer put an easy smash into the net before the Scot enjoyed a slice of luck as two net cords in quick succession went his way to secure the break. Federer tried to stem the tide in the next game, an epic struggle that featured six break points for the Swiss. But Murray wouldn’t be denied and found the right response on each occasion. The Swiss great had never been given such a torrid time on his favourite Centre Court. He looked shell-shocked by Mur-
ray’s assault and served a double-fault on break point in the next game to give the Scot his eighth successive game. With the second set in the bag, Murray kept his foot on the gas in the third and delivered the knockout blow when he produced a stunning winner to break for a 3-2 lead. Federer had nothing left in response and Murray sealed the win with two thunderous aces before clambering into the players’ box to embrace his family and backroom staff.

irat Kohli achieved his career-best ranking as he gained one position to be at second spot in the latest ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen, which was released on Sunday. Kohli, who entered the India-Sri Lanka five-match ODI series as the third-ranked batsman, climbed to no. 2 following his player-of-theseries performance, in which he scored 296 runs. The former India Under-19 captain, who led his side to victory in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2008 in Malaysia, also achieved a career-best rating of 866 after the fourth ODI, in which he scored 128 not out in India’s six-wicket victory. Kohli now trails South Africa’s Hashim Amla by 13 ratings points and can potentially top the batting chart if the Proteas opener fails to perform in the five-ODI series against England, starting on August 24 in Cardiff. Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has also broken into the top 10, which means India
now has three batsmen inside the top 10 with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni sitting in fifth position. Gambhir scored 258 runs in the series and has been rewarded with a jump of seven places, which has put him in 10th position. Other Indian batsmen, who climbed up the order include Virender Sehwag in 26th (up by one) and Suresh Raina in 30th (up by two), while Rohit Sharma has slipped eight places to be at 54th. There is no movement in the top 20 of the ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers. In the ICC ODI Championship table, India’s 4-1 victory has helped them move up the ranking. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men now sit in second place when ratings points are calculated to within the decimal point, despite being on equal points with Australia. The annual ICC ODI Championship update will now take place. The exact table after the annual update will be confirmed on August 8.

Barcelona and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez admitted that big-spending PSG (Paris SaintGermain) will be a major contender in this season’s Champions League. PSG have boosted their team with the addition of Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (above).
arcelona and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez on Saturday admitted that big-spending Paris Saint-Germain will be a major contender in this season’s Champions League. “PSG are a very good side, they have signed some top level players like Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to add to the good players that were already there,” said Xavi, who has only just started pre-season training after helping Spain to glory at Euro 2012. “They are another candidate for the Champions League. They have set themselves the objective of winning the Champions League in the short to medium term and they have the financial means.” It is the French capital club’s signing of Sweden star Ibrahimovic that has really sent shockwaves through the continent’s other leading clubs, and Xavi knows all about
the threat posed by ‘Ibra’, who played for the Catalans in 200910. “He is a great signing,” said the 32-year-old. “He performed fantastically for us and he is a top level player. “He can bring a lot to them, and is the signing they needed to go on and win the French title.” Ibrahimovic left the Camp Nou for AC Milan under a cloud two years ago after a reported fallingout with coach Pep Guardiola, but Xavi defended the Swede’s record with Barca. “I don’t think he had a disappointing season. We won La Liga and got to the semi-finals of the Champions League, he scored important goals and we had a good understanding with him on the pitch and in the dressing room,” Xavi said. “He only stayed one year but he didn’t leave behind a bad image.”

as saying by Xinhua Thursday. Phelps retained a third straight Olympic gold in the 200m individual medley Thursday, becoming the first male swimmer to win the same event at three successive Games. The effort last night increased his medal count to 20.
“It is a relief to win an individual gold,” the 29-year-old said after the race, adding he was so proud to be the first-ever to defend a third straight Olympic title. “It’s special for me, indeed,” he said. After failing to defend his
200m butterfly and 400m individual medley at London Olympics, Phelps had an epic triumph over compatriot Ryan Lochte in the 200m medley final. Phelps led all the way to power home in 1:54.27, halfbody-length clear over Lochte to prove he is still the man to
beat. Lochte bagged a silver to add to his five medals in London. Describing Lochte as his greatest racer over the years, Phelps said they pushed each other over the years and Lochte had brought the best out of him.

Ayurveda for Erectile Dysfunction E
rectile dysfunction is inability to keep or develop an erection of penis during intercourse. Many people still believe that it is due to physical reasons such as regular body wearing process, but not due to any psychological or personality problems. According to Ayurvedic medicine it is a combination of both physical and psychological in origin. Developing or holding erection is depends on the proper blood and nerve supply to the genital organs. Generally, a sex stimulus activates the nerves that help in the dilatation of blood vessels, which in turn will allow more flow of blood in to the veins of corpora cavernosa (Sponge like shafts surrounding the penis). Valves inside the blood vessel prevent the back flow of the blood, so the hardness will be maintain until the removal of sexual stimulus. Around almost 100 million men are suffering from ED. In Australia, it is estimated that around 1million men are suffering from ED and it is still growing due to aging population. ED is largely a disease of older population.

According to the research conducted by National Institutes of Health, a majority of men at some point in their life experience occasional failure to achieve erection which can occur for a variety of reasons such as drinking too much alcohol or from being extremely tired. Failure to achieve erection less than 20% of the time is not unusual and medical treatment is rarely
needed. But the causes for this minor problem might lead to a permanent condition where failure to achieve erection occurs more than 50% of the time. Once this stage of erectile dysfunction is reached, medical treatment is required to reverse the situation. Approximately 5 percent of 40-year-old men and between 15 and 25 percent of 65-year-old men experience erectile dysfunction on
a long-term basis. Ayurveda, the science of life, prevention and longevity, is the oldest and most holistic and comprehensive medical system available. Its fundamentals can be found in Ancient Indian scriptures called the Vedas - the ancient Indian books of wisdom written over 5,000 years ago. Ayurveda uses the inherent principles of nature to help maintain health in a
person by keeping the individual’s body, mind, and spirit in perfect equilibrium with nature. Vajikarana is one of the eight major specialties of Ayurveda. (Astanga Ayurveda) Vajikarana is “a process or a drug, which make a man sexually as strong as a horse and able to copulate for long and frequently with many wives and partners.” Vajikarana prescribes the therapeutic use of various aphrodisiacs and tonic preparations for enhancing the reproductive capabilities and vigor of men while strengthening the body and overall well-being. Vajikarana therapy combine a proprietary herbal formula based on centuries old ayurvedic wisdom with advice on diet, exercise, mental training, and relaxation to help men reach their peak and overcome sexual concerns through safe, natural means. Eat smaller bites to lose weight
A
team of scientists led by one of Indian origin have suggested that cutting food into smaller pieces can help dieters shed those extra kilos. Researchers found that both humans and animals judge the amount of food they are eating by the number of pieces in front of them. A serving cut into several pieces will appear more filling even if contains the same number of calories. During the research, the scientists observed that when rats were trained to as-

Even college students who were given a bagel cut into quarters and then fed lunch 20 minutes later ate less than those given an uncut bagel. “Cutting up energy-dense foods into smaller pieces may be beneficial to dieters who wish to make their meal more satiating,” the Daily Express quoted Devina Wadhera, lead researcher at Arizona State University, as saying.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN IN MONSOON
W
hile the monsoon brings a welcome respite from the summer heat, it also poses
a lot of problems to healthy skin. Monsoon is the time where your skin behaves a little
strange and is often unstable; suddenly it’s gets oily or become dry and dehydrated. Hence it is very necessary
that you take care of your skin during this season in order to look fresh and beautiful. During monsoon, a lot of airborne and waterborne microbes are let loose. So a good anti-bacterial toner will go a long way to prevent skin infections and eruptions. Antibacterial face wash too will do the trick. You need to mildly tone a dry skin since the pore size is small. Use five drops chamomile oil in a one tsp milk to tone dry skin and ten drops Lavender oil in one tsp water to tone an oily skin. Moisturising in the rain is as important as it is in summer: Monsoon can mean a de-moisturising effect on dry skin and an over-hydrating effect on oily skin. The skin gets wet often and with the constant wetting and drying, a lot of dehydration (yes, in the rains!) takes place. That explains the itchy feeling one gets during monsoons. Use a non-water based moisturiser, if you happen to get wet often. Otherwise a water- based moisturiser will prove helpful. Dry skin: You can use almond paste or honey cleanser. Take 10 crushed
almonds and make a paste and add two tea spoon of honey. Massage on face for five to seven minutes, rinse face and pat dry. Oily skin: You need a very mild cleanser to get the dead cells and dirt off from skin. Use pure oatmeal scrub to cleanse oily skin or use ripe papaya pulp as a mild exfoliate. Make up for day and night: Make up for day and night is pretty much the same. Try and keep it minimalistic and natural. However, in the day you can use pastels where as in the night you can use deeper colours. The same holds true for your lipstick.

HAND, FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE >>
Raj Kothuru
WHAT IS IT? Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common viral illness of infants and children 10 years and younger. Children are more likely to be at risk for infection and illness because they are less likely than adults to have antibodies to protect them. The disease causes fever and blister-like eruptions in the mouth with or without skin rash. HFMD is often confused with hoof-and-mouth disease, a disease of animals. These two diseases are not related and are caused by different viruses. SYMPTOMS: All symptoms may not be present, but the main symptoms include fever, mouth sores, and a blistery rash. It can begin with low appetite, sore throat, feeling sick, and a low fever. Painful mouth sores usually develop 1-2 days after the fever begins. These small red spots often blister and then often become ulcers. And can be on the gums, inside the cheeks, or on the tongue. A non itchy skin rash develops on the palms and soles, sometimes the buttocks
the virus can remain in the body for several weeks. HFMD is not transmitted to or from pets or other animals. TREATMENT: There is no specific treatment or prevention medication for HFMD in orthodox medicine. Only symptoms are treated to provide relief from pain from mouth sores and from fever and aches.
over 1-2 days. CAUSES: HFMD is caused by viruses that belong to the enterovirus genus. Infection caused by Coxsackievirus A16 is mild and patients recover in 7 to 10 days. However, there are more complicated cases involving the nervous system due to HFMD caused by other strains of virus like enterovirus 71.
SPREAD OF THE DISEASE: Infection is spread from person to person by direct contact with infectious virus via nose and throat secretions, saliva, blister fluid, and stool of infected persons. The virus is most often spread by persons with unwashed, viruscontaminated hands and by contact with virus-contaminated surfaces. Infected persons are most contagious during the first week of the illness, however,
HOMEOPATHIC HELP: There is no conventional treatment or prevention of HFMD. Homeopathy, as we know, does not treat a disease. It treats an individual suffering with a particular set of symptoms constitutionally by taking into consideration, physical, mental and emotional set up and the presenting symptoms. Homeopathic remedies assist in reducing the severity and length of the symptoms without any side effects. LIFE STYLE HELP TOWARD PREVENTION: Good hygiene definitely helps
limit the spread of the disease. Hands are to be washed frequently and especially after changing diapers and after using the wash room. All surfaces should be regularly infected. Close contact (kissing, hugging, sharing eating utensils or cups, etc.) should be avoided temporarily with the child suffering from HFMD. Child should be kept hydrated, with plenty of water, unpasteurized milk, freshly made juice, popsicles that are made from fresh juice and the like. Children suffering from HFMD should be kept away from schools and child care till they are well as it can spread very quickly to other children. Regular use of homeopathic remedies will increase the child’s immunity and prevent future occurrence of such infectious diseases. You may ask your personal query to Raj Kothuru (Homeopath) via email drraj@aurahealth.com.au or phone 0425 761 826 / (03) 9077 5044 regarding any of your health problems. You will be offered authentic information and an opinion as to what best can be done pertaining to your ailment.

Fake laugh at bad joke a terrible thing!
T
hose who have almost perfected the art of fake laughter over the years may have wasted their time, as a new study has found that even the most realistic efforts to feign amusement does not fool any one. Scientists say that people are ‘extremely good’ at distinguishing even the most realistic sounding fake giggles. It found that volunteers could almost always tell the difference between someone genuinely laughing and what the experts called as ‘social laughter’. Sophie Scott, professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College London, carried out brain scans on volunteers, who were made to listen to expressions of disgust, a real belly laugh and a realistic fake one. The volunteers were almost always able to identify a false laugh, she said.
“Most of our laughter is posed,” the Daily Mail quoted Scott as saying. “We use it as a way of keeping conversation going, as a way of showing our friends we like them or impressing people. “They know it’s not genuine, but I don’t know if they always mind. You are appreciating what they are doing and getting a positive affiliation going,” Scott said. The MRI scans also exposed how hearing real and fake laughter activates two different areas of our brains. Fake laughter triggers more brain activity - in the medial prefrontal cortex, associated with problem-solving - as we try to work out the reason why the person is doing it. Genuine laughter simply activates auditory areas in the temporal lobe - where we process all sound.
