PMO seeks report on Visva-Bharati outrage
T
Shantiniketan schoolgirl made to drink urine for bedwetting
he Prime Minister’s office on Monday took serious note of an incident where a Class-V student of Visva-Bharati’s Patha
Bhavan school was forced to lick her urine as punishment for bedwetting. The PM is the university’s chancellor and his office has asked for a report.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights too has slapped a notice on the state government asking for a response within 10 days. As the incident sparked national outrage on Monday, Uma Poddar, the hostel warden accused of subjecting the child to extreme humiliation, got bail hours after she was arrested. Sparking a wave of anger among guardians and Santiniketan residents, the traumatized girl’s parents too were arrested and charged with criminal intimidation. But on Monday, when the case came up before additional chief judicial magistrate Pijush Ghosh, he gave the parents unconditional bail and pulled up the police for “going soft” on Poddar. Calling the incident “deplorable and highly condemnable”, Ghosh directed VisvaBharati to bear the expenses for the victim’s treatment and realise it from Poddar’s salary. The court expressed dismay over the way Visva-Bharati had handled the incident. Poddar allegedly sprinkled salt on the soiled bedsheet and forced the 10-year-old child to lick it on Saturday to punish her for bedwetting. The incident has left the child so traumatized that she insists she won’t go back to the hostel ever again. “I want to
move to another school if I’m not allowed to attend classes from home,” she told TOI. “I begged and pleaded with the warden not to make me lick the soiled bedsheet, but she didn’t listen. When I complained to my mother, the warden taunted me and demanded to know why I had called my mother,” she said. Soon after the court order, Visva-Bharati vice-chancellor Sushanta Dattagupta told reporters that a committee probing the allegation against Poddar “has found substance in the girl’s complaint”. The incident happened in front of her roommates, the V-C said, adding that Poddar had been suspended. But the action is too little, too late, guardians say. The incident has scared other children of the hostel, too. The charges against Poddar are too light, they say — a view the Bolpur court seemed to share. Poddar has merely been booked for wrongful detention and ‘a malignant act that could spread infection’ (IPC Sections 343, 269 and 270). The court held that police should have booked her under the Juvenile Justice Act. Bolpur lawyers also feel that such “torture” should have been dealt with all seriousness under Section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act.
On the other hand, the victim’s parents face serious charges like criminal trespass and intimidation, based on a complaint from Visva-Bharati. The university’s FIR says the parents damaged public property when they came to see their “tormented” ward at Karabi Girl’s Hostel on Saturday night. Visva-Bharati spokesperson Amrit Sen has claimed that they did not mention any parent’s name in their compliant but Birbhum SP Rishikesh Meena on Monday said that the complaint mentions “five names, including those of the girl’s parents”. “We arrested the parents on the basis of the university’s complaint,” he said. Asked about the court censuring the police for going soft on the accused, Meena said: “We frame charge on the basis of the complaint. The sections imposed against the hostel warden were based on the compliant lodged by the parents. We may include other sections if the court directs us to do so.” State education minister Bratya Basu is writing to HRD minister Kapil Sibal to take action against those involved in the case. “The state government does not have jurisdiction over a central university like Visva-Bharati,” Basu said.

Air India plane lands in Delhi; ‘false alarm’ led aircraft to land in Pakistan, officials say
A
n Air India relief plane has landed at New Delhi airport with 122 passengers of another flight that made an emergency landing in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province early on Monday morning after its alarm light started blipping. The Air India Airbus A320 sent to pick up the stranded passengers took off from Nawabshah airport in Sindh shortly after 3pm on July 9, Pakistani officials said. A team of engineers flew in on the relief aircraft to repair the Air India plane that made the emergency landing at Nawabshah airport at 3.37am. A team of technical experts from Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority assisting its Indian counterparts. Earlier in the day, the captain of the Air India flight going from Abu Dhabi to New Delhi sought permission for an emergency landing after emergency light showed a problem with the hydraulic system while in Pakistani airspace. The aircraft landed safely and the flight’s 122 passengers and eight crew members were unharmed, civil aviation authority spokesman Pervez George said. Though Pakistani authorities had offered to allow the passengers to disembark and use the Nawabshah airport’s lounges, the captain preferred to have them remain on board, officials said. The captain asked for drinking water and this was supplied to the aircraft, they said. Defence secretary Nargis Sethi had instructed Civil Aviation Authority chief
Nadeem Khan Yousufzai to provide all possible facilities and assistance to the crew and passengers of the Air India plane at Nawabshah. Air India engineers, who were flown to Nawabshah airport in Pakistan to attend
to an Airbus A-319 that had landed under emergency conditions on Monday, havev found that the cockpit panel had emitted a “false alarm” about a technical problem. “There was nothing wrong with the hydraulic system of the aircraft and,
apparently the cockpit panel emitted false alarm making red lights to blip,” airline officials said here. “However, even such a technical glitch has to be corrected and that is being done,” they said.
Scarless operations via ‘spider tech’
T
he humble navel has been an onscreen scorcher in many Bollywood and south Indian movies but now, the belly button is all set to don a more responsible role the scarless route to treat common abdominal conditions like appendix, gall bladder stones and the weight loss bariatric surgery. Surgeons in Delhi will for the first time in Asia Pacific use what is called a ‘spider technology’ — a single flexible laparoscopy instrument that
July 2012 Edition
will do away with the need for five incisions or scars for any abdominal intervention. Instead, the rod like machine will enter through the belly button and open up like an umbrella within the abdomen, providing the surgeon with several instruments with 360-degree range of motion along with small cameras. Once the procedure is completed, the system closes up and is removed through the same incision.

Girls outnumber boys in birth through IVF
G
irls outnumber boys among children born through assisted reproduction in in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) centers in the city. Pune may have ranked low on the sex
ratio scale in the 2011 Census, but the trend is quite the reverse in case of test tube babies. Seven IVF centres in the city have shown a heartening trend - total 250 girls were born
against 242 boys in the last three years - between 2009-10 and 2011-12. This is revealed in the data collated by Pune Municipal Corporation’s health department. from seven prominent IVF centres
Possible murder-suicide in Melbourne
in last one month. “We had collated the data from prominent IVF centres to ascertain the sex ratio in these clinics. It shows birth ratio is in favour of girls,” S T Pardeshi, city health chief, PMC told TOI on Monday. There are 11 IVF centres in Pune. The health department collated and compiled data from seven prominent IVF centres between June 15 and July 6. Gynaecologist and infertility expert Sunita Tandulwadkar, who heads the IVF centre at Ruby Hall Clinic, said, “There is no method to choose between a boy or a girl in IVF and it depends on pure chance. Among the IVF deliveries we carried out between 2009 and 2011, 30 were boys and 32 were girls.” In IVF, an egg is taken from a woman and fertilised with a man’s sperm in the lab before putting it back into the womb of a woman. Asked whether IVF can select sex of the foetus, Tandulwadkar said, “We cannot select the sex of the sperm in IVF by simply looking at the sperm through microscope. Since we can not determine the X or Y chromosome by studying the sperm under microscope, there is no room for sex selection.” Tandulwadkar added: “To select the sex, one needs to have pre-conception genetic diagnostics (PGD) facility. There
may be four or five such centers in India where the PGD facility is available . The main objective of using PGD is to prevent genetic abnormality that runs in family from transferring it to a child. The procedure is very expensive. If the cost of IVF goes between Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.4 lakh, availing PGD will cost an additional one lakh. Naturally, it is not affordable to many.” Sharing the view, senior gynaecologist Sanjay Gupte, also a member of the Central Supervisory Board of the Pre-conception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, said, “There is no question of sex ratio being manipulated by IVF clinicians. There is no method to choose between a boy or a girl, it depends on pure chance. Patients also do not consider using IVF as a method of trying to have a boy or girl, since the procedure is used to try and maximise the chance of pregnancy.” He added: “Only 0.1% or one in 5,000 babies are born using assisted reproduction and any gender changes would not have a huge social impact. There is no evidence I’m aware of to show that sex ratios at a national level have changed as a consequence of assisted conception procedures.”

‘Facebook, Twitter feed anxiety, make you insecure’
C
these sites make study
an’t think of a day without Facebook or Twitter? Beware, as popular social networking feed anxiety and can you feel insecure, a new has found. A survey of
hundreds of social network site users found that more than half of them admitted that the sites have changed their behaviour, and half of them said their lives had been altered for the worse. Most commonly, those who
suffered a negative impact from social media said their confidence fell after comparing their own achievements to those of friends online. Two-thirds said they found it hard to relax completely or to sleep after spending time on the
sites, while one quarter of them said they had been left facing difficulties in their relationships or workplace after becoming confrontational online, the Daily Telegraph reported. The research, conducted
by Salford Business School at the University of Salford in UK, also demonstrated the addictive powers of internet, with 55% of people saying they felt “worried or uncomfortable” when they could not access their Facebook or email accounts. More than 60% of people said they felt compelled to turn off electronic gadgets in order to have a break, with one in three of those surveyed saying they switched the devices off several times each day. “If you are predisposed to anxiety it seems that the pressures from technology act as a tipping point, making people feel more insecure and more overwhelmed,” said Nicky Lidbetter of charity Anxiety UK, which commissioned the poll. She said the charity was surprised by the high proportion of people who found that the only way to ensure a break from the demands of their devices was to switch them off, as they were not capable of simply ignoring their mobile phones, BlackBerry devices and computers. Dr Linda Blair, a clinical psychologist said many people suffered increased anxiety because they failed to take charge of the demands being placed on them.
Cannabis can be used as a tool to fight obesity
C
annabis plants could be a new weapon in the fight against obesity, scientists have claimed after they found two compounds in the plants’ leaves that increase the amount of energy the body burns. Test in animals have already shown the compounds — THCV and cannabidiol — can help treat type two diabetes while also helping to reduce levels of cholesterol in the blood stream and fat in key organs like the liver.
July 2012 Edition
Now, scientists are conducting clinical trials in about 200 patients in the hope of producing a drug that can be used to treat patients suffering from “metabolic syndrome”, where diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity combine to increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Dr Steph Wright, director of research and development at GW Pharmaceuticals which is developing the drugs, said: “We are conducting four Phase 2a clinical trials and we expect some results later this year. The results in animal models have been very encouraging. We are interested in how the drugs effect the fat distribution and utilization in the body as a treatment for metabolic diseases,” Wright was quoted as saying by the Daily Telegraph. Although cannabis is an illegal drug, GW Pharmaceuticals has obtained a licence to grow the plant in specially-designed greenhouses. It produces plants that were bred to express different quantities of compounds known as cannabinoids. It’s already developing drugs that can treat multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. Although cannabis is better known for inducing hunger in those who smoke it, known as the munchies, when the scientists examined two compounds, THCV and cannabidiol, they were found to have an appetite suppressing effect.

“I killed Saleena after a fight over her relationships with other men. Saleena used to humiliate me by ordering me around to do odd jobs like cooking, driving and washing clothes. While I tolerated the humiliation, I could not stand her relationships with men and, therefore, in the fit of rage, I killed her,” Parvez Tak, prime accused in starlet Laila Khan and her family’s alleged kidnap and murder, told Mumbai police on Monday. The arrested Kashmiri forest contractor’s startling statement overturns the police’s suspicion that the Khan family was killed over their properties. The family owns two flats in the city, one shop in Oshiwara and a bungalow at Igatpuri in Nashik. A police officer, though, told TOI, “We are taking Tak’s statement with a pinch of salt as he is a cheat who has dodged the police for a while. He had initially confessed to killing the Khan family before the J&K police but later retracted it.” Tak told interrogators that he, along with his associates, including one Kashmiri watchman Shakir Hussain, killed Laila and her five family members and buried their bodies behind Laila’s Igatpuri bungalow. He allegedly killed all of them as Laila had witnessed her mother’s murder. Following this
development, the crime branch has fanned out two teams to Igatpuri. The teams are working with Igatpuri police and have taken along sniffer dogs to trace the bodies. Sources said if the police are unable to find them, Tak will be taken to Igatpuri. In another development, the crime branch has picked up three drivers from Goti village in Nashik who are believed to have been hired by Tak to ferry Saleena’s Scorpio and Mitubishi Outlander to J&K. Of the three, two have been identified as Mehboob Shaikh and Johny Girdar. The three have also been brought to Mumbai and were interrogated at the police headquarters. Tak, who was arrested by the J&K police last month, was brought to the city by Mumbai crime branch on Sunday night. He was produced before the 37th Esplanade Court, which remanded him to police custody till July 19. Last year, Laila and five of her family members, went missing from her Oshiwara home. The Mitsubishi Outlander, registered in the name of Laila’s mother, was found by J&K police in Kishtwar. It was used for ferrying explosives used in Delhi high court blasts of September 2011. The last person to have used the vehicle was Tak,

who reportedly has links with LeT militants. Sources said crime branch officials are also questioning Saleena’s second husband, Asif Shaikh, who has told the police that he had divorced Laila’s mother
five years ago and was unaware of the family’s whereabouts. It was Saleena’s first husband, Nadir Patel, who filed a missing persons complaint with the Oshiwara police saying his
daughter, along with her siblings, mother Saleena Patel and stepfather Asif Sheikh, had gone missing after leaving for Kashmir to attend a wedding in February 2011.

Hard-working dad killed in truck accident a.m. on 29 June, when Masih was sitting in his stationary car at a traffic light signal in Liverpool. The truck driver told police that his load of timber shifted, forcing the semi-trailer to roll over on a busy Liverpool intersection. The 46-year-old truck driver has been discharged from hospital last night and is today expected to give a formal statement on the accident. Masih’s distraught wife Rachel said her husband was on his way to Cabramatta to help a friend who was having some problem with his car. She said she knew something was wrong when she kept calling him and he did not answer.I spoke to him at 10 a.m., and I asked
when he would be home. He said he was on his way home,” Mrs. Masih said. Masih said that when he did not arrive by 2 p.m. she thought it was strange, but guessed he may have stopped to help another friend with their car. Crash investigator Stephen Blair said it was one of the worst accidents he had ever seen. “This rates at the top of the order, to see a horrific thing like this with the vehicle crushed nearly beyond recognition,” Inspector Blair said. “This is a tragic event that’s happened once again on our roads innocent people have been sitting in their cars and through no fault of their own have been hurt or killed,” he added.

Centre sends team to review Kaziranga floods
T
he environment and forests ministry has decided to send a team of officials from Delhi to review the situation in Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary in wake of flash floods that have inundated Assam. The announcement to send the member secretary of National Tiger Conservation Authority for a spot inspection and review comes a day after reports on the high mortality of animals in the tiger reserve falling in the floodplains of Brahmaputra river. In a release the ministry said, “During normal floods, which
are recurring feature, there is less mortality of wild animals. However, flash floods do occur due to breaches in the upper areas of Brahmaputra, which result in increased deaths of wild animals.” The ministry said, “The state (Assam) has been requested to declare the adjoining Karbi Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary as a tiger reserve to enable adequate protection with Project Tiger assistance. This would be reiterated for expediting the same. The member secretary, NTCA would be visiting the reserve along with his team for spot appraisal/review,
to strengthen the efforts by assisting the state.” It noted that, “Being located in the Brahmaputra flood plains, the reserve is prone to annual floods. However, the normal flood inundation is inherent and important aspect of the Kaziranga ecosystem to maintain the large number of water bodies (around 175) and the floral/faunal biodiversity of the area.” An assessment by the Assambased member of the National Tiger Conservation Authority M Firoz Ahmed, said that most of the rhino deaths were from the older age group, besides
calves. However, three of them have been poached. The hog deer mortality, in particular had been reported to be very high. The report had highlighted the
need for relieving the corridor areas from human pressure and avoiding change in land use pattern in the area around the park.
Many animals of the Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary are in danger due to flash flooding in the Brahmaputra flood plains.

rime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has been lauded for his pivotal role in liberalising the Indian economy, has been dubbed as an “underachiever” by a top US magazine, which says he appears “unwilling to stick his neck out” on reforms that will put the country back on growth path. Singh, 79, is featured on the cover of Time magazine’s Asia edition, which will be out next week. With his portrait in the background, the title on the cover reads ‘The Underachiever — India needs a reboot’. Is Prime Minister Manmohan Singh up to the job?’ Time’s report titled ‘A Man in Shadow’ asks, adding that apart from facing the challenges of a slowdown in economic growth, huge fiscal deficit and a falling rupee, India’s Congress party-led UPA coalition “has found itself fending off corruption scandals....” “....investors are beginning to get cold feet. Voters too are losing confidence, as rising inflation and a litany of scandals chip away at the government’s credibility,” the magazine said. Pointing towards Singh’s fall “from grace,” the magazine said, “in the past three years, the calm confidence he (Singh) once radiated has been absent. He seems unable to control his ministers and — his new, temporary portfolio at the finance ministry notwithstanding — unwilling to stick his neck out on reforms...” The Congress strongly countered the magazine’s article. “In the past eight years the UPA government headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has provided political stability, social harmony, internal cohesion, economic growth and a greater role in global affairs. This by no stretch of imagination is under achievement,” party spokesman Manish Tewari said.

he recent discovery of a particle which could most likely be Higgs boson may not change the way you play golf, but it may let you understand better the creation of the universe, its minuscule components and its all-pervading vastness. And, if you have an abiding interest in the interface of science and everyday life, it may as well tell you why you missed the 18th hole. So, it wasn’t surprising that some 8,000 scientists and students from 60 countries were peering at a maze of mathematical projections at the European Centre for Nuclear Research (Cern) near Geneva to catch a glimpse of what they hate to call the God particle. As millions of protons travelled almost at the speed of light through a 27 km circular tunnel 100 metres below the FrancoSwiss border last week, the world held its breath. But, the scientists wouldn’t say if they have found it. Finally, on July 3, there was a give away: Peter Higgs, the English theoretical physicist who predicted the existence of such a particle in the early 1960s, was invited to a conference near Geneva where the announcement was to be made the next day. We know the Higgs part of the elusive particle, but the Bose part of it remains in relative obscurity. Boson, one of the two fundamental subatomic components of particle physics - the other being fermion - was named after Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose (1894-

1974). Bose, who worked with Albert Einstein to come up with the Bose-Einstein statistics and the Bose-Einstein condensate theory, was never nominated for the Nobel. In fact, it was out of Einstein’s personal interest in Bose’s work that saw much of his work being noted, after Bose sent his papers to Einstein who translated them into German and got them published in scientific journals. Thanks to a few media reports on Bose in the wake of the Higgs boson discovery, the great man is being introduced to a vast number of Indians 38 years after his death. But, there are several Indian scientists, great in their own ways, who remain unknown to the layman and ignored by the scientific fraternity and the governments. Ask any scientist who acknowledges original research to give a list of Indians who should have got a Nobel Prize, and you will find the name G N Ramachandran (19222001) there. Though trained as a physicist, Ramachandran’s greatest contributions were to biology, where he formulated the ‘Ramachandran plots’ which every biophysicist uses while studying proteins. DOOMSDAY
VIRUS
A
bout a quarter-million computer users around the world are at risk of losing Internet access on Monday because of malicious software at the heart of a hacking scam that US authorities shut down last November. Some blogs and news reports hyped the risk of an outage, warning of a potential “blackout” and describing the Alureon malware as the “Internet Doomsday” virus. Yet experts said only a tiny fraction of computer users were
July 2012 Edition
at risk, and Internet providers would be on call to quickly restore service. They said they considered the threat to be small compared with moreprevalent viruses such as Zeus and SpyEye, which infect millions of PCs and are used to commit financial fraud. The viruses were designed to redirect Internet traffic through rogue DNS servers controlled by criminals, according to the FBI. DNS servers are computer switchboards that direct Web traffic. DNS (Domain Name System)
is an Internet service that converts user-friendly domain names into the numerical Internet protocol (IP) addresses that computers use to talk to each other. So simply put, when you enter a website url, in your web browser address bar, your computer contacts DNS servers to determine the IP address for the website. Your computer then uses this IP address to locate and connect to the website. DNS servers are operated by your Internet service provider (ISP) and are
included in your computer’s network configuration. Without DNS and DNS Servers you would not be able to access websites, send e-mail, or use any other Internet services. Since 2007, cyber criminals, under a company name ‘Rove Digital’, distributed DNS changing viruses, variously known as TDSS, Alureon, TidServ and TDL4 viruses. These criminals learnt that having access to a user’s DNS can help them redirect, or change the way a user uses the internet. This, by installing a malware on the users system that would change the computers DNS settings and redirect the user to a fradulent site. The botnet operated by Rove Digital altered user DNS settings, pointing victims to malicious DNS in data centers in the United States and across the world. What this simply did was altered the way you used the internet. The malicious DNS servers would give you fake, malicious answers, redirect you to dangerous links, alter your search results on search engines as well as promote fake and dangerous products through e-marketing.
As every web search starts with DNS, the malware showed users an altered version of the Internet. On November 8, 2011, the FBI, the NASA-OIG and Estonian police arrested several cyber criminals in “Operation Ghost Click”. The United States charged seven people for orchestrating the worldwide Internet fraud. Six - Timur Gerassimenko, 31; Dmitri Jegorov, 33; Valeri Aleksejev, 31; Konstantin Poltev, 28; Anton Ivanvov, 26; and Vladimir Tsastsin, 31 were arrested in Estonia, while the seventh- Andrey Taame, who was living in Russia, is still at large. When authorities took down the rogue servers, a federal judge in New York ordered that temporary servers be kept in place while the victims’ machines were repaired. The temporary servers were shut down at 12:01 am on Monday, July 09, 2012 which means the infected PCs that have not been fixed will no longer be able to connect to the Internet. The FBI has claimed that the virus named ‘DNS Changer’ will cause over 350,000 computers to lose web access.

Parineeti, Nargis or Diana?
N
ewbie Diana Penty is making her presence felt. Her Cocktail is yet to be released but she is pretty much turning out to be one of the most promising newcomers even though only one half of the year has gone by. So much so that now she is competing with the likes of Parineeti Chopra and Nargis Fakhri to be in contention for Sajid Nadiadwala’s next film that launches Tiger Shroff. “Casting for Tiger’s debut film is currently on and there is a slot still open for the leading lady. Sajid along with director Sabbir Khan had kept their options open though it was a given that it would be a fresh face opposite Tiger”, informs our source, “It could have been a rank newcomer or someone really new but the first choice was to go with someone who hadn’t been exposed much.” While Nargis Fakhri was being considered for the role, Parineeti Chopra turned out to be a strong contender as well, especially after Ishaqzaade. “Both have entirely different personality though that gave the makers an opportunity to play around the characterisation.
However, it had to be on either extreme. Now with Diana turning out to be quite a revelation and inside reports indicating that she has come up with a cracker of a performance in Cocktail, she is being looked at rather seriously”, the source
continues. What further helps the cause is her good mix of ‘desi’ and ‘videshi’ looks that seem to have enticed Sajid as well as Sabbir. “As such Sajid has never launched a girl in a career
lasting over two decades. He has always worked with experienced leading ladies. For that matter he hasn’t launched a hero either though Tiger is an exception. It won’t be surprising if Diana makes the cut”, adds a close associate.
However, what could go in Parineeti’s favour is the fact that her Ishaqzaade co-star Arjun Kapoor is already finalised for Sajid’s 2 States. With some stroke of luck, she too could be finding her way into the camp as well.

IIT-B students use robots to tackle daily problems
T
he BMC might get an automated solution to their problems of filling up potholes from the pan-India robotics competition E-Yantra, launched by IIT-Bombay on Tuesday. One of the tasks that will be given to the participants in the event could be to design a robot to fill potholes. What sets apart this competition from other robotics event is that participants will be asked to develop a program using a robot made at IIT-B. “The aim of the competition is to attract young talent to create utility based robotic applications for usage across a variety of fields right from agriculture, defence, home to city maintenance and service industries,” said professor Kavi Arya from the computer science and engineering (CSE) department, who conceptualised the project along with professor Krithi Ramamritham. The MHRD sponsors E-Yantra under the National Mission for ICT in Education (NMEICT) program. The initiative will provide hands-on learning and infrastructure to engineering students who have limited access to labs and mentors. The students will identify problems and solve them using a robot developed by the IIT-B team over the last five years. All the participants will have to appear for a written test to check their basic knowledge on robotics. After short-listing the candidates, the institute plans to have around 120 teams across the country with up to four members each. Students who are selected then will undergo training and will then compete. These teams will be then given different themes, for example using a robot to fill potholes, or to pick up fruits, etc. The grand finale will be during IITB’s Techfest 2013. Interested participants can register at to participate in the challenge. “Traditionally when students were given robotics project, they had to first build a robot, and then work on the project. Now they have a commodity robot and an existing open source code base to draw upon to model a sophisticated solution to a problem,” said professor Arya. It will also bring students across disciplines like electrical engineering, CSE, IT, etc together, he added.

he big screen TVs manufacturers are shipping today have become extremely thin, with some even managing a single-digit millimeter thickness. But they all pale in comparison to a new transparent display that has been developed at the University of Tokyo. Researcher Yoichi Ochiai and his team have managed to create a working display on a special type of soap bubble that is just 700nm thick. As soap bubbles consist of a membrane, they can both let light through and display color. Ochiai managed to control the output of the membrane by hitting it with ultrasonic sound waves from a speaker. The end result is a display that can output 2D and 3D images, but can also change the texture of the image due to the varying vibrations of the sound hitting the surface. And when several are used together, they can even output holographic images.
July 2012 Edition
The soap bubbles used are still mostly made of soap, but are much stronger than your typical bath time bubbles due to the chemical mixture used to form the liquid. In fact, they are so strong you can break the surface with an object and the bubble won’t burst. these tiny displays won’t challenge the giant LCD TVs for space on your wall any time soon. However, they do offer something new, notably a transparent display that makes objects looks as though they are floating in mid air. They also aren’t limited to being circular. You can form one of these bubble screens within any shape. Scientists have managed to create a working display of a special type of soap bubble that is just 700nm thick. It is able to both let light through and display colour. The end result is a display that can output 2D, 3D, textured and even holograhic images.

FROM SYDNEY WITH LOVE
rom Sydney With Love is the Golden Jubilee revival project for Pramod Films – the production house known for films such as Ziddi, Love In Tokyo, Nastik, Deedar and Barood. The film marks the film debut of production house head Pramod Chakravorty’s grandson Prateek, who also wrote and directed the film. From Sydney With Love also stars newcomers Bidita Bag, Sharad Malhotra, Evelyn Sharma, and Karan Sagoo. The soundtrack has been handed to up and coming It Kid, Sohail Sen, to oversee, fresh off his successful foray into mainstream Bollywood with the hit soundtrack for Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Sohail Sen is seemingly going from strength to strength – and it makes me super excited for the Ek Tha Tiger soundtrack! His work on the FSWL album errs on the the side of just edgy enough to keep it interesting, but not so experiemental to alienate a mainstream audience. In short: dude knows what he’s doing. Feeling Love In Sydney opens with the uniquely Aussie sound of didgeridoos, soon overlaid with futuristic electronic bleeping, before guitars kick in, strumming in a distinctively r’n’b rhythm. It sounds like a mixture of elements that probably shouldn’t work together – but they gel all too easily into a hypnotically mellow desi r’n’b / hip hop track, with a repetitive, smooth chorus, none other than the man behind the album, Sohail Sen,Sonu crooning Nighm “come feel

the love in Sydney, come fall in love in Sydney!” Roshni Baptist’s backing vocals deserve acknowledgement too. The Remix by DJ Rayaan avoids the all-too-common trap of just adding a few more beats to make it danceable and is an ACTUAL remix, mixing in samples of dialogue and transforming the hip-hop/r’n’b original into a pumping trance-dance track. Mohit Chauhan’s reliably gorgeous voice anchors the soaring ballad Ho Jaayegaa. There’s nothing overly flashy or in your face about this pretty track – but there’s a bit of texture and depth to the layers of rhythm and instrumentation – from the soft strumming guitar, to the barely perceptible handclaps in the percussion, the twining vocals in duet with Monali Thakur’s lovely contrasting voice, that combine into a sweet, breezy melody. There’s a Remix on the album, which actually in this case seems a bit superfluous. It just feels a bit weird to hear such an initially pretty song turned into a thumping dancefloor anthem with all the electronic bells and whistles. It’s not terrible, just a weird juxtaposition with the original (which I obviously prefer). Khatkaa Khatkaa brings some bhangra into the proceedings, with Mika on the mic, plenty of dhol and those familiar shoulder shaking beats! We’re not going fully old school though – the arrangement makes room for a low key thread of electronica to run through the song – it starts
off with techno sirens, and every now and then you can pick up the synths that run very subtly underneath the bhangra beats. Upbeat, but if you’ve heard a bhangra song, you know what to expect. The steady, thumping backbeat that forms the backbone of the incredibly gorgeous Naino Ne is a wonderful contrast to the fragile beauty of the rest of the song. Ethereal vocals from Palak are contrasted with verses from Mohammed Salamat, as an absolutely beautiful melody builds and shimmers around them. This
song comes as close to recreating what its like to fall in love as I’ve ever felt. Absolutely stunning. A dance track with a definite kind of retro rock vibe, Item Ye Hi Fi has a kinda sexy, grungy beat that straddles pop and rock and a definitely catchy chorus. Neeraj Shridhar is at the mic for this one: and it’s a quick, grungy dancefloor trip! The final track, Pyaari Pyaari, is the result of teamwork – written and composed by Sohail Sen, Thor Patridge and Nabin Laskar. It has a refreshing reggae feel to
it, and I have to tell you – it’s genius. Kicking off in Bengali, courtesy of vocalist Brooklyn Shanti and with added vocals from Sohail Sen, this track is the epitome of mellow and summery, and totally addictive – the rhythms and harmonies just sound amazing, and the sum of the parts is: you don’t want it to end. Ever. All in all, the From Sydney With Love soundtrack album is a sweet and solid listen, with at least two standout tracks: the warm, sunshiney Pyaari Pyaari and the gorgeous Naino Ne. Definitely worth a spin.

Apple plans smaller, cheaper iPad to take on Google’s Nexus 7
A
pple plans to debut a smaller, cheaper iPad by year-end to help maintain its dominance of the tablet market, two persons with knowledge of the plans said. The new model will have a screen that is seven to eight inches diagonally, less than the current 9.7-inch version, said the sources who asked not to be identified. The product, which Apple may announce by October, will not have the high-definition (HD) screen featured on the iPad that was released in March, said one of the sources. A smaller, less expensive iPad could undercut the ambitions of Google, Microsoft and Amazon. com to gain traction in the advancing tablet market, said Shaw Wu, an analyst at Sterne Agee & Leach. The new device will probably have a price closer to Google’s Nexus 7 tablet and Amazon’s Kindle Fire, both of which have 7-inch screens and cost $199. “It would be the competitors’ worst nightmare,” Wu said in an interview. “The ball is in Apple’s court.” Since the iPad went on sale in April 2010, Apple has dominated the tablet market, which is predicted by Display-Search to reach $66.4 billion this year. Apple has 61% of the market, according to research firm Gartner. Apple’s rivals are eager to gain a toehold. Google said on June 27
that it will sell a tablet-style device called the Nexus 7. Earlier in the month, Microsoft announced a tablet called Surface that will have a similar screen size as the current iPad. Amazon’s Kindle Fire was released last year. The entrants’ best chance of success has been to focus on markets where Apple had
no toehold, said Jan Dawson, an analyst at Ovum. The Surface comes in two models that are most likely to appeal to buyers who want to continue using Microsoft’s Windows software, Dawson said. While Microsoft has not disclosed pricing or timing for either, the higher-end version will probably

he number of mobile phone subscribers in India rose to 929.37 million in May with Bharti Airtel alone signing two million new subscribers, says official data. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) data released Wednesday evening, with an addition of 8.35 million subscribers, the wireless user base grew 0.91 percent in May from 921.02 million in April. With this, the total number of telephone subscribers, including land line holders, touched 960.90 million, registering a growth of 0.84 per cent. Overall teledensity in India reached 79.28 per cent. However, of the total 929.37 million wireless subscribers, only 689.33 million subscribers were active on the date of peak visitor location register (VLR). The total active VLR number excludes the CDMA VLR figure of BSNL, as the service provider has not provided the VLR figures of their total CDMA subscriber base of 3.59 million, Trai said.

be pricier than the iPad and targeted more at an emerging class of laptop PCs called Ultrabooks, he said. The latest iPad ranges in price from $499 to $829. Google’s Nexus 7 could stack up well against Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which went on sale in November. The Nexus 7, manufactured by
Asustek Computer, has a faster processor and better battery life than the Kindle Fire, as well as a frontfacing camera. Still, competing with a lower-priced iPad will be more challenging, Wu said. Apple benefits from having more than 225,000 apps that have been tailored specifically for the current iPad. VLR is a temporary database of the subscribers who have roamed into the particular area, which it serves. Each base station in the network is served by exactly one VLR, hence a subscriber cannot be present in more than one VLR at a time. The total number of subscribers of Bharti Airtel stood at 185.3 million. Idea Cellular added 1.76 million subscribers to take its subscribers count to 115.97 million. Uninor added 1.5 customers taking its subscribers base to 45 million while Vodafone added 1.2 million users increasing its subscribers count to 152.5 million. Aircel added 8,06,149 subscribers to have total number of 64.4 million users. Reliance Communications added 5,07,597 subscribers to take its user base to 154 million. State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd ( MTNL) on the other hand lost 81,809 and 1,71,951 users respectively to have 97.7 million and 5.6 million users. According to the data, the broadband subscriber base reached 14.31 million in May from 13.95 in April. However, the wireline segment declined marginally from 31.89 million in April to 31.53 million in May.

Bollywood PR guru and Bigg Boss specialist Dale Bhagwagar, who has handled the media affairs for all of the above controversial names from time to time feels Bigg Boss 6 won’t lose its sheen. “The show already has its best entertainment quotient in the form of voyeurism. Moreover, the fun tasks given to participants create more enthusiasm throughout,” comments the Bollywood publicist who has also represented Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty through the thick and thin of controversies. “If the entertainment quotient is increased without compromising on the spirit of conflict, Bigg Boss would catch even more eyeballs and TRPs this year,” he adds. Latest buzz also has it that the reality show will shift from Karjat, back to its original location, Lonavala. The lush green hill-station of Lonavala, falls near the more-famed Khandala (thanks to Aamir Khan’s anthem ‘Aati Kya Khandala’), between Mumbai and Pune.

white wines, which were priced less than 5 pounds while vintages were priced between 10 and 30 pounds. They were told to say which were cheap and which expensive. The media report said that according to the laws of chance, 50 per cent of their
guess should have been correct and this was exactly their level of accuracy. This showed that the volunteers could not distinguish between wines just by tasting it. These are remarkable results. “People were unable to tell expensive from inexpensive
wines, and so in these times of financial hardship the message is clear - the inexpensive wines we tested tasted the same as their expensive counterparts,” said Richard Wiseman, a professor from the University of Hertfordshire, who led the research. www.indian-times.com.au

BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL
KERALA
K
erala is a state in Southern India is known as a tropical paradise of waving palms and wide sandy beaches. It is a narrow strip of coastal territory that slopes down the Western Ghats in a cascade of lush green vegetation, and reaches to the Arabian sea. Kerala borders the states of Tamil Nadu to the east and Karnataka to the north. It is also known for its backwaters, mountains, coconuts, spices and art forms like Kathakali and Mohini Attam. It is the most literate state in India, and a land of diverse religions, where you can find Hindu temples, mosques, churches, and even synagogues. With world class tourist sporting options, ayurvedic spas and treatments, eco-tourism initiatives, a large number of visit options ranging from beautiful high altitude blue mountains to pristine rain forests to golden sun-sand beaches and an enormous range of accommodation, Kerala has much to offer the visitor. History Large parts of Kerala were not subject to direct British rule. Malabar was a district of Madras Presidency under direct British rule, but Tiruvithamkoor (Travancore) and Kochi (Cochin) regions were autonomous kingdoms ruled by Maharajas during the period of the British rule in India, and were known for their progressive attitude which resulted in various welfare reforms, particularly in the areas of education and health care. Kerala was the place in India where European colonization first started. The Portuguese were the first to discover a direct sea route between Lisbon and Kozhikode in Kerala, and this marked the beginning of European colonisation in the country. Soon the Dutch, French, Italians and British were all lured by the wealth of spices and silk, and came with the intention of forming colonies. The defeat of the Dutch by the Travancore Army at the Battle of Colachel, and the decline of Portuguese Empire and French problems in Europe, resulted in the British gaining the full influence in country, and the annexation of the Malabar region into the British Madras Presidency. However, the Kingdoms of Cochin and Travancore remained independent with little interference from the British, and they were staunch allies. After the independence of India, the Kingdoms of Travancore and Cochin choose to accede into the Indian Union, and were later merged into a single State of Travancore-Cochin. With the linguistic reorganisation of States, the Malayalamspeaking regions of Malabar and TravancoreCochin were integrated into the State of Kerala

on November 1st 1956. This realised a united Kerala, a dream held since the partition of the ancient Kerala Empire of Cheras in the eighth century. Today, people in Kerala live a largely traditional lifestyle, and much of the rich culture and heritage of the region is well-preserved. November 1st is celebrated as Keralappiravi (Birth of Kerala) Day (also observed as Malayalam Divasam or Malayalam Day). Culture Unique to Kerala, the Malayalee culture is derived from ancient Tamil-Dravidian practices combined with Arya-Indian culture, with influences from China, Japan, Arab countries, Portugal, Holland and even from the British. There are a lot of Tamil-Sanskrit elements, resulting in many unique practices and customs. Each community in Kerala has its own unique Malayalee culture which will not be found anywhere outside Kerala. The Buddhist influence brought Ayurveda into a prominent position as well as Kalaripayattu (Kerala’s traditional martial art). While religious beliefs and its associated myths & legends are well rooted in the Malayalee psyche, the influence of communism and the Kerala renaissance has resulted in separation of religion from the daily routine of life. Kerala architecture has lot of TibetanChinese influence, due to its seclusion from other parts of India when the Western Ghats prevented Tamil influences. Most of the buildings have gabled, tiled roofs and a heavy use of wood with prominent slanting windows and ornamental flora designs. The Sree Padmanabhapuram Palace near Trivandrum, is a classic example of this style. Dance, music, drama all have distinctive styles. Dances and music often attract large crowds. A good way to experience the entire arts and culture of Kerala in one place is at the Annual Kerala State School Youth Festival, normally held in December or January. The location changes between various district headquarters on a rotational basis. This was constituted by the government as a competition amongst school children to promote Kerala arts and culture. This is Asia’s largest festival according to the Guinness Book of records, with more than 82 art forms show-cased during its ten day duration. Shopping Shopping is a national hobby in Kerala, with vast options in all metros. Do shop during Onam or Christmas seasons. Its going to be amazing rock bottom discounts, that make you mad with shopping. The best shopping during Onam is white goods and electronics, whereas
its more of dress and jewelery shopping during Christmas, though you get discounts for all in these seasons. Where to stay Kerala was one of the first states in India to pioneer the concept of Homestays and make it a successful industry, providing a much needed source of extra income to the locals, while at the same time giving travelers more than a peek at the real Kerala. Under this homestay concept, you get to stay with a family who can show you around and also help you to find what makes Kerala tick. Your accommodation and food is taken care of at a nominal cost. The government has strict guidelines for Homestays and hence generally most of them are safe and well-maintained. These homestays range inbetween Rs 300 (6 US$) to Rs 3500 (70 US$) per night (depends upon the property and its profile) For a more comfortable stay, you need to shell out above Rs 700 (~US$14) for a Non AC room or More than Rs 1,200 (~US$26) for an AC Room. This category would include many 3 star hotels. You could expect to have more spacious rooms, English proficient concierges, Airport/Railway Station Pick-Up and Drop. However if you are expecting a cheap extended stay hotel, with attached kitchenette, not much options are available in Kerala much. Themed resorts also would fall in the category. Prepare to shell anywhere above Rs 3,000 and you could rent out a whole cottage in an idyllic location and they do come with kitchens. Food Kerala cuisine is distinctly different from food elsewhere in India. The major difference that one can easily notice are dominance of rice as staple food and popularity of nonvegetarian dishes including beef and pork which are normally taboo elsewhere in India. Seafood gets a lion’s share in typical Kerala’s cuisine and lavish use of coconut (in form of coconut oil, coconut milk, powder or paste) gives a distinct taste. Food in Kerala tends to include a variety of spices and most of them are extremely fiery. Kerala also has its own fair share of famous vegetarian cuisines and normally only vegetarian foods are taken during festival days, particularly Onam Kerala’s cuisine is divided into four basic regional styles, according to ingredient availability and historical influence: Malabar, Central Travancore, Southern Travancore, and Central Kerala. Although all four styles can be found throughout the state, the food will be most authentic within each given region.

[Interview]
asin thottumkal From the original ‘Golmaal’ from where the film is inspired, your character is the additional. What is the follow back of your character? I have nothing to follow. Basically it’s the script which is written I relied on that but like you said the basic idea of Golmaal is the interaction between Ajay and Abhishek and the original even the girl don’t have anything much to do. But it’s being rewritten, it’s little new. In what way the role is different from what you have done so far in Bollywood? Well.. My last film houseful 2 is more of a westernize look and the story was based out in London. It’s an Indian story based on a village in India. The character which I am playing Sania Bachchan is a very earthy character. I think out of the lots of the character in the film, she is the most down to earth and grounded. Rohit has a set working style.. how did you cope with it? Rohit likes rehearsals. he has a set of Assistant Director’s who does everything including the positioning of each and every character their timings, walking, where they stand, the focus point along with the camera person. But he actually liked it everything organized before actors walked into the sets. When we reach the set he actually shows the rehearsal what he did with the AD’s and expect us to follow. I think he has a particular idea and liked actors to follow them. What difference you found in Rohit with other comedy film directors like Sajid Khan and Aneeze Bazmee? A:Aneeze bazmee is one of the seniors of the industry. He is more into what is written and he takes little improvisation from the actors. Sajid is more spontaneous. He takes inputs from the actors. He is an encyclopedia. In houseful 2 we hardly referred what was written. Specially that ‘Aeee..”
thing. Rohit is very much sticking to the script and like to do rehearsal. He is very punctual on sets. He likes starting early. How challenging was your role? Not too much...it was not challenging. It wasn’t the character which needed lot of homework. Are you a bol bachchan in real life? I am not a bol bachchan in real life. I can be a chatter box but with very few people. What makes you to choose such movies? I guess the fun emotional universal appeal and even audience also like such movies. How is Abhishek as a co star ? Abhishek is like a kid...hahahha... he is lot of fun. He is a livewire on set. The day he was not shooting there is a drop in the energy level. He is a prankster and you don’t know whom he will catch and make bakra. He plays pranks mostly with the crew. My antenna was alert because I have being working with the great prankster from the industry like Salman, Akshay and Ajay. I have luck of working with all the prankster in the industry. We all the actors used to play a guessing game and Abhishek a sole looser. In the game he used to argue till he win so at the end we used to say “accha baba lelo points you win” Are you satisfied as an actor? Not really. I am an actor and we need character satisfaction also. But only in commercial format as at this point of time I would like to reach out to the number of audience and commercial film help me to do that. I still look for character which gives me satisfaction as an actress. Do you regret as all the character you did was not character role?
No.. w h y would I regret when I have three back to back 100cr profit films and that to in three and a half years. It’s really good luck and fortune. Would you like to do heroine oriented role like vidya is doing? I don’t mind doing such role until its well written and well packaged and its entertaining. Do you compare your graph in Hindi and south ? In Hindi its still a baby steps.. I can’t compare. Probably after few years I may do. What difference you found in south and bollywood working style ? Here its more of a westernized functioning. I think it’s the style of functioning nothing else. Bol Bachchan could be your hatrick on Bollywood’s wicket? Keeping my finger crossed. Everybody is asking and there is so much pressure so I don’t think about it.
South sensation Asin has started making her mark in Bollywood and now she is teaming with the 100cr club stalwarts Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgan in Bol Bachchan. Indiaglitz caught with the pretty talent and learnt something interesting regarding the highly awaited comedy starring ‘’Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan, Asin and Prachi Desai.

he Southern Sirens are taking over Bollywood once again. Barely had we digested the fact that the 22-year old Tamannah Bhatia would be making her Bollywood debut opposite 40-plus Ajay Devgn. They will star in the Vashu Bhagnaniproduced Himmatwala when now news comes that another Tamil-Telugu actress Priya Anand has been cast opposite Vashu’s son Jackky in the Hindi remake of the 2009 Tamil hit Naadodigal. A prominent Tamil -Telugu actress, Priya was Rana Daggubati’s co-star in his debut film Leader. Since then she has been labeled lucky for her leading men. Apparently, Priya has been signed by Bhagnani for an exclusive 3-film deal on Rana Daggubati’s recommendation. Says a source, “Immediately after she finishes shooting Priyadarshan’s film for Bhagnani titled Rang Rez, she goes into F.A.L.T.U 2 with Jackky which Sanjay Gadhvi will direct. We are all Speaking Trees W
e are all speaking trees. We have extensive root systems extending through time and across the boundaries imposed by political systems. We have branches that reach out and yearn up. We bend and break. And, we are fuel, food and shelter for those who enter the forests of our lives. Improving self requires strengthening our root systems so that we draw deeply from the wisdom of the world and the ages. Improving anything requires an out-reaching and an up -reaching. And, a willingness to both bend and possibly break. All athletes know this. All artists and all true learners. When we are able to offer to the other something of ourselves that can engage, nourish or sustain spirit then we most fully speak. And the forest is a bit more beautiful. The light finds its way in. The Canadian poet Leonard Cohen sings, “Forget your perfect offerings. There is a crack in everything. That is where the light comes in” The quest for perfection isolates us. Our vulnerabilities are what make us accessible and human. As we lead our lives and our enterprises, we have many opportunities to speak from the root of what nourishes us. Reflection: What nourishes your roots? What holds and sustains you? How might you speak to and with the root in others and help sustain their striving?

ya Super Kool Hain Hum seems to have everything that could offend family audience. In fact, the makers are already prepared for bad reviews of the film. Don’t believe us? Producer Ekta Kapoor tells us that she’s planning to flaunt all the bad reviews in a big way. Sounds believable, as Ekta is clear about her strategy for the film from day one - take a dig at yourself before people do, expect protests before they actually begin. The second trailer of the film takes off with people protesting about the content of the film and burning movie posters. After Censors chopped three scenes from the theatrical trailer of Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum, Ekta Kapoor went ahead with the online launch of the second A-rated trailer of the film. think censors have a lot of pressure. Audience is not homogeneous and we have to cater to various thought processses. I don’t blame censors as they have a lot of pressure. But at the same time, we cannot be pushed back in our expression of thought and we hope censors understand that.” Ekta in fact thinks that online is the best medium to promote a movie as it targets younger generation. “Online is the big-
gest medium. We all know how big it can get for promotion. It caters to a young audience. Online is the best medium to check out every piece of information on the net. And I think this A-promo is fun, naughty and the fact that I went ahead with the online launch of the promo shows how much I believe in the medium.” Ekta Kapoor is kicked about the film’s dialogues that have become a rage. “They have even made fun of me.” She adds, “In one of the scenes, a character says, ‘Main Tiger’, another says ‘Main Ekta’ and the character goes on to add, ‘Together, we are Ek Tha Tiger’.” But the lady was not at all amused by a dialogue that takes a dig at actors Nargis Fakhri and Diana Penty. In a scene, actor Tusshar Kapoor tells Riteish Deshmukh that “Pehle ki heroines ke naam hote the Madhubala, Waheeda Rahman, aur ab dekho Penty, Fakhri” (Earlier heroines had names like Madhubala and Waheeda Rehman, but now see names are Penty, Fakhri). “I’m trying to get the dialogue out of the film,” says Ekta. Asin and Prachi are spoiling my name - Ajay Devgn Will the movie attract legs to theaters?
Bol Bachchan is a complete entertainer. It shaped up nicely. What audience want is all their in this film. There are people in industry and media which blame that “bad movies” are making money.Your comment? Well.. people who can’t make a blockbuster masala entertainer they only say that it’s not good cinema. if your movies does 100cr business means lakhs of people have gone and watched your movie. At the end of the day audience wants to get entertain. They don’t want to get educated on class cinema. Entertainment can be anything emotional, comedy, action, drama whichever way. The bottom line is you cannot discard the audience. You where associated with realistic cinema like Apaharan and Gangajal? Gangajal is very entertaining. Prakash Jha pick up a real theme based idea and make it very entertaining. The other makers pick up realistic cinema but they make it very boring. They make it like documentary. Such subjective movies should be entertaining not documentary types. Coming to Bol Bachchan..tell us about your character in the film? He is a wrestler from a very small town. He is practically what you call zameedar. He loves talking English and he thinks that he knows very good English but he always speaks wrong English. People are scared of him so nobody corrects him. Half of the villagers don’t know English so they think he speaks very good English and he believes in honesty and how everybody cons him. When there is so much change in the script then why there is a need of buying the rights? Eventually lot of people said that there is no need to buy the rights but I really believed that if you are inspired by a film it’s only ethical to buy rights. We had many great film makers and if one of their films inspired us to make a film then buying a right is like giving a tribute. It’s just ethical. Don’t you think it will carry an undue baggage It’s not about baggage? It’s about ethical. If we people don’t follow then we can expect other to follow. So you have to set up an example somewhere and we are in the industry past 20 years and we are responsible and if we don’t do it then who will do. Whose idea it was to rope up Big B in the song with you two guys? It was Rohit’s idea. The title is Bol Bachchan so he wanted to do some song on this. How Big B song is incorporated in the film It’s in the begin of the film? He practically introduces the characters. Working with both the Bachchans together as you have worked with both of them separately? Ya...I shared a great rapport with both of them so it was very comfortable. When we asked Big B to dub he did that alone as we were busy. And we sung a bit in the song too... Do you have any kind of pressure about the box office? We don’t think about it. Pressure is their weather the film will work or not. While doing the film you come to know that the film will work or not at the box office. Abhishek type of comedy is different from yours. So how you made him to get into your type? We have to really push Abhishek into our type of comedy. The timing and script demand and all that. He took one or two day to settle with it.
“Mera naam kharab kar rhai hai aur kuch nahi” July 2012 Edition
As per the actresses of the film they said you were the livewires on the set? Krishna and other comedy circus boys used to do mimicry so it was lots of fun. Prachi and Asin said you are a prangster? Mera naam kharab kar rhai hai aur kuch nahi... (They are
spoiling my name) But you are one of the industries well known pranksters? Well since two years I have not played any pranks. Did anyone else played pranks with you? No... nobody have guts. Prachi was complaining that she did 2 films with you but she didn’t get the chance to pair up with you? She is in fact my sister in the film. That’s director decision not mine. You are done with 20years in the film industry tell us the biggest positive and negative change you come across? Positive is that we are going global which is helping us and the market is increasing. The negative is even though film does so much business but the producer doesn’t get good profit out of it. Your take on corporate in films? I don’t know my experience with corporate is that they are very good at marketing and buying the films but they don’t have knowledge of making the movie. Your upcoming films? Himmatwala, Son of Sardar, Satyagrah. What about direction? I am too occupied for next two year so may be later.

IS VIDYA BALAN’S RED BLOUSE LUCKY? Ekta Kapoor can be safely called the most superstitious producer After the news that there are one spoof too many in her upcoming film starring brother Tusshar and Riteish Deshmukh, we hear that Vidya Balan’s now famous red blouse has managed to make its way into the film too. Ekta feels that she should incorporate a part of The Dirty Picture and that’s what she has done in the form of the actress’ blouse. Lucky charm, no?
Sukhwinder Singh Profile
S
ukhwinder Singh is one of the most in-demand singers in Bollywood. The Chaiyya Chaiyya man arrived in style. Chaiyya Chaiyya needs no introduction, nor does the Mirchi number from Biwi No. 1 needs a memory test. At a time when all the singers were sounding like twins, with no vigorousness in the voice or intensity in emotion, there came a voice atop a train, which changed many positions in the singing fraternity. Sukhwinder Singh had arrived. The first stage performance was at the age of 7 – 8 when he sang the Lata number ‘Sa re ga ma pa, pa, pa, ga ma re, ga re mere sang mere saajna’. He also released a Punjabi album called Munda Southhall Da with T – Series and came to collect an award and decided to stay back. He joined Laxmikant Pyarelal’s troupe and quickly became a music arranger. Then as with Hindi film actors, he went looking for work to the south of India and did a film called Rakshagan. His first effort in Hindi films, Aaja Sanam, went largely unremarked, even though the music carried the names of Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Then, along came Dil Se. A R Rahman, always interested in something new, used Sukhwinder for the unforgettable Chaiyya Chaiyya. It was no flash in the pan, and Sukhwinder is now highly regarded as a sensitive and eloquent singer. Other films followed, including Taal, Biwi No 1, 1947 Earth, Daag,

Dillagi and Thakshak have now made him a household word. Sukhwinder owes a large part of his success to Rahman’s encouragement, and makes no effort to gloss over that fact. Sukhwinder has some pretty strong opinions about writing music - he has once stated that if he was ever involved in writing music for film, he would delve deep into the Indian musical landscape and not simply conjure up some digital tricks with pop and fusion.Rahman and Sukhwinder are presently working very closely together, and the duo have decided to make music that is not tailor-made to fit in with films, but to venture into realms where they can truly express themselves.

Did Kareena and Ekta have a fall-out over Emraan Haashmi? After Bebo’s recent dismissal of her Emraan Hashmi production, sources indicate that close buddies Ekta Kapoor may not be feeling too kindly about Kareena anymore Close pals Ekta Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor may not on the best of terms these days. It all started when Bebo was supposed to do the sequel of Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai that Ekta is producing. But the actress reportedly walked out at the last moment and had to be replaced by Sonakshi Sinha. Now, apparently Ekta is not happy with Bebo’s antics. A source informs, “Ekta was not happy with the fact that Kareena opted out at the last minute. However, Ekta who is also doing a co-production with Karan Johar, to be directed by Akshay Roy and stars Emraan Hashmi
really wanted Bebo to sign this film. Apparently, Kareena did not even hear the script. Ekta was very unhappy about it and has been telling people that she will never work with her in the future.” The source adds, “A couple of days back, Ekta also had a funny status message on her phone, which could indicate: D a m a g e d Psycho + Dumb Bimbo = Heroine (we wonder if she was referring to Bebo’s next release). This clearly shows that she is not very happy with Bebo.”

Prime Minister visits Featherbrook media release A thriving Point Cook neighbourhood
P
rime Minister, Julia Gillard, has officially opened the Featherbrook Community Centre and Sports Pavilion at Featherbrook Point Cook, giving an extra boost to the neighbourhood. Featherbrook is a new community by award winning Melbourne developer Central Equity Land and is home to the brand new Parkbrook Precinct, currently being marketed by the prestigious company. substantial community facilities. The centre was developed by the Wyndham City Council in partnership with the State and Federal government. Featherbrook’s developer, Central Equity, was a keen supporter of the initiative as part of its commitment to developing communities that enrich residents’ lifestyles. “Featherbrook is a fantastic example of a development that has been designed with residents’ quality of life at heart.” said Central Equity Chairman, Eddie Kutner. The centre includes child and
maternal health care facilities, kindergarten rooms, play area with equipment and sandpit, IT training facilities, purpose-built kitchen for hospitality training and a sprung dance floor for exercise classes. “The new centre will contribute significantly to this community, particularly given the number of young families in the area, and the expected population growth in years to come,” Mr Kutner said. The community centre is located in the well-established Village Precinct of Featherbrook where residents also have access to the Pinnacle Medical Centre, Brook Bistro and entertainment venue and proposed retail shops and services. A wonderful network of parks, wetlands, walking/ cycling paths and open spaces provide further enjoyment for new Featherbrook residents. Central Equity is a renowned developer of quality communities and recently received two excellence awards from UDIA Victoria (Urban Development Institute of Australia, Victoria) and the 2011Victorian Apartment Project of the Year Award from the HIA (Housing Industry Association). A range of excellent land lots are now available in the Parkbrook Precinct from $179,000. The estate features flexible design guidelines, and no on-going
body corporate fees and a limited selection of lots are already titled and ready to build on.

t seems that one of Katie Holmes’ big problems in her marriage with Tom Cruise was the fear that Scientology would get a hold of their daughter, Suri Cruise. It is rumored that her biggest concern was in regard to Suri being interrogated by the organization just as his other children had been, states TMZ. She was allegedly worried about Suri possibly going through “sec checking” which involves being asked a series of personal questions. n the end the strokes of an artist silenced the will of a nation that was urging, pleading, begging its hero, 25-year-old Andy Murray, to bring home the title. Roger Federer, unmoved by the tide of hysteria that was closing in around him, sang his song like only he can on a bitter-cold London evening to claim his 17th Grand Slam title with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 win. The win gave Federer his seventh Wimbledon crown and the world No. 1 ranking, which will take him past Pete Sampras’ record of 286 weeks at the game’s top. Federer then told the crowd, “I played my best tennis in the last two matches... I’ve missed playing the final. Feels good to have this trophy in my hands after three years, it feels like it never left my hands.” A weeping Murray, who took the runner-up plate, said: “I am getting closer. I want to thank all the people in my team. We did great. And the crowd, you make it easy here. After my semifinal I heard people say, this is your best chance, Federer is 30, he’s old. He’s not bad for a 30-year-old!” A day that began in a deluge of rain saw the skies clear miraculously a little before 2 pm, allowing the finalists to walk out on court in bright, sunny conditions. The host nation was looking for its first champion since Fred Perry in 1936, and Federer was aiming for a slice of history.
The tension was thick in the air. In the Royal Box, Kate Middleton, wearing a Joseph Vanessa dress and jacket, and sister Pippa, cheered wildly, reflecting the emotions across Britain, where crowds braved wet, windy conditions from Murray Mound at SW19 to Festival Square in Edinburgh, to egg their hero on. Federer started nervously after electing to serve. An overhit drive volley rewarding the world No. 4, playing his fourth Grand Slam final, with a break. With the 15,000 strong crowd on its feet, save for the Scot’s coach Ivan Lendl, Murray did well to hold serve. With every passing point, it looked like the six-time champion, in his eighth Wimbledon final, was hitting his stride. The Swiss wrung the break back in the fourth game on the back of a single-fisted backhand down-theline, the Swiss’ lazy elegance plastered all over it. Then, in the 12-minute eighth game, Federer had a chance to tip the balance. Three opportunities, but each time the Swiss came up short. Murray charged the baseline, scrambling back and forth to hold his own in the face of a stirring onslaught by his opponent. Interestingly, as the clouds gathered over centre court, a sunny cheer spread in the crowd. Murray responded by breaking Federer’s

serve in the ninth game before serving out the set to log his first set in a Grand Slam final. If Murray felt any nerves at all at the start of the match, they had more than steadied as he forced his opponent to play every ball. Federer, on the other hand, was beginning to look edgy. The Swiss superstar, the first 30-something Wimbledon finalist since Jimmy Connors at the age of 31 in 1984, appeared a step off the pace, especially in the long rallies. Games then went with serves and just as the set seemed to be heading into tie-break, Federer tightened the reins in the 12th game.
A daring drop shot giving the Swiss break-point, Federer made no mistake on the next point, powering through on a flood of groundstrokes to lock the set. After splitting the first two games of the third set, Federer was up 40-0 in the third game when the skies opened up. The players returned on court 35 minutes later with the roof firmly drawn over centre court. In what was a virtual second part of the match, played in near-perfect conditions, the Swiss master held serve at love. It’s hard to say what Lendl, Murray’s coach who lost his first four Grand Slam finals, told his ward

at the rain break, but it didn’t seem to make a dent on the genius of Federer. The 30-year-old artist, who broke in the sixth game after setting up nearly half-dozen breakpoint opportunities, sealed the effort with a screaming backhand. Federer then served out the set in the ninth game. The Swiss master, who by now was swinging freely, got ahead in the fifth game of the fourth set, breaking Murray with a single-fisted backhand crosscourt that could’ve threaded a needle. Federer then didn’t put a foot wrong as he served out the match on his second championship point.

irender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan made a comeback to the Indian team heading to Sri Lanka later this month for a fivematch one-day series and a Twenty20 international. The national selection committee met on Wednesday afternoon to pick a 15-member squad for the tour which has Sachin Tendulkar, holidaying this month, missing from the squad. Allrounders Ravindra Jadeja, Yusuf and Irfan Pathan and Praveen Kumar have been dropped while top-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane, who was unfortunate to miss out on the Asia Cup in March this year, is back in the team. TOI had reported a week back that Jadeja was set to lose his place in the team. Middle-order batsmen Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma,
Suresh Raina and Manoj Tiwary retain themselves with Mahendra Singh Dhoni at the helm. Sehwag and Gambhir, as regular openers, have once again been paired together. “We have the best available team. Sachin is not available. I think it is a very good side which has very strong batting line-up and good bowlers and we are confident that it will do well in Sri Lanka,” chairman of selectors K Srikkanth said after announcing the squad. The team includes three spinners for the slow Sri Lankan tracks, seven specialist batsmen, four seamers and a wicketkeeper. “It is a long season ahead. Sachin wants to extend his career. He must be aiming at England and Australia (series later this year). He is spacing it out very well,” Srikkanth told the reporters.
A notable inclusion is left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, back in the team at the cost of Jadeja who had a terrible Asia Cup outing. Partnering him in the spin department are R Ashwin and Rahul Sharma who have been retained. Harbhajan Singh, who is currently going through a lean patch, has been ignored yet again. Virat Kohli has been appointed the team’s vice-captain. “The idea is continuity. Virat got brilliant hundreds after becoming vice-captain which shows that he likes responsibility,” Srikkanth said. Team: MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Ashok Dinda, Vinay Kumar, Ajinkya Rahane, Manoj Tiwari, Rahul Sharma.

Shuttler Kashyap eyeing Olympic glory after recent good showings

laced 22nd in the world rankings P Kashyap is aware of the tough challenge that awaits him in the upcoming Olympics, but the ace Indian shuttler still feels he has a good chance of finishing on the podium in London, courtesy his recent good showings on international stage. Kashyap made it to men’s singles semifinals of this year’s Indonesia Open in Jakarta after upsetting world number three Chen Long of China and world number 16 Hans-Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark, and riding on this performances he is hoping to to create history in London. “I have been doing well this year. I have been improving in every tournament. I beat a couple of world top 10 players (this year). My ranking is also improving steadily. I am hopeful that I will do well in
Olympics,” Kashyap told PTI. “My expectation is to win a medal for my country (in the Olympics), and I think I have a chance. After my recent performances, I think I stand a good chance,” he added. With a good outing in the Olympics, Kashyap is also hoping to break into the top 10 rankings this year. “I want to reach the top 10 rankings. That is my aim,” said Kashyap, who edged past compatriot Ajay Jayaram to qualify for the London Olympics after Chen Jin of China gave him a walk over in the quarterfinals of the India Open Super Series. “But I have not set any timeframe. I would like to achieve the feat this year. I have played in two semi-finals in the Super Series events and if I continue to play like this my rankings will also improve,” Kashyap said.
Chhetri signs with Ronaldo’s former club, Sporting Lisbon
Indian national team captain Sunil Chhetri is now going to don the famous Green and White colours of SportingLisbon’s B team, the club that has given the world the likes of Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani. n an inspirational move for Indian football, which has long struggled to make its presence felt on the world stage, Indian captain Sunil Chhetri on Thursday signed up with Sporting Lisbon, the legendary Portuguese club that has given the world the likes of Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani. Players from the club’s ‘B’ team, of which Chhetri will be a part, play in the second division of the league. The stint will offer Chhetri a chance

to imbibe enhanced training techniques besides rubbing shoulders with superior-quality coaches and players. Chhetri, who has a oneyear contract, is expected to fly out to Portugal in another two weeks. “I feel like a 14-year-old,” a beaming Chhetri, who turns 28 in August, said, “I’m really looking forward to it.” His agent divulged that the main aim was to make sure the player got “regular football”. Chhetri has had foreign experi-
ence before, having previously undergone trials for Queens Park Rangers and Coventry and played for Kansas City Sporting. Chhetri had trained at the Sporting Lisbon ground with the national team before the start of the Asia Cup and said that he needed to prove himself and see what he could achieve. “I just want to see how much I can achieve there. I want to take each day as it comes. There’s only one thing on my mind that I have to
go and train there. We trained there for one-and-a-half months with the national side,” Chhetri said. Though the financial details of the deal are yet to be divulged, the club’s vice president Aureliano Oliveira Neves, while presenting the jersey to Chhetri, said, “Our purpose together with the Indian football federation is to help design the right path for increasing football in India. Signing Chhetri is our first sign of commitment to Indian
The 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist shuttler credited his mentor and national coach Pullela Gopichand for his rise on the world stage. “We are lucky to have Gopi sir as our coach. He is very hard working and passionate. The credit goes to him for all my good results,” Kashyap insisted. “I am trying to improve in all areas. My game is basically attacking, so errors happen in such situations. But my effort now is to cut down on errors and try to play long rallies,” he said. He said he is working hard on his fitness during the three weeks in the run-up to the Olympics. Asked about the prospects of other Indian shuttlers in the London Olympics, Kashyap said: “I think Saina (Nehwal) obviously stands a good chance. She is in very good form.”
football.” According to an official involved with the deal, Chhetri had offers from some other European clubs too but eventually chose the Portuguese club. “Coming from a country that is ranked No. 163 in the world and going to the No. 5 nation, it’s a huge opportunity for me,” said an emotional Chhetri. “My priority is to train hard and learn. It is up to the coach and the management to decide where I could fit in. I assure I won’t leave any stone unturned. I want to make sure that when I turn 40, I don’t have to say that I could have done better. I’ll do everything that is humanly possible.” All India Football Federation president Praful Patel said it was a great start for Indian football’s ambitions to have an European presence. “It’s a milestone for Indian football. When Sunil goes to Portugal, he will not only be an ambassador but he will also bring the focus of the international footballing committee to India.” Sporting Lisbon is one of three big clubs in Portugal, with Benfica and FC Porto being the other two. The club has won 18 Primera Liga titles and 19 Portuguese Cup trophies. Sporting, though, have won one European trophy (the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup 1963-1964). They came closest to lifting one of the most coveted trophies in Europe when they finished runnersup in UEFA Cup (2004-2005). Chhetri will thus become only the third Indian footballer to play in Europe following in the footsteps of bare-footed Mohammed Abdul Salim, who won plenty of hearts doing duty for Celtic FC in 1937 and Baichung Bhutia who had a threeyear stint at Bury Football Club in England’s first division.

RHEUMATOID ARTHIRITS (RA): AYURVEDA Dr. C.R.S. Kumar Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a form of arthritis that causes pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of function in the joints (Deformity). It can affect any joint, but specifically common in smaller joints and the lining of joints or lining of internal organs will get inflamed. Women are more susceptible than men, often starts between ages 25 and 55. Rheumatoid arthritis in Ayurveda is called as “Ama vata”. In Ayurvedic Medicine there is very detailed description about the disease process (etio-pathology) and its treatment methods. The treatment methods include internal medication such as herbal preparations as well as external treatments such as abhyanga (Ayurvedic rejuvenation treatment), swedam (fomentation) etc. In Ayurveda it is mentioned as, “Sa Kashtaha Sarvarogaanaam yadaa prakupito Bhavet | Hastha paada shiro gulpha trika jaanu uru sandhishu || Karoti sarujam shopham yatra doshaha prapadyate | Sa desho rujate atyatham vyaviddha iva vrishchkaihi ||“ This means “the disease Amavata (Rheumatoid arthritis) is a chronic disease, if it becomes chronic the joints (Snadhi) of hands (Hastha), legs (Paada), ankle and elbow joint (Gulpha), Low back (Trika), Knee joint (Jaanu) and Hip joint (Uru) will get inflamed and painful. Moreover, the pain resembles the pain of “scorpion sting”. According to Modern medicine the
exact cause is not yet known, whereas, according to Ayurveda the cause is well explained. The disease is mainly due to the formation of “AMA”. It will not only affect the joints but also spreads all over the body through srotas (Channels) and obstructs the channels which in turn reduce the flow of nourishment to the body tissues. Due to which the immune levels and appetite reduce in the body. The main reasons for the formation of AMA in the body are, consumption of opposite foods, persevered foods, food items cooked one day before, poor digestive fire, sedentary life styles and imbalance in the DOSHAS (Humors). According to Modern Medicine, in rheumatoid arthritis, multiple joints are usually inflamed in a symmetrical pattern (both sides of the body affected). The small joints of both the hands and wrists are often involved. Simple tasks of daily living, such as turning door knobs and opening jars, can become
difficult during flares. Also during flares, joints frequently become red, swollen, painful, and tender. This occurs because the lining tissue of the joint (synovium) becomes inflamed, resulting in the production of excessive joint fluid (synovial fluid). The synovium also thickens with inflammation (synovitis). The small joints of the feet are the commonly involved parts in the body; especially the muscle and joint stiffness are usually most notable in the morning and after periods of inactivity. Chronic inflammation can cause damage to body tissues, including cartilage and bone. This leads to a loss of cartilage and erosion and weakness of the bones as well as the muscles, resulting in joint deformity, destruction, and loss of function. According to Ayurveda the signs and symptoms include such as, Manya prishta kati jaanu trika sandheenvikunchayan |
Sashabdaha srastagaatrashcha aamavaataha sauchyate || “ This means the joints of neck (manya) , back (prishta) , hip (kati) , knee (jaanu), sacral region (trika) and other joints get inflamed. The joint movements are often accompanied with sounds. This disease which also makes body weak is known as amavata . Systemic symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis Include, Angamarda aruchi trishna aalasyam gouravam jwaraha | Apaakaha shoonataangaanam amavatasya laxanam || This means “the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are 1. Arthritis involves both external and internal medicines. The main treatment is done to reduce the AMA by stimulating the digestive fire. Appetizers and carminatives mentioned in Ayurveda as well as Vata pacifying drugs are highly essential in reducing the pain and intensity of Rheumatoid Arthritis. The external treatments such as abhyanga with rooksha swedam are highly beneficial. ere’s an invention couch potatoes would have longed for years: a new shower gel that does not require one to take a bath. Experts say it could prove to be a boon for people who don’t have much access to clean water. Developed by Ludwick Marishane, a South African graduate student, the ‘Drybath’ gel kills germs, moisturises the skin and exudes a pleasant, light smell, unlike hand sanitisers. Marishane drew inspiration for developing the gel from one of his friends, but his invention, experts said, could be of greater use for those who live in areas where clean water is in short supply. Marishane recalled once when he nagged a friend to take a shower, his friend replied, “Why doesn’t someone invent something you can just put on your skin and avoid the need to bathe?”

Now, take a bath without water!
“A light bulb went on as I realised I would be willing to pay money out of my pocket to buy such a product,” Marishane was quoted as saying by a website. Soon after, he searched on the internet and learned that no one had invented anything similar, and that billions of people worldwide don’t have access to clean water for bathing (which can lead to many diseases). Over six months, he searched for ideas for the shower gel’s formula before developing one for his product, which is available in small, easy-to-open sachets. He got the idea of selling individual packets when he learned from mentors that the world’s poorest people buy things in very small quantities. Marishane said he wants his company, to become a ‘huge conglomerate’, while developing novel products for the world’s poorest people.

How to Lose W
e’ve all envied celebrity mommas who go back to their as-they-were figures, mere weeks after delivering a child. So have they been popping wonder pills, we all ask. Or do they starve themselves? Are they gym rats, maybe? Surely, they’ve had a little nip n’ tuck? Well, whatever their elixirs and secrets, we’re telling you, you can do it, too a la Beyonce, Posh and their ilk. How soon is it too soon? When Dr Anita Soni, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist told us that a woman can return to her normal figure within 40 days of delivery, we were gobsmacked and a further revelation (you can start exercising as you’re home from the hospital) busted another myth. She offered a tip: “The trick is to permit yourself to do what your body allows you to. It can be anything from a brisk walk or a light jog. If you have a cranky baby who keeps you up all night and leaves you tired, walk for just half an hour each day. A woman’s physiology is such that the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is high when you’re lactating. So why not take advantage of the situation and knock off the extra baggage in the first three months when you are on maternity leave rather than after you join work and are pressed for time? Keep weight gain to bare minimum during pregnancy and
you won’t have a problem losing it later.” How much is too much? How much weight can you lose or gain without being tagged anorexic or obese respectively? “Gaining around 12 kgs is healthy in a normal pregnancy. The maximum amount of weight one can put on would be 15 kgs, nothing more. If a patient is already obese, I’d advise them against gaining more than six kgs,” says Dr Soni. Dr Bindu Balani M.D., a gynaecologist, offers, “You lose up to six kilos as soon as you give birth. The baby, placenta and liquor (amniotic fluid) make up for that weight which means you have to lose only 10 kgs after having a baby. Of that weight, 10-20 per cent is fluid retention. So that takes off two more kilos off the ‘to-lose’ list.” What about eating for two during a pregnancy? Nobody knows where the concept comes from. There’s no need to pig out on calorieladen food. It is, however, extremely difficult for the Indian woman to ‘diet’ responsibly with mothers and mothers-in-law breathing down their necks, stuffing their faces and making them stay indoors at all times. Most go along with the fussing to maintain peace. What can you do? Remember that the earlier you start your weight loss regime the

Post-Pregnancy Weight
better. Wait a few months and you’re never going to lose that weight. Although, Dr Balani admits that women with thyroid ailments or those already obese to begin with or are suffering from Poly-Cystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) have difficulty losing weight. “Everyone must start going for brisk walks in the first 10 days. If you have had a normal delivery, you can start working out like you used to (pre-pregnancy) within 20 days. If you have had a baby through Caesarean-section (Csection), you can return to normal workouts after 40 days,” advises Dr Soni. Dr Balani also suggests pelvic floor exercises, which women
must start doing as soon as they are discharged from the hospital. Fitness expert Leena Mogre says you must focus on core strengthening to avoid chronic pain as your body loses a lot of calcium and other vital nutrients during the birth of your child. Remember that each pregnancy is different and permissions to exercise depends on your gynaecologist. “Weight loss also depends on how well you have taken care of yourself while you were pregnant,” signs off Mogre. Quick tips: 1) How much weight you gain during pregnancy is very crucial to how soon you can lose weight.
2) Do not workout without your gynaecologist’s permission. 3) Do not starve yourself silly in pursuit of your pre-baby figure. 4) Do not push yourself to work out at the risk of facing a burnout. A healthy, normal baby can take a toll on your physical and mental health. And a cranky baby can absolutely drive you nuts. Ensure that you get enough rest and sleep. 5) Do not stop breastfeeding in the quest to lose weight. Breast milk is essential for your child’s immunity. 6) Avoid going on crash diets in any case; you might end up with chronic pain in the back and other places.

Foods that don’t let you slim down
T
hose low-fat, low-taste alternatives passed off as ‘health foods’ could, in fact, be costing you your health. It’s easy to be misled with labels such as ‘high fiber’, and ‘natural’. In reality, many so called ‘healthy’ foods contain high levels of fat, sugar and

salt. Reading the ingredient list and nutrition facts column could help you choose the right items. Here’s a round up of the things you consider good that may actually be bad: Honey You think honey is healthier and
more natural than sugar? You are wrong. Both contain similarly high levels of glucose. Because honey is denser, one tablespoon actually contains more calories than the same sized spoonful of granulated sugar. Eat too much honey and you’ll gain just as much weight as you will gorging on other sweet stuff. Low-fat salad dressing Scientists at Iowa State University, US, have found that low-fat dressing cancels out the goodness in salad. Conversely, using olive oil, or a little butter, boosted vitamin intake because fat helps your body absorb nutrients from vegetables more efficiently. Breakfast cereals Studies show that people who eat cereal for breakfast tend to be slimmer than those who don’t — but only if they’re opting for a healthy brand. Choose the wrong box and you may as well start your day with a slice of cake, as some cereals are high in sugar and fat. The main ones to watch out for are your flavoured, chocolate and sugar-coated or frosted kids’ ones. So always read the label. Not that you
need to skip the cereal aisle altogether — experts agree that tucking into a bowl of porridge or any other wholegrain cereal is actually healthy. Naturally low in calories and high in fibre, these will help keep you fuller for longer and ward off midmorning snacking. Skimmed milk Although guzzling whole milk has been demonised as a health no-no in recent years, research shows that it could be a better choice than its skimmed counterpart. Whole milk only contains around 4 per cent fat per 100ml as opposed to the 20 per cent plus deemed to be in the ‘high fat’ category. Skimmed milk contains 0.1 per cent fat. So switching from whole to skimmed milk won’t make a huge difference. Skimmed milk is less nutritious because cream contains fatsoluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Research reveals that full-fat milk boosts metabolism and help you burn more calories, while also lowering the risk of heart disease. Raw vegetables Cooking is believed to kill the vitamins and minerals, but studies have found the opposite. While
cooking may destroy some (but not all) vitamin C, the process boosts the uptake of disease-fighting nutrients — antioxidants. A 2008 study found that vegetables such as carrots, spinach, mushrooms, asparagus, cabbage and peppers supply more antioxidants when cooked than when eaten raw. This is because cooking breaks down vegetables’ thick cell walls, making it easier for the body to absorb the nutrients they contain. Steaming is best, then gentle boiling. Frying preserves the least vitamins and minerals. Diet drinks They seem like a straightforward way for soft drink lovers to cut calories but experts think diet drinks could actually scupper weight loss. While the artificial sweeteners in such drinks can convince the taste buds they’re consuming sugar, the brain can’t be tricked so easily. When it’s denied the calories it’s expecting, your body goes on a calorie hunt, making you feel hungry and eat more. Which is why consuming diet drinks can make people more likely to pile on weight, than reduce it.

POOR APPETITE IN CHILDREN >>
Raj Kothuru
O
ne of the worries of parents throughout the world in general is “poor appetite” among their children. It puts a lot of pressure on parents, as they are concerned about the proper growth and well being of the child. Children often need to be begged or bribed to eat their food. Some children go through a stage of disinterest in food and eating. Children, especially in the younger age group never seem to eat. Children turn to become very picky eaters and have poor appetites. We have already discussed Anorexia nervosa and Bulimia, which are also eating disorders among slightly older children in our previous articles. In this article, we focus on a much younger group of children aged between 3 and 8 where no trauma or psychological disorder is the underlying cause of the behaviour. The parent is simply dealing with a young child, who due to various normal reasons shows a much reduced interest in food. Normally, a child will eat when it is hungry. When the child refuses to eat or generally has a poor appetite, the reasons behind that have to be identified and addressed correctly. Sometimes, the reasons could be very simple as a phase the child is going through or the child is simply not hungry at that time or has had too much of something else to eat, intestinal worms, simple behaviour patterns somehow framed (which can be easily
changed with some effort). What is needed is a little encouragement for the child to eat well and a little monitoring over its eating pattern. In cases like this, the child might neglect food for a short period of time however, will once again start eating normally by itself in a matter of time. Sometimes, there could be much serious reasons like underlying disease, medications, emotional issues etc which pose a real risk to the health of the child. TYPES OF POOR APPETITE: 1.) Eating restricted range of foods, extreme faddiness where the child eats only a limited range of foods and does not try new foods. These children are not preoccupied with their weight or body shape. 2.) Restricted eating where the child
eats a range of foods but has very little appetite and eats very little. The child is not preoccupied with its weight, does not want to lose weight and seems perfectly happy. This condition is more common in the pre-school years and is relatively harmless as children tend to grow and develop in the normal way. If the problem persists for several years, however, it may have an impact on the growth of the child and so may become problematic. 3.) Food refusal where the child refuses food as a means of achieving or obtaining other things, not eating in certain situations or certain places etc. 4.) Eating semi solid or pureed food which is inappropriate for the child’s age or just drinking milk or liquid nutritional supplements as the child finds it easier to consume food this way
due to laziness or to save time. WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? Putting the child on some nutrient enriched powdered milk is not the solution. It merely diverts the child’s attention from consuming wholesome and normal food and does not help in any way to develop the child’s eating habits to include a wide range of foods. Parents should discuss the child’s eating habits with their health practitioner and establish the underlying cause of the lack of appetite to rule out any reasons that might be of concern or needs immediate medical attention. Gentle yet effective medication, like Homeopathy is required to safely treat the child and ensure that the child’s nutritional balance is not affected and to enable the child to develop a natural affinity toward food. Food preferences are developed early in life and once they are established, they are hard to break. Therefore, parents should encourage healthy food choices for their children by introducing vegetables and fruits early to the child via their diet. Vegetable mashes, fruit and vegetable juices, foods prepared with whole foods and fruits etc should form a vital part of the child’s diet and the value of healthy nutritional food and food appreciation should be taught to the child. Limit snacks, junk food, milk and milk based drinks and artifical juices,
allow the child to feed itself, allow the child to skip a meal now and then, give small portions to train the child to clear its plate and ask for more if he or she wants it, and do not force the child to eat the food it hates. HOMEOPATHIC HELP: Homeopathy can holistically understand and treat the child to naturally stimulate appetite and address any underlying cause for the poor appetite. Homeopathy will not only standardize the child’s appetite but also strengthen the child’s immune system, leaving most parents surprised by the reduced number of other infections as well. Homeopathic child turns out to be a healthy and happy child. Homeopathic supplements are natural minerals which naturally balance the child’s mineral requirements. As an example to explain Homeopathy’s highly individualised treatment , the Homeopath takes an exhaustive case study of the child and prescribes very specific remedies. Some of the Homeopathic remedies that can help in children with poor appetite are Antimonium Crudum, Cinchona Officinalis, Cina, Lycopodium, Pulsatilla etc. (Please note that no medication should be taken without consulting your health practitioner). Fake laugh at bad joke a terrible thing!
T
hose who have almost perfected the art of fake laughter over the years may have wasted their time, as a new study has found that even the most realistic efforts to feign amusement does not fool any one. Scientists say that people are ‘extremely good’ at distinguishing even the most realistic sounding fake giggles. It found that volunteers could almost always tell the difference between someone genuinely laughing and what the experts called as ‘social laughter’. Sophie Scott, professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College London, carried out brain scans on volunteers, who were made to listen to expressions of disgust, a real belly laugh and a realistic fake one. The volunteers were almost always able to identify a false laugh, she said.
“Most of our laughter is posed,” the Daily Mail quoted Scott as saying. “We use it as a way of keeping conversation going, as a way of showing our friends we like them or impressing people. “They know it’s not genuine, but I don’t know if they always mind. You are appreciating what they are doing and getting a positive affiliation going,” Scott said. The MRI scans also exposed how hearing real and fake laughter activates two different areas of our brains. Fake laughter triggers more brain activity - in the medial prefrontal cortex, associated with problem-solving - as we try to work out the reason why the person is doing it. Genuine laughter simply activates auditory areas in the temporal lobe - where we process all sound.
