May May is the fifth month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and one of seven Gregorian months with the length of 31 days.

May is a month of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere and spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore May in the Southern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent of November in the Northern Hemisphere and vice versa.

The month May has been named for the Greek goddess Maia, who was identified with the Roman era goddess of fertility, Bona Dea, whose festival was held in May. Conversely, the Roman poet Ovid provides a second etymology, in which he says that the month of May is named for the maiores, Latin for “elders,” and that the following month (June) is named for the iuniores, or “young people” (Fasti VI.88). In both common Western calendrical systems, no other month begins on the same day of the week as May. This month and June are the only two months that have this trait, though the first day of August in a common year and the first day of October in a leap year are also unique. No other month ends on the same day of the week as May.

Pak distances itself: US op in line with US policy to finish him wherever found I

slamabad: Pakistan on Monday appeared to distance itself from the operation that killed alQaeda chief Osama bin Laden, with authorities here saying that it was a US intelligence-driven operation. “In an intelligence-driven operation, Osama bin Laden was killed in the surroundings of Abbottabad in the early hours of this morning,” Foreign Office spokesperson Tehmina Janjua said in a statement issued hours after US President Barack Obama announced the killing of the al-Qaeda chief. “This operation was conducted by the US forces in accordance with declared US policy that Osama bin Laden will be eliminated in a direct action by the US forces, wherever found in the world.” However, Januja added, Osama’s death “illustrates the resolve of the international community, including Pakistan, to fight and eliminate terrorism. It constitutes a major setback to terrorist organisations around the world”. “It is Pakistan’s stated policy that it will not allow its soil to be used in terrorist attacks against any country. Pakistan’s political leadership, parliament, state institutions and the whole nation are fully united in their resolve to eliminate terrorism,” Janjua

The house where it is believed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden lived in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Bin Laden, the glowering mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks that killed thousands of people, was slain in his hideout in Pakistan early Monday in a firefight with U.S. forces, ending a manhunt that spanned a frustrating decade. said. President Obama telephoned President Asif Ali Zardari on “the successful US operation”, she said. The spokesperson contended that Pakistan has “played a significant role in efforts to eliminate terrorism”. She

said Pakistan had “extremely effective intelligence sharing arrangements with several intelligence agencies, including that of the US” and will continue to support international efforts against terrorism.

“Al-Qaeda had declared war on Pakistan. Scores of al-Qaeda sponsored terrorist attacks resulted in deaths of thousands of innocent Pakistani men, women and children. Almost 30,000 Pakistani lost their

lives in terrorist attacks in the last few years,” Janjua said. Pakistan’s dilemma isn’t surprising, particularly as the country was embarrassingly kept in the dark till the operation was successfully accomplished. “We are very concerned that he (Osama) was inside Pakistan, but this is something that we’re going to continue to work with the Pakistani government on,” a senior administration official said. The Obama Administration shared intelligence on the Osama operation with no other country, including Pakistan, sources said. “That was for one reason and one reason alone: We believed it was essential to the security of the operation and our personnel... that only a very small group of people inside our own government knew of the operation,” an official said. Giving reasons for not contacting Islamabad, officials said since 9/11, the US had made it clear to Pakistan that it would pursue Osama wherever he might be. “Pakistan has long understood that we are at war with the al-Qaeda. The US had a legal and moral obligation to act on the information it had,” the official said. At the very least, Osama’s death in Pakistan now will be highly embarrassing to the country’s military and intelligence establishment.

Indian interest at royal wedding

N

EW DELHI: The much awaited royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton is generating interest in India with various hotels, honeymoon travel agencies, airlines, television channels and cafes gearing up for the event on April 29. Jaipur and Jodhpur, tourist places of Rajasthan, figure among top royal honeymoon destinations for Prince William and Kate Middleton picked in a recent survey by a team of hotel experts. Experts at hotels.com, a leading provider of hotel accommodation worldwide has set out scouring and researching the globe for places befitting the royal couple. Umaid Bhawan Palace (Jodhpur) and Rambagh Palace (Jaipur) figure among the top seven dream destinations that would probably

be picked by Prince William and Kate Middleton to spend the first few weeks of their new life together according to information by hotels. com. El Careyes Beach Resort (Jalisco, Mexico), Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa (Bora Bora, French Polynesia), Mount Errigal Hotel (County Donegal, Ireland) and Conrad Hotel, Rangali Island- (The Maldives) make up the rest of the list. Animal rights organisation PETA India has sent the royal couple traditional Indian wedding sari made of luxurious faux silk and a faux silk sherwani to William. The garments are being called ahimsa garments because no animals, not even the tiniest of insects, were harmed in its production, says the animal rights body. “All animals, from cows to

silkworms, share the will to live and be pain-free”, says PETA India’s chief functionary Poorva Joshipura. “With all the beautiful cruelty-free materials available, everyone can have a wardrobe that’s fit for royalty without hurting anyone.” With the gothic structure of Westminster Abbey being decked up as the venue for the royal nuptials, TLC, the travel and lifestyle channel of the Discovery Network, has already dedicated a week of special programmes. “Providing an intimate look at the royals through exclusive and archived footage as well as interviews with family, close friends and passionate royal enthusiasts, Royal Wedding Week features six special premiere programmes,” says company officials.

Shame no Indian was found competent for coach’s job: Sangakkara

N

ew Delhi: Former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara said it is a “shame” that no Indian was found competent to coach the World champions. Sangakkara was surprised that despite so many exceptional Indian cricketers around, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) found no one competent for the job. “Having produced some many good cricketers in the region...it is a shame that no suitable candidate was found competent to take over the national side,” he said. Sangakkara said it important for the boards to make the full use of the home grown coaches. “It is important that home grown coaching ability and talent is exploited to the fullest like home grown playing talent and ability. “In Sri Lanka we lost a great opportunity in Chandika Hathurusingha, who was capable enough to take over the national side. Unfortunately, we lost him to Australia,” Sangakkara was quoted as saying by NDTV. Hathurusingha, a one-time shadow coach of the Sri Lanka team, was suspended by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on disciplinary grounds in June before he decided to migrate to Australia. During his three-year tenure, Hathurusingha played a crucial role in the shaping the players’ mental make-up which made them successful at international level. Sangakkara admitted getting a good coach is a tough task for all the boards.

Osama body identified by wife, DNA tests

T

he US used multiple means to confirm the identity of Osama bin Laden during and after the firefight in which he was killed, before placing his body in the North Arabian Sea from aboard a US aircraft carrier, senior US officials said Monday. The al-Qaeda leader was identified by name by a woman believed to be one of his wives, Osama had several, who was present at his Pakistan compound at the time of the US raid. He also was visually identified by members of the US raid squad, a senior intelligence official told reporters at a Pentagon briefing. The intelligence official also said quite a bit of unspecified material was collected by US forces during the raid. Without describing the material, the official said it is being analysed by a team of people at the CIA. The officials said Osama was killed toward the end of the firefight, which took place overnight Monday in a building at a compound north of Islamabad, the Pakistani capital. His body was put aboard the USS Carl Vinson and placed into the North Arabian Sea. Traditional Islamic procedures for handling the remains were followed, the officials said, including washing the corpse, placing it in a white sheet. Preparations for atsea burial began at 1:10 am Monday and were completed at 2 am, one official said.

Another record? 68 million watched World Cup final

N

EW DELHI/MUMBAI: Team India’s victory at Wankhede will not only go down in history as one of the greatest cricketing victories for the country, but also as one of the most viewed sporting events on television ever. An unprecedented 67.6 million people watched the gripping final that had most Indians at the edge of their seats. The number of viewers on Saturday—according to the data collated by audience measurement agency aMap—has surpassed the Indo-Pak semi-final that was perhaps the most anticipated match of the tournament for the subcontinent audience. The number of viewers for the semi-final was 67.3 million. The other semifinal—Sri Lanka vs New Zealand—paled in comparison with only 32 million viewers. Incidentally, TRP viewership for India matches leaped from 3.7 before the quarterfinals to 6.4. About 53 million watched the India vs Australia clash in the quarter-finals. aMap vice-president Jinita Shah said, “Yesterday’s viewership broke all records. Every Indian was glued on to TV to see the big win. Viewership increased almost four times on Saturday.’’

According to aMap, 64% of cable and satellite homes watched the Men in Blue clinch the World Cup. The average viewership rating for the final was 13.6, which peaked at 21.4 during the end of the match—higher than the high-voltage Indo-Pak encounter at Mohali. However, most industry watchers will wait for the TAM ratings that most media agencies subscribe to for a full analysis. The aMap data, though, is an indication of the unprecedented viewership that the final clocked. The average time spent recorded on the match was an impressive 187 minutes. “The World Cup finals will break all records possible as far as cricket viewership or any other programme in recent times is concerned. Peaks could touch ratings of 40 and average would be higher than 30. Considering India won and it happened in India while the contests were well fought, this World Cup has given the sponsors the biggest returns compared to other years,” said Ajit Varghese, MD of Maxus, which bought media for brands like Vodafone, Fiat, Nokia and Hero Honda among others.

Immigration for prospective Migrants and Students A

ustralian Immigration has gone through some major changes in the last year or so. The current Australian government has made it tough for Skilled Migration with a shorter Skilled Occupation List, and it will get a lot more difficult to meet the criteria with the new Points Test that may be introduced from 1st July 2011. This new points test will virtually halt Skilled Migration and may help the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) clear up the current backlog. But this will come at a cost. I don’t think the strict new points test can last for too long as it will create a skills vacuum that will hurt a lot of employers and industries. Small and medium size employers are already finding it difficult to find employees as tens of thousands of students left last year when education and immigration was decoupled. With the new points test, large employers will also get affected as skilled migration further slows down. Last year, when student numbers were drastically going down and Australian Universities were having financial trouble, the Department of Immigration decided to lower the Assessment Level for Bachelors and Masters courses for countries like India and China, from where a majority of the students come. Both India and China are now Assessment Level 3 countries for Bachelors and

Syed Kabir Masters courses, which makes it easier for them to show funds and sponsors for the Student Visa. On 2nd April 2011, a new Fraud Public Interest Criterion (PIC) has been applied to Skilled and Employer Sponsored visas. It is strongly advisable that applicant’s refrain from using any type of fraudulent documents or information during the visa application process, as this may result in a refusal of the application as well as a three-year bar from further applications. The Skills Occupation List will also be updated from time to time depending on Australia’s Skills needs. Prospective migrants and students cannot be sure if the occupation that is now on the list will still be there in a few years time, when they gain their experience in that particular occupation, or graduate in that particular course. But to plan for their future migration,

they’ll nevertheless have to take a calculated risk and choose a course or work in the field that is currently in the Skilled Occupation List, and hope that occupation will still be there in a few years. When choosing a course, students should first look into their area of interest, their own educational background and their IELTS Score. Australian education is worldclass, especially in the Bachelors and Masters level. Therefore, the knowledge they learn in these courses can be of use globally and create a career path for them. Currently, the Student Visa process is under review by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Similarly the Employer Sponsored and Regional Sponsored visas are also under review. New laws and policies for both the student visa and Employer Sponsored visas will be announced in the future. Finally, it is important for all prospective migrants and students to get accurate advice when making a decision on their immigration and student visas. It is also important to get a good experienced Migration Consultant and discuss everything in detail with them. When things are planned early, it is more likely to succeed when the migration laws are constantly changing and becoming stricter. See ad on page 5a.

‘No one can replace Sathya Sai Baba’ M

embers say there will be no chairman to head the Sathya Sai Baba Central Trust; management will discuss issues and arrive at a mutual conclusion

Putting speculation about who’ll be the successor of the late godman at rest, the Sathya Sai Baba Central Trust declared that there will be no chairman of the organisation. S S Naganand, member of the council of management of the trust, speaking exclusively to MiD Day, said that there is no need to have a chairman right now. “The position of a chairman is quite ornamental. Besides, it is highly inconsequential at the moment. Hence, there will be no chairman, and the trust will discuss the issues that come up and will arrive at a mutual conclusion,” he said. The management that comprises of nine members five trustees and four members of the council will carry forward the activities. Denying that any will has been left behind, he added that Sathya Sai didn’t consider anyone to be his family and didn’t possess any assets that could have necessitated a will. “Baba renounced his elder brother on October 12, 1940 at the age of 14. He didn’t even attend his mother’s last rites. Further, the trust handled all the financial transactions and hence there was no need for a will,” he said.

No substitute When asked the reason for not appointing someone to head the organisation, he replied, “No one can replace Baba. Besides, the management is competent enough to decide on crucial issues.” While many devotees are questioning Satyajit’s position amidst speculations that the trust is now trying to downplay his role, the management clarified that they are not questioning his devotion, but made it clear that he won’t have anything to do with the trust either.

‘Satyajit was paid’ “Some students from Baba’s higher education institutions expressed willingness to serve him even after they have passed out. Satyajit was one of them. Such students were assigned different jobs and were paid a salary. Satyajit was supposed to assist the central accounts department and he was paid a reasonable salary to make his living. He was never in the running to be the chairman,” Naganand revealed. Clarifying the reason in delay in providing medical treatment to Baba, former chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry and one of the trustees Venu Srinivasan said, “Sathya Sai Baba himself chose the doctors and interacted with them. He had not taken any of the trust members into confidence while

choosing his doctors. Besides, all the health bulletins were made public on a daily basis.”

Just a rumour? Amidst rumuors of the glass casket being ordered by the trust two weeks before Baba passed away on April 24, the management disagreed with the hearsay. “We have not ordered any glass casket. Devotees who want to serve in any way possible sent us different things. One such devotee sent us the glass casket. We don’t have anything to do with it,” said one of the trustees. However, many devotees are now waiting to see whether a chairman would indeed be chosen after 11 days of the last rites, as speculated.

Health report Janardhana Reddy, district collector of Ananthapur, said that the government has filed its report to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) regarding the medical condition of Sathya Sai Baba. “The report was filed following the directives specified by the NHRC. As I wasn’t a respondent, I don’t have details in this regard. However, I do know that now the NHRC will have to respond on that report,” said Reddy. High Court Advocate Kommireddy Azad had earlier filed a petition with the NHRC seeking to get details about Baba’s health so that his devotees could be reassured.

Gaddafi son, 3 grandchildren killed in NATO airstrike

T

The government of Muammar Gaddafi said he survived an airstrike in Tripoli late Saturday night that killed one of his sons and three grandchildren, in the sharpest intensification yet of the NATO air campaign intended to pressure the Libyan leader from power. The son, Seif al-Arab, 29, and the

grandchildren, all said to be younger than 12, were possibly the first confirmed casualties in the airstrikes on the Libyan capital. And while the deaths could not be independently verified, the campaign against Libya’s most densely populated areas raised new questions about how broadly NATO is interpreting its United

Nations mandate to protect civilians. It is the second airstrike in seven days to hit a location intimately close to the Libyan leader, following a midnight attack last week that destroyed an office building in his compound where he and his aides sometimes work.

Air India in worst debt trap

N

ew Delhi: Air India has landed itself in the worst debt trap, where the airline is spending all its earnings in repayment of interest on aircraft loans, working capital, aircraft capital and fuel expenses. It has had to take more loans, at higher interest rate, to meet the salaries of its 32,000 employees and other expenses. “Air India has been incurring a loss of Rs 26 crore per day and has landed itself in debt trap from where it is not possible to come out until government comes to our rescue,” a senior Air India official said. The national carrier’s earning is Rs 36 crore per day, of which Rs 22 crore comes from domestic sector and Rs 14 crore from international. “But we are spending Rs 62 crore every day,” he said, adding the airline is suffering heavy losses ever since the government gave the purchase order of 111 aircraft. “Interestingly, after payments for fuel, aircraft loan and interest repayments, the national carrier is left with no cash to meet the salaries of its employees, pay interest on

Amrita Rao She’s back REMEMBER this petite stunner who wowed us in Ishq Vishk, Main Hoon Na and Vivah? After several flops (Shortkut - The Con Is On, Victory and My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves to name a few), Amrita Rao has been noticeably missing from the silver screen. However, the 29-year-old actress is back as a leading lady in Love U... Mr. Kalakaar!, a film directed by debutant director S. Manasvi, about the unlikely match between an ambitious management trainee Ritu (played by Amrita) and an artist Sahil (played by Tusshar Kapoor). Amrita, who hasn’t been seen in a leading role since 2009, had been working on two films during the two-year gap; a Ken Ghosh romantic family drama co-starring with Neil Nitin Mukesh as the younger versions of Rishi Kapoor and Hema Malini as well as The Legend Of Kunal, a period film starring Amitabh Bachchan, Tabu and Arjun Rampal. However, both films were stalled because of the recession. “The two projects were supposed to be released in 2010 but due to recession both the films did not take off,” Amrita told the Press Trust of India. In another interview with The Indian Express, she added: “Only in 2010 I didn’t have a release, and it’s amusing if anyone perceives it as a ‘comeback’.” May 2011 Edition

working capital, aircraft spares and other operational cost,” the official, who requested anonymity, said. “We have to take fresh loans from banks at the rate of about 14 per cent to pay the salaries and meet other expenses. We have been facing this situation since June last year,” he said. The national carrier has an outstanding unsecured short term working capital loan of Rs 20,763 crore and an annual interest burden of Rs 2,400 crore, at the rate of 12 to 14 per cent, which is quite high, he said. Apart from this, the cash-strapped carrier also has a payment overdue of Rs 3,320 crore to oil companies and other vendors. “Due to poor debt-equity ratio, no bank is ready to give us loan at lower rates, around nine per cent, which is available to other airlines,” the official said. He said in February 2010, the Group of Ministers had said that Air India would be given a ‘Letter of Comfort’ to enable the airline avail loans at lower rates. “But it seems that nobody is really

caring for the survival of this airline and there is no progress on this front since the past year. “Now, Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi has promised that he would get the letter from the Finance Minister but it could be done only by June,” the official said, adding once “we get this ‘Letter of Comfort’, we would be able to save Rs 780 crore per year.” The airline daily spends Rs five crore and Rs three crore respectively as payment of fuel bills and expenses at foreign stations. It makes a payment of Rs five crore for repayments of principal and Rs three crore per day for interest on loans taken for acquisition of aircraft. With the jet fuel rates high in India, it has to spend Rs 18 crore as fuel expenses and Rs six crore as interest on working capital. After making these payments, the national carrier is left with only Rs two crore, the official said. For meeting salary expenses of Rs nine crore and other operational expenses of Rs 12 crore, it has to borrow at higher rates, he added.

Joshi PAC chief again, Cong has a new team N

ew Delhi: Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi has been re-appointed as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) despite talk in Congress circles of a bid to oppose the move. Joshi, whose term ended on Saturday, was nominated by the BJP, following which Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar reappointed him as PAC chief for another year. Interestingly, the Congress has elected a formidable team to the PAC, with the new members including Girija Vyas, Jayanthi Natarajan, Sandeep Dikshit, Jagdambika Pal

and Sanjay Nirupam - all familiar Congress voices during important debates. Among those who have been dropped are Satpal Maharaj, Navin Jindal and Jitendra Singh, while Saifuddin Soz, K S Rao and K Sudhakaran have been re-elected. The BJP has replaced Yashwant Sinha, Ramen Deka and Kalraj Mishra with Anant Kumar Hegde, Yasso Naik and Prakash Javadekar. JD(U) member N K Singh, who had recused himself from a sitting of the committee, has been left out of the new PAC.

‘Sela Pass very difficult terrain, wind velocity high’

Mother’s Day Celebration in India are slowly catching!

T

he concept of celebrating Mothers Day on the second Sunday of May is very new in India and it can be said that in a time span of less than a decade, Mothers Day has been a great success. In the presence of umpteenth number of existing festivals, it is a remarkable achievement for a foreign festival to make its presence felt in the vast and culturally diverse country like India.

Globalisation, to a great extent has helped to make this Western, or mainly American festival to make its presence felt in India. Besides interaction of Indians with the West is at an all time high. A lot many people have been in US or have their relatives staying there. Internet and satellite revolution has made information about other cultures more accessible than ever. But the reason behind the success of Mothers Day in India can be attributed to the emotions which are attached to the festival. Mothers are mothers everywhere, they are as much loved and respected in India as in any other part of the world. Perhaps Indians have always felt the need of such a day which is devoted solely to mothers. Mothers Day gives them all the opportunity to celebrate such a day.

hahid Kapoor with his boy next door looks has again entered into Yash Raj camp for a movie which has not started its shooting. He has already done two films under this banner Badmaash Company and Dil Bole Hadipaa both being below expectations. The actor is busy now-a-days with final work for ‘Mausam’ his upcoming film made by his father Pankaj Kapoor. The film stars Shahid Kapoor opposite Sonam Kapoor along with Pankaj Kapoor. The film will mark the first time that Shahid

bollywood music Music Review :

A

READY

lthough this time keeping the genre of the film, READY in mind and the fact that it is an all out entertainer, a true blue Anees Bazmee film, we know that the music will be more commercial and will have lots of ‘dhamaal’ and ‘masti’. Naturally, expectations are always of gargantuan proportions especially because it’s a T-Series production, a company which has always believed in providing wholesome entertainment through high quality music and naturally with Sohail Khan Productions and Rawail Grandsons Entertainment also joining we can expect some really good music. Moreover, the fact that it’s Pritam at the helm of affairs whose (almost) cent percent success records speaks for him, shall we say more? Well, without wasting any time, ready, get set and go and let’s get the ball rolling! Let’s come straight to the song that has been in the news ever since it’s picturisation on the most happening actor of Bollywood at present, the hot dude Salman Khan and certainly the most hyped composition of the album, ‘Character Dheela’ and check out if it does deserve all the attention that it is getting even prior to it’s release. Well, with a hiphop, pacy rhythm that sets the pulse racing, rap that is catchy a la Pritam ‘ishtyle’, coupled with Neeraj Shridhar’s par ‘excellante’ rendition (not to mention Amrita Kak as well who is top class here) along

Joker to have a song with 10 languages F

with music addendums (specially highly rhythmic electronic pipe sound piece in the background) that just befit this light on the ears, easy to hum number. This song definitely has what it takes to reach the top of the charts within days or should we say, hours (!) of its release. And surely lyrics also deserve mention as Amitabh Bhattacharya who has been known more for his abstract and intellectually gratifying ‘hat ke’ lyrics for composers like Amit Trivedi gets a chance to prove that he can wield his pen even for highly commercial/ ‘masala’ numbers. His lyrics with cynical overtones, which take a dig at hypocrisy of the ‘holier than thou’ people and especially the catchline ‘character dheela’ will be identified by not only the masses but the classes as well. There is mention of last year’s hottest item numbers, ‘Munni’ and Shiela also, ‘Faraq padta hai kya baahon mein Munni hai ya Shiela hai’. Director : Anees Bazmee Music : Pritam and Devi Sri Prasad Lyrics : Amitabh Bhattacharya, Neelesh Mishra, Ashish Pandit and Kumaar Starring : Salman Khan, Asin, Arya Babbar, Paresh Rawal and Mahesh Manjrekar.

ilm Joker but director Shirish Kunder is dead serious when it comes to his second film. For this Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha starrer that goes on floor this month, Shirish is now all set to film a song which is made of - hold your breath - 10 languages. A dance number, it is sung by Daler Mehendi and is a fusion track. “That’s right; we have already recorded the song and would be picturising it in the Chandigarh schedule which kick-starts on Valentines Day (14th February). The uniqueness about this song is that it has lyrics belonging to 10 languages - Hindi, English, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam”, says Shirish who has earlier directed Akshay in his debut outing Jaan-E-Mann. Now an effort like this could well take the song in the record books because as far as Bollywood outings are concerned, the record so far is held by Angrezi Mein Kehte Hai from Amitabh Bachchan starrer Khud-Daar (1982) which had lyrics in five languages - English, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali and Punjabi. With the song from Joker bringing in ten languages, it is miles ahead of the competition. “Well, we are not thinking of any records as of now. What we want is that we should have fun while getting the song on screen and audience should be enjoying it”, says Shirish who is co-producing the film along with Akshay Kumar, “Farah would be choreographing the song.” To be shot outdoors, the song which has been composed by newcomer GV Prakash and written by Shirish himself has an Indian melody to it with a hip hop groove. It would be picturised on Akshay and Sonakshi and is already being touted as a major highlight in Joker.

Nissan Leaf Nismo RC prototype tests battery tech on the track

19a

Apple sees another big quarter

L

ooking to breathe a bit of excitement into its electric vehicle efforts, Nissan will be putting its Leaf of the race track--if but in name alone.

Debuting at the 2011 New York auto show, the 100% electric Nissan Leaf Nismo RC (Racing Competition) prototype shares little more than its lithiumion battery technology, general styling cues, and its name with the Nissan Leaf we’re familiar with. The RC wheelbase is 3.9-inch shorter wheelbase, overall height has been chopped by 13.9 inches, and there are two fewer doors. However, the racer is 0.8 inches longer overall and 6.7 inches wider than the production hatch. The battery pack and inverter move to a mid-ship orientation and now send power to the rear wheels, rather than the front, via a high-response 80kW AC synchronous motor that generates 107 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. That doesn’t sound like a ton of power, but remember the Nismo RC is using close to a stock battery pack. Also similar to the configuration is the quick charge port that can bring the RC’s battery pack to an 80% charge--although the connection is now beneath the rear cowl, rather than on the front bumper. We’ll be seeing more of the Nissan Leaf Nismo RC prototype at the 2011 Ney York auto show later this week, so stay tuned for more photos and details as they emerge.

Following last quarter’s record setting revenues, Apple once again beat expectations led by strong iPhone and Mac sales. Apple’s second fiscal quarter revenue came in at $24.67 billion, or $6.40 per share. That’s way above the $23.34 billion and $5.36 per share that Wall Street analysts had been expecting, and it puts revenue growth at 83 percent compared with the same quarter last year. “With quarterly revenue growth of 83 percent and profit growth of 95 percent, we’re firing on all cylinders,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement. “We will continue to innovate on all fronts throughout the remainder of the year.” Leading the way was the iPhone, of which Apple said it sold a whopping 18.65 million units, 113 percent more than in the same quarter last year. This was the first quarter to include sales of the iPhone compatible with Verizon Wireless’ network, which went on sale in February. Verizon’s CEO had rebuffed reports that sales had been underwhelming. Data from a Comscore study earlier this month also suggested Verizon sales had been strong, pushing the gadget to the position of top-acquired phone for that month. And in the news most of the tech world had been waiting for, Apple revealed it sold 4.69 million iPads during the quarter. Much as Hollywood does with box office figures, Apple has a habit of announcing opening weekend unit sales, though it had stayed mum on iPad 2 numbers, with analysts pushing estimates in the 5 million to 9 million units range for the quater. This number comes well under those estimates, and does not include a breakdown of how many of the units were the iPad 2, which went on sale in early March--just two weeks before the end of the quarter. Apple said it sold 3.76 million Macs during the quarter, representing a 28 percent growth from the same quarter last year. Included in that number is the new MacBook Pro refresh with Intel’s Thunderbolt technology, which was released in late February. The quarter also included the second-generation MacBook Air, which had its refresh back in October.

On the decline were iPods, of which Apple said it sold 9.02 million units during the quarter, a 17 percent drop from the same quarter last year. During the company’s earnings conference call, Apple Senior Vice President and CFO Peter Oppenheimer said that more than half of those units were the iPod Touch. Oppenheimer also pointed out that the company still had more than 70 percent of the MP3 player market cornered according to data from the NPD group, and that the iPod continued to be the top-selling MP3 player in most countries the company tracks. On the sunny side of the music picture, Apple’s iTunes business raked in more than $1.4 billion in sales during the quarter, up $1.1 billion from the same quarter last year. The company does not provide a breakdown of how the digital products that make up the store, like music, videos, and applications sold, so it’s difficult to tell where the boost came from. During the earnings call, the company noted that it was up to 189 million iOS devices sold through the end of the quarter, no doubt helping to push digital content purchases up. Apple said it continues to see big gains in Asia, where the company saw its greatest growth with a profit increase of 151 percent during the quarter. Oppenheimer said the company’s Mac sales in the Asia-Pacific market grew 76 percent year over year, with greater China pushing sales of the iPhone up to three times previous levels. The company’s retail business, which turns 10 in May, is set to receive its 1 billionth visitor. During the earnings call, Oppenheimer said sales in Apple’s retail stores were up 32 percent during the quarter, with the average revenue of the 323 stores sitting at $9.9 million. The retail stores continue to be a place where the company can increase its market share, Oppenheimer said, noting that nearly half of the Macs sold there were bought by customers who were not Mac users. Apple said it plans to open an additional 40 stores in fiscal 2011, with the majority of those being outside the U.S. Apple’s stock was going for $355.72 a share in afterhours trading.

take still pictures and with Apple’s built in Photo Booth App on the iPad 2, 9 camera effects are manipulatable with multitouch.

There are only a few differences between the original iPad and iPad2 so the question comes down to whether or not any one of them are compelling enough to necessitate an upgrade. Where comparisons are concerned between the iPad and iPad2, the screen is the same size along with the resolution: 9.7-inch 1024×768, storage options 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB, battery life will both iPads remain the same. The iOS 4.3, as well on both will be alike through an iOS upgrade.

2x Faster, 9x Better Graphics and a Gyroscope

This feature article would make it easier for you to decide if an upgrade is appropriate or not.

Face Time and Dual Cameras The iPad2 has two cameras being a front facing VGA and a rear facing 720p HD one. This means that the iPad2 can use Apple’s video calling software FaceTime. This was not possible on the original iPad as it was not fitted with a single camera. These features may be great for people to video chat with their friends who also own a FaceTime supported device like the iPod Touch Fourth generation, iPhone 4 or a Mac. With the camera option available, users can also

The iPad2 comes with an Apple A5 processor the company states that the CPU is twice as powerful and the GPU up to nine times as powerful as its predecessor, the Apple A4 which was fitted on the original iPad.

A new powerful A5 processor They have thrown a gyroscope into the iPad2, which will give developers and gamers alike an advantage over the smoother, more beautiful, better controlled games for iPad 2.Next generation gaming requires latest generation of hardware, so if that tempts you, you might want to upgrade.

512 MB RAM Along with A5 processor, Apple has fitted a 512 MB DDR2 RAM clocked at 1066 MHz which is much more than the 256MB on the original iPad. This certainly would warrant an upgrade if you have been annoyed with the lack of RAM available on the first one.

ntel is now moving not-so-subtly toward Android as the default operating system for handheld devices, as the chipmaker yields to market realities. With Android leading Apple’s iOS software in smartphone market share according to calculations by Gartner (and other market researchers), the Google operating system has plenty of momentum. That’s not the case for Intel’s in-house MeeGo operating system--which is not even a blip on the handheld device market-share radar screen--and is only staying in the public’s eye because of Intel’s stubborn support. And Windows 7, which is not optimized for tablets, will never be a viable operating system for handheld devices (smartphones and tablets), despite attempts by some Asia-based device makers to market tablets. Enter Android. On Tuesday, after Intel announced impressive earnings, CEO Paul Otellini described--during a conference call--pretty clearly to what degree Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) is now in focus at Intel. “We’re actively doing the port” for Android 3.0 and “my sense is the bulk of the units, the [models], this year will be Android,” he said, referring to tablets using Intel’s Atom processor. Almost in the same breath he mentioned that Intel “lost Nokia,” implying that the chipmaker also lost an important partner for phones based on MeeGo--which had been launched as a joint IntelNokia project. And that’s not all Otellini said about the loss of Nokia and future smartphones. Intel is now “focusing on [telecommunications] carriers who want their own devices and also on handset manufacturers,” he said. It’s probably safe to say that more than a few of those handset makers will be using Android. So, the question is, as Intel revs up its handheld push with future Atom processors--which should include dual-core variants of the “Medfield” chip-will this make Android phones an even more potent rival to Apple’s iPhone and, down the road, result in compelling Android-based tablet designs that begin to chip away at Apple’s tablet dominance? We may not get the answer until 2012, when Intel is expected to put its best foot forward with highly power efficient but relatively speedy smartphone and tablet chips.

iOS App Review - Meal Snap

K

eeping track of your weight and how much you’re eating used to be a difficult and timeconsuming task. The App Store has given us dozens of health and fitness applications that complete most of the equation, but they all rely on entering in the number of calories in each meal in order to keep an accurate diary of eating patterns. Recently, May 2011 Edition

a new crop of apps have appeared that use a searchable database of products where the nutritional information is already known, but since it only works with prepackaged food, home made snacks and meals are difficult to enter. Aiming to solve this problem once and for all is Meal Snap, a new application that (as its name suggests) requires nothing more than

a photo of whatever you’re currently eating to reveal the number of calories it contains. Though Meal Snap would benefit greatly from including other statistics when it processes food, this is by far the best solution on the iPhone for keeping a food diary. A process of looking up the number of calories a meal has on the internet, or scanning the pack to find the

magic number (then converting from kilojoules as is often the case) has been reduced to taking a photo on your phone and waiting a few seconds. That’s a huge step forward for encouraging people to check up on their eating – with so many other barriers removed, the one thing left to do is remember to pull out your iPhone every time you eat.

“I am portraying a high level role”-Rushiraj Pawar

R

ushiraj Pawar aka Chandragupta Maurya in conversation with Reporter about his new show on Imagine...

How do you feel portraying a historic figure like Chandragupta Maurya? I am really happy that I am portraying a high level role and I know I have to cope up with it. I was really nervous in the beginning as I had no idea whether I will be able to portray such a prominent character. I consider myself lucky to get the role because there are a lot of strugglers in the industry who are really talented than me trying to make a mark. What were the preparations you did for the character? Actually I had to learn the way Maurya talk and the body language he carries. Also, there are a lot of Sanskrit words used in the speech; I had to work a little on that. Frankly speaking, that helped me in my studies as well. You are playing the central character, were you nervous taking the whole responsibility of the show? Actually the role is very challenging and I never thought that I could make it. I was indeed very nervous because I am working under a big banner which has made shows like Dharam Veer, Pritviraj Chauhan etc, that too in the lead role. Also I am doing a show for a channel like Imagine. In all manner I am trying to give my hundred percent to the work.

Hrithik Roshan is TV’s highest paid star

(Manish Wadhwa) also. Can you tell us something about yourself and your parents? I am from Mumbai and I am thirteen years old. My dad is a professional photographer and mom is a house wife.

He is only thirteen, but is known to all as the elegant and tough to-be king of an empire. Rushiraj Pawar, popularly known as Chandragupta Maurya, is the latest addition to list of child actors in the television industry. This boy who is now in Imagine’s new mythic show opens up his heart in a candid chat with Telly Buzz...

The boy speaks...

21a

Were your parents reluctant of you getting into acting?

How much are you involved in the stunts of Maurya? Did you do all by yourself or have you taken body double? Though I perform all the sword fights all by myself, I used to have a body double for the stunts which require high jumps off the cliff and such. Did you do a background study of the character? Not really. But for the auditions, I was told about how Chandragupta Maurya was and how he was as a student. I was also narrated the character Chanakya and how powerful a person he was. What was the most difficult scene that you performed? There was a scene where I have been chased by dogs. The scene was really difficult because the dogs were as huge as me and I had to run from them. The show has been doing well in spite of being in the cricket season, how do you feel? I would like to thank everyone for making the show a successful one. But also I would like to say that there is more to present and show to the people. We will put more of our efforts to make you entertain more. Who is your best friend on the sets? All are my good friends and I am really close to Chanakya

Not at all. In fact, they were really supportive and they are looking after me during my shoot. I am really obliged to them and I consider myself lucky because there are a lot of people who have talent but their parents do not allow. Did you always wanted to become an actor? Yeah Were you into acting before you got Chandragupta Maurya? I used to participate in school skits and plays and I received first place for Mono Act in Mumbai. What are your other interests? I like playing Basket Ball, Cricket etc. Kids, when gain popularity, have the tendency to fly high, what is your policy to stay grounded? I am very simple and do not throw attitude at all. You can ask the production people. And I know that the character Chanakya is more important than me in the show What do you aspire to become? I always wanted to become an actor. At the same time I have no aspirations to become a superstar, but a good actor. How do you manage work with studies?

He’s taking home a whopping Rs 2 crores per episode of ‘Just Dance’

I used to manage it well with time and the school authorities support me a lot in this. Now I have a vacation and hence it is not an issue at present.

J

ust like his movie debut, Hrithik Roshan’s TV debut has been rocking. HR recently agreed to be a judge on ‘Just Dance’, which will air on Star Plus’, and the buzz is that he’s got the biggest paycheque ever for a B’wood star on TV. The staggering amount he takes home is said to be Rs 2 crores per episode! Hrithik’s recent movies haven’t done well - both ‘Kites’ and ‘Guzaarish’ tanked at the box office - but looks like that hasn’t affected his price at all. Rumour is that not even Salman Khan made as much on Colors’ ‘Bigg Boss’ as Hrithik is being paid for ‘Just Dance’. It seems Salman was paid Rs 2.5 crores for 2 episodes, both of which were shot over weekends. Well, Hrihik is considered the best dancer in B’wood, and the fact that he was going to judge a dance-based reality show definitely adds value to it. Looking forward to HR’s moves on it!

this and you’re not a wine connoisseur, chances are Ifyouryou’rebrainreading can’t tell whether a wine is expensive or not. A recent U.K. study found that people distinguished between cheap and expensive white wines only 53% of the time, and 47% of the time for red wines. Hundreds of drinkers took part and commented on a variety of red and white wines, ranging from a £3.49 ($5.68) bottle of Claret to a £29.99 ($48.79) bottle of Champagne. “When you know the answer, you fool yourself into thinking you would be able to tell the difference, but most people simply can’t,” according to Richard Wiseman, a psychologist at Hertfordshire University. Wiseman carried out the study with attendees at the Edinburgh International Science Festival. The fact that price has an incredible effect on our taste buds has been proven in previous experiments. Brian Dimarco, a wine distributor, presented participants with two brown bags, each containing the exact same wine. They were told that one bottle was worth $50 and the other was a $10 bottle. In fact, both bottles were worth $10 at any retail store, but everyone preferred the $50 bottle. Two or three people asked whether they were the same wines, “but the more they thought about it, the more they intellectualized it,” Dimarco told Freakonomics. Quite reasonably, when people think a wine is more expensive, they assume it’s going to taste better. But it turns out only experts can tell the difference. Wine expert’s paper with over 6,000 blind tastings found that only individuals with wine training could establish a relationship between price and enjoyment. The rest, he found, did not appreciate more expensive wines and in fact tended to prefer the cheaper counterparts. So if you’re not a wine-savvy, you’re probably better off sticking to the cheaper wines and doing your pocket a favor. www.indian-times.com.au

Shahid refuses 15 crores to dance for billionaire Mittals

S

hahid Kapoor turns down big money to dance at a private function in London for the Mittals Shahid Kapoor has turned down a princely sum of Rs15 crore to dance at a private birthday party in London for steel billionaire Lakshmi Niwas Mittal’s wife Usha. Says a source, “The Mittals only wanted Shasha as the family is a fan of the Chance Pe Dance star. They offered a whopping amount that Kapoor refused without a moment’s hesitation.” The offer came through the Morani Brothers Karim and Ali who manage Shasha’s events. They tried their darndest to convince the actor to change his mind. Says the source, “It’s a known fact that unlike other big stars, Shahid doesn’t dance for private functions. People close to him advised him to

treat this as a special case. But he didn’t budge.” Shahid refrained from comment. The Moranis, too, chose to remain silent.

Preeti Desai’s fake topless pictures hits internet

nternet is flooded with the morphed pictures of numerous renowned Bollywood actresses, including Aishwarya Rai, Katrina Kaif, Preity Zinta, and Mallika Sherawat, to name a few. Few months ago, fake pictures of Sonakshi Sinha and Vidya Balan were available online on the cover page of ‘Maxim’. And now, the target is the ‘Shor in the City’ actress Preeti Desai, who’s allegedly dating the ‘Dev D’ actor Abhay Deol. Of late, many pictures of Preeti Desai in the dare-bare act with different poses were revealed online. However, the actress strictly rebuffed the reports and claimed that she has never posed in such outfits. Piggy Chops escapes fire accident B

Bollywood’s hot damsel Priyanka Chopra has recently escaped from a fire mishap during the shooting of Karan Johar’s ‘Agneepath’, in which she stars opposite her ‘Krrish’ co-star Hrithik Roshan. Scuttlebutt has it that the two were shooting for a religious sequence amid thousands of lit diyas, when Priyanka’s lehenga caught fire, but luckily she escaped unhurt. Confirming the incidence, a production source said that a Ganpati puja scene was being shot, when both the actors had to experience some fearful moments. In a conversation with the Mid Day, an insider said, “Her lehenga caught fire from the diyas of aarti and got burnt at the edges. She noticed it quickly and wasn’t hurt, but had to change her lehenga and wear a new one.” Hrithik injures his hand It was reported that even the ‘Just Dance’ judge injured his hand while rotating thalis, during the puja scene. “During one rotation, one diya (lamp) toppled over, spilling hot oil on

Luv and Gollu like to keep Timmy around because they feel one need a beefier, “adult” guy in the group to inspire respect and spread fear. Vidya Balan in bolder avatar in ‘Dirty Picture’ Get Special Winter Discount

B

ollywood actress Vidya Balan says the audience will see her in a “bolder avatar” in the upcoming movie “Dirty Picture”.

“It doesn’t get bolder than this,” said Vidya. The movie is based on the life of Silk Smitha, one of the most popular sex sirens of the mid eighties in the South Indian film industry. She was known for her bold roles and skimpy outfits. The shooting of the film is set to start soon. Riding high on the success of her last film “No One Killed Jessica”, Vidya feels playing Silk Smitha on screen is very interesting as there are no similarities between the two women. “I have to work hard to portray the character of Silk Smitha because there is no similarity between us. It is really interesting that you play a character, which is totally different from you. I am very excited,” Vidya told reporters Wednesday on the sidelines of the launch of a book penned by film producer Pritish Nandy. “Dirty Picture” will also have Nasseeruddin Shah sharing screen space opposite Vidya. The two had been paired opposite each other in “Ishqiya”.

Deepika is not beautiful enough for Rajnikanth

I am not inviting anyone for my wedding: Kalki Koechlin F

nhappy with her look for Rana, Rajnikanth asks for a ‘more beautiful’ Deepika Padukone It’s Rajnikanth’s way or the highway. We just couldn’t resist the cheesiness of that statement but it’s true. The Boss has delayed the shoot of Rana, his film with Deepika, by a week. Unhappy with her look test, Rajni has asked the makers to take some more time to work out a better look. The film will therefore be behind schedule by a week. A source reveals, “The first schedule was to begin in Chennai. However, Rajni told director K S Ravikumar that he felt Dippy needed

to look simple, yet traditionally beautiful, and that wasn’t coming across.” It’s different The source adds, “It’s a very different film that spans three different time periods. Rajni plays a multi-generational triple role and Deepika is paired opposite him in his youth. Rajni has now asked the make-up team to go back to the drawing board and devise a new look, sending the entire schedule into a tizzy.” Only after Rajnikanth okays Deepika’s look, will the shoot commence.

ilmmaker Anurag Kashyap weds his live-in girlfriend of two years Kalki Koechlin The couple, engaged this January, are definitely not tying the knot in Mumbai but may solemnise their bond, either in Benares (Kashyap’s hometown) or in Pondicherry (Kalki’s hometown). Says a source, “Anurag and Kalki are in love and want to get married. Their parents have fixed April 30 as an auspicious date. The couple wants a quiet family affair with a simple wedding ceremony away from the media hype and so, haven’t informed anyone. Yesterday evening, he was to go for a trial of Amole Gupte’s Stanley Ka Dabba as both have been good friends for many years but Kashyap cancelled at last minute saying he had to attend fittings for his wedding sherwani.” An extremely private person, the Dev D director didn’t want anyone to get wind of the wedding. Shocked, he nevertheless, confirms, “Yes, I am getting married soon and have taken leave from all my commitments for 10 days. Our wedding is a personal affair and will be attended by only family and very close friends. I am leaving tomorrow and that’s why I am in a hurry to get my wedding outfits done. It will be a simple ceremony without any grand show-sha.” The couple admitted to their engagement only recently but insisted that they were caught up with work and hadn’t fixed a date. Kalki met her to-be in-laws in Benares during the shoot of Anurag’s forthcoming directorial, Gangs Of Wasseypur. Anurag met Kalki on the sets of Dev D. He was earlier married to film editor Aarti Bajaj and they have a daughter Aaliya.

Abhishek’s death in Dum Maaro Dum turns lucky? he should have any issues. He had seen the film several times. He saw the edits and the final copy.” He added, “I stand by the ending and if anyone who feels that by keeping AB alive in the film we would have done better business, they should know that Game (where he doesn’t die) collected Rs 4.5 crore overall and we have collected Rs 16.5 crore in three days.” So is that Abhishek Bachchan’s death as ACP Vishnu Kamath in Dum Maaro Dum, has cashed in money for the makers?

R

eportedly, Abhishek Bachchan is upset with his character’s death in Dum Maaro Dum. Apparently, he conveyed this to director Rohan Sippy, who strongly believed in the film’s climax. The film went ahead as the director wanted. Sippy convinced the actor to go with the

original idea, however the idea failed to lure Junior Bachchan after he saw the final edit of the film. Meanwhile, Sippy assures Mid Day that all is well between him and Abhishek, “Abhishek hasn’t told me that he is upset with the ending of the film. I don’t think

While shooting Dilli 6, Abhishek had a similar kind of problem with the script, which showed him dying in the film. On the actor’s insistence the script was altered and his character was kept alive, however the film crashed big time at the Box Office. It should also be noted that originally the cop’s role was not written for Abhishek. He swapped his role with Rana Daggubatti, who played the role of the local DJ in Dum Maaro Dum.

Narmada Ahuja Veteran Bollywood actor Govinda’s daughter Narmmadaa Ahuja has supposedly signed three movies at a time. She is yet to debut in the industry and there is a buzz that she has bagged two more movies apart from her debut one. Speaking to the media, the budding star kid said that among these three movies, two will be released in 2011 and the third movie will hit the theaters in 2012.

atrina Kaif is “trying her best” to outdo her last item number. This one won’t be he remake of a classic. Will it hit the bullseye, even so? Sheila Ki Jawani is passe. Katrina Kaif is reinventing herself for an item number for Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Picture if you will, something of the ilk of Madhuri Dixit’s Ek Do Teen from Tezaab. Now think of Kat in a similar tapori-type track, drawing ceetees from the front-benchers. Says Katrina, “Yes, I am shooting a full-on tapori number. It’s earthy and sensuous not suggestive. I’m supposed to be dancing at a roadside dhaba.” So what happens to Sheila? Katrina shrugs, “That’s become the new benchmark for all my dance numbers. I was told to better Sheila Ki Jawani. And I’m trying my best.” The actress is quietly shooting for the item number at Yash Raj Studios. Onlookers say she’s sporting a hot new look. Sohail Sen has composed the music. The brief that producer Aditya Chopra gave him was simple: Keep it original. Go “beyond Sheila”. Says a source, “It isn’t so much about one-upmanship over Kat’s last calling card as much as it is to

alman Khan to play a spy with super powers in Kabir Khan film. Is he trying to get one-up on his rival, Shah Rukh Khan? Buzz is that Salman Khan will be playing a spy agent with super powers in Kabir Khan’s next. For weeks, there has been speculation surrounding the nature of his role in the film. While producers Yash Raj maintains that the cast isn’t in

place, a source reveals that Sallu’s character is a spy agent with the ability to do superhuman things. Interesting, given that his foe Shah Rukh Khan is playing a super hero in his next Ra.One Apparently, Khan is looking for fresher roles. When Kabir’s film came to him, he was excited because of the superhero angle. A source close to the actor reveals, “The film will be shot all around the world at different locations. It’s an espionage thriller on the lines of X-Men where Salman plays an undercover officer as a spy who also has super abilities that are hidden from others. The film will have a lot of special effects.” At the moment Kabir and Salman are having several meetings regarding the look and nature of this particular character. Kabir Khan refused to confirm on the nature of Salman’s role but cheekily said, “Salman is always a superhero!” While the Yashraj spokesperson maintained, “the cast is not final yet. Immoral? Poonam doesn’t care W inning is one thing. Losing your clothes for a win, another. At the time we went to press, the results of the IndiaPakistan World Cup semi-final may’ve been uncertain, but what was certain was that the moral brigade was livid about model Poonam Pandey’s announcement that she’d run through the stadi The 20 year-old said she first intended to go naked for fans in the stadium, and then in the dressing room, in front of the Indian team. “Showing happiness through nudity is against Indian values. I must congratulate her that she feels happy enough to do so, but there are other ways to show happiness,” says Vinod Bansal of Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

“We are totally against such vulgarity and obscenity,” fumes Shalini Thackeray of the right wing Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. Shiv Sena says it will handle things ‘their way’ if the government doesn’t step in to stop such gimmicks. Poonam Pandey“This is against public morality. It is an offence. The government should make sure such acts should stop. If they do not handle it, we will,” says the outfit’s Rahul Navrekar. Pandey is unfazed. “I don’t care if people have a problem. I am one of the most downloaded models online. I don’t need to do this for publicity. I am doing what I want to do,” she says.

She asked me if she could participate. I happily agreed. She’s an intelligent girl. I know she’ll conduct herself well.” Sinha Sr admits he needs to work on his Bhojpuri. “That’s strange because my mother spoke to us in the dialect. I’m brushing it up for KBC. It isn’t difficult. Bhojpuri has direct links with Hindi. So mastering it is no problem.” Shatru’s first guest is politician Yashwant Sinha. “Sonakshi will follow. From the film industry I’ll also invite Salman Khan to be on the hotseat, “ he says. Amitabh Bachchan might also feature on the show. “Having him on my show makes perfect sense. I’ll invite him personally. I am sure he will agree. The differences between us is a thing of the past.” Adds Sonakshi excitedly, “It will be great! I love the show. Although I don’t speak Bhojpuri I can understand it. It would fun to be quizzed by dad.” Incidentally, a movie with the baapbeti is also in the works.

Says a source close to the actor, “Though he had pressing commitments in Mumbai, Ranbir stayed back in Delhi during a recent visit so he could spend time with his month-old niece. He spent the whole day playing with her and taking many pictures on his cell phone. He misses her a lot and just needs an excuse to fly to Delhi to be with her.” The tot was named so because of an old promise the siblings made years ago.

Younger days When the two were studying, they loved the name as Riddhima knew a girl named that. They decided then and there that if Riddhima ever had a baby girl, she would name her Samara. By the time the baby was born, Riddhima had forgotten the episode. RK reminded her.”

Kim Kardashian strips to underwear

‘Paris is horrible excuse for a human being’ American actress Sarah Shahi has in a tweet called socialite Paris Hilton a horrible excuse for a human being. Shahi, 31, wrote the profanitylaced tweet after Hilton, 30, apparently failed to watch the road as she was driving. “Worst driver ever. Almost hit me, then ran a stop sign. What if there was a kid around the corner, you dumb b----,” People magazine quoted Shahi as tweeting.

ith her hair done into a big tumbling 1960s style and sporting platform heels, the curvy reality

starlet looked absolutely stunning. A picture for the magazine shows Kardashian lying on a white couch, wearing a black top and a pair of knickers while other shots show her pouting in a series of low-cut tops. Kardashian, 30, certainly seemed pleased with the results as she has posted on her website “this was such a fun and sexy shoot and I love the way the photos turned out.”

Shahi then called Hilton a “blonde piece of sh--”, and said that she should “apologize to humanity”. “Horrible excuse for a human being,” Shahi wrote.

India should field full-strength side against West Indies: Lorgat

Dhoni played innings of his life in World Cup final: Yuvraj M

N

International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Haroon Lorgat

ew Delhi: International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Haroon Lorgat said they are looking forward to a full-stength Indian side on the West Indies tour as per the commitment to the Futute Tours Programme. Lorgat was commenting on media reports that top Indian cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, skipper M.S. Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and Gautam Gambhir have asked to be rested for the One-day series that will precede the Tests. “I think it affects the brand of cricket. Everybody want to see a fullstrength side. The same applies to the IPL and any of the FTP commitments. Because of the volume of cricket, every individual player has to be managed. “One or two stars asking for a rest is okay. If five or six stars do not want to go to the West Indies, then I think, it’s not appropriate fulfillment of what has been committed to the FTP,” said Lorgat during a TV news show. India will play a T20 International in Trinidad June 4, five One-dayers and three Tests. The Indian team is playing non-stop for sometime now and only got six days rest after the World Cup before the Indian Premier league began.

umbai: Cricket World Cup’s “Man of the Tournament” Yuvraj Singh on Tuesday complimented Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for his match-winning innings of 91 not out in the final of the mega event on April 2, terming it as the latter’s best-ever knock. “It was a dream come true. As MS (Dhoni) said (earlier) I did not know what to do. I wanted to jump on MS and keep jumping on him. He had just played the innings of his life,” the flamboyant batsman said here about the Indian skipper’s masterly innings, in the latter’s presence. The Ranchi-born wicketkeeperbatsman had promoted himself to number 5 above in-form Yuvraj and simply took away the game from Sri Lanka by slamming two sixes and eight fours in his 79-ball masterpiece at the Wankhede Stadium. Dhoni, only the second captain after Kapil Dev to lead India to the game’s showpiece trophy, put on 109 runs for the fourth wicket with Gautam Gambhir (97) and an unbeaten 5th stand of 46 with Yuvraj, who remained unbeaten on 21. “It was the highlight of my career. To win the World Cup after 28 years, was very special. Can’t explain the feelings,” said Yuvraj who scored 362 runs in 9 matches averaging 90-plus and also grabbed 15 wickets with his left arm slow bowling. Dhoni, for his part, conceded he had gone blank after hitting the winning shot, a six. “I was quite blank at that point of time. I didn’t know how to celebrate. Then I saw Yuvraj’s 6-foot, 2-inch coming towards me. I thought, he’s not going anywhere; let me get to the stumps first,” said Dhoni at the event organised by Reebok to felicitate the triumphant team members.

Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj said he worked hard to make a memorable comeback into the Indian squad after being dropped from both the Test and ODI teams last year. “Last year was not a great one. I suffered a lot of injuries, but I received a lot of support from my teammates and people close to me. I kept on working hard and performed at the right time,” he said. Dhoni also talked about the importance of fielding and fitness. “Of course we have to put in a 100

per cent effort (to keep fit). Fielding is an integral part. Twenty overs (games) are said to be demanding but in 50 overs (games) you have to maintain intensity throughout,” he said. Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh said for him the team always came first. “Whenever there is a time to celebrate I celebrate. That’s the way I have always been. I am there always for the team, the team comes first,” he said.

Money did not influence Test retirement: Malinga

Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga

Colombo: Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga rubbished suggestions that he retired from Test cricket to able to earn some quick money by playing in cashawash tournaments such as Indian Premier League. Malinga chose to skip the Test series against England, citing a knee injury, but continued to play in the IPL. He then quit Test cricket after being asked by the Sri Lanka Cricket to return home for a rehabilitation

programme instead of continuing playing for his IPL side Mumbai Indians. “The Test retirement was never about money. I can’t be a commentator, coach or umpire. But I can bowl well and get wickets. It’s unfair to say money was the root cause of my decision,” Malinga, the highest wicket-taker so far in the IPL with 16 wickets, told reporters. Malinga is hoping that his decision will help him extend his international

career. “My right knee is getting weaker each day. I have a longstanding degenerative condition that I need to carefully manage. I love playing for Sri Lanka. It’s my dream to play for my country. I’m not sure if my knee will inflame again.” Malinga has expressed desire to play the ODIs and Twenty20s against England. The tour is starting next month.

Saina needs to be faster on court: Peter Gade NEW DELHI: World number six Dane Peter Hoeg Gade has no doubt that ace shuttler Saina Nehwal is one of the most talented players in international circuit but said the Indian needs to move faster on court if she wants to beat the Chinese players consistently and rule the game. The 1999 All England Open Champion feels Saina will definitely start as one of the favourites in the Indian Open Super Series but said she will have to deal with the constant pressure which is being created by the media. “Tine (Baun) and Saina are the favourites but Saina has got the home advantage but it is not always an advantage. She won the Commonwealth Games here but it is tough on her nerves. Media puts pressure on her. She is mentally tough and if she can keep improving in different areas of the game, she can be the best,” Peter told reporters. May 2011 Edition

Indian GP organisers promise glitch-free race

Greater Noida: With the reputation of their brand at stake, the organisers of the inaugural Indian Grand Prix on Monday promised to deliver a successful race, saying they won’t face any sort of embarrassment like the organisers of the Commonwealth Games. The organisers - Jaypee Sports International - asserted that the track was almost ready and only the finishing touches are being given. Jaypee is one of India’s leading players in the field of real estate. Ecclestone hints at exit if Murdoch snags Formula One: Report They also unveiled the logo of the Buddh International circuit, which will host the race on October 30 this year. The logo consists of a stylised ‘B’, resembling a heart in saffron and green colour. Asked how prepared they are with the race just six months away, Manoj Gaur, executive chairman of the Jaiprakash Associcates, came up with a confident reply. “Be assured my friends. Our and country’s reputation is there. We are responsible people. The track is ready and the homologation of the facility will be done in July as per the time-table of the FIA,” Manoj said when reminded of the troubled run-up to last year’s Commonwealth Games. Armaan Ebrahim among points at Silverstone When Manoj said that “400 million dollars or 1700 crore rupees are being invested in the project” he was asked about the revenue plans. He replied, “Somebody had to come up with that size of investment. And it’s a privilege to do something for India. Before the champions are born, we have to give them the infrastructure. “We are not owners of a team but we have passion. Maybe in five years we will see an Indian team winning and that will be the biggest satisfaction.” They also said that races like Moto GP and other motorsport events will be held at the circuit for better utilisation. Samir Gaur, managing director of the JPSI, said the tickets for the Indian GP would be launched in June. “We can’t disclose the pricing but it would be moderate. It is in the final stages and it will start from Rs 2500 onwards. We have tied up with the bookmyshow.com for the ticketing,” Samir said. “We are looking at the model of Abu Dhabi and Bahrain and not Singapore since it’s street circuit,” Samir said hinting that the Grand Stand tickets would cost not less than Rs 35,000. The organisers did not talk about the title sponsors for the race, saying Bernie Ecclestone, the F1 boss, has the final say on the matter. www.indian-times.com.au

PERFECT ANSWER TO WEIGHT LOSS:

AYURVEDA

Dr. C.R.S. Kumar What is Ayurveda? yurveda is an intricate system of healing that originated in India A thousands of years ago. We can find

historical evidence of Ayurveda in the ancient books of wisdom known as the Vedas. In the Rig Veda, over 60 preparations were mentioned that could be used to assist an individual in overcoming various ailments. The Rig Veda was written over 6,000 years ago, but really Ayurveda has been around even longer than that. What we see is that Ayurveda is more than just a medical system. It is a Science of Life. We are all part and parcel of nature. Just as the animals and plants live in harmony with nature and utilize the Laws of Nature to create health and balance within their beings, we, too, adhere to these very same principles. Therefore, it is fair to say that Ayurveda is a system that helps maintain health in a person by using the inherent principles of nature to bring the individual backs into equilibrium with their true self. In essence Ayurveda has been in existence since the beginning of time because we have always been governed by nature’s laws. What is Overweight or Obesity? Overweight and obesity is measured at the population level for adults using the Body Mass Index (BMI) which is calculated by dividing

weight in kilograms by height in meters squared. For example, a woman 1.67m in height and weighing 65kg would have a BMI of 23.3 which falls within the healthy weight range. Overweight is measured at a BMI of 25 or more with obesity determined at a BMI of 30 or more. These cutoff points are based on associations between and chronic disease and mortality and have been adopted for use internationally by the World Health Organization. In Ayurvedic text ‘charakacharya’ has described eight ‘nindya prakruties’ (undesirable constitution) according to the body constitution. Among them he has also mentioned obesity. Obesity is described as ‘medoroga’ in Ayurveda. It is said that it is comparatively easy to help an underweight person, rather than an overweight person. The overweight problem can be due to an actual increase in the fat component (medo dhatu), or it can be due to malfunctioning. These, accordingly, will need different approaches. In very few cases it can be an offshoot of other metabolic disorders. Body is made of 7- dhatus {rasa (lymph), rakta (blood), maans , meda( fat), asthi (bones), majja (nervous system) shukra (reproductive system)}. But in obese fellow meda is excessively nourished and remaining other dhatus get malnourished. Kapha gets accumulated in between. When kapha increases in abnormal fashion, fat metabolism gets hampered and person becomes obese.

Roll of medicines with dietary correction is to remove obstructed kapha and let all Dhatus (Tissues) nourish equally. It is not only the quantity of food that is important, but also the type of food one eats. It is not always necessary to go on a restricted diet, but qualitative changes and food habits can bring remarkable changes. Ayurvedic dietary changes and life style recommendations are important to bring the balance in the weight among the obese or overweight individuals. Look for AAA registered Ayurvedic Practitioner for a professional help. You may ask your personal query to Dr Kumar via Email drkumar@ jeevahealth.com.au or by phone 0402 282 745 regarding any of your health problems. Meditation and Mind

What is meditation? - Keeping the mind calm and quiet is Meditation. This state of mind is neither reacting to the memories of the past or is preoccupied with the plans of the future. These are the two main sources of the chronic stress. When they are removed, balance of physical, psychological and emotional states can be achieved. According to Dr. Joan Borysenko, a pioneer in the field of mind/body medicine, in her Beginner’s Guide to Meditation, meditation means being ‘pleasantly anchored in the present moment’. Meditation is mind body exercise. There are many types of meditations most of which

May 2011 Edition

originate from ancient spiritual and religious traditions. It is done for several purposes such as to increase physical relaxation, to achieve calmness of mind, to enhance health or to treat certain diseases. Meditation is a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the reflexive, “thinking” mind into a deeper state of relaxation or awareness. Different meditative disciplines encompass a wide range of spiritual or psychophysical practices that may emphasize different goals—from achievement of a higher state of consciousness, to greater focus, creativity or self-awareness, or simply a more relaxed and peaceful frame of mind.

Study on Hypertension A

n encouraging drop in the number of deaths among Americans with high blood pressure has been documented by researchers, who warn however, that the number is still comparatively high. Researcher Earl S. Ford, MD, MPH, medical officer with the U.S. Public Health Service at the CDC, in a news release reported that although several types of medications are available, there exists a considerable difference between those who suffer from high blood pressure and those without. Two national health surveys yielded data for analysis in the study. The first had 11,000 people

involved in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES I) between 1971 and 1975. The second, NHANES III between 1988 and 1994, had information of 12,500 people. Examining the data, the researchers concluded that 30 per cent of adult Americans suffer from hypertension, the silent killer, which poses the increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney problems. When the information was further scrutinized, Ford concluded that the overall death rate for NHANES I participants with high blood pressure was 42% higher compared to adults with normal

blood pressure. The death rate fell from 18.8 deaths per 1,000 people with high blood pressure per year among NHANES I participants to 14.3 per 1,000 people with hypertension per year among NHANES III participants.Interestingly, in both the surveys, the death rate among AfricanAmericans with high blood pressure was higher than that among whites. The decline in deaths among men with high blood pressure was more than four times larger than those seen in women with high blood pressure. “Compared with hypertensive men, women gained more weight, were more likely to

New Invention Could Help Diagnose Painful Eye Condition

R

ice University bioengineering students have developed a portable unit that controls the air around a patient’s eyes so doctors can study and treat those who suffer from this painful condition. Stephen Pflugfelder, the James and Margaret Elkins Chair and professor of ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine’s Cullen Eye Institute, approached Rice to invent a device to help clinicians standardize a testing regime for dry eye.”He wanted a way to control temperature, humidity and air flow all around the eyes and record it over time so he could track changes in their dryness,” said Daniel Hays, a member of Team ClimaTears, the student group that included Austin Edwards, Amanda Shih, Anastasia Alex and Michelle Kerkstra. The students’ solution

May 2011 Edition

incorporates a modified and padded set of laboratory goggles with embedded data sensors that monitor temperature, relative humidity, air flow and blink rate over an hour and a half. A cable carries data saved every 10 seconds to a small box that includes controls and conditioning equipment. A separate hose carries air to the goggles. The goggles keep the humidity of air around the eyes between 40 and 15 percent -- “about as low as we can go without hurting patients,” Alex said. “We’re exacerbating the symptoms so doctors can see them,” Hays explained. Normal patients will produce tears, he said, but those who suffer dry eye will exhibit symptoms, which will give clues about how to treat them. Follow-up sessions with the goggles will let doctors see how

well the treatment is working.”With this, we’re putting the power in the hands of clinicians, which is very appealing to them,” Shih said. “We did a lot of research on the ocular test they currently perform to help us analyze the data we collected,” Alex said. “We know there’s still a lot to be done.” “We hope our device will create a gold standard for diagnosis,” Kerkstra said. The team and Pflugfelder spent two weeks this spring testing patients at the Alkek Eye Center in Houston and will continue this summer. The students hope the larger trial will lead to an academic paper -- a fine reward for spending nearly 2,000 hours developing the goggles over the course of their final year at Rice. Their work has already paid dividends. The students won the grand prize, $1,500, in the second annual Rice Alliance-George R. Brown School of Engineering Senior Design Elevator Pitch Competition last November, and more recently $500 for the Best Health-Related Engineering Design Project at the School of Engineering Design Showcase held April 14. The team’s faculty advisers were Renata Ramos, a Rice lecturer in bioengineering, and Maria Oden, professor in the practice of engineering education and director of Rice’s Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen, where the goggles were developed.

be diagnosed with diabetes, and were less likely to quit smoking,” reported Ford. He recommends more focus on reducing mortality among hypertensive women. Dr. Donald LaVan, American Heart Association spokesman and clinical associate professor of medicine at University of Pennsylvania says, “The bottom line on this is, don’t fool around with high blood pressure. You’ve got to get your weight under control. Restrict sodium intake. Exercise. And you’ve got to take your medicine. It actually pays off. There is no question about it.”

Doctors may Lose Their License If They Conduct Sex Selection Tests

In a strict move to curb the practice of sex selection tests, Doctors caught conducting the same will forfeit their Medical Council of India license to practice. The Union Health Ministry may soon direct State MCI boards to name the doctors who have been convicted earlier and ensure that their license to practice is cancelled permanently.A directive has also been issued to keep a vigil on the number of ultrasound machines in districts including details of ultrasound clinics/imaging centres. It is now mandatory to fill Form F , which will soon be available online. The radiologist in the ultrasound clinics will need to fill up Form F before conducting ultrasound on the pregnant woman with details of the patient and doctor as well as the reason for conducting sonography.

One of the vitamins that our children get for free is Vitamin D: due to sunlight.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is the only freely available vitamin on earth, in the sense that it is naturally available via sunlight. It is primarily in the form of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) which is human synthesized from sunlight and D2 (ergocalciferol) which is plant synthesized. It is naturally present in very few foods, added to others (fortified) and available as a dietary supplement. It is primarily produced endogenously when ultraviolet rays (specifically Type B) from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. USES OF VITAMIN D: Children should be given a regular and natural supply of Vitamin C.Vitamin D is essential for promoting calcium absorption in the gut and maintaining adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations to enable normal mineralization of bone. It is also required to absorb other minerals and also Vitamin A. Sufficient Vitamin D is necessary for good kidney function. It is also needed for bone formation, healthy bones and teeth, growth and the formation of an intact and strong skeleton.

VITAMIN D

- Homeopathic Help

It is necessary for modulation of neuromuscular and immune function, reduction of inflammation, cell proliferation and differentiation. Along with calcium, vitamin D also helps protect from osteoporosis when our children turn into adults. Vitamin D plays a role in the prevention of a variety of cancers (such as colon, prostate, and breast). It plays an important role in the maintenance of organ systems. It also helps prevent a growing list of chronic diseases, including type 2-diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, osteoporosis, ovarian cancer etc.

(due to a reduced ability to absorb dietary fat, Vitamin D (fat soluble vitamin) cannot be synthesised properly). 5. Children who are obese (due to improper distribution). 6. Excess sun screen usage may block proper sunlight absorption. VITAMIN D FROM SUNLIGHT:

VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY: Vitamin D deficiency can lead to thin, brittle or misshapen bones. Vitamin D deficiency causes rickets in children, a disease characterized by a failure of bone tissue to properly mineralize, resulting in soft bones and skeletal deformities. It results in impaired bone mineralization, lower bone density and higher risk of fractures. Vitamin D deficiency inhibits proper calcium absorption. That is when we hear young children complain of bone pain and muscle and bone weakness.

to-eat breakfast cereals, some brands of milk often contain added (fortified) vitamin D, as do some brands of orange juice, yogurt, and margarine. Children who may be subject to limited sun exposure for various reasons, need to include good sources of vitamin D in their diet or take a supplement.

It may also result in kidney problems and also mal absorption of other essential vitamins and minerals.

1. Breastfed infants (Vitamin D requirements cannot be met by human milk alone).

VITAMIN D SOURCES: Fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel and fish liver oils are among the best sources. Small amounts of vitamin D are found in beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks. Some mushrooms also contain vitamin D2. Very few foods in nature contain vitamin D. Ready-

HIGH RISK GROUPS: Some children are at high risk of having Vitamin D Deficiency. To name a few are

2. Children with limited sun exposure (due to various disabilities, religious, cultural, health or family reasons). 3. Children with dark skin (greater amounts of melanin reduces the skin’s ability to produce Vitamin D). 4. Children with fat mal absorption problems

Despite the importance of the sun to vitamin D synthesis, it is vital to limit exposure of skin to sunlight. The sun is a potential source of vitamin D, but it is sense to keep out of direct sunlight wear protective clothing and sunscreen. Early morning or late evening sun exposure and outdoor play in moderation are the best methods and also help achieve a healthy life style. For any other underlying ailments, always seek medical help. Remember, in every ‘body’ there is a built in doctor, developed over 40 million years of evolution. Natural therapies like Homeopathy simply kick this existing doctor into action. • You may ask your personal query to Raj Kothuru (Homeopath) via email drraj@aurahealth.com.au or phone 0425 761 826 / (03) 9044 5077 regarding any of your health problems.
