India slips to 5th position from Obama bored with BlackBerry! 3rd in global steel output Washington: Barack Obama fought hard to keep his BlackBerry when he became the US President, but with only 10 people authorised to email the super-encrypted device, he admitted today that it is “no fun.” Obama also demonstrated a passing knowledge of popular culture, in the first-ever appearance by a sitting president on a daytime television talk show, as he increases campaign-style events ahead of November’s congressional polls. The US President said that only 10 people have the address of the BlackBerry he was issued, and the conversation is a bit stilted because messages will likely be archived along with all other White House documents. “I’ve got to admit, it’s no fun because they think that it’s probably going to be subject to the presidential records act, so nobody wants to send me the real juicy stuff,” Obama said on a TV show. “It’s all very official. ‘Mr. President, you have a meeting coming up and we’d like to brief you,’” he added. Obama, however, was happy to reveal the contents of his iPod, which tears down musical barriers, including Jay-Z, Frank Sinatra and opera legend Maria Callas. Obama said he had no tracks by teen heartthrob Justin Bieber, but did once meet the singer when he performed at the White House.

ndia has slipped to the fifth position in terms of global steel production with a 32.5 million tonnes output in the first six months of this year, Lok Sabha was informed. In 2009, the country occupied the third rank in global steel production with 62.8 million tonnes (MT) output whereas China topped the list with 567.8 MT. Japan secured the second place with 87.5 MT production, as per the World Steel Association (WSA). “As per provisional data released by WSA, India is the fifth largest producer of crude steel during January-June 2010,” Minister of State for Steel A Sai Prathap told the Lower House replying to a query that whether India’s steel production has come down. China with 323 MT production during January-June period continued to occupy the top slot of global steel producers, followed by Japan recording 54.6 MT, Prathap said. The US and Russia superceded India during the first half of the year occupying third and fourth positions with 41 MT and 32.6 MT production, respectively during the first half of the year, he added. Prathap, however, said the government is encouraging steel production through sustainable promising measures. “As per the latest estimates, the crude steel capacity in the country is likely to reach 120 MT by 2012 from 72.9 MT in 2009-10,” the Minister said.

“Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) envisages increasing its crude steel production from existing 12.84 MT to 21.40 MT per annum in phase I to be completed by 2012-13 at an estimated cost of Rs 70,000 crore” The fall in the country’s output is said to be on account of a dip in demand and prices of steel in the wake of global economic crisis and a gloomy global steel scenario. Prathap said massive -- about Rs 98,000 crore -- capacity expansion programmes were on by domestic players like Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL). “SAIL envisages increasing its crude steel production from existing 12.84 MT to 21.40 MT per annum in phase I to be completed by 2012-13 at an estimated cost of Rs 70,000 crore,” he said. RINL is expanding its existing capacity of 2.9 MT of crude steel production to 6.3 MT per annum to be completed by December 2011 at an estimated cost of Rs 12,228 crore, he added. Another PSU NMDC plans to set up a 3 MT per annum integrated steel plant at Nagarnar, Chhattisgarh at an investment of Rs 15,525 crore, likely to be commissioned by 2014.

English test must for non-EU migrants to UK The English language test announced by the British government for all nonEuropean migrants applying to come to Britain to join or marry their settled partner will become compulsory from November 29 this year. The UK Border Agency (UKBA) Monday announced that from this date, any migrant who wants to enter or remain in the country as the partner of a British citizen or a person settled here will need to show that they can speak and understand English, by taking an English language test with one of the test providers approved by the agency. This means the applicants will have to demonstrate basic English at A1 level, the same level required for skilled workers admitted under Tier 2 of the points-based system. The test will be compulsory even for people applying from within Britain, UKBA said in a statement. The government announced the new stipulation last month. Partners who apply for settlement after completing their two-year period of temporary residence will still need to meet the “knowledge of language and life in the UK” test. This is in addition to the new basic English language requirement, which forms part of their initial application.

Canada-bound female spouses from India need counselling TORONTO: With rampant domestic violence, including honour killings, against women in Indian and other South Asian communities in Canada, a study here has recommended bold steps to confront the problem. These steps include counselling sessions by Canadian missions for women in their native India and Pakistan before they land in Canada after marriages. In her study titled “Culturally driven violence against women” among south Asians here, Indo-Canadian social activist Aruna Papp says the fast-growing community has the highest domestic violence in Canada. “Since 2002, the murders of 12 women were identified as honour killings; three other murders identified as domestic violence also have the hallmarks of an honour killing,” she says, giving examples of young Sikh and Muslim women killed by their fathers and brothers to protect ‘family honour’. Since spouses coming from India and Pakistan bear the brunt of domestic violence, Papp says these sponsored women should be provided mandatory counselling sessions in their country of origin before they land here. “The session would be administered and staffed by Canadian citizens. The goal of this training would be to educate women about their rights and Canadian culture and values,” she says in her recommendations. This training will educate women how to approach help centres in Canada in case they

are subjected to domestic violence. Papp has also recommended “mandatory orientation” for men in Canada sponsoring women to educate them about sponsorship rules and regulations. “Men, too, should be educated on the values and laws regarding gender equality.” With a record number of men and women entering into fake marriages to come to Canada, the study

has recommended that “cultural competency training for frontline personnel would ease the process for immigrants”. Papp has also urged the Canadian government to stamp out ‘ghost consultants’ in the South Asian community who run fake services for immigration, sponsorship and marriage. To draw attention of policy makers to the cases of honour killings, the report begins with the 1999 killing of five-year-

hanges in visa laws, coupled with a host of ‘racially-motivated’ acts of violence, appear to be the main concern for Indian students going to Australia. “In the last academic year itself, we saw an overall decline of more than 60 per cent in Indian students going to Australia. The market is going through a correction mode as there was an unrealistic and unsustainable increase in the number of students that went to countries such as Australia and New Zealand because of the permanent residence (PR) options available. Students keen on getting the PR only may change their plans,” says Naresh Gulati, CEO, Oceanic Consultants. Pranjal Kalita, Asst Manager-Marketing at IDP Education, concurs there are two kinds of students going abroad — those who are serious about education and those who prefer foreign countries for their livelihood and immigration purposes. While there has been an overall decline of 50 per cent in the students going to Australia this year due to its new skilled occupation list, “there has not been much decline in the number of students sincere about pursuing only education in that country”. Gulati points out that unscrupulous students are prepared to do anything to go overseas including using fraudulent means. They generally opt for courses and institutions that have a lower course fee and do not demand

Amit Menghani, president, Federation of Indian Students of Australia (FISA), agrees that the estimated enrollment of Indian students in Australia has dropped by 45 per cent this year. “Indian students are reluctant to consider Australia for private education after many fake colleges closed in Australia. In fact, many students are now planning to go back after the changes in the immigration and other policies,” he says. He, however, adds that “Indian students may choose other countries this year but opportunities might rise again in Australia depending upon the requirement of the students.” Meanwhile, Australia’s pain is US’ gain. For instance, according to Open Doors 2009 survey, the total number of Indian students studying in the US increased by nine per cent in 2008-2009 — from 94,563 to 103,260. This is the highest number ever for students from a foreign country studying in the US, with the number only set to rise this year. Indian students spend around $4 billion on higher studies abroad every year. They contributed around Rs 12,500 crore ($2.75 billion) to the US economy as tuition and living

expenses and every sixth international student enrolled in US higher education institutions is from India. Opportunities in M Phil programmes offered by the US and Canadian universities, for instance, are considered better than

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has expressed concern over the unrest in Kashmir, which exploded last month claiming the lives of seventeen people. “In relation to recent developments in Indianadministered Kashmir, the Secretary-General is concerned over the prevailing security situation there over the past month,” Farhan Haq, Mr. Ban’s spokesperson, said in a statement. “He calls on all concerned to exercise utmost restraint and address problems peacefully,” it added. Meanwhile, the Indian government said that it was aware of anti-India elements based in Pakistan provoking the people of Jammu and Kashmir with the support of certain sections of secessionist groups based in the state. Kashmir Valley has been wracked with demonstrations since June 11, which led to the police and military cracking down on protestors. Cameron to India

Open financial and retail sectors further E

yeing Indian markets to accelerate economic growth back home, British Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday pitched for further opening up of financial services and retail sectors by India, saying the move will benefit both the countries. “Just as we in Britain are a very open economy welcoming investment, you too in India as well. In banking, insurance and retail, there are further opportunities for openness that will benefit both the countries,” Mr.

Hits Kapil Dev for a six! British Prime Minister David Cameron (L) prepares to shake hands with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh after a joint news conference in New Delhi July 29, 2010. India welcomed a pledge by Britain to end “complacency” towards its former colony and forge a special relationship, which ministers said would translate in coming years into economic benefits for both.

Cameron, later said, it was a childhood dream come true. “ Thank you for letting me realise a childhood dream when I hit Kapil Dev for a six today, in the hockey stadium. But I do admit he was bowling a tennis ball at me rather than a cricket ball, which made my life just that much easier.”

Seeking cooperation in Indian education, Mr. Cameron said, “I think we have some of the best universities of the world and I have brought 14 Vice-Chancellors with me. We have one of the strongest science bases in the world and we brought institutions like Welcome Trust with us.” Cameron said at a panel discussion on Indo-U.K. trade here. He said these kinds of decisions are sometimes difficult to take as they require taking on “vested” interests. “We are keen to discuss these issues with our Indian friends and colleagues. We have strong financial, insurance and banking services,” he said. “We have to work with friends, including India, to bring what we think will be the biggest stimulus to our economies - expanded trade, completion of Doha Round and looking at investment in each other countries,” he said. Britain is witnessing a sluggish recovery after being hit by global financial meltdown in 2008-09. Faced with spiralling fiscal deficit, the U.K. government has resorted to massive austerity measures. Its economy grew by just 1.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2010 after clocking 0.3 per

cent expansion in the previous three months. Seeking cooperation in Indian education, Mr. Cameron said, “I think we have some of the best universities of the world and I have brought 14 Vice-Chancellors with me. We have one of the strongest science bases in the world and we brought institutions like Welcome Trust with us.” To a query over whether capping immigration will hamper investment from India, Business Secretary Vince Cable said the agreement between coalition partners of the ruling regime in Britain have agreed to form a pact on immigration outside the European Union, but it will not hamper investment from India. “I don’t think so (when asked if the immigration pact will impact Indian investment). You can be assured that the system we are going to introduce will respect the needs of foreign investors,” he said.

‘Chinese beliefs pose gravest threat to Indian tigers’ Have the tiger parts really got healing and aphrodisiac powers? Or is it just a myth?

C

hina might have banned the use of tiger body parts in traditional medicines. But the demand for the big cat’s bones and other parts has not come down because of the Chinese people’s belief in the healing and aphrodisiac qualities of tiger parts. Reports say the sale of alcoholbased health tonics with tiger bones in them is thriving in that country. The Chinese believe that these tonics can treat rheumatism, reduce joint stiffness, and increase sexual vigour. Have the tiger parts really got healing and aphrodisiac powers? Or is it just a myth? “Tiger parts don’t have any such powers. It is only a superstition,” says well-known wildlife and conservation filmmaker Shekar Dattatri. Shekar, who has spent over thirty years observing and filming tigers, says this Chinese ‘superstition’ poses the gravest threat to the tiger in India. While interacting with the audience after the screening of his documentary ‘The Truth about Tigers’ at the Dakshinachitra in Chennai on Saturday, he said the

Chinese demand for tiger parts is fuelling poaching by organised criminal gangs. These gangs, mainly members of highly-skilled hunting tribes like the Baheliya and Bawaria from central India, travel to wildlife reserves across the country on poaching expeditions. These gangs are paid Rs 2 to 3 lakh for every tiger they hunt down. The lack of enforcement of wildlife laws helps the poachers. State forest departments have neither the resources nor the expertise to prevent poaching, he says. There are over 20,000 field staff vacancies in forest departments across the country because of ‘lack of funds’. But at the same time, there was no dearth of budgetary allocation for unnecessary and undesirable ‘civil works’ in the forests in the name of saving the tiger, he points out. The poached tiger’s parts are being smuggled to China via Nepal. Only the Chinese government can stop the smuggling. “But they don’t do anything to prevent it,” rues Shekar. “Lots of countries are concerned about the fate of the Indian tiger. But nobody wants to antagonise the

Shekar Dattatri calls ‘The Truth about Tigers’ an educational documentary. He says his aim in bringing out this documentary was to tell ordinary people how they can contribute to saving the tiger. Chinese government since China is a more powerful country,” he said. Does he believe that the poaching of the tigers in India will end if the Chinese government lifted the ban on farm-bred tigers? It wouldn’t change the situation, he said, since the Chinese believe that the healing and aphrodisiac qualities of the wild tigers are greater than those raised in farms or cages. If the poaching of the tigers is the most serious threat to the tiger population, equally serious is the illegal hunting of their preys by locals, which makes it impossible for the tigers to survive. When the numbers of their preys come down, the tigers enter human habitats to kill cattle and other animals. This creates a man-tiger clash that ultimately results in the

death of the big cat at the hands of the locals. So, how many tigers are now left in India? Less than 1,500, says Shekar. But the tiger is a prolific breeder, he goes on to add. Their numbers can be increased drastically if we approach the issue with determination. “We have seen the number of tigers increasing in places where the anti-poaching drive was enforced and hunting of prey animals was controlled. The Project Tiger also helped. But we should see a drastic increase in the number. For that we need to take four crucial steps.” The four steps Shekar suggests are: Stop poaching totally, modernise forest departments, create space for the tiger and make the best use of the knowledge of the wildlife biologists.

NRI takes Madras university for a ride

City airport best in India

The Mumbai airport has ranked fourth in world, beating foreign airports such as San Francisco and Zurich, for offering best quality services in the category of airports handling 1.5 crore to 2.5 crore passengers per year. The ranking was awarded by the Airport Council International (ACI), an independent global agency that conducts quality audits on airports. This also makes the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport the best airport in India in the particular category. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport is the only other Indian airport to qualify in the category. Seoul’s Gimpo International Airport, Vancouver

and Taipei airport in China are three airports that have fared better than Mumbai in the survey. The ACI survey team randomly selects 1,500 passengers to gauge an airport’s service quality. Its questionnaire seeks passenger feedback on parameters such as

services from the airport staff, rates offered by the retail stores and connectivity within terminals. On a passenger satisfaction index of five, Mumbai recorded a score of 4.34. This is a distinct improvement over the earlier satisfaction scores of 4.20 in the first quarter of 2010 and 3.83 in the second quarter of 2009. “This is one of the few independent surveys that truly echo the views of passengers,” said GV Krishna Reddy, chairman, Mumbai International Airport Limited (MAIL). Across three categories, divided on the basis of airports’ passenger handling capacity, Mumbai airport

stood 23rd out of 146 contenders. Last year, Mumbai airport ranked 87th in the same survey. Airport officials said enhancement of terminal infrastructure and etiquette training of staff are some of the reasons that made the difference. “Infrastructure-wise we have more aerobridges, fancy food courts and services such as spas and salons. The airport has been investing a lot in improving staff behaviour across departments such as customs, immigration, airline and security staff,” said an airport official requesting anonymity, as he not authorised to talk to the media.

CHENNAI: A non-resident Indian has taken the University of Madras and many students in the United Arab Emirates for a royal ride by allegedly siphoning off several lakh rupees collected as fees for courses offered through an overseas offcampus centre of the university’s Institute of Distance Education. Officials of the university and the Indian consulate in Dubai are in touch to take legal action against Nandan Balakrishnan, a native of Kerala, and recover the money. Balakrishnan had established the Campus Educational Institute in Karama, Dubai, through which the Institute of Distance Education was offering various academic programmes for the past five years. It is alleged that he did not remit fees to the tune of Rs 30 lakh to the university till date. Consequently, the university withheld the results of some students who had written examinations and also declined permission to some others to appear in the examinations. “We learnt about the scam only when a girl whose result was withheld showed us the fee receipt, issued by the Dubai centre, during the monthly grievance redressal meeting here,” University of Madras vice-chancellor G Thiruvasagam told.

What does the new Rupee symbol mean to a layman? S

ince Indian Government announced the new symbol for Indian Rupee last week, the country is abuzz with comments and statements on what the new symbol means to the economy in the international arena. The Rupee symbol is a blend of the Devanagri ‘Ra’ and Roman ‘R’ and is meant to provide a distinctive character and identity to the currency. With this, the Indian Rupee has joined the elite club of currencies like US Dollar, British Pound, Japanese Yen and the Euro, which are the only other four currencies in the world to have a distinct symbol. Many luminaries have chorused the view that the new symbol heralds India’s arrival on the international scene and that the country is now ready to take on the world. But are we? Is this statement more an aspiration than reality? What does the new symbol mean to the common man? A reality check is essential. First, economic progress in grand manner notwithstanding, a

recent report by Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative indicates that there are 421 million multi-dimensionally poor people in eight of the Indian states (Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal) as against 410 million poor people in 26 of the poorest African countries. This simply means the common man needs basic things first to be able to appreciate and participate in India’s ascension to global biggie status. Second, four currencies before the Indian Rupee opted for unique symbol in order to distinguish themselves in global financial transactions. These four are also the most freely convertible currencies in the world today. Can you think of a major international financial transaction dealt in any other currency other than these four? It’s a rarity. Where does Indian Rupee stack up here? Indian Rupee is neither treated as a reserve currency nor is it as convertible as these currencies, which simply means

The design was chosen in a competition won by a teacher at one of the country’s Indian Institutes of Technology. Uday Kumar’s design was chosen from a shortlist of five and he was awarded around £3,500 in prize money. Indian Rupee does not carry the same weight as the four currencies carrying a symbol today. There is no doubt that the new Indian Rupee looks classy. It aptly represents our cultural heritage. But it stops there. Everything else the symbol is intended is statement of aspiration and seems far away from truth. If the genius cartoonist R K Laxman was in good health he would have explained in his typical inimitable style what the new Indian Rupee symbol means to the common man.

Gurpreet Singh shows his artwork depicting Uday Kumar’s new graphic symbol for the Indian Rupee.

Interestingly, the short-list of five that was in circulation didn’t include the chosen option.

DOWNLOAD the new rupee symbol Mangalore based Foradian Technologies Pvt Ltd has created a new font Rupee_Foradian. This way one can download the all new rupee symbol on to the computer for free, according to a report on OneIndia News website. The Rupee font can be downloaded from Foradian blog at http://blog.foradian.com The report says that the

company created a vector image of the new rupee sign and mapped the ‘grave accent’ symbol, the key just above the tab button on the keyboard, with it. This keystroke was chosen because most users and programmers don’t use it. The users can watch a video showing how easy it is to use the symbol in Youtube, report said.

25 percent world’s biggest rat British babies born to Indians, Pakistanis Australian Scientists discover

Skull of the Giant Rat

A

rchaeologists have discovered the remains what they believe of the world’s largest rat that scurried on the Earth nearly 2,000 years ago. The skeletal remains of the monster rat, which is believed to have an estimated body weight of about six kg, were found during cave excavations in East Timor. The excavations carried out by a team from CISCO --Australia’s national body for scientific research -- also turned up 13 other species of rats, 11 of which are new to science, with eight of the rats estimated to have weighed more than 1 kg.

August 2010 Edition

The researchers believe the giant rat survived up until about 1,000 to 2,000 years ago. Today’s heftiest rats weigh around 2 kg and live in rain forests in the Philippines and New Guinea. Dr Ken Aplin, who led the excavation, said the latest findings indicate the rodents dominated the East Timorese animal kingdom about five million years ago. “It was rat land with at least 13 species of rodents on an island that isn’t that big,” he was quoted as saying by the ABC News. “So it’s incredible diversity,” he said, adding large-scale clearing of forest for agriculture probably

caused the extinctions. “This may have only been possible following the introduction of metal tools,” Aplin said. The team now plans to investigate an area of swampy rain forest where they believe some rare grass-eating rat species may still survive. “I do hold out that hope that some of the smaller species and some of possibly one or two of the largest animals, these grass-eating specialists, might still survive,” Dr Aplin said. “And if so we need to act quickly to conserve them.” The findings have appeared in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History.

Almost a quarter of babies in Britain are born to immigrant mothers, mostly from India, Pakistan and Poland. The numbers of babies whose mothers were born abroad went up by around 3,500 in 2009, from 170,834 to 174,400. The three most common countries of origin of foreign-born mothers are India, Pakistan and Poland, the Daily Mail reported, citing a statement by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). In London, around half of babies have foreign-born mothers. And in some London outskirts, around three quarters of children have mothers who were born abroad. The number of children born to mothers from outside Britain has been growing fast in recent years as immigration has reached record levels. In 1998, there were 86,456 babies born to mothers born abroad. Over a period of 10 years, the share of babies with foreign-born mothers rose from 13.6 percent to 24.7 percent, according to the ONS.

The ONS also said women born in Britain average 1.84 children each during their lifetime, while women who came from abroad will have 2.51 children during their lives. Immigration and higher birthrates were the biggest factor in pushing up the population rate. The British population will hit the 70 million mark in 2029, the ONS said.

Women enjoy best sex at 40 Women have higher sex drives in their thirties and early forties than in their younger years because they fear their “biological clock” is ticking. A study showed that despite the fact their bodies may be in decline, women are more likely to have sexual fantasies and affairs as they approach 40, reports telegraph.co.uk. Experts said that as women approach the milestone, they may sense that their “window of opportunity” to have children is closing and their fertility is declining. Their instinctual reaction is an increased appetite for sex, the researchers said, an explanation which could explain the rise of the “cougar” - a woman who seeks out flings with younger partners. The survey of nearly 900 women divided respondents into three groups: those at their most fertile age (19 to 26 years), those whose fertility was declining (27 to 45 years) and those who were approaching or had reached menopause. “Results indicate women with declining fertility have greater sexual motivations and increased sexual behaviours than do women with relatively high fertility,” David Buss, a researcher, said.

Steps to make your Partner feel SPECIAL E

xpressing love to a spouse is important for all couples, no matter how long they’ve been married. For newly wed couples, it is more significant as love is the basic tool of foundation for a fruitful marriage life. Becoming comfortable with one another can lead the partners to express their intimate relationships. There is a saying ‘In every good thing, disadvantage follows’. In the same way the good partners will face hurdles and pains which is a part of life. But those pains can be erased through proper dialogue between the two, by understanding

each others short comings. So in order to avoid alienating or hurting your spouse, here are some few steps to express your love for your spouse. 1. Firstly, cook the favourite food of your spouse. Let him know that you made it to make him feel loved and appreciated. This is one of the small and unselfish act that can show to your spouse how much you love him. 2. Always do anything he want from you or go to a place he likes. If there’s some place your spouse has been wanting to go, make

If you struggle to figure out what makes your spouse’s love clock tick, just ask him. Your spouse will be pleased at the simple act that you’re making an effort to show your love 4. Appreciate your spouse infront of others. This is because public praise can have the benefit of enhancing your spouse’s selfconfidence as you let others know your love for him.. Rejection leads to addiction! Romantic brain signals are the reason why people have cravings for booze and chocolate after being dumped, say experts. Adults who had been rejected were shown pictures of past lovers and scientists found parts of the brain linked to addiction suddenly became active, reports dailystar.co.uk. “The pain of romantic rejection may be built into our systems,” said Lucy Brown of Yeshiva University.

BOLLYWOOD MUSIC Atif Aslam to team up with Guns N Roses

AISHA Singers: Amit Trivedi, Anushka Manchanda, Neuman Pinto, Nikhil D’Souza, Raman Mahadevan, Samrat Kaushal, Anusha Mani, Ash King and Tochi Raina Music Director: Amit Trivedi Lyricist: Javed Akhtar

Pakistani pop singer Atif Aslam has revealed that he will soon work with renowned American hard rock band ‘Guns N’ Roses’ on a fusion project. Terming the project a milestone in his singing career, Aslam said that he would have the opportunity to work with the band’s former lead guitarist Slash, Gliby Clarke and Chris Martin, reports Dawn.com. He even said that by collaborating with ‘Guns N’ Roses’, he would try to bring closer the people of the USA and Pakistan. The pop singer also said that he would also like to invite other prominent Pakistani singers and musicians, including those doing classical music, to join hands with him when it came to work with the western musicians. He also admitted that he had recorded a Punjabi track with some of the band members, which was his own composition.

Rating:

W

ith the stupendous music of “Dev D”, Amit Trivedi proved his prowess and now with the soundtrack of forthcoming film “Aisha”, he has reaffirmed that he is a young composer to look out for. The music of the film, starring Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol, is young, hip and has a raw feel to it. The album offers six originals and two remixes. The album kickstarts with the title track “Suno Aisha” crooned by Ash King with backing vocals from the composer himself. The prelude holds the interest with the inclusion of the saxophone in the musical arrangement. It is foot- tapping, exuberant and full of rhythm. A great beginning to the album. Next in line is “Gal mitthi mitthi bol”, an amazing folk outing by Tochi Raina. The Punjabi song is not like any run-of -the-mill track. It has the potential of becoming a chartbuster with its unpredictable orchestration and a fun element. The remix version of the song is

equally engaging. “Shaam” by Trivedi and Neuman Pinto touches the heart instantly. The acoustic version has a raw feel, as if someone is singing live in front of you - which is the song’s USP. Its soft rendition of words and melodious music enchants the listener. Then Anushka Manchanda, Samrat Kaushal and Raman Mahadevan sing “Behke behke”. The song has a complete carnival feel. The sound of the accordion and the fast-paced vocals are intermixed with English and Hindi lyrics. While the male singers have done a good job, Anushka has surpassed them with the throw of her impressive voice. It is more of a dance number. A contrast to this is the soft, me-

lodious “Lehrein” sung by Anusha Mani, Neuman Pinto and Nikhil D’Souza. The soulful, poignant track is quite likeable. The song also has a remixed version, but the original is more appealing. Finally Anushka sings “By the way”, a track with a powerful starting. Neuman gives ample support to Anushka and adds to this youthful, energetic and electrifying song. The rock-pop song has a punch and will be liked by the younger generation a lot. Amit Trivedi deserves to be applauded for the soundtrack of “Aisha”, which is contemporary yet different. The composer has tried to fuse new sounds in the music of the film, which has worked very well.

Thank got nobody killed in stage collapse Music composer AR Rahman has thanked God that nobody from his crew was killed when his stage collapsed last month. Rahman’s staff was injured and instruments were destroyed when a lighting rig collapsed during preparations for a gig in Detroit. “I thank God they’re all still alive,” the BBC quoted him as saying. The incident forced the composer to postpone several American and European dates on his ‘Jai Ho’ tour. At the time, Rahman said the accident had “a profound effect” on his band, dancers and crew. “But it is the fans to whom I send the most heartfelt apology. It was a stressful time,” he added. Rahman has rescheduled shows in North America for September. But on Tuesday he announced

that shows planned for Zurich, Paris and Mannheim this weekend have been cancelled “due to circumstances beyond our control”. However, he has promised to go back to the US to perform later this year.

Is it end of Facebook success? WASHINGTON: Facebook may have finally reached a saturation point, with only 320,000 new US users in June after a blockbuster gain in May of more than 7.8 million, suggest a new report. It could be that controversies over privacy policies and dominance have kept users away. Or the numbers could simply be misleading. But with 125 million active US accounts, and nearly half a billion accounts worldwide -- it seems like everyone who had to, has joined the site, so what now? Although it’s the second most visited website, after Google, it is not a money making machine like Google yet. Facebook’s ads are all about what you are interested in; according to the data you tell it. So the ad revenue is lesser -- close to 1 billion dollars, compared to Google’s 25 billion dollars annual revenue. Finally, if Facebook really has reached a tipping point, the only way to go from there is down, and the website will have to look for more innovative ways of managing its users, and retain them.

An SLR gives you a whole array of shooting options at your fingertips, including manual control and the ability to change lenses and add accessories like external flashes as you need. `Signal in iPhone 3GS better than iPhone 4’ SEATTLE: Gripes from some people about the iPhone 4’s antenna design have overshadowed many buyers’ comments that the newest smart phone from Apple Inc gets far better reception than previous models. As it turns out, the iPhone 4 drops more calls than the older iPhone 3GS — “less than one additional dropped call per 100,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs said during a news conference Friday. Although that doesn’t sound like a big difference, a typical U.S. phone only drops one to 1.5 calls per 100, said Dan Hays, who focuses on telecommunications at management consulting firm PRTM. So another one per 100 could mean that the iPhone 4 drops nearly twice as many calls as the older model, Hays said. IPhone 4 owners in the U.S. have endured other service issues in the three short weeks the phone has been on sale. AT&T Inc., Apple’s exclusive iPhone partner in the U.S., acknowledged that because of a software defect, its network was slower than it should be for people trying to upload photos, videos and other content from the phone to the Web.

Nikon D3000 As long as you don’t expect too many fancy bells and whistles, you won’t be disappointed with the quality and performance of the D3000. Editor’s rating: 8.0/10 User rating: 8.9/10 Good: Very lightweight and easy to carry • Excellent image quality at low ISO levels • Speedy performance for an entry-level digital SLR Bad: LCD screen is a little grainy • No live view • ISO only up to 1600 • SD card door is flimsy Specs: Digital SLR • 10.2 megapixels • 3 inch • Secure Digital Card, Secure Digital High Capacity RRP: AU$999.00 (approx.)

Canon EOS 1000D The Canon EOS 1000D is a good entry-level dSLR, but only its photo quality stands out among the competition. Good: Excellent photo quality for its class • Solid performance Bad: Maximum ISO of 1600 • No spot meter • Annoying, in-viewfinder, focus-point display Specs: Digital SLR • 10.1 megapixels • 2.5 inch • Secure Digital Card, Secure Digital High Capacity RRP: AU$899.00 (approx.)

Indiantimes’ more picks with the price range AU$800-$1500:

Canon EOS 550D, Olympus E-620, Nikon D5000, Sony Alpha DSLR-A550, Pentax K-x

Do you have a particular price point in mind? Under AU$1000 is a common target, which mostly limits your choices to the entry-level models in each manufacturer’s range, such as the Canon EOS 1000D or the Nikon D3000. With a bit more to spend you can get a camera with a few more features; that way as your skills progress, the camera can grow with you.

Features The biggest trend to take off in the digital SLR space over the past few years has been HD video. The Canon 550D and Nikon D5000 are competent digital SLRs, and both feature HD video recording as part of the feature set; the 550D at full 1080p, and the D5000 at 720p. The 550D also offers full manual control in movie mode to give the greatest flexibility in choosing exposure. Some digital SLRs come with an articulating LCD screen, and all SLRs listed here apart from the D3000 come with Live View, which allows you to compose an image on screen rather than looking through the viewfinder.

Batteries and weight Most of the digital SLRs listed below come with a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, but for AA battery compatibility you will be limited to a number of models in the Pentax range, such as the K-x. You may also want to invest in a dedicated battery grip for your camera which holds extra battery charge and attaches to the SLR to provide a larger grip area as well. If you’re looking for a lightweight camera, the Canon 1000D, Olympus E-620 and the Nikon D3000 are the most feather-like of the options here, weighing in at 450 grams, 475 grams and 485 grams respectively (body only). You may also want to consider a Micro Four Thirds camera.

Lenses All cameras listed in our round-up below come in a kit configuration, with one or two lenses to get you started. Remember to be aware that each company uses different lens mounts: Olympus bodies have the advantage of being compatible with the Four Thirds system; Nikon uses the F-mount, which means you can use most old lenses, even 50-year-old ones, from the company (though autofocus and metering may be unavailable); and Sony is compatible with some old Konica Minolta lenses.

Creating wealth through property investments and managing a successful property investment portfolio

T

he objective is to create and manage a healthy non speculative property investment portfolio which is able to provide for your lifestyle in the future. To achieve financial freedom or financial security by using property investments as the preferred wealth creation vehicle.

The Start

Most people fail to achieve a certain level of financial success in their lives because they never start. They fail to do something about it. Whatever the reasons may have been so far of for not starting, that should all be kept behind and a fresh attempt should be made as to finding out how to start or to start? To do something, to take control, that’s should be the attitude. Most people don’t start because of fear, lack of knowledge or laziness. When you establish that there is certainly a need for you achieve financial security, that element, that drive with education can remedy all the three, fear, lack of knowledge and laziness. I remember a conversation with a gentlemen and it went along the lines of this “I migrated to Australia in 1986 and in 87 I had an opportunity to purchase a 3 bedroom townhouse in Hawthorn for $180K and I had the means to purchase but then I thought nah who would want a townhouse in Hawthorn nah, then again in 97 I almost purchased a 2 bedroom apartment in Richmond for $230K, I was close but then I thought nah who you’d want an apartment in Richmond nah. He was not able to find that special property he was looking for till that day in 2008, now he was quite flustered that the Townhouse he saw in 87 went for over $800K in an Auction recently and how it is too hard now”. Start, start somewhere, starting to do something about it is by far the most important part in this whole wealth building plan. Starting as soon as you’re working career begins is ideal or otherwise make endeavor to start as soon as it is possible. Starting to do something will give you the confidence which will be apparent and it will help you define your goals, it will create discipline, it will improve your knowledge and it will give you options in the future. So start, plan and take action to execute it.

The Plan

A careful, conservative and correct long term property investment plan should be prepared taking in consideration of all of the individuals financial and personal circumstances. You plan will allow you to look at the bigger picture. The mind is a commanding might and mental picture can help turn goals into reality. The plan must have the right attitude about it; it must provide a blueprint, a guide and the plan must be followed stringently. The plan should have the objectives of the investments explained clearly. The plan should be a safe plan and

it should consist of only non speculative investments, property investments in this context. The plan should be based on facts and figures merely; it should be commercially feasible; it must stack up in numbers. The plan must also be simple. If quality time is spent on planning and structuring the whole property investment portfolio at the beginning, from there on its more of implementation than anything else, there may slight variations along the way but the core of it remains the same. Most investors turn to financial planners or financial advisors for property investment planning and get served with a dose of financial planning, securities, equities, managed funds, superannuation, insurance, growth assets, units, trusts, syndicates etc everything else but direct property investing. Accountants can do their tax but property investment planning is not their trade, they can tell you the tax benefits of it but to list real estate or to advice on real estate, they are not licensed, as estate agents to do so. We can help you prepare a property investment plan if you are starting out or if you are an active investor already we can help you to consolidate your existing investment properties in a plan to add further value to the portfolio.

Options, Other than Property

Property, Equities or Cash. Equities, shares, managed funds etc are growth assets like property but are more volatile. You may have the prospect of better short term gains with the risk factor attached to it that you may lose more as well. Cash is for reserve purposes and flexibility reasons. Cash doesn’t grow in itself and it doesn’t protect itself from the detrimental effects of inflation. We are property centric, our confidence and passion for property as a preferred wealth creation vehicle over the long term remains strong, as compared with other forms of investments such as shares and managed funds etc the rates of return on your money is similar to that of property investments however, the risk factor attached to it is lower. Whereas equities (Shares etc) fluctuate on speculation therefore exposing you to more danger, residential housing market remains stable and steady, less volatile. *For shares, the annual gross return between 1980 and 2000, based on the All Ordinaries Index (Source: ASX) was 13.2 %. Based on the Residential Investment Property Index (Source: REIA) for the 6 major capital cities over the same period, for property it was 15.6% The ability to borrow is higher in property investing then share investing. Property can be geared with Loan to Value Ratios (LVRs) of up to 80-90%, while shares safely can only be geared to 50%, therefore lenders also preferring to lend more on investments where property is used as security. On the other hand if you borrow money to invest in shares, you run the risk of a margin call, usually requiring you to sell shares in a down market to reduce the LVR to a limit acceptable to the lender. You can gear or borrow against residential property to a much higher level because of the lower risk, ensuring you a huge leverage advantage that ultimately increases your returns and your wealth. *Direct property investing gives you a complete control over all aspects of your investments in comparison to share investing where you are at the whim and mercy of the directors of the company. Small investors have a very little say in the destiny of a company and control usually lies with larger institutions. When you buy residential investment property, the ultimate control of your wealth building plan lies with you. You can choose your extent of involvement and do as much or as little as you like. *Investing in median-priced residential property for the long term may not

be exciting, but it is relatively safe and rewarding. Time *Building wealth is achieved through borrowing, buying and keeping residential property for the long term. It requires time – not timing. If you endeavor and that your circumstances allow you to buy invest for the long term, you will see enormous benefits from property investments, like I’d mentioned an incident before in The Start section, if that person at the time in 1986 had invested in that 3br Townhouse in Hawthorn at $180K, held it for the long term, geared it correctly acquiring more properties in likes of that 2 br apartment in Richmond, by now in 2010, over 24 years that is, he would have amassed an fortune and ready to consider part time consultancy or semi retirement, well and truly into his financial freedom and financial independence zone, just having the confidence of that feeling that things of doing fine, its under control and things are getting taken care of. Time keeps passing by, unnoticed, relentlessly, utilize it towards your advantage, in terms of property investments use time for your advantage by trying to get in the market as soon as possible with a long term view of planning and servicing the investments correctly and holding on to them for long term. Using the equity which is continuously building up with time and carefully gearing it further to acquire more investment properties, again with time; will lead to a healthy non speculative property investment portfolio on which you can retire comfortably. Often there is a pursuit amongst novice investors to time the market, they want to get in the “right time” or wait till the “right time” comes and they will know then weather it is the “right time” then. There is no need of trying to time the market; it is the “right time” to enter the market whenever you are possibly ready. *Capital growth for residential property in major capital cities has averaged 7.8% per year for the last 20 years; it is not a constant growth rate each and every year. While property values do not experience the extreme ups and downs of the share market, there are times when they stagnate, and times when they surge, creating cycles, for a long term property investors, time soothes out these fluctuations. How long in terms of time is the question which can be differentiated between a property investor against a property trader, speculator or developer, as per our property investment philosophies we recommend our property investors to have a time mind set of 10, 20, 30 years, never sell there is no need to. *The whole reason of investing is to have future wealth and security. Then, when your property has grown in value and the rent has outstripped your interest payments, you should be receiving a great income from your tenants. *Buying property to keep is a whole new way of thinking. Yet when people talk about superannuation they immediately think in phrases like retirement package, future security, income assurance, nest egg and a time frame of 30 years or more. it is time to use these terms too when talking about property because property can be the best form of ‘superannuation’, the best ‘pension fund’ and the best ‘insurance fund’ you will ever have. *All comes at the proper time to him who knows how to wait.

The Strategy

The goals and objectives must be clearly defined before you begin with it. It is important to decide when you would like to retire and what other benefits you want to achieve out of your property investment planning and then work out accordingly the assets that you will need

to give you that income you require for financial freedom and financial security. >> Begin with your principle place of residence, *Start saving as early as early as possible, so that when you buy your first home, you’ll already have a large deposit. Borrow to buy your first home (P&I Loan). Make sure it is affordable, functional and within your means. All other mod cons come later. Pay off your home loan as quickly as possible, although there is no need to completely pay it off before you start the next step. >> Acquire your first investment property, *Use your own home to as collateral to borrow the entire amount for your first investment property, plus the associated costs. Ideally the loan should be fixed rate, interest only. Only invest in non speculative investment properties. >> Pursue to build a healthy non speculative investment property portfolio, *Acquire more properties, as cash flows increase, refinance to buy more and more properties using the growing equity as collateral. Apply for a tax variation to enhance cash flows. Be organised, careful and prepared. Budget carefully and learn to handle large sums of money. Set up access to credit lines. Keep some cash on hand. Fix the interest rates for at least 3 years. Take out insurances. Set reasonable rents. Maintain the property. Be patient, stay committed and disciplined as you wait for cash flows and values to rise. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking the grass is greener elsewhere. Don’t sell just to see how much you have made. >> Balance the debt on retirement, *When you retire, rents become your main source of income. Manipulate the debt levels by selling one or more properties to reduce the loan so that you now have a positive cash flow. Buy any luxuries you want, enjoy your retirement and celebrate living longer comfortably with champagne.

Finance

Correct loan structuring is almost as important as choosing the right investment property. With the most banks and other financial institutions providing a large range of property investment financing options it is more likely that you will be able to find a solution suiting your circumstances the most. There is a range of products available in the market from straight forward fixed rate loans to more complex and flexible, variable and split loans. In general on investment properties interest only loan is favoured as you can claim the interest as deductions whereas, owner occupiers should favour principle and interest loans on their principle place of residence and try to pay it off as soon as possible. Investors should carefully look at the degree of flexibility attached to the finance When ascertaining your borrowing capacity the lenders usually look for three main things from the applicant its status, security and serviceability Ideally it is suggested that you liaise with a experienced mortgage broker to ascertain your financial circumstances, explain to them your objectives and goals related to the pursuit of this financing, how your tax is relevant etc and generally the mortgage brokers can come up with appropriate solutions. Our company has associations with reputed financiers from the mortgage broking industry, which our clients can choose from.

Tax

Property investment strategy should complement the investor’s tax planning that should be the objective. Weather to negatively gear or positively should rely on each individuals personal and financial

circumstances. Comprehensive information regarding investment properties and tax can be obtained from the Australian Tax Office (ATO) and other qualified tax practitioners. Resources such as Rental properties, Capital Gains Tax and Guide to depreciation have useful and relevant information. Our associations with experienced accounting practices can help our clients to get expert advice on effective tax planning and structuring.

Maintaining the assets

Building wealth through residential property means not only following the right principles, but also preparing for all that might happen before it happens, A Financial management plan should prepared, you should know manage large amounts of money flowing in and out of bank accounts. Managing your portfolio needs a businesslike approach. Develop the mindset with which you can manage and master your finances and protect your wealth building plan • Prepare a budget • Fix the interest rate • Take interest only loans • Set up a credit line • Reduce tax instalments • Aim for a reasonable LVR • Don’t count on unreliable income • Don’t speculate • Look into rent insurance • Check out mortgage repayment insurance • Consider income replacement insurance • Take out term life and disability insurance • Invest in health insurance • Get property insurance • Avoid external partnerships • Make a will • Gain more knowledge • Don’t get too greedy Building wealth through residential property gives you complete control over the management of your investment – but don’t confuse management with involvement. Unfortunately, some investors feel that they must be actively involved in everything that happens to their property. You don’t have to be personally responsible for every little incident. Do-it-yourself investment in residential property does not mean do it all yourself. The returns from property can be so good that you can afford to pay a specialist to do the maintenance and management, yet still achieve great results. It is a matter of putting a value on your own time. Whether you use a professional manager or not, you should consider the following points to maximize your returns and minimise the fuss • Keep an eye on maintenance • Distinguish between maintenance and improvements • Screen your tenants • Set a reasonable rent • Prepare a sound lease • Follow up quickly on arrears • Prepare ahead for change of tenants • Minimise the vacancy rate • Make sure you have a bond • Keep a business relationship with the tenants • Do regular inspections • Seek professional property management In general have a positive, professional and business like approach and that will help you create and manage a successful property investment portfolio. *We have in this article referred to extracts from a very good book written by Jan Somers called More Wealth from Residential Property, it’s an excellent publication and we recommend it to everyone to read it, whether you are investing in property for the first time or whether you are an experienced investor

WINE STORAGE Solutions and Tips A

ncient people found that instead of ruining the grape juice, the yeast changed it into an entirely different drink, and one with a kick, because fermentation also changes any sugar present into alcohol. Ancient peoples also decided that this, too, was not such a bad thing, and began to deliberately make juices, mostly grape juices, into wines. At that time, wine storage solutions weren’t much of an issue. The choices were just crocks and ewers and with little way to control temperature or humidity, it was never certain that anything kept for long would be anything but vinegar when opened. Eventually, caves and cellars were found to be good conditions for wine to reach its peak and the first wine cellars came to be. Just as they learned that wine needs different conditions to develop and quite another set for aging and storage, modern wine lovers have learned that wine storage solutions need to meet different situations. For modest wines in a home that is kept at a reasonably moderate temperature and humidity, open wine racks provide adequate wine storage for many tastes. Wine storage coolers can be purchased to control the

Are you an oenophile? If you even know what the word means, the chances are that you are indeed a lover of wine. Wine is an almost mystical beverage that came into being simply because yeast is almost everywhere, and when it landed in grape juice or almost any other sweet liquid, it would cause fermentation.

exact conditions your wine will be stored in. Coolers can be found in a multitude of sizes, ranging from a single bottle cooler, best for individual use, to refrigerated walk-in coolers for extensive collections. An individual’s choice of wine storage solutions will depend on both the size of the collection to be stored and the individual’s budget. If wine is to remain at it’s peak flavor or to reach it through careful aging, it is fussy. Wine has a very narrow temperature array ranging from 40 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit with as little variation as can be. Temperature variations should occur as infrequently as possible. Under one time per year is recommended, and humidity should be kept at more than fifty per cent as well. A cooler should be free from light or out of direct sunlight that is harmful to wines. One important factor to consider in a wine storage unit is the angle the bottles will be housed at. Preferably, the bottles should be stored on horizontally on their sides, but can be stored at up to a 45 degree angle. Wine racks are the best storage method, but coolers are also sometimes used to stack bottles. A storage rack should be able to accommodate both standard wine bottles and unique sizes and shapes. A final consideration is appearance, if the storage unit will be on display.

Taiwanese dentists have urged fast food chains to drop oversized hamburgers from their menus following a growing number of jaw injury cases. Patients have developed sore jaws or had difficulties opening their mouths after consuming giant burgers, the China Post quoted professor Hsu Ming-lung of the School of Dentistry at National Yang-Ming University as saying. Problems can arise when fast-food fans tuck into hamburgers larger than (three inches) high, Hsu said. A human mouth is designed to gape over objects measuring only up to four centimetres.

Complete with snow-dusted gum trees

L

ast year a group of ‘no fear’ wombats headed up to Mt Baw Baw in what would eventually become a yearly pilgrimage at the commencement of each snow season in Australia. This year (2003) we got up at the crack of dawn on a cold and damp Saturday morning to check out what Mt Buller had to offer those who enjoy snow sports, and we found it to be quite pleasing. One of the highlights was careening down the aptly named ‘Wombat’ run at Mt Buller - a spiritual experience for our group indeed. But first the vitals: Mt Buller is located some 3.5-hours drive from Melbourne in the Victorian alps, roughly 250km north-east of the city. The Summit at Mt Buller rises to 1805m above sea level and on a good day, the views are absolutely spectactular, with mountain ranges stretching far off in to the distance and snow gums swaying gently, covered in the glorious white stuff. The alpine resort offers some 180 hectares of ski trails, which range from wide open straight runs, to intricate and varied slopes, with plenty of breath-taking tree skiing for those brave enough to try. The Mt Buller Alpine Resort has some 7000 beds available in hotels, ski clubs and lodges and a further 2300 beds are on offer in nearby towns, including Mansfield. All up, there are some 25 ski lifts, which have the capacity to shift some 40,000 people every hour. Generally speaking, the ski season at Mt Buller (and most of Australia’s alpines resorts) kicks off in early June (Queen’s Birthday long weekend), and usually closes during October where the resort turns into an extreme sports haven for, well, extremists.

The Journey After packing the 4WD with two snowboards, one pair of skis, chains, sandwiches, choccies, apples, mandarines and the all important drinking water, we set off from Melbourne city centre at 5:13am. After passing many a plain-clothes cop car, our wombat-mobile arrived at Mt. Buller at bang-on 8:30am, though it must be said that the traffic was almost non-existant: It usually takes a little longer.

Indian veteran tailor Abdul Gaffar Shaikh, who has been stitching flags for the last 19 years, aligns a national flag by his sewing machine at a government workshop in Mumbai on August 3, 2010 in preparation for Independence Day.

While the entire mountain wasn’t covered in metres of fresh pow-pow, the major runs had a solid 30cm snow base, with a covering of manmade snow for extra carvability. There was a lot of cloud cover, which reduced visibility significantly on many runs, but it was truly inspiring to catch the chairlift up to the summit, rising above the clouds, to see the village buildings peeping through the mist (see photo ->). As was expected, we spent most of our daytrip on the Wombat run, which has a number of turns and tight switch-backs at the upper-most section, followed by a long, wide and often very steep decent to the chairlift, which was very exhilirating at full speed. Mt Buller is a beginner-friendly mountain, with the Bourke St run often the place of induction for newbies, though there are plenty of testing blue and black runs for those who crave something a little more challenging. Mt Buller has a new rail park, which can used by both snowboarders and skiiers, and is located right of the bottom of Baldy with a number of different beginner and intermediate rails.

Apparently the actress was unhappy with the remuneration offered to her and the way her character has been developed. After the success of Paa and Ishqiya, the actress hiked her price to that of other top actresses - which is rumoured to be around Rs 1.5 crore. That’s the asking price for Kareena and Katrina too. However, the makers of Dhamaal 2 refused to meet Vidya’s asking price or reach for a compromise and instead let her exit the project. However, those close to Vidya insist that the actress opted out of Dhamaal 2 not because of monetary reasons but because she was unhappy with the way her character has been developed.

The actor had essayed the role of Omar Hassan, president of the fictional Islamic Republic of Kamistan in the TV series 24,” a source revealed. “Anil exchanged number and email IDs with Naomi and they promised to keep in touch. She also noted down [Kapoor’s daughter] Sonam’s number knowing that she is now shooting in London and promised to contact her.”

Look, people remember only those performances that they like. But then, it’s not that they have not accepted me in my serious roles. If I limit myself only to comedy I will never be able to get out of it. I have to explore other genres. If I keep on doing the same thing, the audiences will get fed up, and more importantly I will get fed up. I need to get excited to go to the sets every day.

lam chick Sonam Kapoor has been termed a great kisser by her co-star Abhay Deol, who will be seen romancing with the actress in their recent film ‘Aisha’. Buzz has it that the uber cool couple share a hot kissing scene in the movie, which is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s ‘Emma’. While, Abhay Deol can be tagged a pro in the act, Sonam in ‘Aisha’ will be seen kissing for the first time in her career so far. Abhay has previously locked lips with hotties like Neha Dhupia in ‘Ek Chalis Ki Last Local’, Mahie Gill in ‘Dev.D’ and Neetu Chandra ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’. On being asked about the ratings he would give to Sonam on the kissing meter, the actor says that the girl is a cut above the rest. Abhay said that “Sonam is a great kisser”, and further declared, “In fact, she’s the best kisser out of all the co-stars I have shared a kissing scene with.” As to whether the two felt awkward while shooting for the intimate kissing scene, Abhay instantly quipped, “Not at all! Sonam and I share a great bond and due to the comfort level we share, doing the lip locking scene wasn’t very difficult.” Well, ‘Aisha’ is all set to release in August and the best judge to rate the Abhay-Sonam kiss on the kisso-meter will be none other than the audience!

ollywood star Salman Khan, who has gyrated to sizzling number “Munni Badnaam” with his sister-in-law Malaika Arora Khan in “Dabangg”, says apart from her only actress Shilpa Shetty can be counted among the best item girls in the industry. “Shilpa Shetty is very good in item numbers, “ Salman told reporters on being asked which actress according to him gives competition to Malaika as far as item numbers are concerned. Shilpa is popular for her sensuous moves in the song “U.P., Bihar lootne”, and “Chhaiya chhaiya” girl Malaika has featured in many item songs like “Hoth raseele”, “Kaal kaal”, and “Mahi ve”. While it took a little while for Salman to answer, his younger brother Arbaaz, who is married to Malaika, flattered his wife by saying: “Malaika gives competition to herself.” The actors, along with the cast and crew of “Dabangg”, were in the capital for the music launch of the film late Friday.

hilarious comedy with chart-busting music by Pritam & lyrics by Shabbir Ahmed, Ashish Pandit & Kumar. The film is directed by debutant Manoj Tiwari and written by Pankaj and Sachin who wrote blockbuster comedies like APNA SAPNA MONEY MONEY and KYA KOOL HAIN HUM. Produced by Ashok Ghai under Mukta Arts banner, HELLO DARLING is a rib-tickling, feel-good film all the way! The film also stars Chunky Pandey in a brief role. HELLO DARLING is slated to release on August 27, 2010.

Celina Jaitly has a strange superstition. She believes that English titles work well for her. Her No Entry experience has been very good. And the light-eyed actress says that most of her future films have English titles, which should work for her. These movies include Anees Bazmee’s Thank you, Neeraj Vora’s Run Bhola Run and Subhash Ghai’s Hello Darling. And she feels it is sheer coincidence that her next two films Will you marry me? and Showman are in angrezi. Glad Celina thinks this way. But honestly, what happened to the belief in things like performances. Shouldn’t actors be worrying about that rather than inane stuff like film titles. Well Celina, we fervently hope the English mantra works.

Sanjay Dutt & Kareena

It’s scary that EK ANOKHI guys like John PREM KAHANI If there is one thing that Bipasha Basu is afraid about, it’s the number of guys liking her boyfriend John Abraham. John is again teaming up with Abhishek Bachchan for DOSTANA 2. The beautiful actress revealed this at a press conference to unveil jewellery brand Gili’s new ad campaign. ‘It will be good only if girls like John. After DOSTANA, guys have also started liking him, which is very scary,’ said the Bong beauty. Speaking about her engagement ring, Bipasha said, ‘I’m hoping my engagement ring comes from John’s side. He needs to worry about it. I hope it’s nice and beautiful. Not too big, not too small. It has to be just the right size for my finger. But my engagement won’t happen soon. When we plan to do it, everyone will know.’ Bipasha’s film LAMHAA, which released last month, received mixed responses from the critics and audiences. So is she upset about it? ‘Every film has its own destiny. I am very proud to be a part of LAMHAA. The kind of appreciation I got from whoever saw the film was excellent. I have got fantastic feedback for my character Aziza. We can’t really control what happens to a film. The director of the film, Rahul Dholakia is a brilliant man and I would love to work with him again,’ stated Bipasha.

August 2010 Edition

After a long hiatus, Mahesh Manjrekar and Sanjay Dutt are back in Manjrekar’s ambitious film EK ANOKHI PREM KAHANI that will also star Kareena Kapoor. The film is a story of a blind girl and a badly disfigured man. Says Manjrekar, “The film was planned with Sanju and Kareena in mind after the latter debuted in J P Dutta’s film REFUGEE in 2000. Her pristine beauty and innocence was what I needed to play up against the character Sanju will play in the film.” Dutt and Manjrekar, who had worked together in sensitive films like VAASTAV and VIRUDDH among many others did not see eye-to-eye for a long time till they met up at the recently held IIFA awards ceremony and patched up.

Karisma tries to Deepika has forgiven save her marriage not forgotten Ranbir? It’s all in the hands of destiny. While on one hand we see Kareena Kapoor enjoying the taste of success and leading a peaceful life with her dedicated boy friend Saif Ali Khan, on the other hand Bebo’s sister Karisma Kapoor, seems to undergo some problems in her married life with Sanjay Kapur. After her second child Kiaan Raj Kapoor, Karisma who stayed at Delhi after marriage, came to Mumbai to meet her mother. She come home to take rest and give some quality time to her mother. But the truth behind the visit to her mother’s place was a different matter all together. She was having problems with her husband Sanjay. Babita guessed the cold relation of her daughter with her husband and discussed the problem with Karisma. Babita came to know that it was the lack of time which has led into miss-communication between the couple. She, asked Karisma to call up her husband Sanjay and clear all the differences between them. Karisma obeying her mother took the step to communicate with her husband and tried to clear all the miss understandings between them. After a long chat the couple decided give their marriage another chance. Well soon we will see Kareena in zero size figure in her upcoming film titled Short Term Shaadi, while Sanjay is willing to give more time to Bebo’s sister to make their shaadi a long term one. Hope the chemistry works out between them.

Well its not clear what was exactly the reason behind the break up but the new Bollywood prince charming and the tall and the beautiful Deepika where a sweet little pair. Anyways, grannys say that people don’t forget their first love especially girls and maybe that’s the reason why Deepika is still having the tattoo that reads ‘RK’ meaning Ranbir Kapoor on her nape. She was recently spotted with a new one on her ankle but she was wearing sandals so this bee couldn’t see it properly so can’t describe what it was exactly. But the girl is not ready to get ‘RK’ out from her nape confirming what the old grannies say about first love. Pehla pyaar pehla gham……. No not really as the lass was in high spirit answering questions to the scribes. Hmmmmmm forgiven not forgotten Ranbir … ah… Deepika?

KJo back with ‘Koffee With Karan’ Season 3

INDIANTIMES

Amitabh Bachchan speaks on

Kaun Banega Crorepati B

ollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, who is shooting for Malayalam movie Kandhar with Mohanlal is making comeback on small screen. He is all set to rock the viewers with his popular quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati. He extensively Oneindia about the show. Here are the excerpts of the Amitabh Bachchan’s interview.

Karan Johar will soon begin work on the third season of his popular chat show Koffee With Karan. The shooting begins in September this year and there are quite a few surprises and changes in the show. KJo promises that this year, the koffee will definitely taste spicier. Read on for your koffee fix... Three changes in KWK this time?

We have been putting our heads together trying to make a few changes in the format. The segments will change along with new and interesting combinations. There will be a bit of shuffle in the format to make it edgier. KWK will also get a new set decor. Director Ravina Kohli (Kunal Kohli’s wife) who had been directing the earlier episodes of KWK won’t be with us this time and will be sorely missed. What else? The coffee mug which had been blue and green in the last two seasons, might go red this time...

August 2010 Edition

You are back on ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ (KBC) though on a different channel this time. What made you agree to host the show for a third time? Sony TV now has the rights for KBC and they approached me. They shared with me their research and the changes that they wished to incorporate in the show and I agreed. Earlier you also hosted ‘Bigg Boss’. Doesn’t television eat into the precious time that you have for movies? No it does not. The schedules get planned accordingly. Film and Tv get different slots and it all works out nicely. I was not shooting any film during the time of ‘Bigg Boss’ and its very likely that for KBC also the film shoot shall begin only after the season is over. But even if it doesn’t, adjustments in dates would be made and incorporated. KBC changed the relationship between cinema and television forever. No other game show since then has had the same impact. Do you in some ways feel responsible for bringing cinema closer to the homes? That is too large a credit that you put on my shoulders. Innovators of the game show, its presenters and broadcasters and then the public are the ones that decide what shall work and how. I was merely a fortunate bystander that climbed on to the KBC joyride. I am happy that it worked. This is not the first example of such a fusion. It has happened many times before, both here and in the West. You’ve done two seasons of KBC. How would season 3 be different?

The format of the show is binding by contract, but yes there are some innovations that will be different from the earlier one. The channel does not wish me to disclose this right now. They wish to bring that up at an appropriate time. Anil Kapoor played host on KBC in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. Do you think he played the role well? Yes, he was very good!!

Its host and anchor is 10 years older and wears glasses!!

You’ve so far done only non-fictions on television. Are you at all tempted to take up one of the many soaps?

Your connection with the Tv audience has proved to be exceptional. How do you intend to carry that connectivity forward this time?

There has not been a concrete proposal to do a soap, but if there were to be one I would not mind considering it.

ndian sportspersons want to win a medal at home in the Commonwealth Games and in chasing their dream, some of them are cutting corners and taking recourse to illegal means. As the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee is busy meeting deadlines and answering allegations of corruption and diversion of funds, the stakeholders seem to ignore a ticking bomb that may embarrass the country at the mega event to be held from October 3-14. The issue is of rampant doping by sportspersons that has left India humiliated at the Asian Games, Olympics and World Championships this decade. There has been a spurt in sportspersons, including power lifters and bodybuilders, caught for doping in the country with a whopping 101 positive cases detected in the first seven months this year. According to information provided by the Sports Ministry in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, the total number of positive cases in 2009 was 76 while it was 66 and 44 in 2008 and 2007 respectively. Though one reason for such high detection could be the setting up of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NDA) and the increased number of tests being conducted, the high number of positive cases also indicates the rampant doping in the year of Commonwealth and Asian Games because for each positive test there could be many that have gone undetected.

of finances. The programme will also make sure that cricketers learn how to speak English, handle the media during press conferences, and conduct themselves in public. BCCI’s contracted players will undergo this training. With recent infamous off-field behaviours of the players, it seems that the programme will be of great benefit for them.

Isaac gets green signal from ICC The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed it had received New Zealand and Australia’s nomination of Alan Isaac to be vice-president of the global governing body from 2010-2012. Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket put forward Isaac after their previous nominee, former Australia Prime Minister John Howard, failed to get sufficient backing from the ICC board for a post which will eventually see the holder become president of the international body.

BCCI rejects Delhi 2010 for funds India’s cricket chiefs turned down a request from beleaguered Commonwealth Games organisers for a grant of one billion rupees (22 million dollars). Games organiser Suresh Kalmadi earlier this month asked the cash-rich Indian cricket board (BCCI) for financial assistance as costs escalated for the Games to be held in New Delhi from October 3-14. “The committee expressed its inability to agree to the request of the Commonwealth Games to be the lead partner by donating one billion rupees,” a terse BCCI release said, giving no reasons.

Isaac, an experienced cricket administrator and former captain of Wellington’s 2nd XI, has been the chairman of New Zealand Cricket since 2008.

SACHIN TENDULK A R

You want blood with that book? A special edition book on Sachin Tendulkar with a signature page made from his blood, costing £49,000 or $75,000 or Rs 35 lakh. Fan fanaticism or ingenious marketing? Sachin Tendulkar is all set to break another record, only this one doesn’t seem to be on the right pitch. A luxury book publisher is bringing out a special edition biography on him which will have unpublished family pictures and previously unprinted thoughts about his career, weigh 37 kg and have all 852 pages edged in gold. And the icing on the cake will be a special ‘signature page’ which will be made from the Master Blaster’s blood! (His blood will be mixed into the paper pulp to get a red resin tint.) There will just be 10 copies printed of The Tendulkar Opus ‘blood edition’ and each book will cost a whopping £49,000! No doubt, Tendulkar is a sporting legend, a cricketing icon, a worldfamous name, but is this taking things a bit too far? Is it a case of fan fanaticism or just a smart marketing ploy?

Sachin Tendulkar (L) talks with former West Indian cricketer Brian Lara during the 2010 Wimbledon Tennis Championships at the All England Tennis Club, in south-west London.

We got Sachin fans and book readers to comment... Vinod Kambli, Tendulkar’s childhood friend This is absolutely justified, after all, it’s Sachin Tendulkar we are talking about. Why just a fan, it would be a prized possession even for a layman. Readers will love it as they will get to know everything about him, considering he’s such a private person, and the fact that his blood will be a part of the book makes it outstanding. It’s not a marketing gimmick, it’s just a brilliant way for a fan to get closer to Sachin. Kapil Dev, former cricket captain I wouldn’t call this book a biography, I’d call it a souvenir. Today’s marketing situation has changed drastically; however, I would not like to comment on the subject until I know more about the contents of the book. Sonia Garware, huge fan of Tendulkar No way, I’d never buy a book like this, even if it’s about Sachin Tendulkar! No doubt it’s a very cool marketing gimmick, but I wouldn’t want anything with his blood on it! I love the game and the man, but I’d be happier not knowing details of his life than spending that kind of money on such a book. Piyush Pandey, adman I wouldn’t call it a gimmick, but it’s definitely a good marketing device. I’m sure the publishers will find 10 people willing to buy the book, Tendulkar has that sort of crazy fan following. People who are fanatic about the game and about him would love to know more about him and his personal life and be the owner of one of only 10 such books in the world.

After scoring his double-century during the second one day cricket match between India and South Africa, in Gwalior, India. It was the first ever double-century in oneday international cricket.

Shobhaa De, columnist-cum-publisher As a publisher myself, I can see it’s a headline grabbing gimmick (albeit in exceedingly poor taste — literally and metaphorically). ‘Anything for instant attention’ seems to be the thinking behind this ‘bloody’ strategy. Tendulkar’s Opus has already generated enough controversy to make it a bestseller. Though at $75,000 a pop, you really have to be a very wealthy, die-hard Sachin fan to buy the tome. One would expect such a stunt from a rock star — Lady Gaga — perhaps. But not from an iconic cricketer of Sachin’s stature. Mandira Bedi, cricket anchor Sachin Tendulkar is a legend but the idea of his blood in a book is more gory than something to be cherished. If the book had to have a part of him in it, then probably a couple of strands of his hair would be better!

Sachin Tendulkar waves as he arrived on Centre Court at the 2010 Wimbledon tennis championships.

August 2010 Edition

Gaurav Kapoor, IPL anchor I think it’s a bit much. Sachin’s given enough sweat and blood to the country already. I think this gimmick is to cash in on America’s craze of vampires and the Twilight series.

COLDS AND COUGHS AYURVEDIC TREATMENT

(SWASA AND KASA)

>> Dr. C.R.S. Kumar

A

ccording to Ayurvedic Medicine recurrent Colds and Coughs (SWASA AND KASA) are usually a Kapha (water) disorder. They are mainly caused by the accumulation of mucus, or by irritation to the mucus membranes of the respiratory tract. The modern science do not regard cough as a disease but the rather consider it as only a symptom of an impending respiratory disease or disorder or a manifestation of some cardiopulmonary distress. CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS The common symptoms of colds and coughs are a running or blocked nose, sneezing repeatedly specially when exposed to cold air or by drinking cold drinks, a sore throat, cough, congestion, headache and sometimes a low fever with body pains. Anorexia, laziness and difficulty in sleeping are also seen when the symptoms become severe. According to Ayurvedic Medicine Colds and coughs are very common problems and are caused by aggravation of Kapha Dosha. It may sometimes be caused by a weak digestion. When the food we eat is not fully digested it changes into mucus, which in Ayurvedic language is known as Ama (TOXINS). This mucus or ama mixed with circulation reaches the respiratory system and causes colds or coughs.

Other causes are exposure to cold or humid condition and cold air. Exposure to hot and cold condition alternatively within a short period and exposing the body to extreme temperature condition also aggravates the condition. The most common instance of this is drinking ice cold drinks when we are hot and perspiring. Eating hot and cold food at the same time e.g. ice cream with hot coffee is also not advised. It is also generally caused at the time of change of season. Eating foods that increase Kapha like milk products, foods heavily fried in oil or ghee (clarified butter) will accelerate the problem. DIFFERENT TYPES Kapha cough involves expectorating thick or slimy mucus of clear or white color and an infrequent cough. Distaste for food, feeling of heaviness, and sweet taste in the mouth with excess saliva or feeling of nausea will be symptoms. The patient will complain of cold, and the lungs may be full of phlegm. Pitta type cough involves expectorating yellow phlegm, sometimes streaked with blood. There will be a burning sensation in the throat and chest, along with fever, thirst and dryness of the mouth. The mouth will taste bitter or pungent.

Vata type cough is usually a dry cough with little expectoration. Cough will be frequent, painful and with a particular sound. Pain in the chest and heart, or a headache is typical. There will be dryness in the mouth, hoarseness and perhaps nervousness, anxiety or insomnia. . AYURVEDIC TREATMENT Treatment involves anti-Kapha diet, avoiding dairy and other mucusforming foods. Ice, cold water and fruit juices should not be taken. Hot spicy herbs, particularly long pepper, dry ginger or chitrak as a milk decoction, are helpful. Treatment is much like that for Pitta type colds. Ghee can be used to soothe the throat. Powdered lotus seed with honey is helpful. Licorice combination can be used. Treatment involves anti-Vata diet. Anti-cough and demulcent herbs are prescribed, licorice, marshmallow, comfrey root, shatavari and ashwagandha. Formulas include Cardamom combination and Draksha, plus formulas indicated under the common cold. IF STILL SYMPTOMS PERSISTS PLEASE TAKE AN ADVICE FROM AN AYURVEDIC DOCTOR. AYURVEDIC TIPS 1. Cold foods, cold drinks, ice cream,

sweets, fried foods, milk products like cheese, creams, yoghurt etc. should not be taken. 2. Hot milk without fat can be taken if boiled with a pice of crushed ginger. 3. Half a teaspoon of turmeric powder mixed with the milk is effective. 4. Sweet fruit juice should also be avoided, Breads, meats, nuts and pastries are not advisable. 5. It is good to take a light warm diet like boiled or steamed vegetables; vegetable soups and fruits

6. Spiced teas, herbal teas and other hot drinks are beneficial. 7. Sleeping during the daytime should be avoided. 8. Taking cold showers, exposure to cold winds, fans, air conditioners etc. should be avoided You may ask your personal query to Dr Kumar via Email drsathi@aurahealth. com.au or by phone 9440 5091/ 0402 282 745 regarding any of your health problems. High-heel wearers can’t walk on flats O

ne would think wearing a pair of high-heeled Jimmy Choos was painful for your ankles, but many a time, habitual stiletto wearers feel discomfort while walking flat footed. In a study, Marco Narici from Manchester Metropolitan University and Robert Csapo, from the University of Vienna, Austria, compared two groups of women – one regular high-heel wearers and another who didn’t. Csapo and Olivier Seynnes, another researcher, then compared the muscle fibre length in the women’’s calf muscles. The results revealed that the high heel wearers’’ muscle fibres were 13 percent shorter than those of the women who wore flat shoes. Narici explains that when you place the muscle in a shorter position, the fibres become shorter. However, by shortening the fibres, the muscles would have to contract more to shorten by the same length, and if this was the case the high heel fans’’ calf muscles could no longer function optimally and thus would produce less force than the flat shoe wearer’’s calf muscles. Also, the high heel fans’’ tendons were much thicker and stiffer than the flat shoe wearers. The Achilles’’ tendon compensates for the shortened muscle fibres in the calf muscle, allowing the fashion addicts’’ calf muscles to function optimally as they walk, but causing discomfort when walking on flat feet because the tendon cannot stretch sufficiently.Narici suggests stretching exercises regularly to avoid the soreness when women kick off their high heels. The study is published in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

Physiotherapist Sammy Margo, from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy says, “My advice would be to wear a variety of heel heights, so that the calf muscles have a bigger range of movement.”

Trash the crash diet T

hinking about going on a crash diet to lose a few extra kilos before you slip into that form-fitting outfit? Well, do not fall into the trap of believing that crash diets are miracle diets that produce an immediate — and permanent — windfall in weight loss. With the body not being supplied with enough calories, it slows down its metabolism and gets tuned to needing very few calories for its functioning. The decreased metabolism may be maintained for months, even after you resume a normal diet, making it more likely that you’ll put back all the weight that was lost, in addition to some additional kilos.

INJURIOUS TO HEALTH Crash diets imply a serious lack of concern for proper nutrition, and differ from outright starvation only slightly. The body is deprived of essential nutrients, making it susceptible to health problems. Very soon, your skin loses its glow, hair tend to fall and nails become brittle. Long term dieting can put the vital organs at risk as the lean tissue around them and eventually their own muscle is burnt to produce energy for sustaining life. Such diets are hard on your mental and emotional health, too. The sudden changeover from normal eating routine to a stricter diet can wreak havoc with your mood. You may get irritable, feel depressed and dizzy and want to sleep more to conserve energy. Those who stick to such diets for long may even become uncoordinated and frequently suffer from anemia, osteoporosis, kidney failure, heart attack and stroke, apart from having reduced life expectancy.

LOSE WEIGHT THE HEALTHY WAY The only sensible way to lose weight is to shed it gradually. You should eat regular meals, pairing them with regular exercise. Focus on limiting the portion sizes, and always choose healthy foods, including plenty of vegetables, fruit, skim milk and yoghurt, enough of dals and whole grain cereals, and only small amounts of sugar or sugary foods. Stick to a moderate fat intake — remember that while a low fat diet is okay, a fat-free diet is not. Drink plenty of water and control alcohol intake.

No time to work out?

Get fit in a flash Our recommendations, if you want to get fit but don’t have much time, are to change the way you do simple things. » Forget the car for short journeys, walk or cycle instead » If you get a bus or a train, get off one stop early and walk the rest of the way » Use the stairs instead of the lift or escalator » Try a few gentle exercises while you watch TV » Do your housework at a faster pace If you have a little bit of time to slot in some exercise, just half an hour a day of moderate activity, enough to get you warm and slightly out of breath, is all it takes. » Walk briskly for thirty minutes, five times a week » Garden for an hour a week » Walk your dog, or a friend’s » Go for a walk in your lunch break » Set your alarm clock half an hour early and start your day with exercise

ADENOIDS

stuffy nose resulting in breathing through mouth rather than nose, snoring and trouble getting a good night’s sleep, during sleep, lack of concentration during the day, trouble swallowing, swollen glands in the neck, ear problems, the inability to pronounce certain consonants, including ‘m’ and ‘n’, mucus from nose and a typical ‘pinched nose’ quality to the voice and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (this is condition in which along with snoring the child goes through brief periods of pauses in breathing during sleep. This can lead to low oxygen levels with daytime sleepiness).

H o m eo p a t h i c H e l p Raj Kothuru

The adenoids consist of lymphatic tissue and helps protect against upper respiratory tract infections.

WHAT ARE ADENOIDS? The adenoids are lymph nodes located in the back of the throat behind the nose. Lymph nodes located in the neck, armpits, chest, abodomen, groin etc make up part of the lymphatic system, which helps the immune system to fight infection. The adenoids are part of the ring of tonsils at the top of the throat. They sit high on each side of the throat behind the nose and the roof of the mouth. They are not readily visible like tonsils.

Germs normally enter the body via nose and mouth. However, they are filtered and trapped by hairs and mucous in the nose. Adenoids contain white cells that make antibodies to help destroy these bacteria. CAUSE FOR INFECTED ADENOIDS: Primary cause of infected adenoids is caused due to recurrent infections. Adenoid tissues temporarily swell as they try to fight off infection. They can get overwhelmed by a bacterial infection that they become infected themselves. In most cases, the swelling goes off by its own while medical treatment is necessary in some cases.

ROLE OF ADENOIDS IN CHILDREN: Adenoids and tonsils often surface together in discussions. Adenoids are situated above the tonsils. Just like Tonsils, Adenoids form part of the ‘first line of defence’, which protects the body from infections.

SYMPTOMS OF AFFECTED ADENOIDS: Since adenoids are constantly in the path of germs (micro-organisms), infections are common. Infected adenoids swell, which can reduce the airflow through the nose.

Adenoids do important work as infection fighters for babies and little kids, especially when they are very young. As the children grow older, the reliance on adenoids as a guard against infection decreases as the body develops other forms of defences. Nevertheless, adenoids are a very important part of our body.

Most of the times, children do not get treatment for the swollen adenoids themselves unless they start to cause other health problems or symptoms. Symptoms include dry and sore throat, enlarged tonsils, breathing difficulty,

CONVENTIONAL METHODS: Use of pain killers, antibiotics and if swelling persists, surgical removal of adenoids (and tonsils if deemed necessary) is the standard practice. Removal of adenoids should be the last option. HOMEOPATHIC HELP: Homeopathy offers a very safe and effective way to cure enlarged adenoids and also tonsils and can possibly avoid surgery in most cases. Homeopathic opinion is that these organs are an important part of the body’s defense system and should not be removed. Infact, Homeopathy and other systems of natural medicine believe that no organ, considered useful or not should not be removed if possible. If nature has given it to us, there should be a purpose for its presence.

Homeopathy takes a two point approach, pain, inflammation or symptom handling, to provide quick relief and recovery for the child so that he or she can get on with their day without struggle and constitutional handling, where the child is treated on a totality basis to strengthen its immune system as a whole so that the adenoids themselves become stronger and are better equipped to wade off infections. A wise option would be to consider Homeopathy in any case where there are recurrent infections and health conditions. You may ask your personal query to Raj Kothuru (Homeopath) via email drraj@ aurahealth.com.au or phone 0425 761 826 / (03) 9478 8649 regarding any of your health problems. You will be offered authentic information and an opinion as to what best can be done pertaining to your ailment.
