Air India starts hourly flights on Mumbai/Delhi sector

esponding to the increase in demand for flights because of the holiday season, Air India, on Monday, launched a schedule that has flights operating between Mumbai and Delhi (both ways) every hour. “Passengers can travel on the Mumbai/Delhi/Mumbai sector every hour starting from 6am in the morning to 11pm in the

evening daily,’’ said a release issued by the airline. The Mumbai /Delhi/ Mumbai sector of the airline is operated with Airbus A-320 and A- 321 aircraft. The hourly flight operation amounting to 18 flights on this route was started. ``Passengers can avail of mostly direct flights and a few one stopover flights on this sector,’’ the release said. Air India flies to 63 domestic stations and 27

international destinations. However the Air India hourly flights have not bought down airfares on this route. The reason is that there has been no increase in the number of flights operated by Air India on this route. The airline has stuck to its winter schedule, but earlier, like all other carriers, Air India too bunched its Mumbai-Delhi-Mumbai flights with a spike in flight frequency during

the peak hours of morning and evening. The difference now is that the airline has evenly spread out its flight schedule throughout the day to ensure one departure every hour from each of these airports. Air India one -way airfare on the route for the weekend and for next week started at Rs 8,600. The cheapest fares for a Mumbai-Delhi flight was being

offered by low-cost airlines and was in the range of Rs 8,200. But a few weeks ago, during the current peak season, the fares on this route were very dynamic with the cheapest fare starting at Rs 9,000-Rs 11,000 on some days, especially for early morning flights. The Air India scheme may get the lowest airfares on the Mumbai-Delhi route average out at Rs 8000-Rs 9000.

Angioplasty for Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit

elhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit underwent angioplasty for a blocked artery on Tuesday morning. Dr Ashok Seth, her cardiologist and chairman, cardiac services at Fortis Escorts Heart and Research Institute, performed the procedure. Angioplasty is the process of propping open a blocked artery in the heart using a metallic mesh tube called a stent. “She had breathlessness for the past three-four days. A CT scan suggested she had a blockage. An angiogram showed a 90% block in the right coronary artery and a stent was put in without wasting any time,” Dr Seth said. The procedure was performed at 8am on Tuesday. Dikshit’s immediate family — her son, daughter, daughter-in-law and sister — were present during the procedure. “We deliberately asked all her official staff to stay away, since that would have added stress,” he said. She was shifted from the critical care unit to the regular hospital room within a couple of hours. According to the doctors attending to her, she has been recovering well. “Though she is talking, we have advised that all officials and politicians be kept away. But,

knowing her...she will get back to her official duties from the hospital itself,” said Dr Seth, who has been her personal physician for more than a decade.

The CM has a history of heart ailments. In 2006, she had undergone a procedure called stenting. In 2001, Dikshit underwent an

open heart surgery after a blockage was detected in her arteries during a routine health checkup. The bypass surgery — con-

ducted by a team headed by cardiac surgeon Dr Naresh Trehan, now the CEO of Medanta — the Medicity, Gurgaon, and cardiologist Dr Seth — took five hours.

set up a sophisticated network that could pull out data about any terrorist suspect within a matter of seconds, was P Chidambaram’s pet project when he was home minister. But when Chidambaram returned to the finance ministry, the project lost its most ardent supporter, and consequently,

the momentum. Currently, enmeshed in bureaucratic and inter-departmental power struggles, it runs the risk of falling on its face. The NCTC - the most adventurous project of the three - has been shoved into the deep freezer after chief ministers protested that the Centre was giving itself

the right to arrest terrorists anywhere in the states. And, the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems, which seeks to link 15,000 police stations in the country, hasn’t taken off either. Sahni, executive director at the institute for conflict management, attributes these no-shows to the absence of technical expertise within the police leadership. “Our vulnerability remains despite some half-hearted, hesitant steps,” former UP and BSF chief Prakash Singh said, counting NSG hubs, creation of NIA and a coastal security plan as steps forward. “But poor police strength is the weakest link in the entire security architecture.” According to the Bureau of Police Research and Development’s latest report, all the states put together had just about 10,000 more policemen in 2011 than in 2009, though home ministry officials say that recruitment - initially sluggish due to lack of adequate training facilities - has picked up remarkably. Also, going by the number of VIPs making a beeline to get themselves armed police guards, the security and intelligence measures put in place after 26/11 haven’t beefed up confidence in public security arrangements.

‘Shivaji Park is still an option for Thackeray memorial’

hief minister Prithviraj Chavan might have publicly vetoed Shiv Sena’s demand for a Bal Thackeray memorial at Shivaji Park, but Sena leaders continue to keep it on their list of options. Sources said the Sena is actively considering the park, along with the Mayor’s bungalow located across the road from it. The Municipal Kreeda Bhavan, a civicrun gymkhana opposite Shivaji Park is another contender. The final decision will be taken by Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray after the 13day mourning period is over, Sena leaders said. Bal Thackeray passed away on November 17. Mayor Sunil Prabhu denied

Delhi govt eyes 15% quota for poor in private schools

he Delhi government is set to propose an additional 15% reservation for children from poor families in most private schools in the city. According to the proposal, which will be presented before the high court once it’s cleared by the chief minister, the quota will be applicable to admissions made from class II to XII. The reservation, if passed by the court, will affect 394 private

recognized schools in the capital that have been allotted land at concessional rates by government agencies. The proposal is in response to a high court order. The schools, according to lawyer Khagesh Jha whose PIL resulted in the proposal, include “all the big names you can think of”. As per their lease deeds, these schools were obliged to reserve seats for economically weaker

sections (EWS) although there was no unanimity on the extent of the quota. “In response to a PIL about schools not complying with obligations in the lease deeds, the high court had issued an interim order in 2007 that had fixed reservation at 15%,” says a senior official in the department of education. However, in 2011, a new set of rules came into the picture with the Right to Education

Act. RTE enforced reservation of 25% but that was only at the entry level. Admissions till Class I are now covered by RTE. Many schools, now reserving 25% seats for EWS students at entry, were under the impression that the RTE’s provision nullifies whatever obligations were spelt out in their respective lease deeds. The list of schools that have received land includes all major school chains such as Modern School, Delhi Public School, Bal Bharti and Springdales, as well as most other well known institutions — Vasant Valley, Sanskriti, St Columbus, Mother’s International and Sardar Patel, to name just a few. “The RTE provides for 25% reservation at entry point. The high court asked us to come up with a policy that combines the RTE admission guidelines with the lease deed obligations that have never been superseded or repudiated legally. We are not in a position to ignore this and following the court’s interim order, the reservation for EWS on admissions after Class I has been made 15% across the board,” said Kiran Walia, Delhi’s education minister.

Walia added that one-third of the 15% will be for the school’s own staff and the rest for outsiders. The decision is awaiting the approval of chief minister Sheila Dikshit and once cleared, will be presented before the court. “The confusion was the result of a DOE notification dated January 1, 2011 that stated it was ‘in supersession’ of the notification based on the 2007 high court order that had upheld the validity of obligations mentioned in the lease deeds. But following this new notification, schools started fulfilling the reservation requirements of RTE alone ignoring the lease deeds,” said Jha. Another petition filed in 2011, this time by a parent, resulted in the high court directing the department in September 2012, to make the “necessary policy decision” within eight weeks. Jha, who, along with Ashok Agarwal, had filed the petition in 2011, says that number of students sometimes doubles in higher classes. “We have found through RTIs that number of seats increase manifold, typically after class six. Entire sections are added. Now for new admissions they’ll have to have reservations,” says Jha.

Where is India, we need it, ASEAN says

s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrives in Phnom Penh on Sunday, he is likely to hear a common refrain in this part of the world: India is sorely needed here, but India is too slow. It’s a critical time for ASEAN countries -- they are struggling to remain cohesive and stay relevant. They are caught in a bruising territorial dispute with the big Heavy in the region, China. And now the even bigger US is sailing into their waters and telling them how to stand up to China, with its help. US defense secretary Leon Panetta

told everyone “we are deepening our military engagement with our allies and partners in this region in order to ensure that we are able to promote security and prosperity in this region for many years to come.” For many, India is a natural balancer in this region. India struck roots here hundreds of years ago, and there are signs all around. But in the current strategic debate roiling the region, India is a peripheral presence. India’s only statement so far has been to endorse the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and mineral resources in the

troubled wats of the South China Sea. In a joint statement with the Chinese, India also emphasized its stakes in the Asia-Pacific. That lone position by the MEA, India believes may have absolved it of all other responsibility. With $80 billion in bilateral trade, India needs a louder ASEAN policy. “ASEAN needs India now, not 10 years later,” says Kavi Chongkittavorn, a regional expert, of the Jakarta-based ERIA group. “we need strategic support from India about the way forward. How do we deal with the advent of big powers and still retain our relevance?” there is much talk about “ASEAN-led” and the “centrality” of ASEAN, but everyone knows its in danger of being swamped. China watchers here say Beijing is likely to get more tough in the next six months, as the leadership transition will only be completed by next March. This is the time, they say, India needs to ramp up its engagement and support in this region. But there is no Indian voice that is heard here. Seoung Rathavy, secretary of state of the Cambodian foreign ministry, said 200 senior officials have gathered here to discuss the agenda of the key summits. She told journalists, “implementation of a declaration

of conduct on the South China Sea is crucial for political and social stability of ASEAN.” The South China Sea disputes would be discussed at every meeting in the several summits that will be held here. The Chinese are unlikely to agree to the declaration of conduct on the issue, regarding it as their sovereign territory. Indonesian experts, familiar with their country’s position, said very little forward movement would be expected. For many, the US “pivot” is a mixed blessing. While many countries here are happy to get external support as they deal with the rise of China, there remains some uncertainty about whether the US would actually come to their help. For many, Vietnam and Philippines have been “burnt”. In 2011, the US stopped short of fully backing up these countries during their respective stand-offs with China on the South China Sea. Cambodia needs the kind of defence interest from India like Vietnam has. India should offer joint exercises with everyone in this region. Most of them have old naval fleets, and even with modest means, India can help upgrade them. In fact, India needs to work

harder with naal cooperation with all the ASEAN countries. In 2011, Indian naval vessels paid port calls to many in the region before ending up in Shanghai. That should become a run-ofthe-mill affair. A look at the map will show how India, with its still superior navy, can successfully block off the Malacca Straits for the Chinese if a conflict breaks out in the Himalayas. For India to carry out a successful blockade, it needs all the littoral countries on its side. India, many ASEAN analysts here believe, should openly reiterate its position on an issue which will deeply affect India’s own future. There is a sense that India is piggybacking on the US. Even Cambodia, which is believed to be close to China, is crying out for an alternative partner. The India linkages are for all to see, from the Ganesha idols to the Mekong river. “Connectivity” is India’s mantra but it’s China that’s putting stakes on the ground. China is doing more on the Mekong river and China is building the KunmingSingapore links, while India’s trilateral highway to Thailand through Myanmar will take many more years to realise. The wasted opportunities are stacking up.

Delhi court on Wednesday dismissed the bail plea of two senior Zee Group editors arrested for allegedly demanding Rs. 100 crore for not broadcasting reports on a Jindal group company’s role in the coal scam. Zahid Butt, a local trader who filed the petition on behalf of the organisation, claimed

that RAW, India’s external intelligence agency had funded the Bhagat Singh Foundation to raise the issue. He claimed the Foundation lobbied the Dilkash Lahore Committee that recommended the renaming of the roundabout. Senior JuD leader Maulana Amir Hamza, who heads the Tehrik-e-Hurmat-e-Rasool, has said the group will not allow places to be named after Hindus, Sikhs or Christians. “Pakistan is a Muslim country and such ideas cannot be appreciated,” he said recently. The JuD wrote a strongly worded letter to district administration chief Noorul Amin Mengal and other government officials, warning them not to rename the roundabout after a “Hindu freedom fighter”. The Dilkash Lahore Committee had rejected all objections and asked authorities to notify the new name for the roundabout without delay. In a related development, civil society activists have filed two applications in the Lahore High Court, asking it to make them parties to the case challenging the renam-

Man featured in Aamir Khan’s show on honour killing murdered

ive months after a young couple appeared on Aamir Khan’s television show, Satyamev Jayate, and talked about the threat to their lives because they had married without their parents’ consent, the man was shot dead near his village in western Uttar Pradesh on Thursday evening, allegedly by his wife’s brothers. Abdul Hakim, 28, and his 26-year-old wife Mehwish, both Muslims hailing from families with different social standing, had been living under the protection of an NGO in Delhi since May last year. About 15 days ago, Hakim and his wife, who is nine months pregnant, went to meet his ailing mother near Adoli village in Bulandshahr district. He was shot there, while on his way home from the local police station. The couple, who were neighbours at Adoli, ran away together two years ago after marrying secretly in June 2009. According to Mehwish, her family was opposed to the match because Hakim was poor and belonged to the ‘lower’ Fakir community. Ha-

kim’s father was earlier allegedly killed by Mehwish’s family in the village, although it was shown as suicide in police records. “They would not let us live in peace and now they have taken their revenge,” she told “The couple was scared even before coming to the show,” Aamir Khan told reporters in Jaipur. “We didn’t force anyone to come to the show. The incident is highly unfortunate and shameful.” UP police, meanwhile, have spun an elaborate theory saying the killing was an act of “personal enmity” going back to the time when the couple was in Delhi. But Mehwish and her Delhi-based shelter-providers, Love Commandos, said it was a clear case of murder involving her brothers. Bulandshahr circle officer Lal S Yadav said Hakim was a victim of a family feud that had its roots in Delhi. “The girl’s family had come to accept the marriage. Nothing indicates this murder is linked to the couple’s marriage,” he claimed. Yadav added that Hakim’s nephew, Salman, had entered into a brawl on June 6 and the alleged killers wanted him to take back the police case lodged against them. “Hakim’s death was a result of this feud,” said Yadav. The couple, after a 12-year courtship, had secretly married on June 5, 2009. They kept living with their respective parents till Mehwish’s family fixed her marriage for November 11, 2010.

The couple then eloped on October 29. Till then, exchanging letters across a brick wall was the only source of communication between the two. Mehwish’s family then announced a bounty on the couple’s capture. In May 2011, the pair started living in a shelter in Delhi provided by Love Commandos, an organization that works to eradicate ‘honour killings’. This was the first time they had returned to their village, where Hakim also had a police case lodged against him of kidnapping Mehwish. The nation became aware of the couple’s struggles when they were featured in Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate on June 3. “On June 30, the National Commission for Women ordered UP police to protect the two. But this directive was ignored. They asked Hakim to come down to Bulandshahr to record his statement. When he refused, they never contacted him again,” Sanjoy Sachdev, chairman of Love Commando, said. The area SSP, however, offered to review his security. Meanwhile, a girl was born to the couple bringing fresh hope that relations between the two families would normalize. But that was not to be. “I didn’t know people of my own village had arranged for weapons to kill us. I am the next target,” a shocked Mehwish said. Hakim’s family had moved to Bhargardi village, 2km away from Adoli. But his father, Abdul

Hafiz, refused to leave his ancestral house and stayed back. On July 6, 2011 Hakim’s nephew Salman visited an ailing Hafiz to know about his well-being and on his way home, he was allegedly assaulted by Mehwish’s relatives. When Salman reported the matter to the police, a noncognizable report was lodged. Enraged over the police case, the accused allegedly reached the house of an ailing Abul Hafiz, hanged him upside from a tree right outside his house and assaulted him in full public view. When Abdul Hafiz’s wife Shahooran, who had come to stay with her ailing husband, intervened, she too was assaulted. Hafiz died hanging from the tree. The police, however, saw the incident as suicide. The couple was on the run when Mehwish gave birth to a baby girl who was now a yearand-a-half. In August 2012, when Mehwish got pregnant for the second time, she reached

Bhargardi village to stay with Hakim’s family for the delivery. Hakim used to visit her once or twice a week. On November 20, Hakim visited Mehwish when he was informed that people were on the lookout for him. Hakim lodged a complaint with the local police the same day but no action followed. On Noveber 22, he was walking back after buying medicines for his wife when he was intercepted by three persons who shot him dead in public view around 4.30pm. Aamir Khan said he is aware of the incident and would speak to the authorities to ensure the safety of the rest of the family. He described the murder as “disturbing and unfortunate”. “I will speak to government authorities in UP to help and ensure the family is safe. The culprits must be brought to book. The case must be registered on basis of facts,” the actor said.

NRI hedge fund manager freed on $5 million bond

n Indian-origin hedge fund portfolio manager, charged with participating in one of the “most lucrative” insider trading schemes ever, has been released on a five million dollar bail after he appeared in Manhattan federal court here. Mathew Martoma, 38, appeared in a brief court hearing before US magistrate Judge James Cott and was informed of his rights as a criminal defendant. Martoma, who was arrested last week at his home in Boca Raton, Florida, did not enter any plea and the judge set a next court hearing of December 26. Martoma has been charged with using material, non-public information that he received from a doctor on the clinical trial of an Alzheimer’s disease drug to make profits and avoid losses for his hedge fund in an amount totaling approximately 276 million dollars. The US Securities and Exchange Commission have also filed a civil insider trading case against him on similar charges. A Stanford University graduate, Martoma is the son of Indian immigrants and was born Ajai Mathew Mariamdani Thom-

Palghar again: Teen grilled over Facebook post

he controversy over the arrest of two Palghar girls over a Facebook had not even begun

to subside, when another youth from the same area in Thane district near Mumbai was questioned by police on

Wednesday for an allegedly “abusive” Facebook post against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray.

He was eventually let off following investigations. Sunil Vishwakarma, 19, a high school dropout is currently

pursuing a computer course. On Wednesday afternoon, a group of MNS activists brought him to the local police station claiming he had posted abusive literature against their chief Raj Thackeray as well as the Marathi manoos. “MNS workers traced Vishwakarma and handed him to the police. We demand strict action,” said Kundan Sankhe, Thane district chief of MNS. However, by evening it was clear that a fake account using Vishwakarma’s name had been used to post the abusive content. A senior official said Vishwakarma is now the “complainant since he has been victimised”. Acting SP Anil Kumbhare said a case under section 66 A of the Information Technology act has been registered against unidentified persons and police are now trying to trace the guilty. On November 18, two girls from Palghar, Shaheen Dhadha, 21, and Rinu Shrinivasan, 20, were arrested after they posted a comment on Facebook criticising the Mumbai shutdown. Palghar police booked the girls for hurting religious sentiments. Two officers were eventually suspended for the unlawful arrest.

aby Zefram is due in about 20 years, but in the meantime NASA and the Department of Energy are working on something somewhat tantalizing if you’re planning a deep-space probe. Researchers including engineers from Los Alamos National Laboratory have demonstrated a nuclear reactor that could power spaceflight. It’s nowhere near as powerful as NASA’s conceptual

antimatter engine--the Demonstration Using Flattop Fissions (DUFF) experiment produces just 24 watts of electricity. The researchers used a heat pipe to cool a small nuclear reactor and power a Stirling engine, according to the lab, yielding “a simple, reliable space power system.” It was the first space nuclear reactor experiment in the U.S. since 1965. A proposed craft using the system would be powered by a 50-pound hunk of enriched uranium that sits inside a 12-inch reactor core, as the video below illustrates. Having more power aboard a probe could mean more instruments or faster data transmission.

This uranium-based reactor would use nuclear fission energy to power small spacecraft and possibly installations on Mars. Heat pipes -- a cooling technology used in many laptops -- distribute the fission heat to eight Stirling engines that would produce about 500 watts of power. In contrast, the CassiniHuygens probe is powered by 72 pounds of plutonium-238, which generated about 880 watts at its

launch in 1997. The researchers believe the reactor could be adapted to applications such as power plants on the surface of Mars, or more elaborate spacecraft. “The heat pipe and Stirling engine used in this test are meant to represent one module

that could be used in a space system,” Marc Gibson of NASA Glenn Research Center said a Los Alamos statement. “A flight system might use several modules to produce approximately one kilowatt of electricity.” Dilithium crystals it ain’t, but let’s be optimistic.

Aakash 2 to be showcased at UN

he Ministry of External Affairs will go ahead with the planned showcase of Aakash 2 tablets citing it as India’s technology innovation at United Nations, despite allegations of some tablets been purchased off the shelf from firms in China. In an email to ET’s query to India’s UN Mission in New York, Joint secretary at Ministry of External Affairs Syed Akbaruddin replied that India’s UN Mission ‘will go ahead’ with the event despite the allegations. “The decision to unveil the Aakash 2 at the United Nations (during India’s Presidency of the UNSC) was taken after it was confirmed that the device would be formally unveiled by the Hon’ble President of India on November 11, 2012. Hence it will go ahead.” India has the rotating presidency of UN Security Council for the month of November. The device is expected to be unveiled in the presence of UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and other member nations. The MEA spokesperson said that the device was designed at the request of the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India. “Given its cost competitiveness, it aimed to bridge the digital divide by providing access to quality education for all. It was

the successful implementation of this ‘idea’ and such technologies, that we intend to show case, using the platform provided by the United Nations, which is a common practice amongst developing countries.” India’s permanent representative to the United Nations Hardeep Singh Puri earlier this month told media that a presentation on Aakash would be held on November 28, at the UN’s global headquarters in New York. Media and member states would also be invited to the event. Indian Mission may also distribute the tablets to some member states. Aakash 2 got mired into controversies last week after some Indian and global media including ET published reports of how several tablets supplied to the Indian government were picked off the shelf from firms in China by the contracted firm Datawind. ET cited invoices of purchase from firms such as Trend Grace Limited, Kalong Technology Co Ltd and Dasen International Electronics Co Ltd. UK based Datawind denied the allegations. Datawind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli said, the touch panels used in the device were manufactured in Montreal but “were consolidated in Hong Kong or China” for expediency.

Israel ahead of US in race to supply ‘tank-killer’ missiles to India

srael has upstaged the US in the ongoing race to bag the huge deal to supply third-generation anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) to the Indian Army, in a project which could well be worth $1 billion eventually. Defence ministry sources said the plan to go in for the American FGM-148 Javelin ATGMs has “virtually been shelved” because of Washington’s reluctance to provide full military knowhow licensed “transfer of technology (ToT)’’ - to allow India to indigenously manufacture the “tank killers’’ in large numbers after an initial off-the-shelf purchase. Instead, the Army has already completed extensive trials of the Israeli ‘Spike’ ATGM, which like Javelin is also a shoulderlaunched and fire-and-forget missile, under varied conditions in plains, deserts and mountains. “The staff evaluation is now in progress as the next step in the procurement process,’’ said a source. The Javelin imbroglio has once again rekindled long-held fears in the Indian defence establishment about the US not being a reliable longterm supplier of cutting-edge military technology. India also detests American conditions on “intrusive end-user inspections’’

The US has notched up military sales worth over $8 billion to India in the last few years, including mega deals for C-130J ‘Super Hercules’, C-17 Globemaster-III and P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, but they did not involve licensed production in India. At present, infantry units are making do with secondgeneration Milan (2-km range) and Konkurs (4-km) ATGMs, produced by BDL under licence from French and Russian companies, which are wireguided and do not have fire-andforget capabilities.

he Centre has told the Supreme Court that deaf and dumb government employees could not be equated with blind and physically handicapped ones, who face much more difficulty in commuting and are hence given double the transport allowance paid to other employees. Citing a health ministry office memorandum, the government said it was advised that “it would not be just and fair to equate the disability of deaf and dumb persons with those of blind persons in so far as grant of transport allowance facility is concerned”. The ministry in the 2003 memorandum said that deaf and dumb people generally do

not require physical assistance for commuting to and from their residence to the place of duty. However, the proposal to give deaf and dumb employees enhanced transport allowance was again considered in 2006. The Centre said the Sixth Central Pay Commission did not make any recommendation on this aspect while revising the transport allowance. “As per the recommendation of the commission, as accepted by the government, statusquo continues regarding the categories of physically disabled employees eligible for transport allowance at enhanced rate,” it said. “In view of the aforesaid position, it is not considered

feasible to extend the benefit of enhanced transport allowance to hearing impaired employees,” the government said. However, solicitor general R F Nariman sought 12 weeks time from a bench of Justices K S Radhakrishnan and Dipak Misra to make a fresh attempt to find an amicable resolution to the grievances of deaf and dumb employees. A PIL filed by ‘Deaf Employees Welfare Association’ had alleged that the government remained unmoved despite several representations by hearing impaired employees seeking enhancement of transport allowance to bring at par with that paid to blind and physically handicapped.

Anil Kumar Sinha, who won a crore on the show, has taken the initiative to help others get an entry to the hot seat round. “Many contestants are intelligent but lose their confidence due to nervousness in game shows. They are like a champagne bottle, once the cork is opened, the knowledge rushes forth. It took me 11 years to get an entry into the show, yet I didn’t lose patience, whereas others get discouraged and let it go,” says Sinha. He has written two books — one containing general knowledge questions and the other is a compilation of

interviews of other winners on KBC and their journey. Sinha got this idea of coaching aspirants when one of them contacted him to ask for tips. “Vineet from Coimbatore wanted to know how I made it and soon we got chatting on the phone. It wasn’t possible for us to meet in person, so when he asked if I could coach him daily for one hour over the phone, I agreed. I found the idea interesting and soon many others joined. I connect with people on Facebook and later guide them through emails. Two aspirants even come home to take guidance from him.” Sinha is eager to help as many people as possible and three contestants he coached have reached the hot seat. “Many offered money in lieu of my services but I refused them as I have got my jackpot from KBC. Now if I can help others, it would mean much more to me.” He only charges for the two books he has published.

Enjoy a serving of delicious mixed dal Are you tired of eating the same old arhar dal or moong dal day after day? Then it’s time to think of an easy yet delicious mixed lentil dish. You need to have five different dal(s) as mentioned below. Then follow this quick, easy recipe and you will tickle your tastebuds.

Soak all the four dal in water for 15 minutes and then pressure cook it so that the lentils get cooked properly. Allow it to cool. Heat oil and add cumin seeds. After that add the chopped onion and fry it till the onion gets a nice brown colour. Make sure not to overdo it. Add the ginger garlic paste. After that, add the tomatoes and then add the chilli powder and a pinch of turmeric powder. Let the masala get a nice consistency. After that, add the boiled dal. Let it cook for a while. Before taking it off from the stove, add the garam masala. You can garnish it with coriander leaves. This delicious dal goes very well with either roti/rice.

This paper is significant because it looks at that question," he said. Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation chairman Scott Wilson said the study suggested alcohol guidelines for under-18s should be made clearer: "Zero alcohol, full stop."

form of the Supreme are not different. Chanting the names of God is something you can do anytime, anywhere. Suppose you wish to draw water from a deep well but the rope snaps and the bucket falls into the water. How to pull it back from the well? We will have to try all means – fling another rope with hook to snag the bucket in the hope that at least one of the attempts will be successful. Similarly when fall into the ‘well’ of the material world, the Supreme comes to us in the form of various avatars with different name in the hope of ‘hooking’ us to bail us out. Hence chanting the names of God is beneficial. One sure way of ensuring we keep remembering the names of God is to give those names to your children. Ajamil has named his younger son Narayan. At the time of death, the messengers came to take him to the land of death, out of sheer fear he called out the name of his son. Immediately Lord Narayana ensured that Yamaraj’s messenger did not take him away. We should have firm belief. If we have belief we will get everything; else we cannot get it. Have faith. This is darshan shastra.

LIKE ME, VIDYA HAS GUTS TO DO DIFFERENT FILMS: WAHEEDA REHMAN Always willing to take chances, Waheeda Rehman experimented with unconventional roles in films such as Guide and Teesri Kasam. She sees a reflection of herself in Vidya Balan, who has also shown great chutzpah in selecting her films. Asked who among the current lot was like her, the screen legend said: “I’ll say Vidya Balan.” “I also used to choose different movies. I never stuck to one good girl in love (kind of role) and Vidya does the same thing,” Waheeda said. “I had the guts to do Guide. At that time, they told me not to do it because it was a vamp’s role. I did Mujhe Jeene Do and Teesri Kasam. I wanted to take a chance and even Vidya is doing that now,” she said. The graceful 76-year-old thespian follows the same maxim even today. The reason why she has taken up nothing after Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s 2009 release Delhi 6: “The role should excite me. It must contribute to the movie... not just like standing there. That’s not exciting. What kind of role is difficult to say. Even if it is an elderly role, it must contribute. I don’t want to be there for the sake of being there,” Waheeda said. In a 56-year acting career, she gave all-time classics such as Kagaz Ke Phool, Guide, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Teesri Kasam and Mujhe Jeene Do. With no prior experience in acting, she always focussed on her director’s brief. “Whatever acting I

did, it was with the help of my directors and my imagination. I used to do things to the best of my ability. I emphasised on my feelings and not so much on the technique,” she said. The big screen veteran has no plans to join TV. “I got so many offers, but I don’t want to do TV. I was told you get stuck badly if the serial becomes popular. Then the timings and all...I want to have my life at my time,” she said. “If I do one picture (at a time), it is fine... I want to enjoy my life. Currently, I’m enjoying myself. There are so many things to do, I run a house, meet my friends. I do a lot of reading, meditation and I travel,” she said. And she is doing that... meeting friends from the industry regularly for lunch or films. “Nanda, Asha Parekh, Sadhna, Helen...we meet quite often. We go out for lunches or visit each other’s house. We watch movies. Salim (writer Salim Khan) saab and Helen have screenings for all the movies they can get, and all of us watch them together,” she said. The actress has always been fond of her fans but believes that there is a line that should not be crossed. “Sometimes, it bugs you and irritates you. We go to a restaurant and we are eating. People don’t have the sensitivity that they should let us eat. Once we finish, they can ask for autograph or a photograph. Let us be. You are eating, so are we. We don’t want to be disturbed like that,” she said.

ollywood’s ‘khiladi’ Akshay Kumar is back in action to pack a punch with his new outing “Khiladi 786”. The film’s soundtrack has been composed by Himesh Reshammiya. It has seven original tracks and five remixes. First up on the playlist is “Lonely”, whose initial tune sounds similar to Alexandra Stan’s hit number “Mr.Saxobeat”. The song has rap by Yo Yo Honey and, on the Nighm has good whole, theSonu number

dancing beats. There are good vocal inputs by Himesh Reshammiya and Hamsika Iyer. The song is addictive, thanks to Himesh’s nasal touch as he croons “Oh bawariya” at regular intervals during the song. The track has a remixed version too, but that isn’t too great. “Balma” pays tribute to the music of the late R.D.Burman and features sounds from the past. However, it also takes some inspiration from

LMFAO’s track “Sexy and I know it”. It is full of energy and manages to charm the listener with its groovy beat and the seductive voice of Shreya Ghoshal who has good company in the vocals with Sreeram Chandra. Surely a track that can make you hit the dance floor. The remix though is quite ordinary and it is better to stick with the original. The next track “Long drive” starts off as a rock number

with the guitar but suddenly moves into desi beats. The sounds then fuse and it transforms into a hip-hop and rock mix. It’s a daring experiment by Himesh, who has got Mika behind the mike in a different avatar altogether. He is slow, yet his voice doesn’t dilute the track; instead, it allures you all the more towards it. It also has a fun Bhangra remixed version which features dhol and tumbi to make you sway.

Next up is the romantic number “Sari sari raat”, crooned by Himesh. It has a very dreamy and beautiful composition, and will surely strike a chord with lovebirds. It is followed by “Hookah bar”, which has the trio of Himesh Reshammiya, Vineet Singh and Aman Trikha sounding quite celebratory. However, despite some fine music, the song is unable to move the listener. It’s remixed version is passe. The title track gets the smiles back. However, it sounds like a new version of “Hud hud dabangg” with fresh lyrics. Despite the vocals by Vineet Singh, Aman Trikha, Yashraj Kapil, Alam Gir Khan and Rajdeep Chatterjee, the listener is unable to get out of the “Dabangg” mode. There is a racy remix of this one too, but it suffers because of the same trajectory. Last but not the least is “Tu hari peer”, which musically speaking has a lot to offer as Himesh combines qawwali and Punjabi folk to dole out an eclectic mix. Javed Ali, Shreya Ghoshal, Chandrakala Singh and Harshdeep Kaur mesmerise with their voices. Overall, the album is a mixed bag that has some shortcomings, but there are tracks which are capable of making it to the music charts.

More migrants than economic sense

he Gillard Government’s immigration policy is out of sync with the current economic climate, causing many Australians to compete with migrants in the struggle to find work, according to new research. In the most recent report compiled by Monash University’s Centre for Urban and Population Research (CPUR), researchers argue that Australia’s immigration intake is too high. Lead researcher and Head of the CPUR, Dr Bob Birrell, said the report shows that under the current employment conditions, several of

the major visa subclasses need to be culled. “Australia has been in the grip of a boom mentality over the last decade,” Dr Birrell said. “In such booms, government and business enterprises seem to lose the capacity to put claims of economic growth to a reality test – claims such as those from the Australian Workforce and Productivity Agency, which say demand for workers will increase.” Immigration policy settings have been adjusted to accommodate this boom mentality, with the permanent migration program for 2012-13 set

at a record high figure of 210,000. The Government’s 457 temporaryentry visa program is also running at record high levels. “The immigration program is set on full throttle, whereas the net growth of the employed workforce in Australia has slowed to a crawl,” Dr Birrell said. “The net growth in the employed workforce in Australia was just 58,000 between the 2011 and 2012 August quarters. Yet, in the past year, at least 100,000 migrants who arrived found employment in Australia.” The report shows that due to the

current immigration policies, domestic job aspirants are being crowded out, particularly young people seeking to enter the workforce. Australian-born youth unemployment has increased and, as of August 2012, there were 666,830 unemployment benefit recipients, up from 626,969 in August 2012. “The most serious implication of migration for domestic workers is the huge presence of migrants on temporary visas in metropolitan lower-skilled labour markets,” Dr Birrell said. “Though allegedly here for various educational, holiday and cul-

tural exchange purposes, large numbers are primarily in Australia to work.” The research found the current rules regulating temporary entry are excessively generous. Once in Australia, tens of thousands of migrants then extend their presence in the labour market by moving from visa to visa. “There is an urgent need for a review of the temporary-entry visa subclasses, which examines the impact on young domestic workers of the flood of migrants competing with them for available jobs,” Dr Birrell said.

ndia’s consul general in Melbourne Dr. Subhakanta Behera, 50, passed away on 09 November after a heart attack at his residence in South Yarra, leaving the Indian community shocked. The 1987-batch Indian Foreign Service officer is survived by wife Rajashree, son Ananya and daughter Amruta. Dr. Behera’s family wished to cremate him in hometown Bhubaneswar in Odisha, said an official of the Ministry for External Affairs (MEA). “The consulate will facilitate the family’s return to India,” the official said. Dr. Behera, who had a doctorate from Oxford University, was appointed the

Indian consul general to Melbourne in May last year, and since then he has been a popular member of the community. Dr. Behera, along with his family, could be seen at many community events and functions. In his career, Dr. Behera held key postings in Moscow, Washington and London, besides postings in Uzbekistan and Bulgaria. He had returned to New Dehli as MEA joint secretary. Watson has bowled with the red ball in only one match this summer - the Sheffield Shield game in which he broke down after four overs. It is easy to forget how little longform cricket Watson has played in recent times. the top of the order is his primary role within Australia’s Test side. The Adelaide Test marked an unwanted milestone for Watson: it was the 50th Test he had missed since his debut in 2005. Although he might have been left out of some of the early matches for reasons of form or team balance, the vast majority of his absences have been due to injury, and the numbers are staggering when compared with his batting teammate Michael Hussey, who also debuted in 2005 and has played 75 Tests without missing one. But despite the frequency with which he has been sidelined, Watson remains unwilling to consider himself a specialist batsman. In his own mind, he remains an allrounder, and it would take a drastic course of events for him to change his thinking - more drastic, that is, than missing more Tests than he plays. “Not unless something goes very horribly wrong, I wouldn’t want to give up on bowling,” he said. “One part I love of the game - I know it puts more pressure on my body to be able to play consistently but it’s something I just love so much and have loved doing since I was an allrounder since I was a young kid. The ultimate enjoyment for me is to play as an allrounder. Mentally the injury setbacks are frustrating at times, but it doesn’t take away the love of being able to contribute with bat and ball.”

He had a discussion with chief selector Sandeep Patil on Tuesday. “They had a frank discussion, and Tendulkar told Patil that since he is not getting runs, he would like to leave it to the selectors to take a call (on his retirement),” told a cricket board insider. This comes in the wake of the crushing defeat India suffered against England in Mumbai. Tendulkar fell to left-arm spinner Monty Panesar in both innings, scoring only eight runs each time. Vitamin D deficiency among youngsters, which causes such problems, is becoming common these days and is a growing health concern, doctors say?”

ikas Ahluwalia, senior consultant of Internal Medicine at Max Super Specialty hospital, said that vitamin D deficiency among young people has increased over the last couple of years, especially in metros like Delhi. “We have observed a rising number of cases of young people coming with complaints like backache, leg pain, joint pain and lethargy, which relate to vitamin D and vitamin D3 deficiency. It’s a cause of concern,” Ahluwalia said. The trend is mostly seen in metros, like Delhi, he added. “What is even more worrying is that children as young as 16, who are in the growing stage of their life, are coming with such problems,” Ahluwalia said. Paediatrician Anju Virmani of the Indraprastha Apollo hospital agreed. “Vitamin D deficiency is becoming very common these

But after two days, her other leg too had a fracture, removing our doubts, because it meant that her bones were very brittle because of vitamin D deficiency,” she added. Exposure to sunlight is the biggest source of vitamin D something that we consciously avoid under various pretexts. “We are a nation obsessed with fair skin although we are naturally blessed with more melanin which is meant to protect, unlike our Western counterparts who also have higher incidence of skin cancer. So people here put lots and lots of sunscreen and sit behind tinted glasses that blocks UV rays. This is not always healthy,” said Ashu Agarwal, consultant in internal medicine at a private hospital in Delhi. Pollution too blocks the sun’s

rays, she added. “Children these days hardly play outside. They are running from school to tuitions and then when they play, it’s mostly video games in their rooms. So there is not enough exposure to sunlight,” Ahluwalia said. “Also, the common trend in all the kids with vitamin D deficiency is that they don’t take milk or milk products. So where do you get your calcium? Fast food has added to the problem. The normal range of vitamin D is 30 (nanogrammes per millilitre of blood) and at times we get children with 3-4; so that’s

Australia and New Zealand Head and Neck Cancer Society, Associate Professor Ben Panizza said that the current spike in cases could be a direct result of the sexual revolution of the sixties and seventies. “Oropharyngeal cancer, which is cancer of the tonsils and tongue, is on the rise. Ten years ago we were seeing around one patient every fortnight,” the Courier Mail quoted him as saying. “Now we encounter about two cases a week,” he said. The cancer is divided into two types - caused by the human papillomavirus infection and those caused by heavy drinking and smoking. “Previously most cases we saw were caused by the latter, and since it typically takes years of alcohol and tobacco abuse to cause this type of cancer, patients were generally elderly,” Prof Panizza said. “Now we are seeing younger patients, around middle age, who are developing cancer following infection with the human papillomavirus, which many people usually associate only with cervical cancer,” he said. According to Prof Panizza, the virus had a long lag phase, so it is often decades between exposure to the virus and the appearance of symptoms. “As a result, it is highly likely that the current increase in cases is directly linked to changes in sexual behaviour seen in the sixties and seventies,” he added.

Researchers from Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre, Bethesda, Maryland, attempted to determine the effect of stress reduction technique, the 10-minute Tension Tamer, on improvement of stress levels and sleep parameters in 334 patients in a heart health programme. After a 30-minute introductory workshop, subjects were given instruction and guided opportunities to practice 10-minute Tension Tamers over the course of four 30-minute

visits with a stress management specialist, according to a Walter Reed statement. This brief technique, encouraged at bedtime, involves deep breathing and imagery using the subject’s personal preference. Of the patients, 65 percent improved their perceived stress by 6.6 points; while those not improving showed worsened stress levels by 4.6 points. Improvers also reported better sleep quality, decreased sleep latency, and decreased fatigue. These findings were presented during CHEST 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held in Atlanta, Georgia.
