17 years’ jail for Indian who beat wife to death in Melbourne

A

n Indian national, who brutally beat his wife to death after abusing her for years, was today sentenced to 17 years in jail by the Victorian Supreme Court. Sukhmander Singh, who pleaded guilty to murder of his wife Mohinder Kaur, was jailed to 17 years to serve a minimum of 13 years and six months sentencing. While announcing the verdict, Judge Terry Forrest said the accused had no remorse for his actions. Mohinder was beaten to death with a wooden stake by Singh on the Valley Lake Boulevard at Niddrie on May 7, 2009. The accused followed his wife Mohinder who came to Australia from India in 2008 because of years of physical abuse and being falsely accused of having affairs by him. The couple had four children and their daughter Sarabjit Kaur, 21, was studying in Melbourne.Sarabjit had arranged for her mother to obtain a visa and five months later in March last year she also arranged for her father to join them after he assured of a good behaviour. Justice Terry Forrest said that Singh’s conduct towards his family improved significantly after he arrived in Melbourne in early March. However, his behaviour deteriorated and last May he attacked his wife while taking a stroll on Valley Lake Boulevard in Niddrie suburb in Melbourne’s northwest. “What followed then was a brutal conclusion to your wife’s life,” Forrest said. “Mohinder was crying and told Sarabjit that you had taken a wooden stick

Mohinder was beaten to death with a wooden stake by Singh on the Valley Lake Boulevard at Niddrie on May 7, 2009. The accused followed his wife Mohinder who came to Australia from India in 2008 because of years of physical abuse from the ground. She heard what sounded like a crack, and last words she heard her mother utter were: ‘Neena, your father is killing me,” Forrest told Singh. Singh’s daughter Sarabjit testified that as long as she could remember there was fighting and argument between Singh and his wife, the Age reported. “The children would stay outside the house crying while you set about beating their mother,” Judge told Singh. “For cultural reasons I am unable to comprehend, these beatings were not reported to the police,” Forrest said, adding “Sarabjit states that over the last few years the fighting and beatings became considerably worse. You would kick your wife, hit her and use objects to inflict pain upon her.” The court heard Singh would abuse his wife almost every day and the physical beatings would happen almost once a week. Kaur had given evidence that she moved to Australia in 2007 to get away from her father but her mother could not leave because of her younger brother and sister in India.

Concern over Australian Visas Australia asked to spare existing Indian students from new law

A

round 15,000 Indian students in Australia could be forced to return home under a revised skills list that is set to become the mandate for visas and permanent residency to that country from July 1. Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi has urged Canberra to exempt existing students from the new list. Australia has slashed the existing Skilled Occupations List (SOL) from 400 skills to just 181 for vocational courses and jobs, which are prerequisites to acquire permanent resident status and student visas. Ravi, who visited Australia recently and raised the issue, is confident the Australian government will not turn down his plea, though he said it hasn’t committed to his request to exempt the existing students from the new skills list in order to let them finish with their courses and for permanent residency. ‘I asked the Australian ministers to implement the list prospectively and not retrospectively… I have asked them to give our students two and a half years’ time to find a sponsor and employment,’ Ravi told , after returning from a weeklong trip to Australia where he met Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, Trade Minister Simon Crean and Immigration and Citizenship Minister Chris Evans. Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) Joint Secretary G. Gurucharan told that 60 percent of the Indian students

‘I asked the Australian ministers to implement the list prospectively and not retrospectively… I have asked them to give our students two and a half years’ time to find a sponsor and employment,’

Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi

will not be affected by the revised list, and of the remaining, 30 percent will be given a transition period of two and a half years to either find a job or sponsor to acquire permanent resident status. He said those in trouble are the remaining 10 percent, or around 10,000 students, who arrived in Australia on student visas with neither vocational nor language skills only intending to pick up jobs and secure permanent residency. However, Ravi is confident that the authorities will not let down the students. He said: ‘I am confident and hopeful that Australia will not disappoint our students though they have not committed to us on anything… They will look into the matter.’ Gurucharan said the ministry had reasoned with the Australian authorities that despite prior knowledge that these

students lacked vocational and language skills, Australia had issued them student visas and so now they cannot be forced to leave. ‘But they also had a good argument in their favour that when they gave these students visas, it was only a student visa and so under the new list they cannot be given permanent resident status. But still the minister (Ravi) spoke on their behalf to the Australian authorities and we are hopeful,’ he added. Also affected by the new SOL are at least 5,000 other students. They were hit when the Australian government ordered closure of 34 of its privately-run institutes in the last few months for failing to meet the laid down standards. Many more institutes are expected to follow suit. The High Commission of India in Australia had early this year warned students planning higher studies in that country of the existence of several sub-standard institutions which do not meet the standards set by the Australian federal and state governments. The state

government in Victoria is currently auditing 41 privately-run educational colleges. Further, the federal government has mandated that all education providers and institutions delivering to international students need to re-register by Dec 31, 2010, so that the government can ensure they meet the mandated standards. During his visit, Ravi also held talks with the Victoria Premier John Brumby and asked him to take initiatives to help the Indian students continue with their courses in recognised institutes without being affected by the new list and also help them find employment under the state-sponsored immigration policy. ‘I tried to impress upon them that our students should not lose out on opportunities, they have spent a lot of money and energy to get there but when institutes are being shut down by the government, what will our children do? I am hoping they won’t disappoint our children,’ Victoria Premier Ravi added. John Brumby

Bin Laden hunter Gary Faulkner will be back soon

Osama bin Laden is hiding in tribal areas of Pakistan: CIA

W

orld’s most wanted terrorist Osama bin Laden is hiding in Pakistan’s rugged tribal areas, CIA chief said today, even as he claimed that the al-Qaeda is probably at its weakest point since 9/11 with only 60-100 militants left in Afghanistan. “I think the estimate on the number of al Qaida (in Afghanistan) is actually relatively small. I think at most, we’re looking at maybe 60 to 100, maybe less. It’s in that vicinity. There’s no question that the main location of al Qaida is in tribal areas of Pakistan,” CIA Director Leon Panetta, told ABC News in an interview. Panetta said the al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is in deep hiding in the tribal areas of Pakistan, but did not give any further details. “He is, as is obvious, in very deep hiding. He’s in the tribal areas in Pakistan that is very

July 2010 Edition

difficult. The terrain is probably the most difficult in the world,” he said. “That’s all we know, that he’s located in that vicinity. The terrain is very difficult. He obviously has tremendous security around him,” Panetta said. “I think what’s happened is that the more we put pressure on the al-Qaida leadership in the tribal areas in Pakistan and I would say that as a result of our operations, that the Taliban (al Qaeda) leadership is probably at its weakest point since 9/11 and their escape from Afghanistan into Pakistan,” he said. But having said that, the more we continue to disrupt al-Qaida’s operations, and we are engaged in the most aggressive operations in the history of the CIA in that part of the world, and the result is that we are disrupting their leadership, he added.

Gary Faulkner

“He is, as is obvious, in very deep hiding. He’s in the tribal areas in Pakistan that is very difficult. The terrain is probably the most difficult in the world,” We’ve taken down more than half of their Taliban leadership, of their al-Qaida leadership and we just took down number three in their leadership a few weeks ago, he said. We continue to disrupt them. We continue to impact on their command-and- control and the

NATO forces continue to impact on their ability to plan attacks in this country, Panetta said. If we keep that pressure on, we think ultimately we can flush out bin Laden and Ayman-al-Zawahiri and get after them, Panetta said. It has been a while that Panetta has intelligence on Osama, he said. “I think it almost goes back to the early 2000s, that in terms of actually when he was moving from Afghanistan to Pakistan, that we had the last precise information about where he might be located. Since then, it’s been very difficult to get any intelligence on his exact location,” he said.

The “Rocky Mountain Rambo” says expect a sequel. A Colorado man arrested earlier this month in Pakistan who told police there he was hunting Osama Bin Laden said today he will resume his search soon. “Absolutely,” Gary Faulkner told reporters in Los Angeles while on layover for his flight to Denver. And when can we expect the bearded vigilante to pack up his pistol and sword and head to Pakistan? “You’ll find out at the end of August,” he said. For now, though, the 50-year-old ex-con and construction worker with ailing kidneys just wants to rest. He might also need to save some dough. Faulkner said he sold his construction tools to pay for his previous six Bin Laden hunting trips. The adventures “took a lot of money and a lot of time,” he said. Faulkner left Colorado on May 30 and was arrested in the woods of northern Pakistan on June 13. Pakistani police initially laughed at Faulkner’s claim he was hunting Bin Laden, but were later convinced by his story. “We don’t get scared by people like this, we scare them, and that’s what this is about,” Faulkner said of Bin Laden and Al Qaeda. “We’re going to take care of business.”

anick Sorcar, who has made a name for himself in North America as a laser and animation artist, is being honoured with the publication of a book on his art. The new book comes very shortly after another on his life and work by an Indian American author. In the past few months, the “World of Manick Sorcar where art becomes magic” has won critical acclaim, with many here praising the book as a long awaited recognition of Sorcar’s life and art. Wellington Webb, a former mayor of Denver, Colorado, where Sorcar resides, noted his “unparalled contribution to the skyline of Denver”. Colarado governor Bill Ritter added, “The world of Manick Sorcar is a compelling one of versatility and triumph and represents the true entrepreneurial spirit of the West.” “In the world of laser displays, there are many producers and few artists,” said Patrick Murphy of the International Laser Display Association, adding, “He blends

the technical skill to wrangle insubstantial light photons, and the artistic skill to create sublime drawings.” Sorcar combines his passion for animation with his day job as an electrical engineer. His company has illuminated the Denver international airport, fitness centres in Japan and a palace in Saudi Arabia. According to the book’s author Roma Sur, Sorcar has been able to seamlessly merge three different fields - science, fantasy and art “because of his sharp, analytical mind that understands the science behind every piece of art and his childlike imagination that knows no boundaries. Combine that with the magic in his genes, and that is the secret of his mind-boggling creations.” “He is a rare personality whose left brain works hand in hand with the right brain - one does not dominate the other. While assisting his late father, (the legendary magician P.C. Sorcar) he realised his flair and interest in lighting engineering. He can create art with a chicken wire, rocks, spices,

Tadka daal’ or chicken tikka masala will not taste the same in Britain due to the annual cap on migrants announced by Home Secretary Theresa May on Monday 28 June 2010. The new step to curb immigration will prevent Indians restaurants from hiring experienced chefs from the Indian sub-continent. Owners of Indian restaurants say that changes to immigration announced earlier had already made it difficult to hire chefs from India. The new annual limit will make the situation worse, they say. May announced Monday an annual limit of 24,100 for nonEuropean Union professionals to be allowed into the UK until April 2011. The move could hit thousands of highly skilled Indian professionals who will not be able to take up jobs in Britain after the government announced the new cap. Dharmesh Lakhani, a partner of the popular Bobby’s Indian restaurant in Leicester, said: “It’s always been a problem. You can have people train up as chefs in the UK, but it’s not the same as having a chef who has worked in restaurants in India and know about all the different styles of cooking”.Leicester businessman Jaffer Kapasi was “cautious” about the handling of the issue by the government as it affects other businesses too.

two new warships T

o strengthen coastal security and Navy’s capabilities to counter threats emanating from the sea, two water jet-propelled fast attack craft (WJFACs) were commissioned into service here on Tuesday. Commissioned by Andhra Pradesh Governor E S L Narasimhan, the state-of-the-art high-speed ships, INS Cankarso and INS Kondul, are the fifth and the sixth of ‘Car Nicobar’ class of fast attack craft, 10 of which will be built for the Navy. All the ships would be fully indigenous and the project is expected to be completed at a cost of Rs 617 crore, Navy officials said. The highly-manoeuvrable ships, built by defence shipyard Garden Reach Ship Builders and Engineers in Kolkata, are capable of carrying out operations in shallow waters and can operate in both day and night conditions, they added. The WJFACs are likely to replace Navy’s old Sea Defence Boats, they said. The ships are close to 50 metres in length and can move at speed of 30 knots and operate with four officers and 45 sailors on board. Post-26/11, several initiatives

Governor ESL Narasimhan addressing the officers and men at the commissioning of, INS Cankarso and INS Kondul, two Water Jet Propelled Fast Attack Craft (WJFACs) of the Indian Navy, in Visakhapatnam

have been taken by the government to enhance maritime security and offshore defence to prevent terrorists from using the sea route to attack Indian targets. The ships will be based in Goa and tasked with the role of detecting, locating and destroying small, fast-moving enemy surface craft engaged in covert operations, a Navy spokesman said. “In addition to their primary role, the ships will be tasked with the role of policing, anti-smuggling

and fisheries protection in India’s coastal waters. In the long run, these ships could help in ensuring stability in India’s maritime zones of responsibility,” the spokesman said. INS Cankarso is named after an island near Goa while INS Kondul derives its name from an island near Nicobar. INS Cankarso is commanded by Arun Bahuguna and INS Kondul by Shashidhar R Patil. The two craft are equipped with a reverse-osmosis technology drinking water plant and sewerage treatment plant.

India joins global club against

financial frauds I

ndia has finally gained membership to the Financial Action Task Force, a global body that chalks policies to counter financial frauds and provides members access to information on suspicious transactions in countries including Switzerland, China, the US and the UK. The decision to include India as the 34th member country was taken during a FATF plenary session in Amsterdam from June 23-25 and marks the end of India’s nearly decade long wait for admission. During this period, India served as an observer at FATF. “India is now a full member of the FATF. The step is a major development for India and the tax enforcement authorities in dealing with terror financing and comabting money laundering,” a senior Finance Ministry officer said. The Union government and financial enforcement and intelligence agencies of the country like the Financial Intelligence Unit, Enforcement Directorate, Central Economic Intelligence Bureau and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence would be able to

exchange financial information from member countries, the officer said. Other agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Intelligence Bureau would also be able to route their requests of information for suspicious ransactions and individuals through proper channels, he added. Present members include Switzerland, the United States of America, China and the United Kingdom. The membership will also bring increased responsibility on Indian financial institutions and banks to comply

with better business practices and strict adherence to reporting of financial transactions including suspicious ones. The FATF discussed and adopted the mutual evaluation report of India. India has been an observer of the FATF since November 27, 2006 and was assessed as an observer country in the context of their request for FATF membership. The FATF recognises India’s efforts and commitment to bring its Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Combating Financing of Terror (CFT) system intoline with FATF recommendations. The executive summary of the mutual evaluation of India will be published on July 1, 2010, the statement added. Last year, retrieving black money stashed away in tax havens became an election debating point in the country. Germany, in May this year, handed over data relating to Indians holding unaccounted money in Liechtenstein-based LGT Bank.

Ranjita to pen ‘how to survive a scandal’ CHENNAI: Three months after the telecast of the controversial tapes that allegedly showed her with godman Nithyananda in a compromising position, actor Ranjita is busy working on a selfhelp book, tentatively titled ‘How to survive a scandal’. And the book draws on her experience. “I am writing this based on my experiences in the past six months, and there are so many people out there feeling traumatised and suicidal,” the actor told TOI in an exclusive interview, the first after the controversy broke. “My book will help people come to terms with personal problems, and I am in talks with a couple of publishers,” she says. “I am also writing a fiction, aimed at the youth of today, but the one drawn from my experiences will come out first,” says the actor, pushing back her smartly cut hair. ‘Autobiography Of A Yogi’ and other books by renowned spiritual gurus line the shelf in her living room. “I was always a bookworm and you move from fiction to philosophy. I am especially fond of Indian spiritual writing,” says the actor, who came to Chennai early this month. While struggling for the right word or the perfect phrase, she also took time to

meet up with CB-CID officials in connection with the Nithyananda case. Asked why she went underground when the controversy broke, Ranjita goes quiet for a minute. “I do not want to hang on to the past. I want to move on. I was very hurt and went through stress and trauma. I decided to hibernate for a while,” she says. “The media was writing so many negative things about me, and some were fabricating interviews. Things piled up one on top of the other. You need time to deal with such things, to reconcile, but people think actors do not deserve that kind of time,” she says with a rueful smile. She quickly adds that her husband, sisters, parents and inlaws were pillars of strength. She has a short role in ‘Raavanan’, but she is yet to watch the film.

Its official: Men look at women’s breasts

W

omen often say that men tend to ogle at their breasts and their face is the last thing they notice, and now a scientific study has found evidence to prove them right. Scientists have found that almost half - 47 per cent - of men first glance at a woman’s breasts. A third of the “first fixations” are on the waist and hips, while fewer than 20 per cent look at the woman’s face, reports the Daily Mail in UK. In fact, breasts are not only the first thing men look at, they also glance at them for longer than any other body part, revealed experts. Many believe that the reason behind such male tendency could be evolutionary, as women with larger chests and slim waists - such as Jennifer Hawkins, Lara Bingle and Rachael Finch - have higher levels of the female hormone oestrogen, indicating greater fertility. But the researchers conceded that there could be a more prosaic explanation.

“Men may be looking more often at the breasts because they are simply aesthetically pleasing, regardless of the size,” the Daily Telegraph quoted them as saying. Subjects tested by researchers from New Zealand’s University of Wellington were presented with six images of the same woman, digitally altered to increase or decrease the size of her bust, waist and hips. The scientists recorded which areas men looked at first, the number of times they looked, and how long their gaze lasted, using cameras and mirrors to measure tiny eye movements. “Eighty per cent of first fixations were on the breasts and midriff. Men spent consistently more time looking at the breasts and also made significantly more fixations upon them than other regions,” the study concluded. It also found that men began to gaze at the “components of the hourglass figure” within 0.2 seconds. The research also discovered that few glances were directed at the arms, lower legs and feet.

Women prefer holidays to sex

Taking your lady for a trip away from home will certainly earn you some brownie points, because heading off on holiday is a far bigger turn-on for women than sex. A trip away topped a poll to find the most exciting things in a woman’s life, followed by becoming a mum. Romping with a loved one was third, followed by a pay rise and backing a winner on the horses in fifth. Conducted by horseracing promotion body Racing For Change, the study surveyed 4,000 housewives. “We wanted to poll women to find out what in life most excites them, and we’ve found that it’s a whole range of things,” the Daily Star quoted a spokesman as saying. “From sex and pay rises, to winning money on the horses

and romantic nights away, there’s lots to excite the lives of the nation’s women. But escaping the humdrum of daily life and relaxing and sunning yourself by the pool on holiday topped the list,” added the spokesman. Rounding up the top 10 were romantic nights away, their wedding day, Christmas Day, a girls’ night out and passing the driving test. Seven in 10 of those polled agreed that “the best things in life are free”. However, a whopping 83 percent admitted that they could do with more excitement in their life.

Is your Facebook profile under scrutiny? It’s the new-age arranged marriage, and Facebook may well make or break the deal. As prospective brides and grooms savvy up, it’s not just about being a ‘good cook’ or having a ‘handsome pay package’ — chances are your Facebook profile is also being scrutinised by the ‘other side’ to know you better. “Whenever a guy or his family gets in touch with my family, one of the first things he does is add me on Facebook. There have been times that everything seemed to be going well, until the guy would chance upon a picture of me partying or something, and get thrown off! It sounds so regressive, but it still happens,” says HR consultant Prerna Sharma (name changed), 27. Girls’ families aren’t lagging behind in the matrimonial spy game. “After things got serious between me and this guy, my mother asked my friends to add him on Facebook to check if he has put up pictures of himself smoking or taking drugs. She feels it shows the true face of a person,” says Umang Gupta, 23. Marriage counsellor Kamal Khurana says it’s ‘only natural’ that people will spy on the other person’s profile before marriage. “But some people create fake profiles and flirt with the guy or girl to see if they reciprocate. Though a person’s social circle says a lot about them, one shouldn’t take decisions based on that.” However, not everyone’s keen on the advice. “People keep an eye on their partner’s profile when they’re dating. Why not before marriage?” asks Rajat Saxena, 28, an engineer.

Music Director: Himesh Reshammiya Lyricist: Sameer Singers: Alka Yagnik, Jayesh Gandhi, Himesh Reshammiya, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Sonu Niigaam, Suzanne D’Mello and Shreya Ghoshal Rating:

E

ither it’s because “Milenge Milenge” is releasing after a delay of five years or Himesh Reshammiya wanted to take inspiration from bygone decades - whatever it might be, the soundtrack of this Kareena Kapoor- Shahid Kapoor-starrer has old-fashioned songs, barring one or two. The album offers five originals and five remixes. It starts with Himesh singing “Kuch toh baaki hai”. He has sung the slow-paced song in his signature style and the composition has a heard-before feeling. The track is neither bad nor brilliant. The song has two more versions - one a bright mix and the other a remixed version that is faster in pace. Next in line is the title track “Milenge milenge”, which shows some promise. Sung by Himesh and Shreya Ghoshal, it has haunting music and strong orchestration that generates interest. It is similar in style to Himesh’s composition “Dur na jaana” from the film “Humraaz”. This song too has another

version which is not very different from the original. The second version has been voiced by Alka Yagnik and Jayesh Gandhi. Then there is “Tum chain ho”, a slow romantic track sung by Alka, Sonu Niigaam and Suzanne D. Mello. The rendition starts with English lyrics and then moves on to Hindi. It does make an impact especially with Sonu’s soulful voice. “Tum chain ho” also has an unplugged version which is a great combination of right composition and impressive singing. With just the sound of a guitar in the background, the love song exudes a tranquilizing effect and is nice and hummable. Himesh goes right

with this one. Up next is “Ishq ki gali”, a reminder of the bygone era. This track has Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Jayesh Gandhi behind the mike and it is also quite oldfashioned in its approach, music and style. It also has a remixed version which is ordinary. Finally, we have Alka rendering “Hare kaanch ki chuddiyan”. It doesn’t suit today’s scenario at all. The vocals, music and lyrics are not in sync with the current trend. Hence the song falls flat and doesn’t strike a chord with the listener. On the whole, the album offers just one-two hummable tracks.

Shakira to rock Bollywood ‘Waka Waka’ girl

A

fter Akon for Shahrukh Khan’s Ra.1, it is now the Latin American sensation Shakira’s turn to rock in a Bollywood song. The number, a frenzied dance track to be filmed on the South African model Candice Boucher for the film featuring the IPL owner and entrepreneur Sachin Joshi, will be recorded in the next couple of months. Shakira, is no stranger to India. She had performed live in Mumbai and other cities back in 2007 and has repeatedly expressed her desire to be a part of the Bollywood film industry. Says a source, “Sachin

Joshi, who’s helming and starring in the project, is in touch with Shakira and she has agreed to sing for SalimSulaiman. The lyrics would be in English with a smattering of simple Hindi. It won’t be a duet like the Kylie Minogue song in Tony D’Souza’s Blue. It’d be a Shakira solo dhamaka instead.” Composer Salim of Salim-Sulaiman confirms it. “It would be a very sensuous, cabaret kind of a song.”

Namaste, addab Africa: Salim Salim merchant can not get over his FIFA experience. The music composer who recently performed in the Opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup, says it was a life time experience and he was both proud and emotional of representing his nation. “I really can’t put that feeling into words. It was an emotional moment for us to be the only ones from the music industry in India to represent our country at such a grand event. I went up to the stage and saw the huge stadium packed with over 80,000 people. I was really thrilled but was also confused as to how should I start and then I thought that ‘namaste, adaab’ would just be perfect to introduce ourselves,” said Salim, of the Salim-Suleiman duo who were the only two from the country to perform in the ceremony. About the song that he and his partner especially composed for the ceremony, Salim was very nostalgic. The composer duo paid a tribute to Africa, through their song. “It was a song that was

dedicated to South Africa. Look where have they reached and what they have achieved after their long struggle. We all have read many painful stories about the country and now that very country is hosting such a huge event. We also incorporated the word football in the lyrics, after all it was the opening ceremony of a football world cup tourney.” Salim hopes to organize collaboration between the India music industry and the world. “I want to bring India on the world map as a musical nation and do something global with the best artistes from across the world,” he said.

Desi social media user is predictable!

T

hey network online when they’re home, at work and in between. A survey on use of social networking sites found that 30.6% of users participating in it access them from their mobiles apart from their home and office computers. The average number of hours spent on social networking sites networking is two per day; 89% users join these sites to stay in touch with friends and 80.4% follow friends for photographs, says a recent survey. The Indian social media user is anything but predictable. Twitter (despite an increase in social media use from mobiles and work computers) is only the fourth most popular site, beaten by a wide margin by one that is targeted specifically at business networking. The blogosphere enjoys the endorsement of netizens too with almost 70% of social media users spending at least half an hour every day on blogs. Most look for information and would prefer companies to do their promotion on blogs. The survey conducted by Indiabiz News and Research Services (INRS) dispels another myth. Conducted among 350 users (15-45 years of age) based in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore, the survey found that contrary to popular belief (which has led companies to open accounts and software and marketing firms to start social media wings), brand promotion on social media in India is severely limited in its impact. Only about 15% trust the information provided. A good many users maintain multiple accounts on different social networking sites; while a majority is in it for friends, more than half have joined for business or professional reasons; and though not many in number, there are even those, included in the survey, who operate their accounts from cyber cafes, friend’s homes and college labs. And every survey and study has predicted a bright future for online brand promotion in India. 89% users join networking sites to stay in touch with friends 80.4% follow friends on these site for sharing or viewing photographs Users spend an average of 2 hours daily on these sites 30.6% of users access social networking sites from their mobiles 70% of users spend at least half an hour every day on blogs. Only 15% users trust brand promotion online 33% are uninterested and 63% don’t engage with communities, groups or fan pages.

than 80 years. The Watch House is located adjacent to the Old Melbourne Gaol. While not a part of the actual tour package, you’ll still have the chance to tour the Gaol. The Gaol is one of the most famous of Melbourne’s landmarks and has housed prisoners such as the notorious Ned Kelly. When visiting the Gaol you’ll have the chance to view the execution chamber and some of the existing cells. Melbourne crime tours are among the most popular bus tours in the region. Each year thousands of holiday travelers, backpackers, and even locals set out to explore the attractions that are often spoken of only in whispers. But every city has its underside and Melbourne crime tours give you the chance to experience Melbourne crime first hand. Once you have completed your tour you’ll understand why visitors say that this is no ordinary sightseeing excursion. This is an experience that will stick with you for awhile. Melbourne crime tours are a unique experience that gives you the chance to get up close and personal with Melbourne crime scenes. You’ll never forget it. A Melbourne Crime Tour is a great way to explore the heart of Victoria. Try a Melbourne Crime Tour and explore the murky underworld of Melbourne.

Imagine if... one day you were arrested and taken to the City Watch House. Would you be frightened... Excited... Curious... Intimidated? What would the arresting police officers be like? How would you react to being searched, to sleeping in a cramped cell with people you don’t know, to lose all liberty? What rights would you have as a prisoner? Duration: 30 minutes The former City Watch House operated as Melbourne’s central custody centre or ‘holding place’ for people arrested and awaiting trial. The Watch House experience now offers a rich learning opportunity where students become active participants in a unique encounter with the justice system as they are processed following being ‘charged with a crime’. Between 1913 and 1994 the City Watch House was the point of transition between Melbourne’s community and the justice system. Incarcerated within its walls, were an ever-changing community of individuals charged with offences ranging from public drunkenness to murder. Students actively explore this confronting place and its people from a number of different perspectives through role-play, multi-media interpretation and self-exploration. Students will be ‘arrested’by a Charge Sergeant and processed through the lock up, experiencing an authentic environment left largely unchanged since the last police and inmates left. Students will also encounter sound points and multi media imagery that can be both confronting and informative.

Wander around the 18th century observatory, also designed by the enlightened Jai Singh, then head for the Palace of the Winds, a pink sandstone façade, five floor high but one room wide, where ladies of the Court watched the world without being seen. Ride an elephant to Amber Fort, the former royal palace stretching on a ridge out of town. Look out for the glittering hall of mirrors, the red audience hall and the house of glory overlooking the lake and its summer palace down in the valley. Walk through the back streets and discover the haveli, the traditional painted houses which are the hallmark of Rajasthan. They may be neglected at times but each one is a gem. Top Things to Do and See around Jodhpur Visit the massive Meherangarh fort and palace, perched on a rock with superb views across the Blue City of Jodhpur. See the elephant-proof gates, the handprints of widows

who died in sati and the howdah collection and unique exhibits in the museum. Book a jeep safari and ride across the arid plain beyond the city. Meet a farmer or a carpet maker, a potters’ family in their traditional home, maybe taste some camel milk and learn all about life on the edge of the desert. Stop in Ranakpur, south of Jodhpur, and relax in the beautiful Jain temple, open to the breeze. It’s an oasis of white marble, with over 1000 carved columns, pinnacles, tinkling bells, offerings and pilgrims whispering prayers. Udaipur, a Must in Rajasthan’s Top 10 Things to Do Explore the City Palace, its courtyards, galleries, temples and royal quarters draped in frescoes and mirror work. Enjoy the mosaics in the Peacock Courtyard and the view over Lake Pichola and the Aravalli hills. Shop for hand-woven textiles, painted wall hangings, wood and terracotta items, silver jewellery and more in the bazaar or in the Shilpgram craftsmen village. The venue holds an annual fair showcasing the culture of Rajasthan. Take a boat trip on Lake Pichola, see the exclusive Lake Palace Hotel, formerly royal summer residence, and watch the sunset from Jag Mandir island.

How to Pick your Bottle of Wine ? You plan to buy wine whether for a party or just for yourself, you need to know the ways of picking up the right selection. Although, the choice is more personal than routine or scientific, there are still some general tips as it is called the three P’s: Preference, price and pairing. Thus, mastering these tips shall help you in the long term.

3 P’s Rules To Choose

Price: The purchasing power is without doubt an important factor in judging what you can (or cannot) purchase. Earlier, good wine was expensive and nothing came below $30 while you can get the same in present times for $15 or even less. Contact a reliable wine dealer for suggestions within your purchasing power.

Preferences: They generally differ from person to person, however in the case of wine, it needs to be based on the meal combination and the company you are having. Plenty of wines with their own distinct tastes, vintage, contents and

country of origin exist; hence, each has a specific usage.

ones’ (Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Muscat dessert).

Hence, in a get together party, go for the ‘Safe Wines’ (white or/and red) which do not have heavy effects, use ‘Starter Reds’ like Pinot Noir, softer Merlot for people unaccustomed to heavy wines, and ‘Gewurztraminer’ is the favorite for a white wine.

If you are an adventurous type and would like to experiment, take the help of wine experts or a good wine dealer to guide you in the various interesting wine combinations which you have not tried earlier.

If new, try out these tips according to your preferences; ‘Dry White wine’ (Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, or Sauvignon Blanc)’ ‘Reds’ that are simple and not fullbodied (Pinot Noir, Merlot or Gamay), More complex wines (Syrah/Shiraz-from Australia, California Cabernet Sauvignon, or Zinfandel) and the ‘Sweet

Pairing: This is an important factor in choosing the wine, since wines generally go well with some food combinations and one needs to check out the winefood combinations. Noting the contents of the food as to what you shall be using: fruits or spices; red or white meat; herbs-

fresh/dried and their types and any other which shall influence your choice. For instance, red wines pair well with heavy food better than white ones, which are more suitable for the lighter meals. However, there are no hard and fast rules as it really depends on your choice as each individual is unique so shall be his/ her tastes in terms of food and wine. Thus, the food-wine pairing is more personal (99%) than scientific (1%).

ollywood’s leading ladies Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra were not ‘good friends’ after the filming of Abbas-Mustan’s film Aitraaz. But now, the sexy heroines will be seen together in another film by Abbas-Mustan. It is already known that Kareena Kapoor has been signed to star opposite Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor in Race 2. Now, there is a buzz that Priyanka Chopra is also going to join the team of Race 2 very soon. On the replacement of original stars Katrina and Bipasha, a source said, “Katrina’s not being in the film was almost certain as she was shown dead in the earlier film. But, the reason behind Bipasha’s replacement is not evident yet.” According to a close friend of Priyanka, “At present, Priyanka needs to complete her film Saat Khoon Maaf by Vishal Bharadwaj. Then she has pending work of Don 2 and the TV series ‘Fear factor 3’ in Colors. However, she is very excited about her role in Race 2 and is trying to set dates for it.”

Just because I’m a girl it shouldn’t be presumed that I can’t enter the boys’ territory. I’d do the stunts better than the boys,” Priyanka

The kissing star, Emraan Hashmi is spreading the news that he didn’t kiss in Milan Lutharia’s Once Upon A Time in Mumbai. “I am a father now, and I don’t want to embarrass my son, so I didn’t do any kissing scene in the film,” said the Serial kissing star Emraan Hashmi. However, this is also true that when director Milan asked Prachi Desai, who is paired opposite Emraan, to do a kissing scene, she refused. The film is produced by Prachi’s patron Ekta Kapoor. Yet Prachi pleaded that she wasn’t comfortable doing such an intimate act in front of the camera. Ekta understood... and Emraan was saved too.

Shilpa Shetty’s curves in danger zone Shilpa Shetty is becoming self indulgent. The diva is succumbing to her taste buds more often than before. We hear, the actress, who is more of a business woman now, has lost her diet discipline of late. Well, it’s not entirely her fault at the first place. Says our source, ‘Shilpa is known for her strict workout regimen and stricter diet discipline. But, ever since her birthday this month, Shilpa has been eating beyond the

permissible quantities. Matters worsened on her mum’s birthday when Shilpa threw her diet chart to winds completely. Now, the actress is worried about being so self indulgent and doesn’t want to put on weight. So, fighting kilos has again become her big concern these days.’ Shilpa has been one of the few heroines who has always maintained her hour glass looks. Let’s hope her curves don’t become victims of her taste buds.

Do you want to do most of the films that come your way or do you want to do only something which makes remember you even years after the films have released?”

In case of Sameera, the argument indeed holds good, well for quite a few films at the least. Starting her career with MAINE DIL TUJHKO DIYA (2002), she has ever since then made an impact with MUSAFIR, TAXI NO. 9211, RACE and ONE TWO THREE. “Since each of these names stands out, I guess my decision to do only few films is justified”, she smiles, “See, for me films are not a matter of ‘aayagaya’ affairs. I don’t sign those projects where no one knows what the hell they were all about. I am greedy actor. It is quality which is most important for me. That’s the kind of roadmap I have set for myself.” With an award winning RED ALERT - THE WAR WITHIN up for release, we would soon know whether the road map is indeed being followed.

Celina Jaitly props up a proposal

Big B back with KBC season 4

A

mitabh Bachchan aka Big B is going to host the season 4 of the quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati which has written a history on the small screen. The deal is set to be finalised between Big B and Big Synergy. Season 3 of the show was hosted by Shahrukh Khan. For the first time the show will be aired on Sony and not on Star Plus which first aired it 10 years back. Speculations were rife about Aamir Khan being approached to host Big Synergy’s KBC 4 (though Khan in a recent interview denied being approached). However, things didn’t work out and now sources confirm it is the show’s original host, Amitabh Bachchan returning to the fold. Sources say, “The

channel was contemplating on signing Aamir Khan to host KBC 4, however Amitabh Bachchan was always in the scheme of things. But then things did not work out with Aamir and the producers turned to Mr Bachchan. After all he was the original host. Bachchan has finally after contemplation agreed to host it and even sealed the deal.”

In Dubai, Celina Jaitly is asking, “Will you marry me?” The sexy and sultry siren is currently in Dubai with Shreyas Talpade, Rajeev Khandelwal and director Aditya Datt. At 49 degrees celsius, the lady is sweating it out at the gym, doing yoga and even meeting up with friends. She says they shot till 4am in the morning and she would up soon to hit the gym by eleven. Celina Jaitly also did a Telugu film titled Suryam, co-starring Vishnu, nearly 6 years ago.

Enjoyed kissing Vivek Oberoi “After doing a hell lot of hopping and jumping off the buildings sequences, it was a relief to stand still and kiss him. Plus, he’s a wonderful kisser,” declared British actress Aruna Shields who was in Noida to promote her movie Mr Singh Mrs Mehta. “But the experience of kissing Prashant (her co-star in the flick) wasn’t that wonderful as he fancies a stubble. She adds, “Posing nude for a scene in the movie wasn’t that difficult as I’m very comfortable with my body and when I do a film, I donate my body to the script. The scene has a very artistic approach and has been shot in a very neat manner. I am not scared of controversies.”

Angelina Jolie, not Madhuri, to play Draupadi?

I

ndian filmmaker Prakash Jha has a dream project Draupadi, in which he wants to cast Hollywood star Anjelina Jolie in the lead role. After the success of Rajneeti, which was inspired by the great Indian epic Mahabharata, Jha is ready for another movie, which will also be based on the same epic. Draupadi is believed to be a dream project of Prakash Jha. Earlier, the filmmaker wanted to work on the project with the once Bollywood queen Madhuri Dixit in the lead. But the project got shelved due to budget issues and lack of authentic adaptations. The glorious success of Rajneeti has revived his dream project once again and now he wants to make Draupadi in English with an international cast and crew. And, the news is that Jha wants to cast Anjelina Jolie for the title role. Speaking to the media, Jha stated, “I have been planning to make Draupadi for so many years, which will be my ultimate tribute to womanhood. My first

choice was Madhuri but now I’m planning to make it an international film. I want to make the film a grand epic with an international cast and huge budget.” Jha added, “My Draupadi would be set in the mountains so the actors should have an exotic look. In Peter Brooks’s adaptation of the Mahabharata on stage, you can see Mallika Sarabhai with exquisite features.” We can expect a modern and foreign Mahabharata from the filmmaker now!

Ali Zafar suffered short term memory loss

A

li Zafar, the Tere Bin Laden actor shocked everyone on the sets recently. The Pakistani singer turned actor suffered from a temporary memory loss following a minor accident causing everyone to panic. But the most shocked person was definitely the actor Ali Zafar, himself. Ali was supposed to ride a bike in one of the scenes. While riding the bike, the brakes failed and he fell somersaulting on the ground. This minor accident resulted in a state of temporary amnesia. Well, the best thing is that Ali has now got his memory back and we can enjoy the laugh riot Tere Bin Laden! Tere Bin Laden is a tongue-incheek comedy. in which Ali plays the role of an ambitious young news reporter from Pakistan. One who is desperate to go to the US to fulfill his dreams. Tere Bin Laden is a ‘jihad satire’, which is set to release worldwide on 16th July, 2010.

Bhatts not allowed to shoot in Australia

M

ahesh Bhatt and his team were not allowed to shoot for their upcoming film Crook in Australia even though they had all the requisite permission. The entire team had all the papers in place, including the work permits and a line producer, but after they reached their destination, they were denied permission. The Bhatts allege that the Australian officials brought up new rules, and even though the Bhatts complied with them, they were again denied permission to shoot.

July 2010 Edition

At that time, there were 15 other films being shot in the country without any trouble and only their film was singled out. The Bhatts have filed a complaint with the Indian Council General in Australia. Meanwhile, the Australian officials have laid the blame squarely on the Bhatts, saying that the crew kept changing the location they wanted to shoot at and caused confusion and the denial of permission. It remains to be seen who is telling the truth.

“The war is over, but the battle has just begun”, Sanju

T

he very first previews and snapshots of Rahul Dholakia’s film “Lamha” were unveiled during the prestigious IIFA event. Sanjay Dutt’s look in the film is reminiscent of his look in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s “Mission Kashmir”. We wonder whether there is any inspirational connection between the two. During the preview, Dholakia said, “Lamhaa is about that moment between life and death and is placed in Kashmir because you never know when that moment may arrive there. We shot in the valley at a time when trouble was still brewing and the future was uncertain. It was scary.” But the one who felt the most emotional connect with the movie was undoubtedly, Anupam Kher, who is a kashmiri pundit by birth. He rued the homeland he had lost to violence and said, “I’ve known Kashmir when it was free of bombs, gunfire and the army. But when I returned to the valley recently for this film, I saw only fear and destruction. Cinema teaches you to separate yourself from emotional issues, but I was still sad to see what my paradise had lost,” But Sanjay Dutt definitely made a profound statement when he gravely said, “The war is over sir, but the battle has just begun.” Well, almost no one disagreed on that note.

movie preview

Lamhaa L

AMHAA, an upcoming action thriller film, is all set to hit the screens on 16th July 2010. Produced by Bunty Walia & Jaspreet Singh Walia, LAMHAA is written & directed by Rahul Dholakia. Set in Kashmir, the film is a story about an army man, played by Sanjay Dutt, and his love interest, played by Bipasha Basu, in the midst of the various issues that Kashmir had faced for years. It also features Anupam Kher, Kunal Kapoor, Vipin Sharma, Yashpal Sharma, Shernaz Patel & Yuri Suri in supporting roles. The music of the film is composed by Mithoon with lyrics by Saeed Qadri and Amitabh Varma.. LAMHAA is distributed by G S Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.

Synopsis: Kashmir... once known as a paradise on earth, it is now a playground of Devils. A company is generating millions of unaccountable dollars that benefit all powers- from politicians and leaders to bureaucrats in the Indian and Pakistani intelligence. From high ranking army and police officers to the militants and their supporters, everyone gets a piece of the pie. The Military Intelligence gets a whiff of a plot that is likely to disrupt and possibly paralyze Kashmir. Vikram is sent to investigate this highly confidential mission using the identity of Gul Jehangir. The same day that he lands in the valley, Haji a top separatist leader, survives a blast. Could there be a connection between the blast and the operation? To solve this conundrum, Vikram teams up with Aziza, Haji’s young, aggressive and outspoken protege. The intensity of their beliefs and their will to survive against all odds creates a special bond between them. They embark together on a journey full of intrigue, suspicion, betrayal and danger, to uncover the truth. What seems like a routine investigation ends up being an operation that will change the perspectives and ideologies of both Vikram and Aziza as it exposes the dirty secrets of a state’s fight for freedom, the corrupt nexus of politicians,

intelligence, militancy and the crucification of idealistic and passionate people. In such a scenario, are bullets and bombs the only solution? Will wisdom prevail in the valley of flowers so the common Kashmiri is not sacrificed in the crossfire of politics? Will Vikram manage to restore peace and normalcy in the heaven turned hell?

RGV takes a dig at Karan Johar Filmmakers Ram Gopal Varma and Karan Johar are engaged in a war of words over Raavan on the micro-blogging site Twitter. The two are engaged in a verbal fight ever since Varma provoked Johar by expressing his desire to remake Raavan as My Name Is Raavan. “I want to remake Raavan and I want to request Mani to remake ‘(Ram Gopal Varma Ki) Aag,” Varma posted as a reaction to Mani Ratnam’s recently released Raavan on his Twitter page. It was followed by another post: “I (have) got a better idea... I will make My name is Raavan and Mani should make Raavan Ki Kurbaan.” The comment was an indirect dig at Johar’s movies My Name is Khan and Kurbaan. Varma did not even spare superstar Shah Rukh Khan and commented on his upcoming sci-fi project Ra.One. “Let’s all hope and pray that Ra.One does not become SRK ki Baarish. Let’s all hope and pray that Ra.One does not become SRK ki Aag,” he added. Johar, who was infuriated by Varma’s comments, replied: “You have an amazing sense of humour Ramu (Varma)! Never shows up in your films though.” On that Varma said: “Karan, because of the constant bashing I receive, I developed my sense of humour as a defence mechanism. And talking of my films not having humour, check out the great comedy I made called RGV Ki Aag.’’

Shahrukh Khan attends the World film premiere of ‘Raavan’, at the BFI Southbank on June 16, 2010 in London, England.

Is SRK ghost directing Ra.One ?

S

hah Rukh Khan is seriously inspired by arch rival Aamir Khan. That’s probably why he is interfering way too much in director Anubhav Sinha’s work. Or is Anubhav not confident in SRK’s presence? The director of Dus and Tum Bin fame is seeking SRK’s approval after every shot, reports Mid-Day. A source from the unit says, “After every shot, Anubhav looks at Shah Rukh for approval. Shah Rukh tries

to look away a bit, not wanting to interfere. But Anubhav is too awed by Shah Rukh’s presence on the set. He doesn’t okay any scene until Shah Rukh says so. He calls Shah Rukh and says, ‘Sir, dekh lo, theek hai ya nahi’.” “The number of takes in almost every scene depend on what Shah Rukh feels after he sees, or rather is made to see, the scene on the monitor,” adds the source. We hope SRK is enjoying his new role.

“I don’t like to blow kisses at my fans to show that I am a diva”

K

angana Ranaut is set for a brush with the underworld on screen once again after “Gangster”. She reveals that her character in “Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai” is a cross between don Haji Mastan’s wife Sona and yesteryears beauty Madhubala. “In real life Haji was a big fan of Madhubala-ji and he fell in love with Sona who looked like her. So my character is a cross between the two, “ Kangana told in a telephonic interview from Mumbai. “The character I am playing has some similarities with Madhubala-ji...like the way she was a superstar and had problems in life..., “ she added. Talking about her character Rehana in the film, Kangana said:

Kangana Ranaut

July 2010 Edition

“Rehana is a very big star...she is the woman who evokes desire in everyone and then she falls in love with this gangster and discovers a new world. My character transforms from a star to a woman.” Her character might be similar to that of Madhubala but Kangana was inspired by other yesteryears heroines too for the role. “I observed 70’s actresses like Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi... they were the rebels who wore bikinis and were style icons. My character is somehow like them, “ said Kangana. Set primarily in the 1970s Mumbai, the film by Milan Luthria will trace the changing face of the underworld through the eyes of a police officer. The story follows the rise of Sultan (Ajay Devgn), and

his eventual fall when his protege Shoaib (Emraan Hashmi) challenges his supremacy and usurps power to rule the underworld in the city. The film that releases July 30 also features Prachi Desai. On her personal life, Kangana is candid and says she doesn’t care what people think of her. And being a Bollywood diva is not really her cup of tea. “I really don’t care what people think of me and how they perceive me. That is okay with me because I don’t make an extra effort to be friendly to people. I do things I like doing, “ Kangana told. “I’m a very moody person. There are times when I want to talk about my life whereas there are days I just want to be left alone, “ she said.

John in bad mood Ekta Kapoor’s pack-up call costs

John Abraham is thinking negative. Buzz, is that the star has been approached by filmmakers Abbas-Mustan to play a baddie in their upcoming film RACE 2. Ever since John’s negative role in the film DHOOM, which was quite a hit, many filmmakers have tried to cash on this appeal of the actor. Now, in RACE 2, John is set to play the villain again. John will be the only character in the film whose role will be out-an-out negative. The other actors like Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor have both negative and positive shades to their character in the film. Now, will John rewrite a new definition of negative with his act is something his fans want to know this time. And that too eagerly.

20 lakh E

kta Kapoor is uncompromising as far as her films are concerned. The fiery tempered diva can go to any extent if her vision is being compromised. Something similar happened on the sets of her new film ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI. It’s learnt that Ekta Kapoor ordered a last minute pack-up when she felt that the song which was about to be shot was not meeting the standards that she had expected. So, a quick pack-up was announced. The lead actors, Emraan Hashmi and Prachi Desai were sent home and music director Pritam was told to make changes in the song. This whole affair cost Ekta a cool Rs 20 lakh, but she doesn’t mind the loss till her final product looks appealing.

Twitter bans Sherlyn from posting pictures Whenever Sherlyn Chopra goes and what ever she does creates a storm. Proving this was her recent ban from the micro blogging site Twitter. The seductive Sherlyn Chopra has been banned from posting images on Twitter. This comes after Sherlyn had posted naked images of herself on the site, saying that they were from a photo-shoot she had done. While not too long ago, she tweeted saying, “Where has my pic disappeared!!! This is strange! Can Twitter kindly let me know where my pics are? Is there a censor board on Twitter???” It turned out that the censors for content on Twitter deleted her images and also banned her from posting of images. Later Sherlyn updated, “Twitter has banned me from uploading pics...My Team is trying 2 get in touch with Twitter to sort out the matter.” Chopra has also suggested that she will quit the social networking website if the problem doesn’t get resolved soon.

This had led to a joke doing the rounds, in certain quarters about whether Sachin is a henpecked husband who wouldn’t move a limb unless his wife insists. It’s naïve to ask such a question to Sachin, after all no man would like to hear this. There’s almost an air of arrogance surrounding Juhi. We’ve seen her lose her temper in ‘Antakshari’. Parmar comes across as a dominating celebrity. Well, no matter what the world says, if Sachin is happy, who are we to complain?

Khan will be leaving Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai aired in Star Plus for the greener pastures of Bollywood. It is believed that Sara Khan will feature in a film that is being produced by her boyfriend. However, we hear that there is a slight twist in her tale. Apparently, we learnt that while Sara is all set to step into Bollywood, it’s not going to be in her boyfriend’s film. Instead, she’s said to be featuring opposite the popular Bollywood actor, Riteish Deshmukh. A source says, “Contrary to the popular perception, Sara is not doing Ali Merchant’s film. That project is said to have been shelved. Instead, she is doing another film. I do not know its name, but it’s confirmed that Sara will be paired opposite Ritesh Deshmukh in this film.” Adding further, the source says, “Riteish hasn’t succeeded in the films where he’s played

popular actress wants to be paired opposite him in such a film. For Sara, it will be a good break, so she’s accepted it.” Both Sara Khan and Ali Merchant remained unavailable for comment. Ritesh Deshmukh is currently shooting for Faltu which stars Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan. He’s got two more films in the pipeline too – Aladin 2 and Mahim Fatak Ke Baju Mein. The actor plays the sole lead in both these films. Sara has probably signed up for the latter.

Featherbrook the Ideal Place to Build Your Home

W

hen Kristy Munro began looking for land on which to build her first home, she wanted a large block to fit the house she had selected. She also wanted long term value for her investment and one estate stood out from the rest. “I looked for a very long time for the right size block and eventually I found it at Featherbrook,” she said. “I was also concerned about ongoing costs after we’d moved in and I found that all the other estates in the area charge substantial body corporate fees. Often these are for services like a local gym that I’m unlikely to use. Featherbrook is the only one that doesn’t impose additional fees.”

July 2010 Edition

A middle manager at a major CBD bank, Kristy has worked in customer service in the past and she was especially impressed by the service she received from Featherbrook sales staff. “I had a number of questions and I needed to speak with our salesman several times. He was always available and incredibly helpful through the whole process. On one occasion I had an important matter that needed to be sorted out quickly for our builder and it took the Central Equity Land representative only about 90 minutes to get it done. The whole team there was just great. Featherbrook’s design guidelines also appealed to Kristy. “I found the other estates were far too rigid in their requirements,” she said.

“I didn’t want to live in an area where everything looks the same. Central Equity Land has achieved a balance, with well designed streetscapes and mixed block sizes that I didn’t see anywhere else.” Originally from rural Victoria, Kristy was also drawn to Featherbrook’s nature reserves and open spaces and she plans to enjoy the parks and walking tracks whenever she can. Featherbrook offers the best of urban living, with excellent shopping, transport, medical services, schools and recreation areas all nearby and the CBD only 30 minutes away by public transport. Kristy’s new home is almost at lock-up stage and she and her partner, Brad plan to move in during October. “We’re very excited,” she said. “I can’t wait to move in.”

Arthritis

(Painful Joints) “The World Health Organization agrees that Ayurvedic treatment is a useful traditional health science for the prevention of Arthritis.”

A

rthritis is the major cause of disability and chronic pain in Australia as well as globally, with 3.85million Australians affected at a cost to Australian economy of more than $23.9 billion each year as health care burden. Arthritis is often referred to as a single disease. In fact, it is a broad term which is indicated for more than 100 medical conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, specifically joints where two or more bones meet. According to Ayurveda arthritis is primarily a vata (air) disease which is due to accumulation of toxins in the joints and is known as Amavata. The etiopathology (Samparapthi) includes both internal and external factors. External factors such as cold, damp and windy climatic conditions are responsible to cause the disease. Internal factors such as low Agni (poor digestive fire), poor digestion which leads to the accumulation of toxins (Ama) in the colon (Pakvasaya) which is taken up to the various parts of the body, when it is accumulated in the joints at the same time there is aggravation of vata (Air= Biological

Female Viagra doesn’t boost sex drive

O

ften people who are called lazy aren’t. Often so-called “lazy” people only feel overwhelmed when presented a task that seems more fit for a big team than just one person. Sometimes, however, it is chronic laziness that kicks in and stops us from doing the things that need to be done. The Indiantimes will help you just get up and do it!

L e ts O v e r c om e

1. Try to figure out the single detail or problem which is holding you back. Most likely, the sticking issue is smaller than you think it is, and you can get past it more easily than you think. Whatever it is, don’t give up until you find a way to get past it somehow. Remember, it’s probably one single, specific problem or detail. 2. Think about the importance of the problem or goal. Is it something you can actually afford to ignore? Is it something that somebody else can help you with? Can you just forget about this and try a different approach altogether? Are you being too much of a perfectionist? 3. Convince yourself you can do something. Some who feel they might be “lazy” are actually recreating and reliving unpleasant or dreary “freezes” from childhood. No need to dig into your past but if you do feel stuck, try jumping up, do a task, and tell yourself “Despite an old habit of freezing up, I can get up right now and be productive!” 4. Decide to start the work, and you are well on your way to completing it.

9. Continue working. It’s hard to get on a roll, so once you’re there, jump right onto your next goal as soon as you’re done rewarding yourself. The longer you delay re-starting, the harder it will be to re-start. But the sooner you re-start, the more confident you will feel -- and that will reinforce the positive behavior that leads to feeling that you can do anything! 10. Don’t give up. It’s one thing to find your motivation. But, it’s another thing to keep it going when the going gets tough -- especially when it’s an unforeseen problem! The more avoidant you are, the more you will feel like giving up. How to get past the tough point? Tell yourself over and over: “I really want to get past this; I really want to overcome this”, until you believe that you actually don’t want to give up. 11. Stay off the couch until you are ready to take a break. And when you do sit, set a time when you will return to your task or to do other activities around the house: read a book, run a load of laundry, write to a friend, etc.

6. Gear yourself up into action by telling yourself something like: “I want to do this; I want to do this now! So I’ll just do it and rest later”. Say it out loud if you have to. You’ll feel motivated after this.

8. Remember to reward yourself for the very small things you complete or try. If you manage to do something that you didn’t the day before, you deserve a nice treat. You need to reward yourself for completing each task, in order to feel good about having pushed yourself in order to get the job done. After the ‘small’ task is complete, reward yourself by going for a walk for a few minutes or eat some snack or some other small reward/break (or relax doing something you would like to if you have already been out). Doing this will train your mind into wanting to work. As well, cumulative rewards make you feel confident -- and that’s the real cure for laziness. Some say you may also want to punish yourself for each step you fail to achieve, but this is ill-advised as it will only reinforce the negative behavior that ultimately leads to avoidance at the prospect of failure.

How to take care of your precious eyes Here’s how you can take care of your eyes: 99 If you experience constant headaches while reading or working, get an eye examination. A persistent headache is a common sign of an increase in eye power. 99 Even if you’ve perfect 6/6 vision, run regular checks at home. Try to read the time on a clock from a distance of five to six feet, first with both eyes, and then with one eye at a time. If there’s a problem in either, you’ll be able to spot the difference.

5. Take your time. Break down your job into small steps. Find the way to do them, and do them, in a relaxed and controlled way. Focus always on one task: the one you are doing, because you’ll have time to focus on the other ones. Brains tend to work inefficiently when there is constant pressure to do several things with tight deadlines.

7. Finish a step and cheer up. Completing that task will feel remarkably good, and tell yourself (out loud, if necessary) “Good stuff; you’re on a roll; keep this up and you’re going to make it to the end of this”. Working towards little goals is actually the secret to big success: big successes are just made up of many little continuous successes.

A pill which was anticipated to become the first “female viagra” has failed to show effective results in trials. The findings revealed that the drug Flibanserin has failed to have a significant impact on libido and only made sexual encounters ‘slightly’ more satisfying. The pill also has side effects ranging from drowsiness, depression, fainting and dizziness. It also takes several weeks for the drug’s effect to build up. US’s Food and Drug Administration’s advisory committee is now considering whether to recommend the approval of the drug, reports dailymail.co.uk. Some doctors are also skeptical about the need for pills to boost female sex drive and have accused drug companies of creating a market for new medications. They point out that a pill is not going to fix a broken relationship or help ease the burden of childcare or housework.

12. Set some long term goals. If you have goals set up for yourself, you have something to look forward to. Pick goals which are high and will really inspire you. Picture what you really want. Low goals will not really motivate you. Your goals can be to save to buy a home, that red sports car, or fulfill your lifelong dreams (maybe you’ve been wanting to open a bookstore, an arcade, or start your own publishing company). Make a to-do list, both of large and small things, and prioritize. 13. Make that list of your desires, goals and motivations where you want to move towards to. Keeping them in mind will help you feel energized and willing to take any step needed to achieve them. 14. Create a vision board to post all your goals and dreams on. Be creative and use pictures, magazine articles, etc... to fully map out your dreams onto this board. Each day that you wake, look at your vision board and focus on where you want to be. This will provide an inspired start to your day, and push you to your dreams.

99 Always read in good light and never while lying down. If you feel the need to hold the book a little farther away in order to read the words better, get an eye checkup done. You may require reading glasses. 99 If your work requires you to be in front of a computer screen for long periods, make a conscious effort to blink often. Also, take a break from looking at the screen every 15 minutes. 99 If you use contact lenses, don’t wear them for more than eight hours at a stretch.

Ear, Nose & Throat infections in Children this Winter Homeopathic Help .

T

his is that time again, when every parent stresses about the various ear, nose and throat infections that their young ones may be susceptible to this year. Its winter time again. Medical practitioners start to see a steady stream of sniffing, feverish, coughing children. Even parents may begin to wonder if they really need to bring their children to the doctor or let the episode pass through, or how long do they need to wait before they get to the doctor etc. While some children may have just a brief attack of the ailment, the real worry lies among those children who will suffer time and again. A disease-causing germ, such as a bacteria or virus invades the body. Infection occurs when we are exposed to the germ. But not everyone exposed will get the infection. This is called susceptibility to disease. (the ability to get infected). A child’s immune system is usually not fully developed. Every new disease or infection becomes a learning process. Some children who have an immune system that is “over-active” get allergies and “under-active” get frequent infections.

Ear, nose and throat infections have become very much an inevitable part of childhood and the aim of every parent should be to provide the best possible defense to their child to ensure minimal impact on the child’s comfort, long term health, ensure that the overall resistance of the child and its well being is not affected and to minimize the recurrence next season. The most common ENT infections as every parent will be well aware of are as follows: EAR INFECTIONS SUCH AS: Acute Otitis Media (AOM) and Otitis Media with Effusion (fluid), where parts of the ear are infected and swollen and fluid and mucus are trapped inside the ear till the infection disappears, Glue Ear where fluid gathers in the middle ear and eventually becomes sticky and glue like and can cause slight deafness.

»» »» »» »»

NOSE AND THROAT INFEC-

»»

TIONS SUCH AS: Such as blocked noses, dry coughs, allergic Rhinitis, sore throats, runny noses, sinusitis (acute or chronic), colds or allergy episodes , fevers, swallowing difficulties, swollen lymph glands, headaches, chills, throat pains, loss of voice, discomfort and pain. These can be caused due to bacterial or viral infections.

»»

THE MOST SUSEPTIBLE CHILDREN: »» Children with weak or compromised immune systems »» Younger infants (their immune

»»

systems may not be fully developed) Children spending more time in day care settings Children exposed to cigarette smoke Children being bottle fed for longer period Children over exposed to junk food and consume less greens and fresh food Children with underlying chronic conditions Children living in over hygienic environments (usage of excess cleaning products etc) Children over exposed to allergens, pollutants, chemicals etc.

WHY HOMEOPATHY FOR ENT INFECTIONS: As we discussed, Ear, Nose and Throat infections, in most cases, are not very serious in nature. Two things to consider are 1.) they are recurrent nature and 2.) the antibiotics which are usually prescribed are only helpful in certain bacterial infections, while these infections

are more often caused due to viral infections as well. So the medication should be one that can effectively address these two issues. Homeopathic remedies give subtle and gentle challenges to the child’s immune system who evolve to be stronger individuals with a strong immune system and do not fall sick that often or that severely. The child develops a state of overall wellbeing and is well positioned to naturally wade off any disease. The child also experiences gentle and quick recovery from most ailments. Homeopathy can also address the predisposition or susceptibility to get infections or disease. Antibiotics are not the appropriate first line of treatment for childhood respiratory conditions. Nonetheless, children receive repeated antibiotic courses through the winter that lead to an escalating problem of recurrent infections. This cycle can be broken using simple holistic measures. Effective prevention and holistic treatment

are the best methods for managing these acute and recurrent problems. Proper nutrition, avoidance of toxic drugs, herbal protocols, homeopathic medicines, and chiropractic adjustment can all play a role in preventing, treating, and eliminating these illnesses that plague our children. Time has come that every healthconscious parent should recognize the scope and role of Homoeopathic science for day to day problems. In conditions where other systems of medicine fail or have little scope and if you are looking for a natural, safe, gentle, non-toxic and effective alternative, you should think of Homeopathy. You may ask your personal query to Raj Kothuru (Homeopath) via email drraj@aurahealth.com.au or phone 0425 761 826 / (03) 9478 8649 regarding any of your health problems. You will be offered authentic information and an opinion as to what best can be done pertaining to your ailment.
