Australa's New measures to control 'knife culture' "I believe it will be a major deterrent to those wanting to carry a knife," Brumby said adding, "We want to break the knife culture which has emerged in Victoria and in other states and around the world." Under a proposed change in law, the onus of proof has been reversed to allow a fine to be imposed as soon as a knife is sighted by police. The principle that a person is innocent until proven guilty will be turned around whereby one found to be carrying a knife will be "guilty until proven innocent", Brumby said.
I
n a bid to crack down on street crimes, Victorian government on Thursday announced USD 1000 on-the- spot fine for people caught carrying knives and gave more powers to police to conduct random weapon searches in the Australian state that saw a spate of attacks on Indians. The government, facing strong criticism over law and order situation in the state, particularly in the wake of several attacks on Indian students, expanded search
and seizure powers to enable police to conduct random search for arms in designated public areas, such as train stations, without notice.
Police have also been given new powers to carry out random search of public areas if they have reasonable suspicion that knives are being carried by people.
Under the three-point plan, minors will be banned from buying prohibited or controlled weapons. Carrying a knife on licensed premises like bars and pubs will bring a USD 2000 on-the-spot fine, Victorian Premier John Brumby was quoted as saying by media reports today.
This is in addition to the recently given power to carry out planned searches of designated areas, Brumby said. He expected that the new measures, drawn up in conjunction with police, would receive cross-party support in Parliament. The steps have been taken because while there has

been a downward trend in knife attacks in Victoria, the government is concerned that more young people were found to be carrying knives and knife attacks are inflicting graver injuries, he said. "That disturbs us greatly and we want to break that knife culture," he said. Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Ken Jones said there was no quick fix to knifecarrying culture but new penalties were "a useful addition to the tools we already have". The fines applied to knives and other prohibited or controlled weapons with an exemption for anyone using knives as part of their occupation. A fine can also be appealed against, the premier said. Meanwhile, community policing initiative CrimeStoppers has also joined forces with Customs and Border Protection to curb import of illegal weapons. Police were already working with Customs through CrimeStoppers tip-offs and has announced a formal agreement under which they will pool resources to stop illegal imports at the borders.
The Pakistani intelligence agency ISI knows the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden but is keeping his location a secret and wants to use the Al Qaeda chief as leverage over the US as it is wary of America's closer ties with India, noted military historian Stephen Tanner has said. "We got to make a deal with Pakistan because I'm convinced that he (bin Laden) is protected by the ISI," said Tanner, the author of 'Afghanistan: A Military History from Alexander the Great to the War against the Taliban.' Tanner says the ISI knows where bin Laden is hiding, but is not ready to say.

Nityananda Swami, who is quite popular attracting a large number of devotees with his lucid style of interpreting philosophies of life and makes appearances on TV channels, was purportedly shown on the channel in a compromising position.
The family, which was due to leave Australia soon, told the police that Gurshan was home playing. His mother, Harpreet Kaur, who is studying in Australia, was in the bathroom and came out to see the security door ajar and Gurshan gone. After a frantic search on the premises, a family member called the police.
''We are doing everything in our power to establish what happened. Clearly the circumstances are suspicious, so we are assuming the worst.''
Swami Nithyananda lands in sex scandal
self-styled godman has gone "missing" after video footage of his alleged sleazy acts were aired on a leading Tamil TV channel in Chennai, which were dismissed by his ashram as "morphed images".
The Indian boy, Gurshan Singh Kaurchanna, 3, who was on a three-month holiday in Australia with his parents, vanished from a relative's house in Lalor at about 1.10 pm (Australian time) on Thursday, while his mother was having a shower.
A massive hunt was launched and a council worker discovered the body at Oaklands Junction, close to the Melbourne airport after 7 pm. An Australian newspaper website quoted the police as saying that the body found was in grey top and blue jeans. This is what Gurshan had been wearing when he went missing. Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Sir Ken Jones was quoted by Australian media as saying that they believed the child had been murdered. ''We are treating as worst case ... as a homicide,'' he said. ''This is a terrible tragedy.
Self-styled godman is missing !!
"He is missing," said Devaraj, Deputy Superintendent of Police of Ramanagaram district, under whose limits the ashram is located at Bidadi near Bangalore. Gurshan Singh Kaurchanna "Any death of a child is a terrible, terrible tragedy. The death of a child so young is a terrible, unthinkable tragedy," Premier John Brumby said. "We hope this crime can be solved and resolved as soon as possible." With tensions between India and Australia still running high, Mr Brumby said it was important that people don't jump to conclusion about the death at this time.
The Bangalore-based ashram manager Sevananda today ďŹ led a complaint with police, stating he had received calls from Chennai, threatening to expose the alleged sleazy activities of Swami, in his early thirties, hailing from Thiruvanamalai in Tamil Nadu. In the complaint, Sevananada

said the caller threatened to provide the "footage" to the media and had demanded money not to release it. Sevananada said the clippings showing Swami in poor light are "morphed". The ashram has several branches across India and 13 abroad. After the video clippings were aired, many people gathered before the ashram. Meanwhile at Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, said a committee would be formed to look into what action can be taken into the incident. Endorsing the view that such incidents involving self-styled godmen are "on the rise" in the state, he said the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department "will see what action can be taken in such cases."

VU releases study on international student safety in Melbourne A
Victoria University study into the safety of international students in Melbourne has found that a vast majority find the city to be a safe place. Nevertheless, many students reported threats to their safety that they believed had a racial, religious or cultural element.
More than 1000 international and domestic students across Melbourne were surveyed for the study by VU’s Institute for Community, Ethnicity and Policy Alternatives (ICEPA). A further 35 students completed in-depth interviews and 29 stakeholders, including Victoria Police, student associations and consular officials, were also interviewed at length.
Other key findings include: More than half of surveyed international students found the city less safe than they had anticipated ·

A complex cocktail of factors were identified by students as safety threats, including lack of access to safe affordable housing, high-risk employment and poor transport options, but racism was one of the most frequently mentioned Perpetrators of violence were frequently identified by those who participated in the study to be groups of young, alienated men
VU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research Professor Linda Rosenman said the report was an exploratory study funded by the University in June last year to examine the issues surrounding the attacks on international students in Melbourne.
T
“It is a thorough study and although we make no claims that the survey sample is fully representative, we believe the report provides valuable evidence and indicates the need for further research,” Professor Rosenman said.
he quake that rocked the South American nation may have also knocked the Earth off its axis. The 8.8-magnitude earthquake near Chile may have also made our planet's days shorter, according to NASA scientist Richard Gross.
“The report identifies the need for government, education providers and authorities to better understand and to acknowledge all factors affecting the safety of international students.
A minor change in the Earth’s axis isn't expected to alter much in terms of weather. The planet's tilt influences the seasons, allowing for winter, spring, summer and fall, and it would take a far greater change in the Earth's axis to affect them.
“We now have evidence that housing, employment, transport and racism are all in the mix as factors that influence attacks and abuse of international students in Australia.
The Chile quake may have moved the Earth’s axis by about 3 inches, Gross said. The quake also shortened the day by 1.26 microseconds, the scientist determined, using a complex model he and others developed.
“The opportunism argument – that a student who has been assaulted or robbed was in the wrong place at the wrong time – appears likely to be true in some cases. However, in other cases students say that racism was a motivating factor. As Victoria Police officers interviewed as part of this study have indicated, the distinction can be blurred.
The Earth's rotation was likely affected by the shift in the planet's mass, which could cause it to spin faster. Scientists believe other quakes, such as the 2004 9.1-magnitude earthquake in Sumatra, have also decreased the Earth's day. That quake is believed to have shortened it by 6.8 microseconds, and altered the axis by nearly 7 inches.
“It is essential that threats to the safety of international students in our country are minimised. This means developing prevention and support programs that address the major issues raised in the report. Safety is a basic human right and must be protected.”
Vehicles that were driving along a highway that collapsed during the earthquake near Santiago are seen overturned on the asphalt Saturday Feb. 27, 2010 after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck central Chile early Saturday. The quake hit 200 miles (325 kilometers) southwest of the capital and the epicenter was just 70 miles (115 kilometers) from Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city.

Immigration to Australia ! Is it still an option for Students & Prospective Migrants? Skilled Migration program for a while, where people were virtually buying their way into Permanent Residence without having any of the skills they have nominated to get their Australian Residency. Whether the policies they are planning to implement will work or not in the long run, only time will say. But in the short run, it has created a lot of confusion, dissatisfaction and hopelessness among many students and prospective migrants. I will endeavour to clear out some of these confusions and describe what options still are available or not available. ENS (Employer Scheme):

Dear Readers, it has been a while since I last wrote on changes in Immigration Law and Policy. But on 8th February 2010, the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans announced such major changes to Skilled Migration that it will change the entire landscape of the education and immigration industry. These changes are intended to remove the current rot that existed in the
Nomination
A lot of students are choosing this option for Permanent Residence without even realising they may not be eligible for it. They may be working in their nominated occupation and the employer may also be happy enough with them, to sponsor them. But unfortunately with the removal of the Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL) list, most of these employees will not be able to meet the three years full time work experience requirement, unless their nominated occupation is in the Critical Skills List (CSL). Depending on what’s in the new Skilled Occupation List (SOL) to be announced in April
2010, and how the ENS section of DIAC implements the new SOL for waiver options, the employer sponsored pathway for students working parttime in their nominated occupation will virtually be non-existent, unless the government comes up with a more sensible way of waiving the three years full time work experience requirement for students already employed in their nominated occupation. TRA Assessments Old TRA (Trades Recognition Australia) Assessments done or applied for, before 1st January 2010 are still valid for applying for the Subclass 485 Skilled Graduate Visa. These TRA Assessments will also be valid to apply for your Permanent Residence (PR), when the legislation is updated by March 2010 (i.e., first quarter of 2010). In other words, anyone who has a TRA Assessment done or applied for, before 1st January 2010, will not need to go through the TRA Job Ready Program (JRP). This will allow thousands of students to apply for Permanent Residence by 31st December 2012 even if their nominated occupation is not in the new SOL, as long as they held or applied for a Subclass 485 Skilled Graduate Visa and had not applied for a Provisional or Permanent GSM Visa, on or before 7th February 2010.
Cancellation of 20,000 Offshore Pre 1 September 2007 Visas
some applicants and students until 31st December 2012.
Around 20,000 Offshore Skilled Migration Applications filed before 1st September 2007 will “cease” and application fees will be refunded after the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship “caps” the number of visas that may be granted for that financial year. This seems very unfair to these applicants and also gives the Minister power to apply policy retrospectively. I believe it also damages Australia’s reputation in the long run. It is much better not to accept applications above a certain number in any financial year, rather than accepting them, making the applicants pay fees and other related expenses, have them wait for years, then suddenly cancel their applications as well as their dreams and hopes. It is not clear when this “capping” and “ceasing” of pre 1st September 2007 applications will occur, but an announcement is supposed to come in the near future.
The MODL list will still apply to anyone who on 8th February 2010 (the day of the Minister’s announcement) held a Skilled—Graduate (subclass 485) visa, or have applied for a subclass 485 visa before 8th February 2010, and are yet to apply for a permanent or provisional General Skilled Migration (GSM) visa. The MODL list will also continue to apply to anyone who have applied for a provisional or permanent GSM visa application before 8th February 2010.

Although the MODL list has been revoked on 8th February 2010, and the current SOL will cease to exist when the new SOL becomes effective from mid-2010, both the MODL and the current SOL will continue to exist for
Similarly, the current SOL will still apply to anyone who on 8th February 2010 held a Skilled—Graduate (subclass 485) visa, or have applied for a subclass 485 visa before 8th February 2010, and are yet to apply for a permanent or provisional GSM visa, and who makes an application by 31 December 2012. The current SOL list will also continue to apply to anyone who have applied for a provisional or permanent GSM visa application before 8th February 2010. Finally, students who held any of the below mentioned visa subclasses on 8th February 2010, can still use the current SOL to apply for a for a Skilled—Graduate (subclass 485) visa, however these student visa holders will be required to have an occupation on the new SOL to apply for a permanent (contd next page)

Processing Times It is important to note that the Skilled—Graduate (subclass 485) visa is exempt from priority processing as of 8th February 2010. That means, these visas will be processed much faster now, and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship intends to clear the current backlog of Subclass 485 visas. That should be good news for many, who can then make use of the recent experience exemption while on the Subclass 485 visa, and file their Permanent Residence. Offshore GSM visa applicants not nominated in accordance with an approved State Migration Plan, or not having a nominated occupation on the CSL, will not likely see their applications finalised within three years of the date of the application.
Shane Warne joins Indian students to relieve fears
Similarly, Onshore GSM visa applicants not nominated in accordance with an approved State Migration Plan, or not having a nominated occupation on the CSL, will not likely see their applications finalised within two years of the date of the application. It is also important to note that family sponsored visas are in the low end of the Minister’s processing priority. Other important Changes If you are applying for either a Subclass 487, 885 or 886 visa on or after 1 January 2010, you will need to have obtained a suitable skills assessment in order to lodge a valid visa application. For a Subclass 485 visa, which is not affected by this change, you are still able to demonstrate at the time of application that you have either applied for or have already received a suitable skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority. From 1 January 2010, onshore students whose occupation is a trade occupation can no longer apply for an offshore GSM visa unless they have been employed in a skilled occupation for a minimum of 12 months of the 24 months immediately before the day on which the visa application was made. Onshore students whose occupation is not a trade occupation can still apply for an offshore GSM visa and meet the Australian Study Requirement. The points test is now being reviewed and a new Points Test is likely to come in the not too distant future. A lot depends on what occupations will be in the new SOL when it’s announced in April 2010. It will directly affect the Education Industry. It will also be interesting to see approved State Migration Plans running separately and parallel to the new SOL. The government wants to totally clean up Skilled Migration and has so far taken a very bold conservative approach. Hopefully, we’ll end up somewhere in the middle.
Melbourne: Australian spin legend Shane Warne stepped in to mend his country's fractured ties with India, attending a picnic here with the Indian community, which has been targetted in a series of violent attacks in the past few months.
When using the information above, make sure you discuss it first in detail with an experienced OMARA registered Migration Consultant, so the right solution is applied in your case, and you end up getting the desired results in these uncertain times for the Australian Skilled Migration Program.
"I think the state sells itself, it's just such a great state, it's a great city to live in. I'll keep pushing the message across over there, I love India, I love Rajasthan when I play cricket there, so to me it was a natural thing," Warne said.

n a rebuff to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, veteran playback singer Asha Bhosle has said, “Hindustan belongs to all and people are bound to flock to Mumbai.” Ms. Bhosle made this remark in the presence of Mr. Raj Thackeray, known for his antimigrant stand, at a cultural evening organised on Sunday by a Marathi television channel here, while distancing herself from parochial sentiments involving Mumbai and Maharashtra. “People are bound to flock to Mumbai as Hindustan belongs to all. Those who work hard here
become prosperous. I also worked in my field with determination to earn success. I have sung in all Indian languages but I am a proud Maharashtrian,” she said when asked by the compere whether Mumbai was turning ugly with an exodus from outside.

Govt may cut service tax on air travel The government may lower the proposed 10 per cent service tax rate on domestic and international air travel, even as it ruled out any rollback in the oil prices. “We are holding talks on the service tax issue with all air carriers and stakeholders. We should arrive at a rate that is not too excessive and does not put undue burden on passengers,” Central Board of Excise and Customs chairman V Sridhar indicated on Wednesday during a post-Budget interaction with ASSOCHAM. The Budget 2010-11 has proposed a service tax of 10 per cent on both domestic and international air travel. The aviation industry reacted sharply to the hike and urged the government to reduce it. The Budget, while proposing to further widen the umbrella of service tax, also expanded the scope of “airport services” tax by including facilities provided within the airport premises. Meanwhile, the Centre on Wednesday firmly ruled out any rollback in oil prices and made it clear to its allies not to expect any changes in the proposals made in the Budget.

Parachute opened, but pilot died: Eyewitness Desperate attempts by the two pilots to save the ill-fated Kiran MK-II aircraft of the Indian Navy’s Sagar Pawan aerobatic team went in vain. Commander SK Maurya and Lieutenant Commander Rahul Nair was at the cockpit. According to eyewitnesses, Lt Cmdr Nair made a desperate attempt to eject from the aircraft. Though the parachute opened, it could not take the pilot away from the crash site. He first fell on electric cables and then on the ground and died. Cmdr Maurya died, trapped in the cockpit. “We only saw one pilot dropping down like a stone. We did not even know that there was another pilot in the cockpit. The other pilot’s body was packed in a small box,” eyewitness Ram Kumar told. Eyewitnesses said the aircraft hit an overhead water tank of the building before hitting its top floor.“We were watching helplessly. We saw only the tail hanging out of the building,” another eyewitness said. The death of the two pilots sent shock waves at their base at INS Hansa in Dabolim in Goa. The Sagar Pawan was founded in 2003. This was the first accident in its history.

Facebook is certainly the perfect way to re-connect with old friends and make new ones. But the social networking site also turns you green with jealousy when you find your boyfriend’s friends list includes his ex-girlfriends. Now, human sexuality researcher and PhD candidate at the University of Guelph in Canada, Amy Muise, has explained how Facebook contributes to relationship jealousy, reports Discover News. 1. It’s Addictive “Curse that Mark Zuckerberg for creating this online crack! No matter how you try to fight it, Facebook keeps calling you back… and that’s the problem. The more time people spent on Facebook they more jealous they were. Even after Muise’s experiment controlled for factors of trust, self-esteem, and relationship commitment, “… time spent on Facebook was still a significant predictor of the experience of jealousy,” Muise said. It’s a strange concept, but if you want to avoid some of the jealousy in your relationship, you’ll have to give Facebook a bit of a rest. 2. It’s Too Easy to Reconnect with Ex’s

“Facebook is a forum that can expose individuals to more information about their partner than they may otherwise have access to.” Muise said. “In addition, Facebook allows you to monitor your partner’s activities without being detected. 5. It May Just Be You “Before you blame all of your failed relationships on Facebook, just wait. If you thought your kindergarten girlfriend was cheating on you because she shared her chips with another boy in your class, the greeneyed monster may just reside in your DNA. At the end of the day Muise and her colleagues recognized that other factors like the dynamic of the relationship and one’s own propensity towards jealous behavior could also make them Facebook jealous.”

“In this information age not even relationships are spared. Gone are the days when lipstick on the collar was the only sign your mate was being unfaithful. Now the information practically comes to you. All you have to do is log on. The “tagged” pictures, the “liked” statuses, and the shared plans for this weekend could all potentially trigger feelings of jealousy.”
“If you think your girlfriend hasn’t seen something on your Facebook profile, you’re wrong. Not only has she seen it, she’s already become enraged, discussed it with her girlfriends and is waiting to confront you about it. Sorry ladies, but those two X chromosomes don’t work in your favor when it comes to Facebook. While Muise and her colleagues found that women are not more jealous than men, they did find that women spent more time on Facebook than men. Which means their relationship jealousy was more likely to be ignited by Facebook than a man’s.”

Microsoft adds social networking to Outlook
M
icrosoft has launched its attempt to incorporate online social networking features into its widely used desktop e-mail software. Features to be incorporated into the next version of Microsoft Outlook, used by 500 million people as part of its Office software applications, will turn the e-mail service into a hub of social information. The move underlines the growing importance of networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn to businesses and comes a week after Google stumbled when it introduced its Buzz social network feature into its Gmail program. The search group has had to apologise and release several fixes after users found that Buzz could reveal

TECHNOLOGY
4G NETWORK
Not so fast
Despite claims from mobile phone carriers, the next generation of mobile technology, or 4G, will only be slightly faster than current 3G speeds, at least initially.
Sony Ericsson Launches Too Sexy for Your Vivaz, Xperia Phones iPhone?
Massive costs, soaring consumer demand for data and the logistical nightmare of setting up tens of thousands of new cell sites will prevent 4G technology from reaching its promised speeds for years, according to carriers and wireless experts.
Acer's e-reader plans on hold Holding your breath for an Acer e-reader? Well, you can exhale. The Taiwanese company said it would not be jumping into the e-reader market for now, despite announcing less than a month ago plans to launch a reader by midyear. The increasingly crowded e-reader market, of course, may have gotten a whole lot more competitive with the January 27 unveiling of Apple's iPad, which debuted just days after Acer announced its plans for a 6-inch monochrome e-reader. Acer said at the time it would initially aim the device at the European market, which might have helped it gain traction before hitting the States. But that's a moot point for now.
Sony Ericsson Corporate Vice President Head of Marketing Lennard Hoornik attends a press conference during a press meeting for the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona, Spain.
A
t the ongoing Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson Sunday announced several new smartphones in a move to strengthen its presence in the profitable high-end market segment.
The company, a joint venture between Sweden's L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co. (ERIC) and Japan's Sony Corp. (SNE), said it will in the second quarter launch the new smartphones Xperia X10 mini and Xperia X10 mini pro. These are compact versions of the Xperia X10 flagship phone which was announced late 2009 and will be launched during the first quarter 2010, it said. Like the Xperia X10, the smaller versions allow users to organize and integrate social media services like Facebook and Twitter through a function called Timescape. Both devices have touch screens, and the mini pro also has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The company said it will in the first quarter launch a smartphone built around the Symbian operating system called Vivaz, which offers high quality video capability for recording and publishing of video clips. The phone, which also offers an 8.1 megapixel camera and touch screen, will be followed in the second quarter by Vivaz Pro, which also has a QWERTY keyboard. Out of the phones just about to be launched, the Xperia X10 will probably sell best, said Brusewitz, but added that the X10 mini could also be a big seller.
Facebook FarmVille hits 100 million users

000 iPhone apps are too sexy. At least that's what Apple claims. The company has banned what it considers sexually offensive software from its online app store. In the last few days Apple has removed the objectionable app content including 50 different products from a company called On the Go Girls. Among its offerings is the "Dirty Fingers Sexy Screen Wash." If you haven't seen it, the app features a partially clothed young woman named Amber acting as though she were cleaning your iPhone screen. Company President Fred Clarke told, Apple's decision will cost the app software developer thousands of dollars a day. Clarke said the sudden change in policy is "unfair" and hypercritical.
RED STEEL 2 the wait is over A
ccording to the the creative director of Red Steel 2, Jason Vandenberghe, PS3's new motion detection control could fit perfectly for the game.
S
ocial gaming is big, very big. So big, in fact, that the most popular of all the games available on social networks, FarmVille, now boasts an incredible 100 million users every month, with 30 million of those playing on a daily basis. That’s a lot of pixelated characters doing pointless chores every day. Anyone who has ever used Facebook cannot help but have come across FarmVille. It’s ever-present in your news stream if even one of your friends plays it. And with AppData revealing that 80 million of the 400 million Facebook users now plays FarmVille, the chances are more than one of your friends is addicted. FarmVille is the most-used Facebook app of them all, and making its developer, Zynga, a lot of money by way of the sale of virtual goods. And its other offerings, Café World, FishVille, PetVille, and Mafia Wars are also popular. Which makes me shudder at the thought of where this will all end. How long until my Facebook news stream is full of nothing but social gaming updates?

Jason Vandenberghe is the creative director of Red Steel 2, one of the most awaited Wii games of the year. And as any good creative director, he is concerned over the several aspects of game controls that the game would have if it were ever to reach beyond the Wii: ‘I think Red Steel 2 would work out perfectly with Arc (the new motion detection control of the PS3). It just fits perfectly to its characteristics, so it isn’t too far fetched to wonder about a Red Steel 2 on the PS3”, he affirmed. “Microsoft has taught me something that I hadn’t seen ever before, a new scheme to control games that goes beyond everything we’ve seen so far. Nevertheless, given the traits of our game, I don’t think Red Steel 2 would work out so well on Natal…” he concluded. Is a Red Steel 2 on the PS3 with Arc controls on the horizon? Only time will tell.

Kilauea the World’s Most Active Volcano
K
īlauea is the youngest and southeastern most volcano on the Big Island of Hawai`i. Topographically Kīlauea appears as only a bulge on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa, and so for many years Kīlauea was thought to be a mere satellite of its giant neighbor, not a separate volcano. However, research over the past few decades shows clearly that Kīlauea has its own magma-plumbing system, extending to the surface from more than 60 km deep in the earth.
In fact, the summit of Kīlauea lies on a curving line of volcanoes that includes Mauna Kea and Kohala and excludes Mauna Loa. In other words, Kīlauea is to Mauna Kea as Lo`ihi is to Mauna Loa. Hawaiians used the word Kīlauea only for the summit caldera, but earth scientists and, over time, popular usage have extended the name to include the entire volcano. The eruption of Kīlauea Volcano that began in 1983 continues at the cinder-and-spatter cone of Pu`u `Ō `ō (high point on skyline). Lava erupting from the cone flows through a tube system down Pulama pali about 11 km to the sea (lower left). Kīlauea is the home of Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess. Hawaiian chants and oral traditions tell in veiled form of many eruptions fomented by an angry Pele before the first European, the missionary Rev. William Ellis, saw the summit in 1823. The caldera was the site of nearly continuous activity during the 19th century and the early part of this century. Since 1952 there have been 34 eruptions, and since January 1983 eruptive activity has been continuous along the east rift zone. All told, Kīlauea ranks among the world’s most active volcanoes and may even top the list.
OVER THE VOLCANO
Lava flow captured on Webcam Looking for lava flowing in and around Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park can often be a frustrating pursuit: As dramatic as the steaming vents of Kīlauea can be, it’s often unsafe, impractical or expensive (e.g. helicopter flights) to get a really good look in person at glowing, molten rock. But browsers of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Webcam have been rewarded this time with spectacular scenes of a lava pond in Halema’uma’u Crater filling, draining and refilling, similar to the Dec. 28, 2009, event captured in the Quicktime movie pictured below.
This video footage of Volcano is available at our Facebook Page.

TRAVEL

R E V U O C N A V V
ancouver needs more than a day, but its bite-sized neighborhoods – easily reached by metro or bus – allow plenty of experience with a single day to explore. Just give yourself time to look up – even long-time locals are swooned by the glimpse of snow-capped mountains peeking between downtown skyscrapers.
COFFEE & BREAKFAST: Vancouver’s a big coffee town. West of the center, Commercial Drive, is the epicenter of java, but opt for arty Granville Island to start the day. Just south of downtown (and reachable by bus), Agro Café (tel 604-6690724; 1363 Railspur Alley) is a tucked-away place loved by locals for its heaping and hearty Organic Brekkie. GRANVILLE SHOPPING: Shopping’s good around the area, and a seaside promenade rimmed with houseboats circles the small island. One stop is the covered Public Market has stalls serving tea, artisan items – and you can take a snacking tour with Edible BC. Galleries line Cartwright Street, while backstreet Railspur Alley is named after an old train line still embedded in its sidewalk. SOMA SHOPPING: Walk or bus south a couple blocks into South Granville and take Bus No 84 into South Main (SoMa), the city’s hippest indie shopping scene – start around the intersection of Main St and 20th Ave. Smoking Lily (3634 Main St) goes for an art-school cool clothes, while Twigg & Hottie (3671 Main St) fancies its fashions as distinctly BC in style. DOWNTOWN LUNCH & ART: Head northwest into downtown, grabbing an organic burger at downtown’s favorite counterstool, jukebox-at-the-table diner Templeton (tel 604-685-4612;
1087 Granville St), then walk a couple blocks north to see the Vancouver Art Gallery, the city’s leading art space. The space hosts blockbuster shows, plus many innovative exhibits from its own 10,000 artworks – and has a great alfresco café as well. Notable is its quarterly late-night party called FUSE. CHINATOWN DINNER: Vancouver’s Chinatown is Canada’s best – thus North America’s best. It’s great on weekend nights for the night market along Keefer St, a tight bazaar with live music, noodles and bubble tea – great for a quick, cheap meal. If you want something more sit-down and formal, Hon’s Wun-Tun House (tel 604-688-0871; 268 E Keefer St) is a Chinatown legend for 300 menu items including dim sum, dumplings and congee rice porridge. GASTOWN PUB CRAWL: Just northwest of Chinatown, Gastown is a historic, cobblestone-street area east of downtown that’s undergoing a long-awaited comeback and is now home to Vancouver’s best watering holes. The landmark Steamworks Brewing Company – made from a converted warehouse – is one of the city’s few brewpubs, and the only subterreanean one. Smaller-scale (and hipper) is the patio seating at Six Acres, a couple blocks east at Maple Leaf Square, by the neighborhood’s first bar owner ‘Gassy’ Jack Deighton.

s with most agricultural pursuits the wine industry is dependent on climate for its quality. It is a given that temperatures in Australia are rising. Rising temperature results in a shorter (up to a month) growing season. This earlier ripening of grapes can, depending on the
region, mean ripening in a hotter month, eg March rather than April, as may happen in South Australia’s Coonawarra. Add to the equation more heat waves, less water, high salinity and the problem magnifies. What to do? Either move to a cooler site/ region or grow warmer climate grape varieties.
Godello • A rare white grape from Spain that smells and tastes of baked apples and peach skin/blossom Assyrtiko • A powerful, bone dry, almost aggressive white from Greece that tastes slightly peppery and ends with a lemon zest sing Catarratto • This bright soft white from Sicily used to be made into Marsala. It smells of peach and talc and has spicy, green melon flavours. Alicante

This dish is a complete meal by itself - being rich in proteins and other nutrients added from the spices. Hence does not need a elaborate side dish. Simple Raita made with low fat curd is more than enough.
CHOICES What follow is a short list of grape varieties that are suited to Australia’s warmer climate.

FOOD can elevate MOOD
N
utrition plays a major role in the onset, severity and the duration of depression. A closer look at the diet of depressed people shows they aren’t eating enough nutrients. So, the first step to beat depression is to address nutritional deficiency: * Be smart about the carbs: The production of serotonin and tryptophan chemicals associated with well-being are triggered by carbohydrate-rich diets. Go for fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fibre-rich foods that raise blood sugar gradually and have a lasting effect on the brain rather than simple sugars that only provide temporary relief. * And the fats: The membranes of the brain cells contain a high concentration of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Eat walnuts, flaxseeds, canola oil and deep sea fish such as tuna, mackerel and salmon. * As for protiens: When the diet lacks in amino acids (building blocks of proteins), production of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, associated with good mood, get suppressed. To ensure a balance of these chemicals, eat protein-rich foods like dairy products, fish, eggs and beans with carbohydrate-rich foods. * The right vitamins and minerals: B complex vitamins affect energy
supply to the brain and are vital for people with anxiety and depression. Vitamin B12 and folate improve mental abilities and enhances the effect of antidepressants. Selenium improves mood and lowers anxiety levels. It is found in beans, legumes, lean meats, and nuts. Vitamin D increases the level of ‘feel-good’ hormone serotonin. Zinc, found in pumpkin seeds, poultry, lean meat and fish is linked to depression and a diminished sense of taste. It is a first line defense against free radical damage and improves the effect of anti-depressants. * And finally: Treat yourself to 3-4 pieces of dark chocolate a day if you’re feeling low. It produces ‘feelgood’ hormones endorphins and serotonin. Cut down on caffeine, alcohol and drugs to improve sleep quality.
Avocado Raita
L.A. Burger DIRECTIONS Bobby's Perfect Patty Shape 6 ounces of 80 percent lean ground beef chuck into a uniform patty, no more than 3/4 inch thick (don't overwork the meat). Make a depression in the center with your thumb so the burger won't bulge; the indent will rise as the patty cooks. Preheat a grill or cast-iron grill pan to high. Brush the burger with canola oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill until golden brown and slightly charred, turning once (7 minutes for medium-rare). Avoid pressing with a spatula! Add cheese for the last minute of cooking. Cheese: Your pick: Monterey Jack is a California favorite, but Bobby loves this burger with cheddar, too. Avocado Relish: Avocado is one of Bobby's favorite ingredients. He mixes 2 chopped Hass avocados with 1/2 diced small onion, 1 minced jalapeno, the juice of 1 lime, 3 tablespoons chopped cilantro, and salt and pepper. Watercress: L.A. doesn't do iceberg lettuce, so Bobby tops off the burger with this peppery green instead. Tomato: One thick, juicy slice takes the place of ketchup.

I have countless happy childhood memories of myself wolfing down embarrassing numbers of delicious Parathas (pictured above) stuffed or plain - on weekend mornings! How could I help it? They were after all, as I said earlier, delicious! The great thing about wholesome, filling stuffed Parathas, besides the fact that they are yummy, is that they are a meal in one dish, so to speak. All you need (and often you don't) is a nice pickle or yogurt salad to go with them and you're in business. -- By Petrina Dear Readers, now you can also send us your Food Blogs to us on mail@ indian-times.com.au . Meet new Kapoor Girl in B-town A
After a promising start with CHOCOLATE and AASHIQ BANAYA AAPNE, Tanushree Dutta could have played safe by picking up boy-meets-girl romantic comedies. However, she surprised many by signing a film like RAQEEB where she played a negative character. She is continuing the trend of being unconventional with the twin release of ROKKK and APARTMENT round the corner. One wonders though that while quite a few actors in the industry would have loved to have an image built around them, especially during their early years in the industry, shouldn’t she feel happy that courtesy AASHIQ BANAYA AAPNE and CHOCOLATE, she had actually make a head start in this direction? In fact when one would have expected her to capitalize on this image, why is she even thinking of running away from it and doing something different?
Shakti Kapoor and Shivangi Kapoor’s nineteen year old daughter.
midst all the buildup about Ambika Hinduja production, and Amitabh Bachchan starrer Teen Patti, directed by Leena Yadaav, there’s one more face that’s catching everyone’s fancy these days, albeit the secrecy woven around her. The buzz is, debutante Shraddha Kapoor, is too stunning to be kept under wraps for too long.
Naturally, expectations are high, considering her lineages are not less than any other star kid. With aunt Padmini Kolhapure, grand father Pt. Pandharinath Kolhapure and Lata Mangeshkar (her mother Shivangi is Lataji’s niece) the debutant is all set to strike.
This new Kapoor beauty enters Bollywood close on the heels of Ranbir and Sonam Kapoor. Whether Teen Patti, where she plays a rockstar in a rock band, will decide her fate in Bollywood is yet to be seen, the truth is, Bollywood has already laid the red carpet for
“That’s not the case at all”, protests Tanushree, “I am not running away anywhere. But then you know what, Bollywood has this tendency to slot you in no time and this is where I feel I need to show a different facet of my personality and acting caliber. A perception is built that you cannot perform or you don’t have a right to be in a film which is performance based. This is something what I wanted to change and I am glad that this has slowly but steadily happened.”
Shraddha’s freshness has already bagged her plum roles in Sanjay Leela Bhansali production opposite Prateik Babbar and Nagarjuna’s son Nag Chaitanya even before her debut film is released.

Atihi tum kab jaoge ?
AKON to make his bollywood debut with SRK
`Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge?`; Music Directors: Pritam Chakraborty and Amit Mishra; Lyricist: Irshad Kamil; Singers: Raghubir Yadav, Ajay Jhingran, Rajneesh, Amit Mishra and Sukhwinder Singh; Rating: **
According to sources both the director and his lead actor of the film Shahrukh, wanted an international star to be part of the film which is a high-end SFX movie.
The soundtrack of `Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge?`, which stars Ajay Devgn and Konkana Sen Sharma, sounds more like a devotional album with three of the five songs being in praise of the almighty.
Buzz is that recently when SRK was visiting the US, he had a meeting with the pop star and Akon expressed his willingness to be part of a Bollywood production. Akon has been signed for some unknown price and will be lending his voice in the SRK starrer that also features Kareena Kapoor in the lead.
Acclaimed international singer Akon will soon make his Bollywood debut in Anubhav Sinha’s upcoming film RA.ONE.
The album contains five originals and one remix. “Aaja aaja” crooned by Raghubir Yadav, Ajay Jhingran and Rajneesh, is an amalgamation of folk influences with western orchestration. The fast-paced number is more of a situational track than something that can be hummed. The song also has a re-mixed version, which offers nothing great and is average. Next is the title track of the film, where Amit Mishra steps in as composer and singer. This is the song currently doing the rounds of various TV channels. Trying to be funny with its lyrics and the way the vocals are presented, the song is a one-time hear. It`s an ordinary number with
no retention value. Up next is “Dohay”. Sung by Amit Mishra again, it is a soft version of poems and couplets written by wellknown poets. Then there is “Jyoti jalaile”, a devotional version of the hit item song “Beedi jalaile” from the film “Omkara”. This version too is sung by Sukhwinder Singh. The song is sung in praise of goddess Durga. Finally, we have another religious
offering in the guise of “Sukh Karta”, an offering to Lord Ganesh. This one too has Amit Mishra behind the mike. On the whole, there is nothing much for music buffs in the album. The soundtrack is situational and will not boast of any chartbusters. The songs are very unlike those created by Pritam earlier.
C
omposer duo Salim and Sulaiman Merchant have crafted an apt soundtrack for director Leena Yadav’s suspense thriller “Teen Patti” starring Amitabh Bachchan and Hollywood veteran Ben Kingsley.

“Annu Malek, Sunidhi Chauhan and Salim Merchant (of composer duo Salim-Sulaiman) will be the judges for `Indian Idol 5`,” a source from Sony TV told.
The show, to be hosted by “Indian Idol 1” winner Abhijeet Sawant and former participant Prajakta Shukre, is expected to go on air in April this year.
It has six originals and two remixes and the music comes across as edgy, dark and truly international. The album starts with “Life is a game” that is presented in two versions - English and Hindi. The English version is crooned by Sonia Saigal that is interspersed with dialogues in Amitabh’s baritone voice.
Then there is “Neeyat kharab hai”, a slow song that flows at its own leisure pace. It is sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, who has done a commendable job by modulating her voice to create a sense of mystery and thrill. The video of the song is currently on air and it is at its seductive best. The song also has a remix version, which is equally good with elements of electronica. The version has a few lines by Amitabh and also entails portions of rap. It is quite catchy and will set everyone grooving.
Singer Sunidhi Chauhan, whose career took off after she featured in a music reality show years ago, will now take centrestage as one of the three judges oi the fifth season of `Indian Idol`.
The show will be a first time experience for Sunidhi, who won “Meri Awaaz Suno” in 1996, as a full-fledged judge for any reality show. Salim, on the other hand, has been a judge for show “Chak De Bachche”. But “Indian Idol” will be a completely new ballgame for him too.
Teen-Patti The Hindi song has another addition in the guise of Anushka Manchanda. It has a dramatic element that makes it sound truly international. It is chic and stylish. Next in line is “Summertime” by Joe Alvares. The lyrics are in English and Alvares impresses with his range.
SUNIDHI to be a judge on “INDIAN IDOL 5”
Hollywood singer Lisbeth Scott sings for Indian film LAHORE Up next is the title track “Teen patti ke gulam” with composer Salim Merchant behind the mike. The upbeat song revolving around gambling is fast paced with psychedelic beats. However, it is average. The re-mixed version of the track has more beats attached to it. Finally, the soundtrack offers “Intezar me chupa kahin” in the voice of Naresh Kamat. The song starts off slowly but picks up pace and culminates into a rock anthem. Strong orchestration makes the song impactful. On the whole, the album is meant for a niche audience and is truly international in its approach. Salim and Sulaiman have given music that perfectly gels with the theme of the film.
www.indian-times.com.au
Nominated for many Grammy Awards and Academy Awards, world renowned Hollywood singer and songwriter, Lisbeth Scott has lent her melodious voice for the very first time for an Asian film and that is too in an India film LAHORE. She has sung for endless Hollywood blockbusters like AVATAR, SHERLOCK HOLMES, TRANSFORMERS, INDIANA JONES and THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END, SHREK, THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, CASINO ROYALE, THE DA VINCI CODE, MUNICH, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, TERMINATOR 3, SPIDER-MAN, and PEARL HARBOR to name a few and soon could be listened in Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan’s LAHORE while singing the opening alaap for the film. LAHORE will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and will release on 19th March, 2010.

Shah Rukh to sing & dance for KKR Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said he would sing and dance to cheer his Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team during all the seven matches at Eden Gardens in the third edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) next month. “I will sing, I will dance, I will be there to cheer up the boys,” KKR co-owner King Khan told reporters via video-conference. SRK, as Shah Rukh is popularly known, had gone to South Africa to encourage his side during the first five matches of the IPL last year. He said KKR, in association with Nokia, will host Para (neighbourhood) cricket to create a platform for a new generation of cricketers.
MITTAL VS MITTAL deals with MARITAL RAPE ISSUE Filmmaker Karan Razdan is making a social statement with his upcoming film MITTAL VS MITTAL that deals with the issue of marital rape. Though, much has been written about this film, but this time the filmmaker has a new game plan. Elaborating his new strategy, the filmmaker says, “MITTAL VS MITTAL will be screened specially for politicians, social groups and women’s right activists to raise awareness about this issue that needs to be brought out of the closet. Very soon we will go on a nationwide screening campaign to raise awareness about the issue of marital rape.” The issue of the marital rape has sparked many debates in the past. But, MITTAL VS MITTAL will be the first in mainstream Bollywood film that seeks to find a solution to this problem that is little spoken about in the open. The film has been in the making for some time. Finally, it’s all set to release. The cast of the film includes Rohit Roy, Suchitra Krishnamurthy and Rituparna Sen Gupta.

Salman Khan in a Kareena Kapoor casting for GOLMAAL 3 legal hassle S
alman Khan is once again trapped in a legal hassle. Complaint has been lodged against him by a handicapped woman named Phoolbanu Shaikh, 30 saying that Salman Khan has used her photograph that was clicked with him to promote his film, ‘Veer’. She is now seeking a compensation of Rs 25 lakh from the actor. He has also denied the report that listening to her sad story, Salman Khan has donated Rs one lakh to her. Phoolbanu’s lawyer has registered a Non Cognisable (NC) offence against the actor at V P Road police station for using a physically challenged woman’s picture for promoting his film. Phoolbanu narrated that last year in March when she went to meet Salman
Khan at his residence, she was told that Salman was shooting at the Mehboob studio. To fulfill her wish, she went there. The security did not allow her to meet Salman but on hearing some commotion, Salman came out of his vanity van and met her. “He chatted with us for some time and told us to take photographs with him. Since we were not carrying camera, a crew member at the shooting had clicked our pictures and we were told the photos would be delivered to us later,” she said.
You heard it right. Kareena Kapoor is not only acting in the film GOLMAAL 3 but these days the actress is actively involved in the casting of the film too. Now, latest reports suggest that Kareena Kapoor wants actor Kunal Khemu to be part of the film. To do this, Kareena has recommended Kunal’s name to the director of the film Rohit Shetty, who seems to be considering the suggestion seriously.
If you wonder why Kareena is promoting Kunal Khemu of all the people, then you must know that Kunal is Soha Ali Khan’s current boyfriend and Kareena Kapoor is making sure that she is playing her role well in the Nawab family.

ivek Oberoi seems to have had a ball shooting for Kookie Gulati’s ‘Prince’. His closeness to co-star Neeru Bajwa was rather talked about but it now looks like he’s also quite intimate with Aruna Shields, the lead actress of Prince. The duo got intimate after they filmed for a kissing scene in Prince. According to sources, they were seen spending quite a lot of time together and got along really well too. Though it is unknown if they are in a serious relationship, seeing as Aruna has returned to the UK, from where she hails, it seems she will be returning once the film nears release. Wow, looks like someone’s scored a girl here, doesn’t it? Good to go, Vivek!

The girl in Aditya Narayan’s life The gossip mills can’t seem to be getting enough of the latest couple to hit town - the lovely Shweta Agarwal and Aditya Narayan (Udit Narayan’s son) both of whom will debut in Vikram Bhatt’s SHAAPIT. We come to hear that the two started seeing each other since the beginning of the filming and can’t seem to get enough of each other. Reveals a production source, “Shweta and Aditya got very close during the shoots and would spend a lot of time with each other rehearsing lines, spending lunch

SHAAPIT promises a unique look and feel
n 1920, Vikram had attempted some innovative shot taking techniques with at least a couple of scenes standing out as ‘never seen before’, at least in Bollywood. Going by the subject and setting, Vikram insists that SHAAPIT will have a little more razzmatazz to it. “One has to go by the setting of the film”, reasons Vikram who has tasted success in horror genre earlier with RAAZ hitting the bull’s eye, “1920 was shot more in a classic format and the feel remained throughout since we didn’t want people to come out of that period. In SHAAPIT though,
there is a little more razzmatazz since there is lot more that happens in the proceedings.” He doesn’t forget to add about the modern day technique that has been put to use in shooting SHAAPIT. “Whether it is sound, frame cutting, lens placement or camera movement, I have thoroughly worked on each of these factors to give a unique look and feel to SHAAPIT”, says Vikram who is launching Aditya Narayan (singer Udit Narayan’s son) along with Shweta Agarwal in this horror thriller. SHAAPIT releases all over on 19th March.

times together etc. It was bound to happen” Our sources also reveal that recently at a common friend’s birthday Shweta and Aditya were seen getting cozy on the dance floor. “Shweta and Aditya were the cynosure of all the eyes at the party. They enjoyed spending time together and look very much the item they are,” adds the source. We’re sure the off-screen sparks will translate into great on-screen chemistry!
Sunny’s ‘Dhai Kilo Ka Haath’ still going strong! The dialogue ‘dhai kilo ka haath’, unofficially ‘patented’ by Sunny Deol, is still fresh in the memories of many of us. In fact, the dialogue even today gives goose bumps the moment one watches Rajkumar Santoshi’s well-liked and powerful ‘Damini’. We wonder whether Sunny’s hands still weigh the same. Let us hear from the horse’s mouth. “I am not sure if it is ‘dhai kilo’
or a few grams less or more, ” exclaims Sunny smilingly. The Punjabi Puttar literally went ‘pani pani’ i.e. shied away while answering to that. Has this ‘dayi kilo ka haath’ hit anybody? If yes, it sure would have been one excruciating experience. The possibility of a big NO is far more believable considering the shy nature of Sunny Paaji. What say Sunny?

The cat is out of the bag. Ekta Kapoor and her director Milan Luthria were looking for a neo-Helen for the longest time. The original plan of discovering a completely untried dancer failed as time was running out. They’ve finally zeroed in on Gauhar Khan who has been secretly jiving away to Helen’s most popular cabaret Piya tu ab to aaja for Luthria’s Once Upon A Time In The West. Raju Khan has been brought to do the choreography for what’s touted as the most expensive cabaret ever shot in Bollywood. Gauhar danced to the beats of Piya tu ab to aaja so hard last week that a shard of shattered glass wounded her leg. The director and her excited producer intend to unveil their new-age Helen and the prized recreation of the smouldering cabaret number from the 1970s at an elaborate press conference later this month.

It seems he has got inspired from Aamir Khan.” Though Abhay’s stocks are quite high in bollywood compared to a lot of actors, let’s hope the new strategy makes him the next big star.
Breaking up with lover proves lucky for Amisha Patel After she broke up with longtime boyfriend Kanav Puri, Amisha Patel is nursing her aching heart. But seeing the way things are picking up for her now, looks like the breakup wasn’t all that bad after all. Luckily for her, she doesn’t have to deal with her broken heart alone. Her mother and the rest of her family are by her side to help her deal with this. But that’s not the only good thing in Amisha’s life right now.
If that’s true, then Dino Morea must have rocked their love boat! The pictures of her and Dino, in what looked like a passionate kiss was harmless according to the actress. “I know Dino for a while now. We’ve met socially and even had a few laughs but to make it seem like there is something more is terrible,” says the curly-haired temptress. Kangna also adds, “I’m done with relationships.

f Aamir has made himself one of the biggest names to reckon with, the onus goes completely to his marketing strategy, his total involvement in the various aspects of the film and above all his total focus on the job at hand.
If sources are to be believed, a few big filmmakers approached Amisha last week with some good roles. She has even postponed her pending vacation for later, now that she has some good projects on her hand. Amisha had apparently split with Kanav because she wasn’t ready to be married and wanted to give her career another shot. Doesn’t it look like she has her chance now? Maybe her split was for a good reason after all…

nternational news agencies will be forced to skip this year’s Indian Premier League unless there is a change to the accreditation norms which govern journalist and photographer attendance. News Media Coalition, an international body that monitors specific threat to editorial operations from excessive controls imposed by sporting events, said in a statement that IPL coverage would be affected unless there is a change to the media rules. “Without changes international

C
ricket writer Sir Neville Cardus said of Sir Don Bradman, “The power of genius in cricket is not to be measured by the scoreboard, and not even by the clock.” Cardus felt Sir Don was “like the trapeze performer who one night decided to commit suicide by flinging himself headlong to the stage, but could not achieve the error because his skill had become infallible, a routine and mechanical habit not at the beck and call of anything so volatile as human will or impulse.” Had Cardus been alive to watch Sachin Tendulkar’s mastery of strokes which made technique his slave at Gwalior, he would have used a romantic expression to compare the two greats. Illogical
est cricket should switch to a day-night format or face extinction, according to Lalit Modi, the chairman of the Indian Premier League. In an interview, Modi says the Test game could disappear if it does not accept such a radical change. “Yes, it could happen because the broadcaster won’t be interested,” he said. “Whether we like it or not, broadcasting determines whether a game survives. Without broadcasters you don’t have money to pay players or keep the sport alive.”
After what Bradman said of Tendulkar a few years ago, for Nasser Hussain to say that Tendulkar is greater than Bradman is illogical as the two are from totally different eras. However, their methods of destroying the opponents have been similar.
“I am a great supporter of Test cricket,” Modi added. “People say I’m not but I also run the marketing department of the BCCI [the Indian Board of Control] and Test cricket is extremely important to us. All I am trying to do is remind people that we live in a modern age and Test cricket has a big problem: it is played in the day-time when most people are working.

evin Pietersen could miss the climax of England’s attempt to win the World Twenty20 in May when he returns home from the tournament to attend the birth of his first child. Pietersen’s wife, Jessica Taylor,, a former singer with the pop group Liberty X, is due to give birth in mid-May and the player’s commitment to being at the birth could affect his involvement in the later stages of a tournament that runs from 30 April to 16 May in the West Indies.
Alastair Cook, who is standing in as captain for Andrew Strauss in Bangladesh after forcing his way back into England’s 50-over side, does not even make the World Twenty20 long list.

The uninhibited strokeplay that Tendulkar exhibited at 12, playing in The Sportstar under-17 Mumbai Cricket Association’s selection trial tournament 25 years ago continued until the tennis elbow dented his selfbelief to some extent and made him a little cautious about the strokes that he was so adept at playing irrespective of situations. The boyish enthusiasm that one saw when this little fellow was ready much before the openers in the selection trial tournament hasn’t diminished one bit; but when things weren’t going his way, he did attract greats like Kapil Dev to say that he shouldn’t change his approach. Sir Richard Hadlee had endorsed Kapil’s observations. This column too had mentioned his low percentage of match-winning innings because of the change in his approach. Tendulkar is not the one to get rattled by criticism; if he
www.indian-times.com.au
accepts, his thought process alters his approach. If criticism isn’t of any substance, without any fuss he ignores it. The winning percentage is now gradually climbing. Initially when his grip became the talking point among the connoisseurs of the game on the lawns of the CCI in Mumbai, he didn’t tamper with it. His logic was simple; why change something that brought 2,300 runs in a season when he was 12! The year 2010 seems to have brought about a huge change in his approach. The cupboard of his strokes was never bare; all he had to do was ensure that he was there mentally to unleash strokes with regularity and a stamp of authority. Unimpeded artistry To him, the geometry of batsmanship is more important than dwelling on records. The artistry of batting is now running unimpeded in his veins. His body language at the crease says it all. To quote Cardus, again on Bradman, “perhaps by making a duck some day, Bradman will oblige those of his critics who believe in Lord Bacon that there should always be some strangeness, something unexpected, mingled with art and beauty”. Tendulkar and failure? As former national selector Naren Tamhane, when asked by the chairman of the selection committee Raj Singh Dungarpur whether the 15-year-old Tendulkar would succeed on his first tour of Pakistan against Imran Khan and Wasim Akram, said: “Tendulkar never fails”. No sign of failure Two decades later, there is no sign of failure. The way he is going about, 2011 is not going to be his last year in cricket. Let’s wait and watch. There is more enjoyment in store. Tendulkar is dominating bowlers again and that’s bad news for them.

ACTIVE WOMEN GIVE BIRTH TO SMARTER KIDS
R
esearchers say active women give birth to smarter kids and they are all set to prove it.
Canadian researchers at the University of Montreal say studies on animals already prove it, and they have now taken the task of proving it in humans. According to their hypothesis, the researchers say, pregnant women who exercise three times a week can give birth to babies with better memories. To prove their hypothesis, they have enrolled 60 newly pregnant women, a university statement said.
“Our hypothesis is that mothers who exercise during pregnancy will have newborns with more mature cognitive functions, particularly long-term memory,” said researcher Elise Labonte-Lemoyne, who is coordinating the study with neuropsychologist Dave Ellemberg. The study will be conducted on the selected 60 women, aged between 20 and 35 years and first-time pregnant, during pregnancy and later with newborns. The mental abilities of newborns will be measured using an electroencephalogram 10 days after birth, the researchers said.
“We will place a small net covered with sensors on the babies’ heads to measure the cerebral activity,” said Ellemberg. “The procedure is painless and lasts no more than 15 minutes. We can even do it as the babies sleep,” he said. He said the women will be split into two equal groups - one inactive and the other active with about 20 minutes of physical activity three times per week. “We’re not expecting women who are eight months’ pregnant to run a marathon. A bit of exercise is better than none at all, while a bit more is better than just a bit,” Ellemberg said.
“
My goal: “To keep doing things I’m doing, and in order to do that, I like to keep myself active and in good condition.”
My lifestyle: “I work 9 to 5, five days a week,” says the non-smoker who’s had six beers in his life. “I cut out fat and salt. I eat dark chocolate, I don’t eat pastries or [have] soft drinks. Breakfast is instant oatmeal, flax bread with peanut butter and coffee. Lunch and dinner is mostly chicken - I have red meat once a week - with lots of veggies and salad to go with it. I eat five fruits a day. I drink 100-per-cent orange, cranberry, and watermelon juice - lots of antioxidants. I can’t resist Bing cherries.” My motivation: “To see how long my present program can last. I hope to do it at 85 as well. I want to see how far I can go.”
All you need to concentrate.

or HR consultant Nikita Behl, life is fantastic. A star performer at work, she has nothing to complain about. Apart from one thing, that is. She just cannot concentrate on anything. “I am very fidgety and restless. I keep thinking of a million things at the same time,” she says. So what’s wrong with that? Well, says Nikita. In her hurry to finish one job and get on to the next, she fails to concentrate on any. This leads to errors and jobs badly done. Blame the fast pace of our lives, say experts. Few of us these days are exempt from a short attention span, and that’s because we have stressed and overactive minds, says psychologist Bhawna Mehra.
But attention issues are not tough to work on. “All it takes is a deliberate effort to concentrate and relieve your mind of undue stress and negativity,” says psychologist Seema Hingorrany. That sounds easy, but is it? It could be, if you learn to manage your time a little better, acquire a positive attitude – and approach the problem like this. Start slow When you begin the day, say experts, do it in a relaxed way. “If you get up in a hurry and rush to work, your energies get wasted right at the start,” says Hingorrany. “The urgent need to get to your workplace doesn’t let you concentrate on how exactly you want to go about completing the day’s jobs. So you lose focus, wasting a lot of time.

strange thing happened to John Weingust after he started skiing at 33. As he continued to exercise, he became fitter and functioned better, living out the adage that it’s never too late to begin getting in shape. Lawyer John Weingust’s fit at Prior to getting into the best 79 formula: karate, slalom and shape of his life, eight years Haagen-Dazs of law school had put his body in hibernation. Then at 39, he took up tae kwon do, earning a fifth-degree black belt. Four marathons followed in his late 40s. Five years later, Mr. Weingust turned to track and field and won a seniors’ pentathlon. This month, the 79-year-old litigator celebrates his 11th year of karate.

I don’t belong to a gym, but I have a stationary bike and weekends I cycle outdoors. “I did tae kwon do for 30 years, after that I switched to karate and I do that once a week. I have a cottage in Collingwood where I hike and cycle the Bruce Trail in summer. I’m a member of the ski club and do slalom races. Last year I won my category as a senior racer. I’m skiing better now than 10 years ago.”

Most of us schedule lists in our heads of things to be done. But while work discipline is always a good idea, it’s important to understand that everything cannot go like clockwork every day. “Not everything will fall into its perfect place every day and not everything can be done as routinely as it’s usually done,” adds Hingorrany. “So it’s essential to let go and take things as they come. You need to stop getting hyper about nonresolvable issues such as a traffic jam or waking up late. Rather, focus on how to make the best of the time you have left.”
Take a break
Breakfast well
Stub it out
Breakfast is the first thing you dump when you’re in a rush, but if you want to improve your ability to focus, you must eat well. “The body needs sugar and glucose as fuel every day,” says Bhawna Mehra. “A healthy breakfast provides all the necessary elements to help you sort out problems. Most important, it gives your body the energy to start the day. It also de-clogs the mind.”
A lot of people feel cigarettes help them concentrate better. But that is incorrect, say experts. “Nicotine may give an immediate kick but in the long run, it makes you restless and impatient,” says Hingorrany. “This leads to a hyperactive mind and you lose focus. So avoid cigarettes. Instead, take a bite of chocolate when you feel the need for a smoke. The sugar will satiate the need.”
To help you function better, make sure your daily diet includes an adequate dose of vitamin B12, as it plays a key role in the normal functioning of your brain and nervous system. “It’s generally found in meat products, so most vegetarians have a vitamin B12 deficiency,” says Mehra. “So they
Drink it slow
The minute you feel that you’re losing concentration, get up and take a break. Micro-breaks within the work area are as important as weekend breaks outside the office, says Hingorrany. “With millions of things happening around us, it is only normal to start thinking about other things or looking elsewhere while we are engaged on some task. Drop whatever you are doing and take a walk, chat with friends, finish a phone call or have a coffee. A break is always refreshing.”
When you feel you’re losing track, sip water or lemon juice very slowly. “Water and lemon water help calm you down,” says Mehra. “Sip slowly and deliberately to soothe your nerves. An overactive mind is a sign of a stressed mind and it is essential to put it at peace.

CONSTIPATION
>> Raj Kothuru
IN YOUNG CHILDREN Homeopathic Help
C
onstipation is when a person has difficulty passing a bowel motion (stool) causing pain and discomfort. Clinically if a person did not had a stool for 48 hours, then he/she is constipated. Childhood constipation is when a child has a hard stool (faeces or bowel movement) or faeces difficulty when going to the toilet.
CHILDREN:
constipation.
• The child says it hurts when going to the toilet.
• Ignore the urge to go to the toilet because the child is too busy playing.
• The child might show signs of holding on, like crossing legs, running around, crying or refusing to sit on the toilet etc
• Holding back during toilet training due to fear
• The child might complain of tummy pain
Constipation is a common problem in children, particularly around the time of toilet training or after a painful or frightening bowel movement.
• The child sometimes might soil their pants (mostly in ongoing constipation)
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE:
• Stomach cramps (on and off)
Parents should understand that there may be a lot of difference in the firmness and frequency of bowel movements in normal children and constipation has nothing to do with how often the child goes to toilet. Parents, in most cases, only need to worry about the above only if they seem to be causing problems to the child. Some children may use their bowels only one to two times a week, while others do so every day. If this is a child’s normal pattern, and it does not have any pain when going to the toilet and the stool is not hard, there is no reason to be concerned. SYMPTOMS OF CONSTIPATION IN
Other symptoms may be: • Less hunger • Irritable behaviour • Anal fissures causing pain and bleeding at the anus when passing stool (caused due to straining) CAUSES OF CONSTIPATION:
CHILDHOOD
Reasons / causes may not be clear all the time but may include: • Too much milk intake and not enough solids (causes lack of fiber) results in constipation. • Anal fissure causing the child to hold back from going to toilet due to fear of pain, bleeding etc. In most cases Anal Fissure itself is a result of chronic
• Family history • Reluctance to use some toilet facilities on a prolonged basis (school etc) due to various reasons • Reduced water intake, too much processed food, excess cow’s milk etc. • Natural tendency of having slow gut movement which causes constipation. • Diseases (rare) such as certain metabolic disorders, absence of nerve endings in bowel, spinal defects etc. LIFE STYLE CHANGES: A healthy diet, enough water, playful exercise, correct toilet training and regular toilet habits are important to prevent and help treat constipation in children. It is important for constipated children to develop the habit of sitting on the toilet regularly. ‘Toilet’ time should be set aside to allow for regular, undisturbed visits to the toilet. Parental support and encouragement
is vital to alleviate any fears or painful associations the child might have. Children should be given fibre rich fruit each day with peel left on (apple, plum, prune, peach etc) and healthy vegetables, wholemeal cereals etc. CONSTIPATION IN INFANTS: An infant may be constipated if it has gone three to four days without a stool. Parents can easily know this because the infant often becomes uncomfortable and needs help stooling. The bottle milk formula may need to be changed, however I insist that the best is mother’s milk. A breastfed baby will very rarely get constipation because breast milk is more easily digested. The parent can very gently do a little bicycling movement and knee to chest position for the baby to relax the rectum. And take help of highly effective Homeopathic remedies when nothing else helps.
Very specific remedies exist. Some examples are: Calcarea carbonica for children who experience painless constipation, Lycopodium when the child is gassy as well, Nux vomica, when there is cramping and when the child cries out in anger.
HOMEOPATHIC HELP:
(However pls note that self medication is highly unadvisable for any ailment). Yogasanas such as Pavanamukta asana, Surya namaskara will be a fun way to introduce children to the benefits of yoga and also help greatly to relieve constipation in children.
Many parents and also physicians trained in holistic medicine today are relying on Homeopathic remedies to treat constipation in babies because they are safe, effective and have no harmful side effects. Homeopathy also works best for cases with a family history of constipation.
