Rupee hits near 2-month low, ends marginally stronger

T

he rupee hit the lowest level in nearly two months on Monday before closing marginally stronger with exporter and corporate dollar sales aiding the recovery, though sentiment continues to remain bearish in the near term. Traders said disappointment over the budget last week is likely to hurt the rupee in the near term with fundamentals such as a record current account deficit likely to keep the downward pressure on the currency. India unveiled a surge in

March 2013 Edition

government spending despite expectations of an austerity budget to shore up its finances, while failing to announce any measures that would significantly boost investments. ”Initial weakness in the rupee was due to the budget disappointment. The flows helped the rupee recover despite euro and share weakness, but we may target 55.50 later this week,” said Subramanian Sharma, director at Greenback Forex. “Any small corrections will be seen as an opportunity to buy with importers rushing in to cover. I am broadly expect-

ing a range of 54.60 to 55.50 till March-end with the bias on the weaker side,” he added. The partially convertible rupee closed at 54.86/87 per dollar versus its previous close of 54.90/91 on Friday. The unit dropped earlier to a low of 55.15, the weakest since Jan. 8. Traders said the pair opened sharply below the 55 mark, having closed above the 200-day moving average on Friday and after breaking the 61.8 percent Fibonacci retracement of the November to February decline at 54.74.

However, USD/INR should see good technical resistance at around 55.15, ahead of the 55.89 peak in November. Traders said the weakness in the euro and domestic shares also hurt the rupee though good dollar selling by exporters and a corporate helped it recover. The euro fell to a session low on Monday and not far from a 2-1/2 month trough after eurozone sentiment tumbled in March and added to speculation that the European Central Bank may lower rates in the near term.

Indian shares fell to near 3-month lows as global risk aversion sparked broad-based selling in domestic blue chips. In the offshore non-deliverable forwards, the one-month contract was at 55.30 and the three-month was at 55.92. In the currency futures market, the most-traded nearmonth dollar/rupee contracts on the National Stock Exchange, the MCX-SX and the National Stock Exchange all closed at 55.13 with a total traded volume of $5.9 billion.

BJP undecided on Modi as PM

G

ujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Rajnath Singh held an hour-long discussion on Sunday on the future course of the party ahead of the 2014 polls. The fact that their meeting took place at Singh’s residence after curtains fell on the BJP’s conclave led to speculations about its outcome and the future role of the Gujarat strongman.

What is significant is that they met against the backdrop of the conclave’s closing session in which BJP leader LK Advani ignored Modi in large chunks of his valedictory address, choosing instead to praise other top leaders, including Sushma Swaraj. BJP sources did not say whether Modi and Singh discussed this development, which was quickly read as Advani’s disapproval of any

move to declare the Gujarat CM for the prime minister’s post. In 2006, Singh inducted Modi to BJP’s parliamentary board. A year later, he dropped him as no other BJP CM was a member. Singh, on his return as BJP chief, said that he did not think it was right to drop Modi on that ground. Insiders say the big question is whether Modi himself would like to be in the elite club.

Modi, true to his style, is yet to reveal his desires. Alternatively, Singh may contemplate forming a top panel that will directly take charge of the 2014 campaign, and Modi would either lead or be part of it. Advani could push for Swaraj’s name, but can he oppose Modi if the RSS wants the BJP’s parliamentary board to name him? The answer could, perhaps, be yes but it also

depends when the board takes up the issue. If it is to be settled by the BJP board alone, Modi could face muted opposition, not just from Advani and Swaraj but other senior leaders too, BJP insiders say. Advani’s insistence on Swaraj’s preeminence may not favour Modi, but the mood of party cadres could push things beyond the BJP patriarch’s influence and control, BJP sources added.

China reaches out to India to safeguard its interests

E

arly this year, China reached out to India to start a dialogue on Afghanistan. This led to China, Russia and India meeting together for the first time in Moscow on February 20 to consult on Afghanistan’s future. This is the second trilateral dialogue India has started on Afghanistan — the first being with the US and Afghanistan that met a day before the ChinaRussia-India trilateral. When the Chinese leadership first approached India, New Delhi’s reaction was “why now?” The Chinese response was that they had $3 billion in investments in

March 2013 Edition

Afghanistan. Indian investments are over $2 billion. China’s approach to Afghanistan has largely been driven by its all-weather ally, Pakistan, thus far. But, China has expressed growing alarm about the possible return of the Taliban in Afghanistan that appears to be part of Pakistan’s design. Beijing is anxious about the export of extremism and terrorism into their restive Xinjiang province. Besides, the uncertainty over the 2014 US drawdown of troops has spooked all stakeholders. This has led to the every body hedging every possible outcome. US diplomatic sources said

America and China are locked in their own conversation on Afghanistan. India is engaging with Russia, China and Iran. In addition, India is ready to hold talks with Pakistan on Kabul’s future, but there is no interest from the Pakistani side. For Russia, the problem is more proximate. The prospect of Taliban and its ideology travelling into the central Asian states remains a matter of apprehension. Russia has been trying to befriend Pakistan for some time now, to incentivize Islamabad to use its influence to prevent Taliban ingress into these countries.

Russian President Vladimir Putin even contemplated a maiden visit to Pakistan last year, which could have seriously affected the IndiaRussia relationship. However, in recent months, the renewed push by western governments to accommodate the Taliban in “reconciliation” — a power-sharing arrangement in Kabul — has complicated matters for all three countries. India is deeply opposed to the reconciliation process because it believes Taliban’s extremism would overwhelm all other shades of opinion, pushing Afghanistan back to the 1990s. But Russia and China are fearful of what they believe could become a US-Taliban “deal” that allows continued American presence in Afghanistan. This they reckoned to be “destabilizing” for their future. But for India, the Chinese request was also interpreted to mean that they may also be hedging against a Pakistan-led approach to Afghanistan. Pakistan has not shown any move to divorce itself from the Taliban. Islamabad continues to harbour Afghan Taliban leaders in its territory, despite much pleading by the West to release them for talks with the Karzai government. A Taliban office has been in operation in Doha, Qatar, for some time, without the reconciliation process making much headway largely because of the lack of

credible Taliban leaders to talk with. There is talk of the US trying to directly reach out to Taliban leaders, an effort that is being replicated by UK, France and Germany. The upshot of all of this is that the Karzai government has been brought to the same level as the Taliban — it is being treated as just another faction instead of being a legitimate government in Kabul. To many countries, the legitimization of the Taliban is complete. Diplomatic sources observe that if in 2001, there were only three countries, which had recognized the Taliban, there are many more in 2013. Afghan president Hamid Karzai is swinging wildly between trying to “accommodate” the Pakistani Army’s version of the Taliban’s return, to openly criticizing them. After the head of the Pakistan Ulema Council, Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi, was quoted as saying suicide attacks in Afghanistan were legitimate, Karzai said on Sunday, “Afghanistan wants a real struggle against terrorism and wants the Pakistani government to realize that both our nations are burning in the same fire. “The Pakistani government has an essential and important role in putting out this fire,” he sad. “We see that practical steps are not being taken to fight terrorism,” Karzai added.

I am following Gandhiji’s principle of non-violence: Sharmila

A

ctivist Irom Sharmila Chanu, who was charged with attempting suicide for her fast unto death here in 2006 while demanding repeal of controversial AFSPA, said she is following Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of non-violence and should not be “discriminated” against. Chanu, while speaking to mediapersons outside the court room at Patiala House complex, said she and other residents of states affected by Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) need “peace” and “not violence” and the democratic leaders should hear her “non-violent protest”. She expressed her desire “to live a normal life” and asked why the gov-

ernment was “scared of giving her fundamental rights of a human being”. “I am just a simple woman who wants to follow the non-violent principle of Gandhiji, the father of the nation. Just treat us also like him and do not discriminate. As a leadership, don’t be biased against a human being,” the 40-year-old Manipuri activist, whose counsel had sought court’s permission to talk to media, said. Chanu was flown in to Delhi from Manipur last evening to appear before a court here which today framed charges under section 309 (attempting to commit suicide) of the IPC against her after she refused to plead guilty, saying

that hers was a non-violent protest. She told reporters that she has been protesting for past nearly 12 years for the society and is demanding the rights of a democratic citizen. “I am doing this for the society and other AFSPA affected states but we are the citizens of a democratic country and so my demand is for rights of a democratic citizen who needs justice. We need peace, not violence. Our democratic leaders should hear my non-violent protest,” she said. Chanu, who is in judicial custody and is being fed through a tube, added that Justice (retd) BP Jeevan Reddy Committee, set up to review the AFSPA, has also recommended

Darshan Driving School Melbourne

repealing of this “draconian law”. She also accused the government and the Army of “colluding for cheating” people. Chanu had launched her fast unto death in 2000 after 10 civilians were killed by Assam Rifles personnel at Malom area near Imphal airport. She had earlier said that she was confident that the government will listen to her and concede to her demand to revoke AFSPA. Asked if she was satisfied with the developments on the issue of extra judicial killings in Manipur on which Justice Santosh Hegde is conducting hearing even as the apex court has formed a probe committee, she said the government is not behaving “as a leadership which should work for society’s betterment”. “The government will remain adamant for the time being because they are not realising. They are not behav-

ing as a leadership which should work for the betterment of the people and the society,” she said. On being asked whether she wished to continue her protest “because the government does not seem to be listening”, she said “revolution will take time and it depends on the will of people. ”I am also a human being who wants peace and justice. I am against the government which uses violence as a means to govern,” she said, adding that she will also remind them of their “real responsibilities as leadership”. Expressing her desire to live a normal life, Chanu said, she is also a social being and claimed the government was “scared of giving her fundamental rights of a human being. “What I just want from them (government) is to see me as an innocent woman who loves civilisation and is a rational being...,” she said.

T

rips to Tirupati and Mantralaya, wall clocks, cooking stoves, pressure cookers and even gold studs for the ear and nose. These are just samplings of the freebies on offer to voters, ahead of Thursday’s urban local bodies election. Prospective candidates are going full throttle with the freebies in the last few hours before election to the 208 urban local bodies gets under way. Enticements range from the interesting to the downright obvious. Some candidates are also giving away hard cash ranging between Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 besides sumptuous meals to lure over 85 lakh voters ahead of the civic polls. There’s even a quirky gender spin when it comes to freebie promises. While women get ear or nose studs, saris, stoves and pressure cookers, men are lured with cash, liquor and feasts. Sources said some corporators in Gul-

barga recently gifted gold nose studs to 100 odd voters from BPL families. One sitting corporator in Hubli sent two luxury buses packed with lucky trippers to Tirupati and Mantralaya. In another classic case in Bellary, police seized a truck transporting wall clocks with BSR Congress chief B Sreeramulu’s pictures. A case has been booked for violation of the election code of conduct. In another incident, a Congress candidate Venkateshulu had allegedly arranged food to be served to voters at an unauthorized office in an under-construction building in Vidyanagar of Bellary. Do such freebies ensnare voters? Political observers don’t think so. “There is no ideology in politics any longer. The voters also know that and they take goodies from candidates irrespective of the party and finally vote for the one they can look up to,” said Rajendra Kalmakar of Belgaum.

Vijay Mallya loses crown; Pernod Ricard now India’s most profitable spirits firm

F

rench firm Pernod Ricard has overtaken Vijay Mallya’s United Spirits to become the country’s most profitable spirits marketer last year, thanks to Indian consumers’ increasing appetite for premium drinks. The maker of Absolut Vodka and Chivas Regal Scotch whisky crossed the $1-billion sales mark in the country in 2011-12 when its sales rose 34% to Rs 5,941 crore, making India the fourth-largest market for Pernod Ricard. Its net profit soared 77% to Rs 593 crore during the period, according to the Registrar of Companies, where it filed the financial results in January, making India the fifth-largest contributor to the French firm’s worldwide profits. In comparison, United Spirits reported a net profit of Rs 343 crore on standalone sales of Rs 7,763 crore last fiscal. On a consolidated basis, United Spirits’ sales during the fiscal year 2012 stood at Rs 9,356 crore and net profit amounted to Rs 187.2 crore. While Pernod Ricard has been earning higher profit at an operating level compared

with United Spirits since the past two years, this is the first time the maker of Blenders Pride and Royal Stag whiskies raked in higher profit at the net level. “Pernod’s success in India demonstrates that it is possible for an MNC to run a highly profitable spirits business in India,” Arnab Mitra and Akshay Saxena of Credit Suisse said in an investor note. “The other key takeaway from Pernod’s success in India is that its business is not built around the company’s global brands, but around local brands it acquired from Seagram’s in India,” the note added. Pernod’s volumes have jumped from 1 million cases in 2000 to 22 million cases in 2011. This is still less than onefifth of United Spirits’ volumes, which controls 55% of the 250-million-case Indian spirits market. One key reason for Pernod’s high profitability is its growing heft in the premium Indian-Made Foreign Liquor, or IMFL, space as Indians guzzlers move up the price ladder with the brand they drink becoming a status symbol or lifestyle statement.

“For consumers, higher personal income and growing brand awareness is driving the trend of up-trading from regular to premium IMFL,” said Sudip Sinha, beverage analyst at Rabobank Group India. “For supply side, premiumisation is seen as an indispensable strategy given companies are unable to raise prices either in response to changing raw material cost or consumer demand during the year because of rigid control on pricing and potential impact on demand due to progressive taxation,” Sinha said. Pernod Ricard’s margins in India are some three times that of United Spirits. For every case it sells, United Spirits earns over Rs 70 in profits and over Rs 720 in sales. In contrast, Pernod’s profit per case is Rs 320 while its average sales value is Rs 1,760, an industry insider said. A global report by Credit Suisse said that in 2012, Pernod Ricard’s organic growth in India was 26% — faster than any other major market and slightly ahead of China’s 24% growth. Three IMFL brands — Royal Stag, Blenders Pride

and Imperial Blue — make up for over 98% of Pernod’s volumes in India. In 2012, it sold 12 million cases of Royal Stag, a prestige whisky, while United Spirits sold 16.9 million cases of McDowell No.1 in the same segment. In the premium

segment, while Pernod Ricard sold over 3 million cases of Blenders Pride, United Spirits sold around 6 million cases across brands such as Antiquity, Royal Challenge and Signature.

Home ministry employee arrested for ‘links’ with man spying for Pakistan

T

he intelligence wing of Rajasthan Police arrested an employee of the Union home ministry for his alleged links with Sumer Khan, the computer-savvy spy arrested last month for allegedly leaking information on an Indian Air Force (IAF) exercise in Pokhran. Following Khan’s trail, the police came to know that he was getting “secret” documents from one Surendra posted with the foreigners’ division of the home ministry. “Khan told us that he got some important documents photocopied from Surendra. A team camped in Delhi and initially detained and later arrested Surendra for allegedly sharing official secrets,” Dalpat Singh Dinkar, additional director general (intelligence), said . Dinkar said Surendra and Khan would be produced before the chief judicial magistrate’s court. Surendra, a Grade 4 employee, works for the FRRO’s diary dispatch department and may have had access to files in the

foreigners’ division, according to sources. The MHA staffer was held under Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act (OSA) and was questioned on the information and files that he may have shared with Khan. Khan, a Jaisalmer resident, was picked up last month after the intelligence agencies tracked his emails and calls to Pakistan. He is suspected of regularly passing on information to his uncle in Pakistan, believed to be an ISI agent, regarding “Indian defence installations and military activities”. Khan, who police believe was trained to spy by the ISI during his past visits to Pakistan, had allegedly compromised important details of the ‘Iron Fist’ exercise conducted recently by IAF along the border in Pokhran. The exercise, in which the IAF demonstrated its full combat and fire power, was witnessed by President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and defence minister AK Antony.

India in healthcare hall of shame, ranked worst peers and neighbours

mong peers and neighbours India is performing the worst when it comes to the health of its citizens. Whether it is life expectancy, mortality due to all causes, under-five mortality or mortality among men and women between 15 and 49 years, on most counts, India ranks way below China, Brazil and Sri Lanka, just below Bangladesh and Nepal and in some cases even Pakistan. This was revealed in the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors 2010 Study (GBD 2010), a collaborative project led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington. The study details the causes of death and disability — across age groups and genders — for 187 countries around the world. Sri Lanka and China fight for the top spot in India’s neighbourhood on most parameters followed by Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal. India and Pakistan figure at the bottom with India often beating Pakistan in the race to the bottom, even if marginally so. “Countries like China and Brazil and even our neighbours, who are not as well off, doing well show that India should be able to do a lot better. We are in this situation probably because we only pay lip service to health service and health system development. Our

public expenditure on health is among the lowest in the world,” said Lalit Dandona, research professor, Public Health Foundation of India and professor of global health at IHME. In India, the top killer in 1990, diarrhoeal diseases, was replaced by ischemic heart disease by 2010. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) held second position through the two decades. However, lower respiratory infections were displaced by stroke by 2010 as the third most common cause of mortality. Diarrhoeal diseases moved to the fourth place followed by TB which continued at fifth place. For the entire developed world, in fact, for most of the world barring the poorer countries, the biggest killers were ischemic heart disease or stroke. For the poorer countries by 2010, the biggest killers were lower respiratory diseases, malaria and HIV. In the 1549 age group, i.e. barring children and elderly, suicide and TB were the biggest killers for South Asia while road accidents replaced suicide in the same age group by 2010 in China. In the developed world, suicide and road injury followed by ischemic heart disease seemed to be the biggest killers in this age group. In large swathes of Africa, HIV/AIDS was the biggest killer for the 15-49 age group. In India, “road injury” is the lead-

ing killer of men in the 15-49 age group while suicides are the biggest cause of death among women in this age group. Among children in the under-five age group, preterm birth complications was the leading cause of death in India in 2010 replacing diarrhoeal disease, the top killer of 1990. Preterm complications are the biggest killers in most of the developed world too along with congenital anoma-

lies. Lower respiratory infections, malaria and diarrhoeal diseases were the biggest killers in most of the lesser developed countries. Interestingly, the biggest risk factors for Indians were dietary risks, high blood pressure, household air pollution and tobacco smoking, including passive smoking. Dandona pointed out that it was not possible to ignore the fact that shift towards poor quality high-fat

food was causing immense damage. “We will suffer as a society if we do not regulate Big Food as the companies selling beverages, snacks etc are called. Tobacco might be a clear killer but this is more insidious and many of us public health experts think we need to be smarter about how these unhealthy foods are allowed into our society,” concluded Dandona.

Shah Rukh Khan still the don in endorsement world with Frooti, Tata Tea in his kitty

S

alman Khan may be the hottest star on Bollywood, but Shah Rukh Khan remains as popular as ever in the endorsement world, sign-

ing back-to-back deals with mango drink Frooti and the country’s largest tea brand Tata Tea. While Parle Agro, the maker of Frooti, confirmed the association, an of-

ficial aware of the development at Tata Tea said the firm had roped in Shah Rukh to make its tea brand more contemporary. Both the beverages brands are

roping in a celebrity ambassador for the first time. “We have got two very big things working hand in hand. One, an iconic brand like Frooti and a powerful endorser like Shah Rukh Khan,” said Nadia Chauhan, Parle Agro’s joint MD and daughter of company CMD Prakash Chauhan. Chauhan junior, who at 27 is as old as Frooti, added that Parle Agro had the capacity to cater to 50% growth and more both in terms of manufacturing and distribution. The firm plans to increase its ad spends by over 40% to support its new Frooti campaign with Khan. While company insiders refused to share the size of the deals, industry sources say Shah Rukh Khan is known to charge Rs 3.5-4 crore for a day annually for each brand endorsement. By roping in Khan, Frooti is taking the fight to Coca-Cola’s Maaza and PepsiCo’s Slice in the mango drink market. “It is a bold statement to make within the category and it will do the brand a great deal in the current competitive landscape,” said Sajan Raj Kurup, founder and creative chairman at Creativeland Asia that handles Frooti account. Frooti has been growing by over 25% over the last three years, the company said. An industry source, quoting Nielsen data, said that within the

overall Rs 450-crore juice drinks category, Maaza has 38% share, followed by Slice at 23% and Frooti at 15-16%. A spokesperson for Tata Global Beveragesdeclined comment on Tata Tea’s association with Shah Rukh Khan. The official quoted earlier said, “The firm is taking forward its Jaago Re theme with its new association with Khan.” Vinita Bangard, MD of talent management firm Krossover Entertainment, which represents Shah Rukh Khan, declined to confirm the development. Shah Rukh Khan is the second-highest ranked celebrity behind Salman Khan, according to January data by Times Celebex, a monthly celebrity rating index operated by the Times Group. He endorses about 19 brands. Recent months have been a spate of bigticket endorsement deals, which had slowed down over a year back. While CocaCola roped in actors Imran Khan and Parineeti Chopra for Maaza, Dabur signed Ajay Devgn for its digestive candy Hajmola. PepsiCo announced four new faces for its Kukure snacks, and Wipro Consumer Care brought back Saif Ali Khan to endorse soap brand Santoor after a two-year gap.

Mukesh Ambani India’s richest for 6th year W ith net worth of USD 21.5 billion, Mukesh Ambani has retained his title as India’s richest person for sixth year in a row, while Mexican business tycoon Carlos Slim has emerged as wealthiest in the world for the fourth consecutive year. In the overall rich list of world’s billionaires, as per an annual ranking published today by business magazine Forbes, Mukesh Ambani is ranked 22nd, while the second-richest Indian Lakshmi Mittal is at 41st position with a networth of USD 16.5 billion. Slim has topped the rankings with a networth of USD 73 billion, followed by Bill Gates (USD 67 billion), Spain’s Amancio Ortega (USD 57 billion), Warren Buffett (USD 53.5 billion) and Larry Ellison (USD 43 billion) in top five. There are a total 55 billionaires from India on the list of 1,426 persons from across the world having a minimum networth of USD 1 billion. Among the Indians, Mukesh Ambani and Lakshmi Mittal are followed by Azim Premji, Dilip Shanghvi, Shashi & Ravi Ruia, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Savitri

Jindal, Sunil Mittal, Shiv Nadar, K P Singh and Anil Ambani. Globally, Anil Ambani is ranked 233rd (USD 5.2 billion), while the global top-100 list has only three Indians – Mukesh Ambani, Lakshmi Mittal and Azim Premji (91st position). About Mukesh Ambani, Forbes said that his fortune has dropped by USD one billion over the past one year, but he “remains India’s richest person and his Reliance Industries remains country’s most valuable company”. On the other hand, his younger brother Anil Ambani saw his networth drop by USD 2.6 billion in the past one year, “continuing a three-year decline in his fortune.” Globally, Forbes said, the world’s billionaire club has reached a record high level, with 1,426 persons and an aggregate net worth of USD 5.4 trillion (up from USD 4.6 trillion a year ago). The US leads the list 442 billionaires, followed by Asia-Pacific (386), Europe (366), the Americas (129) and the Middle East & Africa (103). Carlos Slim and Bill Gates have retained their top two positions, while Amancio Ortega of Spanish retailer Zara has moved

up to the third position for the first time with the biggest gain of USD 19.5 billion to his fortune in year. As a result, Buffett has slipped to the fourth rank, despite an increase of USD 9.5 billion in his networth. Forbes said this is the first year since 2000 that Buffett has not been among the top three. Forbes said that it has included the fortunes of family members wherever one one person is the founder and in control of the business. The figures are based on stock prices and exchange rates as on February 14, 2013, it added. Those from India also include Uday Kotak, Micky Jagtiani, Cyrus Poonawalla, Adi Godrej, Jamshyd Godrej, Anil Agarwal, Kalanithi Maran, Gautam Adani, Malvinder and Shivinder Singh, Subhash Chandra and Desh Bandhu Gupta. Other Indians include B L Munjal, Rahul Bajaj, Rajan Raheja, Habil Khorakiwala, N R Narayana Murthy, K Anji Reddy, MA Yusuff Ali, Vikas Oberoi, S Gopalakrishnan, Murali Divi, Nandan Nilekani, Ranjan Pai, Venugopal Dhoot, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Yusuf Hamied, Baba Kalyani, G M Rao and Joy Alukkas.

Extreme weather kills thousands of Ladakh’s pashmina goats

L

ast year’s unusually dry summer and this winter’s unprecedented snowfall, the worst in nearly 50 years, in Ladakh’s Changtang area has claimed over 18,000 “pashmina” goats, the source of one of the finest varieties of wool that has put the region on the world map. Changtang is a high altitude plateau in southeastern Ladakh, inhabited by Changpa (Champa) nomads, and known for its harsh and semi-arid weather with very little vegetation. The harsh winter makes these mountain goats grow extremely warm and very soft coating that is six times finer than human hair and used to produce pashmina wool. Its products including shawls, scarves, wraps, stoles are exported worldwide. “While rains were scanty last summer, the winter witnessed unprecedented snowfall,” said Dr Morup of Leh’s district sheep husbandry office. Because of the harsh climate no other agricultural activity is possible and the fodder comes mainly from the natural vegetation. Lack of rain last year dried out the natural flora and the heavy snowfall in January and February cut off the region from the rest of the country, preventing fodder supplies. “The goats perished because of extreme cold and lack of food,” he explained, adding, “We had supplied 13,000 quintals in November before the closure of the roads, otherwise loss would have been more.” Leh deputy commissioner Tser-

March 2013 Edition

ing Angchok told TOI, “Now, 1100 quintals of fodder have been sent in 62 trucks to the area where these animals are located.” The members of the Ladakh hill council, led by executive councilor Gyurmet Dorjey, are helping in organizing additional stocks of fodder to prevent any further

loss of these “golden goats”. The council members accuse the Omar Abdullah government of not doing enough to save these rare animals. “These conditions also threaten the ancient nomadic lifestyle of the Champa people,” said Tsewang Namgyal, advisor to YDA,

an association of Drukpa Buddhists. Among the three main lineages of Himalayan Buddhism practised in the region, the Drukpa lineage has the largest number of followers. The harsh climate does not permit agriculture and these people are completely dependent on their livestock.

The pashmina wool has an enormous contribution to Ladakh’s economy. “This kind of calamities might convince them to quit the nomadic lifestyle and settle in the villages. This will have a huge impact on the local economy,” he added.

US to give ‘women of courage award’ to Delhi gang rape victim

U

nited States has selected the 23-year-old Delhi braveheart for the International Women of Courage Award. The award to Delhi gang rape victim would be presented posthumously by the first lady Michelle Obama and the secretary of state John Kerry, on March 8, an official announcement said on Monday.

March 2013 Edition

“For millions of Indian women, her personal ordeal, perseverance to fight for justice, and her family’s continued bravery is helping to lift the stigma and vulnerability that drive violence against women,” the State Department said about her as it announced the awards to be given to 10 women from across the world. She bravely recorded two po-

lice statements while in the hospital, repeatedly called for justice against the six attackers, and stated her will to survive to see justice done, the State Department said. “Like many Indians inspired by her struggle, she was born into a working class family that invested their hopes and life savings into her dream to pursue medicine.” “She had just graduated from a

physiotherapy program when her life was cut short,” said the State Department. “In the wake of her death just two weeks after the attack, India’s civil society began advocating heavily for legislation and social programs to stem gender-based violence in all its forms and to ensure higher rape conviction rates and gender-sensitive law enforcement and justice systems.” “Thanks to these efforts, the Indian government has begun to take action to follow through on those demands,” the State Department said. The paramedical student was gangraped, beaten and thrown out of a moving bus along with a male friend in Delhi last December, which generated widespread protests and was condemned by various women groups, both in India and abroad. The secretary of state’s International Women of Courage Award annually recognises women around the globe who have shown exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for women’s rights and empowerment, often at great personal risk. Since inception of the award in 2007, the Department of State has honoured 67 women from 45 different countries. The other awardees for this

year are Malalai Bahaduri, First Sergeant Afghan National Interdiction Unit (Afghanistan); Samira Ibrahim, Coordinator Know Your Rights (Egypt); Julieta Castellanos, Rector National Autonomous University of Honduras (Honduras); Dr Josephine Obiajulu Odumakin, President Campaign for Democracy (Nigeria); Elena Milashina journalist, human rights activist (Russia) and Fartuun Adan, executive director, Elman Peace and Human Rights Centre (Somalia). Three of the awardees – Tsering Woeser (Wei Se), Tibetan author, poet, blogger (China), Razan Zeitunah, human rights lawyer and Founder, Local Coordination Committees (Syria) and Ta Phong Tan, blogger (Vietnam) would be given the award in absentia. After the award ceremony, the honorees will travel separately to cities across the United States to engage with the American people through an International Visitor Leadership Program. They will visit Indianapolis, Jackson Hole, Portland, San Francisco, and Tampa. The women will reconvene in San Diego to reflect on their visit and discuss ways to work together to improve the lives of women and girls around the world, the State Department added.

Haryana khap relaxes norm on same-gotra marriage

Thirteen school kids die in Punjab bus-truck collision

A

khap panchayat in Kaithal district of Haryana decided to ease some gotra restrictions for marriages. The leaders of Chahal khap announced that it would not object to a marriage in which the grandmothers of the couple have the same gotra. The condition that the couple’s gotra and their mothers’ gotra should not match will continue to exist. “The khap would not have any objection if two people whose grandmothers are from the same gotra get married. However, restrictions on marriage in same gotra and the gotra of mother of bride/groom would remain in force,” said Surjeet Singh Chahal, pradhan of Chahal khap. The gotra system in Haryana till now forbade a couple from getting married if they, their mothers or their grandmothers belonged to the same gotra. The leaders said that they were also trying to change with the times. “With the changing times, the khap realizes that it’s getting difficult to arrange marriages outside the gotra. So, the khap leaders have adopted the resolution. The khap will have no objection if anybody decides to marry to a person from grandmother’s got-

ra”, said Dalbir Singh Chahal, a khap representative. He said that though the decision has come into force, it’s likely to be adopted in the khap’s state meeting of scheduled on March 31. The khap also adopted the resolution to strongly implement a ban on the liquor consumption, DJ music and use of firearms to celebrate marriage ceremonies. This is the second khap panchayat in Haryana to relax

gotra norms after a khap in Sonipat did so a year ago. The Supreme Court too has taken cognizance of the kangaroo court style justice delivery system of the khaps and has issued instructions to the government to rein in the khap panchayats. The apex court is in the process of hearing the views of the khap panchayats before laying down guidelines for the government to curb the role of khaps.

hirteen schoolchildren, all below 10 years of age, were killed near Nakodar town in Punjab’s Jalandhar district when the mini-bus they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck . The bus driver also died on the spot. The accident occurred in Gohir village, about 15km from Jalandhar, on the Jalandhar-Nakodar road at 7.45am. Witnesses said the foggy morning and the high speed of the vehicles led to the tragedy. Passersby and nearby residents helped the police take the children to hospitals. But many children had suffered serious head injuries and could not survive. While seven died on the spot, five succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital and a six-year-old girl died at a Nakodar hospital in the evening. There were 24 children on the bus. Of the victims, all from Mudhan

and Talwandi Bharon villages, nine were boys and four girls. The police said three children escaped unhurt and eight others were hospitalized. The bus conductor also had to be taken to hospital. The school bus belonged to Akal Academy, a private school at Boparai Kalan village in Jalandhar district. Even as the police booked the truck driver for negligent driving, many parents and residents of nearby villages said Vishal, 25, the deceased driver, used to drive recklessly and had been repeatedly told to drive cautiously. “I was behind the truck with my uncle on my scooter when we heard a bang,” said Jagbir Kaur from Mudhan whose brother Navdeep Singh was inside the bus but escaped unhurt. “It appeared that the truck dragged the school bus to some distance. The bus was completely damaged.”

CBI examines chopper scam Punjab cops thrash molestation-bid victim

T

he CBI began examining suspects in connection with alleged kickbacks in the Rs 3,600 crore VVIP chopper deal as its team questioned executives of IDS Infotech and Aeromatrix — firms named in the agency’s preliminary enquiry. CBI sources, without revealing identities of the executives, said officials of both firms were examined in connection with the probe. Agency sources also said they have asked the two companies to provide all documents related to the contract signed during the tenure of former IAF chief SP Tyagi - named in the enquiry along with three of his cousins. The agency suspects a portion of the Rs 362 crore bribe was allegedly routed to Indian nationals through Tunisia and Mauritius, disguised as payments for engineering contracts to Chandigarhbased IDS Infotech and Aeroma-

trix. Both companies have denied involvement in the bribery scandal. Sources said records relating to ownership of the companies, contracts handled by them and several other papers were also collected from the executives by CBI investigators on Monday. They said executives of the two Chandigarh-based firms were asked to join the probe into allegations that several million euros were given to three European middlemen to swing the deal for 12 VVIP helicopters in favour of Finmeccanica’s subsidiary AgustaWestland. Two middlemen, from their share of commission, allegedly paid large sums of money to Indian nationals under the cover of payments for engineering contracts with the two Chandigarhbased firms, the preliminary enquiry said. The agency has registered a preliminary enquiry against 11 people including S P Tyagi, his three cousins, European middlemen and four companies — Finmeccanica, AgustaWestland, IDS Infotech and Aeromatrix. All the suspects have refuted allegations against them. Former IAF chief SP Tyagi and his three cousins — Julie, Dosca and Sanjeev — are among 11 individuals named in the preliminary enquiry registered by the CBI on February 25.

F

our cops thrashed a 25year-old woman and her ex-serviceman father (60) after she approached them to register a case against some truck drivers, who had passed lewd remarks and attempted to molest her in Punjab’s Taran Taran town. The incident came to light on Monday after the video clip of the thrashing a day earlier surfaced. The clip caught the cops on camera abusing, pushing, and beating the two with canes publically. The father was attacked after he tried to stop the policemen from hitting his daughter. He said the drivers came too close to his daughter and passed obscene remarks while they were

standing outside a marriage hall in Taran Taran, where they had arrived earlier from their village to attend a wedding. “I tried to stop the drivers but they turned hostile. So, we complained to the nearby city police station,” he said. He said the cops abused him and his daughter instead of acting against them. “These four cops came to the marriage hall to talk to the drivers. After talking to them, the cops turned to us and started abusing us and asked us to run away from the spot,” said the father. “And then all of a sudden the policemen got angry when my daughter and I protested. They started hitting her first. They slapped her, hit her with canes, pushed her around and

abused her in full public view.” He said no one tried to rescue them from the cops. “The passersby stopped for a while, looked at us and then moved on,” he said. The beating continued till the two fell on the ground. IG RP Mittal identified two of the four constables as Saraj Singh and Devender Kumar and said they have been transferred to police lines till an inquiry ordered into the incident is concluded. “Any action will be taken after the inquiry,” he said. Despite an outcry, no case had been registered against the cops till Monday evening. The incident provoked outrage as dozens of people gathered outside Tarn Taran City police station to protest.

India’s STRaND-1 first to put smartphone in space

I

ndia has successfully launched the world’s first smartphone — loaded with a number of experimental ‘Apps’, some serious and some just for fun — into the orbit. The University of Surrey’s Surrey Space Centre (SSC) said that the STRaND-1, a nano-satellite carrying a smartphone, has successfully been launched into space from India. STRaND-1 is a training and demonstration mission, designed to test commercial offthe-shelf technologies in space. The Apps on board STRaND-1 were developed by winners of a facebook competition held last year. iTesa for example will record the magnitude of the magnetic field around the phone during orbit. Used as a precursor to further scientific studies, such as detecting Alfven waves (magnetic oscillations in our upper atmosphere ), the iTEsa app could provide proof of principle.

The Scream in Space app was developed by Cambridge University Space Flight and will make full use of the smartphone’s speakers. Testing the theory ‘in space no-one can hear you scream, made popular in the 1979 film ‘Alien’ , the app will play videos of the best screams while in orbit and screams will be recorded using the smartphone’s own microphone . The STRAND Data app will show satellite telemetry on the smartphone’s display which can be imaged by an additional camera on-board . This will enable new graphical telemetry to interpret trends. The 360 app will take images using the smartphone’s camera and use the technology on-

board the spacecraft to establish STRaND-1 ‘s position. The public will be able to request their own unique satellite image of Earth through the website, where images can be seen on a map showing where they have been acquired. Professor Sir Martin Sweeting, SSC director said, “STRaND-1 mission is a fantastic achievement.” STRaND-1 is a training and demonstration mission weighing 4.3 kg launched into a 785km Sun-synchronous orbit on ISRO’s PSLV launcher. Sir Martin added, “This launch is SSC’s first with Isro, and I am looking forward to exploring opportunities for further launches and a wider collaboration on space projects in the future.”

Facebook buys Microsoft ad technology platform

F

acebook had agreed to buy advertising technology from Microsoft Corp that measures the effectiveness of ads on its website, which should help in its fight with Google Inc for online advertising revenue. Under the long-rumored transaction, Facebook will purchase the Atlas Advertiser Suite, an ad management and measurement platform that Microsoft took on with its $6.3 billion acquisition of digital ad agency aQuantive in

2007. Facebook did not say how much it paid for the technology. Unable to make it work for its

Since then, Facebook has introduced a number of tools and partnerships to prove to marketers that advertising on its social network delivers enough bang for the buck. Brian Boland, Facebook’s director of monetization product marketing, said the purchase of Atlas was not a step toward creating a much wider ad network beyond the Facebook site, but analysts believe that is Facebook’s ultimate goal. “Although the statement announcing the deal focused on Atlas’ measurement tools rather than its ad targeting technology, we expect that Atlas will soon be

using Facebook’s data to target sponsorships, in-stream ads, and other rich ad formats across the entire web, and that’s big news,” said Forrester analyst Nate Elliott. “The question now is how quickly and successfully Facebook can integrate its data with Atlas’ tools, and whether they can avoid a privacy backlash as they do so. History suggests they’ll struggle on both counts,” he said. Google leads the $15 billion U.S. market for online display ads with 15.4 percent share, according to researcher eMarketer, followed by Facebook with 14.4 percent.

Microsoft releases IE10 browser for more users

M

icrosoft Corp released Internet Explorer 10 to millions of new users on 26th febuary, hoping the latest version of its market-leading browser will win back customers who have migrated to Google Inc’s Chrome and help it establish a toe-hold in the fast-growing mobile browser market. The world’s largest software maker, whose Internet Explorer browser elbowed out Netscape Navigator in the early days of the web, said IE 10 is 20% faster at downloading sites than its predecessor IE 9 and allows for touch-screen commands. The browser has been available since late October for users of Windows 8, Microsoft’s new touch-friendly operating system, but now becomes available for the 700 million or so users of Windows 7. Microsoft is hoping PC and laptop users will like the new browser enough to consider buying Windows 8 tablets rather than Apple Inc’s iPad, which does not run Internet Explorer. Various versions of Microsoft’s venerable Internet Explorer franchise still dominate desktop browsing, with 55% of the PC browser market all together. But it has in recent years lost share to Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome, which now account for 20% and 17% respectively, according to tech research firm NetMarketShare. IE 10 running on Windows 8 has got generally good reviews, and has been hailed as the best version of Internet Explorer yet,

but it has not been considered decisively superior to Chrome or Firefox. In the smaller but faster-growing mobile browser market, Ap-

ple’s Safari is the runaway leader with 61%, owing to the popularity of its iPhones and iPads while Google’s Android browser has 21%.

Tablets running Windows 8, including Microsoft’s own Surface devices, have not sold strongly since they were launched last October, restricting IE 10’s popu-

a fast-growing new market: their grandparents. Handset makers at the world’s biggest mobile fair in Barcelona, Spain, showed off a slew of new

devices aimed at the hundreds of millions of older people put off by the complexity of the latest iPhones and Android-powered smartphones.

One of the leaders of the segment in Europe, Austrian firm Emporia, launched a new handset, the Emporia Connect, at the February 24-28 Mobile World Congress. The sleek-looking black and silver flip phone is designed not to be “stigmatising” yet easy enough for older buyers to use, said Emporia’s general manager for France, Christophe Yerolymos. It has a keypad with larger numbers and an emergency button that will send an SOS along with data pinpointing the location of the phone. The phone features a system called Emporia Me, with an array of remote control features for the owner’s family, allowing a child or grandchild to check the device’s location, battery status, or ensure the volume is up. While it is not a smartphone and has no mapping service, it does have an orientation feature that lets a user push a single button to get turn-by-turn audible instructions for returning to a car while on a shopping trip, for example.

Japan’s Fujitsu rolled out a European version of a smart phone for seniors, the Stylistic S01, which first launched in mid-2012 in Japan. It is an Android-based smartphone with large, simplified icons, and a “family alert” button that will send a message along with geo-localisation data. But it also has an unusual touchscreen that will only respond when the user presses a bit harder so as to avoid launching applications by mistake, said Fujitsu Europe-Middle East-Africa product marketing director James Maynard. “You can actually pre-touch and then when you know which button you want to press, you can exert a little bit more pressure,” he said. “It’s made to grow with you so as you become more confident you naturally will exert more pressure on to the device.” Kapsys, a French firm, showed off its SmartConnect handset aimed at seniors. The firm is in discussions with operators including Orange and is hoping to launch the device for about $520 in Europe in June and then in the United States by the end of 2013, said chief executive Aram Hekimian.

Team of US doctors claim to have cured infant of HIV

A

merican researchers claimed to have cured an infant of HIV infection in a medical breakthrough that raises hopes for thousands of babies across the world who contract the deadly virus in their mother’s wombs. This is the first child — and only the second HIV-infected person — to have been cured of the disease, if the claim announced on

Sunday by a research team from Johns Hopkins Children’s Center (JHCC) and the University of Massachusetts Medical School is found to be true. The team hoped that the success could be replicated in other children born with HIV which would pave the way for eliminating the disease among children. HIV-related breakthroughs are rare and finding a vaccine has

QUOTEUNQUOTE “I’m very excited to be here, this is only my second performance in India...”

been a daunting challenge thanks to the ability of the virus to slip through. The researchers put a Mississippiborn infant, whose mother is HIV-positive, to antiretroviral therapy (ART) within 30 hours of birth. The prompt administration led to the cure by halting the formation of hard-to-treat viral reservoirs — dormant cells responsible for reigniting the infection in most HIV patients within weeks of stopping the therapy. A series of tests showed progressively diminishing viral presence in the infant’s blood, until it reached undetectable levels 29 days after birth. The infant remained on antivirals till 18 months of age. Ten months after the treatment was discontinued, the child underwent repeated blood tests, none of which detected HIV. Test for HIV-specific antibodies — the infection’s standard clinical indicator — also remained negative throughout. “Prompt ART in newborns that begins within days of exposure

may help infants clear the virus and achieve long-term remission without lifelong treatment by preventing such viral hideouts from forming in the first place,” said JHCC virologist Deborah Persaud. “Our next step is to find out if this is a highly unusual response to very early antiretroviral therapy or something we can actually replicate in other high-risk newborns,” Persaud added. Will it work for adults? The only other HIV-positive person to be cured was Timothy Brown, a middle-aged man with leukemia who got cured after receiving a bone-marrow transplant from a donor genetically resistant to HIV infection. In the current case, the New York Times cited experts saying they needed convincing that the baby had truly been infected in the first place. “If not, this would be a case of prevention, something already done for babies born to infected mothers,” it reported. Other experts were quoted as saying that the findings in the baby would probably not be relevant to adults. The researchers said they did not have enough data at the moment to recommend changes to the current practice of using preventive rather than therapeutic treatment for high-risk infants. They said complete viral eradication on a large scale was their long-term goal. “But, for now, (it) remains out of reach, and our best chance may come from ag-

gressive, timely and precisely targeted use of antiviral therapies in high-risk newborns as a way to achieve functional cure,” the researchers said in their report. Functional cure allows a patient to be free of the HIV virus without lifelong treatment, besides preventing HIV replication in the blood. In this case, viral presence is so minimal that it remains undetectable by standard clinical tests. It is discernible only through ultrasensitive methods. “Prevention really is the best cure, and we already have proven strategies that can prevent 98% of newborn infections by identifying and treating HIV-positive pregnant women,” the report said. The UN estimates that 330,000 babies were infected in 2011. This is apart from more than three million children living with HIV around the world. In India, more than 14,000 children got infected in 2011, which accounted for 13% decline compared to 2009. The number of estimated deaths among children (0-14 years old) due to AIDS was 10,213 in 2011. A latest UNAIDS Global HIV Epidemic Report revealed that 72% HIV-infected children in India and South East Asia do not have access to treatment. In India, children accounted for 7% of an estimated 21 lakh people living with HIV/AIDS in 2011. Around 40% (8.16 lakh) of them were women, who are likely to pass on the virus to their children.

ir India has suspended one of its captains after an air-hostess complained that he got into a mid-air fight with her after she objected to an unauthorised passenger travelling in the cockpit in violation of security norms. She has also filed a police complaint against the pilot alleging misbehaviour and harassment. “The pilot has been derostered, meaning he will not fly. The pilot is currently in Bangkok, where he flew a day after the incident as a commander, but will return as a

passenger from Bangkok tomorrow,” an Air India spokesperson said. Air India sources said that the alleged incident took place on March 2 on the Delhi-Kolkata flight AI 020. The commander of the flight allegedly took a Customs officer, who was a passenger, into the cockpit and the air-hostess said she found them smoking. The air-hostess objected to this, leading to an argument with the pilot. She was apparently supported by other cabin crew on

the flight. “Since this flight returns to Delhi with the same crew, the airhostess filed a police complaint upon landing in Delhi,” said the source. Police said a complaint had been registered under section 509 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with “words, gestures or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman”. “We have registered a case and are verifying the matter,” said deputy commissioner of police (airport) J S Deswal.

am Kapoor took a bold step when he decided to lock lips with co-star Sakshi Tanwar for a sequence in Bade Achhe Lagte Hai and surprised everyone. The actor is happy with his decision and says he will be known as a trendsetter. Ram had already set a trend when he appeared in the romantic drama as the lead despite being overweight and with grey hair. In Bade Achhe Lagte Hai, which runs on Sony, he is married to Priya, played by Sakshi. Ram said, “I was very open to it. I am a trained actor and it’s my job to justify it. The minute I was asked to do that, I was okay with it. “I have tried to handle the scene in my own way. Before going ahead, I only asked myself, “If I was 40 plus and newly married, would not I kiss my

wife?” I got my answer and I went ahead. I am happy that I will be known as the first actor to kiss on TV,” added the actor. In real life, Ram is 39 and is married to actress Gautami who is very supportive. “My wife is very supportive and she understands that it’s my job. But as far as I am concerned, I will do such scenes only if I am convinced about it,” he explained. His resent resolution is to shed extra pounds that he has gained. “I will lose weight, but not for the industry. Amjad Khan was known as he was. The industry has accepted me the way I am and still I am getting some good roles regardless of my weight issues,” said the actor. “But I don’t want to tell my fans it’s good to be fat. I do want to lose some weight for my children and not for my career. And as I had always said, my wife is my first child,” he added. He is doing the daily soap and also hosting a cooking reality show and the two projects keeps him on his toes, but Ram is not complaining. “I am not stressed, but it’s hard work. I love my work and it’s not stressful for me. Luckily,

Not Drinking Alcohol During Pregnancy Is The Safest Option

A

lcohol can alter the normal development of the fetus (unborn baby). The possible effects of fetal alcohol exposure include brain damage, birth defects, poor growth before and after birth, low IQ or learning difficulties, delayed development, social and behavioural problems and problems with hearing, speech and vision. If these problems aren’t identified and intervention strategies put into place, it can result in secondary disabilities which can include early school leaving, drug

March 2013 Edition

and alcohol addiction, mental health problems, inappropriate sexual behaviour and trouble with the police. Many women choose to abstain from alcohol completely when they are pregnant or trying to get pregnant to avoid any risk that their unborn child will be exposed to alcohol. Metabolism is the body’s process of converting the food we eat and drink into the energy we need to think, move and grow. When a person drinks alcohol it passes from the stomach and intestines into the blood.

The placenta links the blood suppy of the fetus to the blood supply of the mother and is essential to the growth of a healthy fetus. The placenta cannot keep harmful substances such as alcohol away from the fetus which is why we recommend that no alcohol in pregnancy is the safest option. Because the fetus metabolises alcohol more slowly than an adult does, the fetus’s blood alcohol concentrations can be higher than the mothers. Researchers use the term teratogen when referring to alco

hol. A teratogen is a drug, chemical or even infection that interrupts or alters the normal development of a fetus, including

development of the brain or other major organs. Other examples of teratogens include Rubella, radiation, mercury and thalidomide.

How alcohol consumption can affect your baby The safest option for pregnant women is to abstain from drinking if they are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding. This is the advice from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). It is not known yet how much alcohol is safe to drink when you are pregnant. However, it is known that the risk of damage to your baby increases the more you drink and that binge drinking is especially harmful. The safest choice for your baby therefore, is to abstain from drinking alcohol. Pregnant women should never become intoxicated. This is because alcohol readily crosses from the mother’s blood stream into the baby’s blood stream. So when you drink, so does your baby. What if you drank before you knew you were pregnant? If you drank small amounts of alcohol before you knew you were pregnant, be reassured that the risk of harm to your baby is low. Once you know you are pregnant it is safest

to stop drinking alcohol completely for the rest of your pregnancy and while you are breastfeeding. This will increase your baby’s chances of being healthy. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a term used to describe a range of disabilities and a continuum of effects that may arise from prenatal alcohol exposure. It includes diagnoses such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), partial Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (pFAS), Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ARND) and Alcohol Related Birth Defects (ARBD). The most severe adverse effect from chronic or intermittent heavy maternal alcohol drinking is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). Other potential adverse effects include spontaneous abortion, low birth weight, and attention and learning difficulties. Studies have also demonstrated that the unborn baby’s central nervous system is vulnerable to alcohol.

Maharashtra

A dream destination for tourists

The name Maharashtra means the ‘The Great State’ or ‘Great Nation’. The name is said to have been originated probably from ‘rathi’ which means ‘Chariot driver’, referring to drivers and builders of chariots who were known as ‘maharathis’ or ‘Fighting Force’. Maharashtra gets its name aptly, because it is the largest states in India, both in terms of area as well as population. Maharashtra spans 308000 km² with a population over 78,937,000 and the state language being Marathi.

Culture and Tradition

A

s Maharashtra is a vast state, the people of this colourful state wears different types of costumes, take different cuisines, has different forms of dances and music according to the physical features of their locality. Generally, men wear dhoti and pheta in olden days, while women wear choli and saree. But with the change of time, young Maharashtrians too are fast attracting to the latest fashions imported from the western countries. The mouth watering Konkan and Varadi cuisines would kill any visitor’s appetite. Although, Maharashtrian cuisines are a bit strong in pepper and spice, but it is the speciality of the dishes of this state that world knows about. And everybody knows about the unbeatable taste of the Mumbai chaats. The dance forms like Povada, Lavani and Koli with mesmerizing music and rhythmic movements entertain the Maharashtrians. Dhangri Gaja, Dindi, Kala and Tamasha are the folk dances that attach to the heart of the people of this state.

Cuisines of Maharashtra

M

aharashtrians consider anna, or food equals to Brahma, the creator of the universe. Maharashtrians believe in offering their food first to the God as a thanksgiving. Especially on festive occasions, specific mithais (sweets) are offered such as ukadiche modak (Ganesh Chaturthi) and satyanarayan puja sheera. Maharashtrian cuisine has two major styles - Konkan and Varadi. A major portion of Maharashtra, which lies on the coast of the Arabian Sea, is called the Konkan having its own Konkani cuisine, which is a combination of Malvani, Gaud Saraswat Brahmin and Goan cuisines. The cuisine for the interior Maharashtra or the Vidarbha area is called Varadi cuisine. Maharashtrian cuisine is packed with the subtly flavoured vegetarian delicacies and hot aromatic meat and fish curries, while the crunchy, crisp sweets are made mostly from rice and jiggery are also their favourite. The Konkan food hMumbai has its own pot-pourri of dishes like vada pav, misal and pav bhaji, which are immensely popular across India.

Maharashtra Festivals

A

s Maharashtra is a big state, it is home to many religions. The state also nurtures different traditions with diverse communities. Maharashtrians are fun loving people, so that might be another reason why the state has lots of different festivals. Apart from the main festivals of Eid, Holi, Deewali and other festivals, which are celebrated, all over India, there are other festivals, which are celebrated locally and regionally in Maharashtra. Songs, dance and mouth watering cuisines accompany almost every festivals. Ganesh Chaturthi is the most important festival in Maharashtra. It is celebrated for ten days with huge fun fare. HOLI - Let the co

“The colorful festival of Holi is celebrated on Phalgun Purnima which origin and celebrates the triumph of ‘good’ over ‘bad’. The colorful fe day, people hug and wish each other ‘Happy Holi’. Holi celebration be ends & stories associated with Holi celebration makes the festival mo ers’ faces and cheer up saying, “bura na maano Holi hai”. Holi also g wrapped in a special Holi gift.” Holi Festival One of the major festivals of India, Holi is celebrated with enthusiasm and gaiety on the full moon day in the month of Phalgun which is the month of March as per the Gregorian calendar. Holi festival may be celebrated with various names and people of different states might be following different traditions. But, what makes Holi so unique and special is the spirit of it which remains the same throughout the country and even across the globe, wherever it is celebrated. Preparations Entire country wears a festive look when it is time for Holi celebration. Market places get abuzz with activity as frenzied shoppers start making preparations for the festival. Heaps of various hues of gulal and abeer can be seen on the roadside days before the festival. Pichkaris in innovative and modern design too come up every year to lure the children who wish to collect them as Holi memorabilia and of course, to drench everybody in the town. Womenfolk too start making early preparations for the holi festival as they cook loads of gujiya, mathri and papri for the family and also for the relatives. At some places specially in the north women also make papads and potato chips at this time. Season of Bloom Everybody gets delighted at the arrival of Holi as the season itself is so gay. Holi is also called the Spring Festival - as it marks the arrival of spring the season of hope and joy. The gloom of the winter goes as Holi promises of bright summer days. Nature too, it seems rejoices at the arrival of Holi and wears its best clothes. Fields get filled with crops promising a good harvest to the farmers and flowers bloom colouring the surroundings and filling fragrance in the air.

Legends A Hindu festival, Holi has various legends associated with it. The foremost is the legend of demon King Hiranyakashyap who demanded everybody in his kingdom to worship him but his pious son, Prahlad became a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap wanted his son to be killed. He asked his sister Holika to enter a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap as Holika had a boon which made he immune to fire. Story goes that Prahlad was saved by lord himself for his extreme devotion and evil minded Holika was burnt to ashes, for her boon worked only when she entered the fire alone. Since that time, people light a bonfire, called Holika on the eve of Holi festival and celebrate the victory of good over evil and also the triumph of devotion to god. Children take special delight in the tradition and this has another legend attached to it. It says that there was once an ogress Dhundhi who used to trouble children in the kingdom of Prithu. She was chased away by children on the day of Holi. Therefore, children are allowed to play pranks at the time of ‘Holika Dahan’. Some also celebrate the death of evil minded Pootana. The ogress tried to Lord Krishna as an infant by feeding it poisonous milk while executing the plan of Kansa, Krishna’s devil uncle. However, Krishna sucked her blood and brought her end. Some who view the origin of festivals from seasonal cycles believe that Pootana represents winter and her death the cessation and end of winter. In South India, people worship Kaamadeva- the god of love and passion for his extreme sacrifice. According to a legend, Kaamadeva shot his powerful love arrow on Lord Shiva to revoke his interest in the worldly affairs in the interest of the earth. However, Lord Shiva was enraged as he was in deep mediation and opened his third eye which reduced Kaamadeva to ashes. Though,

later on the request of Rati, Kaamadeva’s wife, Shiva was pleased to restore him back. Holika Dahan On the eve of Holi, called Chhoti or Small Holi people gather at important crossroads and light huge bonfires, the ceremony is called Holika Dahan. This tradition is also followed in Gujarat and Orissa. To render greatfulness to Agni, god of Fire, gram and stalks from the harvest are also offered to Agni with all humility. Ash left from this bonfire is also considered sacred and people apply it on their foreheads. People believe that the ash protects them from evil forces. Play of Colors Great excitement can be seen in people on the next day when it is actually the time for the play of colours. Shops and offices remain closed for the day and people get all the time to get crazy and whacky. Bright colours of gulal and abeer fill the air and people take turns in pouring colour water over each other. Children take special delight in spraying colours on one another with their pichkaris and throwing water balloons and passers by. Women and senior citizen form groups called tolis and move in colonies - applying colours and exchanging greetings. Songs, dance on the rhythm of dholak and mouthwatering Holi delicacies are the other highlights of the day. Expression of Love Lovers too long to apply colours on their beloved. This has a popular legend behind it. It is said that the naughty and mischievous Lord Krishna started the trend of playing colours. He applied colour on her beloved Radha to make her one like him. The trend soon gained popularity amongst the masses. No wonder, there is no match to the Holi of Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana - the places associated with the birth and childhood of Radha and

It is so much fun to watch the otherwise sober people making a clown of themselves in full public display. Some, however, take bhang in excess and spoil the spirit. Soha Ali Khan annoyed by royalty references

D

on’t rub in the royalty, please! That seems to have been Soha Ali Khan’s underlying statement when at a public event, promoting her new film “ Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns”, she made her displeasure clear at her royalty references being relentlessly rustled up Director Tigmanshu Dhulia said at the event that he chose Soha to play a princess in his film as she looked every inch the royalty in royal finery. To this, the sharp-tongued Soha retorted: “Oh yes, I even sleep

in royal clothes.” Explaining her snappy response, Soha said: “It is true. When I was asked if I was comfortable playing my character because of my royal background, I did respond that way.” “But I was being facetious in merely stating how ‘unroyal’ my dress sense is. As a matter of fact, I am so bohemian in my dress code that only recently have I started wearing shoes instead of chappals. So I was actually making fun of myself!”

Having said this, Soha adds she is very proud of her royal antecedents. “I embrace my identity. It is a privilege to come from the background that I do. And it is this background that put me in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s mind for my part as the princess in ‘Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns’. I am grateful for it,” said the daughter of veteran actress Sharmila Tagore and late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who was nawab of Bhopal until 1971, when India abolished royal entitlements.

Randhir Kapoor cracks dirty jokes with Rekha

R

ekha is returning to celluloid with Super Nani, the film in which she is the main protagonist, and guess who is most excited about pairing up with her again — Randhir Kapoor aka Dabboo, who has done several films with the yesteryer diva. “We have done about 20-25 films together. Rekha is my buddy,

she is like a boyfriend (read guy friend) to me. I can even crack dirty jokes with her. I feel really great to get back with her,” said Randhir, who plays the Nana, her husband, in the film. With a mischievous grin, Randhir further added, “I never got to kiss her when we were young. Actually I left her for the young guys and now, we are too old to kiss.”

Sonakshi Sinha torn between Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn

O

ne is guessing that Sonakshi Sinha, in her 20s, would ideally like to do movies only with the younger lot of heroes. She has given clear signals by signing Lootera with Ranveer

Singh, Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai-2 with Imran Khan and Rambo Rajkumar with Shahid Kapoor. However, since Sona is the lucky mascot for guys like Akshay Kumar (Rowdy

Rathore) and Ajay Devgn (Son Of Sardaar), both these Bollywood superstars in their 40s, reportedly keep recommending her name for their forthcoming films. One hears that Ajay wanted

to work with Sona for a film that he will do later this year, but Akki already has her signed for Vipul Shah’s Thuppaki remake and is also considering casting Sona for yet another movie.

Guess till Salman Khan decides to do Dabangg-3, Sona will be kept busy by Akshay and Ajay; with some youngsters thrown in the middle.

Is Deep Sleep Like Meditation?

S

leep remains a mystery despite all the research done so far. Science says it helps to consolidate our memories and remove unnecessary information. That during sleep, when inputs from our five senses are almost zero, the ‘mind-brain’ takes stock and helps consolidate memory learned during the day. However I think we sleep because it is like forced meditation; it invigorates and charges our batteries. In sleep, we go through four

March 2013 Edition

or five cycles of deep sleep and dreaming episodes, each of 90 minutes duration. Electroencephalography (EEG) studies done on the human brain (during sleep) show that deep sleep is characterised by production of low frequency Delta waves known to help produce life and mood-enhancing chemicals. Here, we are totally unaware of our surroundings. But, dreaming episodes characterised by the rapid eye movement (REM) stage is of light sleep; you can

be woken up quite easily. Hence when we wake up after a deep sleep it is refreshing and invigorating. In deep Samadhi also one produces Delta waves, though most studies of the meditating brain show prevalence of Alpha waves, perhaps because EEG and fMRI are quite invasive and so are not conducive for deep meditation. The noise and intense magnetic field of fMRI and electrical wires of EEG dangling around the subject’s head do not

create a conducive environment for deep meditation. Nevertheless studies of EEG on some have shown that in deep meditation there is a spike in delta wave production. Outward signs of losing complete consciousness is similar to that in deep sleep. Ramakrishna Paramhansa, when he attained enlightenment, was completely oblivious to the world for almost six months. To keep him alive during this time his guru force-fed him. In deep sleep most of peripheral brain neuron activity either reduces drastically or shuts down. Only the central portion of the brain – seat of autonomous nervous system -- works. This is also where long-term memories are stored and consolidated. Much irrelevant information takes up memory space. As the peripheral brain shuts down these memories get dissolved, allowing the brain to increase its processing power for yet another day. Deep meditation also allows removal of sanskars or memories as Sage Patanjali stated and this could be a probable mechanism to do so. In fact he defines yoga as suppression of thought waves; so the low frequency Delta waves in deep sleep could be a manifestation

of this process. When deep sleep is disrupted, memory dissolution doesn’t take place; memory knots keep growing, creating irritable moods and short tempers. There is also a growing body of data in sleep research indicating that in many people who are not getting enough restful sleep, the incidence of diabetes, heart problems and even cancer are increasing. Brain under anesthesia also produces low frequency waves, but only in the fragmented brain. The communication between different parts of brain is stopped by anesthesia chemicals. However in deep sleep the whole brain is active as in deep meditation. How do we induce deep sleep? One way is by doing daily vigorous exercise and meditation. Both help in dissolving temporary memory knots and producing conditions for better sleep. Deep sleep is also helped by reducing external inputs like sound and light. Thus people who sleep in lighted environment do not get deep sleep though extensive REM activity takes place. Similarly when there are too many worries and the mind is not at peace, one cannot sleep deeply.

My mother was m y best ally: Sonu N i gam Sonu Nigam’s mother breathed her last in his arms on Feb 28th. This interview was conducted a few weeks before that, when his mother was seriously ailing. For Sonu, there was no bigger priority than looking after her and ever since she was seriously ill, he was always on tenterhooks accepting shows due to his insecurity of losing her in his absence. Sonu Nigam, 39, is a combination of his talent and his father’s manifestation of his desire for his son to achieve what he was unable to. He sees the deep spiritual reflection of God in his parents whom he surrenders to. Over an hour-long conversation he talks about his mother, his struggling years and why he will always miss Gulshan Kumar. Let’s talk about your mother. For the last few months since she was unwell, I would just hold her hand and start crying. When I was a child, we lived on the second floor and I would get down my school bus and not go up till my mother came down and took me on her back and climbed up. She was a professional singer, but would also do all the household work and look after me. She is my queen. Recently, I made her sing with me on stage in one of the concerts in LA and I made her listen to that recording. Starting from the second half of last year, it has been a difficult period for me be it my mother’s health or complications in my personal life. I had no other escape other than my work. Before every show I would call my mother and say ‘Mummy I don’t know how I will sing today’. But that would change as soon as I went on stage and would merge with my music. She is my best ally and I don’t want to lose her. Nobody other than her would be concerned if I had eaten or had oiled my hair. She is my queen. Let’s talk about your journey from Delhi to Mumbai. I was born in Faridabad but brought up in Delhi and Mumbai. My father had been living hand-to-mouth and literally slept on railway platforms when he came to Mumbai for the first time to become a film singer. My parents were both singers, they sang together and fell in love due to their singing. They eloped to get married. By the age of four, I was singing with them. He could not do what I have done to become a singer be it running behind people, waiting for hours, touching even the feet of peons and people who did not deserve to be in the positions they were in. I was a topper till class tenth and wanted to initially be a scientist. But after tenth once my real voice opened up, it started sounding good. When I was 15, we were paid Rs 50 per show and later started getting Rs 175 per shaadi or jagran. I started saving money for coming to Mumbai later and came finally with my father after my 12th at the age of 18. I had learnt music from listening to CDs and cassettes but acquired theoretical knowledge for four months in Delhi of ragas and taal just enough to not be troubled by people in Mumbai when we came here. Tell us about your early years in Mumbai. My dad has a lot of foresight and decided that I would not do any shows in Mumbai till I became a singer and got to sing my own songs. He knew that if I started earning money from shows, I would not have the time and aggression to rough it out to become a singer. We initially lived with my uncle after which we sold our place in Delhi and bought a one room apartment in Andheri. At that time, only my dad and I had come to Mumbai. I used to cook, sweep the floor and spend a lot of time in the kitchen as I used to practice at night. There were girls who used to roam around below our house. There was a shop below called AJ’s which was run by Ajay. When I would come down, he would tell me that there was a girl passing by who thought of me as the good looking servant in the house and he would tell her that I was actually the owner. My dad had told me one thing that stayed with me always. He said ‘either you struggle now and live a comfortable life later or you can enjoy now and struggle later’. We never had even a landline so I would visit a PCO and keep calling offices of music companies and music directors asking for time to meet them. How did you get your first break? We got down from the train and went straight to Bandra to stay in the cockroachinfested Mansarovar Hotel where Dharmendra had stayed when he had come to Mumbai as my dad was knowledgable about the film industry and knew this. We left our luggage and went straight to Sachin’s Pilgaonkar place. He had heard me as a child in Delhi while judging a competition and had told my father to bring me to him when I grew up. He met us very nicely. Then we went to Anu Malik who had also seen me at a competition in Delhi and I reminded him of being the boy with the fracture. He remembered me and even though he did not have work at that time, he met me nicely. The next person we went to was Usha Khanna as she was known to give breaks to new people. I waited for her seven hours after which I sang

March 2013 Edition

in front of her and she loved my voice. She gave me my first song. My dad and I would roam around in Mumbai in buses and later in my two-wheeler. Then once in 1992, I sung a dummy song which was to be actually sung by SP Balasubramiam. But the shooting had happened on my voice which Gulshan Kumar heard. He was sharp and called for me. I got the call of my life from Ajit Kohli which said ‘Gulshan Kumarji wants to meet you’. He saw me singing and said ‘Oye Kohli to kehra tha aap aap chote ho, but aap to bahut chote ho’. But I will support you and made me sing the original song. Gulshan Kumarji was one true connoiseaur of music and changed the face of music and I miss him. He trusted his composers so much that he would put their pictures even on posters and loved his singers and musicians. He would gift his singers. Gulshanji had told me sing as many songs as you want outside, but sing cover versions only for us. He did not tie me up with any contract but I did not go to Tips even though I was asked by Ramesh Tauraniji from Tips to sing for him. I told him ‘if I cheat Gulshanji today, I will cheat you tomorrow’. I participated in celeb Antakshari and then hosted Sa Re Ga Ma after which I sung my first hit song from Border. Does it bother you that music directors are today singing their own songs? A lot of singers grudge it. I feel there is nothing wrong with them singing but they should not be governed by the greed to sing. A song needs to be sung by a singer whose voice quality is suited for the song. A song becomes a legacy only when you have the right composition, lyrics and singer. You can deliver a hit song but to make it legacy, you need to have the correct voice. I directed music for two films but have not sung for them. I felt Mika’s and Ash King’s voice were better suited for some of the songs and got them to sing it.

Our source says, `Priyanka Chopra was shooting for a special item song at stage number three in the Film City studios for Gupta’s film. Around lunchtime, the entire set came to a

stand still when they learnt that Katrina Kaif had come to the sets.` However Katrina apparently refused to come inside and instead went to choreographer Ahmed Khan’s van where director Siddharth Anand joined them. The source adds, `The trio had a two hour meeting for

However neither Katrina, nor Priyanka bothered to go and greet each other.` After her work was done, Katrina apparently left without stepping inside the sets at all. Insiders say even PC was surprised at that. Another source states, `She had come to see Ahmed since

he is designing all the Bang Bang songs. The choreographer had been unable to meet Kat all these days, as he was busy shooting back-to-back for Sanjay’s sequel. Ahmed too was surprised when he learnt that Kat had come all the way from Bandra just to meet him and discuss the songs.`

Sonal Chauhan loves her legs!

Nana want Raj, Uddhav Thackeray to join hands Nana said he was happy to receive praises for his performance from an actor like megastar Amitabh Bachchan. “I am happy that a senior colleague has liked it. But coming back to the main point, this is not a movie. There are no songs and dances that will entertain. And that is one reason why I am a part of this film.” “This film gives a message and is also an experience. There is nothing to make you happy after seeing the film. I am sure people will not clap after seeing it, and everyone will come out of the movie hall with their lips sealed,” he said.

Patekar said he had an equally good relationship with both NCP chief Sharad Pawar and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, “the reason being that I never sought favours from either of them till date, otherwise friendship ends”. On the film front, the actor has featured in a key role in Ram Gopal Varma’s “The Attacks of 26/11”, a movie based on the 26/11 Mumbai terror strike. In the film, he plays a joint commissioner of police facing an inquiry over the attacks, while Sanjeev Jaiswal is seen as Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab, who was executed recently.

The actress, who apparently is quite proud of her shapely legs, has instructed her stylist to create clothes that sit well above her knees. The model-turned-actress who was last seen in Bbuddah... Hoga Terra Baap - didn’t have a single release last year. But as of now, she is looking forward to her next co-starring Neil Nitin Mukesh. And thanks to her choice of hemlines, she is bound to get noticed.

A source close to her says, `Sonal is very conscious when it comes to her body and the clothes she wears, in public or in private. At the same she feels that her legs should be shown because she feels they are incredible! She has instructed her designers to come up with clothes where her toned legs are visible.` Sonal’s stylist Anish Jain feels the actress has never had to face a faux pas, due to the length of her dresses. `She is pretty as well as hot and she knows how to carry herself in public. Her legs are an asset to her personality and if she insists on flaunting them, it highlights her self-confidence,` adds Anish.

been abuzz with rumours of Saroj Khan being “critically ill” and hospitalized. The inimitable choreographer can’t get over the false rumour. “I am doing fine and I don’t know why my well-wishers so badly want me to be unwell. Allah na kare main beemaar padoon (God forbid I fall ill).” Pressurize her to reveal who could’ve spread these rumours and Saroj Khan sighs, “Nowadays there’s a huge demand for sensationalism in the media. Putting a well-known entertainer

on a hospital bed makes instant news. But I am sorry, I am not obliging the sensation-mongers by falling ill.” The news is that Saroj Khan would be choreographing an item song for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela. The last time they worked together was when Saroj choreographed Madhuri Dixit’s ‘Maar Daala’ number in Devdas. Thereafter the two of them tried to get together on a number of occasions without success.

ontrary to rumours of ill-health Saroj Khan is all set to face one of her career’s biggest challenges. She would be doing a song and dance for Ram Leela on a scale that leaves behind ‘Maar Daala’, the song-and-dance Saroj Khan did with Madhuri Dixit for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas. “Who’s spreading rumours about me being unwell?” fumes choreographer Saroj Khan when I call her up to ask about her health. anbir Kapoor’s schedule is packed this year and yet the actor has managed to make time for one more film. Ranbir is currently shooting for his next, Abhinav Kashyap’s Besharam, but the news is that he is the surprise addition to the cast of Bombay Talkies, a film that celebrates 100 years of Indian cinema. It comprises of four different short films, each of which has been directed by Karan Johar, Dibakar Banerjee, Anurag Kashyap and Zoya Akhtar. This is the first time that the four prolific directors have come together for a movie. A source close to the film reveals, “Ranbir is all set to join the cast of Bombay Talkies, which releases on May 1. He is the sutradhar (narrator); his character will tie the four short films into one movie. Bringing

him on board was a last-minute decision by the makers, but they believe having him will only add to the charm of the film, which already boasts of quite a few talented actors and directors.” Talks are still on about how Ranbir’s character will be showcased in the film. “They are yet to decide how his role will be integrated and who will shoot his part. The makers are working on a couple of innovative ideas,” says the source, adding that Ranbir will begin work on Bombay Talkies by the end of this month. They will have to wrap up soon as it needs to release in May.” When contacted, a spokesperson from the film refused to divulge any information, saying, “We are still discussing the details of the movie with Ranbir. It’s very early to comment on the same.”

Why Ranveer Singh is cracking dirty jokes in Bengali

T

hey say when in Rome, do as the Romans do. And that’s exactly what Ranveer Singh is doing, while shooting for his next film in Kolkata. Sources from the sets say the actor picked up Bengali in order to get to know the film’s crew in Kolkata. Ranveer was also in the city earlier to shoot Vikramaditya Motwane’s film opposite Sonakshi Sinha. A source says, `Ranveer has been shooting for Ali Abbas Zafar’s film. He likes the city and

during one shot was required to interact with local villagers. Ranveer believes in doing whatever it takes to achieve the desired effect for a scene, even if it means adopting some rather unconventional techniques.` The scene required the actor to make the villagers laugh and it was no easy task. `The actor tried his hand in tickling their funny bones but his efforts were in vain, ` adds the source. nstead of giving up, the actor became friendly with one of the

locals and learnt some dirty jokes in Bengali. An insider says, `He joked about with the villagers and instantly got them to laugh. It looked so natural. It was a big surprise for the crew and a bigger one for the villagers.` The actor reveals his secret, `Those guys were being stiff and formal. I figured this would be the best way to break the ice, get a natural roar of laughter out of them. It worked and Ali was very happy.`

bollywood music Music Review :

Nautanki Sala

With some memorable as well as chartbusting compositions to the credit of his three films, KUCH NAA KAHO , BLUFFMASTER and DUM MAARO DUM, Rohan Sippy’s next, NAUTANKI SAALA, being co-produced by cineaudio giants and millionaire club member (subscribers), T-Series, becomes a highly anticipated venture. The music department is being handled by a host of composers; some fresh and old talents like Falak Shabir, Mikey McCleary, Rashid Khan and above all Laxmikant Pyarelal and Anand-Milind. So let’s check out the musical drama that unfolds from the audio of NAUTANKI SAALA! It’s an all-out Falak Shabir show that one comes across first up in ‘Mera Mann Kehne Laga’, where the highly talented artist showcases his all-round versatility as a singer, lyricist and composer in the superb romantic love ballad. The music arrangements are top notch and all the instruments are played and music is produced by Mikey McCleary. There is a lovely reprise version programmed by Abhijit Vaghani. The female version by Tulsi Kumar is well sung and makes for a good hear. The remixed version by DJ Chetas is nicely handled and makes the number more club and disco friendly. Next up is ‘Saadi Galli Sonu Nighm Aaja’ rendered to impeccable

perfection by Ayushmann Khurrana and Neeti Mohan, and is a superb follow up to Ayushmann’s super hit number from VICKY DONOR, ‘Paani Da Rang’. The song, composed by Ayushmaan Khurrana and Rochak Kohli, has predominantly comprehensible Punjabi lyrics by Ayushmaan Khurrana, Rochak Kolhi and Gurpreet Saini, and will surely touch the same heights of popularity of as ‘Paani Da Rang’. The unplugged version relies on minimal arrangements and Ayushmann and Neeti Mohan’s excellent vocals, and is a delight to savour. The remixed version by DJ Chetas is more dance oriented with lots of added pace and beats, but one prefers the original due to its unadulterated charm. Madhuri Dixit’s iconic Anand-Milind-Sameer dance number ‘Dhak Dhak’ (BETA) gets a humorous makeover (by Mikey McCleary) with Saba Azad doing the honours, accompanied by backing vocals of Geet Sagar, Bruno Carvalo, Santosh Sawant and Jovian Soans. Ayushmann Khurrana comes up with another gem of a number, a highly intense passionate love song, ‘Tu Hi Tu’, that has some absolutely mind blowing lyrics by Kausar Munir, to add to the lovely melody and arrangements. Music has been composed by Mikey McCleary, and this

one has chartbuster written all over it! Mikey McCleary gets to compose the next number as well, which is the situational ‘Draamebaaz’, sung by Geet Sagar, and is a sort of a theme song that introduces the two main male leads and talks about their antics and escapades as theater artists. Kausar Munir’s lyrics are just right for the occasion. It’s Rahat Fateh Ali Khan doing what he does best with ‘Sapna Mera Toota’, a touching heartbreak number that has a superb fusion of sufi and western in the Rashid Khan composition. AftabHashim Sabri comes in for

(TEZAAB). The music has been reproduced by Mikey McCleary. The audio of T-Series’ NAUTANKI SAALA is indeed an exhilarating musical experience with just the right blend of all kinds of sounds and arrangements, and has all it takes to emerge as a big success in the audio market. ‘Mera Mann Kehne Laga’, ‘Saadi Galli Aaja’, ‘Sapna Mera Toota’ and ‘Tu Hi Tu’ are sure shot winners, and they are our favourites as well. The popularity of the album will surely help the film open well when it releases this April.

the superb ‘qawwaali’ parts, with lovely back up English vocals by Suzzane D’Mello. Excellent! Saba Azad’s modulating vocals are a heady mix in the whacky and extremely zany and humorous ‘Dil Ki... Toh Lag Gayi’, which is a situational Mikey McCleary’s composition that talks of heart breaks and girls (lyrics by Kausar Munir) in a very interesting manner and should be fun to watch on screen. Nostalgia galores as the album comes to a close and the eighties is revisited again with Laxmikant Pyarelal-Javed Akhtar’s Nitin Mukesh rendered, ‘So Gaya Yeh Jahan’

rash Sydney parties, eat and drink your way across Western Australia, and dive in the tropical sea to your heart’s content. All of this, plus a salary, can be yours if you get one of Australia’s “Best Jobs in the World.” The new campaign is modelled on the wildly successful 2009 campaign by tropical Queensland for the job of caretaker on an island along the Great Barrier Reef - and has already surpassed the

original, with more than 80,000 applications in days. This time, the country is recruiting for six jobs, one for each Australian state except Tasmania. “Unfortunately for me, my time is up, but luckily, for you, the Best Job in the World is back,” says Ben Southall, the Briton who won the 2009 contest, in a video. “Yet now there are not one, but six amazing jobs in Australia up for grabs.”

The “Chief Funster” position would allow access to top Sydney parties and festivals as a VIP, while Western Australia’s “Chief Taster” would have to eat and drink his or her way around the state. Queensland’s Park Ranger could dive his days away. Each position, open to adults 18 and older eligible to work in Australia on a business visa, provides a salary of A$100,000 for six months. Southall said it

Video applications will be accepted until April 10, after which 150 people will be shortlisted. The 2009 campaign within days became one of the most popular items on the Internet and attracted almost 35,000 entries from some 200 countries, including a hoax entry from Osama bin Laden. The current campaign has already more than doubled that, with 85,000 applications, said an official at Tourism Australia.

Siddharth Roy Kapur to deliver closing address at Harvard India Conference

S

iddharth Roy Kapur, the Managing Director Studios of Disney UTV, has been invited to address the students and faculty at the

prestigious Harvard India Conference hosted by the Harvard Business School in Boston. The theme of the conference is India vs India: Local Strength or

Global Growth. Siddharth will speak on Indian Cinema’s trajectory over the past decade, with a focus on what the future holds for the largest film pro-

ducing nation in the world. He will discuss the evolution of this extremely dynamic and high growth market as the Indian film industry strikes a balance

between nurturing the massive domestic opportunity and scaling it to greater heights internationally. “It’s a huge honour to represent the Indian film fraternity on this platform. Indian films today are being made with a keen eye on a global palate and we have seen a steadily growing acceptance for our movies from international audiences. It will be interesting to share experiences with the students and faculty at Harvard and to engage with them in what I hope is a productive discussion about how to further enhance the footprint of Indian content around the world.” The India Conference at Harvard brings together business leaders, government officials and philanthropists to engage with Harvard students and professors on a global platform. Siddharth will feature amongst a roster of global luminaries to embrace the most powerful reality of India: that there is no single, universal Indian narrative.

Fox Star Studio’s Jolly LLB in legal trouble

Fox Star Studio’s film Jolly LLB directed by Subhash Kapoor featuring Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani has run into legal trouble. The makers of the film have been served with a legal notice by an advocate in Meerut who claims that the promos of Jolly LLB on air currently are showing lawyers in Meerut in a poor light and are defamatory. The advocate, Dr. Parag Garg is now demanding that Fox Star Studios remove the trailers from broadcast. The film which is based on a fictional story about a Meerut lawyer is supposed to be a satirical take on the legal system and is slated for a March 15 release. Confirming the news, Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios, says that they have since received the legal notice and their legal team is looking into the matter, so no comments will be made at this stage.

It’s purely our mutual excitement about the subject matter which is making us collaborate.” Now two months later, one hears John is out of the project apparently because he couldn’t see “eye to eye” with Ramu. Says a source close to the project, “When John heard Ramu was making a sequel to Satya, he was immediately enamoured of the idea of revisiting those iconic characters from

the first film. But soon John realized the Satya sequel has no connection whatsoever with the first film. That’s where the differences started. The two of them decided to part ways rather than work on different pages for the same project.” While refusing to divulge details of their parting, Ramu admitted, “John is not a part of the production .But the film has already started shooting and is about 30% complete. Satya 2 is slated for an early June release.”

Lyon’s axing a tactical blunder by Australia: Dravid

F

ormer India skipper Rahul Dravid has termed Australia’s decision to drop Nathan Lyon from the ongoing second Test as a “tactical blunder” and said the visiting captain Michael Clarke must take some responsibility for the off-spinner’s axing. The Australian team management have come in for sharp criticism for not playing Lyon, who was dropped in favour of Xavier

Doherty and Glenn Maxwell, a decision which Dravid feels has costed the tourists a chance in the second Test at Hyderabad, where the Aussies lost by a whopping innings and 135 runs. “The biggest tactical blunder that Michael Clarke has to take some responsibility for is the decision not to play Nathan Lyon,” Dravid said. “They are being too clever with their team selections. Lyon didn’t

run through the Indian side in Chennai but he bowled particularly well there, especially in the second innings, he looked like he was getting some confidence. “It’s never easy to come to India and bowl to some of the Indian batsmen on these kind of wickets they are so used to. By dropping Nathan Lyon, it shocked whatever confidence he gained in that Test,” he said. Dravid believed the Hyderabad

Test was headed for an early finish if Indian spinners performed to their expectations. He said Doherty and Maxwell are no match for the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja. “Their (Australia’s) ability to compete in this Test match was severely compromised by the fact they didn’t have any quality spinner to be able to put any pressure on India throughout the day. We’re

headed for a fourth-day finish,” he originally said. “We will see a completely different track when the Indian spinners bowl. It will be tough going for Australia ... at least in Chennai you felt they were in the contest but the first two days here they have been completely outplayed. “The pressure the Australian spinners were able to put on was nowhere near what India will put on the Australian pair.”

Pace spearhead Brett Lee to be KKR bowling mentor too

A

ustralian speedster Brett Lee, who spearheads the Kolkata Knight Riders’ pace attack, on Monday replaced Pakistan great Wasim Akram as the team’s bowling mentor. Lee, who has retired from international cricket, will shoulder the twin responsibilities in the upcoming Indian Premier League scheduled to be held in April-May. Lee took up the position after Akram, who held it for three years, resigned expressing his desire to spend more time with his family as his two sons Taimur and Akbar are barely in their teens. “We are fortunate that someone of the caliber of Brett Lee, who in addition to being a key member of the team, will also mentor the bowling unit,” KKR CEO Venky Mysore said in a statement. “The bowling unit and the entire team will benefit from Brett’s leadership in this area.” While accepting the role, Lee said, “The experience with KKR over the past three years has been fantastic.” “We have become a closely-knit unit under the leadership of skipper Gautam Gambhir and Head Coach Trevor Bayliss. As we get ready for IPL 2013 as the defending champions, I am honoured to take on this additional responsibility,” he added.

Saina Nehwal leads a record Indian field in All England Championship

O

lympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal will return to Great Britain with a renewed hope of clinching the prestigious All England title but a tough draw awaits her in the women’s singles of the Super Series Premier event, which starts with the qualifiers on Tuesday. Ever since 2007, Saina has been playing in the $400,000 All England Championship and her best performance so far is a semifinal finish at the 2010 edition. In the last two years, Saina reached the quarterfinals of the event before being humbled by lower-ranked players and the second seeded Indian will have to be on her guard this year as well. The Commonwealth Games gold medallist will open her campaign against Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand. The Indian has played her four times and always had an upper hand but in their last encounter at Korea Open, the Thai girl had stretched Saina to three games. If she clears the first hurdle, the 22-year-old will next take on Minatsu Mitani of Japan, who had spoilt her French Open title hopes when she beat the Indian at the finals. Even though Saina has beaten her thrice in the past,

she needs to be careful of the Japanese. If she can cross the second hurdle as well, then it will be either sixth seed Shixian Wang or Yanjiao Jiang in the quarterfinals. For the records, Saina holds a 3-1 advantage against Shixian but all the wins have been threegame affairs. However, Saina is likely to prefer Shixian over Jiang as the Indian has never beaten the world number 12 in their five encounters. “The draw is tough, it always happens that way. But I will try my best to come up well,” Saina said. “I took all the practice in good direction. I have a little knee problem, otherwise I am alright,” Saina said. “I am doing my best all the times, hopefully, I will do well. Let us see what happens,” she said. Saina’s younger colleague and rising shuttler P V Sindhu too will start in the main draw for the first time and will meet Ongbamrungphan Busanan of Thailand in the opening round, whom she had beaten at the Badminton Asia Youth Under 19 Championships last year. If she can cross the first hurdle, Sindhu will take on fourth seed Juliane Schenk. The Hyderabadi had lost to the German at the Indonesia Open last year.

In the men’s singles, world number 11 Parupalli Kashyap will open his campaign against Jen Hao Hsu of Chinese Taipei and will likely take on Japan’s Kenichi Tago, seeded seventh, in the second round if he manages to cross the opening hurdle. If Kashyap crosses the second round as well then he is likely to lock horns against second seed Chen Long of China.

Chen has beaten Kashyap three times in the past but in their earlier clash, the Indian had defeated him in straight-games at the Indonesian Open last year. “It is a challenging draw. I feel if I can get past the initial rounds, I can go much further in the tournament. The Chinese Taipei guy is also good and Tago is unpredictable, you never know when he will play well,” Kashyap said.

Ajay Jayaram is the other Indian who will start in the men’s singles main draw, taking on Zhengming Wang of China in the first round. Jayaram has beaten the Chinese at the Hong Kong Open last year and will look to repeat the performance. If he wins, Jayaram is expected to face top seed and world number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia.

Ronaldo Old Trafford return ‘difficult’: Evra

C

ristiano Ronaldo returns to Old Trafford this week when his Real Madrid side take on Manchester United in their Champions’League last-16 second leg amid speculation that he might return on a more permanent basis. One British Sunday newspaper reported he would be willing take a massive pay cut to rejoin United, the club he left for a world record 80 million pounds (92 million euros, $120 million). But, according to another, manager Alex Ferguson has rubbished reports the former idol would be back with the club next summer. All the same, United captain Patrice Evra is hopeful his old team-mate is overwhelmed by the reception awaiting him. “It is difficult when you play with love... Cristiano will get a great reception on Tuesday because of what he achieved for Manchester United...” “Also, he still loves the club. I remember after the game in Madrid we had a chat. He said it was going to be more difficult to come here. “This is his house, so there will be a lot of emotion. I hope he doesn’t play well because of that. “But Ronaldo is a winner. He is a big competitor. If he can win against Manchester United he will do it.”

Panchakarma & Detox

Dr. C.R.S. Kumar Panchakarma and its importance Ayurveda, the science of life or science of longitivity, views human health or body as intimately connected with the environment and

with the “panchamahabutas” (Forces of nature). Most of the diseases occur at any stage due to imbalance in these eco-human connections. Ayurveda is one among the oldest scientific medical systems in the world with wealth of clinical knowledge and experience, is structured and formulated to treat or cure the imbalances successfully. Ayurveda accepts the common origin for the cosmos and human body. In the process of creation, Ayurveda believes there were two kinds of substances, which are non

21b

material and material. Non material substances are “trigunas” (Satva, Rajo and Tamo gunas), whereas, materialistic substances are Panchamahabutas (Prithvi, ap, thejo, vaju and akasa), earth, water, fire, air and eather. Fire is one among the five panchanmahabuts, which also place major role in the transformation of human body and also in the day to day chemical, physiological and physical activities of human life. Ayurvedic Treatments Ayurvedic treatment is also called as Chikista in Sanskrit, has been divided in to so many types, Acharya Vaghbhta divided in to two major types followed by 6 subtypes. Which includes Langana (Reduction), Svedana (Sudation), Rookshana (drying), Brihana (Tonification), Snenhana (Oleation) and Sthambhana (Astringent). Acharya Charaka, divided the Ayurvedic Treatment as two major types as, Samana (palliation) and Sodhana (Purification or elimination) Palliation type of treatment mainly involves reduction of aggravated or vitiated doshas (Bio- Humors), this kind of practice, which mainly include taking some supplements or Ayurvedic Medicines is widely used currently. This only gives partial relief to the symptoms. Where-

as, treatment which starts with the (Panchakarma) purification or by elimination methods will treats the condition to its roots. So that reoccurrence will be very minimal or sometimes do not recur. Importance of AGNI (Fire)In both kinds of treatment the important factor is “AGNI”. According to ayurvedic medicine, it is the only one we are treating for. In most of the disease the root cause will be simple indigestion, which turns creating toxins in the body also denoted as “AMA”. These toxins will get absorbed by the system (RASA) and accumulated in target organ (DHATHU) and cause disease (ROGA). It is very important to keep the digestive tract free of toxins, by improving AGNI. Keeping healthy digestive tract is only possible through the proper elimination methods (regular Panchakarma). Panchakaram can be done both for preventive and curative purpose. Panchakarma -Types The most confusing point for most of the people is where to start? What to expect? What exactly this will do for us? So many. In order to answer the questions step by step manner, it is important to know what is Panchakarma involves, how many days it takes, what are types and their benefits. Panchakarma is combination of five different thera-

pies. 1. Vamana (Medicated Vomiting) 2. Virechana (Medicated purgation) 3 Anuvasna Vasti ( Medicated oil enema) 4 Niruha vasti (Medicated Herbal decoction Enema) 5 Nasya (Nasal medication). Panchakarma – benefits In order to explain the benefits of Panchakarma, it is very important to know what the Bio humors (Three dhoshas). Three dhosha, Vata, Pitta and kapha are the Bio humors which balance creates health and imbalance results disease. What is Bio – Humors? All activities in the universe as well as human are grouped in to three main basic functions, viz. creation, organization and destruction. These functions are represented in universe by three energies, i.e. moon or rain or principle of cohesion, sun or principle of thermo genesis and wind or principle of propulsion. Ether and air (Akasha and Vayu) combine to form Vata dosha, which is responsible for controlling destruction – Vasti (medicated enema is more suitable Panchakarma type) Pitta is formed by the element of fire and small amount of water. This is also called as thermogenic principle, which is responsible for digestion and metabolism – As the seat of pitta is liver (middle part of body),

so the virechana Karma (Downwards elimination is more suitable) Water and Earth combine to form biological water humor or kapha, which is responsible for new growth, strength, protection of all organs and maintaining the creation - As the seat of Kapha is the chest (upper part of the body), so the vamana (Upward elimination) is more suitable procedure. Ayurveda teaches that the balance of three subtle energies, known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha, maintains health. Kapha is responsible for strength and immunity. It also provides the basic substratum to all the tissues of the body. Biological fire humor or Pitta is responsible for digestion and metabolism and biological air humor or vata is responsible for all the movementsgross and subtle in the body. In order to balance these subtle energies, it is first important to identify the dosha which is in imbalanced, and then accordingly select the Panchakarma therapy to treat the condition from roots. Causes, symptoms, treatment for cervical cancer

T

he cervix, a part of a woman’s reproductive system, is a passage that connects the uterus to the vagina. It is the lower, narrow part of the uterus, which allows the menstrual blood to flow out into the vagina during menstruation. During pregnancy the cervix is tightly closed to keep the foetus inside the uterus until birth. Another important function of the cervix is during child birth, when the cervix dilates or widens to allow the passage of the foetus from the uterus to the vagina. Globally, the incidence of cervical cancer is 5 lakh new cases every year, and India accounts for 27% of those. In urban areas it forms 40% of all cancers and in rural 60%. Cervical Cancer Causes: Although the exact causes of cervical cancer are not known, several risk factor are linked with diseases. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV): HPV is a group of virus that can infect the cervix. Most women with cancer of the cervix are infected with HPV. These viruses are transmitted from person to person during unprotected sexual contact. Because HPV is spread primarily through sex, women who start having sex at a young age, or those who have multiple sexual partners, are more likely to have HPV. Early sexual activity: The cells

lining the cervix do not fully mature until the age of 18 and this increases the risk of HPV. Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD): Women with cervical cancer generally have a history of STD infection. Diseases such as Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphills or HIV/ AIDS increase the risk of HPV. Smoking: Cigarette smokers are more likely to develop cervical cancer. Possible long-term use of Oral contraceptives: Using birth control pills for a long period (over five years) may increase the risk of cervical cancer among women with HPV infection. However, the risk decreases when women stop using the pill. Cervical Cancer Symptoms: What do you need to watch out for? Abnormal bleeding: Women with cervical cancer may experience abnormal vaginal bleeding. This can be heavy or light bleeding during the month. Unusual heavy discharge: An increased vaginal discharge is also a symptom of cervical cancer. It may be foul smelling, watery, thick or contain mucus. Pelvic pain: Pelvic pain that is not related to the normal menstrual cycle can be a cervical symptom. The pain can range from a dull ache to sharp throbs that can last hours.

Pain during urination: Bladder pain or pain during urination can be symptom of advanced cervical cancer. Unexpected bleeding: Bleeding between regular menstrual periods, after sexual intercourse, or during a pelvic exam can be cervical cancer symptoms. This is

due the irritation of the cervix during these activities. Please remember that these symptoms are not sure signs of cervical cancer. But if you do have these symptoms, consult a doctor so that you can treat the problem at any early stage. Cervical Cancer Treatment

The treatment for cervical cancer depends on tumor size and location, the stage of the disease, and the patient’s age and overall health. Cervical cancer, most often, can be treated with one or a combination of treatments; surgery, radiation, and / or chemotherapy.

ostly known as a good source of Vitamin C, oranges are not only good for your health but also one of the most important natural skin-care products. Its toning properties improve your skin texture and colour. Both Vitamin C and citric acid in oranges restore collagen in your body. Collagen helps in skin-firming and prevents ageing of the skin. Citric acid helps to reduce wrinkles and softens the skin, giving you a much younger-looking skin. It exfoliates the skin, removing the dead skin cells, and cleanses the pores, helping in acne prevention. Oranges also have Vitamin A, which, along with Vitamin C, helps reverse sun damage, protecting your skin from cancer. It is also used in spas for skin polish — it improves the texture of your skin as it exfoliates and hydrates it well. Clean the orange peel with salt to remove

all germs and then put them in a blender to make a thick paste. Add a tablespoon of yogurt, a few drops of lemon juice and a teaspoon of honey into the paste and mix well. Wash your face with warm water and apply the pack. It will open up the pores. Let the pack remain for an hour and let it dry. Wash with cold water after an hour. The pack will remove all the dead skin and dirt from your face and give you a fresh feel. After washing away the pack completely, apply a thin coat of face cream to prevent the skin from drying up. Orange peel juice can be used on the scalp to reduce dandruff and oily conditions. The peel can be mashed into a pulp and used as a hair pack. It helps to condition the hair and cleanse the scalp. A tip: Rub the inside peel of an orange on your skin to tighten it.
