teacher, who was presented a national award by president Pratibha Patil for her outstanding contribution to the field of education today, donated the cash prize of Rs25,000 to create education infrastructure for the flood-affected children of Leh. Dr Meera Singh, principal of the Laureate Public School, Shimla, made a bank draft of the cash prize of Rs25,000 she received from the president and deposited the same in the prime minister’s Relief Fund, a Himachal Pradesh government official said. “She showed kind-heartedness and magnanimity of a teacher when she donated entire amount of cash prize to create education infrastructure for the flood-affected children of Leh,” he said. At a function in New Delhi, about 374 teachers from different parts of the country were facilitated with national awards for the year 2009 for their outstanding contribution to the field of education on the occasion of teachers’ day. Singh has earlier been awarded prestigious Paul Herris Fellowship, Green Earth Award and Bhartiya Sahitya Samman Award besides other awards and recognition from various government and non-government organisations, he said. She is president of the Shimla Amateur Garden and Environment Society for last three years and has made “significant contributions in successful implementation of the Green Shimla and Clean Shimla Project,” he added.

Nuns belonging to the order of the Missionaries of Charity take part in Mother Teresa’s Feast day mass in Kolkata on September 5, 2010. Hundreds of visitors gathered at the tomb of Mother Teresa in eastern India to pay tribute on the thirteenth anniversary of her death and to pray she will attain sainthood.

Washington: The United States on Sunday released a 44-cent postal stamp in the honour of Mother Teresa, acknowledging her unrelenting humanitarian service for nearly half a century. The US Postal Service issued the stamp during a special ceremony held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. The stamp features a portrait of Mother Teresa, who received a Nobel prize in 1979, painted by award-winning artist Thomas Blackshear II of Colorado Springs. Blackshear II, was also in attendance at the event. Mother Teresa, who died in Kolkata on September 5, 1997, and is buried there, was awarded honorary US citizenship in 1996.

India eyeing 75 medals, third spot in Games: Lalit Bhanot

I

ndia is targeting to win over 75 medals and secure the third position in the medal rankings in the Commonwealth Games next month, Organising Committee secretary general Lalit Bhanot said Thursday. ‘We won 52 medals in the (2006) Melbourne Commonwealth Games, the best Indian tally in the history of the Games, and secured the fourth position,’ Bhanot said in an interaction with mediapersons here. ‘But, this time we are sure to get

the third spot with over 75 medals. However, our effort will be to secure the second position after Australia,’ he said. ‘In Melbourne, we won two silvers in athletics. This time, maybe we can hope for six to eight medals,’ he said adding that with participation by top Jamaican, Kenyan, Australian and English athletes, the athletics events in the Commonwealth Games are usually of world championship levels. According to chef-de-mission of the Indian contingent Bhubaneswar

Kalita, India’s medal chances lie in shooting, archery, boxing, wrestling, swimming, weightlifting and tennis. ‘However, our athletes are preparing for all the 17 events and we will improve upon our last medal tally (in the 2006 Games),’ he said. Asked what advantages the Indian players held on home turf, the chefde-mission said: ‘One, of course, is the climate as our players will be performing in conditions they are used to. Then, our players have access

to the Games grounds for training. And then, there is support from the home crowd.’ On the Indian players’ training, Kalita said that most of the players have participated in world championships of their respective disciplines ahead of the Oct 3-14 Games. ‘Our players have faced most of the foreign competitors who will be coming here. We will put up a tough fight,’ he said, adding that foreign coaches have been roped in for many of the 17 disciplines.

With nearly 490 players and athletes, India would be fielding its largest ever Commonwealth Games contingent in the New Delhi Games, Kalita said. The final list of the Indian contingent will be announced in the next one week, he said. ‘Add to that officials, coaches and physiotherapists, the total strength of the Indian contingent will be over 700,’ he said.

India lets grain rot

INSTEAD OF FEEDING POOR Of this about 10 million tonnes, having seen at least one monsoon, is at risk of rotting, which will cost the country around Rs 17,000 crore. In Punjab, 49,000 tonnes of this foodgrain is ready to be destroyed after spending three monsoons — to be fit for human consumption, it cannot endure more than one — covered in tarpaulin.

A

day after the Prime Minister urged a quick start to a national food-security network, it has emerged that his government may let foodgrain — enough to feed 140 million poor people for a month — rot, instead of spending money and effort distributing it to the poor. Warning of an “emergency situation”, a highly placed source told Hindustan Times that 17.8 million tonnes of wheat and rice are being similarly stored under tarpaulin across India. Of this about 10 million tonnes, having seen at least one monsoon, is at risk of rotting, which will cost the country around Rs 17,000 crore. In Punjab, 49,000 tonnes of this foodgrain is ready to be destroyed after spending three monsoons — to be fit for human consumption, it cannot endure more than one — covered in tarpaulin. “The wheat stocks have rotted,” said Punjab Food and Civil Supplies Principal Secretary S.P. Singh, referring to 49,000 tonnes bought

September 2010 Edition

from farmers nearly three years ago. The fate of the remaining wheat and rice stored under tarpaulin will be discussed on Monday by an Empowered Group of Ministers (eGOM), which in March had rejected a suggestion to release grain to states at subsidised prices fixed for families above the poverty line. The meeting lists on its agenda the “offloading of 2-3 million tonnes of grain in the open market”, which implies the larger issue of rotting grain may not be addressed, or its release to India’s poor. At a time when the government is trying to rein in its growing food subsidy bill (Rs 55,000 crore and likely to balloon by three times if the right to food becomes law), the finance and food ministries are reluctant to spend an estimated Rs 5,000 crore on distribution.

THE COUNTER ARGUMENT: By allowing the grain to rot, they are wasting more than three times the amount. Moreover, with India being home to a quarter of the world’s hungry people and a third of its malnourished children, foodgrain cannot be allowed to rot; the state must find a way. Since May, the Food Corporation of India, the agency holding the largest percent age of grain, made a series of suggestions to the Centre. One of these was to distribute the grain to 150 of India’s poorest districts, presently being considered by the National Advisory Council as a proving ground for universal distribution of subsidised foodgrain as one solution to widespread poverty and hunger. Of the 59 million tonnes of grain stored by the FCI and state agencies across India, 42 million tonnes is in covered buildings. Grain stored under tarpaulin has been rising. It was

9.4 million tonnes in 2008; 16 million tonnes in 2009 and 17.8 million tonnes in 2010 (as on June 1).

300 million Indians go hungry everyday! According to the Global Hunger Index, India ranks 65th out of 88 countries, with a hunger rate of 23.9. India, which was largely unaffected by the recent global economic slowdown, however, appears to have made little progress in tackling hunger and malnutrition. The situation remains ‘alarming’ in the country on this front. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh projected a food stock of 50 million tonne. Yet, close to 300 million Indians go without food every day!

Indian student visas fall by half in Australia T

he number of Indians granted student visas in Australia during the last financial year has fallen to 29,721, less than half of the number in 2008-09. Overall, the number of international student visas dropped more than 16 per cent. The results follow a year of turmoil in the education sector, with legislative changes, the global financial crisis and student security issues putting pressure on student numbers, The Age newspaper reported on Thursday. In 2008-09; 65,503 Indian passport holders were granted Australian student visas across all education sectors. But in 2009-10, the number fell to just 29,721. Overall, 50,540 fewer international students were granted visas to study in Australia in 2009-10 compared with 2008-09. A spokeswoman for Immigration Minister Chris Evans said despite the fall, Australia was still receiving large numbers of applications for student visas, but that “the government understands it is a difficult environment for the international education sector at the moment”. She said the government had made changes to “protect the quality of

In 2008-09; 65,503 Indian passport holders were granted Australian student visas across all education sectors. But in 2009-10, the number fell to just 29,721. Overall, 50,540 fewer international students were granted visas to study in Australia in 2009-10 compared with 2008-09. education Australia offers and ensure the skilled migration programme is more responsive to the nation’s skills needs”. “Education is a major export market for Australia and there must be a focus on the quality of the export, not just numbers of students enrolling in courses,” the spokeswoman said. Stephen Connelly, president of the International Education Association of Australia, said the drop was not surprising but very worrying. “There is so much goodwill we generate from having international students in our country, and we are absolutely shooting ourselves in the foot at the moment,” he said. Connelly said the government and opposition had sent negative messages to potential students during the federal election campaign and work had to begin on improving Australia’s

reputation. If the problems were not tackled quickly, Connelly said, there would be a further significant drop in student numbers. “Applications being received by agents would indicate that the numbers will go down even further. There’s a lot more pain in store, I would say.” But he played down the significance of student security issues, which flared up in Victoria last year following a series of allegedly racist attacks on Indian students. “(Student security) would be lower down on the list of reasons than the difficulties of getting a visa and the lack of differentiation among providers,” Connelly said. National Union of Students president Carla Drakeford said: “International student decline is dangerous for the university sector -

not only because it creates a hole in university funding, but also because of the innate value international students bring to our community and higher education sector.” Drakeford said student security, accommodation and cost of living were all contributing factors in the drop, but she welcomed the government’s recent legislative changes designed to weed out “dodgy” providers. Matt McGowan, Victorian secretary of the National Tertiary Education Union, said the drop had

“very real potential to undermine the financial viability of some of our universities and other education providers”. The acting chief executive of the Australian Council for Private Education and Training, Claire Field, agreed that the government needed to act quickly to reverse the decline. “The current and projected downturn in international student numbers is placing our economy, our education industry, and Australian jobs at risk.”

Andhra student dies in water rafting accident in Mississippi A 24-year-old Indian student of Louisiana State University, who was on a rafting adventure with his friends, drowned after his boat flipped in the Mississippi river. Gotham Joseph Smiles, a Masters student of engineering at the LSU, who was rafting without a life jacket, died after the accident on Saturday 4th September, the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) said in a statement. The accident is reported to have happened around 8 pm local time. Joseph, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, went to Mississippi along with eight other friends to experience a Canoe trip and drowned in water when their boat flipped. “Joseph was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident; life guards jumped in to the water to save him but it was already too late,” TANA said in a statement. A native of Visakhapatnam, Joseph came to the US in January 2009 after earning a B Tech from MVGR Engineering College, Vijayanagaram. He joined LSU to pursue Masters in Engineering and he was in the last semester of his course. Joseph is survived by his father Samuel Smiles, who is at the Bharat Heavey Plates and Vessels Ltd (BHPV), and mother Hemalatha, a Professor at Andhra University. He also has a younger sister. The Telugu body said Joseph’s father has sought help in sending the remains of his son as soon as possible. Daggubati Purandeswari, Minister of State for Human Resource Development (Higher Education), called Prasad Thotakura of TANA to enquire about the accident and offered any help in contacting US authorities or the Ministry of External Affairs in expediting the case. The organisation, which is working to send Joseph’s body back to his family, expects his remains to reach Visakhapatnam by September 8.

Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, left, receives the honorary rank of Group Captain of the Indian Air Force (IAF) from Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik in New Delhi, India, Friday, Sept. 3, 2010. According to a local news agency, Tendulkar is the first sportsperson to be conferred a rank by IAF and the first personality with no aviation background to receive the honor.

India’s air force honours Tendulkar NEW DELHI — India’s batting great Sachin Tendulkar was on Friday awarded the honorary rank of group captain by the chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF) for his contribution to cricket. Tendulkar, 37, was conferred the honour by Air Chief Marshall Pradeep Naik, amid loud applause from fellow officers at a ceremony in the Indian capital. “It was wishful thinking (that I would be part of the armed forces) and it has come true today. I’m extremely proud to be a part of the IAF. So dream, because dreams do come true,” Tendulkar said after being inducted. Naik said he hoped Tendulkar’s induction would inspire India’s youth to join its armed forces. “Sachin’s association

will help in spreading awareness about our force,” he said. Tendulkar is the first sportsperson to be conferred a rank by the IAF and the first personality without an aviation background to receive the honour. Tendulkar, who made his international debut on a tour of Pakistan in 1989, is the leading run-getter in both Test and one-day cricket. He has scored 13,837 runs from 169 Tests with 48 centuries and 17,598 runs in 442 one-day matches with 46 hundreds. Tendulkar is also the only batsman to score a doublecentury in one-day cricket, making 200 not out against South Africa in Gwalior earlier this year. His next assignment for the top-ranked Indian team is a two-Test home series against Australia, starting on October 1.

Solve your queries on Family Law (Divorce) - exclusive interview with an experienced Barister & Solicitor, Mr. Raniga In order to provide information to our readers, especially in relation to the area of family law, including divorce, Indiantimes approached Mr Raniga, barrister and solicitor practicing from 805 Nicholson Street, North Carlton, in this area for the last 25-30 years. Mr Raniga is a member of the Family Law section of the Law Council of Australia. Clearly with the increasing number of students and migrants coming from sub-continents, there are numerous questions which often get asked. IndianTimes >> If someone got married in India or overseas and they have a marriage certificate from overseas, can that person make an application for divorce in Australia? Mr Raniga>> It does not matter where the marriage took place. The fact that the person was married overseas will not preclude that person from making an application for divorce. The fact that the person was married in India does not mean that that person will have to travel to India to make an application for divorce. IndianTimes >> When can a person make an application for divorce and what are the legal requirements? Mr Raniga>> The fi rst requirement is that the person making the application for divorce must have jurisdiction in this country. The person making the application need not be an Australian citizen or Australian resident. The person making the application could rely on the fact that that person ordinarily lives in Australia and has done so for a period of 12

months immediately before filing this application. Or alternatively, the person could, if that person regards Australia as his or her home and intends to live indefi nitely in Australia. As you are aware, most of the students would have come into this country have come with the precise intention of making this country his or her home and has intention of making an application for bridging or like Visa to reside in this country. If the intention to reside in this country is there then the Court has got jurisdiction to hear the application. IndianTimes >> What is the other main requirement? Mr Raniga>> The person making the application must be in a position to allege that he or she has been separated from the spouse for at least a period of 12 months. The application can only be made after the 12 months has elapsed. The defi nition of “separation” is rather wide. It is possible for a person to secure a divorce even though that person has been residing under one roof with the spouse. It is possible for there to be a separation between the parties if the parties have been living separately, but still under one roof. IndianTimes >> Are there any special requirements in order for the parties to secure divorce when living separately under one roof? Mr Raniga>> Yes, the person has to swear an affidavit swearing to the effect that the parties have been living separately but under one roof. In that instance, the Court has to be convinced that the parties have lived in separate rooms, have generally done their own things, such as cooking, cleaning, washing etc. They have not had an active social life together including sexual

relationship with each other. It should be understood that one single act which is contrary to the matters that are listed above would not prevent a person from seeking to secure divorce whilst living under one roof.

IndianTimes >> What if the applicant does not know the whereabouts of the spouse and the respondent spouse has disappeared or returned to India and the address is not known? In that situation, is it possible to secure a divorce?

IndianTimes >> Is there any other legal requirement such as length of the marriage?

Mr Raniga>> Yes, it is possible to make an additional application which can usually be listed at the same time as the hearing seeking leave of the Court to have the requirement for service cancelled. The Court may make an order for substituted service and by that it means that the Court may allow the applicant to serve the divorce application on relatives or employers or it could require that the applicant make attempts to do an electoral roll search and other such enquiries.

Mr Raniga>> If the parties have been married for less than 2 years then the legal requirement is that both parties should attend counseling and secure a certificate from the counselor that they have attempted reconciliation. If it is not practicable such as one party is overseas and the other party is here, or the circumstances of the separation are such that any attempt to counseling would be futile then the Court has discretion to grant divorce notwithstanding nonprovision of the counseling certificate. If an exemption is sought in relation to this legal requirement, then an affidavit will have to be sworn to establish the exceptional circumstances. IndianTimes >> Do both parties have to be in Australia and does the divorce application have to be served on the spouse? Mr Raniga>> No. Both parties do not have to be in Australia. The divorce application would have to be served and unless co-operation can be secured from the respondent spouse that he/she will sign an acknowledgment of service of receiving the document, then the divorce application would have to be served personally. The divorce application can be served by professional process server or else it can be served by a relative or friend. The person serving the document on the respondent spouse will have to swear an affidavit of service.

IndianTimes >> Are the children’s issues also determined by the Court at the divorce hearing? Mr Raniga>> The divorce hearing is a separate matter and the court will not deal with any issues pertaining to custody or contact but before the Court grants the divorce the Court would be interested in securing information about the welfare of the children ie financial support, schooling issues and health issues. The Court has power to not grant divorce if the Court is of the view that the parties are not generally taking care of the welfare of the children but generally the Court will grant divorce even if the Court is not satisfied that both parties have taken responsibility for the children of the marriage. IndianTimes >> Is it possible for both the husband and the wife to make a joint application for divorce and is it possible for the parties to seek convenient way of securing a divorce? Mr Raniga>> It is possible for both

parties to make a joint application for divorce and both parties would be swearing or affi rming an affidavit as to the date of the separation. If it is subsequently discovered that both parties have indeed been living together until recently and have invented the separation date in order to secure divorce, then both parties could potentially face prosecution for perjury. IndianTimes >> Does the applicant and the other spouse have to go to Court? Mr Raniga>> If the parties do not have any children, and there are no complicating issues such as the marriage being less than 2 years or that the divorce application cannot be served, then there is no requirement to attend Court. However, if there are children of the marriage, then the applicant or his lawyer has to attend Court. The responding spouse does not have to attend Court and would only attend Court if the Respondent spouse opposes the divorce on the grounds that the separation had not taken place for 12 months. IndianTimes >> Is the divorce application costly? Mr Raniga>> To start with, there are filing fees in the sum of $550.00 which must be paid to the Federal Magistrates Court. Unless the party can establish that he/she is on a pension or would face hardship in order to secure the fees, the fees would normally be payable. The professional legal fees would vary depending on whether there are any children of the marriage or whether the marriage is less than 2 years and whether an application needs to be made to the Court to secure cancellation of the service requirement or secure substitute service.

Sources said that a farmer had been rearing this deer in a large scale animal farm in Bandarahena, Arachchikattuwa, which had escaped to the jungle and started attacking cattle and had caused severe injuries to 14 cows and bulls since 22 July, police said. They said at least two Cows had been killed by the deer. Villagers said that although they had complained to the Wild Life Department Officials, no action had been taken about the unruly animal. Later the deer was captured alive and taken away by the Wild Life Officials, sources added.

srael and the Palestinian Authority detained over 250 Hamas members in the West Bank night before direct talks between PA President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington. Tel Aviv and the PA launched the round-up after the Islamist militant group claimed responsibility for an attack near Hebron that killed four Israeli settlers, including a married couple with five children. Around 500 Israeli colonists live in heavily fortified enclaves in the city among more than 100,000 Palestinians. Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad’s office issued a statement charging that the

attack was aimed at undermining his administration’s effort to build international support for “the Palestinian position and ending the occupation.” The talks in Washington are to focus on core issues of the conflict, including the status of east Jerusalem, which the international community has earmarked as the capital of the Palestinians’ future state. Mr Netanyahu said that he would not let the shooting derail the negotiations. But the right-wing PM appeared intent on derailing the talks himself after an aide announced that Jerusalem should remain the “undivided capital of

Israel. “The position of the prime minister is that Jerusalem is one of the core issues that are on the table at the talks,” the aide said. “Our position is that Jerusalem will remain the undivided capital of Israel.” Mr Abbas has warned that he may pull out of talks if Israel fails to extend a 10-month moratorium on West Bank settlement construction that ends in late September.

Following that day’s shooting, the hard-line Yesha Council, which represents the settlers, announced it would unilaterally resume construction. “The Palestinian leadership speaks softly in English while in Arabic it kills,” declared Yesha director Naftali Bennett. Mr Bennett asserted that the illegal settlements serve to protect “the entire West from the onslaught of radical Islam.” The future of the settlements is one of the thorniest issues in the negotiations. Over 300,000 Israeli citizens now live in illegal West Bank settlements, along with nearly 200,000 others in east Jerusalem.

Goa set to welcome Ganesh Chaturthi in a greener way

An Indian pre-primary school boy dressed as Hindu god Lord Krishna (L) stares at a girl adorned as Radha adjusting his crown after the Matka Phod (breaking of the pot) celebrations on the eve of Janamashthami in Ahmedabad on September 1, 2010. Janamashthami, the birth day of Lord Krishna, will be celebrated this year on September 2 in India and abroad. An artist gives finishing touches to a plaster cast idol of the elephant-headed Hindu God of prosperity, Lord Ganesha at a workshop in Pen village in Raigad district of the western state of Maharashtra on August 15, 2010. Thousands of artisans begin making idols of the Lord Ganesha, weeks ahead of the Ganesh festival which starts September 11. There are about 300 karkhanas (workshops) producing over 250,000 idols annually and most of these Ganesha idols are shipped to Mumbai, parts of Maharashtra state and other main metros. Some artisans work full-time but this cottage industry fits in well with the rural economics of India where employment can often be seasonal.

Environmentalists in Goa have began campaigning for an eco-friendly Ganesh festival in the coastal state this year. With Ganeshotsav getting increasingly modern and detrimental to the environment, green minds have started convincing people to celebrate an ‘EcoChaturthi’. The five-day long festival devoted to the elephant-headed deity will be celebrated in almost all the Hindu households and several public places in the state from September 11. “The traditional festival is getting a modern outlook and with that the environment is taking a beating,” environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar said. He said green NGOs in the state have began efforts to give eco-touch to this festival so that the levels of noise, air and water pollution during the celebrations is reduced drastically.

RELATIONSHIP

Sexual Prelude

All for a smooth break-up

When it comes to sexual prelude, men and women don’t always agree. Foreplay is essential if you want the act to be pleasurable for both the partners. It is particularly important for women to have successful foreplay because it takes a woman longer time than a man, to get up to the level of arousal needed to climax. A man can think about sex and be aroused, but for most women, that’s just not enough. Foreplay plays a physical and emotional role, preparing both mind and body for sex. For a woman love is very important and she needs her man to not just show that he really loves her, but also say it. The next most important thing is time. Do not be in a hurry to finish the act. Even undressing should be done at a snail’s pace with many pauses in between for light kisses. A woman responds well to touch and caress. Give her feather light touches, observe her body language and look into her eyes. Women love to feel so let her feel your warm hand all over. Men may prefer to go wild right at the beginning but women like style and sophistication rather than getting wild and raw. Taking showers together, lip locking for extended hours, scented candles, flowers are definite turn ons.

Not all relationships last a lifetime and often, it’s best to end things before it gets ugly. Now that you have decided to break up with your girlfriend/boyfriend, remember that breaking the news is not an easy job.

It’s likely that the other person still has feelings for you, so try and ensure that you end things graciously, so that a once beautiful relationship doesn’t end with an ugly fight.

Don’t break up at a public place

Once you decide to tell your partner that the relationship has run out of steam, do so in utmost privacy. Even though you don’t fancy the person anymore, remember that you were in love

Don’t be too casual

not long ago. Don’t take your soon-to-be ex to a public place to break the news. You wouldn’t want to be a part of an ugly scene and be a spectacle for those at the joint.

Don’t break up while doing a mundane task, like picking up groceries or chomping on a huge burger. Give your relationship some respect.

Don’t break up at your usual hangout

Don’t break-up through an sms

Break-ups can be messy, so don’t opt for a place that you are likely to frequent. In case you don’t part on absolutely amicable terms, at least people who know you won’t be witness to a fight.

Those who can’t express themselves well, find the option of e-mail, very appealing. This is not a bad option considering that it allows you to elaborate on your feelings. Also, it’s perfect

for those who prefer to avoid confrontation. Breaking up over SMS, however, can be highly insensitive.

Go slow and steady

The best way to break up, often turns out to be the slow and steady way. This is where you make your partner realise that things are not working out between you. Give him/her some time to get used to the idea, so that when you go for the big talk, it doesn’t come as a big surprise.

BOLLYWOOD MUSIC Mika Singh creates history in Australia On 15th August Mika Singh created a new record for Indian singers. He became the only Indian singer to sing to 25,000 people at the Sydney Olympic stadium in Australia. The crowds that lined up to buy tickets to hear this concert included Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and local Australians. This was Mika Singh’s solo concert and the crowd had traveled from nearby cities to attend the special Independence Day celebrations with the singer. Mika was overwhelmed with the response he received from the crowd to his hit numbers that included ‘Ae Ganpat’, ‘Dil Mein baji guitar’, ‘Mauja he mauja’, ‘Ibne Batuta’, ‘Tell me Something’ and his latest hit ‘Apni Toh Jaise Taise’. “Its great to receive so much love from so many people and I am very touched to see them in such large numbers to hear me sing. I am so glad that I could make them enjoy their evening and go back home with a smile on their faces! Its not everyday that one gets such amazing crowd to sing to and I hope to repeat this in India soon.” Gushed Mika, from Australia.

an we expect S-E-L to deliver out another prizeworthy asset for listeners as they did in KAL HO NA HO, KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA and MY NAME IS KHAN? Does the grandeur and blue-chip worth of DHARMA PRODUCTIONS in musical successes live up to its expectations in WE ARE FAMILY? We are plugged to find its musical facts, so let’s get started...

“Ankhon Mein Neendein”, a “feeltogether” family song is a conventional S-E-L type of melody that has been gel-factor in fostering tender moments in KJo’s previous flicks. Shreya Ghoshal’s sliding supple “alaap” in semi-classical mode with breezing tones is its highlights that collage well with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s pensive-mood singing. Irshad Kamil’s wordings don’t transpire anything phenomenal and plays to the situation. The comforting and awe-inspiring chorals plus rigorous “alaaps” try to exude “feelgood” ambience but its all together quality singing that takes the major share in the soundtrack. It will be lavish “n” landscaped looking theatrics that will do all the talking as

September 2010 Edition

song qualifies to be another aboveaverage melody from the reliable triumvirate. Bow to Elvis Presley! In an era where sophistication, innovation and improvisation rules, his everlasting rock number “Jailhouse Rock” still founds big inspiration among filmmakers worldwide. It makes no surprises for his fans when loud baritones, yells and screeches of “Dil Khol Ke Let’s Rock” hit the deck. As far as composition and arrangements are concerned, S-E-L religiously stick to Elvis’s super-hit track in this official adaptation and try to embroil it with wishy-washy wordings (“Mujhe nahi pata main kya gaaungi, Ulte seedhay lafzon se banaungi...) with average results. The pep-factor and spunk is relatively lower and doesn’t create sufficient buzz to make any sort of style statement. Disappointing!!! “Noor-E-Khuda” (MY NAME IS KHAN -2009) had Sufi divinity mes-

merized in contemporary rock-musical flavors. What follows next is “Reham-O-Karam”? It sounds like song sequel to “Noor-E-Khuda” and works with similar rhythm-divine tonality that impresses to the hilt. Shankar Mahadevan and Vishal Dadlani’s smoothened up voices sing together in format of prayer, with strong inputs of heavy-duty distorted electric guitar riffs and thumping percussions in its backdrop. S-E-L’s innovation in putting elements of modernity into it works progressively and the modish impact of “church-choir” type of chorals, add to the pathos. Irshad Kamil’s sensitively penned wordings are the finest in album and give it spells of narrative edges. Proposed to be effectual and appealing background score, it works for those compelling moments that are likely to be playing significant in the melodramatic phases. Impressive!!!

T-Series acquires Saif Ali Khan’s next film The renowned music label T-Series has obtained the audio rights of Kunal Kohli directed next movie, which will star Saif Ali Khan. This is the third movie, where Saif and Kunal are working together. Earlier, they worked in the movies Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Hum Tum. Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd is producing the movie. The acquisition is part of a five-film music deal, which was signed between T-Series and Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd early this year. In a statement, Vinod Bhanushali, T-Series president (Marketing Media) was quoted saying that they have association with Ashtavinayak since some earlier films of the production company. He added that they have reached a certain comfort level with each other because of working together for a long time and this is one of the reasons of signing this deal. Some other movies, which come under this deal, are

Priyadarshan’s recent release Khatta Meetha starring Akshay Kumar and other upcoming movies like Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan, Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal 3 and Neeraj Vora’s Run Bhola Run. With yearlong reputation in the industry, T-Series has easily formed a good relation to get the music rights of these films of renowned filmmakers.

Meet Desi e-reader, Wink

21a

How does a LIE DETECTOR (polygraph) work? You hear about lie detectors all the time in police investigations, and sometimes a person applying for a job will have to undergo a polygraph test (for example, certain government jobs with the FBI or CIA require polygraph tests). The goal of a lie detector is to see if the person is telling the truth or lying when answering certain questions. When a person takes a polygraph test, four to six sensors are attached to him. A polygraph is a machine in which the multiple (“poly”) signals from the sensors are recorded on a single strip of moving paper (“graph”). THE SENSORS USUALLY RECORD:  The person’s breathing rate  The person’s pulse

Bangalore-based digital publisher EC Media International has launched its multi-function e-book reader Wink that not only supports 15 languages but will also offer over 200,000 book titles on debut. Wink will offer consumers a one-stop e-store to access e-reading content of choice via www.thewinkstore.com that would enable access not just to ebooks, but also journals, newspapers, magazines and selected articles, EC Media said. Many of the titles have been acquired from international aggregators, giving Indians access to a whole lot of books not available in the country.

 The person’s blood pressure  The person’s perspiration Sometimes a polygraph will also record things like arm and leg movement. When the polygraph test starts, the questioner asks three or four simple questions to establish the norms for the person’s signals. Then the real questions being tested by the polygraph are asked. Throughout questioning, all of the person’s signals are recorded on the moving paper. Both during and after the test, a polygraph examiner can look at the graphs and can see whether the vital signs changed significantly on any of the questions. In general, a significant change (such as a faster heart rate, higher blood pressure, increased perspiration) indicates that the person is lying. When a well-trained examiner uses a polygraph, he or she can detect lying with high accuracy. However, because the examiner’s interpretation is subjective and because different people react differently to lying, a polygraph test is not perfect and can be fooled.

iPhone Dock-in-Style Philips Fidelio DS9000 It’s no secret what product the Philips Fidelio Docking Speaker DS9000/10 is going after. The DS9000 is an oPhone/iPod speaker dock more than just a little influenced by the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin. And while Philips may not have quite the brand cachet of Bowers & Wilkins in the audio world, that doesn’t necessarily preclude the DS9000 from proving itself worthy of your hard-earned monies. In the DS9000’s favour is its price. While its MSRP is the same as the B&W Zeppelin - A$680 - it’s actually available for A$600 on Amazon. Assuming that price holds, it’s a decent chunk of change saved. It’s much easier to see past the different labels on each device and judge them purely on their objective merits - as we should be, really. The aesthetics are most accurately described as divisive. The design isn’t as universally appealing as the blimp-inspired Zeppelin, but it has a certain something about it nonetheless. There’s a tasteful elegance to the carved wooden back, the polished metal crevasse in the centre and the predictably black cloth mesh covering the front surface. The wooden rear is made using a process called ‘veneer lamination’ which to those unfamiliar with such techniques, composes multiple layers of lacquered plywood being formed together to create a naturally stiff structure, reducing internal vibration. The shape is not only visually appealing, but also designed to eliminate internal reflection and standing waves.

Hi Randeep,

Dear Hina

I would like to thank you for providing me such a satisfactory service throughout the property deal. Your regular updates and communication shows your passion towards your work and service towards your customers. I am happy in buying the property through you not because it was a good property to buy, but the way you have researched the market and provided us with the facts and figures about the property. This shows the knowledge you had about the market and you are more than happy to go that extra mile for your customer.

I am so Happy with the work you have done for me, you have been very nice as in person and have a very friendly service and also got things done in time. Dr. Maria Victoria S. Salinas Hi Hina, Thank you very much for your very kind and absolutely outstanding support on the Visa application. Very best regards, thanks again and CHEERS!

Building your first home can be a daunting experience but this is where Mr. Randeep S. Virdi from 1st Property came to my rescue. He was instrumental in finding the perfect block of land for me and negotiating the best deal in my favour. The highlight is the fact that his engagement did not stop at that. He was as passionate about getting our home built as I was. He helped me all the way in understanding the requirements pertaining to building a property and organized for all the services required like town planning, architecture and even finding the best possible builder. I cannot recommend 1st Property enough and I hope your experience with 1st Property is as rewarding as mine. Aman Sahani

Dr Jens Froelich Hi Hina, I recommend 1st Migration as a first port of call when you’re looking for expert migration advice and services. The organizations end to end personalized and professional approach delivered a great outcome for me, and for my parents. I had approached 1st Migration for assistance with filing my Parent’s Visa. ine is actually a best gift for the humankind. It not only increases the charm in the party, social gatherings but also gives several advantages to you in quite a few ways. Wines are far more charming and tasty when served in beautiful glasses. It is a long shaped glass with an electrifying elegance and appearance. These are significantly stunning and striking to give a unique and trendy look to your glass racks. Most of the folks (I am discussing the wine enthusiasts) appreciate Wine Glasses being in their bar racks as they may be a great deal stunning and trendy than the normal wine glasses. In addition, they also put stars in your status symbol. Moreover, why not, wine eyeglasses are probably the most crucial part from the wine serve. You may also create them for your glassware to provide a one of a kind and appealing look to your bar corner. role in imparting a charm and appeal on the house decoration, especially to the bar corner. One of the most important attribute of these charming eyeglasses is the fact that these are created from temper resistant glass (difficult to broke down). They hardly receive any cracks on their surface

as they are designed from materials, which are crack resistant. Referring to their price, they are available in price tag tags that will probably be inexpensive on your pockets. A basic big wine glass will price you only close to 12$ to 15$. The very best component is the fact

that there are really worth of their costs as they are made from large quality glass material and are more trendy and stylish than standard wine eyeglasses. You’ll be able to simply access them from any top-class glassware store or even a kitchen remodeling store.

Moreover, if you are not satisfied with the designs and styles present in the market place then you can go online to browse the latest and trendy models. The all you need is to click on the Add to Cart button and the product will be delivered to your doorstep. So add this beautiful glassware in your wine corner and start receiving appreciations from your visitors.

World’s most expensive hot dog

(Bread Pudding)

INGREDIENTS:      

8 Bread Slices(cut the edges out and cut diagonally) 4 tbsp Ghee 1 litre Milk 1 cup Sugar 1/4 tsp Cardamom Powder 1 tbsp Kismis

PREPARATION:       

September 2010 Edition

Heat the milk and sugar stirring continuously. Put 1 tsp ghee to prevent the milk from flowing over. Reduce the milk to 1/2 qty. cool the milk. Add the kismis and cardamom powder. Fry the bread slices in ghee till golden. Dip in milk for 2 minutes. Remove and put in the milk piesh prepared previously. Serve cool.

Prepare to shell out a cool $ 69 for this hot dog. New York’s popular Serendipity 3 restaurant has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the costliest hot dog – called the Serendipity Foot-Long Haute Dog. So what makes this frankfurter haute? The beef is grilled in white truffle oil, placed in a salted pretzel bread bun toasted with white truffle butter and topped with duck foie gras, black truffles, caramelised Vidalia onions, heirloom tomato ketchup and a dash of Dijon mustard. “It definitely will be the most delicious hot dog ever,” Serendipity 3 publicist Joe Calderone was quoted as saying. “And the most opulent.” For Serendipity 3, this hot dog marks the eatery’s third Guinness World Record, after the world’s largest hot chocolate and the world’s most expensive sundae — the $1,000 Serendipity Golden Opulence Sundae.

A TRAVELLER’S GUIDE TO

Things to Do in and Around Manali

Travelling To and From Manali

Manali attracts visitors with stunning mountain views and opportunities for trekking, rafting, paragliding, mountaineering and mountain biking.

Daily government buses travel from Delhi to Manali via Chandigarh, and travel agents in Delhi’s Pahar Ganj backpacker area arrange private bus services to Manali. There are regular buses from Manali to Kullu for exploring the Kullu Valley and bus connections to the Parvati Valley via Bhuntar. Public and private buses connect Manali to Leh in Ladakh between June and October and take two days to complete the hair-raising journey, with an overnight stop in Keylong or in Sarchu. There are also buses to the Spiti Valley, to Shimla and to Dharamsala. Many visitors rent a motorbike to explore Manali and its surroundings. Manali has several motorbike workshops and other places to buy or rent bikes, but read these tips before renting or

Manali is a good base for exploring the beautiful Kullu and Parvati Valleys and a starting point for travel to the more remote areas in Ladakh, Lahaul and Spiti. The nearby Rohtang La, a 3978 m high mountain pass, is a popular daytrip destination especially amongst Indian visitors.

Finding Accommodation in Manali The modern town centre, New Manali, is ďŹ lled with new hotels, shops, markets and other businesses and services. Domestic tourists tend to stay in the hotels in New Manali, but most backpackers head to Old Manali or nearby Vashist. Both Old Manali and Vashist offer a choice of cheap guesthouses, restaurants that serve Western food, bakeries, Internet cafes, travel agents and other services designed for the international backpacker market, but in a less hectic environment than the busy town centre.

buying a motorbike in India.

The Best Times to Visit Manali The best time to visit Manali is from March to June, when the rest of India suffers from intense summer heat but the mountain climate in Manali, at 2050 m altitude, remains cool and pleasant. The monsoon brings heavy rain in July and August. The summer months from April to June are the busiest times in Manali, and another high season is around September and October after the monsoon. Winter brings snow and skiing opportunities, and extremely cold weather. Some guesthouses in Manali close for the winter season.

Salman Khan break up with Katrina Kaif was just a drama..

S

alman Khan has admitted that he wants his fans to stay in a state of perennial confusion when it comes to his relationship with Katrina Kaif. True to form, the Bollywood superstar has now claimed that his much hyped ‘break- up’ with Katrina was mere drama and that they are still together. “I want everyone to be confused about my private life. That is fun. It’s quite amusing to watch the media create headlines out of my personal life,” said Salman with a sarcastic smile, in town on Sunday to promote his upcoming film Dabangg . Confirming, Katrina and he were still very much together and happy, Salman added: “ No one wanted to listen to my full story when I said that Katrina and I had

split. I was merely being pushed into saying something to that effect because the media kept asking me about my status with Katrina. What I actually said was: If a split between Katrina and me makes you happy, then we have split.” At Sunday’s media meet, Salman continued goading journalists, saying that they should never stop asking him about Katrina. “ I have had a number of affairs. But I have started a new one only after ending the last one. If and when I feel the need to settle down, I won’t ask for anyone’s advice. I shall do my own thing,” he said. So, is he seriously planning to marry Katrina? “ Till the time we don’t get officially married, everyone stays single technically. I can’t understand why everyone

is so interested in knowing when we are getting married. Do people keep track of their own family, friends and neighbors when it comes to such things?” Of course, there is a popular notion that reports of a split crop up every time Salman or Katrina have a release coming up. It happened last year, when Katrina’s Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani was about to release, and again when Rajneeti opened this year. In both films, her co- star was Ranbir Kapoor and rumours did the rounds that Katrina was getting cosy with Ranbir. Again, when Salman’s Veer opened earlier this year, reports of his closeness to the film’s debutant heroine, Katrina- look- alike Zarine Khan, did the rounds.

Esha files a case against Ram Gopal Varma

H

ema Malini’s daughter Esha Deol has shown her anger against filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, who has been alleged to have not paid her dues for the movie Darling. She has even filed a complaint against RGV for the same. A friend of Esha was quoted saying that the actress waited for a long time for Ram Gopal Varma to clear the dues but he did not respond even after repeated reminders. One year back, Esha also filed a complaint in the Cine and TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) and the filmmaker even did not reply to the letters from the association. Varma is said to have not paid an amount of about Rs 13 lakh. After some time, the case was

taken to the Federation of Western Indian Cine Employees (FWICE), which has termed the case as a ‘Non Cooperation Matter’. The friend added that RGV should pay Esha’s dues even if the movie failed at the box office. How long will she wait, added the friend. On the other hand, Varma said that it is a very old issue, which has been solved as per his knowledge. On this, Esha’s friend said that it’s totally rubbish because the actress is still trying to sort out the problem and it fighting against RGV in CINTAA. Bhushan Kumar, the producer of Darling said that he had paid a huge amount to RGV for the concerned movie and the actors were supposed to be paid from that and they have no contract with Esha.

bikini waxing MMS scandal is a dud

The Fitness Diva

B

ollywood diva Shilpa Shetty (CEO - IOSIS Medispa) launched the FICCI Wellness Knowledge paper called “Transforming Lifestyles” at FICC Wellness 2010 seminar at Taj President. Shilpa said, “ My foray into the Wellness Industry started with the Yoga DVD I launched a few years back. However, I have always been passionate about beauty and wellness since my childhood and IOSIS medispa is an extension of that. In fact, as a child one of my ambitions used to be to own a beauty parlour when I grow up. I think I did slightly better than that with my venture into the wellness industry. For me wellnesss is a pre-requisite, its not a luxury. India is coming into its own globally. It has a rich heritage of over 4,000 years in wellness with Ayurveda, Yoga being part of our culture - in fact yoga is our best export. This is being recognised worldwide & I was surprised to see ayurveda massages and ‘champi’ being offered in spas in Bangkok and Malaysia.

We have reason to believe that searching for the ‘Soha Ali Khan waxing MMS scandal’ might be an exercise in futility.

O

ver the weekend, Bollywood websites and blogs went into a tizzy with reports of a “Soha Ali Khan waxing MMS scandal” video. After trawling through several dead links and investigating the matter in detail, we can safely assume that it’s a campaign by vested interests with an explicit purpose: to malign the actress. Apparently, Saif’s little sis underwent a bikini wax session at a beauty salon recently. Unknown to her, there were cameras strategically placed in the room that recorded her in various states of undress and in some scenes, from close quarters, says the report.

She didn’t know...

Mention is made that she is completely at ease, implying that all this was done without her knowledge and that the going price of the clips are anywhere between $20 to $30. It appears that a “leading” website (unnamed in every website and online report) shot this video in association with the salon. Supposedly, the video shows her getting undressed and wearing a towel. Over time, her body is revealed. The salon attendant is then seen waxing her body including the bikini area. The video has been made into two episodes with “before” and “after waxing” shots. Not to be simply content with that, the conversation (we assume doctored) borders on the “kinky”. It’s a troubling trend that actresses are frequently becoming victims to the online demand for show-and-tell videos. Websites in order to attract hits, go to weird lengths to advertise MMS videos even as innocent actresses pay the price. With most people choosing to believe that these “skin flicks” are “real”, it seems like a battle they’re losing. Soha remained unavailable for comment.

His sole attachment is his mother. However after his mother’s demise and an unsuccessful attempt to mend wounds, Chulbul snaps all ties with his stepfather and half brother. Rajo (Sonakshi Sinha) with her unique perspective of life enters his world and turns upside down. Chulbul starts to see life more positively and also gets sensitized to the value of a family. But his detractors especially the dubious Cheddi Singh (Sonu Sood) have their own vested interests. And emerge as spokes in the wheel, pulling one brother against the other. Makhanchan ends up carrying out acts oblivious to the consequences. When he realizes he has been used, he turns to Chulbul. Will Chulbul take his extended hand? Will the brothers be able to threat their detractors? Well this time, Chulbul’s fearlessness channelizes itself positively and reunite him with his family. Synopsis:

It was a moment which the heavens had preordained. When Rajiv Behl, a well-to-do drifter with no particular destination, first laid his eyes on the beautiful but melancholic face of Nargis in the hush of the pre-dawn light, on the deserted streets of Jordan, he knew that she was the one that the Gods had created just for him. But strange are the ways of the world. As Rajiv pursues Nargis he soon finds out to his utter shock that she comes from a lineage of tawaaifs from Pakistan’s Heera Mandi and she is about to be sold to the highest bidder. His quest for love hurls him into the famous Red Light district of Shahi Mohalla in Lahore, a region where supposedly ‘fallen’ women and the men who benefit financially from them, rub shoulders with ordinary folk. Here, he has to lock horns with the woman who controls the Red Light district, the foul mouthed Zohra Bai, who believes that the only creed of a tawaaif is to be a pleasure peddler. To leave Shahi Mohalla in order to lead a normal life is forbidden. In his attempt to save his love from her terrible fate, Rajiv embarks on a journey to outbid those who want to buy her, and in the

process, is compelled to re-connect with his true identity. This opens a Pandora’s box, which not only shocks his beloved Nargis but makes him a moving target all over again. For Rajiv is actually Rocky, a pop star of Indian origin from UK, who has incurred the wrath of Baabar, the dreaded international terrorist. Rocky has not only subverted one of his major terrorist plans two years ago, he has also testified against him in a court of law. Rocky is therefore under a witness protection programme and his life is now in serious danger.... When Avtar Singh, the head of the Counter-Terrorist Unit in the UK reprimands Rocky for being reckless, and tells him that the only way he can protect his loved one is to stay away from her, Rocky decides to stop being the hunted... and turns into the hunter. He vows to find Baabar and kill him. Is the union of Rocky and Nargis really pre-ordained by the Gods or is it merely the desire of a young man? Does the rockstar overcome the treachery of a Trans-national terrorist and if yes, how? Does Rocky succeed in finding emancipation for Nargis? Come and find out in this musical tale of love and passion... KAJRAARE.

Marathi cinema carving a space for itself

W

hile there may be an undercurrent of resentment against arm twisting tactics adopted by the workers of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena to force cinema hall and multiplex owners to show Marathi films as well, it seems that the Marathi film makers have taken it upon themselves to come out with some amazing films which would force the hall owners to display them, notwithstanding the forced attempt by MNS. It all started with HAPUS, which underlined the importance of adaption of new techniques by the

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray

Maybe, what is required to give a new lease of life to Marathi cinema is infusion of capital in a big way, i.e. increasing the budget to increase the spectacle.

farmers to augment their incomes and it has become a super hit film. How many of the fans of cinema are aware about the fact the SHYAMCHI AAYEE won the first Swarnkamal in 1954 and has a fan following on Facebook of more than 2.5 lakh fans that would be envy for any filmmaker. If one were to discern the real fault line that gave a new lease of life to Marathi cinema, it was SHWAS around six years ago, and it went on to compete at the Oscars as well. It was followed by MEE SHIVAJI RAO BOLTO HAI, NATRANG, LALBAUG TO PAREL etc. that have given a shot in the arm to business of film making in Marathi. So in a way the cinema is evolving in Marathi. It is however seriously impaired by known faces which brings audiences in cinema halls, as it is in other regional centres like Tamil, Telugu or Kannada where there are stars in their own rights who command huge fan following. Such kind of star power is not present in the cinema of Marathi and it becomes a stumbling block for the cinema hall owners and distributors

to market the film and bring in the audience. Being in the vicinity of Hindi cinema, the Marathi actor who has made his mark aspires to switch over to Hindi films. However, being a competitive arena, the expected success is not in the same quantum, but as the money is good in Hindi cinema, the struggle to gain foothold continues. Maybe, what is required to give a new lease of life to Marathi cinema is infusion of capital in a big way, i.e. increasing the budget to increase the spectacle. Besides,

there also needs to be a change in attitude of the average Marathi cinegoer which may encourage the film makers to experiment with bold themes. The content still operates within a defined parameter, rarely trying to experiment, but when it does it gets international acclaim, as JHING CHAK JHING got. It was appreciated even by Prince Charles and Michelle Obama. So the canvas has been spread out, need is for search of new pencils and new colors, and Marathi cinema could indeed evolve in its own.

outh superstar Rajinikant reportedly charged a whopping 45 crore for the sci-fi thriller Robot. The actor plays a scientist who makes a robot who is his own replica. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan falls in love with the robot. Before the film went on floors, director Shankar and Rajinikant spent two weeks in Los Angeles to prepare the mould for the robot’s body with the latest technology. “The first step was scanning Rajinikant’s entire body to create a prototype. Using this prototype, Hollywood technicians created a robot that everyone said was literally like his double,” says a source from the production house. Shankar collaborated with Hollywood’s Stan Winston for visual effects and make-up. Almost 40 percent of the 150-crore budget was spent on special effects and animatronics. Hollywood experts were called in and the technology used in films like Avatar and The Curious Case of Benajamin Button was also employed in Robot.

I can’t afford Akshay for Hera Pheri 3

Sanjay Dutt ke liye! Mallika signs Dhamaal sequel just so she could be cast opposite Sanju Baba

Producer Feroz Nadiadwala waited four years for Akshay Kumar to return to the third film in the Hera Pheri series before they parted ways because of the price factor. With Akshay gone, Feroz had to change the entire cast of Hera Pheri. Now Abhishek plays Akshay Kumar’s role. Nana Patekar has stepped into Paresh Rawal’s role, And Sanjay Dutt plays Suniel Shetty’s part. This, according to Nadiadwala, would remain the lineup of actors for the Hera Pheri films to come. The parting with Akshay over Hera Pheri has left Feroz distressed. “I first started discussing the third Hera Pheri movie with Akshay in 2006. I never wanted to make it without him. It’s sad that we couldn’t come to an agreement. Akshay is like a brother. But I can’t afford him. I hope we work together again very soon.” Feroz is delighted with the script that Anees Bazmi has come up with the new Hera Pheri film. “It’s going going to be one of the funniest comedies in living memory, ” promises Feroz.

Nicolas Cage in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s next

Shah Rukh Khan (L) and wife Gauri, brand ambassadors for D’Decor, pose during an event in Mumbai on August 26, 2010.

It’s learnt that Vidhu Vinod Chopra has finalised Nicolas Cage for his film Broken Horses. The movie will go on the floors early next year. “Vidhu is currently in Los Angeles, working on for Broken Horses. Even in Mumbai, he was in touch with his Hollywood contacts for the cast and crew. Cage has been confirmed for one of the leading roles just a few days ago,” says our source. Reportedly, Mickey Rourke has also been approached for an important role in the gangster film that Chopra is producing in association with Reliance Big Pictures. Apparently, Broken Horses is inspired by the filmmaker’s Parinda, starring Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit.

Ra. One set for a June 2011 release

T

he super-hero action flick Ra.One starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor will be releasing on June 13 next year. The film is scheduled to release after the IPL cricket matches. SRK will play a super-hero who is made of solid electricity, and his name is G.One. He comes to the real world from a virtual one to fight Ra.One, the evil force. He is the Good One, that’s why for short, his name is G.One, which also stands for ‘Life’ in Hindi,” SRK told HT Cafe. The villain Ra.One, is played by actor Arjun Rampal, who last worked with SRK in Don. Rampal has worked on his performance and look for the film. He will be seen sporting a whole new look for the film.

Kareena Kapoor plays the female lead and has been cast opposite SRK in the film. SRK promises a lot to look forward to, including world-class technology. “I can vouch for the fact that it’s never been used in Indian cinema before,” Khan asserts, adding, “Whether it’s the action or the visual effects, cinematography or the background work, musically and visually, it’s the first time you’ll see something like this in our cinema,” the actor said. Rampal too, feels the film is a path-breaking sci-fi thriller that will really appeal to kids. The film has been directed by Anubhav Sinha and has partially been shot in India and partly in London.

SRK declines to play Lalit Modi Actor Shah Rukh has refused to play the role of IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi despite being asked by Modi himself. The role is for the film Commissioner based on Modi’s life seen from the perspective of a journalist, reported the Mumbai Mirror. While the exact reason has not been stated, the actor possibly rejected the role since he himself is so closely related with the league. It’s also possible that he refused to get involved with the IPL in the light of all the recent controversy around the League and its commissioner. “When the film was announced, everything was very rosy on the IPL front. But after the recent controversy on Lalit Modi, it has become a very sensitive topic,” a source told the tabloid. Following this refusal, the company has reportedly approached Ajay Devgn and Irrfan Khan for the role.

A

ctress Kareena Kapoor is all praise for her beau Saif Ali Khan, with whom she is shooting for director Sriram Raghavan’s “Agent Vinod”, and says she is lucky to have him in her life. “Very few people get love in life and such a supportive partner. Of course, I am very lucky that I have got a partner like Saif. He is a very unique man. His thoughts are much different from others and he always encourages me to work, “ Kareena told in an interview. She maintains that Saif is like a Hollywood actor, who is ignorant about what’s happening around and enjoys his own world. “Saif is mostly ignorant about what films are in the making or if I have signed any until I tell him about my upcoming projects. He is like a Hollywood actor who stays mostly in his own world. He wants to do certain films and produce movies like Hollywood star, “ said the actress who teamed up with him in “Tashan”.

It’s the same very Mandira Bedi, who has now been signed up as the brand ambassador of Bodycare range of products. Sources close to Mandira said that “Mandira has been offered the role of being their brand ambassador, because she totally reflects a modern day woman, who also is a very responsible individual.” The source also added that the said brand, which has a tagline ‘Comfort Forever’, offers a range of women products including bras, panties, tummy tucker panty, maternity range and sports range. Repeated attempts to establish contact with Mandira Bedi proved futile.

Rakhi speaks about her insaaf on Imagine Master Chef to hit small screen in October Star Plus’ well sought after and highly anticipated show called ‘Master Chef’ is supposed to launch in the month of October. The show’s auditions have already started and the channel is all ready to launch the show at a particular prime time. Rajiv Laxman of MTV Roadies fame is the primary creative head behind the show. According to a reliable source, who is a part of the show, says that it’s supposed to start in October. Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has been energetically involved in the making of the show. The first dish that the contestants will be asked to make is the ‘Khiladi Sizzler’ keeping in mind, the true ‘Khiladi’ from Bollywood, Akshay Kumar. Here’s hoping that this version of the show, captures the culinary imaginations of the masses & becomes a hit!

You can hate her, you can love her, but you cannot ignore her, is the saying which is precisely meant for Rakhi Sawant. This girl sets the TRP high, of every channel that she appears on. This item girl is all set to entertain her audience once again. Her new show named ‘Rakhi Ka Insaaf… Dil se’ will be launched within few months. Talking about the show, she spoke out her heart out, totally living up to the show’s tittle. The kind of personality you have, strong, bold and independent, why did you select a show with such a serious content? People assume that I am very funny, well I am not like that. One cannot show his pain in public. Since my childhood I have seen many sins happening in front of me, I have tolerated many things in my life, which has made me so strong that today I can fight any thing that comes my way. The pattern of the show, will be how all the cases (social problems) are solved in my style, that is Rakhi Sawant style. I am not any degree holder or any white collar guy with stars on my shoulders, but I am the one who has gone through these circumstances and so, I think I can do justice with out being bias. What kind of cases you will be dealing with, in the show? I will deal with all kind of social cases like eve teasing, casting couch, extra marital affairs, child abuse and many more. I am not going to give any verdict on legal bases, but I will be dealing with the victims on an emotional level. There are many cases I can’t even recall now. But the most interesting one which I remember is, about this wife, who physically abused her

husband and harasses him badly. I won’t be dealing with any dangerous cases, which could result in police case and court matters. What kind of costume you would be seen wearing, in the show? As I have not started shooting for the show, I really don’t know what kind of attire I will be wearing but there won’t be much of a change in my style. I will be either wearing my hot dresses or sarees. It all depends on the nature of the case. I will be personally researching on the cases, and decide my costume according. Don’t you think people will get bored? I am sure they will not, it will be one hour of full entertainment; after all it’s my show. And how can people expect no entertainment from my show. My audience will definitely enjoy this with out a doubt and start believing in me. Would you like to say few words for your audience? Dear Audiences I know, what you think about me? But I am what I am and I am really proud to be like that and I won’t change at any point of time. We wish you loads of luck Rakhi!!!

Threading, Waxing, Bleach, Facials, Hair Cuts, Hair colour/Foils, Hair Treatment Filmmaker Karan Johar has come out in support of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who was rumored to have banned her husband Abhishek Bachchan from working with Katrina Kaif in ‘Dostana 2’. However, KJo has cleared the air saying that Ash has never put such ban and such claims are totally baseless and ridiculous. Johar said that the movie will start rolling next year. Karan took the help of micro blogging site Twitter to make things clear. On his page Karan tweeted that ‘Dostana 2’ will start shooting early next year with the lead stars Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Katrina Kaif. He added that it is totally unnecessary to bring Aishwarya into this. Tarun Mansukhani will be directing ‘Dostana 2’, which is a sequel to the 2008 blockbuster movie ‘Dostana’ starring Priyanka Chopra along with John and Abhishek. The things started taking wrong turn when Katrina walked out of Abhishek Bachchan starrer ‘The Italian Job’ because of date problems. This reportedly angered Ash so much that she asked her hubby to move out of ‘Dostana 2’ as Katrina is starring opposite him. However, all these rumors have been stopped by KJo now. Who will want to dig out truth if ‘Dostana 2’ actually starts rolling with its announced star cast!

I did 26 lingerie changes Hollywood beauty Jennifer Love Hewitt filmed love scenes with 26 different men over a period of two days for her role as a prostitute. The actress who plays a housewife-turned-call girl in the TV movie ‘The Client List’, said that the filming left her exhausted, reported Sun online. “We shot all those scenes in two days and I did 26 lingerie changes and 26 clients in those two days. I was truly a working girl making this movie,” she said. The 30-year-old beauty said that she found the experience hilarious and was always laughing in between takes. “I would be in a room with one guy then out again and back in with a different guy and a lingerie change. I was cracking up a lot of the time and so were the crew because it was so odd,” said the ‘Ghost Whisperer’ star. The actress had raised eyebrows when she had said in a recent interview that she understands why women take to prostitution, calling it a “recession proof” job. “Given where we are economically, it’s an interesting story. This is the most recessionproof business there is! Samantha has no choice at the end of the day but to give everything that she can in order to take care of her family,” she had said.

Clooney’s ‘American’ powers to top of box office “The American,” the spy thriller starring George Clooney, topped the North American box office this weekend beating gory action film “Machete,” according to final holiday break figures. “The American” earned 16.7 million dollars in US and Canadian theaters over the three-day Labor Day weekend, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations. “Machete,” mixing violence with a campy tribute to 1970s exploitation movies from directors Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis, came in second with an estimated 14.1 million dollars over the FridayMonday period. Last week’s winner, “Takers,” starring Hayden Christensen, Idris Elba and singers Chris Brown and T.I., earned 13.5 million dollars and fell to third place in its second week of release. Fourth place went to the

gruesome documentary-style horror movie “The Last Exorcism,” which fell back from its runner-up spot last weekend, taking 8.8 million dollars. The movie, directed by Daniel Stamm and co-produced by Eli Roth, a director known for his bloody thrillers, follows a disillusioned minister supposedly filming his last exorcism for a documentary. At number five was new release “Going the Distance,” a romantic comedy starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long about a couple living on opposite US coasts who try to make their relationship work. It earned 8.5 million dollars in its opening weekend. In sixth place was “The Expendables,” Sylvester Stallone’s film about a group of weathered mercenaries out to topple a South American dictator, which earned 8.3 million dollars in its fourth week in theaters.

Kourtney & Kim Kardashian Consider NYC Dash Could Dash, the Kardashians’ boutique, be Big Apple bound? Sisters Kourtney, Kim and Khloé have already opened a Miami outpost, and now they may have their sights set on NYC. Kourt, Kim and Scott Disick were spotted scouting possible locales for the store. “Since we are in NY for fashion week launching our K-DASH line for QVC, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to check out some retail locations,” Kourtney wrote on her blog. No word on whether they found the perfect place, but there’s obviously no end in sight for Kardashian empire.

ICC charges, suspends three tainted Pak players

I

nternational Cricket Council tonight charged three tainted Pakistan players under its anti-corruption code in the wake of the match-fixing scandal that has stunned cricket world. A statement issued by ICC confirmed that Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir have been charged with “various offences under the ICC Anti-Corruption Code for Players and Player Support Personnel relating to alleged irregular behaviour during, and in relation to, the fourth Test between England and Pakistan at Lord’s last month”, the Cricinfo reported. It said the trio have been officially notified of the offences they are alleged to have committed and have been provisionally suspended pending a decision on those charges. In accordance with the provisions of the code, this means they are immediately barred from participating in all cricket and related activities until the case has been concluded. “The players have a right to contest this provisional suspension and a further opportunity to defend these charges at a full hearing before an independent Anti-Corruption Tribunal in accordance with Article 5 of the code. The players have 14 days from their receipt of the charge sheet to indicate their desire for a hearing,” the statement said. “We will not tolerate corruption in cricket,” ICC’s Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said, adding that “we must be decisive with such matters and if proven, these offences carry serious penalties up to a life ban.” “The ICC will do everything possible to keep such conduct out of the game and we will stop at nothing to protect the sport’s integrity. While we believe the problem is not widespread, we must always be vigilant. “It is important, however, that we do not pre-judge the guilt of these three players. That is for the independent tribunal alone to decide,” he said. The alleged offences against Pakistani players, if proved, would involve the imposition of a ban on them. There is also a possibility, at the discretion of the independent tribunal, that a fine would be imposed in addition to a ban.

Pakistan’s High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hasan, center, talks to the media outside the Pakistan High Commission in London, Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, where he interviewed Oakistani international cricker players Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Amir and captain Salman Butt, in connection with allegations of a plot to bowl no-balls to order during the fourth Test Match defeat to England at Lord’s.

Pakistan players claim innocence in fixing probe The players have been provisionally barred from all cricket. ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat says “we will not tolerate corruption in cricket.” The players say they are innocent but will step down for the rest of the tour. They have 14 days to decide if they want a hearing.

Ban ‘fixers’ for life “If it is true and they have been found (guilty of) match-fi xing and throwing games and spot betting with the no-balls and stuff, if that’s the case they should be thrown out,” Warne was quoted as saying in media reports here.

“It’s as simple as that. I don’t think there should be any other way to do it. If it’s fi xed by players, they should be banned for life. Anyone who’s involved should be thrown out,” he said.

‘I was not approached by any bookie’ “May be they (the bookies) judge players by their characters before making the move. I can never in my life believe that this may happen. The captain and his boys have a role to play, they must act responsibly,” Ganguly said.

S

ourav Ganguly on Thursday said he had never been approached by any bookie during his stint as Indian captain, even as the world cricket is rocked by ‘spot-fixing’ involving Pakistani cricketers. “Three former India captains -- Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble -- too were never approached and such a situation was beyond their imagination,” Ganguly told a TV channel. Urging the cricketers to be responsible, Ganguly said the International Cricket Council (ICC) was not a policing body and could not have a constant watch on the players. “ICC is not a police station, it has some set of laws. If those are violated, they will take action. Nothing is foolproof,” the 38-year-old said. Referring to the ‘spot-fixing’ scam, Ganguly said “In our playing days, we could hardly believe such a thing. During my captaincy, betting issue used to figure in the discussions with Tendulkar, Dravid, Kumble and me. But nobody could dare approach us. “May be they (the bookies) judge players by their

characters before making the move. I can never in my life believe that this may happen. The captain and his boys have a role to play, they must act responsibly,” Ganguly said. He further said those found guilty in the spot-fixing’ scandal should be “heavily punished”. Without naming the accused -- Pakistan Test skipper Salman Butt and pacer duo of Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer -- the left-hander said,” we should wait for the outcome.” “The guilty should be heavily punished. These are all allegations, there is no proof yet. We should not make comments,” he said. “Not just Pakistan is involved. I hear players from Australia and Bangladesh have been approached. It boils down to the players, it’s their as well as captain’s responsibility. They are playing as an individual, they should take responsibility,” Ganguly said. Pakistan’s Test skipper Butt and pacers Asif and Aamer are facing a Scotland Yard investigation over their alleged involvement in a betting scam “exposed” by a British tabloid’s sting operation.

Saina slips to 3rd place in world ranking NEW DELHI: Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal slipped one place from her career-best position of world number two to the third place in the latest international rankings release on Thursday. The 20-year-old Saina had made a meteoric rise following her back-toback title triumphs at the India Open Grand Prix, Singapore Open Super Series and Indonesian Open Super Series to reach the world number two spot. But a quarterfinal finish at the recently-concluded World badminton Championship in Paris left her one place down the rung at the third position. Saina has 64791.2637 points, while Xin Wang of China rose to the second spot after finishing second in

the World Championship in women’s singles. Compatriot Yihan Wang is still the number one in the ranking. In March, Saina had attained the fifth position after becoming the first Indian woman to reach the semifinals of the prestigious All England Super Series Championships. However, she dropped to the sixth position in the subsequent weeks. Saina’s next engagement will be the all-important Commonwealth Games in Delhi from October 3 to 14, before playing the Asian Games in November. In the men’s ranking, the Indian trio of Chetan Anand, P Kashyap and Arvind Bhatt were at 17th, 29th and 31th spot respectively, while mixed doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and V Diju were at the 13th place.

‘No need to worry about CWG, delays are a part of Indian preparations’ MELBOURNE: The world should not be worried about Indian organisers’ race against time to complete venues for the Commonwealth Games as delays are part of Indian way of preparations, Australia’s Commonwealth Games chef de mission Steve Moneghetti said today. The overlays work is yet to complete at many venues as heavy monsoon rains played havoc with the work, pushing back the deadlines

further. But Moneghetti was full of optimism, saying there will be a unique spin to it and everything will be in order soon. “People ask me ‘oh, they’re way behind’ -- that’s the Indian way. Probably from a western culture they might be, but in India that is way they do things. “They’re actually going fine from an Indian perspective, it’s just internationally that we’re all worried. It will have a quite unique spin on it and that will make it a really cultural experience,” Moneghetti said.

Moneghetti, a former Commonwealth Games champion marathon runner, urged the Australia CWG Association to embrace the multi-sports event scheduled for October 3-14. “I think it’s brave of the Commonwealth Games -- you have got to go. It’s the Commonwealth Games, it’s not four nations. There are 71 countries represented in the Commonwealth and we need to embrace that,” he said. Moneghetti said athletes should

travel to India without any fear and enjoy there. “For most countries that go, it’s not about winning medals, it’s about being a welcome part of the Commonwealth and enjoying that cultural experience. “So to have them in India, it’s just fantastic. Rather than close in or be scared and that ‘we’re losing the Commonwealth brand,’ we are actually taking it out and exposing it to another part of the world, which is a fantastic thing,”

India suffer 2nd defeat in women’s hockey World Cup ROSARIO (Argentina): Rani Rampal’s double strike went in vain as India suffered their second consecutive defeat in the women’s hockey World Cup, losing 3-6 to Australia in a Pool A match. For the Hockeyroos, it was their second successive win of the tournament and they are well on course for semi-finals of the quadrennial event. Ashleigh Nelson (34th minute, 58th) scored two goals for Australia late last night while Madonna Blyth (17th), Casey Eastham (52nd), Nicole Arrold (55th) and Shelly Liddelow (64th) found the net once each. For India, Rampal continued her impressive showing upfront, scoring in the 17th and 62nd minute while Ritu Rani (42nd) managed the other goal. The Surinder Kaur-led India are still without points in the tournament after suffering two defeats out of as many matches and will take on Germany in their next pool match tomorrow, while the Australians will be up against title holders the Netherlands. Unlike their tournament opener which they lost 1-7 against defending champions Netherlands, India came out more organised against the Hockeyroos. However, extreme cold conditions had a telling effect on the game in the initial stages as both the teams looked scrappy and were guilty of giving away possession easily.

LOW BACK ACHE AYURVEDIC TREATMENT

(KATI SHOOLA)

>> Dr. C.R.S. Kumar

B

ack pain is probably the most common ailment on the planet, with as many as 4 out of 5 adults experiencing it in varying degrees in their lifetime. Moreover, the incidence rate is higher among the women. It is a chronic condition characterized by a dull persistent pain or sharp pain in the lower back. In most of the cases the pain is associated with the burning, stiffness, numbness or tingling sensation with the pain shooting down buttocks and the legs. Severe pain in the low back is often debilitating to the clients. According to Ayurveda the low back ache is a result of vitiation of one of the three principle humors (Tri dhoshas) and it is related to Katishoola or Kati graham or Prishta shoola, which is mainly due to aggravation of Vata dosha. Backache can be caused by an accident or an injury to the spine, degenerative, metabolic or congenital disease, or it may be the result of developmental problems or a tumor. Among these causes mainly back pain is caused due to poor posture habit. Diseases such as osteoporosis, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, muscle strain, ruptured

intervertebral disc, (Herniated disc) arthritis and spondylolisthesis (disc slip) are the major causative factors for the back ache. Other factors such as overweight, wearing high heeled shoes and lifting heavy weights are also responsible for backache.

AYURVEDIC APPROACH

It is better to detect lower back pain in the early stages to prevent further progression with the help of Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurvedic treatment is done according to individual body constitution and accordingly following life style modifications will help to get better relief from lower back pain. Treatment in Ayurveda is to bring the vitiated vata dosha back to the state of equilibrium to achieve optimal health benefits. The Ayurvedic treatment involves the internal herbal medicines as well as external treatments such as Kati vasti and dietary treatment. Kati vasti is a special technique aimed at providing relief to the lowermiddle- upper back problems. By using warm medicated oils or herbal decoctions poured in dough made with black gram is placed on the back around the painful area

gives better relief for the low back pain. Since backache is a condition caused due to vata vitiation, any food that can aggravate the vata further must not be taken. Sour and fried foods must be totally avoided. Rice must be reduced in the daily food, food grains such as wheat, millet and sorghum are to be advised. Other preventive methods such as sleeping on ground surface with back straight, preferably on hard surface of the mattress. Using ergonomic chairs in your workplace or see that the chair makes contact with the spine fully when you sit on it. Do regular physical exercise; especially perform gliding motions while doing exercise. Regular yoga practice is highly essential in the prevention of low back ache. Particularly yogasanas such as Bhujangasana, Hal asana, and Shalabhasana are highly beneficial in the prevention of low back ache. Are you getting enough sleep? S

ix, seven or eight - so how many hours of sleep are enough for you? It’s probably best to aim for seven hours of quality shut-eye every night, says a new study led by an Indian-origin researcher. Anoop Shankar and his team at West Virginia University has found that those who sleep more or less than seven hours a day are at a raised risk of developing coronary heart disease, the Sleep journal reported. They have based their findings

BEER-LOVING LADIES...

BEWARE! A new study has found that women who drink two or more beers weekly had a 72 percent greater chance of psoriasis than those that did not drink any alcohol. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “psoriasis is a disease which produces sores and scaling of the skin. It affects 2 to 3 per cent of the population and is probably an autoimmune disease; a disease where your immune system attacks your own cells.” Abrar A. Qureshi, MD, MPH, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston and a team of colleagues noted, “The association between alcohol consumption and increased risk of psoriasis onset and psoriasis worsening has long been suspected. For example, individuals with psoriasis drink more alcohol than individuals without psoriasis, and alcohol intake may exacerbate psoriasis severity.”

on an analysis of data gathered in a national US study in 2005 on 30,000 adults. The study found that the subjects who said they slept nine hours or longer a day were one-and-a-half times more likely than seven-hour sleepers to develop heart disease. And, adults under 60 who slept five hours or fewer a night raised their risk of developing cardiovascular disease more than threefold compared to people who sleep seven hours, the study

Because of your busy schedule, sometimes you might not think twice if you feel tired during the day. But what if you feel fatigued because you have a sleep disorder? Casey Fowler of Sleep Medicine Services of Western Mass helps determine the difference between one fitful night of sleep and a larger problem.

According to the researchers, short sleep duration is associated with angina, while both sleeping too little and too much are linked to heart attack and stroke. The results remained the same after considering age, sex,

race, whether the person smoked or drank, whether they were fat or slim, and whether they’re active or couch potato. However, the researchers were unable to find out the exact reason between how long one sleeps and heart

disease. But they pointed out sleep duration affects endocrine and metabolic functions and sleep deprivation lead to impaired glucose tolerance, reduced insulin sensitivity and elevated blood pressure, all of which raise risk of hardening arteries. Shankar said that doctors should screen for changes in sleep duration when assessing patients’ risk for heart disease and that public health initiatives consider including a focus on improving sleep quality and quantity.

Stress can reduce chances of pregnancy A new study has revealed that high stress levels can reduce a woman’s chances of getting pregnant. Researchers at Oxford University and the US National Institutes of Health found that blood levels of a marker for a stress hormone called alpha-amylase were consistently higher in women who were struggling to conceive. Women with high levels of alpha-amylase had a 12 percent lower chance of becoming pregnant. “This is the first study to find that a biological measure of stress is associated with a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant that month,” dailymail. co.uk quoted Cecilia Pyper, from the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit at Oxford University, as saying. “We found that those women with high levels of a marker for stress were less likely to succeed in conceiving. The findings support the idea that couples should aim to stay as relaxed as they can about trying for a baby,” Pyper added. “In some people’s cases, it might be relevant to look at relaxation techniques, counselling and even approaches like yoga and meditation. Many couples are very keen to know what they should do to improve their chances of conceiving and having a healthy baby, and this will help us provide the best advice.”

POOR APPETITE IN CHILDREN Homeopathic Help >> Raj Kothuru

O

ne of the worries of parents throughout the world in general is “poor appetite” among their children. It puts a lot of pressure on parents, as they are concerned about the proper growth and well being of the child. Children often need to be begged or bribed to eat their food. Some children go through a stage of disinterest in food and eating. Children, especially in the younger age group never seem to eat. Children turn to become very picky eaters and have poor appetites. We have already discussed Anorexia nervosa and Bulimia, which are also eating disorders among slightly older children in our previous articles. In this article, we focus on a much younger group of children aged between 3 and 8 where no trauma or psychological disorder is the underlying cause of the behaviour. The parent is simply dealing with a young child, who due to various normal reasons shows a much reduced interest in food. Normally, a child will eat when it is hungry. When the child refuses to eat or generally has a poor appetite, the reasons behind that have to be identified and addressed correctly. Sometimes, the reasons could be

very simple as a phase the child is going through or the child is simply not hungry at that time or has had too much of something else to eat, intestinal worms, simple behaviour patterns somehow framed (which can be easily changed with some effort). What is needed is a little encouragement for the child to eat well and a little monitoring over its eating pattern. In cases like this, the child might neglect food for a short period of time however, will once again start eating normally by itself in a matter of time. Sometimes, there could be much serious reasons like underlying disease, medications, emotional issues etc which pose a real risk to the health of the child. TYPES OF POOR APPETITE: 1) Eating restricted range of foods, extreme faddiness where the child eats only a limited range of foods and does not try new foods. These children are not preoccupied with their weight or body shape. 2) Restricted eating where the child eats a range of foods but has very little appetite and eats very little. The child is not preoccupied with its weight, does not want to lose weight and seems perfectly happy. This condition is more common in the pre-school years and is relatively harmless as children tend to grow and develop in the normal

way. If the problem persists for several years, however, it may have an impact on the growth of the child and so may become problematic. 3) Food refusal where the child refuses food as a means of achieving or obtaining other things, not eating in certain situations or certain places etc. 4) Eating semi solid or pureed food which is inappropriate for the child’s age or just drinking milk or liquid nutritional supplements as the child finds it easier to consume food this way due to laziness or to save time. WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? Putting the child on some nutrient enriched powdered milk is not the solution. It merely diverts the child’s attention from consuming wholesome and normal food and does not help in any way to develop the child’s eating habits to include a wide range of foods. Parents should discuss the child’s eating habits with their health practitioner and establish the underlying cause of the lack of appetite to rule out any reasons that might be of concern or needs immediate medical attention. Gentle yet effective medication, like Homeopathy is required to safely treat the child and ensure that the child’s nutritional balance is not affected and

to enable the child to develop a natural affinity toward food. Food preferences are developed early in life and once they are established, they are hard to break. Therefore, parents should encourage healthy food choices for their children by introducing vegetables and fruits early to the child via their diet. Vegetable mashes, fruit and vegetable juices, foods prepared with whole foods and fruits etc should form a vital part of the child’s diet and the value of healthy nutritional food and food appreciation should be taught to the child. Limit snacks, junk food, milk and milk based drinks and artifical juices , allow the child to feed itself, allow the child to skip a meal now and then, give small portions to train the child to clear its plate and ask for more if he or she wants it, and do not force the child to eat the food it hates. HOMEOPATHIC HELP: Homeopathy can holistically understand and treat the child to naturally stimulate appetite and address any underlying cause for the poor appetite. Homeopathy will not only standardize the child’s appetite but also strengthen the child’s immune system, leaving most parents surprised by the reduced number of other infections as well. Homeopathic child turns out to be a healthy and happy child. Homeopathic supplements are natural

minerals which naturally balance the child’s mineral requirements. As an example to explain Homeopathy’s highly individualised treatment , the Homeopath takes an exhaustive case study of the child and prescribes very specific remedies. Some of the Homeopathic remedies that can help in children with poor appetite are Antimonium Crudum, Cinchona Officinalis, Cina, Lycopodium, Pulsatilla etc. (Please note that no medication should be taken without consulting your health practitioner). You may ask your personal query to Raj Kothuru (Homeopath) via email drraj@ aurahealth.com.au or phone 0425 761 826 / (03) 90775044 regarding any of your health problems. You will be offered authentic information and an opinion as to what best can be done pertaining to your ailment.
