Advani in yatra mode again, this time against corruption
S
ome time between now and the start of the winter session of Parliament, veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani will once again undertake a ‘yatra’ and traverse the whole country to raise awareness against corruption. “I will undertake a ‘yatra’ against corruption. The details are being worked out. Adhyakshji [Nitin Gadkari] has agreed,” Mr. Advani, flanked by the two leaders of
Opposition Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, announced at a press conference here on Thursday. Asked whether this signalled that he would be his party’s prime ministerial candidate during the next Lok Sabha election, Mr. Advani replied: “phir wahi ghisi piti baat [you are again on the same old subject].” Did he think that a mid-term election was possible? Mr. Advani repeated what he
recently said in Nellore, but stopped short of asking for an early election, which he had done in Nellore. “I said a few days ago this government’s legitimacy is over. The government may not think that, but I do believe the government’s mandate is exhausted.” The ‘yatra’ would be “more or less like the earlier ones.” It would be against corruption and would focus on clean politics, he said. ‘A suggestion’ When a reporter asked him whether he intended to go through Bellary during his ‘yatra’, his response was that it was a suggestion. Would Mr. Advani invite Anna Hazare to join the ‘yatra’? In response, he simply folded his hands as if to say ‘excuse me.’ On the proposed ‘yatra’ RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav said “all affiliates of the RSS have already been asked to actively participate in all anti-corruption campaigns, as we did in the Anna Hazare-led movement.” The last ‘rath-yatra’ undertaken by the 84-year-old BJP leader was the ‘Uday Yatra’ in March-April 2004 ahead of the election that year. At that time, he was master of the BJP party machine, unlike this time when Nitin Gadkari is in the saddle as party president. His most famous one was the ‘Ram rath yatra’ from Somnath to Ayodhya in 1990 – cut short at Samastipur by Lalu Prasad who arrested him. The BJP then withdrew support to the V.P. Singh government leading to its fall and a fresh election.

Time no healer for families of 9/11 Indian victims I
t is said that time is the best healer, but not for the Indian families in the US whose kith and kin lost their lives on that fateful September day ten years ago, when the city faced its worst terror attack. New Jersey resident Arjan Mirpuri’s 30year old son Rajesh was among the 3,000 people who died on 9/11 when two airplanes crashed into the Twin Towers. “My son did not even work at the World Trade Centre. He had gone there that day to attend a trade show. Before that day, Rajesh had never gone to the WTC. 9/11 became the most unfortunate day of our lives,” Mirpuri said. It has been 10 long years since but the pain and sadness in Mirpuri’s voice and expression is still palpable. “Whatever happened on 9/11 was wrong. It should never have happened. We still feel miserable and upset about the tragic events of the day,” he says. Mirpuri will organise a religious ceremony, now an annual fixture, on 9/11 in memory of his son. “We have tried to move on in life. We have to accept God’s will but nothing can compensate the loss of losing a son in such a manner.” The world may come together to remember the victims of the crash every year on 9/11 but for the Mirpuris, the anniversaries hold little meaning. “It may be 10, 15 or 20 years but we have to live with the loss everyday single day
of our lives. Our son has gone forever. We pray that no parent has to go through such a loss.” Mirpuri says he does not want to get into the political debate of what the countries and governments should do to tackle terrorism. Every country, be it the US or India, is trying to control terrorism but innocent people are killed everyday around the world. “We can only pray that the perpetrators of such acts realise what they are doing and stop taking the lives of innocent people. The world should live in peace and harmony,” he said. Surgeon John Mathai, who lost his younger brother Joseph, says 10 years may seem a long time to many but for him the years have not dulled the pain of the “unfortunate” event. “The loss of my brother is a loss that will
never be replaced. Ten years have gone by but there has hardly ever been a day where I have not thought of him and the wonderful time we spent in New York,” Mathai said. A leading technologist, Joseph had decided to attend a meeting at the World Trade Centre at the last minute. When he last spoke to his wife Teresa, he had told her that there was smoke inside the tower and was waiting for instructions to get out. John feels his brother must have escaped from the building as “there were no burns, only injuries. So I’m supposing they managed to get down somehow.” But it still was too late. “The attacks were an unfortunate event in human history and my brother was one of the unfortunate victims,” said John. John recalls that he had visited the ‘Windows on the World’ restaurant on the 106th floor of the north tower with his brother where they enjoyed their sushi meals. “I have not eaten sushi since his death,” John says. Attorney Umang Shastri, who lost his cousin Neil, says a foundation that the family has set up in memory of Neil has served as a “distraction” that helps in not thinking about his tragic death. Neil, 25 had worked for an internet company and had married his childhood sweetheart three months before the 9/11 attacks. He had spoken to his wife as the towers collapsed.
3D printing in newspapers displayed at Chennai WAN IFRA expo
P
rinting systems manufacturer manroland AG showcased 3D printing on plain newsprint at the WAN-IFRA India 2011 conference and expo held in Chennai. The technology by which a 3D image can be viewed in the average daily newspaper using lowcost glasses was demonstrated by the German newspaper Bild last year. Pictures chosen to be displayed in that issue in 3D included a fighter jet on the title page of the publication, and the desk of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Addition of the third dimension to an image is achieved either by shooting it in 3D with a suitable camera, or using software that recalculates existing pictures to achieve the same effect, according to the publication Messenger published by manroland. Several pictures featured in the issue of Messenger were printed for viewing in 3D, including printing equipment and a nature landscape among others. Similar publications have come out from Thailand, Brazil, Belgium and other countries. The technology offers enhanced prospects for both advertising and editorial, and raises the appeal of printed newspapers, a company official said.

Amar Singh: King of the sting operation now falls to one A
mar Singh lived by the sting, and died by it.
The corporate-turned-politician, who scared the world by tapping conversations, fell to a similar operation which exposed his aides on video, ‘buying’ MPs to back the Congress government in the trust vote in Parliament in 2008. His brazen denial, despite his secretary figuring in these clips, could take him till September 6 but no further. The unravelling of the Singh saga ends an incredible journey where the Thakur from Azamgarh walked the fine edge for so long, proving observers wrong at every step. None saw him going too far when his main weapon became public - taped conversations or stings for every occasion, good or bad. If Vishwanath Chaturvedi alleged corruption against Mulayam Singh Yadav, there was a tape with him bragging to manage the postretirement life of the adjudicating judge. When Anna Hazare aides cornered the Centre over Lokpal bill, Singh played out a purported conversation which had Shanti Bhushan assuring the SP chief that his son Prashant would manage the concerned Allahabad judge for a handsome fee. Even actor Sanjay Dutt claimed to have ‘stung’ then law minister H R Bhardwaj on Singh’s

bidding when he went to meet him about his TADA case. The split with SP in February 2010 came with threats that he had ‘Netaji’s’ secrets in his cupboard which he would not reveal. The stings were not that many, but fear of what Singh could do built his aura. “Sting is king” was the mantra. Colleagues said Singh’s fall was long seen as coming but it took really long. “He really survived well with all the controversies,” a leader said. It has been a long journey for the son of a hardware store owner in Kolkata who networked well and progressed fast. His first job as liaison man for a Delhi corporate house took him close to Madhavrao Scindia, starting his life in power. Finding his feet, Singh’s big break came when he switched to Mulayam’s
camp. For the rising star of Mandal politics, he positioned himself as the perfect complement to network in the corporate world and media. The partnership took wings. The Etawah strongman who drew sniggers of ‘pehelwan’ and ‘casteist’ from the chatterati was soon shaking hands with big businessmen and getting photographed with A-list glamdolls and the Big B. Singh came to be known as the socialist’s alter ego. The Thakur was on the fast track with his brazen ways but, observers say, he erred in working on the premise that politics had short memories. In 1999, he was the brain behind Mulayam’s decision to stall Sonia Gandhi’s shot at power after the ‘secular’ opposition had toppled Vajpayee. “Woh banegi rani, ham sab bharenge pani,” was his jibe at the Congress chief, then still learning the ropes. When BJP helped the SP chief become UP chief minister in late 2003 with indirect help from its governor and Speaker, Singh contrived the post of UP Development Council to lord over the administration and finances of the largest Indian state. Shilpa Shettys and Bipasha Basus thronged the mofussil Etawah while the Godrejs and Ambanis flew to Lucknow. Sky was the limit for Singh.
But his past caught up with him in 2004. Despite the SP having 37 MPs, the surprise winner Congress snubbed him. He later regretted that he was getting calls till 10 am. Singh was left to languish out of power for five long years, despite having more MPs than any Congress ally. The word was out - Sonia had not forgotten 1999. The big failure triggered desperate acts. Steering SP’s volte face on the nuclear deal, he saved the Congress government, only to find himself rebuffed when he sought returns. SP was hoping that Congress, burdened by its “nuke deal gratitude”, would play the marginal player in jointly contesting Lok Sabha polls in UP. Ban on Mumbai dance bars: We do not want dancers to go to streets, says Supreme Court

Subramanium said the ban was imposed to “prevent trafficking and exploitation” of women. He however, offered the government’s willingness to discuss the issue with the various stake holders in the dispute for an amicable solution. Senior counsel Anand Grover, on behalf of organisations espousing the cause of the dancers, said the matter should be disposed off early as it involved the livelihood of over 70,000 dancers. He denied the allegations that the dancers were engaged in obscene or objectionable dances. On the contrary he said, what they were doing was just a replica of the dance being performed in Hollywood and Bollywood movies. On April 12, the high court had quashed an amendment to the Bombay Police Act that banned dance bars as “unconstitutional” as it discriminated between dance performances in beer-bars and ordinary eateries -- which were banned -- and those in theatres, auditoriums and three star and above hotels -- which were exempted. According to the Maharashtra government, the legislation banning dance performances in beer bars was not an overnight decision, but a conscious move, following several complaints that dance bars and certain eateries were operating as prostitution rackets posing law and order problems. The aggrieved bar and restaurant owners have claimed that after the ban was imposed, 70,000 women have been left jobless.
he Supreme Court today asked the Maharashtra government to examine whether it can “modify” certain provisions of the Bombay Police Act to ban only “obscene and objectionable” form of dance in bars, hotels and restaurants. “We do not want them (dancers) to go from the bars and restaurants to the streets,” a three-judge bench of Altamas Kabir, S S Nijjar and Gyan Sudha Mishra observed, while granting the state two weeks time to examine the idea. The apex court felt that dance by itself cannot be considered as obscene, as banning the activity may render thousands of dancers jobless, thus pushing them to the streets. “We have children dancing. Couples dancing at different places. There are dance floors. That by itself does not make it obscene or objectionable,” the bench remarked, asking ex- Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium appearing for the state to examine whether sections 33, 34 of the Bombay Police Act could be modified to ban only obscene and objectionable dance forms. The Bombay high court had in 2006 quashed the ban imposed by the Mumbai police under the impugned provisions of the Act on dance shows in bars and restaurants on the ground that they were obscene, titillating and many of the girls were indulging in prostitution. The apex court had in 2006, admitted the state government’s appeal against the high court verdict striking down the legislation as being “unconstitutional”. During today’s brief arguments,

Corrupt babus may lose part of pension

ureaucrats face a 10% loss of pension for minor cases of corruption and a 20% cut for major infringements that lead to compulsory retirement from service. In a bid to deter corruption, government will soon implement the decision taken by the Group of Ministers on corruption. Cases of public servants accused of graft will be fast tracked by quickening the process of approvals. There is also a proposal to ensure that disciplinary action is decided within a year of a complaint being received. The anti-corruption steps are part of measures suggested by the GoM on corruption headed by finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and accepted by the government for implementation. The GoM was constituted
soon after Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s call for proactive measures to check corruption at the party’s plenary session at Burari in Delhi in November 2010. Not much happened until the latest edition of Gandhian Anna Hazare’s successful fast at Ramlila Maidan in August. Long delays in clearance for prosecution and slow trials have often meant that public servants accused of corruption retire from service and even pass away while proceedings drag on. Also, the delays lead to weakening of evidence and witnesses allowing corrupt officials to escape punishment. Minor penalties will attract a cut in pension up to 10% which will be imposed for five years. The consequence of major penalties will be a 20% lifelong cut in pension.

ndia’s rupee dropped to the weakest level in almost a year on speculation gold and fuel importers stepped up dollar purchases to settle bills. The local currency fell for a fourth day after crude oil traded in New York rose 3.9 percent to $89.34 a barrel yesterday, the highest close since Aug. 3. India imports more than 75 percent of its fuel requirements. Local gold demand may surge 25 percent during the Diwali festival season that falls next month, according to Rajesh Exports Ltd., the nation’s biggest jewelry maker. “Demand for dollars from importers is strong and we could see a sustained drop in the rupee in the coming days and weeks,” said Naveen Raghuvanshi, a Mumbai-based currency trader at Development Credit Bank Ltd. “The undertone for the local currency is going to be bearish and there is nothing positive to look forward to in the short term.” The rupee declined 0.05 percent to 46.1950 per dollar at the 5 p.m. close in Mumbai, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The currency fell to 46.2725 earlier, its weakest level since Sept. 16, 2010. Raghuvanshi forecasts the rupee may drop to 46.75 per dollar by the end of this month. Offshore forwards indicate the rupee will trade at 46.75 to the dollar
in three months, compared with expectations of 46.58 yesterday. Forwards are agreements to buy or sell assets at a set price and date. Non-deliverable contracts are settled in dollars.

AI acquisition plan a recipe for disaster ab initio: CAG M
erger ill-timed; harsh decisions needed to improve airline health
While recognising the need for the erstwhile Air India to acquire new aircraft, the Comptroller and AuditorGeneral criticised the national carrier and the Civil Aviation Ministry for an “unduly delayed acquisition process’’ that was “deleterious to the financial health of a commercial airline.’’ The CAG report, tabled in Parliament on Thursday, said the acquisition of 111 new aircraft for Air India and Indian Airlines was a “recipe for disaster’’ and should have sent alarm signals in the government. “Interestingly, although the original proposal of Air India for acquisition of 18+10 aircraft took its own time for processing, the revised proposal for acquisition of 18+50 aircraft was processed faster.” The process gained momentum culminating in the signing of the contract in December 2005. The CAG’s latest performance audit report on “Civil Aviation in India’’ also called the merger of the two erstwhile state-run carriers “illtimed,’’ and said “the financial case for the merger was not adequately validated prior to the merger.’’ The decision to increase the number of aircraft to 68 in AI’s acquisition plan “does not withstand audit scrutiny.” The entire acquisition
for both airlines was to be funded through debt (to be repaid through revenue generation), except for a relatively small equity infusion of Rs. 325 crore for IA. “This was a recipe for disaster ab initio and should have raised alarm signals in the Ministry, the Public Investment Board and the Planning Commission.” Terming the move for getting a “large number’’ of planes “risky,” the national auditor said the acquisition had “contributed predominantly’’ to the AI’s massive debt liability of Rs. 38,423 crore as on March 31 last year. The CAG recommended “a total hands-off approach [by the government] to the management of the airline.’’ The 121-page report dwelt at length on the ailing national carrier’s losses, fleet acquisition, merger, huge debt burden, delay in joining the global grouping Star Alliance and its financial and operational performance. The CAG said that the erstwhile AI’s initial proposal was made in December 1996 and its examination continued “in fits and starts’’ till January 2004 when a plan was made to buy 28 planes. It was revisited and later a decision taken to acquire 68 aircraft. The revised plan saw “a dramatic increase’’ in the number of planes to be purchased and the sequence of events up to November 2004 clearly
demonstrated that the pre-merger AI “hastily reworked’’ its earlier plan. Commenting on the “speed’’ of the process of acquisition of 68 aircraft, the CAG said that while the first plan took eight years to decide on 28 planes, “between August 2004 and December 2005, the proposals were formulated by Air India, approved by the Board, examined and approved by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Planning Commission, the Department of Expenditure, the Public Investment Board, an empowered Group of Ministers and also the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.’’ Observing that many assumptions in the revised plan were “flawed,” the report said the negotiation process was “irregular and adversely affected the transparency of the process.’’ “No benchmarks” of comparable prices and commercial intelligence were set. Consequently, “the effectiveness and efficacy of negotiations and the reasonableness
of the price arrived at are difficult to ascertain.” The CAG took the Ministry to task for ignoring the concerns over potential difficulties of IA in successfully finding the acquisition process with a positive Net Present Value (NPV). The subsequent Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor, Ministry of Civil Aviation, repeatedly expressed serious reservations about the acquisition proposal but his views “did not cause a rethink on the acquisition process.” The erstwhile IA had ordered
43 single-aisle aircraft from the European consortium, Airbus Industrie, while AI chose the American major, Boeing, for acquiring 68 aircraft. Commenting on the health of the merged entity, “Air India,” the CAG said it was in a “crisis situation’’ and salary payments and aviation fuel obligations were becoming difficult. “If the airline has to survive, the management and the employees will have to set personal interests aside and undertake some harsh decisions, till the health of the airline improves.’’

Indian courts can try offences committed by Indian in foreign country, rules Bench
A
dowry or any other offence committed by an Indian husband against his wife in a foreign country can be tried by a court in India, the Supreme Court has held. A three-judge Bench of Justice Altamas Kabir, Justice Cyriac Joseph and Justice S.S. Nijjar said “the provisions of Indian Penal Code have been extended to offences committed by any citizen of India in any place within and beyond India by virtue of Section 4 thereof.” The Bench, however said that offences committed by an Indian citizen in a foreign country would be amenable to provisions of IPC subject to the limitation imposed under Section 188
Cr.PC, viz seeking the prior consent of the Central government. In the present case, the appellant Thota Venkateswarlu was married to Parvatha Reddy Suneetha in November 2005 as per Hindu traditions and customs in Ongole in Andhra Pradesh. At the time of marriage Rs. 12 lakh in cash, 45 sovereigns of gold and Rs. 50,000 as ‘Adapaduchu katnam’ was alleged to have been given to the husband, mother-inlaw, and other relatives of the husband. According to Suneetha, her husband left for Botswana in January 2006 and she later joined him. While in Botswana, she was allegedly severely ill-treated and various demands were made including
a demand for additional dowry of Rs. 5 lakh. Unable to withstand the torture she sent a complaint to the Superintendent of Police, Ongole for dowry offences under IPC as well offences under the Dowry Prohibition Act. The magistrate, to whom the complaint was forwarded took cognisance and issued summons to the husband and others, who were questioned on their arrival to India. While the Andhra Pradesh High Court quashed proceedings against the appellant’s mother and two others, it dismissed his plea. The present appeal by Venkateswaralu is directed against this order. The appellant’s wife argued that part of the offence relating to dowry was committed in Indian soil and part of the offence was committed abroad. Hence the offence could be tried in Indian courts. However, the appellant argued that he could not be tried without the previous sanction from the Central government. Writing the judgment Justice Kabir pointed out that it was clear that the case relating to the alleged dowry offences were committed outside India. But since part of the offence was committed in India, the court here could try the appellant and the High Court was correct in rejecting his plea to quash the proceedings. The Bench while asking the trial court to take up the case said, the trial would not proceed without the sanction of the Central government as envisaged in Section 188 Cr.P.C.

Counter-terror specialists pointed out that while all appeals related to the September 19, 2008 encounter at Batla House were rejected by the high court in 2009, two terror trials involving two Pakistanis are currently pending in the court. Courts in other states have been targeted for similar reasons. Courts in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow, Varanasi and Faizabad were the first in the series of terror attacks on courts. In November 2007, the UP courts were hit by serial blasts by the Indian Mujahideen (IM).
An email sent by IM commander Atif Ameen and Ariz Junaid from a cyber café in east Delhi stated that the strikes were in retaliation against the ill-treatment of alleged Jaish-eMohammed terrorist Walliullah by lawyers in the Varanasi courts. Walliullah, a cleric from Phulpur near Allahabad, has now been convicted for the Sankatmochan Temple blast in Varanasi on March 7, 2006. He was thrashed by lawyers when he was produced in the Varanasi local court due to which his trial was shifted to Ghaziabad. While Atif Ameen was gunned down in the
Batla House gunfight, Ariz Junaid, the key IM bomb-maker, is still at large. Official sources said the Lucknow courts were hit as three Jaish-eMohammed terrorists had been arrested by the Special Task Force of the UP Police in November 2007 on charges of trying to target Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Faizabad was hit as the trial of those involved in the Jaish-eMohammed suicide attack on the Ayodhya temple was going on in the local district courts.

Our galaxy full of ‘time bombs’?
A
new study has suggested that thousands of “time bombs” could be scattered throughout our galaxy. Scientists have revealed that some old stars might be held up by their rapid spins, and when they slow down, they explode as supernovae. “We haven’t found one of these ‘time bomb’ stars yet in the Milky Way, but this research suggests that we’ve been looking for the wrong signs. Our work points to a new way of
searching for supernova precursors,” said astrophysicist Rosanne Di Stefano of the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics. The specific type of stellar explosion Di Stefano and her colleagues studied is called a Type Ia supernova. It occurs when an old, compact star known as a white dwarf destabilizes. A white dwarf is a stellar remnant that has ceased nuclear fusion. It typically can weigh up to 1.4 times
as much as our Sun - a figure called the Chandrasekhar mass after the astronomer who first calculated it. Any heavier, and gravity overwhelms the forces supporting the white dwarf, compacting it and igniting runaway nuclear fusion that blows the star apart. There are two possible ways for a white dwarf to exceed the Chandrasekhar mass and explode as a Type Ia supernova. It can accrete gas from a donor star, or two white dwarfs can collide. Most astronomers favour the first scenario as the more likely explanation. Di Stefano and her colleagues suggest that white dwarf spin might solve this puzzle. A spin-up/spin-down process would introduce a long delay between the time of accretion and the explosion. As a white dwarf gains mass, it also gains angular momentum, which speeds up its spin. If the white dwarf rotates fast enough, its spin can help support it, allowing it to cross the 1.4-solar-mass barrier and become a super-Chandrasekhar-mass star. Once accretion stops, the white dwarf will gradually slow down. Eventually, the spin isn’t enough to counteract gravity, leading to a Type Ia supernova.

areena Kapoor on being a favourite with the superstars, wedding plans and more... With three back-to-back blockbusters, I almost expect Kareena Kapoor to be sitting pretty on her throne with a tiara on, waving her magic wand. Instead, I meet the star as we know her. Candid and confident as she talks about love, life and leading the big, bad Bollywood race... You must have your hands full, guarding the number one status you’ve reclaimed with Bodyguard... I am more than happy being number 100 on the list, too! But that doesn’t take away from the fact that Bodyguard has shattered records. I’m enjoying every bit of it. I work to see and sense this adulation, not for tags that are hardly permanent. But a Salman Khan film is always all about him. The heroine is generally incidental... I can proudly say that here’s a Salman film where the girl finally has something to do apart from hanging around and singing songs. Bodyguard is predominantly about the heroine. There is no movie without her.
Many say you’re piggyback riding on the Khans’ success. Is it easy to earn a hit that way? It was the Khans who came to me. They could have chosen anyone, but they wanted me. If I don’t work with Aamir, Salman, Saif, Shah Rukh and Imran, with whom am I supposed to work with? They are practically half the industry. I’m pretty lucky. I mean, I’m the only actress to have worked with Aamir in two back-to-back films. Your equation with the three big Khans must be quite different... They basically see me as Lolo’s (Karisma Kapoor) little sister. With each of them, the relationship is very professional. Like Salman has his quirks, so do SRK and Aamir. They also know how I work, so there is a comfort level. Is Aamir your favourite of the lot? Everyone knows I am a huge Aamir fan. We share great chemistry, but I think Saif and I also make a deadly pair in Agent Vinod. It’s probably why he insisted on casting me in this film. Are you insecure when Saif casts other heroines in his home productions? Not at all! I’m actually looking forward
to a film where he’d be cast opposite Priyanka (Chopra). There’s something very approachable about her and something very suave and sexy about Saif. Their pairing would work well. On a personal note, we hear Saif and you are getting hitched next February... I also hear about how many carats Saif has gifted me, and the desert we’ll be serving at our wedding! It’s very intriguing. I barely manage to meet my family and Saif and people are already planning my wedding in their heads. Why hide marriage plans, especially since you’ve said you’re ready for it? I am the only actress who can proudly proclaim to have a personal and professional life. I don’t understand when people say things like they don’t have time for love. I have given some of my biggest hits with Saif in my life. What bigger proof that it works if you balance it out. There was a point when I said I want to do nothing but work. Now that has changed. My relationship is of utmost importance. So when a date is fixed, we will let everyone know.

AUSAM marks the debut of Pankaj Kapoor (one of the most awesome actors that Bollywood has seen in present times) as a director, and since the film stars his own son, teenage sensation and a star in his own right, Shahid Kapoor, we have high expectations from the music of the film. Shahid himself has been associated with countless memorable and super hit compositions, and with melody king Pritam at the helm of affairs, along with his trusted aide, Irshad Kamil, who together spelled magic with JAB WE MET and delivered a couple of chartbusters in BADMAASH COMPANY, things only get more exciting. And now let’s check out if Pritam & Co. can indeed repeat the magic of JAB WE MET once again! There is double delight in store for those who might feel that a seasoned singer like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan would have done more justice to this type of track as Pritam throws the mike to the prince of ‘sufi’ romantic numbers , who is excellent as always and makes this number truly special with his characteristic rendition! Rustic Punjabi flavour intact, the fun continues with “Sajh Dhaj Ke”, and Mika the man behind many crazy, naughty numbers, especially with a Punjabi touch is certainly in his elements as he renders this celebration mode number in his much loved style. The song is in the same corridor as Dilip Kumar’s legendary number “Sala Main To Sahab Ban Gaya” (SAGINA) or more recently from Pritam’s own, “Bhootni Ke” (SINGH IS KINNG)”. Although the tempo which began with the absolutely rocking ‘mukhda’ does
take a beating in the all too familiar and heard before Punjabi ‘bhangra’, ‘antra’ but nonetheless the song is highly entertaining and will be loved and appreciated by all. The lyrics, which are a mix and match of English, Punjabi, Urdu and colloquial Hindi, are absolutely top class as they bring out the situation perfectly and add as a narrative rather than a stopover. The song is featured twice as remixes. The first “Club Mix” and second, “Desi Mix”, both by DJ Tiger Style. Must add that both are space fillers but since the song is so very entertaining the idea behind the remixes works as the songs are just right to be enjoyed dancing to in clubs, discos and parties. The heart rendering sonorous ‘alaap’ by Ustad Sultan Khan followed by a couplet- “Tera shaher jo peeche chhoot raha kuch ander ander toot gaya, Hairan hain mere do naina yeh jharna kahan se phoot raha”- is just the right precursor for a sad song that dwells on a situation like heart break and separation, a ‘birha’ composition, and “Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi” has the highly talented Hans Raj Hans behind the mike. However as we get into the main ‘mukhda’ it has such a striking resemblance to the first line of A. R. Rahman’s iconic patriotic number, “Ma Tujhe Salaam” that one instantly asks why, but thankfully the similarity ends there and Pritam’s gets into his own after that and on the whole it is a very good number, though a tad morose and even slow in parts and will appeal to a select audience. The song features twice, first as reprise version by Shahid Mallya and secondly as “Mehfil Mix” by the very famous and popular ‘sufi’ ‘qawwaals’ Wadali Brothers.
Shahid showcases his talent further with the reprise version with his deft handling of a difficult to render track, but naturally it is the Wadali Brothers whose ‘jugalbandi’ provides the icing on the cake with their stellar performance. The music arrangements too are different and lots of harmonium and ‘tabla’ provides just the right sound for a perfect setting. The feeling continues further with another sad situational number, “Poore Se Zara Sa Kam Hain” and it’s maestro Ustad Rashid Khan who has been assigned the task of rendering this classy track and will certainly be appreciated by the audience that knows what good music is. Irshad Kamil’s “Yeh Dooriyan” still remains a standout example of excellent poetry and with “Poore Se Zara Sa Kam Hain” he showcases his brilliance further with some superb lyrics that convey the feeling of love in a manner that is so very novel, simple but so very effective and pleasing as well. The melancholy feel to the album is perked up with “Aag Lage Us Aag Ko” and the all Punjabi flavour to the album now gives way to Gujarati as Karan Sagarthia lights up the proceedings with a lively, spirited and intense rendition. A song fit enough to be played and danced to during the ‘Navratras’. This ‘Garba’ may not find the same universal acceptance as “Dholi Taaro” (HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM) due to its very rustic and highly localized Gujarati flavour but will certainly find its patrons especially amongst its target audience. Pritam’s use of traditional Hindustani instruments is a delight to hear and savour. Prtiam rounds off the album
with a definite chart scorcher in the form of “Mallo Malli” sung by Tochi Rana with some cool rapping by Hard Kaur, and it comes as quite a surprise as one did not expect to find an all out westernized, funky dance number in this predominantly traditional album. However it appears that keeping in mind Shahid Kapoor’s immensely popular dancing skills this song has been composed and though it may appear out of context, we certainly don’t mind as this highly rhythmic dance number does turn out to be extremely likeable and will definitely provide what the masses (especially youth) may be missing here in this classy album. The two remixes of the composition, the first by Lehmber Husasainpuri (“Saddi Gali” from TANU WEDS MANU fame) is definitely more superior as Lehmber’s highly energized vocals suit the tempo better. The other is a simple remix and that too is pleasant on the ears and not jarring as the tempering is not overboard and over the top as in most cases. As we round off, the music
imesh Reshammiya’s return as a music director in Bodyguard got him a lot of attention. And while he is busy reveling in his comeback, Mumbai Mirror uncovered a secret that might dampen his celebrations prematurely. The song Teri Meri is not as original as the credits claim. Himesh composed four of the tracks for the film, one of which was Teri Meri. The song just happens to be a rip off of a Romanian folk song La Betleem (Down There in Bethlehem), which has been rendered by various artists in the country. One of the latest renditions of the song was composed by Cleopatra Stratan, the youngest singers to score

a commercial success. When contacted, Himesh asserted that his tune was original. He said, “Teri Meri is a raag based original composition. Salman bhai had a folk melody in mind, which I developed into a purely Indian raag based melody with alaaps and Indian phrased melody. There is no controversy at all to this.” The music of Bodyguard was originally to be composed by Pritam. However, Salman decided to hand over the music directorial reins to Himesh. Pritam, who in the credit roll was referred to as the guest composer, worked on the song I Love You.

Also, Comscore was measuring behavior from people who visited the Google+ website pages, which means those who came in through the Google+ bar at the top of most Google pages weren’t counted. With a built-in visitor base of more than 1 billion worldwide, Google has the potential to convert a high number of users to Google+, Comscore suggested.

Salman Khan on Shah Rukh’s show?

he fifth season of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ has gone on air but for Sony, it’s their second innings with one of the most successfully running non-fiction shows. The famous baritone (looking dapper in Rohit Bal’s creations) returns once again, the format is more or less the same with a few changes, the contestants participating from small towns and the interiors of our country with their emotional back stories, so on and so forth. Does it work? Yes, it does. Amitabh Bachchan and the general knowledge questions keep you coming back to the show. True, now I don’t need to sit in front of the TV sets. I can go pottering around the house finishing household chores, looking at my son’s homework and still hear Bachchan in the background asking questions to nervous contestants, some who make him recite his famous dialogues while others who break into songs and tears. I have seen it all before so I don’t really need to go through the motions once again. When Big B runs the contestants through the rules (now the participant has to pre-set the amount in the 13-question tree till which they think they can confidently sail through, for instance, he/she can set a mark on the Rs 80,000 question, the catch being, the buzzer now called Tiktiki — earlier it was Ghadiyal Babu — will set the time limit to 45 seconds
within which the contestant has to answer till he/she reaches that mark after which there is no time limit) or makes small talk with them, it is déjà vu. Yes, it does get a bit irritating when the proceedings slow down as Bachchan takes his own sweet time to tell the answer. But what’s heart-warming is the superstar’s reassuring demeanour and the warm stories of the contestants — like a young girl who dreamt of becoming an IPS officer but is now compelled to stay with her maternal uncle and aunt after losing her parents and brother in an accident or about a woman who had taken a loan to buy a tractor for her old farmer-father and now wants to repay the money and make his life comfortable. At the time of writing, I don’t know if Kaun Banega Crorepati 5 opened the TRP charts with a bang, I also don’t know how the show will eventually fare but KBC continues to be an entertaining draw. It is great fun to sms answers to questions from home and stand a chance of winning (yes, yes I know it could well be the mobile service providers’ ploy of minting some more money, luring gullible viewers who want to hit the jackpot). Yet, KBC 5 is still a notch above its rival shows.

Apparently, the show is being produced by SRK’s Red Chillies Idiot Box. Salman has already shot the episode before he flew to the USA for surgery. The guest list of Preity’s show includes Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal and Shah Rukh. Reportedly, Aamir refused to appear on the show when he got to know that it was being produced by Red Chilies Idiot Box. After Aamir pulled out, the channel decided to open
the show with Salman’s episode. In ‘Up Close And Personal With PZ,’ Salman and Preity talk about their personal and professional life, something unknown to the audience. Talking to a daily, a delighted Preity said, “The guests on this show are my friends and colleagues. I don’t intend to create controversies to get eyeballs for my chat show because I don’t think every chat show needs to stir up gossip to become popular. I love each of my co-stars and they love me. After that, it doesn’t matter who kicks off the show. I’m happy with whatever I’ve shot so far. Each episode will be a revelation, I promise.”

How to make Pav Usal: 1. In a heavy bottom vessel and heat oil in it. 2. Make the paste of coriander, green chillies and grated coconut. 3. Stir fry this paste in the oil for 2 minutes. 4. Add 3 cups water and bring to a boil. 5. Add all the other ingredients, stir and boil. 6. Simmer for 15-20 minutes with stirring occasionally. 7. Cook till oil separates and floats on top and peas get soft. 8. Check the seasoning. 9. To garnish sprinkle chopped onions, pieces of lemon and sev. 10. Serve hot with bread or pav.

ust over a million cases of wine are sold annually in India -- a country that loves its beer and whisky, which together account for as many as 373 million cases. Even beer that at times is paired with wines accounts for 140 million cases. “Indians are not averse to wines. It’s just that it’s inaccessible due to the price factor. If the prices come down it would ease the process of familiarisation with the product,” sommelier Magandeep Singh told IANS. Maharashtra and Karnataka have the ideal climate for vine cultivation and wines of some well-known Indian brands such as Sula, Indage and Grovers are produced there. Among the international ones, more than a thousand brands are popular in India. So what’s keeping wine out of reach? “Government policies need to loosen up on customs duties. States have to appreciate the difference between wine and hard liquor to formulate their policies accordingly,” said Subhash Arora, president of the Indian Wine Academy and the Delhi Wine Club. “Availability has been a big constraint due to government policies,” Arora told IANS. Another deterrent, he says, is: Hotels and restaurants are not coming forward to bring prices down, making them unaffordable. Prices of top global brands can go up to Rs.25,000. Indian wines though are within reach. A Sula white, for example, is available at Rs.500. In a letter to President Pratibha Patil after a state banquet for the Obamas, Arora even requested her to consider serving Indian wines to promote the “health beverage” which in moderate consumption is said to be good for the heart and also for diabetics . “The Indian domestic wine market is a little over a million cases but access to imported ones is inhibited by 160 percent import duty and state levies. If the price is not cut, it is going to remain an elitist and societal drink,” said wine expert Sanjay Menon. Nationmaster.com, a Sydney-based website, released a list of 30 countries, according to which the biggest consumer of wine is Luxembourg at 15.5 litres per capita, followed by France at 14.8 litres. Nashik, called India’s Nepa Valley, is the hub of the Indian wine industry. There are over 50 vineyards in and around the Wine Park in Maharashtra -- 22 of them are in and around Nashik alone. Some feel wine also goes well with Indian food. “Adaptive Indian food is what goes with wine,” said sommelier Magandeep Singh. “Wine doesn’t have to replace beer or whisky as it has its own place. You don’t consume whisky with food; you have wine. I would say the industry is improving with many rising stars among wine brands.” Little wonder several Indian and overseas firms are joining the wine bandwagon thanks to business prospects and the low costs of setting up a winery. Gabriel Ruiz Lopez, chief executive of Grapeland, a Spanish wine company, said: “India is just awakening to wines. People usually buy those which are priced low. ctress Sonakshi Sinha says she has neither signed a film with superstar Shah Rukh Khan or with actor Ranveer Singh.
“I haven’t signed any film with Shah Rukh Khan. I had also read the news somewhere but I haven’t signed any film yet,” Sonakshi told reporters at Ambience Mall, where she had come to launch the new range of Puma running shoes. Rumours were abuzz that Sonakshi has been cast opposite King Khan in Abhinav Kashyap’s next, a love story set in Australia. Reports also suggested that the 24-year-old has been roped in star with actor Ranveer Singh in Yash Raj’s new film. Sonakshi denied this too, saying she is “not doing any film with Ranveer”. Meanwhile, one-film old Sonakshi is on cloud nine after having six films in pipeline. She is shooting for Shirish Kunder’s “Joker” and is about to start shooting for “Rowdy Rathore”, both of which stars Akshay Kumar. She then as “Race 2″ and “Son of Sardar”. Directed by Johar’s former assistant, Karan Malhotra, ‘Agneepath’ is the remake of the 1990 superhit immortalised of sort by Amitabh Bachchan with his barritoned delivery of raw dialogues and punch lines with the character of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan at the helm. A recent teaser shows Sanjay sporting a wicked smile and bulky physique, while looking evil to the core in his bald avatar with the puffedup eyes. Dressed in a black outfit, the ‘Khalnayak’ who plays Kancha, originally essayed by Danny Denzongpa, wears a silver ring on top of his left ear with tattoos engraved on his arms.

When asked if the typical villain to the clan of Gabbar and Shakaal is revived through Sanjay’s character, Johar said, “the quintessential format of Hindi cinema has made its entry again where there is a villain, a hero, a heroine...and who better than Sanjay Dutt to flag off the thing of a villain.” The upcoming ‘Agneepath’ slated to release on January 13 next year already has its fan base in place. The remake has retained some of the old characters from the original like Vijay Dinanath Chauhan being played by Hrithik Roshan and that of Kancha by Sanjay Dutt, besides some modifications. Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor is the new entrant in the film. Even the love story between Priyanka Chopra and Hrithik has no resonance to the Madhavi-Amitabh track of the original version.

According to a study by marriage portal Jeevansathi.com, over 60 percent profiles posted on the site have listed themselves under the ‘manglik’ and ‘non-manglik’ bracket, as determined by astrology. ‘It is also interesting to note that the acceptance of mangliks among the non-manglik community is as low as nine percent, which clearly shows that astrological compatibility is still one of the key criteria considered during arranged marriages,’ the study said. Also, these beliefs are not just restricted to members of the older generation, but are prevalent amongst youngsters too. ‘A look at the demographics of the

roducers of Ahana Deol’s debut film are no longer keen on casting the actor If recent developments are any indication, Ahana Deol may not be making her debut opposite Prateik. Apparently, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, the production house backing the movie, is trying to get director Shoojit Sircar to cast another actor instead. According to a source, the producers had second thoughts about the young actor after the release of Prakash Jha’s film on the reservation issue. “After watching Aarakshan, they had some apprehensions about him pulling off the complex character in their movie. So they want Shoojit to sign on someone else, “ explains our source. Interestingly, it was the director and the producers who were keen on casting Prateik for their film. “When the actor was first approached, he wasn’t very eager. But after considerable pursuit, he agreed to act in this film, “ recalls the source. Now the tables have turned. The Akshay-Murugadoss project has taken longer to take off than expected. And with very good reason. Says a source , “Murugadoss was all set to remake one of his Tamil action films with Akshay. The Hindi script had been re-written keeping in mind Akshay’s pan-India image. Murugadoss who in many ways spearheaded the resurgence of action cinema in Bollywood with Ghajini, heard of a spate of Hindi remakes of Tamil-Telugu action films that have been released during the past one year and are expected to be released in the coming months. Those included Vipul Shah’s Force a remake of the Tamil smash-hit Kaakha Kaakha and Prabhu Deva’s Rowdy Rathore. ” That’s when all of Murugadoss’ plans for Akshay changed. Rather than a remake of a Tamil hit, Murugadoss started writing a new script, this time an original one, with no superhero doing stylized action. Says Murugadoss, “I’m aware of all the action remakes in Hindi. I don’t want to comment on them. All I’ll say is my second Hindi film will have action very different from Ghajini. Neil Nitin Mukesh is apparently not a very popular figure on the sets of Abbas-Mustan’s Players. Playing the villain, he gets to perform daring stunts and mouth the best lines. The rest of the cast only discovered this as the shooting progressed. What’s worse, the actor is bursting with inputs on scenes or song sequences, annoying several of the other actors in the movie. However, while the rest of the cast is apparently taking Neil’s ‘friendly advice’ with a smile, Sonam Kapoor has decided not to entertain him. For a song-and-dance sequence, Neil (who prides himself on being a singer, composer and choreographer) started supervising the choreographer. “Neil meant no harm. He likes to make his presence felt on the sets. But when he advised Sonam on how to do her steps, she told him to keep his advice to himself, “ says a source.
Giving the cold-shoulder Red-faced, the actor apparently withdrew from the scene and kept quiet thereafter. Neil, as expected, laughs off the story. “Sonam is a darling. I don’t need to show dance moves to a person who is a genius at it. In fact, I learnt a few extra dance steps from her, “ he says. Our source from the cast, however, insists otherwise. “He did try to suggest dance steps to Sonam, and she didn’t like it. Salman fine after surgery, advised complete bed rest

ollywood actor Salman Khan, who underwent a surgery to treat a nerve condition that has been causing extreme pain in his cheeks and jaw, got operated and is doing fine, said a source. “Yes, the surgery took place late last night and Salman is fine now. He has just been advised complete bed rest for a few days after which he can start working,” a source close to the actor told. The 45-year-old actor was suffering from a medical condition called trigeminal neuralgia and aneurysm for a long time now and when the pain became unbearable, Salman left for the US Aug 29 for treatment. Salman, whose film “Bodyguard” is setting cash registers ringing at the box office, will leave for London after he recuperates to start the shoot of his next venture, “Ek Tha Tiger”.

I don’t know who in the middle-east decides whether the viewers are mature enough to watch the film or not, but I guess it’s a moralistic stand, “ adds Anurag. Interestingly, the film was given an A certificate and passed by the Censor Board in India without much hassle. The producers, therefore, are not losing hope in this case either. Says Anurag, “We have sent it for screening to a distributor in Dubai. Hopefully, things will work out.” The film releases worldwide this Friday.

The Munnis and the Sheilas of Bollywood can take a backseat for a while because the 33-year-old Vidya, even with her not so washboard abs, might just become every man’s fantasy with her titillating moves, curvaceous frame, playfulness, and sensuous ways in her scenes with Naseeruddin Shah, Tusshar Kapoor and Bollywood’s very own serial kisser Emraan Hashmi. With its into-the-face dialogues, the trailer itself might leave many gasping like Tusshar when Vidya says: “Mujhe jo chahiye uska mazza raat ko hee aata hai” and many ogling like Naseer does when she decks up for a film shoot. Perhaps what the trailer misses is the dark side of Silk Smitha’s story, which the film is expected to highlight. But it does its job and it does it well. It’s been just six years since Vidya made her Bollywood debut with “Parineeta”, but in the short period, the actress showed her fearless streak by roles that are as different as chalk and cheese like “Ishqiya” and “Paa”. Her choice of unconventional scripts with experimental roles that challenge the actor in her has continued to set an example of what it takes to strike the right balance
between commercial and parallel cinema. If it was a lonely lover in her first movie, Bengali project “Bhalo Theko”, Vidya went on to show her subtle and romantic side in “Parineeta”. In “Lage Raho Munnabhai”, she was seen in a conventional role, but she played it unconventionally. Her performance in “Guru” as a multiple sclerosis patient may have been short, but it didn’t go unnoticed. Her films “Salaam-e-Ishq”, “Heyy Babyy” and “Kismat Konnection” may not have done much to boost her film career, but Vidya remained dauntless. She broke all doubts about her dancing skills through her performance on the song “Ami je tomar” in “Bhool Bhulaiyaa”. For a brief period, her choice of dresses was talk of the town and was much criticised, but Vidya kept to her work and when she returned as single mother in “Paa”, her high-voltage performance shut the wagging tongues. “Ishqiya” further strengthened filmmakers’ belief in her versatility and capacity as an actor. In Abhishek Chaubey’s film, Vidya convincingly played a conniving and manipulative woman who doesn’t shy away from
using her sexuality to fulfil her goals. And then “No One Killed Jessica” saw her in a completely different avatar. Based on the real-life Jessica Lall murder case, the movie saw her as a grieving sister who runs from pillar to post to get justice for her sister. After entertaining viewers with
her plain Jane look, Vidya has now picked up a contrasting role in “The Dirty Picture”. She oozes oomph like never before and one wonders if the movie will be Vidya’s next stepping stone to her ever-rising success story. ‘Avatar’ star Zoe Saldana says racism is very much prevalent in Hollywoood and she had to bear its brunt while hunting for roles. The 33-year-old actress, who rose to prominence after playing the female lead Neytiri in James Cameron’s 3-D blockbuster, said she feels sorry for people who discriminate on the basis of colour, reported Daily Mail online. “Of course there’s racism and discrimination in Hollywood. You go for a part and they say, ‘Oh, we really liked her, she’s amazing, but we wanted to go with something more traditional.’ As if I’m not a traditional American! I feel sorry for people like that.

Train sequence of Bond film might be shot near Dudhsagar falls The picturesque Dudhsagar waterfall, situated on the GoaKarnataka border is one of the few locations in India selected for a train sequence to be shot for the 23rd James Bond movie. Sources stated that recce of the spot, located in the thick jungles on the state border, has already been done and the railway ministry has also given its approval. The South-Western Railway operates train services from near the waterfall. Some issues related to shooting, however, are yet to be sorted out. “Height is an issue. For the sequence, they require a particular height, which is not there near this spot. But they have still listed this place,” a source stated. But, even though the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), a nodal agency which gives permission for film shooting in Goa, is yet to receive an application for the shooting, sources said the next Bond movie would be shot over 40 days from January to March.

ohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi continued their fine form as they advanced to the men’s doubles quarterfinal even as Sania Mirza made her exit from the women’s doubles competition with a third-round loss in the US Open here. Bopanna and Qureshi, seeded fifth, defeated Australian Paul Hanley and his Belgian partner Dick Norman 6-2 6-3 in a contest lasting a little over an hour. They will now face the unseeded British pair of Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins, who got a walkover from their 13th seeded Spanish rivals Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez. Bopanna and Qureshi converted all three break points that came their way while holding their own serve all through the match. The fifth seeds struck 24 winners against their opponents’ 10. However, there was disappointment for India in the women’s doubles event as Sania and her Russian partner Elena Vesnina lost to the Czech pair of Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. The sixth seeded Indo-Russian team went down 6-7 (4) 6-7 (5) against their ninth seeded rivals. CCI secretary N Srinivasan has admitted before Parliament’s Standing Committee on finance that the Indian board needed to own up for financial irregularities in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Srinivasan said the BCCI could not claim exoneration simply by claiming that suspended IPL chairman Lalit Modi was running the show. The BCCI had previously put the onus on Modi when it came to explaining lapses in expenditure during the first three editions of the IPL, maintaining that other senior officials had no idea of wrongdoings since Modi was given a free hand. The change in the BCCI’s stance is revealed in a report of the Standing Committee. The committee, of which former finance minister Yashwant Sinha is chairman, stated in its report that BCCI president Shashank Manohar - “when closely questioned by the committee” - admitted that the cheques were signed not by Modi but by Srinivasan, who was the BCCI treasurer, and subsequently by M P Pandove, who replaced Srinivasan. The report - a copy of which is with TOI - has Srinivasan stating on record: “We were taken for a ride. I know we cannot plead before you that we did not know all this was happening. Your question would be, were you not vigilant? What did you do? I am sorry, sir, there is no defence for me. No defence in front of you. So, I am not pleading that at all. We just put our heads down.” The committee report revealed that there had been serious
irregularities in awarding media rights and commercial contracts, and that the board flouted rules and norms with impunity. The revelations come in the backdrop of the board’s refusal to come under the ambit of the Right to Information Act (RTI) and will lend

credence to sports minister Ajay Maken’s insistence that the cash-rich body be made more accountable to the public, and its workings be made more transparent. The BCCI had argued that did not depend on the government for funds and hence could not come under the RTI, but the Standing Committee has noted that a “coherent and consistent policy should be devised for the future whereby high-profile moneyspinning events such as the IPL are not kept out of the ambit of law and taxability”. Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Darda, a
member of the Standing Committee, said, “When we questioned them (BCCI president and secretary), they had absolutely no answers. With folded hands they just stood there and admitted they had no explanations to offer. The problem with BCCI is too much money and too many big names involved in the administration. Sharad Pawar, Farooq Abdullah, Arun Jaitley and all politicians want to be part of it.” The Standing Committee noted that the BCCI “meekly endorsed and approved decisions that were taken by the chairman (Modi) and all those responsible in breaching the law should be investigated and punished without further loss of time”. Based on these recommendations, the government now seems to be keen on bringing the BCCI under the umbrella of the central government. Darda added: “It was harrowing when we went through the records. Money transferred from some tax haven to some other tax haven finally ends up with some connection in IPL. The committee wants to know what has been going on. We will have to ensure that they are brought to account.” It is understood that Manohar and Srinivasan will be summoned by the Standing Committee again as and when required. “Monopoly is an issue too,” Darda said, “If the board is brought under RTI, the ordinary cricket fan will at least know what he’s paying for. Far too much is either unaccountable or being swept under the carpet.”

day after the old guard led by Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar forced the Union Cabinet to reject the reformatory National Sports Development Bill 2011, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Ajay Maken on Wednesday “hit out” at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) saying it needs to be more transparent and accountable in its functioning to the citizens of the country. Stating that the proposed Bill had only aimed at making sports bodies more transparent and efficient and was in no way an attempt to take control of the national sports federations, Mr. Maken said: “I would not like to comment on what transpired in the Cabinet on Tuesday. I would just like to reiterate the Sports Ministry’s stand and my own stand. We are in no way trying to control the sports federations or sports bodies in the country,” he told reporters here.
‘Disappointed’ Mr. Maken said he was disappointed with the opposition to the Bill by cricket administrators, and said that federations need to be brought under the ambit of the Right to Information Act for greater accountability. “We just want transparency and efficiency

Stating that his Ministry would re-draft the Bill after consultations with various quarters including the Ministries, Mr. Maken said: “We don’t
intend to have our own representatives in any way in any of the managements of these sports bodies. We don’t want to direct them,” he said.
Demands age restrictions On the other hand, he said the board or the federations should have age restrictions for members. “After all, in bureaucracy, we have 60 years as age of retirement, in judiciary it is 65, and in others it is 62-63; we have kept the age limitation at 70 years for sports federations,” he said. “What we are saying is that 25 per cent of the executive body should consist of sportspersons of the same game, we are not saying that government will appoint that 25 per cent. Sports persons who have played at the national levelshould among themselves elect those who should represent 25 per cent of their executive body. We want to give more power to sportspersons, we want them to be transparent in their accounting and entire process, we want them to be answerable to the citizens of India because they are sending teams which are representing India as a nation,” he added.

Tendulkar was carrying a toe injury for quite a while but the problem aggravated just before the opening match of the fivematch series at Chester-le-Street on Saturday. The 38-year-old Tendulkar missed the opening match of the ODI series and has now been ruled out for four weeks, leaving a struggling India without their most accomplished batsman. Such is India’s injury plight that they may have to go in with five specialist bowlers since there are no batting options available. Injured batsman Rohit Sharma’s replacement Manoj Tiwary is yet to join the squad while Ravindra Jadeja, who was included in the team as a replacement for Gautam Gambhir, is expected to arrive tomorrow and may not be in a position to play. India will now have to play out of their skin to be able to put it across England in the series. n Indian origin researcher along with other colleagues have indicated that the most common breast cancer uses the most efficient, powerful food delivery system known in human cells and blocking that system kills it. This method of starving cancer cells could provide new options for patients, particularly those resistant to standard therapies such as tamoxifen, according to Georgia Health Sciences University researchers. The transporter has three energy sources instead of the usual one or two, Mr. Ganapathy said. While that may seem like a loss for healthy cells, it bolsters the cancerfighting potential for drugs that block SLC6A14 by making it a more specific cancer target. “Since the normal cells do not depend on this transporter, you can use a drug that selectively blocks
it to target cancer cells,” said Mr. Ganapathy. The compound they used is alphamethyl-DL-tryptophan, already used in humans for short periods when the get a PET scan in certain areas of the brain. When the researchers treated estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cells with it or put it in the drinking water of the mice with the cells, rapid growth stopped and the cancer cells died. The study has been published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

new study has found that aerobic exercise is the best bet when it comes to losing that dreaded belly fat. Belly or abdominal fat - known in scientific communities as visceral fat and liver fat - is located deep within the abdominal cavity and fills the spaces between internal organs. It’s been associated with increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, and certain kinds of cancer. “When it comes to increased health risks, where fat is deposited in the body is more important than how much fat you have,” said Duke exercise physiologist Cris Slentz, Ph.D., lead author of the study published in the American Journal of Physiology. “Our study sought to identify the most effective form of exercise to get rid of that unhealthy fat,” he added.

When Duke University Medical Center researchers conducted a head-to-head comparison of aerobic exercise, resistance training, and a combination of the two, they found aerobic exercise to be the most efficient and most effective way to lose the belly fat that’s most damaging to your health. “Resistance training is great for improving strength and increasing lean body mass,” said Slentz. “But if you are overweight, which two thirds of the population is, and you want to lose belly fat, aerobic exercise is the better choice because it burns more calories,” he added. Aerobic training burned 67 p.c. more calories in the study when compared to resistance training. The study will be published in the American Journal of Physiology Endocrinology and Metabolism.
