Hillary Clinton condemns leaks: US diplomats reach out to India W

ashington: As US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned whistleblower website WikiLeaks’ release of a quarter million documents, a senior official said the US has had multiple conversations with officials in India in a damage control exercise. Clinton on Monday branded the leaks as an “attack on international community” saying the illegal disclosure of secret information “puts people’s lives in danger, threatens our national security and undermines our efforts to work with other countries to solve shared problems.” Our diplomats are doing what their foreign counterparts do: US “This disclosure is not just an attack on America’s foreign policy; it is an attack on the international community, the alliances and partnerships, the conventions and negotiations that safeguard global security and advance economic prosperity,” she said. Shortly after Clinton’s remarks, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters: “We have had multiple conversations with officials in India. And like India and

other countries, we’ll continue those conversations in the coming days.” WikiLeaks disclosures criminal: White House

Besides US Ambassador to India Timothy Roemer, Under Secretary of State Bill “Burns and others have been in touch with their counterparts in India,” he said but declined to say why Washington had reached out to India. Asked to comment on Clinton’s reported description of India and other members of G4 -- Brazil, Germany and Japan- as “self-appointed frontrunners” for a permanent seat of UN Security Council, Crowley said: “I’m not going to comment on the contents of any cable.” Nor would he say what was broadly in the documents relating to the South Asia. “Again, I don’t think I can answer that question without getting into the contents of documents, which we won’t do.” Obama Admin reviews handling of secret US documents Clinton was talking to her counterparts simply as a “a colleague and friend,” he suggested. “We have called governments to warn them

about what was happening, and we will continue to answer any question that they have as this continues.” Asked if it was legal on the part of diplomats to gather biometric data as directed by Clinton, as revealed by a leaked cable, Crowley said: “Diplomats - we both promote democracy, the rule of law, and we obey United States law.” Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said President Barack Obama “was - as an understatement - not pleased” with the WikiLeaks disclosures. Clinton says diplomats would understand the leaked cables Clinton also expressed confidence that US diplomatic efforts will survive the leak of the documents, whose authenticity she would not confirm. “I can tell you, in my conversations, at least one of my counterparts said to me, ‘Don’t worry about it; you should see what we say about you,’” Clinton said. “I would hope we would be able to move beyond this and back to the business of working together.” Clinton added, however, that “the United States deeply regrets the disclosure of any information that was intended to be confidential.”

Growing corruption mind-boggling: Supreme Court N ew Delhi: Taking note of the Niira Radia tapes issue, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said it is like some “matrimonial proceedings” while observing as “mindboggling” the malaise of corruption in the country. A bench comprising justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly made the observation while asking government’s response on the plea for preserving the tapes containing conversation between corporate lobbyist Radia and others in the 2G spectrum scam. “Not only are we talking about pollution of the Ganga for the past 2830 years... This pollution (corruption) is mind-boggling,” the court said after Prashant Bhushan. counsel for the petitioner, an NGO, spoke about the nexus between politicians, bureaucrats, industrialists and journalists as “exposed” in the tapes. Referring to the conversations between Radia and these people, the court said, “All this gives an indication that we are hearing some matrimonial proceedings.”

SC questions Thomas’ right to supervise CBI probe The court asked Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium to take instructions from the authorities on the plea made by the NGO, Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), for preservation of the controversial tapes. Bhushan appearing for the NGO had made the plea that the tapes prepared by the Director General of Income Tax

containing the recorded conversations of Radia and others should be kept intact as he apprehended it could be destroyed. Reading out purported extracts from the taped conversations, he said the CBI should be directed to place in a sealed cover the original copies of tapes and questioned the opposition against their disclosure by a noted industrialist -- an obvious reference to Ratan Tata who moved the apex court on Monday raising certain objections

over the leaks. He contended that Radia’s corporate communication company had employed former TRAI chairman Pradeep Baijal, who was lobbying in the government department on behalf of her PR firm as its CEO. The bench said that it would not like to name the gentleman who gave an “honourable” example of joining the PR firm after retirement, but sarcastically said, “by joining the firm, he has given an illustrious example”. Subramanium interrupted the Bench and said Baijal was a secretary-level IAS officer in the government and it was not known “under what circumstances he joined the PR firm of Radia”. The apex court also asked the government, whether the controversial firm Swan Telecom has fulfilled its roll-out obligations set by the Telcom Regulatory Authority of India, while allotting licenses. The government on Monday stated it would ask the Ministry of Corporate Affairs to investigate the allegation that Swan, which got licences and spectrum in 2008, acted as a front company of Anil Ambani-led RCom.

No surprise that Nitish is back in flourishing Bihar

N

ew Delhi/Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s win is no surprise for the people of Bihar. They had set their heart on bringing him back after witnessing a virtual metamorphosis of the state since 2005. There was a time when people used to lock themselves up in their homes after sunset. But now there is a buzz on the streets: People throng restaurants and markets with families beyond dusk. The unbelievable has happened in Nitish’s Bihar. His biggest challenge when he came to power was to bring normalcy to a state where everything seemed abnormal. He succeeded remarkably, winning the trust of people cutting across regional, religious and caste divide.

Custom Rickshaws (India) Hyper-texting kids more likely to is one of Top 5 customised smoke, booze: Study vehicles from around the world

L

ondon: A US study has found that hyper-texting, sending more than 120 texts a day, could be a sign that the child is more likely to smoke, booze and have sex. The study by the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, surveyed more than 4,000 American teens. It found that sending out scores of texts and frantic networking, more than three hours a day on Facebook or Bebo, were associated with risky behaviour. Dr Richard Graham, a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist, believes it is very difficult for adults to keep up with the technological world of teenagers - but that we have to learn to. “I see a lot of young people who are hyper-texting and hyper-networking - they simply can’t stop checking their phones or PCs and responding to

messages, even if they are unpleasant ones,” the Sun quoted him as saying. “Hyper-texters may just be more adventurous. Or they may be using their mobiles to arrange parties or meetings where they obtain alcohol or drugs, or meet a partner,” he stated. Dr Graham offered a few tips on how to curtail the usage of mobiles by children. “Make some boundaries about when and where they can use their mobiles for texts - encourage them to send fewer texts every day by setting a target number and reducing it by, say, ten a week,” he said. “Or follow the example of parents who keep a box at the bottom of the stairs and ask their children to drop off their handsets on the way up to bed,” he added.

No matter where you go in the world, vehicles play a major role in almost every aspect of our lives. Vehicle ownership is seen by most as an essential part of existence in the modern world. Whether for pleasure or economic necessity, just about all of us will want or need to own a vehicle at some point. Is it any wonder then that around the world, people have taken their vehicles and made them into works of art? What better way to show your love and appreciation for your vehicle than decorating it with love and care? Here the list of the top 5 customised vehicles from around the world. Custom Rickshaws (India) The only human-powered vehicles on the list, the custom rickshaws of India prove that just because your vehicle doesn’t have an engine, doesn’t mean you can’t trick it out. Although their use has largely faded in other parts of the world, rickshaws remain a common form of transportation in many cities in India and Bangladesh. Used as a cheap way to get around, rickshaws are an integral part of the transportation system. But what makes them great is the art. Covered in oil paintings that depict everything from movie stars

to products to political commentary, they reflect the owner’s opinions and feelings while giving other people on the road something very cool to look at. In the past, elites looked down

on the paintings as gauche examples of low-class culture, but recently artists and scholars have started to take them seriously as an art form. All this, and they’re environmentally friendly!

CBI inches closer to Kalmadi, searches aides Bhanot, Verma New Delhi: SThe CBI today registered a case of cheating against Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC) secretary-general Lalit Bhanot and director-general V K Verma for purchasing timing, scoring and result equipment from a Switzerland-based firm for an exorbitant Rs 107 crore. The officers are accused of manipulating tender provisions in such a way that only Swiss Timing Ltd qualified for the contract. The firm had supplied similar equipment for Melbourne 2006 for allegedly a fourth of what it charged the OC. CBI said 22 OC officials including chairman Suresh Kalmadi are under the scanner for the alleged irregularity. A number of Games officials have already been made a part of the investigation; more may be questioned soon, sources in the CBI said. Bhanot was put through detailed questioning and his home and OC office were searched. Verma’s premises were searched too, though he is in Kuala Lumpur and could not be questioned. No arrests have been made so far. CBI inches closer to Kalmadi, searches aides Bhanot, Verma

Here’s why Big B is the king of TV A

Nelson Mandela has released a new book on his life in which he urges the world not to view him as a saint, saying he has suffered “weaknesses, errors and indiscretions”.

mitabh Bachchan kept his tryst with super-stardom on his birthday on Monday. His quiz master avatar fetched Sony one of its highest TV ratings (TVRs) in recent times. Kaun Banega Crorepati-4 (KBC-4), hosted by Bachchan, got an average TVR of 5 on its opening day on Monday, according to data from TV rating agency aMap. The launch episode had a peak rating of 7.7, according to aMap. TVRs denote the percentage of viewers who watched the show for a stipulated period of time. The launch day ratings were better than those of Khatron ke Khiladi-3 and Bigg Boss-4, two other reality shows hosted by Bollywood stars on Colors, the rival general entertainment channel (GEC). According to aMap data, Khatron ke Khiladi-3, hosted by Priyanka Chopra [ Images ], and Bigg Boss-4 hosted by Salman Khan [ Images ], had got average TVRs of 2.4 and 3.6, respectively, on their launch days. Sony is gearing up to improve its position in the ratings chart, where it is presently placed at the fourth place behind STAR Plus, Colors and Zee TV, respectively. The launch day ratings of KBC-4 are encouraging for the channel, as the TVRs of the show have seen a

gradual decline over the years. During the first season in 2000, it had an average TVR of 14.1, a feat that has not been repeated on Indian TV. While the second edition notched an average TVR of 11.1, the third season, with Shah Rukh Khan [ Images ] as host, recorded an average of just 6.8, according to TV audience monitoring agency TAM. Since a show with a TVR of 5 is considered a hit today, due to the increase in the number of channels and viewership fragmentation, there is still steam left in it, say industry observers. On Monday, Bachchan’s magic seemed to work, as in the timeband that KBC-4 was on air, it was the highest rated show among the programmes of other Hindi GECs, includings STAR Plus, Colors, Zee TV and Imagine TV. “High opening day ratings were expected as the channel had a huge promotion and marketing budget for the show. The entire city has been painted red with hoardings of celebrity-driven shows.

However, it is to be seen whether the show manages to maintain the ratings during the entire period that it is on air,” said a Mumbai-based media planner, asking not to be named as his agency had bought ad spots for clients on the show. Huge sums of money are riding on these three shows, including Bigg Boss-4 and KBC-4. The channels have together forked our 100 crore just to get the celebrities to anchor the mega programmes. According to industry estimates, the three shows are expected to garner around Rs 270 crore of ad revenue -- nearly 10 per cent of the total revenues that Hindi GECs normally get in a year.

Kashmir Congress India is prospering minister in trouble but not Indians: over ‘azadi’ remarks Mani Shankar Aiyar

J

ammu, Dec 6 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma’s call for ‘aazadi’ for Kashmir has stunned the state government and the matter is likely to be taken up by the coordination panel of the ruling alliance partners, National Conference and Congress. Sharma, while speaking at a rally of the Congress party in a hilly and remote area of Bani in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, had said that the ‘people in the Valley want azadi, let them be given azadi; Ladakh should get the Union Territory status and Jammu statehood.’ His these remarks on Sunday left the coalition government completely rattled.

Despite repeated attempts to contact him Monday to explain what made him make the remarks, Sharma did not respond. On Sunday he had told some newspersons that he had ‘spoken in the interest of Jammu region’, which he alleged was the ‘worst victim of discrimination meted out to it by Kashmiris’. Sharma had addressed the rally in the presence of Pradesh Congress Committee president Saif-ud-din Soz. Sharma is a staunch loyalist of Soz who is trying to underplay the remarks. According to well informed sources in the Congress party, the minister’s remarks have been viewed ‘quite seriously’. Sharma would be asked to explain his remarks, the sources said. ‘This matter would also come up at the coordination panel of the two parties,’ an informed source in Congress told IANS. Sharma is the first ever minister in the government who has spoken of ‘azadi for Kashmir’. Reacting to his statement, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ashok Khajuria said that while the discrimination against Jammu region was a fact, but the ‘azadi for Kashmir’ demand was siding with the separatists. ‘The BJP will raise this issue at all levels, it also exposes the real intentions of the coalition government.’

He also criticised the procedure adopted by the government to define poverty line, alleging that it is “designed to pull wool over your eyes because it gives them easy way of describing how poverty alleviation is taking place when in fact it’s hardly, barely taking place”. He said GDP, per capita growth rates and national poverty line are the “three dangers facing the people of India”. He said GDP has emerged as the “real enemy of the Indian people” because the pursuit of “higher and yet higher GDP growth rates means an increasing squeezing out of national resources from areas where people needed to areas which will boost growth”.

N

ew Delhi, Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar today questioned the government’s inclusive economic growth story of India, saying “India is prospering but not Indians”. “India is prospering, Indians are not,” he said at a function after releasing a report on social development of India published by Oxford University Press. Aiyar cricitised the government for measuring economic growth on the basis of per capita income and Gross Domestic Product (GDP), saying that while 57 per cent of GDP is being “consumed” by about one per cent of the total population, per capita growth rate is a “wholly misleading index” of what is actually being attained in terms of progress by the people. “GDP growth rate is no index of what is happening in the our country. The per capita growth rate, derived from the GDP growth rate, is also a wholly, not inadequate, wholly misleading index of what is actually being attained in terms of progress by the people of India,” he said.

Only in India Aiyar pointed out that while the GDP growth rate has soared towards double figures “and possibily on a sustained basis”, rate of growth in agriculture of the country has remained at an average of about 1 to 2 per cent over the period of economic reforms. “The consequences--that as of now approximately 57 per cent of our GDP is being consumed by about one per cent of the total of our population, that population which finds itself in the IT and IT-related services sector along with government servants, armed forces personnel ....” He said that in manufacturing sector there is a “remarkable” record with the growth rate upto 14 -15 per cent per annum. But “curiously”, the share of labour in the organised sector is 8 per cent today, which is the same as at the start of the economic reforms process. “Which means in relative terms we have not been able to transfer labour from agriculture and unorganised small industry into organised major industry,” he said.

Christmas in India I

ndia celebrates almost all the festivals that are celebrated by all religions all over the world and we should take a leaf from their book. Christmas is celebrated with glee and gusto in true Indian style. Even though Christians form a minority community in India, it doesn’t dampen their spirits and Christmas and New Year is celebrated by believers and non-believers alike – complete with scenes of Nativity, Christmas puddings and even Christmas trees! Even though Christmas was originally celebrated by Romans as a Pagan festival dedicated to the Saturn and symbolizing the victory of light over darkness, it didn’t phase the Church when they decided to celebrate it at exactly the same time of the year in 345 AD. After all, the birth of Christ was just that – a celebration of light over darkness, wasn’t it? Due to the British colonization of India 300 years ago, the basic spirit is one of family traditions and celebrations and Christmas has become an inseparable part of the Indian culture. Indians are a joyous and beautiful people who need only the smallest reason to celebrate and Christmas seems to be as good a reason as any. For this reason large numbers of Indians decorate their homes with the glowing star and decorated Christmas trees – even carol singing and sending cards are part and parcel

of the lives of educated Indians. Gifts are exchanged, according to the depth of the pockets and Santa Claus brings gifts to a lot of good Indian children, just as he does around the Christian world!! The regions where the most Christians are found are in the north Eastern Hills and along the western and southern coastline of the country. Each one of these regions add their own cultural flavour to their faith Christianity evolves in new and fascinating was. The Goans, on the west coast, the Khasis, the Mizos and the Naga of the North East, the

orthodox Catholics, the Syrians and the Protestants of Kerala all add the essence of their native culture to celebrate Christmas in their own particular way. In far North Eastern Mizoram, Christmas is a community event and is known as Lengkhawn Zai – their Christmas carols are soft and signify spiritual joy rather than raucous feasting. Goa is the land of festivities and with a dominant Christian community, Christmas in Goa is a primary festival and the people of the region celebrate the day

with energy. The Christmas cuisine in Goa is unique and made specially for the Christmas festivities. The zest of Christmas here is reflected in the sweet puddings and elaborate meat and fish dishes and it’s the perfect time for tourists to sample the delicious Christmas cuisine. Most Christians who live in the plains use mango or banana trees as Christmas trees and mango leaves are used to decorate their homes – just like they do in some Hindu festivals. During the Christmas service, most churches are decorated

with poinsettias and candles because holly doesn’t grow in India – well, not really. In Southern India, little clay lamps are lit in homes and their wicks are twisted so that the flames last longer – these are often put on the roof to symbolize the fact the Jesus was the light of the world. Kerala, known as God’s own country is the centre of Christianity in India and has been ever since St Thomas concentrated his efforts there. Christmas lunch menus feature roasted duck and roasted pork and often even mince pies as well as stew and appams (pancakes made of a batter of rice flour and coconut milk). There is avial, in other south Indian states, murukku (a fried pretzel made of lentil and rice flour), and athirasam gracing the table alongside the Christmas pudding. Sweets like rose cookies, doughnuts and diamond cuts are usually home made like cookies in the western countries. On the 25th of December children in gaily coloured dresses are seen everywhere and Christians attend morning mass accompanied by drums and hymns. Santa Clauses in all shapes and sizes can be seen on the streets handing out sweets to the children everywhere. Gifts are exchanged, tips are handed out and many a Hindu couple ends up spending more on Christmas gifts to Continued …

Anniversary gift: Shilpa gets a home in Burj Khalifa

Shilpa Shetty spent her first wedding anniversary yesterday in Dubai with husband Raj Kundra at her new home on the ninetieth floor of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. Says a source close to the actress, “Shilpa was thrilled when Raj gifted her the luxury apartment. It’s his wedding anniversary gift to her. He gifted her the keys in Mumbai a week ago. She had visited Dubai a few months ago, had loved the

building and expressed a wish of staying there. The couple has taken a three-day break to celebrate their first wedding anniversary there. Raj also has something else planned for Shilpa a lavish dinner with a few surprises thrown in.” Shetty will design the interior of the apartment while she’s there. She then heads to Bangkok to shoot a shampoo ad on November 26. And to think, SS’s trip to Dubai almost never happened! She had an attack of pharyngitis on Saturday morning. She was to fly to Dubai on Sunday but had to postpone her trip by a day. The source adds, “Shilpa suddenly developed 103-degree temperature on Saturday night and a bad bout of pharyngitis. Though the fever waned by Sunday evening, her voice has gone (sic) completely. She was in much pain but they didn’t want to cancel their trip. Raj and Shilpa finally left yesterday morning.”

The Burj Khalifa

Burj Khalifa is a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and IS

the tallest man-made structure ever built, at 828 m with 160 floors. The top of the building features a public observation deck and shop. The world’s highest swimming pool is located on the 76th floor. The exterior cladding of reflective glazing is designed to withstand Dubai’s extreme summer temperatures. Burj Khalifa is home to 1, 044 luxury apartments, 49 floors of offices and eventually a 160-room Armanibranded hotel.

Apparently, Sameera loves driving but she also has a chauffeur for when she isn’t in the mood to battle traffic. But now with the new car, she insists on driving herself, making her driver insecure. He asked Sam’s dad whether his job was secure or not. Sameera says, “Being single has its perks! I love gifting myself stuff on Valentine’s Day and on my birthdays. Since my birthday is coming next month (December 14) I gifted myself the BMW. I wanted a bright blue and dad wanted a sober white so I chose to go with his decision.”

Tees Maar Khan Band Baaja Baraat

B

ig star cast, larger-than-life 70’s fictional characters, garish costumes, ostentatiously loud set-designs, racy music with munificent budget to bring them together in one package. This is Farah Khan’s world of cinema that has so far delivered two back-toback hits MAIN HOON NA (2004) and OM SHANTI OM (2007) with this formula and is back again with another edge-of-seat thriller with ‘tadka-mar-ke’ entertainment in TEES MAAR KHAN is a joyride that promises cheerful entertainment in its every soundtrack. Vishal-Shekhar’s music satiates

with amusing numbers with ‘qawwali’ being the flavor of the album in two of its scintillating looking soundtrack. As far as commercial viability is concerned, soundtracks like ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’ and ‘Tees Maar Khan’ are likely to be hot favorites and has already created buzz for the film. ‘Badey Dilwala’ is indeed a surprise package while ‘Wallah Re Wallah’ and ‘Happy Ending’ will be there to follow. After delivering out three musical hits in 2010, Vishal-Shekhar ends it with style and the added benefit of big star value, munificent promotion and

bankable concept will be there to catalyze commercial prospects of this album. Director : Farah Khan Music : Shirish Kunder, Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani Lyrics : Shirish Kunder, Vishal Dadlani and Anvita Dutt Guptan Starring : Akshay Kumar, Akshaye Khanna, Katrina Kaif, Raghu Ram, Rajiv Laxman and Arya Babbar Rating - 3.5/5

film with weddings as the backdrop. A young couple. North India. Yash Raj Films. Fun. Frolic. Colours. Celebrations. Band. Baaja. Baaraat. With elements like these, what else do you expect but a rollicking music score that doesn’t let the fun element drop down even for a single moment. Films belonging to similar genre, Dil Bole Hadippa and Badmaash Company, had music by Pritam. However this time around, YRF has entrusted composer duo of Salim-Sulaiman and lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya to do the needful. Do they deliver? Of course yes and in fact a lot more. It’s a Dev D kind of a start (hence reminding of Amit Trivedi’s style of composition) with ‘Ainvayi

Shahrukh Bola Khoobsuat Hai Tu

F

irst to arrive is the title track ‘Shahrukh Bola Khoobsurat Hai Tu’ which has Vasuda Sharma playing the double role of both the composer and the singer. A peppy outing that reminds of the kind of compositions that one heard in albums belonging to the genre of ‘Mast’ or some other youthful offerings of Ram Gopal Varma, ‘Shahrukh Bola Khoobsurat Hai Tu’ is a decent beginning to the album. Written by Makarand Deshpande, the song is about the central protagonist, a girl, who is happy about the compliment that she has received from Shah Rukh and how she has been at the top of the world ever since then. The mood changes soon after though with Jagjit Singh crooning ‘Bhool Jaana’. As expected, the song has a sad feel to it and is strictly for those who have been following such genre of songs coming from Jagjit

December 2010 Edition

Singh. A track about forgetting about the past and not allowing any memories to live in, ‘Bhool Jaana’ is written by Makarand Deshpande and makes on strongly believe that the song would only slow down the pace of the film. Surprisingly the song appears twice but that isn’t much reason to cheer again. Shahrukh Bola Khoobsurat Hai Tu hasn’t been designed as a musical and that tells on the songs that have been put together for the film. Except for the two versions of the title song, ‘Shahrukh Bola Khoobsurat Hai Tu’ and ‘Socha Na Tha’, there isn’t much that passes muster.

Ainvayi’. However, one minute into the song and you know that there is going to be no turning back for Salim-Sulaiman as they get the Punjabi milieu bang on for this club dance track that gets on you by the time you are just in the middle of the track, let alone finishing hearing the entire song. Salim Merchant and Sunidhi Chauhan are totally engrossed into the song as one can visualise them dancing and not just singing ‘Ainvayi Ainvayi’ which has chartbuster written all over it. Add to that some fun lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya and you know that you won’t have enough of this song even after you are through hearing its ‘Dilli Club Mix’ track that has Master Salim pairing up with Sunidhi Chauhan. Toyota Auris hybrid Technology here’s more on TV of 2010 e-car T

oyota has now whipped its Hybrid Synergy Drive tech out of the highly visible Prius and stuffed it into the altogether lower profile Auris hatchback. The drive train has been co-opted directly from the Prius, so you get the same 98bhp 1.8L Atkinson cycle petrol engine coupled with a CVT transmission with an 80bhp/153lb-ft (60kW/207Nm) electric motor and 13.1kWh nickel-metal hydride battery. In Power mode that combination will get you from 0-62 in 11.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 112mph. The largely irrelevant 0.9 seconds difference in the zero-to-sixty dash times between the Auris and Prius is presumably explained by a change in gearing, as both cars weigh exactly the same according to Toyota. Compared to an Alfa Romeo Giulietta or even a Ford Focus, the Auris looks are rather uninspired Economy is the raison d’être of the Auris Hybrid and Toyota reckon 74mpg is possible in Eco mode. The best I managed over a very careful 45 mile run was a shade below 68mpg. Drive like a twit and consumption drops into the low 50s. Over the course of a week, I averaged 62.6mpg which means the 45 litre fuel tank can get you 600 miles between fill-ups. The dashboard layout and instruments are, however, an improvement. While giving you the same information as the Prius’ hightech fascia, everything is simpler and more conventional and thus easier to understand. The funky blue drive selector is carried over from the Prius. Centre console detail is more intuitive The driving position is higher than in the Prius which is better for visibility but not so good for getting a feel of the road when making time. With less attention paid to a wind-cheating profile, the Auris is a lot easier to see out of through the rear window, which pays dividends when going backwards unaided by the optional - a Navigation Pack and reversing camera. Power flow information: The car’s humble origins do however show up on the open road. While everything is perfectly acceptable by c-segment standards, the Prius is definitely quieter, smoother and more refined. The CVTinduced trait of revs-before-action makes engine noise rather noticeable when pushing hard and startlingly the brakes are even more lifeless and abrupt than in the Prius, which makes gentle retardation an acquired art.

Truly synthetic organism created Back in May, scientists completed a 15 year quest to create the first selfreplicating, synthetic bacterial cell. The team led by Craig Venter of America’s J. Craig Venter Institute (JVCI) proved the principle that genomes can be designed in the computer, chemically made in the laboratory and transplanted into a recipient cell to produce a new self-replicating cell controlled only by the synthetic genome. The research could lead to engineered bacteria designed for specific purposes such as producing drugs, biofuels or other useful chemicals. Full story

Commercially available Jet Pack We’ve been waiting a long time for this one. Earlier this year New Zealand based Martin Aircraft announced the first commercially-available jet pack. The 250 lbs “Jetpack” (which uses twin ducted fans) is capable of 30 minutes of flight time, can reach heights of 8,000 feet and is fueled by regular premium gasoline. You can lay down a deposit on the expected US$86,000 price tag, but don’t expect to take delivery until next year. For those of us without that kind of cash lying around, there’s also a Jetpack adventure travel experience on offer for around $10K.

Howqua Hills Historic Area is a site of natural beauty where you can rediscover the days of gold mining and settlement in the area as you walk past historic relics from times gone by.

things to do: * Howqua Greenston. Outcrops of the oldest rocks in the alpine area can be seen along the river. Aborigines prized it for its hardness and used it for stone axes, spearheads and cutting tools. * Sheepyard Flat. Locals say that after the valley was settled, shepherds yarded sheep on the flat at night keeping the dingoes at bay. * Tunnel through Tunnel Spur. Built in 1884 to link the Howqua River and a water race, it is about 100 metres long. * Water race. Cut by hand in 1884 to carry water to the “Hanney” waterwheel, it is four kilometres long and can be seen above the road from Tunnel Spur to the chimney. * Brick chimney. Completed in 1884 and used as a smelting furnace. The waterwheel “Hanney” was erected nearby and powered by water from the race. “Hanney” was 63 feet (18 metres) in diameter and drove the crushers that broke the ore into a suitable size for gold extraction by roasting the chimney. * Fry’s Hut. Fred Fry built his home in the late 1930s. Fred’s life in the Howqua Valley was the basis of Neville Shute’s novel ‘The Far Country’, published in 1950. Overnight camping is not permitted in Fry’s Hut.

How to get there:

Access to Howqua Hills Historic Area is via Mansfield, 17 kilometres from Merrijig. Special Needs Access: Specific information about site conditions so you can judge a site’s accessibility according to your own needs. Sheepyard Flat: This is the most accessible of the camping grounds and picnic areas within the Historic Area. It is a bush camping site, with minimal infrastructure, but has a large and fairly flat grassy area for campers to use. The picnic tables, toilets and fireplaces do not have design features to improve accessibility. There is an information shelter next to one of the car parking areas.

Khelein Hum Jee J aa n S e y A

PVR Pictures Presentation of an Ashutosh Gowariker Productions’ film, KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY is directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced jointly by Ajay Bijli, Sanjeev K. Bijli and Sunita A. Gowariker. The film will hit theatres on December 3, 2010. The film stars Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Sikandar Kher, Vishakha Singh, Samrat Maninder, Feroz Wahid Khan,

Shreyas Pandit, Amin Gazi, Rohan Painter, Smit Seth, Palash Muchhal, Nitin Prabhat, Narendra Bindra, Paarth Mandal, Mohsin Khan, Aamir Khan, Abbas Khandwawala, Shubham Patekar, Gaurav Sethi, Aakash Joshi, Vikramjeet Virk, Jan Bostock Monty Munford, Francis Mathew, Paul Gatward, John Tassi, John Pollard, Robert Drury. The music of the film is composed by Sohail Sen, who has earlier worked on Ashutosh’s previous film WHAT’S YOUR RAASHEE? and the lyrics are penned by Javed Akhtar. A period thriller, the film is based on the book ‘DO and DIE: The Chittagong Uprising 1930-34’ by Manini Chatterjee

Synopis: 1930, British India: In the province of undivided Bengal lies the sleepy, peaceful port of Chittagong. In this unassuming little town a revolution is about to begin; a revolution which

won’t turn Katrina for Akshay Katrina Kaif may be scorching the screen by turning ‘Sheila’ for Akshay Kumar for their upcoming film together. However, Sonakshi Sinha won’t quite be following suit. Yes, she would be donning a glamorous avtar for her just announced film with Akshay. However, chances are near to nil that she would be following the footsteps of much senior Katrina as of now at least.

Director: Ashutosh Gowariker Starring : Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Vishakha Singh, Samrat Mukherji, Sikander Kher, Maninder Singh, Feroz Wahid Khan, Shreyas Pandit. will forever wake all of Chittagong and inspire the entire nation. April 18. 1 night. 5 simultaneous attacks. A band of 64 - 56 innocent yet fearless young boys, 5 defiant revolutionaries, 2 determined young women, and an idealistic leader - Surjya Sen, a school teacher by profession. This group of 64 represents a little-known chapter in history; a forgotten night that reigned terror on the British through a series of calculated attacks. KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY is a true story of these forgotten heroes and the narrative takes us through every step of the action from the initial trepidation, to the thrill of the attack, to the underground movement, daring escapes and tragic captures, and most importantly, their undying legacy.

Now that could well be a little disheartening for Sinha junior who had to silently watch Malaika Arora walk away with ‘seetis’ and ‘taalis’ as ‘Munni Badnaam’ [DABANGG]. Thankfully though, Sonakshi would be getting out of her ‘saree’ avtar in DABANGG and would be donning a much glamorous persona.

Priyanka Chopra is haunted by a ghost from her past!

Will Sonam be the next Kajol?

P

S

o n a m Kapoor’s only missing factor is her good luck. A glance at her previous films will show that she has all the makings of a good star. Having worked with ace filmmakers and lead actors, Sonam still has to pray for her good luck to support her. With some promising line up of films next calendar, Sonam Kapoor is being seen as the next big thing in bollywood. Some quarters have been already putting her at par with Kajol as far as her potential is concerned. So, will Sonam Kapoor be the next Kajol of B-Town? Well, Sonam does not deny the possibility. In fact she says that her co-star Abhishek and she will be the next hit Jodi in bollywood. In her own words, she adds, “I have a great chemistry with Abhishek and we have done

riyanka Chopra may be having sleepless nights in Berlin where she is presently shooting for Don 2. According to reports doing the rounds, the actress is being haunted by a ghost from her past. Well, not literally, but a certain Prakash Jaju has returned back to Priyanka Chopra’s life. For the uninitiated, Prakash Jaju was the actress’ secretary once upon a time. He was sacked by Priyanka Chopra when she caught him sending her lecherous text messages and was handed over to the police officials in Mumbai. But now that his arrest period is over, Prakash Jaju has resurfaced in Priyanka Chopra’s life. The ex-secretary is reportedly promoting the career of Meera Chopra, Priyanka Chopra’s distant cousin. And though the Bollywood actress is very disturbed over the fact, she cannot really do anything about it, because though the court orders Prakash Jaju to stay away from her family, nothing has been mentioned about her extended family in the legal notice. What comes across as more troubling news to Priyanka Chopra is the fact that Meera has gone on record saying that she does not find anything wrong in Prakash Jaju’s character and she is prepared to work with him because the man may

Katrina is cool about link-ups

K

atrina who is the demand of the industry now days, knows how to handle linkups and rumours. Seem like Katrina learnt about how to deal with then within a short career span. She has been linked up with many actors and the latest one was to Ranbir Kapoor from Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani. Recently when

asked to the actress about it, she said, “It’s just getting too much. You are linked to every actor you are working with. That happens for every movie these days and one just has to stop reacting to it.” Katz has her own fundas at work. And guess what? This might be the reason that the actress is one of the top actresses in Bollywood today.

mran and Deepika will be seen lip-locking in forthcoming movie ‘Break Ke Baad’, the actor says that a kissing scene is as difficult as a fighting scene and you really need to be chilled out for doing it. ‘Break Ke Baad’ will see Imran as ‘Abhay’ and Deepika as ‘Aaliyah’ and both will be seen sharing a relationship of 4 years, living under one roof. Imran adds further, “More than passion, it’s about the comfort level Abhay and Aaliyah share after having been in a relationship for a long time. And let me tell you, that kiss was as difficult as a fight scene. When I

have to punch someone, I’m told to be careful and not block out the light or cover the other person. The same instructions were given this time too.” He also talks about the required comfort levels and says, “The first thing I did after signing the film was buy some shorts and chappals and wear them around. And when you dress like this, your mindset changes. You become more chilled out.” ‘Break Ke Baad’ will be the first romantic kind of film for Imran Khan, after that he would be seen opposite to Katrina Kaif in the movie ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’.

Apparently, Khan feels that Rahul needs to shed his beefy look that doesn’t quite match his vulnerable face. The older actor also believes that an actioner would be the best launch vehicle for the Bhatt boy. Wouldn’t working in his own home production be a better deal? Our source avers, “Neither Bhatt Saab nor his son was comfortable with the idea. It’s just not in the boy’s personality to piggyride on his father’s name. He is fighting hard to shrug off the label of just being his father’s son.” According to a source, Rahul will be part of Arbaaz Khan’s Dabangg 2 as well. He chooses to play down his excitement at finally being launched and that too by Sallu.

“Yes, Salmanbhai is working on something for me. I trust him completely. He says action and emotion are my forte. I believe that. We’re both on the same page. And that’s a relief.” Ironically, producers have suddenly woken up to the youngster’s existence. Anurag Basu, who was once to launch

Rahul in a Vishesh Films production is now working Rahul into his next project. Sighs the newbie, “I’ve waited long enough. I went into Bigg Boss so people would see me as more than just the faceless son of Mahesh Bhatt. It worked.”

Ryan Reynolds named

“sexiest man alive” by People

Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, star of “The Proposal” and upcoming scifi movie “Green Lantern”, was named People magazine’s “sexiest man alive” . It was the first time that Reynolds, 34, made the list in the 25 years since People magazine started it annual “sexiest man alive” feature. Reynolds joins the ranks of previous winners such as Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. “Now it’s going to be, ‘Sexiest man, take out the garbage.’ That does sound better,” Reynolds said. “The most difficult part is going to be organically working this title into a conversation with random strangers.” He played a U.S. contractor working in Iraq who is buried alive inside a coffin in the small, independent movie “Buried” earlier this year. Reynolds will next be seen in the title role of superhero comics m o v i e “Green Lantern”, which is due to be released in June 2011.

Kohli was good with his shot selection: Gambhir

2010 India’s year on track and field as records fall, new stars rise

Guwahati: Leading the side for the first time, India captain Gautam Gambhir today lavished praise on centurion Virat Kohli for scripting a 40-run win over New Zealand in the first ODI, which also helped the hosts take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. “Virat batted exceptionally well today. After losing the toss, our plan was that someone needs to go and get a hundred and he did exactly the same. He was good with his shot selection. Overall, I am satisfied with

India’s flag-bearer, gold-medal winner Vijender Singh, at Asian Games closing ceremony on Saturday. PTI

the performance of the team,” said Gambhir, who also scored a quickfire 38 at the top to give the team a sound start. “Both batsmen and bowlers chipped in with useful contributions. R Ashwin bowled brilliantly, pacers Nehra and Sreesanth were equally good. Virat, Yuvraj and other batsmen were also good. We hope to continue the momentum in the fixtures ahead,” said the dashing opener. Asked about captaining the side in the absence of regular captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has been rested for the series ahead of the tough tour of South Africa starting next month, Gambhir said, “leading the side was a great feeling and I am

happy to start with a win.” Man of the Match Kohli, fresh from his back-to-back centuries in Ranji Trophy, struck a neat and chanceless 105, an innings which was laced with 10 boundaries. This was his second consecutive and fourth overall oneday ton. The Delhi-lad said he has brought some changes to his aggressive style of batting and is now concentrating more on the singles and twos. “It feels good to get a century. I just want to make the most of my outing. After the Sri Lanka series bad patch, I got enough backing from the team and coach to deliver the goods and, these days, I am more into analysing my game. “I am concentrating on holding one

end and let others do their bit. I am converting more singles and doubles these days. It’s good to score runs and help your team post a good total on the board,” he said. Meanwhile, New Zealand captain Ross Taylor said losing three-four wickets in the middle stage of the innings cost them the game. “Everything did not go right for us today. In the middle stage, we lost three-four wickets that made a lot of difference. It’s a disappointing result for us and we hope to pick up from here,” Taylor said. “We came pretty close in the end but overall efforts seemed to be little short. Virat batted well and took the game away from us. We hope to play better in the series ahead,” he added.

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly (R) and Bangladeshi cricket team captain Mashrafe-Bin-Murtaza attend the 100-day countdown program for the Cricket World Cup at Dhaka. The World Cup will start on February 19, 2011 with a match between India and Bangladesh. The opening ceremony of the World Cup will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh on February 17. India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka jointly host the 10th World Cup from February 19 to April 2.

December 2010 Edition

In winning five gold, two silver and four bronze at Guangzhou, Indian athletes blazed past nine personal bests and several season bests — capping an unprecedented year for Indian athletics that has already seen eight national records rewritten. What makes 2010 even more special is that it hasn’t been just the usual throwers and middledistance runners wrapped in Tricolour on the podium. The highs have come from sprints and longdistance races, involving both men

and women, marking the arrival of Indian athletes on the world stage. While India won more gold medals in athletics in the 2002 Busan Asiad, the fact that Guangzhou was their second noteworthy performance after the recently concluded Commonwealth Games has made people sit up and take notice. Korea’s Jae-Keun Chang, who won the 200 m Asiad gold at a packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in 1982, thinks that the giant is awakening.

Around 62 Indian cricketers will be up for auction for the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the legendary Sachin Tendulkar in the top-bracket of cricketers valued at Rs 1.84 crore.

Insomnia Ayurvedic treatment HAY FEVER: RELIEF FROM AYURVEDA

>> Dr. C.R.S. Kumar

Do you dread summer as the season of itching eyes and a streaming nose? Here are some answers from Ayurvedic Medicine on relief from Hay fever symptoms. Hay fever is the common name for a condition called allergic rhinitis, which means an allergy that affects the nose. Most people associate hay fever with spring, when airborne pollens from grasses are at their peak. However, hay fever can occur at any time of the year. This is known as perennial allergic rhinitis, which is usually caused by a reaction to allergens around the home such as dust mites, moulds or animal hair or fur.

Reason and Symptoms: Ayurveda sees Ama (toxins) and low immunity as the primary causes of most allergies. Ama can settle at the digestive level or in the various tissues, with different symptoms at each level. Ama toxicity aggravates blood and Pitta, or it can aggravate Kapha, with different symptoms. In Ayurveda hay fever is related to a Kapha-Pitta disorder; however, people with a Vata constitution suffer most from it, because it is also due to immune disorder and hypersensitivity of the nervous system. Whereas, conventional medicine treats it as a allergic rhinitis with the symptoms of • Sneezing • A runny or stuffy nose • Itchy ears, nose and throat

• Red, itchy or watery eyes • Headaches. In some cases, the symptoms of hay fever can be so severe that a person can’t sleep or concentrate, and may feel tired or unwell. In Ayurveda symptoms may vary from person to person and it is based on individual constitution (Prkriti).

Treatment: In Modern Medicine the treatment is mainly depends on symptoms by administrating corticosteroids, Anti Histamines, Eye drops or antibiotics or immunotherapy. Whereas in Ayurvedic treatment it only treats the symptoms but also treat the root causes.

Mainly Ayurveda concentrates on Diet, advises to avoid heavy foods, cold drinks, and dairy products (including cheese and yogurt), that increase Kapha and decrease digestive fire. Also, follow diets that rebalance your own pattern of doshic imbalance. Lifestyle advise to practice regular pranayam (Anuloma and Viloma) in order to avoid the Hay fever or Upper respiratory tract infections and also to promote the lung capacity. The drug therapy in Ayurveda or the Science of Life has answers for respiratory allergic disorders. There are many preparations explained in the text books of Ayurveda and found to be useful in the management of allergic respiratory disorders. Herbs like Haridra (Turmeric) , Tulasi (Holy Basil) and Adulasa (Vasaka) are widely used in treating such disorders. The antiinflammatory properties of Haridra help in effectively combating allergies, Tulasi

helps promote optimum respiratory comfort by reducing the symptoms of allergy, while Vasaka normalizes the lung function. Mainly Panchakarma therapy (Nasya Karma ) is proven very effective in the prevention of Allergies. In Nasya Karma the drug (herbalized oils and liquid medicines) is administered through the nostrils. Since nose is the gateway of the head, the therapy is highly effective in curing a number of diseases pertaining to the head, if it is performed systematically. The therapy cleanses and opens the channels of the head, thereby improving the process of oxygenation (prana), which has a direct influence on the functioning of brain. The therapy is beneficial if done on a regular basis, because it keeps the eyes, nose and ear healthy. You may ask your personal query to Dr Kumar via Email drsathi@aurahealth. com.au or by phone 0402 282 745 regarding any of your health problems. You will be offered authentic Ayurvedic information and an opinion, as to what best can be done pertaining to your ailment. 10 tips to keep your healthy habits intact during holidays

D

reading the holiday season, as it would crash your plans to maintain a healthy diet? Well, you don’t have to worry, for an expert has come up with a few tips to help you keep healthy habits intact during this time of the year. “Attitude and commitment are so important to eating healthy any time of year,” said Brittany Glassett, registered dietician at Porter Adventist Hospital. “There is no need to deny yourself all ‘treats’ this time of year, but if you are mindful of what you are eating and practicing moderation, then you can be successful in your weight management goals - and know that you are sticking with your healthy habits,” said Glassett. Here’s is the 10 tips for healthy eating during the holidays:

1. No skipping meals. The old adage rings true - always eat breakfast. Eat small, frequent meals and healthy snacks during the day to help avoid overeating at holiday parties. 2. If you overindulge at one meal, don’t stress about it just get back on track with your next meal. 3. Don’t drink your calories! Monitor alcohol and soda consumption. Both are high in calories. Try alternating water with alcoholic beverages. 4. Substitute - yogurt for cream, sour cream and mayonnaise, and substitute herbs and spices for salt and

Playing in the Mud and Eating Dirt Could Actually Make Your Kids Smarter

H

ere’s some good news for parents who constantly worry about their kids’ hygiene after they spend time in the play ground - eating dirt could actually make your child smarter. A new study has shown the positive side of soil-borne bacteria that is likely to be inhaled when children are playing outside. S c i e n t i s t s discovered that mice that were fed the dirt bacteria Mycobacterium vaccae navigated complex mazes twice as fast as those which were not. Another reason kids should be encouraged to get outside and get dirty. “Over the past few years terms like ‘cotton wool kids’ and

December 2010 Edition

‘helicopter parents’ are becoming really common,” the Courier Mail quoted Fraser as saying. “So we thought it was time to air

the laundry on what’s happening with our play spaces and make sure we are offering kids challenges. “We need to make playgrounds safe, but also offer a certain amount of risk and controlled risk. It’s a real balancing act.” It is believed the bacteria increases levels of serotonin, reduces anxiety and may also stimulate growth in certain neurons in the brain. Fraser said that while playing in the dirt was great, parents should take care around potting mix, which can contain harmful bacteria. “But as long as safety directions are followed, that can be a great learning experience, too,” she said.

fats. You can also add strained apple sauce instead of butter or cooking oil when baking. 5. Eat smaller portions or use a smaller plate. Share a piece of pie and don’t go back for seconds. 6. Pace, don’t race. Eat your food slowly. If you eat too fast your stomach won’t have time to register that it is full. Savour each bite. 7. Skip the appetisers - or bring your own healthy appetizer to a gathering. Nibble on raw vegetables, low fat dips and salsa. 8. Don’t loiter in the same room as the food. Focus your attention

on the company, rather than the buffet or the bar. 9. Trim back the trimmings. Dressings and side dishes are typically high in calories. Eat turkey without the skin, make gravy with little or no fat and use lighter dressings. 10. Make sure you get regular exercise throughout the holidays. It helps you maintain your weight and decreases your stress. Get the family together for a walk after dinner or get to the gym in the mornings before the holiday activities begin. Better yet, sign up to run (or walk) a Turkey Trot or other event. Finally, don’t deny yourself, said Glassett. Have a tiny taste of those things you really enjoy, but the key word is taste.

Why alcohol might be good for your heart Scientists have discovered that a well-known molecule called Notch may be behind alcohol’s beneficial effects. The finding could help scientists to create a new treatment for heart disease that mimics the beneficial influence of modest alcohol consumption. “Any understanding of a socially acceptable, modifiable activity that many people engage in, like drinking, is useful as we continue to search for new ways to improve health,” said Eileen M Redmond at the University of Rochester Medical Centre. “If we can figure out at the basic science level how alcohol is beneficial, it wouldn’t translate to doctors prescribing people to drink, but hopefully will lead to the development of a new therapy for the millions

of people with coronary heart disease,” she said. The study, conducted in mince, revealed that moderate levels of consumption -generally considered one to three drinks per diem -inhibits Notch, and subsequently prevents the build-up of smooth muscle cells in blood vessels, which contributes to narrowing of the arteries and can lead to a heart attack or stroke. “Now that we have identified Notch as a cell-signalling pathway regulated by alcohol, we are going to delve deeper into the nuts and bolts of the process to try to find out exactly how alcohol inhibits Notch in smooth muscle cells,” said David Morrow, an instructor in the department of surgery at the medical centre.

NUTRITION AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT Homeopathic Help >> Raj Kothuru the mother‘s pre natal health determines the course of the child’s health and well being. Hence the emphasis that a woman has to eat not only for herself but also for all her future generations.

What is Nutrition? Nutrition is the supply of food required by organisms and cells to stay alive. It is the science or practice of consuming and utilizing foods for growth and sustenance. A nutrient is a source of nourishment, an ingredient in a food, e.g. protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamin, mineral, fiber and water. It is the maintenance of this balance of these nutrients in our food that determines our health and well being. Macronutrients are nutrients we need in relatively large quantities. Micronutrients are nutrients we need in relatively small quantities.

Nutrition for Children: The nutritional needs of children and adolescents are different from those of adults because children are growing and developing. Keeping children healthy is every parent’s dream. Proper nutrition will help ensure your child’s normal growth and development, from the very important first few months through the teenage years. Nutrition starts at infancy. Infact the foundations of the child’s health are laid during pregnancy. Even

Providing a child with all the required nutrients is not an easy job and every parent knows this. Factors such as quality of food, food availability, food culture, pollution, eating habits etc influence nutrition. The older a child gets, the harder it becomes to change or reestablish eating patterns and habits. Hence, it is important to establish good eating habits from a young age. Understanding the value of and adapting a well balanced diet at an early age has life long benefits.

Why is nutrition so important in children? Infants and children are more likely to suffer from poor nutrition than compared to adults. The reasons are: • Low Nutritional Stores: Newborn infants have low stores of fat and protein. The smaller your child, the less reserves of energy they have. • High Nutritional Demands For Growth: The amount of nutrition children require is greatest during infancy. This is because of their rapid growth during this period. When your child is 4 months old, 30% of their nutritional intake is used for

growth. By the age of 1 year, this falls to 5%. • Rapid Development in the Nervous System: Your child’s brain grows rapidly during the last four months of pregnancy and also during the first two years of life. Good nutrition is important to ensure that this occurs properly. • Support during Illness: Your child’s nutrition may be compromised following an episode of illness or surgery. The body’s energy requirements are increased, thus intake of food and nutrients should be increased.

What Can Parents Do? • Teach kids, the value of food, need to avoid high fats, importance of fibre, calcium, iron and other vitamins and minerals in the diet. • Encourage the consumption whole and natural foods.

• Breast feed. Research has found that breastfeeding for longer than 6 months may have the additional benefit of preventing kids from being picky eaters. • Offer your toddler lots of different types of foods and let them see you eat and enjoy a variety of foods, especially fruits and vegetables. • Once infants start eating table food, parent’s eating habits will form a big

influence on what they would like to eat.

their child along the process of good nutrition to the body.

• Children’s food preferences and food-intake patterns are shaped largely by parent’s food preferences, the foods parents make available to children and persistence in re-presenting foods that are rejected.

Homeopathy for Healthy Body:

• Getting the child involved in shopping for groceries, in the way of picking fruit and veges, getting them to actively participate in the meal preparation process, effectively camouflaging vegetables etc into interesting foods such as pizza, pasta etc, getting children to collect receipies, starting a vege patch at home where a weekend activity involving children is planned.... all these are ways in which parents can educate

Along with a regular, and ample supply of good nutrition to the child, Homeopathic tissue salts provide the essential required minerals in accurate and acceptable dosages to the child’s system, thus making up for any fall backs in the minimum requirements. Homeopathy acts as the natural trigger to enable the child’s body to identify hormonal, mineral, and nutrient imbalances and deficiencies and stimulate to increase the body’s assimilation capability of nutrients easily without any side effects. Homeopathy, taken along with the right nutrition, will make the “healthy child, healthy adult, healthy society” dream, a reality.
