February February is the second month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. It is the shortest month and the only month with fewer than 30 days. The month has 29 days in leap years, when the year number is divisible by four (except for years that are divisible by 100 and not by 400 in the Gregorian calendar). In common years the month has 28 days. In the Southern Hemisphere, February is the seasonal equivalent of August in the Northern Hemisphere. February starts on the same day of the week as March and November in common years, and on the same day of the week as August in leap years. February ends on the same day of the week as October every year and January in common years only.

NRI honeymoon murder suspect misses court due to acute stress L
ondon: NRI businessman Shrien Dewani, accused of plotting the murder of his IndoSwedish wife on their honeymoon, was too ill to attend a court hearing here on his extradition to South Africa, his lawyer said today. Dewani, who is allegedly suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder and clinical depression, did not attend the brief hearing at Woolwich Crown Court in south east London today. The date for the next hearing was set for March 23 at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court, which Dewani will be required to attend. Dewani is accused of plotting to have his wife, Anni, 28, who was killed in a Cape Town township last November was due to appear at Belmarsh Magistrates this morning for a second extradition hearing. One of the gunmen accused of killing honeymoon bride Anni Dewani has also cast doubt on police claims that her husband Shrien plotted the murder. Mziwamadoda Qwabe told police that, rather than being a planned hit, there was never any intention that she should die. Vinod Hindocha, father of murdered honeymoon bride has claimed her husband was pretending
to be ill to avoid Tuesday’s extradition hearing. According to the Daily Mail, Hindocha told a South African newspaper that “sources” had seen Shrien out at restaurants, undermining the claim by PR Max Clifford’s that he is too ill to attend court. Honeymoon murder: ‘Rape was never part of plan’ “When you can go to restaurants to have meals, you can’t be sick. Many sources have told me they’ve seen Shrien out in restaurants, which means he can go to court,” Hindocha was quoted as saying by CapeTimes newspaper. South African authorities want the Bristol businessman sent back to the country to answer charges that he paid 1,300 pounds to hitmen to have his new bride killed. A three-day extradition hearing will take place from May 3 to 5, determining whether Dewani will be forced to return to the country where his wife was killed. Dewani vehemently denies the charge. Shrien and Annia Dewani celebrating on their wedding day before Anni was shot dead less than two weeks later on the honeymoon in Cape Town Tongo was sentenced to 18 years for his part in the murder
on November 13 while two other men face the same charges later this month. Lawyers for Dewani will question whether he would receive a fair trial if extradited to South Africa for the alleged murder of his wife, the court heard today.
Ben Watson, representing the South African authorities, said they had been notified of the issues the defence intended to raise in the fight against Dewani’s extradition. As well as questioning whether he would receive a fair trial, the businessman’s lawyers will also bring
up prison conditions in South Africa and Dewani’s physical and mental condition. Shrien also failed to appear at Westminster court on January 20, citing symptoms of acute stress disorder.

‘Bring Priyanka forward if you want to form govt in UP’
A
methi: Counter Mayawati with Priyanka – this was apparently the suggestion by a Congress activist to Rahul Gandhi after he declared that the party was aiming at forming a government in Uttar Pradesh. “Agar aap UP mein sarkar banana chahate hai to Priyanka ko age kyon nahi late (if you want to form the government in UP, why don’t you bring Priyanka Gandhi forward),” Congress activist Sonu Singh stood up and asked as Rahul concluded his speech during a function at Raiphulwari. The AICC general secretary evaded the question and said he would discuss it later with him. Rahul’s sister Priyanka, a mother of two, has stayed away from politics restricting herself to campaigning for her brother and mother Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. Addressing the villagers, Rahul accused Chief Minister Mayawati of stifling central schemes in the state and said that Congress can ensure development only after it comes into power in Uttar Pradesh.
Police leave Kashmir hospital after public outcry
J
ammu, (IANS) A police outpost has been removed from a hospital in the Jammu and Kashmir town of Sopore after an outcry from locals despite Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s initial reluctance, official sources said. The government asked police to ‘vacate’ the premises of Maternity and Child Care Hospital Monday night, following which the security personnel left the premises, the sources said. The decision came after people started protesting police presence in the hospital premises. The police post was set up in the hospital Saturday to keep the premises safe from militants. Initially, Abdullah resisted but later he relented and agreed to withdraw the police post. The hospital premises were considered vulnerable to militant movement and the rebels were suspected to be directing attacks from there, the sources said. There were attacks on the house of former Pradesh Congress Committee president Ghulam Rasool Kar and two teenaged sisters were killed in the same town by militants.

Mittal regrets slow progress Sonam: on India projects If dad can, so can I
N
ew Delhi: Peeved at slow progress of Rs 1.30 lakh crore India projects, ArcelorMittal chief L N Mittal today regretted that none of the company’s projects could reach even a stage like Posco, which secured environmental nod recently for its USD 12 billion plant in Orrisa. Mittal, who heads the world’s largest steel maker ArcelorMittal, said it was difficult to predict when any of the projects would take off and also expressed apprehensions on clearance to South Korean steel major saying the company was watching closely whether POSCO “clearance is a clearance”. “We are as anxious as anyone else that we should make progress in our Indian projects. We have not reached to the stage like Posco where they have got some environment clearance. They have got it with lot of conditions and we are still to see that the clearance is a clearance or still lot of steps need to take it forward,” he said soon after announcing fourth quarter results. The Environment Ministry granted clearance for South Korean major Posco’s USD 12 billion steel mill and captive port project in

Orissa after putting it on hold for several years. ArcelorMittal had announced plans to set up 12 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) plants each in Jharkhand in 2005 and in Orissa a year later. In June 2010, it inked a pact with Karnataka government for a 6 MTPA plant at an investment of Rs 30,000 crore. However, none of the projects could take off due to regulatory and other hurdles like problems in land
acqusition, raw material security etc. It had to shift the site of the proposed project to Bokaro in Jharkhand from KhuntiGumla, faced with land acquisition problems. “Progress is slow ... Lot of efforts are being made by our office in India. We are continuously making small steps forward. We cannot predict when can we start production... we cannot predict when we will have the first steel plant commissioned,” Mittal said addressing a press conference at Luxembourg. Last year he had said that the company expects to start work on one of its India projects in early 2011. Earlier last year he had made stinging remarks that India was not prepared for mega investments. “We blame the whole country for this because we did not experience this kind of growth, we did not experience this kind of interest in investments in India,” Mittal had said, adding that neither the Centre nor the states were prepared for this kind of investment in the steel industry.
If Anil Kapoor is getting ready to shoot for his next high-voltage action sequence in Tezz, then Sonam Kapoor is not behind with a few action films in her kitty. She has signed Players, which is being directed by Abbas Mastan that has some highvoltage action scenes choreographed by Allan Amin. It is not only the guys Abhishek Bachchan, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Bobby Deal who will be doing the stunts. When asked Sonam Kapoor about this she admits, “I am in Goa shooting for Players. I have been training in pilates for some time and doing it because I love it.” The director says, “Players is an action thriller and the girls Bipasha and Sonam will be doing lots of stunning car chases and other action sequences.”

ANGALORE: Boeing said it has a robust order book of 107 commercial planes in India. Out of this, 37 is for the 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The company did not specify the delivery timeline for the aircraft. However, the company will deliver the first of the 787 Dreamliner aircraft to Air India this year and the date of delivery will be formally announced at the Aero India show that begins in Bangalore on Wednesday. A miffed Air India had slapped a fine of $850 million for delay in the delivery.
The company is betting big on India’s defence market, estimated at $31 billion over the next ten years. “Fighter and attack aircraft, missiles and maritime patrol are a big component of this addressable market,” Boeing India president Dinesh Keskar said. In addition to offering the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet as part of the medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) offering, Boeing is exploring opportunities to bring C-17 Globemaster III, Apache, Chinook and P-81 to India. The Seattle-based company
predicts 15% annual passenger growth in the country over the next 5 years. “Indian air carriers turning profitable, growth of tier 2 and 3 airports and India becoming a key military spender are the growth drivers,” Keskar said. But he raised concerns about spiralling fuel prices and inflation that could be a dampener. “If the fuel price goes up to $110, we are going to have a situation where airlines will have to increase prices. If prices go up, the growth may come down from 15% to 12%,” Keskar added.

‘Eighth wonder of the world’ New Zealand’s Pink Terraces found WASHINGTON: Scientists have rediscovered what they claim is the eighth wonder of the world -- Pink and White Terraces in New Zealand, which were buried in mud for a 100 years, losing some charm. Until the late 19th century, the Pink and White Terraces along Lake Rotomahana on the North Island, attracted tourists from around the world, interested in seeing beautiful natural formations created by a large geothermal system. But the eruption of Mt Tarawera on June 10, 1886, buried the terraces in sediment and caused the lake basin to enlarge, engulfing the land where the terraces stood. For more than a century, people have speculated whether any part of the Pink and White Terraces survived the eruption. Now, an international team has located portions of the long-lost Pink and White Terraces, using autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to map the bottom of Lake Rotomahana. Team leader Cornel de Ronde of GNS Science in New Zealand said the scientists were elated by the rediscovery.
Prostitution should be legalised: Priya Dutt “The first sidescan sonar image gave a hint of a terraced structure so we scanned the area twice more and we are now 95 per cent certain we are seeing the bottom two tiers of the Pink Terraces,” de Ronde said. Side-scan sonar and bathymetric data collected by two REMUS 100 AUVs clearly show crescentshaped terraced structures in about 60 meters of water where the Pink
Terraces were located prior to 1886; they are covered by a brownish lake sediment, say the scientists. After detecting areas of interest with the AUV’s sonar systems, the team used the underwater camera system to capture images of the lake floor where they were able to photograph some of the stepped terrace edges.

Ruckus in Kerala assembly over Ice-cream parlour sex scandal
T
Preity tries to break the world record, but fails Preity Zinta has finally taken a first step towards her television debut. She has started shooting for the promos of Guinness World Records - Ab India Todega, the show that she will be hosting on Colors Channel. The actress tried to break an international record at Film City herself! In a promo video while pulling a truck she says, “Australia ka Derek Boyer ka Guinness World Record aaj main toodoongi.” Later she stated, “Chaliye main naa kar saki toh kya hua? India kar ke dikhadega. Ab garv se har Hindustani bolega, Guinness World record, Ab India Todega.”This is a desi version of the international show, produced by Miditech and will be aired later this year.
hiruvananthapuram: Kerala assembly today witnessed ruckus over the ice-cream parlour sex scandal allegedly involving IUML leader P K Kunhalikutty with members of ruling LDF and IUMl,a partner in congress led UDF Opposition engaging in heated arguments and coming near to blows leading to adjournment of the house for 25 minutes. The political heat generated in Kerala politics over the recent disclosure that alleged attempts had been made to scuttle the original case had its echo in the assembly when CPI-M member P K Shyalaja through a calling attention wanted the government to re-open the case and punish the guilty. Remark of Shyalaja that guilt of Kunhalikutty had been proved angered the IUML members who said that Kunhalikuty was not even an accused in the case and Shayalaja was making ‘untrue’ statements in the house. CPI-M member V Sivankutty, who was siting next to Shyalaja, moved towards one of the IUML member Abdurahiman Randathani who was strongly disrupting the speech of Shyalaja. However, a timely intervention of State Minister for Ports P Surendran Pilla averted a virtual blow between the members, as other members sitting nearby also joined them.
With tension mounting in the assembly,Speaker K Radhakrishan adjounred the house and called the floor leaders of the coalitation parties for a discussion. When house re-assembled after the short recess Radhakrishnan asked members to observe discipline and said it was not a good practice for members to move from their seats and rush towards the seat of other members. He also said reference on Kunhalikuty that his guilt had been proved would be removed from the assembly records. Later, replying to the calling attention, State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that a Special police team had been set up to probe into the revelations of K A Rauf, a close relative of Kunhalikuty, that he on behalf of the latter had
influenced the judiciary and also the witnesses in the case to keep Kunhalikuty out of the case. Allegation that two judges of the Kerala high court had been bribed to get orders in favour of Kunhalikutty would be brought to the notice of high court, he said adding it was for the high court to examine that aspect. Certain matters under prevention of corruption act had also come out against Kunhalikuty, he said adding Vigilance Porbe would be ordered into the aspects connected with Prevention of Corruption Act. The India Vision Television channel that telecast the statements of Rouf through a sting operation had been asked to submit all related CDs to take further action in the case, he added.

New Nepal PM fails to name cabinet K
ATHMANDU: Five days after deserting his old allies and forging a secret pact with the opposition Maoists to win the controversial prime ministerial election, Nepal’s new premier Jhala Nath Khanal failed to name his cabinet even on Tuesday, casting fresh doubts on his ability to conclude the peace process successfully within the remaining 110 days. The 61-year-old communist leader, who abandoned his party’s ally, the Nepali Congress, to become prime minister with the support of the Maoists, is now being asked to pay his pound of flesh by the former guerrillas, who are eying major ministries. The Maoists have staked claim to the foreign affairs, home and information and communications ministries and Khanal’s party’s refusal to concede all three has resulted in another deadlock. The top leaders of the two parties resumed negotiations Tuesday to reach an understanding on power-sharing but, keeping true to Nepal’s history of endless strife, the talks broke down without any agreement. Due to the PM’s inability to name his cabinet, parliament has not been able to sit and even the Maoists’ standing committee, which was to meet Tuesday to discuss how to metamorphose their guerrilla army into state security forces, had to be put off. So far, Khanal’s activities have been to take part in an elaborate Hindu worship ritual before shifting into Baluwatar, the official residence of the prime minister, to appease the gods. For more than a decade, no Nepal premier has been able to last
Nepal’s new premier Jhala Nath Khanal full term, giving rise to doubts about the auspiciousness of the official residence. On Tuesday too, the cabinet-less PM frittered away more time attending a Hindu programme to officially welcome spring. While the communist PM sends up prayers to the divine powers, his government is running out of time rapidly. Only 110 days remain for getting the new constitution ready and if the power tussle is not resolved soon, it will be certain that the Khanal government will not be able to deliver. There are already reports
that the secret pact he signed with the Maoists will lead to his resigning before May 28, the constitutional deadline. His party will then support Maoist chief Prachanda to become the neext PM. The fact that both sides have admitted to the existence of a secret pact clearly indicates they both know, for all their posturing, that they will fail the nation yet again. The talks therefore are no longer about the constitution -- that was the mandate of the election -- but about seizing power and hanging on to it.

High Court fixes Feb 21 to deliver Kasab verdict M
UMBAI: The Bombay high court on Monday said it would pronounce the verdict in the 26/11 case and decide the fate of Pakistani gunman Ajmal Amir Kasab on February 21. A division bench of justices Ranjana Desai and R V More asked Kasab’s lawyers to inform him to remain present through video conference on judgment day. The court made it clear that the verdict won’t wait for Kasab (who has boycotted the proceedings) to make an appearance. “If he doesn’t want (to remain present for the hearing), we cannot force him, the judges said. The state arranged for Kasab to attend court hearings in his high security Arthur Road prison cell through video conference. Kasab stopped attending the hearings when the court, citing security reasons, dismissed his application to remain personally present. The judges said that voluminous records are the reason why the verdict was taking time. “The paperwork is immense. We don’t want to give a hurried judgment. But the hearing was wrapped up in record time. The court commenced it in October 2010 and worked on a day-to-day basis. “Considering the sensitive nature of the case and the amount of records, the appeals

and the confirmation case will be completed in a span of four months, said special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who appeared, along with additional public prosecutor Shahaji Shinde, for the state government. The court’s legal aid department appointed lawyers Amin Solkar and Farhana Shah to represent Kasab. Solkar sought postponement of the verdict by a week, saying he would be abroad during that period. But the court declined his request, refusing
to delay the judgment. “Make some adjustments, the judges told Solkar. The judgment will have two aspects: whether to confirm the special court’s death sentence awarded to Kasab for his role in the 26/11 terror attack case; and whether to allow the state to challenge the special court’s order acquitting Kasab’s co-accused Faheem Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed, who were let off for lack of evidence.

omen activists Monday expressed shock at the attack on a Dalit minor whose ear was nearly chopped off and fingers smashed after she resisted gangrape, saying girls were not safe in Uttar Pradesh and the situation was going from bad to worse. Girija Vyas, chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), said: “Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of rape and adduction cases in the country and there is no justice delivered. There is police inaction and there have been instances when innocent victims land behind bars.” “It’s a bad situation and no case is being referred to fast track courts,” she added. The teenaged Dalit girl was subjected to a brutal attack late Saturday and her ear was nearly chopped off while resisting a rape attempt by three youths of her village in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur district, police said Sunday. One man has been arrested. The teenager was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon. Ranjana Kumari, chairperson of the Centre for Social Research, said: “Girls are not safe in Uttar Pradesh. Just a week back we came to know that a 17-year-old Dalit girl was gangraped and murdered on the outskirts of Lucknow and now there

No cameo Irrfan is The main villain in
W
ith two major projects in Hollywood, three Hindi films ready for release this and next month, and two other Hindi films awaiting his attention for completion, Irrfan Khan is currently into the busiest year of his life.
The actor needs serious time-management manoeuvres. Proof? On Sunday there was panic at the Mumbai airport when Irrfan Khan who was supposed
Spiderman 4 to leave for Lucknow with his director Sudhir Mishra and co-stars Chitrangda Singh and Arunodoy Singh failed to turn up. Apparently Irrfan was untraceable, and the team had to fly out to Lucknow without him. Explains Mishra, “Irrfan
was supposed return from Los Angeles and immediately join us for our flight to Lucknow. But his flight got delayed. He had no choice but to miss Lucknow although it’s a city he loves
dearly. He very badly wanted to come with us. ” If Irrfan Khan has been conspicuous by his absence from recent publicity events for his new film Yeh Saali Zindagi it is with good reason. Irrfan had to leave for a week-long shooting in LA of Spiderman. Though Irrfan is not allowed to talk about his role in Spiderman a source reveals that the actor plays the main villain. “It’s not a cameo that our actors play in Hollywood biggies and come back bragging about. Irrfan has a full-fledged role in Spiderman. After shooting in LA he also has to do Ang Lee’s Life Of Pi in Taiwan, Pondicherry and Canada. This year he will be shooting extensively in New York and Taiwan when he’s needed in India for the promotion of three back-to-back films. After Yeh Saali Zindagi there is Anees Bazmi’s Thank You and Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Pan Singh Tomar. ” The question is, how? How will Irrfan balance two continents and six films in one year? Irrfan Khan admits he is in a time-management crisis, “I’m going through a very hectic time. And I find it hard to cope.

bollywood music Music Review :
T
o inculcate new genre or unconventional style of filmmaking in commercial mainstream of Bollywood is indeed a herculean effort. There are filmmakers like Vishal Bharadwaj, who dared to swim against the tide and has succeeded in delivering it. 7 KHOON MAAF (inspired from Ruskin Bond’s story Susanne’s Seven Husbands) is one such effort that is not only realistically black but experimentally narrative. It pitches talented Priyanka Chopra in seven different avatars with seven male lead actors. If music of OMKARA and KAMINEY was sufficient enough to excite your senses, then do expect 7 KHOON MAAF to be next big
7 Khoon Maaf thing on charts. Expectations- yes there are too many as this dark romantic flick has already made its presence through vivaciously sounding ‘Darling’. Does this critically acclaimed director cum composer be able to deliver out another chartbusting success? Can we expect 7 KHOON MAAF to be one among best sellers of this year? Let’s explore into its music terrains...
Hyped and then controversy! As the seven multifarious shades of Priyanka Chopra’s character made their domineering presence in garishly loud ‘Darling’, it was labeled as inspired version of ‘Kalinka’ (Russian army marching
choir song) in almost every media circuits. This flamboyantly promoted soundtrack was infectious in its catchiness, peculiarly voluble in grumbling tones, innovative in orchestral display that made itself notable, thanks to bold experimentation by composer Vishal Bharadwaj. It welcomes the arrival of Bollywood’s first pop diva Usha Uthup back in marquee who croons ‘Darrrrling’ with immense pace to set tempo for ostentatiously festive number. Rekha Bharadwaj leads this ‘Russian’ flavored choral floor dancing number to perfection in her boisterous tones, nurtured optimally with all pompous sounds and rhythms to befit the mood. Bharadwaj’s aesthetics in mixing and matching all ‘militarydrill’ instrumental elements adds pulsating groove to the decorum and makes it a predictable chartbuster in days to come. Hard Kaur: ‘I’ve faced racial discrimination’
M
umbai,- Rapper Hard Kaur, best known for her single ‘Ek glassy...’ plays a role that mirrors her life in Nikhil Advani’s forthcoming film Patiala House. Kaur was born in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. After her father was burnt alive in the 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom, young Kaur moved to Ludhiana and then to Birmingham, UK. She says, “I faced racial discrimination from the English as well as Africans during my schooling there.” At home things were no different for her than what her character in the film, Komal, faces. She adds, “It was easier for me to relate to my character. My real life grandparents would say good Punjabi girls don’t sing. Like in the film, they too wanted me to give up my dreams of becoming a rapper. Only my mother was supportive of my decision.” Reminiscing about her school days in Birmingham, Kaur says, “Indian parents back then didn’t let their children mix with non-Asians for fear that they’d lose their culture. However, today things are changing. NRI kids there have found a way to be successful in their chosen fields while keeping their values intact. When I started rapping it was a bastion of Africans or AfroAmericans but I went ahead and pursued it anyway.” Kaur has also sung two songs, ‘Longda lashkara...’ and ‘Rolla paigaya khamba...’ for Shankar Ehsaan Loy in Patiala House. Besides, she’s also sung for Remo D’souza’s forthcoming directorial project F.A.L.T.U.

Sajid-Wajid give credit to Salman for awards!
M
umbai, Feb 1 (IANS) The composer duo SajidWajid are on cloud nine after winning a series of awards for their music in last year’s blockbuster “Dabangg” and the two give credit to Salman Khan for their success. They bagged best music director awards at Star Screen Awards, Apsara Awards, Zee Cine Awards and Filmfare Awards for the funny cop drama in which Salman Khan played the lead role. “I am on cloud nine and it’s really fun. If we have worked hard, god has acknowledged it. Out of 101 percent, I would give 100 percent credit to Salman bhai and keep the rest with me for the success. Salman is like a godfather to us. When no one gave us a chance, he believed in us,” Sajid told IANS in an interview. Wajid said: “I give 100 percent credits to Salman Khan. He stood by us when nobody believed in us, he believed in our music, so certainly whatever we are today, a major part of the credit goes
to him. If he had not been with us, our journey would have been more difficult.” The duo was introduced to Bollywood by actor-directorproducer Sohail Khan with “Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya” in 1998 and since then they have given music for almost all Salman films and with “Dabangg” they have struck gold. This film fetched Salman too his first award in the best actor category. “No one can underrate Salman Khan. One’s ability can’t be measured by whether he is awarded or not. People make their position with their work; awards are just an extension of it. As a human being, Salman has garnered so many awards from normal people. As a human being he is far ahead,” said Wajid. As of now they are not associated with any Salman film, but they are sure to remain loyal to him. “Certainly! We always look up to him. We are his loyalists and would always want to work with him,” said Wajid.

New Mercedes C-Class to launch early in 2011
T
he new Mercedes C-Class, to be launched early in the new year, has undergone several modifications including a new front and rear and energy efficient engines that reduce consumption by up to 31 percent compared to the predecessor model, according to the carmaker. Efficiency-enhancing measures include improved 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission and the ECO start/stop function. Ten new driving assistance systems ranging from Attention Assist drowsiness detection to Distronic Plus proximity control are now available in the new models. Interior modernisation is supplemented with a new telematics generation, completely redesigned displays and onboard internet access. According to the carmaker, some 2,000 new components distinguish the latest generation from its predecessor. The C-Class is the highest-selling model series and thus of particular importance to Mercedes. The current series has found over one million buyers worldwide since its launch in March 2007. Among the distinguishing design changes are the more expressive and dynamic contours with the front section being brought closer to the brand’s new design idiom such as the more prominent radiator grille surround. The main focus of the design work in the interior was on restyling the dashboard with its integrated screen and

new surface grain. The touch surfaces of the controls are more finely detailed and galvanised. The combination of keys, high-gloss areas and a new knurled wheel design accentuates the higher perceived value of the interior. The Elegance and Avantgarde lines are more distinguishable from each other. This has been partly achieved by new trim in matt ash wood or walnut in the Elegance class, or dark aluminum or black ash wood in the Avantgarde. Standard features in the Elegance line include luxury head restraints whose side bolsters can be adjusted as required. Both the sedan and estate versions have been given an aluminum bonnet, which contributes to weight reduction and fuel efficiency. All the rear-wheel drive C-Class models are equipped with the ECO start/stop function as standard. In future all automatic versions with the exception of the C 300 CDI 4MATIC will feature the further-developed 7G-Tronic Plus seven-speed automatic transmission. All the petrol engines in the model series have direct injection. One of the highlights is the introduction of the new V6 petrol engine in the C 350 BlueEFFICIENCY. Power has increased to an output of 225 kW/306 hp from 215 kW/292 hp in the predecessor model. Fuel consumption meanwhile has been reduced to 6.8 litres per 100 km – 1.5 litres or 31 percent less than the preceding C 350 model, according to Mercedes.
NASA twin probes let us view the sun in 3D
NASA’s 2006 STEREO probes have sent back our first full 360 degree, 3D view of the sun. Scientists will use this information to better predict cosmic weather and learn more about the inner workings of the heart of our solar system. Yesterday, NASA confirmed a very vital piece of information to all mankind: we now know that the sun is, without a doubt, a sphere. For the first time, the space agency is able to see both the front and back of the sun. Luckily, there were no surprises. NASA now has an uninterrupted feed of both sides of the sun, allowing it to monitor and gather invaluable information about its health and inner workings. To obtain the 360 degree view, NASA launched twin STEREO probes into opposing orbits of the sun. Each satellite sends back high resolution pictures of half of the star and computers here on Earth combine the images to form a full view. The human eye is no match for these cameras. The probes can actually take pictures of four wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet radiation, giving scientists even more important information on a consistent basis. “With data like these, we can fly around the sun to see what’s happening over the horizon—without ever leaving our desks,” said STEREO program scientist Lika Guhathakurta. “I expect great advances in theoretical solar physics and space weather forecasting.” Like advances in weather forecasting, seeing the backside of the sun can help scientists see things like sunspots form before they are in view of Earth, giving us valuable time to prepare for events like flares and plasma clouds that could head toward our small planet. “With this nice global model, we can now track solar storms heading toward other planets, too,” points out Guhathakurta. “This is important for NASA missions to Mercury, Mars, asteroids … you name it.” The STEREO probes left earth in Oct. 2006 and have been working toward alignment ever since. The two probes aligned on Feb. 6, 2011, which is when NASA received its first full view of the sun. The agency receives new photos every 10 minutes. NASA has been busy lately. In the last few months it has discovered alien life on Earth and discovered several habitable planets outside of our solar system.
SanDisk brings SDHC cardsto USB 3.0 speeds SanDisk’s new Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-I SDHC card can read and right at up to 45 MB/s, easing transfer of photos and HD video. High-resolution cameras and video recorders of capturing high-definition 1080p glory might be commonplace these days, but that also means the mammoth files created by these image capture devices are also getting commonplace—and they aren’t getting any easier to manage. Now SanDisk aims to fix the problem with its new SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-I card that can support read and write speeds of up to 45 MB/s—meaning it can keep up with USB 3.0 connections and get those photos, videos, and documents zipped back and forth between portable devices and PCs in record time. www.indian-times.com.au

Besides the temples exemplary for their architecture and bold artistic statement, Khajuraho is just a small modest village with no more than 3000 residents surrounded by the forestland. As Khajuraho gets a fair number of tourists from all over the world every year, hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops have sprung up in large numbers at the entrances to the two distinctive groups of temples here. Aeroplanes are not a thing of curiosity for the villagers anymore and the emblem of a warrior fighting a lion single-handedly and with his bare hands seen frequently at the temples is said to be the depiction of the valiant warrior-king who was the head of the clan of the Chandela Rajputs who built the temples. Chandelas are believed to be the descendants of the Moon God himself. The construction of the temples is said to have started in the mid- 9th century and continued until the early 12th century and due to the lack of records of the building activity, the names of the thousands of sculptors, architects and masons, who must have contributed in their construction has been lost forever into obscurity. Chandela dynasty had already lost its glory by the time the last temple was completed. Khajuraho was the capital of the Chandelas for a brief period but for most of the part, it was their religious center. However, there have been many theories regarding the sculptures adorning the facades and interiors of the Khajuraho temples. Some of them believe these temples to be centers of tantrik mysticism, which regards sex as an important part of human development and the attainment of the Absolute. Others believe that they were constructed as such to lure men and women back to the family and worldly life, which play an important part in Hinduism, from the austerities preached by the Buddha that were gaining favor with people of that time. Since thick forests surrounded these temples thus shielding them from the Muslim armies. T. S. Burt, the British engineer who re-discovered the temples in the mid-19th century found the sculptures offensive. However, the local villagers and tribals have regularly used the temples ever since they were constructed, especially, the temple of Matangeshwar Mahadev for worshipping. It was General Alexander Cunningham who worked hard to gather details about them for the first time in his Survey of India reports. It was his efforts that stirred interest in people about the place. Later, the roads were constructed, facilities were provided for and luxury hotels were planned here and thus, started the resurrection of Khajuraho

He is from the super-elite crust of social hierarchy and he looks the part.” However, he didn’t doubt for a second, his ability to get into the skin of his character. “I’ve seen him transform into a character in earlier films like Omkara. He has amazing malleability. And he’s a keen learner.”
After studying the Holy Quran for Kurbaan, Saif Ali Khan is now studying the Vedas for Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan, in which he plays a youth from a socially backward class. he director is apprising the Chota Nawab on the genesis of socio-econonic inequality and the rise of job-reservations in India. Intense research sessions and discussions are on at least thrice a week between Jha and SAK. Kahani Kuch Aisi Hai... In Aarakshan, Saif, the rebel from the grassroots, is a lecturer at the same college where he was once a student. He is in love with the upper-caste principal Amitabh Bachchan’s daughter Deepika Padukone. Dekh Bhai Dekh A look-test was recently done on Saif. Though Prakash Jha is
not willing to reveal Saif’s look in Aarakshan, we learnt that he has lost his beefy look and is wearing a leaner sinewy gaunt look of a “famished fighter.” And a moustache. Study in contrasts Jha says, “Saif plays an educated man from an underprivileged class. Outwardly, he seems like the last

Mandira Bedi is pregnant? Baby bump says- Yes!
Bebo keeps her cool despite Priyanka keeps her waiting
B
ebo keeps her cool despite PC keeping her waiting for four hours. Shoots her performance the next day On Friday night, Kareena Kapoor drove down from Pune to Mumbai to shoot for her televised act for an award function. What should’ve ended in a matter of hours took forever thanks to Priyanka Chopra. After finishing her make-up and hair, Bebo arrived on the stage to find it occupied by her arch rival PC. She had to wait for four hours before she could shoot her performance. Will be here awhile
Mandira Bedi seems to have mastered the art of staying in the news. Even before the buzz around her topless photos could die, new suspicions have emerged. Recently she set tongues wagging after she posed topless in a mini skirt for the Vogue magazine. This time the buzz is that she might be pregnant! The lady who made the noodle-strap famous when she anchored the world cup shows, might finally be ready to start a family with her husband Raj Kaushal, the producer with whom she has been married for around 11 years now.
5b
Reveals a source present at the awards, “Kareena landed at Yash Raj Studios around midnight she found the stage occupied by Priyanka. She waited patiently for a few minutes. On spotting her, PC came down from the stage and told Bebo that she couldn’t give up the stage till 1 am (though the latter had been assigned the stage at 12 am).”
Ms Chopra continued to rehearse till 4 am, at which time, the exhausted Kapoor girl decided to go home. Cancellation, explanation The following morning, Bebo asked her manager Zahid to cancel her shooting (with Salman Khan for Bodyguard) for Saturday in Pune and then returned to the studio to finish her song. Normally, the fiery Kareena would have flared up at being kept waiting for over four hours but though she was smarting over the humiliation, she kept her cool. Later, she called the organisers and said her piece. They explained to her due to some technical problems, Priyanka’s act had taken so much time. PC’s spokesperson maintained she wasn’t aware of Bebo having to wait for four hours, “Not that I am aware. Priyanka had a long act with many changes.” Kareena remained unavailable for comment.

Who can deny the fact that Rishi Kapoor, who completed 40 years in bollywood, is still taking lessons. Though it has nothing to do with his career skills but something concerning his personal life. It’s learnt that while shooting for his film PATIALA HOUSE with Akshay Kumar, Rishi Kapoor was highly impressed with Akki’s eating habits. It’s a known fact that Akshay takes extreme care of his fitness so much so that he has a routine of getting up at 4 am even if his previous shoot warps up late. So, while Rishi and Akshay bonded on the sets of the film, Rishi learnt a thing or two about Akshay’s healthy habits and has been impressed by the same. The veteran actor thinks that Akshay knows the art of eating the right food and is trying to copy the act. Though Akki might still have a long way to go to match Rishi Kapoor’s charisma, but this time it was the veteran taking some lessons from bollywood’s Mr. Dependable.

Income Tax (I-T) raids on Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra’s properties have revealed that the former Miss World has invested most of her earnings in real estate and owns nine flats in the city. I-T officials had, on Monday, raided 12 premises of actresses Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif. They sealed 12 lockers and seized documents related to their various properties in the city. Sources say that Priyanka had bought five flats on the sixth floor of Raj Classic building at Yari Road According to I-T sources, Chopra bought five flats on the sixth floor of Raj Classic building at Yari Road, Versova, where she lives. She has combined three flats into one large apartment, which has almost all the modern amenities. Officials also stumbled upon another apartment owned by her, which was also made by combining two separate flats in the same building. This is besides a penthouse and three flats which have been rented out by the actress in recent months. Officials recorded the statement of Chopra’s mother, Dr Madhu, soon after she returned to the city from Ranchi late last evening. Officials questioned her in connection with some property deals in the western suburbs. According to a senior official, a team is also verifying whether Kaif remitted money to her parents living in London. They are also checking records to find out how much money was earned through guest appearances in stage shows and whether she declared the income and paid taxes. “It will take time to verify the documents and open the 12 lockers, “ said Arun Kumar Singh, additional director (Investigation), I-T department.
FilmFare used to be held, and wonder if I would get to see it someday, and today after 40 years, they pay me a tribute! I could never have dreamt of it even. I just wanted to be able to get inside Hall!” he remarked in Twitter. Starting his career in the film SAAT HINDUSTANI, Bachchan has entertained his fans in multiple avatars over the past forty years. “Overwhelmed by all your good wishes and congratulatory words for 40 years Filmfare Award .. thank you .. you make life worth it !!” tweeted Big B.

ts day four and the excitement index on the show grows bigger and brighter as ‘The Game’ continues on the show Zor Ka Jhatka in Argentina. Filled with apprehension and excitement, the participants get ready to face the new twist unveiled by a dashing superstar who shares centre stage with Shahrukh Khan at the studios. In the new Kamartod Qualifier round, Abhishek Bachchan joins the King Khan to cheer up the participants in his witty, encouraging style. Spicing things up this time round, SRK and Abhishek decide to divide the participants into two teams, putting themselves in the driver’s seat of this game! SRK takes Raja, Krushna, Natasha and Mink into his team while Abhishek’s gang comprises of Debina, Amit, Payal, Manas and Dimpy. This starts an interesting battle between the two superstars. The fun quotient goes sky rocketing when Kangna Ranaut makes a special appearance in the last segment of the show. After watching the ‘Dizzy Dummy’ round, Abhishek gets a bit dizzy himself. SRK comes to the rescue, cleverly telling him that he has some paper bags just in case anyone throws up! They hit the arena singing & dancing, fully pepped up for the battle ahead. While Mink sang ‘Minka Ki Jawaani’ with a tambourine, Dimpy sang ‘Judaai Judaai’ for her beloved husband Rahul Mahajan.

atrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor’s love is not a secret anymore. The duo vehemently denies being in a relationship but daily updates about their love affairs confirms that the couple are together and very much in love. It was revealed that Katrina Kaif was not in her house when I-T officials knocked her door. She was in Ranbir Kapoor’s house. Kat spend the night before I-T raids at Ranbir’s residence. Her car was seen parked at the actor’s garage. The night before the raid the duo together left Karan Johar’s party. Kat went to Ranbir’s house and spend the night there. Till 7 am in the morning, Katrina’s car was seen parked at the Kapoor’s residence. The duo has been shooting separately and did not find time to spend time together so most of the time; they are spotted in each other’s company.
Well, the I-T raids has also disclosed Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor’s privacy. So, there is no any doubt that Priyanka-Shahid and KatrinaRanbir are couple.

Salman already has kids!
T
he reason why Salman Khan always wanted to marry was so that he could have kids but now it seems the star is no longer interested in marriage as he already has kids! The Dabangg Khan, better known as Controversy’s child says he has children of his own. Ok, not literally but here’s what he said. “Why should I marry? One marries to have children, but I already have children! My nieces and nephews are my children. I wanted to marry to make babies, but now I have them, so marriage isn’t that important, is it?” he told. Salman Khan The actor, who has been paired with some of the most beautiful divas (both onscreen and offscreen), has arguably been the most talked about and speculated celebrity of the industry. Recently, the star was in the news for his alleged breakup and taunts at his ‘ex-girlfriend’ Katrina Kaif; so now are there any wedding plans on the cards? “(I will marry) by the end of this year,” and quickly adds with a chuckle, “Well, I’ve been saying this for so many years now and will be saying so for many more to come, I guess,”

Sonakshi Sinha turns item girl for Farah Khan A ccording to the latest buzz, Sonakshi Sinha will do an item song for Farah Khan’s film. After Katrina Kaif, Farah will make Sonakshi dance to a grooving number. Farah has made Katrina shake her belly but it is yet to be confirmed what she has stored for Sonakshi. Farah revealed her plans, “I’d love to make Sonakshi do something totally different and seductive soon. She is my next item girl post Katrina. She is also working in my home production next titled ‘Joker’”. When asked whether Sonakshi will be doing belly dancing, Farah quipped, “Belly dancing is a big no no for Sonakshi!” Surprisingly, Sonakshi has no idea about Farah’s intentions as she said, “She (Farah) hasn’t told me anything as yet! But I am sure if it’s Farah, it will be something big.” If Sheila has got a tough competition from Munni then Sonakshi should also get ready to face tough competition from Kareena Kapoor as Bebo is also doing a raunchy item number Chammak Challo’ in ‘Ra.One’.

‘Dhoom’ great franchise to be part of, says ‘villain’ Aamir
M
umbai, Aamir Khan is excited to play villain in “Dhoom 3”. The superstar Wednesday said “Dhoom” was a great franchise to work in even though he initially didn’t think he would fit in. “I have recently signed ‘Dhoom 3’. I liked the script very much. When I had watched ‘Dhoom’, I liked it a lot. I enjoyed the music and the whole attitude. It’s a very fun film. I really liked it. I never thought I would fit in this kind of film,” Aamir told reporters at a press meet here. Victor Acharya, who wrote “Dhoom” and “Dhoom 2” is the writerdirector of “Dhoom 3”. The earlier installments were directed by Sanjay Gadhvi and starred Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra. “When I heard the story from Victor, I really enjoyed it. Very well-written script, very enjoyable. It’s a great franchise and I am happy to be part of it. I am also looking forward to work with Abhishek and Uday,”
Aamir said. “It’s true that for the first time I’m doing a negative role, an antihero in the mainstream film. I liked my role and all the characters are very well-written. Actually, in
between I did another negative role in an offbeat film ‘1947 Earth’,” said Aamir. This is the second time Aamir is working with Yash Raj Films after “Fanaa” in 2006. “I have worked with Yash Raj and I have a very comfortable relation with them,” he said. The actor said Victor and producer Aditya Chopra are yet to decide the actress opposite him. While “Dhoom” starred John Abraham as villain, “Dhoom 2” saw Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai sizzle too. Victor Acharya’s debut “Tashan” (2008) fared badly at the box office but that didn’t deter Aamir from signing his film. “I think he is a very talented director. One shouldn’t decide a director’s capacity with the fate of any one of his films. I have full faith in him,” Aamir said.

A
ctress Gwyneth Paltrow, who locked lips with Tom Cruise in Austin Power, describes the star as an amazing kisser. ‘I did a little cameo once at the beginning of Austin Powers 3, I think it was, and I got to make out with Tom Cruise. He was an amazing kisser!’ people.com quoted Paltrow as saying. Paltrow’s recent outing is Country Strong and she enjoyed stepping out of her otherwise regimented life for her role as alcoholic singer in the movie. ‘You just get really drunk all the time. Which is awesome! At least I did anyway, it’s not very professional. There’s a Bloody Mary at 10 a.m. and keep it going all day!’ she said. ‘It was actually very liberating and amazing to play somebody who just didn’t think about consequences because I’m so responsible with my life, and too worried about everybody and my kids and where’s everybody going,’ she added.

op Chef host Padma Lakshmi, who is embroiled in a legal battle over the custody of her baby, has said that she doesn’t care whose baby it is. “I don’t care if Hitler himself had impregnated me. It’s a miracle I got pregnant and that Krishna’s here,” the New York Post quoted Lakshmi as telling a friend. Since giving birth to her daughter, Krishna, last February, Lakshmi has been at war with the girl’s father, venture capitalist Adam Dell. According to Dell, 41, since the baby was born, Lakshmi has allowed him only 9 days of visitation a month, at 3 1/2 hours per day. The war went public last week as Dell filed for full custody in Manhattan Supreme Court. Lakshmi, said a friend, doesn’t know why Dell has gone to court, and “has never denied Adam the agreed time with the baby.”

India risks Olympics ire with new sports boss law
Ferrari unveils new F1 car for 2011 season
N
F
errari has unveiled its new car for the upcoming Formula One season and Fernando Alonso says he’s hopeful it will help him make amends for the disappointing end to the 2010 championship.
The Italian team is the first F1 outfit to show off its 2011 car, naming it the F150 in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification. The car features a new adjustable rear wing and has been modified for the use of the KERS system, which was banned last year but returns in 2011. Alonso led the championship going into the last race in 2010 but was overtaken by Sebastian Vettel after a failed pit stop strategy by Ferrari in Abu Dhabi. Alonso said Friday that “I think I know the team better now and I feel far more integrated into the team. The development through 2010 was crucial to the new car.”
EW DELHI — India’s sports minister said Tuesday the government would press ahead with plans to craft a controversial law to limit the terms of its ageing sports bosses. Ajay Maken said his ministry had prepared a national sports development bill to be introduced in parliament that would limit the tenures of the country’s top sports officials and impose age restrictions. The move could put India on collision course with international sports federations, including the International Olympic Committee which has already threatened to bar India from the Olympics over the proposal. “We want to put the age limit on office-bearers at 70,” Maken told reporters at a packed press conference. “After that they must vacate their seats in favour of fresh and younger people. “Also, any official can head a sports body for a maximum of two successive terms not exceeding eight years.” A number of senior politicians holding senior sports positions would be affected, particularly the disgraced chairman of the Indian Commonwealth Games organising committee and Indian Olympic Association president, Suresh Kalmadi. Kalmadi, 66, a high-profile lawmaker from the ruling Congress party, is held responsible for the shambolic organisation of the corruption-tainted Delhi Commonwealth Games in October. Others set to lose out include opposition lawmaker Vijay Kumar Malhotra, who has led the country’s archery federation for 31 years, and former sports minister Sukhdev Dhindsa, who has presided over cycling for 14 years. Maken, a senior member of the
Indian Sports Minister Ajay Maken
ruling Congress party, appealed to the sports chiefs to support the legislation. “Those who will be affected by this law will feel hurt. But it is a request in the larger interest of the country that they liberate sports and allow athletes and younger people to come in,” he said. Maken said the law drew heavily from the Olympic Charter, which sets out guidelines for the functioning of the Olympic committees, and was not aimed at curtailing the autonomy of sports federations. The International Olympic Committee has threatened to bar India from the Olympics unless the spat over age limits is resolved.
It insists that Olympic bodies are independent and should not be subject to political meddling despite the large amounts of public money used to host major sporting events. The IOC board repeated its warning earlier this month that “appropriate measures and actions” might be taken that might “seriously affect the representation and participation of India at the Olympic Games.” The Olympic body has the power to impose sanctions including suspending the country from its membership -- a move that would prevent India from taking part in the 2012 London Olympics.
Cricket World Cup 2011: Team India gets down to business
T
he whole of India wants it to be Sachin Tendulkar’s World Cup. And why not! As soon as the team bus arrived at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, one spotted the maestro sitting in the first row. Tendulkar may not be leading the side, but looking at the manner in which he stepped out of the vehicle, one could sense that hunger in him. The World Cup means a lot to him and that was more than evident ahead of the first practice session. The entire team participated in a football game. Tendulkar left the field a little later, and spent the rest of the day at the NCA gymnasium. Coach Gary Kirsten is keen on getting the players ready for
February 2011 Edition
Sunday’s warm-up game against Australia. He chose to engage the boys in some light workout and short stints at the nets. Kirsten was the busiest man around. The South African was seen throwing balls at Virender Sehwag and then Gautam Gambhir. The last batsman to face Kirsten was YuvrajSingh. The coach also had a word with Yuvi. The others who had a hit were Virat Kohli, Yusuf Pathan and Harbhajan Singh, who, surprisingly, did not bowl on Wednesday. Skipper MS Dhoni also batted for 10 minutes at an extreme corner of the nets. The bowlers, too, had a light session with Eric Simons keeping a close watch. The bowling coach, who stationed himself behind the
stumps, made good use of his baseball glove. Ashish Nehra was seen working very hard. The leftarm pacer was trying to get his run-up and rhythm right. Meanwhile, Kirsten was quick to point out to National Cricket Academy director Sandeep Patil that the practice pitches had a lot of grass. He then ensured that the grass was shaved off. One reckons India will try to make full use of the home advtange. After all, the flat tracks will only help out batsmen and spinners. Before he left for the day, Kirsten had a nice look at the bald pitch. It was an indication of what we’d see in the days to come.

World Cup will prove ODIs alive and well - Lorgat New Delhi: Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, has said next month’s World Cup will prove that 50-over cricket can co-exist with the Test and Twenty20 formats. Since the inception of Twenty20 cricket and its raging success, the ODI format has been perceived to be under threat, but Lorgat said those fears were overstated. “I think the talk of poor interest in 50-over cricket is overstated. I firmly believe that all three forms of the game will co-exist and in fact thrive at international level,” Lorgat told ESPNSTAR.com. “To be frank, the talk of a demise of 50-over ODI cricket is way out of whack with what we are experiencing. Players, spectators, TV viewers and administrators still see great value in the ODIs. “I hope that the World Cup will add to reversing the poor perception of 50-over cricket as some of the recent matches already have.” In an attempt to revitalise limited-overs cricket, Australia are experimenting with a split-innings format in their domestic competition, while England, South Africa and Zimbabwe have all shifted to a 40-over competition. However, Lorgat said the ICC doesn’t have plans to tinker with the format of the game. “There are no plans to dramatically change the format of the 50-over game at international level. That said, we encourage our members to experiment with different formats and initiatives to see if there are ways it can be enhanced. “The ODI today has a very different look and feel to what it was 40 years ago when the first match took place in 1971. We have always embraced change and will continue to do so.” Lorgat said the 2011 tournament, which starts on February 19, would be the most unpredictable World Cup in history. “It seems to me that the top teams are all playing some wonderful cricket at present and there is precious little to decide between them.
Bring home the World Cup Sachin
New Delhi: Sir Don Bradman finished with a career average of 99.94 in Test cricket, distanced from that magical triple-figure average by a second-ball naught in his last innings at The Oval in 1948. Sixty-three years later, Sir Don’s mirror image - as confessed by the magician himself - will try to cap a run-loaded career with a World Cup trophy and 100 international hundreds. ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat
“The Australians could make history by becoming the first team to win four in a row but they will be challenged as they are not as dominant today as they were four years ago. The other teams, no doubt, will sense an opportunity to wrestle the cup from their tight grasp.” Lorgat said the passion for cricket in the subcontinent would ensure a successful World Cup. “Nowhere in the world can one find love and power for the game as in the subcontinent. We are expecting all the people from the three host nations to come out in force, support their teams and follow the tournament.”
Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who has shouldered the expectations of billions throughout his envious career and has been part of every World Cup since 1992, will once again have a crack at adding the elusive trophy to his shimmering cabinet. The gentle assassin came lose to winning it for India in 1996 (losing semifinalist to Sri Lanka) and 2003 (losing finalist to Australia) but failed to finish on the right side despite being the leading scorer of the tournament with 523 runs in 1996 and 673 in 2003. Though he is on the verge of completing a never-thought-of 100 international hundreds (51 in Tests and 46 in ODIs currently), the World Cup trophy continues to elude him but could coincide with this record to cap off a career overflowing with 17,629 runs in 444 ODIs, 14,692 in 171 Tests and 10 in the only T20 international he played before deciding to give youngsters a chance to don India colours in cricket’s newest avatar. Team India is undoubtedly loaded with match-winners with the bat but Sachin’s new-found, child-like hunger for runs makes the diminutive run-machine the fire that continues to power India and will undoubtedly be central to India’s chances of lifting the cup after a hiatus of 28 years. Sachin’s run-scoring never ceased, other than due to the back injury and tennis elbow that brought some relief to the bowlers world over as it either kept him away from cricket or seriously restricted his run-making prowess. But the man returned to register every conceivable batting record to his name, making critics look foolhardy for the comments they made while the little master was recuperating. Sachin, though, will himself admit that while he kept knocking off records, his dream of winning India the World Cup only grew stronger. The nine-month break he took after his record-breaking 200 not out in an ODI against South Africa couldn’t have been for anything but to keep himself fresh for the World Cup that is now knocking on his door.
‘We won’t be considered as underdogs’: Dhoni Indian cricket skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has said eam India won’t be considered underdogs in the 2011 World Cup, as it has reacted to pressure more responsibly over the last few years. “We won’t be considered as underdogs this time. The team has learnt to perform under pressure and we have done so in the past three years. We have changed the meaning of pressure to responsibility,” Dhoni told reporters here. “Cricket is the biggest sport in India and we are looking at the tournament in a positive way .We are just going to stick to our basics and hope that we do well. We definitely have the potential,” he added. When questioned about possible reactions from Indian fans if the team fails to perform at the World Cup, Dhoni said: “We are not thinking about what may happen, because those things are beyond our control. There is a lot of cricket ahead of us and we are going to take each game in the right frame of mind. We hope that we can do well at the tournament.” The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, which kicks off on February 19, will be the tenth Cricket World Cup, and will be hosted by three South Asian Test cricket playing nations: India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. February 2011 Edition
The Mumbaikar returned in the ODI series against South Africa in the rainbow nation but almost gave a heart attack to his billions of fans when he returned in the middle of the series with a hamstring injury. But all is well now with India’s main hope, who has amassed 1,796 runs in 36 World Cup matches, punctuated by four centuries. And with the 2011 edition happening on home soil, fours and sixes are expected to flow with consummate ease. While nobody wants to believe that Sachin’s record-equalling sixth World Cup is probably going to be his last one as well, the batting legend will know that this indeed is his last chance to quench India’s thirst of a second World Cup triumph after winning it in 1983 and missing narrowly in 2003.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
An Ayurvedic Help:
Dr. C.R.S. Kumar
WHAT IS IBS? IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome) is also known as spastic colitis, mucus colitis and nervous colon syndrome. Around one in five Australians experiences the unpleasant symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) at some time. It is a long-term (chronic) gastrointestinal disorder that causes wide range of complaints. The most common symptoms include from abdominal pain, bloating, mucous in stools, irregular bowel habits, and alternating diarrhoea and constipation. Although it is a chronic condition, symptoms tend to wax and wane over the years.
CAUSES IBS cause great distress among patients. According to the conventional system it is an idiopathic, functional, gastro-intestinal disorder, whereas According to Ayurvedic Medicine this is related to “Grahani” and the causes are explained in detail in the ancient books such as Charaka samhitha , Madhva Nidhana. According to the modern science it is a functional disturbance and it is mainly associated with stress. It is believed to be a disorder of motor and sensory functions of GI tract. According to Ayurveda it is related to Grahani. The main reasons are include improper eating habits,
drinking, exercising too soon after eating, forcing and restraining natural urges and taking chemical drugs. Due to the above mentioned reasons there will increase accumulation of toxins (AMA) in the digestive system and blocks the circulation and finally cause disruption to the function of the GI (Includes dhoshic imbalance) and results in improper bowel moments and other symptoms. Vata type or the constipation type of IBS which is mainly dominated by dryness of skin, abnormal mucus secretions, alteration of constipation and diarrhoea, bloating, insomnia, anal fissure and severe weight loss. Pitta type or the diarrhoea type of IBS which is mainly dominated by hotness, burning sensation, thirst, irritability, excessive sweat or perspiration, heartburn, fever and foul smelling stools. Kaphs type or the dysentery type of IBS which is mainly dominated by mucus, nausea, indigestion, heaviness in the abdomen, sluggish bowel moments and lethargy. Tridhosic type of IBS is mainly dominated by the three humors and consists all complaints of three different types of IBS.
TREATMENT IN AYURVEDA According to Ayurvedic philosophy it is mainly triggered by the Vata dhosha and the treatment should initially address
the Vata. Whereas, Modern medical science mainly treats the symptoms but the root cause by administrating Anti Spasmodic and anti cholinergic drugs to reduce the pain and bloating, anti diarrheal, anti constipation, psychotropic agents such as tricyclic depressants and anxiolytics and serotonin receptor agonist and antagonists are used to treat the other symptoms. The side effects of anti cholinergic and other drugs include but not confined to urinary retention, tachycardia, dry mouth and constipation etc. According to Ayurveda the treatments starts from the behavioural and lifestyle modifications, drug therapy, detoxification and rejuvenation treatments to avoid the aggravated dhoshas (Humors). It mainly involves meditation, pranayama, doing asanas, and maintains regular routine like regular sleeping and eating and avoiding stressful situations etc. Generally a SATVIC diet and life style is highly advisable to prevent and cure the symptoms of IBS. Few Ayurvedic Recommendations:
Life
Style
1. Increase dietary fibre 2. Restore healthy balance of bacteria in GI tract 3. Indentify and avoid food intolerances 4. Mind – Body therapy 5. Need to know the Ayurvedic compatibility of the food ingredients 6. Timely eating and sleeping habits
7. Regular physical exercise Finally, IBS is not a life threatening disorder but it makes life more miserable. It is highly important for the patients and practitioners to be aware that the cure may take time and it not just simply enough with medications, but it needs a life style and behavioural change to prevent and control IBS.

Top Ten Cell Phone Safety Facts
L
ast few years has seen some raging controversy on usage of cell phones. Over 80% of the world citizens are in a possession of cell phones. the number s of cell number in the world will exceed 5 billion and the number will keeps growing with broad band joining the bandwagon. Evidence seems to be pouring in about the harm of ‘Electro Magnetic Radiation’ (EMR) from cell phones. More evidence is required before we raise our alarms about this device but the preliminary scientific report gives us reason to alert members about the need to take certain precautions. One of the first advices would be to keep cell phone usage to minimum, as even a two-minute call from the cell phone alters the natural electrical activity of the brain for up to an hour.
1. Keep the handset if possible at least 2 to 7 inches away from your head or use loudspeaker mode. It decreases the transmission of electro-magnetic radiation to the brain significantly.
containers’ like Vehicles, Elevators, Airplanes, Trains and any other type of metal container as it increases the EMR.
2. Do not keep the cell phones close to your head when sleeping. Switch it off in the night or keep it 1.80 meters or 6 feet away from your head.
6. Avoid using the wired headsets. If you do use headsets use an air tube headset with ferrite beads. Blue tooth are better as they emit 1/100th the EMR of a normal cell phone. With regular headsets you get 3 times more EMR than if you hold the cell phone against your ear.
3. If keeping cell phones in pocket keep the keypad towards you so that antenna faces away from you. 4. Don’t use cell phones if pregnant. The developing organs of the fetus or child are the most sensitive to any possible effects of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) exposure. 5. Avoid cell phones usage in ‘metal
7. Cell phones are a big NO for Children under 15 years as currently brain tumors are the second leading cause of death in children.
Over 80% of the world citizens are in a possession of cell phones. the cell numbers in the world will exceed more than 5 billion and the number will keeps growing.
Carbohydrates and Its Role in Obesity O
besity is a global epidemic with majority of the world’s population in developed countries being over weight or obese! According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity is rising globally with over 1 billion overweight adults out of which 300 million people are clinically obese. Obesity in itself is a disease that is responsible for many conditions ranging from hypertension and stroke to type 2 diabetes and cancer. It not only causes serious chronic illnesses, that reduce the quality of life, but also increases the risk of premature deaths. Diet and nutrition are the most significant factors responsible for an increased incidence in the number of overweight or obese people. Although genetic, metabolic, social, cultural as well as environmental factors are associated with obesity, the major cause of obesity and increased weight is the consumption of energy dense and high calorie foods such as fats and sugars, in addition to decreased physical activity. This causes an energy imbalance or an excess of energy, which is stored in the body as fat.
February 2011 Edition
Carbohydrates and Its Role in Obesity, Studies show that the quality of carbohydrates, rather than the quantity, determines whether a person gains weight and becomes obese. So, if you have a tendency to gain weight, you should refrain from eating white bread, pasta, chips, processed foods, cakes and cookies. This is because the high glycemic index in those foods causes a sudden increase in blood sugar. This increased blood sugar, if not utilized by the body, builds up as fat. Similarly, processed carbohydrates or high calorie sugars predispose to the development of diabetes and cardiac diseases, besides
causing obesity. David Ludwig, Director of the obesity program at Children’s Hospital Boston says that the “yo-yo effect” that the high glycemic index carbohydrates have on the blood sugar stimulates fat production and inflammation, increases overall caloric intake and lowers insulin sensitivity. A fiber-rich diet is important in the control and management of obesity. Fiber is a mixture of cellulose, lignin and polysaccharides called pentoses. It is the part of plant food which is indigestible and does not provide any calories. Fiber helps in the management of obesity as it provides bulk to food which makes you feel fuller while reducing the calories consumed. High fiber not only helps you to lose weight but prevents heart diseases as it reduces the absorption of lipids, proteins and simple carbohydrates which are recognized as risk factors. Certain pentoses present in fiber bind with cholesterol, thus reducing its absorption from the intestine. Daily intake of 10-12 grams of fiber is recommended. Fiber rich foods include wheat bran, whole wheat four, peas, carrots and most of the leafy green vegetables.
8. Keep cell phones well away from newborns. EMR travel through children’s brains much more easily due to thinner skulls and hence increases the risk of cancer. 9. Avoid using cell phones in your pant pocket – as radiation can affect your fertility. Avoid it in breast pocket if you have a pacemaker. 10. When buying a cell phone – look for one with a low SAR or Specific Absorption Rate. Lower the SAR number the better. For example - Popular Motorola Razr V3x has a SAR of 0.14 – which is amongst the lowest seen recently.
Women can No Longer be a Perfect Homemaker
The art of becoming a perfect home maker is slowly fading away after a recent research, it’s revealed that the number of women who can do common household work has drastically fallen down. According to the research, just over 50 percent of women under the age of 30 years know how to cook a roast compared to more than 82 percent of women during the 1950s. The number of women who can bake a lamington has also halved with less than 20 percent of the younger women stating that know how to do it compared to over 45 percent of the older women. Other areas in which the current generation of women is inferior to their older counterparts include driving a manual car and growing a plant from its cutting though nearly three fourths of the women know how to mow a lawn or wash the car.

VITAMIN A DEFICIENCY IN CHILDREN - Homeopathic Help
>>
I
The basis for lifelong health begins in childhood. Vitamin A is a crucial component. Since breast milk is a natural source of vitamin A, promoting breastfeeding is the best way to protect babies from VAD.
become blind every year, half of them dying within 12 months of losing their sight.
Raj Kothuru
Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is the leading cause of preventable blindness, night blindness, dry eye, improper working of the immune system in children and increases the risk of disease and death from severe infections like diarrheal disease and measles.
n the previous article, we briefly discussed the activities of vitamins and minerals and their importance to our good health and well being. From this article, lets delve into each and every vitamin and mineral, their natural sources, their benefits and diseases that may arise due to their deficiency in children. Let’s start with the prime of all vitamins – Vitamin A.
Neither cooking nor storage significantly affects the amount or availability of preformed vitamin A in foods.
What factors might contribute to a deficiency of vitamin A?
Children who suffer from Vitamin A deficiency show signs of tiredness, hair loss, weakened muscle, joint pain, swelling, fatigue, weight loss and memory loss.
Vitamin A is a group of compounds that play an important role in the wellbeing of the human body. Vitamin A is a fatsoluble vitamin. Which means, the body needs at least a certain amount of fat for it to successfully absorb sufficient quantities of the vitamin and it is easily stored by the body.
Importance of Vitamin A: Vitamin A has many functions in the body. In addition to helping the eyes adjust to light changes, vitamin A plays an important role in bone growth, vision health, tooth development, reproduction, cell division and gene expression. Also, the skin, eyes and mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, throat and lungs depend on vitamin A to remain moist.
An adult liver can store up to a year’s reserve of vitamin A, whereas a child’s liver may have enough stores to last only several weeks.
It helps regulate the immune system which prevents or fights infections through the production of white blood cells – the body’s police force which destroy harmful bacteria and viruses which invade our body.
Increased requirements of vitamin A most commonly occur among sick children.
Vitamin A deficiency in children:
Natural Sources of Vitamin A:
Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a significant public health problem in children in developing countries. An estimated 250 000 to 500 000 vitamin A-deficient children
Vitamin A can be found naturally in both animal and plant sources like whole eggs, whole milk, egg yolk, liver, organ meat, red
meat, fish, carrots, red palm oil, cantaloupes, sweet potatoes, spinach, cheese, papaya, mangoes, oatmeal, tomatoes, peppers, darkly colored fruits and vegetables. The more intense the color of a fruit or vegetable, the higher the beta-carotene content. These vegetable sources of beta-carotene are free of fat and cholesterol.
Inadequate intake of protein, iron deficiency, extremely lot fat diets, presence of certain medical conditions such as pancreatic enzyme deficiency, Crohn’s disease, celiac sprue, cystic fibrosis, surgical removal of part or all of the stomach, gall bladder disease, and liver disease, chronic diarrhea, viral infections, exposure to toxic chemicals etc can all contribute to vitamin A deficiency. All the body’s requirements can be sufficiently sourced from simple day to day foods when consumed in a good balance. Remember, food and nature provide the best prevention and cure.
What should parents do? Parents should understand that Vitamin A can be easily obtained from various sources and ensure that their child intakes a balanced diet full of rich vegetables and fruits. They should approach their medical practitioner for guidance.
