GHANDI JI

A ‘No’ uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a ‘Yes’ merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble. A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave. A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes. A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act. A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.

Maruti 800 and Alto are being replaced soon

Note that the above image is just an concept

T

he Maruti 800 and Alto, India’s bestselling car models, are set to drive into the sunset as Maruti Suzuki is working on a replacement for the 800cc cars to bring in a more

contemporary and fuel-efficient model. Shinzo Nakanishi, MD of Maruti Suzuki, told TOI that work is on to bring out a replacement for the two blockbuster models,

and the new model could be expected in the next two years. “Some day we have to change... Their replacement model is under development,” Nakanishi told TOI, at a time when the carmaker

is facing stiff competition. He said the two models had been in India for a “long long time” and perhaps required tuning to present-day requirements. “The new model will have a more

contemporary shape, although it will also sport an 800cc engine . And Maruti and Suzuki engineers will try to ensure high fuel efficiency.”

Navy officer drowns after training drill goes awry

In a tragic case of harsh training drills going horribly wrong, a frontline Indian warship’s captain is in the dock after a newly commissioned officer drowned after being ordered to jump overboard into the icy-cold waters of the Arabian Sea.

I

n a tragic case of harsh training drills going horribly wrong, a frontline Indian warship’s captain is in the dock after a newly commissioned officer

drowned after being ordered to jump overboard into the icy-cold waters of the Arabian Sea. Captain Rahul ‘Rolly’ Parmar, a “high-profile officer” commanding

the 3,620-tonne guided-missile stealth frigate INS Talwar, has been “relieved” of his command till the naval Board of Inquiry (BoI) being held at the Mumbai-

based Western Naval Command (WNC) into the shocking incident is completed. Sources said Sub-Lieutenant Bipin Kumar, who had to “really struggle” to become an officer coming as he did from “humble origins’’ with a retired Army havaldar as his father, drowned after being ordered by Capt Parmar to “jump into the rough sea, without proper safety precautions’’ in place, off the Gujarat coast on December 29. “There were no divers on stand-by, as is the norm, nor any life-jacket. The divers hit the waters almost 20 minutes after Kumar failed to surface. Even his body could not be found,’’ said a source. The Navy, which had kept the incident under wraps, contended it was “a freak, unfortunate accident’’ arising from the “mandatory survival at sea’’ exercises, on being contacted by TOI on Tuesday morning. Such drills are regularly held to train all officers and sailors to survive in times of emergencies by first jumping overboard and then swimming well clear of a sinking warship to embark on lifeboats or rafts. There is “no question” of Kumar being “selectively targeted” since five to six other “under-training officers” had also been lined up on the deck to jump into the sea after Kumar, the Navy said.

Moreover, there was a safety boat, with divers on board, positioned in the water before the drill began on INS Talwar. After Kumar failed to surface, a massive search operation was launched with five to six warships and aircraft being “diverted’’ to search the mishap site. The BoI will ascertain the exact sequence of events, whether all requisite safety precautions were taken or not, and fix responsibility if required, the Navy said. Incidentally, Kumar was a “strong swimmer’’, known to have regularly swum across the over 1-km wide Khadakwasla Lake as a cadet in the premier tri-Service National Defence Academy near Pune. Capt Parmar himself is known as “a bright, competent officer on the fast-track”. After having commanded a Kora-class corvette and staff appointments with the flag officer commanding-in-chief of WNC, he was the crucial director of naval operations at Navy HQ in New Delhi. He had been appointed the captain of INS Talwar, which took part in last month’s presidential fleet review, barely a couple of months ago. While new captains are known to “tighten the screws” on ensure their warships and crew fare well in operational tasks, only the BoI will establish what exactly happened in the tragic case.

n a move aimed at facing external threats against the country with more sophisticated weapon, the BrahMos Aerospace, under the ministry of defense, will soon start to develop the fastest hypersonic missile in the world. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of an international conference on Computer Communication and Informatics at Sree Sakthi Engineering College here on Tuesday, BrahMos CEO and managing director A Sivathanu Pillai said air version of BrahMos missile would be inducted into the Indian Air Force within one year and works for developing BrahMos 2, the fastest hypersonic missile in the world, would begin soon. BrahMos would take final shape

in another five years, he added. While the BrahMos missile has the speed of Mach 3 (speed of sound) moving at one km per second, the hypersonic missile would achieve a speed of Mach 6 to Mach 7, he said. “We have the guidelines and technology to make hypersonic missile. However, tests have to be conducted for configuring with the propulsion and for engine and flight tests, which would take at least five years,” Pillai said. Once operational, BrahMos 2 would be the fastest missile in the world, he stressed. Having achieved the land and sea versions of BrahMos missile, the air version was in the final stage and after carrying out the critical test, it would be inducted into the Indian Air Force to be used in Sukhoi-30, the main

strike aircraft. The missile would be a versatile system in the Defence Force, he said. Pillai said since there was no equivalent to BrahMos, many countries were queuing up for the missile for use in multiple platforms in their force. However, there is a huge requirement for this missile in India and only after fulfilling our demand, the company will think of supplying to foreign countries, he added. When asked about the raging controversy over commissioning of Kudankulam nuclear power project, Pillai said all safeguards have been taken during construction of the plant. “Experts like Dr A P J Abdul Kalam have studied all aspects about the power project. Dr Kalam had reviewed every possible aspect and came out with the report declaring its safety. Every possible safety safeguards have been taken care. There are around 12 such powers stations in operation around the world. Those power plants have been working without any problem. So, we can definitely assume that they are safe. Most of the fears expressed are imaginary,” he opined.

Virginity: Still a big deal? Going, going, gone! That was how 22-year-old Natalie Dylan in the United States publicly auctioned her virginity to pay for her college education. And, her going rate touched a whopping $3.7 million! This sparked off a heated debate over the morality of such an auction,

but Natalie said she had no moral dilemma with her decision and found it “empowering”. So, how relevant is virginity in the present context and what is youngsters’ attitude towards it - is it fashionable to remain a virgin till marriage or lose it at the first opportunity?

Around 13% of food samples found contaminated nationwide

fter milk, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has found contamination to be quite common among food items across the country. A comparative analysis has shown adulteration rates as high as 40% in Chhattisgarh, 34% in Uttarakhand, 29% in Uttar Pradesh, 23% in Rajasthan and 20% in West Bengal and Himachal Pradesh. Besides, nearly 17% of the food samples tested in Bihar and Chandigarh, 16% in Nagaland, 15% in Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa, 14% in Haryana, 12% in Tamil Nadu and 10% in Maharashtra were adulterated. In 2010, FSSAI picked up over 1.17 lakh samples of food articles and tested them. Around 13% of the samples overall were found to be adulterated. Interestingly, adulteration rates in Delhi was low - 4% while in Karnataka it was just 5%. A comparative analysis of food adulteration rates over the last three years has shown a steady increase. In 2008, 94,000 samples were examined of which over 8,300 were found to be adulterated (8.79%). In 2009, 1.13 lakh samples were examined of which 11.14% were adulterated. In 2010, 1.17 lakh samples were examined of which over 14,000 samples (12.65%) were adulterated. This has now made the health

ministry’s working group propose setting up a National Food Science and Risk Assessment Centre (NFSRAC) during the 12th Five-Year Plan. To cost around Rs 155 crore, the centre has been envisaged on the lines of the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and Centre for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition in the US. NFSRAC will be the repository of all food standards and will carry out all risk assessmentrelated work and analyse food surveillance data received from labs. “It is proposed to set up a dedicated institution under the direct control of FSSAI for regulatory research and risk assessment. The institute will also carry out a food safety risk analysis training programmes and will become functional within one year of sanction of the project,” the working group report said. The group has also proposed upgradation of Central Food Laboratories (CFL) at a cost of Rs 40 crore. The group said in its latest report to the health ministry, “It is proposed to upgrade and develop the existing Central Food Laboratories at Kolkata and Mumbai as control laboratories for development of testing methods and standardise practices.” The group has called for a nationwide food safety surveillance network and data collection on regular basis at

the cost of Rs 50 crore. “It is proposed to carry out periodic surveys for surveillance purposes with built in mechanism for emergency warning and linked with rapid action machinery. This will publish annual state of food safety reports,” the report said. This surveillance is expected to generate data regarding food hazards and possible outbreaks of food borne diseases which will help establish public health priorities for prevention, intervention and control. The group has also asked for Rs 525 crore for strengthening FSSAI including expanding its scientific wing, imported food testing/screening and additional regional offices. There are plans to also upgrade existing 62 public food labs to accredited standards

for comprehensive testing facilities as zonal labs -- one laboratory for every 10 districts costing Rs 5 crore a lab. “A network of efficient laboratories is the backbone of any credible food safety initiative. Most existing laboratories lack facilities for testing of microbiological parameters, heavy metals and residues. Further, adequate number of food testing laboratories is essential for effective enforcement with greater rate of conviction of violators, citizen empowerment and voluntary testing by food establishments to comply with the law. The hierarchy of laboratories proposed is: Cluster Food Testing Laboratories (1 in 5 districts) doing basic tests, Zonal Food Laboratories (1 in

10 districts) performing all tests including residues and heavy metals, 10 Referral Laboratories and two control labs under FSSAI,” the report said. In addition, the committee has also suggested putting in place mobile laboratory facilities to cater to festivals, natural calamities and inaccessible areas. “It is proposed to allot Rs7.5 crore to each state for setting up mobile food laboratories. These will carry out screening and analysis of samples to provide rapid results, provide additional sampling and testing capacity and also reduce time period between sample collection, analysis and reporting. Such mobile laboratories will be highly useful during festivals and large public gatherings,” the report added.

Google the best tool to predict flu outbreak, finds study

A report on the value of the Internet search tool for emergency departments, studied over a 21-month period, was published in the journal ‘Clinical Infectious Diseases’.

S

cientists may have found a way to counter an upcoming influenza outbreak - Google. Researchers at Johns Hopkins have found ‘Google Flu Trends’ a powerful early warning system for emergency departments. They say monitoring Internet search

January 2012 Edition

traffic about influenza may prove to be a better way for hospital emergency rooms to prepare for a surge in sick patients compared to waiting for outdated government flu case reports. A report on the value of the Internet search tool for emergency departments, studied over a

21-month period, was published on Tuesday in the journal ‘Clinical Infectious Diseases’. The team said ‘Google Flu Trends’ collects and provides data on search traffic for flu information on a daily basis by detecting and analyzing certain flu-related search terms. The search queries, when

combined, are good indicators of flu activity. The researchers reported a strong correlation between a rise in Internet searches for flu information, compiled by Google’s Flu Trends tool, and a subsequent rise in people coming into a busy urban hospital emergency room complaining of flu-like symptoms. For the study, the researchers tracked and reviewed Google Flu Trends data for Baltimore City, along with data on people seeking care, into the separate adult and paediatric emergency departments at the Johns Hopkins Hospital from January 2009 to October 2010. Richard Rothman, an emergency medicine physician at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, said the results showed promise for eventually developing a standard regional or national early warning system for frontline health care workers. In the long term, Rothman said, the Johns Hopkins team hopes to develop a highly reliable flu surveillance model that all emergency departments could use to reasonably predict a spike in the number of flu-like cases. Such a system, he said, could help emergency department directors and senior administrators prepare by beefing up staffing or opening up patient annexes. In this study, Rothman and his

team found the correlation between Internet searches and patient volume was most pronounced when researchers reviewed data showing a rise in search traffic for flu information and the number of children coming into the Hopkins paediatric emergency room with what doctors call influenza-like illness or ILI. Although the science and medical community has generally accepted that a rise in flu search queries on Google Flu Trends corresponds with a rise in people reporting flu-like symptoms, the Johns Hopkins team is believed to be the first to show that the Flu Trends data strongly correlates with an upswing in emergency room activity. Currently, emergency departments, hospitals and other health care providers rely on flu case reports provided during flu season, October to May, as a key way to track flu outbreaks. However, the researchers say those traditional reports, compiled using a combination of data about hospital admissions, laboratory test results and clinical symptoms, are often weeks old by the time they reach practitioners and hospitals. Thus, they don’t provide frontline health care workers with a strong tool to prepare day-to-day for a surge in flu cases, even as the flu is spreading in real time.

M

igration is fuelling India’s HIV epidemic. National AIDS Control Organisation’s latest figures show that besides high risk populations like sex workers, the highest burden of HIV is among migrants - 3.6%, which is 10 times the HIV prevalence among the general population. With migration rates increasing, the prevalence will only get worse. According to the 2001 census, 30.1% of the population was considered to have migrated (314 million) - a considerable increase from 27.4% in 1991. NACO has, therefore, identified 108 railway stations - which are both source and destination of migrants travelling in search of work. These are now the focus of the country’s anti-HIV fight. Red Ribbon Express (RRE), which chugs out of Delhi on Thursday, will stop at most of these 108 identified stations to test migrants for HIV besides carrying out counselling and spreading antiHIV messages. During it’s yearlong journey, RRE will traverse through 23 states, cover 30,000 km and stop at 162 stations. Speaking to TOI, a NACO official said, “Migrants are one of the major focus areas this time with the RRE. Last year, RRE stopped at 152 stations and reached out to 8 million people directly. This

time, around 30-40 stops will be to mainly address migrants.” NACO has identified 122 districts with high out-migration across 11 states which are on priority for starting up community level interventions. Another 75 important transit locations have been identified across these 122 districts from where these migrants usually board long distance trains/ buses to reach their destinations. Studies on the relationship between migration and HIV conducted by NACO in three popular migration corridors Ganjam-Surat, Darbhanga-Delhi and Azamgarh-Mumbai - threw up shocking findings. It showed that two to four times more number of informal workers had non-regular partners or visited sex workers with only 25% using condoms. Around 5% male migrants and 13% female migrants reported sexually transmitted infections, nearly double the national average. According to NACO, the risk of HIV infection for migrants seems to arise from a multitude of factors -- risky behaviour, lack of social and economic security and involvement in peer driven risk taking activities. In a recent study by UNDP (through Population Council), the risk of HIV among migrants was reported to be 1.68 times more likely than non-migrants. Majority of migrants are also often

poorly educated, with majority reporting less than five years of formal education. This contributes to limited knowledge of HIV transmission. A study conducted in 30 villages in the northern parts of Karnataka revealed that 40% of single men and 35% of married migrant men had non-marital sexual relationships in the last 12 months. For a long time, India has lived with the belief that migrants are at risk only at destination sites when they are away from home and their spouse. However, recent evidence proves otherwise. Returned migrants continue to fuel the epidemic since most infected migrants tend to return to source when they are sick. A study of married men found returned migrants were 3.86 times as likely to be HIV positive as compared to active married migrant men. Among men reporting sex with a non-spousal unpaid female sex partner in the past year, only 19% of men reported consistent condom use. This impacts the women and spouses of informal workers/migrants at the source, making them vulnerable to infections from their husband. RRE has been recognized as the world’s largest mass mobilization drive on HIV. Last year, around 80 lakh people were reached through the train and

outreach activities. Around 81,000 district resource persons were trained, 36,000 people got themselves tested for HIV and 28,000 people received general health check-up services. Impact assessment of RRE indicated that the comprehensive

knowledge of routes of HIV transmission, methods of prevention, condom use, STI prevention and treatment was significantly higher among respondents exposed to the RRE project compared to those not exposed.

Child development minister seeks 2 lakh crore to address issues of status of women, care of pregnant mothers and children under two, breast feeding, balanced nutrition, health, hygiene and sanitation. day after PM Manmohan Singh said child malnutrition was a “national shame”, women and child development minister Krishna Tirath said her ministry has sought nearly Rs 2 lakh crore for the next five years to restructure the government’s flagship scheme ICDS. “We have sought about Rs 2

lakh crore in the next five-year plan for the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme, which is four times the amount sanctioned in the previous plan,” Tirath said. She added that the survey, which said 42% of children under five years were malnourished, needed to be validated by a government study. “This is a survey by civil

society and we need to validate it by following it up with the government’s NFHS,’’ the minister said. The ministry is working on recommendations made by the PM’s Nutrition Council including introduction of a multi-sectoral programme to address maternal and child malnutrition in selected 200 high burden districts with a view to bring various national

programmes through strong institutional convergence at state, district, block and village level. The ministry plans to strengthen the ICDS scheme by introducing an anganwadi helper to focus on early childhood education and awareness and launch a nationwide information, education and communication campaign against malnutrition

Owning a car, Television increases heart attack risk by 27%

A new study mapping people’s possessions and physical activity against their risk for heart problems found a 27% increase in heart attacks among people who had a car and/or TV in comparison to those who didn’t.

O

wning a car or television set could be injurious to

health. A new study mapping people’s possessions and physical activity against their risk for heart problems found a 27% increase in heart attacks among people who had a car

and/or TV in comparison to those who didn’t. But the Interheart study spanning 52 nations and 25,000 people holds out the heartiest promise ever: the risk of heart attack can be neutralized with the mildest of physical activity. The study was published in the European

Heart Journal on Wednesday. Said Dr Aashish Contractor, a preventive cardiologist who is medical in-charge of Sunday’s marathon, “The study is heartening because it makes it clear that people don’t need strenuous exercises to reduce the risk of a heart attack. Even mild physical activity can be useful.’’ The INTERHEART study is a long-running global study (from February 1999 onwards) on heart attacks that includes data from India as well. A couple of years back it showed that Indians got heart-attacks a decade before their Caucasian counterparts; part of this study was done at Parel’s KEM Hospital. The new study was undertaken for obvious reasons: rising urbanization has led to a sedentary lifestyle across the world. “A sedentary lifestyle has become increasingly common in many developing countries, and with it, the incidence of metabolic syndrome, diabetes and CV (cardiovascular) disease has also risen,’’ said the study’s main author, Claes Held of Uppsala University in Sweden. The team identified various factors leading to ill-health: increasing urbanization, mechanization at work, more motorized transportation, “a societal structure that discourages walking but encourages the use of physical activity limiting devices (cars, escalators, and elevators), and the widespread availability

of appliances that promote sedentary behaviour such as the television (TV) and computers’’. The researchers then began mapping possessions-a TV at home or car to workversus the risk of a heart attack among people. After comparing the possessions of people who have undergone a heart attack against those who hadn’t, the association was clear: while people with a TV or car or both had a 27% greater risk of a heart attack, people who had none of these machines or owned cattle had the lowest risk. Incidentally, a Mumbaicentric study done by Lilavati Hospital’s endocrinologist Dr Shashank Joshi, who is the editor emeritus of the Journal of Association of Physicians of India, had shown a similar association. “This study ties in with our study that showed that for every gadget a family acquired it also put on eight kilos,’’ said Dr Joshi. “People put on ectopic fat (fat that gets deposited in cells and tissues that are not meant to store it). Considering that Indians have more body fat and less muscle than their Caucasian or African counterparts, this results in obesity that could lead to development of heart problems,’’ added Dr Joshi. But all is not lost in the equation linking sedentarianism-obesityheart problems. Said Dr Prafulla Kerkar, who heads the cardiology department of KEM Hospital, “The West

went through this a few decades back. Their growing realization has led them to shed sedentarianism. Some European buildings have lifts available only from the second floor onwards, forcing people to climb stairs. During lunch breaks, the western society prefers to pack in a bit of exercises or walk. ‘’ The Interheart study in fact focuses a lot on physical activity at leisure that can help control heart problems. “The study shows that people doing any activity can reduce their heart attack risk (in comparison to those who don’t do any activity at all) by almost 50%,’’ said Dr Aashish Contractor, who is attached to the Asian Heart Institute in Bandra-Kurla Complex. “The study says that people who do 30 minutes of activity per week in their leisure time could reduce their heart attack risk by 21%. Those who do 210 minutes of activity per week can reduce the risk by over 44%,’’ he pointed out. Those who pursued activity for 60-180 minutes per week could reduce their risk by 40%. “If we look at the figures, the INTERHEART study shows that one need not do fabulously hard work to stay fit. Even small steps-just 30 minutes per week-will help keep your heart healthy.’’ The Interheart study provides the simplest solution: “Ideally, we should adopt the example set by the Danish and commute by bike.’’

Fake letter blows lid off Air India cabin crew get hackers’ espionage claim part of salary, call off stir A

A

fter two days of protests and refusal to work, Air India flight attendants finally received a part of their pending sustenance allowance and salary. With this gesture from the airline management, the cabin crew members ended their protest and resumed work on Wednesday. But AI cannot look away from the issue of delayed salary payments yet. On January 6, the Aviation Industry Employees Guild, a union with 8,000 members including ground handlers, engineers,

booking office staff and check-in staff, issued a strike notice to the airline. The union’s grouse, too, was the continued delay in payment of salaries and incentives. George Abraham, general secretary of the guild, said they were hopeful that since the deputy labour commissioner had intervened, a solution will be reached and their salaries would be paid on time. People who have bought AI tickets for travel in the coming days need not worry about their

flight status. “Since the labour commissioner has put the union and management under notice, the strike will not take place,” said a source. Following the notice, the deputy labour commissioner has called the airline management and the union for conciliation talks, and the first meeting will be held on Thursday. The situation was defused on Thursday when protesting flight attendants, and many other AI employees, received their salaries for the month of November.

sensational claim by a hacker group -- that India was secretly granted access to the data networks of Apple, Nokia and Blackberry -- which triggered a formal US investigation, could be based on an elaborate hoax. Hacker group ‘Lords of Dharamraja’ claimed that India was granted backdoor access for surveillance of Nokia, Apple and Blackberry phones, and Military Intelligence used it to access communications of a US-China commission. To prove its claim, the group posted a six-page letter from the Directorate General of Military Intelligence (Foreign Division), which gave details of the information Indian intelligence had accessed from the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC). Military and intelligence sources on Wednesday said the letter of the Foreign Division of DGMI was a fake. There was no such communication, nor was there a Colonel Ishwar Singh, who purportedly signed the letter, posted in the division, they said. Sources also said the intelligence agencies had carried out an elaborate check of the six page letter, and concluded that it was a hoax that tried to mimic the military communication style such as fonts, formatting etc. But there were several dead giveaways in the letter that exposed the hoax. The USCC, emails of which were part of the purported MI letter, has however ordered an inquiry,

according to international media reports. The six-page letter put up on the net by the hacker group Lords of Dharamraja claimed that the ministry of defence and the smart phone operators had signed an agreement by which Military Intelligence was granted backdoor access in return for these companies’ continued presence in the Indian market. The letter said MI and CBI “have been conducting bilateral cellular and internet surveillance operations since April 2011”. Sources laughed off the claims. While CBI carries out federal criminal investigation and has no role in intelligence gathering, MI does not carry out any significant interception and surveillance work. Among military intelligence agencies, it is the tri-service Signal Intelligence which carries out such heavy duty interceptions. Otherwise, it is the Research and Analysis Wing and National Technical Research Organisation that does aggressive interceptions for India. Lords of Dharamraja had also claimed that it had stolen the source code of Symantec’s anti-virus system. “As of now, we start sharing with all our brothers and followers information from the Indian Military Intelligence servers, so far we have discovered within the Indian Spy Programme source codes of a dozen software companies which have signed agreements with Indian TANCS programme and CBI,” the group said in a statement posted on a website called Pastebin.v

NASA spacecraft hurtling toward Mars prepared to fire its thrusters Wednesday to put itself on course for an August landing. Engineers closely tracked the one-ton rover nicknamed Curiosity, which has been cruising along since rocketing from Earth last November. The engine firing is the most important task Curiosity will perform during its 352-million-mile flight to the red planet, but it’s not unprecedented. Previous robotic explorers have had to adjust their paths several times en route to ensure a bull’s-eye landing. “Just because this is a welltraveled road to Mars given the number of trips we’ve made, I’m very careful to not let that experience cause us to be complacent,” said Arthur Amador of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the $2.5 billion mission. At the time of the course correction, Curiosity will have racked up 80 million miles and will be traveling at 10,200 mph relative to the Earth. The day before, the team uploaded commands calling for the spacecraft to fire its eight thrusters for nearly three hours on Wednesday afternoon, redirecting it closer to its target. Though it will execute the move without human interference,

engineers will be on standby in the off chance that they have to abort. “We should be very, very close to our desired aim point at the top of the Martian atmosphere” after the maneuver, Amador said. If Curiosity did not tweak its position, it will miss Mars altogether. Engineers did this by design to prevent the rocket’s upper stage that hoisted the spacecraft from hitting the red planet. Once Curiosity separated from the upper stage and was on its way, the team has several chances to fine-tune its trajectory before touchdown. Curiosity, whose formal name is the Mars Science Laboratory, is aiming for a 96-mile-wide crater near the Martian equator that boasts a towering mountain in the center. The six-wheel, nuclearpowered rover planned to drive to the lower flanks and examine the layered deposits to determine whether the area once had conditions capable of supporting microbial life. Armed with a suite of instruments including a laser to zap into bedrock and a jackhammer, Curiosity is more sophisticated than previous Mars surface spacecraft. Despite its capabilities, it won’t be able to detect life. Instead, it will hunt for the chemical building blocks of life during its two-year mission. Since Curiosity is too heavy to parachute to the surface, it will

be lowered using a tether system similar to the sky cranes used to plop heavy equipment into remote sectors on Earth - a nail-biting move come August and a first for NASA. Even before arrival, Curiosity has not sat idle. Several weeks after

launch, Curiosity turned on its radiation detector to monitor highenergy particles streaming from the sun and exploding stars. Once at Mars, it will measure radiation levels on the surface. Curiosity’s voyage contrasts

sharply with another space probe targeted at the Mars moon Phobos. Launched weeks earlier than Curiosity, Russia’s PhobosGround probe got stranded in Earth’s orbit and was expected to fall back to Earth this weekend.

Sexual harassment law may soon cover domestic workers

D

omestic workers could soon have the right to complain against sexual harassment. The women and child development ministry is likely to review its position and accept the recommendations of a parliamentary panel to include domestic workers within the ambit of the ‘Protection of women against sexual harassment at workplace bill’. When asked if domestic workers will be brought within the ambit of the bill, WCD minister Krishna Tirath said, “We are in favour of inclusion of domestic workers in the sexual harassment bill.” The ministry is still working on details of how a place of residence will be monitored like an office or institution. The bill provides for a secure working environment for women and mandates setting up of internal committees both in the formal and informal sectors to ensure that complaints are addressed. The ministry’s change of stance comes after a parliamentary committee dismissed government’s view that there were “practical difficulties’’ in implementation of the law within the confines of a home. comprise

30% of the female workforce in the unorganized sector. There are 47.50 lakh registered domestic workers in the country. Incidentally, the National Commission for Women (NCW) - set up for protection of women’s rights which works under the ministry of women and child development - also shared the panel’s view. The commission said that reservations of enforcing the provisions of the bill within the privacy of the home were “unfounded’’ as the Domestic Violence Act had broken this myth allowing legal scrutiny and extending protection to the confines of the home. The committee had received representations from several domestic workers associations including 5,000 postcards advocating “domestic work is work and domestic workers are workers’’ for inclusion. The sexual harassment bill was introduced in Lok Sabha on December 7, 2010 and was referred to the standing committee on December 30, 2010. It submitted its report in the winter session last year.

Facebook, Google move court against summons

T

he Delhi High Court Wednesday issued a notice to the Delhi Police on a petition filed against summons issued by a trial court to 21 websites, including Facebook, Google, Yahoo and YouTube, for allegedly hosting obscene and derogatory content. The move came as Facebook and Google approached the high court, challenging the trial court’s

order. Justice Suresh Kait also issued notice to Vinay Rai who had filed the petition in the trial court against the websites alleging they were hosting obscene and derogatory content. Senior counsel Neeraj Kishan Kaul, appearing for Google, said that third parties were uploading the contents, not Google. ‘It is the third party who is

uploading the content, not me. I am a passive provider, and so I cannot be held liable in the case,’ he argued. He further argued that people who were actually doing it are not being made party in the case. Siddhartha Luthra, appearing for Facebook told the court that materials were not offensive as far as Facebook (India) was concerned.

Meanwhile, Rai’s counsel said: ‘By showing objectionable material, they (the websites) are earning in crores. Every time people click the content, the website earns the money. These firangis are spreading cultural terrorism in the country.’ The magistrate of the trial court had observed that the material submitted by the complainant contained obscene pictures and

derogatory articles pertaining to various Hindu deities, Prophet Muhammad and Jesus Christ. The trial court had also directed the central government to take immediate and appropriate steps on the objectionable content of the sites and file its report by Jan 13. The matter will come up Thursday for further hearing.

Central Asian sex workers: Missions told to scan women visitors from region

According to official estimates, there are 3,000-3,500 sex workers from Commonwealth of Independent States countries in Delhi alone.

T

he foreign ministry has asked its missions in central Asian nations such as Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan as well as in Ukraine and Russia to re-examine visa applications of women between 15 and 40 years on the grounds of a spike in the number of sex workers from these

January 2012 Edition

regions reaching India. The advice has been issued just ahead of assembly elections and although there may be no connection, apart from larger volumes of unaccounted money sloshing around during the poll season, Indian officials have been asked to rigorously interview

female visa applicants. The move is likely to kick up a controversy as it typecasts visa applicants from these nations. Foreign countries regularly scan visa applicants quietly across racial, religious and national profiles, but screening for likely sex workers might be rarer.

Women are to be questioned if there is a shade of doubt about their motives for visiting India. “Indian missions in the region have been in touch with South Block... and it has been conveyed to them to thoroughly screen applications of women who are 15-40 years of age,” said a

source. Central Asia visa scan a delicate task The directive to missions in central Asian nations to scan visa applicants to filter out potential sex workers is perhaps the first time the government has taken a serious view of “sex trade” from the region, given that the missions are otherwise engaged in an active outreach as India plays catch-up with China in cultivating ties with energy-rich countries. In fact, sources said, the government is being very discreet in trying to cap the “influx” of sex workers from a region that is friendly with New Delhi. A source stressed: “There is no question of it being a deterrent, though, for visitors as all care will be taken to ensure that no genuine tourist is denied visa.” About 40,000-45,000 tourists from central Asia travel to India every year. The clampdown comes ahead of assembly elections in five states, at a time when the political system is awash with funds that can be used for any inducement, from liquor to other services. According to official estimates, there are 3,000-3,500 sex workers from Commonwealth of Independent States countries in Delhi alone. Lax visa rules until now have allowed many women to illegally stay back in India.

The joy of Microsoft’s ‘avoid ghetto’ GPS patent P

edestrians have sometimes felt neglected when it comes to GPS direc-

The gist of it seems to be that Microsoft’s GPS--which will reportedly be inserted into Windows Phones in the future--will use input from more varied and up-todate sources in order to create suggested routes. Among these sources are crime statistics. Which has led some to the thought that this will somehow be an insult to poor neighborhoods. What is unclear, at least from my reading of the patent--which isn’t written by anything resembling a human hand or mind--is what kind of crime statistics the GPS might choose to use. It’s one thing to avoid areas where there might have occurred physical assaults and gunfire. It’s another to avoid, say, places

tions. Indeed, not so long ago, one lady sued Google because the directions its map offered led her (she believed) to be struck by a car. Now Microsoft has been granted a patent that is designed to make its maps more pedestrianfriendly. Somehow, this patent has immediately been dubbed the “avoid ghetto” feature.

where burglaries are popular, as one suspects quite a few allegedly nice areas are subject to burglars’ desires. With some areas, past performance isn’t a guarantee of future results. What if someone using a route from this system does get mugged, shot, assaulted, or robbed? Would they feel entitled to sue Microsoft because the

route was supposed to be “ghettofree”? The patent talks about the quality of the information. But quality is a subjective notion, so one wonders just whose assessment of quality will be deemed significant. The patent also holds within it some other little gems. It seeks to help the pedestrian avoid “harsh temperatures.” Some people like

harsh temperatures, but this system will also store people’s pedestrian information to offer, one assumes, a more personalized heat-level for the route. How personalized should it be, though? My eyes perform slightly odd twitches when I read this sentence from the patent: “Various features can integrate with route presentment, such as integrating

an advertisement targeted to a pedestrian with a direction set.” Is this suggesting that Windows Phones will give pedestrians a route that will take them past specific ads? What a curious and slightly mind-altering thought. One wonders whether those who use the system might also be offered an “avoid ads” option.

Music Review :

Agneepath

ince the day Dharma Productions’ unveiled the first look of their 2012 remake of yesteryear hit Agneepath, one thing was for sure – that the film will be devoid of Dharma Productions’ trademark extravagant song sequences. That is, stars lavishly dressed in Manish Malhotras dancing to Farah Khan’s directions with 1,000,000 extras in the background to a familiar tune claiming to be new. Accordingly, audiences and critics alike had no hopes or expectations of a typical Dharma Productions soundtrack from Agneepath, a presumption that was affirmed when Ajay and Atul Gogvale of Singham fame were announced as the music directors of the film rather than the likes of Shankar-Eshaan-Loy and Vishal-Shekar. On the outset Agneepath’s soundtrack is made up of 6 tracks, no remixes, and features the vocal talents of Sunidhi Chauhan , Shreya Ghosal, Roop Kumar Rathod (Tujh Mein Rab Dikta Hai – Rab Ne Bana De Jodi), Sonu Nigam , Sukwinder Singh, Anand Raj Anand (Ishq Samundar – Kaante) and Udit Narayan. Chikni Chameli gets the ball rolling and smashes all pre-conceived notions about Agneepath being an out-and-out situational soundtrack with little to no mass appeal. While Chikni Chameli’s mass appeal is no doubt signed and sealed, arguably it is still Sonu Nighm

open for a little critical analysis. Firstly, props to Ajay-Atul for this energetic item number that is rich with Marathi musical arrangements and does not have a single dull moment. That being said, their choice to have Shreya Ghosal sing the number is not entirely agreeable. The track would have been far more impressive if the reigning queens of item numbers, Sunidhi Chauhan (Chandigarh Ki Star – Bhuddah Hoga Tera Baap and Shake It Saiyan – Rascals), Ritu Pathak (Razia – Thank You and Jalebi Bai – Double Dhamaal) or Mamta Sharma (Munni Badnaam – Dabangg) had sung the number. Shreya’s rendition sounds tentative and calculated and why not, given her foray into the world of item numbers after singing softer romantic numbers for quite some time. In any event, she is definitely effective judging by the way the song’s making waves amongst the aam janta. Finally, even though the owners of the eyes glued to Katrina Kaif’s cleavage and navel might beg to differ, Amitabh Bhattacharya’s touch-in-cheek lyrics is also a big portion of Chikni Chameli’s appeal. It is not as catchy as ‘Le Zandu Bam huyi…’ but he sure does get the Marathi nuances right in line with 70s hits like Mungda (Inkaar). After the myriad of energy and volume, Ajay-Atul take a minimalist approach with O Saiyaan. Roop Kumar Rathod

brings Bhattacharya romantic poetry to life in a glorious fashion while Ajay-Atul’s choice to feature minimal music beautifully showcases the extents of Rathod’s vocal talents. Those dancing to Chikni Chameli may not appreciate this number but those with an ear for fine music will definitely enjoy O Saiyaan. Next is Gun Gun Guna, an uplifting number with joyous musical arrangements with Marathi music at its helm. Bhattacharya’s lyrics are sweet and hopeful and on a mission to cheer-up the sombre and are more of less effective. It is a celebratory number and who better to celebrate with than Sunidhi Chuahan whose vocals could not have painted a clearer and brighter picture of

Bhattacharya’s lyrics. Sunidhi is briefly accompanied by Udit Narayan who is a delight to listen to what with his appearance getting rarer year after year. Further, Gun Gun Guna just might give Dharma Productions the narrow chance to picturise a number ala Bole Chudiyan from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. In summary, Agneepath is a bit of a surprise. It was destined to be a situational soundtrack with limited widespread appeal and while it is a situation soundtrack in all respects Chikni Chameli has ensured that the masses wrapped around her slim navel. In doing so it has given Agneepath the chance to foray into a larger demographic and giving the other not-so-mass-appealing

number more than a snow flake’s chance in hell. Thus, if one is to look past Chikni Chameli (granted, a hard thing to do) they will see that Agneepath’s O Saiyaan, Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin and Shah Ka Rutba are real class acts. Gun Gun Guna is also a close runner up in any case with Shree Deva Ganesha only appealing those who seek it. In any event AjayAtul have created an impressive albums that has compelled music enthusiasts, if not the general public, to eagerly look forward to their next soundtrack. So by all means let Chikni Chameli entice you to the music stands (digital or otherwise) but in doing so also give the rest of the soundtrack a fair go.

iPad 3 in March, iPad 4 in October, according to rumor

O

verlaid on your view of the real world, your Netconnected glasses show navigation instructions, prompt you with the name of the person you’re talking to, and run an ad-blocker app to turn billboards into wallpaper with soothing nature photos. And with one display for each eye, you see in 3D, so you can turn the outisde world into an immersive videogame. The only problem is that you look like a total dork walking around with bulky electronic devices stuck to your face. Vuzix, which sells such products, says it’s got the problem licked with a new technology developed on its own and licensed from Nokia

t h a t it’ll unveil at CES. Its approach, which Vuzix calls Smart glasses, uses waveguides that channel light from a display engine to a 1.4mm-thick lens mounted in front of the users’ eyes. The lens captures what’s in front of the viewer, then mixes the computer and real-world imagery. It works in anything from night to broad daylight, and can be used to record what a person sees, too. “And, all this technology neatly fits into the temples & lenses of a conventional pair of eyewear!” the

company gushes. It’s not clear if it’ll fit into your budget, of course, but Vuzix hopes to sell the glasses for consumers as well as for commercial and industrial uses. These latter two markets will be the first Vuzix targets, starting in the fall of 2012--”from standalone solutions for night vision and firstresponder use to fully Internetconnected and geospatially aware

devices f o r amazing augmented reality applications,” Vuzix said. Would Apple release two iPads in one year? It’s possible, but keep in mind that the same trade publication that ran this rumor also predicted a second iPad in 2011.

T h a t o b v i ously didn’t happen. It sounds more likely in 2012, as there is expected to be tighter competition (from Windows 8, a Google tablet, and perhaps a larger Kindle Fire) than there was in 2011. Yes, we’re getting into the season where iPad rumors fly in from all angles, with no indication of what’s plausible and what isn’t. Within the next month or two, it will build to a feverish pitch that will take us all back to last summer; that was when iPhone 5 rumors covered the entire gamut of possibilities. Prepare for exhaustion.

Malware can empty Vuzix’s video glasses out your bank a/c minimize the dork factor Doing online banking frequently? Beware, as cyber-criminals have launched a new malware that not just steals your money from your bank, but also offers false reassurance that it’s still there, experts have warned.

O

verlaid on your view of the real world, your Netconnected glasses show navigation instructions, prompt you with the name of the person you’re talking to, and run an adblocker app to turn billboards into wallpaper with soothing nature photos. And with one display for each eye, you see in 3D, so you can turn the outisde world into an immersive videogame. The only problem is that you look like a total dork walking around with bulky electronic devices stuck to your face. Vuzix, which sells such products, says it’s got the problem licked with a new technology developed on its own and licensed from Nokia that it’ll unveil at CES. “And, all this technology neatly fits into the temples & lenses of a conventional pair of eyewear!” the company gushes. It’s not clear if

The attack, a new version of trojan horse SpyEye software that targets computers using Windows, has been detected in the United States and the United Kingdom. According to Trusteer, a security company which detected the attack, the software, which steals your bank passwords to give access to your account, waits for you to enter the same banking details before “adjusting” what you see.

it’ll fit into your budget, of course, but Vuzix hopes to sell the glasses for consumers as well as for commercial and industrial uses. These latter two markets will be the first Vuzix targets, starting in the fall of 2012--”from stand-

alone solutions for night vision and first-responder use to fully Internet-connected and geospatially aware devices for amazing augmented reality applications,” Vuzix said.

“The next time the victim visits their online banking site, the malware hides the fraudulent transactions, as well as artificially changing the total balance,” it said. “As a result, the deceived customer has no idea that their account has been ‘taken over’, nor that any fraudulent transactions have taken place. SpyEye is a tweak of the Zeus crimeware kit that grabs web form data within browsers,” says the Naked Security blog at web security experts Sophos.

The idea is to gives criminals more time to use debit card details on fraudulent transactions without the person realizing it’s happening, the Daily Mail reported.

“The new Trojan, instead of intercepting or diverting email messages, hides bogus transactions even after users have logged out and then logged back into their accounts. With hi-tech cyber attacks such as SpyEye, there are few visible signs that anything is wrong. There are defences, though - ensure your browser is up to date, manually updating it if necessary,” experts said.

The malware is designed in a way that when one visits his or her online bank, there will be no trace of the transactions that cyber-criminals are using to empty the bank account. Worse, the balance will also be adjusted on screen so it looks as if nothing is happening, Trusteer claimed.

Thus, it is important that users should ensure that the “antiphishing option is switched on” in their web browser that which will check for “blacklisted” websites and prevent the browser from being directed to the “fake” version that delivers your bank statement, they added.

Juhi Parmar wins ‘Bigg Boss 5’

T

hree months of patience and fair play paid rich dividends to TV actress Juhi Parmar, who Saturday won the fifth season of the controversial reality show “Bigg Boss” and the prize money of Rs.1 crore. The “Kumkum” fame actress, who was among the first 13 contestants to enter the house Oct 2, 2011, pipped actress Mahek Chahal and Siddharth Bhardwaj to win the show, which was described as high on fights and low on entertainment quotient by season three participant, actor-filmmaker Kamaal R. Khan. She is the second female contestant to win the show, as Shweta Tiwari had taken away the trophy in the last season. Juhi, 31, had earlier participated in other reality shows - “Pati Patni Aur Woh” and “Maa Exchange” and was seen indulging in lots of arguments, but in “Bigg Boss”, she played the game more patiently. Many inmates and viewers were not so happy with Juhi’s friendship with her inmate Akashdeep Saigal aka Sky, who got embroiled in the ugliest fights on the show, but it didn’t stop her from winning the show. Others in the top five included Amar Upadhyay and Sky. Juhi too had her share of arguments with contestants like Shraddha Sharma, Amar, Siddharth and Mahek, but at the same time she enjoyed a good friendship with Raageshwari Loomba, Pooja Bedi, IndoCanadian porn star Sunny Leone as well as Sky. What made her stand out was her patience and quality of lending everybody

a patient ear in the “Bigg Boss 5”, which was co-hosted by Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan. The finale was graced by actor Imran Khan and filmmaker Karan Johar, who came to promote their forthcoming film “Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu”. Johar had expressed that he wanted Juhi to win the show, and that his mother, Hiroo Johar, a fan of the show, feels that she was the most promising contender for the winner’s trophy. The prediction came true. Juhi was ecstatic to see her husband, TV actor Sachin Shroff, her parents and her mother-in-law upon her exit from the secluded house, where she spent 98 days without being connected with anything or anyone outside the four parapets of the house. The finale saw several performances, including those by Sunny, Malaika Arora, Pooja Missra, Rakhi Sawant, transgender activist Laxmi Narayan Tripathi and Shonali. Even Shakti Kapoor danced with all the girls who entered “Bigg Boss 5” - bringing the show to a full circle. Malaika added spice to the finale by dancing on numbers like “Chhaiya chhaiya”, “Chhammak chhallo” and “Honth raseele” while Rakhi grooved to “Chikni chameli”. Salman and Sanjay too shook a leg together, making it a treat for the audience. “Bigg Boss 5” began with an eclectic mix of celebrities - controversial models, actresses, a wrestler, as well as a proud transgender. The season saw former Miss Afghanistan

Vida Samadzai, who was banned in the country for wearing a bikini; Nihita Biswas, wife of “Bikini Killer” Charles Sobhraj, VJ Pooja Missra, actress Pooja Bedi, model-actress Shonali, popular host Mandeep Bevli, and Rajasthani folk dancer Gulabo Sapera. Woman wrestler Sonika Kaliraman was also seen on the show, but she left within a week of her entry as she was pregnant. Laxmi also added drama to the season, while guest appearances were made by social activist Swami Agnivesh, Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds and s u m o wrestler Ya m a m o toyama.

Red Wine Does Not Appear to Raise Breast Cancer Risk F

or several years now, scientists have warned that there is a link between alcohol and breast cancer. What’s less clear, however, is whether the type of alcohol matters. Now researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the University of Southern California say substances in red wine may set it apart. They found that drinking red wine in moderation appears to counter the risks associated with alcohol. Dr. Glenn Braunstein, one of the study’s authors, tells Wine Spectator that women who drink white wine may want to consider switching to red. Alcohol consumption has been consistently linked to a heightened risk of breast cancer in women. Scientists believe alcohol inhibits breast cancer tumor suppression in women with certain genes. Breast cancer can occur when the conversion of the hormone androgen into estrogen goes unchecked in the body. Substances called aromatase inhibitors are believed to ameliorate this process. Aromatase inhibitors occur naturally in grape skins. CedarsSinai researchers wanted to test if aromatase inhibitors have an impact with red wine consumption, but not white, since red wine

January 2012 Edition

absorbs many compounds during maceration on the skins. “It was a hypothesis that wasn’t proven by the study,” said Dr. Braunstein, “but [the evidence] is supportive of red wine having a positive effect on the hormonal milieu, making it less conducive to stimulating growth of breast cancer cells.” The results of the study will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Women’s Health. Braunstein and his team provided 8 ounces of red wine daily to 36 women and 8 ounces of white to another 36. After one month, the scientists reversed the servings. Blood was collected twice during the women’s menstrual cycle to measure hormone levels. When women were drinking red wine, the study reports, hormone levels were at much more favorable levels. “These data suggest that red wine is an aromatase inhibitor and may explain the observation that red wine does not appear to increase breast cancer risk,” the study concludes. Braunstein added that the results don’t mean white wine consumption increases the risk of breast cancer, but rather it may lack the same protective ingredients found in red wine.

Five ways to experience Blue Mountains beauty You’ll love the blue-hazed beauty of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area – one million hectares of tall forests, sandstone cliffs, canyons, waterfalls and bushland. Take in the breathtaking panoramas on a bushwalk, mountain bike, climbing rocks, canyoning or abseiling. Marvel at natural attractions like Wentworth Falls and the Three Sisters - a trio of rocky pinnacles named after an Aboriginal legend. Explore the underground rivers and chambers of Jenolan Caves, then walk the historic Six Foot Track to Katoomba. In amongst the sandstone outcrops and eucalypt forests you’ll find great dining, luxury retreats, the world’s steepest railway and a vibrant community of artists.

Go walkabout with an Aboriginal guide

Discover a rich Aboriginal heritage in the Blue Mountains - from the legend of the Three Sisters to ancient art and ceremonial sites. Visit the shallow cave of Lyrebird Dell, an Aboriginal campsite around 12,000 years old. See fine hand stencils and prints at Red Hands Cave near Glenbrook. You can reach the cave on a walking trail past Camp Fire Creek, where many years ago an Aboriginal tribe left axe-grinding grooves on volcanic rock. Go walkabout with a local Darug guide and learn about the songlines that connect sacred sites. See bark and body painting demonstrations, taste bush tucker and swim in a crystal clear billabong under a rainbow waterfall. Get up close to wildlife, explore sandstone caves and listen to the Dreamtime stories that wove this wilderness.

Walking, with great gulps of mountain air

Soak up the Blue Mountains scenery – streams, waterfalls, forested valleys, dark ravines and sheer cliffs – on one of the many well-marked walking trails. Follow the original 1884 horse track from Katoomba to Jenolan Caves on the three-day Six Foot Track. Or follow the easy Princes Rock Walk to a lookout over Wentworth Falls, Kings Tableland and Mount Solitary. You can wade and boulder-hop your way down the Glenbrook Gorge on the Glenbrook Gorge Track. Or creep up the sheer cliffs around Wentworth Falls on the challenging National Pass. Trek the Pulpit Rock Track past swamps, eucalypt forests and open heathland to be rewarded with a 280-degree panorama of the blue gum forest of Grose Valley.

Next to natural attractions

You’ll marvel at nature’s majestic statements in the Blue Mountains. Pay homage to the Three Sisters from Katoomba. Then visit Wentworth Falls, a picturesque waterfall on the edge of the Jamison Valley. Watch it plunge almost 300 metres and check out the valley views from the walks that circle it. Stand on the top of the narrow sandstone outcrop of Hanging Rock and hear your voice echo through the enormous, forested valley below. Don’t miss the underground rivers, prehistoric formations and huge chambers of Jenolan Caves, the world’s oldest open underground cave system. Get goosebumps on a ghost tour or enjoy a monthly cave concert with natural acoustics and fairytale ambience. In Mount Tomah Botanic Gardens, you can step back in time with the Wollemi Pine, one of the world’s oldest and rarest plants.

With high tea or a hot dinner

The Blue Mountains is a place to eat, drink and indulge. Lunch on Leura's pretty tree-lined streets, then browse the galleries, boutiques and bric-a-brac stores. Fine dine in front of a roaring fire or do coffee and cake in an art deco café in Katoomba. Shop for gourmet food at Blackheath or take high tea in a majestic, historic home at Jenolan Caves. During June, July and August, you can embrace the Yulefest celebrations with a Christmas roast and pudding around a roaring fire. Wherever you eat and drink, you’ll love the food prepared with care and the seductive mountain settings.

On a long, leisurely drive

Take on adventure on the Greater Blue Mountains Drive – a series of linked drives and discovery trails that circle the 10,000 square kilometer Blue Mountains World Heritage area. You can journey to surrounding regions such as Macarthur and the Southern Highlands, , Mudgee, the Hunter Valley and the Hawkesbury. Or explore magical places within the Blue Mountains – including Kurrajong, The Mounts, Blackheath and Megalong – on 18 discovery trails. If you tire of being behind the wheel, jump on the Zig Zag Railway, a vintage steam train that follows the original line from Bell to Lithgow. January 2012 Edition

Shaurya Chauhan in Krrish 3

M

odel-turned-actor Shaurya Chauhan has been roped in by filmmaker Rakesh Roshan to play a negative character in Krrish 3. The film went on the floors in October and Chauhan has already shot a couple of scenes with the cast. “When the Roshans were casting

for the film, they were on the lookout for someone with an adventurous streak. Fashion photographer Sabu Cyril, who is a good friend, recommended my name for the role as he felt that I would fit in perfectly,” says Chauhan, who has been part of TV reality show Dadagiri. “I had to go through an extensive look-

test before I bagged the role. The first time Rakesh Roshan and I met, it was at an airport. I was then called for a look-test and a make-up artiste from London was called in to style me. During that period, my look in the film and the costumes I will be seen wearing onscreen were finalised.” The actor has been asked

to lose weight for the film and is also undergoing an extensive two-month training in gymnastics. “It’s an action film and I will have to do stunts. So, I need to be physically fit. I will be undergoing a two-month training in gymnastics so that my body will be agile.” Discussing her daily routine,

Chauhan adds, “I start my day with a workout session that lasts for an-hour-and-a-half. There’s another an-hour-anda-half session in the evening too before I wrap up. As for the rest of the day, it’s spend on the sets.” Chauhan’s debut film Saada Adda is set for release.

Sonu Sood back in Dabangg 2? B

y now it is c o m m o n knowledge that no one says no to Salman Khan. It’s also well-known among his close friends and family that Salman expects complete loyalty from them. And this could mean making professional compromises as well. Given his emotional approach to his friends, one isn’t surprised to hear that Salman has “requested” (read: ordered) Sonu Sood to march right back into Dabangg 2.

Sonu Sood

Sonu, it would be recalled, had politely declined the offer to continue his association with the Dabangg brand. On a suggestion made by Salman, Sonu was supposed to play his character Cheddi Singh’s twin brother in Dabangg 2. But then, the Dabangg 2 script brought in another arch-villain to be played

by Prakash Raj. That’s when Sonu decided to gently get out of the way. But now Salman wants him back. According to sources Salman feels Sonu Sood is integral to the Dabangg franchise. Apparently, when he heard that Sonu had opted out and that Arbaaz had decided to write Sonu’s role out of Dabangg 2, Salman was none too pleased. However, as other components of Dabangg 2 began to fall into place, Salman began to feel Sonu must be part of the sequel. Says a friend of Sonu Sood, “Salman asked Sonu to return to Dabangg at his birthday bash in Panvel last week. This happened in front of Arbaaz, Sohail and a whole lot of other people. Sonu was embarrassed. He didn’t know what to

say because this was not the first time Salman had asked him. Earlier in Hyderabad Salman had broached the subject, saying Dabangg wouldn’t be the same if the two of them -Salman and Sonu-didn’t share a climax fight. Sonu loves Salman to death. But at this juncture of his career Sonu isn’t sure if he wants to do a marginal part when he has a solohero film Maximum ready for release. However for Salman, Sonu would agree to return to Dabangg.” We probed a little more and discovered that the real reason for Salman’s keenness to get Sonu Sood back into Dabangg is the bare-chested fistfight at the end. Says a source, “Salman can’t do that with Prakash Raj, for obvious reasons.”

Saif Ali Khan

It’s final and irreversible. The long-delayed Saif Ali Khan production Agent Vinod is finally releasing on March 23. Confirming this as the final release date director, Sriram Raghavan reveals that the celebrity couple shot for the last day of Agent Vinod on December 24. Says the soft spoken director, “My shooting with Saif and Kareena is over. We are all done. Saif and Kareena did their last shooting for my film on December 24 and left for their holiday. We are now in post-production work. The release date is March 23.” The Kareena- Saif wedding would follow

in the last week of March or the first week of April. This confirms our earlier report that the next schedule of Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine has been preponed from the end of February to the middle of February to accommodate the promotion and release of Agent Vinod into Kareena’s clogged schedule, followed by the wedding and honeymoon. Says a source, “After the release of Agent Vinod, the wedding will happen immediately. Kareena and Saif don’t want to delay it any more.”

elieve it or not, but the fact is that PLAYERS has had the biggest release in New Zealand. Even bigger than DON 2. The reason being, PLAYERS has been filmed extensively in New Zealand and had garnered tremendous mileage in the process. To capitalize on the craze of the film, the distributors have released the film with 11 prints in

two of the biggest cinemas chains there -- Event and Hoyts. The release of PLAYERS is bigger than DON 2, which was released with 9 prints in New Zealand. The distributor of PLAYERS, Pritesh Raniga, is expecting a huge opening in New Zealand. The movie has been targeted at non-Indian customers and mainstream media, besides the avid moviegoers there.

Planning your wardrobe? Read Sonam’s advice S he’s known for her Grecian gowns, chunky neck-pieces and high heels. Yes, we are talking about Sonam Kapoor, who has stamped her place as Bollywood’s fashionista. The lady was recently in Pune to promote her latest film. In- between breaks, she gave some tips to CS readers on planning their wardrobe this season: 1 Six inches above the ground Wear really high heels. I think high heels add to the look of any outfit, the higher the better. A multi coloured stiletto with a plain- Jane outfit is one haute look. Shimmer on your heels or red stilettos with a tiny black dress is one party outfit that can never go wrong. My favourites heels are a pair from Dior. 2 Sequins Although sequins could be a fashion disaster in the making if they aren’t the right size or right colour, a sequined dress is in vogue. The best options are a tiny black sequined dress, a sliver sequined dress with a red clutch or the classic black sequined gown. Make sure that your accessories are neutral if you are

wearing a dress full of bling.

3 Leggings to the resue Black tights are in this season, and the next and the season after that. They are the most easily available piece of clothing. You can team them up with brightly coloured tunics and funky pumps for a perfect party outfit. Add a shimmery hair-band and your ready for a grand entrance. 4 Layer me over Layering is one of the safest ways of dressing up for a party. Especially this winter season using a jacket or a shrug not only adds some life to your ensemble, but also keeps you warm. A purple jacket or a chic black one is the perfect way to ensure you make heads turn at the party. A nice jacket over a tee will easily give you the semiformal look. 5 Wear your attitude on your sleeve Dress up or dress down, the one thing that you will always have is your attitude. Hold your head up high and stride into the party venue like a fashionista! Don’t be too conscious of your make up, have fun and enjoy the party. Attitude is your best accessory.

Great course options. Great pathways to University.

Vidhya Balan’s

ith the start of the season of awards shows, Vidya Balan’s name has appeared on the list of most wanted actresses to perform at these events. In fact, an industry veteran reveals that till last year, Vidya was never even considered for such shows. Our source points out, “While Vidya is a very good actress, she was far from being the glamour girl. She was not perceived as ‘oomphy’ as Kareena, Katrina, Deepika, Priyanka or even Anushka when it comes to performing on stage. “ However, the stupendous success of The Dirty Picture

has turned the scales in Vidya’s favour. As our informer says, “Apart from being approached to perform on the ‘Ooh la la’ and ‘Naaka mukka’ tracks, she’s also being offered a handsome fee, averaging to about Rs 50 lakh per event. “ Mohammed Morani, one of the top event organisers confirms that Vidya is very much in demand this year. “A chartbusting song and a super hit film is what is required of a star for the award functions. “ Declining to talk about the fee that is being offered to Vidya, Morani maintained, “Vidya is getting good money. “

Delhi Daredevils shell out $2m for Kevin Pietersen

S

January 2012 Edition

washbuckling England batsman Kevin Pietersen is all set to join Delhi Daredevils for IPL 5. His services, which could be available for only about eight of the 16 league games, will cost $2 million, according to IPL sources. But the amount could not be officially confirmed. The Delhi team has been on the lookout for a middle-order batsman and has picked Pietersen in the third transfer of the IPL trading window for Season 5. In the 2011 auction, Deccan Chargers bought Pietersen for $650,000, but he was unavailable for the entire season due to injury. Of the $2 million, Pietersen will get $650,000 and a sizeable part of the balance of $1.35 million, with the rest going to Chargers. In the 2009 IPL auction, Pietersen was the highest-paid player ($1.55 million) along with former England teammate Andrew Flintoff. In 2011, Gautam Gambhir was the highest-paid cricketer with $2.4 million.

This year, Mumbai Indians have bought Dinesh Karthik for $2.3 million from Kings XI Punjab. Pietersen said he was looking forward to the experience of playing alongside someone of the calibre of Virender Sehwag. “I’m looking forward to a wonderful time with the Delhi Daredevils. It will be a great experience to play in the same squad as Sehwag.” In a press release, TA Sekar, head (cricket) of GMR Sports which owns the Delhi franchise, said: “Kevin’s addition would strengthen the Delhi Daredevils squad this season. We are pleased to add Kevin to our line-up. He brings rich experience and an explosive quality to our batting and can be a more than a handy off-spinner as well. We are sure that Kevin will help us to be very competitive this season and the Delhi Daredevils fans will enjoy this addition.

3rd Test: Team India faces 'green' reality at Perth

P

ERTH: Had anyone from the Indian contingent taken a five-minute walk from their hotel to the WACA ground on Sunday, they would have been hit by 'green' reality. The pitch that was being used for Sunday's Big Bash game between Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers had a healthy tinge of green despite it being a T20 tie. The carry to the wicketkeeper was exceptional. The worrying part for India is that but for the pitch, the entire playing arena, including the square, resembles a shiny green carpet. WACA curator Cameron Sutherland made no bones about the fact that the pitch here would offer plenty of pace and bounce. "It will play pretty similar to last year against England, where it had a bit of colour and had a bit of grass on it," Sutherland was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald. "It's kind of a different grass we've used over the last couple of years. It's really fine. So even if you leave grass on it and it has a bit of colour in

January 2012 Edition

it, it doesn't seam excessively. It just gives a bit to the new ball and then it settles into a pretty good batting wicket," Sutherland added. It is the kind of wicket that has pace written all over it, and it would need a very brave captain to even contemplate playing a finger spinner here in spite of the bounce. The last time they had played here - in 2007-08 - India had knocked Australia off their perch at this very ground, long considered to be the home team's fortress. Like Dhoni's boys, Anil Kumble's team too had come to Perth 0-2 down in the series, and pulled one back, thanks to some gritty batting and excellent seam and swing bowling by the likes of RP Singh, Irfan Pathan and Ishant Sharma. Interestingly, skipper Kumble had been forced to leave out Harbhajan Singh from the XI, not the least for his unsavoury role in the Monkeygate scandal in the previous Test. Even more interestingly, the Aussies had gone in with four pacers but skipper

Ricky Ponting had to fall back on part-time spinners Andrew Symonds and Michael Clarke in desperation. This is a different scenario, though. Clarke can hardly be blamed if he takes the all-pace gamble, but it is unlikely that Dhoni will even contemplate doing so. After checking into their rooms and sleeping off the cross-continent jet-lag, Indian players hit the gymnasium in the evening at the hotel itself. Coach Duncan Fletcher had a one-on-one with senior pro Rahul Dravid, whose rich vein of form seems to be deserting him in the New Year. Fletcher clearly feels that Dravid's problem stems from his mind rather than lack of technique. Another candidate for coach's attention is Virat Kohli, whose Test career simply refuses to take off. The 'coffins', will however be opened only on Tuesday as they take a clean break from the game before the third Test gets underway on Friday.

SEX - A DIVINE PROCESS: AYURVEDA Dr. C.R.S. Kumar

According to Vatsayana kamasutra- Unfulfilled Love is fatal. If a man or a woman doesn’t get a chance of union after seeing and the liking the other person, it can cause them such symptoms like constant thinking about their subject, lose of sleep, emaciation, abstinence, shamelessness, madness, fainting and death – in that order. Ayurvedic medicine and Kamasutra both suggests guidelines to avoid such miserable conditions and to fulfil their desires to stay physically healthy and mentally strong. Latest medical research also highlights the same above point; these researchers also acknowledge ‘suppressed sexual feeling cause schizophrenia’. The reasons such as the fear of society and lack of knowledge of sexuality of the other sex are the principle reasons of suppressed sexuality. The notion and societal programming that sex is wrong also counteracts on their minds. Even within

contraception methods, or abortion – why destroy the greatest asset one can get? Sal-Santanangal (or children of good qualities, physically, mentally and spiritually) is the ultimate aim of sex.

married life, man and woman may be suppressing their sexual desires. This too is not healthy. These sexual feelings are like water in a reservoir – without a controlled opening, the dam can once collapse, causing huge lose to society. Sex, according to Ayurveda and the Kamasutra, is a divine process that is responsible for the very existence of human race on the face of earth. Kamasutra, the ancient science of love and love

making describes in detail a variety of factors involved in practicing safe and fulfilling sex. According to Ayurveda, children are an asset. From having intercourse to delivering children and bringing them up with healthy body, mind and imparting in them, the training to see life in positive life and showing them the good way of life is an elaborate process. One noticeable thing about Ayurveda is the relative silence about family planning,

Too much shopping ups stress level

Ayurveda Vajeekarana Chikitsa (Aphrodisiac Treatment) Aphrodisiac therapy or treatment has a prominent place in Ayurveda. It is part of Vrisha, one anga or branch in ashtangaAyurveda or eight principle branches of Ayurveda. Removing the imbalances of doshas through the Panchakarma therapy or tridosha (vata, pitta, kapha) comes before vageekarana chikitsa (aphrodisiac therapy). Good physical qualities, semen quantity and quality, is the main aim of vajeekarana chikitsa (Aphrodisiac Therapy). There is also a list of eligible qualifications for both men and women. The man should be compatible to his woman in physical, mental, and on

spiritual basis. The only place to ejaculate semen is vagina – masturbation and all other forms of unnatural sex are (Such as abnormal sexual perversions) prohibited. Although Kamasutra suggests 64 different sexual positions, Ayurveda recognizes only the common method –woman bottom and man top. Vageekarana chikitsa or Jaara chikitsa (aphrodisiac therapy) suggests Panchakarma for purification of physiology and semen. Ayurveda suggests physical union of loving couples as the one way to enjoy divine pleasure. In order to achieve the maximum benefits one should take regular Ayurvedic aphrodisiac herbs to live the life with ultimate vitality.

arrying heavy shopping bags increases mental stress, according to a new study. Researchers have found that shoppers physically weighed down with groceries, clothes or gifts subconsciously thought more about serious or weightier subjects, the Telegraph reported. The new study suggests shoppers hoping to stock up on cut-price deals may get less satisfaction than they bargained for. Academics from the Chinese University

January 2012 Edition

of Hong Kong and the National University of Singapore discovered that heavier shopping loads led to “more important and more stressful” thoughts. The study concluded that this was due to the brain being wired in such a way that physical weight influenced a person’s “psychological weight”. The finding will appear study in the forthcoming edition of the Journal of Consumer Research.

How obesity is linked to infertility A

bulging belly was once considered a sign of prosperity in our country; this is no longer the case as study after study reveals links between abdominal fat accumulation and potentially life threatening diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, osteoarthritis, infertility and certain types of cancers. The excess accumulation of fat in the body is referred to as obesity. Most people are conscious that obesity alters one’s physical appearance but are unaware that it also disrupts the delicate balance of hormones inside the body. One such health condition is infertility. Today, we will discover how obesity is directly linked to infertility in both men and women... Ovulatory dysfunction due to obesity

This disruption in the body’s hormonal balance makes obesity a serious risk factor for infertility in both men and women. According to Dr. Abhay Agrawal, Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeon Centre for Obesity Control, Agrawal Clinic and Asian Heart Institute, “Ovulatory dysfunction is a major factor leading to infertility in obese women. Irregularity in the levels of hormones such as androgen, estrogen and progesterone can actually alter a woman’s menstrual cycle. Optimal levels of these hormones are absolutely essential for pregnancy and conception. Fat deposits in the ovaries can also upset embryonic development and result in miscarriages.” Polycystic ovary syndrome and obbesity Dr. Manish Motwani, Laparoscopic Weight loss and General

Surgeon, Aastha Health Care, says that, “A major cause of female infertility and sub fertility is a condition known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), wherein a large number of small cysts appear in the ovaries as a result of hormonal imbalances.” Disruptions in a woman’s ovulation and menstrual cycle as a result of unhealthy weight gain can negatively impact the reproductive system, leading to difficulties in conceiving. Hence lifestyle modifications such as disciplined eating habits, increased level of daily physical activity and regular exercise are important for maintaining a healthy body weight. While these conventional means of weight loss may work well for obese and overweight individuals, the morbidly obese (individuals with a body mass index greater than 37.5kg/m2) find it nearly impossible to lose weight

through diet and exercise alone. Morbid obesity results in permanent changes in the metabolism, and hence, is now considered a medical disorder which requires clinical treatment through bariatric or weight loss surgery. Bariatric surgery has been accepted as the most effective solution for achieving sustained weight loss for morbidly obese patients. Low sperm production, erectile dysfunction and obesity The cases of obesity related infertility in women have been well documented. It may however come as a surprise that there is a strong link between increased body weight and low sperm production and erectile dysfunction. According to Dr. Motwani, “The ability to sustain an erection depends on a complex interplay of sensory nerves and blood vessels and frequent breakdown in

the sequence of events leading to erection is known as erectile dysfunction disorder”. Dr. Agrawal adds that, “Obesity is strongly linked to infertility in men. Fat cells produce estrogen and men with more fat cells have at any given time more estrogen circulating through their bodies as compared to their normal weight peers. The most common cause for male infertility is abnormal sperm production”. Obesity is the root cause of several medical complications. Hence, the treatment for obesity related infertility in men and women must include a focused approach towards treating obesity itself. While genetic factors leading to obesity may be largely out of one’s control, lifestyle modifications can play an important role in maintaining healthy body weight and improving one’s quality of life.

DIARRHOEA IN INFANTS

HOMEOPATHIC HELP:

>> The World Health Organization considers childhood diarrhoea to be the number one public health problem in the world today. Over three million children in the world die each year as a result of diarrhoea-related dehydration. Almost everyone has an episode of diarrhoea at some time. However, when it occurs in infants, it is a big worry and challenge for parents who become unsure as to the level of urgency that should be allocated to the situation. Diarrhoea is an increase in the wateriness, volume, or frequency of bowel movements. During diarrhoea, foods and fluid pass too quickly, or in too large an amount through the colon, and the body doesn’t absorb the fluid. Acutediarrhoeaisuncomfortable, but usually is not serious and will go away in a few days on its own. However, if the stool contains blood, if the diarrhoea is very severe, or if it lasts more than a few days, immediate medical attention should be sought (especially children and elderly people). Acute cases of diarrhoea can be due to a viral, bacterial infection or parasites, often from food and

water or incompatible food or drink. Chronic or persistent cases may have other underlying problems or allergies. Diarrhoea is your body’s way of getting rid of toxins, it’s best to let it run its course. Diarrhoea is one of the important defences of the body. It is the way that the body hastens elimination of certain infective organisms. Suppressing the elimination using conventional drugs, will stop a natural process abruptly and thus retain the bacteria, parasite or toxin inside the body. At the same time, severe diarrhoea could create dehydration in infants and children and can suddenly become serious.

SO WHAT IS THE RIGHT SOLUTION? Gentle medication that will safely and gradually control the diarrhoea without draining the infant while the cleaning is underway is the best approach. STEPS TO BE TAKEN: 1.) AVOID DEHYDRATION: Parents should watch out for signs of dehydration like dry mouth, tongue, sunken eyes, crying without tears, not urinating for a long time or dry diaper for several hours, skin fold recall (pinching the skin) etc. Oral rehydration fluids, lots of

2.) TREAT THE UNDERLYING INFECTION USING HOMEOPATHY: Now that the dehydration is under control, use gentle medication like Homeopathy to treat the underlying infection or cause. Research has shown that children with diarrhoea recover at least 20% faster when Homeopathic remedies are used. Remedies are very specific and address the child individually. For example: Nux Vomica is for diarrhoea from rich or spicy foods or from food poisoning. These children feel better for a short period after a stool, but will have diarrhoea again immediately after eating or immediately upon waking. They are chilly and irritable. Cinchona Officinalis (also called China or Peruvian bark) is for diarrhoea with great bloating, indigestion, and general weakness. The symptoms are noticeably

worse at night, in hot weather, and after nursing. Children respond wonderfully to simple homeopathic remedies. This gentle yet very effective medication is sweet and very easy to administer, saving them from lot of weeping, crying and inconvenience. It will speed up the recovery process, without interfering with the body’s natural and essential process of elimination. Homeopathic remedies not only control acute ailments but will reduce their severity and recurrence. Essentially, any medicine administered to children must be free from harmful effects. Homoeopathic pills do not hamper digestion; do not lower resistance power; do not produce allergy and do not harm even if taken for long-term. If you have tried everything else and are still feeling unwell, why not give Homeopathy a chance to help you? You may ask your personal query to Raj Kothuru (Homeopath) via email drraj@aurahealth.com.au or phone 0425 761 826 / (03) 9077 5044 regarding any of your health problems. cientists have now discovered how poor nutrition during pregnancy can put offspring at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other agerelated diseases in later life. This finding could lead to new ways of identifying people who are at a higher risk of developing these diseases and might open up targets for treatment. Researchers at the University of Cambridge and the Medical Research Council (MRC) Toxicology Unit at the University of Leicester, found that, in both rats and humans, individuals who experience a poor diet in the womb are less able to store fats correctly in later life. Storing fats in the right areas of the body is important because otherwise they can accumulate in places like the liver and muscle where they are more likely to lead to disease. “One of the ways that our bodies cope with a rich modern western diet is by storing excess calories in fat cells. When these cells aren’t able to absorb the excess then fats get deposited in other places, like the liver, where they are much more dangerous and can lead to type 2 diabetes,” said Professor Anne Willis of the MRC Toxicology Unit at the University of Leicester. The team found that a molecule called miR-483-3p controls this process. They found that miR-483-3p was produced at higher levels in individuals who had experienced a poor diet in their mother’s wombs than those who were better nourished. When pregnant rats were fed low protein diets their offspring had higher levels of miR-483-3p. This led to them developing smaller fat cells and left them less able to store fats in adulthood.

These rats were less likely to get fat when fed a high calorie diet but were at a higher risk of developing diabetes. And the team also found that miR-483-3p was present in elevated levels in a group of people who were born with a low birth weight. The researchers found that miR-4833p works by suppressing a protein called GDF3. When they studied a group of adult humans who were born with a low birth weight, they found that GDF3 protein was present at around only thirty percent of the levels found in people born at a normal weight.
