minutes. Chavan said that the VersovaGhatkopar line will become operational by December. He said the Metro would be extended to the adjacent Thane district and work on a separate monorail project expedited. The Mumbai Metro’s Versova-

Ghatkopar ﬁrst phase is being constructed at a cost of around Rs 2,356 crore by a Reliance Infrastructure-led consortium on behalf of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The Metro sector is an elevated corridor supported by

columns at the road median and will enable connectivity of eastern-western suburbs to the Western Railway and Central Railway. The MMRDA plans to provide an interchange facility within the two railway networks at Ghatkopar and Andheri.

Sarabjit Singh dies at Pakistan’s Jinnah hospital

ndian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh died of cardiac arrest in a Lahore hospital late on Thursday after being comatose for nearly a week following a brutal assault by other inmates of a highsecurity jail, ofﬁcials said. “I received a call from the doctor on duty (at Jinnah Hospital) at 1 am (1:30 IST) informing me that Sarabjit is no more,” Mahmood

Shaukat, the head of a medical board that was supervising Sarabjit’s treatment, said. Another doctor, who was part of the team treating Sarabjit said he died of cardiac arrest, adding that doctors made several unsuccessful attempts to resuscitate him. Ofﬁcials of the Indian high commission in Islamabad said they had been informed by

ofﬁcials of Jinnah Hospital about Sarabjit’s death. Shaukat said authorities were yet to decide on conducting an autopsy on Sarabjit’s body. Asked whether the autopsy would be done after getting permission from the government, he said: “At the moment I have no idea.” No decision had been made about handing over the body

to Sarabjit’s kin or to Indian authorities, he said. “These matters will be worked out according to the directions from the government,” he said. Earlier in the day, ofﬁcial sources in Lahore had said Sarabjit had slipped into a “nonreversible” coma and this could lead to “brain death”. His measurements on the Glasgow Coma Scale, which indicates the levels of consciousness and damage to a person’s central nervous system, had dropped to a “critical level”, the sources said. Sarabjit’s heart was beating “but without brain function” because of the extensive head injuries he sustained when he was assaulted on Friday. He was completely unresponsive and unable to breathe without ventilator support. Sarabjit, 49, sustained severe injuries, including a fractured skull, when at least six prisoners attacked him in a barrack at Kot Lakhpat Jail on Friday afternoon. He was hit on the head with bricks and had been comatose in hospital since then. Police have booked two death row prisoners — Amer Aftab and Mudassar — for the attack. They reportedly told investigators that they had attacked Sarabjit

because he had allegedly carried out bomb attacks in Lahore. No action has been taken so far against ofﬁcials of the jail for failing to provide adequate security to Sarabjit. Sarabjit’s wife Sukhpreet Kaur, daughters Poonam and Swapandeep Kaur and sister Dalbir Kaur, who went to Lahore on Tuesday to see him, have returned to India. Sarabjit was convicted of alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990 and spent about 22 years in Pakistani prisons. His mercy petitions were rejected by the courts and former President Pervez Musharraf. The previous Pakistan People’s Party-led government put off Sarabjit’s execution for an indeﬁnite period in 2008. Sarabjit’s family says he was the victim of mistaken identity and had inadvertently strayed across the border in an inebriated state. Following the rapid deterioration in Sarabjit’s condition, New Delhi had requested that he be immediately released so that he could be treated in India or a third country. Pakistan had said it was “positively considering” the request to repatriate Sarabjit.

The defence, however, was at divergence with the dominant sentiment in the party that the row had extinguished the hope for legislations on land acquisition and food security, rendering waste the careful consensus-building with the

BJP. That Sushma Swaraj targeted Sonia Gandhi meant the opposition would not cooperate with the government anymore. It prompted suggestions that the government adjourn Parliament early and promulgate ordinances to activate the bills on land and food. Congressmen argued that BJP’s strident call for Kumar’s head could have been the meeting point for normalcy in Parliament. According to a senior leader, Congress will take a ﬁnal decision on Kumar after the May 8 hearing in Supreme Court but a corrective then may serve little since the Parliament session would be over. At the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, ministers wondered if there was meaning in a senior minister pointing out drafting mistakes in the law ministry’s proposal on changes to marriage laws. A clause in the bill was seen to have been drafted sloppily. Many saw a parallel with the claims in the law minsiter’s defence that he only improved the language of the CBI probe report on Coalgate in his contentious meeting with the CBI director.

UK: Indian-origin nurse on trial for poisoning boss

n Indian-origin nurse is on trial in the UK over charges that she attempted to “poison” her boss by spiking her coffee with mercury amalgam used in dental ﬁ llings. Ravinder Kaur, 34, denies administering a poisonous or noxious substance with intent on March 16, 2012, three days after being given a warning about “poor behaviour” at work. A jury at her ongoing trial at Blackfriars Crown Court in London was told that her boss, Laura Knowles, went to hospital and lost consciousness after returning to work following the alleged incident. The 36-year-old said she also had bouts of dizziness, diarrhoea and vomiting. Prosecutor Samantha Cohen told the court that Kaur had begun work as an assistant dental nurse at Shams Moopen Dental Practice in Shefford, Bedfordshire, in November 2011. She started out as “meticulous and professional” but her behaviour soon changed with colleagues regarding her as inﬂ exible and “not a good team player”. In January last year, she had received a verbal warning for unfairly ordering her colleagues around at work. On March 13, the nurse was summoned to a meeting to dis-

cuss her “generally poor behaviour” by Laura Knowles. A few days later, she offered to make coffee for Knowles, but did not return for 15 minutes. The court was told that her boss noticed the drink did not taste right and when pouring

away the coffee spotted a grey sludge in the sink. She then started to feel sick and suffer stomach cramps. The prosecution said Xrays showed the presence of “speckles of metal” in Knowles’ lower intestine consistent with

“ingested mercury”. Kaur was arrested later that day and prosecutors said swabs of sludge found in the sink matched the mercury amalgam used by the surgery to make ﬁ llings. They told the jury that Kaur

was trained in the use of mercury and was taught how to handle it safely and deal with spillages. The defendant claims she had been set up by members of staff because of her reports to the authorities.

US asks India, Pakistan to restrain their nuclear, missile programmes

deeply concerned by the dangers posed by the continuing buildup of nuclear weapons and their delivery systems in South Asia,” Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation Thomas Countryman said in his address to the 2015 Review Conference of the States

The United States, he said continues to encourage both India and Pakistan to play a positive role in the global non-proliferation community and take steps to prevent proliferation, including bringing their strategic trade controls in line with the guidelines of the multilateral supplier regimes. “We support, in a phased manner, India’s goal of joining the four multilateral export control regimes,” he said, adding that the US remains cognizant of its nonproliferation commitments and objectives when considering how to conduct its bilateral relations with any country. “Our activities with both India and Pakistan continue to be consistent with our NPT (Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty) obligations and with our commitment as members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group,” Countryman said according to a copy of the speech provided here.

ifferences over what constitutes as a woman’s right to her marital property in case of a divorce forced the Union Cabinet to refer the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill to a Group of Ministers (GoM) on Wednesday. The law ministry had suggested that a woman be given a share in residential property of the husband, including inherited and inheritable premises, in case of divorce, while the ministry of women and child development has suggested that a woman’s right to inheritable property and property acquired by the husband before marriage be kept out of the purview of the law. The ministers discussed the amendments for over two hours during the meeting of the Cabinet. “When thinking men and women present different opinions, different opinions do not mean difference of opinion,” ﬁnance minister P Chidambaram said when asked whether

the Cabinet was split on the matter. “Views are expressed in a Cabinet and after expressing views, the Prime Minister takes the ﬁnal decision. In this case the matter has been referred to a Group of Ministers to look at one or two clauses of the Bill,” he said. The GoM would examine the clauses over the next few days and the Bill will come back before the Cabinet, he said. Sources said that ministers, including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Kamal Nath and Kapil Sibal, felt that there should be greater clarity on the issue. Even as the Cabinet was discussing the matter, a small group of protestors shouted slogans against the Bill outside the Prime Minister’s ofﬁcial residence. They were rounded up by the police and taken away from the high-security zone.

Two years later, authorities say Tamerlan and his brother, Dzhohkar, detonated two homemade bombs near the ﬁnish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three and injuring more than 260. Tamerlan was killed in a police shootout and Dzhohkar is under arrest. Also on Saturday, Federal Medical Center Devens spokesman John Collauti described the conditions under which 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was being held in the Ayer facility after being moved there from a hospital on Friday. Dzhokhar was injured during a police chase on Thursday in which his brother, Tamerlan, was fatally wounded. Collauti said in a telephone interview that Dzhokar is in secure housing where authorities can monitor him. His cell has a solid steel door with an observation window and a slot for passing food and medication.

ussian authorities secretly recorded a telephone conversation in 2011 in which one of the Boston bombing suspects vaguely discussed ‘jihad’ with his mother, offi cials said on Saturday, days after the US government finally received details about the call. In another conversation , the mother of now-dead bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was recorded talking to someone in southern Russia who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case, offi cials said. The conversations are significant because, had they been revealed earlier, they might have been enough evidence for the FBI to initiate a more thorough investigation of the Tsarnaev family. As it was, Russian authorities told the FBI only that they had concerns that Tamerlan and his mother were religious extremists. With no additional information, the FBI conducted a limited inquiry and closed the

In the past week, Russian authorities turned over to the United States information it had on 26-year-old Tamerlan and his mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva. The Tsarnaevs are ethnic Chechens who emigrated from southern Russia to the Boston area over the past 11 years. Even had the FBI received the information from the Russian wiretaps earlier, it’s not clear that the government could have prevented the attack. In early 2011, the Russian FSB internal security service intercepted a conversation between Tamerlan and his mother vaguely discussing jihad, according to US offi cials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation with reporters. The two discussed the possibility of Tamerlan going to Palestine, but he told his mother he didn’t speak the language there, according to the offi cials, who reviewed the information Russia shared with the US. In a second call, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva spoke with a man in the Caucasus region of Russia who was under FBI investigation. Jacqueline Maguire, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s Washington Field Offi ce, where that investigation was based, declined to comment. There was no information in the conversation that suggested a plot inside the United States, offi cials said. It was not immediately clear why Russian authorities didn’t

share more information at the time. It is not unusual for countries, including the US, to be cagey with foreign authorities about what intelligence is being collected. Nobody was available to discuss the matter early Sunday at FSB ofﬁ ces in Moscow. Jim Treacy, the FBI’s legal attache in Moscow between 2007 and 2009, said the Russians long asked for US assistance regarding Chechen activity in the United States that might be related to terrorism. “On any given day, you can get some very good cooperation,” Treacy said. “The next you might ﬁnd yourself totally shut out.” Zubeidat Tsarnaeva has denied that she or her sons were involved in terrorism. She has said she believed her sons have been framed by US authorities. But Ruslan Tsarni, an uncle of the Tsarnaev brothers

and Zubeidat’s former brotherin-law, said Saturday he believes the mother had a “bigtime influence” as her older son increasingly embraced his Muslim faith and decided to quit boxing and school. After receiving the narrow tip from Russia in March 2011, the FBI opened a preliminary investigation into Tamerlan and his mother. But the scope was extremely limited under the FBI’s internal procedures. After a few months, they found no evidence Tamerlan or his mother were involved in terrorism. The FBI asked Russia for more information. After hearing nothing, it closed the case in June 2011. In the fall of 2011, the FSB contacted the CIA with the same information. Again the FBI asked Russia for more details and never heard back. At that time, however, the CIA asked that Tamerlan’s and his mother’s name be entered into a massive U.S. terrorism database. The CIA declined to comment on Saturday. Authorities have said they’ve seen no connection between the brothers and a foreign terrorist group. Dzhohkar told FBI interrogators that he and his brother were angry over wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the deaths of Muslim civilians there. Family members have said Tamerlan was religiously apathetic until 2008 or 2009, when he met a conservative Muslim convert known only to the family as Misha. Misha, they said, steered Tamerlan toward a stricter version of Islam. Two US offi cials say investigators believe they have identifi ed Misha. While it was not clear whether the FBI had spoken to him, the offi cials said they have not found a connection between Misha and the Boston attack or terrorism in general.

ore than 28 years after Delhi antiSikhs riots, a city court on Tuesday acquitted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a related case, triggering widespread anger and outrage, especially in the Sikh community. More than 3,000 Sikhs were killed in the riots after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, who was killed by her Sikh bodyguards. Five of a family were killed in the Delhi Cantonment massacre in which Kumar - a prominent political face of the riots who is accused of inciting murderous mobs -was acquitted. Although Kumar, dressed in a white shirt and khaki trousers, left the court with a smile and cordoned by cops, he has two more ‘84 riots cases pending against him - violence

in Sultanpuri and Nangloi. The victims’ lawyer said Tuesday’s verdict would be challenged in the Delhi high court. As additional sessions judge JR Aryan acquitted him of murder, dacoity and criminal conspiracy, protests erupted inside and outside the courtroom. A young Sikh man, Karnail Singh, hurled a shoe at the judge The court convicted ﬁve other accused. Ex-councillor Balwan Khokkar, Girdhari Lal and Captain Bhagmal were held guilty of murder while Mahender Yadav and Kishan Khokkar were convicted for rioting. The sentence will be pronounced on May 6. “Hang me if you cannot hang him or shoot me dead right here,” said a wailing 75-year-

old Jagdish Kaur, the complainant. She had lost her husband, son and three cousins, and had told the court she saw Kumar leading a mob which killed them. Kaur, who held on tightly to her chair for a full hour after the judge left, had to be evicted by women cops. Sikh protesters tried to barge inside the court complex by climbing its gates shouting slogans against Kumar and the Congress party. “Justice has been denied even after a wait of 28 years. It is a black day for us,” said Harinder Singh, kin of a victim. “The court has taken a hyper-technical view. When the testimonies of the witnesses had been believed for convicting the ﬁve accused, then how can the same witness be disbelieved for the sixth accused, Kumar?” said HS Phoolka, the lawyer representing the victims, adding that he would challenge the verdict before the Delhi high court. Concluding its ﬁnal arguments, the CBI said it had limited itself to what each of the witnesses had seen at the time of the incident. “The witnesses had given honest versions of what they all had seen during the riots,” it had said. But the court found merit in Kumar’s lawyers’ argument that there were material contradictions in statements of the witnesses, including Kaur’s, and they had given different versions in the court. Kehar Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Raghuvender Singh, Narender Pal Singh and Kuldeep Singh -members of the same family -were killed by a mob in Delhi Cantonment’s Raj Nagar area during the riots. Indians account for 22% of Britain’s ultra-rich club

uper-rich Indians account for more than 20% of the wealth of ultra-high net worth (UHNW) individuals in Britain, a new list showed on Tuesday. As a national group, they are second only to expat Russians. The list, published by the Singapore-based Wealth-X group, places steel magnate and ArcelorMittal chairman Lakshmi Mittal at second place with a fortune of $15.8 billion. Mittal was pushed to the second spot this year by Russian Alisher Burkhanovich Usmanov, who is part owner of the English football club Arsenal and is worth $16.4 billion. “Mittal has seen his net worth estimate decline along with the stock price of ArcelorMittal, losing at least $30 billion in recent years,” the report said. The two other Indians on the top 15 list are the Hinduja brothers — Srichand at number 9 with a net worth of $7.6 billion and Gopichand at 12th with $6 billion. Taken together, the wealth of the three Indian-origin industrialists makes up 22% of the top 15 total of $133.3 billion. Apart from Usmanov, the two other Russians in the list include Roman Abramovich (at number 3, $12.1 billion)

and Leonard Blavatnik (Number 5, $9.5 billion). According to Wealth-X estimates, there are 10,760 individuals residents in Britain worth $30 million or more, with at least 310 new individu-

als joining the ranks of the ultra wealthy. On an average, Britain has added one UHNW individual every day since 2011. The combined wealth of the UHNW in Britain stands at an estimated $1.3 trillion.

Modi’s latest: One India, best India

n the 53rd Gujarat Foundation Day, chief minister Narendra Modi invoked the Gujarati pride again, but his sight appeared ﬁrmly set on Delhi. At a youth convention in Navsari, the chief minister said he had “a dream of making Gujarat the best state, with a view to building ‘One India, Best India’ ”. He accused the former chief ministers of not giving due importance to the day. The UPA government, too, came in for criticism for reneging on its promise of making a heritage path of Mahatma Gandhi’s route to Dandi. During a visit to Dandi, Modi said, “In 2005, our prime minister had come to Gujarat to announce a heritage path on the Sabarmati-Dandi route. It has been eight years, but nothing has happened on that front.” The Centre’s wish now is that the government roads along the route be considered heritage path, he added. As for the previous state governments, they had not given enough importance to the Gujarat foundation day for political reasons, Modi said. “There was an effort by some to erase this history. But we have made efforts to prevent them from doing so,” he added.

Don’t bare legs in India, Asian Development Bank warns delegates

annual meeting in Greater Noida, to more than 4,000 delegates. The annual meeting is being held in the India-Expo mart in Greater Noida and several of the delegates from nearly 67 countries are staying in hotels in Noida, Greater Noida and Delhi. The meeting will discuss issues related

to the global economy, Asian challenges and development. The advisory posted on the general information section on the ADB website says Indians are very conservative about dress and advises women to dress modestly, with legs covered. “Trousers are acceptable, but

shorts and short skirts are offensive to many. If you want to keep cool in the Indian sun, cotton clothing is essential along with a comfortable pair of open sandals,” says the advisory. Clicking on the ‘read more’ section takes one to a website TravelIndia.com, which elaborates on what is acceptable and what should be avoided while travelling in India. Among other subjects, it covers taking pictures, visiting religious places, eating, concept of time, tipping, siesta and common faux pas. It also has a special section for gay travellers. “While travelling in India you might see a lot of men holding hands. This should not be taken as a sign of their sexual orientation, in all probability they are not gay,” the advisory says. “Most gays in India are of the closet kind as Indian society does not accept homosexuality. Declaring yourself to be a homosexual is a sure way of being disowned by family and friends.” It goes on to say that in big cities and amongst the higher strata of the society, homosexuality is not considered abnormal behaviour any more but cautions about showing affection in public.

“You would be better off avoiding public displays of affection such as cuddling and kissing each other in public (not just for gays). Homosexual relations between men are illegal in India and the penalty according to the Indian Penal Code is seven years rigorous imprisonment. However, had this law been enforced strictly, the Indian prisons would have been overﬂowing by now,” the website says. In the section titled: “Common Faux Pas”, it says that kissing and embracing are regarded in India as part of sex and asks travellers to not engage in these activities. “It is not even a good idea for couples to hold hands,” it says. The advisory on eating says that when eating or drinking, your lips should not touch other people’s food - “jutha or sullied food is strictly taboo.” “Don’t, for example, take a bite out of a chapati and pass it on. When drinking out of a cup or bottle to be shared with others, don’t let it touch your lips, but rather pour it directly into your mouth. This custom also protects you from things like hepatitis. It is customary to wash your hands before and after eating,” the advisory says.

SC points to Ambani, questions cover for rich

he Supreme Court on Wednesday frowned upon official security cover being provided to the rich, saying if the government and police had been alive to providing adequate security to citizens, then 5/6-year-olds would not have been raped in the country. Even though the government’s decision to provide paid security cover through CISF personnel to one of the world’s richest businessmen, Mukesh Ambani, did not figure specifically during the discussions, the indirect reference to it from a bench of Justices G S Singhvi and Kurian Joseph was loud and clear. “We read from newspaper reports about the home ministry agreeing to provide CISF security to an individual. Why do such persons, who can afford to pay for security, not hire private security guards,” the bench asked and said cities would have been a lot safer had the governments taken adequate steps to provide security to common citizens. “The governments have provided security to a lot of private individuals who face criminal cases, including murder and rape charges. We are making it clear that the home ministry has to take a call on this soon. The state is not obliged to provide security to persons facing criminal

charges except for documentary proof of specific threat to his life,” the bench said and asked additional solicitors general Indira Jaising and Siddharth Luthra to address the court on this issue on July 9. The court asked all states to provide to the Union home ministry lists of two sets of persons - the affluent ones who pay to get security from the government and the second, persons facing criminal charges yet protected by state police. It asked the Union government to collate the data and place it before the bench for consideration on July 9. What bothered the court more was spiraling crime, including sexual assaults on minors, at a time when the government was engaging a huge number of security personnel to protect the rich, criminals and other politicians, who flaunt it as a status symbol or use it to coerce other commuters to give way on public roads. “Please provide security to all so that five- or six-year-olds do not get sexually assaulted. We are concerned by the situation where so much of security is given to many who do not deserve it while there is no security for the common man,” the bench said. Amicus curiae Harish Salve was critical of rifle-wielding po-

licemen coming to the city accompanying so-called VVIPs. He said state police forces were being misused in the name of security cover and cited instances where such cover was extended at the cost of the exchequer to even relatives of political bigwigs staying in the national capital. The bench said if the rich could pay for government security and others too could get it being

relatives of “those who matter in politics”, then the government should raise a separate force speciﬁcally for this purpose without diverting regular policemen and compromising the security of commoners. The court also asked the government to enforce the rule which allowed constitutional dignitaries to use red beacons with siren only when they were on of-

ficial duty. “Enforce this rule and see the drastic reduction in the number of cars with red beacon lights and siren on road,” the bench said. When Salve said Punjab and Haryana had not filed affidavits pursuant to a direction from the court on a related issue, the court ordered their home secretaries to be present on the next date of hearing to explain the delay.

n earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale shook Jammu & Kashmir and many other parts of north India, including the national capital, on Wednesday afternoon. One person was killed and over 70, many of them schoolchildren, were injured in the Doda and Kishtwar districts in J&K. “One person identiﬁed as Gushan, 60, was killed in a remote belt of Kishtwar district while he was grazing cattle when the earthquake struck,” a police spokesman said. “At least ﬁve schoolchildren and three teachers were injured during the earthquake in Kishtwar district, while over 20 children suffered minor injuries

when a primary school building collapsed in Bhaderwah town of Doda district.” He said panic gripped the region when the tremors were felt at 12: 27 am and lasted for about 10 seconds. Mubarak Singh, the deputy commissioner of Doda, said over the phone that there was no causality in Doda, but 66 people, including some schoolchildren, sustained injuries. Scores of buildings were damaged in Bhaderwah and Kishtwar. A landslide triggered by the tremors led to a blockade on the Kishtwar-Batote highway. The earthquake’s epicentre was on the J&K-Himachal Pradesh border.

Asha Patel, who grew up in Rushegetsy Mead, Leicester, has been shortlisted along with 24 other people for the job that involves “eating your way round the state, foraging out the ﬁnest produce and uncovering the best bars and restaurants”. The Australian state’s tourism website has described it as “one of the best jobs in the world”. Patel said, landing the job would be “a dream come true”. For a self-confessed food addict and travel lover, being paid to research the ﬁnest produce and best eateries on the other side of the world must be the absolute dream job. So Asha is more than a little excited after being shortlisted for the role. More than 600,000 applicants from across the world applied for six positions and just 25 people have now been shortlisted for each role. The winners of each will spend six months carrying out the job of their dreams, getting

paid $50,000 plus $50,000 living expenses, for the pleasure. “I’m really up for adventure and excitement,” Asha said. ”It would mean everything to me. I was thrilled, ecstatic and a bit overwhelmed when I found out I’d been shortlisted. It’s quite different to anything I’ve ever done before,” she said. Asha works as a freelance writer and photographer in London, but says food is her true love. While the other ﬁve positions, lifestyle photographer, Outback

adventurer, park ranger, wildlife caretaker and “chief funster”, are all equally amazing jobs, the 30-year-old says she was instantly drawn to the role of taste master. She said she knew it was for her as soon as she read the job description. “I’m really passionate about food and have such a love for it,” she said. According to research ﬁrm IDC, the overall mobile phone market in India reached about 218 million units in 2012, growing 16 per cent year-on-year. Of this, 16.3 million units were smartphones, but the category saw a growth of about 48 per cent. Samsung was the leader in the quad-core and 5-inch plus screen size models, IDC added. The demand for smartphones is expected to be around 34-36 million units this year. Globally, Samsung had 30.3 per cent share of the smartphone market (with sales of 215.8 million units) in 2012, while Apple had a 19.1 per cent share with sales of 135.9 million units, according to IDC.

While rejecting Bhullar’s plea for commutation of death penalty to life term, the bench of Justices Singhvi and Mukhopadhaya had taken a stern view of mercy pleas ﬁled by terrorists awarded death penalty. The bench found it rather strange for the terrorists to seek mercy when they had shown no trace of it while killing innocent citizens using assault riﬂes and bombs for some ideology or misplaced notion about waging a war against the government.

Uttar Pradesh stands ﬁrst with 20.5% of the total scheduled caste (SC) population, followed by West Bengal with 10.7%, says the data released by the Union census directorate on Tuesday. Bihar with 8.2% and Tamil Nadu with 7.2 % come third and fourth. Dalits form around 16.6% of India’s population. The 2011 census recorded nearly 20.14 crore people belonging to various scheduled castes in the country. As per the 2001 census, the number was 16.66 crore. The dalit population showed a decadal growth of 20.8%, whereas India’s population grew 17.7% during the same period. “Though there is an increase in the population of dalits in the country, many states with a considerable number of dalits don’t have any legislation to protect the interests of the community. Dalit empowerment is very poor in many states,” said former Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) MLA D Ravikumar. Many scheduled caste families don’t own land or any other property, said Ravikumar. “Many dalits are landless and efforts to empower them by giving free land have not been successful in Tamil Nadu. Unlike Punjab, which has a considerable number of dalits as

What had convinced all three courts to classify the case under the “rarest of rare” category was that the murder was committed when Das was out on bail in another murder case, in which too he was convicted. The trial court sentenced him to death on August 18, 1997; the HC conﬁrmed it on February 3, 1998 and the Supreme Court upheld it on May 14, 1999. Immediately after the President rejected his mercy plea in 2011, he approached the Supreme Court challenging the decision on the ground that he had already undergone imprisonment for

When apps attack, no secret is safe

ou may ﬁercely guard your e-privacy by installing anti-virus software and desisting from downloading anything on your smart phone, but someone somewhere may still have access to some of your data. If a friend or acquaintance has compromised his own privacy while downloading an app, he could have inadvertently put you at risk just because you were in

his contacts list. Welcome to the new world of app permissions and malicious software, where increasingly the user is not in command of his own data. There are two ways in which we expose ourselves: One, by accidentally touching a strategically placed ad on an app; two, by inadvertently authorizing an app to access your data without understanding the permissions it seeks.

As per a 2012 report by a digital security ﬁrm, Bit9, more than two-thirds of all Android apps seek at least one high-risk ‘permission’ and one-fourth access your private information like email and contacts. “Applications ask for a number of permissions which they may not really need. Most of us don’t bother to understand what giving access to an app means to our privacy and we just go ahead and

click install,” says cyber forensics expert K Rama Subramaniam. Virtually every app asks for permission to access your mobile phone data of varying degrees— from location to address book to even text messages. The Facebook app asks for permission to access almost everything, including your microphone. The Google Plus app takes permission to read your call log, take pictures and videos, and record audio. This does not mean these app developers mine your data, though they can. Fortunately, the big players have behaved responsibly. In 2011, Google took about 50 apps off its Android market after complaints of data theft. It again removed more than 20 apps this year for similar activities. Not owning a smart phone doesn’t guarantee immunity either. Cyber criminals can still easily reach your data since, in a world where your privacy is intricately woven into your social groups like friends and colleagues, any breach in their accounts can lead to loss of your private information. Smart phones are prime targets because of the sheer amount of information stored in them. According to cyber security ﬁrm Symantec, 69% of Indians access the internet, including work e-mails, through mobile phones. Users also store passwords and card details on their phones so

once access is granted to an invasive app, nothing is hidden from the attacker’s eyes. Advertisements running inside a huge number of free apps today aren’t safe either. Though in most cases they are just promotions, they can also be used to disguise viruses, trojans and links to damaging websites. And they are often carefully placed on the screen so that you are likely to click them while playing a game or chatting. “Known as ‘madware’, short for mobile adware, their numbers have grown by 55% every month since July 2011,” says Symantec MD Shantanu Ghosh. Not only do these ads have the potential to steal your information, they also drain the mobile battery faster and eat up your 2G/3G data plan because the ads need to keep changing every few seconds. “Madwares collect browsing information like history and bookmarks, and send the information to a remote server on the internet controlled by a stranger,” says Mahendra Negi, COO of Trend Micro, a software security company. And it is not just the cleverness of the attacker that is making it possible; it’s your careless that aids the theft. “This year is expected to be a watershed year for madware, as advanced mobile technology will create new opportunities for cyber criminals,” says Ghosh.

Method:

We often wonder what else to do with vegetables aside from tossing them into a salad or braising them. The dilemma deepens when the vegetable is none other than the humble carrot, because unlike with tomatoes, broccoli and spinach we are often short of ideas to use them in a manner they turn out delicious while retaining the nutritional value. Despite being a mainstay vegetable not much experimentation goes on with carrots as they are either shredded or sliced and mixed with other vegetables, leading to it being dubbed a boring veggie that’s only high on health.

In a grinder, grind the shredded carrot, chopped garlic and green chillies till it becomes a thick paste. You can let the consistency be a tad grainy, but not too much. Heat mustard oil in a pan and then add the black cumin seeds to it. As the seeds begin to crackle, add the carrot mix to it. Add to it turmeric powder, and follow it up with salt as per taste and a pinch of sugar. Drinking while pregnant can cause miscarriage or stillbirth and lead to the development of physical and neurological birth defects in babies. Certain drugs taken during pregnancy can cause the child to be born with a physical dependence on them and/or develop withdrawal symptoms. The most common health complication associated with alcohol abuse is liver damage. Chronic over consumption of alcohol can lead to the development of hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver. Stress is a major factor in the consumption of drugs and alcohol. People use them to reduce anxiety, regulate emotions, and relieve emotional pain. Almost 50 percent of people who use drugs and alcohol have a mental health disorder. Oftentimes, substance abuse is an attempt to self-medicate.

Dharamkot – It is the location of a popular temple, and offers wonderful panoramic views of the Dhoula Dhar and Kangra Valleys. Dharamkot is also the starting point of one of the best trekking routes in Himachal Pradesh that goes up to Triund. Triund – Triund can be reached from Dharamkot after an enjoyable trek on narrow meandering stone laid paths. The trek takes around 3-4 hours and the view from Triund is fascinating. The altitude of Triund is 2975 meters. Dharamshala proudly hosts the world’s highest cricket ground, nestled among amazingly beautiful surroundings. The other tourist spots in Dharamshala include Machhrial and Bara Pathar, many temples, and monasteries.

Neil Nitin Mukesh is a very simple man. I have a 9 to 5 job, After that i go back to my family which is my mother and my father. Well directed, Large scale etc. I love to do that kind of films. If you ask me to put my finger into a ‘Plug-Hole’ and move around for 20 minutes to generate few laughs, I might not be comfortable doing it. When will you do a Romantic Film? Why always Dark and Edgy films? No one asks Mr. Shah Rukh Khan when will he do a ‘Dark’ or an ‘Edgy’ film? Romantic Films are not my Territory, There are so many films that i have refused and they were disasters. For example ‘Luck’ was offered to me, ‘Blue’ was offered to me. You can see me in ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’ which had hardly 20 minutes of me, But still made an Impact. No matter if these films are successful or no, But i have always been appreciated. And that’s the reason why i am sustaining. Any film for which you have worked real hard and it didn’t work? (Immediately) Jail. I was really upset when Jail didn’t work. I had put in my heart, My soul into Jail. The film taught me a lot in life, Not to ‘Expect’. I used to expect a lot from Jail. Madhur Bhandarkar, Intelligent Film, Serious Cinema, And suddenly it didn’t do well. I figured out people are not wanting to watch that kind of a Film. And what do you have to say about ‘Shortcut Romeo’? Shortcut Romeo is a very ‘Kameena’ film. (Laughs). It is very different from the Original (Tamil Version). When the film came to me, I really liked my character. I always wanted to have that ‘X’ Factor of ‘Haraamipan’ (Apologizes) Pardon my language. And the film has that ‘X’ Factor. There’s a lot of Cat and Mouse game in the film. We have added a lot of twist and turns. There’s a lot of deliciously interesting badness in this guy’s character. Recent events have galvanised anti-porn campaigners after it was revealed, via unnamed police officers quoted in local newspapers, that the suspects in the rape of the five-year-old had watched explicit material before the crime. Aroused by video clips on their mobile phones, they allegedly abducted the girl in a working class area in eastern New Delhi and drunkenly raped her so violently she was left with life-threatening injuries. arathi director Sujay Dahake had roped in Bollywood actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Urmila Matondkar for his project Ajoba, based on a real life leopard. But now it’s learnt, that actor Yashpal Sharma of Lagaan fame has replaced Nawazuddin. When contacted, Sujay said, “I had approached Nawazuddin to play the antagonist in my film. He had liked the script and the role and had also given me dates for the film. But since the Malshej leg of our shoot got extended, we could not keep the actor’s dates. Nawazuddin was busy shooting for a film in Kolkata and Manali for three months.

It was not feasible to wait that long, considering it would have required me to alter Urmila’s schedule. As Urmila plays the protagonist in my film, I had to replace Nawazuddin.” If Nawazuddin would have done the film, this would have been the actor’s debut Marathi film. The film’s makers then roped in Yashpal and rewrote Nawaz’s character to make it suitable for him. “I approached Yashpal as he is a fine actor and is known for his negative characters in Bollywood movies. Nawazuddin’s part was that of a young, newly married person, but Yashpal is playing a family man with a young daughter.”

outhern actor Taapsee Pannu, who tasted success with her Bollywood debut, David Dhawan’s Chashme Baddoor, will sign her second Hindi film only if something big comes her way. “I haven’t come across anything big. My next film can only be better than this. I won’t take a step down. I’m waiting for bigger projects,” says the 25-year-old. In the time where remakes are not doing well, this film broke the trend by performing well at the box office. “While we were shooting, it never crossed our minds that we are doing a remake. Anyway it’s not exactly the same. I think it worked as it was adapted to the present time. Script should connect with the audience of today,” she reasons. The North Delhiite was the only girl on the sets but she was treated just like

another guy. “These guys (Ali Zafar, Siddharth, Divyendu Sharma) never made me feel like a girl. I was the fourth guy. So it wasn’t as great as people think as I was one of them (laughs),” shares the actor. Talking about her co-stars, she tells us that she bonded the most with Divyendu. “We both are from Delhi, so there was an instant connect,” says the actor. However, she adds about her other costars: “Ali is shy, quiet and introvert. He’s totally opposite of me. I was mesmerised with his Punjabi singing. I have known Siddharth for two years now since we both are from Telugu and Tamil industry. But it was the first time I worked with him. He’s the most experienced out of all of us. All of them were great. It was 50-55 days of fun.”

Shootout At Wadala

lthough director Sanjay Gupta’s movie “Shootout At Wadala” is real life crime story, but he has packed in as many as 11 tracks, which include six songs and five remixes. Since the gangster drama is based in the late 1970s and early 1980s, some compositions have classic touch. For instance, the trumpet is used extensively; reminisce the music of that era. “Babli badmaash”, sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, kick-starts the album. The composition, picturised on Priyanka Chopra, takes you to the 1970s and the 1980s. Many would term it as an item number, but it is far from that, mainly because it avoids ‘raunchy elements’ that have become integral part of such tracks now. An expert in crooning such songs, Sunidhi beautiful adapts changing tempo of the composition while singing the song, which has sensuous lyrics thrown in here and there. The remix of the song is by Gourav Das Gupta and Roshan Balu and they have turned it into a discotheque number. The next is “Laila”. Even though it was in the news for featuring Sunny Leone, the song is definitely more than that. No one could have sung the song the way Mika Singh has. However, it would have Nighm a female been niceSonu to have

singer singing it. The cheesy song has a mass appeal, but it may not have a shelf life. Once again, Gourav and Roshan team up for the remix version of the song. They introduce a lot of music and beats, which enhances Mika’s voice and make it better than the original. Next in the line is “Ye Junoon”. Sung by Mustafa Zahid, the song’s lyrics bring in romantic ﬂavour. The singer brings out all love-related emotions. In the slow number, orchestra gradually joins the singer. It could be described as a passionate song, with some parts expressing sadness too. A good hear for emotional people. Mayur Sahni does the remix of the song and he brings in interesting change by adding echo effect. The remixed version sounds happier and more dramatic. John Abraham plays gangster Manya Surve in the film and next song “Aye Manya” seems to introduce him in the movie. The drum-beats make it dramatic and grand, but they dominate lyrics, as a result emotions get buried under heavy sound. Sung by a team of singers - Adnan Sami, Meet Brothers and Shaan, it has nothing more to write home about. “Goli” comes next. Mainly sung by Meet Brothers and Sudesh Bhosle, it is interspersed with a kind of rap by Anil Kapoor and John, which reﬂect the same style

that one heard in the song “Ganpat” from “Shootout at Wadala”. Focused on a bullet, it sounds hollow. It has a remix by Mayur and he enhances the song to some extent. “Aala re aala”, a mujra style song sung by Sunidhi, comes next and it once again takes

However, details were still being worked out for this by the university. The scholarship will be given to Indians opting to study anything in relevance to India including media, philosophy, films. The four years of scholarship will be worth USD 25,000.

ustralia’s La Trobe University is all set to honour Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan next month with La Trobe University Global Citizenship Award. The first of its kind award will be conferred to the 70-year-old actor while he is here to attend the Indian film Festival of Melbourne. The university is also introducing a Phd scholarship called Shri Amitabh Bachchan Scholarship. “Bachchan will be given La Trobe Univerisy Global Citizenshp Award which is a new award incepted by the university,” University senior deputy vice Chancellor Prof John Rosenberg said. The award is to honour the exceptional leadership he has shown in his film career and also for making an international impact. Roseberg said the new award will be now given annually from this year with Bach-

Explaining the initial the Australian aversion to supplying uranium to India, Brewster said the anti-nuclear antagonism is very strong in Australia, which has the world’s largest reserves of uranium. He said Australia refused to supply uranium to India since it was not a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, but this policy has subsequently been changed by the Labour Party thus removing an obstacle to the growing relationship between the two countries. Brewster said there were areas still to be worked on. “India doesn’t yet know how to engage with a noisy activist middle power such as Australia,” he said while adding that India had succeeded in engaging with bigger powers such as the US and smaller countries such as Singapore and Mauritius. He expressed confidence that these issues will be overcome in time.

‘Raja Harishchandra’ to be screened at IFFM in Melbourne

Phalke’s directed first Indian film’s screening will be organised to celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema.

IFFM, which has gained immense popularity down under among Indian diaspora as well locals, will include a special retrospective on Amitabh Bachchan, short film competition by applicants from Australia, New Zealand and India and a Bollywood dance competition. A special tribute to filmmaker Yash Chopra is also a part of this year’s festival with a lifetime achievement award presented to the deceased filmmaker which will be accepted by his wife, Pamela Chopra. The most talked about and much awaited event is the closing night which would be attended by Bachchan who will also be honoured with IFFM’s International Screen Icon award by the Victorian government. afael Nadal extended his record number of Barcelona titles to eight as he brushed off a slow start to beat Spanish compatriot Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday. Last weekend’s Monte Carlo runner-up regained his accustomed position on an ATP winner’s podium with his fourth title of 2013 and his third on clay for the year. He rallied from two breaks down on a day of drizzle and heavy conditions, beating Almagro for the tenth time without defeat. “It was a fantastic match for me,” Nadal told a crowd which had huddled under umbrellas for the duration of the contest. “Thanks to the people who watched us.” The world number five has made a storming comeback to tennis after missing seven months from last summer with knee injuries. Since his February return, he has played finals in all six events he has entered. Nadal went into recovery mode after trailing Almagro 0-3 in less than a quarter hour on the heavy court. Other than playing the course, Ranveer undergoes eight therapy sessions a week which help him focus on the game. The sessions include occupational, audiology and sensory therapies, which help him with his swing, physical fitness and communication among other things. A class VII student of the Scottish High Interna-tional, golf is a major part of Ranveer’s life but he hasn’t let go off other dreams. He won gold at the Delhi Horse Show two years back and has also passed the second level in piano from Trinity College. With such diverse interests, sky is the limit for this youngster.

Bad fans create hatred among players: Virat Kohli

the same venue. On Saturday night, it was the turn of Virat Kohli to face the ire of the Wankhede public. After leading Royal Challengers Bangalore to a 58-run loss

against Mumbai Indians, Kohli was hurt at the manner in which the crowd jeered him after the RCB skipper effected a controversial run out of MI’s Ambati Rayudu. They booed and jeered him when he came out to bat, and at the presentation ceremony, calling him a “cheat.” The RCB skipper expressed his disbelief at the crowd’s “hatred towards opposition “ and went on to say that such behaviour “is creating hatred amongst the players,” and that they “forgot that he also plays for India.” Ironically, batting great Sunil Gavaskar had praised the Mumbai crowd for its “big heart” as it cheered even the opposition players. Kohli though begged to differ. “I don’t know what is wrong with people at this venue . It feels a bit weird because at the end of the day you play for India and you don’t come here to be hated. It has happened to a few players in the past as well. I don’t know why they get so worked up. This tournament is not the end of the world. They forget that the players they are booing also play for their country,” Kohli fumed. “It is only creating hatred among the players. When I come back and play for India, they are going to cheer for me. It doesn’t work that

way.” The star bat felt the crowd behaviour was much better in RCB’s home ground, the Chinnaswamy Stadium, in Bangalore. “Whoever wins or loses, in any of the games in Bangalore, every captain is cheered, every Indian player is cheered. People appreciate good cricket,” he reckoned. And what exactly earned Kohli the Wankhede crowd’s wrath? He had scored a direct hit from the covers even as Rayudu was left short of his ground after getting into a tangle with bowler Vinay Kumar, which resulted in his bat being in the air after the impact with the bowler. Kohli though vehemently defended his decision to go ahead with the appeal. “It is very important to have knowledge of cricket. If it was any intentional interruption from the bowler, the umpire would have stopped the batsman from walking back. It is his job, not mine. The bowler and the batsmen didn’t see each other, and collided . It was perfectly fine to be honest,” Kohli explained. Kohli felt Rayudu should have been more careful. “You should have that much cricket awareness to see where the bowler is coming back. He (Vinay) had to back up when there was no one behind him,” Kohli said.

MALARIA STILL A MAJOR THREAT IN INDIA

he number of deaths from malaria might be steadily declining, but health experts believe the mosquito sting continues to pose a grave threat to millions in the country. An estimated one million fresh cases of the disease - which causes body ache and fever - are reported in India each year. About 95 percent of the country’s population resides in malaria endemic areas. According to the World Malaria Report 2011, over 70 percent of the country’s 1.2 billion population faces the risk of malaria infection, with an estimated 310 million people - one-third of the total - facing the “highest risk”. “The situation is very bad and it is an epidemic sort of issue. Malaria is quite rampant across the country, particularly in rural areas,” S. Chatterjee, senior consultant, internal medicine, at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, said. Sandeep Budhiaraja, director (internal medicine) at Max Hospital, added: “The problem very much exists, and not just in the rural areas but also in major cities like Delhi. The situation is certainly very bad.” He said though the country has been effective in treating the disease with new medicine, the threat of plasmodium which causes the disease becoming resistant to new drugs remains. “Even though the plasmodium became resistant to old conventional treatment, new drugs have been effective for now. But, we have seen in countries like Cambodia and Thailand, it has developed resistance. Though the type is different, threat remains that it may also develop some resistance,” Budhiaraja said. Echoing similar views, Chatterjee

said most physicians no longer administer Chloroquine to patients as the plasmodium - P. falciparum - that causes the severe type of malaria has more or less developed resistance to the drug. He said the drug has only been effective in controlling the milder from of malaria. The main vector of the disease in India is the female Anopheles Culicifacies, which is a small to medium sized mosquito. They usually breed in rainwater pools and puddles, burrow-pits, irrigation channels, seepages and sluggish streams. Extensive breeding is generally encountered following the monsoon. Some experts, however, also say that investments in malaria control have yielded good returns in the past years. Manish Mohil, consultant (internal medicine) at Saket City Hospital, said even though the situation is not good, most hospitals and doctors are usually well equipped to handle malaria cases and only severe cases are reffered to speciality hospitals. “People are as much responsible as the government for not being able to curb the disease. The issue is that citizens don’t take proper precautions even when they are more or less aware,” Mohil said. “In last five years, there has been a constant reduction in the number of malaria cases in the country. The number of cases has gradually come down from 2 million in 2001 to about 1.2 million in 2011,” said a senior scientist at the National Institute of Malaria Research. Recent government data also shows a decline both in the number of malaria cases and related deaths. According to National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), over 1.5 million cases of malaria

were reported in the country in 2009 and 2010. The figure fell to 1.3 million in 2011 and to 1 million in 2012. Till March 25 this year, 72,327 cases have been reported. Likewise, the number of malaria related deaths in the country in 2009 were 1,144 and came down to 1,018 in 2010. In 2011, the number further came down to 754, and to 506 in 2012. This year, till March 25, the number of deaths are only 18. However, in a clear contradiction to the government data, a 2011 study by

Lancet stated that malaria actually killed an estimated 46,800 Indians in 2010. The country had over 10 crore suspected malaria cases but only 15.9 lakh could be confirmed in 2010, according to World Malaria Report 2011. Experts, however, say more needs to be done to completely check the disease. Towards this, the World Malaria Day celebrated on April 25, instituted by WHO during the 2007 World Health Assembly of 2007, aims to highlight the

The research by Dr Anna Machin and professor Robin Dunbar from the University of Oxford studied a total of 341 people. The participants took part in an online psychological research forum where they answered questions regarding the maintenance, role and value of their best friend and romantic partnerships. Women saw the maintenance of their romantic partnerships as a team sport, involving equal input from both partners with shared goals and beliefs being the key to success. They also scored their partner consistently higher than themselves, seemingly placing their partner on a pedestal. “Our research shows that successful relationships are much more essential to women’s well-being than men’s. Men seem to keep their relationships at arm’s length with one eye on the dating market,” Machin said.

Childhood obesity is gateway to many other chronic diseases

ong known to dramatically increase the risk of certain chronic health conditions later in life, childhood obesity also has serious, immediate health consequences, according to a study. The researchers found that overweight children are 30 percent more likely than children of normal weight to suffer from three or more medical, mental or developmental problems; obese children are 200 percent more likely. “The findings should serve as a wake-up call to physicians, parents and teachers, who should be better informed of the risk for other health conditions associated with childhood obesity,” lead author Neal Halfon said. Researchers have been aware for some time that even as childhood obesity rates have risen over the last 20 years, so have other childhood chronic conditions such as asthma, learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although prior studies have looked for a connection between these phenomena, they have either had a small sample size or focused on a single condition or part of the country. In the current study, researchers constructed comprehensive health profiles of nearly 43,300 children between

the ages of 10 and 17 across the United States. All children were participants in the 2007 National Survey of Children’s Health. 15 percent had body mass indexes (BMIs) between the 85th and 95th percentiles (classified as overweight), while 16 percent had BMIs above the 95th percentile (classified as obese). The researchers compared weight with 21 separate indicators of general health, specific health disorders and psychosocial functioning. The results were adjusted to account for differences in sociodemographic factors. The researchers found that obese children were significantly more likely than normal weight children to suffer from poorer health, more disability, ADHD, allergies, asthma; bone, joint and muscle problems, conduct disorders, depression, developmental delays, ear infections, emotional and behavioral problems, headaches, learning disabilities, and missed school days, grade repetition and other school problems. “This study paints a comprehensive picture of childhood obesity,” Halfon said, “and we were surprised to see just how many conditions were associated with childhood obesity.” Further studies will be needed to confirm the current research,

In particular, longitudinal studies will help confirm whether obesity causes the associated health conditions, or whether there is some other factor that explains the connection. “Obesity might be causing the co-morbidity, or perhaps the comorbidity is causing obesity - or both might be caused by some

other unmeasured third factor,” Halfon said. “For example, exposure to toxic stress might change the neuroregulatory processes that affect impulse control seen in ADHD, as well as leptin sensitivity, which can contribute to weight gain.” The researchers said that in all likelihood, the rising prevalence of chronic childhood health

problems stems from decadeslong trends that have dramatically changed the social and physical environments of childhood. They suggested that childhood obesity prevention; therefore, should focus on improving the childhood environment, while also screening at-risk children for both obesity and the associated conditions.

Repeated studies have pointed at how stress adversely affects bone mineral density, which is the amount of mineral matter per square centimetre of bones. Dr Pradeep Bhonsle, Head of Orthopaedics at KEM Hospital, says stress plays a critical role

When your bone tissue is constantly remodelled within the body, the show is run by two cell types: osteoblasts that help in depositing new bone tissue and osteoclasts that break down old bone tissue. Dr Bhonsle says, “Your bone density is determined by the rate at which these cells work. Under stress, our adrenal

glands increase the production of cortisol. Cortisol, known as the ‘stress hormone’ as it’s released by the body in response to stress, can decrease bone density by inhibiting the bone-building osteoblasts.” With decreased osteoblast activity, the body ends up with more broken down bone tissue than deposited, causing low bone density and eventually osteoporosis. Interestingly, America which figures among the countries with the highest calcium intake, also has one of the highest rates of osteoporosis. The solution, health experts say, doesn’t lie in getting more calcium, but excreting less of it. When you face stress, you lose calcium through urine. Dr Bhonsle adds, “More cortisol leads to a dip in calcium absorption and a spike in its excretion.” Needless to say, the phosphoric acid in your cola acts as a corrosive agent and is a key cause of calcium and mineral loss from bones and teeth. Dr Bhonsle points out that stress effects a similar reaction and result. “Stress causes acidity which impedes optimal digestion of food. This acidity also hampers mineral metabolism which is vital for bone health. In fact, without proper absorption

of these minerals, even a very nutritious diet is of no use to your bones,” he says. Studies have also found that people suffering from depression have a lower bone density, making their bones more brittle than others. When in depression, the brain uses the sympathetic nervous system (which responds to impending danger or stress) to boost the secretion of noradrenalin within the bone, a chemical which obstructs osteoblasts. Depression, researchers say, mimics the effect of stress. Constant stress and the general feeling of being low makes people seek comfort in junk foods which aren’t rich in calcium, magnesium and other essential nutrients that help prevent osteoporosis. “Such wrong food choices translate into inadequate bone nutrition. Besides, the erratic timing of meals and multitasking like texting or working while eating seriously hinders optimum digestion. Of course, a regular intake of vitamin D3, obtained from the morning sun, is important as it helps in the utilisation of minerals in the bones. The solution to this problem is largely a lifestyle overhaul.”

is of fundamental importance to health. The paucity of clean water for domestic use has led to the increase in the number of deaths in both the urban and rural parts of developing economies. And India is no different. Women and children spend millions of hours each year fetching water. The chore diverts their time from other important activities (for example attending school, caring for children, participating in the economy, relaxation). For each $1 invested,

the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates returns of $3 $34, depending on the region and technology. The WHO says that the lack of access to clean water and sanitation kills children at a rate equivalent of a jumbo jet crashing every four hours. Together they account for approximately one in six deaths among children younger than five years. Of India’s more than 2.3 million annual deaths among children, about 334 000 are attributable to diarrhoeal diseases.

In a recent report released in 2012 on the Progress of Drinking Water and Sanitation by the UNICEF - Children under five represent 90 per cent of all deaths caused by diarrheal diseases. In 2011, more children under the age of five died in India than anywhere else in the world. That’s 1.7 million children - over 4,650 child deaths a day - according report by the United Nations Children’s Fund. India stands out for the prevalence of diarrhea as a killer of infants. Diarrhea was responsible

for 13% of child deaths in India in 2010 - the second-highest rate after Afghanistan across the globe. Globally, improving water, sanitation and hygiene has the potential to prevent at least 9.1 per cent of the disease burden, or 6.3 per cent of all deaths. Principal transmission routes of disease Water based disease transmission by drinking contaminated water is responsible for significant outbreaks of faecal-oral diseases such as cholera and typhoid and include diarrhoea, viral hepatitis A, cholera, dysentery and dracunculiasis (Guineaworm disease) Water-washed disease occurs when there is a lack of sufficient quantity for washing and personal hygiene, which facilitates, among others, the spread of skin and eye infections e.g. trachoma) Diarrhoea is the most important public health problem affected by water and sanitation and can be both waterborne and water-washed. Hygiene promotion which includes the simple act of washing hands with soap and water can prevent one third of diarrhoeal disease and is therefore key in the prevention of waterborne diseases. Deaths due to water related diseases in India are in the range of nearly 80 per cent. The availability of fresh and good quality drinking water to all Indians remains a concern.
