Rupee fall attracting US companies to India: BofA

ank of America Corp ( BofA), India’s top- ranked takeover advisor, says the rupee’s depreciation is generating interest from US companies for setting up factories in Asia’s third-largest economy. The rupee trading at around 60 to 62 a dollar will lure overseas firms to invest in India, Kaku Nakhate, president and Bank of America India country head, said in an interview. The rupee has fallen 16% in the past 12 months making it the worst performing major Asian currency after the yen and rupiah. “US companies are looking for an alternative base in Asia outside China and India fits the bill,” said Nakhate. “We are getting

They want stability of rules in areas, including land acquisition and taxes.” The rupee’s drop is making India a more attractive destination amid rising wages in China and labour strife in Bangladesh. To benefit from the currency advantage, India will have to ease rules and reduce bureaucratic delays, said Vikas Halan, a senior analyst with Moody’s Investors Service. Companies in India face more red tape than in Zimbabwe and Haiti, according to the World Economic Forum. “I remain skeptical of the situation in India,” said Singapore-based Halan at Moody’s, which rates India at Baa3, the lowest investment grade.

“Most manufacturers in India are not doing well compared with China because of structural issues such as labour laws,” he said. China, the world’s second-largest economy, is targeting a 7.5% growth this year. The Reserve Bank of India forecasts the $1.8-trillion economy will expand 5.5%, while Goldman Sachs Group predicts a 4% growth. India ranks 104th in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index for burdensome bureaucracy, while China is ranked 14th. India’s overall position in the competitiveness index fell to 60, according to the 2013 report. The nation has lost 15 places since 2006. Delays in getting mining rights

Karnataka salesman ends life, names Prime Minister in suicide note

32-year-old salesman Santosh Gowda with a shoe company committed suicide, citing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s alleged “bad

administration” and failure to repel attacks by Pakistan as the cause. Santosh Kumar Appaswamy Gowda was a resident of Dasarahalli on Tumkur Road and a native of Sakleshpur, Chikmagalur district. The suicide came to light when a neighbour peeped though the half-open door of his singlebedroom residence around 7.30pm Thursday. Santosh was hanging from the ceiling by a rope. A Pre-University course dropout, Santosh had moved to Bangalore 12 years ago and worked as a salesman with various companies before joining a footwear major four years ago. Santosh, a bachelor, was upset that he couldn’t be a success in life. He was also addicted to alcohol and gambling, his colleagues told police. Police recovered a three-page suicide note in Kannada from the room. In the first two pages, Santosh lamented his inability to earn enough to buy assets and come to terms with life in Bangalore. The last page was devoted to the political situation in the country. He charged Prime Minister Manmohan

Singh with “failure in giving good administration”. Colleagues told police he was also depressed over his failure to take care of his parents in their old age. The body was shifted to MS Ramaiah Hospital for the autopsy and handed over to his family on Friday. Ishrat case: CBI gets court’s nod to quiz top cop Pandey

regarding the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. The probe agency on Friday

requested the court to permit investigators to question Pandey in view of some fresh leads the

agency has got in this case. Pandey’s counsel did not raise any objection, but insisted that a lawyer should be permitted to remain present within visible distance during the interrogation. Pandey is among seven policemen charged with conspiracy and murder. The CBI has also obtained permission from the court to question Vanzara again. Vanzara was interrogated by top CBI officials last week after he resigned from the government service. Pandey was arrested and sent to four-day police remand in August after he remained absconded for nearly two months. He was Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) in Ahmedabad when Ishrat and the three others - Javed Shaikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjad Ali Rana and Jishan Zohar were gunned down by crime branch sleuths on June 15, 2004. Gujarat police had then claimed they were terrorists, but CBI later concluded that the four were killed in a “fake” gunfight. Apart from Pandey, there were seven other policemen arrested in this case. One of them, police inspector Bharat Patel has been let off and not chargesheeted. The probe agency did not file chargesheet against five cops, which entitled them to default bail. However, suspended DySP NK Amin and Vanzara are still behind bars.

Air India’s Dreamliner aircraft develops technical snag before take-off in Chennai

n Air India Chennai-Delhi flight scheduled to depart at 10.40am was delayed

by more than two hours after the Dreamliner aircraft developed a technical snag before take-off on

Monday. The snag could not be rectified and passengers were disembarked

at around 1.45pm. Sources said that passengers had boarded and the flight was

ready for departure on time when a technical fault was noticed. The pilot and flight attendants did not explain the reason for the delay to the passengers, who were made to sit inside the plane for more than one and a half hours. Many lost their patience after an hour and started questioning the flight attendants about the delay. “They did not give us a satisfactory answer. The flight attendants did not tell us when the flight is likely to take-off also,” said a passenger. There was not much problem with ventilation and air conditioning as the doors were open and the aircraft was connected to the aerobridge. Lunch was served in flight as the delay got prolonged and the passengers were disembarked and were brought back to the terminal at 1.45pm. A senior official of Air India said, “Food and refreshments were served to passengers and alternative arrangements will be made to fly them to Delhi.” The official did not comment on the nature of the snag. Sources said that specially trained engineers were needed to handle the snag because the aircraft is a new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Sources in the jail said Lalu appears to be tension-free inside the jail. “I spoke to him. and inquired after his health, which is normal. A doctor offered to administer eye drops but he thanked him and did it himself. He is as good as he was outside the jail,” said jail superintendent-in-charge Virendra Kumar Singh. The doctors are, however, keeping a watch on him because the former Bihar CM suffers from a host of ailments. On Friday, Hotwar jail wore a deserted look with only 30 leaders and supporters meeting him between 3.30pm to 5pm. On September 30, when he was convicted, around 150 RJD workers had come to meet him. Till Thursday, a large number of RJD leaders were seen standing outside the jail with a fleet of cars parked outside throughout the day. The RJD leaders, most of whom came all the way from Bihar, had occupied several budget hotels in the city while senior leaders were lodged at Chankaya BNR. On Friday, visitors included Lalu’s son Tejaswi, RJD minister in Jharkhand government Annapurna Devi, Suresh Paswan, MLA Sanjay Yadav and Janardhan Paswan. Marxist Coordination Committee MLA Aroop Chatterjee also called upon him.

because of his appearance and religious beliefs. As a devout Sikh, Mr. Singh wears a turban and carries a kirpan. A kirpan is a small, spiritual sword that is sheathed and sewn to the waistband. It is designed and worn as an article of faith, much as a cross is worn by devout Christians. Contending, wrongly, that his kirpan was illegal, the officers demanded that Mr. Singh remove

it. When Mr. Singh explained that he was a Sikh and that the kirpan was a sacred religious article, the officers laughed at him and mocked his religious beliefs. One officer declared that all Sikhs are “depraved” and “terrorists.” They continued to taunt him, and forced Mr. Singh to circle his truck with his hands on his turban while they searched the vehicle. Finally, not content with this humiliation, they arrested him, claiming that Mr. Singh had refused to obey an officer’s lawful command. Mr. Singh’s ordeal did not end with the MDOT. When he returned to Mississippi on March 26, 2013, for his court date at the Pike County Justice Court, he once again suffered humiliation, harassment, and discrimination because of his religious beliefs. He further stated that Mr. Singh would not be allowed to re-enter the courtroom unless he removed “that rag” from his head and threatened to call Mr. Singh last on the docket if he continued to wear the religious headdress. As an observant Sikh, Mr. Singh wears a turban at all times as a reminder and public declaration of his connection to God. For him, the turban is an inseparable part of his Sikh religious identity: Like all Sikhs, Mr. Singh believes that a man cannot be considered a Sikh if he does not wear the turban and that unwrapping his turban and exposing his “naked” head in public is sacrilegious and shameful. Mr. Singh respectfully declined to remove his turban. As threatened, Judge Rimes forced Mr. Singh and his attorney to wait for several hours until every other litigant had been heard before allowing him into the courtroom. The Pike County Board of Supervisors recently recognized that Judge Rimes’s harassment of Mr. Singh was unacceptable. In response to an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the Board revised the County’s harassment and non-discrimination policy to explain that religious discrimination includes “requiring an individual

to remove a head covering or denying that individual access to a County office, building, program or activity because they are wearing a head covering, if that head covering is worn for religious reasons.” But Judge Rimes should not have needed a DOJ investigation or county policy to know that his conduct was impertinent and inappropriate. Our justice system is founded on the principle that every person entering a courthouse is equal before the law and is entitled to respect. Judge Rimes’s treatment of Mr. Singh – in particular his use of the slur “rag” and his effort to intimidate and embarrass Mr. Singh because of his minority faith – flouted his responsibility under the Mississippi Judicial Code of Conduct to uphold the dignity of the judiciary. The ACLU and United Sikhs also plan to file a complaint with the Mississippi Judicial Commission, asking officials to investigate Judge Rimes’s conduct and impose appropriate sanctions. The letter sent today to MDOT officials demands that they provide public documents relating to Mr. Singh’s detainment and arrest and urges them to implement an ongoing training program to educate officers about their responsibility to treat every person with dignity and to remain respectful of religious diversity.

Men involved in Sarabjit’s murder assaulted in jail

wo Pakistani death row prisoners accused of involvement in the murder of Indian national Sarabjit Singh were assaulted by wardens of Kot Lakhpat Jail here, official sources said on Saturday.

The prisoners — Amer Tamba and Mudassar — misbehaved with a warden during a search of their cell on Thursday. The warden called in more personnel and thrashed them, the sources said. Following the incident, both men

and some other death row prisoners went on hunger strike for a day. A senior official of Kot Lakhpat Jail’s administration told PTI that cell phones had been found in the possession of Tamba and Mudassar.

“They were admonished, and not tortured for this,” he said, refuting reports that they were beaten up. An inquiry was underway to ascertain how the prisoners got the mobile phones into their high-security barrack, he said.

“The matter was handled according to jail laws and the prisoners did not go on hunger strike,” the official claimed. Meanwhile, a judicial inquiry to ascertain how Tamba and Mudassar got possession of sharp edged “tools” to attack Sarabjit in April is underway but its findings are yet to come to light. On May 2, Sarabjit succumbed to fatal head injuries allegedly inflicted by Tamba, Mudassar and some other prisoners. Officials said the one man judicial commission of Justice Mazhar Ali Akbar Naqvi of Lahore high court had recorded the statements of some 40 witnesses but is yet to make public its findings. The commission also issued notices to Sarabjit’s relatives through the foreign ministry to record their statements and to produce any evidence they have regarding his death.However, Sarabjit’s family did not record their statements, the officials said. Tamba and Mudassar, in their statements to the commission, confessed to the crime and said they killed Sarabjit as they wanted to avenge the killing of people in Lahore and Faisalabad in bomb blasts allegedly carried out by the Indian national. Sarabjit had been sentenced to death for alleged involvement in a string of bombings in 1990.

Insurers in spot as medical advances push up treatment costs

Policy holders are opting for new procedures that are less painful and ensure faster recovery but cost substantially more. Take the case of coronary stent implants. Traditional metallic stents cost around Rs 40,000 on average. These were followed by drug-eluting stents. These are superior to metal stents as they release medicines which prevent complications, but cost Rs 1.5 lakh on average. But even they have now been overtaken by biodegradable stents, which cost above Rs 3 lakh each. According to Sanjay Datta, head, claims and underwriting at ICICI Lombard, procedures are normally accepted if they are proven to be the safer option and are not at the trial stage. “Treatment costs have gone up by 50-60% in some cases such as arthritis and brain stroke. Several other ailments such as spinal cord disorders, heart stroke, and hip and thigh fracture have witnessed an increase of 25 to 50% in treatment costs,”

he said. The challenge for insurers is in determining which procedures to admit, as some of them cost

double for the same outcome but use less invasive methods. In other fields, cutting-edge technology is used by those who can

afford it. However, in the case of health insurance it is available to all. The dilemma for insurers is whether to admit these claims

Decision on visa offering on arrival for 40 countries

n a significant move towards a liberal visa regime, the government will decide on offering visa on arrival to 40 countries and extend the facility to foreign tourists above 60 years of age from nearly all countries on Monday. The tourism ministry has proposed that India offer visa on arrival to 40 countries that send the maximum number of tourists to India including the US, the UK, Canada, Germany, France, Australia and Brazil among others. However, the list does not include countries from the neighbourhood, except China. The ministry has also recommended that senior citizens — foreign tourists above 60 years — should be given visa on arrival. A decision on these issues is likely to be taken in a meeting on Monday with includes representatives from the ministries of home affairs, external affairs, tourism, Planning Commission and the national security advisor. Currently, India offers visa on arrival to 11 countries including Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Laos and Myanmar. A total of 12,176 visa on arrivals have been issued till August 2013 with a growth of 29.4% as compared to last year. India issued 9,412 visa

on arrivals during the same period in 2012. Despite these encouraging numbers, India has one of the most restrictive visa regimes, comparable to Afghanistan, Pakistan and China. A “visa restriction index” released by Henley & Partners last week ranked India at 74 out of 93 countries, above

Asaram, 75, was arrested in August on charges of sexually assaulting a minor girl and has been

in prison at Jodhpur in Rajasthan since then. “We have registered two com-

plaints, one against Asaram and another against Narayan Sai of sexual assault, illegal confinement and other charges,” Surat Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana said on Sunday. ”The victims are two sisters,” he said. The complaint against Narayan Sai has been registered at Jhangirpura police station in Surat, while the one against his father Asaram has been transferred to Ahmedabad as the alleged incident happened there, Asthana said. The police will question Narayan Sai in connection with the complaint shortly, he said. The older sister in her complaint is understood to have accused Asaram of sexual assault, while the younger one filed a complaint against his son. The incidents reportedly happened between 2001 and 2006. On September 1, 75-year-old Asaram was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a schoolgirl and has been in prison at Jodhpur in Rajasthan since then. Shilpi, one of his close aides and the warden of the ashram in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh, where the alleged sexual assault took place, too, has been arrested and sent to judicial custody. On Monday, a court had extended Asaram’s judicial custody till October 11.

The government has decided to scrap a controversial proposal backed by three key ministries for the introduction of a coolingoff period for the officers who want to join politics and contest elections after retirement. The proposal supported by ministries of home, law and personnel was shown the red flag by the government’s top law officer, attorney general GE Vahanvati, who stated such a move would be against the basic features of the constitution. “Any such restriction whether by way of service rules or by way of an amendment of the election laws may not stand the test of valid classification under the article of the constitution which deals with equality before law,” he stated. “As far as contesting elections is concerned, it is a fundamental and basic feature of the constitution….Unless an individual incurs disqualification from contesting according to the law, this right cannot be curtailed till there is constitutional basis for doing so,” Vahanvati said. His opinion had been sought on a move initiated by the Election Commission, after it received complaints about

senior civil servants including police officers joining politics immediately after retirement and some of them even contesting elections from constituencies which were directly under their jurisdiction. The commission suggested that a certain cooling-off period may be provided for government officers between their retirement or quitting the job and joining a political party. The home ministry and the department of personnel and training (DoPT), in their comments, favoured an amendment in the Representation of the People Act to add a clause for specifying this time period, but the law ministry stated that no change in law was required since this could be done by changing the relevant service rules. Following divergent views on how to proceed on this issue, the matter was referred to Vahanvati, who stated the fundamental issue was whether the coolingoff period would be in harmony with the constitution. “The maintenance of independence and neutrality are relevant for government servants accepting a commercial employment after retirement. Shutdown: US moves closer to possibility of default

he United States moved closer to the possibility of the first-ever default on the government’s debt Sunday as Speaker John Boehner adamantly ruled out a House vote on a straightforward bill to boost the borrowing authority without concessions from President Barack Obama. With no resolution in sight, treasury secretary Jack Lew warned that Congress is “playing with fire” as he called on lawmakers to quickly pass legislation reopening the government and a measure increasing the nation’s $16.7 trillion debt limit. The government shutdown precipitated by the budget brinkmanship entered its sixth day with hundreds of thousands of federal employees furloughed, national parks closed and an array of government services on hold. Lew said Obama has not changed his opposition to coupling a bill to reopen the government and raise the borrowing authority with Republican demands for changes in the 3-yearold health care law and spending cuts. Boehner insisted that Obama must negotiate if the president wants to end the shutdown and avert a default that could trigger a financial crisis and recession that would echo the events of 2008 or worse. The 2008 financial crisis pushed the country into the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s. “We’re not going to pass a clean debt limit increase,” Boehner, the top House Republican, said in a interview. “I told the president, there’s

no way we’re going to pass one. The votes are not in the House to pass a clean debt limit, and the president is risking default by not having a conversation with us.” Boehner also said he lacks the votes “to pass a clean CR,” or continuing resolution, a reference to the temporary spending bill without conditions that would keep the government operating. Democrats argue that their 200 members in the House of Representatives plus close to two dozen pragmatic Republicans would back a so-called clean bill if Boehner just allowed a vote, but say he remains hamstrung by the hardcore conservative tea party caucus. “Let me issue him a friendly challenge. Put it on the floor Monday or Tuesday. I would bet there are the votes to pass it,” said Democratic senator Chuck Schumer. In a series of Sunday television appearances, Lew warned that on October 17, when he exhausts the bookkeeping maneuvers he has been using to keep borrowing, the threat of default would be imminent. “I’m telling you that on the 17th, we run out of the ability to borrow, and Congress is playing with fire,” Lew said. Lew said that while Treasury expects to have $30 billion of cash on hand on October 17, that money will be quickly exhausted in paying incoming bills given that the government’s payments can run up to $60 billion on a single day. Treasury issued a report on Thursday detailing in stark terms what could happen if the government ac-

tually defaulted on its obligations to service the national debt. “A default would be unprecedented and has the potential to be catastrophic,” the Treasury report said. “Credit markets could freeze, the value of the dollar could plummet, US interest rates could skyrocket, the negative spillovers could reverberate around the world.” Private economists generally agree that a default on the US debt would be extremely harmful, especially if the impasse was not resolved quickly. “If they don’t pay on the debt, that would cost us for generations to come,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. He said a debt default would be a “cataclysmic” event that would roil financial markets in the United States and around the world. Zandi said that holders of US treasury bonds would demand higher interest rates which would cost the country hundreds of billions of dollars in higher interest payments in coming years on the national debt. Republican senator Ted Cruz, a tea party favorite who has been a force in pushing congressional Republicans to link changes to the health care law in exchange for keeping the government running, spelled out his conditions for raising the borrowing authority. “We should look for three things. No. 1, we should look for some significant structural plan to reduce government spending. No. 2, we should avoid new taxes. And No. 3, we should look for ways to mitigate

the harms from `Obamacare,”’ Cruz said, describing the debt ceiling issue as one of the “best leverage the Congress has to rein in the executive.” Some Republicans, such as Rep. Steve King of Iowa, dismiss the warnings about a government default as an exaggeration, suggesting US credit won’t collapse and calling the talk “a lot of false demagoguery.” Asked how the standoff might end, Boehner said that he was uncertain: “If I knew, I’d tell you.” He added that Obama can call him any time to start negotiations to end the shutdown. “He knows what my phone number is.”Privately, administration officials say they don’t think Boehner and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell want a default as they realize it will be far worse than a shutdown, but the two don’t know how to avoid it or when to try. In one promising development, several hundred thousand furloughed

federal employees are headed back to work starting Monday, and those who remain at home or are working without paychecks are a step closer to getting back pay once the partial government shutdown ends. Defense secretary Chuck Hagel ordered nearly all of the 350,000 furloughed Pentagon civilian employees back on the job. Hagel said he based his decision on a Pentagon interpretation of a law called the Pay Our Military Act that was approved by Congress just before the start of the partial government shutdown. The Senate will try to vote this week on a bill that passed the House unanimously on Saturday to pay federal workers for days missed due to the shutdown. After rumours of LG bringing out the curved G Flex phablet hit the internet, specifications of Samsung’s curved smartphone have also leaked online. Tech website AndroidSAS has leaked the specifications of the upcoming Samsung smartphone. Contrary to earlier reports, it says that Samsung would not be bringing out a curved variant of the Galaxy Note 3, but instead would release an all-new handset. The report states that the device would feature a 4.7-inch curved display with 1280x720p resolution. This phone is said to be powered by a quad-core CPU and have 2GB RAM as well as an 8MP camera with dual-LED flash. While there is no word about the battery of the upcoming curved screen Samsung phone, it is expected to run on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) out of the box. Erik Fransen, whose research focuses on short-term memory and ways to treat diseased neurons, said that a brain exposed to a typical session of social media

browsing can easily become hobbled by information overload. The result is that less information gets filed away in your memory. The problem begins in a system of the brain commonly known as the working memory, or what most people know as short-term memory. That’s the system of the

brain that we need when we communicate, Fransen said. “Working memory enables us to filter out information and find what we need in the communication. It enables us to work online and store what we find online, but it’s also a limited resource,” he said. “At any given time, the working memory can carry up to three

or four items. When we attempt to stuff more information in the working memory, our capacity for processing information begins to fail.” “When you are on Facebook, you are making it harder to keep the things that are ‘online’ in your brain that you need.” “In fact, when you try to process sensory information like speech or video, you are going to need partly the same system of working memory, so you are reducing your own working memory capacity.” “And when you try to store many things in your working memory, you get less good at processing information,” he said. You’re also robbing the brain of time it needs to do some necessary housekeeping. The brain is designed for both activity and relaxation, Fransen said. “The brain is made to go into a less active state, which we might think is wasteful; but probably memory consolidation, and transferring information into memory takes place in this state. But despite the prohibitory orders, Sunday — Day 3 of a shutdown of Seemandhra (comprising coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema) — saw protesters pelt security forces with stones and the troops retaliate by firing rubber bullets and in the air. According to media reports, 20 policemen and 30 protesters were injured. Dozens of agitators were arrested. Protesters continued to target state Congress chief Botsa Satyanarayana’s properties. The coastal Andhra town has been roiling since the union cabinet’s October 3 decision to carve out a separate Telangana state out of Andhra. Power supply to all 13 districts of Seemandhra was hit by the strike called by electricity employees’ associations. They had announced Saturday that 70,000 workers of transmission, generation and distribution companies would go on an indefinite stir. Power production at the Kadapa and Vijayawada thermal units and Srisailam hydro units was hit. Further tripping could affect the entire southern grid, the employees said. Some media reports said even neighbouring Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala were affected. Power supply to Tirumala was severed in the morning but later restored following talks with striking employees.

As a result of the power situation, the South Central Railway cancelled the Jan Shatabdi Express running between Chennai Central and Vijayawada, scheduled to leave the city on Monday. Similarly, tomorrow’s Chennai Central-Gudur Passenger, Vijayawada-Chennai Central Pinakini Express and BitraguntaChennai Central Passenger have also been cancelled. 1 tbsp low fat organic milk Sprinkle of salt (to taste) Sprinkle of black pepper (to taste) 1 tsp olive oil 1/4 teaspoon brown mustard seeds 1/8 teaspoon turmeric 2 green onions, finely chopped

1/4 cup diced tomato 1/4 cup diced bell pepper Optional: handful diced baby spinach 3 egg whites, and a tiny bit of yolk (maybe 1/4 of the yolk)

Method:

Step 1: Combine salt, pepper, eggs and milk in a small bowl. Stir with a whisk until just blended (do not overbeat). Step 2: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add mustard seeds and turmeric; cook 30 seconds or until seeds pop, stirring frequently. Add onions; cook 30 seconds or until soft, stirring frequently. Add tomato, bell pepper and spinach; cook 1 minute or until very soft, stirring frequently. Step 3: Lower heat to medium. Pour egg mixture into pan; spread evenly. Cook until edges begin to set (about 2 minutes). Slide front edge of spatula between edge of omelette and pan. Gently lift edge of omelette, tilting pan to allow some uncooked egg mixture to come in contact with pan. Repeat procedure on the opposite edge. Step 4: Continue cooking until center is just set (about 2 minutes). Loosen omelette with a spatula, and fold in half. Carefully slide omelette onto a plate. Enjoy!

These byproducts are called “congeners,” complex organic molecules with toxic effects including acetone, acetaldehyde, fusel oil, tannins, and furfural. Bourbon has 37 times the amount of congeners

that vodka has. The new study found that while drinking a lot of bourbon can cause a worse hangover than drinking a lot of vodka, impairment in people’s next-day task performance is about the same for both beverages. “While the toxic chemicals called congeners could be poisonous in large amounts, they occur in very small amounts in alcoholic

beverages,” explained Damaris J. Rohsenow, professor of community health at the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University. “There are far more of them in the darker distilled beverages and wines than in the lighter colored ones. While the alcohol alone is enough to make many people feel sick the next day, these toxic natural substances can add to the ill effects as our body reacts to them.” Rohsenow added that few studies have looked at the effects of high- versus low-congener beverages on next-day hangover or performance, and some of those early studies were not careful to wait until breath alcohol levels (BALs) were close to zero before measuring performance, so results may have included some of alcohol’’s direct effects. “We wanted to investigate nextday effects of bourbon versus vodka while ensuring that BALs were zero or almost zero when we studied performance, and we used a variety of performance measures classified by their relevance to safety,” said Rohsenow. “We wanted to use a new hangover questionnaire that included only the symptoms that had been found to be valid in laboratory studies of hangover. We wanted to find out if bourbon’s effects the next day were due to different effects on sleep, so people’’s sleep patterns were recorded while they slept. Finally, we wanted to know if performance impairments the morning after drinking were associated with how hung-over the person felt.” To reach the conclusion, researchers recruited and paid 95 (58 women, 37 men) healthy,

heavy drinkers to participate in one acclimatization night, followed by two drinking nights. The participants drank bourbon or vodka to an average of 0.11 gpc BAL on one night, with a matched placebo on the other night, randomized for type and order. Polysomnography recordings were made overnight; self-report and neurocognitive measures were assessed the next morning. “First, while alcohol in the beverage did increase how hung-over people reported feeling the next morning compared to drinking a placebo, bourbon made people feel even worse than vodka did,” said Rohsenow. “Second, alcohol in the beverage did make people do worse when they needed to pay attention for a continuous period of time while making rapid accurate choices, but they did no worse after bourbon than after vodka on these tasks. Therefore, while people felt worse, they didn’t perform worse after bourbon than after vodka. However, people were not aware that they were performing worse since they thought their driving ability was not impaired in the morning even though they could not react as well.” “A third finding was that while alcohol in the beverages made people sleep less well because they woke up more during the night, this was no worse after bourbon than it was after vodka,” Rohsenow said. “This means that bourbon’’s greater effects on hangover are not due to it having greater effects on sleep. Fourth, people who reported more hangover symptoms also did worse in their ability to pay attention for a continuous period of time while making rapid accurate choices.”

If you want to travel back in time to experience the ancient legacy of India, then you should travel to Ajanta Ellora. Designated as a World Heritage Site Ellora preserves cave temples as a historical and artistic legacy. Unlike the site of Ajanta, Ellora was never ‘rediscovered’. Known as Verul in ancient times, it has continuously attracted pilgrims through the centuries to the present day. The Ajanta Ellora caves, dating back to the period between 350 AD and 700 AD are carved into the sides of a hill 30 kilometers from Aurangabad. The finest specimens of cave-temple architecture, the Ellora caves represent the three faiths of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, thus gaining the status of spiritual tourist attractions in India and Maharashtra in particular. The most magnificent of these cave temples is the Kailasa Temple, the world’s largest monolithic structure.

History

The World Heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora (near Aurangabad, Maharashtra) have rock-cut caves, hewn into the Sahyadri hills over 2,000 years ago by Buddhist monks. They contain some of the finest murals and sculptures India has ever produced. Most of the beautiful cave temples at Ajanta were built during the Gupta period. There are beautiful murals (paintings done on walls) in the caves, depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha. The caves are carved in the form of a Chaitya. Ellora houses 34 caves out of which 12 caves are Buddhists, 17 Hindus and the rest are Jains. They are fine examples of how various religions co-exist in vicinity. The Chaityas and Viharas set in these caves were retreat to many Buddhist monks. Ellora also has the 8th-century Kailashnath Temple, a freestanding monolith carved topdown out of mountain rock. The temple depicts scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The architecture of the Kailasa temple is breathtaking. Impressive figures were carved out on the walls of these caves with the help of simple tools like chisels and hammer. Amidst various images and beautiful paintings there are also sculptures of calm and tranquil Buddha. Ajanta and Ellora caves portray the harmony between Hindu, Buddhist and Jainism through its sculptures.

Climate The climate of Aurangabad is Temperate Climate with low relative humidity and diverse but not extreme weather conditions Aurangabad like any other part in India experiences three major seasons viz. The tourist attractions in Ajanta are undoubtedly the Ajanta and Ellora (link to Ellora page) caves, located near the city of Aurangabad in Maharashtra and about 300km northeast of the city of Mumbai. The 34 caves at Ellora and the 29 caves at Ajanta remained in obscurity for over a millennium, till John Smith, a British Army Officer, accidentally stumbled upon them while on a hunting expedition in 1819. Ajanta and Ellora are protected monument sites under the Archaeological Survey of India and has been included in the World Heritage list of monuments. Visitors who can not visit all the caves should visit atleast Cave 6, 10,11,12,14,15,16,21,29,30,30A,31,32,33,34. Inscriptions were found at Cave 15,21, 31 These murals and frescoes adorning the walls of these structures depict the story of Buddhism, spanning the period from 200 BC to 650 AD. Many of the caves have panels depicting stories from the Jatakas, a treasure trove of stories about the several incarnations of the Buddha. This makes the Ajanta caves a fascinating spiritual tourist attraction for Buddhists and scholars and researchers of Buddhism.

eepawali or Diwali is certainly the biggest and the brightest of all Hindu festivals. It’s the festival of lights (deep = light and avali = a row i.e., a row of lights) that’s marked by four days of celebration, which literally illumines the country with its brilliance, and dazzles all with its joy. Each of the four days in the festival of Diwali is separated by a different tradition, but what remains true and constant is the celebration of life, its enjoyment and goodness. The Origin of Diwali Historically, the origin of Diwali can be traced back to ancient India, when it was probably an important harvest festival. However, there are various legends pointing to the origin of Diwali or ‘Deepawali.’ Some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. Whereas in Bengal the festival is dedicated to the worship of Mother Kali, the dark goddess of strength. Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed God, the symbol of auspiciousness and wisdom, is also worshiped in most Hindu homes on this day. In Jainism, Deepawali has an added significance to the great event of Lord Mahavira attaining the eternal bliss of nirvana. Diwali also commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshman from his fourteen year long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana.

In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps) and burst crackers. These Four Days Each day of Diwali has its own tale, legend and myth to tell. The first day of the festival Naraka Chaturdasi marks the vanquishing of the demon Naraka by Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama. Amavasya, the second day of Deepawali, marks the worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth in her most benevolent mood, fulfilling the wishes of her devotees. Amavasya also tells the story of Lord Vishnu, who in his dwarf incarnation vanquished the tyrant Bali, and banished him to hell. Bali was allowed to return to earth once a year, to light millions of lamps to dispel the darkness and ignorance, and spread the radiance of love and wisdom. It is on the third day of Deepawali — Kartika Shudda Padyami that Bali steps out of hell and rules the earth according to the boon given by Lord Vishnu. The fourth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya (also called Bhai Dooj) and on this day sisters invite their brothers to their homes. The Significance of Lights & Firecrackers All the simple rituals of Diwali have a significance and a story to tell. The illumination of homes with lights and the skies with firecrackers

is an expression of obeisance to the heavens for the attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace and prosperity. According to one belief, the sound of fire-crackers are an indication of the joy of the people living on earth, making the gods aware of their plentiful state. Still another possible reason has a more scientific basis: the fumes produced by the crackers kill a lot of insects and mosquitoes, found in plenty after the rains. The Tradition of Gambling The tradition of gambling on Diwali also has a legend behind it. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Parvati played dice with her husband Lord Shiva, and she decreed that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the ensuing year. Diwali is associated with wealth and prosperity in many ways, and the festival of ‘Dhanteras’ (‘dhan’ = wealth; ‘teras’ = 13th) is celebrated two days before the festival of lights. Diwali for Sikhs For Sikhs, Diwali is particularly important because it celebrates the release from prison of the sixth guru, Guru Hargobind, and 52 other princes with him, in 1619. The Sikh tradition holds that the Emperor Jahangir had imprisoned Guru Hargobind and 52 princes. The Emperor was asked to release Guru Hargobind which he agreed to do. However, Guru Hargobind asked that the princes be

films Guzaarish and Black, I did not even have a slap in the film. So people are finding this different from what I normally do. The trailer captures the essence of the film and is most important as in one minute, you know whether there is something right or not. Try and live-in together before getting married: Kareena Kapoor

t takes more than just love to sustain a relationship. But making a marriage work involves a lot of sacrifice. And Kareena Kapoor Khan (KKK) understood that pretty early into her union. Nine months into her marriage that’s growing stronger by the day, KKK has transformed. The young bubbly girl is now a mature woman, who has no qualms about accepting the dynamics of the relationships that surround her. Marriage has done her good. Like her mother-in-law, Sharmila Tagore, who did some of her best films post marriage, Kareena too has been fortunate. She has landed some amazing work post her wedding — a feat that none of the recently-married actresses have accomplished, not even her sister Karisma Kapoor. KKK has signed four films after she married Saif Ali Khan. Although she’s happy with the way things are right now, Kareena gets edgy and recoils if pushed to talk about her personal life, the bond she shares with Saif or his family. But after some persuasion she opens up. Nonetheless, she’s alert and at times studied. Her conversation is discernibly different from when she was just the carefree Kareena. “Saif avoids intrusion; he likes to guard his private life closely. He doesn’t understand the media’s interest in his life, about what we eat, where we’re headed, who our guest is etc. And I totally endorse his views,” says the actress, fiercely guarding conversations that sometimes veer towards Saif’s children (Sarah and Ibrahim) and her relationship with his family. Excerpts from the interview. What was the brouhaha regarding your married surname; Khan? The media should know it better. As for me, the day I married Saif, I became Mrs Saif Ali Khan. Saif’s family is very cosmopolitan and liberal. I love and deeply respect them. But at heart, I’m a very traditional girl.

Are you still possessive of each other?

Where there is love, there is going to be possessiveness. I’m possessive, but I’m not interfering. I don’t question him about his shootings or his co-stars and we both like it that way. He is a working man and I let him be like that. It’s the same with him. He is never curious about my choice of films or my co-stars. He is just supportive and is always there for me when my film releases.

What’s your take on classics? Would you like to reprise any role that your mother-in-law or any other yesteryear actress has played in the past?

I truly believe that their era was the golden era. They were just wonderful. Everything was done so tastefully. They were truly classics! Look at the repertoire of my mother-in-law’s films, for instance. Can I even match up to them? No way. I don’t want to ruin it by reprising her roles. So I believe classics should be untouched.

Do you miss being single?

I was never really single throughout my career. So there’s no question of missing it. In the last five years with Saif, I have been committed to him and now the commitment is only getting deeper. I feel like he makes me a more interesting person because he makes for enriching company. He keeps me engaged in every way.

Have you been to Saif’s ancestral hometown, Pataudi?

I haven’t visited Pataudi till now. Work doesn’t permit us that luxury. Saif has been out of the country since the last six months; either shooting or travelling. But, I have been to Bhopal, the place where Saif’s family is originally from. We did that when Saif was shooting for Aarakshan (2011) and we’d visited all the houses Saif grew up in.

You initially backed out of working with Emraan Hashmi, but later signed a film with him. Why?

When they approached me initially, I didn’t have the dates. But now it’s all sorted. I’m looking forward to working with Emraan. I have heard nice things about him and his professionalism. My sister-in-law, Soha (Ali Khan), says he’s quite an intelligent guy.

After marriage, actresses in Bollywood usually pick certain kinds of roles. What kind of roles you want to play?

So far, I’ve been lucky to have chosen the right kind of scripts and I hope I can continue to do so. As far as my choice of roles goes, it would be driven by how my fans would like to see me.

Do you watch movies?

Frankly, we (Saif and I) don’t watch Hindi films. I had stopped watching those (Hindi films) about eight years ago with an exception sometimes. But, Saif doesn’t watch them at all. The last films I watched were 3 Idiots (2009) and Cocktail (2012). Besides, we act in them. So, to go back and watch the same thing again gets quite monotonous. I think Gangs Of Wasseypur (2012) was a great film. And, unless it’s a great film and I want to unwind, I don’t watch Hindi cinema. I am more into English television shows.

What’s your plan eventually? Do you want to accompany your husband with his production house work or sit back and enjoy your family life?

You mean do I become a producer with Saif? Oh no! I have been around too many producers and have seen what they go through. It’s quite a high stress job.

Given a choice, who would you prefer working with today — the older lot of actors or the younger ones?

An actor cannot have such choices. And in my case, I have walked on both the sides of the fence. I have largely taken up roles that have substance. Yes, I have also

done movies that were typical song-and-dance kinds. But, I enjoy both. The script should hook me and stir my excitement. If I feel a script is good, I will take it up.

Considering you and Saif come from diverse cultures, what have you picked up from him?

He has got a spectacular taste in music and that has impressed me majorly. I was into jazz and blues. But Saif has introduced me to hard and soft rock music. Today, I can appreciate a Dire Straits and a Led Zeppelin, as much as I appreciate other genres. Besides music, over the last five years I have learnt from him the way to appreciate and choose better roles even if it is the smallest one. He says the issue with us, actors, is that we always look for the main role.

Have you brought about any change in Saif?

He’s become grounded and more responsible and I take the entire credit for instilling these qualities in him.

What is it that you are keenly looking forward to?

A nice life with Saif and spending time with our families. Of course, looking forward to more acting assignments, as that’s my passion. My career is important, but I am a person who needs personal space as well. I want to live life on my own terms, something that I do anyway. I want to work and travel more, and live a satisfying life. I have realised that in our pursuit of success, we forget to live life. I don’t want to be trapped by that.

Anil, Manoj voiceovers for 3D ‘Mahabharat’

ollywoodactorsAnilKapoor and Manoj Bajpayee will do the voiceovers for the upcoming ‘Mahabharat’ animated 3D mythological drama. While Anil has lent his voice for Karna, Manoj has dubbed for Yudishtir’s character in the animated story.

The actors were spotted at the Future Works Studio in Andheri recently and the film’s producer Jayantilal Gada confirmed their addition to the cast. “Both Anil and Manoj have shown full commitment. It was very gracious on their part to agree to impart voices to two very important

characters in my film,” Gada said in a statement. Anil took 15 days to complete his work, but Manoj finished the dubbing for his character in just four days. “Anil gave a lot to my film. Despite his hectic schedule, he took time off to come to the dubbing studio for

more than two weeks,” Gada said. The animated film has a star studded cast of voices with megastar Amitabh Bachchan giving his voice for Bheeshma, Vidya Balan has lent her voice for Draupadi, Sunny Deol for Bheem and Ajay Devgn for Arjun. But the makers are still in

search for a voice for the villain Duryodhan. Gada is planning to release the film this Diwali but says his movie will not clash with Krrish 3. “No we’re not going to clash with Hrithik Roshan’s film, we’ll release a week before or later, but in the festive season,” he said.

Now, in real life too, it seems, Aamir has taken up a role he’s never been associated with before: Aamir has turned a stay-athome dad, though only for a short while. The actor, who recently wrapped the shoot of his upcoming film, Dhoom:3, has had a rather busy year. He was also caught up with the shooting schedule of Rajkumar Hirani’s P.K. Now, he’s found the perfect reason to take a break and stay at home — to take care of his son, Azad, who will turn two in December. This decision of his has allowed his wife, filmmaker Kiran Rao, to go on a vacation with some of her friends. A source close to the actor reveals, “Aamir got the chance to spend some quality time with his son, Azad. Since his wife Kiran (filmmaker) is travelling, the actor has turned stay-at-home dad to take care of the little one.” Kiran, we’re told, is on a 10-day vacation to Arunachal Pradesh. Adding to glitz was a light and sound show inaugurated by Amitabh Bachchan in the presence of the more than 500 guests that included socialites,industrialists and Bollywood celebs, at City Palace’s Sarvato Bhadra Chowk. Depicting the history of the Kachhawa dynasty, the show, a handiwork of sculpture lighting artist Patrick Rimoux, presented a unique and colourful experience for the guests. But, for the upcoming episodes they will be shooting on the sets of ‘Bigg Boss’ show. “It’s not an easy job to reconstruct a huge set in such a short time. The channel is also trying to get the best floor to reconstruct a new set. We have a huge set up and we don’t want to compromise with it,” he added.

co-star Hrithik Roshan that he wanted to show them his vision of the evil in the superhero flick. He got his make-up and hair done as per the conception, wore the costume, sat in a wheel-chair and went over to meet the Roshans in the get-up at their residence. Within five seconds of walking into the room to meet Vivek, the Roshans are said to have exclaimed, ‘Perfect!’ And that’s how Krrish 3 got its Kaal.

WAR CHHOD NA YAAR, is certainly first of its kind film in India, a war comedy. Directed by Faraz Haider, assistant to Dibaker Banerjee for OYE LUCKY! LUCKY OYE! starring stars of the caliber of Sharman Joshi, Soha Ali Khan, Jaaved Jafferi , Sanjay Mishra, Mukul Dev and Manoj Pahwa, the film is produced by AOPL Pvt. Ltd, a known name in the south film industry. Sending a noble message of peace and dealing with a serious issue like war in a light hearted manner, the music of the film is helmed by fresh talent, Aslam Keyi. So let’s check out the soundtrack of India’s first war comedy. Say no to war, the message behind the film is evident from the nice , racy title track, ‘War Chhod Na Yaar’ and is rendered by the new item crooner of Bollywood, Bappi Lahiri , in his mast lovable style. Aiding him in his effort is Rimi Dhar and Candy D’Souza who provide the interesting back up and rap vocals. The highlight of the track are the lyrics, which despite dealing with a very serious issue are light hearted and humorous, keeping in mind the storyline of the film. The ‘sureeli’ Shreya is back to her melodic best with ‘Main Jagoon Aksar’ in the enchanting love duet where she is supported superbly by Javed Ali as both the singers complement each other fully. The ‘qawwali’ chorus (Ali Aslam) is the USP of the track and the song is a sure fire hit for Sonu Nighm Sharman-Soha.

WAR CHHOD NA YAAR

There is another version of ‘Main Jagoon Aksar’ and here Shujath Ali Khan replaces Javed Ali and is a nice departure from the original. ’Phat Gaya’ appears to be a typical army ‘fauji’ song of camaraderie (slightly inspired in parts from the evergreen number, ‘Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawano Ka’) but it is not patriotic as it has high political overtones and is a situational number

that deals with the nitty-gritty of war and its fall out. And no one better than Daler Mehdi, whose robust and energetic vocals are ideally suited for this situational number. The lyrics are once again the winner here as they successfully convey the message and add as a narrative to the plot. The patriotic ‘Mharo Desh Mahan’ is rendered by Kailash

Kher in his popular and well loved high pitched and full of emotions style and is a nice number that talks about India, though mostly rural. The use of Hindustani musical arrangements and Rajashthani flavor enhance the rustic/ ‘desi’ flavor. ‘Mharo Desh Mahan’ ethnic mix is well done. The audio of WAR CHHOD NA YAAR is overall a good, and

surprisingly pleasant hear. Both the versions of ‘Main Jagoon Aksar’ and ‘Khwabon Si Jo’ are classy and they are our picks while the rest of the songs are situational. The album needs aggressive promotion and more time to make a mark, as it was released just a few days back, (23rd September), while the film is all set to hit the screens on October 11.

India’s stealth frigate INS Sahyadri set sails for Australia

o boost naval ties with Australia, India’s newly commissioned INS Sahyadri — a guided missile stealth frigate — will participate in the International Fleet Review (IFR) to be held in Sydney this month. During the IFR from October 4, the Shivalik-class multi-role frigate will participate in various exercises scheduled by Royal Australian Navy (RAN). It will also showcase India’s indigenous capabilities in building frontline warships. INS Sahyadri’s participation in the IFR will serve to reinforce naval ties, and also contribute towards enhancing interoperability with the RAN and other participating navies, said an official statement. The overarching aim of the visit is to strengthen the bonds of friendship and camaraderie between India and Australia who are pursuing a common destiny of peace and prosperity, the statement said. Besides, the ship will make port calls at Fremantle and Jervis Bay, it said. INS Sahyadri, commissioned in July last year, has a team of 24 officers and 250 sailors on board. It’s long range anti-ship missiles, medium and short-range surface to air missile augmented

by the medium-range gun and close in weapon system provide a formidable shield against air threats.

With two integral multi-role helicopters and anti submarine rockets, the vessel is also capable of thwarting sub-surface

threats. The ship’s sensors provide an external surveillance umbrella ensuring early detection and

classification of threats in all three dimensions — air, surface and sub-surface.

‘Besharam’ is not about doing vulgar things: Ranbir

Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of the protagonist with a happy-go-lucky attitude, they say, will make audiences connect with the positive aspects of the term. “It’s not about doing vulgar things or getting nude. It’s about following your instincts and doing what you feel like doing, not what you are forced to do,” explains Ranbir. The actor adds, “The film’s message hits bullseye. My character doesn’t fear criticism. He couldn’t care less for appreciation. He does what has to be done. The website features content from films, including trailers, songs, making of videos, clips, etc. Users can also keep a track of Bollywood trends, news and insights, including box office figures. The vision is to create a platform where word-ofmouth on movies matters most. It will also benefit actors, directors and producers as they get a customised page that includes statistics and analytics for their purview. afael Nadal will return to number one in the world rankings after his semifinal opponent Tomas Berdych retired injured at the China Open Saturday, capping an astonishing comeback from injury for the 13-time Grand Slam champion. The Spanish world number two only needed to make the final in Beijing to edge ahead of Novak Djokovic in the new rankings, which will be announced by the ATP on Monday. Nadal, who last toped the rankings in July 2011, has enjoyed a remarkable season, returning from injury to dominate the hardcourt tournaments. pire Young Achiever’s award. Rani, who was the vice-captain of the Junior National team in the recent seventh FIH Junior Wom-

en’s World Cup, played a crucial role in India’s bronze medal-winning feat in Germany and was also declared the best player of

the tournament. The individual award in the Junior World Cup was the fourth time Rani had received any such

recognition in an international tournament and is the only Indian female player to be nominated as FIH Best Young Player of the Tournament at the women’s hockey World Cup in 2010. Rani was nominated to the Asian All Stars Team and FIH All Stars Team, both in 2010. She was also the top goal scorer in the FIH World League Round 2 held here earlier this year. “Her dedication and tireless effort to play hockey and achieve glorious success at this young age is a motivation for budding hockey players of our nation,” HI secretary general Narinder Batra said in a statement congratulting Rani. Rani added: “I am very happy for winning this award and this is the best phase of my life. I would like to thank my parents, coaches and Hockey India for their contribution in my game. Playing for my country is a complete honour and I will continue to work hard to win more games for my team in the coming years.” The 19-year-old Rani, who made her international debut in 2008, had completed 100 international caps against hosts Malaysia in the recently-concluded eighth Women’s Asia Cup at Kuala Lumpur.

lisha Abdullah’s dream to train at Women’s Road Racing Training Camp in Spain was dashed as the Spanish embassy rejected her visa application. The Chennai racer had received an invitation from the Commission for Women in Motorcycling (CWM) to ride the super powerful BMW 1000RR bike along with women riders from across the world at the Circuit of Albacete (Spain) from October 4-6. It was also an opportunity for Alisha to get selected for the World championship for women, which will be launched next year. “I had sent my visa application enclosing the invitation from CWM about 25 days back. I got a reply last Thursday from the embassy saying my visa was rejected as the invitation didn’t have enough details! I am shattered,” the 24-year-old said. It was a common invite which the sports federation had sent to all the riders but the embassy sought a personal invitation for considering the application. “Immediately after my visa was rejected, I called back CWM, which was kind enough to send me another invite but the weekend holiday meant the processing was delayed,” Alisha explained. Her last hope was to get it cleared by Monday as she was to fly out on Tuesday night, but the embassy asked her to apply for an appeal paper. It usually takes a month to process the papers but they offered to get it done in a week. It was still not good enough. “The training is scheduled for this week. What is the use of getting the visa after the programme is over? I even had the no objection certificate from FMSCI (Indian motor sports federation). How could they do this to a sportsperson? It was a wonderful opportunity for me to represent India. I’m feeling so bad that I don’t even want to get out of my house now,” the rider lamented. The Spanish Consulate-General, based in Mumbai, couldn’t be reached for comments.

ccording to a new study, women have different ways of using the visual centers of their brains. Experts suggest that while females are better at distinguishing colors, males are more sensitive to fine detail and rapidly moving stimuli. There are high concentrations of the male sex hormone (androgen) receptors throughout the cerebral cortex in the brain, particularly in the visual cortex, which is in charge of processing images. Guys have 25% more neurons in the visual cortex than females because, during embryogenesis, androgens are responsible for controlling the development of those neurons. The vision of men and women was compared by a team of researchers from Brooklyn and Hunter Colleges of the City University of New York. The experts observed people over the age of 16 from both college and high school, including students and faculty. Both sexes needed to have normal color vision and 20/20 sight (with glasses or contacts was considered fine), in order to participate. Scientists learned that the color vision of men was shifted, after they asked the volunteers to describe colors shown to them

across the visual spectrum. It also became clear that male subjects needed a slightly longer wavelength to experience the same hue as the female subjects. It was not as easy for men to discriminate between colors as it was for women, meaning that the males had a broader ranger in the

center of the spectrum. In order to measure contrastsensitivity functions (CSF) of vision, the researchers used an image of light and dark bars that were either horizontal or vertical, asking the participants to decide which one they saw. When the light and dark bars were alter-

ased on the knowledge that cancer cells grow indefinitely, the general belief is that senescence could act as a barrier against tumor growth and has the potential of being used as a cancer treatment. According to findings published in the 19th January issue of the open-access journal PLoS Computational Biology, a collaboration between a cancer biologist from the University of Milano, Italy, and two physicists, from the National Research Council of Italy and from Cornell University, has shown that although cell senescence occurs spontaneously in melanoma cells, it does not stop their growth, which is sustained by a small population of cancer stem cells. The study examines the association between melanoma and senescence, which is the normal process in which cells decline and eventually stop duplicating after reaching maturity. The researchers observed the long-term evolution of melanoma cell populations by monitoring the number of senescent cells, and discovered a slowing in growth with the majority of the cells turning senescent after three months. However, growth did not stop and was

eventually resumed at its initial rate until the senescent cells had nearly disappeared. The researchers applied a mathematical model of the experimental data using the cancer stem cell hypothesis, in which a sub-group of cancer cells multiply indefinitely, and therefore remain unaffected by senescence. These cancer stem cells produce a larger population of cancer cells, which are only able to replicate a certain number of times. The results of the model achieved an indirect confirmation that cancer stem cells are present in melanoma, an issue that remains to be controversial in the cancer research community. The researchers conclude that even though a large percentage of cancer cells are susceptible to senescence, inducing senescence is unlikely to provide a successful therapeutic strategy because these cells are not important for tumor growth. The say however, that the indirect evidence of cancer stem cells in melanoma could potentially enable the development of new strategies for the treatment of specific types of cancer. However, the strong resistance to drug induced senescence that may be found in the cancer stem cells will present

a mental health problem than those who are not in debt, a new study has revealed.

Researchers from the University of Southampton, along with a researcher from Kingston Uni-

versity, carried out a systematic review on all previous research which looked at the relationship

between health problems and unsecured debt. They conducted a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;meta-analysisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, the first time this has been done on the issue, to statistically combine the results of previous studies involving nearly 34,000 participants. Less than nine per cent of participants with no mental health problems were in debt, compared to more than a quarter of participants being in debt and with a mental health problem. The team found that those in debt were also more likely to suffer from depression, drug dependence and psychosis and the results also suggested that those who die by suicide are more likely to be in debt. Dr Thomas Richardson, Clinical Psychologist from the University of Southampton who led the research, said that the research showed a strong relationship between debt and mental health; however it is hard to say which causes which at this stage. It might be that debt leads to worse mental health due to the stress it causes. It may also be that those with mental health problems are more prone to debt because of other factors, such as erratic employment. Equally it might be that the relationship works both ways.

New research shows that a vast majority of backaches are the result of cumulative effects of lifestyle that we often ignore. Simple daily habits such as hunching to read your smart phone or slouching in front of your computer can, over time, strain your spine and the surrounding muscles, leaving you vulnerable to serious back in-

jury. Here are the habits to watch out for: Sitting still Forget heavy lifting — sitting hunched over a computer all day is poison for your back. Research has found that people with desk jobs suffer more back pain than those working in manual jobs. Using your joints and spine strengthens them, reducing risk of injury. But inactivity weakens them, which makes you more prone to problems. Fix it: Get up and walk around

for two minutes, at least once an hour, and improve your posture while you’re sitting down. Aim for a “neutral spine position”, in which everything is in line, with no strain spots. Your shoulders should be relaxed, feet flat on the floor, and eyes in line with the middle of your screen. Sneezing This seemingly innocuous, activity is apparently a very common cause of back pain — thanks to its sheer force. A sneeze’s speed of release can be up to 100 miles

per hour, and our first instinct is to cover our faces and turn away. According to Janet Wakley, author of The Smart Guide to Back Care, this instinctive turn is terrible for our backs. “Spontaneously twisting to the side, combined with the force used by the chest muscles to sneeze, can wrench back muscles in a second,” she says. Fix it: Turn your body when you’re about to sneeze, so that your back remains straight. Wearing high heels, pumps Yes, tottering in high heels for long periods can make your back sore, but too much time in the wrong flats can do just as much damage. Heels cause problems because they force your foot forward, altering your body’s angle. Since your weight isn’t evenly distributed over the spine, it can trigger pain from your knees all the way up to your back. But ballet pumps and flip-flops aren’t any better as they allow your foot to slide around. The lack of stability that this causes puts pressure on your spine. Fix it: Ensure your shoe holds your foot firmly in place. Alternate between high heels, mids and flats. By wearing different shoes every day, you lessen your chance of experiencing long-term problems caused by using only one type of shoe. Your favourite bra Figures suggest 80 per cent women wear an ill-fitting bra. This can cause several muscular

problems. A bad bra can lead to hunching and sore neck and back muscles, while one that gives proper support can minimise that forward hunch and relieve pain. Fix it: Get measured by a trained bra-fitter. Go for styles with wider shoulder straps or a racer-style back, which offer better support and draw you to pull your shoulders back. Your pot belly Even an extra couple of pounds around your middle makes your pelvis tilt forward. This puts it out of alignment as your body works to rebalance itself. Also, this means that your spine isn’t getting enough support from your abdominal muscles, which can cause excessive strain on your lower back. Fix it: Don’t do sit-ups — they won’t flatten your tummy if there’s fat on top. Fat-burning cardiovascular exercises, such as running or swimming, for 45 minutes, three times a week, are more effective at shifting the bulge. Your Smartphone The head-down position that you use to look at phones, iPads and laptops strains the muscles in the neck and the pain can extend to your lower back. Using them for hours on end means your body will eventually start to adopt this hunched position. Fix it: Make sure you take frequent screen breaks. Try to look straight ahead and not down at your screen.
