ARCHITECTURAL SUMMARY by Rakel Pariente
The most important architectural prices of this year were given, so now is time to sum up all the architectural work in 2014, and discover the new genies of the architecture. Here we have some of the most relevant prizes in this area.
PRIZTKER PRICE:
The most important and prestigious architecture prize in the world. It is given by the Hyatt Foundation, and it was created in 1979 by a family of Chicago owner of the Hotel Chain Hyatt. The price is $100.000, a certificate and since 1987 a bronze medal. This year 2014, Shigeru Ban, a Japanese architect, was the winner of this prize regarding to his professional career. -
Shigeru Ban: born in Tokyo and studied on the Southern California Institute of Architecture and continued in The Cooper Union School. In 1985 founded his own architecture studio. In 1995 started to work for the United Nations (UN) for the refugees (ACNUR) and founded the ONG VAN (Voluntary Architects Network). His main characteristic is work with sustainable materials, showing us a worry about the environmental. He is specializing in constructions after tragedies such as tsunamis or earthquake. ROYAL GOLD MEDAL:
This prize is given by The Real Institute of British Architect, to recognize the contribution (individual or in group) to the international architecture. The first prize was given in 1848 to Charles Robert Cockerell. This year is Joseph Rykwert, the British architect, who received the prize. Black tie dinner:

Joseph Rykwert: born in Warsaw and studied in the Bartlett School of Architecture (University College of London) and the Architectural Association in London. He is the most important architecture historian of this century. He was always linked to the educational and research fields at the University. Now, he is honours professor of the Pennsylvania University and teaches Art History there. He has a wide literary and research works, some of them are: “The seduction of a place”, “The dancing column” and the last one “Body and building”.
