ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING
Quest:
NEW!
ELL Literacy Program
Mastering Reading, Writing, Listening &
Reading, Writing, & Listening
Overview of Teaching English Language Learners English Language Learners (ELLs) are a diverse population of students who are learning English in school. They come from numerous cultural and economic backgrounds and they live in all 50 states. It is important to remember that ELL students arrive in the classroom not as empty vessels, but as individuals who are rich with experiences and varied backgrounds. Teachers must attempt to understand these students so they can meet their instructional needs.
Quest: ELL Literacy Program Quest: Teacher Resource Guide Quest: ELL Literacy Program is a flexible instructional program designed to teach reading, writing, and speaking skills to ELL students. The Teacher Resource Guide provides an extensive overview of the ELL instructional process and directions for each component of the program: Think Reading, Reading Skill-by-Skill, and RALLY! Listening.
Developing proficiency in a second language is a complex process that involves extending beyond the learner’s first language into a new language system, a new culture, and a new way of thinking and acting. Academic language (or “classroom English”) is more complex and abstract than social language and is learned incrementally over time. By recognizing the level of language proficiency, teachers can utilize strategies needed to expedite ELLs’ academic English development.
The Guide includes instructional strategies as well as suggestions for implementation of the program. Its intent is to provide ELL students opportunities to listen, speak, read, and write. Included are suggested instructional strategies to implement each of the Quest components with ELL students.
Each instructional strategy indicates the levels of literacy.
• Paraphrasing (active listening and speaking) • Visual Connections (help link ideas & concepts) • Non-Linguistic Representation (creating non-linguistic representations of new vocabulary words) • Cooperative Learning Groups (students work collaboratively in groups) • Writing Frames (support structure to help students use words correctly in a sentence or paragraph)
It is important to remember that ELL students have a wealth of knowledge and experiences. The RALLY! ELL Literacy Program includes 3 instructional components: Reading, Writing, Listening & Speaking Instruction: • Think Reading,® written by Dr. Roger Farr: An interactive guided reading program, which includes vocabulary development, strategies for reading and writing.
Instructional strategies provide in-depth teacher instruction to address all aspects of ELL learning for academic success.
• Skill-by-Skill Series: A scaffolded instructional reading comprehension series focused on the key skills for understanding what is read. • RALLY! Listening: A resource which contains student and teacher materials necessary to teach listening comprehensiion.
