Scott D. Reich
to Speak About His Soon to Be Released Book
The Power of Citizenship: Why John F. Kennedy Matters to a New Generation Thursday, October 17 at 7:30 pm Fifty years after John F. Kennedy's death, we find ourselves in an era of unprecedented political division and cynicism, where politicians talk past one another and the spirit of “ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country” is less visible than it should be. Filled with perceptive insights and verve, The Power of Citizenship is the dynamic book we need to bring us back on track. Author Scott D. Reich asserts that the most powerful element of Kennedy's legacy is his emphasis on the theme of citizenship, and that a rededication to the values Kennedy promoted is critical to our country's future. Evoking the hopes and aspirations of the 1960s, Reich recaptures the excitement of the Kennedy era, artfully blending the romance of Camelot with the new frontiers of today. He not only identifies modern challenges but also offers a tangible blueprint for how we can improve our public discourse, be good citizens and lift our nation to new heights of greatness. Congressman Joe Kennedy III (D-MA) says, “Scott Reich's book delivers a message of service and citizenship that is as essential today as it was when President Kennedy first asked what we could do for our country.” Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley calls it "unique and compelling," and historian David Eisenhower labels it “the best and most interesting book written on the Kennedy presidency in decades.” Part history and part call to action, The Power of Citizenship hones in on the very essence of what makes JFK so inspirational and timeless.
Scott D. Reich is an attorney at the law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, where he has been practicing law since 2008. He serves on the boards of several institutions, including the national board of the Union for Reform Judaism, the umbrella arm of the Reform Movement; the School for Language and Communication Development, a K-12 organization providing educational services to children with autism and language disorders; Temple Sinai of Roslyn; and the College Council of SUNY-Old Westbury. Reich performs extensive pro bono work, which includes work for the Brooklyn Family Court, the New York Legal Assistance Group, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County. In 2013, The Jewish Week featured him as one of their "36 Under 36." Reich earned a B.A. in history and communication with honors from the University of Pennsylvania, where he received the Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for authoring the "Best Honors Thesis" at the Annenberg School for Communication. He went on to earn a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he was president of his class and received the prestigious "Class Award" for "the student who best exemplifies the spirit of Penn Law." Please join us for what promises to be a fascinating and inspirational evening! Books will be available for sale and there will be a post-talk book signing.

Anat Malkin Almani and Bracha Malkin “The Malkin Duo” Sunday, October 20 at 4:00 pm
Temple Sinai is delighted to welcome sisters Anat Malkin Almani on violin and viola and Bracha Malkin on violin, The Malkin Duo. Shortly after the duo formed in 1995, they found themselves a winner of the Artist International Auditions. Their sold-out debut recital in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall brought rave reviews. The Duo is also the winner of the 2003 Trinity Concert Series Auditions, which entitled them to a recital in St. Paul’s Chapel at Ground Zero in New York. Since their debut, the duo has given recitals all over the world. In his book entitled Violin Virtuosos from Paganini to the 21st Century, Henry Roth named both Anat and Bracha as two of the “gifted young violinists who are among the vanguard leading the march of violin art into the 21st century.” Critics have said of their playing that “not only can such interpretation/insight bring momentary joy to the listener; it will leave a footprint in his soul.” The Malkin Duo has an expansive repertoire, including works for both two violins and works for violin and viola. In addition to their regular concert schedule, Anat and Bracha are actively involved in community outreach and educational programs, performing annually in various venues.
Free to All. Bring your family and friends.

Generation Equality/Kulanu Shabbat Friday Oct 11 at 6:30pm
Friday, October 11, is National Coming Out Day, a day when we raise our voices and come out in support of the LGBTQ community. Temple Sinai is proud to be hosting special Shabbat service lead by the Kulanu Committee and Generation Equality. We hope you will join us this evening and show your support. There is strength is numbers! About Kulanu “All of Us” The Gay and Lesbian Inclusion Committee (GLIC) was created in 1997. Since its inception, GLIC marched with the Temple banner in the Gay Pride Parade, presented LGBT issues for discussion at Friday evening services and supported these issues by petition to federal, state and local officials. The committee has made a significant contribution to the progress attained to date by the LGBT community. The recent name change reflects their ongoing intention to be inclusive of all people. Kulanu continues to attract new members and strives to make all individuals feel welcome in our synagogue. Join Kulanu at their first meeting of the year on September 24 at 7:30 pm. All are welcome. What is Generation Equality? Since September 2012, a group of teens has been gathering in the youth lounge every other week to discuss issues that are very important to them. This group is called Generation Equality. One of their main focuses this year is LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning) Rights. The mission of Generation Equality is to “create a safe environment for every human being, as well to advocate and share our voices on issues that are important to us and our community.” The students who are participating are a very enthusiastic and passionate group and look forward to Albany Advocacy Day where they will lobby their state representatives on equal rights, among other things. Temple Sinai Founder Julius Eisenstein Shares Survivor Story at Kristallnacht Service When Temple Sinai founding member Julius Eisenstein enrolled his children in religious school in the 1950s, World War II and his youth in Poland and in Nazi concentration camps were not far behind. He kept his memories to himself until many years later, but now relates his Holocaust survival story to adults and school children in New York and Florida. Born in Tomaszow, Poland, Eisenstein was one of five children. Julius, his brother and his future wife survived several camps, including Auschwitz and Dachau, where American troops liberated him. A photographer captured that moment, and 40 years later, Julius was reunited with the U.S. soldier who was in the photo with him. During the 6:30 p.m. Friday night, November 8 service commemorating Kristallnacht, Eisenstein will recount his story of survival, and his ultimately joyful embrace of life in America. Julius is an articulate speaker whose recall of detail is crystal-clear. His compelling testimony is important for all to hear firsthand.
Discussion of Jewish Genome with Dr. Harry Ostrer Author of “Legacy” A discussion of Jewish genetic history will be the topic for an evening with author and Albert Einstein School of Medicine professor Dr. Harry Ostrer at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 14. In his recent book, Legacy, Dr. Ostrer blends history, science and biography to offer readers a fresh perspective on the Jewish people around the world, and their history. He will explore the quintessential question of who Jews are: a race, a people, a religious group. Ostrer also will discuss a related project that he devised, the “Jewish Hap Map Project,” which focuses on creating a database of Jewish genomes. Dr. Ostrer’s book presents a cutting-edge portrait of population genetics, a field that may soon take its place as a pillar of group identity.

Shabbat Torah Study/Morning Minyan Why I Go To Torah Study/Morning Minyan My name is Caryn Hirshleifer and I am in my late 50's. I am an attorney (and have practiced law in the past) but currently work full-time in my family business. With my business open seven days a week, I had long thought that attending Saturday Morning Torah Study/Minyan was not a possibility for me, although I had always been curious about it. When personal matters led me to seek out a greater sense of spirituality several years ago, I decided to rework my schedule, and to give Minyan a try. I was looking for a quiet place where I could relax, think and come away feeling refreshed. Services in the synagogue were, for me, too busy to permit me that quiet space, so I decided to try Minyan. I was a bit nervous when getting started as I was unsure of the prayers and didn't know most of the people in attendance. I was immediately made to feel at home by the warm welcoming Minyan-goers -- most of whom were older than me. They were genuinely pleased to have a newcomer in their midst, and generously shared stories of their lives, their hardships and their dreams. I couldn't help but be drawn in by their openness and honesty, and had the sense that I was part of something profound and even sacred. While each person had his or her stated reason for being there -- whether to observe a yahrzeit, be part of a community, connect with the past, study Torah, or simply to have a place to go on Saturday morning -- it was clear that everyone was there to try to heal. At first, I found the prayers and chanting to be tedious and couldn't wait to come to the Torah study portion of the service. The more often I attended, though, the more I came to see how those prayers literally transported me from the hectic pace of a busy work week to a quieter more tranquil space; in fact, it was that transition that left me feeling spiritually connected, and has compelled me to return as often as I can. Each month, a member of our congregation will share “Why they attend our Shabbat Torah Study/Morning Minyan.” We gather each Saturday morning in the library from 9:00–10:30 am for a short service and a longer discussion on the weekly Torah portion with commentary. No prior experience of Torah study or Hebrew is required. Jeans and informal attire expected! All are welcome.

From the President’s Desk High Holiday Services I am writing this Scribe article the day after Yom Kippur. You are most likely reading this a couple of weeks later. I felt that this year’s High Holiday services were exceptional. They seamlessly blended the spirituality of the themes of the Days of Awe with the uplifting words of Rabbi White and Rabbi Gordon, which were integrated with both the music of Cantor Schwartz, of the choir, of the piano, of the cello, of the violin, of Cantor Elena Schwartz, and of the children and other soloists who shared the Bimah. The services represented some of the best of what Temple Sinai is: caring, capable, intelligent, and spiritual. I wish you all a peaceful, healthful, and wonderful year. We have had a great start. The Golem One of the most famous and enduring of all Jewish legends is that of the Golem, the artificial man. The story goes that in Prague during the 16th century Rabbi Judah Loew (also known as the Maharal) created a human-like creature out of mud to help defend the Jews from their enemies. The Golem was a “super creature,” more powerful than all and able to protect the Jews from destruction. But with all-encompassing power comes danger. A creature that cannot think or feel in human terms cannot remain true to its creator and so the legend has it that after awhile the Golem started destroying the synagogues it was created to protect. Rabbi Loew realized he had to destroy the Golem so that it would not turn around and destroy him. The story may sound familiar. Mary Shelly used it as a basis for Frankenstein. It has been said that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster used the Golem legend as the model for Superman. In a way the story of Pinocchio follows in this tradition. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay written by Michael Chaban actually starts with the main character getting to the United States from Europe by hiding with the Golem in its coffin. As Chaban writes, “the golem offers the promise of freedom to all those who languish in tyranny’s chains.” Pete Hamill in Snow in August invokes the Golem to help when all else seems to fail, when the protagonist is at his wit’s end. Wouldn’t we all want to have a Golem who would help us in times of trial? Wouldn’t we love to be able to,
through certain secret magical practices, share in the creative power of God? However as we may have learned at this year’s high holidays’ services, it is not an outside being that we need to rely on, it is our own selves, our own families, and our own community who have the abilities to control our destinies.

Now that the High Holy Days are winding down, our Nursery School is ready to go full speed ahead with its exciting curriculum. Beginning this month we will start our ever popular "Munchkin Music" and “Mommy and Me” programs. We will also offer an informal playgroup for parents with children less than 12 months of age. We call this "Baby and Me". Parents will have an opportunity to discuss common (or unique) parenting issues, as well as allowing their children the chance to begin to socialize with peers. The babies will enjoy music, toys, yoga and each other! Our Twoodler class has gotten off to a great start. The children and their grownup friends are happily engaged in activities that allow them a wonderful first experience in school. Miss Elisia and Miss Heather provide a warm, nurturing and exciting environment for learning. Our Toddlers quickly separated and are on their own in the classroom with their terrific teachers Miss Clara, Miss Dorie, Miss Diane, Miss Susan, Miss Judy and Miss Liz. They are all happily engaged in many new adventures. Our Three's settled into the new year like real pros. The classrooms are filled with laughter, learning and love. Malcolm Gladwell October 3,Thursday, 8:00 pm Why are we so often surprised when underdogs win? Do Goliaths make mistakes in spite of their strength—or because of it? Why are the childhoods of people at the top of so many professions marked by deprivation? Gladwell uncovers the hidden rules that shape the balance between the weak and the mighty. Malcolm has been a staff writer with The New Yorker magazine since 1996. He is a bestselling author of four #1 best-selling books, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Make a Big Difference (2000), Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking (2005), Outliers: The Story of Success (2008), and What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures (2009), a collection of his journalism.
Robert Gibbs and Ari Fleischer with Ben Feller Full Court Press: Inside the Bush and Obama White Houses October 23, Wednesday, 8:00 pm Go inside the West Wing with two men who gave voice to America’s last two presidents— Robert Gibbs and Ari Fleischer, the first White House press secretaries for President Obama and President George W. Bush. A lively night of stories and candid reflection about the nation’s leadership, moderated by former chief White House correspondent Ben Feller, who covered both presidents for The Associated Press.
Alan Dershowitz and Jeffrey Toobin November 4, Monday, 8:00 pm You know that Alan Dershowitz, the preeminent defense lawyer in America today, has had an impact on the lives of storied clients like O. J. Simpson, Claus von Bülow, Bill Clinton, Julian Assange, Jeffrey MacDonald, Patty Hearst, Mike Tyson, and many more. But who has affected Dershowitz himself? The attorney and author is now Taking the Stand in a new memoir and on 92Y’s stage. Professor Dershowitz is a Brooklyn native who has been called “the nation’s most peripatetic civil liberties lawyer” and one of its “most distinguished defenders of individual rights,” “the best-known criminal lawyer in the world,” “the top lawyer of last resort,” “America’s most public Jewish defender” and “Israel’s single most visible defender – the Jewish state’s lead attorney in the court of public opinion.” Jeffrey Toobin, author of The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court, and writer for the New Yorker and a CNN analyst, interviews Dershowitz.
Governor Jeb Bush November 18, Monday, 8:00 pm Regardless of where you or your parents are from, you probably have strong feelings about immigration. It’s a divisive issue which needs careful analysis. As the former governor of Florida and the author of Immigration Wars: Forging an American Solution, Jeb Bush has given careful thought to crafting a practical, bipartisan approach to immigration policy. Hear for yourself what he proposes and listen to a member of one of America’s leading political families and a potential Presidential candidate in 2016. Jeb Bush is the 43rd governor of the state of Florida, serving from 1999 through 2007 (Continued on page 21)

Piers Morgan December 11, Wednesday, 8:00 pm Piers Morgan is a British journalist and the current host of Piers Morgan Live on CNN, which he began hosting in January 2011. The show replaced Larry King Live in the 9:00 pm timeslot following King's retirement. He is a former judge on America's Got Talent and a former winner of The Celebrity Apprentice. In the United Kingdom he worked as a writer and editor for several British tabloids, including The Sun, News of the World, and Daily Mirror, and was a judge on Britain's Got Talent. In November 2012, Morgan was criticized in the official findings of the Lord Leveson Inquiry which found that Morgan's testimony about phone hacking "clearly prove is that he was aware that it was taking place in the press as a whole and that he was sufficiently unembarrassed by what was criminal behavior that he was prepared to joke about it". Morgan has written eight books, including three volumes of memoirs.
Ari Shavit with David Remnick: The Tragedy and Triumph of Israel January 8, Wednesday, 8:00 pm Haaretz senior correspondent Ari Shavit joins New Yorker editor David Remnick for an incisive analysis of the Jewish state’s fraught history— and its prospects for the future. Shavit’s new book, My Promised Land: TheTriumph and Tragedy of Israel, is the sweeping result of his 30 years in the trenches of Israeli society and politics. David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker since July, 1998, is the author of several books, including King of the World, Resurrection, and Lenin’s Tomb.

ARZA News by Donna Levine ARZA (Association of Reform Zionist of America) has a new President: Joshua Weinberg has been unanimously approved by the ARZA Board to serve as the next president of the organization. Joshua Weinberg is a product of the Reform Jewish movement and currently serves as the Director of the Israel Program for the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. He made aliyah to Israel ten years ago and will receive rabbinic ordination from HUC-JIR when he completes the Israel Rabbinic Program in November 2013. Weinberg will officially begin his duties with ARZA on September 1. Together with his wife Mara, their daughter Noa, and a new baby daughter, born May 30th (one of Israel’s and the Jewish People’s newest citizens,) the Weinberg family will be moving to the New York area, where Josh will begin his Shlichut on ARZA’s behalf. ARZA, The Reform Israel Fund, is the Israeli voice of the Reform Movement in the USA, and seeks to make Israel fundamental to the sacred lives and Jewish identities of Reform Jews. An important happening for liberal Jews living in Israel: Israel says it will move ahead with the funding of non-Orthodox Rabbis. This will be a landmark achievement for Reform and Conservative leaders
who have long chafed at their second-class treatment by the Israeli government. Please remember to stay in touch with your congressional representatives to let them know how important it is for them to continue to support Israel: Senator Kirsten E.
