Leave the driving to the Transit trolley on Fridays sign: a bell that rings like in the old days of big city rail trolleys. Music played over the trolley’s public address system also will add to the festive experience that Bleam and his staff intend to create for riders. The free rides will again be offered, compliments of Barry County Transit and several local sponsors.

Barry County Transit will again offer free trolley ride service through the city of Hastings on Fridays from 6 to 10 p.m. through Aug. 17. In addition, the trolley will spend Saturday nights in the Gun Lake area during the same hours, following a route beginning at the state park, wrapping around to Patterson to Marsh Road. A new stop has been added this year: Yankee Springs Golf Course. “They’ve both been popular runs,” says Barry County Transit Manager and Transportation Coordinator Joe Bleam. “There’s even the possibility of combining the two on Saturday nights for a dinner run from the state park into Hastings. We’ve done that before, and people very much like looking at the menus on the way in and then deciding where they’d like to be dropped off to dine.” In Hastings, this season’s route will be very similar to last year’s, making 14 stops within the city limits, including business districts, parks, schools and residential neighborhoods over an approximate 45-minute circuit. The trolley will have its signature arrival and departure

The Hastings/Barry County Airport hosts a dawn patrol fly-in celebration of flight with nearly 100 classic planes and experimental aircraft each year in July. Classic cars and motorcycles also will be available for viewing. This year’s dawn patrol is Saturday, July 14, from 8 a.m. to noon. A pancake breakfast will served. The cost is $6, children under 12 years old, $3. Airplane rides will be available. All proceeds go to aviation scholarships and improvements to the airport. The airport is located west of Hastings on Airport Road, between M-37 and West State Road.

Middleville blends festivals, concerts and races for summer fun Thornapple Trail start at 9 a.m. • Sept. 8 — Heritage Day begins with 10K run on the Paul Henry Thornapple Trail. Other events include parade, antique car and motorcycle show, crafts, games, food, tractor pulls, and other entertainment throughout the day. • Oct. 13 — Chili cook-off sponsored by Lions Club. • Dec. 1 — Lions Club sponsors Middleville Christmas Parade at 10 a.m. • Dec. 20 — Holly Trolley Christmas evening in Middleville.

The village of Middleville will host several community events throughout the year, from the traditional parades and music series, to the Labor Day bridge walk and annual fall Heritage Days. Events are all family oriented with the goal of getting people in and around the community to gather, share and have fun. Following is a listing of some of the main events planned for 2012: • June 2 — Champs Bar and Grill spring bike run will give participants a chance to dust off their motorcycles and enjoy a ride through the area. • June 15 — Riverbank music series opens with music planned every Friday through Aug. 24. The music is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Stagecoach Park, 100 E. Main St. Each week, a different group will present a free concert on the riverbank. Guests are invited to bring their own chairs or blankets and sit on the lawn to listen and enjoy. Local restaurants will have picnic suppers available. • June 15, 16 and 17 — 24-Hour Challenge. The community hosts this international event challenging bicyclists to ride as many miles as they can in a 24-hour period. The contest starts at Thornapple Kellogg Middle School. The Rotary Club sponsors a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. at the middle school to start the event. • July 10 to 12 — Blue Lake Group performance. This year’s entertainment will be the Pamina Girls’ Choir from Landau, Germany. They will perform a concert July 11 or 12. • July 28 — Taste of Middleville. The Lions Club will sponsor this food sampling event from 5 to 7 p.m. • Aug. 6 to 11 — Thornapple River Expedition. This is a six-day, 68-mile journey of discovery to experience conditions and opportunities of Michigan’s Thornapple River, from Vermontville to Ada. Aug. 8, the groups will stay at Whispering Waters Campground near Irving and Aug. 9 will have lunch at Middleville’s Stagecoach Park. • Sept. 3 — Labor Day bridge walk/Volksmarch. Eight bridge crossings and a 5K or 10K walk on the Paul Henry

Barry County Fair is a July tradition For 160 years, the Barry County Fair has been a summertime tradition, and it continues this year July 14 to 21. The fair is held at the county fairgrounds and Barry Expo Center on M-37 between Hastings and Middleville. Fair week is full of 4-H livestock shows, carnival rides, fair food, entertainment and family fun. It’s the culminating week for many 4-H youths in the county who have worked throughout the year on projects from crafts and photography, to creative writing, baking, gardening, electronics, livestock projects and educational books and posters. Some of this year’s grandstand main attractions include harness racing, draft horse pulls, off-road challenge, rodeo, autocross, motocross, antique tractor pull, pony pull and a demolition derby. Many of the grandstand events are free, while others have an additional entrance fee. There’s lots of free entertainment the community tent every day including Senior Day activities Tuesday, Ladies Day programs Thursday and a country music jamboree Friday. The annual Taste of Barry County takes place Saturday, July 21. Daily youth livestock competitions start July 14 with the dog show. Sunday, more competitions heat up the start of the fair with the rabbit and cavy show and the poultry show. Monday’s main livestock attractions are the goat and lambs shows, followed Tuesday by the swine show. Wednesday, the beef show takes over the main ring and others will participate in the cat show and dog agility classes. Thursday

The Barry County Fair has been providing fun and education for area residents for 160 years. marks the youth dairy show and dairy feeder show. Followed by the small animal sale. Friday is the large animal livestock sale and Saturday marks the end of the fair with the show of champions and a youth tractor driving contest and livestock fashion show. Horse shows and contests take place throughout the week in the horse arena. The fair’s version of the “Amazing Race” is back for a second year on Saturday where teams of 4-Hers compete to find clues, complete challenges and finish the race. CROP Walks continue to grow The annual CROP Hunger Walks held each fall in Barry County continue to grow, and organizers of the events in Hastings and Delton are eagerly planning for another demonstration of neighbors caring for each other. The Barry County CROP Hunger Walk traditionally takes place in Hastings and will be Sunday, Oct. 14, with registration at 1:30 and the walk at 2 p.m. This year’s plans include the possibility of moving the event to Middleville to broaden participation, explore new walking routes and tap into the enthusiasm and creativity brought to the event each year by members of the Middleville United Methodist Church. Participant numbers were also up at the Delton Area Community CROP Hunger Walk last fall, helped primarily by children who responded to a $25 gift match from an anonymous donor. “When we advertised that, we found so many people who will support kids in any way they can,” says Dee DeFields, who co-coordinates the event with Elaine Gilbert. “But we’ve also got a few who are original members of our event.” DeFields also points out that one participant takes the name of the event seriously. Delton’s Marianne Struckmeyer traditionally grows and sells produce to make a donation to the event, raising crops for CROP. The Delton Area Community CROP Hunger Walk is traditionally the last Sunday of September and begins and ends at Faith United Methodist Church.

Hastings will be ‘Mackertown’ June 30-July 1 organizing the weekend. “The members of the community organizing this new event in Barry County are creating an event that is sure to succeed in providing a healthy and fun tournament.” Team registration, priced at $132 per team, is open until June 8 by mail and through June 11 online. Applications are available online at www.macker.com/tournaments. Player lists and brackets will be available on the website one week prior to the tournament. “The Gus Macker Basketball Tournament is a great time for anybody who enjoys basketball regardless of their playing experience or skill level,” says Pat Coltson, teacher and coach with the Hastings Area Schools. “It’s a great weekend spent hanging out with friends playing basketball and meeting new people.”

In its 38th year, the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament will be making its first stop in Hastings the weekend of June 30 and July 1. The three-on-three tournament that started in a Lowell driveway in 1987 and which now holds events all over the country, is expected to bring 200-plus teams and more than 8,000 players and spectators to downtown Hastings. Courts will be set up in the streets adjacent to the downtown business district and historic courthouse for teams of any composition: male or female, young or old, short or tall, experienced or novice. “This event will be a clear reflections on the amazing residents and community members that are giving of their resources, time, and talents,” says Valerie Byrnes of the Barry County Chamber of Commerce, which is

The smell of fresh, homemade chilli will be engulfing downtown Ionia once again, as the Autumn Celebration comes into town. The Sunfield Farmers Picnic Aug. 16 to 19 brings a crowd to the village on M-43 east of Lake Odessa. Thursday events include a pig roast, Sunfield Area Sponsors of Programs for Youth ball games and reception for the grand marshal. Friday’s schedule includes a chicken barbecue, craft and vendor booths, games, SPY’s ball games, pedal pull and dance under the tent. Saturday will feature a pancake breakfast, SPY’s ball games, whiffleball, open class craft display with judging, GAR hall open, craft and vendor booths, parade, open horseshoe contest, firemen’s bingo, frog-jumping contest, family games, Lions ox roast, Rainbow of Talent Variety Show, merchants’ raffle and fireworks. Sunday will simmer down the festival with a community church service and Sunfield all-school reunion.

Yankee Springs offers mix of outdoor fun Yankee Springs Recreation Area consists of 5,000 acres, nine lakes, two state parks, an equestrian campground, 30 miles of trails including a portion of the North Country Trail which stretches from New York to South Dakota. The area also is home to a variety of natural geological features, such as the Devil’s Soup Bowl, a very steep depression in the earth caused by glaciers. Grave’s Hill and Mount Baldy are also popular scenic spots. The recreation area contains numerous stands of red, white and jack pines. “The Pines,” where the Civilian Conservation Corps hand planted saplings more than 70 years ago, is open to visitors who are invited to walk the trail that cuts through the mature stand of pines. The recreation area has been designated an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. A number of birds can nest and reproduce only where mature trees are present. Two rustic cabins are available for rent on Chief Noonday Lake. The cabins have a hand water pump, but no running water. Both cabins have electricity with a refrigerator and microwave. The area features a bicycle-only campground with access to 13 miles of mountain bike trails. A permanent orienteering course allows adventurers to hone their compass skills year-round. The course is the only one of its kind within Michigan State Parks.

Nashville Valley Rally adds more to car show weekend LOWELL

The 12th annual classic car show in Nashville has expanded to include Valley Rally. Traditionally held the Saturday before Fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day, the event has grown to three days and several events. Blue Water Rockers, a retro rock band, will start the festivities with a free concert on the lawn of Putnam District Library Thursday, June 14. Friday evening, karaoke and hot dogs provided by Grace Community church will culminate with a fireworks display at dusk. Saturday will be brimming with activities as Main Street fills with classic cars. Each year, car enthusiasts enjoy pancake breakfast at the fire station, a parade, prizes, 50/50 raffle, village-wide yard sales, bake sales, silent auction and softball tournament. A 5K has been added to this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s events. The library will again offer Art on the Lawn; featuring furniture from Lentz Table Factory and paintings by Lelia Lentz. Kids may join in art activities sponsored by Thornapple Arts Council. A book sale and root beer floats will also be at the library.

Kent County Fair will celebrate “Bounty” The Kent County Youth Fair will celebrate “The Bounty of Kent County” from Aug. 6 through 11. With the amount of effort that goes into maintaining an event like the fair the 4-H volunteers and participants work year round to ready the fairgrounds and animals, schedule events and organize. From the opening ceremonies on Sunday, followed by a busy Heroes' Day on Monday, people flock to the fairgrounds in search of entertainment and good hometown fun. Out on the midway and in the little park next to the vendors' stands, will be the smell of elephant ears, gyros and French fries. There will be carnival rides and sideshows and make sure you visit the Free Entertainment stage for everything from fashion shows to clown skits. And of course, the animal barns will be filled with livestock groomed for the fair. 4-H kids will be showing their animal hoping to win that blue ribbon. Located nine miles south of Hastings, Pierce Cedar Creek Institute is a public environmental education center. The mission of the institute is to promote environmental education, research, preservation and appreciation. Set on 661 acres, Pierce Cedar Creek Institute provides visitors with a exposure to a blend of diverse habitats, including wetlands, forests, marshes, streams, lakes and prairies. The institute is open to the public, year-round, free of charge. Enjoy music, fun during Rock the Port concert series held at Lake Odessa Village Park

Rock the Port is a free concert series for the public, located at Lake Odessa Village Park, and is scheduled to be held at 7 p.m. every Thursday starting June 30 through Aug. 11. Members of the Ionia County Area Arts Council have had a goal to revive the series after its one-year hiatus. This summer, bands including Stolen Horses, The Professors, Maiden Voyage, Paradise Band and Nowhere Band are expected to perform, as well as singular artists Matt Moore and Josh Rose. Arts and Eats weekend celebrates art, food and farms

Arts and Eats is a free backroads arts, food and farm tour. The weekend self-driving tour during the height of color season in Southwest Michigan is scheduled for Oct. 20 and 21, featuring stops in and around Barry County. The program will focus on the assets and features of the area. A map will direct travelers to artists in their studios, eateries that feature local food, and farms that grow local food or fiber. Praireville concert season hits high note â&#x20AC;&#x153;but our age ofpeople is declining and getting older, so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got to change a bit.â&#x20AC;? Neighbors and long-time fans will be surprised â&#x20AC;&#x201D; in a good way â&#x20AC;&#x201D; by how Bill Aukerman defines â&#x20AC;&#x153;a bit,â&#x20AC;? especially based on the opening concert that kicked off this 34th season. Billed as a fundraiser to replace the roof of the Farmers Hall of Fame building on the property at Milo and Parker roads just south of Prairieville, the April 27 appearance by Elvis Presley Jr. and saxophonist Tommy Vale blew the shingles off the structure. Vale will be returning Friday, June 8, in an appearance by Bill Haley and the Comets which will also include trombonist Al Rappa, who played with the late Bill Haley. Also on this seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dance card will be a Friday, June 22, concert by The Leiters of the Star Lite Theatre in Branson, Mo., followed by a July 27 Country Caravan Show featuring impersonators Rock Harley as Johnny Cash, Alvin Anders as Hank Williams Sr., and Kathleen Bressler as Patsy Cline. Friday, Aug. 5, the Aukermans will be dedicating the Old Gospel Church with a 10 a.m. concert of gospel music, an 11:15 a.m. church service, and a noon potluck dinner. Friday, Aug. 31, will kick off the Labor Day holiday weekend with the annual Hall of Fame induction of country music entertainers along with a concert beginning at 7 p.m. The weekend concludes on Saturday, Sept. 1 with the signature Hall of Fame Country Music Show including a benefit auction at 2 p.m., a potluck dinner and a 7 p.m. concert. The season will wrap up Friday, Sept. 28, with a Rat Pack Show starring Steve London as Dean Martin and Garry Sacco as Frank Sinatra. Proceeds from all shows will be dedicated to sustaining the Hall of Fame and the Old Gospel Church. Founders festival lights up Delton Aug. 10-11

Food and fun will again highlight Founders Day in Delton to be held for the 39th year Friday and Saturday, Aug.10 and 11. Activities for the entire family include inflatables for kids Friday afternoon and Saturday on the soccer field across from the elementary school. The popular Founders Festival Committee’s Pig Roast will be Friday evening, featuring a menu of pork, baked beans, potato salad, roll and drink. Cost is $6 per person and $4 for kids under 12. Friday evening will also include outdoor bowling on the north end of Scribner Street. The street will be closed off, and anyone can bowl.

Saturday starts with the Barry Prairieville Hope Fire Club Pancake Breakfast served from 7 to 11 a.m. There will be arts and crafts on the school grounds, and the inflatables will be open, as well. Saturday will also include the amateur rib cookoff. Contestants pay a $25 registration fee which includes four slabs of ribs to cook. Contestants must bring their own equipment, and the cooking is done on site. The contest begins at 9 a.m. and judging is at 2:30 p.m. A ceremony will be held Saturday at noon to honor the grand marshals, Miss Delton and her court, as well as Little Miss Delton and her court, after which the parade will start at 1 p.m. There will be entertainment throughout the two-day event, as well as games, raffles, food and fun for all.

Birds flock to Bernard Historical Otis Sanctuary Museum to

The Michigan Audubon Otis Farm Bird Sanctuary is a sanctuary with three distinct natural features. Its 120 acres can be described as either wetland, grassland or forest. The wetland nudges up against the sanctuary’s western border — Glass Creek. Visitors may follow a 500-foot boardwalk out to the creek. Bird life in the marsh include soras, Virginia rails and trumpeter swans, along with a cadre of other waterfowl and songbirds. Guests may bring a kayak or canoe to better experience Glass Creek by paddling upstream through the marsh and back by letting the stream be a gentle guide. A 30-acre restored prairie and a 10-acre field attracts grassland songbirds. The prairie recently was enhanced by removing non-native shrubs and trees. The grassland runs down to Havens Road. Massive red and black oak trees along the road represent what this area looked like 200 years ago. The 1.2-mile hiking trail weaves through these open areas. In late August, eight-foot tall big bluestem drapes over the trail. Birds here include the state endangered Henslow’s sparrow, sedge wren, field sparrow, and bobwhite quail. Birdhouses in these areas attract tree swallows and Eastern bluebirds. The west part of the sanctuary is a mix of pine plantation, a savanna restoration, and a mature oak-hickory forest. Several ponds intermix, giving birdwatchers a variety of species in this area, such as the ovenbird, hooded warbler, Acadian flycatcher, American goldfinches and blue-winged warblers. On the ponds, watch for wood ducks. The sanctuary is open every day, dawn to dusk. Admission is free. Ample parking is available, and there is a bathroom. The Otis Farm Interpretive Center is the red barn and is open on selected days. Every third Saturday of the month, join the manager or a volunteer on a bird hike starting at 10 a.m. from the barn. celebrate 50 years An ice cream social commemorating the 50th anniversary of Bernard Historical Museum will take place Saturday, July 7, from 1 to 5 p.m. Guests are invited to attend the celebration and enjoy free ice cream. The museum is located at 7135 W. Delton Road approximately one mile west of Delton. The grounds overlook Crooked Lake and include seven buildings, housing more than 25,000 artifacts. The main building was built in the 1930s and was operated by Dr. Prosper G. Bernard as a hospital. He later converted the building to a museum that opened to the public in May 1963. Admission and parking are free. Donations are accepted. Hours in June are Sundays only, 1 to 5 p.m.; July and August, Saturdays and Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m.; September, Sundays only, 1 to 5 p.m. The museum is closed October to May. Tour groups may schedule visits on other days by calling 269-623-5416.

Old Fashioned Revival in Delton The second annual Rejuvenation Celebration —An Old Fashioned Revival featuring Southern gospel music with local singers and evangelist Don McCloud will return to Barry County at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, and Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame building, 7990 Milo Road, Delton. Orangeville Days bring mix of activities The community of Orangeville will hold its seventh annual Orangeville Days festivities from Friday, Aug. 17, through Sunday, Aug. 19. But the festivities begin with the Taste of Orangeville Aug. 12 to 16; people who buy a wristband at one of the six participating restaurants will get special prices on food at the restaurants. The annual euchre tournament is tentatively set to kick things off Friday evening. Saturday promises to be a big day starting with a pancake breakfast at the township hall at 7350 Lindsey Road, then a parade. Most of the activities will take place on the grounds of the township hall and the accompanying sports fields. Activities will include horseshoe, basketball and softball tournaments. Laura the Elephant from Fremont will be present and will be available for rides, providing children and others with the opportunity to view the surroundings from the height of her back. A variety of games also will be available for children. A midway featuring 40 different vendors will have everything from food to T-shirts. A band will begin to play at 2 p.m. In the evening the Gun River Inn will feature a mechanical surfboard. Sunday, things wrap up with the last two softball teams

still standing playing for the tournament championship. Orangeville Baptist Church will host a picnic and barbecue.

Laura the elephant is scheduled to return to Orangeville in August.

Thornapple Players offer entertainment, drama camp and dinner theater During the summer of 2012, the Thornapple Players will present a weekend of one-act plays, a two-week drama camp for children ages 8 through 14, and two nights of dinner theater. The Players will start things off the summer with three one-act plays “The Still Alarm,” “The Twelve-Pound Look,” and “The Ugly Duckling,” at 7 p.m. June 7, 8 and 9 in the Barry Enrichment Community Center, located at 231 S. Broadway, Hastings.

Next, the group will offer a two-week summer drama camp for students ages 8 to 14. The camp will run Monday through Friday, June 11 to 15 and June 18 to 22. A performance of a one-act musical, which is free and open to the public will be at 2 and 7 p.m. Friday, June 22, at the Barry Community Enrichment Center.
